Even though the gov't wont spend for this project, I still am not in favor in reviving the railway system AT THIS TIME.
As I always say, this project is a WANT not a NEED.
That’s why it’s not a necessity and very impractical

I am not against this TPE project. Ang sa akon lang, wrong timing gid sya. Kung sang una nga wala pa financial crises wala nadayon how much more now. This is like an empty can which makes much noise.

My reservation is almost synonymous with opposition though believe it or not Im not against it. Just the timing lang. Yup development is good but it should be balanced or in harmony with the current situation,

Even though I have this BIG reservation about TPE pero if ever maumpisahan ini despite protest and eventually ma operate na, mapila man ako sa mga una magsakay diri  for the experience  pero whatever the outcome maybe wala na sang mahimo.

Alternative transport systems are need when the main system nears it peak.
There is NO need for an alternative transport system. Panay island is not as congested as other places.
Besides the biggest question is will the commuters use this alternative system if ever?

Simple man intindihon ang sabat ko/namon nga we have reservations on this project which is also synonymous with a NO.
with some of these conflicting statements, I don't know how to react. Goodluck to me, I guess.:lol::lol::lol:

On the question of will commuters use the TPE? The answer is "I don't know". Unless the system is in place and running then we will know. For now, both sides could not confirm or affirm the utilisation of TPE. Same thing with expressways. Will the commuters utilise expressways, too, just in case? Maybe? Maybe not?

Time of reviving the railway - When is the right time? How about the Needs and Wants? Who are we discussing here? Personal opinion or the whole Ilonggos and Panaynons? As businessman, will my need and want be the same as yours or everyone else? Then I suggest that before putting the needs and wants, look at the potential users of the system.

Balancing of the harmony of current situation? What does it mean? Upcoming chaos? (tani indi man :lol::lol:) Potential disaster?

There is no concrete plan yet for a highway. as you said that was the alternative given by Drilon and Mr Korina  Yes that’s the way expressways work since it needs maintenance because of the number of users that grow everytime.

Don’t worry about the toll fee. If you want to use it then you have to pay just like the airport fee, you can complain but you cannot do anything

Take for example Metro Manila, expressways were built instead of rehabilitating the railway. It solves the problem much better though temporarily man lang

Again I am not against the rehab but just on the timing since its NOT a priority thing most especially now.

Do you think ang plete sa train would be the same sa mga buses, etc? No. They would be much higher. But ofcourse they have to be competitive so they attract passengers just like what the MRT did. Before if I mnot mistaken, 37 pesos bala ang from North Ave to Taft Avenue so gamay lang nagsakay pero they eventually made it more affordable just to make it work. But that’s in Manila where in it was needed and there was a population to support it.
there was never ever a plan except those mentioned by Drilon and Roxas in passing in the past. I maybe wrong on this one and will try to look for article that the Philippine government or Iloilo government is planning to build a superhighway traversing Panay Island. I hope google will answer me at least.

Pushcart classes help break gang chain
Story Highlights
Efren Peñaflorida was bullied by gangs in high school in the Philippines

Now his Dynamic Teen Company offers an alternative to gangs through education. Since 1997, some 10,000 members have taught more than 1,500 children in slums

CAVITE CITY, Philippines (CNN) -- At 16, Rhandolf Fajardo reflects on his former life as a gang member.

Efren Peñaflorida's Dynamic Teen Company offers Filipino youth an alternative to gangs through education.

1 of 2 "My gang mates were the most influential thing in my life," says Fajardo, who joined a gang when he was in sixth grade. "We were pressured to join."

He's not alone. In the Philippines, teenage membership in urban gangs has surged to an estimated 130,000 in the past 10 years, according to the Preda Foundation, a local human rights charity.

"I thought I'd get stuck in that situation and that my life would never improve," recalls Fajardo. "I would probably be in jail right now, most likely a drug addict -- if I hadn't met Efren."

Efren Peñaflorida, 28, also was bullied by gangs in high school. Today, he offers Filipino youth an alternative to gang membership through education. Vote now for the CNN Hero of the Year

"Gang members are groomed in the slums as early as 9 years old," says Peñaflorida. "They are all victims of poverty."

For the past 12 years, Peñaflorida and his team of teen volunteers have taught basic reading and writing to children living on the streets. Their main tool: A pushcart classroom.

Stocked with books, pens, tables and chairs, his Dynamic Teen Company recreates a school setting in unconventional locations such as the cemetery and municipal trash dump.

Peñaflorida knows firsthand the adversity faced by these children. Born into a poor family, he lived in a shanty near the city dump site. But he says he refused to allow his circumstances to define his future.

"Instead of being discouraged, I promised myself that I would pursue education," he recalls. "I will strive hard; I will do my best."

In high school, Peñaflorida faced a new set of challenges. Gang activity was rampant; they terrorized the student body, vandalized the school and inducted members by forcing them to rape young girls, he says.

"I felt the social discrimination. I was afraid to walk down the street."

Peñaflorida remembers standing up to a gang leader, refusing to join his gang. That confrontation proved fateful. At 16, he and his friends "got the idea to divert teenagers like us to be productive," he says.

He created the Dynamic Teen Company to offer his classmates an outlet to lift up themselves and their community. For Peñaflorida, that meant returning to the slums of his childhood to give kids the education he felt they deserved.

"They need education to be successful in life. It's just giving them what others gave to me," he says.

Today, children ranging from ages 2 to 14 flock to the pushcart every Saturday to learn reading, writing, arithmetic and English from Peñaflorida and his trained teen volunteers. Watch Peñaflorida and his group in action with their push cart classroom »

"Our volunteers serve as an inspiration to other children," he says.

The group also runs a hygiene clinic, where children can get a bath and learn how to brush their teeth.

Since 1997, an estimated 10,000 members have helped teach more than 1,500 children living in the slums. The organization supports its efforts by making and selling crafts and collecting items to recycle. Take a look at the slums where Peñaflorida and his group spend their Saturdays »

Through his group, Peñaflorida has successfully mentored former gang members, addicts and dropouts, seeing potential where others see problems.

"Before, I really didn't care for my life," says Michael Advincula, who started doing drugs when he was 7. "But then Efren patiently dug me from where I was buried. It was Efren who pushed me to get my life together." Watch Advincula describe how he met Peñaflorida in the slums »

Today, Advincula is a senior in high school and one of the group's volunteers.

Peñaflorida hopes to expand the pushcart to other areas, giving more children the chance to learn and stay out of gangs.

"I always tell my volunteers that you are the change that you dream and I am the change that I dream. And collectively we are the change that this world needs to be."

* did they release the feasibility study? i mean the main points of that study. i mean if some of the forumers (not me) here can refute those claims im sure experts can do so
* the train system is NOT THE ONLY AND MAIN SOLUTION for congestion whether it's traffic or development within the city. zoing, proper implementation of of ordinances good road network, etc. again let us not justify this train system with some "lame reasons" (not yours)
* can these bottlenecks be solve with the train system?NO. they wont even meet eye to eye.
* its the policies and the politicians that made the PBO a FLOP. and even with the train system it wont be solved

just want to respond to this post by whyte from the previous thread...

i may not have enough information regarding this proposal... but as little as the proposal's name as the only thing i knew, i still welcome it with wide open arms... if the government can find someone to fund this project, GO! why not?? like mentioned over and over again, this is to be built under a BOT scheme, someone wants to pour out funds for this, GO! and having welcomed this railway system proposal does not mean that we are going to put to shelf the need for a better highway/road system... if you can suggest the "source of fund" to invest in road system instead, then GO! but the point is, the investor is looking into investing in a railway system... if anybody can change their mind to invest in roads instead since it is more urgent, then GO on, influence them to..

what needs to be done here is to have our government look for fund sources for the road network... and not turn down somebody who'd like to fund for something else. it's only that funds for the railways came in first... Panay railways thrived several decades ago, it surely will today...

it's not just and proper to turn down this project just because it "cannot solve" the traffic problem... this is a complement, an alternative, something that would give us more options... would you turn down a condominium developer because what we need right now is cheap mass housing project???

it's like saying to Armani or Versace to put up an ukay-ukay instead, because that's what people need at this time, especially after a calamity... in this case, if you were armani, wouldn't you say "look for somebody else who'd like to put up an ukay-ukay?"

bottomline here is to let them build the railways if they wanted to, even if we dont badly need it right now and let them operate in competitive levels...

The TPE is one hot topic.

BOT= go go go!

As I have mentioned since this will connect the whole Panay this is very good.

Also take note the FACT that for Antique alone this will reduce travel time since wala na bala halos bus line ga travel sa Iloilo-Antique puro Tourist Vans na lang. And the TPE malapos siya sa LEON going to Antique (maagyan man banwa namon bla mo) So mas straight ang iya way kumpara sa current road nga gina-utilize nga prone pa sa landslides.

And then this will connect to Aklan too... easy travel. :)

The convenience factor is huge as well so ma-click gid ini sa masa, since the train can accommodate more passengers as always cheaper gid ang fare.

MIGEDC-JICA constructs Jeepney Bay along Timawa Avenue

The MIGEDC-JICA Project Team is starting with the preparations for the construction of a Jeepney Bay along Timawa Avenue this city, considered as a traffic bottleneck.

By virtue of Ordinance No. 2009-326, the Project Team gains headway in its previously designed Social Experiment on easing traffic flow in the area.

In a press release, Project consultant Prof. Lorenza Padojinog said the site is immediately next to an intersection of Infante-Delgado-Timawa, where public utility vehicles and motorists impede the smooth flow and inflow of traffic.

Padojinog also said that making the situation worse is the prevalence of illegal parking along the sidewalk of the Iloilo Doctors’ Hospitals from the corner of Timawa Avenue up to approximately 75 meters stretch of shoulder of the road.

Situated on the area are UPV campus, along Infante, the Iloilo Doctors’ Hospital both on Infante and right side of Timawa Avenue and the Iloilo Doctors’ College on the left of Timawa Avenue.

Padojinog said the construction of the Jeepney Bay will ease the loading and unloading of passengers and will allow other motorists to drive through without obstruction.

The bay will measure 40 meters long and about 2.25 meters wide, freed from all parking.

Traffic Surveys by the subcontractors are undertaken October 7 and 8, while interview surveys on October 8-10, after which construction begins until October 30.

The Team said that a traffic survey of vehicular movements will be done right after the bay is completed, and when it would improve traffic situation, the bay will be maintained and replicated in other areas of the city where these are needed.

The project is among those funded by JICA, under the Social Experiment Scheme of the MIGEDC-JICA partnership. (MIGEDC-JICA/PIA6/ESS)

The Iloilo City Government is almost sure to surpass the 100 percent revenue target in the last three–month period after hitting a high 95 percent in collections in the first nine months of 2009.

The City Treasurer’s Office already collected P912,329,254 from January-September and very close to achieve this year’s P958,494,995 city’s budget estimate.

Business and other taxes topped the collections at P254,236,528 or 94 percent of the P269,360,000 target for the whole year.

Real property taxes collections amounted to P155,584,435 or 95 percent of P163,499,717 target for this year.

Non-tax revenue or various fees collected reached P86,596,676 or a whooping 110 percent breaching the target of P78,519,000.

The city-run public markets and slaughterhouse collected P37,262,143 or 108 percent exceeding of the target of P34,610,000.

The City Hall also received P378,649,471 or 92 percent from the initial releases of its P412,506,278 Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) share this year.

Mayor Jerry P. Treñas credited the diligent efforts of the City Treasurer’s and Assessor’s offices and the cooperation of taxpayers for the successful collection. (PIO)

Raul Sr. willing to ‘sell soul’ to get Senate nod on HB 4256

By Maricar M. Calubiran

Chief presidential legal counsel Raul Gonzalez Sr. warns Sen. Noynoy Aquino that he will campaign against him following the latter’s non-endorsement of the bill that would divide Iloilo City into two districts.

Meanwhile, Gonzalez said that he is willing to support the candidacy of Senator Mar Roxas for vice president even if they are not partymates if he helps push for the redistricting of Iloilo City.

Gonzalez, in an interview over Bombo Radyo’s Zona Libre, said that he is willing to sell his soul to the senators just to make the bill pass the Senate.

Aquino, chair of the senate committee on local government, earlier expressed his opposition on the proposed bill citing the city’s lack of population necessary in the creation of another congressional district for Iloilo City. Based on the 2007 NSO census, Iloilo City has only a population of 418,710. The Local Government Code states it needs 250,000 population to create another congressional district.

A year and half has passed and nothing concrete was decided on House Bill 4256. “Noynoy will not get any support from me,” Gonzalez said adding. “I don’t owe anything from him.” Gonzalez reiterated it is Noynoy who indebted him because of his father. “I was the one who defended Ninoy (Aquino) from the Military Commission. A Supreme Court decision was rendered in favor of Ninoy,” Gonzalez said.

The chief presidential counsel said it is very frustrating on their part since the committee on local government chaired by Aquino approved several bills creating additional districts in Camarines Sur, and Iligan City among others.

Gonzalez believes Aquino’s decision was influenced by Senator Franklin Drilon. He said he overheard Drilon saying that the proposed bill will not make it before the Senate. Drilon was then at the Hotel Del Rio. He strongly believes the Ilonggo senator has something to do with Aquino’s decision rejecting the proposed bill.

In his visit to Iloilo City last week, Drilon said he was being pinpointed by Gonzalez as behind the setback in HB 4256 since Gonzalez has no one to pinpoint.

Drilon stressed that the city lacks the requirement for the creation of another congressional district particularly on the number of population. There are people who really want to disregard the law.

They survived because they are the one of the CHEAPEST way of transportation to/from these places. In fact they almost have the monopoly here in Panay so why can’t they survive?

TPE = MRT/LRT is not right/correct so “reasonings” covered within will also not be considered right. Right? ;)

If they could afford it on a daily/weekly basis. Why not? You chose what’s good for you and what you can afford. Don’t make others doteh same

Even though the gov't wont spend for this project, I still am not in favor in reviving the railway system AT THIS TIME.
As I always say, this project is a WANT not a NEED.
That’s why it’s not a necessity and very impractical

The scope and the money spent is really BIG and the impact is questionable.

We need to look at YESTERDAY to make TODAY work for TOMORROW.
That is we need to learn how panay railways before came into existence and why it eventually died down. True ang sang una nga line is only from Iloilo City to Roxas City but it has served its main purpose – complement the booming sugar industry. Minor lang gid ang passenger transport that’s why when the sugar industry collapse, its being a passenger transport train did not sustain thus it’s demise.

(PIO)

^^
:applause:

Good job for the city government... Tani ang city cola pataasan man next year kay na attain ang target... Any update for the city hall?

:cheers::cheers: good fiscal performance means a window of opportunity for investors

:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:
This is the performance!!! With another three months to go, Iloilo City will definitely beat the target collection with extra more. I think the city's treasury department is keeping on eye on this one considering that this could be a challenge on their part -- with brilliant results for the first 9 months, they're more enthusiastic and driven to hit the target as soon as possible. Remember, December is the month for biggest collection esepcially for VATs coming from sales, etc. If they can produce the remaining 50 million this October or November, the annual target collection will definitely be bigger as expected. We'll see. For the past two months they are posting the collections here in the web. Goodluck to Iloilo City Treasurer's Office.

Raul Sr. willing to ‘sell soul’ to get Senate nod on HB 4256

^^

How desperate someone could be to sell his soul? This actually turned me off even more for the Gonzales'. It's a sad, sad case but I don't feel any compassion for his move. If he can personally sell his soul for someone, he can also do it for the city when he will be in post. Right now, a big NO NO to Raul Gonzales Sr and Jr. What a shame indeed.:bash::bash:

Medyo bias lang ang survey galing. Panay News is know to be the critic of Raul Gonzales.

It is for his family interest... Very obvious gid ya... Wala siya nahuya... Ginapananaawan niya na nga kung indi madayun ining bill, after the election is the downfall of his family... Especially nga kung magdaug pa gid si noynoy...
Yes, they're losing to almost all surveys. I don't know what other tactics Raul will employ to get the votes of Iloilo City residents. I think it's high time for them to relocate somewhere else. I'm sad for the man but I believe it will be a worst scenario if they ever win as mayor and congressman of the city. We've done and gone so far para gub-on lang sang mga Gonzales. It's time for the city residents to hit back and show our full support to those with a lot of passion in making Iloilo City a premiere city by 2015.

MAYOR CADIO, MAN TO BEAT
VARIOUS surveys conducted in the 2nd District of Iloilo show that Mayor Cadio Gorriceta enjoys the highest popularity rating, raging from 60.6 to 67 percent.
Whereas, Cong. Inday Judy Syjuco got 3.3 percent in Pavia and 3.8 percent in Lucena.
Provincial Administrator Boy Mejorada got 0.6 percent in the entire 2nd District, according to UP Random Access’ survey.
Mayor Cadio has the highest credibility rating and if elections were held today, nobody can hold a candle to him.
His fine performance as mayor of Pavia loudly speaks for itself.
Say mo, Mayor Mulong?

Syjuco, Gonzales... Naling-an na ko sang mga ngalan nila sa pulitika... It's time for politicians with desire to lead Iloilo on the top to shine in this coming election... Let's all be vigilant and intelligent in choosing the right leaders to lead us since 2010 is a critical year for Ilonggo since electricity in the province and the city will be stabilized next year due to several energy projects... I'm sure more projects will pour after the election...

Laking Tondo Dugong Ilonggo (http://dabystander.blogspot.com/2009/09/2010-election-villar-tops-ssc-iloilo.html)

Senator Manny “Sipag at Tiyaga” Villar – the frontrunner in the August 2009 Pulse Asia Survey (http://simpliving.blogspot.com/2009/08/2010-election-manny-villar-surges-in.html) for the May 2010 presidential election – also topped an unofficial poll conducted among members of SkyscraperCity-Iloilo (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=960370) (SSC-Iloilo), the Ilonggo community within SkyscraperCity (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/), an online forum of skyscrapers, urban planning and infrastructure development enthusiasts.

The initial result of the survey showed Villar as the runaway winner with 62% of the votes, Defense Secretary Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro at number two with 22%, Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III at number three with 14% and convicted plunderer former president Joseph “Erap” Estrada at the bottom with 2% of the total votes cast to date. The survey was initiated on September 17 and is still on-going, but after seven days, the trend is unlikely to change significantly, considering that the majority of SSC-Iloilo membership has voted already.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_unmxF2MUe90/SroVLvvmhgI/AAAAAAAAB1g/TCrgOxvauK0/s400/snap129.jpg
The lineup for the survey was determined by considering the more serious and the already declared candidates – Villar for the Nacionalista Party (NP), Teodoro for the Lakas-Kampi-CMD (also known as the Partido Lakas-Kampi or PaLaKa), Aquino for the Liberal Party (LP) and Estrada for whatever his party is. Villar and Estrada were the top two candidates in the latest Pulse Asia survey, while Aquino replaced MAR Roxas (http://simpliving.blogspot.com/2009/09/desperate-mar-accedes-to-reluctant.html) as the LP’s standard bearer, just recently. Teodoro is the administration candidate, and thus, should benefit from its formidable nationwide machinery, while the other consistent performer in the surveys, Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero, was not considered because it is widely believed that he would eventually slide down to the vice presidency.

Contrary to a certain survey conducted by UP Diliman frat men (allegedly Escudero’s fraternity brothers), wherein Chiz was the topnotcher, this survey by SSC-Iloilo was not by any means intended to give a spin to Villar’s candidacy. The survey was just intended to approximately feel the pulse of a certain segment of Iloilo’s populace. SSC-Iloilo represents the internet-savvy young people – yuppies, OFWs, BPO workers, entrepreneurs and students – of Iloilo in particular and Panay Island in general.

yes! if only our leaders are visionary enough. personally, this is what i'm batting for more than the TPE although, ok man kun madayun ang TPE. but imo, a bridge that connects iloilo and guimaras will have more trickle down effects in terms of spawning new developments. and especially in this global recession, pump priming the local economy through big impact and necessary public works will shield the local economy further from the effects of global economic lean times.

a bridge that connects the two islands will somewhat leapfrog guimaras in terms of the rate of its development. for one, the potentials for tourism will be greatly realized.

SM City expands when it reaches it has an occupancy rate of 98%. I checked around a year ago, although a rough estimate, that the occupancy rate was 95%. This means SM is booming. And to think this is a 100,000 sqm mall.

SM City undergoing an expansion due to a high occupancy rate, and to think it's a two story building that they're expanding into.

SM Delgado underwent expansion last 2006, and it is still into a 100% occupancy rate.

SM Jaro underwent renovation last 2007.

SM Quintin, relatively new, is also booming.

SM Hypermarket or the current Makro is also a great expansion for SM.

Plus SM City also has a 3D cinema and free wifi. That says a lot.

Pardon, haven't been happy for Iloilo in a long time.

If Ilonggos love the market, then it will stand strong amidst the dark clouds... Amo na gani ang mahambal ko sa Starbucks issue... Once mapamahal na na sa Ilonggo, it will survive the market...

amo gid ina ang advertisement. Now, whoever wins in the election, there's always the tendency for them to become corrupt simply because of these reasons, temptation and opportunity. While in power of course, he will protect his business interests and amass more wealth if possible. Bear in mind that in every project in the country may share gid ina sila pirme. ano na ang SM City Garden? mall man ina?!

The presence of SM in Iloilo market shows how resilient Iloilo economy is... It's almost 30 years in Iloilo... Wala kaagi nagsira and still it is growing... If Ilonggos love the market, then it will stand strong amidst the dark clouds... Amo na gani ang mahambal ko sa Starbucks issue... Once mapamahal na na sa Ilonggo, it will survive the market...

By the way kmusta ang reception sang 3D sa mga Ilonggo? Hope it's flourishing...
Pinadal-an ko kwarta sis ko para watch sila G-Force upod sang mga hinablos ko. Nami kuno! It was their first experience to see a movie in 3D. I told them few months ago to watch it kay nalantaw ko ini sa 3D sang July, nami gid man pati ang story, but she told me that wala 3D dira sa Iloilo. Pero last Sunday sang malantaw na sila, kibot sya nga P200.50 ang bayad kay gali 3D...pero ok lang kay worth it man.

DPWH urged to resolve
Dungon Creek dredging
By Lydia C. Pendon

ILOILO CITY Mayor Jerry P. Treñas has called on the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPHW) to immediately resolve the issue on dredging of the Dungon Creek here and four other creeks that were identified to impede the flow of water.

Treñas said that aside from the Dungon Creek, the other waterways that need immediate attention are the Calajunan Creek in Manduriao district, Ingore Creek in La Paz, Buntatala Creek in Jaro and the Iloilo River.

These are the city’s main waterways and dredging of these creeks and the river will greatly solve the perennial flashfloods in the city environs.

On the other hand, the multi-billion Iloilo flood control project is set to be operational by December this year but will be fully completed by April 2010.

The city mayor said a budget of P50 million was initially released by the national government for the dredging of Dungon Creek but the project was stalled when environmentalists criticized the government for cutting down age-old bakawan mangrove trees at the creek.

Treñas said the DENR should immediately settle the issue so that the DPWH can proceed with the dredging works.

City set to launch Dinagyang 2010
By DAVID ISRAEL SINAY

ILOILO City – The Iloilo City Tourism and Development Office is launching the Dinagyang Festival 2010 at the Freedom Grandstand this Friday.

A four-day national launching is also scheduled on December 11, 12, 13, 14, 2009 at the Tiendesitas, Greenhills and the Mall of Asia in Metro Manila.

The Pamukaw, which rouses the Dinagyang Festival fever, is scheduled on December 18.

The highlight of the Dinagyang Festival 2010 is on January 24, 2010 when several competing ati-atihan tribes will perform.

There will also be the Miss Dinagyang Festival beauty pageant.

Dinagyang was recently proclaimed a “hall of famer” for bagging the title “Best Tourism Event in the Philippines” for the past three years.

It is also the first festival in the world to get the support of the United Nations for the promotion of the Millennium Development Goals, and cited by the Asian Development Bank as “best practice” on government-private sector cooperation.

Dinagyang is a religious and cultural festival held both to honor the Santo Niño and to celebrate the arrival on Panay of Malay settlers, and the subsequent selling of the island to them by the Atis./PN:cheers::cheers::cheers:

Another power supply deal for Iloilo.

First Gen signs power supply deal for Iloilo

Tuesday, 13 October 2009 00:00

Lopez-controlled First Gen Corp. has started talks with Iloilo’s power utility to help secure the province’s electricity supply.
Under a memorandum of agreement inked by First Gen’s unit First Gen Energy Solutions Inc. (FGES) and Iloilo Electric Cooperative I (ILECO I), the power firm will supply electricity from geothermal sources to its franchise area in the Western Visayas region.

FGES is a licensed electricity aggregator and retail energy supplier, which allows it to sell and market electricity to end-users like Ileco I. It also offers smart power monitoring system that helps customers reduce their operating costs through energy efficiency.

The electricity FGES is offering to ILECO I would be provided by Energy Development Corp. (EDC), the country’s largest and the world’s second-biggest producer of geothermal energy. First Gen owns a majority stake in EDC.

Unlike other fossil fuels such as coal and oil, which experts believe are responsible for climate change, geothermal energy harnesses steam from underground reservoirs to generate virtually carbon-free power.
After using steam to generate electricity, the water is injected back into the ground, making geothermal energy a renewable resource.

Although the two parties have yet to complete their talks, ILECO I officials have underscored the need to achieve the twin goals of keeping competitive electricity rates and protecting Panay’s environment.
“The people of Panay are fortunate to have access to geothermal energy, which offers everyone a win-win solution,” Salvador Cabaluna 3rd, ILECO I board president, said.

Panay currently has the most expensive power cost and the lowest supply in the Philippines because it has no indigenous power supply sources.

The Department of Energy earlier reported that Panay island—including Boracay Island—had been experiencing 13 to 23 days of power outages because of the lack of supply.

I am sure they will not be able to dredge Dungon Creek if they stick to the rules. The creek is lined with a lot of mangroves and it is ILLEGAL to cut mangroves. The most they can do is deepen Dungon Creek but this is very difficult to do without cutting the mangroves.

An excerpt from RA 7161.

Section 4. Section 71 of Presidential Decree No. 705, as amended, (formerly Section 233 of the National Internal Revenue Code) is hereby amended to read as follows:"Sec. 71. Charges on Firewood, Branches and Other Recoverable Wood Wastes of Timber. - Except for all mangrove species whose cutting shall be banned, there shall be collected forest charges on each cubic meter of firewood cut in forestland, branches and other recoverable wood wastes of timber, such as timber ends, tops and stumps, when used as raw materials for the manufacture of finished products, Ten pesos (P10.00).

One thing that I like about this is competition. Iloilo City may be monopolized by PECO but if we look it in a metro-wide perspective, there is a potential of competition between PECO and ILECO since most MIDC towns are under the latter which is good.

In other words, I would prefer competition to be metro wide. Market Iloilo's urban core not only in Iloilo City but the MIDC towns as well. They have cheaper power, therefore it might provoke PECO to also cheapen their power despite the fact that they are still using fossil fuel as an energy source.

And its a good thing that the Lopezes are keeping their word about the energy supply in Iloilo.

^^ Or is it because there is rumor of MERALCO being sold to other investors as according to DBP-Daiwa? They are increasing their stake at their FirstGen-EDC ventures and would like to prioritize in producing energy instead of distributing it. Hmmmmm.....:naughty:

And PECO-PPC-Lopez...although Lopezes were the ones who pursued the diesel power plants back then, don't you think they may have some "secret" agreements between the Cacho-led company (which part of it was their own?)

But in anyway, it's a good thing that they are pursuing renewable energy at the same time. But, the wind power plant in Guimaras, is it really 200MW or 20MW? Don't you think it's too drastic to produce 200MW in one construction/sitting?

I guess that might be for long-term goal or probably the potential energy supply of Guimaras wind. It'll be lovely to see those wind turbines in Guimaras fill up it's skyline. But I guess, what is feasible is the 20MW++ for wind power.

The more, the better. Because time is really running out. I remember one environmental NGO chief here in the Philippines saying, "we have so many laws, so many potentials, so many plans, but when it comes to implementation, I guess that is one of the major Filipino weaknesses in politics."

Guimaras to have sufficient power supply by 2012

The province of Guimaras is assured of sufficient power supply by 2012 with the expected commissioning of the initial eight-megawatt wind farm by the Philippine Investment Management Inc. (Phinma) Group of Companies.

Governor Felipe Hilan Nava said the investor will already start with the foundation of the windmill next year and if there are no hitches then the power plant will be operational by 2012. Each turbine is more than 80 meters high and weighs more than 100 tons, he noted.

Nava said Guimarasnons are very supportive of the project, knowing that they can also contribute to the reduction of global warming. “They are very lukewarm in endorsing other interested power investors because they are also very sensitive to the environment.

We are really endorsing renewable (energy),” he said. The entire project is expected to generate 200 megawatts but initially the target is 54 megawatts that will kick off with the commissioning of the eight megawatts at M. Chavez in San Lorenzo town.

The second phase will be constructed in Barangay Sabang, Sibunag while the third phase will be in Barangay Salvacion, Nueva Valencia. Nava said the commissioning is very timely because the power demand for the province is expected to increase in the next few years.

At present, the demand is about 5-6 megawatts and the existing bunker plant can produce about 2.9 megawatts. “They will start with 8-10 megawatts, more than enough to supply Guimaras, Nava said.

Editorial: Not ready for the presidency
The Daily Tribune
October 8, 2009

Going by the forum meeting between a group of local executives four presidential aspirants, the answers Sen. Noynoy Aquino, the Liberal Party presidential bet, gave the local executives showed clearly that he just isn’t ready for the presidency, and worse, he does not appear to have any understanding of how government works or shouldn’t work, under a system of laws.

The answers he gave to the questions raised by the local executives were much too vague and indirect, offering nothing substantive, probably because he has no position on these issues in the first place or he is plain clueless.

He kept on going about democracy and people power in virtually every answer he gave, two issues which are not the issues at this time, but as he was still evidently following the campaign spiels taken by his mother, former President Corazon Aquino, including the "walang alam" bit which is better than having an experienced one that is corrupt, which criticism had been leveled against his mother, he continues to tread this path, which will hardly resonate with the voters, just as it did not resonate with the local officials present in that forum.

But it has been noted for sometime that Noynoy Aquino, even in media interviews, is always vague and never directly answers the questions and at times, even his answers are off tangent. Mar Roxas has also been noted to "save" the day for Noynoy by explaining what Noynoy meant to say.

Another thing going against Noynoy, no matter what his yellow supporters say, is that he can’t seem to make any decision unless and until he gets his four sisters — and their husbands apparently — to agree on a decision to be made.

Even when he holds "unity meetings" with other opposition bets, the sisters and their husbands are always present. Can’t he make a decision on his own and make a firm stand on issues? Is his presidency going to be a presidency of five Aquino siblings?

What is, however, surprising is the ignorance of Aquino in local government issues, which should have been right up his alley, given the fact that Aquino is the chairman of the local governments committee.

It was apparent that Noynoy, as chairman, never studied his lessons, nor for that matter, has he even called some kind of hearing — even now, with the disaster and the unpreparedness of Malacañang and the local government officials in addressing the needs of the typhoon victims, today being questioned by the public.

All Aquino said, by way of answers to the questions posed by the local governments, was that this and that have to studied first.

A bigger mistake he made was telling the local government executives that he wouldn’t, as president, be giving funds to the local government units that do not perform. But hey, such funds, meaning the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) fund is a must, as the law says the local government executives get 40 percent as IRA. To withhold it is unlawful and not to provide any funds to a non-performing lgu even when it is needed is unconscionable.

Outside of that, no specifics were given, no concrete examples were given on how he, as well as the other presidential bets, will go about their presidency in reforming the system, mainly because they really have no idea on how to bring about reforms, given their varied backgrounds.

If truth be told, none of the presidential aspirants invited to speak at the forum were impressive in their answers, but as all politicians do, they all mouthed motherhood statements, and from the faces of the audience, it was evident that the local officials were hardly impressed by the four presidentiables, with some looking much too bored.

As one former local executive put it, "If all that the candidate can tell us is that he will study it, we’ve been through that already. He has to say and do something good for us and the country."

Noynoy just lost a golden opportunity for him to prove to the nation that he is prepared for the presidency.

He just proved that he isn’t and won’t ever be.:)

Guimaras to have sufficient power supply by 2012

:okay:
That's good news indeed.

Well, still I'm hoping that the NATIONAL government would promote renewable energy source or fully support it in at any cause. It's high time I guess to tap in and don't overlook at some areas of concern regarding electricity. Remember that Philippines still holds one of the most expensive electricity rates in the region. So I guess, we are not to think locally here alone but nationally as well. Because one's locality affects the whole nation in a context.

But the reality here is that, Philippines is only producing 1% of the carbon emissions. That may sound insignificant but its always one step at a time. But really, I hope Copenhagen would bring in something...but its difficult to convince the empires themselves.

I guess, from Frank to Pepeng, its already a legacy...add to up that, Reming and the Ormoc disaster. I guess we don't have to be complacent enough as it happens....not in select areas, because the Philippines is always in danger of natural calamities, whether we like it or not. ;)

Euan Paulo C. Añonuevo

http://www.manilatimes.net/index.php/business/3836-first-gen-signs-power-supply-deal-for-iloilo#

And its a good thing that the Lopezes are keeping their word about the energy supply in Iloilo.

very nice development. Seems that Lopezes are flexing its muscles to help Iloilo City and Iloilo Province achieve the power demand of the future. The more MW they can supply for Iloilo, the better. We need more power in Iloilo - with upcoming power plants, a brown-out free Iloilo will emerge.:banana::banana:

I guess we don't have to be complacent enough as it happens....not in select areas, because the Philippines is always in danger of natural calamities, whether we like it or not. ;)

^^ Because that is in-demand. Why lose the opportunity if it is really in demand as of the moment...then, more profits for the capitalistas, energy benefits for the consumer and if we really turn green, benefit for the environment.

Very good development for Guimaras Island. I hope they can sell some of its generated powers to Iloilo City.

I don't think the 200MW will be coming all from Guimaras. The island must be flying in the air if this thing happens.:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: As far as my understanding is concerned, daw mga 5-8MW lang ang umpisahan nila sa Guimaras with the maximum capacity to 20MW ?when pa ini. So expect a 5-8MW by 2012 for Guimaras ! A really nice push for this beautiful island-province.

Ilongga judge hailed for judicial excellence
BY NIÑA JANE A. SOURIBIO

ILOILO City – The Supreme Court, in collaboration with the Society for Judicial Excellence (SJE), recently awarded the Don Antonio P. Madrigal Award for Outstanding Municipal Trial Court in Cities (MTCC) to Judge Yvette Marie Dedel-Go, presiding judge of MTCC Branch 4 at the Chief Justice Ramon Avanceña Hall of Justice.

Go is the only judge from Western Visayas included in the list of this year’s judicial excellence awardees.

From a caseload of almost 3,000, she was able to reduce it to less than 200 cases.

“I’m honored to be a recipient of the award. However, this doesn’t mean that I will rest on my laurels, so to speak. This only means that I must strive even harder and do even better. The job of a judge calls for dedication and genuine commitment,” Go said.

Judicial excellence awards are given to outstanding judges and officers of the Philippine courts as a tribute to their integrity, dedication and commitment to public service and the rule of law.

The SJE, through its Board of Trustees, administers the annual search for outstanding judges and clerks of court. The final selection of awardees is undertaken by the Board of Judges.

Judge Go, whose parents were from the town of Dumangas, finished her elementary and secondary education as a valedictorian at the St. Michael’s College in Iligan City.

Among the recognitions she received during her high school days were the Gerry Roxas Leadership Award and the Insular Life Gold Eagle Award.

She was admitted as university scholar and took up Bachelor of Arts major in English and Political Science at the Mindanao State University (MSU) in Marawi City and the MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology in Iligan City.

She finished her degree cum laude at the University of San Agustin here.

To share her knowledge of the laws, she also teaches at the College of Law of the University of Iloilo and the University of San Agustin./PN

‘Treñas should continue serving city’
By DAVID ISRAEL SINAY

ILOILO City – Vice Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog is confident that Mayor Jerry Treñas will run for congressman of this city.

“We would like Mayor Treñas to continue serving the people of this city,” Mabilog said, noting the people’s clamor for him to run for congressman.

Mabilog is running for city mayor.

Treñas is expected to make public his decision on October 31, 2009.

The mayor is on a foreign trip again. He is attending a seminar in Germany.

Citing surveys, Mabilog said a Treñas-Mabilog tandem is the “team to beat.”

Mabilog also said the Liberal Party has offered him to become their official candidate for mayor in this city. But he said he will wait for the decision of Treñas before deciding on the offer.

Should Treñas opt not to run for congressman with him, Mabilog said he has an “alternative candidate.”

He, however, refused to identify this alternative candidate./PN

The hotel-like Cosmopolitan-Somo Memorial Homes

Every one who has visited the Cosmopolitan-Somo Memorial Chapel in Delgado Street, Iloilo will definitely say that it’s like a hotel. In fact, one media colleague, during the press launching there, said that it’s a great place to hang out. The interiors are very modern and relaxing to the eyes.

It used to be Somo Memorial Homes. But after the Somo family entered into a partnership with the Cosmopolitan Memorial Chapel, the building was renovated and made even better.

Somo had been serving the community for 65 years. Cosmopolitan Memorial Chapel had been doing the same in Cebu for 59 years. This venture presents Ilonggos with a new outlook on memorial services —- celebrating life and honoring death.

Two veteran memorial services experts merged to give Ilonggos a new meaning in honoring their departed. They are Cosmopolitan Memorial Chapel and Somo Memorial Homes.

Cosmopolitan Memorial Chapel, Inc. was founded by the late Renato Dychangco Sr. in 1950. They started with horse-drawn carriages and now, they use Cadillac and Lincoln hearses.

In the last 59 years, CMCI had grown to be the country’s finest family brand because of their service, dedication and quality care.

Meanwhile, Somo Memorial Homes Inc is a pioneer in the funeral service industry in the last 65 years. It was founded by the late Teodorico S. Somo in the late 1940’s. It became a family corporation and managed by the children of Teodorico Somo.

Last Sept. 25, 2009, the fruit of this partnership was inaugurated, the Cosmopolitan-Somo Memorial Homes.

Ilonggos will definitely witness what CMCI calls the “Cosmopolitan Touch” through its professionalism, skill and innovative training and development for the client.

The first floor is really classy, as it caters to the A market. It has the Diamond Chapel which can seat 50 to 60 people. It has a bedroom, kitchen and dining facilities. Recognizing that family members have their own set of friends, there are grouped lounges where they can sit and snuggle comfortably. Also on the first floor are the business offices and two showrooms, one for the A and B market and the other, for the C and D market.

On the second floor, there are eight chapels – Onyx, Citrine, Opal 1 and 2, Jade 1 and 2 and Moonstone.

The third floor is allotted for the C and D markets. It also houses the coffee shop, open area, dining and basic stores.

The Care Center is the area where embalming is done. “We train our people to handle the body with utmost care. We feel that the body is sacred thus we handle it as we would a living body,” said Oly Dychangco, Jr., CEO and president. He added that a lounge is provided where the family can view the body while it is being injected. “We use the United States’ technology of soft embalming wherein the person looks as if he or she is just sleeping. We have well-trained embalmers and staff who can beautify the dead,” he said.

“The Ilonggos deserve to have these facilities, which are decent and modern. We will cater to all walks of life,” Dychangco said.

Industry

Dychangco said that with CMCI, the funeral industry in the country had been upgraded. “This is no longer a scary industry and we hope to do such in Iloilo. Even for the embalmers. People used to view the job of an embalmers as a low-grade, but right now, I have seen the difference of how they did it in the United States. The funeral directors and embalmers there are respected,” he said.

Sarah Dychangco-Gothong, director of CSMHI and president of Translife Care, Inc., said that embalming is a lucrative job in the United States. “We can help Filipinos to have better jobs through the Pacific Center for Advance Study in Lahug, Cebu. The school offers seminars on embalming and effective funeral counseling, among others.” She added that the Department of Health, in fact, wans to professionalize the industry and soon a two-year program would be offered. Dychangco-Gothing is a licensed embalmer.

Cosmopolitan-Somo Memorial Homes, Inc. is located at #24 Delgado Street, Iloilo City and can be reached through phone numbers (033) 3374007 and 3364535 (telefax).

Barangay folks endorse operation of poker room at Boardwalk
By Maricar M. Calubiran

Poker room finally got its approval to operate in the city with the favorable endorsement from the barangay council of Brgy. San Rafael, Mandurriao district.

San Rafael Barangay Captain Azucena Tabuyoc confirmed the barangay council has passed a resolution favorably endorsing the proposal of Vanskaps to operate a poker room at Boardwalk leisure and entertainment complex which is part of their barangay. Their resolution dated August 5, 2009 will be forwarded to the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

The barangay resolution gives the proponent a bigger chance in securing a business permit and locational clearance from the city government.

The resolution was passed before the October 7, 2009 barangay hearing set by the Iloilo City Zoning Board of Appeals and Adjustment (ICZBAA). The hearing was in relation to the application of the Vanskaps for a locational clearance.

Vanskaps is a licensed gaming firm of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor). It is based in Lahug, Cebu. The Boardwalk became the alternative site for the poker game after violations were imminent in the first site eyed by Vanskaps in operating a poker room. The first site of the proposed poker game is the Residence Hotel along General Luna, City Proper. The hotel is near the University of San Agustin. There is a city ordinance which bans the establishment of gambling within the 200 meters distance from school or church.

Tabuyoc said the approval was made even before they reached the three hearings requirement set by law. The resolution was accompanied by signatures of residents confirming their concurrence to the poker room operation.

The resolution was furnished to the committee on games, amusement and professional sports chaired by Councilor Lyndon Acap. He, earlier expressed approval on the operation of a poker room provided the proponent complies with the requirements based on the city ordinance.

Tabuyoc said there were no objections on the part of the residents when the proponent presented the poker room. The lot owner and nearby establishments have also endorsed the poker room. The poker room will be constructed near the Red Paprika restaurant.

The operation of a poker room will generate more revenue to the barangay through the business permit fees. Its operation will not affect the residents since it requires much money to play poker games, said Tabuyoc.

It was also learned that one of the considerations for the approval of the barangay to the poker room is for the proponent to place in their priority list the hiring of qualified residents of San Rafael. It will help in the employment of our residents, said Tabuyoc.

To recall, the Catholic church expressed strong opposition to the operation of the poker room, as in other numbers game, since it promotes gambling that destroys the moral fiber of the people.

Bolilao residents start moving to relocation site
By Maricar M. Calubiran

Residents living along the Bolilao Creek in Mandurriao district have learned to appreciate the offer of the city government for a relocation site at the San Isidro, Jaro as 25 families already transferred to the site.

Bolilao Barangay Captain Nenita Joson said 25 families moved to the relocation site and seven others are set to transfer as soon as the weather condition improves. Families from Sitio Sooc and Dike 2 already transferred to the relocation site a few months back.

Joson added the residents who transferred to the San Isidro relocation site either built their own houses or were given housing units through the Gawad Kalinga donations.

She said, earlier eight of the affected families questioned the offer made by the city government. They refused to apply for a slot at the Iloilo City Urban Poor Affairs Office (ICUPAO). Now, they want to avail of the offer.

Joson said they are assisting the families who want to transfer to the relocation site. They have seen how the city government addresses the needs of the relocatees at the relocation site.

Barangay Bolilao is only one of the barangays affected by the impending P50 million Dungon Creek dredging. Hundreds of families living along the creeks are affected by the dredging. Most of the affected residents refused to vacate the creek stressing they do not have livelihood at the relocation site.

It is in Bolilao where the dredging started but was stopped after the contractor of the dredging project destroyed the mangroves along the riverbank of Sitio Sooc. The dredging operation has yet to resume after more than two weeks since it first started.

Guimaras to host Sining Pambansa 2010

Preservation and development of culture and arts is one of the thrusts of the Provincial Government of Guimaras. In addition, the Province continuously aims to develop and promote Filipino cultural and artistic traditions through diverse culture and arts programs.

Thus, the said province under the leadership of Gov. Felipe Hilan A. Nava is deeply interested in hosting the 3rd Sining Pambansa Festival on February 2010. The said festival offers activities showing different forms of cultural and artistic traditions that will intensely benefit tourism as well as promote awareness and love of the community for culture and the arts.

The Sining Pambansa Festival has seven components-dance, music, creative writing, drama, theater and visual arts. One of the components of the said festival is visual arts through Paper Clay Art Competition with the theme “Husay ng Batang Pinoy 2009” through the JNBM Amazing Arts Phils, Inc. and Have a Heart for the Child Foundation in cooperation with the Department of Education through the Culture and Arts Office and Gov. Nava of Guimaras.

The said competition aims to produce World Class Paper Clay Art masterpieces that will showcase to the world the talents and skills of the young Filipino artists.

In addition, it also targets to set a World Record as the Largest Paper Clay Art Competition (200,000 masterpieces) participated by the young Filipino artists. The Guinness World Records Ltd. shall be invited to authenticate and certify the record attempt under this category.

Furthermore, the Culture and Arts Office of Department of Education plans to have this said competition done yearly.

This year’s theme is “Ako para sa Kalikasan”, since the competition aims to promote environmental awareness among children and youth on what they can do to help in the protection and conservation of our natural environment for the benefit of present and future generations.

Nonoy Dagol Salcedo “dies-dies” laughing!

from Panay News

^^^^^^ daw si Cadio Gorriceta gid man ang mangin congressman sang segundo distrito.:banana: Ano ayhan plataforma ni Cadio?

i think Gorriceta only has Pavia, Sta.Barbara and New Lucena(?) in his fold. he'll lose in other towns in the 2nd district (Leon, Alimodian, Leganes, Zarraga, San Miguel) because Syjuco holds a tight grasp on the local officials in these towns. Money speaks too. just my opinion. unless, Albertito Lopez will really pour his billions to the Gorriceta warchest to match those of Syjuco's. Payback time.

With 5 SM shopping centers in Iloilo, no wonder palangga man sang Ilonggos SM by patronizing their shops. Their occupancy rate is high, it shows Iloilo is SM-country.

Eversince the first SM outside manila or luzon came to Iloilo, wala gid sila kaagi untat operations nila diri  ... it shows the resiliency of Iloilo's economy decades ago and still growing strong up to now.

Wow! Clean energy for Guimaras... This is great!!! This investment is one way to meet the growing demand of electricity in Guimaras or even provinces in Panay...:banana:

Iloilo, Davao are new Call Center SpotsOutside of Metro Manila, Iloilo City and Davao City are being targeted as the new hot spots for opening new call centers, according to BusinessWeek.

The international business magazine has named the cities of Iloilo and Davao as two of the world’s new hotspots for business processoutsourcing (BPO) investments.

BusinessWeek magazine said Iloilo and Davao were among the 31 cities that were being eyed by BPO investors due to economic and political pressures to outsource work to lower-cost cities, said an article posted on its website last May 2. Bacolod not included in list of new BPO hotspots

By Jerson O. Coronica

DESPITE the presence of some of the world’s finest and biggest business process outsourcing (BPO) firms in the city, Bacolod was not included in the list of 31 cities cited as new BPO hotspots in the world.

International magazine Business Week, in its February issue, cited Iloilo and Davao cities as two of the world’s top BPO investment sites.
In an article posted in the magazine’s website, it said “BPO companies were looking to outsource work to lower-cost cities due to economic and political pressures”.

It said “while widespread layoffs in western countries, especially in the US, have afforded global outsourcing highly skilled workers to beef up their presence in the United States, many companies were still looking to invest in less costly cities in South America, Europe and Asia”.

The magazine based its article on a report released by KPMG in February, which said the two cities in the Philippines were rapidly emerging to compete with traditional BPO destinations such as Bangalore, Chennai and Shanghai. KPMG is a global network of professional services firms.

The KPMG report called “Exploring Global Frontiers” noted traditional BPO locations that rapidly approach saturation point, stating that “there was a sizable opportunity for these new and emerging locations to swallow up a large proportion of the new outsourcing work, which the credit crisis was apparently creating.”

According to the report, Iloilo was noted as the educational hub in the Philippines’ Western Visayas Region with six universities, more than 30 colleges and technical schools, which produce more than 17,000 student graduates yearly.
Also, the city was cited for its large pool of talent owing to a number of educational institutions and strong English skills of the population.
At present, there are seven BPO firms in the city. These include call centers, software development, medical and other data transcription, animation and digital content and engineering design.

Davao, on the other hand, was also cited because of its English-speaking talent pool with many cultural ties to the US owing to its large number of universities and colleges. The KPMG report further said that some companies were setting up training centers in Davao, which were also being used to train the companies’ employees from other operating centers in the country.

Bacolod, however, emerged as one of the best sites for BPO in the Philippines, as its local government was already planning to push the city to be one of the BPO hubs in Western Visayas.

Cebu, where many of the big call centers can be found, did not make it to the list either.

In a recent report of one of the call centers in the city today, it said 41% of their manpower is in the Philippines and they see the country as a vital site for the business.

Before yearend, another BPO firm -- Clerysys -- is reportedly eyeing a site in Western Visayas, although it is not yet sure if it is going to be here in Bacolod, in Cebu or in Iloilo.
Bacolod, at present, is home to some of the world’s top-performing BPO firms in the world, including Convergys, TeleTech, Teleperfomance, Focus Pacific and Alliance Call Centre.

Still in a state of shock: My mentor, Professor Henry F. Funtecha of UP Visayas-Center for West Visayan Studies, is in critical condition due to "dissective aneurysm'' or naglupok ang ugat. I believe he's still in ICU of Iloilo Doctors' Hospital. Prayers needed.

He has done so many things about Iloilo, Panayanon or Western Visayas culture and you probably read his column on The News Today. I'm just shocked and sad since he is my mentor.

By James Earl E. Ogatis

THE Department of Agriculture, Regional Crop Protection Center (DA-RCPC) launched the first biological control satellite laboratory in Panay at the Iloilo State College of Fisheries (ISCOF) San Enrique Campus.

CPU celebrates 104th Foundation Day

CPU celebrated her 104th Foundation Day on October 1, 2009. The day-long celebration began with the annual memorial service and wreath laying ceremonies at the Philippine-American Cemetery, Jaro Iloilo City.

CPU started as Jaro Industrial School on October 1, 1905 under the leadership of its first principal, Dr. William O. Valentine. American missionaries and the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society played a major role in the development of the school, becoming Central Philippine College in 1923 and Central Philippine University in 1953.

The memorial service and wreath laying ceremonies started at 6:30 AM with the invocation of Pastor Alfred C. Morales. Pastor and Mrs. Kim de la Cruz raised the American flag, while Vice Presidents, Prof. Rowena Lib-on (Finance & Enterprises) and Dr. Fely Chin (Academic Affairs) hoisted the Philippine flag. National anthems of both nations were played, respectively while their flags were raised.

CPU President Dr. Teodoro C. Robles gave the welcome message amidst the presence of deans, principals, unit heads, retired CPU employees, and several members of the Board of Trustees and Corporation. Dr. Robles mentioned that the American missionaries from distant land left the comforts of their home to bring Christian faith and education to our shores 104 years ago.

He said, “As we bring to mind their life and works, let us not forget the value of their contributions to Central Philippine University... They exchanged comfort for inconvenience, their time of pursuit for personal gain in pursuing activities for the good of others, their life of material abundance and certainty to life of meagerness and uncertainty, so they could bring about something better for others, especially for us.”

After Dr. Anita U. Ellenberger, Director of the Cultural Affairs Office read a recollection on the life of Dr. William O. Valentine, the laying of wreaths on the grave of American missionaries entered at the Philippine-American Cemetery was done. Rev Joniel Howard H. Gico, VP for Administration, closed the program with a prayer and benediction.

The Cultural Affairs Office, in charge of this year’s celebration, also organized and held at the Alumni Promenade Concert Park the Opening Program (8:30 AM); Games Series (9:30 AM); and Showcase of Talents (5:30).

In the morning program, CPU launched the “White Gift in October”, a donation drive for the victims of typhoon Ondoy flood in Metro Manila. A total cash of PhP25,000.00 and 11 boxes of goods were raised during that gift-giving program.

At 2:00 PM, the CPU ROTC Unit held the Annual Presentation of Sponsors at the Parade Grounds. Major Gen. Jerry V. Jalandoni, Vice Commander, Philippine Army (CPU ROTC Class ’74) was the guest speaker.

Prior to the main event, the landing of two Huey helicopters and the Philippine Army parachuting team surprised and awed the crowd. Signaling the arrival of the honored guest, the firing of the 105-mm Howitzer took much attention from the audience./PN

I just checked SM Prime website, grabe lapad gali di land area sang SM City Iloilo 17.5 hectares. Mas dako pa gali ang land area ta di keysa SM Megamall nga 10.5 hectares lang. Ang Mall of Asia is 19.5 hectares. 31.6 hectares ang SM Pampanga, pinakalapad sa tanan.

Does that include the space that is unoccupied and was supposed to be for the joint venture between the Luzzuriagas and the Sys? If that's the case, I don't think the figure that SM Prime refers to the existing mall and parking lot alone.

daw damo na power projects sa province haw.. maayo ni nga preparasyon
Yes, maayo gid tuod. From the ews daw amo ini ang guwas niya:

Iloilo City - PECO & the upcoming coal plant in LaPaz
ILECO 1 - with First Gen (as stated in the article)
ILECO 2
ILECO 3 - with biomass plant from Mina and husk from San Antonio Sugar Mill in Passi City.

ambut kung may ara pa gid nga manug-sulod. Medyo okay na .. pero daw kulang man guihapon.

GUIMELCO - with Phinma wind power.

I hope to see more energy providers to come.

More or less the renewables could supplky at 5 MW per electric cooperatives except from First Gen maybe. Ang pamangkot pila ayhan ang ma-spare sang First Gen Geothermal energy for ILECO 1? I hope madako siya considering that may mga BPOs na sa area sang first districts.

is that one still exisiting? The defunct area of Iloilo Corporate Center? Included ina siya sa land area? Cos it sounds iffy considering that the main mall iself sits on 2-hectare piece of land. With parking area, I can say around 5-8 hectares maybe?

^^ I still believe that geothermal can produce way more than other renewables as of now...but of course it takes some time to have it developed. Although no indigenous renewable great sources are available in Panay Island, we can still tap from Negros and Leyte for more power.

Again, its not about island "yours is yours, mine is mine" mentality about here, but how well do you power the whole nation. Mindanao and Luzon have cheaper power because of mix use, mostly from geothermal and hydroelectric. Fossil fuel is expensive. So if we are only to base it with fossil fuel which fluctuates (and to the increasing pressure on climate change talks) then in the long run, it is still unreliable. Overall, Philippine electricity is still one of the most expensive in the region.

So in the long run, I still trust my power potential to the renewable, especially geothermal. Of course, as of this moment, immediate power is in need....of course, since Lopezes own First Gen and EDC already (and focusing their efforts towards power generation instead of distribution like MERALCO) I guess they have a lot to owe the Ilonggos for what they've promised from the past two investment's forum...in front of politicians and businessmen.

pasalamat lang gid kita kay biskan ginconstruct sg SM City Iloilo during the Asian financial crisis in 1997, wala sya gin downsize. unlike subong, ang mga new SM malls are just over 60,000 sq.m lang ang pinakadako and mostly classified lang as SM Supercenter.

malapad pa ang land area sg SM Iloilo for expansion. pwede pa sila kaubra building sa likod if they want to.

yes! if only our leaders are visionary enough. personally, this is what i'm batting for more than the TPE although, ok man kun madayun ang TPE. but imo, a bridge that connects iloilo and guimaras will have more trickle down effects in terms of spawning new developments. and especially in this global recession, pump priming the local economy through big impact and necessary public works will shield the local economy further from the effects of global economic lean times.

a bridge that connects the two islands will somewhat leapfrog guimaras in terms of the rate of its development. for one, the potentials for tourism will be greatly realized.

Philippines expands geothermal power use to Panay

Published: Oct. 13, 2009 at 5:42 PM

MANILA, Philippines, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- The Philippines' Western Visayas region is moving towards utilizing geothermal power.

The Manila Times reported Tuesday that the First Gen Corp. has begun discussions with Iloilo's power utility to help stabilize the province's electricity supply. First Gen Corp.'s subsidiary First Gen Energy Solutions Inc. has signed a memorandum of understanding with Iloilo Electric Cooperative I under which the power company will supply electricity from geothermal sources to its franchise area in the Western Visayas region.

The electricity FGES is brokering to ILECO I would be generated by Energy Development Corp., the country's largest and the world's second-biggest producer of geothermal energy. FGES owns a majority stake in EDC.

ILECO I board President Salvador Cabaluna said, "The people of Panay are fortunate to have access to geothermal energy, which offers everyone a win-win solution." Lacking indigenous power supply sources, Panay currently has the most expensive power cost and the lowest supply in the Philippines.

I'm just wondering sa title sang article the content is about the sufficient supply of rice for Iloilo city and province.

Enough rice for flood-hit Luzon
October 13, 2009, 4:52pm

ILOILO CITY (PNA) – The National Food Authority (NFA) here has assured there is sufficient supply of rice for the whole city and province.

If need be, there is even enough to supply areas in Metro Manila and Luzon affected by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng, according to NFA-Iloilo Officer-in-Charge Mike Aguirre.

The National Food Authority (NFA) here has assured there is sufficient supply of rice for the whole city and province.

“We have enough stocks in our warehouse here as well as in our Manila central office,” Aguirre said, adding that “we do not have any request coming from them (flood-affected areas) as yet.”

Still, despite the sufficiency in supply, he favors the importation of rice from either Vietnam or Thailand to augment current stock in the country.

He said that as of September 28, NFA-Iloilo has more than 617,000 sacks of rice in its warehouse, aside from those in markets and households. Altogether, such existing stock can last for some 23 days.

“Our people here have nothing to worry about the rice supply situation,” stated Aguirre. “We’re even strengthening our rice and corn procurement programs this harvest season.”

In terms of corn, the NFA here has purchased some 7,301 sacks of corn from farmers under the agency’s corn procurement program this year.

“We buy corn at R12.30 per kilo for Class A, and R10 per kilo for Class B,” said Aguirre, with reference to the support price NFA-Iloilo gives to farmers.

Class A corn must have 97-percent purity, while below 94 percent is classified as Class B.

Farmers here are urged to bring their produce to NFA corn procurement stations in San Dionisio and Sara towns in Northern Iloilo as they have no other buying centers in other parts of the province.

Meanwhile, rice procurement in Jaro, San Dionisio, Pototan and Dumangas, as well as in Guimaras Island, is on-going, with the uying price pegged by NFA-Iloilo at R17.70 per kilo of rice.

yes, its now Mam Faith Leila Querol. Nag-OIC sya anay sang Summer nga ni, but now Dean na gid sya... Very charming and approachable... Siya ang choice sang students, there were many of them candidates (Arcenas, Yoro, Bayoneta, etc.) but Mrs. Querol got the nod most likely of the student factor.

Good News gid ini. Maayo kay naga-invest na mga Lopezes sa home province nya, directly aiming sa weakness which is power supply. But damo na on-going projects subong related to power so its a good foundation in the medium-term for the province and island.
