Yes, of course it was edited.. hehe.. I just wanted to show that if they could only limit the putting up of billboards in the city, the place would look much less stressful.

I haven't got much choice but to take pictures at dusk, the rest of the day I'm in class.. hehe... But really, the lighting at these times can be really great.

I was hesitant to post this picture taken inside Southville because the people there might not appreciate it (privacy stuff..) but here goes:

Took it from the St. Pauls Hospital... top floor I think.

Sorry for erasing those buildings.. but that's no full moon.. hehe.. just a dust particle that reflected the flash :) .

Here's a picture I took of Chateaux Geneva last year. More houses have been built since then.
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/IAMME00/100_4573.jpg

I heard Sen. Manny Villar has already purchased this house and lot. I suppose he's out to resell it now. The house was repainted entirely before it was put on sale, so I don't think they plan to destroy it. :)

Here's another worthwhile picture I found in my files. This was taken about three years ago, but I think the place still looks pretty much the same.

can be an extension of balut and penoy market, too. Wish to visit the area, one day.
lol. Probably that's the best part of Fort San Pedro. Tawhay lang dira during summer days. Don't know kung may nagalangoy pa da gihapon sa Fort. It used to be a swimming haven sang mga early '80's. Dumduman ko pa na nga damo dira naga-picnic. Lately, daw wala na mabati-a ang Fort. Hopefully, mangin matinlo naman dira nga area no?

Former Iloilo solon Garin named PCA administrator
By MELODY M. AGUIBA

Malacañang has appointed former Iloilo Rep. Oscar Garin as administrator of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), replacing Jesus Emmanuel Paras who assumes an undersecretary position at the Department of Agriculture (DA).

Garin, who was a three-termer as Iloilo representative, said in a statement that PCA intends to accelerate planting and replanting of coconut which is part of government’s goal of expanding agricultural land by additional two million hectares up to 2010.

"Our production should meet demand, and this brings us to the basic, we need to plant more coconuts," he said.

Garin, himself a producer of virgin coconut oil, said that brisk demand for both traditional and innovative coconut products— coconut bio-diesel, geo-textiles, and virgin coconut oil – is prompting an increase in coconut production.

The Philippines produces some 2.5 million metric tons (MT) coconut products, in copra terms, yearly. This brings about 0 to 0 million in foreign exchange earnings which makes coconut the single biggest agricultural export crop of the country.

Garin conceived the "Garin Farm," an integrated agri-livelihood demonstration and leisure park which is a one-stop shop for farmers, agricultural tourists, enthusiasts, investors, researchers and students. Propagation and breeding of almost all agricultural plants and animals are demonstrated in this farm. A processing plant for producing fruits, dairy, and meat are also in the farm.

There's one picture in previous thread. Are you talking about Gaisano Iloilo (the old one in Guanco) or the Gaisano City Iloilo in LaPaz? Hope you can visit us in Iloilo again. All restos you've mentioned above are still existing (as far as I know) and are well-patronized, too. Cheers !

I am referring to Gaisano City in LaPaz. I am really planning to go there this coming August. Any recommendation on the hotel. During that time, I stayed at Amigo Terraces and Sarabia Hotel. BTW, is Camp Jefferson (beerhouse) still there? :tongue4: :tongue4: :tongue4:

Distura's 3M trading center project inaugurated
By Ruby P. Silubrico

DUMANGAS Mayor Rolando Distura's P3-million trading center in Barangay Balabag was inaugurated last Friday and no less than Senator Edgardo Angara graced this.

The project consisted of an ice plant that can produce 10 metric tons of ice, a first class slaughterhouse, and a bagsakan or fish-trading center for the province. The fish center would also include processing if fish for export.

"I have been dreaming that Dumangas would be the Economic Trading Center of Iloilo. This could help our post harvest program and our valued products like bangus (milkfish). The center would facilitate the expanded deboning of bangus," Distura said.

"This would be a source of livelihood for the people of Dumangas and the rest of the province. This will support to the country's program, the modernization of agricultural fisheries and we appeal investors to invest in our town," he added.

This program was done through the support of the local government of Dumangas, former senator Ramon Magsaysay, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Bfar), Department of Agriculture (DA) and late Congressman Narciso Monfort of the 4th District of Iloilo.

Paseo Iloilo spells fun
for historic Visayan City

By Lynda C. Corpuz

Development is definitely blowing south. In line with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s efforts to decentralize government from the capital, several business investors have diligently followed suit. In Iloilo, Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC) is proudly leading the pack with the grand opening of Paseo Iloilo.

Paseo Iloilo is a hub that seeks to bring together the scattered bars, cafés, restaurants and leisure spots in the original Queen City of the South. Located in the city’s central business district, it is made for Iloilo’s young professionals—bankers, doctors and medical representatives—who need a place to unwind after a hectic day.

“The area is where Ilonggos can find affordable food, entertainment and nightlife destinations,” informs Ditas Taleon, who manages Robinsons Place Iloilo mall in Paseo. She adds that in gathering the mall tenants, RLC was very careful in its selection so as not to “duplicate” the other destinations within the complex. “We want to give the Ilonggos variety.”

And true enough, Paseo Iloilo in De Leon Street boasts of establishments ranging from trendy bars to mineral water stations.

Apart from offering leisure activities, however, Taleon discloses that RLC will soon work closely with different local government agencies to promote tourism. Iloilo, of course is a historic city with endless centuries old structures. RLC is aware that what it needs are modern-day amenities to bring in more visitors from around the country and the world.

“RLC plans to have something similar to Nayong Pilipino in Paseo Iloilo to highlight the historical details and features of the province,” adds Taleon.

But for the moment, the corporation is busy spreading the word around that Paseo Iloilo is filled with interesting places to check out. And for the tourist, the list below is The Life & Times’ suggested itinerary for a fun and budget-friendly night at the town.

Mang Inasal is probably the fastest growing establishment in Paseo Iloilo. From its open-air space to the present air-conditioned unit beside Robinsons Supermarket, the grilled barbecue chicken and other Pinoy specialties house is a hit for both Ilonggos and tourists. Owned by Edgar Sia II, the restaurant is packed daily with customers who crave for chicken pecho or paa paired with garlic rice and buko juice, and of course, halo-halo for dessert!

Original Biscocho Haus spells “pasalubong.” Owned by the Guadarramas of Jaro, the company was born in 1975 and since then, has never stopped baking its famous biscocho. Later, Guadarramas developed other specialties in its aim to be the ultimate pasalubong center of Iloilo.

Ted’s La Paz Batchoy is where you can partake of the famous batchoy of Iloilo. Have it with puto or pan de sal.

HA! HA! HA! Comedy Bar is owned by July Galang and Raha Sabordo. It is the first comedy house, bar, restaurant and disco in one in Western Visayas. Manila-based comedians perform at the venue Friday and Saturday nights.

Reasons Bar and Resto is a music lounge and sing-along bar that is fast becoming a haven for Ilonggo music enthusiasts. It has the widest selection of songs from standards, to OPM, and pop, folk, rock and jazz. It is open from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily.

Apart the endless list of food and entertainment places, Paseo Iloilo also has Rooks Sports Bar for billiard guys and gals; Go Fish for the hobbyists; and Netopia Internet Cafe for the techie.

“This is still a work in progress,” says Taleon, thrilled at the turn out of visitors at the launch. “And we promise Ilonggos more fun in the very near future.”

Took this photo yesterday afternoon on my way to the airport. I was in the city since Friday only but I had a very tight schedule and was too busy to roam around. Never even had a chance to check the night market out which opened last Friday. But I saw on the 6pm news yesterday while waiting at the pre-departure area that some of the vendors already abandoned their stalls there and went back to their original "puwestos". They are complaining that they are not getting that much customers in muelle loney.

city f signs? it doesnt quite sound right on my ear. but i just hope they stop doing this on every bare wall and overpass in the city, and i dont think this is something to be proud of, it doesnt look good and frankly speaking, it looks ugly and dirty. its making downtown more dirtier. and about the image above ^^ looks like the gate is about to fold anytime. nice architecture though, reminds me of the metropolitan theater, art deco?

if the whole length of the iloilo river would look like that it would be great even if there are buldings/establishment.
only a few cities can have "mangroves" within itself.
fewer cities have "salty" rivers :D

Yes! Dumangas is really doing well, aside from their "warehouse" that could store a million cavans of rice they also have a Pier thats is used as a RO-RO port...an anti-disaster program that is the best in th country... I think Dumangas has along way to go... I'm not be surprised if 5-7 years from now they will become a City. The last time I was there was 3 years ago but for a town they already have lots of Big Commercial Buildings like Jaro in the mid-80's...

Ari latest na huring huring sa ILOILO:

CREMATORIUM IN JARO

MANY are against the establishment of a crematorium on Commission Civil Street, Brgy. Lady of Fatima, Jaro, Iloilo City.
The furnace for cremating dead persons, the first one in Iloilo or maybe in the entire Western Visayas, is a welcome development if it is stationed in a proper place that is far from crowded areas.

We hope that Mayor Jerry would take a second look at this matter so as to obviate problems on environmental issues and concerns.

Will you guys behave? Valium was just wondering why all the sudden about the gated villages, which is admittedly, a bit new in Iloilo. First one started only in the late nineties - That was Puerto Real de Iloilo. So I don't see a problem with the question. Also, why do most Ilonggos resort to making personal attacks when cornered? Why not just answer or throw back the question? It is very embarrassing to see - rather hear fellow Ilonggos make personal attacks and even to the point of name calling. It is a very immature behaviour.

Please, let's not get into these arguments again. It's definitely not going to help in any way, thus, it's not worth it. Stop it please.

Just to change the topic, here's a shot I took on the new Jalandoni bridge. notice that they've started to build the road going towards Benigno Aquino Avenue. Then they'll need to build the bridge across dungon creek. I hope they'll finish this project quick because it's a much needed improvement that can greatly improve the traffic situation in the area.
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/IAMME00/iloiloriverpan3.jpg

I noticed that there's plenty of space between this road being built and the edge of the river which is lined with mangroves. I suggest that they do some filling in this area and develop it into a park. We haven't got so many parks in the city, and this spot is simply perfect for one!

It wouldn't cost the city government so much. Just put some earth over this old fishpond, plant some carabao grass, lay out some nice bricks, add some lights, build a few kiosks, lease them out, and use the revenue to maintain the place. You could liken it to Manila's baywalk. Just visualize it and perhaps you'd get as excited as I am. :)

They are complaining that they are not getting that much customers in muelle loney.
love the architecture of Jaro Police Station. Kinahanglan lang gid niya sang new paintings, refurbishments, etc and okay na. Indeed, Jaro is getting more and more commercialized these days. Cheers ! :)

The entrance gate rotunda at Providence Iloilo
By TEDDY BOY MAGALONA

As the saying goes, ‘change is inevitable in every phase of life,’ it is also true to all activities and endeavors done by men.

Providence Iloilo is an epitome of how change happens in the field of real estate development. It is a middle class mass housing community coming located at Brgy.Balabag, Pavia, Iloilo. It is just fitting for Providence Iloilo to be called as the Philippine’s finest middle class mass housing project.

Providence offers only the best for its clients making use of exceptional ideas from the best in the industry.

To start with, the entrance structure and landscaping is designed by Arch. Ildefonso P. Santos, the first East Asian that became a member of the American Landscape Architect Society and is responsible in introducing the said profession in the Philippines sometime more than 30 years ago.

Architect Santos is considered not only the pioneer in landscape architecture in the Philippines but is more considered as the ‘Father of Philippine Landscape Architecture.’

It is an ovum shaped work of art with a distinct and vibrant character through the interplay of design, colors and lightings.

It is equipped with a dancing fountain, the first in the Island of Panay, where it has mechanized water actions and synchronized lightings and music.

It has six daytime fountains that tickles the senses when behold and night and day distinct looks and character. Providence also boasts of a reflecting pool with 70 + sculptured brass birds as if flying akin to the movement of ballet dance.

There are massive ‘ara-al’ boulders inside the pool giving the entrance rotunda an elevation perspective.
The grounds surrounding the entrance pool is a ‘combo’ of tiles, stones, and greens planned to exude variety and playfulness.

Two deco walls that surround the pool in a rotating-like motion with its color splints of crafted mosaic tiles.
Colored pave stones in diverse circular outlines creating a ‘rippling’ effect.

And why does St. Rafael Development Corporation (SRDC), the owner and developer of Providence Iloilo took extra steps in providing such entrance features to the project?

This is to build a beautiful landmark for the project and provide the homeowners and the public a place to relax and stroll in the midst of ‘cool’ and ‘invigorating’ surroundings for the mind and body to re-charge.

A place where cultural and art performances can be performed to enhance the quality of life and to provide opportunity for the mind and body, including the spirit of a man, to attain greater heights that God has endowed.

After all, St. Rafael Development Corporation (SRDC) is guided in all its projects and developments by its Vision, “Building Communities…Transforming Lives…All for the greater glory of God.”

Epson Photo Imaging Competition opens
By Ramel dela Cruz

A NEW art sensation is bursting here in the province wherein some Ilonggos have already made waves in.

It's the EpiX06 Epson Photo Imaging Competition opening last March 22 at the Robinsons Place Iloilo. It was also there that top artists in the province were given merits for their artistic expertise in last year's competition. They are Fred Orig, James Tremañes, Erna Forster, Carlos Garcia, Alex Carlo Magno and Jomari Maleta.

The opening was organized by PG Zoluaga, another top artist in Iloilo who also exhibited his paintings, drawings and photographs.

The opening included a short film showing on how the art of photography developed in the country.

Zoluaga invited the artists to join this year's competition.

The first category is Vanishing Scenes, which covers photographs of local aesthetic masterpieces or any traditional or historic Filipino architecture like photographs of old houses, building, churches, statutes, vehicles, and other infrastructures.

The second category is Filipino Achiever, which includes photographs of modern-day Filipino heroes in disguise of ordinary, working class citizens. This may include portraits of traffic enforcers, soldiers, construction workers, domestic helpers and athletes, among others.

The mechanics of the contest are the following:

Participants may use digital or film base camera, provided that the photo entry will be printed on an Epson printer and on any brand of photo paper.
The entries submitted should be of the size for the Enthusiast Division A4 or 8.5 inches x 11 inches. For Professional Division, it should be A3 or 11 inches x 17 inches.

For the Enthusiast Division, prizes are: P25,000 for the first prize; P15,000 for the second prize and P10,000 for the third prize. For the Professional Division, prizes are: P50,000 for the first prize; P35,000 for the second prize; and P20,000 for the third prize.

The deadline of submission of entries is on April 30.

Lewdsaint, I was just saying that even if somebody criticises you or your place, you should never, ever attack that man in a personal manner... Dealing low blows on the other person just shows that you are even worse than him. For the improvement of Iloilo and its people... Remember, "Birds of the same feathers, flock together" .. or "tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are" .. such is a powerful words indeed. So do behave yourself cos it shows something. I hope you learn a lot from CPU not to go with what is wrong.

Btw, why an inkling that Valium is eazyboy and a cebuano? Oh my .. please lang po. I don't want people from Cebu coming to our thread because of what you say so.

Well, I don't see anything wrong with his query. Sure it was a bit off putting but I guess he was just curious as to why everybody here is suddenly interested in gated communities. Could have been answered easily with something like - Gated communities only started in the late nineties in Iloilo and a lot more people could now afford to buy homes in these communities because a lot of people are now earning much more by working as nurses and engineers in other parts of the world. - That wasn't so hard, was it? In fact I see no problem with these because only a few cities had gated communities before the mid nineties. So what is the big deal with Val's query?

That's right, Caloy. Why do they loved to compare their cities to ours. he he. Sorry lang po pero THERE'S NOTHING TO COMPARE AT ALL ! I wish they'll start comparing it with other cities cos right now, Iloilo is once again starts kicking off. The beauty and splendour of our place amazes everybody, and it's well supported by our national government and its officials. Even Angara tells it so. :)

He could rephrase it otherwise. Tell it to Valium, Dinho. :)

Anyway, anything you wanted to add or share to make our city and province more competitive. Right now, there's a lot of projects going on. Hopefully, there's more to come pa.

You think so? May be true, may not be so true. Been away for two years, so I can't totally agree with you. I just hope that with the current boom of Iloilo, the people will not let it get into their heads because they might be surprised to find other cities of a similar or better situation in the Philippines. My CPU classmates were always proud of the humility of the Ilonggo people - I hope that you guys will not lose this very good and exemplary character in the process... which is something we Ilonggos across the strait still need to learn. Oh and take not that I haven't made any comparisons here in the Iloilo thread. I was simply saying asking you guys to take the criticisms in stride and not to resort to personal attacks.

I agree. I want to see Iloilo City at par with other cities of Europe being historical, cultural, etc. There's so much Iloilo could offer than commercialism, etc. I wish the city government will bank more in historical and cultural aspect of the city like they're keeness with commercialism, industrial and corporate.

I believe so. And I'm glad and proud of it. I just wish they'll maintain the momentum of progress back home rather than focusing on with other political matters. If other cities are developing, well and good. And I don't think it'll really affect Iloilo's development right now if they are. Iloilo City in Trenas hand is an absolute miracle. He might be Eazyboy remember him? He was a Cebuano guy who didn't even seem to know any Ilonggo words. Could you even make dual ID's? I've tried to change my ID after I reported the personal attacks some of you folks had against me but it didn't work. The server said this e-mail has been in use and cannot be changed (something like that anyway). Right now, the best thing you folks could do is to stop being so insecure that you resort to making personal attacks and low blows when faced with criticism. That is my contribution to this thread, after all, most of you guys were my schoolmates at CPU so I hope you would all behave well and know how to react APPROPRIATELY in different circumstances.

hi, im from cebu, an active member of the cebu thread, observation ko lang po, why do we have to conclude that eazyboy is from cebu, we dont even have facts to support statements like that guy is from cebu kaya sana i reserve na lang muna natin yung mga duda natin, until we can provide a hard proof na he is from cebu talaga. medyo irresponsible ata yung conclusion na ganyan kasi we in cebu thread ay nananahimik lamang, you dont have to drag us sa gulo niyo. and if ever na prove nyo na taga cebu talaga yung tao na yun, let us know, marami kami from cebu forum na maghahanap sa taong to. im sorry i have to talk in tagalog, i dont know ilonggo kasi. peace.

JBLCF Arevalo: Soaring high with PQA Award
By Janice V. Busil

Colors narrate stories. Our personalities are depicted by hues and tints. Our heritage is a sum of different chroma and saturation. Each nuance and shade conveys a particular message. Each intensity and tone is a window to our soul.

Historically, yellow is eponymous to People Power. Spiritually, white signifies purity and peace. Socially, red shouts out courage. Metaphorically, blue is royal. For JBLCF, green can only mean one thing - the 2005 PQA Award.

"Commitment, love, passion and dedication is our service. Magalit na ang magalit," says Dr. Mary Lou Arcelo, chairman of JBLCF's Board of Trustees in a press conference held at JBLCF Molo last March 28, 2006.

John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation Arevalo Incorporated is the recipient of the 2005 Philippine Quality Award (PQA) for commitment to Quality Management. The 34-year-old stellar institution in terms of maritime training brushed elbows with the country's three other gigantic names. The NYK Fil Ship Management, Incorporated bagged the 2005 PQA for mastery in quality management; University of Santo Tomas and Centro Escolar University were both awarded with PQA for proficiency in quality management.

The 8th PQA awarding ceremony was held at the Grand Ballroom of the Dusit Hotel in Makati City last March 15, 2006. The green crystal trophy was officially handed to Dr. Mary Lou Arcelo and to Dr. Ralph Pador, JBLCF-Arevalo Administrator, by Director Virgilio P. Fulgencio, the Executive Director of the Department of Trade and Industry Center for Industrial Competitiveness. The said historical act was assisted by Mr. Raul Hernandez, chairman of the PQA Board of Judges, Vice Chairman Filemon Berba Jr; DAP President Dr. Eduardo Gonzales; Ma. Teresa Bagaman, Award Administrator for the Private Sector; PQA President Jaime Aquino and Governor of the DTI Board of Investments, Francis Ferrer.

The Philippine Quality Award Program, a separate entity from that of the Philippine Quality Awards for Business Excellence, was born during the regime of former President Fidel V. Ramos through Executive Order 448. Also known as the Philippine Quality Award Act, the program was institutionalized through Republic Act 9013 and was signed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on February 28, 2001. PQA program makes use of the seven point criteria that was patterned after the Balbridge National Quality Award in the US. The criteria are as follows: desk evaluation and consensus review by trained PQA assessors, site visit of applicant organizations, and final judges review by a panel of Board of Judges. Managed by the Development Academy of the Philippines and by the Philippine Society for Quality, the 8-year-old award-giving body has given distinctions to 19 private corporations, 5 government agencies, and 3 educational institutions including JBLCF.

JBLCF-Arevalo has scribbled its name in the pages of our history being the only maritime college and the top-flight institution outside Manila garnering such prestigious award.

"Our goal is not solely to reap awards and recognition, it is more directed towards producing quality and globally-competitive graduates not only for the school but for the whole country," Dr. Pador sincerely expressed to the faculty and staff after returning from Manila. According to him, the award is going to be more of a challenge than a victory. "It is another step in a ladder of challenges which the school has to move up to," he added.

The lofty Dr. Arcelo formally stated with utmost confidence that in the years to come, the school will sustain its role of being a bastion of maritime education in the country. She too delivered that providing quality education is not an option for the institution but a responsibility to its stakeholders.

The members of the Quality Steering committee who perpetually worked day and night pointed out that in the process of preparing the documents needed, they were able to identify strong points that helped improved the weak aspects.

The hardworking committee is composed of Dr. Benelyn P. Batiduan as chairman, Engr. Neal Sobrejuanite, Captain Denny Docto, Engr. Ronnie Surmieda, Capt. Conrado Tabanda, Mrs. Emely Palomero, Dr. Geneva Eler and Mrs. Louella Bernas as category champions and Dr. Melchor Mangramo, Dr. Roberto Somosa, 3/M Rene Fullon, 3/M Venerado Lamasan and Ms. Teresita Salcedo as members.

Indeed, JBLCF-Arevalo regained the long-lost glory of the city by proving to the country and to the world that Ilonggos are no-ordinary citizens. Thank you for making us proud!

The last time I was there was 3 years ago but for a town they already have lots of Big Commercial Buildings like Jaro in the mid-80's...
grabe ang Dumangas. Hands down gid ako kay Distura for doing his job well. Tani damo pa gid nga municipalities sang Iloilo ang magsunod sa Dumangas. I like to see Dumangas developing ... would it be more competitive like Iloilo City? Right now, Passi City is so slow in development amidst few new commercial buildings in place. The only towns nga makita ko to compete with Iloilo City on later part will be Pavia and Oton. These two, given a chance will surely soar high.

An Ilonggo is someone who speaks the Ilonggo dialect. So I am an Ilonggo. My mom was born in Iloilo. That gives me more reason to say I am Ilonggo. I lived in Iloilo from High School til my college. And I am also Negrense because I reside in Negros Island. A person from Dumaguete is considered a Cebuano because he speaks the CEbuano dialect. What gives you the right to say that? What insult are you talking about. In fact, I am starting to be a bit ashamed of calling myself an Ilonggo because you folks have a hard time dealing with criticism and always resort to - again - personal attacks and low blows.

As for your query Kirby, I was in Iloilo just a week before I left with the PI. In fact, my last two weeks had been spent island hopping. I even drove all the way to BEAUTIFUL Cebu City and stayed for 3 days there. People in Bacolod always have to put up with having to go to Iloilo when processing passports and other pertinent documents since Iloilo is and always will be the regional capital - as you folks would say.

let's focus more on Iloilo's development guys rather than entertaining these brouhahas .. here's one good thing happening in our province right now.

DTI-Iloilo slates 1st OTOP Fair

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) - Iloilo in partnership with the Ilonggo Producers Association (IPA) and the Iloilo Small and Medium Enterprise Development Foundation, Inc. is organizing the One Town One Product (OTOP) Fair 2006 on April 3-9, 2006 at the SM City Activity Center, Iloilo City. This event will give an opportunity for selected municipalities in the Province of Iloilo to launch and showcase their priority products that they want to be known for. OTOP is the priority program of the current administration intended to create employment and promote entrepreneurship.

Of the 43 municipalities that were invited, eighteen (18) have confirmed their participation to the said fair. The products to be showcased are: fresh and dried pineapple - Passi City; fresh and dried mango - Igbaras; high value crops - Alimodian; banana (lakatan) - Lambunao; rice wine - Pototan; steamed blue crabs - Banate; bandi - San Joaquin; banana chips - Tigbauan; fish noodles - Barotac Viejo; pottery - San Miguel; handwoven products - Oton and Miag-ao; ginger brew - Badiangan; abacacraft - Janiuay; deboned bangus - Dumangas; bamboo & wood furniture and furnishings - Maasin, Ajuy and New Lucena.

The OTOP Fair 2006 will formally open on April 3 at 3:00 pm with Mayor Raul C. Tupas, President of the League of Municipalities in Iloilo as the guest of honor. Local Chief Executives of the participating exhibitors and the member-agencies of the Iloilo SMED Foundation, Inc. are also invited. The exhibit is open to the public 10:00 am to 9:00 pm.

This fair is the first to be conducted in the Province of Iloilo and is intended to be a regular annual event aimed at promoting the priority products of the municipalities in Iloilo.

It doen't matter. Next time is good time. Puli ka man January next year ah. I'm sure makakuha ka gid mga pics sa aton. Damo kamo mapuli?

sa diin na? sa Guess the City thread?
why not?

I could not recognise anything at all from afar ... hehehe.
sign of old age, amigo ... wear your glasses. I'm sure makita mo gid sang husto.

absolutely right. Dapat gid man may ara kita regulation sa bagay nga ini ... masabad ang damo billboards. Magamo sa panulokan especially kung naga-drive ka.
the city hall approved it already. I'm sure they'll do something about it in the next few months.

pwede na pang-postcard no? Sin-o gani nagapamangkot about sa postcard, etc ah?
postcard shots. Okay gid ina. Hope we can produce our own postcards. Paano kay daw puro lang Miag-ao Church abi .. or you can barely even see one.

big development in Jaro area towards Leganes na. Di ba dira ina pakadto sa leganes area? Nalabayan ina namaon sang pakadto kami sa Roxas City and Passi City. Area along that highway were almost filled up na with new subdivisons and small commercial buildings. I guess in few years time, damo pa gid development nga makita naton between Jaro and Leganes.
looks like we're supporting different towns within the city's periphery. I'm sure there's a healthy competition between these three, OTON-LEGANES-PAVIA.

kung sa labay lang, nakalabay na ko da several times going to Molo district.pero secluded ang village nga ina so you can barely seen it from the main road ... mangilala ta da Jon para makasulod man ta ... hehehe.
ok then. Nice one. Hope to visit someday.

Ngaa abi mo Jaro lang kag La Paz? hehehe .. Mandurriao has a fair share din sa development sang city. Like what Chymera told me few months ago, "remember that SM City, Smallville, et are located in Mandurriao District and so with the newest branch of Iloilo Supermart". Tuod gid man .. Mandurriao used to be a housing district of the city pero it is slowly turning into a commercial area as well like Jaro and LaPaz. With the closing of the old airport, Mandurriao will shine more due to the plan CBD within the area. Let's see what else Mandurriao could offer .. :)
you're right to say that. I forgot Mandurriao, which apparently is the center of development in the city at the moment. I hpe Mandurriao will continue to bloom. It's a nice place. Full of subdivisions sa palibot. I wish they'll transform along its main road into a commercial one.

That's a very conventional labeling... what if I was born in Bosnia-Herzegovina and I studied Ilonggo dialect and I am so fluent and I have good command of this language and I can speak this dialect... then you can call me an Ilonggo?

And also, there are two kinds of criticism (1) Constructive and (2) Destructive. How we address things can greatly affect how we mean by things. It's not what you say but how you say it. Me... definitely I would be offended by destructive criticism... and it wouldnt really help me.

And constitutionally speaking.... Iloilo is the regional Capital of Western Visayas. Will I think if you would like to change it, then you can go to the congress and lobby a bill for that.

Ay ambot lang ah... mga Kasimanwa!!!!! Go lang Go!!!!!!!!!! Go for gold... :)

I have no doubts of Dumangas bid for cityhood (and so with Pototan). They have the capacity indeed. But I guess, they need to make their municipality more commercial before making it as a city like Passi. I don't find amusing visiting a place called city that looks very rural and barriotic in nature. I hope that any municipality in Iloilo that wanted to become a city should start taking building buildings and create a proper city centre.

We hope that Mayor Jerry would take a second look at this matter so as to obviate problems on environmental issues and concerns.

lol. I'm thinking why some people seems so competitive (in a wrong sense) to compare one city from the other. No other city/ies in the Philippines was ever mentioned here in our thread then suddenly someone pass by .. and hey, he started comparing and/or bashing. he he.
Maybe they think they're competitive. lol. The question is whether Iloilo wants to compare with them. Iloilo has so much to offer, more than what the eyes meet. It's history is written all over. With that alone, Iloilo is indeed a great city.

I agree. I want to see Iloilo City at par with other cities of Europe being historical, cultural, etc. There's so much Iloilo could offer than commercialism, etc. I wish the city government will bank more in historical and cultural aspect of the city like they're keeness with commercialism, industrial and corporate.
This is more ideal, I guess. If we have to keep Iloilo distinct, we better lined it up with European cities considering of Iloilo's good historical and cultural background almost similar or akin to Europe. It's simply amazing.

ILOILO CITY and PROVINCE

Iloilo is a province of the Philippines located in the Western Visayas region. Its capital is Iloilo City and is located at the southeast portion of Panay island, bordering Antique to the west and Capiz to the north. Just off Iloilo's southeast coast is the island-province of Guimaras and across Panay Gulf and Guimaras Strait is Negros Occidental.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/chymera00/iloilocitypics/IloiloLocation.jpg

Located 238 statute miles from Manila, Iloilo is the gateway of the Western Visayas Region. The province comprises the southeastern part of Panay Island. Iloilo is 55 minutes by plane from Manila. Should you opt to go by sea, Sulpicio Lines, Negros Navigation and Aboitiz have ships plying from Manila (19 hours).

Natural boundaries, such as mountain ranges with peaks as high as 7,000 ft., lie between Iloilo and Antique on the west and Capiz on the north. Mainland Iloilo is composed of plain interspersed with upland portions. The capital, Iloilo City, rests between the Iloilo and Batino rivers which from the angle of a nose. This location is the root of the province's old name, ilong-ilong which means "noselike".

http://static.flickr.com/16/21375532_ec0a272bdb.jpg?v=0

Iloilo province, and its beautiful city, ranks as one of the country's foremost centers of culture, industry and trade. Located on the southwestern tip of Panay Island between the Iloilo River and the Guimara Strait, its attributes as the repository of architectural and artistic legacies, as the promising point of progress in aquaculture, and as a trove of unexplored tourist attractions give it an allure so bewitching as not to be missed.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/chymera00/iloilocitypics/IloiloBannerMalls.jpg

Iloilo is the cradle of early Philippine civilization. The telltale marks of such cultural influences live on in the century-old houses, the period churches, the colorful festivals, and in the enterprising bloodline of its people. Iloilo has a glorious past as the land's great sugarbowl and the locale of the haciendas of the old rich - whose scions and daughters turned down the centuries into the dons and donas of powerful economic dynasties.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/chymera00/iloilocitypics/RomanCatholicChurches.jpg

Some of the testimonies to this awesome heritage are the churches. Nowhere else can church tours prove so rewarding. The Miag-ao Fortress Church is a grand example of a medieval bastion church with onrnate floral designs on the facade; another colossal monument is the San Joaquin Church and cemetery known for its bas relief featuring the Castilian and Moorish wars, while its cemetery is picturesque for its hexagonal chapel with rose windows and twin-tiered balustrades that lead to its entrance; meanwhile, three staircases lead to the historic rock; whereas the Rennaissance - inspired Molo Church and orphanage, the Asilo de Molo, are unique for their architecture as well as for a rare product, hand-embroidered barong Pilipino in pina cloth; the Pavia Church is a red brick and coral windows cases and rightfully deserves a place in one's travelogue. These churches are no farther than two hours' distance from each other.

Iloilo province is primarily the commercial and trade center of Western Visayas, with commercial, industrial development and rural banks, financial and investment houses, insurance companies, and realestate agencies and developers. Nevertheless, agriculture is the province's main source of livelihood. In fact, Iloilo's production of rice, sugar and mango has made it one of the country's top agricultural producers.

http://static.flickr.com/25/93600246_b6b952a8c8.jpg?v=0

The city's population represents a big manpower pool and a growing consumer market. Purchasing power is generally high given the favorable income distribution in Iloilo. Assuring the business sector of a steady supply of multi-skilled manpower are the city's 30 tertiary schools and 6 universities.

http://static.flickr.com/27/97900431_3c2e4a1703.jpg?v=0

Iloilo's is a byword for its famous festival - the Dinagyang, a local mardigras. Held every January in honor of the Infant Jesus, the festival is a major tourist attraction.

http://www.dinagyang.com/components/com_ponygallery/img_pictures/bola-bola3.jpg

Another even Iloilo is known for is the Paraw Regatta. Which is participated in by local and foreign sportsmen.

FLAVIO ZARAGOZA CANO - (1892-1965)

A well-known professor and researcher, Filemon Poblador, listed the three greatest poets in Spanish produced by the Philippines. Of the three, one was Iloilo's greatest poet -- Flavio Zaragoza Cano. The other two were Fernando Ma. Guerrero and Cecilio Apostol.

Some years ago the late Claro M. Recto bestowed signal distinction on Zaragoza Cano was not only the greatest Ilonggo poet in Spanish; he holds the same honor in the field of Hiligaynon poetry.

The distinguished bard hailed from Cabatuan, Iloilo, the hometown of another renowned Ilonggo, Tomas Confesor. His parents were Sinforoso Zaragoza y Casten and Agapita Cano y Montero. His birth took place on June 27, 1892, in barrio Janipaan of Cabatuan.

At the age of four Flavio was given to the care of his grandmother, Doña Petra Casten who three years later, sent him to the Centro Escolar de Molo under the Salas brothers. In this school his grades were sobresaliente (excellent).

His literary genius first showed itself in 1906, when he was only fourteen. He wrote a poem "Alma Joven", which was accepted for publication in Nuevo Heraldo. Two years later he obtained the Bachiller en Artes degree from the Instituto de Molo, where he was president of the Sociedad Recreativa Literencia.

After graduation he taught in the Escuela Parochial de Molo, administered by the Rev. Father Nicolas Valencia. It was at this time that he wrote his first zarsuela entitled "Ang Binunga sang Bisyo".

Helping in the campaign of Don Manuel Locsin, his teacher, for the governorship of Iloilo in the elections of 1906 made him desire to study law; so, in 1910, he sailed for Manila where he enrolled at the Escuela de Derecho and later at the Colegio de Derecho directed by Felipe Buencamino. In order to support himself and finance his studies, he worked as bookkeeper in the Farmacia Filipina in Binondo and at the same time taught school at the Colegio de Mercantil.

While in Manila, furor scribindi made him produce literary pieces which he contributed to La Vanguardia, Renacimiento, El Ideal and the Philippines Free Press (Spanish section) in Manila; El Tiempo, Makinaugalingon, and La Semana in Iloilo; The union in Mindanao; La Revolucion in Cebu; and the Philippine Republic in Hong Kong. He also had several articles published in Libertad, Renacimiento Filipino, Bayang Filipina, and Kahirup. He was also the director of the bilingual publication "Bugtot Pagui." His much inspired La Roca Eterna was published in Mexico.

The poet Flavio Zaragoza Cano found his muse in the person of Josefa Francisco of Manila. To marry her in 1914, he gave up his studies and dreams of becoming a lawyer.

After his marriage he took his wife to Albay, where he became manager and part-owner of a printing press and a newspaper, Heraldo Bicolandia.. In 1916, he managed a bazaar in Legaspi and also the Imprinta Monserrat in that town. In the same year, the people of Albay, Albay, in recognition of his literary powers and journalistic achievements, elected him to their municipal council.

Don Flavio always had soft heart for the poor and the laboring class. In 1917, in order to help the working man, he organized the first labor union in the Bicol region. One of his feats as a labor leader was the settling of the labor trouble in the steamship Vapor Poizat.

Five years in Bicol made the poet homesick for his native province, so in 1919 he came back to Iloilo. Here he at once plunged into full-time writing. He edited four papers simultaneously: Nuevo Heraldo, El Adalid, Baganiban, and El Pueblo. An oratorical contest was held that year at the Casino Español, and Don Flavio won the first prize of five hundred pesos. The following year, 1920, he again received another five hundred pesos when his poem won the first prize in another contest. From then on he was much in demand as public speaker, especially in the proclamation of town fiesta queens and barrio indays.

His hometown of Cabatuan called him to act as municipal secretary in 1922; then he served in the capacity for the municipality of Dumangas, Iloilo, from 1923 to 1927.

Although he was not able to finish his study of law, he was given a license as notary public, which professor he practiced from 1923-1931. After his stint as municipal secretary of Dumangas, he became the private secretary of Senator Jose M. Arroyo.

His first major honor as a poet came in 1926, the same year that he was appointed secretary of the Provincial Board of Iloilo. He was crowned as "Rey de Balagtas en Poesia en Dialecta Bisaya." The second honor came in May, 1938, when he was proclaimed "Poet Laureate" and awarded a silver medal during a velada in Bacolod City. As further recognition of his talents, he was admitted member of the Academia Española de la Lengua Castellana and the Sociedad de Literatos y Artistas Filipinos. In 1929 he gained national recognition when he won the Zobel Prize for Spanish poetry.

His government service was unbroken from 1923 to 1934 when, after passing the Civil Service Examination, he was appointed as interpreter in the Iloilo Court of First Instance. He served in this capacity up to 1935.

In 1935, his first book Cantos A España, an anthology of selected verses was in fact a glorious tribute to mother Spain, at the same time a triumph of the Spanish language.

The work that brought him national fame was his magnum opus, the book-length De Mactan a Tirad. This book was entered in the memorable Commonwealth Literary Contest in 1940. Impartial critics as well as the author him-self expected it to win the coveted first prize. To the author’s mortification and the critics' surprise, however, the work won only second prize. Next to Jesus Balmori's entry in the category of Spanish poetry.

Zaragoza refused the second prize of P2,000 and, at the presentation of Prizes by President Quezon, he tore up the check in front of the President, then stalked out of august hall amidst the stunned hush of the audience. The poet contended that his work was superior to that of Balmori in historical facts, in style, in beauty of expression and in eloquence.

As far as is known, the irrepressible Ilonggo poet was the only person who had defied the explosive temper of the fiery Quezon by such an impulsive act in the president's presence. The late Dr. Severo Hervas, Zaragoza's close associate, could hardly believe Don Flavio's action. "Muy terrible!" Dr. Hervas used to say when reminded of the incident.

Pototan Astrodome - crown jewel of Western Visayas’ rice granary town

By TEDDY SUMARAY

POTOTAN, Iloilo – The newly completed Pototan Astrodome is easily the most imposing structure in this perennial rice granary municipality in central Iloilo.

Standing on a 3,000-square meter area, it dominates the landscape of the expansive town plaza. Its dome gleams in the sunlight and the fine architectural and engineering design cannot fail to catch the attention of the viewer.
Originally, the structure was planned as a covered gymnasium for various sports activities, especially basketball. But as the work progressed, revisions and changes in the plans were also made.

It is often said that Rome wasn’t built in a day. This saying aptly applies to this particular project.
First conceived by Cong. Licurgo Tirador in 1992 as a gift and as a lasting legacy to the people of Pototan, it was completed only in 2006.

It was really a grand design in keeping with the ascendancy of Pototan among the towns of Iloilo.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) was tasked to undertake the planning and construction of the complex. The 2nd Iloilo Engineering District was then under Engineer Roberto Doromal. The initial appropriation was P4 million. But the project encountered delays due to fiscal adjustments.

Then in 1998, Engineer Alfredo B. Panaguiton took over the helm of the 2nd Iloilo Engineering District. Work on the project resumed at a fast pace with funds available all throughout the period of construction. The cooperation of all the leaders of Pototan - Cong. Tirador who later became mayor, Mayor Manuel Parcon who also became congressman, Cong. Arthur Defensor and the incumbent Mayor Pablo Perez was also a key factor in the realization of the project.

The officials of DPWH, from the national to the regional level, also provided full support in the course of the project implementation. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who has special sentimental attachment to Pototan, also gave her support and approval. The astrodome is also the product of the labor of love of the men and women in the 2nd Iloilo Engineering District.

Today, the Pototan Astrodome is now fully completed and ready for use. The total cost of the project amounted to P45,645,000. Twenty four million pesos (P24,000,000) was initially released by then Cong. Licurgo Tirador from his community develop fund. But Cong. Defensor saw the grand design and pursued the project to its eventual completion.

As a basketball court, the facilities of the complex are all first class and up to international standard. The wood parquet covering the court is of imported maple wood. The electronic system is high-tech and ultra modern. There is adequate water supply and the comfort rooms are really designed for comfort.

The seating capacity on the lower portion is 2,500 persons while the bleachers can accommodates more than 3,000 spectators.

The lightning is of highest quality and the acoustics are simply perfect. This is because the old stage whose shell has been retained can also be for sophisticated cultural performances.
Indeed, Pototan is fortunate in many ways. Even during the Spanish times it had always been a progressive and prosperous town.

It is the region’s granary and the inhabitants are relatively rich. The town also has produced many outstanding leaders and heroes. The names of Pascual and Teresa Magbanua are enshrined in our history as fighters for freedom.
Other leaders of note are Sen. Espiridon Guanco, Assemblyman Federico Tirador, and Gov. Mariano Peñaflorida who served as member of the Monetary Board and as congressman, Cong. Ricardo Ladrido, Cong. Licurgo Tirado who also served as Iloilo Governor, Pototan mayor, 1971 Constitutional Convention delegate and Iloilo board member; longest serving mayor of Pototan Manuel Parcon who also served as congressman, noted constitutionalist and 1971 Constitutional Convention delegate Ramon Gonzales and a host of the other outstanding achievements.

Lilia Yusay Gonzales is ex-oficio of the Iloilo provincial board being the president of the Philippine Councilor League Iloilo Chapter.

Its strategic location has virtually made Pototan as an alternate capital of Iloilo province. The Iloilo Provincial Hospital is located in the town. The Iloilo Electric Cooperative has also its headquarters here. The Jalaur-Suague River Irrigation System, the biggest irrigation system in Panay, has its main office in Pototan. The modern provincial jail is also based in this town. The regional drug rehabilitation center and the regional mental hospital are all found in Pototan.

Pototan also boasts of being the Christmas lighting capital of Western Visayas. All municipal streets are concreted and the national roads access to Mina, Zarraga, Barotac Nuevo and Passi City are in very good condition. The provincial market costing more than P100 million is also in Pototan.

But the Pototan Astrodome, the newest physical layer of growth to rise in the town, affirms the primacy of Pototan among the towns of Iloilo.

It is indeed a crown jewel, a symbol of greatness of Pototan. It is a testimony to the highest aspirations and noblest dreams of the townpeople.

The Pototan Astrodome is the collective pride not only of the people of Pototan but also of the people of Iloilo. It is a dream fulfilled. It is ambition realized. It was conceived and it was born.

Independent artists of Iloilo: leaving a lasting mark in local arts

ILOILO City - Ilonggo artist are naturally sensitive and passionate in their visual expressions. They posses an unfathomed artistic perspective that varies from social realism to purely abstract imagination reflected in their every artworks and canvass. Ilonggo artists are closely bonded in their cultural heritage and history.

They are gifted with a passionate soul to express the longing of their heart and appreciation for their cultural roots.

But in these contemporary time of gadgets, internet and expensive lifestyle, many young Ilonggo artists lost sensitivity and connection with their past. Their artistic gifts and creativity had been slowly influenced by western culture and the power of media, resulting for many young Ilonggo artists to neglect their craft and forget their passion for local arts.

Another alarming reality is most of them slowly embraced the commercial trend of arts, a degrading mentality that weakened the quality of their artworks in terms of ethical values and sensitivity to social issues.

But amid the declining standard for local art industry, a group of gifted and versatile Ilonggo artists hopes to revive the pride of young artists in Iloilo City by empowering them with the right attitude and perception.

The Independent Artists of Iloilo (IAI) was unified through these positive perspective and objective since October of 2005 by spearheading art exhibits in various parts of the city including Days Hotel Iloilo, Coffee Break branches and Museo Iloilo, the sanctuary of Ilonggo arts.

The circle of exceptional Ilonggo artists who were considered as pillars of IAI are Norman Posecion, Carlo Juntado, J Scott Sarria, Liby Limoso, Faith Anastacio, Neil Capiñanes, Arthur Jusa and Joseph Firmeza.

Museo Iloilo Resident Art Instructor, Norman Posecion, has been active in inspiring young Ilonggo artists to embrace the essence of arts as catalyst of change for a few years already. Hunky hotelier, graphic artist and event organizer, J Scott Sarria has proven his passion for arts by introducing trendsetting art mediums (like digital artworks and distinctive ways to express one’s artistic style).

Carlo Juntado, on the other hand, is a college clinical instructor by profession but his interest in arts led him to become one of the IAI founding members that pursue the expansion of Ilonggo visual artistry.

Liby Limoso known as “Jack Norman” in many of his artworks and canvas, dedicate his life to empower young artists as fine arts instructor at the University of San Agustin. His versatility and expertise proved to be essential as layout artist of Iloilo Premier, a local lifestyle magazine.

Faith Anastacio may be a typical elementary school teacher in Estancia, Iloilo but this good-looking educator has an artistic side to show. Her social relevant artworks like “10,000 Years Ago” that tackles the issue of breast cancer among women today emotionally touch many art enthusiasts.

Neil Capiñanes graduated last month from his architectural course at the University of San Agustin. He vowed to dedicate his life encouraging young Ilonggo artists to improve their craft as IAI active member.

The same goes for Arthur Jusa, he earned a degree in architecture at the University of San Agustin. His artworks and passion for local art industry inspires many people and contribute to the strength of the group in fulfilling their goals.

Finally, Joseph Firmeza aside from his hectic job as manager of Music Room, the city’s newest sing-along lounge at St. Elizabeth building, Valeria Street, actively participates in the various activities and exhibits of IAI.

“We want young Ilonggo artists to grow, improve and explore unconventional ways to express their arts rather than getting themselves stagnant in the conformist art style.

Thus, we can open better venue for budding new artists,” Norman Posecion said with deep conviction during a brief meeting with him at The Promenade last Friday, March 31, 2006.

His effort to expand and inspire many Ilonggo artists led him to annually spearhead the15-day “Summer Art Workshop” at Museo Iloilo for adults and children during summer vacation for two hours daily.

“Aside from inspiring young Ilonggo artists, we also aspire to reclaim the dignity and integrity of Ilonggo artist as creative people that value quality of artworks, craftsmanship first before commercial appeal. Since we believe that an artwork contains the soul of the artist, we encourage them to show their distinct individuality and sensitivity in every artwork they make for exhibits,” he added.

For J Scott Sarria, a well-thought and distinctly conceived art exhibit stimulates interest for many artists to explore new possibilities, style and strengthen their versatility. For him, maverick ideas usually create impact and impressions that leads to a better art appreciation.

To prove IAI’s different and inspiring approach in arts, they already held various art exhibits like “Ikonograpiya” at Days Hotel Iloilo (February 2006), annual Art Talk co-sponsored by Museo Iloilo (January 2006) and Testing Ground also at Days Hotel Iloilo (March to April 2006).

Next month, they visualize holding a magic-realism exhibit to entice those art enthusiasts that dig fantasy-inspired artworks.

Aside from Days Hotel Iloilo, their previous artworks are also displayed at Coffee Break branches. Most of their successful exhibits were participated by budding young artists from Central Philippines University, University of San Agustin and other private and public schools in Iloilo.

Through their invitation and encouragement to many artists, the group hopes to generate deeper appreciation of the Ilonggos for local arts and establish significant improvements.

Since their artist circle was formed, these brilliant and prolific artists are making waves in the field of visual arts in Iloilo.

They are destined to inspire many Ilonggo artists to embrace local arts as a pathway to a deeper cultural appreciation. And as independent artists aspiring to leave a lasting mark, they believe that indeed liberal thoughts and freedom is power to make a difference.

Sinulog and Dinagyang Festivals face off sa Aliwan Festival....hehehe! Sadya gid 'ni!!!

Battle of the Festivals in Manila

Sparks are set to fly at this year’s “Aliwan Fiesta” as once again, the Philippines’ grandest, loudest, and most colorful festivals come together to compete in the national championship of festivals on April 27-29.

"Aliwan Fiesta 2006" is shaping up to bring excitement to a whole new level this year. For the very first time, the Sinulog Festival of Cebu joins the ranks of dance contingents gearing up to unseat the three-time champion contingent, Iloilo’s Dinagyang Festival.

Will the newcomers, the Cebuanos of the Sinulog Festival triumph and finally break the winning streak of the long-running champions, Ilonggos of the Dinagyang Festival? Or will the Ilonggos go on to win four-peat? Which festival will reign supreme? Only one thing is for certain: the heat of the competition brought about by this much-anticipated rivalry makes this year’s "Aliwan Fiesta" worth watching.

Not only will the Sinulog and Dinagyang Festivals face off for the much-coveted R1M plum prize; the grand prize winner of this year’s festival also claims the honor of being named as the ultimate Philippine festival.

The Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC), together with the cities of Manila and Pasay and the Cultural Center of the Philippines, sets the stage for another sure-fire crowd-drawer as "Aliwan Fiesta" returns on its fourth year as the grandest national championship of all festivals.

"Aliwan Fiesta 2006" is set to bring together a record number of 30 dance contingents from all over the country, the biggest number of participants in its fourth year run.

The festival is highlighted by spirited street dancing native to the participating regions, exhibiting the richness and diversity of Philippine culture and tradition.

Thousands of the country’s finest craftsmen, street performers, and amateur models will gather to compete in Dance Parade Competition, Float Competition, and Reyna ng Aliwan beauty pageant.

Holding the reputation for giving the biggest cash prizes ever, "Aliwan Fiesta" pushes the limits by giving nearly R3 million this year.

The grand prize winner will get R1 million; with second and third runners up to win R500,000 and R250,000 respectively. The top 10 finalists will each get R50,000.

The fiesta will bring together the country’s most popular fiestas such as Pedrista Festival (Quezon City) Marikina Festival, and Pakalog Festival (Pasig) of NCR; Panagbenga Festival (Baguio City) representing CAR; Region I’s Pamulinawen Festival (Laoag City) and Agdamdamili Festival (San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte); Region II’s Sabutan Festival (Palanan, Isabela), Pinilisa Festival (Jones, Isabela) and Sambali Cagayana Festival (Baggao, Cagayan);

Region III’s Halamanan Festival (Guiguinto, Bulacan) Sto. Niño Festival (Malolos, Bulacan), Angel Festival (San Rafael, Bulacan); Region IV’s Sumakah Festival (Antipolo City) and Boling-Boling Festival (Catanauan, Quezon); Region V’s HimagUlaw Festival (Placer, Masbate) and Pili Festival (Sorsogon City); Region VI’s Dinagyang Festival (Iloilo City), Tultugan Festival (Maasin, Iloilo), Kahilyawan Festival (Santa Barbara, Iloilo), Pintados de Pasi Festival (Passi City, Iloilo) and Babaylan Festival (Bago City, Negros Occidental); Region VII’s Sinulog Festival (Cebu City); Region IX’s Hermosa Festival (Zamboanga City) and Pasalamat Festival (Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur); Region X’s Diyandi Festival (Iligan City); Region XII’s Halad Festival (Pigcawayan, North Cotabato), and Kalilangan Festival (General Santos City); and ARMM’s Padang-Padang Festival, (Parang, Maguindanao), Meguyaya Festival (Maguindanao), and Kambulang Festival (Parang, Maguindanao).

The Macavinta House is one of the three houses given citation by the Iloilo City Heritage Conservation Council (ICCHC) for preserving its historical significance of its architecture and also for observing the ICCHC guidelines in conservation and preservation. (Reprinted from Iloilo Yearbook 2005)

It looks like a modified European Castle amidst modern edifices facing Gen. Hughes St., Iloilo City.

In 1945, after World War II, the Ferraris Family bought the lot and built the house on it. The year after, the same family sold the house to a certain Mrs. Mirasol who commissioned architect Luis Dichupa to do some renovations on it.

It was in 1977 when Esperanza Mirasol and husband Pedro Macavinta acquired the rights from the other Mirasol siblings and, with sons Howard and Glenn, made the house the family residence. The second floor was then leased by and housed the offices of the Bureau of Forestry and Office of Civil Defense.

In 1994, the Macavinta Family leased the first floor of the house to the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics. From 1995 to 2002, the house was vacant but it was maintained by the family to keep it in good condition.

In 2003, entrepreneur Louise Jardeleza-Cordova and son Miguel leased and transformed the Macavinta House into Afrique’s Restaurant, its length of stay thereat only time can tell.

Impressive Pototan! I wish to visit their municipal Astrodome one day. Pototan indeed is progressive in its own right. And I agree, Pototan is just right to be considered as an alternative capital of the province of Iloilo with several provincial and regional institutions located in this municipality. Kudos to the good deeds of their mayor and municipal officials. :)

BOOMING CITY
ILOILO City is bursting at the seams due to the big influx of investors and infrastructure projects from both private and government initiatives.
Anywhere in the city are massive construction works for buildings and houses – to the envy of other cities and provinces.
The marketing knack of Mayor Jerry is now bearing fruits.

I go with Francis Te laugh. lol. Such is Lapsus Calami (Slip of the Pen) portion. That's why I visit the site everyday.. he he. It really made me laugh. Napaka-satirical ng dating minsan. But anyhow, I'm really glad to see Iloilo's development, etc. Mayor Trenas deserves a tap in his shoulder. He's really a working hard Mayor and truly an Atenean per se. :)

PHILIPPINE BAROQUE CHURCHES
(Manila, Bulacan, Ilocos Norte, Miag-ao)

The Philippines' Baroque churches are cited on the World Heritage List because of their unusual interpretation of a major artistic style. Baroque architecture, which was the dominant western style from around the mid-16th century until the death of France's Louis XIV shortly after 1700, reflects a life dominated by the desire to impress through exuberance and extravagance.

Although the style has produced celebrated works, it takes its name from barroco - Spanish for a large, irregular, and expensive pearl considered bizarre rather than beautiful. Baroque evolved as Europe was undergoing relentless religious wars; architecture and its ornamentation became tools to woo a congregation's loyalty.

The Filipino brand of baroque began in the late 16th century when Catholic missionaries came from Spain and Mexico. The local version contrasts with courtly Europe's rendition - although at first glance, there are the familiar gilding, florid floral themes, fully decorated pillars and fancy backgrounds. Four parishes in particular are considered of unquestionable importance to understanding the baroque attitude and human creativity.

STO. TOMAS DE VILLANUEVA CHURCH (Iloilo)
In Central Philippines, on the island of Panay, is the Vicarate of Miag-ao in Iloilo Province. Its Church of Santo Tomas de Villanueva is an Augustinian mission station built as a squat, massive fortress to protect townsfolk from Muslim invasion. Made of a distinct local yellow-orange sandstone, the fortress-church took ten years to build, beginning in 1797.

Miag-ao's church is ""the most outstanding example of the peripheral baroque style blended with embellishment [from] naïf folk motifs found in the Philippines,"" according to the 1992 report of Jorge Gazano, an architectural expert of ICOMOS, the United Nations' International Committee for Monuments and Sites. Any visitor will be able to translate the jargon into layman's language just by looking at the profusely ornamented church-front. Reigning over its fully hand-sculptured pediment is St. Christopher, dressed Filipino-farmer style with his pants rolled up, and carrying the Christ Child on his back. The holy figures stand beside coconut, papaya and guava trees ready for harvest. They were rendered by folk artisans working from their imagination and whatever guidance the priest, who had no architectural training, could offer. No similar tropical-Asian composition exists.

NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LA ASUNCION (Ilocos Sur)
Another mission that doubled originally as a fortress is Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion in Santa Maria town of Ilocos Sur, a province on the country's northwestern seaboard. The citadel complex was the hub for evangelizing pagan peoples living in adjacent highlands. The best way to appreciate the architectural mood is to ascend the church's grand stairway of 85 wide steps starting at the town proper. Another stairway descends to a circular cemetery overwhelmed by exuberant foliage and an air of romanticism.

SAN AGUSTIN CHURCH (Paoay, Ilocos Norte)
Moving northwards into the adjacent province of Ilocos Norte is the Church of San Agustin in Paoay town. Built from 1694 to between 1702 and 1710, it is the premier example of Philippine Earthquake Baroque, an architectural solution to the area's challenging, natural setting. Both sides of the nave are lined with the most voluminous stone buttresses seen around the islands. They are decorated with huge scrolls, and topped by decorative pinnacles. A coralstone belltower stands a safe distance away to spare the sanctuary in case of collapse. Originally, the church roof was thatched; and it is conjectured so that buttresses not only support walls but give roof access during fire and typhoon.

Let's spice up thread XIII with a few photos I took these past few days: :)

I think this is the site of the new SM Supermarket at Jaro Town Square. Notice they've painted the place with SM Supermarket's trademark yellow.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/IAMME00/100_6994.jpg
I don't know what building this is that they're constructing beside Residence Hotel, but I like the way the workers are perched up there.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/IAMME00/100_7067.jpg
I don't think this overpass was really necessary (same with most other overpasses in the city). Nevertheless, I think it's the best overpass in the city since they repainted it.

Miss Teen Philippines WV 2006: The saga of beauties
By Janice V. Busil

Our definition of beauty is vague. Oftentimes we assume that anything that is pleasing to the eyes is beautiful. We reflexly relate the idea of beauty to physical form. The picture of a goddess-like face and a flawless milky skin linger in our thoughts when we utter the three-vowelled word.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/04/05/teen4.jpg

Of course, the superficial aspect is just a quarter of its deeper meaning. In the real sense, true beauty is comprised of good physical features, oozing confidence and admirable talent paired with great intellectual and emotional intelligence.

Last April 1, 2006, 11 teens, 14 to 18 years old, from different parts of the region vied for the most- coveted title of Miss Teen Philippines Western Visayas 2006. The three chosen candidates will represent the region to the up-coming national finals in Manila.

The stage sizzled as the real-life Barbies did their cat-walk and their production number clad in the hip and cool Jag Jeans outfit. In a blink of an eye, the 3rd level of the SM City Iloilo was turned into a modern-day Olympus as the juvenile goddesses, on their stilettos and casual wear, gracefully inched towards the amazed crowd. A thundering applause and deafening screams enveloped the place as the young ladies breathtakingly emerged on stage on their glamorous gowns.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/04/05/teen1.jpg

The CSF-draining question and answer portion came next. As expected, the candidates wittingly answered proving that behind those pretty faces there are active and healthy brain cells.

After having hard time contemplating whether who of the eleven alluring and smart girls will be given the chance to compete with other beauties in the Miss Teen Philippines 2006, the panel of judges made a tough decision. Miss Natalie Grace Roberts, Miss Ann Rency Costudio, and Miss Venna Ardales were officially proclaimed as Western Visayas' representatives. They will prove their prowess as they strive to become the Youth Empowerment for Self Reliance Inc. or YES! Foundation ambassadress.

Special awards were given to Chriscember Joy Nunez as Miss Congeniality, Venna Ardales as Best in Talent (held last March 30, 2006) and Best in Production Number, and Anne Nichole Bangiban as Miss Photogenic and Best in Evening Gown. Ann Rency Costudio was dubbed as the Face of Dermclinic 2006 and Best in Interview. Natalie Grace Roberts is this years' Miss Jag Jeans and Best in Casual Wear.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/04/05/teen3.jpg

Other participants were Jhelamae Mayormente, Cathy Ann Balogo, Rowena Tigmo, Tiffany Berjes Canira, Theresa Tagnawa, and Felecette Gumaguil.

Last year's WV representative Miss Joannah Marie Gonzales, who ended up being the 3rd runner up in Miss Teen Philippines 2005, hosted the pageant leaving the audience spell-bounded by her enigmatic charm. The stunning Miss Ella Marie Reyes, also a WV representative on last year's competition, assisted the dignified guests and judges in handing out awards.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/04/05/teen2.jpg

Miss Teen Philippines is a production of Image Network Management. The Miss Teen Philippines Western Visayas 2006 was made possible by Edgar Suelo, who was very emotional as he thanked the people who had helped him.

"This is not my best," he apologetically said with teary eyes. It must've been extremely hard for him to manage the occasion while his dear mother lies sick in the hospital.

The event went smooth and successful. The almost-a-dozen young beauties has eradicated the 'nothing-but-techie' and 'MTV-robots' notions. They've affirmed that indeed they are the hope of our Fatherland.

Street sweeping world record holder seeks tourism's support
By Jay Dooma Balnig

THE man claimed to be the Master of Pain is now seeking the support of the Department of Tourism in his attempt to conduct a 24-hour non-stop marathon street sweeping in three municipalities in Iloilo.

Jess Caigoy said his performance would be on April 17 to 18. He will sweep the main streets of Leon town at 6 a.m. of April 27 from the public plaza to Alimodian public plaza at around 3 p.m. of the same date and subsequently in San Miguel public plaza at around 11 p.m. of the same date.

A simple closing ceremony program will mark the end of said attempt at Aleosan District Hospital tentatively at around 7 a.m. of April 18.

The local government of Leon is the main sponsor of the said world record attempt that probably passed the requirement for the inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Caigoy, a native of Leon, Iloilo has already tried several extraordinary and extreme dangerous exhibitions in public.

and Gov. Tupas to the Province of ILOILO....

Masadya pa ni next Election kay they will divide the ILOILO CITY into 2 Congressional Districts... so more budget for improvement and projects!

Hala Bira ILOILO! Sulong sa Pagbag-o!
Metro, approved na ini ang 2 congressional districts for City of Iloilo? I read this stuff ages ago pero wala pa ko kabati sang confirmation .. though there's a plan gid man. I think City Proper-Molo-Arevalo will be grouped as one whilst Jaro-LaPaz-Mandurriao in the second group. I hope ma-realised gid ang bagay nga ini. postcard shots. Okay gid ina. Hope we can produce our own postcards. Paano kay daw puro lang Miag-ao Church abi .. or you can barely even see one.
This is a really nice suggestion ... a good way to promote iloilo (galing daw ka outdated na guid sang postcard sbung, ePost Card basi pwede man). I'll bring that to mind next time kung may free time ako, maybe ma capitalize pa na sa ulihi :) like what Caloy said ... (ideas na naman)
you're right to say that. I forgot Mandurriao, which apparently is the center of development in the city at the moment. I hpe Mandurriao will continue to bloom. It's a nice place. Full of subdivisions sa palibot. I wish they'll transform along its main road into a commercial one.
That's what's most likely to happen once the Mandurriao airport is bided off. For sure, the winner will be one of the country's leading developer (whether it be Ayala, SM, RLC, or Megaworld).
Ei dont forget that Iloilo is naturally gifted... everything you need is there. Remember... we can create our own republic... Food? Goods? Sea? Land? People? Skills? everything you need is just in our backyard!
I agree, I suppose the perception of Iloilo and Ilonggos being laid-back stems from this reason ... Iloilo is naturally blessed with a lot of things ... like what you've mentioned

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/IAMME00/100_7003.jpg
nice photo IAMME, notice the structures sa right sang picture ... the big building at the back is the Hall of Justice, and the blackboard-colored building is the Castle Hotel, currently under rennovation.

Or pwede man Industrial Development instead of Commercial, like in Pavia's Case (in the future).

I agree, it seems a bit awful for a town being called a city pero it doesn't look even a bit urban. Like Passi City, just because there are big sugar centrals located there that pay big taxes, which contribute millions to the town's income, na qualify na siya as a city dayun ... Sa iban naman ya, ay indi na lang ;) ...
it's a challenge, Mars? Few more months to go na lang gid tuod.

Btw, I would like to thank Chymera of course for creating Iloilo's blog. It's really helpful for all of us here abroad. At times we used it to introduce our place to our friends who wanted to see what Iloilo looks like nowadays. Plus of course, send the link to our good Ilonggo friends, classmates and batchmates to keep them attuned with the recent developments in the city and province of Iloilo.
Thanks man for promoting my website ... I'm also trying my best para ma improve ko siya

Macavinta House

The Macavinta House is one of the three houses given citation by the Iloilo City Heritage Conservation Council (ICCHC) for preserving its historical significance of its architecture and also for observing the ICCHC guidelines in conservation and preservation. (Reprinted from Iloilo Yearbook 2005)

It looks like a modified European Castle amidst modern edifices facing Gen. Hughes St., Iloilo City.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/04/05/macavinta2.jpg

In 1945, after World War II, the Ferraris Family bought the lot and built the house on it. The year after, the same family sold the house to a certain Mrs. Mirasol who commissioned architect Luis Dichupa to do some renovations on it.

It was in 1977 when Esperanza Mirasol and husband Pedro Macavinta acquired the rights from the other Mirasol siblings and, with sons Howard and Glenn, made the house the family residence. The second floor was then leased by and housed the offices of the Bureau of Forestry and Office of Civil Defense.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/04/05/macavinta5.jpg

In 1994, the Macavinta Family leased the first floor of the house to the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics. From 1995 to 2002, the house was vacant but it was maintained by the family to keep it in good condition.

In 2003, entrepreneur Louise Jardeleza-Cordova and son Miguel leased and transformed the Macavinta House into Afrique’s Restaurant, its length of stay thereat only time can tell.

Let's spice up thread XIII with a few photos I took these past few days: :)

I think this is the site of the new SM Supermarket at Jaro Town Square. Notice they've painted the place with SM Supermarket's trademark yellow.

I've visited the place lately too ... the Mandaue Foam showrooms is having a rennovation inside, probably giving space to the new SM Supermarket.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/IAMME00/100_6994.jpg
I don't know what building this is that they're constructing beside Residence Hotel, but I like the way the workers are perched up there.

It's a 5-storey building, which is going to ba a hotel or an dorm.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/IAMME00/100_7067.jpg
I don't think this overpass was really necessary (same with most other overpasses in the city). Nevertheless, I think it's the best overpass in the city since they repainted it.

I find them useless too (other than they are good spots for taking pictures of the city) ... The reason why there is traffic is because of the narrow streets, not the pedestrians.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/IAMME00/100_7075.jpg
Gen. Luna St.-very well maintained plants along the entire stretch. Still green even if it has hardly rained these past weeks.

I like Gen. Luna too nowadays, especially after they've done the asphalt overlay ... At least we can refute the generalization that Iloilo is a dirty city.

Tell me if you prefer the pictures smaller, it might take time for some to load them.

Hope to see more pictures from the rest of you also. Congratulations on Iloilo City's thirteenth thread!

and Jon-jon dies dies laughing .. i loved to read lapsus calami part of panay news ... it's written in a way that will really makes you laugh or get angry ... that's the beauty of Iloilo's Freedom of Press.
lapsus Calami is satirical in nature. Of course, who would not laugh about it. There are few postings in Lapsus that really made me laugh hard. It's one of best part of Panay News. And Wecky dies-dies laughing as well .. hehehe

Maybe they think they're competitive. lol. The question is whether Iloilo wants to compare with them. Iloilo has so much to offer, more than what the eyes meet. It's history is written all over. With that alone, Iloilo is indeed a great city.
absolutely agree Jon. It's "undeniable" til the present how Iloilo plays in Philippines' history, culture and politics. It's the fact that all Ilonggos are/will be always proud of. Iloilo is Iloilo. Definitely, a heritage city.

it's a challenge, Mars? Few more months to go na lang gid tuod.

I'm glad Chymera created the blog. Di mapuslan gid naton diri sa sagwa. I guess I should direct Mauro to use the blogs as well. I'll email the site to our friends, too. Mas maayo gid man siya with lots of things we can get from it.

At times I'm posting at night especially night duty ako (may break kami usually 2-3 hours bal-an) .. or I end up going home very early morning and can't get to sleep yet. so post away ako .. he he.

Articles? I'm just using the regular three online papers in Iloilo - Panay News, Sunstar and the News Today- which other posters do as well. There's a massive infos and updates from these three sites. And I'm glad we're kept informed here abroad cos of them.
three of the best online newspapers from Iloilo. I guess there's another one pa but I forgot the website, too. Pero indi gid siya updated from time to time like these three. Btw @Caloy, most of the night breaks here in our hospital last for three hours. Okay man siya ah. I think pare-pareho man lang tanan or depende kung sin-o upod mo sa duty eh.

Besides, ang mga taho nga patay criticise, wala man ina sila naibulig or maibulig gid. It's a waste of time entertaining them.

I'll try nga makahapit ako karon but I'm not so sure to post. It's not my cup of tea wondering around the forum at all. I think I'll better off with one thread only here in Philippine SSC and the rest, I'll post somewhere else. Mas maayo pa. :)

originally, two hours lang gid man ang allowable nga break sa night per staff ... ina iya according sa contract nga pinirmahan ta .. but that doesn't mean nga i-restrain tanan sa 2 hours kung indi man lang masako. Like I said, depende ina sa inyo charge. Personally as a charge, gina-allow ko til 3 hours kung wala man lang buhaton and 2 1/2 hours pag medyo masako-sako gid. I barely do nights lately Caloy but I guess wala man nagbag-o sa patakaran ah .. hehehe.

Tama, back sa topic, Pototan is really doing well .. with the opening of their modern Astrodome, Northern Iloilo towns has a sports center kung diin pwede sila ka liga iya.

I wish to see "both" the city and province working hand in hand towards Iloilo's progress. Let's help maintain the momentum once and for all !

Go DINAGYANG CITY! Go HEART of the PHILIPPINES!
Amen Kirby. Tani ma-sustain gid man naton ang ekonomiya sa ciudad sang Iloilo. Like for example, SM will not build its fourth store kung pigado lang ang purchasing power sang mga Ilonggos. It only means one thing, mas may salig sila sa capacidad sang mga taga-Iloilo. Outside Metro Manila, the most number of SM stores are in Iloilo. Again, for a very small city in terms of land area to sustain such big commercial stores is already a good sign. Btw, when are they closing SM-Jaro Plaza for renovation and expansion? Hopefully, SM Jaro Plaza will be as big as teh present SM-Delgado/City Proper. :)

Good for the town of Dumangas. With the newly-opened Dumangas Trading Center and Fish Processing Plant, Dumangas income will soon improve. Like you, I still go for a good deal of commercial buildings before a certain place will be called a city. Passi City at present is developing their commercial district as well though (in my opinion) still needs further improvement. I hope to see Passi City teeming with buildings and businesses in the future and not ONLY a sugar central city.

BIR maintains positive outlook in meeting tax goals
by T. Villavert

Iloilo City (4 April) -- The Bureau of Internal Revenue is sure fix on its positive outlook in exceeding their P4.8 Billion target tax collections this year, as it kicks-off their 2006 tax campaign.

Regional Director Rodita B. Galanto of BIR Revenue Region 11, Iloilo City said in an interview with the PIA that the business sector here is very cooperative. "We have started our Tax campaign last week in Boracay island in Aklan and in the province's capital town- Kalibo, after which we proceeded to Roxas City, Iloilo City and in Passi City".

"Our deadline for the filing of income tax is April 15 but it is a Saturday, therefore the official deadline for the filing is set on the next working day which is April 17," Galanto said

In the tax drive conducted in Iloilo City, representatives from the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce; Iloilo Business Club; Multi-Sectoral Association and the Association of Certified Public Accountant in Private Practice, have signified their support to the government's tax campaign.

The representative from The Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce-Iloilo City Chapter said that while they promise to urge fellow businessmen to pay their taxes religiously they likewise hope that the government should do its duty to run after tax evaders.

The business sector recognized that taxation is a moral obligation, and with the collected taxes the general welfare of the public will be improved and likewise strengthen the economy.

Regarding the region's tax collection performance in year 2005, Director Galanto cited few sectors which have good shares in their tax collection and these are, among others, the pure business sector with a 1.7 % in the total collection shares of the P43M collection; Witholding tax on wages was P606 M with 24% in total collection share; Flour industry contributes 12% collection share; and corporations, 10 percent.

For the month of April 2006, Galanto said that their tax collection goal is P480 million but they hope to collect P500 Million.

Galanto also explained BIR's logo- one big gear, a multi-colored cord and a small gear. "The gears in synchronized motion, reinforce the idea that the collection of taxes by the BIR ensures the continued existence of the government and the provision of vital services necessary to uplift the quality of life of every Filipino. The multi-colored cord in between the big and small gears, symbolizes the relationship of BIR and the Philippine economy in addressing the country's fiscal condition".

The symbolism that the logo provides is captured by the theme that taxes is the lifeblood of the nation "buwis ko buhay mo," Director Galanto said. (PIA) [top]

With the purchasing power, frugality and conservative spendings, I can assure you of that .. but with damo kuwarta sa Iloilo, I don't know much :) . There's a very huge middle income class across the province and city, and I guess it's more than enough to sustain Iloilo's competitive economy. Even the Family Income Survey shows how Iloilo is faring with other Metro Manila cities being the highest family income amongst cities outside the metropolis. The concern will focus more on how Iloilo can maintain the momentum of progress, making its very own economy as sustainable and resilient as it could be.

by T. Villavert

Iloilo City (4 April) -- The Bureau of Internal Revenue is sure fix on its positive outlook in exceeding their P4.8 Billion target tax collections this year, as it kicks-off their 2006 tax campaign.

seems the target is getting bigger and bigger everyday. I remember few weeks ago when they released the first news about tax collection for the city of Iloilo, the initial target is only 3billion. An increase target of 1.8 billion is quite high considering that 2004 tax collection is barely (more or less ) a billion peso only. I wonder which businesses in the city that are enjoying the tax holidays in the past are due to start paying taxes this 2006.

I'm sure during Defensor's time as a governor gin-budgetan ini nila. Arroyo's Fountain in the heart of the city makes Iloilo more European in style.
