The former residence of Senator Ruperto Montinola in Fajardo Street.

La lang, I saw this at the Montinola family's website:

kay former senator montinola ni nga balay gle? way back, 1960s, my grandparents brought this house, kag dira nag stay ang mom namon and her siblings for a couple of years. our grandfather's plan was to convert that building into a hospital, but it didn't pushed through kay ang eldest daughter who was the MD in their family, opted to practice sa US.

i don't know the reason why they also sold it later on.

Lets us not let this news put us down.:lol:

why should we? kadamo na ga sulod nga BPOs sa city subong, despite the lack of infrastructures, IT parks and undepenadable power supply. how much more, pag ready na ang CFPP, plazuela, ayala and megaworld?

Why should we? We're not even evicted from the Top 10. There are factors that made the ranking. There are more socio-economic factors than meets the eye for the rankings.

Just like the Philippine Cities competitiveness chuva back then. I really wonder why some of the forumers make a big fuss and pride on these rankings? While these are used by policy-makers in order to improve or remove certain things in the local economy? They do not make a big fuss and brag it all the way to tralala-land since it is a tool, not a trophy for crying out loud!

I hope some of us would be enlightened that these rankings were made to grade the policy-makers and managers. Just as like class records. Have a second look please.

Just as like Aliwan. Why do we even bother create a big fuss about it while other regions do not? We became so rabid that those harsh comments backfires at us. Offensive to others turns to be offensive to ourselves as well!

So again, why even bother?

at least, cguro we could assess our selves kung diin pa ang weakness sang city for us to be number 1 sa list. this is actually an assessment for us to improve what is needed to be improved. so far, we fared well sa list, but we could do better the next time around.

Dreaming to live in Camella?

Head on to Camella now and experience the tranquil community lifestyle that it offers to its homeowners. Premier urban living has never been this exclusive, classy, and unique with Camella, a subsidiary of Vista Land and Lifescapes, Inc. with over thirty years of reputation as the Philippines’ leading real estate leader. Envisioning and realizing wonderful communities became Camella’s significant goal.

In Iloilo, the 300-hectare Savannah located at Pulo Maestra Vita, Oton and Lessandra townhouse community at Gorriceta Avenue, Pavia are two premier communities of Camella that caters to Ilonggo families.

With this year’s 10th year anniversary of Savannah as the most promising and bestselling community in the region, we ask around what homeowners realized upon living in Savannah and listen to some of their opinions about what makes the community their dream residence...

“For many years living with my family here in Savannah, we appreciate everyday as the best day we have since everything we need for a community is here: safe, secure, a lot of amenities, serene ambiance, and a community school for my kids (Georgia International Academy),” Ellen explained, a resident of Trails.

“We made the right choice of choosing Camella as our home and a place where my family can grow, appreciate the friendly neighborhood, our beautifully-built house, and exclusivity of the community,” says Robert, a father of two and a businessman who owns a home in Glen A.

Dreaming to live in Camella?“Everywhere you look around at Savannah is a treat to the eyes. My kids enjoy playing in the park without worries, they can visit the clubhouse and swim anytime or have biking outside,” says Rowena, a working mom who loves to see her kids safe and secure every afternoon she gets home at The Crest.

“My daughter who works as a nurse in America wanted me and my husband to live in Camella after our retirement. She wanted us to live in a peaceful community and nice house like those in Savannah Trails,” says Lucy, a retired teacher we met at the Camella business office.

“For me, Savannah is the best place where I could start building my dreams and live with my family. I am amazed with the various model houses, enclaves, and house and lot packages that they offer to suit what I can afford,” Antonio told us while checking out a Camella brochure. He recently arrived from Italy for a one month vacation.

“Lessandra fits my budget to own a nice and cozy house. It offers more than I could ask for since Lessandra is also an uprising townhouse community with a lot of amenities like a usual Camella community,” Maribeth enthusiastically said while being assisted by a Camella staff for the processing of her documents and pay her reservation fee.

There’s so much more that Camella can offer for everyone. It is a community that upholds exclusivity and a perfect place to start building your dreams.

Old Iloilo capitol now a national historical site

Iloilo City (13 April) -- The Old Capitol building of the Province of Iloilo is now a national historical site.

This after the National Historical Institute (NHI) formally recognized the Old Capitol as a historical landmark through a marker installed on its walls.

The text of the marker in Filipino reads: "Dating casa real na yari sa kahoy at bato noong panahon ng mga Espanyol.

The unveiling of the marker was done on April 11, 2010, exactly 109 years after the old capitol became the seat of the civil government of Iloilo on April 11, 1901, as stated in the marker.

The unveiling ceremony coincided with the founding anniversary celebration of the province of Iloilo dubbed "Semana Santa sang Iloilo".

NHI Chairman Ambeth Ocampo and Executive Director Ludovico Baduy, Governor Niel Tupas, Mayor Raul Tupas, Atty. Joenar Pueblo and other provincial capitol officials attended the event.

Ocampo asked capitol officials to take care of the marker which is the first step in the preservation of the building as landmark of Iloilo. (PIA)

So again, why even bother?

yup instead of feelign sorry over the slide in ranking, we should be more than happy that the city is now in full swing in its BPO industry a year or two after it has became the "it" place for BPO.

pero hopefully it should look further beyond BPOs, provide the infras it lacks and improve the existing ones. even those not BPO related

TMC invests P700M in Iloilo hospital

By Francis Allan L. Angelo

A METRO Manila-based hospital will bring in more than P700 million and the latest technology in health care as it embarks on its expansion in Iloilo City.

Dr. Alfredo R.A. Bengzon, The Medical City (TMC) president and CEO, said their expansion in Iloilo City and other parts of the country aims to bring world class services to the rest of the country.

TMC has assumed management and operations of the Great Saviour International Hospital (GSIH) in Molo, Iloilo City and the Global Medical Network (GMN) in anticipation of the full purchase of these facilities before 2010 ends.

TMC has also acquired existing sister sites of GSIH and GMN in Luzon which includes the Mercedes Medical Center in Pampanga and a network of outpatient clinics in Dagupan, Olongapo and Cavite.

Bengzon said they found the network of GSIH and GMN, headed by Dr. Evangeline C. Johnson, ideal for their expansion plans, reason why they made the purchase.

Initially, TMC has allocated P150 million for the upgrading of the existing hospital building.

Another P600 million will be spent on acquisition of latest equipment such as a 4D CAT scan and construction of additional wards.

“Some P400 million will be set aside for the Iloilo hospital while the rest will be spent on sister facilities in Luzon,” Bengzon said.

Among the latest medical technology that TMC will bring is the regenerative medicine program which used stem cell technology in curing cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

Meanwhile, Dr. Johnson dispelled reports that she sold GSIH because it is bleeding financially.

Johnson told The Daily Guardian that it was TMC that approached her as they found her network suitable to their expansion plans.

“No, we’re not losing! Just like any entity, we also experienced birth pains but we hurdled past them. Would a top corporation like TMC buy a bankrupt hospital? They will not buy the hospital if they don’t see any promising results. TMC came to us because we fit in their puzzle,” Johnson said.

Johnson said she had to let go of GSIH, which she described as her “baby”, because it will help her achieve her vision of a world class hospital.

“Just like a baby, we have to let go of the hospital so it can grow as we have envisioned. The hospital was never for sale, but if it’s for the good of the community (that we let go of it), why not (sell)?” Johnson added.

Bengzon said they also looked into the controversies (such as the alleged Tricare and Philhealth scams) involving Johnson and her medical network but they were convinced that the hospital and its management had nothing to do with such issues

Bengzon said Johnson will be a consultant to TMC while they wrap up the full acquisition of the entire medical system.

GBPC, electric oops sign
power supply contract
SEALED
By Francis Allan L. Angelo

PANAY Electric Co. (Peco), the sole power distributor in Iloilo City, is set to sign an electric power purchase agreement (EPPA) with an independent power producer next month.

Jesus N. Alcordo, president of Global Business Power Corp. (GBPC), said they are wrapping up their negotiations with Peco before both parties can sign the EPPA.

GBPC, a member of the Metrobank Group, is constructing a 164-megawatt coal-fired power plant at Brgy. Ingore, LaPaz, Iloilo City. The plant will be operated by GBPC’s subsidiary, Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC).

“We expect to sign an EPPA with Peco early May when we have concluded our negotiations with them. Peco’s baseload demand is more than 60MW,” Alcordo said.

Yesterday, GBPC signed EPPAs with six electric cooperatives belonging to the Panay-Guimaras Power Supply Consortium (PPSC).

Iloilo Electric Cooperative (Ileco) 1 will buy 4MW from PEDC, Ileco 2 – 10MW, Ileco 3 – 7MW, Antique Electric Cooperative (Anteco) – 7MW, Aklan Electric Cooperative (Akelco) – 12MW and Capiz Electric Cooperative (Capelco) – 8MW.

While they are negotiating with electric cooperatives and distribution utilities in Negros Island, Alcordo said they will prioritize the needs of Panay consumers.

Alcordo said they expect demand for power in Panay, particularly Iloilo City, to surge when the coal-fired power plant operates.

“There are a lot of suppressed demands in Iloilo City and Panay because of high prices of power. But when the coal-plant operates, which will bring down electricity rates, we expect more call centers and investments to enter the island which will cause a spike in demands for power,” he said.

The GBPC honcho said their generation charge or cost of producing electricity will go down by at least P2 per kilowatt-hour once the coal-fired power plant goes on-line later this year.

“Our generation rate in the coal-fired power plant in Cebu is even lower than the rates of the newest entrant. It’s all up to the Energy Regulatory Commission to approve the rates in our EPPAs with the cooperatives,” Alcordo added.

Alcordo led the EPPA signing at Iloilo Business Hotel along with GBPC senior vice president and chief finance officer Jaime Azurin and PEDC director Felipe A. Uygongco.

Officials of electric cooperatives who signed and witnessed the event were Edgar Diaz (Capelco general manager), Oscar Acolentaba (Capelco board president), Redmond Roquios of Ileco 2, Rogelio Solania (Ileco 2 board president), Wilfred Billena (Ileco 1 general manager and PPSC president), Efren Esclavilla (Anteco board president), Ludovico Lim of Anteco, Wayne T. Malilay (Akelco board president), Chito R. Peralta (Akelco general manager) and Consorcia Peñaranda (Ileco 3 officer-in-charge).

Ang iya ka Sunstar nga news

Panay electric coops ink pact with coal plant

SIX electric cooperatives in Panay Island inked Friday electric power purchase agreements at Iloilo Business Hotel with Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC).

PEDC is a subsidiary of Global Business Power Corp. (GBPC), owner of the first coal-fired power plant in Western Visayas.

Jesus Alcordo, president of both PEDC and GBPC, said the cooperatives are the first batch of power users and distributors to sign purchase agreements to source power from the soon-to-be-completed 164 megawatts (MW) base load coal-fired power plant in Barangay Ingore, La Paz district in Iloilo City.

The initial power buyers are the Iloilo I Electric Cooperative (Ileco I) with four MW, Ileco II, 10 MW; Ileco III, seven MW; Aklan Electric Cooperative (Akelco), 12 MW; Antique Electric Cooperative (Anteco), seven MW; and Capiz Electric Cooperative (Capelco), eight MW, on top of their existing supply sourced from other independent power producers.

Other electric buyers to sign purchase agreement with PEDC by next month are Panay Electric Company (Peco), the sole power distributor in Iloilo City; Guimaras Electric Cooperative (Guimelco), and electric cooperatives in Negros Occidental.

Signatories include board presidents of Iloilo electric cooperatives, PEDC Director Felipe A. Uygongco, SVP Jaime Azurin and Alcordo.

Construction is ongoing for the 164-megawatt clean coal power plant that utilizes the latest circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler technology, which ensures negligible level of emission and higher efficiency in removing sulfur dioxide and practically zero nitrogen oxide.

The first plant of 82 megawatts expected to be completed by end of September this year and be given another two months of testing will be commissioned by December to give power supply to the electric cooperatives.

The other 82-megawatt plant will be commissioned by February 2011 to start a new era of sustainable power generation in Panay and put an end to the rotating daily brownouts, Alcordo said.

The project is estimated to cost over US$405 million, with a P14 billion denominated loan for the project to ensure that electricity prices will have more stability reducing the exposure to foreign exchange volatility.

Alcordo said their purchase price is expected to lower the current generation price rate by P2 per kilowatt-hour. However, electric coops will have the option to have their price rate subject to approval of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).

The PEDC top official said power supply agreement is a long-term agreement between cooperatives and power generators PEDC and GBPC for about 15 to 25 years. This will also signal the positive entry of more industries and business and add livelihood to Panay and the rest of Western Visayas.

A TOP official of Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC), a unit of the Global Business Power Corp., is not threatened by the entry of various biomass power plants in different areas of Panay Island.

"In fact, I welcome these biomass power projects as it will add to the power supply in the area and trigger socio-economic development. But in the end, it simply cannot compete against a base-load power plant in producing sustainable and steady power supply," PEDC President Jesus Alcordo said.

Soon-to-be-completed and commissioned before the end of this year, PEDC is now constructing a 164-megawatt first coal fired power plant in the region to answer the needs for enough power supply.

"Big business and industries are soon coming to Iloilo City and province (Panay) because of the assurance of sustainable power supply, notably from the coal fired power plant," Alcordo said.

Iloilo City on Friday witnessed the signing of purchase power supply agreements between Panay Island electric cooperatives and PEDC.

Alcordo said the biomass power plant will need a tremendous supply of biomass consisting of agricultural wastes, such as rice husks and rice straws. This fuel demand for the biomass plant is expected to create a strain with the farmers and the environment.

The British Embassy in Manila has announced recently the construction of a 17.5 megawatt biomass power plant project in Mina, Iloilo, some 40 kilometers east of Iloilo City.

A British-subsidized company, the Green Power Panay Philippines, will build the biomass power plant to help address the power shortage in the province of Iloilo. (Lydia C. Pendon)

Johnson, ideal for their expansion plans, reason why they made the purchase.

...

Of course they would feel not threatened, its the energy sector for crying out loud! Competition means business. And the baseload for the biomass is smaller than that of GPBC. Its a welcome move since the more competition, the better--given the entry of WESM in the near future. Daw growing child kita, we need more and more energy sources since the demand is also growing. However, PEDC shouldn't have the monopoly of the power in PECO or any Panay electric coops. Madula ang sirbi sang competitive pricing if madula sang kompetitsyon--magmahal ang panukot kang kuryente--especially nga fossil fuel sila nga daan. Better have alternatives and competition than waiting for another energy crisis hitting us hard.

I hope those new power projects would ultimately lower the high prices of power that the city residents and businesses had suffered for years.

And with it, comes the advent of new investments that will trigger the boom that our city deserves for so long. We'll expect that by next year, a swarm of megabuck projects and companies that bypassed the city because of high power rates will come in droves. Padayon Iloilo! The best is yet to come!

Medical City buys 2 more hospitals

ILOILO CITY—HEALTHCARE organization The Medical City (TMC) has acquired Great Saviour International Hospital (GSIH) and Global Medical Network (GMN) as part of a P700-million investment in healthcare institutions nationwide.

In a briefing here Friday, TMC president and chief executive officer Dr. Alfredo Bengzon said the TMC had assumed management and operations of the GSIH and GMN in preparation for the purchase of the facilities within the year.

The TMC had also acquired health facilities in Luzon, including the Mercedes Medical Center in Pampanga and a network of outpatient clinics, including the Evacare Medical Clinic in Dagupan, Far East Health Service Olongapo and Fleet Health Medical Clinic in Cavite.

The GSIH is a 100-bed tertiary hospital along the Iloilo River while the MMC is a two-story facility in Angeles City with a 50-bed capacity.

Bengzon, who served as Health Secretary from 1986 to 1992, said the acquisition of the facilities was part of the TMC’s plan to provide state-of-the-art facilities and services nationwide.

“These acquisitions concretize our firm commitment in providing Filipinos greater accessibility to world-class health care services,” Bengzon said.

The rest of the group’s P700-million investment would be used to expand and upgrade medical facilities, mostly in Iloilo.

Margaret Bengzon, TMC vice president for strategic services, said the nearly 400 employees of GSIH had been given retirement options with many of them being rehired under the new management, which would hire a total of 700 employees.

From the application of Panay Electric Company to the Energy Regulatory Commission :

IN THE MATTER OF THE APPLICATION FOR
APPROVAL OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF 50 / 62.5
MVA SUB-STATION AND 2.5 KM 69 KV SUBTRANSMISSION
LINE WITH PRAYER FOR PROVISIONAL AUTHORITY

.....

The total project cost is ONE HUNDRED THIRTY SIX MILLION NINE HUNDRED THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED FOUR PESOS and 78/100 (PhP136,900,804.78), Philippine currency, broken down for each project, as follows:

A. For the 50 / 62.5 MVA sub-station, ONE HUNDRED SEVEN MILLION NINE HUNDRED THOUSAND ONE PESOS and 10/100 (PhP107,900,001.10), Philippine currency;

B. For the 2.5 KM 69 KV Sub-transmission line, TWENTY NINE MILLION EIGHT HUNDRED THREE PESOS and 68/100 (PhP29,000,803.68), Philippine currency

.......

B. Justification of the Project

A distribution utility’s reliability is largely dependent on its ability to bring in power from various generation sources to its franchise area. The major factor that defines this capability of a utility is its total substation capacity.
a. Current available substation capacity of PECO
Substation capacity – Location Available Capacity
10 MVA Substation – Jaro 10 MVA
25/30 MVA Substation - Mandurriao 30 MVA
25/30 MVA Substation – Molo 30 MVA
20 MVA Substation – City Proper 20 MVA
TOTAL RATED CAPACITY 90 MVA
TOTAL USABLE CAPACITY (at 90% PF) 81 MW

b. PECO’s current demand is 76MW. At an average growth rate of 3% per year, it will go beyond its available substation capacity in 2 years (2011). If this is the case and considering the gestation period for a substation, it needs to start building one within the year .It also has to be noted that in the event of trouble in any of the substations, PECO will have to resort to load shedding.

D. Five Year Historical and Forecast Planning Data

PECO projected demand for the next five years:
Req MVA + (Reserve)
2009 - 76.0 MW 112.6MVA
2010 3% growth rate - 78.3 MW 115.1 MVA
2011 5% growth rate - 82.2 MW 119.3 MVA
2012 7% growth rate - 88.0 MW 125.6 MVA
2013 5% growth rate - 92.3 MW 130.4 MVA
2014 5% growth rate - 97.0 MW 135.4 MVA

With these demand projections, an additional 40 MVA will answer PECO’s growth and reserve equipments for the next five years (assuming that Megaworld Corporation’ development projects will not come into the picture). However, considering the difference in pricing for a 40 MVA and a 50 / 62.5 MVA, we would be better off going for a 50 / 62.5 MVA. Also, the 50 / 62.5 MVA rating maximizes and matches the capacity of the NGCP 138/69 kV 50 MVA substation in the coal plant compound.

Of course they will prioritise Iloilo City since this is their main base. And of course, they have an agreement with PECO-PEDC, so I don't see any shift of priority outside Iloilo City onto other islands. Remember that PEDC plants were made for Iloilo's lack of energy needs. I don't think they'll just leave Panay in the dark! That's plain bulls*** and stupidity if ever they do not supply the needs of Iloilo City, IMHO.

The business of energy does not concentrate on one place alone. Given the impending implementation of WESM, energy sources are coming from different sources--not just one.

If PECO or Iloilo City's demand is lower, the IPP may go as well sell their extra power to other cooperatives. IPPs don't live in single client alone--maputo sila na kag its already a monopoly. IPPs would try to optimise their output capacity to cover the investment and operations--and to make profit as soon as possible. They don't leave Iloilo City or PECO consumers suffer because of the needs of the others. PEDC knows what Iloilo City demands are.

Try ask, was Leyte Geothermal, Palinpinon or even Cebu coal plants were solely made for Cebu, Leyte and Negros? I don't think so. The energy source is being shared all throughout the region for added capacity and baseload. Its better if PECO doesn't source out its energy from one source to have a more competitive price for its consumers.

And besides, demand changes. I guess the law of supply and demand follows.

Also, try to read and analyse first on why they have planned such. Common sense lang na pards, PEDC couldn't make Iloilo City a less priority, given that BULK of their energy sources would be distributed to PECO. Before even making a conclusion nga less priority ang Iloilo City, please try to do some research, kay basi ma-backfire sa aton ang imo nga statement. Halong kag madamu guid nga salamat! :)

(PIA)

Thanks sir. Maybe its just because Im so p**sed off of the rotating brownouts and outstanding electric bills. :ohno:

You're not alone.

Nagarason naman kuno ang mga power producers nga the plants are under maintenance for April instead of May due to elections--para kuno wala brownout sa eleksyon kay tungod automated na...or is it?

The El Nino phenomenon came at a very wrong time. Especially that the Magat dam is one of the biggest suppliers of electricity in the metro and the water in the dam is slowly evaporizing due to the phenomenon. Kag lapit nalang ang elections. To SSC Iloilo forumers that are currently based in Iloilo.

May I have your attention please.

Are there anyone interested in mapping of election precincts in Iloilo City and probably MIGEDC towns? Google may sponsor a mapping party that would be doing such, probably by next week. We, as SSC forumers could organise such mapping party to help locate the election precints for voters in the upcoming May 10 polls. This way, we can help our fellow citizens and Iloilo in this civic activity.

For more information, please PM me or contact Junelle of Iloilo Bloggers.

Thanks! :)

From a national daily...

Big City retains Palarong Pambansa crown
Sunday, 18 April 2010 00:00

BY FRANK CALAPRE CORRESPONDENT

SAN Jose, Tarlac: The National Capital Region (ncr), through its victory in volleyball, baseball and softball accumulated a total of 640 points to retain the overall crown for the fifth straight year in the 53rd Palarong Pambansa here at the Tarlac Recreational Park. After retaining the swimming crown Friday, the Big City bets swept the two baseball events and ended the 22-year supremacy of Western Visayas in the secondary softball, 4-3, to wrap both the elementary and secondary divisions trophy.

“As what we have seen today, other regions are improving in some other events so next year we will also do something in these events, where we are not that good. We will do better each year. So expect a much better NCR next year. This is our challenge to other regions,” said Dr. Jose Rizalino Rosales, assistant regional director of NCR.

Archrival Western Visayas finished consistently at second in both divisions to remain a distant runner-up in the weeklong multi-event meet with an aggregate 430 points followed by Calabarzon with 402, while Central Visayas kept the fourth spot with 213.17 and Northern Mindanao at fifth with 192. Host Central Luzon, which finished eighth last year in Tacloban City, now improved to sixth with 170 and Socsargen at
seventh with 148.5.

Completing the top 10 casts were Davao Region at eighth with 99.84, Mimaropa occupied the ninth spot with 84.5 and Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association with 63 points for the 10th spot.

Aside from swimming, baseball and softball, other domains for the NCR athletes were gymnastics, chess and volleyball girls, when they dethroned Western Visayas for the title.

The Department of Education used its own matrix point system to determine the overall champion with seven points given to individual gold, five for silver and four for bronze, while the champion in medal-rich athletics and swimming gets 30 points each but 25 points each is also provided to the winner in baseball, basketball, football, volleyball and softball.

At the end of the fierce competition, a total of 22 new records, 13 in athletics and nine in swimming have been posted in the book, which was better than the only 12 in Tacloban City last year.

Among the records being reset in athletics were three from Unso and two from Ayssa Mae Andrade. The others were Maika de Oro of Region VI (secondary girls’ discus throw), Felyn Deluso of Region VI (secondary triple jump), Mark Heey Diones of Region VI (secondary triple jump), Gia Bucag of Region VI (elementary girls’ javelin), Jesusa Ampunan of Bicol (elementary 100-meter hurdles), Joneza Mei Sustitudo of Region VI (elementary girls’ 1,500-m run) and Lovilyn Pamatian also of Region VI (elementary 800-m run) and Francisco Valderamas in the secondary pole vault (4.05-m).

In swimming, two from Ca-therine Bondad of Calabarzon in the elementary girls 200-m freestyle and 400-m freestyle, while one from the NCR team of Antoinette Aquino, Arianne Canaya, Alyssa Pogiongko and Shaya Uy in the 4x50-m freestyle relay.

Also setting new records in the secondary level were Gabriel Castelo of NCR in the 100-m butterfly, Loren Dal Echavez of Region VII in the 100-m freestyle, Fahad Alkhalde of Calabarzon in the 800-m freestyle and Erika King Lukang also of Calabarzon in the 800-m freestyle and the NCR team in the secondary boys 400-m freestyle relay.

Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Harry Angping, the main guest in the closing ceremonies, handed a sum of P5,000 each to all record-breakers in athletics and swimming.

“I challenge all of you to continue doing better in your respective disciplines so that your chances of making it to the South East Asian Games, Asian Games and the 2012 Olympics will be also higher,” said Angping to the winners.

Medical City buys Iloilo-based chain of hospitals and clinics

Posted on 08:41 PM, April 18, 2010

ILOILO CITY -- A Metro Manila-based hospital will invest more than P700 million and the latest technology in health care as it embarks on an expansion to Iloilo City.

In a statement, Alfredo R.A. Bengzon, The Medical City president and chief executive officer, said the expansion to Iloilo City and other parts of the country would bring “world-class” medical services to the rest of the country.

The Medical City has assumed management and operations of the Great Saviour International Hospital in Molo, Iloilo City and the Global Medical Network in anticipation of a full purchase before the year ends.

It has also acquired sister sites of Great Saviour and Global Medical Network in Luzon which includes the Mercedes Medical Center in Pampanga and a network of outpatient clinics in Dagupan, Olongapo and Cavite. These clinics are accredited by Tricare, the worldwide health care program that services retired US military servicemen and their dependents.

The acquisition brings the number of Medical City locations to 18. Its main complex is located on a 1.5-hectare property on Ortigas Avenue in Pasig City.

The Medical City has 40 years of experience in hospital operation and administration, serving some 40,000 inpatients and 380,000 outpatients a year.

Mr. Bengzon said they found the Great Saviour network, headed by Evangeline C. Johnson, was ideal for Medical City’s expansion plans.

Initially, the Medical City has allocated P150 million for the upgrade of the Iloilo hospital building.

Some P600 million will be spent for the acquisition of equipment such as a 4D CAT scan and construction of additional wards. “Some P400 million will be set aside for the Iloilo hospital while the rest will be spent on sister facilities in Luzon,” Mr. Bengzon said.

Great Saviour is a tertiary hospital with a 100-bed capacity. Its sister hospital in Angeles City is a level-two facility with a capacity of 50 beds. Mr. Bengzon said the capacity would be expanded to 200 beds with the construction of another building.

Mr. Bengzon also said the acquisition of Great Saviour’s five clinics in Iloilo City and Luzon would allow the Medical City to serve retired US military servicemen under the Tricare system.

The Medical City will bring to Iloilo a regenerative medicine program which uses stem cell technology in curing cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

Meanwhile, Ms. Johnson denied reports she had sold Great Savious because it is bleeding financially. She said it was the Medical City that approached her.

“No, we’re not losing. Just like any entity, we also experienced birth pains but we hurdled past them. Would a top corporation like the Medical City buy a bankrupt hospital?” Ms. Johnson said.

Mr. Bengzon said the Medical City also looked into controversies such as the alleged Tricare and Philhealth claims scams involving Ms. Johnson and her medical network but said his group was convinced the hospital and its management had nothing to do with them.

Mr. Bengzon said Ms. Johnson would remain as consultant. -- Francis Allan

Metrobank unit secures power contracts

ILOILO CITY -- Metrobank’s power generation unit Global Business Power Corp. has signed electric power purchase agreements with six cooperatives belonging to the Panay-Guimaras Power Supply Consortium.

Global Business Power President Jesus N. Alcordo said the new 164-megawatt (MW) coal-fired plant being built by subsidiary Panay Energy Development Corp. will supply to the cooperatives.

Panay Energy is also wrapping up negotiations with Panay Electric Co. or PECO, the sole power distributor in Iloilo City. Mr. Alcordo said a power purchase agreement with Panay Electric will be signed next month.

“We expect to sign an [agrement] with PECO early May when we have concluded our negotiations with them. PECO’s baseload demand is more than 60 megawatts,” Mr. Alcordo said.

Panay Energy signed the agreements with the Iloilo Electric Cooperative (Ileco) 1, which will buy 4 MW; Ileco 2, 10 MW; Ileco 3, 7 MW; Antique Electric Cooperative (Anteco), 7 MW; Aklan Electric Cooperative (Akelco), 12 MW; and Capiz Electric Cooperative (Capelco), 8 MW.

Aside from Mr. Alcordo, other signatories were Global Business Power Senior Vice-President and Chief Finance Officer Jaime T. Azurin and Panay Energy Director Felipe A. Uygongco.

Mr. Alcordo said the firm expects demand for power in Panay, particularly Iloilo City, to surge when the coal-fired power plant operates.

“There is a lot of suppressed demand in Iloilo City and Panay because of high prices of power. But when the coal plant operates, which will bring down electricity rates, we expect more call centers and investments to enter the island which will cause a spike in demand for power,” he added.

Mr. Alcordo said the generation charge or cost of producing electricity will go down by at least P2 per kilowatt-hour once the coal-fired power plant goes on line later this year.

“Our generation rate in the coal-fired power plant in Cebu is even lower than the rates of the newest entrant,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Aklan Electric Cooperative or AKELCO said it expects the coal-fired power plant to bring down electricity rates and provide stable power to Aklan and its prized Boracay Island.

Chito R. Peralta, Aklan cooperative general manager, said the utility has been dependent on diesel-fired plants in Aklan which supply expensive power. The utility had contracted the biggest volume of electricity from Panay Energy, amounting to 12 MW.

“AKELCO’s peak demand is more than 33-34 MW with Boracay Island accounting for 40% of that demand,” Mr. Peralta said.

Panay Energy expects to commission the first 82-MW unit of its coal plant in Brgy. Ingore, La Paz, Iloilo City in October this year. The second unit will be “on line” three months later. -- Francis Allan L. Angelo

basically why hunt down the whole lakbayaw festival, when in fact, its only the modelian tribe who has done something against dinagyang. (or paghidaet, to be specific).

and surprise of all surprises the person who's been leaking all these details about costumes, choreography, and concept to modelian is also from Iloilo...

so instead of hunting the people of tondo, why not hunt first this guy who's been a dinagyang insider and spill all details to a tribe in tondo.

San Joaquin church, Philippines

In a province crammed with Spanish colonial monuments, you’d hardly think that a little church tucked away in a sleepy town would cause a stir.

Wrong. The little-known San Joaquin Church in the Filipino province of Iloilo is a shocker. Instead of limestone bricks and Virgin Marys, its bass relief disquietingly depicts a bloody battle scene, complete with rifle action and men jostled off horses.

The only church in the Philippines with a “military theme,” the San Joaquin Church was erected in 1869 to commemorate how the Spanish thrashed the Moors in the Battle of Tetuan.

The church stands in the seaside town of Iloilo, which has one of the most gorgeous sea coasts in the Visayas. A flight from Manila to Iloilo takes an hour and most of the city’s destinations are accessible with a Jeepney.

^^ And then, Iloilo doesn't have a tourism potential as some say? Hehehehe!!! :bash: I hope our next three years would have a supportive local government for tourism as an alternative to agriculture.

There is a story behind it, one theory would be the experience of the Ilonggos in almost constant threat of the Moro invasions coming from the sea. San Joaquin was one of those who were ransacked by the raids.

Iloilo soon to export ‘carabao’ mangoes

ILOILO – This province may yet give Guimaras, known for its sweet mangoes, a run for its money.

Iloilo, thru the municipality of Leganes, will soon be exporting “carabao” mangoes, now that an Extended Hot Water Treatment (EHWT) System for Quarantine and Dis-infestation and Disease Control of ‘Carabao’ Mango Fruits will be made available.

The facility will be operational by June, said the Department of Agriculture (DA).

The hot water treatment facility will enable mango growers in Region 6 to export their products. It is noted that only mangoes that have undergone the EHWT process are allowed to enter the US market.

Non-EHWT processed mangoes could only managed to penetrate the Japanese and Asian mango trade.

The entire process includes putting the mango fruits in crates and dipped in the Hot Water Tank at 48 degrees centigrade for 15 minutes. It will then undergo air cooling for 10 minutes and dipped in the hydro-cooling tank for 30 minutes and left to dry before packing.

The EHWT can treat two tons of mangoes for eight hours.

Likewise, the facility will also have a packing house, so that the mangoes will be given proper packaging that will conform to accreditation requirements for export.

The equipment was fixed and test-run by Dr. Kevin F. Yaptenco and Engineer Emmanuel Amatorio of the University of the Philippines Foundation (UPLBF).

UPLBF is currently working with the IMGC and the DA representative to make sure the hot water treatment facility will be able to meet the mango processing demands.

DA Regional Executive Director Larry Nacionales said mangoes in Panay Island, particularly in areas around Leganes, can easily become export quality once it undergoes EHWT.

The EHWT is funded by the Department of Agriculture High Value Commercial Crops (DA-HVCC) in Western Visayas.

The EHWT belongs to the Iloilo Mango Growers Cooperative (IMGC) at Cagamutan Sur, Leganes, Iloilo and being managed by Edwin Brasileño. (PNA)

Regulate night sidewalk
vendors – city treasurer

ILOILO City – The City Treasurer’s Office is urging the Sangguniang Panlungsod to revive the Night Market Ordinance regulating sidewalk vending at night.
Street vendors comprise a huge bulk of the city’s underground market, said City Treasurer Katherine Tingson.
Many are active until the wee hours of the morning along the main thoroughfares, she observed.

The City Council should find a solution to this burgeoning underground market, said Tingson, even though they do not pay any business tax to the city government.
Sidewalk vending is hard to eradicate, she admitted, and so she said the best thing the city government can do is to regulate them.
Tingson said the city has a vast night market potential; all it needs is a proper strategy and support from the business sector, including the small and medium enterprises.
Food vendors and small-time restaurateurs should also be tap to join the night market initiative, she added.
The city government experimented with the idea of a night market on March 2006, lumping together all sidewalk vendors in just one area – Muelle Loney Street starting from Quirino Bridge to the corner of Yulo Street.
Mayor Jerry Treñas had supported the endeavor. He said it would provide a safe place for all residents to buy what the vendors were selling at night.
The city government provided the kiosks and set up live shows or concerts to attract and entertain the public.
But the night market lasted for only a few weeks. Many sidewalk vendors were uncomfortable with their new location on Muelle Loney St. They claimed to have lost many of their customers who used to patronize them in their previous nightly locations.
The night market initiative had hoped to provide economic opportunities to the sidewalk vendors as well as promote tourism. It ran from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. (With a report from the Philippine News Agency/PN)

^^^^Action speaks louder than words. Hope they will assist these vendors.
