Dinagyang’s Baile Latino de Iloilo

As a fitting finale to the Mardi Gras Parade, a Grand Mardi Gras Ball known as “Baile Latino de Iloilo” will be held at the Freedom Grandstand on January 23, 2010, from 4:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. The Mardi Gras Ball is a costumed party featuring an all-night ballroom dancing in front of the Freedom Grandstand. A live band will play samba, reggae, latin and salsa. Only costumed dancers, however, can join.

The Mardi Gras Parade will start at 2:00 P.M. on January 23 at Judging Area Number 4, in front of the Central Market. Participating groups will assemble at Rizal Street, in front of the University of Iloilo. A brief opening ceremony will be held to kick off the parade. The parade will traverse Iznart Street, Ledesma Street, Judging Area No. 3, Quezon Street, Gen. Luna Street, Judging Area No. 2, Iznart Street, J.M. Basa Street and finally, Freedom Grandstand. All motorized vehicles, however, will be required to exit at Guanco Street leading to Muelle Loeney.

The Mardi Gras Parade is a lively and exciting street parade with rhythmic dances performed by costumed dancers, accompanied by musical bands and colorful floats. It is an organic event of the Dinagyang Festival.

The following groups will participate in the parade: business corporations and companies, local government units (including barangays), tertiary schools, civic clubs and associations, civil society organizations and fraternities and sororities. Major dinagyang sponsors are one again expected to show off their beautiful floats and muses.

Awards await the best participating groups. Awards include Best Float, Best Music, Best Costume, Best Street Dance and Crowds Favorite. A grand winner and three runners-up will also be given trophies during the awarding ceremonies in the evening of January 24 at the Freedom Grandstand.

Police ready security preparations for 2010 Dinagyang
By Maricar M. Calubiran

Police are readying security preparations to ensure the peaceful celebration of the 2010 Dinagyang Festival by deploying close to 4,000 uniformed police personnel, cops from the 6th Regional Mobile Group, police auxiliaries, barangay tanods, police interns and NSTP students.

Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) director Sr. Supt. Melvin Mongcal said a total of 3,975 cops and force multipliers would beef up the security preparation during the festival. The number of policemen and force multipliers would be assigned in nine sectors or priority areas identified by the city police.

The security forces would be around during the Kasadyahan and Dinagyang tribes contest on Jan.23 and Jan. 24, respectively. There are other activities in-line with the yearly festival in honor of Señor Sto. Niño.

Mongcal said they have assumptions of disruptions from any group. The police have to prepare security plans rather than neglecting the whole thing. They are eyeing three possible groups who might disrupt the festival. However, the city director would not rather discuss them as they are mere assumptions.

Mongcal said bulk of the force would be assigned in the crowd control. In the crowd control alone, a total of 3,582 policemen and force multipliers would take charge in the four staging areas.

The force to be assigned in the crowd control would be augmented by some 100 intelligence police operatives. The security personnel assigned in the crowd control and covert operations would supplement the police personnel assigned to VIPs such as the foreign dignitaries, said Mongcal.

In yesterday’s media briefing, Mongcal clarified that non-uniformed police personnel assigned in covert operations during the festivity could not carry their guns because of the total gun ban. Non-uniformed police personnel would be protected by uniformed cops.

Mongcal added they have already “perfected” the Dinagyang security plan and its implementation. The security plans include the crowd control, posting of intelligence operatives, creation of an investigation team, VIP team, medical team, traffic team and stage security team.

Police personnel would also be assigned in 10 hotels in the city to monitor and same time protect the occupants. Each hotel is entitled to have two police security detail.

A team from the Explosive Ordnance Team, Special Weapons and Tactics team, Scene of the Crime Operatives, firefighting team and Civil Disturbance Team also comprised the security group. K-9 dogs would also be around to help the group determine the presence of explosives or bombs, added Mongcal.

The security preparations have four objectives. These are to check the presence of bombs, check the persons whether they are carrying firearms or any deadly weapon, properly secure the guests especially VIP and make traffic arrangement, said Mongcal.

The Mardi Gras Parade is a lively and exciting street parade with rhythmic dances performed by costumed dancers, accompanied by musical bands and colorful floats. It is an organic event of the Dinagyang Festival.

Awards await the best participating groups. Awards include Best Float, Best Music, Best Costume, Best Street Dance and Crowds Favorite. A grand winner and three runners-up will also be given trophies during the awarding ceremonies in the evening of January 24 at the Freedom Grandstand.

Here's something about RITM (Research Institue of Tropical Medicine). Taken from their website.

The Research Institute for Tropical Medicine was formally established in 1981 with the signing of E.O. 674, authorizing the creation of a research facility under the Department of Health. This was funded by a grant-in-aid from the Government of Japan, administered through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The RITM is tasked with planning and implementing research programs for infectious and/or tropical diseases. In 1989, through another grant-in-aid from the Japanese Government, the RITM Center for Training in Tropical Infectious Diseases was established for the expansion and integration of the RITM core facilities.

In November 2000, the Biologicals Production Service (BPS) of the Department of Health was formally merged with the RITM. The history of BPS dates back in the 18th century under the Spanish Regime when King Charles IV sent a scientific mission to the Philippines. The objective of the mission was to look into the smallpox problem in the Philippines. The mission established the vaccine laboratory in the country with smallpox vaccine as the first product. The vaccine laboratory was later expanded to produce other vaccines as well as anti-sera.

The merger of RITM and BPS gave rise to a more comprehensive and logical approach in the control of infectious and/or tropical diseases through research and biologicals production.

The Vision

We are a dedicated group of government health workers engaged in research and service to reduce morbidity and mortality from infectious and tropical diseases and to promote the health and well being of the Filipino people.

The Mission.

As the principal research arm of the Department of Health in infectious and tropical diseases, we will carry out high quality and multidisciplinary research programs to contribute significantly to the control of infectious and tropical diseases of public health importance locally and globally. We will emphasize research programs designed to respond to the needs of the poor and the underserved.

FUNCTIONS:

* Undertake research activities in the diagnosis, control and prevention of tropical diseases that are major causes of mortality and morbidity in the Philippines.
* Develop cost-effective strategies for the control of infectious/tropical diseases.
* Conduct clinical trials, according to accepted good clinical practice (GCP) guidelines, aimed at better understanding and control of tropical diseases.
* Conduct regular training courses for medical and paramedical personnel in the control of common tropical diseases in the country.
* Provide high quality tertiary care to both in-patients and out-patients suffering from tropical diseases included within the scope of the Institute's research activities.
* Participate in the technical cooperation programs with foreign government in research activities in the diagnosis, control and prevention of tropical diseases.
* Apply for, receive, and accept bequests, grants, and donation of funds, equipment, materials and services needed for the attainment of its objectives.
* Formulate plans of manufacturing of biological products for use of DOH
* Manufacture of vaccines and biological products for use of DOH
* Plan and execute research and development for the improvement of existing biological tests vaccines and anti-sera for human use according to accepted standards of current/certified good manufacturing practices (CGMP)
* Perform such other related activities as may be assigned by the Secretary of Health.

Facilities

Research and Training

The core research facilities of RITM housed in a two-storey building and are designed for the diagnosis of infectious and tropical diseases. The Institute is equipped with ample technical support for the conduct of valid and reliable scientific investigations. It also has the equipment support need to undertake its varied research activities. The following are the research core laboratories: 1) monoclonal and cell culture; 2) immunofluorescence; 3) scanning and electron microscopy; 4) high pressure liquid chromatography; 5) virology, bacteriology, mycobacteriology and parasitology examinations; 6) laboratory and field diagnosis of mosquito-borne diseases; and 7) molecular biology. It has a 35-bed research hospital consisting of an ICU, wards and isolation rooms. The hospital provides care of patients needing tertiary management of infectious and/or tropical diseases. The research hospital has a clinical and a blood-banking laboratory. The major units of the Institute are connected by a local area network having a core facility for Internet use.

The Center of Training in Tropical Infectious Diseases (TC or training center) is a two-storey building with the following facilities: 1) Conference Theater – this facility is a 250 person capacity auditorium ideal for use in plenary sessions during seminars and conferences. It has audio-visual equipments such as LCD projector and extra wide projection screen; 2) Laboratories – the TC has a laboratory for hands-on training and is provided with basic equipments required for the conduct of research and training in bacteriology, virology, parasitology, biochemistry and tissue culture; 3) Lecture rooms – there are three lecture rooms; each can accommodate 30-40 persons, capable of combining to accommodate 70 persons; 4) Dormitory – this facility is used by in-house staff and trainees which includes single, double and quadruple occupancy rooms (air-conditioning is limited only to single and double occupancy faculty/visiting researcher rooms); and 5) Dining hall – a self-service canteen which can accommodate about 100-110 persons.

Biologicals Production

This facility was designed to meet "good manufacturing practice" standards for the production of selected vaccines for local use as well packaging of filled vaccine vials from bulk.

UI-PHINMA: Emerging as a top university in Iloilo

THE University of Iloilo is set to become a top university in the province under the leadership of Philippine Investment Management (PHINMA), a 100% Filipino-owned firm that provides property and shelter, energy, financial services, roofing services, and now, education, through its subsidiaries.

“Through professional management, strong industry ties, and a strategy that is highly focused on those courses and skills that best prepare our students for sustained employment, PHINMA achieves a fine balance between academic quality and affordability. This allows us to provide the high quality education needed to improve the lives of our fellow Filipinos who need it the most,” says Ramon R. Del Rosario, President and Chief Executive Officer of PHINMA.

As the prime mover of PHINMA, Mr. Del Rosario’s philosophy is backed by years of experience, having been extensively involved in both the public and private sectors. Aside from holding the highest office in PHINMA, he is also the Chairman of the Makati Business Club. Prior to this, he served as the Philippine Secretary of Finance from 1992 to 1993, and was the EVP and Chief Finance Officer of San Miguel Corporation from 1986 to 1989.

Bringing PHINMA’s daunting goals to fruition is quite a challenge. It takes strategic thinking, extreme dedication and boundless energy – the combination of which is found in PHINMA Education Network’s President and CEO, Dr. Chito B. Salazar. Dr. Salazar is an Ateneo de Manila Management Engineering Graduate, Fordham University MA degree holder, American University PhD degree holder, former Washington Sycip Policy Forum Executive Director, former Netherlands and UN Institute of Environmental Studies Consultant, and Philippine Business for Education Foundation President.

“Upon purchasing a school, our primary goal is to evaluate and modify its management to align with PHINMA’s objectives. We undertake a comprehensive campaign to improve the school’s curriculum. We provide ways to develop our teaching and non-teaching employees through continuous learning and competitive salary schemes. We provide infrastructure and technology that will aid our students in their learning and improve operational processes,” says Dr. Salazar.

It is a tough endeavor, but a fruitful one as demonstrated by the vast improvements seen with Araullo University – PHINMA, whose board passing rates have become consistently the highest in Nueva Ecija since its purchase six years ago. The same can be said of PHINMA’s second school, Cagayan de Oro College – PHINMA, who has been awarded the title as a Center for Development in Criminology by CHEd, and is touted to be the number one school of Criminology in Visayas and Mindanao. Now, with the purchase of its two newest schools, the University of Pangasinan and the University of Iloilo, PHINMA is another step closer towards making it possible for all Filipinos to improve their lives through Education.

Indeed, between Mr. Del Rosario’s expertise in Business and Dr. Salazar’s deep knowledge of the Academe, the Iloilo community can now look forward to a new and better option to advance in life through progressive, solid and affordable education at the University of Iloilo – PHINMA.

i'm liking this university (UI) more and more. By the look of it, UI is becoming more and more competitive. It would not be far for PHINMA to invest huge amount to improve their facilties and programmes. UI is really set to challenge exisiting top universities of Iloilo. Give them 5 years, I'm pretty sure UI is a different university in everyone's perspectives. I hope the management will stick to their initial plan of expanding UI's facilities and programmes offered. Go UI! Time to shine again!:banana::banana:

I don't know with JBLFMU, but with UP-V and WVSU, cguro need nila is additional buildings/renovation of the existing buildings. Regarding laboratories and communication facilities I think 1:1 ang ratio sa students considering nga gamay lang ang gina-admit nga students...UP-V is sharing the budget with the entire UP system including PGH, same goes with WVSU, the Hospital also shares their budget, that's why the latter has undertaken some business-oriented projects to supplement their budget.

UP-V is giving much attention to research, same with WVSU, which gives both university (I think) additional incomes because of their researches, CPU is catching up..And I will be happy if SPU-I and UI will also invest sa research, though sa Nursing(Master's Degree) SPU-I is doing some research already..JBLFMU sa nabal-an ko, after naghost ang WVSU sang Interbational Research Conference(2008), they also hosted the International Maritime Research Conference. :-) Hope to see more research universities here in Iloilo, not just Teaching Universities for Iloilo to further claim the title as one of the Educational Hubs in the Philippines' South.

Biggest American Medical Mission in 2nd District today

Secretary Augusto Boboy Syjuco, Director General of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), and wife Second District Representative Judy Jalbuena Syjuco lead today’s biggest American Medical Mission.

Realized with local volunteer doctors, TESDA’s Health Care program and Allied Community Service Program Scholars, intended recipients are at least 3,000 constituents of the eight Second District towns.

Some 50 doctors, dentists and nurses primarily comprised the American Medical Mission Team, coming from the renowned Stanford University School of Medicine of California, USA.

Dr. Julieta Gabiola, Clinical Associate Professor of Stanford University and founder of ABC’s for Global Health is among the Filipino-Americans in the group.

In an interview, Gabiola shared with local reporters the unified effort put up by the medical team including MedLend Organization led by its Executive Administrator Page Hamilton.

Free medical services, free medicines alongside free medical education to the recipients are slated, added Lauren Maggio, Stanford University’s Medical Education Librarian.

“We are grateful of the opportunity given to us to be able to serve Iloilo… thank you to the local volunteer doctors and medical team, thank you to Congresswoman Judy Syjuco, thank you to Secretary Augusto Boboy Syjuco and TESDA. And thank you to Her Excellency, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo for making all these possible,” Gabiola said.

Venue of the three-day medical mission is the newly-renovated 50-bed General Hospital of the Western Visayas Sanitarium in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo.

A priority project of the Serbisyo Syjuco Program, the medical mission will conduct 25 major surgeries, 90 minor surgeries and 60 cataract eye operations. Also slated are 600 dental extractions, 900 out-patient consultations with free medicines, 1,000 blood glucose checks and 2,500 eye examinations with free eye glasses thereafter.

Major surgeries include Herniorraphy, Hemorrhoidectomy, Cleft Lip/Cleft Palate and OB Gyne cases with patients pre-screened and cleared for surgery to date.

Minor surgeries include cyst/mole removal, circumcision, bilateral tubal ligation and Pterydgium Removal.

“We will try to accommodate as many as our American team and Ilonggo doctors could help. But those who will not be able to be assisted on these days will certainly be prioritized in the ongoing medical missions of Serbisyo Syjuco. All they have to do is coordinate with their barangay captains or our hardworking coordinators of the Tagipusuon Foundation,” Secretary Syjuco said.

Representative Judy for her part has since prioritized health services with Serbisyo Syjuco behind districtwide continuing medical missions, feeding programs, free hospitalization and PhilHealth coverage for over 45,000 locals.

PDEA-6 tops nationwide performance evaluation

BY MONTESA GRIÑO-CAOYONAN

ILOILO City – The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency 6 (PDEA-6) topped the 2009 performance evaluation among the agency’s regional offices nationwide.

It shared the honors with PDEA-7.

PDEA-6 Director Paul Ledesma said his unit’s accomplishments in the campaign against illegal drugs were due to the support of all government agencies, tri-media, non-government agencies, and schools among others.

PDEA-6 has been successfully conducting raids and arrests last year. In August, it caused the destruction of some P1.5-million worth of metampethamine hydrochloride or shabu and marijuana in Camp Delgado.

Ledesma said the illegal drugs were confiscated from various PDEA-6 operations and were used as evidence in pursuing drug cases filed against the suspects in various courts.

The destruction of these prohibited drugs was part of the agency’s standard operating procedure so that these substance could no longer be of use or sold, Ledesma added.

One proof of PDEA-6’s strong support from the community was the successful staging of an anti-illegal drugs march on September 2009. More or less 50,0000 participants composed of students, professionals, school heads, government agencies, and non-government offices joined./PN

Ilonggo soldier among Filipino peacekeepers in quake-hit Haiti

ILOILO – An Ilonggo is among the Philippines’ 157 contingent to the United Nations’ peacekeeping force in Haiti, the Caribbean island-nation hit by a powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake the other day.

The family of Philippine Air Force’s Sgt. Marlon Pestaño in Sta. Barbara town is praying for his safety.

Lolita Pestaño said her 37-year-old son had been working with the United Nations in Haiti since August 2009. He was supposed to wrap up his tour of duty there next month.

The Pestaños said contacting the sergeant became difficult after the killer-tremor struck Haiti, one of the most impoverished nations in the world. Communication lines were cutoff.

In Manila, Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner Jr., Armed Forces of the Philippines spokesman, said the military received a report that one of the four missing members of the Philippine delegation to Haiti has been rescued.

Corporal David Catacutan was rescued by members of the Philippine contingent at the Montana Hotel.

Brawner said that based on initial medical examination, Catacutan sustained bruises but was now recovering at the headquarters of the Philippine peacekeeping mission in Haiti.

Brawner said the family “has been informed about the rescue.”

He added that families of three others still missing were also informed and that “we remained hopeful that we will be able to rescue the three others believed trapped on the second floor of the Christopher building.”

The three -- Data Processing Technician 3rd Class Perlie Panangue of the Philippine Navy, Sgt. Janice Arocena of the Philippine Air Force, and Sgt. Eustacio Bermudes Jr. of the Philippine Army -- worked as clerks at the UN offices on the second floor of the Christopher Hotel, Brawner said.

“We believe that they were on overtime, they were doing overtime because the earthquake happened after 5 p.m. when most of the United Nations workers in that building already left for their barracks or for their respective homes,” Brawner said.

The rest of the Philippine contingent has been accounted for./PN

The new gems of Dinagyang in 2010

Dinagyang “in the Hall of Fame” does not cease to amaze. It is the reason why it still continues to spark interest, attract attention, elicit curiosity, stimulate involvement, and remain enjoyable these past years.

While some locals would say, “Amo man ‘na guihapon,” referring to the yearly presentation as just a commonplace routine (which was maybe true several years ago), more recent editions of the celebration showed a lot more than just street dance and drum beat.

Tourists and regular visitors could attest, they have experienced a one of a kind spectacle that evolved and which only Dinagyang could measure up to. The recognition as the country’s best tourism event was deserved and earned with merit. The Dinagyang of today is a festival in the truest sense of the word because its latest version becomes always its best ever every year.

There are two new events worth checking out in terms of public interest: the Little Ms. Iloilo Dinagyang and the Model Ati Dinagyang Warrior. For sure, it is the parents who would be more excited for their daughters joining the search for the junior version of the beauty pageant. Cute little darlings walk the ramp with pretty bouffant skirts and just like their lady counterparts learn how to plaster a steady smile on their faces every time they come on stage. The contest intends to make little misses learn more about grace under pressure and self-confidence.

The Model Ati Dinagyang Warrior is a breakaway from the usual male counterpart of personality contests. Instead of adding a Mr. Dinagyang in the ladies’ beauty search, an original and homegrown activity was introduced involving organic tribe performers who could best display terpsichorean talent with flair and endurance. Contestants wear dark brown body paint and tribal costumes, and perform a sample of their tribe repertoire. It is virtually a tribal dance competition among tribe leaders and squad leaders.

This year, one of the new big events is the Ilonggo Arts Festival which consists of six distinct activities such as cheerleading, choral poetry theatre, folk dance, choral, dance sport, and painting. It will be launched with the installation of the “golden salakot” as the art festival emblem. The salakot with six drop cloths in various colors representing each of the activities will be hoisted altogether by the members of the festival committees to signal the opening of the event.

On its second year of revival, Tambor Trumpa Martsa Musika – the coined name of the drum corps contest which used to have the elementary school and high school components, take on a third category with the participation of the marching bands. Presently, five marching bands, four drum-bugle-and-lyre groups, and six drum-and- bugle corps have confirmed their participation.

The opening program of Tambor Trumpa hopes to restage the Salvo of a Thousand Drums which failed to take off last year due to inclement weather. This time, the salvo will attempt to gather all the fifteen participating groups and the 16 Ati tribes to meet the number and present a grand opening ceremony. Drummers, instrumentalists, and majorettes will perform in front of the Freedom Grandstand for a synchronized drum rolls and instrumentation to the beat of “Hala Bira, Iloilo”. The multitude shall perform for at least seven minutes under the baton of the principal band conductor. It shall be a fitting opening of the three-day highlights of Dinagyang.

Students from the University of the Philippines mount a fashion design competition and show slated Friday, January 15 at the UPV Quadrangle. Local designers are given the opportunity to introduce their art works and promote their trade. There is a band providing music to the show.

Two motor shows are scheduled during the Dinagyang week - one at the Robinsons Carpark and another in front of the Freedom Grandstand. Included in the exhibition are audio facilities like car stereos, speakers, music and video players, and subwoofers. Car enthusiasts and audiophiles are expected to flock in the two exhibitions.

Dancing sweepers will take the center street in between contesting groups of both the Kasadyahan and Ati Contests. They will provide intermission entertainment while cleaning up the performance areas with simple dance steps to go with the Dinagyang music. They may start the trend and introduce the new genre of sweeping dance.

The guideline prepared by members of the Core Working Committee, described the Dinagyang Sponsors Mardi Gras as “a lively and exciting street parade with rhythmic dance movements performed by costumed dancers and accompanied by musical bands and colorful floats.”

It is a promotional accommodation for groups which wanted to be part of the festival but are non-competing in the main events. The parade provides additional mileage for big sponsors and exposure for the minor ones. This is a revenue generating activity which hopefully could gather many benefactors and allow wider participation of donors. The activity is set in the afternoon of Saturday right after the Kasadyahan competition.

Assembly area is along Rizal Street starting in front of the University of Iloilo and extending up to General Hughes. The parade shall take the reverse flow of the Kasadyahan and shall first pass the judging stage in front of the Iloilo Grand Hotel for the opening program. The Mardi Gras proceeds toward Quezon-Ledesma Stage for the second judging, then the Capitol Area for the third and finally end at the Freedom Grandstand for an all-night street party where a live band plays samba and other Latin beats.

The partnership with Mang Inasal was a very good alternative for the national promotional campaign which was scrapped due to monetary constraint. Instead of sending again a tribe to Metro Manila for mall tour performances, a novel marketing collaboration was concocted where a food store chain commission giant billboards in Manila, Cebu, and Davao to carry the Dagoy-Chicken Inasal campaign. Like Mark Bautista, Dagoy suddenly becomes a commercial endorser for Mang Inasal.

Part of the deal is publicity through print ad in the national papers during Dinagyang. Mang Inasal makes use of its two-hundred stores nationwide for posting of the 2010 posters. In exchange the festival marketing committee recognizes the food chain company as one of the event major sponsors.

Kiosk structures in the food festival areas are going to shed the shanty look for long straight modular layout to make the selling area look neatly arranged. Garbage segregation shall be required of all stall operators and portable toilets installed in the vicinity of the food fest.

In the pipeline are two social projects: a soup kitchen sort of scheme and the scholarship plan for the aetas. A mobile kitchen is to be deployed to distribute food in barangays for children and the elderly. The project calls for collaboration between the foundation and the Philippine National Red Cross in cooperation with the City Social Welfaare Department. Scholarship for deserving Ati is being hatched for the next school year where they shall be encouraged to get formal education. This may be coordinated with the sponsoring school and the DepEd.

Quite a number of new sponsors have come forward offering support for the festival. Though the amounts were not as big as the lockout deals before, they are as much appreciated as the sum total of all these small contributions have filled the budgetary requirement of the events.

A large number of the press, most of them photo journalists and many coming from outside Iloilo City, have applied for accreditation to cover the activities in the four performance areas. Many want to be assigned to the Freedom Grandstand but the Media Relations committee has to distribute them to other stages because of the deluge of requests which cannot be accommodated by just one area.

These are indications of things to come and looking at these innovations, the 2010 Iloilo Dinagyang Festival promises to be amazingly wonderful!

Dinagyang to showcase Ilonggo
students’ entrepreneurial skills
THE annual Dinagyang Festival, now on its 42nd year, will not only be a showcase of Ilonggo history and culture but likewise an avenue to discover and promote entrepreneurial skills of students here.

This year the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI), City Tourism and Development Office (CTDO) and the Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines Inc. are joining forces for the "Estudyante Negosyante" that will run from Jan. 22-24.

This school-based activity aims to further encourage students to take charge and make the most of their resources by transforming them into viable enterprises and let them experience the economic benefits of the festival.

The organizers have identified the area in front of the Casa Plaza Building as their market area. They will be provided with kiosks and electrical power for three days all for free.

While earning, the participants will also have the chance to bring home prizes as the organizers decided to award the three best booths or kiosks based on the physical appearance of their booths, their marketing attitude and for the total number of Dagoy dolls sold.

The Dagoy dolls will be provided to them by the foundation on a consignment basis. (PNA)

I was researching on the mountains of Panay and I read a lot of articles claiming that Mt. Madja-as (Madyaas) is the highest peak of the island. This is wrong.

The highest peak is Mt. Nangtud (7,232 ft.(2205m)) somewhere in Antique. Followed by Mt. Baloi (7,049 ft.(2149m)). I don't know why people keep on claiming that Mt. Madyaas is the highest peak of Panay. Hayz.

I think because Madya-as is something of "The Great mountain of the Gods" like Olympus for the Greeks does. Probably its association with the Maragtas myth that may have affected it.

Anyway, how high is Madya-as peak?

MI carries Dinagyang as part of nationwide promotion :banana:

Battle of municipalities in Kasadyahan Festival

By Lydia C. Pendon

IT will be a battle of municipal festivals in Iloilo showcasing the best performance and the town’s best practices during the Dinagyang Kasadyahan Festival competition January 23, 2010.

Kasadyahan, the twin festival of Dinagyang Ati-atihan competition and considered as one of the highlights of the week-long festival, is expected to bid Dinagyang Festival goodbye with its last performance this January.

City tourism officer Benito Jimena disclosed that Kasadyahan has evolved through the years and they are considering it to become a full festival of festivals to be held either on April for the Semana sg Iloilo celebration or during the Tourism Month celebration in October.
Jimena said Kasadyahan has become a major cultural event completely different from that of the ati-based performances. The dance drama focuses on celebrating the goodness of the Creator for the bounties given the Ilonggos through a grand dancing parade filled with color and grace.

This Dinagyang year, Kasadyahan will be participated in by seven local government units and two schools and municipal mayors and other local officials will lead and usher their entries to the competition,

Dr. Eden Deriada, chairperson of the Kasadyan committee, said the competition is composed of performance at the four judging areas and street dancing in between the judging areas. The four judging areas are at the Freedom Grandstand, provincial capitol, Quezon and Ledesma streets and Iznart street.

The street dance competition will be performed in three street stretches such as JM Basa-Arsenal streets to corner Iznart and Solis streets; corner Gen. Luna Quezon streets to Quezon corner Delgado streets; and corner Ledesma Izanart streets to Iznart corner de Leon streets.

The competing Kasadyahan groups are Tribu Tinuom headed by Cabatuan Mayor Ramon Yee as tribe leader, Tribu Tangyan headed by Igbaras Mayor Jaime Esmeralda, Tribu Patubas headed by Barotac Viejo Mayor Raul C. Tupas, Tribu Kasag headed by Banate Mayor Carlos Cabangal Jr., Tribu Pantat headed by Zarraga Mayor Gregorio Brazas, Tribu Jimanban headed by New Lucena National High School head, Dr. Charlie Coronado, Tribu Tubong-Tubong headed by Tubungan Mayor Vicrtor Tabaquirao, Tribu Mandurriaonon headed by Dr. Azucena Falales, and Tribu Tambobo headed by Ajuy Mayor Juan Roxas Alvares.

I found out that the list of the tribe names on the website I think you just browsed on were history of the tribes who participated 2008, and at that time, Bola bola didn't join the competition. AFAIK, according to the mountaineers, it is an exposed granite or basalt outcrop. Either way, it is still classified as igneous though or volcanic in origin.

Anyway, regarding the tectonic areas...it reminds me of that series of earthquakes that rattled Iloilo in 2004 or 2005 I think. The 1948 Lady Kaykay, the strongest in Panay recorded history, was believed to be tectonic in origin and its center was thought to be somewhere in Antique.

^^sa Culasi, Antique... same area sg pag earthquake on June 14, 1990...
I experienced that one and inde ko gid malipatan what happened that afternoon kay biskan diri sa Jaro kusog man katama at Intensity 6.

Panay Earthquake - 14 June 1990
On 14 June 1990, an earthquake measuring 7.1 in the Richter Scale hit Panay Island at 3:41 P.M., killing 8 and injuring 41 people. The epicenter was located at 11.34°North latitude; 122.10° East longitude, in the vicinity of Culasi, Antique. The depth was computed to be 15 kilometers. It was generated by fault movement in the collisional zone off western Panay Island.

The tremor was felt in the following places (in PEIScale):

Intensity VII Culasi, Antique; Libacao, Aklan
Intensity VI Balete, Kalibo, Madalag, Numancia, Altavas & Makato in Aklan; Sigma & Cuartero in Capiz, and; Calinog in Iloilo.
Intensity V Northern part of Negros Island
Intensity IV Romblon and the rest of Negros Island
Intensity III Cebu City; Taal; Mayon; Palo, Leyte
Intensity II Cagayan de Oro & Camiguin Island

A quick response team dispatched to the area reported the following observations:

Culasi, Antique

Andrew Tan will invest US$1 billion in the Philippines

BULL MARKET, BULL SHEET By Wilson Lee Flores (The Philippine Star) Updated January 11, 2010 12:00 AM

Andrew Tan of Global Alliance Group, Inc.: “There are various sunrise industries that the Philippines can focus on to become globally competitive.”
The optimist sees the rose and not its thorns; the pessimist stares at the thorns, oblivious of the rose.
— Kahlil Gibran

No pessimist ever discovered the secret of the stars, or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new doorway for the human spirit.
— Helen Keller

All things are possible until they are proved impossible and even the impossible may only be so, as of now.
— Pearl S. Buck

A few years ago when I asked “rags-to-riches” realty billionaire Manny Villar what he thought about economists and investment bankers’ forecasts about the Philippine economy, Senator Villar told me: “Wilson, it is best to ask and look at the business leaders, if they are investing and where. Entrepreneurs are the more accurate barometer of an economy’s future.”

According to Forbes magazine’s 2009 list of the Philippines’ wealthiest tycoons, Megaworld/Empire East/Emperador founder Andrew Tan of Global Alliance Group, Inc. is ranked No. 4 and the youngest among them, next only to Henry Sy of SM Group, Lucio Tan of Fortune Tobacco/Philippine Airlines/Asia Brewery and Jaime Zobel de Ayala of Ayala/BPI/Globe Telecom.

This writer recently had an exclusive interview with the 57-year-old Tan about his views on the Philippine economy’s 2010 prospects. He said he is “very bullish and optimistic.”

When asked about the possibility of chaos with the first-ever Philippine government attempt to computerize the May elections, Tan replied: “I believe there will be no chaos and that the election will be okay. I do not comment on politics, but I see computerization of the election process as good for stability and social harmony. The faster the results are counted and hopefully more accurate, the better. Problems in the past usually arose when there were delays in the counting process.”

Who will Andrew Tan vote for? Whose election win would be best for a more progressive Philippine economy? Tan responded: “I am not a political person, so I cannot comment on politics. However, I am very positive the coming elections will be good for the Philippine economy, because the major candidates are qualified to be president.”

When asked how much his Alliance Global Group, Inc. would invest in the Philippine economy, the self-made taipan took several minutes to make mental calculations regarding his diversified Megaworld, Empire East, McDonald’s, Emperador/Generoso/The Bar liquors and other businesses. He then replied: “We at Alliance Global will invest over US$1 billion in the next three years in the Philippine economy, because I am optimistic about the growth prospects. We should all work hard and sustain this momentum of progress.”

What about the US economy’s future for recovery? Andrew Tan smiled and responded: “I’m not qualified to analyze the US economic situation, but I know that the rest of the world is now looking at Asia and at booming China. Asia will lead the whole world out of this recent financial crisis — that is the view of most businesspeople. China has suffered a lot in the past 100 years due to wars and colonial interventions, so now they are so driven. Asia has a great future; we here in the Philippines will benefit from this Asian prosperity.”

How can the Philippines solve our perennial budget-deficit problem, now at record levels and which this writer believes is due to so much government waste, excessive corruption, poverty and unemployment? Andrew Tan replied: “My personal view is that there are various sunrise industries that the Philippines as a society can focus on to become globally competitive and make the economy truly progressive.”

He continued: “The Philippine tourism industry now reportedly has US$5 billion in revenues a year. I see this sector’s immense growth potential. It could grow to as big as $20 billion a year, as long as the private business sector can be encouraged to actively participate more and invest. To achieve this goal, support of government is very crucial in the continuous development of infrastructure and other basic requirements.”

When can the Philippines hit his forecast of $20 billion a year for tourism and what are his contributions to this sunrise industry? What about the lingering peace-and-order problems that have for years stunted Philippine tourism growth? Tan said, “This can be possible in six to seven years. On the peace-and-order issue, everybody’s been raising this issue since before and I think it can be okay, too. Our Alliance Global Group and Megaworld, we’re investing in a 40-hectare area in PAGCOR City beside Manila Bay. We will build a world-class theme park there, plus hotels and other exciting projects good for Philippine tourism. Other areas we’re planning tourism ventures in are Iloilo, Cebu, and mostly in central Philippines. I hope the government improves the tourist destinations and basic facilities. Maybe some of these government properties can be managed and upgraded by the private sector.”

Tan added, “As of now, most of Philippine society looks towards the remittances of overseas Filipino workers or OFWs for about $16 billion per year of revenues. This is a pillar of the Philippine economy and very important. However, I believe the economy should strengthen other areas for more revenues such as the fast-growing business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, which we at Megaworld Corporation helped pioneer. I see the BPO industry growing to become a $10 billion-a-year industry for the Philippines. At Eastwood City in Quezon City, we pioneered in 1998 to 1999 encouraging the government’s Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) to give incentives to investments in the service sector like BPOs instead of the past focus on manufacturing industries. We invited PEZA officials to fly with us to Bangalore in India to see what they’re doing there.”

“There are other areas with huge growth potential as revenue sources for the Philippine economy that I’m not knowledgeable about; these are the fields of mining and agriculture. Those two sectors are also very important and could be sources of a lot of good news for the Philippine economy in 2010 and beyond,” concluded Tan.

^^^^when it comes to certain aspects of the philippine stock exchange, i'm positively bearish. but when it comes to stocks concerning the philippine real estate, i'm bullish. and these are among the many reasons: ayala, megaworld, sm prime holdings, and lately, eton properties.

in many ways, i feel like it's the golden age of philippine real estate. and the bpo is one of the huge reasons for it. it led to unprecendented demands for office space and in turn, led to huge demands for condos for the suddenly moneyed bpo higher ups/yuppies. couldn't be happier for this sector of our economy!

Gapamatuod nga ang Robinsons Place Iloilo is doing good.

Universal Robina’s profit soars to P4.1b
by Jenniffer B. Austria

Universal Robina Corp., the biggest maker of snack foods in the country, booked a net profit of P4.1 billion in 2009, up 11 times than P341 million in 2008, on higher sales, lower foreign exchange losses and gain from financial assets.

URC, a unit of JG Summit Holdings Inc. of taipan John Gokongwei, said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that consolidated sales for the year ending in September rose 11 percent to P50.4 billion from P45.4 billion a year ago. Sales of the branded consumer foods segment jumped 14.5 percent to P38.1 billion to boost revenues.

URC attributed the higher revenues of branded consumer food segment to increased net sales in domestic operations. Sales of the snack food division climbed 12.4 percent on year. Beverage sales value went up by 2.4 percent while those of grocery products improved 8.9 percent to P2.9 billion.

International sales surged 24.4 percent to P11.5 billion from P9.26 billion a year ago, lifted by higher revenues from Singapore, Hong Kong and Vietnam.

Sales of agro-industrial rose 4.9 percent to P5.8 billion while revenues commodity foods segment increased 6.3 percent to P5.4 billion.

Meanwhile, Robinsons Land Corp., the property unit of JG Summit, posted a net income of P3.27 billion in the year ending September.

“Robinsons Land’s various business units managed to outperform because of our deep understanding of the market, commitment to operational efficiencies and a healthy balance sheet,” Frederick Go, Robinsons Land president and chief operating officer, in a statement said.

The commercial centers division accounted for P4.21 billion of real estate revenues for the year against P3.69 billion in 2008.

Robinsons Land attributed the 14-percent increase in revenues to newly-opened malls—Robinsons Place Tacloban, Robinsons Cabanatuan, Robinsons Pulilan and Robinsons Place Davao.

It noted rental growths from Robinsons Place Manila, Robinsons Place Iloilo, Robinsons Sta. Rosa Market and Robinsons Otis.

Robinsons Land opened four new malls from October to December last year—Robinsons Place General Santos, Robinsons Place Dumaguete, Robinsons Ilocos Norte and Robinsons Cybergate Cebu—to end the year with 29 outlets nationwide.

The company’s office buildings division reported gross revenues of P1.1 billion, up 26-percent growth, while the hotels united posted revenues of P1.04 billion, slightly lower from P1.14 billion in 2008.

Revenues of the residential division stood at P4.37 billion while net income before tax hit P1.36 billion in 2009.

The property company earlier lined up three residential condominium projects this year, namely the second tower of the iconic Sonata Private Residences at the Ortigas Business Center, the first tower of The Magnolia Residences in New Manila, Quezon City and Signa Designer Residences in Makati with Security Land Corp.

Segue lang...

Hayz.

On one hand, I discovered the following facts:

Mt. Madja-as - regarded as one of the most difficult mountain to climb in the country.

Mt. Manaphag - the iconic mountain of Pan de Azucar Island.

http://images.death327.multiply.com/image/1/photos/126/500x500/18/concepcion-256.JPG?et=y0cD6CJI5Xrs8IFF35%2C8qg&nmid=308059996

-- considered as the steepest montain in the country.:D

^^ Ang Pan de Azucar hambal ka tita ko... almost all year round, wala guid na da kuno nagakadula ang CLOUD FORMATION sa middle sang mountain encircling it then exposing the peak... daw amo na bala ang makita mo sa mga japanese animations like DBZ nga mga views haw... then kung mag hapon kuno naga gal-om na nga area sang mountain kis-a may ara man lightnings... bisan summer kuno ara na da gyapon ang clouds and SWERTE mo guid na kuno according sa locals nila da kung makita mo ang whole mountain/peak without the cloud formation... then dira kuno sa area nga ina sang pan de azucar, it rains everyday... pero sa dira lang nga area wherein the clouds form....

^^ That third floor space is quite huge. Perhaps they could use it for BPO services. After all, Robinsons Iloilo is already PEZA accredited to be an IT center. However, if I were Robinsons, if they do want to expand their business in Iloilo, they could think about optimizing the use of the parking building into something more profitable.

Hmmm...what's keeping them? I think the city is already in dire need of hotels and convention centers. They could use it as a future building for an IT Building instead or hotel and IT building (Cybergate). Both of these sectors in the real estate is in demand in Iloilo as of the moment. And if they are having problems with electricity, I don't think its a major factor already.

What business brings you here in Iloilo?

Anyway, Rob Iloilo needs a good facelift. A really good one. What they did with the main entrance is not enough. Besides, maybe the upper market of Iloilo will give them another look.

^^ Oh Kiddo... nothing... i just would like to participate... why? is it a surprise for you to find me here in Iloilo thread?
