By Lory Ann B. Bilbao
AFTER April 30, 25 regular employees of the City Government will experience free schooling for a master's degree.
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said the offer was for the deserving regular employees of the City Government. Their department heads must endorse them to be an applicant for the scholarship.

Good job, Mayor Trenas! I'm glad nga maayo gid ang support ni Trenas when it comes to education and people empowerment. I'm sure maka-boost gid ini sang Iloilo especially sa terms sang efficiency, dealings, etc. Well done gid!
JonJon75 April 12th, 2006, 04:50 PM Once the new city hall becomes operational, there's no need to travel around for the city's other offices or departments. Im sure this new city hall will be housing all of the city's offices...like what I said earlier...a "one stop shop" for all our goverment service needs. :)
Hi Daks.
I agree, Daks. It slips through my mind nga ang plano gali is to create a one-stop shop style. I guess you are right to say that. I hope they'll reconsider the idea of relocating the new city hall in Molo rather than in the old site.
caloy April 12th, 2006, 04:55 PM hmmm, what if for a change, they would put a mall to the first few floors in the new city hall para one stop shop guid ya...
makwartahan pa, basi may bingohan pa... ahehehehehe...
nano man na design man, kalaway man na... tani they should have opted for something like the old one in up style. manami guid tulukon. complementary to the citys old grandeur dapat. opinion ko lang na ha. nan basi may magreact.

Zigzag football training starts April 17
ZIGZAG Football Academy opens its summer training program at the Central Philippine University Football grounds on April 17, 2006 at 4 p.m. The very first private football school in Iloilo, the program is now on its third year with courses offered for beginner and advanced football players. The instructors are former athlete scholars who are licensed coaches and are past members of the RP Team and Iloilo Selection.
The program is not only to develop the potential of the player but also teaches them the value of education which is the most important asset of an athlete. It is also the venue in helping the children to be active physically and not to focus on video games which is delaying the motor skills of a child.
One of the oldest clubs in the city and province of Iloilo, it was revived three years ago by football enthusiasts who were part of the Zigzag development program in the 70's and the 80's. This is the only club which has produced at least three Mr. Football of the Philippines, namely Iloilo Football Association President Ramsay Padernilla, Mr. Jerry Vaflor and the late Orlando Plagata.
This program is open to all boys and girls aged 4-16 years old. Last year students from Assumption School Iloilo, St. Joseph Grade School, Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus, Sta. Clarita Montessori, Brilliant Montesori Alta Tierra learning Center, San Jose College, Iloilo Montessori to name a few , took part in this program.

Lovely! More to come pa tani. I hope Iloilo will increase its road networking more though we're all leading across the region. Damo pa minucipalities, baranggays, etc nga wala good access to their town centers and to the city. I'm glad slowly we are developing new roads for easier transportation of goods across the province.
caloy April 12th, 2006, 05:24 PM Thanks to PEC. Damo na gid sila competitors ba .. tirik naman ulo sang mga taga-aborad kung magabakal retirement home nila or holiday home sa iban, just in case. :) . kabudlay man na kung kisa magbasa, di ko katultol ahehehehe... i guess im getting old na guid ya. kanami, damo na mga middle to high end residential areasa ng ciudad. tani ang safety guid ang ila prioritize pa guid kay ti, its an assurance man na ca mga tawo.
the safer the place, the higher the chances of people feel assured (daw guin rephrase ko lang akon statement ba, ano ni essay?) lol. tani they would show man ca map kung where in where. last time ko nga daan nagpuli guin bago nila iban nga route, nagtalang ci ako. lost in translation gwa ko.
anyways, that is a big improvement to our city. small and compact yet big in all aspects. amo na ya...
kirby21 April 12th, 2006, 08:24 PM Good evening .. ari gali kamo kagina? Hello Mars, Caloy, JonJon and Daks. Si ferrersky balik naman .. yehoo!
Jon, nice avatar gid. :)
kirby21 April 12th, 2006, 08:28 PM I hope this doesn't mean we have to settle for this design...:ohno: :ohno:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/chymera00/iloilocitypics/CityHallmolo.jpg
The Plaza Libertad site for me is okay, but if we do need a high-rise building, we also need a much better design. It's sad that only 25 people are involved in deciding where to locate the New City Hall.:(
Sayang rin yung 50M na ginastos sa Molo site. That is a very LARGE amount considering it was during the time of Malabor. And to think it was only for the piles... and the Molo design is only 2 floors?
Lol. I agree with you, IAMME. Kalaw-ay man tani mangikay pero the design is awful .. wala na gid iban nga design ang Coscuella and Associates? Tani inang medyo may dating man biskan diutay lang. It's doesn't look iconic to me .. it's looks like a box. Just like any others here, no question with the height .. it's the design and the site. Whooahh .. Paging Mayor Trenas, abi tan-awa man maayo.
kirby21 April 12th, 2006, 08:33 PM What do you think guys? Daw kalabo sang rason nila nga mas accessible daw ang old site kesa sa proposed molo site. Another thing, kun mag vacate na sila when the construction starts, ma renta na naman sila temporary offices like sa ginhimo nila last time sa marymart mall...pila naman na ka milyones ang gastohon sa renta ayhan...if they will opt to construct on another site, it is much better coz they will just continue using the old cityhall building until the new building is completed... I think we should better get Jed Mabilog in this site ASAP para mabasahan ya man ang aton sintemento :)
Agree sa imo Daks. Namo man nga klase design nad dugay na ina ginahambal nga ang old site is "not accessible" too considering sa traffic, etc sa city proper ... daw indi man gid layo nag MOLO? Basi matamad lang ang mga empleyado mag-travel. And tama ka da nga whilst they are constructing the new city hall, pwede pa siguro mausar ang old one and indi na mag-renta pa. Karon dugang na to manggaranon sang tag-iya sang Marymart Mall. Remember once that they rented part of MaryMart Mall for other city department's annexes? Hulaton ta si Metro. Tani PM niya si Mr Mabilog about this issue.
kirby21 April 12th, 2006, 08:36 PM I have been so busy that now is my only time to post in this thread. I was shocked to see Iloilo in its 13th thread. Wow!!! Go!!!
Less than a month ago, I arrived at NAIA Terminal 2 (PAL's Terminal). In fairness, for a domestic airport like that, even local tourists are getting very comfortable. So nice, worth mentioning. I hope that our airport here would be like that if not nicer.
You know what, if ever they will be transferring the city hall to Molo, it would mean greater spending. Second, Most likely the name of the districts of Molo and City Proper will most likely be changed and the political map for this city will be redrawn. Lastly, the city hall would be far from its annexes (City Engineer's, City Health, etc...). But the downside of it is that the space is too small! I suggest they build it in the former site of GSIS and sell the old lot so that they will make bawe. Is it a good suggestion? I think it is so.
How are you, pips!
@ Chy - I hope that I can pass the NAT of WVSU so that I might be seeing you.
hello there, ferrersky ... btw, diin na nagkato ang GSIS iya? Wala na dira ang GSIS sa old site niya? I kinda lost sa area nga ina kay indi man kaladtuan sang tawo. I think they can incorporate the whole lot of departments so indi na kinahanglan mag-travel.

Graduate ka na gali HS mo Fer? Good choice of course gid. Importante gid ina. :)
kirby21 April 12th, 2006, 08:46 PM Ohh gud luck sa results, indi naman guid as hard to be one of the 180 eligible for enrollment like sa amon nga time (didto guid ngadaan nag peak ang Nursing Demand), basta taas lang CAT mo ang at least 97% nga NAT. sureball na ina.. I hoping nga makapasar ka man (that is if it was really your choice to take up Nursing). Munuhay na lang ta next year eh.
That's good. Fer is from Philippine Science di bala? Hopefully makasulod gid ina siya sa West. By the way, what is CAT means? Pardon for my ignorance sa mga abbreviation ha. lol. Before sang time namon, NCEE and GPA-HS ang ginakuha sang West. I had a form to take an exam man pero mas nauna release ang CPU. Ang NCEE cut-off is 90% that time though ang ila form says 80 lang. Sadya man ah. NAT naman sa CPU in the past is taken after your first year kay ranking ang ginahimo nila. First 250 + NAT sa amon sang una, lumagpas ka halin ka lang sa iban nga school. I think hasta subong, ranking ang style sang CPU. Off 300, start ka na pangita new schools mo. Two years ago, they increased it to 350 to 400.
kirby21 April 12th, 2006, 08:47 PM I couldn't get over this. I wanted to know where Brgy. San Pedro in Molo is, so I checked out mapcentral.ph (http://www.mapcentral.ph) and pieced together this map. Brgy San Pedro is boxed in red on the left side, and the present city hall site is on the right:
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/IAMME00/mapcityproper.jpg
I believe then that the site they are referring to is the land currently being used as a terminal for buses bound for Antique.
Now I would insist on the Molo site. First, I don't see why it isn't accessible. Driving or commuting to that site from Plaza Libertad should take about 5 minutes, or less. That is, without the traffic jams along the way. I wonder who's responsible for traffic management, hmmm.... Second, once the Mandurriao airport is transformed into a CBD, the city hall would just be across the river. Third, the site is right beside Iloilo River. The river would surely provide a very scenic and refreshing environment. Fourth, that area and right across the river has great potential for development. They could even build a bridge right in front of the city hall towards the future CBD. Nice right? Last, yes, they would need to spend so much of our taxes to rent some space while they rebuild the city hall at its present site. They spent millions when the city council was in Marymart Mall. What more if the mayor's office and all the rest of the offices in city hall? They might 'save' some of their own 'effort' since they remain at plaza libertad, but public funds would suffer in return.
They must plan the building of the new city hall with foresight. They must have long-term considerations. Not simply because it "is more accessible to all [of the present] employees."
Absolutely agree with all things mentioned above.
kirby21 April 12th, 2006, 08:51 PM I'll try to take those in mind when I visit those places in the future ... There's a lot of places listed there that I've been wanting to visit for a long time like the shores of Ajuy and the church and cemetery of San Joaquin.
Welcome Pacific Leopard, I like the descriptions you've made. I hope you don't mind if I incorporate some of them sa Iloilo Blog (http://iloiloonline.blogspot.com/). and na add ko na gali ang Janiuay Cemetery, thanks guid sa submission mo.
@ERIC: ga visit sa blog mo from time to time, namian ko sang mga features mo about sa Aliwan contingents from WV :)
I agree with you 100% ...
More places to visit when in Iloilo. Si Pacific Leopard maayo gid maghatag title .. halong lang basi kopyahon sang iban .. nga daan may iban di plano mag-join sa tagline contest ..(sorry Mars). Gakuha lang ina buylo .. hehe.
kirby21 April 12th, 2006, 08:55 PM Welcome back ferrersky! Yup, I agree with you about the oton church...I am suggesting tani na i-revive na nila...
about Metro ILOILO... I'll just post some more updates, ok?
Meantime, have a blessed week every one....
Tani no .. manami tulukon .. go Oton! Any updates, please post them here, Metro. And I'm joining you and every Ilonggos across the globe as we celebrate the Lenten Season. Have a blessed one, too. :)
JonJon75 April 12th, 2006, 08:58 PM Good evening .. ari gali kamo kagina? Hello Mars, Caloy, JonJon and Daks. Si ferrersky balik naman .. yehoo!
Jon, nice avatar gid. :)
ari pa ko .. on and off sa computer subong. Gabasa-basa lang balita back home.
kirby21 April 12th, 2006, 09:04 PM :runaway: I agree.... pabombo ta about our sentiments... :eek2:
ha ha ha .. dira gid ako sa imo Metro. Dapat Bombo-hon gid ini iya kay ang mga taga-SSC indi magpasugot sang design and site nila. Kibot siguro si Trenas kung ano ang SSC eh. Nano man abi kay daw lipong man ang architect .. basi may kick back sila kung ngaa gusto gid nila dira sa old site? Abi i-ihatag ta aton reklamo sa Zona Libre. Basi pa lang ma-aksyonan nila ini.
kirby21 April 12th, 2006, 09:15 PM I agree. Let's lobby to improve accessibility between these provinces in Panay Island. I want to see 24/7 coach ride from Iloilo to Capiz, Aklan and Antique.
That' okay. Good idea Jon. At least we can travel around Panay past midnight .. hehe. Sa akon lang no, bring back the double decker, mas maayo gid. Besides kadamo buses sa aton and not ruled by only one busliner.
kirby21 April 12th, 2006, 09:17 PM ari pa ko .. on and off sa computer subong. Gabasa-basa lang balita back home.
Ok. No probs. Update us na lang kung may ara. :)
kirby21 April 12th, 2006, 09:19 PM Update ta lang kamo duha kay ako iya, Mission-based gid ako and worked there for almost four years. Right now, damo development sa IMH and damo pa naka-line-up. Sadya gani sila to subong kay damo na PGIs and volunteer nurses. Buhi naman ang hospital ... hihihi. Pirmi ko to gapanawag and damo man kami diri nga taga-Mission sa UK so upadte ta lang kamo. Even Mission doctors are working here sa UK na ... damo na sila docs diri.
IMH ka gali no? Nalipat man ako ah. Glad nga may kuhaan kami balita about sa IMH development. Thanks in advance Mars.
JonJon75 April 12th, 2006, 09:29 PM kabudlay man na kung kisa magbasa, di ko katultol ahehehehe... i guess im getting old na guid ya. kanami, damo na mga middle to high end residential areasa ng ciudad. tani ang safety guid ang ila prioritize pa guid kay ti, its an assurance man na ca mga tawo.
the safer the place, the higher the chances of people feel assured (daw guin rephrase ko lang akon statement ba, ano ni essay?) lol. tani they would show man ca map kung where in where. last time ko nga daan nagpuli guin bago nila iban nga route, nagtalang ci ako. lost in translation gwa ko.
anyways, that is a big improvement to our city. small and compact yet big in all aspects. amo na ya...
Agree, Caloy. More than anything else ang safety sang pumuluyo and visitors alike ang ila tan-awon.
Caloy, ano ang gina-mean mo nga budlay magbasa? sang ano? lol. Sa mga new routes, indi naman ako katultol sang iban. I'll try to ride a jeep magpauli. Isa lang saulado ko hasta subong .. ang biyahe sang jaro-CPu kay sure gid ako nga indi gid iya magbag-o. he he. The rest wala na ko kabalo kung diin naman sila nagatiyog. Trirkan man ko sang una pero few years nga wala ta kapuli or kung makapuli ta may salakyan man, pag-abot sa public vehicles, dula gid ta. Missed ko na magsakay Jaro-CPU. Sang una nagapalumba-anay ka ina sila pick up pasahero. Dumduman mo pa ang Kimberly jeepneys?
Anyhow, any improvement in all sectors are welcome gid for Iloilo. More to come pa tani.

I don't think there's a bid for this one, Mars. Iloilo "was and still is" the Football's hold of our country. I'm to hear nga may academy of football na gali sa aton. Isa na lang kulang, ang stadium pareho dira sa Europa. Kung matabo, okay gid ina nga development sang sports sa Iloilo. But of course, economy muna bag-o sports .. hehe. Basi wala na ta panggasto sa iban nga projects kung puro sports-sports lang tanan.

daw amo gid .. the more, the merrier ah. Ang importante may competitors para indi lang manipulate tanan sang isa ka company. We learned from our mistakes in Energy side .. hope nga indi na ini matabo pa sa iban nga areas of development sang city. There's a lot of advantages kung damo competitors sa market.

amo gid tuod Jon. Si migo ta to sa Hounslow ang boss-boss gid sa mahjongan. lol. Ngaa nauso man ina ang bingo sa aton man? Before sa Manila halos every malls has a bingo area .. I don't know subong. Now sa Iloilo daw nagsunod man ta. Ang SM City may ara? Before sa Gaisano City may ara mo pero mas sikat ang bowling area sang Gaisano City til now.

Oopss .. edit ko lang .. another one pa gali .. Dededo Village in Guam, USA pa gali.

JikJik April 12th, 2006, 10:03 PM I agree. I prefer the one for Molo site. However, are there no other choices? The 9-storey design looks like just any other building. Regarding the 2-floor design, I'm not liking the colours (what's that thing at its facade?). Might be better if it could be a little taller too. Chy, do you have an article that accompanies these pictures?
It might be a nice idea if they could solicit designs from all Ilonggos, perhaps in the form of a contest-just like what they did for the WTC in New York. I think they should search for the best possible design because it will serve as the symbol of the City, its people, and their ideals, for a very long time.
Anyway, these are just proposals right? Hehe.. I hope they come up with something better.
Anyway, here's a pic of the Arroyo fountain now:
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/IAMME00/100_7102.jpg
I haven't seen it spewing water for a very long time. Currently, it's dirty. I think they're not putting enough importance to this fountain. BTW, this fountain serves as Km-0 for Panay Island. :)
Another picture:

the historic and cultural side of the city. the long avenue of JM Basa Street look great with further emphasis of Arroyo's Fountain. Good pics, IAMME.
kirby21 April 12th, 2006, 10:05 PM hi JikJik. Join us (me and Jon) as we explore the many facets of Iloilo. lol. Damo to naga-reklamo sang old site sang bag-o nga city hall. Any suggestions, comments, voilent reactions? :)
JikJik April 12th, 2006, 10:08 PM thanks Kirby. I'm just updating myself from time to time. I'll post my comment later regarding the new city hall controversy. I'm glad JonJon is here with us as well.
JikJik April 12th, 2006, 10:13 PM New City Hall likely to remain in its present site

(from: The News Today online
here's the link: http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/04/10/new.city.hall.likely.to.remain.in.its.present.site.html)
More than anything else, I don't like the idea of having our new city hall in the present site. Aside from a very limited space, the traffic within the city area is too much to bear especially during rush hours where all the public and private vehicles are in chaos. I don't find any reason why Molo site did not make it since it is very ideal for everyone especially to those business people where time is of great importance. I'm sure with this decision, people in Iloilo will starts clamouring of the what's and why's of the new city hall.
JonJon75 April 12th, 2006, 10:17 PM Welcome Jik. We're sort of lingering "more" around the forum today. :) . Few issues arising from the new city hall, etc aside from good news posted in previous pages makes a day for Iloilo. Hope to see you here more often. Cheers!

Robinson's Iloilo in a different angle. Impressive feature of the biggest Robinson's outside MM.

Great pics. Is Robinson's doing well in Iloilo? I haven't heard much about it except for more workshops, art galleries/displays, etc held in the said mall. Seems Robinson is comfortable in the city lately amidst few meters away from other bid malls in city proper area.
JikJik April 12th, 2006, 10:29 PM I hope this doesn't mean we have to settle for this design...:ohno: :ohno:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/chymera00/iloilocitypics/CityHallmolo.jpg
The Plaza Libertad site for me is okay, but if we do need a high-rise building, we also need a much better design. It's sad that only 25 people are involved in deciding where to locate the New City Hall.:(
Sayang rin yung 50M na ginastos sa Molo site. That is a very LARGE amount considering it was during the time of Malabor. And to think it was only for the piles... and the Molo design is only 2 floors?
I agree with all the comments written above. The design is ridiculous. I wonder how they came up with such proposal. Remember that the city hall should be a symbol of our city's greatness yet they opted to this vertical box for the reason of what? Accessible to its employees? Why? Are all present employees of Iloilo City Hall living in a nearby Fort San Pedro? It's hard to be judgmental but looks like there has been an agreement already between the contractor and the city hall people.
kirby21 April 12th, 2006, 10:33 PM It's RC 5th Avenue. Haven't been inside, but they seem to sell clothes. There also seems to be a small restauant beside it.
Thanks IAMME. No idea at all. Ano ang restaurant sa sulod? I'm trying my best to imagine whilst passing along that road from St Paul's pero indi ko gid ma-picture out. Anyway, thank you so much. :)
JikJik April 12th, 2006, 10:37 PM Beautiful Cabatuan ! Seen the church before but had no luck of looking the interior part. Wish to visit it one day.
Me, too, Wecky. Looks lovely indeed. Maybe it's high time to roam around the province. I guess Iloilo has so much to offer to tourists, moreso with her churches sprawling along its vast arable land.
JikJik April 12th, 2006, 10:42 PM Kirby, Chymera and the rest .. sa votation sang new Iloilo City Hall .. I think, wala ako iboto ... they're both ugly in my sight .. hihihi .. :jk: . The design/s is not noteworthy at all. Wala dating. Looks like the building I used to know ang second design niya :). Pwede change na lang nila? Dapat iconic ang dating. Inang pag may makakita bala mahambal dayon nga "Iloilo" ina siya. Mayor Gerry, baka pwede kuha na lang tayo ng ibang architect.. :)
I share the sentiment, Mars. Maybe they should start looking for another architect for our new city hall in the next few days. Even in pictures, etc .. it could never impressed anybody. It's just like one of the many "common" buildings in the city. It never commands distinction and artistry. Looks like they're too keen to build it asap and that's all.
JikJik April 12th, 2006, 10:47 PM That's only a few meters away beside Gaisano City in Lapaz. It's a relatively new Iloilo Scholastic Academy campus.
Anyway, so much for the Arroyo fountain, here's a closer angle. :)
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/IAMME00/000_0348e.jpg
I read somewhere that these women in the fountain were originally nude. They clothed them after some nuns in the city protested.
Women in nude? And protesting nuns? hmm .. what a combination! Actually, the fountain is really iconic. If it is well-preserved and well-managed, that fountain is another symbol our city can be proud of. It symbolizes the grand era of the past. It's very historical in nature. It could be turned into a tourist magnet once it become more functional than its present status.
JonJon75 April 12th, 2006, 10:52 PM daw amo gid .. the more, the merrier ah. Ang importante may competitors para indi lang manipulate tanan sang isa ka company. We learned from our mistakes in Energy side .. hope nga indi na ini matabo pa sa iban nga areas of development sang city. There's a lot of advantages kung damo competitors sa market.
Amo gid Jon. At least damo ta di pili-an. Anyway, we are learning and it's all that matters. Tani wala na sang masunod sa natabo sa PECO. It's the worst thing that ever happened in Iloilo City. Btw, any news regarding the energy dep't of Iloilo? Are they allowing independent energy provider/s to invest in the city?
JikJik April 12th, 2006, 10:56 PM Capitol lines up activities
for 105th Semana sang Iloilo
another national and provincial convention for Iloilo in the making ... 5th one for this year. Have a good day to all! :)
no plans of holding a Dinagyang-like festival to coincide with the Semana sang Iloilo? Looks like the province is tailing behind with promotion compare to the city of Iloilo. Iloilo Province has so much to offer like its city counterpart. I wish Gov Tupas will develop this occasion into a momentous one like holding a Semana sang Iloilo Festival. I'm sure it's really worth it.
JikJik April 12th, 2006, 11:03 PM What happened to Passi's pineapple industry? and also to Iloilo's prawn industry? to Guimara's Cashew industry?
Iloilo used to have a lot of primary crops for export. What to all of these?
Pineapple industry in Passi City is still thriving til today. You can still buy pineaplle in a low cost plus Passi City started producing Pineapple Juices courtesy of KLT Processing Plant located within the area.
Prawn industry? I haven't heard much about it lately. I think Iloilo's more concern with its milkfish industry than the prawn. Prawn and other seafoods industry are very much of a Roxas City and Capiz development since they are bidding to become the Seafood Capital of the country.
Cashew industry in Guimaras on the other hand is mostly related to Monks selling it for pasalubong purposes. I'm sure they are producing more Cashew's the any province in Western Visayas however, Guimaras agricultural drive is mainly focused in Mangoes processing and production.
kirby21 April 12th, 2006, 11:08 PM the historic and cultural side of the city. the long avenue of JM Basa Street look great with further emphasis of Arroyo's Fountain. Good pics, IAMME.
I agree Jik. I hope they'll reconsider the idea and allocate enough funds to make it more functional. It's a good boost for our tourism industry back home.
JikJik April 12th, 2006, 11:13 PM http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i149/ericd001/molo-3.jpg
Pacific called it "Her Majesty". I guess the title is just appropriate for Molo Church (St Ann's Cathedral) since all saints lining the hallway of the church are female. daunting! or should I say haunted. Old cemeteries look very serene and idle .. very chilly and creepy even in photos. Btw, thank you so much for sharing it with us.
JikJik April 12th, 2006, 11:22 PM Casa Fiametta in Barotac Nuevo was originally a hacienda owned by the Lopezes. It was transformed into a mini-park with amenities for horseriding, get-together, corporate meetings, etc and to rival the existence of RACSO'S and GARIN FARM in Guimbal. I haven't been to Casa Fiametta myself but I've heard a lot of it lately. I wish to visit the place one day. Okay man ila horse trainers, Mars?
That's right. it was once a Lopez-owned hacienda turned into park/leisure area. Casa Fiametta is lovely. I'll have a look around the feature article about Casa Fiametta and I'll post it here later.
Racsos Woodland on the otherhand is already a children well-loved park today since it boost itself with mini-zoo and a swimming pool for small conventions, etc. I've been there once and I salute Garin for its love for animals and nature.
sandrin April 13th, 2006, 04:11 AM Biotech course to initiate LGU capability towards dev't innovations
A special course on biotechnology for local chief executives will be offered soon by the government.
As part of the capability building of the Department of Agriculture (DA), the local chief executives and concerned agricultural officers as partner of the national government towards development, need capability building to educate them of the vast potential and benefits of modern biotechnology to improve agricultural production and uplift the living condition of farmers and the rural poor, the DA press report disclosed.
A Memorandum of Agreement for the development of the training modules was signed recently between the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) and J. Burgos Media Services. ISAAA Director Randy Hautea and J. Burgos Media Services Executive Director Edith Burgos who was represented by J.Burgos Media Services and General Manager Joel Paredes signed the MOA during simple rites at the ISAAA office inside the University of the Philippines-Los Banos College, Laguna.
The MOA signing is an offshoot of the Memorandum of Understanding on Biotechnology Information Education and Technology Exchange Cooperation signed on July 1, 2005, a partnership committed to building the capabilities of LGUs in applying biotechnology for local development. Under the MOA, the DA through the capability building component on the Biotechnology Program will provide technical assistance and logistical support for training of the local government officials and agricultural and planning officers.
At the local level, RTD Larry Nacionales of DA VI when asked about the said special course on biotechnology, said that "we are already behind from other countries because they are already using such technology, amo ina ang trend subong, and the benefits will naturally be realized if our farmers are adopting the technology."

here's INMARSATs building in london

a very simple building yet worth a 2nd look

I'm against monopoly as well .. dapat may kumpetensiya gid. Just like any other businesses in Iloilo City and Iloilo Province, may ara gid counterpart ang every business. Glad to note that we are learning and I hope indi na maliwat ini. Let's continue our clamour to let new investors in energy sectors invest in the city. PECO should learn a lesson from all of us Ilonggos as well.
kirby21 April 13th, 2006, 11:13 PM Capitol asks ERC blessing
to source power from NPC
By GEROME DALIPE IV
ILOILO – The provincial government asked the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to allow the Capitol to directly get power from the National Power Corporation (NPC).
In a seven-page petition, the Capitol cited Republic Act 6395 (an Act Revising the Charter of the National Power Corp.) and Republic Act 9136 (Electric Power Reform Act of 2001 or the EPIRA).
Foreseeing huge savings, the Capitol has been pushing for the operation of its P13-million power substation. It plans to source power for the substation from NPC via the Philippine Foremost Milling Company located at the back of the Capitol building which has been granted permit by ERC to directly get power from NPC.
The plan is for the Capitol to make use of Philippine Foremost’s transmission line connected to NPC.
The Iloilo provincial government cited the reliability and lower rates being offered by the NPC.
However, Panay Electric Company (PECO) is objecting to the plan of the Capitol.
“PECO is incapable or unwilling to match the reliability and rates of the NPC,” the capitol reasoned out.
Edmund Afzelius, senior vice-president for operations of PECO, said the seat of the provincial government is within the franchise area of PECO.
Afzelius said if Capitol will directly source electric power from NPC, it would disrupt the market of PECO thus, violating the vested right of the electric firm to supply power to the city.
PECO also warned that if the Capitol pursues its plan to install a power sub-station, it would violate Republic Act 9163 (Epira Law) because the connection will result to retail competition and open access to electricity.
Based on record, the Capitol pays about P977,843 monthly electric bill to PECO.
However, it could save up to P640,793 in case it would get its power source direct from NPC.

wecky April 14th, 2006, 12:45 AM New City Hall likely to remain in its present site
By Maricar M. Calubiran
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/04/10/new.city.hall.likely.to.remain.in.its.present.site.html
What do you think guys? Daw kalabo sang rason nila nga mas accessible daw ang old site kesa sa proposed molo site. Another thing, kun mag vacate na sila when the construction starts, ma renta na naman sila temporary offices like sa ginhimo nila last time sa marymart mall...pila naman na ka milyones ang gastohon sa renta ayhan...if they will opt to construct on another site, it is much better coz they will just continue using the old cityhall building until the new building is completed... I think we should better get Jed Mabilog in this site ASAP para mabasahan ya man ang aton sintemento :)
my choice is a big NO. Just try another architect, I guess. Besides, city hall in the old site seems not a good choice at all.
wecky April 14th, 2006, 12:50 AM More than anything else, I don't like the idea of having our new city hall in the present site. Aside from a very limited space, the traffic within the city area is too much to bear especially during rush hours where all the public and private vehicles are in chaos. really eerie, Pacific ... it's a legend of its own .. hehehe.
wecky April 14th, 2006, 01:07 AM I couldn't get over this.
Not simply because it "is more accessible to all [of the present] employees."
thanks for sharing the map with us, IAMME. Hopefully they'll release further details regarding the new city hall in the next few days.

From extreme to non-extreme engineering
Cebu Megadome Design Contest 2003
crowd favorite "The Sailboat"

unfortunately, it's way too expensive to build such.
winning entry "The Spinning Disc"
designed by Architect A Medalla

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/cebupics/megadome/small/Megadome02.jpg
Cebu Province has approved P250M budget for the Megadome in 2004 but was caught in political storm. the provincial board opposition blocked the project. it was put on hold until President Gloria Arroyo recently announced ASEAN Summit to be held in Cebu. the architect needed to modify the design to make it ideal for conventions. the megadome was originally designed as a sports arena and entertainment venue (like the Araneta Coliseum). with less than a year before the summit, Cebu province gave up the winning design for the megadome due to time constraints and replaced with something fit for conventions.
the P370M Cebu International Convention Center is now under construction, expected to be completed by November, a month before the ASEAN Summit. and it doesnt look extreme no more. :(
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/cebupics/megadome/cicc_render.jpg
Designed by Architect Guanzon
Make of main material to be used: Structural steel
Glass and Alluminum metal cladding
Among the features of the CICC is the glass at the middle of the roof with a beam holding it, which looks like an inverted C.
Architect Guanzon said this will give the CICC an element distinct from other structures.
Underneath the glass roof is a big lobby that would look like it is “floating” because of a water effect that will surround it.
____________________________________________
I heard thru the grapevine that the original Megadome project will still be built but this time, it's gonna be in South Road Properties, the newest central business district of Cebu. Cebu City Mayor Tom Osmeña earlier offered a free lot on SRP for the Megadome. we'll see.

Think they're doing well, Jik. Btw, amo man ina ang natalupangdan ko. More exhibits, phot displays, shows, etc ang ginahiwat sa Robinson's Iloilo lately. They're even battling head on head with SM City sa number sang shows nga gina-cater nila. Hope Robinson's will continue its plan for further expansion. Before may ara plan to extend it and build a galleria suites like in Manila. On hold lang tanan at the moment. I would loved to see Robinson's Iloilo to have a hotel of its own tupad niya as planned.

amo gid tuod Jon. Before sa Gaisano City may ara mo pero mas sikat ang bowling area sang Gaisano City til now.
hihihi ... may bingo man gani diri. Btw, ano ini part pa sang proposal for the new city hall? From Bingo to Mahjong .. okay man ina. Aga pa may nagasinggit na nga joker eye.. hihihi.
Sa provincial capitol naman, they have TEDS resto sa ground floor. Idon't know kung may ara panga iban nga resto dra. But it's a good move. They can build a mini-foodcourt dugang pa sa renta and bulig pa sa aton sa ciudad.
kirby21 April 14th, 2006, 03:03 PM Lovely! More to come pa tani. I hope Iloilo will increase its road networking more though we're all leading across the region. Damo pa minucipalities, baranggays, etc nga wala good access to their town centers and to the city. I'm glad slowly we are developing new roads for easier transportation of goods across the province.
I agree Jon. Mas damo dalan mas dasig ang travel time. Hopefully they'll continue expanding and increasing road networks in Iloilo .. and from Iloilo to other provinces of Panay. Iloilo-Capiz and Iloilo-Antique road networks should be the main focus of the RDC.
marsleg April 14th, 2006, 03:18 PM :runaway:
ha ha ha .. dira gid ako sa imo Metro. Dapat Bombo-hon gid ini iya kay ang mga taga-SSC indi magpasugot sang design and site nila. Kibot siguro si Trenas kung ano ang SSC eh. Nano man abi kay daw lipong man ang architect .. basi may kick back sila kung ngaa gusto gid nila dira sa old site? Abi i-ihatag ta aton reklamo sa Zona Libre. Basi pa lang ma-aksyonan nila ini.
hihihi .. pa-Bombo gid dayon para ma-aksyonan. Basi magbugtaw man ang Coscuella and Associates nga ini. Wala abi online suggestions mo .. tani amo gid ini akon i-suggest:
http://www.artofthestate.co.uk/photos/london_city_hall.jpg
LONDON CITY HALL
ari iya gin-planohan gid maayo .. wala ginadali-an. Impressive building with stunning background.
marsleg April 14th, 2006, 03:24 PM any pics of passi city hall? Abi post man di .. basi mas maayo pa tulukon ang new city hall sang passi compare sa new design sang new iloilo city hall. Even ang Guimbal municipal hall mas promising pa gani tulukon.
kirby21 April 14th, 2006, 03:31 PM like that design Whyte .. anything related to London manami gid iya. lol. Joke lang po. Any design would do huwag lang 'yong naunang pinost dito kay sapagka law-ay gid iya. :) :bash:
REPOST ko, Mars. lol. I'm sure we have the same sentiments. Tan-awa lang mga architecture diri sa UK. Very impressive. As in every building is an iconic in its own right.
Anyway, let's just wait and see in next few months kung ano gid man ang definite plan/s for the new Iloilo City Hall. By that time, we can picture out sang mangin itsura sang projects nga ini. :)
kirby21 April 14th, 2006, 03:35 PM Pineapple industry in Passi City is still thriving til today.
Thanks for more infos, Jik. Very limited idea gid when it comes to the industrial side of the province. Cheers! :)

JonJon75 April 14th, 2006, 09:48 PM That's right. it was once a Lopez-owned hacienda turned into park/leisure area.
I love to read a feature about it. Wecky told me that you need to book a slot when you go there. May time scheds pa ang mga kabayo dayon. The only place you've mentioned above kung diin ako nakakadto is Racsos Woodland. I loved the place. Loved those animals kapin pa ang mga collection of fishes nila. Tani may Aquarium ipatindog sa aton no? Seafdec Aqua Display is not too accessible for public viewing. :)
JonJon75 April 14th, 2006, 09:51 PM Biotech course to initiate LGU capability towards dev't innovations
Thanks for the info Sandrin. Cheers!

JikJik April 15th, 2006, 04:00 AM A Blessed Weekend for both of you and to the rest of forumers here.
JikJik April 15th, 2006, 04:04 AM I agree Jik. I hope they'll reconsider the idea and allocate enough funds to make it more functional. It's a good boost for our tourism industry back home.
Wishing same thing, too, Kirby. It would be nice seeing Arroyo's Fountain in full bloom once again.
JikJik April 15th, 2006, 04:06 AM re:CITY HALL
* when was the bidding done?years ago pa? o was there any bidding
* IMO we need a modern city hall to usher in the future of the city.teh designer obviously is stucked in the 60's :D
here's INMARSATs building in london
http://conferences.inmarsat.com/images/rooms/inmarsat_med_2.jpg
a very simple building yet worth a 2nd look
* we dont need to look abroad for modern designs.we have pretty good building designs in the country.why should the design be stucked in the 60's with that kind of design.
hahahaha
obvious ang init sang ulo sa design sang city hall :D
Looks simple indeed yet magnificient in nature.
JikJik April 15th, 2006, 04:16 AM Capitol asks ERC blessing
to source power from NPC
(from: Panay News
link: http://www.panaynews.com.ph/news2.htm)
Can we see this happening soon? If ever it will, we still have to open the energy supply of the city and province to other interested investors. We need to be cautioned this time. It happened once, there's a big chance it will happen again in the future. After the scam few months ago, the news about the power supply died down drastically. What happens next? We're left in limbo again.
JonJon75 April 15th, 2006, 04:20 AM A Blessed Weekend for both of you and to the rest of forumers here.
And you, too, Jik. Rest yata ang Iloilo and Pilipinas Forumers due to Holy Week. Damo nagapamalandong subong.
kirby21 April 15th, 2006, 04:23 AM A Blessed Weekend for both of you and to the rest of forumers here.
A Blessed Weekend to you, too. :angel1:
JikJik April 15th, 2006, 04:31 AM Well said Jik. I agree with you all the way .. hehehe.
Thank you Wecky. It's just a spur-of-the-moment idea. But it's helpful and with sense, I guess. Maybe people from city and provincial offices will be reading some of our suggestions here. More than anything else, we have to have a good say since we are Ilonggos and we're the one paying taxes in Iloilo, not anyone else.
JikJik April 15th, 2006, 04:38 AM Semana Sang Iloilo should also showcase the revelry of the province ..dapat may ara man siya festival-like activities to concur with the occasion like Dinagyang. I'm sure a gathering of all festivals in the province is the best option gid nga matabo. I'm sure it could rival Dinagyang celebration at some point.
That's an idea. It's nice to see gathering of all Iloilo festivals in one occasion. It will surely boost the tourism bid of the province apart from its city's counterpart, Dinagyang.
JikJik April 15th, 2006, 04:41 AM really eerie, Pacific ... it's a legend of its own .. hehehe.
it's classic more than eerie, Weck. I'm sure the stones and tombs in site are way back centuries old. It's a touch of a certain era that Ilonggos will always be proud of.
JikJik April 15th, 2006, 04:52 AM * mas manami pa ang mga design sang mga forum members diri kay sa design sang kuskusella and associates :D
Who's Kuskusella (Coscuella)? Is it the same group who plans the new provincial capitol? The new Provincial Capitol looks stunning due to glasses used, etc. It's very modern in nature yet the building remains plain and simple, too. In as much as I like the modern design of the new Iloilo Provincial Capitol, I still feel that it doesn't complement several architectures of the old and historical city. Just try looking around the area where it belongs .. the old provincial capitol, old rehab center, etc. Anyway, it's just me all along .. still loving the old, historical and cultural city of Iloilo.
JikJik April 15th, 2006, 05:00 AM Think they're doing well, Jik.
It would be much, much better if another mall in the city could compete with SM. Right now, SM rules Iloilo's retail industry whether we like it or not. Soon, another SM store will open in Jaro district, making it four in a row. Although Iloilo Supermart is a big force too when it comes to retailing, they're thrust is more into groceries rather than anything else. Right now, only Robinson is its closest rival on a whole department area since Gaisano is definitely not an Ilonggo choice by far. I hope MaryMart will build its own department store in the future.
JonJon75 April 15th, 2006, 05:05 AM Can we see this happening soon? If ever it will, we still have to open the energy supply of the city and province to other interested investors. I agree Jik. Nadula na ang balita. Na-resolve siya on its own na lang BUT I guess there's a political play about this issue. No further news noted about Iloilo's energy sector lately. Wala man gani mabal-i ang decision for PECO. I'm sure it's a scam .. dapat indi naton palagpason ang bagay nga ini.
JonJon75 April 15th, 2006, 05:06 AM Looks simple indeed yet magnificient in nature.
as always.
JikJik April 15th, 2006, 05:30 AM I agree Jon. Mas damo dalan mas dasig ang travel time. Hopefully they'll continue expanding and increasing road networks in Iloilo .. and from Iloilo to other provinces of Panay. Iloilo-Capiz and Iloilo-Antique road networks should be the main focus of the RDC.
I agree with this. I think we need more road networking more than anything else. This will help to shortcut travelling time from all provinces in Panay Island and to the rest of Iloilo province. Moreso, transporting of goods will be more accessible for our farmer kasimanwas.

I think we all have limited access to this resources, Kirby. Unless we have all the infos in our hands then we can definitely compare stats. I guess we still based our data from infos coming from online paper and some government agencies website, which i believe is not updated all the time. anyhow, it's nice to know some things going on in our province and city.

I hope so, too. MaryMart Mall, the Atrium, and all Iloilo Supermarkets are all in the same roof or company I guess. I'm not so sure about this Jik but I'll inquire na lang.

Pacific_leopard April 15th, 2006, 05:53 AM it's classic more than eerie, Weck. I'm sure the stones and tombs in site are way back centuries old. It's a touch of a certain era that Ilonggos will always be proud of.
no... actually it was once the country's most beautiful cemetery... coz nami guid man siya tani... galing... ang mga tombstones... naglalapta everywhere... so naguba ang beauty niya... cabatuan cemetery gani was nothing compared to Janiuay, but restoration really has a great impact on something... so subong, ang Cabatuan Cemetery ang "most beautiful" kay gin restore gid siya sang parokya and the local government... i was disapointed gani... if nadevelop ang cemetery sang Janiuay... basi madala pana siya sa UNESCO world heritage site(sigh!)....

such a wonderful description of every church in town. Keep them coming, Pacific. I'm sure your inclination will be more on churches and history. it's great though. Something we can always be proud of, time and time again.

.... pareho man lang sa iban na towns... but my specialties guid each towns sang Iloilo eh... this makes Iloilo a great province... "MAY ORIGINALITY KITA YA!" hahahaha
Pacific_leopard April 15th, 2006, 05:58 AM daw sa amo gid pacific. it's stunning and magnificient. I like the descriptions though .. "her majesty". :)
Thanks... she really deserves it. Favorite ko siya daan sa tanan...hehe
kirby21 April 15th, 2006, 05:58 AM I agree with this. I think we need more road networking more than anything else. This will help to shortcut travelling time from all provinces in Panay Island and to the rest of Iloilo province. Moreso, transporting of goods will be more accessible for our farmer kasimanwas.
that's right. Transportation and communication are two of the vital infras for development. Towns around the city started having their own telecommunications company. PLDT is expanding and so with Globe telecom. I'm sure few years time, the whole of Iloilo Province will be connected by wire. I wish to see more roads, too, that connects every towns and cities of Iloilo and other provinces of panay island. We may also include bridge connecting Iloilo and Guimaras in the future (once more!)
kirby21 April 15th, 2006, 06:01 AM I think we all have limited access to this resources, Kirby. Unless we have all the infos in our hands then we can definitely compare stats. I guess we still based our data from infos coming from online paper and some government agencies website, which i believe is not updated all the time. anyhow, it's nice to know some things going on in our province and city.
It's okay. At least we're trying to get infos straight here. Hopefully Iloilo province and city websites will be updated soon. It's vital for promotion and progress for sure. :)
Pacific_leopard April 15th, 2006, 06:01 AM he he. The usual case Pacific. A busy weekend for you, I'm sure.

Thank you, pacific. I'm glad to hear that restoration is underway. It's beautiful indeed. No question about it. I wish to see Janiuay Cemetery pics, too, one day.
Btw, any development ongoing in Cabatuan? I'm sure Cabatuan will be more prosperous as a municipality since bigger portion of Iloilo Airport is located in this town.
JikJik April 15th, 2006, 06:12 AM I hope so, too. MaryMart Mall, the Atrium, and all Iloilo Supermarkets are all in the same roof or company I guess. I'm not so sure about this Jik but I'll inquire na lang.
Really? Wow. I have no idea with the owner, etc. They're just as ordinary as anybody back home. I hope one day, they expand more and create a bigger mall than SM City. Any mall bigger than SM City Iloilo will surely get Ilonggo's attention. It's a size's competition nowadays lest displays or renters of course.

they should focus more on this issue to propel/hasten development. It's good to travel around Panay Island with well-paved roads.
JonJon75 April 15th, 2006, 06:18 AM sa Miag-ao and Taytay Boni... hehe...wala nami nga taytay sa cabatuan... ang Steel Bridge to my humps pa... ti pataas taas tumbo sa jeep ni kon maglabay ka to... hehehe
Thank you for info Pacific. wala ko kabalo sina .. he he. Is it the same old steel bridge in Guimbal you're talking about? Amo ina siya?

I used to like it too. But lately (should I say before coming here in UK), I attended more masses in Jaro cathedral and San Jose in Plaza Libertad. But yes, Molo Church in physical structure is the most beautiful of them all. :)

Pacific_leopard April 15th, 2006, 06:30 AM by the way, about Ilonggo Tourism, compared to that of Negros, they really have a way on developing their resources into tourist magnets... why not Iloilo. I visited Mambukal Once(Murcia, Neg. Occ.) and i really love the place, there is a boating lagoon, a pool, a natural sulfur pool, environmental trail and picnic gazebos under gigantic trees... then i just learned that it is owned and managed by the local government! Iloilo too has many good spots for these. why not develop the Magroove swaps near Iloilo River into a park like that of New York(Central Park) and Lambunao's Tinagong Dagat is a beautiful place to be developed. Some Places in the Philippines reached the top through Tourism(Subic and Aklan)....

Iloilo is a province of the Philippines located in the Western Visayas region. Its capital is Iloilo City and is located at the southeast portion of Panay island, bordering Antique to the west and Capiz to the north. Just off Iloilo's southeast coast is the island-province of Guimaras and across Panay Gulf and Guimaras Strait is Negros Occidental.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/chymera00/iloilocitypics/IloiloLocation.jpg
Located 238 statute miles from Manila, Iloilo is the gateway of the Western Visayas Region. The province comprises the southeastern part of Panay Island. Iloilo is 55 minutes by plane from Manila. Should you opt to go by sea, Sulpicio Lines, Negros Navigation and Aboitiz have ships plying from Manila (19 hours).
Natural boundaries, such as mountain ranges with peaks as high as 7,000 ft., lie between Iloilo and Antique on the west and Capiz on the north. Mainland Iloilo is composed of plain interspersed with upland portions. The capital, Iloilo City, rests between the Iloilo and Batino rivers which from the angle of a nose. This location is the root of the province's old name, ilong-ilong which means "noselike".

Iloilo province, and its beautiful city, ranks as one of the country's foremost centers of culture, industry and trade. Located on the southwestern tip of Panay Island between the Iloilo River and the Guimara Strait, its attributes as the repository of architectural and artistic legacies, as the promising point of progress in aquaculture, and as a trove of unexplored tourist attractions give it an allure so bewitching as not to be missed.

Iloilo is the cradle of early Philippine civilization. The telltale marks of such cultural influences live on in the century-old houses, the period churches, the colorful festivals, and in the enterprising bloodline of its people. Iloilo has a glorious past as the land's great sugarbowl and the locale of the haciendas of the old rich - whose scions and daughters turned down the centuries into the dons and donas of powerful economic dynasties.

Some of the testimonies to this awesome heritage are the churches. Nowhere else can church tours prove so rewarding. The Miag-ao Fortress Church is a grand example of a medieval bastion church with onrnate floral designs on the facade; another colossal monument is the San Joaquin Church and cemetery known for its bas relief featuring the Castilian and Moorish wars, while its cemetery is picturesque for its hexagonal chapel with rose windows and twin-tiered balustrades that lead to its entrance; meanwhile, three staircases lead to the historic rock; whereas the Rennaissance - inspired Molo Church and orphanage, the Asilo de Molo, are unique for their architecture as well as for a rare product, hand-embroidered barong Pilipino in pina cloth; the Pavia Church is a red brick and coral windows cases and rightfully deserves a place in one's travelogue. These churches are no farther than two hours' distance from each other.

Iloilo province is primarily the commercial and trade center of Western Visayas, with commercial, industrial development and rural banks, financial and investment houses, insurance companies, and realestate agencies and developers. Nevertheless, agriculture is the province's main source of livelihood. In fact, Iloilo's production of rice, sugar and mango has made it one of the country's top agricultural producers.

The city's population represents a big manpower pool and a growing consumer market. Purchasing power is generally high given the favorable income distribution in Iloilo. Assuring the business sector of a steady supply of multi-skilled manpower are the city's 30 tertiary schools and 6 universities.

Iloilo's is a byword for its famous festival - the Dinagyang, a local mardigras. Held every January in honor of the Infant Jesus, the festival is a major tourist attraction.

Another even Iloilo is known for is the Paraw Regatta. Which is participated in by local and foreign sportsmen.

there are few developments... but i guess sta. barbara will have more advantages though, the entrance is located in sta. barbara so restaurants and department stores and subdivisions are being built there now... Cabatuan is still the same though... but Tiring (also in Cabatuan) isn't... it's rapidly developing...

tourism in Iloilo is not a priority in the past .. guess we are still groping on how to market our province and city to tourists, etc. We're slowly doing it and I'm sure we'll reach Aklan's status in due time. If you have noticed, only recently when they start considering cultural and historical advantage of the city to boost tourism industry. We're going there .. slowly but surely.

Tani may Aquarium ipatindog sa aton no? Seafdec Aqua Display is not too accessible for public viewing. :)

Compared with the other churches in the city, Mandurriao's is the most unpopular ... It's not as old and iconic as the other churches.
But it looks good man, but not as impressive as the rest.

I agree ... Its just recently that the local gov't got serious with developing Iloilo's tourism industry, slowly but surely... Aside from what you've mentioned Bucari in Leon also has the potential to be Iloilo's little Baguio.

Nice titles ... I'll expand this one with pictures and more descriptions later
Compared with the other churches in the city, Mandurriao's is the most unpopular ... It's not as old and iconic as the other churches.
But it looks good man, but not as impressive as the rest.

Mayu ka pa, I really wanted to go up a hill or something but people were to busy to come with me ... I spent the whole holy week at home na lang .... and I haven't eaten for 3 days (salad lang kag burger) because isda pirmi sud-an sa balay and nasum-odan na ko :D
I agree ... Its just recently that the local gov't got serious with developing Iloilo's tourism industry, slowly but surely... Aside from what you've mentioned Bucari in Leon also has the potential to be Iloilo's little Baguio.
actually ako man lang gani isa nagsaka sa hill.... nagsalakit tiil ko kay ang alagyan damo tawo... but the view was very spectacular.... mayo kapa salad lang kag burger... ok lang na... better spend the entire lent season meditating...

Iloilo is strategically located at the center of the country’s archipelago. This probably one of the reasons why you could find Ilonggos in different parts of the country. They could go south and settle in Mindanao. The could go east and establish Ilonggo-speaking areas in islands like Leyte. They could go west and be an investor in Cebu. And they could go north and join the fast paced life of Manileños. While some Ilonggos spread their influence all over the country. Others bring home the experiences they’ve had from other places and make their own culture richer than ever before. One proof that such two events have happened before is the variety of Ilonggo churches.
Some Iloilo churches receive distinct honor. The Miag-ao Church, which was built in 1786, was named as a national landmark in 1973. This church is also included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The Jaro Cathedral is where the seat of the Jaro Archbisphoric is located, This seat takes care of Catholic Christians in the whole expanse of Western Visayas.
Some Iloilo churches boast of the Ilonggo’s prowess in the architectural arts. The Molo Church, located about three kilometers away from heart of the city, has designs that reflect the Gothic and Rennaissance period of art. It was completed in the 1800s. The Guimbal Church is a yellow sandstone church which was built by Father Campos. The Cabatuan Church has a neo-classical design and it was built in the 1880s. And the Pavia Church is a red brick church built along the lines of the Byzantine style.
Some churches of Iloilo were also involved in revolutionary or war activities. For example, the already mentioned Pavia Church was used by Japanese soldiers as a garrison. From this church, they launch guerilla raids against Filipinos and Americans.
Another neo-classical church involved in a revolution was the Sta. Barbara Church. In the Christmas of 1898, General Martin Delgado, of the Visayan revolutionary government, convened a junta in this church to raise the first cry of revolution of Iloilo against Spain.
The San Joaquin church exhibits a sculpture relief that portrays the historic battle between the Christians of Spain and the Moors of Morocco. This battle occurred in Tetuan in 1859, when Filipinos still fought side by side with Spanish soldiers.
Majority of the churches we described here are accessible via the jeepney transport. If you wanted to visit several of them during the day, you may become a bit more adventurous and try the local routes.

Molo Church - "A church of beauty and elegance. The castle-like church with spires that outgrows tall tress and buildings"

It is also known to be a feminist church because of the two rows of sixteen female saints line on both sides of the altar. It is also known to be a feminist church because of the two rows of sixteen female saints line on both sides of the altar. Molo church is very sturdy and has survived fires, earthquakes, and artillery barrages in 1945.
Jaro Cathedral - "A neo-gothic church of miracles. It imposes cleanliness, balance and simplicity."
http://misheli.image.pbase.com/v3/53/538353/1/51071703.Church.jpg
The Jaro Cathedral was built in 1864, the year the district was named a diocese by Pope Pius the IX, by order of His Grace Mariano Cuartero, first bishop of Jaro. A high point in the history of the cathedral was the visit of Pope John Paul VI, conducting a mass in 1982. He set a crown upon the Lady of the Candles, and declared it the Patroness of the Western Visayas.
La Paz Church - "Neoclassic Church with an inspiring aura."
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/3423/1224/400/lapaz_church1.jpg
La Paz, called Lobo, Llaunon or Ilawood, then Iznart after Gov. Manuel Iznart, was a newly established as a parish in 1868. In 1847, Fr. Cándido Gonzáles built a temporary church and convento of wood, bricks and tabique pampango. The present church was constructed from 1870-74. The church is a squat and less elegant version of the San José church in Iloilo. Neoclassic features, and rustication stand in sharp contrast to the bricks used in the church. Two engaged columns supporting a triangular pediment bear the date 1970, apparently recent additions.
San Jose Church - "Its facade is described as friendly and youthful."
http://static.flickr.com/35/97905210_bbdd0cf71b.jpg?v=0
The first church in Iloilo was built by the Jesuits around 1607 to serve the needs of the military stationed in Punta, as Iloilo was then called. However, on 29 April 1617, the Augustinians established San José, a house of the order. During World War II, the church was saved from being bombed by the Americans after they received information that Japanese were not holed in the church as they were previously informed. Between 1980-82 the church was renovated, a new marble floor was laid, under the direction of poet-writer, Fr. Gilbert Centina. San José is one of the few parish in the Philippines still under the Augustinians.

Panay and Iloilo:
The Allure of a Dowager
The roughly triangular island of Panay, comprising 11, 515 square kilometers, is divided by two cordilleras. One running north-south separates the Antique province from the rest of the island. Its highest peak Mount Madja-as is 2117 meters tall. North of Antique's capital San Jose de Buenavista, another range runs northeast ending in the uplands separating Capiz and Aklan in the north from Iloilo in the south. This cordillera's highest peak is Mount Agudo at 834 meters.
The Hiligaynon language is spoken in the coastal areas, with dialect variations called Capiznon, Antiqueño and Ilongo. A more ancient form of Hiligaynon called Karay-a or Kinaray-a is spoken in the interior, especially in Panay uplands. Aklan has its own language, Akeanon or Aklanon. Two important minority groups occupy the mountainous areas at Tapaz and Passi: these are the dark-skinned Ati (related to the Luzon Ayta) and the Panayanon Bukidnon. Another group called Mundo (corrupted from the Spanish "vagamundos" vagabonds) are probably descendants of coastal peoples who fled to the uplands to escape Spanish colonization.
The beginnings of Panay are shrouded in legend. It is said that ten Bornean datus, under Datu Puti, fled to Panay in search of freedom. There they entered a pact with the Ati chief, Datu Marikudo, to give to the new arrivals the coastal areas in exchange for a golden salakot (a type of hat) and a batya (wash basin). Datu Marikudo's wife, Maniwantiwan, acting shrewdly refused to accede unless the necklace of Datu Puti's wife, Pinangpangan, be given. The Atis agreed to vacate the coastal areas and moved to the mountains. The datus divided the land into Hamtik (Antique), Aklan (Capiz) and Irong-irong (Iloilo) to which Datu Paiburong is named leader. Panay it is said was ruled by two legal codes, the Maragtas, promulgated by Datu Sumakwel ca. 1225 and the Kalantiaw codified in Aklan in 1433.
Historians seriously doubt the veracity of these stories, although a historical marker placed in Batan, Aklan in 1956 by the Philippine Historical Committee accepts the Kalantiaw code as historical fact (See fuller discussion in Islas de los Pintados).
These stories not withstanding, archaeological evidence points to flourishing settlements built on farming, fishing, gathering and trading prior to Spanish colonization. Evidence of Chinese, Arab, Persian and Indian manufacture have been unearthed in numerous burial sites. These include beads, porcelain, etc. Excellent artisans in gold forged jewelry and death masks, an outstanding example, which covered the eyes nose and orifices of the dead, was discovered at Oton. The original is now in the National Museum and considered a national treasure; a replica is displayed in the Museo de Iloilo.
Spaniards first settled in the north at a place called Pan-ay in 1569. Etiological legend says that the name came about when colonizers under Miguel Lopez de Legazpi in search of adequate food supply found abundant rice supplies, they exclaimed: "Hay pan!" from which came the name "Pan-ay." The settlement gave the name to the whole island. Another etiological legend claims that name Iloilo comes from the nose-shaped delta where the Iloilo port was built: irong-irong (like a nose).
Pan-ay as the capital of the Philippines was short lived. In 1571, the Legazpi decided to transfer the capital to Manila where there was a better harbor and an active trading post. In 1581, Villa de Arévalo was established as a Spanish settlement, under Oton, by Gov. Gen. Ronquillo de Peñalosa and the following year became the capital of Panay Island. Here, the Spanish established an administrative center and dockyard. (In the early years of colonization, Oton was the name given both to the town and the southern coast and what we know today as Iloilo City was simply called Punta). The British under the buccaneer Thomas Cavendish attacked Arévalo in 1588; and after a series of attacks by the Dutch in 1609, 1614 and 1616, the capital was transferred to Punta where the wide mouth of the Iloilo River, shielded by Guimaras Island provided a safe shelter for ships and a defensible position.
In 1595, Esteban Rodriguez de Figueroa during his campaign to subjugate Mindanao established a supply station in Iloilo. A temporary palisade was built near the river mouth, and in 1616 in response to Dutch threats this was rebuilt as a stone fort, later named Fuerza de San Pedro. The foundations and part of the wall of the fort still stand.
Panay, with the capital at Iloilo remained one political entity until the provinces of Capiz and Antique were established, in 1716 and 1798 (or 96) respectively. Aklan was separated from Capiz as an independent province on 25 April 1956.
The Augustinians were the evangelizers of Panay, having established their first mission in Oton in 1572, the third Augustinian house in the Philippines after Cebu and Manila. The Jesuits arrived as chaplains of the military, established a chapel around 1607 near the fortification at the river mouth. The Jesuits established a college near the fort, later acquired an hacienda between Molo and Arévalo and at Suaraga (San Joaquin). The Jesuit chronicler Pedro Chirino established a boarding school at Tigbauan in 1592. Although a historical marker of the National Historical Institute placed there in 1975, identifies Tigbauan with the town of the same name, there is no record of the Jesuits being in Tigbauan town because the settlement had always been under the Augustinians who established it as an independent parish in 1578. Although the Augustinian provincial ordered the abandonment of all the Visayan missions in 1580 the order was apparently never implemented because Fr. Luis de Montoya was appointed prior of the town during the same year. The Hiligayonon term "tigbauan" means however a place of reeds, and could be any swampy area along the coast. Jesuits did go to Iloilo but to Suaraga; later jurisdictional conflict between the Augustinians and the Jesuits erupted as Jesuits began evangelizing the Mundos. Chirino may have, in fact, established a boarding school at Suaraga.
Panay's coast was subject to frequent slave raids and so a number of watchtowers were built to protect the coastal settlements. Iloilo served as an important way station for Mindanao, and the fort was used to outfit military expeditions south.
By the 19th century, Iloilo had a thriving weaving industry, cottage-based and funded partially by Chinese entrepreneurs who also marketed the textile. In 1855, Iloilo was opened to international trade after a long period of protectionism. This spurred the economic growth of Iloilo, especially when the market for Philippine sugar was opened in Europe. The British vice-consul, Nicolas Loney, was responsible for promoting the sugar industry by bringing sugarcane from Sumatra, machines from England and extending credit to planters. Loney also imported cloths from India and Manchester, England, which were inexpensive copies of the weaves popular in Iloilo. This spelled the doom of the weaving industry with the subsequent displacement of labor, which was then absorbed by the sugar industry. Loney established Loney and Co., the first foreign firm in Iloilo. Loney also established a shipping company that brought sugar from Negros to the international port of Iloilo. Capiz on the northern coast also participated in the sugar market. Buyers of molasses representing Manila-based distilleries, came to Capiz to buy the product.
The sugar trade attracted Chinese entrepreneurs; outside of Manila and Cebu, Iloilo was one place where the Spaniards allowed the Chinese to settle. The enterprising merchants provided transportation for the sugar and engaged in retail. Some eventually married into the local families and created a mestizo elite. The elite settled in Jaro. The Chinese settled in Molo, where a Chinese mestizo priest, Fr. Manuel Locsin, built a neogothic church in stone which still stands.
Iloilo joined the Revolution against Spain after serving as the Spanish capital for four months, after the capitulation of Manila. The independence of the Philippine was proclaimed in Santa Barbara on 17 November 1898.
By the end of the 19th century, Iloilo City and its suburbs of Jolo, Molo, and La Paz became one of the thriving urban centers of the Philippines. It became a cultural lodestone in the early 20th century so that visiting foreign opera troupes performed at Iloilo. The wealth generated by sugar is expressed in the opulent mansions and residences built by affluent families in Iloilo and Jaro during the first half of the 20th century. A number of foreign firms were established in Iloilo and a railway system linked Iloilo with Capiz to the north. Foreigners established their own exclusive club; the ruins of Club Ingles used to stand near Gen. Hughes St. in Iloilo. The cosmopolitan character of Iloilo catalyzed the construction of the first golf course in the country at Sta. Barbara. The golf course is still operating. Because of her affluence Iloilo came to be known as "Queen City of the South."
Iloilo suffered ruin because of catastrophic earthquakes in 1910 and 1948. One of the casualties was the Greek cross planned neogothic church of Oton, considered as the masterpiece of Augustinian architecture in the island.
Iloilo is a center for education in the Visayas. Here was established the CPU, UP Iloilo, a host of Catholic schools, Assumption, St. Clements, Sagrado Corazon de Jesus.
Iloilo was the site of some of the fiercest battles of World War II which as a consequence caused the widespread destruction of many of its heritage buildings. It was in Iloilo that the guerilla resistance was established and from here spread to the rest of the Visayas. Hence, retaliation was severe.
The post-war years saw the province embroiled in political squabbling, sending Iloilo into decline. Only in the past two decades is Iloilo reawakening with the establishment of a light industry area in Pavia, the building of gated subdivisions, malls, the diversification of crops, and the upgrading of infrastructure. But the province and city is still far from the glitter of its heyday, which still lingers in a city and province so genteel.

I feel bad coz we were not given a chance to see some churches which weren't able to survive the tests of time like Oton Church and Janiuay Church...
Wow nice pic! The other olf pic that I was able to see was that of Oton... As for Janiuay nami man ila church sort of fusion of old and new....

I also like the Gothic style of Franklin Hall in CPU. nami ang windows niya and its look great at night specially with the effects of streetlights.

City Districts Edition
Molo Church - "A church of beauty and elegance. The castle-like church with spires that outgrows tall tress and buildings"
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/3423/1224/1600/Etherial%20Edifice.jpg
Its two towering red spires and its regal structure sits on a throne high above the Molo plaza. It is also known to be a feminist church because of the two rows of sixteen female saints line on both sides of the altar. Its two towering red spires and its regal structure sits on a throne high above the Molo plaza. It is also known to be a feminist church because of the two rows of sixteen female saints line on both sides of the altar.

Casa Fiametta in Barotac Nuevo is an absolute delight. We've been there once kaya lang ang kabayo indi pa pwede arkilahan kay may time frame sila. Whatever that time frame means, I don't know. The place is lovely and cozy .. good for picnic gid.
Nice titles ... I'll expand this one with pictures and more descriptions later
Compared with the other churches in the city, Mandurriao's is the most unpopular ... It's not as old and iconic as the other churches.
But it looks good man, but not as impressive as the rest.

Next week, they will dedicate a whole episode to Bacolod.
It was a great showcase of Iloilo. I even taped it so my sisters could see it.

by looking at the pics, tani, indi na lang nila pagsobrahan ka urbanized. call me a selfish git, pero being a metro or a city doesnt matter as long as the people are happy are well established. a stable life for the people in our place is much better.
i still love nature and urbanization together.
napuno man PM ko sa imo nga juicy bits ba. lol. Thanks Caloy.
Grabe mga wordings mo ba .. kuha mo na gid almost tanan diri .. he he. But really I agree with you. Happiness is all that matters, man. I wish a combined nature and scrapers for Iloilo in the future. :)

sorry for that kirbs. hehehehehe...
yloilo has proven and had lived a grand life before, so nothing more to say. let the others have their share as well. a fast way of life is too much for us, a slow pace of life is too much as well. that is yloilo, slow but not too fast. able to sustain the demands of today.
as you would notice, the ylonggos barely leave the place because we have almost everything. well unlike me, because i want to go somewhere...
i still prefer yloilo to be an agricultural city rather than an industrial. yes money and progress is fast. but what about nature in industrial? (daw sim city ba).
JonJon75 April 17th, 2006, 10:44 PM Meanwhile to keep yuor Soul burning ILONGGO's here is the Dinagyang Song...
