@JulieB...why is he disappointed about Sbux not opening in ILO? I guess having an Sbux is not a measure of one's progress of a city nor its own prestige as Iloilo. If indeed Sbux is of something, I don't see something special about it IMHO (pero gapalagas sa Planner, bwahahaha!!! :lol:) and would still prefer cheaper coffee over an expensive one. High end doesn't mean high-income and brisk economy in the city-economic sense. If we would like these high-end shops to come by our place, then we have to increase our job opportunities at home...but the price we have to pay would be also higher cost of living standards which I would hope it wouldn't be as much as like of the bigger Philippine cities in the future. So, if he's disappointed because there are a few high-end shops around here, he better have to realize what kind of market Iloilo has, or else he'll go bitter all the way. It will come but we have to boost our roots first before our leaves will go on full green...and that is stimulating consumer spending of the whole Ilonggo locality. We're blessed at least to say that we have a sustainable market sans politics since 2000.

Two: An Iloilo General Hospital

THERE are not enough hospital beds in Iloilo City in spite of the fact that it already has eight hospitals. The wards are always crowded and the private rooms are often fully occupied. Instead of pushing for the inane idea of building a City College, why not push for the construction of an Iloilo General Hospital? The city-owned and managed Ospital ng Makati (Osmak) is a model we can follow. Created through an Executive Order passed by Mayor Jejomar Binay in 1988, Osmak today is a 6-storey, 206-bed tertiary hospital that functions as the prime public health care facility in Makati.

“For twenty years now, the Ospital ng Makati has played a pivotal role in the city's public health care system, catering to the medical needs of our less privileged constituents. Its creation in 1988 was, in itself, a turning point in health care delivery in Makati,” said Mayor Binay.

Osmak itself was an offshoot of the city's Makati Health Program (MHP), or more popularly known to the residents as “Yellow Card.” “The gist of the program is the local chief executive's commitment to alleviate the condition of medically indigent constituents by delivering quality health services such as Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Medicine, ENT treatment, and Ophthalmology.” Makati Medical Center (MMC) was brought in as their private sector partner. When the 75 contracted beds with MMC proved inadequate, the city government decided to build their own hospital.

The city government of Iloilo is constructing new health centers around the city and has 30,000 indigent residents currently enrolled with PhilHealth. We should build on this achievement by having our own city hospital.

If a city-owned and managed hospital proves too difficult to build due to budgetary constraints then the city government should instead move mountains in order to entice private investors to fill in the gap.

European firm to open call center business in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY, Dec. 2 (PNA) – A European firm is set to open a call center business here in Iloilo, thereby opening some close to 2,000 jobs for Ilonggos before the end of 2010.

Duncan Cowie, vice president and regional manager for North America and Asia of Transcom Worldwide said they have been hiring and training people for their site here since more than a month ago.

They will be starting operations in the next few weeks but the official opening will be in January.

“We have been looking at and working on opening a site in Iloilo for more than one year. I am very excited that we are opening this site. I’ve been to the site, it will be opened in the next few weeks,” he said.

At present, he added that they have more than 250 employees already here in Iloilo who are “anxious to get started to service our customers and develop the business of Transcom here in Iloilo as part of our growth in the Philippines.”

Cowie said the Iloilo site has more than 800 production seats and they hope to increase it by 50 percent in the next six months.

“We expect to have more than 2,000 agents for the facility in Iloilo,” he added.

Transcom is into customer relations management (CRM), an inbound company servicing customers in Northern America, United Kingdom and Australia.

It has a registered office in Luxemburg in Europe.

Meanwhile, Mayor Jerry P. Treñas assured Transcom the full support of the city government here as he said that his administration will do its best “to make their lives easy in Iloilo City.”

“As mayor of Iloilo City I have always been excited about call center business. That will mean that there will be more than 1,500 Ilonggos working in Iloilo and spending in Iloilo City supporting the local economy,” he said.

Cowie added that they “wanted their experienced people to come home if that’s what they wish to do” because they have been meeting a lot of Ilonggos in their other sites, asking them about the supposed opening of Transcom in this city.
“We are not attracted by a facility. We are not attracted by a region. We are attracted by people, by individuals. The individuals that we have met and fall in love with and added to our organization here in Iloilo are what will make Transcom and the business and this industry in Iloilo very strong,” he said.

Transcom, when it started two years ago in the Philippines, had about 800 employees and as the year ends the number has increased to 6,000.

RP math aces bring home 100 medals from int’l event

MANILA, Philippines – We are the champions.

With a 100-medal haul, a group of young Filipino numbers aces topped the 20-nation 2009 Philippine International Mathematics Competitions, held during the past two days in Iloilo City.

The Philippine team garnered a total of 24 gold, 32 silver, and 44 bronze medals in the contest, which the country last hosted in 2005, according to Dr. Simon Chua, president of Mathematics Trainers' Guild-Philippines, which hosted the PIMC.

Thailand came in second with 48 medals, including 20 golds, while Taiwan was third with 46, including 14 gold medals.

Despite bagging 42 medals, defending champion China only placed fifth. It was edged out of fourth place by Hong Kong, which took home three gold medals, one more than the Chinese team.

The other top finishers were Indonesia, 39; South Korea, 22; Malaysia, 17; Bulgaria 10; and Singapore, 6.

The math teams from Brunei Darussalam, India, Iran, Nepal, and South Africa went home empty-handed.

Chua hailed the Philippine math team for "another job well done."

"Their performance in both the individual and team contests exceeded our expectations," Chua told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Last week, Chua predicted a "Top 5 finish" for the country's math wizards.

The Filipinos' individual gold medals came courtesy Amiel Sy from Philippine Science High School; John Russell Virata from Gideon Academy; Aldric Cristoval Reyes from Chiang Kai Shek College; Alvin Uy Lim from Quezon City Science High School; Justin Edric Yturzaeta from Jubillee Christian Academy; Deany Hedrick Cheng from Grace Christian College; Sterling Alvin Tiu and Dielle Tiu from St. Stephen's High School; Timothy James Tan from Trinity Christian School; and Carmela Antoinette Lao, Vance Eldric Go, Mikaela Angela Uy, Czarina Angela Lao, Seanne Daphne Ng, Adrian Reginald Sy, and Austin Edrich Chua, all from St. Jude Catholic School.

Of the country's 24 gold medals, eight came from the team contests.

The individual contests in both PEMIC and AITMO were composed of 15 questions each and answerable in 90 minutes and 120 minutes, respectively.

Taiwanese Professor Sun Wen Hsien, president of the International Math Competitions, chaired the PIMC board of jurors with Dr. Pramote Kajornpai of Thailand as vice chairman.

The silver medalists include Geraldine Baniqued, Elvis Jeremy Ayroso, Zheng Rong Wu, Martin Lewis Koa, John Thomas Chuatak, and James Daniel Cordon.

The other silver medalists are Henry Jefferson Morco, Kenneth Co, Miguel Sebastian Santos, Neil Chua Goy, Samuel Christian Ong, Arielle Elise Chua, Adrian Raphael Co, Michael Brodeth, Gisel Ong, Marquis Alexandre Tan, Hubert Yao, Andrew Joelle Caguintas, Ana Karenina Batungbakal, John Thomas Chuatak, Prince Michael Balanay, Jason Joseph Fernandez, Jason Allan Tan, Aljan Balbuena, Daniel Christian Ong, and Karli Ang.

Last week, at least six countries pulled out from the contest, saying they worried for the safety of their math teams due to the November 23 Maguindanao massacre, among other reasons – Russia, Vietnam, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, and The Netherlands.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo earlier cited the country's hosting of the PIMC, saying it was a "recognition that our young mathematicians are among the best in the world."

The President urged the Philippine math team to "give all your best in the contest and continue to hone your mathematical abilities."

Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said, "Through this academic competition, I am certain that more children will be challenged to learn and understand math better."

Science and Technology Secretary Estrella Alabastro cited MTG for its "initiatives and unwavering commitment to develop and promote excellence in math education in the country."

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, also MTG honorary chairman, called for the holding of similar contests to "promote a deeper appreciation of the importance of math in our lives."

Chua called the PIMC an "opportunity for some of the world's best mathematical minds to be creative and analytic" as he also vowed to make MTG "steadfast in its goal to bring math into new frontiers and new heights."

Over 200 math aces participated in the PIMC's Asia Inter-cities Teenagers Math Olympiad (AITMO) while 200 others competed in the Philippine Elementary Math International Contest (PEMIC).

Another 400 took part in the parallel all-Filipino math competitions.

South Korea will host next year's international math contest.

You're right... Those international chains will sprout like mushroom soon... Let's just focus lang anay sa investments that can generate more income for the Ilonggos... Like the call center, manufacturing company, and many others... If Ilonggos are rich enough then, these international chains will just put up their investment here... Siguro diutay lang ang hi-end shops sa Iloilo because we have lots of relatives who are working abroad... And these people keep on sending imported and well-known brand items so, we don't need to buy these anymore...

Why single out SM? Is shopping in Iloilo now defined/confined within the four corners of SM City alone?

Is shopping (in Iloilo) the foremost in the itinerary of our visiting relatives when they come from the U.S. or any other country for that matter?

I'm not based outside the Philippines but whenever I am in Iloilo, shopping is at the way bottom of my list. I would rather see and enjoy the idyllic sceneries of my home town, its food and culture.

It's the same thing my brothers and sisters share who are now based outside the Philippines.

Shopping only comes in when it comes to buying pasalubong. That's the only time I will scour the city and I'm quite satisfied with the varied choices of our local delicacies and handicrafts available in the market. Actually I find Deco's Pasalubong Center very convenient since I don't need to hop from shop to shop just to purchase the various goodies of Iloilo.

Iloilo has enough shopping choices as of the moment. But if others want to locate here, why not? I'm not against for more shops locating here for as long as the local economy can support them. The more, the manyer, the merrier. :colgate:

And as far as I can remember, Ilonggos are not brand conscious unless the demographics has already changed since then. :)

European firm to open call center business in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY, Dec. 2 (PNA) – A European firm is set to open a call center business here in Iloilo, thereby opening some close to 2,000 jobs for Ilonggos before the end of 2010.

Duncan Cowie, vice president and regional manager for North America and Asia of Transcom Worldwide said they have been hiring and training people for their site here since more than a month ago.

They will be starting operations in the next few weeks but the official opening will be in January.

“We have been looking at and working on opening a site in Iloilo for more than one year. I am very excited that we are opening this site. I’ve been to the site, it will be opened in the next few weeks,” he said.

At present, he added that they have more than 250 employees already here in Iloilo who are “anxious to get started to service our customers and develop the business of Transcom here in Iloilo as part of our growth in the Philippines.”

Cowie said the Iloilo site has more than 800 production seats and they hope to increase it by 50 percent in the next six months.

“We expect to have more than 2,000 agents for the facility in Iloilo,” he added.

Transcom is into customer relations management (CRM), an inbound company servicing customers in Northern America, United Kingdom and Australia.

It has a registered office in Luxemburg in Europe.

Meanwhile, Mayor Jerry P. Treñas assured Transcom the full support of the city government here as he said that his administration will do its best “to make their lives easy in Iloilo City.”

“As mayor of Iloilo City I have always been excited about call center business. That will mean that there will be more than 1,500 Ilonggos working in Iloilo and spending in Iloilo City supporting the local economy,” he said.

Cowie added that they “wanted their experienced people to come home if that’s what they wish to do” because they have been meeting a lot of Ilonggos in their other sites, asking them about the supposed opening of Transcom in this city.
“We are not attracted by a facility. We are not attracted by a region. We are attracted by people, by individuals. The individuals that we have met and fall in love with and added to our organization here in Iloilo are what will make Transcom and the business and this industry in Iloilo very strong,” he said.

Transcom, when it started two years ago in the Philippines, had about 800 employees and as the year ends the number has increased to 6,000.

RP math aces bring home 100 medals from int’l event

MANILA, Philippines – We are the champions.

With a 100-medal haul, a group of young Filipino numbers aces topped the 20-nation 2009 Philippine International Mathematics Competitions, held during the past two days in Iloilo City.

The Philippine team garnered a total of 24 gold, 32 silver, and 44 bronze medals in the contest, which the country last hosted in 2005, according to Dr. Simon Chua, president of Mathematics Trainers' Guild-Philippines, which hosted the PIMC.

Thailand came in second with 48 medals, including 20 golds, while Taiwan was third with 46, including 14 gold medals.

Despite bagging 42 medals, defending champion China only placed fifth. It was edged out of fourth place by Hong Kong, which took home three gold medals, one more than the Chinese team.

The other top finishers were Indonesia, 39; South Korea, 22; Malaysia, 17; Bulgaria 10; and Singapore, 6.

The math teams from Brunei Darussalam, India, Iran, Nepal, and South Africa went home empty-handed.

Chua hailed the Philippine math team for "another job well done."

"Their performance in both the individual and team contests exceeded our expectations," Chua told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Last week, Chua predicted a "Top 5 finish" for the country's math wizards.

The Filipinos' individual gold medals came courtesy Amiel Sy from Philippine Science High School; John Russell Virata from Gideon Academy; Aldric Cristoval Reyes from Chiang Kai Shek College; Alvin Uy Lim from Quezon City Science High School; Justin Edric Yturzaeta from Jubillee Christian Academy; Deany Hedrick Cheng from Grace Christian College; Sterling Alvin Tiu and Dielle Tiu from St. Stephen's High School; Timothy James Tan from Trinity Christian School; and Carmela Antoinette Lao, Vance Eldric Go, Mikaela Angela Uy, Czarina Angela Lao, Seanne Daphne Ng, Adrian Reginald Sy, and Austin Edrich Chua, all from St. Jude Catholic School.

Of the country's 24 gold medals, eight came from the team contests.

The individual contests in both PEMIC and AITMO were composed of 15 questions each and answerable in 90 minutes and 120 minutes, respectively.

Taiwanese Professor Sun Wen Hsien, president of the International Math Competitions, chaired the PIMC board of jurors with Dr. Pramote Kajornpai of Thailand as vice chairman.

The silver medalists include Geraldine Baniqued, Elvis Jeremy Ayroso, Zheng Rong Wu, Martin Lewis Koa, John Thomas Chuatak, and James Daniel Cordon.

The other silver medalists are Henry Jefferson Morco, Kenneth Co, Miguel Sebastian Santos, Neil Chua Goy, Samuel Christian Ong, Arielle Elise Chua, Adrian Raphael Co, Michael Brodeth, Gisel Ong, Marquis Alexandre Tan, Hubert Yao, Andrew Joelle Caguintas, Ana Karenina Batungbakal, John Thomas Chuatak, Prince Michael Balanay, Jason Joseph Fernandez, Jason Allan Tan, Aljan Balbuena, Daniel Christian Ong, and Karli Ang.

Another 400 took part in the parallel all-Filipino math competitions.

South Korea will host next year's international math contest.

ILOILO CITY -- Construction of a mixed-use commercial center in Iloilo City’s new “growth area” began last month, in what is expected to become a business hub.

Florete Land, Inc., the property development company of the Florete Group of Companies owned by Ilonggo media mogul Rogelio M. Florete, Jr., held groundbreaking ceremonies for Plazuela de Iloilo last November. Mr. Florete heads Bombo Radyo Philippines.

Plazuela de Iloilo is a 12,533-square-meter (sq. m.) commercial hub situated on Benigno S. Aquino Avenue in Mandurriao, Iloilo City. The lot is located near the proposed Megaworld Business Park, which will rise on the 54-hectare old Iloilo airport site, and the SM City Iloilo mall.

Plazuela is composed of three mixed-use buildings, an administration building and a concert stage. The two-level buildings will have retail stores, coffee shops and restaurants at the first level and business process outsourcing (BPO) companies on the second level. It will have a gross leasable area of 8,600 sq. m. while its parking lot can accommodate more than 100 cars at one time.

Mr. Florete said Plazuela de Iloilo would boast of 24/7 security for tenants, businessmen and customers, “worthy of a business hub.”

The construction phase will last for 11 months to Oct. 10, 2010.

“This project aims to jump-start the local economy not just in Iloilo City but also Western Visayas. Aside from the BPO firms, we also welcome small and medium entrepreneurs in Iloilo City to invest in Plazuela once it operates,” Mr. Florete said.

Plazuela de Iloilo was unveiled during the Iloilo Investment Forum of the Iloilo Business Club and Iloilo Economic Development Foundation, Inc. last September in Makati.

Florete Land hired Palafox and Associates as design architect. Palafox used a fusion of Italian- and Spanish-inspired designs.

Plazuela’s Rotonda area has 36 units for restaurants and coffee shops. It also has an al fresco area and the “Entrada Media.” Calle Florete will host the concert stage.

CB Richard Ellis is the business consultant of the project while Amalgamated Project Management Services, Inc. is the project manager. The contractor and builder is Art Builders Construction, Inc.

Mandurriao district, where Plazuela de Iloilo is located, also hosts the Smallville Entertainment Complex, the Boardwalk Restaurant and Entertainment Complex, and the SM City Iloilo Complex, among others.

Ongoing developments include the Ateneo de Iloilo campus and the Kapideco (Kauturan Pison Development Corp.) business complex.

Future developments include the Ayala group’s proposed BPO facilities and the Megaworld Business Park.

Business hub to rise in new Iloilo ‘growth area’

ILOILO CITY -- Construction of a mixed-use commercial center in Iloilo City’s new “growth area” began last month, in what is expected to become a business hub.

Florete Land, Inc., the property development company of the Florete Group of Companies owned by Ilonggo media mogul Rogelio M. Florete, Jr., held groundbreaking ceremonies for Plazuela de Iloilo last November. Mr. Florete heads Bombo Radyo Philippines.

Plazuela de Iloilo is a 12,533-square-meter (sq. m.) commercial hub situated on Benigno S. Aquino Avenue in Mandurriao, Iloilo City. The lot is located near the proposed Megaworld Business Park, which will rise on the 54-hectare old Iloilo airport site, and the SM City Iloilo mall.

Plazuela is composed of three mixed-use buildings, an administration building and a concert stage. The two-level buildings will have retail stores, coffee shops and restaurants at the first level and business process outsourcing (BPO) companies on the second level. It will have a gross leasable area of 8,600 sq. m. while its parking lot can accommodate more than 100 cars at one time.

We have different opinions yet we should also somehow respect each other as well. For someone getting the breaks left and right, feeling the pouring must be kind of a regular rain falling on his head on a simple day.

Yet, for Filipino “standard-bearer” Richard Poon who embodies the realization of a breakthrough artist, the weight of earning the privilege to sing with two of the biggest acts he looks up to is like experiencing rain in Saudi Arabia. Sure there’s a magic feeling that he is guesting in separate concerts mainly featuring the Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez and international star Lea Salonga.

“I often say that Regine, Lea, and Sarah (Geronimo) are three on-top-of-my-list artists I want to sing with in concert. Scoring two out of three is truly a big honor,” implied the big band crooner who has achieved so much as a solo singer in a relatively short period.

Blessings have been pouring for RP almost everyday; no wonder these two big guestings almost find each other on the same date. He gets to do it with Regine on Dec. 5 at Central Philippine University in Iloilo. Barely a week after that, he’d go on stage with Lea in what is a two-night concert at the PICC Plenary Hall on Dec. 11 and 12.

We have to thank the city councillors who voted for reduction of the entertainment tax in our city. If it wasn't for them, we may still lack of concerts.

And because of that, at least we've seen that in a way, the city council at least veered away from the old school traditional way of political fiscal thinking...

...but it's just a start.

Not familiar. Been ages since last ko nagsimba dira. Indi man ko Chinese (slight lang) ti nabulayan ako mag-intindi kay mostly in Chinese language - sermon, kanta, pangamuyo pero may translation may kon kaisa. Feeling ko daw sa China lang ako. :D

Five top nursing schools in Western Visayas identified

Iloilo (2 December) -- Five of the top 20 Nursing schools in the country are from Western Visayas, according to the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) 6.

This ranking was based on the performance of the schools in the board examinations in the last five years.

These schools are the Central Philippine University, Iloilo City (7th placer); University of San Agustin, Iloilo City (15th placer); University of St. La Salle, Bacolod City (15th placer) in Category 1, with at least 1,000 examinees; and, West Visayas State University (3rd placer), St. Paul University of Iloilo, (4th placer) in Category 2, with 100-999 examinees.

CHED Regional Dir. Dr. Rex Casiple said fifteen percent of top 20 Nursing Schools in Category 1 are from Western Visayas, 2nd to NCR which got 30 percent, while 10 percent of top 20 in Category 2 are from Western Visayas, 3rd to NCR with 50 percent and Central Visayas with 15 percent.

Casiple said on the other hand, 152 of the 456 nursing schools in the country were warned to improve their passing rates in board examination specifically in the next three years to avoid the phasing out order, and six (4 percent) of these 152 are from the region.

"The recognition status of these schools will be downgraded to permit status, which is the first step of closing a program," Casiple said.

Next to this, the CHED chief said, is a gradual phase out, that is, the program is not allowed to enroll first year students and so forth until it is completely closed.

So far, Casiple added, 15 schools in the country have voluntarily closed their nursing programs, while no nursing school in Western visayas was ordered for phase-out or closure for 2009-2010.

"This move of the CHED isto reduce the number of board flunkers and minimize frustrations and wastage among our nursing graduates when they take licensure examination," Casiple also said.

He further said that this step is also intended to help parents and students to carefully choose the nursing schools they wish to enroll.

i think WVSU and ST. Pauls are the top nursing schools in Iloilo kay ang nsg. graduates nila duitay lang.screened gid kaayo.
pero ang CPU is more on commercial now unlike before nga screened gid.kita mo ang graduates nila more than a thousand na bisan mabagsakan pa sila dira mga pulo ukon beinte damo man sila gyapon compare to WVSU ang ST. Paul.

Iloilo City beats Metro Manila in BPO employment rate – exec

ILOILO City – The hiring rate for employees of business process outsourcing (BPO) companies in this city is twice than that in Metro Manila, according to a top executive of a European-based BPO firm.

Chris Mason, Transcom vice president for solutions and implementation, said Iloilo has 40 to 45 percent pass rate. Manila only has a 20 to 25 percent pass rate.

“Ilonggos have the opportunity (to work in BPOs). That is double the rate we experience in Manila,” Mason told the Iloilo City Hall Press Corps yesterday.

Transcom is working “very closely” with several universities and colleges in this city for manpower resources, he added.

Duncan Cowie, Transcom executive vice president and Regional General Manager for North America and Asia, said, “we have been looking at and working on opening a site here for almost a year. I am very excited that we are opening the site in the next few weeks.”

“We have targets. We have expectations. Our vision is to be No. 1 in quality,” said Cowie, adding, “Iloilo is a next wave city for us because of the people...the communication skills. I look to build a very large, strong call center (here).”

Transcom, Cowie said, is opening with an initial 250 personnel. “They are anxious to get started,” he said.

Transcom shall officially open in January 2010. It has 800 production seats, and aims to increase this by 50 percent in the next six months.

Mayor Jerry Treñas said he is “excited” with the entry of Transcom. “We are helping locators here. We want this city to be known as investor-friendly,” he said.

Local businessmen are ready to build buildings to suit the needs of call centers, Treñas added./PN
