Really? Wow! Never knew that Lambunao had that building. I've been to WVSU Campus and all in Lambunao but haven't seen this one. A Japanese Science School in the mountainous area .. Lambunao is moving well then from a very sugar-driven county of Iloilo.

Muelle Loney will be as grand as ever (for me anyway). Every history book that speaks about Iloilo will always and always include Muelle Loney in its writings. Everyone who wish to visit Iloilo should take a quick stroll in this very historical area of the city. Who would ever forget the grandest pier in the country, which had a direct trade to Europe in the past? Muelle Loney played its foremost role well .. and til now, stands tall and proud of its very existence.

METROPOLITAN_ILOILO April 18th, 2006, 04:30 AM WORLD RECORD
Master of Pain ‘sweeps’ for country, Guinness
BY GEROME DALIPE IV
ILOILO City – Stuntman Jess Caigoy, the man from Leon, Iloilo who has gained fame for his incredible feats of physical endurance, wants to put the Philippines in the limelight once more by attempting to earn a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Caigoy wants to set a world record on "Marathon Street Sweeping by an Individual in 24 Hours.”
Yesterday, Caigoy started sweeping the major streets of Leon town down to the municipalities of Alimodian and San Miguel. Various private and local government units of the said towns accompanied his noble attempt.
Caigoy is tagged as the "Master of Pain" because of his nerve-wracking stunts that has been lauded by local and international spectators.
Proceeds from the “sweeping event” will go to the purchase of hospital equipment of Aleosan District Hospital in Leon, Iloilo. Caigoy also hopes to encourage the people to support the Clean and Green Project of the local governments.
Various media, private and government institutions are supporting Caigoy in his attempt to set the world record.
Caigoy had appeared in various international television shows like "Ripley's Believe It or Not" and the AXN Action channel.
His stunts have been videotaped by the GMA7 public service program "Wish Ko Lang." Caigoy’s passion for heart-pounding stunts started way back in 1994 when he pulled vehicles with hooks pierced through his skin.
He contacted Guinness on the Internet and informed them about his interest to set a new record. Guinness wrote him back on September 16, 2003 informing him that he could do the sweeping stunt and spelled out the mechanics for its performance and documentation.
Caigoy was a talent coordinator for stunt performers in the noontime variety show Eat Bulaga! and in Magandang Tanghali Bayan in the 1990s.
Go go go Jess! Starring naman kita sini!
METROPOLITAN_ILOILO April 18th, 2006, 04:34 AM Iloilo joins Aliwan Fiesta anew
By DAVID ISRAEL SINAY
ILOILO City – The city and province of Iloilo hope to again figure prominently in the Aliwan Fiesta 2006. It is sending four tribes to compete in this annual “festival of festivals.”
In yesterday’s send off program sponsored by the city government, Tribu Ilonganon and Tribu Tultugan-Manuggama performed at the Freedom Grandstand.
City Hall’s Executive Assistant Benito Jimena said the Municipality of Sta. Barbara will send Tribu Kahilwayan to the competition.
Passi City will have Pintados de Passi represented, too.
Tribu Ilonganon and Tribu Tultugan-Manuggama are being sponsored by the city government though the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation while the two others shall have their respective local government units to shoulder the expenses.
The Aliwan Fiesta will be held at the Quirino Grandstand on April 27-29.
Jimena said the Aliwan Fiesta 2006, initiated by the City of Manila, Pasay City and the Manila Broadcasting Company, will have three components – street dance competition, float competition, and the Reyna ng Aliwan.
Miss Dinagyang’s Cherrrie Mae Barbo will compete in the Reyna ng Aliwan on the 28th.
The grand champion will bag P1 million; 1st runner-up, P500,000; and 2nd runner-up, 250,000.
There will be 10 consolation prizes of P50,000 each. Each region’s best (Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao) will take home P200,000.
The winner of the best in float category will be given P200,000 while a P50,000 cash prize awaits the Reyna ng Aliwan winner.
The Aliwan Festival, now on its fourth year, helped in the City of Iloilo’s popularity.
Last year, Iloilo was the grand slam winner of the Aliwan. Pintados de Passi of Passi City was the grand champion; Tribu Kahilwayan of Sta. Barbara was declared the 1st runner-up while Dinagyang champion Tribu Silak was 2nd runner-up.
Yehey! Apat na entry ta! Welcome Tribu Manuggama! Bring home the bacon guys!
Hala Bira ILOILO!

lewdsaint April 18th, 2006, 09:15 AM Iloilo rated ‘A’ in LGU rating system
The Province of Iloilo was recently rated "A" (Above Average) by an independent Rating Committee using the internationally-accepted LGU rating system of the LGU Guarantee Corporation (LGUGC). This means that the Province of Iloilo carries a low risk of default.
An above average credit rating is quite high for a province given the limitations faced by a province under the Local Government Code. Among these limitations are a province’s reliance on its municipalities and component cities for real property and business tax collection share, and in the type of economic enterprise projects it can undertake.
Despite said constraints, the Province of Iloilo under the strong leadership of Governor Niel Tupas Sr., who is currently serving his second term, has managed its financial resources quite impressively. This is clearly manifested by the fast development of the province into the center of business and recreation in Region 6.
Governor Tupas Sr. envisions a progressive Province of Iloilo with strong community participation in local government’s activities. In line with this, the governor has accepted the challenge of the private financial community to be the first LGU to implement a fully transparent bond flotation process. As a first step, the Economic Enterprise Committee of the province invited all the accredited Financial Advisors of the LGUGC and recognized by the Bureau of the Local Government Finance to bid for the financial advisory services of Iloilo’s proposed infrastructure projects. The financial underwriting and trusteeship services will likewise be bidded out after the feasibility study for one or more projects has been finalized. Should direct borrowing be the best financing option, the financing services will likewise be bidded out. The implementation of competitive bidding is necessary to create an even playing field for all LGU debt market players, reduce the cost of bond flotation for the LGU as contracts will be awarded to the lowest bidder, and minimize, if not totally eliminate, bad governance practices.
The provincial government of Iloilo was not afraid to show its financial records, and to undergo an in-depth rating of all aspects of its operations because its local officials exercise transparency and practice good local governance. The province has in fact received various recognitions in financial management, and was awarded as the Most Outstanding Provincial Treasury in Region 6 in 2003. Local officials of Iloilo must be commended for taking this bold step and setting a good example that other LGUs may emulate.

OPBF Champ Santillan Ready For Yamaguchi
By Rey Danseco
Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation welterweight champion Rev “Gentle Giant” Santillan has arrived in Japan for his scheduled title defense against an unbeaten challenger.
Veteran trainer Brix Flores accompanied the rangy Santillan in the flight from Mactan International Airport in Cebu around 7 a.m yesterday.
The 5-11 Filipino southpaw will put his newly re-acquired regional title against 7th ranked Japanese fighter Hiroshi Yamaguchi, who stands a half inch taller, at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo on April 20.
It will be the first time the pride of Jaro town in Iloilo will face a taller opponent.Santillan, now rated No. 11 by the World Boxing Council, believes his experience will make the difference, saying Yamaguchi’s style is tailor made for him.
Yamaguchi, who will face his first Filipino opponent, and fought only one good boxer in his young career when in December 2004 he figured in a draw over 10 rounds with unbeaten Japan-based Uzbek Farkhad Masa Bakirov, who is rated by the World Boxing Association.
Santillan promised not to take Yamaguchi lightly despite the fact he defeated more quality foes compared to Yamaguchi, whose mostly beat overmatched Thai imports.
Santillan, 28, sports a 22-2-1 win-loss-draw record with 16 knockouts, while Yamaguchi, 27, parades a 14-0-1 card with 10 knockouts.
Santillan reclaimed the OPBF belt in his last fight on December 3, with 8th round knockout of Japanese champ Kazuhiko Hidaka in what was a rematch.
Go go go REV!

MALL KING WANTS AIRPORT
Sy to convert Mandurriao airport to commercial center
By Francis Allan L. Angelo
MALL King Henry Sy is reportedly interested in buying the old domestic airport in Mandurriao, Iloilo City.
Reports from the Department of Finance (DoF) and the City Hall said Sy, owner of the SM Prime Holdings, plans to convert the old airport site into a business complex.
DoF sources said Sy wants to annex the airport lot to his existing property at Barangay Bolilao, Mandurriao on which SM City-Iloilo stands.
Earlier reports said the Ayalas, who are responsible for transforming Makati City from a grassland to the country’s financial capital, is also moving to acquire the Mandurriao airport.
The 60-hectare airport lot is worth at least P12billion, according to DoF and City Hall assessment.
The DoF is now at the helm of an asset privatization group that will dispose the 6-hectare Mandurriao airport once the new Iloilo airport of international standards at Cabatuan-Sta. Barbara area is operational.
The team is composed of representatives from the Department of Transportation and Communications, Department of Justice, Department of Budget and Management and Air Transportation Office (ATO).
The group also hired the services of a good consultant firm CB Richard Ellis, the same company that assisted the Clark and Fort Bonifacio Conversion Authorities.
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas was elated upon hearing the said development saying the Mandurriao airport site will become the new growth area in the city.
According to the 2005 World's Richest People list of Forbes magazine, Henry Sy is the wealthiest man in the Philippines and the 355th in world.
With a net worth of $1.9 billion, Sy is also one of the respected taipans of Asia.
Acknowledged as the country’s Retail King, Henry Sy, Sr. has come a long way from the modest shoe store he set up in Quiapo in 1946 to the country’s biggest chain of shopping malls.
In recognition of his entrepreneurial excellence, Henry Sy, Sr. has been named Management Man of the Year by the Makati Business Club and was conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Business Management by De La Salle University.
Committed to uplift the lives of his less fortunate countrymen, he organized the SM Foundation Inc., which helps underprivileged but promising young Filipinos.
SM, which is the trademark of his businesses names, came from the abbreviations of 'Shoe Mart'. Several of his children now manage the majority of his holdings, although he still maintains some degree of control over the businesses, especially the SM malls and the Banco de Oro Universal Bank. He is also a stockholder in the China Banking Corporation.
SM Malls has consistently been cited and awarded as one of the Philippines best managed companies. The SM City is the biggest in Asia and the third largest in the world. The SM Mall of Asia, which is built in the reclamation area of Pasay City in the Philippines, will be considered the largest mall in the world when built.

P900-M DEBT
RP government owes Jap contractor of new airport project
By Francis Allan L. Angelo
THE Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) reportedly owes the Japanese contractor of the new Iloilo international airport project P900million.
A source from the New Iloilo Airport Development Project (Niadp) who requested anonymity said the Taisei-Shimizu Joint Venture (TSJV) is spending its own money to beat the October 2006 deadline.
The source added that the P900million is the counterpart funding of the national government as requirement for the P6.2-billion loan from the Japan Bank of International Cooperation.
The said fund was to be coursed through the DOTC, which is the implementing agency of the project, for the acquisition of the 184-hectare lot and disturbance compensation for the affected residents and tenants.
Atty. Roberto Maroma, counsel to the TSJV, confirmed that the national government owes the Japanese contractor P200million as of November 2005.
Maroma added that the “Republic of the Philippines violated its contract with TSJV” for failure to release the funding.
“But I have no idea if how much is the latest billing of the contractor. The TSJV is now shelling money of its own pocket just to continue the project,” Maroma said.
Maroma, who was confined at the hospital due to loose bowel movement, assured to go over the TSJV billings to the national government once he is discharged.
DOTC officials could not be reached for comments.
Governor Niel Tupas Sr. said he will look into the said report but assured that the airport project is still right on schedule.
“As of February, the slippage of the airport project is at 23 percent while the accomplishment is at 33 percent. If all goes well, the project will be finished by Ocotber 2006,” Tupas said.
However, the Japanese contractor has asked for an extension until March 2007 if problems arise in the project, Tupas said.
The airport project has been hounded with controversy beginning with “Turil ni Niel” exposé of former second district congressman Augusto “Boboy” Syjuco, now Tesda director-general, against Tupas.
The exposé even became the subject of a public debate between Syjuco and Tupas. Nothing came out of that debate but wasted saliva.
Syjuco’s exposé triggered a congressional inquiry in 2003 but it fizzled out without concrete results as Syjuco eventually joined Tupas and Drilon during the 2004 elections after abandoning then first district Congressman Oscar Garin who ran against Tupas.
The “Turil ni Niel” yarn rose from the grave last year when third district Rep. Arthur Defensor, chair of the House’s good government committee, led another round of congressional investigation into certain anomalies and irregularities at the airport project, this time based on the allegations of Board Member Manny Gallar.
The Defensor committee concluded the probe several weeks back but it has yet to come up with a report of its findings.

kirby21 April 19th, 2006, 12:21 PM City Hall offices to transfer in malls
By Lory Ann B. Bilbao
THE employees of the old Iloilo City Hall will have to vacate their offices and rent in SM City Iloilo soon after the City finally decided that the new building will be built in its old site in Plaza Libertad instead of Barangay San Pedro, Molo district.
After the reported voting of the officials of the City Government which favored to making the hall in its old site, it was finally decided that the new hall shall remain in its old site.
The presentation of the project plan was done in April 6. Architect William Coscolluela, as assigned by Treñas presented the same.
Out of the reported 25 officials, 22 agreed to develop the old city hall building and three voted for the construction of the same in the City Government's 5-hectare lot in Barangay San Pedro, Molo.
Treñas added earlier that the present site of the City Hall is more accessible to all employees of the City Government compared to that in Barangay San Pedro.
Based on the space assessment of the architect, the city needs at least P320 million for the entire building.
Treñas said the City needs 16,000 to 17,000 square meters to accommodate to all the offices under the City Government while it was estimated that per square meter costs P20,000 to P22,000.
The said project plan in the old site suggested a multi-storey building with computerization system.
He earlier said that the City Council will still have to approve the project plan and works and set a time-line when to vacate the old City Hall.
At present, the executive branch and several offices occupy the 2,100 square-meter City Hall in Plaza Libertad while the legislative branch and some offices occupy the second floor of the Iloilo Terminal Market.
City Councilor Ely Estante told Sun.Star that the new Iloilo City Hall was planned to be an eight storey building with a penthouse.
The construction might start this quarter of the year or in the third quarter.

kirby21 April 19th, 2006, 12:24 PM Four Ilonggo tribes will join Aliwan Fiesta 2006
WILL an Ilonggo tribe still reign in the Aliwan Fiesta and come home anew with the P1 million grand prize?
This isn't far as four record holder tribes from the city and province of Iloilo including last year's grand champion, Pintados de Pasi are set to leave on April 25 for Manila to join in the street dance competition, one of the highlights of the Aliwan Fiesta 2006 slated on April 27 to 29, 2006.
During the street dance competition of the three - day event, different festivals in the country will be up against each other in their performances. Other features of the event include the float competition and the Reyna ng Aliwan.
Joining Pintados de Pasi of Passi City are Tribu Kahilwayan of Sta. Barbara, Tribu Manog-gama of Maasin, Iloilo and Tribu Ilonganon of Jalandoni Memorial National High School of Iloilo City.
Pintados de Pasi is 2005 Aliwan's grand champion while Tribu Kahilwayan was 1st runner up. The participation of both tribes in the Aliwan Fiesta are sponsored by their respective local government units.
On the other hand, it is the Iloilo City government and Smart through the Dinagyang Foundation that mainly sponsor the participation of the Tribu Ilonganon and Tribu Manog-gama in the contest. Tribu Ilonganon and Manog-gama were respectively declared champions in the Ati and Kasadyahan competitions of the 2006 Dinagyang festival.
Tribu Kahilwayan and Pintados de Pasi were past winners of the Dinagyang Festival. Tribu Kahilwayan was declared champion in the Kasadyahan competition of the 2004 Dinagyang Festival while Pintados de Pasi won the same award the year after.
Dinagyang Festival is iloilo's annual premier celebration held every fourth week-end of January. It is a religious celebration in honor of Senor Sto Nino and a thanksgiving for the blessings of abundance and safety depicted through pageantry and dance.
Dinagyang Executive Committee Director Ben Jimena said Aliwan Festival is a venue for the Dinagyang Festival to win the respect of the festival community as it strives to become the best festival in the country.
A P1 million cash prize awaits the Aliwan grand winner. The second placer will receive P500,000 and the third placer P250,000. Three regional winners will also get P200,000 each while the top 10 finalists will be given P50,000 each. (PIA)

Iloilo among organic agri techno farm demo sites
The province of Iloilo is among the 21 provinces tapped for the establishment of modified rapid composting techno demo farms in the country, having a standing rice crop of about 1,800 hectares.
The promotion of organic-based agriculture program is a cost-reduction strategy embarked on by the Department of Agriculture (DA).
Agriculture Secretary Domingo Panganiban said that the "Agri-Kalikasan" organic-based agriculture program has a start-up fund from Japan's 2KR Program amounting to P246 million.
Panganiban said this will reduce the dependence of low-income farmers on oil-based fertilizers through the "Tipid-abono" technology, an organic-based balanced fertilization which will prevent soil fertility loss while restoring soil quality.
The other provinces included in the composting techno demo farms are Quirino, Ilocos Norte, Cagayan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Quezon, Occidental, Mindoro, Romblon, Capiz, Bohol, Negros oriental, Leyte, Zamboanga del Sur, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte, North Cotabato and Agusan del Norte.
All in all, the program is being implemented in 56 target provinces, with the above-mentioned provinces as sites of the technology demonstration farms.

JonJon75 April 19th, 2006, 12:37 PM Mango growers, investors urged to attend 8th National Mango Congress
By Maricar M. Calubiran
Iloilo -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is encouraging mango growers and prospective investors to attend the 8th National Mango Congress next month here in Iloilo City.
DTI provincial director Diosdado Cadena said issues concerning the status and directions of the Philippine mango industry, mango production and field establishment, improved cultural management for bearing tress, investment forum for Western Visayas, improvement of fruit quality for export, post-handling of mango and fruit processing and marketing systems.
Cadena said the congress which is slated on May 17 until 19 will also serve as venue for enhancing the global competitiveness of Philippine mango. He said the region particularly the island province of Guimaras is capable of producing mangoes for international market but the mango industry players will have to learn the techniques in marketing the produce.
Countries such as United States, Japan and Australia requires high standard of produce when it comes to imported fruits especially mangoes. Only the Guimaras mangoes have entered the US market since it is weevil free.
Cadena added that it is the first time that Iloilo City will host the national mango. The previous congress were held in Zamboanga and Tarlac. The Philippine Mango Industry Foundation Inc. and Department of Agriculture are the lead organizers of the forthcoming 8th National Mango Congress.
During the congress, participants will also visit the island province of Guimaras for its Guimaras Manggahan Festival, tour to Oro Verde Mango plantation, DOLE mango plantation and National Mango Research and Development Center.

Ilonggo Designers: Making Waves
Text & Photos by Jong Combong-Pijuan
For all the slings and arrows, the Philippine Fashion Week 2006 opened with its usual aplomb. Never deviating from its main purpose, Runway Productions ran a tight ship for ten straight days, providing a fitting venue for local designers and artists to showcase their works through a series of properly produced and executed fashion shows at the NBC Tent at the Fort and at the Glorietta Activity Center last March 31 to April 9.
Leading the pack of talented artisans are three of our very own Ilonggo designers: Eric de los Santos, Aldrich Aparicio and Jasmine Castelo. As always, the three designers never departed from their usual lines, proving to one and all that one need not resort to hypocrisy or cheap tricks in order to be noticed.
Jasmine Castelo stood out from the bevy of new generation designers and got rave reviews for her elegantly and flawlessly executed all-black luxe collection inspired by
Azzedine Alaia and Issey Miyake. A throwback from the 50s yet with a spritz from the future, Jasmine has ingeniously blended the old and the new, mixing lycra, viscose and leather and creating a whole new breed of chicness - Castelo-style.
Aldrich Aparicio opened the second day on the right note and mood with no less than his sister, Manila-based model Everille walking the Runway runway wearing a classic, satin trench coat. According to Aldrich, his collection was inspired by his sister Everille, "who has survived the modeling world's quest for "who's new" and who has made a name for herself as a model not by cheap gimmicks but by professionalism." Making use of pastel-colored Shantung and burgundy and black duchess satin, Aldrich Aparicio's collection epitomizes his ideal woman: one with depth, substance and passion.
The Ilonggo fashion prince has done it again. Eric really knows how to play it up and play it well. The young veteran of fashion shows, Eric can whip up a collection that could make you go weak in the knees. Not for the faint of heart, his red, lime green, yellow gold and black color palette juxtaposed strongly yet perfectly with the ultra-feminine silhouette of his designs. Marrying florals and stripes, his silk and chiffon creations pay homage to the modern woman who's sweet and hot - what a combination!
To Jasmine, Aldrich and Eric - Congratulations! Thank you for putting your best foot (and collections!) forward and making us truly proud!
Watch out next Wednesday for the second and last installment of Philippine Fashion Week 2006 as Hot Haute brings you a preview of some of Manila's top designers and their creations.

kirby21 April 19th, 2006, 01:25 PM sorry for that kirbs. hehehehehe...
yloilo has proven and had lived a grand life before, so nothing more to say. let the others have their share as well. a fast way of life is too much for us, a slow pace of life is too much as well. that is yloilo, slow but not too fast. able to sustain the demands of today.
as you would notice, the ylonggos barely leave the place because we have almost everything. well unlike me, because i want to go somewhere...
i still prefer yloilo to be an agricultural city rather than an industrial. yes money and progress is fast. but what about nature in industrial? (daw sim city ba).
No comment .. we had it before, what else to prove? I like slow pace of life a little bit. Like here, contented and more relax with an ample of pennies to live comfortably. That's why we loved Europe so much. The quality of life is really good. :)

Another question...why SM City?
by the way pm ako ca imo kirbs wala mo naman guinasabat.

wecky April 19th, 2006, 10:09 PM Iloilo rated ‘A’ in LGU rating system
Local officials of Iloilo must be commended for taking this bold step and setting a good example that other LGUs may emulate.

wecky April 19th, 2006, 10:23 PM Iloilo City, Guimaras boost tourism prospects
By Jeehan V. Fernandez
Both Iloilo City and Guimaras are pooling resources to enhance their tourism potentials. Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas and Guimaras Governor JC Rahman Nava met at the Iloilo City Hall Wednesday to discuss the initiatives for the promotion of local tourism of both provinces.
Both LGUs are banking on the program dubbed “Experience Iloilo and Guimaras,” a collective undertaking among all sectors in Iloilo and Guimaras to promote the city and province as tourism, trade and investment destinations.
The promotion was conceptualized after a memorandum of agreement (MOA) on the Guimaras-Iloilo City Alliance (GICA) forged by Treñas and Nava on May 22, 2005. The GICA was organized to help improve the economic competitiveness of the two LGUs through joint undertakings in investment promotion, tourism development, and planning and coordination of infrastructure support services.
GICA is set to create awareness and public understanding; increase visitor arrivals; generate economic, social and cultural benefits; promote greater utilization of tourist facilities and services, and bring all the sectors together to host the visitors.
Both LGUs have agreed to focus on key development priorities such as ports, roads, and common investment policies to ensure a favorable business climate.
Treñas stressed that, “We have been closely working on the program since last year. We have to make terminals visitor-friendly. We have identified the infrastructure needed to improve travel among visitors.” He added the alliance is eyeing for the conversion of an abandoned park near the bay into a terminal to serve as link for public plying to Guimaras island. Currently, there are two pump-boat terminals operating for Iloilo-Guimaras route and vice versa.
“We have been implementing plans particularly by making tour packages available to the public. We are also looking into the construction of infrastructure support projects to put things together to institutionalize the program,” Nava told reporters.
Nava said that Guimaras is attracting investments especially for tourism ventures. “More investors have aired intentions to put up development projects on the island and they are still working on it. The problem is how to acquire property, but we have to address this in order to encourage the promising tourism industry. There will also be opening of potential attractions in some areas,” Nava said.
Nava pointed out the impact of tourism growth to Guimaras will have “a broad involvement down to the ordinary vendors as well as resort owners, agriculture, market, and all kinds of entrepreneurs and small businesses.”

Na naman? lol. They'll brush thing aside, I'm sure of that. Look at what happened last December. Nadula lang ang isyu nga to, wala sabat nga ginhatag ang city government. Why are they still holding on sa PECO. May ara ayhan anomalya between PECO and City Hall? Again, we have to open our energy market to other investors. Guess Trenas is trying to hide something .. hmmm. Not a good thing if he wanted to run for his third term next year.

I liked this subject matter a lot. It's of great importance for everyone. First world countries, if I may say, never boasted itself with a massive popluation but with a strong economy, good quality of life and employment for everyone. I hope Iloilo will start heading this way. Population control is one of the most important thing that needs to be addressed in our country's present situation.

I wish they'll start converting Rotary Park. It looks so old and dinggy. It needs facelift and a lot of refurbishment. I like to see new cafe shops there, more trees and bigger playgrounds for children. It was once a haven of Iloilo City residents on weekends.
With Iloilo-Guimaras Terminals/Wharves, I hope they'll reconstruct them. Again, a better and more tourist friendly terminals to rise up, just in case.

It's almost on its finishing phase. I still remember that Iloilo ranks fourth in air passenger beating other international airports in the country. With the new airport soon to operate, it'll further boost Iloilo's passenger capacity. And if things go as planned, a direct international flights from Europe and the USA will be in place.
JikJik April 20th, 2006, 12:46 PM Viva SM City! Baskog ah. Yheye !
Oppps! Am I reading it right? City Hall offices to be transferred to SM City to make way for the new city hall in an old site? Wow. It's kinda accessible to all with lots of amenities around, most specially shopping, restos, etc.
JonJon75 April 20th, 2006, 12:48 PM I'm going backward with my postings (lol). Anyway, nice to note a good relationships between these two provinces. Guimaras was once a part of Iloilo, and I believed that every Ilonggo of Iloilo still has a good heart for Guimarasnons and consider them as our nearest brothers and sisters. I wish a prosperous tourism industry for both Iloilo and Guimaras.
I concur. It's always Iloilo-Guimaras .. the Heart of the Philippines and the Mango Country .. good combination considering that Mango is our national fruit.
JikJik April 20th, 2006, 12:50 PM Laban gid eh. Projects left and right naman ini ... makita man ina biskan sa municiplaities. Right now hambal nila, road from Mandurriao to San Miguel ia well-paved na ... kadasig lang gid. :)
as expected for every politicians around. Whenever election time is near, you'll lots and lots of projects being implemented. It's very classic back home.
JonJon75 April 20th, 2006, 12:52 PM I liked this subject matter a lot. It's of great importance for everyone. First world countries, if I may say, never boasted itself with a massive popluation but with a strong economy, good quality of life and employment for everyone. I hope Iloilo will start heading this way. Population control is one of the most important thing that needs to be addressed in our country's present situation.
My sentiments, too. hopefully, we'll learn.
JikJik April 20th, 2006, 12:55 PM hmmm budlay na, basi marumpag ang building ca padali nga obra. di ko na gusto. slow but sure. pero indi naman snail slow ah. ang proper lang. huwaaaa... shoe box city hall.
That's right. Slowly but surely. We're not in competition here at all. lol. We knew our place way back then and it's history. You can never changed the history.
JonJon75 April 20th, 2006, 12:57 PM A brilliant "pamukaw" Metro. But that's right. Progress of Iloilo is definitely in the hand of the Ilonggos. Keep that flame burning!
Indeed! Let's keep the ball rolling and ... spin-a-win!
JikJik April 20th, 2006, 01:01 PM Another National Congress for the city:
Nat’l congress for population officers set
ILOILO City -- [B]The Association of Population Officers and Workers on Region VI (APOWR-VI) will host the National Conference of Population Officers on April 20-22, 2006 at Punta Villa, Arevalo district here.
....
(from: Panay News)
A National Congress venue for every month or two is not bad enough at all. It's actually very impressive, more or less.
again, keep on eye with our ever growing population. We need better family income rather than many mouths to feed. At least, we're already on our best with the first one.
JonJon75 April 20th, 2006, 01:02 PM Same here Jon. Glad I have a partner for discussions here. I'm off for a bit and whaallaahh ... Anyhow, glad to see everyon'e around to share their bits and pieces about Iloilo, it's development and progress.
Me, too. I'm happy to see you here once more.
JonJon75 April 20th, 2006, 01:03 PM I wish they'll start converting Rotary Park.
I loved that idea? Why don't they build a huge ferris wheel within the site like the London Eye in Thames River. It's classic and very nice.
JikJik April 20th, 2006, 01:06 PM Padalagan lang liwat si Raul sa pagka-Conressman indi lang Mayor ah! Maayo kung ara sya sa kongreso kay bida permi ang siudad.
Raul is a hyper media-grabber. Bet he's more into debates in Congress than being a Mayor of the city. I still believe he's a good person though amidst everything.
JonJon75 April 20th, 2006, 01:09 PM It's almost on its finishing phase. I still remember that Iloilo ranks fourth in air passenger beating other international airports in the country. With the new airport soon to operate, it'll further boost Iloilo's passenger capacity. And if things go as planned, a direct international flights from Europe and the USA will be in place.
Oh what a fab! Hope this old plan will push through. But on whether they'll transform it into an international airport few months after its first operation or years, a new and modern airport will definitely boost Iloilo's economy. It's never been predicted, it's with good statistical based. A projected leap of more than 30-50% increase in air passenger will surely surface in two or three years time of operation. Go ILOILO!
JikJik April 20th, 2006, 01:12 PM All of the above ba .. thanks for posting the link Chymera. All links are great .. pero siyempre mas manami gid iya ang ILOILO-HEART OF THE PHILIPPINES Blog by Chymera. Cheers Marcos!
Who's Marcos? Seems news links for Iloilo is increasing in numbers. Good to read more news back home.
JonJon75 April 20th, 2006, 01:15 PM No comment .. we had it before, what else to prove? I like slow pace of life a little bit. Like here, contented and more relax with an ample of pennies to live comfortably. That's why we loved Europe so much. The quality of life is really good. :)
that's subjective Kirby (laughs!). but there you go, man. You cannot compare life here abroad back home. Big difference indeed. And I know what you mean.
JikJik April 20th, 2006, 01:17 PM Amo man Jon. Tax gid naton maapektuhan. Pero sige lang, tani dasigon na lang sang mga Coscuella kay everytime may delayed, bayad kita sa SM City .. he he.
I agree with you Kirby. But this is more of a projected or predicted outgoings already. The city hall men made their decision already. In as much as we wanted to complain about it, it's a done deal na.
JonJon75 April 20th, 2006, 01:19 PM Oppps! Am I reading it right? City Hall offices to be transferred to SM City to make way for the new city hall in an old site? Wow. It's kinda accessible to all with lots of amenities around, most specially shopping, restos, etc.
Think you are Jik. It's a good combination .. and very accessible to the residents .. he he.

JikJik April 20th, 2006, 01:27 PM City Hall offices to transfer in malls
By Lory Ann B. Bilbao
THE employees of the old Iloilo City Hall will have to vacate their offices and rent in SM City Iloilo soon after the City finally decided that the new building will be built in its old site in Plaza Libertad instead of Barangay San Pedro, Molo district.
After the reported voting of the officials of the City Government which favored to making the hall in its old site, it was finally decided that the new hall shall remain in its old site.

GRAND HOTEL IN ILOILO CITY
WE notice that the Iloilo Grand Hotel on Iznart St., Iloilo City is oftentimes the center of many activities like meetings, conferences and parties.
Mostly, government sponsored meetings are held there.
We were told that the room rates, function rooms and prices of foods and other services are much lower than in other hotels, not to mention the fact that its terms are liberal and reasonable.
We therefore congratulate the management of the hotel that is owned by four rich people.
Say mo, Rudy?

JikJik April 20th, 2006, 01:50 PM As you can see... some of the component are in place and some are on the way... like the New ILOILO International Airport, ILOILO Floood Control Project, Circumferential Road... etc...
Just a matter of time Caloy!
Maayong Hapon sa Tanan!
I agree Metro. Just a matter of time indeed. Once all these infras are in place, we can see a better Iloilo and a more progressive metropolitan area. It's starting already and undeniably making its waves all over.

I agree. St Anne's always a symbol for Iloilo and defines Iloilo skyline as well. The city looks very European in nature from air with a castle-like church in the background.

JikJik April 20th, 2006, 02:01 PM Iloilo rated ‘A’ in LGU rating system

JonJon75 April 20th, 2006, 02:06 PM MALL KING WANTS AIRPORT

JikJik April 20th, 2006, 02:08 PM Na naman?
This issue will always create a problem lest city hall and provincial capitol will welcome other energy investors in the city and province. Let's be very vigilant about this matter.

I agree Van. The last time we passed there was last year lang gid. The highway is an absolute brilliant but after San Miguel town, medyo may area siya nga lubakon especially towards the town proper na of Alimodian. The best highway I've seen was from Iloilo City up to Miag-ao. Kanami mag-drive. so smooth. You can speed more up to 80-90km/hr and wala lubak. Towards Passi City naman, mas maayo pa gid. After Passi City may diutay nga tingi pero after that going to Roxas City in Capiz na, it's a well-paved road na gid man.
chymera00 April 20th, 2006, 02:39 PM Hmm this is Good. So that means they have plans of creating a "Terminal" or a new port for Guimaras... and it seems they are planning to convert the Rotary Park... Well its about time... to have a decent and modern port for Guimaras....
Hala Bira ILOILO!
I was thinking of the same thing ... I passed by rotary park lately, they were kidding when they said it was abandoned :) Some tindaans have opened up shop there, "neighborhood" kids running around and tall grass have invaded the place... it's not what it used to be, sigh.
OO man decent is the word. When the port is finished tourists dont have to pass by this:
http://library.thinkquest.org/25780/projects/user/IloiloFishVillII.jpg
And I hope they don't totally convert Rotary Park into a port, just build on some parts of it and improve what's left into what the place used to be, a nicely maintained park ...
Na naman? lol. They'll brush thing aside, I'm sure of that. Look at what happened last December. Nadula lang ang isyu nga to, wala sabat nga ginhatag ang city government. JonJon75 April 20th, 2006, 02:49 PM I was thinking of the same thing ... I passed by rotary park lately, they were kidding when they said it was abandoned Some tindaans have opened up shop there, "neighborhood" kids running around and tall grass have invaded the place... it's not what it used to be, sigh.
what a sad state .. Rotary Park used to be my place every weekend. There was a small cafe' shop there and lots selling ice cream and balloons. Those were the times then. Hope they'll rebuild the park to its original and proper look. I loved parks. Hope one will be built in Iloilo .. moreso, if it's the Rotary Park.
kirby21 April 20th, 2006, 02:52 PM Indeed! Let's keep the ball rolling and ... spin-a-win!
You won a car .. harharhar. Jon, nice to know that many Ilonggos nagbululugtaw na no .. kita mo damo aton improvements subong. Tani more will join our crusade for a progressive Iloilo. :)
JonJon75 April 20th, 2006, 02:55 PM It maybe because their function hall can accomodate more people than most hotels in Iloilo... I'm not sure
really Chy? Mas dako pa iya capacity compare sa Sarabia Manor and Convention Center? I haven't been to this hotel. May picture ka da? Hmm .. really intrigues me, huh!
Not yet ... So far, I've not yet heard if the bidding has started ...
still awaiting pa gali ta no? Few more months and i-announce lang nila nga tapos na ang bidding and may nagdaog na.
JonJon75 April 20th, 2006, 02:57 PM Gani man, pero I think this power crisis thing is over-sensationalized by media. I'm beginning to doubt if there even is a power crisis and natak-an naman ko mag basa about sa issue nga ni kay since highschool ko pa ni ang issue nga ni (maybe even before that)
always looming crisis .. probably they want to increase the rate na naman .. we're already paying the highest rate of electricity in the country. It's more than enough na siguro ginansiya sang PECO sa mga Ilonggos.
kirby21 April 20th, 2006, 03:01 PM what movie Kirby? I'm kinda interested sa phrase nga ina.

About the Iloilo Rotary Park, wala na .. pugad na ina dira sang mga kawatan no .. hehe .. joke lang gid. The park looks awful. Even the trees looks old and dying. I hope they'll revive it. marsleg April 20th, 2006, 06:43 PM for a starter .. here's my contribution:
Tinorian residents heap ‘Himaya’ in Btac. Nuevo
ILOILO -- The people of Brgy. Tinorian in Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo, have enough reason to hope for a brighter and better tomorrow as they have started to benefit from the HIMAYA project of the Buensuceso-Celiz Foundation, Inc., led by its President Asuncion B. Sulit.
On March 20, 2006, Sulit and her development partners laid the foundation of the project in the barangay, symbolizing only the beginning of good tidings for the people there.
HIMAYA, which means very great praise or worshipful thanksgiving, is a project founded by Atty. Abelardo P. Sulit, with the assistance of his wife Asuncion, way back in 1990.
Atty. Sulit envisioned a project, which would have effective and meaningful impact on the general welfare of the populace in the community of Brgy. Tinorian, cascading to the whole of Barotac Nuevo, and even to the province of Iloilo. This resulted in the birthing of the Buensuceso-Celiz Foundation, Inc. a non-profit organization now registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The late Atty. Sulit left the Philippines in the early 70’s for New York City where he became the first foreign lawyer to be admitted to the New York Bar. At Queens DA office, he was a prosecutor and trial assistant of the Second Chance Bureau. He was a member of the Philippine Bar Association and of the New York State Bar Association.
Furthermore, Atty. Sulit was a pioneering community organizer. He worked to forge the Philippine Communities Executive Council where he was the legal counsel for ten (10) years from 1977 to 1987. He co-chaired the Legal Task Force of the Coalition for the Advancement of Filipino Women, founded the Neo Filipino Association in Brooklyn and of APS Foundation, and supported the Children’s Orchestra Society and the Asian Pacific Islander Coalition, to name a few.
At the Central Philippine University (CPU), he was an active leader during his time. He held office as president and vice president of CPC Republic (now CPU Republic) in 1952 to 1953 and in 1951 to 1952, respectively. Later, he served as the legal counsel of CPU for seven years, before leaving for New York, USA.
On the other hand, his widow, Mrs. Asuncion Buensuceso- Sulit, amiable and impressed loveliness, was a graduate of the University of San Agustin (then Colegio de San Agustin- Iloilo), where she was a member of the first coed batch in high school. She is a retired registered nurse of the Veterans Memorial Hospital of New York.
Significantly, both of them were nurtured in institutions where magnanimity and benevolence were inculcated through conscientious community service. The death of Atty. Sulit in 1998, however, momentarily suspended the realization of “himaya” for the people of Barotac Nuevo and of the province of Iloilo.
The revival of the project recently has been made possible through the assistance and collaboration of several distinguished personalities and institutions. Among those who have expressed support for the noble undertakings the project has set are Fr. Manuel Vergara, O.S.A., University of San Agustin President, and Dr. Juanito Acanto, Central Philippine University President. Both autonomous universities, inspired by their Christian traditions, have committed their extension services to the project.
Others who have also responded to the call for service of the HIMAYA project were Mayor Pedro B. Hautea, Municipality of Barotac Nuevo, Councilor Francisco Caligdong, Sangguniang Bayan of Barotac Nuevo; Fr. Richard Pinongcos, St. Vincent Ferrer Seminary; Principal Edith Grabozo, Tinorian Elementary School; Barangay Captain Manuel Siaotong, Brgy. Tinorian, Barotac Nuevo; Engr. Alfredo B. Panguiton, District Engineer at Dumangas, Iloilo, and Mr. Duffie B. Botavara, Municipal Engineer and Mr. Rogelio Jomantoc both representing the foundation.
According to Mrs. Sulit, the Neo-Filipino Creed made by Atty. Sulit has inspired her and other stakeholders of the project to initiate the endeavor, and see through the realization of its development goals. Part of the creed reads: “That every individual person is entitled to the mutual support of every other person in the pursuit of a productive full life, happiness, and the opportunity to lead in a free society where free enterprise, freedom of thought, freedom of action, and mutual exchange of values are of the essence.”
The foundation presently owns a parcel of land with an area covering 2,236 square meters and as of the date of this writing, the construction in the fencing of the area already started. All the parties have agreed to collaborate with each other in implementing this collaborative project which includes the construction of a grotto, a playground, retreat buildings, an auditorium, buildings for conferences/meetings and other facilities. These physical structures shall serve as gathering places for activities aimed at providing opportunities for the holistic and meaningful development of the people – an important step towards the realization of the profound vision of the late Atty. Sulit, a vision shared by his beloved Asuncion, as well as by so many persons who hold the conviction that, indeed, the greatest Himaya – praise and thanksgiving – is rightly reserved for those who serve with love and those who love to serve.

I agree Jon .. a place to visit when in Iloilo. The Old Iloilo Pier is another historical site within the area. Tani they'll refurbished this area and make it more attractive for tourist and historians alike who wish to visit our city. Monument of the British Consul Nicholas Loney is within the area, too. He's the Father of Philippine's Sugar Industry. Cheers to Sir Loney.
marsleg April 20th, 2006, 07:04 PM Iloilo rated ‘A’ in LGU rating system
The Province of Iloilo was recently rated "A" (Above Average) by an independent Rating Committee using the internationally-accepted LGU rating system of the LGU Guarantee Corporation (LGUGC). This means that the Province of Iloilo carries a low risk of default.
......

As always, the three designers never departed from their usual lines, proving to one and all that one need not resort to hypocrisy or cheap tricks in order to be noticed.
.....

Lalala ... hand in hand gid pirmi ang Guimaras and Iloilo ah. Liked that. Let's help each other to boost our region's economy. I hope Guimaras will attract more tourists pa gid this year. It's one of the most beautiful island in the Philippines. Its tourism industry is still untapped. There are many white beaches around the island plus its famous sweet mango pa. Go GUIMARAS! Go ILOILO!
kirby21 April 20th, 2006, 08:10 PM like these pics ... sort of candid and artistic ang dating. Parang with touch of Gaudi.
gaudi art is more of curls than this one though different colours' charaterictics of gaudi touch. If you've seen the Park in barcelona, yu'll surely loved Gaudi .. plus of course its famous architecture, Sagrada Familia.
If they'll paint the new Iloilo City Hall like that, I'm sure they'll be criticised by media and residents alike. I just couldn't imagine how will the people receive the looks, just in case. :)

kirby21 April 20th, 2006, 08:18 PM lovely Lambunao! Thanks for the pics.
gwapo gid man Lambunao, Mars. Di ba family roots mo from Lambunao? Though I knew you haven't stayed there at all. Try ko repost karon ang Japanese school sa Lambunao. It looks really nice. A big building in a mountain. I wish to see the whole of Lambunao pag may tiyempo ako pagpuli ko.
kirby21 April 20th, 2006, 08:20 PM Kudos to the provincial government of Iloilo. Hala Bira sa tanan !
Hala Bira gid eh! At least wala nagapaulihi ang province sa city. Whatever the city can offer, ginapatasan man sang probinsiya. Kudos to the present governor. Amidst anomalies, he's still standing tall and proud with all the achievements he had for the province of Iloilo.

Hi Jon. Still here but reading a lot of posts. It's taking my time. Budlay na karon nga lain-lain akon sabat. Anyway, nice to be back gid sa SSC after my week vacation.
JonJon75 April 20th, 2006, 08:25 PM Secret lang migo. PM ko lang da sa imo .. he he.
About the Iloilo Rotary Park, wala na .. pugad na ina dira sang mga kawatan no .. hehe .. joke lang gid. The park looks awful. Even the trees looks old and dying. I hope they'll revive it. The place is very relaxing as it is facing Guimaras Island. It used to be the best hangout area back in 80's for children and adults alike.
Bati ko man. Daw forest in the city na ina subong. Kabay pa nga kay-uhon nila ang Rotary Park. It's breezy and cool to stay there til night time. Besides, it's nice watching sunset in Rotary Park or in Fort San Pedro.
kirby21 April 20th, 2006, 08:30 PM The church we'll always be proud of. There's a long list of beautiful churches in Iloilo, and even in city alone, a good number of them is an absolute pride of the past civilisation. Salamat for posting the pictures, Lew.
I agree Mars. And so with Miag-ao Fortress Church, Jaro Cathedral, San Jose in Plaza Libertad, St Clements in La Paz, etc. All of them is a symbol of our civilisation and glorious past.
JonJon75 April 20th, 2006, 08:33 PM I agree Jon .. a place to visit when in Iloilo.
That's right. Wonder we all love British people :jk: . I wish to frequent the place pag-uwi ko .. when? No idea yet.
kirby21 April 20th, 2006, 08:37 PM wala ako sing ginhambal .. hihihi. Anyway, congrats Kirby. Bati ko manunumpa ka na sa watawat ng Gran Britanya in next two weeks? Ay ambut sa inyo ah. Nahisa ako .. hihihi. Dugay pa ako iya. Btw, ikaw gid to siguro damo reklamo ... well, it's our rights. Masanay na sila no?
lol. No comment ako Mars. Let bygone's be bygone's. Besides, it's our right so use it na lang.
The new scheme to transfer city hall offices to SM City is not a good idea to me at all. It's the people money ang makinabang lang da ang mall.
JonJon75 April 20th, 2006, 08:39 PM Good news Kianshi. Loved to see the fountain in a functional mode. Arroyo Foundation as everyone confirmed here, is one of the best symbol Iloilo has til the present. It's a definite fusion of past and present in Iloilo City. Hala Bira!
picture sang fountain once operational na siya ha. Cheers !
