NASA science caravan to visit Bohol, Iloilo

Cebu Daily News First Posted 09:48:00 08/18/2010 Filed Under: Science & Technology

TWO engineers from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration are currently in the country as part of NASA’s Science Caravan “Reaching for Your Stars” program.

The Asia Society Philippines and the U.S. Embassy’s U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) mission and Public Affairs Section are co-sponsoring the program with support from the U.S. Peace Corps.

The Caravan provides learning opportunities for Filipino students to become more competitive in science.

Early this week, the caravan conducted interactive lectures and one-on-one dialogues with students from various schools in Metro Manila and General Santos City.

The two engineers will also visit schools in Bool, Iloilo City, Batangas and Legaspi City.

During the workshops, Engineers Adam Gilmore and Sabrina Singh will use astronaut food and space suits to show how people live in space. Using a shuttle model and a video, they will show how the Space Shuttle works. Arranging the students in the formation of the solar system, they will show them why the moon’s image changes shape according to the moon’s phases, why there are seasons, and why there is no snow in the Philippines.

The workshop in Bohol will be held today from 10 a.m. to noon at the Central Visayan Institute Foundation in Jagna. Dr. Christopher Bernido and his wife, Dr. Ma. Victoria Carpio-Bernido, both physicists who will receive the Ramon Magsaysay Award will add their expertise to the workshop.

In Iloilo, the workshops will be held on Aug. 19 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Raul O. V. Tausing Memorial School in Barotac Viejo and on Aug. 20 at 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Jaro National High School, and at 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Iloilo National High School.

Dr. Josette Talamera Biyo, a high school teacher who won the Intel Excellence in Teaching Award, will participate in the Aug. 20 workshops.

Ayala Land’s diverse growth centers in the Vis-Min region

Growth centers are vital components to cultivating progressive and productive communities while spurring economic activity for nation-building. Ayala Land, Inc. (ALI)—the most trusted property developer in the country—incorporates their competencies and expertise in masterplanning and developing fully-integrated and sustainable mixed-use communities to build the ideal platform for long-term value creation.

To date, ALI has 3,930 hectares of land allotted for growth center developments all over the country and 19% of this or 747 hectares is dedicated in the Visayas and Mindanao (Vis-Min) regions, attracting big businesses and customers.

Significant ramp-up in 5 key areas in the South
The Vis-Min growth centers are strategically distributed in five major areas, Cebu, Davao, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro, and Iloilo, following the geographic and demographic expansion plans of ALI. Mr. Emilio Tumbocon, Head of the Vis-Min Group and Superblock projects of Ayala Land enumerates the developments in each area:

Cebu
Development by Ayala Land in Cebu started in the early 90’s with the establishment of the Cebu Business Park and followed by Asiatown IT Park. “Cebu is the biggest trading center within the Vis-Min area. It’s the second largest center for commerce and also second in terms of population after Mega Manila. Further expansion of ALI in Cebu is inevitable,” he said. Today, Cebu has lived up to its potentials and transformed itself into the business district of choice for companies in the region.

“Due to the lack of business and BPO facilities in Cebu, we have focused on developing office spaces in the last three to four years to make it more attractive for locators. And now that we have achieved this goal, we are now expanding by catering to the increasing residential and commercial needs of our customers.”

“Creating integrated mixed-use communities is essential to our expansion plans. We bring together various components of our business--residential, commercial/business, hotel and retail-- because put together these make up a robust business district & growth center. That way, each project complements the other and the community is able to thrive making it more beneficial for the various stakeholders of the community,” explains Tumbocon.

An example is the Asiatown IT Park in Cebu City which is a business district spanning 24 hectares. As a special economic zone and modern business center, Asiatown houses different BPO companies such as NCR, Convergys, People Support, Microsoft, IBM, JP Morgan and Epson to name a few. Asiatown has also integrated commercial and retail establishments for dining, recreation, and leisure purposes. Now it is primed to expand to add more projects, such as Avida Towers Cebu and additional e-offices, as the demand for more residential units & office spaces are growing. We are also planning for the expansion & redevelopment of the Ayala Center Cebu in Cebu Business Park as demand for retail, office & residential products are growing.

Davao
Positioned as the growth center of Southern Mindanao, Ayala Land has announced early this year the opening of Abreeza Mall in Davao City by 2011. This 2.9-hectare mall is part of a 10-hectare multi-development that will feature a hotel, residential buildings, and office facilities. Mall construction is in full swing and is projected to be completed by second quarter of next year.

Bacolod
Ayala Land Premier’s Ayala North Point has long offered an upscale residential community at the heart of Bacolod City. Soon, ALI plans to include upper-middle and lower-middle income residences, along with retail and business districts, for more client options.

Cagayan De Oro
In 2006, ALI offered its first housing development in Cagayan de Oro, the high-end subdivision Alegria Hills. Now, the city in blossom will also witness the conception of a big lifestyle mall in CDO, covering about 3.2 hectares.

Iloilo
The latest of the Vis-Min group projects is the Iloilo TechnoHub. The 2-hectare property along the Diversion Road, Mandurriao, Iloilo City envisions a business hub composed of three buildings and support facilities that can serve different BPO locators. It will be fully functional by end of 2011. Likewise, we are also developing a residential community in Pavia and in other areas.

Robust growth forecast for Vis-Min
“This has been a good year for Vis-Min. The transfer of best practices in world class developments from Manila to the Vis-Min area is crucial in the success of the growth centers in the Southern part of the Philippines. But more importantly, we stay close to our target market by understanding the characteristics of every locality in order to provide appropriate solutions. Preferences definitely differ given the provincial setting which is a little bit laid back compared to Manila which is highly urbanized and fast-paced.”

Southern Philippines is robust not only in natural wonders, but also in financial activities. Dispelling misconception about the current security and economy of Visayas and Mindanao, ALI taps into the strengths of each region to help harness them through its growth centers.

“We are confident that the peace and order situation will improve that’s why we are positioning ourselves aggressively even in Mindanao,” says Tumbocon. “We develop integrated communities that are safe, reliable, and good environment for business. We have realized the importance of building world-class business districts and growth centers in other areas even outside Luzon, to attract investors and generate employment for the people and promote tourism.”

ALI continues to find better ways to reach out to more people and is now looking into other areas in Vismin for more growth center sites.

Tumbocon explains Vis-Min group’s aggressive campaign: “ The economy of the Philippines is not only generated in the highly urban areas of Mega Manila but in the provinces as well . We should bring world-class products to the VisMin region in order to stimulate economic progress in the countryside. Improving the economic well-being of the countryside is one of ALI’s development objectives and I think that is a sound development principle for the Philippines as well.”

The Visayas and Mindanao growth centers are only a fraction of Ayala Land’s nation-building mission via nurturing sustainable communities and boosting their financial viability. The Vismin team mostly hailing from the region including Mr. Tumbocon himself, who is from the Visayas, hold the projects close to their hearts and work with entrepreneurial passion in delivering the best of what ALI can offer. “Bringing growth centers outside Mega Manila is truly an exciting initiative of Ayala Land and the market seems to be responding positively to these new projects. From Luzon to Visayas, and Mindanao, Ayala Land is truly enhancing land, enriching lives for more people.”

that's the way forward, Metro. Jed in Iloilo City just to solve dengue is no use at all. He needs to exercise his executive powers to help improve and get investments for our city and improve our international relations. There's a department who overlooks at the health, sanitation, etc of the city and does not need for Jed to dwell around and solve the issue himself. He's not paid to sit down and focus on certain issue which can be dealth with by a certain department tasked to oversee it. He needs to make the city more competitive, both in local, national and international arena in order to gravitise investments and provide more jobs for all Iloilo City residents and more. I'm glad to hear that he's as progressive in thought when it comes to this matter. Good job for him!

News like this coming from a radio station is a big nuissance to help us move forward. And whoever the anchor is, does not take a look at things in a wider perspective.

Wow...so what's the use of having a city council and city departments if we all rely to the "almighty executive?"

Leadership is needed, but each has its own function. The whole city cannot be ruled alone by one person, although he is responsible for the actions of his team. I think all organisations have this kind of setup.

Who is he, Jed Almighty?

Amu na guid ya pirmi rason sa aton, we couldn't blame anyone BUT the government OR the executive.

^^
This NEWS is bullcrap IMAO! As in total bullcrap! Bombo is so irresponsible!
Basta radyo --- BomBOTIGON!:bash:

WTF! Mayor Mabilog thrust is INVESTMENT hence the travel abroad and international partnerships!

About Dengue, the city has a way to handle that like the DOH, Public Health and Safety, the City Office has also concerned departments to look into that (in the case of indigents). We also have other government programs like defogging, 4 o'clock habit etc ad nauseam.

Ngaa ano gusto sang bombo, kadtuan ni Mayor Jed kada isa ka mga dengue victim kag tapik-tapikon sa likod para mag-ayo? Ginago!
Or pamatyon ya tanan na lamok? Yuck Fou!

This kind of BALITA is so rehash, mediocre at BEST!

Other Iloilo City PROBLEMS can be addressed EVEN without the CITY MAYOR around, for one the Vice Mayor can manage in his lieu. And two, the Mayor can remotely monitor whats happening in Iloilo thru his officers and internet and at the same time give directives.

And mind you it is being addressed! We have a hard working City Mayor right now.... open to changes as well and has a vision!

Palyado nga balita or opinion! Wala pulos! Sagi wakak sa mikropono nga ma reporter! I am sorry to say this but as always public opinion sucks most of the time! As it is being shown right now by BomboTIGON Radyo's sorry little ass.

Just my 0.02

‘All ro-ro vessels in Region 6 seaworthy’

ILOILO City -- As part of the nationwide inspection of roll-on-roll-off (ro-ro) vessels, the Maritime Regional Office 6 (Marina-6) checked 15 ro-ro vessels that dock in the ports of Western Visayas.

The 15 ro-ro vessels are docking in the ports of Caticlan in Aklan, Guimaras province, Dumangas in Iloilo province and Bacolod city in Negros Occidental.

Marina Regional Director Mary Armi Arcilla said the ro-ro vessels were all found to be seaworthy.

“They have no violations against maritime laws,” she added.

Arcilla said she is constantly encouraging the management of ro-ro vessels to make sure that their ships always comply with maritime safety standards. (PNA)

P600-M infra rehab projects
for Panay in full swing

ILOILO City – The rehabilitation of various typhoon-damaged infrastructures in Panay Island is going smoothly as planned, said Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Regional Director Rolando Asis.

The government allocated a P600-million calamity fund for the rehabilitation.

Asis enumerated some of these rehabilitation projects:

* replacement of E. Marcos Bridge in Maasin, Iloilo -- P180 million
* completion of the Baltazar Aquino Bridge in Poblacion, Leon, Iloilo – P110 million
* completion of Camanggahan Bridge in Brgy. Camanggahan, Guimbal, Iloilo -- P90 million
* repair of Balabag-Sulangan road in Balabag-Pulaw-Sulangan, Dumangas, Iloilo -- P50 million
* repair of Dumangas coastal road -- P65 million
* repair of the river control in Libacao, Aklan -- P55 million; and
* repair of Patnongon-Valderama road in Valderama, Antique -- P50 million.

Meanwhile, Asis recently ordered all district engineers to remove all names and pictures of personages in project billboards, in response to Department Order 37 issued by Secretary Rogelio L. Singson.

“Project billboards shall be installed in all project sites by the concerned implementing offices of the department using the revised DPWH standard project billboard format,” said Singson.

Names and/or pictures of any personages should not appear in the billboard, he stressed.

President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III has ordered the removal of billboards that banner the names of politicians as having initiated the completion of infrastructure projects either through their pork barrel allocation in Congress or their regular budgets in local governments.

Secretary Ricky Carandang of the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office said President’s point is that funds used for government projects belong to the public coffers.

Publicly-funded projects should therefore be credited to the taxpayers and not to politicians, he stressed.

Under the DPWH modified format, project billboards should only contain the name and location of project, name of contractor, the date the project started, contract completion date, contract cost, construction consultant, implementing office of the DPWH, and source of fund./PN

Iloilo City hosts transport summit

ILOILO City -- The Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Development Council-Japan International Cooperation Agency (MIGEDC-JICA) is holding a transportation summit here today.

The one-day event brings together officials from Cebu City, Cagayan de Oro and the Davao Cluster (represented by the Davao Integrated Development Program) who are involved in transportation planning and traffic management and regulation.

They will share their best practices and experiences on this subject of utmost concern for Metro Iloilo and suburbs, according to JICA expert on public involvement and training Prof. Lorenza Padojinog.

Padojinog said the rate of spatial developments around rural and urban (rural-urban) centers have started to encroach on people’s mobility and affect the way of life of communities, thus there is an urgent need to address these concerns.

The summit hopes to heighten the awareness of motorists, pedestrians, commuters and the entire community of the exigency to establish a transport/traffic management system.

Padojinog said suburban areas forming the Metro-Iloilo hub, namely Pavia, Sta. Barbara, San Miguel, the province of Guimaras (Jordan) and Iloilo City are aptly represented by their officials whom the JICA grant trained for the transport planning and traffic management of their municipalities.

Other representatives from related agencies, such as the Land Transportation Office, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Tourism, Department of Interior and Local Government, National Economic Development Auhtority, the Sangguniang Bayans of the municipalities, Local Chief Executives, and heads of educational institutions have also been invited.

Cong. Jerry Treñas, Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and Guimaras Gov. Felipe Hilan Nava are expected to grace the opening.

Mabilog and Nava serve as MIGEDC chair and co-chair, respectively. (PNA)

I see. Salamat sa pagpa-athag Pre. :okay:

wow, nice place! sa diin ini located?

Just look at the other side of the coin pre, the other radio stations like aksyon and rmn are not attacking mayor jed. :)

^^
Ara na ko da Pre. BUT still, the kind of accusation being thrown is so 'juvenile' if not downright banal that its irritating to the utmost degree. Its basically 'sirang-plaka.' :bash:
Come on, Bombo can do better than that. Zona Libre before was way better.

My 0.02. :)

that's the way forward, Metro.

^^
Ditto!
Right on target! :)

^^
Exactly my point! :okay:

Ayala Land’s diverse growth centers in the Vis-Min region

Growth centers are vital components to cultivating progressive and productive communities while spurring economic activity for nation-building. Ayala Land, Inc. (ALI)—the most trusted property developer in the country—incorporates their competencies and expertise in masterplanning and developing fully-integrated and sustainable mixed-use communities to build the ideal platform for long-term value creation.

Likewise, we are also developing a residential community in Pavia and in other areas

13 Gastronomical pitstops in Iloilo City (http://flavoursofiloilo.blogspot.com/2010/08/13-gastronomical-pitstops-in-iloilo.html)

Ask Ilonggos (or just anybody who have been to), what to do in Iloilo City, the most likely answer would just be one word – punctuated with an exclamation point.

Eat!

http://i34.tinypic.com/ofo9eb.jpg

And it’s nonstop eating one will get with this list of 13 food places, which in my opinion, puts in a nutshell the gastronomic delights of Iloilo City. A useful guide for tourists who want to enjoy the heart of the Philippines through their stomach.

Yummy! It seems ILOILO CITY is fast BECOMING a Gourmet Burgers Haven.

Whyte, do you have the current number Burger Restos in Iloilo City (including # of branches?)
Crave, Perry Todds... what else did I miss?
Maybe you can do a BURGER FACE OFF someday? :)

daw amo man lang na sial nga 2 ang sikat as burger. ang iban nga restos may burger man pero daw on the side lang.
ang Crave daw 3 pa man lang branches nila - smallville/ casa plaza/jalandoni while ptodd's 1 man gyapon pero may catering service na sila - the banquet

Nota Bene:

(I am not attacking you personally demonoid, rather I am attacking the institution, in this case BomBOTIGON Radyo!)

Also I am NOT (in any way) Mayor Jed's PR Man, I just see to it that FAIR TREATMENT should be given to those who deserve it.

(My apologies If I came too harsh this morning, I just cannot stomach this 'rotten' news, recycled that even this kind of emotional blackmail tactic is used to every executive be it Mayor or President. You simply cannot fathom the fuck that I do not give.)

good morning

pre, i heard also at Aksyon Radyo with this comentator name SAPIO gna banatan ya mn si mayor.... kung ako si mayor nd ni salapakon implement ya lang ang dapat ya implemnt. ang lakat ya na hope there is positive for investment kag tourism advertisement.

there is a MIGEDC transport summit on one hotel here in city there is news over bomboo, i saw this on one of the partcipant, gn picturan ko.

http://a.imageshack.us/img20/5925/p8200047.jpgIloilo City hosts transport summit

(PNA)

excellent summit and very fruitful. i just hope the follow through would be as
productive. it would be a loss of the city if the advancement in understan-
ding and agreements on transport issues, present and future, could not be
translated to meaningful transport initiatives and more efficient use of funds
and resources. congratulations to the city (and the rest of MIGEDC) for
conducting such an honest-to-goodness forum.

Yup, pretty much it has found a loyal fanbase even to non-Ilonggos. Mang Inasal has captured a strong following. Bisan diin nga branch jampacked. Those Mang Inasal branches has upped the level of competition esp in U-BELT area, as in damo na restos BIG or SMALL ga-offer man unlimited RICE or DRINKS but wala gawa tao gasulod. Mang Inasal was able to position itself good... that way back in 2004, a Mang Inasal Franchise would costs 300K-500K now its around 3M-5M. So kung nabal-an ko lang basi nangita gid ko paagi thru partners or utang sa Bank (sayang kay hambal ko kung makaguwa na ako mafranchise)

Lately I was able to meet a new friend from Quezon Province ginahagad nya ako partner upod sa iya mga classmates sa pag-put up Mang Inasal sa ila lugar. 3 Sila plus ako 4 na... Jusmio wala ako kwarta ya pangpartner for a 5M Franchise of Mang Inasal. Te pass ko ya eh . ROI daw is expected within 2 years... the rest ah te ganansya na. But lately, I think its more than that... since damo naman ga-unli rice dri sa MM... but the people kept coming back so that means it could be the FF:

The Food (ang Chicken Inasal) or
The Service...

na ginabalik-balikan sang tao. Or a combination of these factors. Kay kadamo na di unlimited rice sa Manila nga kalan-an pero they are not as successful as Mang Inasal... so you can clearly see that its not just all ABOUT rice. There is something more. :D

Hello little boy.. seems like you're hurrying mom to go somewhere..:D I think I saw you struggling to climb over daddy's shoulder's while he was meeting with someone at Figaro the other day.. Peace mommy beth..I'm just amused with your energetic baby.:D

I heard the people in SM Dep't Store in Iloilo are struggling after getting the lowest customer service rating among 33 branches. Maybe the renovations have something to do with it. Glad it's almost done..

ubos mo guid kuhaan pics ang mga mang inasal braches pre ba... indi man guid ubos gle, just a small percentage. sa mga pics, ang nakadtuan ko na da, ay ang mang inasal branch quezon ave corner banawe streets. hehehe.

As promised here is the picture of Regatta Gateway Mall

^^
Di ba may ma open sa SM City Iloilo or was it Robinsons Place Iloilo?
Damo pa ako di pic sa baul. :D

nadumduman mo guid pre ba... thanks guid.:nuts:

^^

Mang Inasal is pretty much everywhere here in MM. I felt like daw sa Iloilo lang ako. :D

nugon pre no... di bale, makakuha ka guid na franchise sang mang inasal someday ah. ang waffle time, tag pila mag franchise man?

Another Homegrowns (Freska ugaling mas nauna sa Manila kaysa Iloilo)

CB Edsa Shang Extension (fave tambayan lately) + Waffle Time

http://i34.tinypic.com/263zpex.jpg

Freska soon too open in Araneta Center Cubao (a few meters away from Oyster Boy)

Kag syempre hindi gid madula si Mang Inasal.

ga waswas ka man pang kuha pics pre ah... thanks guid.

Another thing that I notice lately in MM. The growing popularity of Fried Molo.
Haven't tried one yet but I will for sure try one soon. :)

http://i35.tinypic.com/flajkh.jpg

^^
Just one of those growing numbers of restos serving Fried Molo Balls/Fried Molo.

Amo lang ni anay. Next time naman iban. :D
Over and out! Happy weekend sa tanan dri sa SSC Iloilo! :D

by the way, wala ga serve sang pancit molo ang marina?

Someone sent me a PM asking for assistance kung pano magkwa sang tenant application sa Plazuela. Its a company from Cebu.

Any help guys?

Astig pre! a fresh new perspective!

The only thing that is turning me off about this location is--the location itself. EDSA-Crossing is known for those bloody passenger-hungry bus drivers that toot all the way to the heavens! :bash:

What I love about this, friendly ang service, jejeje!!! :D
And they let you borrow the key for the comfort room that are supposed to be only for the tenants...Right, Kalt? :D

Ti, if you don't like the toot, you toot them too! dala ka sang imo na vuvuzela berns, hehe. They toot you, you toot them, you all toot each other. hehe

Hope the officials in Iloilo would look into this matter....

(PNA)

Hope the officials in Iloilo would look into this matter....

excellent summit and very fruitful. i just hope the follow through would be as
productive. it would be a loss of the city if the advancement in understan-
ding and agreements on transport issues, present and future, could not be
translated to meaningful transport initiatives and more efficient use of funds
and resources. congratulations to the city (and the rest of MIGEDC) for
conducting such an honest-to-goodness forum.

thanks for visiting our thread sir !and also in Iloilo city for the transport summit.

Jed assures no new taxes

By Lydia C. Pendon

GOOD news to taxpayers.

Iloilo City mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog assured taxpayers, especially the business sector, that no new taxes will be implemented this year.

Rather, Mabilog said he will pursue a comprehensive tax collection system to further increase revenues of the city government.

Mabilog said tax collection efficiency must be prioritized as the city is becoming one of the most populous areas in Western Visayas.
Mabilog said the city is enjoying the influx of investors including conglomerates based in Metro Manila and “this will result in more businesses and livelihood opportunities that will benefit the city.”

He said the city government has received several inquiries from national and foreign businesses as regards opportunities for business and investments. These inquiries were spurred by the soon to be completed 164-megawatt coal-fired power plant at Brgy. Ingore, La Paz district.

Other investment determinants include easy access to the new airport in Cabatuan, Iloilo, the roll on-roll off transportation, the presence of many universities and colleges and over-all investor-friendly climate of the city.

Mabilog also said that he is pushing for full computerization of all transactions in the city to lessen red tape especially in tax collection and tax appraisal systems.

“Also included is the computerization of employees’ office attendance that will include a biometrics system,” the city mayor said.

* repair of Balabag-Sulangan road in Balabag-Pulaw-Sulangan, Dumangas, Iloilo -- P50 million

Iloilo City steps up anti-smoking drive

Amendments will be made on the Iloilo City Regulation Ordinance 2006-150 to make it more comprehensive and active in its anti-smoking campaign.

Starting September 1, the campaign will be vigorous with deputized agents going around the city to issue citation tickets to violators, said Councilor Joshua Alim, chairman of the reactivated Anti-Smoking Task Force.

Alim said Executive Order 099-A recently issued by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog will resuscitate and strengthen the campaign on smoking as absolutely prohibited in schools, public buildings, public conveyances and government vehicles, fire hazard locations and within public and private hospitals, medical, dental and optical clinics.

He said that smoking maybe allowed in designated smoking areas but shall be prohibited in any enclosed public places such as accommodation and entertainment establishments.

In the case of hotels, lodges, inns and the like, the prohibition shall apply only to their respective common areas. Smoking is also prohibited in private workplace open to the general public.

On top of cash penalties against violators, Alim said the task force will strengthen its operation against violators and amendments to the existing ordinance will cover imprisonment or community work, announcement of their names in the media, police blotter report and or hauling them to court to prove their guilt.

The violators will also have a record at city hall that may deter them to get clearances for job opportunities, Alim said.

Individual violators will have to pay the fine at the city treasurer’s office cash amounting P500 for first offense, P1,000 for second offense and P5,000 for third offense and subsequent offenses.

Administrative penalties will also be imposed on business establishments at P500 for first offense, P1,000 and suspension of business permit and license to operate for one week for the second offense, and P5,000 cash penalty and cancellation and revocation of business permit and license on the third and subsequent offenses.*PNA

A century of transformative education

By Agnes Prieto
Philippine Daily Inquirer

Filed Under: Education, Schools, Government, Local authorities

HOMEWARD-BOUND is how more than a thousand alumnae of Assumption Iloilo found themselves, flying in mid August from all parts of the globe for the hundred years’ celebration of the school.

In our suitcases, we carried the beloved plaid uniform; in our minds, memories of the gentle Assumption upbringing.

Some say you can’t go home again. Things change, people pass on and what you left behind can never again be. This truism does not hold true for the Assumption that has always been home to men (we had Assumption boys, the present Iloilo City mayor is an old boy as was the previous one) and women who passed through its portals.

We transformed, going through life’s circuitous pathways, but our home—the familiar hallways, the cool and old trees in the gardens, and the beautiful school chapel remained as it always was.

The nuns shortened their habits though, doing away with the itchy woolen robes replacing them with light cotton blouses. The teachers are now friends who reveled in our achievements and successes. Spanking new buildings changed the landscape.

Home is more than physical space though. It is in the loving warmth, the unconditional acceptance by the sisters and teachers, and the deep commitment to values that prevailed over the hundred years since its inception in 1910.

The Assumption presence in the Philippines was royally requested by the Spanish Queen Regent herself, Maria Cristina, and Mother Marie Eugenie, our foundress, saw the opportunity to set up an educational and spiritual base in the far-off islands.

The first batch had gone in 1898. In November 1910, 11 Assumption sisters set sail from Barcelona, Spain, to Iloilo as pioneer teachers in the Visayas.

Within two years, the Assumption had moved to its present location by the river, from a rented house, offering complete elementary and secondary courses accredited by the Bureau of Private Schools. Professors and teachers came from Europe and locally.

The response was immediate, families from all over the Panay and Negros, as well as Mindanao, began to send their daughters—some as boarders, others as day students.

Classes and other school activities were in full swing. Enrollment grew, hindered only by World War II when the school temporarily closed. It would reopen in 1945.

By 1948, a college department was established, offering Liberal Arts, BS degrees in Commerce and Education. Alongside these academic courses, they were authorized to grant Catechist’s Diploma to religion teachers who served outlying communities.

In support of the community service, over the years, the Mother Marie Eugenie Society was established. Soon, the Barrio Obrero school was instituted for poor students.

Many agree that Assumption education is more than an academic degree—the focus is on “transformative education” where the person finds himself pivotal in creating space for value-based change.

This focus is a hallmark of St. Marie Eugenie’s philosophy—to help shape society with the formation of “men and women who have learned to be contemplative in the midst of everyday life, bringing in the deep values and beliefs of a Christian faith and living this out.”

The consciousness is carried by its alumnae who are homemakers, social and cultural arbiters, government officials including a president, CEOs; wives to captains of corporations and industries, leading lights of the Religious of the Assumption order, and even an NPA amazon (Concha Araneta: HS 1967 who belies the high society image).

Mother Marie Eugenie awardees, like Ma. Josefina Villanueva Rivas, (1970) who says “all my dealings and actions towards my fellowmen most especially to those who are within my sphere of influence has been largely centered ... on the values nurtured by Mother Marie Eugenie.”

The values are simplicity and truth, peace and justice, faith, love and joy.

“Giving all I can do to help is a simple gesture albeit difficult and tiring but very fulfilling. I don’t know where I get the energy but it seems that I draw from a spirit within me. As a pediatrician, I continue to give service to the indigents of Sta. Maria Parish (in Iloilo city); to remain humble despite all my blessings” —Ana Eva Tirador, MME Awardee, 1979.

The social conscience manifests in the school policy that allowed our college batch (1968-72) to participate in militant student movements such as the National Union of Students of the Philippines when we marched brandishing flags and banners down the city streets and held “DGs” or informative talks about the country’s situation.

This generation responded to the oil spill problem in Guimaras in 2006.

TURMOIL AT SEAFDEC

SINCE we started exposing the anomalies and shenanigans at SEAFDEC, we have been receiving many reactions from the employees themselves who are helpless and incapable of correcting the abuses and mismanagement of the present administration.
Here is one of the text messages:
– 0919391022*
We hope that through this column the administration of Pres. Noynoy will look into this serious allegation as prolonged unbridled anomalies and abuses at SEAFDEC are already signs of the virtual failure on the part of the Philippines to operate effectively this ASEAN association of fisheries.
The thieves keep on stealing and plundering the office.
Indeed, it is so shameful before the eyes of foreign nations that take notice that we are a nation of thieves.
Nakakahiya!

Its not actually comparing.
Look at the first sentence.... 'welcome to the humble city of Iloilo.'
Then check the second sentence... It does make sense. Its more of a welcoming gesture. (I find it not offensive but rather apologetic)

Like when you do visit somebody's house, 'Welcome to our humble abode. Pasensyahe lang amon balay ah. Pero feel at home lang.'

I mean its not a literal face off. Chillax Berns. :D
Its Manic Monday I suppose?

Please login or register to post comments.

^^
Yes, RED TAPE should be lessened if not totally eradicated! Go for it!

And esp the last sentence: Mayo na kay wala mangdaya sang attendance.
Thats the beauty of BIOMETRICS. Call Centers have been doing that for a long time. :D

IBC to publish first coffee table book on businesses in Iloilo City

ILOILO CITY, Aug. 9 (PNA) –- The Iloilo Business Club (IBC) here is set to publish the very first coffee table on business in Iloilo City.

Leah Lara, executive director of the IBC, said the book is the first of its kind in Iloilo City and will contain the evolution of business in the metro.

Lara said it will also feature the successful business of Ilonggos and on how they were able to progress in the local and international arena.

Likewise, the book will have topics, interviews and insights, business tips and trade secrets coming from prominent Ilonggo business tycoons.

The profiles of businessmen in Iloilo through the years will also be included, she said.

The coffee table book will also show the history of the old central business district, the first business establishments starting from the pre-Spanish days, up to entry of the vast Chinese community as well as the contribution of the local government to the improvement of the city’s business surge.

The book will also feature Iloilo City’s investment and infrastructure programs, its sudden entry into the map of business process outsourcing map and the business direction for the city in the coming years.

The IBC hoped that the book will attract more investors in the city, as it showcases why Iloilo City is one of the best investment venue in the region and in the country, Lara added.

She said it is part of the IBC’s upcoming 20th anniversary slated this year. (PNA)

Chicken chain threatens Chowking

CHOWKING will not admit it, but some of its franchisees believe that the Chinese quick service restaurant chain of Jollibee Food Corp. is feeling the heat from competition posed by Mang Inasal, a chain of chicken restaurants started in Iloilo City that is expanding at a furious space.

Chowking has already initiated some management changes, including the replacement of Erwin Elechicon effective May 16 this year with Ariel Fermin, who now heads both Chowking and pizza chain Greenwich.

Franchisees in the know tell Biz Buzz that this major change was prompted in part by the aggressive expansion of Mang Inasal, which will have 300 stores by the end of the year.

Some of Chowking’s executives have even moved to Mang Inasal.

Edgar Sia, the young owner of Mang Inasal, however, says that Chowking does not have anything to fear from Mang Inasal, although he did admit that some of Chowking people—as well as those from other food companies—are now on his team.

“They should not be threatened by such a small player like Mang Inasal, they are already giants,” says Sia.

This small player, however, may just turn out to be a David to the Goliath that is Chowking, which has 408 branches as of end-June. Tina Arceo-Dumlao

Iloilo solon confident about passage of proposed city redistricting bill
By TARA YAP
August 22, 2010, 5:14pm

ILOILO CITY - Iloilo City Rep. Jerry Treñas is confident about the passage by the 15th Congress of his bill which seeks a dividing of Iloilo City into two districts.

“Eight out of ten,” Treñas said in rating the chances House Bill 2061 will be passed by the House.
Treñas disclosed that the bill has gone through the first reading in the Lower House and is now with the House Committee on Local Government.

He said he will lobby for the support of Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who is Chairman of the Senate’s Committee on Local Governments.

The bill, originally filed by former Rep. Raul Gonzalez Jr. as House Bill 3672, calls for the creation of an additional legislative district for Iloilo City with two separate budget allocations.

In Treñas’ proposed bill, the first district will be comprised of Jaro, La Paz and Mandurriao while the City Proper, Molo and Arevalo shall comprise the second district.

Treñas brushed off politics as his motive for seeking enactment of the bill, insisting that dividing Iloilo City into two congressional districts will be beneficial to the City.

“It is for us,” he stressed. “It will give Ilonggos two voices in Congress and an additional allocation,” Treñas said.

In the 14th Congress, the Lower House approved Gonzalez Jr.’s HB 3672 which got stalled in the Senate.

Former Senator, now President Benigno Simeon S. Aquino III, who was then Senate Chairman of the Committee on Local Government, said Gonzalez’s proposal did not meet the population requirement. Under the 1986 Constitution, each district must have a population of 250,000. ‘

Meanwhile, Treñas has been appointed Chairman of the House Committee on Good Governance and Public Accountability which will take the lead in probing major issues such as the controversial humongous salaries of some heads of government-owned and controlled corporations (GOCCs).

Trenas said he will discuss with his senior Vice Chairman as to how they will prioritize issues based on the impact or significance of the bills being referred to them.

Initially, there were four bills referred to the plenary and more are coming, he said. (With a report from PNA)

Iloilo City Charter Day celebration
to replicate festivities 73 years ago

ILOILO City – This year’s celebration of the city’s Charter Day will attempt to replicate what happened when it was first celebrated 73 years ago.

According to City Tourism and Development Office (CTDO) chief Benito Jimena, they are trying to collate data to come up with memorable activities given the very limited time they have.

The celebration that kicked off July 16 and will culminate on August 25.

Very aggressive gid si Cong. JPT mapasar ang pagdivide sang Iloilo City into two districts.

^^bira congressman because the city really needs additional allocation for future projects and take the lead:bash::bash:

P407-million infra projects under probe

By DAVID ISRAEL SINAY

ILOILO – The Department of Public Works and Highways – Internal Audit Service (DPWH-IAS) sent an investigator here to verify the alleged irregularities in the awarding of contracts for four major infrastructure projects by the previous administration.

IAS Director Ardeliza Medenilla tasked Ranulfo Suyom of DPWH-IAS “to investigate and gather documents” on the complaint filed by former Provincial Administrator Manuel Mejorada, DPWH Regional Director Rolando Asis admitted.

Mejorada earlier asked DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson “to suspend” the implementation of projects that the previous administration commenced, claiming that these were put up for bidding by the agency without the necessary funding appropriation, in gross violation of the government procurement law.

Mejorada, in his complaint dated July 22, 2010, said the bidding conducted on May 7, 2010 were undertaken “without the Approved Budget for the Contract (ABC) having been determined.

There was no basis for establishing the Approved Agency Estimate (AAE) for each contract.”

The lump sum appropriation of P600 million, released under Special Allotment Release Order No. A-10-05014 to cover the contracts, was only issued by the Department of Budget and Management on May 21, 2010, “a full two weeks after the opening of bids,” he said.

The SARO included various infrastructures, including local projects for roads, highways and bridges in the amount of P545 million, and for flood control totaling to P55 million. It was signed by then Budget Secretary Joaquin Lagonera.

On May 24, 2010 the notice of awards were issued to contractors and the following day, May 25, 2010, the signing of contracts between the contractors and the agency took place. The DPWH regional office’s Bids and Awards Committee approved the resolution declaring the winning contractors on May 14, 2010.

On May 26, 2010, the contractors were issued with the notice to proceed.

Mejorada said: “The unusual speed by which the notice of award, acceptance by the contractor and the notice to proceed – all taking place within five days after the SARO was issued – makes it apparent that this was a last-minute rush to award the contracts before the term of the previous President ended.”

“Experience has shown that even the release of the SARO could take several weeks as it grinds through the bureaucratic mill. In this case, DPWH Region 6 already had a copy three days after it was issued. And then all the documents were ready to be signed,” he stressed.

Mejorada identified the projects as follows:
* P163.4-million replacement of the E. Marcos Bridge in Maasin, Iloilo
* P81.4-million completion of the Camanggahan Bridge in Guimbal, Iloilo
* P101.4-million completion of B. Aquino Bridge in Leon, Iloilo; and
* P61-million repair and rehabilitation of the Leganes-Dumangas Coastal Road.

However, Asis maintained that the bidding and the awarding of contracts were all “aboveboard.”

“We will cooperate in the investigation. We have provided (Suyom) all the documents regarding the projects,” Asis said. “We do not hide anything here. The investigation will prove that everything was lawful,” he added.

Mejorada pointed out that the implementing rules and regulations of the government procurement law require that every contract must have a corresponding appropriation before it is put for bidding.

Asis said the bidding was made, even without the SARO, because “these were urgent projects.”

“These were originally requested for rehabilitation as part of all the severely damaged infrastructures during Typhoon Frank and we were trying to fast-track their implementation,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, former Presidential Assistant for Western Visayas Raul Banias, now Iloilo Provincial Administrator, admitted that he facilitated the budgetary allocation for the rehabilitation of the infrastructure projects.

“My role was to get the approval of the funds as the executive director of Task Force Bangon Panay,” he said.

The task force was assigned to identify the priority projects needing rehabilitation, and to oversee the implementation.

Mejorada claimed Banias orchestrated the whole transaction and that the contracts were rushed to help raise election spending money for the allies of then President Arroyo in Iloilo.

“I cannot comment on that. I leave that to the DPWH to qualify on their procedure of the bidding process,” Banias said. “I have no role in the bidding.”

Mejorada also requested Budget Secretary Florencio Abad to probe the “grossly irregular transaction which could only add to the budget deficit that the national government is now facing.”/PN

Firm set to break ground on wind project

ILOILO CITY -- Guimaras Governor Felipe Hilan A. Nava said Trans-Asia Oil & Energy Development Corp. will hold groundbreaking ceremonies next month for its wind power project here.

The initial phase of the project, the first in Western Visayas, will be constructed in Barangay M. Chavez in San Lorenzo town, he said.

Other possible sites for the first windmill project in Western Visayas are Barangay Sabang in Sibunag and Barangay Salvacion in Nueva Valencia, all in Guimaras.

Mr. Nava said the project will initially produce eight megawatts (MW).

Production will gradually be increased to 54 MW. Guimaras’ power demand is between 5 MW and 6 MW but its sole power provider, a bunker oil plant, can only produce 3 MW, resulting in rotating brownouts in the island-province.

The oil and energy producer, a unit of listed holding firm Phinma Corp., owns the 3.4-MW bunker fuel-fired power plant in the town of Jordan.

Investors and the provincial government are also mulling the installation of a new submarine cable that will connect Guimaras to Iloilo once the windmills are in place.

“We could be selling power to Iloilo and Panay in the future,” said Mr. Nava.

Trans-Asia had said it would invest $300 million on 10 wind power projects, with a combined capacity of 123 MW.

Subsidiary Trans-Asia Renewable Energy Corp. had been given 20 wind energy service contracts by the Energy department.

Kaladlawan! This anomaly happened during the time of former governor Tupas and he was also the provincial administrator. Why did they pushed through the bidding when they knew that there were anomalies and no Approved Budget for the Contract? Or let it say nga wala sila kabalo pero responsibilidad nila nga mahibal-an tungod ara sila magbantay.

This time lang nga manug sugod na ang mga proyekto subong lang sila nagwangal.

Come on, Boy! Ano gid bala ang toyo mo? Tell us what have you done during your time as a provincial administrator?

Iloilo City Charter Day celebration
to replicate festivities 73 years ago

ILOILO City – This year’s celebration of the city’s Charter Day will attempt to replicate what happened when it was first celebrated 73 years ago.

According to City Tourism and Development Office (CTDO) chief Benito Jimena, they are trying to collate data to come up with memorable activities given the very limited time they have.

The celebration that kicked off July 16 and will culminate on August 25.

Subsidiary Trans-Asia Renewable Energy Corp. had been given 20 wind energy service contracts by the Energy department.

this will help us big-time,, excess MW from Guimaras wind project will augment our lack of supply.:cheers:

If the previous administration do their job indi siguro mag-amo sini!

^^why are you so affected with that post? that's no big deal really.

^^
Its not actually comparing.
Look at the first sentence.... 'welcome to the humble city of Iloilo.'
Then check the second sentence... It does make sense. Its more of a welcoming gesture. (I find it not offensive but rather apologetic)

Like when you do visit somebody's house, 'Welcome to our humble abode. Pasensyahe lang amon balay ah. Pero feel at home lang.'

I mean its not a literal face off. Chillax Berns. :D
Its Manic Monday I suppose?

I'm not furious with the first sentence, I am furious of the second. For crying out loud, why do you need to emphasize on what we have not and what they have? For Pete's sake, its not even necessary and I find it off. The main motive of the said event is to unite the Visayan blogging community, not emphasize the differences that we don't have and what they have. It doesn't make it as a community, but rather it makes an atmosphere of animosity.

For me, its okay to be humble, but too much--including words that are not supposed to be there, or shall I say excess--is bad.

Sorry if I rant that early, I just don't like anything that remains for comparison OR too much humility on our side. Don't tell me that Iloilo is a backwater city living with drugs, sex and tears. That's the time that I'll be apologetic.

Ngaa ikahuya kag igapa-emphasize ang pagpanubo sang Ciudad Iloilo sa mga bisita? Too much is something.

I'll have my visitors enjoy Iloilo as it is, not as a pretentious place.

Forgive my over-reacting. Its just another early Monday attack/.

This irritated me. I mean c'mon, we're not a backwater city right? As if Iloilo is like Ciudad Juarez--full of drugs and death. I guess that's too much humility to me and at the same time, comparison...Why say that? I think the first sentence was better.

That I understand, however, I don't really feel that we should be apologetic. Sometimes, we have to assert in a way that would be truthful.

hope you can share with us the discussions and proposals during the summit, at least on the part of Cebu, what were those suggestions presented by your teamthanks for visiting our thread sir !and also in Iloilo city for the transport summit.
i hope our local leaders has all the ample ideas now of solving the traffic problem in our city.
i heard your voice being interview in Bombo radyo:)

thanks. i have not really suggested much, ... only general concepts on how the
city (or MIGEDC) could approach the transport/traffic challenges.

firstly, my position in so far as urban planning and transport systems are con-
cerned is rooted on the premise that stakeholders should be the one to solve
their own problems and steer their own future. other people from other places
(even technical experts) should only lend lessons and experiences as inputs to
the process of planning and management ... one solution can not be trans-
ported from one place to another for each is unique and depends much on the
local aspirations. we ourselves in cebu try to study other places as much as
possible be we try to develop our own solutions to our concerns.

there are a few basic concepts we build on, though, mostly ideas we already
know but which we usually take for granted, or we don't think much of.

1. transport planning is different from traffic management. usually we think
of these as the same but they are not. in fact, i said in the summit that the
best way to address traffic problems (congestion) is not create it in the first
place ... meaning, a good long-term transport plan usually eliminate the need
to solve traffic congestion in the future. do traffic management but don't
forget to do transport planning, too, so that you may not need much manage-
ment in future.

2. the goal is mobility, not transport. how do we address the needs of our
people in their daily lives as they do a living and try to raise a family. go be-
yond solving how to transport a person from one place to another. that's
why land use is very important ... if you plan your land use well, you may not
even need to travel at all, or eliminate a lot of trips.

3. transport planning is all about the transport of PEOPLE (the passengers)
and not about vehicles. the moment you start solving a traffic problem by
counting cars and jeepneys, you're probably starting on the wrong foot. it's
always about people ... the cars are just accessories to the problem. that's
why in the end, congestion (traffic) is never solve - you alleviate it not by
adding road space but by shifting to mass transportation. another speaker
at the summit said that trying to widen the roads or adding new infrastructure
- circumferential roads, overpasses, etc., etc., is like trying to cure obesity
by buying bigger clothes ... je je je (kung si bernie pa) ... it's a long story
and may take up a long discussion on urban transport planning but the end
result is the same --- traffic congestion can never be solve by building more
roads or transport infrastructure.

the best indicator that you are on the right track is the fact that you
acknowledge the problem. and since you started by calling a transport
summit, i know you are serious in solving it. so again, congratulations and
keep up the good work. hope to visit again in the future ...

^^ Thanks Sir Paul. :okay: I should've attended your summit together with Sir Butch. Its indeed full of insights that MIGEDC should need from now and into the future.

Were there recommendations that are being eyed for MIGEDC, especially for the existing public transport and road infrastructure that the City of Iloilo and MIGEDC has?

I would like to ask this from you Sir Paul regarding the current status of planning. Is Iloilo City/MIDC a challenge to urban planning? Will it also encounter the same issues like that of Cebu City or Manila in the future? Your insights will be taken as a lecture, jejeje!! :D

I would like to ask this from you Sir Paul regarding the current status of planning. Is Iloilo City/MIDC a challenge to urban planning? Will it also encounter the same issues like that of Cebu City or Manila in the future? Your insights will be taken as a lecture, jejeje!! :D

not sure kung may recommendations cause i was on my way back to the airport
when the last session, "the way forward," was started, probably there were.
but i was happy cause i think they agreed to make this a regular activity, maybe
a yearly one. that should be good.

challenge? every city is a challenge. but the real challenge is how to learn
from the lessons of others who committed mistakes first and not repeat those
mistakes ....

^^ Another question Sir Paul, does the culture of a place take account also on urban planning? Would there any difference with the application of urban planning and zoning because of "the culture" or "the society?" Would some "schools of thought" or policies that were implemented in Cebú, be applicable to Iloilo? Or vice-versa?

It's more of a mash-up of urban planning and anthropology.

Sorry if I ask too much questions about it. Thanks. :D

thanks. i have not really suggested much, ... only general concepts on how the
city (or MIGEDC) could approach the transport/traffic challenges.

firstly, my position in so far as urban planning and transport systems are con-
cerned is rooted on the premise that stakeholders should be the one to solve
their own problems and steer their own future. other people from other places

- circumferential roads, overpasses, etc., etc., is like trying to cure obesity
by buying bigger clothes ... je je je (kung si bernie pa) ... it's a long story
and may take up a long discussion on urban transport planning but the end
result is the same --- traffic congestion can never be solve by building more
roads or transport infrastructure.

the best indicator that you are on the right track is the fact that you
acknowledge the problem. and since you started by calling a transport
summit, i know you are serious in solving it. so again, congratulations and
keep up the good work. hope to visit again in the future ...

thank you very much sir for giving us inputs and ideas regarding transport management and transport planning with regards to urban planning.
although it could be long term goal planning and implementation at least our local leaders are starting to acknowledge and serious about solving such problem.since every local LGU's are uniquely different from each other with regard to transport implementation and systems or some maybe similar i hope our local leaders come up a better ideas as of the moment.

Sir, is the highlighted statement applicable to Iloilo City as it is right now? I mean, this may be true with cities which have adequate road networks, but Iloilo City still needs more roads, IMO.

acknowledge the problem. and since you started by calling a transport
summit, i know you are serious in solving it. so again, congratulations and

Thanks for visiting and we hope to identify specific solutions for the city's transport and traffic problems next time. :)

Actually, I noticed, one side of JM Basa is full of pedestrians and sidewalk vendors, while the other side of it, has only few or none.

One-way schemes had been contemplated and tested before, but until the mayor has the political will to resist the pressure of the businesses along the affected routes, we might as well kiss it goodbye. Hope Jed is different.

Its just another early Monday attack/.

relax lang berns... i think readytogo said those words, in good faith and without malice whatsover. if ever, we have some weaknesses, it's better to acknowledge it, for that's one way of strengthening it. surely, we will emerge better than we were before. :)

The big question: Given the situation in Manila, how do we do some damage control after what happened in Manila...hostage crisis in Metro Manila. I guess, the thing called "layo naman Manila ah" does not apply, especially when it comes to encouraging investors and tourists here in the Philippines.

Who was responsible for the thing? Media? Police?
