- Yeah! How about Zamboanga, they are the one's who originated the term ''spanish city'' or ''latin city'' in the Philippines or Asia, and they do deserve those, so let's give respect to them, How about we make our own tag for this like:

- Viva Iloilo: The River City of the Phils.

- Viva Iloilo: The Museum City of the Phils. (from boss Haldir)

- Viva Iloilo : The Spanish-Colonial City of Love

- Viva Iloilo : The Venice of the Philippines.

- hahaha ga halo italy kag spain bah....corny nga mga taglines pero suggestions ko lang na ah..hehehe :bash::bash::bash:

Yes, they have to be VERY Careful, basi masuyaan naman. I would choose these two taglines, not perfect but can serve as a template for improvement: Viva Iloilo: The Museum City of the Phils. (from boss Haldir) & Viva Iloilo : The Spanish-Colonial City of Love.

Though we have a rich history, late kita sa paggamit sang mga words nga ginagamit na sang iban dugay na! Indi kita kapagusto gamit ang kung ano lang nga words as tagline for the city.

- I myself is not good in making tag lines or even PICK-UP lines :lol::lol: but I have to create a more original concept in order to avoid any conflicts, Tani amo na paminsaron anay nila. Kung tani nag lain nalang kapalaran sang Iloilo nga in the Philippines, kita lang naging province sang spain tapos nang lais mga espanyol kunu abi diri satun kag ang mga itsura sang mga tawo biskan timbang lang daw si Thalia ang tsura, angayan guid kita guru nga tawgon ''spanish city'', galing kay hindi...hehehe :bash::bash::bash:

Dumduman q kauna way back 90's....the only good thing about Dinagyang is waay klase kay tungod cng opening salvo :p... That was Malabor's time, noh? which i considered to be the Dark Age of Iloilo City... Ka.stagnant gid 2 yah cng everything.....

But now, I can now feel ang pagka-Festival Capital cng Iloilo.... kung Madugang Megaworld by next year....I wonder anu nah gid ka prestigious ang Dinagyang ^_^

^^I don't like the idea, we should have our own identity now indi puro na lang Spanish or whatever...com'n guys we are now moving slowly but surely gani we don't need to be called like Spanish capital....enough of the history of Spanish please! move forward Ilonggos to a better world.

- Some people specially in SSC don't want something ''nice or good'' will happen to our city. They simply want to see our city deteriorate in all aspect. When they saw and ''feel'' dinagyang is gaining popularity, they simply attack us with unkind words in order to elevate what they have. Kesyo, the grandest,the best the whatever so and so forth sila. The question is: So what?, that's why tamad na ta mag bais. Iban naman ya, kung may makita nga bag-o nga mall satun, na suya-an naman nila kag iban napangabay pa maputo kag ang lala pa guid gapangabay paguid sang another disaster, para siguro ma panas na sa mapa sang Pilipinas ang Iloilo, Kung paminsaron natun, grabe guid ang impact natun sa ila, Daw halos tanan gakatabo di satun, na notice nila. For some reason, GOD loves us so much that's why we are not being left behind despite of being discreet. Even from the start I had been lurking in SSC, I even saw some comments under estimating the capacity of our city to Handle several numbers of SM. Kung sige2x pa gyapon ang bira sa pinalangga ta nga syudad, teh wala nata may mahimo sina, Iloilo is an underdog, dapat guid man sila ma kulba-an. They don't know what ILOILO is capable of. Iloilo already proved it's significant power in southern philippines. It happened in the past and it will definitely happen again. bwahahaha :banana::banana::banana:

Mabilog boasts of clean Iloilo City

ILOILO City – Sustained clean-up efforts done by both the city government and private sector has made this city clean, said Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.

“We need to maintain what we’re doing,” he stressed.

Cleanliness of the city is foremost in his agenda as chief executive.

Together with the private sector, city departments like the City Environment and Natural Resources Office, Special Services Unit and the Office of General Services, ensure the upkeep of the metropolis on regular basis.

With this, Mabilog believes a clean-up plan to prepare the city for the Dinagyang Festival is no longer needed.

The project called “Iloilo City Squeaks for Dinagyang” or simply “Squeak” involves cleaning, greening and beautifying the city, in preparation for the festival especially during the three-day highlights on January 21 to 23.

It was supposed to happen yesterday in all parade routes but was canceled based on Mabilog’s declaration.

Meanwhile, the health and sanitation committee of the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. will deploy more than 100 street sweepers to maintain cleanliness before, during and after the festival.

Engr. Raul Gallo, committee chairman, said they will concentrate on parade routes and judging areas, including Plaza Libertad which will be near the center of revelry, food festival, and kiosk areas.

A total of 40 “portalets” (portable toilets) will likewise be placed in strategic locations.

JARO PLAZA A MARKET, NOT A CARNIVAL

THE Jaro Plaza has once more become a big, smelly and noisy marketplace. This happens annually when the fiesta of Jaro draws near.
In the olden days, the plaza became a “carnival” because of its many attractive sights. Now, it can hardly be called that; a big market-cum-videoke bar is more like it.
What is more deplorable is the vendors’ use of the sidewalks around the plaza. The people are forced to walk on the busy street because of this, exposing them to road accidents. Worse, the city government tolerates this year after year.
Will Mayor Jed be different from his predecessors in this regard?
Say mo, Norlito?

they need to relocate the squatters here and mga carinderia. Gapa-higko-higko sa ciudad especially nga lapit pa sa city hall. Also, refurbushed the Loney Monument, make it more attractive kay historical site ini siya sang city. If we want to sell our city as a tourism haven, we need to start cleaning up our backyard, and this area surrounding the upcoming city hall is the best place to consider first.

Btw, ang crane sa likod, part pa ina sang city hall construction?

Motocross to raise funds for
health, beautification programs

ILOILO City – The First Iloilo Dinagyang Invitational Motocircuit and Motocross Competition that kicks off today aims to raise funds for this city government's health and beautification programs.

Federico Rentoy of ProSports, the organizer of the event, said the proceeds will be utilized for the rabies and dengue awareness campaigns of the city and in the beautification of the Treñas Boulevard.

The Rotary Club of Iloilo West, which is also one of the organizers, will be given a share for its kidney transplant operation program.

The motocross circuit today will cover beginner, novice, intermediate, open, scooter and special event 50-up.

The motocross tomorrow, on the other hand, has three categories -- motard, enduro, and production.

The two-day competition will be held at the Prime Estate in Brgy. Nabitasan/Magsaysay, La Paz district. (PNA)

Well, its just my opinion. Its his opinion, its your opinion too. Ganun lang yun. Iba't iba ang taste ng tao at natural lang talaga na magkakaroon ng oposisyon. May gusto ng kapeng barako, yung isa cream and sugar, yung isa mapait, yung isa matamis. Tanungin mo sila kung ano pinakamasarap na kape, iba't iba ang sagot.

And I don't think they create disorder when they contest your opinion. Nagkakaroon lang ng disorder kung below the belt na ang tama, IMO.

Sa next year siguro, I-avoid ta na lang ang mga sweeping statements kay kung mag gamit kita sang term na festival, it's a very broad and all-inclusive statement...it would seem to include even the paraw regatta, the panabenga in baguio (which uses floats with flowers), pahiyas festival, which uses kipling and usually celebrated by decking houses with it...and many more....so, daw mas mayo na mag declare na SOME festivals, instead of just using the word festival without any qualificatory words.

I say some, because I saw the Talong Festival, the Bangus Festival both in Pangasinan, the Fish Festival in Navotas exhibit elements similar to dinagyang... Ano pa na festival.... Caracol of Makati?

Anyways, I think it would be more prudent for use to use the term, some to qualify the word, festival.

they need to relocate the squatters here and mga carinderia. Gapa-higko-higko sa ciudad especially nga lapit pa sa city hall. Also, refurbushed the Loney Monument, make it more attractive kay historical site ini siya sang city. If we want to sell our city as a tourism haven, we need to start cleaning up our backyard, and this area surrounding the upcoming city hall is the best place to consider first.

Btw, ang crane sa likod, part pa ina sang city hall construction?

pre, ginaproblemahan nya na ang akon nga english grammar kuno kinamatis. gin-ako ko man sa iya nga mahina ako dira. problema man sya sa kalidad sang edukasyon ko. daw wala man ko problema sa kalidad sang edukasyon ko, nakapasar ako sa 2 ko nga board exams biskan wala ko ka attend review session sa review center. abi nya siguro may english subject board exams namon. hahaha!

Walang problema 'don. Admit ko mahina ako sa English. Hindi naman ako Amerikano bakit kailangan ko mahiya na mahina ang sa english grammar. Balanse lang mahina ang english grammar ko pero mas lamang ako sa siguro sa ibang subjects. :D

3,500 cops, volunteers to secure Dinagyang

ILOILO CITY – Some 3,500 peace keeping forces will jointly secure the Dinagyang Festival highlights slated on January 22-23, 2011.

SSupt. Marietto Valerio, Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) director, said the security force includes 950 policemen from the Iloilo City and provincial police offices, new police recruits and regional public safety battalion

Other peace keeping volunteers are Philippine Army troopers who will man checkpoints at the boundaries of the city; 800 ROTC cadets from different schools, members of the Bantay Bayan and barangay tanods of barangays within the Dinagyang parade routes.
Valerio said the ICPO is putting up 10 subtask groups in 9 sectors including Plaza Libertad, Freedom Grandstand, Plazoleta Gay, Iloilo Capitol, SM Delgado, Corner of Ledesma and Quezon streets, corner of Iznart and Aldeguer streets, SM City and Boardwalk at the Diversion area.

Valerio said K-9 sniffing dogs will be dispatched in different performance areas before the start of the parade for clearing operations.

Valerio appealed to all spectators to refrain from bringing backpacks, bag or bayong while attending the parade in any of the four performance areas as these backpacks will be subjected to rigid police inspection.

Valerio said urinating in public places and littering of garbage are also strictly prohibited during the parade.

Photogs to vie in Dinagyang photo tilt

ILOILO CITY – More than 300 amateur and professional photographers all over the country are expected to converge in this city on the fourth week of this month to cover the world-famous Dinagyang Festival.

Similarly, these photographers are enjoined to participate in the Dinagyang photo contest to win valuable prizes such as cash and television sets, according to Ronnie Gabalda, head of the photo contest committee.

Gabalda said the contest has two categories: the Ati Contest which shall focus on the ati participant during the Dinagyang ati-atihan contest on January 23 and the Religious activity that connects the celebration to its religious roots. Photo should be taken from January 17-23, 2011.
The criteria include visual impact: 30 percent, technical aspect that include exposure and focus, 30 percent and artistic aspect that include creativity and composition, 40 percent.

Gabalda said the photo entries must be 8x10 or 8x12 color prints without border. Digital entries must submit the digital files on JPEG or TIFF on a CD on actual size with at least 150dpi. Negatives must accompany the film entries.

Each participant can submit a maximum of 5 entries per category with an entry fee of P120 per photo submitted.

A rigid screening of entries will be conducted and the finalist photos will be displayed in a photo exhibits at the SM City on February 7-13, 2011 where the judges will select the winning photos. Old photographs of previous Dinagyang festivals will also be exhibited at SM City on January 16-23, 2011.

Prizes include P5,000, P3,000 and P2,000 for top three winners on the Religious category while television sets will be awarded to winners in the Ati category.

ILOILO CITY - Ramdam na ramdam na ngayon sa lungsod ng Iloilo ang Dinagyang fever matapos pormal nang nagsimula ang Dinagyang Festival 2011.

Sa isinagawang opening salvo kaninang hapon, pormal na binuksan ni Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog ang isang linggong selebrasyon ng Dinagyang Festival na magtatapos sa Enero 23.

Nagbigay kulay sa pagbukas ng Dinagyang Festival ang patikim na performance ng 14 na tribu na lalahok sa pinaka-inaabangang Ati-Ati tribe competition na nagbigay aliw sa apat na judging area.

Napag-alaman na kahit sa opening salvo pa lang may inilaan nang premyo ang lungsod kung saan P20,000 ang para sa makakuha ng may pinakamagandang performance at tig-P15,000 naman sa best in custome at best in discipline.

Sa kabila naman ng pagpatak ng ulan, napuno pa rin ng mga tao ang mga lansangan sa lungsod ng Iloilo lalo na sa city proper area para makibahagi sa pagbukas ng itinuturing na best tourism event sa bansa.

No smoking, littering at Dinagyang

ILOILO CITY, Philippines – The city government here will strictly enforce its smoking ban and anti-littering ordinances during the forthcoming Dinagyang Festival – Iloilo’s No. 1 tourism event, and religious and cultural celebration in honor of the Sr. Sto. Niño slated from January 22 to 23.

City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the move is part of his overall program to maintain the cleanliness of the regional center that he hopes to transform into a premier city by 2015.

Mabilog said they have been keeping the city clean and that they want to maintain this state even during the Dinagyang celebration when thousands of tourists, visitors, and revelers flock here to witness and join the festivities that will culminate with the Kasadyahan cultural festival on January 22 and the Ati Tribes Competition on January 23.

During the festivities, the city government will deploy personnel to clean up the areas where the cultural groups and Ati tribes will perform as well as areas designated for other activities that are part of the festival.

Portable toilets will also be installed for personal calls in strategic areas in the downtown area which will serve as the center of the festivities.

The Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) has declared the annual festival as the country’s best tourism event for the past three consecutive years.

Meanwhile, the Region 6 office of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA-6) is on high alert to curtail the distribution of illegal drugs this Dinagyang.

PDEA-6 Director Paul Ledesma disclosed that the agency is continuing its anti-narcotics operation even though its pre-emptive measures were in place since December 2010.

“We have conducted operations, specifically targeting drug couriers and maintainers in our effort to ensure that the Dinagyang will be more peaceful and safe,” Ledesma said.

Outside of its internal operations, Ledesma applauded the reactivation of Task Force Bakhaw in Mandurriao district and the creation of Task Force Malipayon-Delgado at the city proper last November by the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).

“They have practically clamped down on the two drug havens and have driven them out,” Ledesma explained.

Both special task forces, which was initiated by Chief Supt. Cipriano Querol Jr., destroyed drug dens in this city’s two most notorious drug villages and drastically reduced the buying and selling of illegal drugs.

“This allowed us to identify their network outside and strike them,” Ledesma added.

Ledesma explained that drug dealers are now looking for other places to store drugs prior to distributing it as the highlight of the festivity is fast approaching.

However, with the two task forces, drug trading this Dinagyang will be harder for drug peddlers to freely move around, he said.

Ledesma emphasized that even with the help of the police, PDEA-6 will not rest as the demand for illegal drugs will increase next week with thousands of merrymakers are expected to flock to this city for the festivity.

Parte sa taste, daw maayo ang igo sang Afrique's da sa Robinson's haw? :nuts: Sang pag labay namon didto last Friday, puno sang mga tawo ang Afrique's. Unlike before sang ang Gustavian pa da ang ga occupy nga wala naman ya gawa tawo. :lol:

Foreign fotogs, travel agents
to join Dinagyang Festival

ILOILO City — Foreign photojournalists and travel agents are expected to join the 2011 Dinagyang Festival, an annual festivity of this city held in honor of Señor Sto. Niño.

Department of Tourism 6 Director Edwin Trompeta said they have invited foreign photojournalists and travel agents or travel marketing people to cover and help promote the Dinagyang Festival.

Trompeta said participants from Asia, Europe and North America will start arriving next week.

To date, according to the Iloilo City Information Office, more than 200 local, national and foreign media practitioners have submitted their applications for accreditation to cover the event.

The festival, which has grown over the years, has attracted not only local and international tourists but also media practitioners through its various features, foremost among which are the Kasadyahan Festival and Ati competition.

This year, nine performing tribes will participate in the Kasadyahan Festival on January 22.

The event is participated in mostly by the different municipalities of Iloilo, showcasing their festivals.

On the other hand, the Ati competition is the main attraction of the week-long festival.

During that event, competing tribes in their colorful costumes made of indigenous materials perform to the beat of the drums.

A total of 14 tribes will vie for the grand prize in this year’s competition on January 23.

Other attractions this year include the Dinagyang Photo Exhibit on January 16–23; “Luces in the Sky,” a fireworks competition, on January 21–22; Food Festival on January 19–23; and the Religious Sadsad on January 22. (LAFrench/PIA/PN)

Ynion elected IPC president

ILOILO City – The revitalized Iloilo Press Club (IPC) is finding zest after some years of moribund existence with the election of its interim set of officers held Saturday, January 15 at Hotel del Rio.

Rommel Ynion, chairman and publisher of The News Today, was elected unanimously as president in a meeting of IPC members coming from the cross-section of the print and broadcast media.

A philanthropist and successful businessman, Ynion is constructing the Iloilo Press Club Buildings worth P30 million. He used to work with the Manila Bulletin as proof reader and later became section editor of the Philippine Star.

IPC members from local newspapers Panay News, Daily Headlines, The News Today, Hublas nga Kamatuoran, News Express, Public Mirror, as well as broadcasters from Bombo Radyo, ABS-CBN, Aksyon Radyo, RMN, GMA and other independent media outlets joined the meeting and election.

In the meeting, IPC members decided to propose several amendments to the Constitution and by-laws of the press club. These are to be submitted for voting and ratification in a general assembly later this year prior to the regular election of officers on the second week of December.

Maasin to host Regional Math Camp

ILOILO – More than 100 high school math teachers in Western Visayas are to play and learn on February 5-6, 2011 in the Regional Math Camp 2011 for Secondary Teachers at the Maasin Central Elementary School.

Sponsored by the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines-Iloilo Chapter (MTAP-IC), the said activity is supported through a memorandum by the Department of Education and is under the theme: Enhancing Teaching Strategies through Math Camp.”

“We are expecting to have teachers and graduating college math majors to join us in this fun event,” said Dr. Alona Belarga, newly re-elected president of the MTAP-IC, adding, “rain or shine, the get-together will definitely make the moment of the participants worthwhile.”

Prof. Mario Banavo, the Math Camp organizer, said, “We have prepared for this since late last year. We have made sure that the participants will be busy having fun learning and competing for the whole duration of the camp with the math-based games and activities especially made for them.”

^^if only some of our towns are merged with neighboring towns or brought back to its mother town because our towns are very small (in land area),, example are Pavia, Mina, Bingawan, Estancia, etc which are even smaller than the small Iloilo City(60sqkm).. the Province has a small land area and we have 43-44 towns in it and worse, we keep on creating municipalities as of today (a bill creating Culasi town out of Carles).

Nakakadto ako na da sa ISCOF kag daku man ina nga school. That time damo sila enrollment sa maritime. Pero kon ako papilion mas gustuhon ko nga ngalan sa WVSCT ang Technological University or Polytechnic University kag okey lang ang Iloilo State University para sa ISCOF.

Our History :D

San Miguel, Iloilo - the town of good and friendly people. It is composed of 24 barangays. It is located 16 kilometers west of Iloilo City and surrounded with different towns such as Alimodian, Sta. Barbara, Cabatuan, Pavia, Oton and Leon. St. Michael the Archangel is the patron saint of San Miguel and every 8th of May, we are celebrating its annual patronal fiesta.

San Miguel formerly known as Anggoy, existed first as ranch which was part of encomienda of Oton. Later, when the population increased, movement was set ahead to recognize an independent town. Soon the the fonda was incorporated and a little stone church with a plaza was laid out for the people to gather during holidays. This affair has been made through the leadership of Solinap from the year 1759 to 1769.

In 1805, the gang of Moros and bandits under Magua-ay ransacked the convent and Padre Nicolas de Conception, parish priest of Anggoy was held at the bay. Miraculously, St. Michael made an apparition which caused the Magua-ay and his 50 companions to be in the state of terror and commotion. Through Tam Montoy of Alimodian and his men, they saved the priest and killed the enemies. Due to this situation, San Miguel was named tentatively and it made official in 1852 under the first captain Tibucio Montaño and the town was incorporated as pueblo, independent from Oton.

Before, people had no surnames and these were given in 1849 under Cabeza Regino Narciso. In 1864, under Capitan Balbino Salvo, the celebration of the first patronal fiesta was transferred from September 29 to May 8 every year. This is in commemoration of the day when St. Michael appeared in the year 1805.

In 1875, the big church was built and was inaugurated in 1882. In 1883, the streets and barrios were named after the Saints by Padre Angel. In 1896, Capitan Anacleto Saclauso came during the burst of the Hispano-American war which began in Cuba. General Diokno was dispatched in Panay by General Emilio Aguinaldo to indicate the rising revolt against the Spaniards.

In 1898, the American Occupation came. The Filipinos soldiers in San Miguel in coordination with the troops of General Martin Delgado joined the battle against the American Calvary and Sarascayan.

In 1912 to 1915, Damiano Saclauso was assigned in Leon as town head at the same time councilor inspector of San Miguel. He worked hard to separate the town of San Miguel from Leon and then on January 1, 1916, San Miguel was free and became a full-pledge municipality.

Presently, San Miguel is a progressing municipality pursuing its title to be the Kanding Capital of Western Visayas. The goat is the Angoyan’s extraordinary dish and the abundance of agricultural gift is still indisputable.

The improvement in education is spearheaded by the two leading schools, the San Miguel Central Elementary School and the Leonora S. Salapantan National High School. There are also eight elementary schools coming from the eight barangays outside the poblacion, the San Jose, Igtambo, San Antonio, Sto. Angel, Consolacion, Sta. Cruz, Sta. Teresa and Sto. Niño.

Tani di na ta mag create additional municipality sa aton province. Para mamet man sng mga towns ang requirements to become a city someday. Ang land area tama na ka kulang.

Sano pa maging city ang:
- Dumangas (dako ang potential since lapad ang land area more than 100sq.km)
- Pototan (daw 97sq.km lang kulang pa 3 kms. - daw sng una pa man ni napropose ano status sini?) ^^ ^^
- Sta. Barbara (pasado man sa land area - income nalang a.) :banana: :banana:

Muni sila ang may dako nga potential maging city. :nuts: :nuts: :nuts:

kon tani mapadaku kag maupgrade ang pantalan sang dumangas kag ang tanan nga byahi pa iloilo via dumangas na dason ang mga dalan halin sa port pakadto iloilo via monfort boulevard ipang concrete.basi masiling ko nga pwede gid mangin city .damu ang products for export from dumangas like rice,sandiya,saging,monggo kag mga bangros halin sa kapunungan sang dumangas.:)
