ILOILO MISSION HOSPITAL

Setting the new standards in
medical services and facilities
By GEROME DALIPE IV

“Our mission is a holistic approach thru healing and teaching ministry since we are also affiliated with the Philippine Baptist Church.”

THE façade of the new Iloilo Mission Hospital Centennial Building.

With this assertion, Dr. Elmer Quimba-Pedregosa, Iloilo Mission Hospital (IMH) Director, envisions the new standards in medical services and facilities of IMH, the country’s premiere in nursing profession.

Formerly Union Mission Hospital, IMH is proposing to construct a Medical Arts Center project that will be transformed into a Japanese-style garden with cascading water and other designs that will be fitted for the healing component of the hospitals.

With a minimum of about 40 medical clinics, the IMH Medical Arts Center would soon house roughly 150 to 180 doctors.

Dr. Pedregosa said the project will start its construction on the third quarter of this year.

“This is one way of Iloilo Mission Hospital to better serve its clients and the medical staff,” said Dr. Pedregosa.

With such project, the IMH will have an edge compare to other private hospitals since it has spacious parking space that could accommodate about 250 vehicles for its clients and doctors. The project is more on housing the hospital doctors.

From its humble beginning, the IMH has grown from 150 beds and expanded to about 230 beds. IMH offers the following services.

MEDICINE:
• CARDIOLOGY
• PULMONARY
• RHEUMATOLOGY & IMMUNOLOGY
• ALLERGOLOGY
• PSYCHIATRY
• NEUROLOGY
• DERMATOLOGY
• NEPHROLOGY WITH HEMODIALYSIS UNIT

SURGERY
• GENERAL SURGERY
• OPTHALMOLOGY
• NEUROSURGERY
• CARDIOVASCULAR & THORACIC SURGERY

DA Secretary to visit Iloilo agri facilities

ILOILO City – Secretary Domingo Panganiban of the Department of Agriculture (DA) will be in the city and province of Iloilo on April 10 to inspect various agricultural facilities as well as inaugurate vital projects along the economic thrusts of the Macapagal-Arroyo administration.

DA VI Regional Technical Director Larry Nacionales said Panganiban will be here for the groundbreaking of the farm-to-market road project in Tubungan; inspection of Moro-boro Dam in Dingle; visit to the Dairy Zone in Tigbauan; and inauguration of the plant quarantine Office at the Parola, Iloilo City.

DA VI Information Office Juvy Gaton said the farm-to-market road project in Tubungan is a P606,666,000-worth project funded by the local government unit of Tubungan, DA and World Bank.

Five barangays with a population of 2,240 will benefit from this project, Gaton said. These are Buenavista, Navillan, Batga, Jona and Badiang.

The project, when completed, is expected to reduce spoilage of agricultural crops while in transit and a reduction by 30 percent of travel time from said barangays to the town proper of Tubungan.

“The delivery of farm inputs and marketing outputs will likewise be made easier for the farmers in the said areas,” Gaton further said.

For the Plant Quarantine Office, the P5 million worth-structure will now have enough space for the laboratory room, quarters for the inspectors, conference room and office of the quarantine officer and personnel.

Lea Gella of the Plant Quarantine Office said that the new building was constructed sometime in October last year, and “with this facility our clients can now be attended to efficiently.”

Excited na ko ... I'm sure I'll be at the edge of my seat once ma share na sang mga ma EB (dinagyang.com) ang ila pictures :)

Ako man gani ... kadasig sang mga new replies

Amu ni ang house where Afriques? ang lapit sa Plaza Libertad ... the place is nice, I used to frequent it sang-una

I've visited the place lately too ... the Mandaue Foam showrooms is having a rennovation inside, probably giving space to the new SM Supermarket.

It's a 5-storey building, which is going to ba a hotel or an dorm.

I find them useless too (other than they are good spots for taking pictures of the city) ... The reason why there is traffic is because of the narrow streets, not the pedestrians.

I like Gen. Luna too nowadays, especially after they've done the asphalt overlay ... At least we can refute the generalization that Iloilo is a dirty city.

The picture-sizes are okay ... not too big or too small
Ma contribute man ko pictures kung ma tiempohan :)

Nice pics IAMME and CHY... hope to contribute more pics soon...

Hay, miss ko na gid ILOILO! Hope to be there by Dinagyang 2007!

Hala Bira ILOILO! Sulong sa Pagbag-o!

this is one of the best pics of Pototan's Christmas Lights Festival. Nami gid man siya no .. BUT what I really want to see most (bit intrigue .. hehe) is the dancing fountain of The PROVIDENCE with the matching sounds, etc.

Btw, the Arroyo Fountain in front of the old Provincial Capitol (one of the symbols of Iloilo) is not working lately. Ano natabo dira? I'm sure during Defensor's time as a governor gin-budgetan ini nila. Arroyo's Fountain in the heart of the city makes Iloilo more European in style. It's a grand fountain with a hallmark of four ladies/goddesses on its topmost portion. Tani paandaron naman nila ini. :)

Lights of Pototan... nami gid! I was there last December 2004! The lights were amazing!

I saw the fountain of Providence in picture engrande gid man! I'll post it here next time...

yehey ! Good news for everyone in Iloilo .. hihihi .. supporter guid ako iya sang SM btw. I hope the supermarket will open soon .. and tani may second SM City Iloilo man no? Pasensiya guys pero nagamayan ko iya sang SM City Iloilo .. tani i-expand pa gid nila. besides, dako pa ila area nga gina-own dira .. pwede gid tani. Well, hoping man lang pero basi man madayon.
Kudos to SM Group of Companies .. SM 4th Store in Iloilo will never be a "wish" anymore .. ara na siya. Malapit na lang gid siguro ang opening niya. Go SM! Go ILOILO!

Mars, I agree with you that SM City ILOILO is a bit too small gid man considering that the leasable area is more than 110,000 sq. mtrs. lang. Pero okay naman ina. Combining the present three SM Stores in the province, dako na ang iya maabutan. I would also like to see the renovation of SM Jaro (Plaza) into a mini-mall like the one we have in City Proper - Delgado. The Jaro Plaza SM is very accessible for everyone and ang site okay gid. Maybe indi man palapad ila expansion, vertical siguro pwede man. Three or four storey is not bad at all.

BIR maintains positive outlook in meeting tax goals
by T. Villavert

whoah! a whooping target for the city alone? 4.8B gid .. he he he. Diin kita ayhan manguha sina .. is Robinson's tax holidays tapos na and so with several big stores etc sa city?

Anyhow, it's a good target and very reasonable indeed. I don't think they'll set the target collection kung wala namang basis or potential source. It's good for Iloilo City for sure. I wish the provincial collection will again surpass its own target.

More than anything else, maintain our city and provincial positive budget .. walang utang .. dahil mahirap magbayad. :) Kabay pa may surplus naman kita sa Iloilo.

Found this while reading posts in Dinagyang.Com. I think kay Nong Mauro ini siguro but the phrase looks like what Chymera had ..

Seems that Australian contigents are all set and ready na for Dinagyang 2007. Daw ako nasadyahan magbasa ah. They're more advance in preparation compare diri. Si wecky I'm sure mapuli and some of our friends here and sa US kay gin-contact niya na. Hopefully, all set and prepared na tanan by October this year. Looking forward gid ang tanan. :)

Metro, approved na ini ang 2 congressional districts for City of Iloilo? I read this stuff ages ago pero wala pa ko kabati sang confirmation .. though there's a plan gid man. I think City Proper-Molo-Arevalo will be grouped as one whilst Jaro-LaPaz-Mandurriao in the second group. I hope ma-realised gid ang bagay nga ini. Anyway, Kudos to Mayor Trenas for the job well done!

So far wala pa ako update... Imagine 2 districts! Dako gid ni bulig in terms of INCREASE in BUDGET... Te, kundi matutukon gid ang kada lugar... kada distrito may iya nga Congressman... padamo damo sila project eh... Bal-an ko sa Senate ni bala subong. I don't think pigado ang purchasing power sang Ilonggo. Damo kwarta sa Iloilo  What I admire though is the frugality and conservative spending habits of the Ilonggos. :)
aw ah. Pigado man ang iban eh. Indi man tanan maayohan gid. But Iloilo has a huge middle-class to support the city and province's economy. Besides, we're glad nga damo Ilonggos diri sa abroad that until now are very much willing to help people in Iloilo. Mas baskog suporta sang mga Ilonggos diri outside the country more than anything else. Aside of course the positive upswing sang economy dira sa aton sa Iloilo.

Good for the town of Dumangas. With the newly-opened Dumangas Trading Center and Fish Processing Plant, Dumangas income will soon improve. Like you, I still go for a good deal of commercial buildings before a certain place will be called a city. Passi City at present is developing their commercial district as well though (in my opinion) still needs further improvement. I hope to see Passi City teeming with buildings and businesses in the future and not ONLY a sugar central city.
Agree gid amigo. There's a rise of call for development for several municipalities lately ... Guimbal, Pototan, Tigbauan, etc .. except of course sa core towns of Oton, Leganes, Pavia .. and now, Dumangas is raring, too, as well. A positive feedback sa mga taho didto sa aton means we are improving .. and we're off from slumber .. dapat it will echo to the rest of the province .. and the region. Cheers !

ILOILO MISSION HOSPITAL

Setting the new standards in
medical services and facilities
By GEROME DALIPE IV

“Our mission is a holistic approach thru healing and teaching ministry since we are also affiliated with the Philippine Baptist Church.”

http://www.panaynews.com.ph/images/people%20pic.jpg

Pedregosa.

...

From its humble beginning, the IMH has grown from 150 beds and expanded to about 230 beds. IMH offers the following services.

Another best news happening in our health sector. The ever growing and increasing hospital facilities. Kudos to the Iloilo Mission Hospital. I'm sure more Ilonggos specifically Centralians will benefit this project.

Damo lang huring-huring for Mission's expansion .. but I guess this one has been confirmed na. CPU and IMH are both expanding in their own rights. Kanami lang pamati-an. Hopefully, they'll increase the capacity more to 300 or 500. Dako ina duta sang Mission dira sa likod.

Night market to continue: Mabilog
By Lory Ann B. Bilbao

DESPITE the withdrawal of some sidewalk vendors from the Night Market due to reportedly low income, the author of the ordinance, City Councilor Jed Patrick Mabilog, said it would go on without them.

Mabilog said there are many more vendors who are interested in acquiring stalls in the night market area.

Business is good at night market, insists Mabilog
By DAVID ISRAEL SINAY

ILOILO City – “Business is good at the night market area,” insisted Councilor Jed Mabilog. He belied allegations of some vendors that sales were dismal.

Mabilog is the proponent of the night market. “I have been visiting the area to verify the reports. Their sales were good. There were some who complained but not all,” he told Panay News.

The night market started last week.

Mabilog declared the night market as successful. He said its opening Friday last week at Muelle Loney was flocked by people.

“Lots of people continue to visit the place, bringing with them their families,” he said.

Mabilog also said the huge crowd during the night market’s first weekend “proved that the area is conducive for economic activities during nighttime.”

Boom Times for Iloilo

By Manuel Villalon II

The signs of a boom economy about to take off are apparent almost everywhere one goes in Iloilo: new buildings being built, new stores bring opened, more jobs being created.

For many Ilonggo businessmen, the noise from work crews on new buildings on the rise—the Atrium in front of its Provincial Capitol for instance—is something they have longed to hear for years.

It is music to their ears, with a clear, resounding message that the local economy is moving forward, finally.

Strategically located in the center of the Philippines, Iloilo City is the hub of trade, commerce and industry in the Western Visayas, as well as the capital of the province of Iloilo. As the regional capital, all regional government offices are located in Iloilo City, a small metropolis of 309,505 Ilonggos (1990 census) with a total area of only 56 square kilometers. Government offices like the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Labor and Employment, Finance, Education, Culture and Sports, Agriculture, and National Economic and Development Authority, Securities and Exchange Commission, Board of Investments, Central Bank and Bureau of Customs, to name a few, are all located within the city.

Aside from being a political capital, the city also serves as the economical capital of the region.

Iloilo experienced a construction boom in 1992, with many commercial buildings sprouting like mushrooms all over the city. Even the traffic situation in downtown Iloilo reflects the kind of economic activity that is going on in the area. Traffic jams, which were unknown two or three years ago, have become a common occurrence.

“Things are really picking up for Iloilo,” DTI provincial director Perfecto Yap said.

INVESTMENT HAVEN

The Department of Trade and Industry in Iloilo reported that investments for the year 1992 reached P1.4 billion (US$55 million), up almost ten times over 1991’s P140.7 million (US$5.5 million). The investments are due to the high purchasing power of Ilonggos that has attracted big companies and department stores like SM Shoemart and Gaisano to the city.

Companies that are selling consumer goods, like food, clothing and medicine in Iloilo are not let down by the purchasing power of Ilonggos. Such companies include Nestle Philippines, Metro Drug, Marsman, Magnolia, San Miguel, Pepsi, Coke, Unilever (Phils.), RFM Corporation, Shell, Caltex, Petron, Nissan, Toyota, Davao Union Cement, Shakey’s, Dunkin’ Donuts and Jollibee. McDonalds is also soon setting up shop in Iloilo.

The presence of these establishments and Ilonggo owned companies with national operations—the Philippine Foremost Milling Corp., one of the most modern flour mills that supplies flour to several Philippine regions, and the Consolidated Broadcasting Service, one of the largest radio networks in the country—show the importance of Iloilo to the country’s economy.

Local officials have thrown their full support behind efforts to make Iloilo the next growth center in the southern Philippines. The city government, for instance, has approved a program granting tax holidays to investors who put up new projects in the area.

At present, there are 63 banks operating in Iloilo, most of which are awash with deposits that usually go to other cities to be loaned out. Iloilo is one of the few cities in the Philippines which is a net surplus depositor.

“Iloilo has the potential to compete with Cebu and Cagayan de Oro,” Carlos “Bonny” Cheng, executive director of Iloilo Investors Foundation, Inc., states. “It’s a matter of harnessing these potentials and putting them into good use.”

PORT CITY

The first advantage which Iloilo can offer investors is its strategic location as a port city. Iloilo lies in the central part of the Philippines, making it easy for the shipment of goods and products to destinations in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. It is also near the major sealane which connects Singapore, Hongkong and Australia, or the so-called East-West corridor in the South China Sea. This gives producers better access to their markets abroad.

The existence of adequate infrastructure which are vital to industrial growth is another advantage which Iloilo can offer investors. Port facilities in Iloilo are excellent. The International Port Complex at Lubok Point, the old international pier at the mouth of the Iloilo river, and the winding river itself can accommodate both big and small cargo vessels. The harbor is protected by the island of Guimaras, making it a safe haven for seacraft even in the worst of storms.

The Iloilo River Wharf and the Old Foreign Port have berth lengths of 1,700 and 345 meters, respectively. The modern Iloilo Commercial Port Complex has an operational area of 11,000 square meters, and a back-up area of 97,000 square meters. The port occupies 20.8 hectares of reclaimed land and has a berth length of 400 meters. Facilities include crane rails, roll-on, roll-off support and container freight station with an area of 7,800 square meters.

The commercial port complex lies near the Lapuz Area, which was identified as the industrial zone of the city. The Lapuz Area has 300 hectares, of which 136 hectares are already developed industrial sites.

Nearby is the Iloilo Fishing Port Complex, a support facility for fish producers. The fishing port complex also provides processing and storage facilities to exporters. The fishing port complex has a total area of 21 hectares, ready to be occupied.

There are also plans to build an even bigger port, complete with its own power plant and industrial estate, in Leganes, Iloilo, located just 11 kilometers north of the city. Town officials hope to see it become a freeport in the category of Subic by the turn of the century.

UPGRADED AIRPORT

The Iloilo airport has recently undergone upgrading of its runway facilities, terminal and aircraft control equipment. Philippine Airlines operates its B737 and Fokker-50 service to and from Manila (three flights a day) and Cebu (twice a day). There are also direct flights to Puerto Princesa, Palawan and Gen. Santos City.

REGIONAL AGRO-INDUSTRIAL CENTER

Only 11 kilometers from the fishing port complex is the Regional Agro-Industrial Center (RAIC) of Western Visayas, located in the municipality of Pavia. The RAIC serves as a magnet to attract investors to put their factories in Iloilo. Investors in RAIC enjoy tax holidays and other privileges granted by the Department of Trade and Board of Investments. Right now, Coca-Cola and Magnolia have plants located there. The Magnolia plant caters to the ice cream market of the region, which is estimated at about five million people. Some of the ice cream products are even exported to Japan.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS

Beside Pavia and Iloilo City is the municipality of Leganes where a foreign developer is planning to reclaim land from the sea and build a deep water port and a 1,000-hectare industrial complex. This proposed Leganes Industrial Zone is just three kilometers away from the Iloilo Commercial Port Complex and the Lapuz Industrial Zone.

Beside Leganes is the municipality of Zarraga, where an international airport is being planned. Further developments also include a circumferential road that will link the Lapuz Industrial Zone and the commercial port complex to the Iloilo airport, the nearby Iloilo Fishing Port Complex, Pavia-RAIC, Leganes and Zarraga.

SMOOTH RIDE WITHIN ILOILO

A well paved road network connects Iloilo City to the 43 towns in the province. The network also extends to the neighboring provinces of Capiz, Aklan and Antique.

Iloilo has a total of 3,942 kilometers of accessible roads and 6,141 linear meters of permanent bridges. Additionally, it has a total of 8,092 kilometers of traversible and feeder road systems and 18,823 linear meters of bridges connecting all the provinces of Panay Island (which includes the Province of Ilolo). The Pavia-RAIC has 40.6 kilometers of roads.

The power supply of Iloilo and the rest of the Western Visayas region is very stable. According to the National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR), the region enjoys power supply surpluses. Aside from the present supply, NAPOCOR is planning to tap more power sources, especially geothermal and hydroelectric.

Water is being supplied by the Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD). MIWD has been recently granted a P484 million (US$18 million) loan by the Asian Development Bank to further boost its operations and to undertake projects to increase its capacity.

The telecommunications sector of the province is also improving. The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) is now embarking on a zero-backlog program to meet all telephone applications by the year 2000. In Iloilo alone, PLDT plans to install another 20,700 lines, majority of which will have international and direct dialing capabilities. In addition, these lines will also have call forwarding and conference features. Cellular phone service is also now available.

At present, Iloilo has six telephone exchanges, 18 toll stations, 65 telegraphic stations, nine postal stations, 48 regular post offices, two TV stations, three daily newspapers and more than a dozen FM and AM radio stations.

ILOILO AS A PRODUCER

The province of Iloilo is considered the food bowl of Western Visayas—if not the whole Visayas. Iloilo has a total land area of 1.2 million hectares and its fertile soil is suitable for any kind of crop. Main agricultural products include rice, sugar, mango, coconut and corn but the potential is there for higher-yielding crops such as potato and black pepper. Iloilo sends its rice to neighboring provinces and even to other regions. The mangoes find their way to the export market and to the fruit juice drink industry. Iloilo’s highly diversified agricultural sector can support any agricultural-based industry like food processing that may be set up in the province. The sea near the shores of Iloilo is also rich with marine life that has earned for Iloilo the name “Alaska of the Philippines.”

Iloilo also contributes a lot to the milkfish, prawn and sugar industry of the country. Iloilo and the rest of the region produce 75% of the country’s production of prawns and sugar. Most of these prawns and sugar go to the export market, thus contributing to country’s dollar earnings. Other exports include garments, toys, houseware, and furniture made of bamboo.

All these factors can be harnessed to make Iloilo the next growth center of the Philippines, Iloilo Business Club executive director Bic-Bic Padilla says. “Other areas are not as well-endowed, so there’s no reason why Iloilo can’t surge ahead the way Cebu did a few years ago,” she notes.

ILOILO’S MANPOWER POOL

Iloilo’s other important contributions to the region—and to the country—can also be traced to the province’s highly skilled, 1.1 million-strong labor force. According to the National Statistics Office, Iloilo’s labor force is 32% of the Western Visayas’ total labor force of 3.6 million (1992 figures).

The highly-skilled labor force can be attributed to the five universities and several colleges in the province that give quality education to the Ilonggos. These universities include the prestigious University of the Philippines.

Technical training is also being offered at various vocational schools in close coordination with the National Manpower and Youth Council (NMYC). Whether investors seek blue- or white-collar workers, this will not present a problem: there is an abundance of well-trained and English-speaking workers in the area.

GETTING TOGETHER FOR ILOILO

There is a sense of purpose in what businessmen and local officials are doing to achieve the goal of making Iloilo more progressive. Political differences are being set aside and policies affecting business are always placed high on the legislative agenda of the city council. Among the measures adopted by the city council was the grant of tax holiday incentives to new business ventures established in Iloilo for the next five years.

“We want to make business feel comfortable and welcome in Iloilo,” City Mayor Mansueto Malabor said.

All these efforts will not produce an economic boom overnight, acknowledges Gerardo de Luzuriaga, Chairman of the Iloilo Investors Foundation, Inc. “But these efforts should make everybody realize that we are serious and determined when we say, We’re back in business!"

Iloilo's Charm
Provincial living with the amenities of the big city
By Myra L. Arenas

It’s easy to forget that Metro Manila is not the Philippines. That is because Manila is the center of most everything that has to do with power and money, it being the seat of government, the headquarters for most businesses, and an educational center. But there really is more to the Philippines than this congested metropolis. For one, the pull of Manila has to do predominantly with economic opportunity and the “city’s lights” that gives one a feeling of being where things happen. Not much of an attraction if quality of life is a serious consideration. Unless one were relatively well-off, the grind of living in Metro Manila does not leave much to be desired as far as clean air, peace and order, and other indices that families look for and the UN Human Development Index (a set of criteria to rate quality of living) measures.

In contrast to all these, why not check out Iloilo – the epitome of provincial living equipped with the amenities of a metropolis.

For a city of over 300,000 inhabitants, during the workday Iloilo’s population doubles as people from all over Panay Island flock to the city to transact business. Iloilo City is the regional center of Western Visayas. As the regional and provincial center of Iloilo Province, it houses all the regional offices of government. It is not only an administrative center but also a business and educational center, with almost all the banks having a presence in the city and with five universities and numerous other schools and colleges.

Although its image is now a little frayed, especially when juxtaposed with IT corridors and economic zones sprouting around the country, Iloilo’s attraction comes from its people (Ilonggo speaking and conservative) and its old world charm. Not many know that the sugar industry – once the flagship of Philippine exports – was developed in Iloilo in the mid-1900s.

British traders introduced manufactured clothing materials into Iloilo and needed a commodity for their empty ships to take back to England. Sugar was the answer and soon even the nearby sparsely populated island of Negros was opened up for the cultivation of sugar as a cash crop. Iloilo soon became the heart of the burgeoning sugar trade especially after its port was opened to foreign ships in 1854. Iloilo’s international port was second only to Manila in size and importance. With this, it quickly became an international sugar trading center, an administrative hub where banks and financial institutions sprouted, where a railway system was opened, where educational institutions and hospitals were established, and even, where a golf course – Sta. Barbara Golf Club (the first in Southeast Asia) – was built.

Today, the city remains a vibrant and diversified agricultural and services economy. It is still an educational center not only with a stable of reputable schools such as the University of the Philippines but also more specialized research institutions like the South East Asia Fisheries and Development Center. Only recently, Josette Biyo, a teacher from the Philippine Science High School in Iloilo, was the first Asian teacher to win the Intel Award for Teaching Excellence. As part of her prize, a planet in our solar system was named after her - “Planet Biyo.”

With a relatively large middle-class and a sizeable number of Overseas Filipino Worker –families as consumers, Iloilo now has its fair share of signs of progress: SM and Robinson’s malls, Jollibees and McDonalds, cable TV, internet cafes and beach resorts. And yet, in true conservative fashion, the Ilonggos continue to patronize their local favorites, be it delicacies such as the Chicken Inasal, Lapaz bachoy, Panaderia de Molo; or meeting friends at local restaurants like Breakthrough. The cost of living in Iloilo is definitely more reasonable than Manila, especially for food such as fish, fruits, and vegetables. Guimaras Island, famous for its mangoes, is only a few minutes ferry ride from Iloilo. Whether one is looking for a haircut or a massage, a double feature movie at the mall, or oysters by the bucket at the beach, all are reasonably priced.

Think of any successful or interesting Filipino, and inadvertently, there’s an Ilonggo connection somewhere, be it a wife, husband, partner, or some root or route that somehow leads to the islands. Such is the quiet charm of Iloilo.

Panaderia de Molo

Every provincial city and town in the Philippines has a local delicacy it proudly calls its own. Iloilo is no exception. It is known for its seafood, La Paz batchoy, pancit molo, chicken inasal, and panaderia de Molo.

Local legend has it that the origins of the Panaderia de Molo date back to the construction of the Cathedral in the Molo district (the city is divided into the districts of Molo, Jaro, Arevalo, La Paz, and Mandurriao). While egg whites were mixed into the plaster used for the construction of the Cathedral, the egg yolks went to the local panaderia to bake biscuits. Today, the Panaderia de Molo — now in its fourth generation of owners – still uses wood-fired ovens to bake galletas, ronquillos, hojaldres, and much more. Delicate wafer-thin biscuits are still sorted by hand to prevent chipping and packed into the bakery’s signature handmade tin cans bearing its traditional green or red striped labels.

City search for tagline extended
By DAVID ISRAEL SINAY

ILOILO City – Due to insistent public demand, the city government decided to extend the period of accepting entries for the city’s search for the City of Iloilo tag line up to the last day of this month.

City Hall’s Public Information Office would still be the one acknowledging all entries mailed or self-delivered at the 2nd Floor, Iloilo City Hall Building, Plaza Libertad on or before April 30, 2006.

All entries are supposed to be submitted to the PIO on or before March 31 but due to the numerous calls and mailed entries still received by the office, they requested Mayor Jerry Treñas to extend the period of accepting the entries to accommodate all interested parties joining the search.

Mayor Treñas was happy with the response from the public after knowing that as of the moment there were already 602 entries submitted at the PIO.

Treñas believes that extending the period of the search for the tagline shall give an opportunity to those who are still interested to post their entry and for the judges to have more pieces to choose from.

The search for the city’s tagline is a joint undertaking of the city government and the Iloilo City Hall Press Corps (ICHPC) which aims to give an identity to the City of Iloilo.

The tagline should have a high and easy recall value and should reflect the city’s social and economic dynamism.

A participant shall submit multiple numbers of entries in English that should not be more than ten words.

A panel of judges will screen the tag lines submitted, with the winning entry becoming the official tag line of the City of Iloilo in all its promotional materials.

The criteria for judging includes relevance (50%), impact (30%) and understandability of words used (20%).

The winning entry shall get a P10,000 cash prize and ten consolation prizes shall be given at P1,000 for each entry.

Entries must be typewritten in a legal sized bond paper (8.5x11) and should be labeled at the back with the complete name, address, contact numbers and signature of the participant

A positive feedback sa mga taho didto sa aton means we are improving .. and we're off from slumber .. dapat it will echo to the rest of the province .. and the region. Cheers !
you've been missing a lot of municipalities here Jon ... hehehe .. but I'm glad there's a lot of development going on in these municiplaities mentioned above. I hope we'll continue to see progress in our countryside. Cheers!

seems the target is getting bigger and bigger everyday. I remember few weeks ago when they released the first news about tax collection for the city of Iloilo, the initial target is only 3billion. An increase target of 1.8 billion is quite high considering that 2004 tax collection is barely (more or less ) a billion peso only. I wonder which businesses in the city that are enjoying the tax holidays in the past are due to start paying taxes this 2006.
"Mayor Jerry dies-dies laughing" (lapsus calami) :)
basi may kuha-an man sila Kirbs .. we don't know ... indi man ina sila maghatag sang target if wala man kuluhaan ... there's already an exisiting businesses to support this collection pero depende lang gid guro how good the collection will get ... kay kung matabo, we can even surpass the targetted amount. Good for the city and all.

PS @Kirbs, pwede ka na gid sa lapsus.

this is one of the best pics of Pototan's Christmas Lights Festival.

count me in, too, Kirbs .. like fountains and anything related to it ... basi pwede nila himuan Trevi sa Iloilo .. really wondering what dancing fountain The Providence has. Tani nami lang architecture nila .. Arroyo Fountain in front of the old provincial capitol is a great symbol .. may pagka-EU ang dating .. hehehe.

Anyway, good thing more sa australian delegates is the fact that they are giving grants and scholarships sa CPU for deserving students. part and parcel na ini siya sang ila commitment to help students nga kulang sang kuwarta for schooling. Every year six provinces of Western Visayas were allocated one scholars excpet Iloilo nga duwa ang gina-grant nila. I hope they'll increase the number of their scholars in the future.

the list is not bad to look at ... hehehe .. actually very inspiring siya katama with all those line up projects para sa aton sa Iloilo. These are big projects indeed .. and I'm glad nga one by one amat-amat siya na-realised. some are already undergoing in nature ... kuntani ang mga linkages, transport-related, etc nga mga projects, ma-realised tanan. Anyway, I would like that building to be transformed into a new museum of the city. Mas iconic pa dating niya compare sa the present Museo Iloilo. Besides, the building is way too old na .. and I'm sure has been a part of Iloilo's history for a while. Well, suggestions man ina akon ah.

again, the gruelling traffic of Iloilo ... hope to see more road improvements and expansion, and better traffic scheme in the city.

Dako ina duta sang Mission dira sa likod.
looking forward to it .. hehehe. I used to imagine Iloilo Mission Hospital expanding its capacity kay even studen days pa namon pirmi lang puno ang beds. Now, it almost double its capacity and still continue to expand further. how I wish it will be transformed into a MEDICAL CENTER in a very near future. with the presence of CPU College of Medicine students and an increasing number of nursing students as well from the university, indi madugayan, mangin med. center na gid man join .. joining with the ranks of Western Visayas Medical Center in Mandurriao, West Visayas State University Medical Center in Jaro and the Iloilo Doctor's Medical Center in Molo. Kanami subong sang developments sang IMH. Last week when we called IMH people, my sis friends in IMH says ga-start na sila demolished sang old dorm area .. I don't know sang exact plan pero new building will rise from the site daw ... good for IMH personnel and good for CPU as well. Btw, CPU just recently opened their Birthing Center in university campus. Another milestone of CPU gid.

ILOILO MISSION HOSPITAL

Setting the new standards in
medical services and facilities
By GEROME DALIPE IV

Formerly Union Mission Hospital, IMH is proposing to construct a Medical Arts Center project that will be transformed into a Japanese-style garden with cascading water and other designs that will be fitted for the healing component of the hospitals.

With a minimum of about 40 medical clinics, the IMH Medical Arts Center would soon house roughly 150 to 180 doctors.

Dr. Pedregosa said the project will start its construction on the third quarter of this year.

yehey .. lipay gid ako .. may expansion naman amon hospital. I used to work in IMH for four years .. last nga bagt-o nga nakita ko is the new Annex .. kay dira ako naga-obra. Kabay pa nga tuluy-tuloy na ang expnasion. We need more beds as we are also catering patients from other provinces of Western Visayas provinces nga lacking of facilities. It's a good news gid ini para sa mga upod namon sa IMH. Keep up the good work, IMH!

I agree Whyte. Dapat may museum man ang Jaro iya. It's Iloilo's premiere district and very much worthy to have its own museum .. Jaro, like the city proper has a good contribution with Iloilo's history.

BenPress Holdings History

Few families in the Philippines have had a history as colorful and as successful as the Lopezes. Since their beginnings in Iloilo in the early 1800's, the Lopez family members have espoused business excellence, nationalism, and social responsibility.

THE BENPRES HERITAGE

Benpres Holdings Corporation derives its character from a family that for nearly 200 years has espoused the values of business excellence, nationalism, and social responsibility. The Lopez family began in Jaro, Iloilo, in the early 1800's, when Basilio Lopez and Sabina Jalandoni married and founded what would become one of the country's most prominent clans. Basilio and Sabina were prominent local traders and gave theirs sons the best education available. Basilio was also a man greatly respected in his community; he was appointed cabeza de barangay (district leader) and then gobernadorcillo (mayor) of Jaro in 1849.

Kapitan Eugenio

Basilio's son Eugenio became the leader of the next generation. In the 1860s, while only in his 20's, Eugenio spearheaded the shift of the Lopez family from textiles and trading, which were once the centerpiece of the Iloilo economy, to sugar, which was then becoming a key export crop. Eugenio and his siblings made their fortunes growing and trading sugar in Iloilo and the newly opened frontier of Negros - in the process demonstrating a key Lopez trait, the ability to foresee the wave of the future and transform the family business accordingly.

But the Lopezes also took their social responsibilities seriously. Eugenio in particular held liberal views, very advanced for his time. When he became gobernadorcillo of Jaro in 1876, Eugenio put up a system of public education, aiming to make all his constituents literate. By now known as Kapitan Eugenio, he also campaigned against the practice of debt peonage, a device used by unscrupulous traders and hacienderos to trap poor folk in servitude that could sometimes last for generations. Kapitan Eugenio also gave considerable aid to the poor. When a famine struck Iloilo in June 1878 and thousands began to die of hunger, Kapitan Eugenio and his brother Caludio contributed money and rice to ease their suffering. Kapitan Eugenio sold a hacienda to feed the people of Jaro. The Kapitan began a tradition of philanthropy that his descendants continue to this day.

Benito Lopez

Kapitan Eugenio's son Benito proved himself to be the most dynamic member of his generation. With the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution and the Philippine-American War, Benito, although only in his early 20's, became a key member of the Iloilo revolutionary council. Other Lopezes such as Benito's brothers Vicente and Ramon, fought in the infantry. The Lopez family was right in the thick of the struggle in Iloilo, because nationalism was a key Lopez tenet, even in the 19th century.

After the war ended in 1901 and Iloilo began to rebuild itself, Benito became a leading political figure. In 1901, he opened what became the region's leading newspaper, El Tiempo. In 1903, at the age of 26, he was elected municipal vice-president or vice-mayor of Jaro, and then in 1906, he was elected governor of Iloilo. After a successful first term, Benito was reelected by a larger margin in November 1907.

Eugenio and Fernando Lopez

Benito and wife Presentacion Hofileña Lopez had two sons: Eugenio and Fernando. Eugenio, known as Eñing, distinguished himself as a business pioneer, nationalist, and philanthropist. Fernando, or Nanding, continued the family's involvement in politics, would become mayor of Iloilo in 1945, be elected senator of the Republic three times (1947, 1953, 1959) and then become vice-president for three terms (1949-1953, 1965-69, 1969-72).

As a businessman, Don Eugenio had the boldness and vision to establish the first airline in Asia, become a media mogul feared and respected by the corrupt and powerful, and acquire and masterfully run Meralco, the country's largest power utility. In buying Meralco in 1962, in what was the biggest financial undertaking of its time, Don Eugenio demonstrated not only audacity but also his belief that Filipinos could manage businesses not only as well as but even better than Americans. During the years 1962-1972, he proved this. Without tapping government financing or guarantees, Meralco increased its power generating capacity by a factor of five, adding 1.1 million kilowatts by 1972 and in the process become virtually independent of the National Power Corporation. It became the first Filipino company to issue bonds on Wall Street. It also offered the cheapest power rates in Asia, outstripping even Japan. At the same time, Don Eugenio created a new corporate culture among Meralco's employees, teaching them to put paramount importance on service and integrity. He became legendary for his care and concern for his employees.

The Next Generation

Don Eugenio and his wife Pacita Moreno Lopez had five children: Eugenio Jr., Oscar, Presentacion, Manuel, and Roberto. In the 1950's and the 1960's, Don Eugenio's son Eugenio Jr. or "Geny" was building ABS-CBN into the undisputed leader in Philippine broadcasting. By 1972, ABS-CBN had six TV stations and 22 radio stations, possessing complete domination of the ratings and a Broadcast Center so technologically advanced that its only rival in Asia was NIIK in Tokyo. In the years 1966-1972, Oscar Lopez masterminded the growth of Meralco Securities Corporation (MSC), the holding company of Meralco, into a formidable conglomerate that controlled the country's largest corporation and its largest bank. For his part, Manuel or Manolo rose swiftly through the ranks of Meralco becoming vice-president by 1970.

THE BENPRES HERITAGE

Martial Law

With the declaration of Martial Law in September 1972, a family this prominent and powerful became the inevitable target of the Marcos dictatorship. Don Eugenio was a staunch advocate for clean and honest government, and he had denounced Marcos's corruption repeatedly in his Manila Chronicle. The Martial Law regime shut down ABS-CBN and Chronicle. To force Don Eugenio to hand over Meralco and MSC to Marcos, the regime arrested Geny on trumped-up charges of conspiring to assassinate the President.

With his son held hostage, Don Eugenio signed over his holdings in a group of companies worth several hundred million dollars. In exchange, he received a US$1,500-down payment and a promise to pay the balance "depending on the availability of cash flow." The Lopez empire was divided among Marcos cronies such as Benjamin "Kokoy" Romualdez and Roberto Benedicto. Bu the worst blow to Don Eugenio was that Geny was not released from prison. Don Eugenio had been double-crossed. He died of cancer in San Francisco in 1975.

In 1977, after five years in prison, Geny and his cellmate, Sergio "Serge" Osmeña, made a dramatic escape from their prison in Fort Bonifacio. They were given political asylum in the United States, where they were active as leaders of the anti-Marcos opposition. The persecution by the Marcos regime only strengthened the resolve of the Lopez brothers to rebuild their family business when the time was right.

Rebirth

After the February 1986 revolution and the fall of Marcos, Geny came back to Manila. The Lopez family fortune was in ruins, but Geny, Oscar and Manolo resolved to rebuild it. They reclaimed ABS-CBN and led it from last place among the five local networks in 1986 to the No. 1 position by 1988, a position it has never relinquished. They retook control of Meralco and PCIBank. Oscar took over the once moribund First Holdings (the former MSC) and revived it. Manolo became president of Meralco in 1986 and brought it to new heights.

But the Lopez brothers wanted to do more than restore the family business. They wanted to enter new areas, to explore new ways of serving the public. Accordingly, in 1993, they created Benpres Holdings, the new family flagship. Since then, Benpres Holdings has ventured into strategic areas, such as water, telecommunications, highways, land development, and power generation.

The Benpres Holdings is now led by Oscar Lopez and is now a publicly listed, diversified conglomerate that is several times larger than it was before Martial Law. Four companies - ABS-CBN, Meralco, First Holdings, and Benpres Holdings -- are publicly-owned. The Lopez name remains one of the most respected in Philippine business circles.

Public Service

But the Lopez family believes that it is in business for more than just profit. Geny Lopez said: "I have always believed that public service is the only reason for our existence. Profit alone is not enough of a reason to exist. But if we can serve people, then I think our growth and our success will follow. If we take care of our customers, then they will take care of us. That is the kind of culture a company should have."

The Lopez family pursues its dedication to service in many ways. In 1960, Don Eugenio established the Lopez Memorial Museum, which aims to collect and preserve the historical, artistic and literary heritage of the Filipino race. The Lopez Museum contains an impressive art collection and one of the most comprehensive Filipiniana collections in the country. The Eugenio Lopez Foundation supports the Museum, as well as makes substantial contributions to public welfare. In 1968, the Foundation donated the buildings of the Asian Institute of Management, the premier school for management in the region. The Philippine Asia Foundation, under the leadership of Presentacion Lopez Psinakis, sends poor children to school.

Younger Lopezes are also doing their part. Geny's daughter Gina Lopez heads ABS-CBN Foundation, which espouses many causes, including the fight against child abuse through Bantay Bata 163. It also supports environmental protection through Bantay Kalikasan and the struggle against poverty through the Communities in Crisis program. Among other projects of ABS-CBN Foundation are producing educational television programs and Bayan Microfinance, a conduit for lending to micro-entrepreneurs. Oscar's daughter Rina heads SKY Foundation, which has established the Knowledge Channel on cable television. Through its cable-a-school initiative, students in public schools watch curriculum-based TV programs that boost academic achievement.

The Future

In the realm of business, young Lopezes are also making their mark. Geny's son Eugenio III or Gabby is chairman of ABS-CBN, and over the past few years, he has transformed the network into a vertically integrated entertainment and information company. Oscar's son Federico or Piki is deeply involved in the power side of the business. These two cousins are already top-level decision makers in their respective areas. They seem set to provide the next generation of family leadership in the decades to come. They are poised to carry on the legacy handed down by their forebears - the values of business excellence, nationalism, and social responsibility - values that the Lopez family has upheld for nearly 200 years.

'Iloilo business scene favorable'

THE Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project (PCCRP) of 2005 has released a detailed report baring the reasons why it selected Iloilo City as one of the five cities outside Metro Manila with favorable business environments.

The Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Policy Center sponsored a survey recently, which cited Iloilo City as one of the twenty best investment sites in the country.

The survey, which covered 65 of 117 cities during the period June to October 2005, is the fourth conducted by the AIM Policy Center.

The report sent by the PCCRP to Mayor Jerry P. Treñas enumerated the identified strengths of the city.

These are high profitability of businesses, low wages, high growth of registered businesses, availability of international entry and exit and good Information and Technology training, presence of private and public sector organized training programs, good ratio of tertiary educational institutions, good administration of justice, transparent local government, effective city mayor's leadership and conducive security environment for businesses.

The report also showed that the city performed well in five out of the seven drivers for mid-sized cities.

The seven drivers were cost of doing business, dynamism of local economy, linkages and accessibility, human resources and training, infrastructure, responsiveness of local government units to business needs and quality of life.

The city ranked highest in quality of human resources and training.

The PCCRP report also gave recommendations to the various local government units to ensure their continued economic success and maintain the quality of service that they provide.

Some of the PCCRP's recommendations were establishing linkages, replicating winners, clustering goods and services and reforming policies.

Treñas, who acknowledged the contributions of the private sector to the economic progress of the city, said PCCRP's recommendations are truly welcome and that the city is in fact already implementing some of them. (Eireen Manikan/PIO)

City search for tagline extended
By DAVID ISRAEL SINAY

ILOILO City – Due to insistent public demand, the city government decided to extend the period of accepting entries for the city’s search for the City of Iloilo tag line up to the last day of this month.

(from: Panay News
link: http://www.panaynews.com.ph/news4.htm)
i like to join on this one. Do they have online site for entries outside Iloilo? But I still need to think more about it ... i would like it to have a touch of historical and cultural Iloilo and at the same time there's a modern connotation on it, too. Such will be a good contrast.

JonJon75
April 8th, 2006, 02:01 AM
you've been missing a lot of municipalities here Jon ... hehehe .. but I'm glad there's a lot of development going on in these municiplaities mentioned above. I hope we'll continue to see progress in our countryside. Cheers!
okay then. I guess they're featuring one by one every week or every other day so very limited idea lang on what's what for every town's programs and projects. But I'm glad that towns surrounding the city (the core member of MIDC) are doing well at the moment and so with other towns, too. Let these towns soar high!

common sight in the city of Iloilo. Okay man siya gihapon ah. Though at times daw wala siya naga-function no? How I wish they'll build more fountains around the city to make it more attractive sa mga tourist especially Europeans one. Problem lang sa aton is sapagkamahal sang kuryente. :)

JonJon75
April 8th, 2006, 02:14 AM
looking forward to it ..
Any expansion from all sectors is a welcome move for all of us Ilonggos. It means more jobs / employments for our kasimanwas in Iloilo, and that our city's economic indicator is good. How I wish that expansion in the Health Sector of the city will be followed by further expansions of other sectors as well. NGOs in the city are getting bigger and bigger everyday. Few years ago, banking sector took the lead in numbers for biggest employers in the city. Recently, it was overthrown by retails and marketing sector.

Lots and lots of proposals subong sa aton but until naumpishan na siya, it will remain as proposal lang. And amo ina ang indi naton gusto. Few of the projects are ongoing na. Proof of a solid support of National Government and the ever growing private sector in our city and province of Iloilo.

At least may mga movement subong sa aton. Indi pa man gid full blast but sign of progress could be seen in every corners of the city. Amo man lang ini ang importante sa tanan. I used to think nga static/stagnant ang aton economy but write-ups here proved me wrong. Actually, proved me "very wrong" kayman sa pagkadamo gali projects ongoing subong sa aton ciudad and probinsiya. We're really transforming our once agricultural-based economy into an industrial and commercial type. Not bad for a change since we're still producing ample agri materials such as rice and sugar.

What makes up Iloilo's economy. What is its impetus? Is it still the sugar industry?
Iloilo = Sugar Industry .. not anymore, I guess. There are few more towns and municipalities continuously banking in sugar production with the likes of Passi City, Lambunao, Januiay and Calinog BUT otherwise Iloilo's economy had changed a lot from a once sugar trading center of the Philippines to a multi-faceted economy. At present, the province's economy is so diverse in nature that almost all sectors are moving in an upswing direction. Commercialism, industrialism, etc are all in progress, probably most felt and experienced in the city of Iloilo. Perhaps you've even heard that the agricultural proponent of the province shifted from sugar to rice production by now. Last year, Iloilo is the second biggest producer of rice in the entire country. Mango industry is taken into consideration, too. There are so many changes in the past few years that sugar industry is only part and parcel of the whole agricultural chunk of the province economic segment.

Btw, what impetus are you referring here at the moment? Are you talking about the movement of Iloilo City's economy in relation to sugar industry? Or the thrust and movement of the province towards the present economic situation? There's a lot of focal considerations the city and province is undergoing at present relative to its diversified markets. I'm sure programs, projects and proposals are all tapered according to what Iloilo is needing at the moment.

this is one of the best pics of Pototan's Christmas Lights Festival.

ecstatic!
Ano ang may ara sa Providence, Kirbs? Bag-o na naman ini? Fountains are increasing in numbers man .. tani may pareho kita sang Brussels bala ... inang bata nga naga-pangihi .. making it a symbol, too .. he he. Ang Arroyo Fountain dira sa aton on and off ang iya andar. Dapat pakay-o na ina nila and paandaron everyday. Mas maayo pa. Galing gasto lang .. he he. May budget man ina siguro si gov ah. :)

I agree Soul. KLT has a processing plant in Passi City for fruits, etc especially pinepapple. I don't know why "sugar" is synonymous to Iloilo. Sugar Industry in the province is still doing well (til the present) but is NOT considered as a vital crop as it was in the past. Passi Sugar Centrals and so with the one in Calinog do have a good share of sugar production even now. Also, the province has an economic diversification and variety when it comes to its agricultural sector. The city on the other hand focused mainly on commerce, trade, industrial, corporate, tourism, etc. It's way too many segments to consider on what thrusts the city and province is having at present. There's more to sugar that Iloilo can offer, I presumed. Reiterately, we're "once" a sugar trading center of the country (in the past) ... today, Iloilo's economy is diversified.

I took the list from Dinagyang.Com. Definitely not a complete one coz there's more projects unknown to us or not listed here. You'll know it na lang during inauguration .. or opening .. or blessing .. etc. Especially projects nga ara sa mga towns and not as humungous in nature. The list of proposals and projects were of great importance considering sang economic effect niya sa aton ciudad. Anyway, I'll keep it updated .. I'm sure people in Dinagyang.Com will fill some gaps sa mga bagay nga ini .. I think mas nauna postings sa mga plans didto kesa diri sa SSC. lol. DEamo bi to contributors iya mo. :)

Delgado Street

Delgado Street is another major commercial artery of Iloilo City that extends more or less one kilometer in length. Is is bounded in the west by Iznart Street and in the east by the Infante Avenue. Along its course are four more streets that interest it, namely: Valeria, Quezon, Mabini and Jalandoni if the point of reference is from corner Iznart-Delgado streets.

Historically, Delgado Street is named after the Ilonggo revolutionary leader, Gen. Martin Delgado, who waged an independence struggle against the Spaniards and, later, fought a protracted guerilla war against the Americans. After he surrendered to the Americans on February 2, 1901, he was appointed as the first civil governor of Iloilo.

Delgado Street is lined up by eleven barangays. These are Danao, Ed Ganzon, Sampaguita, Liberation, San Agustin, Hipodromo, Bagumbayan, Villa Anita, Malipayon, Mabolo Delgado, and San Felix. The street is composed of about 90% commercial establishments and 10% residential. The commercial area is from Barangay Danao to Barangay Villa Anita and Bagumbayan, all the rest is residential.

The establishments found in Delgado Street are banks, hardware stores, drugstores, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, a funeral home, computer schools, internet cafes, domestic construction supplies, car accessories, home appliances, variety stores, beauty parlors, water refilling stations, and old and new buildings.

From corner Iznart-Delgado to corner Valeriao-Delgado streets are the Amigo Terrace Hotel, Metro Bank and Philippine Veterans Bank. Parallel to these establishments are NS Ocana, F & C Pawnshop, RTWs' stalls, and Marymart Mall. Right in the corner of Valeria-Delgado and corner Quezon-Delgado streets are the SM Shoemart and across it are two well known drugstores-Mercury and Rose Pharmacy. Establishments from Amigo Terrace Hotel to SM Shoemart belongs to Barangay Danao while those on the opposite side are included in Barangay Ed Ganzon.

Between corner Quezon-Delgado to corner Mabini-Delgado streets are some hardware, home appliances and car accessories stores in which the Export and Industry Bank, Somo Funeral Homes, and AMA Computer School are situated. Line with Barangay Danao is Barangay Sampaguita, while the other side is still part of Barangay Ed Ganzon.

In corner Mabini-Delgado to corner Jalandoni-Dalgado streets lies Barangay San Agustin adjacent to Barangay Danao and Barangay Sampaguita while on the other side is Barangay Liberation and Hipodromo which are separated by Fuentes Street. The Jose Ong Tan Building is situated in Barangay Liberation aligned with some car accessories and electrical supplies stores. Also, in the corner one can see the Meteorology Laboratory of the Department of Science and Technology and on the other side of the street, at the corner going to the Terminal Market (formerly Supermarket), is the Four Season Hotel.

In corner Jalandoni-Delgado streets is Barangay Bagumbayan which is in line with Barangay Hipodromo. In this section, the Petron Gasoline Station, a car accessories store and restaurants are found. Across is Barangay Villa Anita where the ABBA Institute is and internet cafes are operating. Starting from this area are already residential buildings. The Philippine Tuberculosis Society Building is located along the street at Barangay Mabolo-Delgado. Across it is Barangay Malipayon which is a thickly populated area and where the Chinese Cemetery is located.

DINING IN ILOILO

One of the charms of Iloilo is its cuisine which the Ilongos take special pride introducing to visitors. We were pretty lucky when we visited the "queen city of the south" as Iloilo City dubs itself because we had as food guides no less than the local hoteliers and restaurateurs from there. With us also were Narz Lim and Rex Drilon, who both work and reside in Metro Manila but who frequently go home to Iloilo.

Our first lunch was at Breakthrough, a favorite foodstop for seafood lovers, run by Raymundo "Munding" Robles, a marine biologist who has found his gold mine in the sea. It was here that we discovered "sinamac," a typical Ilongo vinegar spiced with chillis, ginger, ubod, garlic, atbp. Which is so hot and spicy that it is not allowed onboard the airplane for fear it will "explode."

It was a banquet to die for ?. kanlay soup made from a popular local fish which can be broiled and served teriyaki style, fresh kasag or alimasag, scallops, aligue rice, newly harvested latoc or seaweed so fresh that when it bursts inside your mouth, the salty juice trickles down your throat.

And the shellfish! Something novel was the duval or "angel wings" shaped like narrow white tongues (a rare harvest, we are told), imbao from Guimaras, nylon shell, scallops, oysters, not to mention prawns and rock lobster. We shamelessly stuffed ourselves on all that goodness from the sea. We also gorged on inasal manok sa tanlad (lemon grass) and oh wow! Lechon roasted and flavored with tanlad.

A vendor passed by selling "pulot," little bamboo packages stuffed with a sugary confection made with sugarcane. So Narz bought some for us to taste, along with wafer?thin bibingka. Hard to resist, after everything we had eaten, were super sweet mangoes from Guimaras, the resort island of Iloilo.

A well known delicacy known to originate in Molo, Iloilo, is pancit molo, made with pork and chicken dumplings wrapped in wanton and simmered in a peppery broth. And guess what! You can buy the pork and chicken dumplings, frozen and ready?to?cook at the Panaderia de Molo of Mrs. Teresita Larraga, such a lovely lady who will even deliver it to your hotel. (The hotels here will gladly store your food orders in the freezer until you?re ready to fly home ? that?s Ilongo hospitality for you!)

At Panaderia de Molo, you can order other pasalubong including "butterscotch" which is the Ilongo version of food for the gods, barquillos, broas, biscocho, atbp. Other Iloilo delights are pinasugbo (banana brittle), barquiron which is the local stuffed wafer, bas, hojaldres, galletas, turones, atbp.

They have a story about how the Panaderia de Molo was born. When the Molo church was being constructed in 1831, egg whites were used to "glue" the stone walls. Instead of discarding the egg yolks, they began baking "biscocho" (which is buttered toasted bread) from a Spanish recipe and thus, the Panaderia de Molo was born.

Another Ilongo specialty is La Paz batchoy which nobody knows for sure about its origins or inventor other than that it used to be sold at the market, literally.

In Manila, batchoy is now marketed as instant noodles, a great favorite for merienda and quickie meals but nothing beats the original La Paz batchoy served steamy hot and in choice flavors, ranging from the simply soup and noodles with liver to "special" concoctions with liver, pork innards, cracklings and herbs. We wolfed down bowls of batchoy at the Teds Old Timer restaurant downtown.

Also from Iloilo is binakol, a chicken brew cooked in young bamboo tube with juicy bits of young coconut.

There was more to relish, we soon discovered. At the dinner hosted by Amigo Terrace Hotel where we met newly re?elected Mayor Jerry Tre/B> and his charming wife Rosalie (of the prominent Sarabia family), we relished a glorious buffet of popular Ilongo dishes.

There was guinamos with tulapjo and green mango made of sauteed bagoong with crispy pork rinds? kinilaw tanguingue?. pickled watermelon achara and ubod achara. For the main course: KBL or pork cutlets simmered with kadios (huge green beans) and langka (jackfruit)?. Chicken adobo with fried bananas, lamb calderetta in creamy eggplant sauce, bangus belly ala pobre and kalkag rice, a local rice fried with roasted dried baby shrimps. For soup, of course, we had pancit molo.

If ever you plan to go to Iloilo, be sure to bring a huge appetite and leave the diet behind.

I'm not finding them impressive ... pero they look ok
If I were to decide, I'd choose the perspective for the Molo site.

A Molo perspective is definitely a choice by everyone. The old site one looks a typical box type and doesn't command anything at all. Except for height, it's just so common .. architecture is not that impressive.

I prefer the Molo Site also. I think it is time for us to spread out the new buidlings somewhere outside the congested city proper and we can develop the city proper area as a living museum.

Agree Soul. The city proper is too congested already. Perhaps it's the right time to spice up Molo's economic strata as well. :) Mind you, Molo is the Athens of Iloilo ... another museum area in the making. :)

I've heard it, too. Prof niya gid man ina. Anyway, GMA should remember that Iloilo gave her a good vote last election .. so dapat makadto da siya pirmi. :) Above anything else, the President's visit is vital to province economy. Proof lang ina nga Iloilo's security is good enough to have her stay or visit anytime of the year. Hopefully, sa pagkadto niya sa aton lugar, may bitbit naman siya nga projects or investors.

is the new airport of iloilo being contructed? where? far from the the current airport?
There's an ongoing construction (of the new Iloilo Airport) in Sta.Barbara-Cabatuan area, Ianers. Sta Barbara town is just 16km away from the city. Probably the new airport site is somewhere between 18-22 km (located in the tri-boundaries of Sta Barbara-San Miguel-Cabatuan towns) from Iloilo City . Target completion will be October 2006 and target opening is on the first quarter of 2007.

If I were to decide, I'd choose the perspective for the Molo site.

I agree. I prefer the one for Molo site. However, are there no other choices? The 9-storey design looks like just any other building. Regarding the 2-floor design, I'm not liking the colours (what's that thing at its facade?). Might be better if it could be a little taller too. Chy, do you have an article that accompanies these pictures?

It might be a nice idea if they could solicit designs from all Ilonggos, perhaps in the form of a contest-just like what they did for the WTC in New York. I think they should search for the best possible design because it will serve as the symbol of the City, its people, and their ideals, for a very long time.

Anyway, these are just proposals right? Hehe.. I hope they come up with something better.

Anyway, here's a pic of the Arroyo fountain now:
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/IAMME00/100_7102.jpg
I haven't seen it spewing water for a very long time. Currently, it's dirty. I think they're not putting enough importance to this fountain. BTW, this fountain serves as Km-0 for Panay Island. :)

I don't think the fountain is functioning "properly" lately, dizflip. On and off siguro. Depende kung may occasion. The last time I've seen it working was way back 2000. I hope they'll appropriate funds to rebuild Arroyo Fountain.

More innovations set
for Iloilo City night market

By DAVID ISRAEL SINAY

ILOILO City – The city government shall introduce some innovations at the Muelle Loney promenade to attract more people in the area and promote further the Night Market here.

Mayor Jerry Treñas recently directed the City Planning and Development Office to make a study for the development of the area – the stretch of Muelle Loney and all streets designated for the Night Market.
He said it would be better to reclaim about eight to nine meters of the area on the coast of the Muelle Loney promenade and make innovations to beautify the place.

This way, he said, it could attract more people to visit and stroll around the place.

Treñas’ directive followed after some vendors at the Night Market area complained of low sales a few days after the Night Market Ordinance was implemented Friday last week, March 31.

Last Monday, some vendors went to Treñas’ office and complained of having low sales at the Night Market unlike in their usual vending areas.

Vendors around the city selling at night – along General Luna St., Infante Avenue, Delgado St., and Guanco St., among others – were gathered and placed at the Night Market area at the implementation of the Ordinance.

But due to the vendors’ complaint of having meager sales, Treñas allowed them to go back to their original selling places to continue business despite the Ordinance still on the experimental stage.

However, the Night Market Ordinance proponent, Councilor Jed Mabilog insisted that business was doing well at the area.

He belied allegations of some vendors that sales were dismal.

He said he had been consistently visiting the area to know if the area is conducive for vendors to do business.

Mabilog stressed that the Task Force on Anti-Squatting and Illegal Structures (TF ASIS) and the Chief Executive should have the “political will” in clearing the city’s sidewalks of illegal structures.

The task force was created to dismantle illegally erected structures – mostly by sidewalk vendors -- along the city’s thoroughfares.

“Lots of people continue to visit the place, bringing with them their families,” he said.

Mabilog also said the huge crowd during the night market’s first weekend “proved that the area is conducive for economic activities during nighttime.”

Those who complained of dismal sales were vendors “resistant and protesting” the night market, he said.

The councilor explained, “on Saturday last week, a vendor went back to his original place on Valeria Street. A few others followed. Last Monday, they went to the Mayor (Jerry) Treñas and complained of their low sales.”
Of the 81 vendors (occupying 160 kiosks), 61 remained at the Night Market area.

The night market aims to provide single area for night vendors to sell their goods – from food to other goods.
http://www.panaynews.com.ph/news1.htm
_________
At last, they finally realized it ... even though late na. They should've thought of this before they opened the Night Market. You'll know what I mean if you've passed by the place, man it stinks ... the security is not that good and the place is dirty and.

Commercialism, industrialism, .....

Thanks for the information, Jonjon75. I haven't been to Iloilo ever but two of my younger brothers attended UP Visayas and they loved Iloilo. They have certainly made very many friends over there. This was in the late 70s to early 80s, BTW. I did not know rice has supplanted sugar as the number 1 commodity grown in your province. This will certainly help the RP in rice sufficiency and not have to spend valuable dollars in paying for imported rice.

PLDT, Smart to build 6th
Gawad Kalinga village in Iloilo

ILOILO City – Telecommunications leader Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) and its wireless subsidiary Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART) are jointly building a Gawad Kalinga (GK) village in Barangay Sooc, Arevalo, Iloilo City for street children and their families. This will be the sixth GK village that the PLDT Group has adopted nationwide.

The PLDT-Smart Amazing GK Village, which will be built in partnership with the Gawad Kalinga Foundation and the local government, will comprise of 100 houses. PLDT and Smart will fund the construction of the houses, while employee-volunteers will build the houses alongside the beneficiaries.

Identifying the beneficiaries was coordinated by GK in cooperation with the Iloilo City Task Force on Street Children (ICTFSC) chaired by Rosalie Treñas, wife of city mayor Jerry Treñas. “The houses will be for the street children roaming around Iloilo City and their families. PLDT, Smart and GK will also provide livelihood opportunities for parents so their children need not go back to the streets to work. Instead, they can go to school,” said Peter Tiu, head of the Iloilo City Gawad Kalinga Coordinating and Development Council. As of October 2005, the ICTFSC recorded 259 street children under the care of non-government organizations.

“We support Iloilo’s goal to become a child friendly city and ICTFSC’s mission to bring children back to school. We will do this by providing them with their own permanent homes and by training their parents for additional skills such as carpentry, masonry, etc. We have tapped Western Visayas College of Science and Technology and University of San Agustin, our partner schools, to provide the training,” said Napoleon L. Nazareno, president and CEO of Smart.

“Our kids will finally have a place to stay while we go to work,” said Imelda Dogabe in the vernacular, one of the beneficiaries. Imelda Degabe and her family currently loved under a bridge. She and husband Jobert have seven children, and she is pregnant with their eighth. The family subsists on income that Imelda gets as a laundrywoman and on odd jobs Jobert earns as a construction worker.

PLDT and Smart support Gawad Kalinga’s ambitious GK 777 project which aims to build 700,000 houses for 7,000 communities in seven years, or by October 2010. The church-based foundation aims to achieve the goal through partnerships with private corporations, local government agencies and the national government.

The PLDT Group through Smart built its first Gawad Kalinga village- the Smart Amazing GK village in BASECO Compound, Tondo, Manila, in 2004. The company provided funds for the construction of 100 houses and volunteer employees helped build the houses.

In March 2005, Smart adopted another village, in General Nakar, Quezon, for the victims of the devastating floods and landslides that happened in the province in December 2004. The third GK village adopted by Smart is located at Abubakar, Maguindanao, also in 2005.

Early this year, PLDT and Smart jointly adopted two more GK villages in Brgy. Budlaan, Cebu City for informal settlers, and in Fort Magsaysay, Laur, Nueva Ecija, for families of soldiers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

The PLDT Group has also committed to build its seventh GK village in Southern Leyte for the survivors of the recent mudslide in Brgy. Guinsaugon, St. Bernard.

Central Towns "Iloilo's Gateway to the North"

Pavia: "The entrance"

>Pavia Boasts its beautiful byzantine church which is very similar to that of Pavia Church in Europe.

Santa Barbara: "The seat of a visayan revolution"

>A beautiful Neoclassic Church and convent stands beside the road to Cabatuan.
>The Sta. Barbara Golf Course, the first ever in South East Asia.

Cabatuan: "The Heart of Iloilo"

>The Church of Cabatuan, is conisdered to be Neo-classic with baroque touches is the only church in the Island with three facades...
>Cabatuan Catholic Cemetery is presently the most beautiful and most preseved Cemetery in the entire province.
>New Iloilo Airport, which is to be finished October 2006 or after.
>Town Hall, it is one of the fewest Spanish-Styled Municipal Halls in the Philippines

Janiuay
>Hispano-Filipino Cemtery- "formerly" the most beautiful Cemetery but it lacks restoration compared to that of the neighboring cemetery of Cabatuan which was beautifully restored. Yet, the stairs leading to the arches are the most artistic until today, that it can captivate the eyes of onlookers.

Maasin: "The Vigan of the Iloilo"

>Pait Grotto, where wells of salty waters are found, it was believed that the name Maasin came from these springs.
>Maasin Dam, a popular summer destination in the central towns...
>The Gines Hill, with stairs reaching more than a hundred steps...

love every bits, pacific. I loved the titles .. making Pavia as Iloilo's ENTRANCE. Cheers ! :)

This will certainly help the RP in rice sufficiency and not have to spend valuable dollars in paying for imported rice.
you're welcome, bel1river. Try and visit Iloilo one day .. I'm sure you'll love it, too.

regarding agri sector of the province, it's becoming so diverse lately. I guess time is changing with Ilonggo farmers as well. Sugar is still an important commodity for Iloilo's agribusiness BUT not of the same importance than it used to be. There's rice, watermelon, banana, etc. The list goes on. That's why food is cheaper in Iloilo.

It's the ILOILO SCHOLASTIC ACADEMY, the fourth Chinese School in the city. Located in La Paz district adjacent to Gaisano City. To name the first three: Iloilo Central Commercial School , Ateneo de Iloilo (Sta Maria) and Sun Yat Sen.

That's only a few meters away beside Gaisano City in Lapaz. It's a relatively new Iloilo Scholastic Academy campus.

Anyway, so much for the Arroyo fountain, here's a closer angle. :)

looking forward to it ..
With the rate of expansion the Iloilo Mission Hospital is having right now, it'll not be far for them to become a medical center. I'm sure that with CPU's College of Medicine interns approaching their finishing years, more and more specialities will be available in the hospital. Besides, St Paul's is also gearing for medical center-hood once the university campus will be relocated in La Paz district. Kay ang plano sina is to transform the old school site into a hospital extension. In due time, we'll be seeing these 5 biggest medical institutions in the region competing with each other again. Two government-funded and three private ones.

I've seen the fountain function a few times (don't remember when) and it looks really grand. It even had multi-colored lights beneath the water for additional effect. However, they simply don't maintain it.

I don't think the fountain is functioning "properly" lately, dizflip. On and off siguro. Depende kung may occasion. The last time I've seen it working was way back 2000. I hope they'll appropriate funds to rebuild Arroyo Fountain.

Arroyo fountain is dazzling with lights .. multi-colured siya. Iyan ay kung gusto nang provincial government paandarin. It looks really grand on good days.

DPWH fast tracks work on Iloilo-Capiz Road

ILOILO CITY — The Department of Public Works and Highways is rushing work in the 39-km Iloilo East Coast-Capiz Road Project in Western Visayas.

DPWH Secretary Hermogenes E. Ebdane, Jr. said that the R496.474-million road project is part of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC)-Assisted Arterial Road Links Development Project which caters to the transportation needs of 11 municipalities in Iloilo.

These are: Barotac Viejo; San Rafael; Lemery; Sara; Batad; Balasan; Carles; Estancia; San Dionisio; Concepcion, and; Ajuy.

Earlier, Ebdane ordered the project contractor E. C. de Luna Construction Corp. to double its efforts to meet the January 2007 deadline.

The road project, which is now 67.232 percent complete, is aimed to support the growth of agriculture, fishing, commerce and tourism activities in Iloilo.

The project covers earthworks, sub base and base course, surfacing with 6.10 meter width of portland concrete cement pavement (PCCP) and construction and rehabilitation of bridges.

Over 600 entries submitted for Iloilo City tagline contest

ILOILO City – The city government is extending the deadline of the tagline-making contest for another month due to numerous requests received by the Public Information Office (PIO).

Executive assistant Benito Jimena said that after conferring with the 10 judges, a unanimous agreement was reached to extend the contest until the end of April to give contestants from other municipalities along with many others who signified their interest to join the contest a chance to participate.

The tagline contest, launched in the first week of March, has already more than six hundred entries to-date, with others still clamoring to join.

In explaining the extension, Jimena said that since the chosen tagline will be the one used in all promotional materials of the city, the contest must cater to the most number of entries so that the judges will have many choices.

Those who are still interested to join must bring their entries to the Public Information Office at the City Hall building each typewritten in a letter-size bond paper placed inside a sealed mailing envelope and should be labeled at the back with their complete names, addresses, contact numbers and signatures.

Prizes include P10,000 for the 1st prize and ten consolation prizes amounting to P1,000 each.

Entries will be judged according to relevance (50%), impact (30%) and understandability of words (20%).

Meanwhile Mayor Jerry P. Treñas is urging all Ilonggos to join the competition saying that the winning entry will have an important place in the history of a rapidly improving city. He also stated that it will truly bring pride to the winner to know that he has significantly contributed to a worthy project.

For additional details regarding the competition, interested parties may call telephone numbers 337-1235 during office hours.

Iloilo City has good biz environment because…

ILOILO City – The Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project (PCCRP) of 2005 has released a detailed report baring the reasons why it selected Iloilo City as one of five cities outside Metro Manila with favorable business environments.

The Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Policy Center sponsored a survey recently which found and cited Iloilo City as one of 20 best investment sites in the country. The survey, which covered 65 of 117 cities during the period June to October 2005, was the fourth conducted by the AIM Policy Center.

A copy of the detailed report sent by the PCCRP to Mayor Jerry Treñas enumerated the identified strengths of the city as high profitability of businesses, low wages, high growth of registered businesses, availability of international entry and exit, availability of good information technology training, presence of private and public sector organized training programs, good ratio of tertiary educational institutions per 100,000 population, good administration of justice, transparent local government, effective city mayor’s leadership and conducive security environment for businesses.

The report also showed that the city performed well in five out of the seven drivers for mid-sized cities. The seven drivers were cost of doing business, dynamism of local economy, linkages and accessibility, human resources and training, infrastructure, responsiveness of local government unit to business needs and quality of life.

Janiuay Cemetery is definitely deserves its fame... a neo-gothic cemetery which was considered to the most artistic cemetery at the time it was finished.

the stairs leading to the stone arches are still breathtaking until now.

Until then, when the small cemetery was not able to occupy the tombs, people recklessly built their tombs outside the stone arches making the beauty of the the cemetery fade.

The Cemetery of Cabatuan is built out of gray stone and with roman, gothic neo-classic and byzantine architecture all combined to form a beautiful baroque structure.

The cemetery of Cabatuan is "currently" the most beautiful cemetery there is... though very simple... the cemetery is the most realized version of other spanish cemeteries... It is beautifully restored and the carvings are still visible.

It is the only cemetery in the Philippines which is a perfect square. the aisle to the capilla is said to be the most dramatic with the addition of finely trimmed trees.

New City Hall likely to remain in its present site
By Maricar M. Calubiran

City Mayor Jerry Treñas said most of the officials and department heads of the city government prefer to have the proposed P320 million City Hall constructed in its present site in Plaza Libertad rather than in Brgy. San Pedro, Molo district.

Treñas said this was the sentiment of most of the officials after Architect William Coscolluela presented the project plan last Thursday. Out of the 25 officials, 22 agreed to develop the old city hall building and only three wants to continue the plans of the previous administration to construct the new city hall building at the city government's 5-hectare lot in Brgy. San Pedro, Molo.

To note, some 50 million pesos donated by Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago was already spent for the installation of concrete piles in the San Pedro site during the time of former Mayor Mansueto Malabor.

Treñas said the present site of the City Hall is more accessible to all employees of the city government compared to that in Brgy. San Pedro.

Based on the space assessment structure of the designer, the city needs at least P320 million for the entire building. The estimated budget is P20,000 to P22,000 per square meter. The city needs about 16,000 to 17,000 square meter to accommodate all the offices under the city government, said Treñas.

The same project plan suggests a high-rise building equipped with computerization system. Other than the cost of the building, the city also needs to hire a space planner in order to maximize the use of the area, said Treñas.

Once the city council approves the project plan and works, the city will set a time-line when to vacate the old city hall building to pave way for the construction of new City Hall.

At present, the executive branch and several offices occupy the 2,100 square meters dilapidated building in Plaza Libertad while the legislative branch occupies the second floor of the Iloilo Terminal Market.

Previously, the legislative branch rented the second floor of the new Mary Mart Mall. It cost the city government millions of pesos in rentals. Later, the councilors and several offices moved to the Iloilo Terminal Market.

The proposed construction of the new city hall building was made during the term of Malabor. To start the project, Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago donated P50 million for the construction. Until, this date no building was constructed.

In one of the senator's campaign sortie here, the senator hinted the money intended for the construction of the city hall building was stolen. She however did not identify the culprits.

The Entrance Gate Rotunda at Providence Iloilo
By Teddy Boy Magalona

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/04/10/providence9.jpg

As the saying goes, 'change is inevitable in every phase of life', it is also true when it comes to all activities and endeavors done by men.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/04/10/providence1.jpg
Mayor Arcadio Gorriceta of Pavia with
Providence Iloilo Officers and Staff.

Providence Iloilo is an epitome of how change happens in the field of real estate development. It is a middle class mass housing community coming into being located at Brgy. Balabag, Pavia, Iloilo. It is very easy for Providence Iloilo to claim itself as the Philippine's Finest Middle Class Mass Housing Project.

For the first time ever in a Middle Class Mass Housing Project that it has these features for its main entrance:

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/04/10/providence2.jpga. Entrance structure and landscaping designed by Arch. Ildefonso P. Santos, the first East Asian that became a member of the American Landscape Architect Society and is responsible in introducing said profession in the Philippines sometime more than 30 years ago. Architect Santos is considered not only the pioneer in landscape architecture in the Philippines but is more considered as the 'Father of Philippines Landscape Architecture'.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/04/10/providence5.jpg

b. It is an ovum shaped work of art with a distinct and vibrant character through the interplay of design, colors and lightings.

c. It is equipped with a dancing fountain, the first in the Island of Panay, where it has mechanized water actions and synchronized lightings and music.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/04/10/providence6.jpg

d. It has six daytime fountains that tickles the senses when behold.

e. Night and day distinct looks and character.

f. Reflecting pool with 70 + sculptured brass birds as if flying akin to the movement of ballet dance.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/04/10/providence3.jpg

g. There are massive 'ara-al' boulders inside the pool giving the entrance rotunda an elevation perspective.

h. The grounds surrounding the entrance pool is a 'combo' of tiles, stones, and greens planned to exude variety and playfulness.

i. Two deco walls that surround the pool in a rotating-like motion with its color splints of crafted mosaic tiles.

j. Colored pave stones in diverse circular outlines creating a 'rippling' effect.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/04/10/providence7.jpg

And why does St. Rafael Development Corporation (SRDC), the owner and developer of Providence Iloilo took the extra steps in providing such entrance features to the project? This is to build a beautiful landmark for the project and provide the homeowners and the public a place where to relax and stroll in the midst of 'cool' and 'reinvigorating' surroundings for the mind and body to re-charge. A place where cultural and art performances can be performed to enhance the quality of life and to provide opportunity for the mind and body, including the spirit of a man, to attained the greatest heights that God has endowed. After all, St. Rafael Development Corporation (SRDC) is guided in all its projects and developments by its Vision, "Building Communities... Transforming Lives... ALL FOR THE GREATER GLORY OF GOD".

Good for Iloilo Mission Hospital! Good for five other medical institutions for continuous expansion. I haven't had much of an inkling with IMH considering that I spent my volunteer training post grad in West Visayas State University Medical Center. But I'm glad for IMH since its CPU affiliated health center. I'm sure more and more specialities will be available in IMH now that CPU College of Medicine will have their interships training in this health institution.

The Plaza Libertad site for me is okay, but if we do need a high-rise building, we also need a much better design. It's sad that only 25 people are involved in deciding where to locate the New City Hall.:(

Sayang rin yung 50M na ginastos sa Molo site. That is a very LARGE amount considering it was during the time of Malabor. And to think it was only for the piles... and the Molo design is only 2 floors?

What do you think guys? Daw kalabo sang rason nila nga mas accessible daw ang old site kesa sa proposed molo site. Another thing, kun mag vacate na sila when the construction starts, ma renta na naman sila temporary offices like sa ginhimo nila last time sa marymart mall...pila naman na ka milyones ang gastohon sa renta ayhan...if they will opt to construct on another site, it is much better coz they will just continue using the old cityhall building until the new building is completed... I think we should better get Jed Mabilog in this site ASAP para mabasahan ya man ang aton sintemento :)

Yups..the design looks like PNB bacolod hehehe

Labo gid sang reason nila about the feasibility of the old site...is molo really that far?? I mean, if they could get a cup of coffee in Del Rio every morning, the site in Molo is just a stone's throw away hehehe tanan man guro nga ga obra da sa cityhall naga istar sa guwa sang city proper, either naga drive sila o naga commute, majority of them travel to work....ang tono is, that the employees are more important than the people that they will serve...

I couldn't get over this. I wanted to know where Brgy. San Pedro in Molo is, so I checked out mapcentral.ph (http://www.mapcentral.ph) and pieced together this map. Brgy San Pedro is boxed in red on the left side, and the present city hall site is on the right:
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/IAMME00/mapcityproper.jpg
I believe then that the site they are referring to is the land currently being used as a terminal for buses bound for Antique.

Now I would insist on the Molo site. First, I don't see why it isn't accessible. Driving or commuting to that site from Plaza Libertad should take about 5 minutes, or less. That is, without the traffic jams along the way. I wonder who's responsible for traffic management, hmmm.... Second, once the Mandurriao airport is transformed into a CBD, the city hall would just be across the river. Third, the site is right beside Iloilo River. The river would surely provide a very scenic and refreshing environment. Fourth, that area and right across the river has great potential for development. They could even build a bridge right in front of the city hall towards the future CBD. Nice right? Last, yes, they would need to spend so much of our taxes to rent some space while they rebuild the city hall at its present site. They spent millions when the city council was in Marymart Mall. What more if the mayor's office and all the rest of the offices in city hall? They might 'save' some of their own 'effort' since they remain at plaza libertad, but public funds would suffer in return.

They must plan the building of the new city hall with foresight. They must have long-term considerations. Not simply because it "is more accessible to all [of the present] employees."

Welcome Pacific Leopard, I like the descriptions you've made. I hope you don't mind if I incorporate some of them sa Iloilo Blog (http://iloiloonline.blogspot.com/). and na add ko na gali ang Janiuay Cemetery, thanks guid sa submission mo.

@ERIC: ga visit sa blog mo from time to time, namian ko sang mga features mo about sa Aliwan contingents from WV :)

I agree with you 100% ...

The Beautiful Church of Cabatuan is considered to be one of Iloilo's most beautiful Churches. It is also one of Panay's largest churches. It is made of red bricks with walls almost a meter and a half thick.

the enterior of the church was so decorated that it looked more like a basillica rather than an ordinary church. the massive belfries of the church gives a baroque roundness to the simple neocalssic facade.

New City Hall likely to remain in its present site

City Government grants master's degree for employees
By Lory Ann B. Bilbao

AFTER April 30, 25 regular employees of the City Government will experience free schooling for a master's degree.

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said the offer was for the deserving regular employees of the City Government. Their department heads must endorse them to be an applicant for the scholarship.

He said the Ateneo College Manila, which professors will serve as the instructors of the qualified applicants, would aid the same.

The scholars' classes were scheduled every Saturday with these professors traveling straight from Manila.

They will be using the Commission on Audit (COA) building as their classrooms, said Treñas.

So far, there have been 48 applicants he said but the City Government still opens its doors for more applicants.

Each qualified applicant will be given P100,000 for his or her three year public administration course' fees.

Trenas said the program will be very beneficial for both the city government and the employees themselves as they'll undergo improvement in their crafts in serving the Ilonggos and would earn higher degrees.

He said after three years of education, the employee shall serve the city government with his earned knowledge if he wishes but will have to pay the P100,000 otherwise.

The program was made into reality through a P1 million financial assistance of Representative Raul Gonzalez Jr. and more than P1 million by the City Government.

Trenas was positive that the program would bring to greater heights the impression of the people of the government employees specifically the Iloilo city government regular employees.

He added that the program if it turns out successful would probably pave the way for more scholarship grants for short courses on, among others poverty alleviation and local enterprise for the same employees.

JARO GRAND ESTATES
Discover the splendor and colors of life
BY RONELO LADIAO

DREAMING of a splendid life in an ideal community? Want to raise a decent, happy family? This seems impossible at this time when the cost of everything seems to go up.

But worry no more. Keep your hopes. Make your dreams come true with Jaro Grand Estates.

Philippine Estates Corporation (PEC), the premier company that creates ideal communities and innovative ways of living in the country today, is bringing its vision to Iloilo City through Jaro Grand Estates.

Jaro Grand Estates is a fast-rising and ideal community envisioned as a sanctuary of colorful living located in Brgy. Balabago, Jaro, Iloilo City.

PEC considers the Jaro Grand Estates “a city within a city” – a uniquely planned residential community. There are a total of seven exclusive residential enclaves, each with its own distinctive theme.

One of these meticulously planned residential enclaves is almost done – Chateaux Geneva. On the other hand, the recently launched Coastal Villas has opened its gate for potential clients.

There are five more beautiful exclusive enclaves on the drawing board of the PEC to complete the Jaro Grand Estates.

Thinking of sunlight and sea breeze? Chateaux Geneva is the ideal community to start a dream family. As the first residential component of the ambitious Jaro Grand Estates township project in the busy city of Iloilo, Chateaux Geneva exudes a relaxed environment and fresh atmosphere. The place is only a few minutes away from all of the city’s conveniences – schools, offices, shopping centers, churches, and places of leisure.

This development is home to many residents that enjoy full amenities like a Pavilion, pocket parks and recreational areas. Picture perfect with European-designed houses, this community is truly a place of affordable luxury for the up and coming professional, the flourishing businessman, and the family who seeks a respite from the busy city yet desiring the trouble-free comforts of urban life within easy reach.

Meanwhile, Coastal Villas embraces the concept of Caribbean-inspired houses. Homes have the splendor of Caribbean character, a mix of jovial colors and cheerful motifs which jibe with the fun-loving nature not only of Ilonggos but Filipinos in general.

Coastal Villas residents will soon avail themselves and enjoy the planned town center developments inside the township such as offices, business centers, retail and commercial establishments, institutional centers, and even food and entertainment enterprises.

Jaro Grand Estates in general, is such a wonderful community. Its festive official logo at the entrance gate connects with Iloilo City’s Dinagyang Festival. The mushroom-designed structures bring a feeling of enchantment to many visitors.

Aside from the commercial zones planned to build inside Jaro Grand Estates, the main entrance along Jaro-Leganes highway and the Coastal Road links the community directly to Iloilo’s business districts and neighboring municipalities.

Furthermore, there will be no worries of flooding during the rainy season because Jaro Grand Estates’ drainage system was carefully planned. The place is located in the higher topography of Jaro district.

To provide ease and convenience to clients, the company offers flexible payment terms.

To know more about Jaro Grand Estates, visit its office at 3rd Floor, Estrella Building, Simon-Ledesma Street, Jaro, Iloilo City, or call telephone number 329-6830.

I have been so busy that now is my only time to post in this thread. I was shocked to see Iloilo in its 13th thread. Wow!!! Go!!!

Less than a month ago, I arrived at NAIA Terminal 2 (PAL's Terminal). In fairness, for a domestic airport like that, even local tourists are getting very comfortable. So nice, worth mentioning. I hope that our airport here would be like that if not nicer.

You know what, if ever they will be transferring the city hall to Molo, it would mean greater spending. Second, Most likely the name of the districts of Molo and City Proper will most likely be changed and the political map for this city will be redrawn. Lastly, the city hall would be far from its annexes (City Engineer's, City Health, etc...). But the downside of it is that the space is too small! I suggest they build it in the former site of GSIS and sell the old lot so that they will make bawe. Is it a good suggestion? I think it is so.

How are you, pips!

Welcome back ferrersky hehehe

Anyway, wherever the site of the new cityhall will be, the building cost will most likely still be the same. The concern now are the additional costs and the most likely scenario if the city decides to build the new goverment center in the old site is that they are gonna be renting a temporary space for the respective offices. On the other hand, if they opt to build the cityhall in another site, life goes on in the old city hall until the new edifice is ready to be occupied...menos gastos sa renta hehehe

I think we wont be worrying anymore of the other offices. For sure the new City Hall will be a "one stop shop" for every goverment services that we need.

I just hope the city would explain their reason for "accessibility". Budlay na nga pasakyon naman kita parehos bala sa "blackout scenario" hehehe

Update us more about IMH kung may balita ka. Pareho man ta tanan siguro kay after college few months volunteer in Iloilo then off to Metro Manila. At least subong paspas ila development. Siguro kinulbaan sila sa Medicus. Remember, Medicus is a group of eleven top doctors in Iloilo City. I'm sure ang ila plan to build another 8-storey big building as Medical Condominium and a 12-storey hospital in a latter stage prompted these 5 biggest medical institutions in the region to upgrade its facilities and move for more expansion. I'm sure IMH has lined-up plans for expansion this year. It almost double its capacity now. There was a plan for annex 5 (another 5-storey) in the past pero naka-hold at the moment til the Annex 4 (Centennial Building) will be well-utilised. Ang nabal-an ko subong nga expansion nila is replacing the old Nurse's Home near the chapel into a Doctor-Nurse's Condominium.

I hope this doesn't mean we have to settle for this design...:ohno: :ohno:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/chymera00/iloilocitypics/CityHallmolo.jpg

The Plaza Libertad site for me is okay, but if we do need a high-rise building, we also need a much better design. It's sad that only 25 people are involved in deciding where to locate the New City Hall.:(

Sayang rin yung 50M na ginastos sa Molo site. That is a very LARGE amount considering it was during the time of Malabor. And to think it was only for the piles... and the Molo design is only 2 floors?
agree IAMME. The old site design is awful. Daw wala gid man dating. Typical box-type building .. besides, biskan himuon pa nila 15-storey indi man gihapon maayo tulukon kay ka-ubol sa dalan. Anyway, it's up to them. I just wish lang tani nga sa Molo nila ibutang ang city because the site is huge. Okay ang parking area just in case and indi masyado ma-traffic pakadto sa Molo.

JonJon75
April 12th, 2006, 02:41 PM
Yups..the design looks like PNB bacolod hehehe

Labo gid sang reason nila about the feasibility of the old site...is molo really that far?? I mean, if they could get a cup of coffee in Del Rio every morning, the site in Molo is just a stone's throw away hehehe tanan man guro nga ga obra da sa cityhall naga istar sa guwa sang city proper, either naga drive sila o naga commute, majority of them travel to work....ang tono is, that the employees are more important than the people that they will serve...
Agree .. sa pagkalaw-ay ila design .. joke lang. I'll go for Molo as well .. MOLO! MOLO! MOLO! for the new Iloilo City Hall. Btw Daks ngaa sa Del Rio gid ang coffee site haw? Tani ang Kapehan will be rotated sa different hotels man .. he he.

Agree to all of the above. More than anything else, it's the city's residents accessibility to the area rather than the employees ang unahon. And I hope indi na maliwat ang renting sang mall site for temporary purposes kay kadako gasto sang city para sa bagay nga ini. They are using our tax, they should have at least give people the best benefit and advantage.

gaisahanon ka lang di Jon .. updan ta ka ah. :) Nice updates and articles back home. Daw new city hall naman ang ila topiko didto haw? Kung ako lang papili-on Molo site ako iya kay easy access from Mandurriao area. Molo is also a traffic zone pero not as much as Jaro and La Paz considering nga pwede ka kalabay sa Mandurriao Airport passing Riverfront International Hospital and Molo Iloilo Supermart. Diversion area in the morning and during rush hour is an absolute mess biskan pila pa ka-lane butang mo sa Diversion nga ina. Sa Molo, they can build alternate bridge pa in the future to access the new city hall.

Update ta lang kamo duha kay ako iya, Mission-based gid ako and worked there for almost four years. Right now, damo development sa IMH and damo pa naka-line-up. Sadya gani sila to subong kay damo na PGIs and volunteer nurses. Buhi naman ang hospital ... hihihi. Pirmi ko to gapanawag and damo man kami diri nga taga-Mission sa UK so upadte ta lang kamo. Even Mission doctors are working here sa UK na ... damo na sila docs diri.

@ Chy - I hope that I can pass the NAT of WVSU so that I might be seeing you.
welcome back Ferrersky ... ma-nar-es ka man gali? Good for you, my friend. Damo gid opportunities diri sa abroad. Mind you, Wecky's sister nga engineer na will be taking nursing na naman para makalakat di. Sa IDC siya siguro iya makuha.

Anyway, you have the point why the new Iloilo City Hall will be located on its present site pero it would be much, much better kung ara siya sa Molo due to a larger space and accessibility. Other annexes or city's departments can somehow travel to Molo, too. well, wherever they locate the new city hall .. I hope the building will be much, much better sa gin-post nila. It looks plain and boring. :eek2:

Thanks for joining me Marsleg. Off ko bi subong mo so post diutay ah. Pero lakat man ko dugay-dugay kay mang-grocery sa high street.

Thanks for your input .. dali gid man mag-travel from Mandurriao going to Molo via airport area .. less traffic until you reach Iloilo-Supermart Molo - ePLDT Ventus. Traffic man ang plaza Molo though less lang gid compare sa Jaro and area from Gaisano City to Atrium .. and LaPaz Market to New Provincial Capitol.

Behind the scenes with the Quizon Avenue stars
Text and photos by Janice V. Busil

I am a self-confessed silver screen addict. I have this condition called chronic couch-potato syndrome. The specific signs and symptoms of anorexia and catatonic schizophrenia associated with crocodile tears are evident during TV sessions. Aggravated by the picture tube, I once scored 8 in the Glasgow Coma Scale. In short I am in a pseudo perfect state, quite detached from the problematic world, every time I cross my legs in front of the set. Can you blame me? Movies, TV shows, and sitcoms are the summation of our fantasies. They allow us to be who and what we want to be. They can make us laugh or cry. They transform us into an omnipresent and omniscient being.

That is why most of the time I do silly things to feed my hunger for entertainment and the likes. I'm just wondering. Will this one can be counted?

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/04/10/quizon.avenue5.jpg

Not minding the scorching heat of the 3 p.m. sun of April 7, 2006, I took an hour ride to the captivating municipality of Barotac Nuevo. On my way, I was trying to collect my thoughts. Alas! I can brush elbows with the Quizon Avenue stars.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/04/10/quizon.avenue2.jpg

The crowd gathered outside the fascinating Casa Fiammeta. From afar, I saw Eric Quizon, in his apple green shirt, mounted the white horse as he rehearsed his scene with his dad. The King of Comedy, sitting reclined on the chair, covered his face with a cowboy hat as he patiently waited for the take. The boom mic was raised and the man in a blue shirt signaled the crowd to be silent.

"Action!" the man near the camera shouted. Then they began shooting.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/04/10/quizon.avenue4.jpg

I headed towards the closed gate. The policeman opened it and escorted me to the spacious alley. I searched around for any interesting topic and my gaze settled to a group of people under the huge umbrella. There Valdolph and his girlfriend, the G Girl's Jennie, were chatting with the Japanese man that I soon identified as Yachang.

With the absence of any activity inside, I decided to transfer to the barn where I found the Quizons - Dolphy, Eric and Epi smiling as they were greeted by their fans. The mothers and aunts flocked to have their pictures taken with Dolphy while the younger ones rushed towards Eric.

The kids must have been amazed by the creativity of Epi in his show with Tado - Art Jam (aired on ABS CBN). They offered their shirts for him to sign. One kid asked to have a picture with him and Epi comically said "O cge magpapicture kayo," as he held the camera and pointed it to the group of the excited kids.

Since it was snack time, we went back inside to grab something to eat. It was also the perfect time to associate with the celebrities. Flashes were everywhere as people from different walks of life posed with Valdolph while Yachang and Eric were having a great time savoring the palitaw.

"Pipicturan nyo ba ako? Bagong gising lang ako eh," Yachang comically muttered. Despite that, he still managed to smile as we flashed our camera. On the same time the funny girl Pokwang walk out of her room in a pair of green slippers and white haltered blouse. She was waving like we've been friends for the longest time. Without any hesitation she posed like a model in a photo shoot and giggles after each pose.

"It was a dream come true. Nung bata pa ako pinapanood ko dati sa Sampaguita Pictures [si Dolphy]. Wala pa kaming TV noon. Sumasabit pa ako sa bintana ng kapitbahay para lang makapanood. At ngayon eto kasakasama ko na. Sabay pa kaming kumain," the comedienne who was discovered after joining the Clown in a Million in an ABS CBN gag show admitted as she looked at Eric who was beaming at her.

"Sinungaling yan. Gusto nyo malaman buhay nya?" the Japanese-eyed Yachang jokingly interrupted as he munched some of the native delicacies.

After a few minutes of narrating some of her stories, Pokwang joined the two guys.

"Sorry ha. Tinawag ako kasi dun," Epi apologized as he settled on the chair. He too had his snack.

Further on, three girls in their skirts and boots were doing their scene. The short and cute one was Kit Kat. The leggy Jenny Hernandez and the siren Maui Taylor did a favor for their fans as they smiled and had pictures with them. After a while, clad in a tube top and a white shorts, the alluring Jenny joined Eric and his company.

The sun finally bid goodbye signaling the end of yet another day. I along with the other members of the media said our thanks to few people including ABS-CBN's Miss Desiree Bretaña. As we exited the gate and inched towards the van, I saw numerous people blocking the gate trying to find ways to have a glimpse on the stars.

As I rest my back on the seat, I held my ID and said "Thanks to you." Heading back to the city, I felt better though I had been sweating like never before and had been inhaling dust since 3 p.m. of that Friday afternoon.

I know many Ilonggos were interested to see them but never did. So if you've missed the chance to see them in person, then don't fail to catch them in Quizon Avenue every Saturday night before TV Patrol World on ABS CBN. A guaranteed superb entertainment from the Comedy King himself!

@ Churches - Sayang ang Oton and Jaro Cathedrals. If they were not destroyed, they would have been the greatest assets in the city and they are equally celebrated to Miag-ao.

@ Metropolitan - BTW, does anyone know about the development of 'Metro Iloilo'? Hina ko sa news l8tly...
I agree. Two of the great old churches of the past. It's fascinating to envision what Oton Church looked like before the damage. Nami gid man siguro. The old pic of Oton Church they posted here looks really marvelous! it could even rundown the Jaro Cathedral and Miag-ao combined. It's really huge and the doom is very prominent.

Groundbreaking rites for Tubungan farm-to-market road held
By Maricar M. Calubiran

Iloilo -- Agriculture Secretary Domingo Panganiban recently led the groundbreaking for the improvement of the Farm to Market Road (FMR) in Barangay Batga, Tubungan. The road project amounted to P666,666.

Panganiban along with DA 6 regional director Jindra Lindra Demeterio, Tubungan Mayor Victor Tabaquirao and Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) administrator Oscar Garin went to Barangay Batga for the groundbreaking ceremony.

The farm-to-market road is under the Diversified Farm Income Development Project (DFIMDP). The funding for the DFIMDP came from the World Bank. In the project scheme, the municipal government will shoulder half of the entire cost of the road project. The remaining half of the total project cost will be charged to the DFIMDP.

The road project covers five barangays -- Buenavista, Batga, Jona, Badiang and Navillan. The construction of the farm-to-market road is expected to increase the farmers income by 25 percent.

The presence of the farm-to-market road will also reduce the transport cost of farm produce by 25 percent. It will also shorten the travel time of the goods. Thus, will reduce the post harvest losses to five percent.

The project is located in higher slopes of the mountain and is unpassable for vehicles during rainy season. It is very dusty in this summer season.

Meanwhile, farmer Silvano Tabunggao felt very happy after he received a certificate of ownership for his Bulgarian Murrah Buffalo from Panganiban. He is only one of the farmers in Tubungan who availed of the government's program dubbed as Bull Loan Program (BLP).

Tabunggao said he loaned the buffalo in 2001 under the Bull Loan Program of the Philippine Carabao Center. Farmers from Ayobo, Sibukawan and Bacan, all far-flung barangays also availed of such bull loan program years ago.

The certificate of ownership was given to Tabunggao after he has completed his obligations with the municipal government of Tubungan in compliance with the loan policies.

Casa Fiametta in Barotac Nuevo was originally a hacienda owned by the Lopezes. It was transformed into a mini-park with amenities for horseriding, get-together, corporate meetings, etc and to rival the existence of RACSO'S and GARIN FARM in Guimbal. I haven't been to Casa Fiametta myself but I've heard a lot of it lately. I wish to visit the place one day. Okay man ila horse trainers, Mars?

Once the new city hall becomes operational, there's no need to travel around for the city's other offices or departments. Im sure this new city hall will be housing all of the city's offices...like what I said earlier...a "one stop shop" for all our goverment service needs. :)

Very interesting ... these places are worth promoting
na feature ko na sila sa site ko, thanks to pacific_leopard :)
I'm sure madamo na subong ang maging curious sa Cabatuan and Janiuay
... esp. with Cabatuan, being the site of the new airport, a big change will happen to the town after the airport opens.
Chymera, you have a wonderful site .. okay gid. Sometimes I lurked there, too for new developments and comments of other Ilonggos across the globe. Hope to see more features in your lovely site. :)
