wwwinz December 30th, 2010, 08:54 AM A reliable source told me SM's second mall will be constructed at its existing property in Mandurriao. That means that it will be on the same parcel of land as SM City-Iloilo. If that is the case, could it be considered a separate mall or just an expansion?
a reliable source also told me that the next sm mall will be located in oton in trapiche highway the 40 hectare property owned by the ramos along the highway and the family claims that construction will commence this may of 2011..sinu ma pusta?:lol:
crust86 December 30th, 2010, 09:06 AM kung gusto sang sm to put a second mall, i think in the other location. iba ang second mall sa expansion or annex.

Tuod Pre? Then I will have to admit that your reliable source is more reliable than mine.
The question is, why there?

Wow! This is intriguing. I'd say, why not?
More likely, the development at the existing mall would be just an expansion for the more I think about it, a second mall there would be absurd.
demonoid724 December 30th, 2010, 10:03 AM ^^after nagopen ang MOA daw nahilig ang SM sa mga properties nga lapit sa dagat.
maybe may plano man in the future ang SM to venture into other businesses like transportation (ferry and cargo services) on top of retail, banking, hotel and real estate.

The character of PDI is, in many ways, much like that of the city itself. Historically hip and at the same time, classically modern. Great concept by Florete.

Kung matuod ina, okey lang kay Oton has about 80,000 population which the biggest in the metro area aside from Iloilo City. Kung sa Trapiche ibutang, malapit lang ina sa Savannah which is also a sprawling and still expanding subdivision in Oton, San Miguel, Mandurriao area, kag alagyan sang transportation from Antique and southern towns of Iloilo. Ang isa pa, people go to where SM is. Sa tanan nga lugar sa Pilipinas nga may SM, pirme lang naga experience sang traffic and that place soon will not be an exemption.
Mas malapit pakadto sa Oton proper lusot sa Trapiche kon diri ka maagi sa Mandurriao lusot sa Savannah - Maestra Vita to Buray to Trapiche na.
habagatcentral1 December 30th, 2010, 10:41 AM ^^ May existing direct public transport from Polo Maestra Vita to Trapiche? Daw kabalo ko lang ang pa-Santa Clara to banwa nga jeep.
freezing_pt December 30th, 2010, 10:51 AM As for the SM expansion:
If the planned new SM Mall will be just be an expansion of the older one in Mandurriao, I see this as a good thing. This means that there is currently a demand in terms of retail spaces in the area. This is also a challenge for them to attract new tenants - a cyberzone perhaps, an i-max theater and other high end retail outfits.
If the planned new SM Mall though is built in another location, unless this mall is bigger, we will see the usual tenants that are currently occupying the old SM Mall in Mandurriao.

There's none. You need to have your own. Pero malay natin baka dumating ang time na magkaroon ng transpo from inside Savannah going to Trapiche!

If SM will build a mall in Oton, most likely it will be smaller (like 50-60ksqm). And it will house common retailers. And good choice for the south para may supermarket/department store naman sila daun. But, i am not sure if it is going to be like SM City. I bet it's going to be a Supercenter.
Anyways, the development of Iloilo Supermall(s) might be patterned to Cebu. Ako i believe that Sm Iloilo needs and expansion, not because it's literally small (well it's really big), but it's getting crowded. They need another wing to cater to more shops.
IMAX, i am not so sure.

Expanding a 100K ++ sq. m. mall and building another 60K ++ sq. m. mall is a testament to our purchasing power as a people. Imagine a city of only about 400K ++ people served by as much retail space. SM could have expanded in more populated cities but they chose us. I think we still have more retail space per capita compared to bigger cities which only have 60K ++ sq. m. malls.

Purchasing power plays an important role. With this 'inside info' from wwwinz the new SM Mall will cater to mostly Southern Iloilo route [Oton, Tigbauan, Guimbal, Tubungan, Igbaras, Miagao, & San Joaquin and Mandurriao, Pavia, San Miguel (Savannah Areas) and Antique route.

Thanks for posting kalil0! Seems a good location. If wwwinz can provide us with a single landmark it would be a lot easier to pinpoint the probable location. I ended up editing the San Miguel map instead (but still struggling with Google Map Maker, sigh!)!
I had been straining my eyes looking for that 40 Ha where the new Sm Mall will be probably built. I am still debating with myself whether to look for an area fronting the shore or an inland area like what you have posted. :D

I also cannot find a 40-ha contiguous parcel of land along the sea shore that's why I assumed that it will probably be across the highway. The area I shaded though is much less than 40 has. It is just an approximation. :)

I am not sure if the location is correct because what I know Trapiche is the 1st barangay after Poblacion south going to southern Iloilo towns. It is after Anhawan Beach which is located in South Poblacion. Ang umpisa sang Trapiche ara lang pagtapos sang Anhawan Beach kag asta ina sa may bridge - sa pihak sini Botong na. Seems this is the only logical location. I tried looking at Google map and this area fits since its mostly uninhabited. Yes, it is less than 40 Has, maybe the land is irregularly shaped? And maybe it also extends towards the back area and front area and on both sides as well?
Maybe the fishponds and Villa Rica beach Resort plus the shore is included?

Yes hehehe! wwwinz where are you? hehehe :D
The area I shaded is about 20 Has.
^^
Yes, almost about... I tried measuring that on the map using a 'crude' technique (with 1 square kilometer equals to 100 hectares as reference point) and setting the elevation of the map to display 2000ft & 1 km on the lower left portion of the map. The rest is magic hehehe :D
^^ How can you measure the land area using Google Mapmaker/Earth?
Yes, you can! Use my crude technique, not 100% accurate though but you can have the approximate or at least an idea. :D

Wehehe!
Sta. Barbara is still a candidate though since SM has hectares of undeveloped land in there. BUT unlike Oton, we do not have any inside info regarding Sta. Barbara that is why Oton seems to hug the limelight for now. :D
And I agree that Oton site is looking more probable compared to Sta. Barbara given the fact that they have this idle land (40 Has --- which might have increased given the time period from the time it was purchased, that is if Sm is also buying adjacent lots) since the early 90's and wwwinz seems to know the people who sold the lot to SM personally (plus he was able to provide a starting date for construction).
Given the Oton location, maybe SM plans to incorporate a seaside residential/commercial community/bpo complexes in Oton? Given the power cost of Ileco 1 is way lower than PECO? I am just hazarding a guess, but anything is possible given the SM MOA experience. :D

Iloilo City To Welcome 2011 With Fireworks Displays, Music, Events
ILOILO City, Dec.30 (PIA)-- Fireworks displays, entertainment, family events will mark the New Year’s Eve of Ilonggos and visitors of this city.
This New Year’s Eve, two fireworks displays will light up the sky of this city where the public can enjoy and celebrate to welcome the New Year, 2011
The Iloilo City government will sponsor a Pyro Digital Musical Aerial Fireworks Display at midnight of December 31 along Trenas Boulevard in Mandurriao District.
According to the Iloilo City Information Office the pyro digital musical display will use a computer software-driven technology that triggers the firing of pyrotechnics synchronized with the music.
Alongside the fireworks display at midnight is the 60-second countdown that will be led by Mayor Jed Mabilog and Congressman Jerry Trenas.
To provide more fun and entertainment to the public there will also be a concert and a food festival. The concert will start at 6:00 pm which will be followed by the lowering of the 2010 tarpaulin at the Ayala Techno Hub building at 7:00 pm. The folding of 2010 tarpaulin will be done at 11:57 pm and the unfolding of the 2011 is set at 11:58 pm.
In a press report Mayor Jed Mabilog said the event intends “to ensure that our people won’t overdo on firecrackers, the reason why we are introducing a spectacular fireworks display for the enjoyment of everyone."
Another fireworks display and countdown will be launched at the new “lifestyle destination” in this city, the Plazuela de Iloilo on New Year’s Eve. The event will also feature live music and the Dekada band from Manila, food festival, and bazaar. There will also be door prizes that will be given to patrons.
Tonight at 7:00 pm, SM City Iloilo will also host a 5-minute fireworks display to be held at its carpark.
SM City Iloilo Public Relations Officer Troy Camarista said this is just a prelude for a spectacular firework that they are preparing during the Dinagyang Festival next month. (LAF/PIA6)

It is more likely, I think. Very good observation. We will see if the retail component of MW will be that of Ayala's though not still discounting the fact that MW is into retail as well (Eastwood Cybermall & Eastwood Mall both in Libis for example).

spacewagon0001 December 31st, 2010, 09:36 AM Privatization of city slaughterhouse eyed
ILOILO City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog is eyeing the privatization of a city-owned slaughterhouse if a contractor-supplier charged P100 million or more for the upgrading of equipment and facilities of the abattoir.
Mabilog also asked Francis N. Celones of FNC Food and Beverages Machinery Technology and Services based in Baesa, Quezon City to immediately submit a proposal on the rehabilitation and upgrading of the slaughterhouse in Tacas, Jaro district to make the facility profitable for Iloilo.
Celones, an accredited equipment manufacturer and supplier, has branded the existing city slaughterhouse at Tacas, Jaro as way below the "Double A" standards and does not meet the requirements set by the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) of the Department of Agriculture.
Similarly, Celones promised to submit a rehab master plan to the city mayor in two weeks time that will consider hygiene, environment and user-friendly abattoir facility.
According to Celones, the unnamed contractor-builder of the slaughterhouse five years ago had many violations and discrepancies in the design to meet the standards.
He added the construction design of the holding pens is way below standards and there is no existing water treatment facility to treat the wastes.
Celones was the one accredited by NMIS to supply the equipment currently being used at the city slaughterhouse. The equipment bear the name of FNC and Mabilog said he instructed the staff to look for the manufacturer-supplier.
The mayor said he wanted the slaughterhouse to be profitable, clean and efficient so that the end-users will have clean and safe meat.
The city mayor also wanted the slaughterhouse to be recognized as a Double A facility with processed meat ready for exports to other cities and probably abroad.
However, the boiler and scalding vat were destroyed recently and so with other equipment not appropriate for a slaughterhouse to meet the requirements as a safe abattoir, such as the railings and slaughter equipment for hogs and large animals.
Celones also said the design must conform to standards, and there is an urgent need to upgrade the building and the facilities especially the holding pens for pigs and cattles.
Celones said P70 million might be needed to rehabilitate the whole slaughterhouse complex or about P30 million for the upgrading of equipment alone.
The city slaughterhouse slaughtered 300 pigs and 30 to 40 cattles and other big animals every day. The supplier said this could easily handle more than P20-million gross revenue a year if the facility is rehabilitated and upgraded. (Lydia C. Pendon)

spacewagon0001 December 31st, 2010, 09:38 AM Mayor's secret: Strong political will
A STRONG and dynamic political will attributed to the good start of Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog's governance in the last six months of 2010.
Mabilog is a young man in a hurry. At 45 years old, he just wants to achieve things for the city that he loves and he minces no words to get people and things to move in the developmental direction he wants.
This is an observation of a senior citizen in Barangay Gloria after seeing the chief executive roll up his sleeves to get a project under way in the barangay.
Acknowledging the cooperation of city department heads and the private business sector here, Mabilog was able to achieve almost half of the 10-point agenda for three years that he pledged the people during the May 2010 election period.
The city mayor had pledged a city community college and a local businessman immediately put up P25-million donation for the construction of the building.
He promised full implementation of rusting city ordinances and constituents and transients are now on the lookout for task force agents apprehending violators of city ordinances on anti-jaywalking, anti-smoking and anti-littering.
The first coal-fired power plant envisioned to provide sufficient power to the city and the rest of Panay Island is now operational after it was commissioned in late November 2010 and Mabilog was the first to observe its test operation, and now its full capacity.
The city chief also led a delegation to Chicago, USA, last November 2010 to receive a gold award for the city for its Iloilo City River Development Project during the international LIVCOM Awards.
He is also the first city mayor to lead the first Iloilo City Charter Day celebration last July 2010 and to make the celebration a yearly important tourism activity of the city on top of the Dinagyang Festival.
Under his administration, the first stage of the multi-billion-peso Iloilo Flood Control Project was completed and this averted at least three city floods in August and October.
After the city was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Institute for Solidarity, the City Treasurer's Office is also recognized as the best revenue center by the Bureau of Internal Revenue. The city also gets recognition for having the best local civil registrar and city assessor.
The Department of Interior and Local Government recently honored the city with the 2010 Excellence in Administrative Governance Award, recognizing Iloilo City as the Best Performing City in Western Visayas.
But Mabilog will not sit complacent on his early laurels as he vows to apply his strong political will to solving the severe water problem created by the Metro Iloilo Water District.
MIWD will have to gust enough water for the city or go bust against the Mabilog political will. (Lydia C. Pendon)

I would loved Ayala to have a mall in the city BUT I wouldn't want it to be in Megaworld site. Ayala should get their own lot in the city to build their mall cum business centre. Otherwise, there's a huge area within Metro Iloilo of MIG (metrotowns) that can be developed into a new business nerve.:banana:

I guess, to put everything into place, the redistricting should be play an important role.

Alvaro Pertierra hi rock thanks for the pics, the house was built by andres luna de san pedro, juan luna's only remaining child. I have heard about the haunted stories including my great grandfather walking without his head on. funny though, he died with hi...s head intact. Mom has lived there and has never seen a ghost. But i know people think the house is haunted. It was donated by my family when my great grandfather passed away. It was built around a 150 hectare lot so the family could have space.
during those days a blank check was given to Andres Luna. Rose petals filled the driveways during its inauguration. During the war the guerilleros tried to burn the house down 8 times without success. only the curtains burned and the main chandelier that hung on the spiral staircase fell and shattered into pieces, a testament to Andres' structure as even now there have been no major repairs on the house.
Is was, in the 30's supposedly, the most beautiful house in south east asia, even then foreign magazines took note of it. One morning not long before the war started, the whole family was having breakfast and heard the large gates open. President Quezon and his aide Amb. Nieto arrived unannounced. He had breakfast with the family and in the first floor terrace (on the right side) he looked out and told my Grandmother, "I would like to have a house like this when i retire." This was also the place mom found President Quezon sitting in the potty as she crossed the bathroom to chase after her sister. lol.

It was like any other stories I have heard or read... stuff that legends are made of (Thanks to Martin Soriano's articles in Panay News circa 2003-2005).
Iloilo's opulent past cannot be denied, it was written all over her face though as a sort of wrinkle in time now. It was like an era that is so dreamlike. These anecdotes of distant past seems an epoch of great wealth and proud yet noble Ilonggos. I would pay an arm and a leg to travel back in time and see and experience it myself. :D
Oftentimes I do wonder where the heck are these wealthy families now? Where are they & what they do now? Do they still care or look back to Iloilo as a home? Or completely forget Iloilo like a haunting past?
We are left with legends and stuff that resembles great exploits and achievements that looking back, it seems the past made more noise than the present. That whatever the present does or achieves can only mimic a faint echo of the past in terms of progress & development, culture & heritage, achievements and even urbanity.
Would it be possible to see or experience this in our lifetime? A sort of renaissance of Iloilo that is Glorious, Majestic and Noble?
I would love to. I am wishing like a child waiting by the window for that wish-granting shooting star.
Perhaps, rebuilding/restoring Iloilo to its former glory is a thing long gone and forgotten? Maybe we are running fast headlong into the future that we have forgotten what was once and focused on what will be?
Nostalgia, is indeed a mirror where one can look and feel young again, even for a moment. :)

My sincere apologies for the nostalgic outburst. Maybe its the new year.

WELCOME 2011.

AGREE! ILOILO and Guimaras has lots to offer. Amo gani nga kinahanglan naton ang highrises para nga maka-save kita space kag maka-benefit man ang iban nga investors sang lugar, especially foreign investors. BTW, ano na atong ILOILO-GUIMARAS Bridge man? Mangkot lang ako ah!
JollyGypsy December 31st, 2010, 07:03 PM that's a good point spacewagon, if we review the MIDC plans, naka established na yata ang mga satellite areas for expansion of the city. damo nga area ang potential for putting or establishing a nodes. i think sm will do that, to establish another business district. if they going to put it in oton, another core area na naman na for business.
SM needs highrise condos and hotel near SM City-ILOILO. Condo is very INDEMAND in ILOILO CITY! I can tell!:cheers::cheers::cheers::cheers:

Global Power readies $492-M project expansion in Visayas
MANILA, Philippines — As the energy-starved state of the country ushers in opportunities for investments, the Global Business Power Corporation (GBPC) of taipan George S.K. Ty will be pushing forward with its planned $492 million worth of investments for capacity expansion in the Visayas region.
The capital outlay will be for two units of 82-megawatt capacity expansion of the Cebu power facility
in Toledo City; and another 82-MW thermal plant in La Paz, Iloilo City. Both projects are targeted on stream by 2014.
GBPC director Alfred Ty stressed that “the need for power in the Visayas region will continue to grow, especially with the expected uptrend in the economy,” and this is where the economy has anchored its decision to invest further on power facilities in the area.
“We are now reviewing the various aspects of these investments, including market demand, timing, and project financing,” the younger Ty has added.
The group has just set on commercial operation early last year the initial unit of its 246-megawatt Toledo coal plant, shoring up capacity that partly eased brownout frequencies in the Cebu area.
In Iloilo, the company noted that the construction of its 164-MW power plant is on track and will likely hit target of commercial operation this 2011.
On further capacity additions, Ty emphasized that “they are looking at adding two 82-MW plants in Toledo
City in Cebu and another 82-MW plant in La Paz, Iloilo City,” adding that “the projects, which would add 246 MW to the Cebu-Negros-Panay (CNP), are estimated to cost a total of $492 million and are targeted to be completed by year 2014.”
The Visayas area, according to Ty, would badly need capacity ramping up to underpin forecasts of sustained economic growth in the years ahead.
Once GBPC’s initial projects are completed, the group qualified that it will already be delivering a total of 410 MW newly-added capacity to the CNP grid by the first quarter of 2011. In total, the company counts 633 megawatts of total installed capacity under its sleeve, including those from previous acquisitions.
Ty explained that based on their study, “with the coming in of our three units in CEDC and some units from other suppliers, the supply in the CNP Grid will be secured until 2013.”
He has echoed warnings first verbalized by government though that the Visayas region will be needing
additional capacity again, to the magnitude of 50 megawatts by 2014; and additional 130MW by 2015.
Without new investments coming in on those periods, he cautioned that “the shortage will continue to increase until new capacity is added into the grid.” (MMV)

Seems he is. Perhaps Typhoon Frank [funny though that his cousin is named Frank, as in Frank Drilon :D] taught him a lesson he wouldn't forget for the rest of his life.
I am happy that at last Iloilo City [finally] deserves a mayor as great as he is. Former Mayor JPT was good but I think Mayor JPM is better if not the best. This is the kind of leader that we so yearn for, here in SSC Iloilo ever since we started. Through our conscious efforts and maybe our earnest desire, finally we can say that part of that wish is somehow granted. Now, we can safely say we have arrived. :)
And this year of 2011, we can expect more and a better Iloilo City through the able leadership of Mayor JPM and Cong. JPT.

I SO LOVE IT!!!!!
dagyang_grandson January 1st, 2011, 07:52 AM Global Power readies $492-M project expansion in Visayas

Alas, the video couldn't do justice to the magical lights and the reflection by the river. I can only imagine the grandeur of seeing it live by the river of Iloilo.
Many thanks to the one who uploaded the video. Hoping to see more photos and videos (hopefully in HD)
My hope is that this will be a yearly event and getting better every year.
Why not add a floating lights by the Iloilo River ala Riverbanks in Marikina?
That would be an added attraction too. :okay:

I shared the link of this video through Lew who posted it first. And a few second later somebody commented. Turns out it was my former Boss.
I will share the comment from my FB coming from my former boss who spent her New Year in SG.
Here goes, 'this is way better than the one i saw last night at the singapore countdown! astig tlga ang mga pinoy! :)'
I certainly agree! It will put to shame even candidates from other countries in last years Pyro Olympics held at The Fort (was it 2008 or 2009?). Even I, was so disappointed since I saw the 2008 Dinagyang Pyro Competition as way better than those entries. Whats more disappointing is that, you have to pay to have a better view. I think Bernie also went there, aight Bernie?
We will look forward for next years countdown to surpass this years countdown in scope and grandeur!:banana::banana:
Great Job Iloilo City & Mayor JPM! Certainly this will be an added attraction in the City of LOVE! :D

'Tyo Tagoy' January 2nd, 2011, 06:20 AM PPA to establish more VTMS in 2011
MANILA, Jan. 2 (PNA) -– Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) general manager Juan M. Sta. Ana announced that his agency will construct five more vessel monitoring traffic systems (VTMS) this year as part of its efforts to reduce maritime accidents in the country’s territorial waters.
Sta. Ana said that the additional VTMS will be installed on the ports of Romblon, Davao, Iloilo, Zamboanga, and General Santos.
He added that this will greatly augment existing VTMS installations in the Port of Manila, Corregidor Island, and Batangas.
The setting up of VTMS Control Centers in the above-mentioned areas aims to enhance the vessel traffic service of waterways, ensure safety of navigation of vessels, safeguard the security of vessels, facilities, individuals, and their properties; protect the marine environment of surrounding waters and to provide users of the VTMS timely information and necessary assistance within the VTMS covered area.
Sta. Ana said that the establishment of the VTMS is in accordance with the International Convention on the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) finalized in 1974.
The VTMS is the system commonly used by port operators to manage vessel traffic, monitor the port environment and as support to port and harbor resources. This can be compared with the air traffic control center (ATCC) for airports.
The PPA chief added that VTMS can also help in search and rescue of persons and vessels in distress and in the suppression of piracy and armed robbery at sea, and in other illegal activities at sea. (PNA)

ILOILO CITY, Jan. 2 (PIA)-- Both the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the local officials in Iloilo City said the celebration of the New Year has been generally peaceful and safe.
Iloilo City Police Provincial Dir. Marieto Valerio said the welcoming of 2011 was generally peaceful and quiet except for some stabbing incidents by people under the influence of liquor.
Valerio said they are also conducting a thorough investigation on the alleged inidscriminate firing by a certain agent of the Natonal Bureau of Investigation (NBI) here.
Meanwhile, Iloilo City mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said he was glad the celebration of the New Year here was safe and peaceful, as he observed there were fewer people who used firecrackers.
Mabilog, in cooperation with some private sectors had a fireworks display at the Trenas Blvd., attended by Ilongos during the New Year countdown on December 31.
He said the good impact of the fireworks display started this year, will encourage the city government to enhance the event next year and to turn it into a tourist attraction.
The mayor is also mulling the plan to gradually ban firecrackers in the New Year celebration in the years to come. (PIA6/ESS)

Without new investments coming in on those periods, he cautioned that “the shortage will continue to increase until new capacity is added into the grid.” (MMV)

spacewagon0001 January 2nd, 2011, 01:50 PM Dutch businessman to aid
Maasin’s bamboo prod’n
BY JEZZA NEPOMOCENO
ILOILO — A businessman from the Netherlands will donate 41 machineries to help improve bamboo production in Maasin town, according to the town mayor.
Ferdinand George Van des Spoel will provide machineries capable of manufacturing chopsticks, toothpicks and similar products in bulk, Mayor Mariano Malones Sr. said.
The machineries are set to be delivered this year, he said.
“With those machineries and technical assistance present, we can boost our production,” said Malones.
Malones said Spoel will also be instrumental in bringing the town’s bamboo products to the international market.
Spoel will help sell the products abroad, particularly in Europe, the mayor said.
Malones said he is eager to build a market for the town’s “best and finest bamboo products” abroad.
“We know we cannot compete with China in the international market, but with the support of many foreign investors interested in pouring in millions of investments on our bamboo, we can be one of (China’s) competitors,” he said.
The shortage of bamboo supply in Maasin will not be a hindrance in strengthening the town’s bamboo industry, he said.
The municipal government, together with various national government agencies like the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), will hold skills training for local farmers, particularly on proper bamboo cultivation and harvest.
The skills training — in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry and the Rotary Club — will start this month.
Also, Maasin allotted some 10 hectares of bamboo plantation to be used as the DENR’s techno-demo area for bamboo processing./PN
