Ilonggos get a taste of Indie films for free

ILOILO CITY, January 19 (PIA) – Ilonggos are given a free treat of purely Indie films as the red carpet is laid out today for 11 films through the first ever Indie film Festival here.

Atty. Dan Cartagena, an organizer of the 2011 Sining Pambansa Iloilo Film Festival said this event is realized through the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) under Usec Breccio O. Santos.

Cartagena said Santos is an advocate of the indie genre and would want to bring this to the grassroots.

Rowena Zulueta, FDCP coordinator for film festival projects, said the 11 films featured are “Lola”, “Sigwa”, “Red Shoes”, “Bakal Boys”, “Halaw”, “Himpapawid”, “Sampaguita”, “Yanggaw”, “Kano”, “Happy Land”, and “Emir”.

Zulueta said the films are shown for free at the Cinema 2 and 3 of SM City Iloilo starting January 19-23, as a way of awakening appreciation and interest of Ilonggos to embrace indie films in the region.

“Besides, these films have been recognized by international award bodies. The directors of all the films, script writers and some stars are here along with some dignitaries for the red carpet night,” Zulueta said.

She said Iloilo was chosen for the first notch of the showing of these Indie Films, to be followed by Baguio and Zamboanga.

Prof. Vinnie Tan, head of the UP Chancellor’s Committee for Culture and Arts, said this event is also given direction by the focus of the Aquino government in enriching the culture, arts and heritage of the Filipino, where the beauty of these can be exposed through films.

Tan said the film festival is intended to be the first step in bringing film development to the grassroots. (ESS/JCm-PIA6-Iloilo)

and i have been (somewhat) monitoring Roxas and Passi income in the past 3-4years..hindi sila masyadong nagkakalayo. Thinking that Roxas City has a port, an airport and 140,000+ population..I'm glad about my hometowns financial capabilities..though it's only 20%+ dependent on its own income..:)

being the transit point between iloilo city, roxas, kalibo contributes to its progress :banana:

Dinagyang food fest strictly for finest Ilonggo dishes

ILOILO City – The long stretch of Delgado St., Solis St., Valeria St. and Iznart St. in the City Proper here will be transformed into one huge banquet hall from 2 p.m. until 12 midnight for four days from January 20 to 23.

But participating restaurants during this four-day Dinagyang Food Festival should only serve the finest Ilonggo dishes, said Councilor Jason Gonzales who is a restaurateur himself.

Gonzales said this is in line with the city government’s promotion of Iloilo as a food destination.

Iloilo is famous for its La Paz batchoy, chicken inasal (barbeque) and biscocho, among other mouthwatering dishes and native delicacies.

"SOLD OUT" na kuno ang mga tickets kay ginpakyaw sang mag schools. tani next time more cinemas will be allotted or have a longer duration liek 5 days tapos they should allot tickets for walk-ins and have scheduled showings for students too

Talent crunch still biggest risk to robust BPO growth

MANILA, Philippines - Business process outsourcing (BPO) companies must address the annual loss of an estimated 84,800 workers from resignations or face a massive shortage of workers 5 years from now.

“We need to do that, or the industry will be short of 400,000 workers by 2016,” Maulik Parekh, president of BPO firm SPI Global Solutions Corp., said at a public forum on Jan. 19 morning in Makati City.

Business Processing Association of the Philippines chairman Alfredo Ayala said in a briefing last year that it would take zero investment on the part of the government “to attain the lower end of the target” $25-billion revenue by 2016.

But on Wednesday Parekh said with the exodus of 16% of the workers annually, that would bring the revenue to $18 billion. “That is not acceptable.”

Hence, Parekh said companies need to take 3 steps to address the situation:

* creating value for clients instead of cutting costs
* focusing on people in the company
* and fostering entrepreneurship

He said the shift by developed countries’ client companies from cost-cutting strategies happened even before the 2008 financial crisis and has been a predominant phenomenon for 3 years now. “The crisis probably accelerated that [shift].”

Still, Parekh said clients of BPOs may have also influenced the strategy to create value. “It’s a theme driven by clients, making it a net-net goal, which is to create more value with less cost by leveraging relationships.”

An example that Parekh cited is the move by a client company to move some work on medical transcription in the United States to the Philippines by putting up a health-care academy to prepare Filipino employees for high-value work.

The company also plans to put up a team focusing on transcription of highly technical materials, like those produced by scientists. “We have launched this in India and we plan to launch it here,” and added the team would produce products and services that would support “a far-changing landscape.”

How to support the kind of things that online sellers do or how to support devices that allow users to access information at the click of a finger—these are the ideas being discussed by that team, he said.

SPI Global is a wholly owned subsidiary of ePLDT Inc., whose ultimate parent is publicly listed Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) Co. According to its latest report to the Securities and Exchange Commission, SPiGlobal’s cash in bank was only P12,500 as of December 31, 2009. Parekh said the company aims to post a 14-percent to 15-percent growth this year.

He added the company has recently added 980 seats in their facility in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, which opened in October 2009 with 548 seats, and they aim to increase that to 1,800 seats. “As it is today, we’re the city’s largest employer.”

He said they also plan to expand in Iloilo City, where they started operations in March 2005. “Actually, the expansion has started. From 580 seats, we’re targeting to add between 20-percent and 25-percent capacity this year.” The company has 8 facilities, including the Dumaguete and Iloilo locations.

I just read the new guidelines of Dinagyang 2011. Satisfying (personally) however quite a bit late to implement, IMO.

I feel like there is a war brewing in Iloilo. That war between the traditionalist-conservatives and the liberals. Hmmm, if you've read Noli Me Tangere, it seems familiar no? And I think every society faces this kind of paradigm shift from time to time.

What?! You were denied?! Hay jusmio santisima! Their decision to implement the new guidelines this fast was already a faulty in their part! You couldn't just order batchoy, wait for it, paid and all of a sudden said, "sir, di na po available ang batchoy, pwedeng fried chicken na lang, magdagdag lang kayo ng P100 sir?!" :doh:

Hay, ambut na lang ni pag-abot ko sa Iloilo bwas! My name is also there since we were the ones who fought for recognition for bloggers as legitimate media partners back then.

Grabe ang fiasco subong sa media passes. For me, the photographer's pass for P500 is fine. It has been implemented in other festivals like Sinulog and MassKara. In the case of Sinulog, they have a separate media pass for legitimate media personnel (violet) and photographers/videos pass (gold). Obviously media are prioritized since they were the ones who have helped promote the festival. Photographers or even bloggers have to pay if they want some premium shots and also for the festival photo contest.

Who photographer would be interested in joining a contest that TV set is the top prize as compared to Sinulog's P50,000!

Daw natamaran na ako kon amu man ni kaginamo. Sila na gani guinabuligan, sila pa ang mag-resist and deny new ideas kag in turn mang-inaway pa!

So next time if you do not see Dinagyang in Living Asia, ABSCBN or Inquirer or any media entity, blame it to them! Kon lacking ang promotion, kay tungod the people behind publicity lacks the open-mindedness to promote it on a new scale! Don't blame DOT for their bias, since Lim ain't associated with any regional chuvaness.

After being part of this year's Dinagyang, I think my business with them will be over as well!

I left Iloilo for this reason: some people in our place resist change for the better--close-minded people who still adhere to the past and the traditions. I'll come back, earning degrees and respect, and soon they'll listen to me and the rest of our generation. The time has come to clang the bells and revolt against the conservative ideas that has kept Iloilo's progress hindered! I love Iloilo that I have given up some of my photos for free...to them and to the public, gave ideas--for free, everything for free!!! Gratis! Pero tienen miyerdas en tus trabajos. Porque de esto, no sé si voy a continuar ayudar Iloilo. Estoy cansado porque de algunas posturas de algunas personas en la ciudad y provincia de Iloílo! (Pa-Google Translate na lang palihug. BIR-Iloilo City 2010 collection up by 131%

ILOILO City -- Tax collection of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Revenue District Office 74 (RDO 74) here rose 131 percent from what it was in 2009.

RDO 74's tax collection last year reached P592.62 million, higher than its P256.14-million 2009 revenue haul.

RDO 74 Officer Nelia Demalata said the office also exceeded the P349.59-million collection target set by the BIR.

She attributed RDO 74's bullish 2010 performance to its active tax campaign and Oplan Kandado of BIR here. (PNA)

Government: Generally, ilonggo officials and bureaucracy are old fashioned, narrow minded, conservative to the point of hindering progress, resistant to change. Probably, an excetption to this is Jed Mabiliog, he's thinking out of the box solutions for our city.

Business: Generally, ilonggo business executives, business owners, entreprenuers and their partners seem to be the opposite of the above, are avant-garde and willing to take risks, even expand outside of iloilo.

Conclusion: Our business schools are doing their job.
Our schools which offer arts and sciences courses (pol. sci.,
history, psych, public administration, etc) including masteral
degrees are not up to par with the changes in governance (and
to think, UP-iloilo offers masters degrees in Pub Gov. and Pub
Ad).

What if waay na lang bi sang may ma cover sa dinagyang? No media, no bloggers, no photographers, no nothing para makita sang IDFI ang ila nga stupidity.

Festivals need promotion. Obviously, you cannot do that when you keep on denying media their place in the fesitivities.

Berns, you're right, some people in iloilo are still traditional minded, so conservative and resistant to change.

I couldn't avoid comparing the way Sinulog Foundation handled 1,800 photographers invited with a miniscule 500 photographers (and to be selected by IDFI pa!) of Dinagyang. Ila ya sponsor CANON, ok lang bayad P750 cada photographer, wala na screening kinahanglan--first come first serve basis! Kadugay na ini nga practice sang Sinulog samtang ang Dinagyang antiquated guihapon ang sistema. Ang irason sa isa da, KAY SINULOG IS LAIN SA DINAGYANG! :doh: I Know Right?! :bash:

Hay!!!! Daw mabukal dugo ko ah!

No wonder, a lot left Iloilo biskan anu pa pagpinalangga nila sa ila nga banwa! Kay may mga tawu dira, indi guid makabaton sang pag-cambiar sang tiempo! Females outnumber males in Iloilo City

ILOILO CITY, Jan. 20 (PIA) -- Are there more females than males in Iloilo City’s households? Yes, according to the regional office of the National Statistics Office here in Western Visayas.

NSO 6 Statistician Arlene Bagoning said the result of the 2007 Census of Population showed that in the 414,747 household population of Iloilo City, 213, 728 were females and 201,019 were males with a sex ratio of 94 males for every 100 females, same sex ratio in year 2000.

Bagoning cited the migration of women from the countryside to the city to look for jobs and better education as one of the factors why female outnumbered males in the city as indicated by statistics.

“There are more job opportunities for females in the city such as in households as service workers or in big department stores as salesclerks,” said Bagoning.

The census result further indicated that majority of these females, about 64.7 percent belonged to voting-age population. Also, the proportion of female voters (52.8 percent) to the total voting age population was higher than that of male voters (47.2 percent).

As of August 1, 2007, Iloilo City has posted a total population of 418, 710 persons. This registered an increase of 52, 319 persons over the total population of 366,391 persons in 2000 which resulted to an annual population growth rate of 1.86 person over the period.

Out of the city’s 180 barangays, Calumpang contributed the biggest share at 2.6 percent to the total population of Iloilo City followed by Brgy. San Juan at 2.3 percent and Balabago 2.0 percent. Brgy. Roxas Village is the least populated barangay at 0.03 percent share.

Bagoning said they are currently processing the result of the 2010 Census on Population and Housing conducted in May 2010. (LAF/JCM-PIA6-Iloilo)

It happened before, in 2009. Nga instead of having Dinagyang as the front page photo of the broadsheets, ang balita sang harrasment ang nasulat to instead.

Conclusion: Our business schools are doing their job.

degrees are not up to par with the changes in governance (and

Females outnumber males in Iloilo City

ILOILO CITY, Jan. 20 (PIA) -- Are there more females than males in Iloilo City’s households? Yes, according to the regional office of the National Statistics Office here in Western Visayas.

NSO 6 Statistician Arlene Bagoning said the result of the 2007 Census of Population showed that in the 414,747 household population of Iloilo City, 213, 728 were females and 201,019 were males with a sex ratio of 94 males for every 100 females, same sex ratio in year 2000.

Bagoning cited the migration of women from the countryside to the city to look for jobs and better education as one of the factors why female outnumbered males in the city as indicated by statistics.

“There are more job opportunities for females in the city such as in households as service workers or in big department stores as salesclerks,” said Bagoning.

The census result further indicated that majority of these females, about 64.7 percent belonged to voting-age population. Also, the proportion of female voters (52.8 percent) to the total voting age population was higher than that of male voters (47.2 percent).

As of August 1, 2007, Iloilo City has posted a total population of 418, 710 persons. This registered an increase of 52, 319 persons over the total population of 366,391 persons in 2000 which resulted to an annual population growth rate of 1.86 person over the period.

Out of the city’s 180 barangays, Calumpang contributed the biggest share at 2.6 percent to the total population of Iloilo City followed by Brgy. San Juan at 2.3 percent and Balabago 2.0 percent. Brgy. Roxas Village is the least populated barangay at 0.03 percent share.

Film producer eyes Iloilo as next movie location site

ILOILO CITY, Jan. 20 (PNA) -– Several independent movie producers who are currently in this city for the Sineng Pambansa Iloilo Film Festival on January 19 to 21 have expressed interest in doing their next films in the city and province of Iloilo.

One of them, Albert Almendralejo, producer of the highly acclaimed Bakal Boys, said he is interested to do a movie on the local Huasiong school, the Iloilo Central Commercial High School (ICCHS) located in downtown Iloilo City and recognized as the breeding ground of future basketball stars in the country.

ICCHS has produced several basketball luminaries, one of these is Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) most valuable player James Yap who had finished high school and spent his basketball training days at the downtown Fil- Chinese school.

“I am interested to know what makes this particular school tick and why it has produced basketball stars. With the movie, these questions will hopefully be answered,” Almendralejo said during a press conference with the local media.

Bakal Boys, Almendralejo’s indie movie directed by Ralston Jover, was made in 2009 and garnered several international awards.

These include Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival netpac award on July 17 to 26, 2009; Vancouver International Film Festival in Canada on October 1 to 16, 2009; Pusan International film Festival in Korea on October 8 to 16, 2009; Cinemanila International Film Festival on October 15 to 25, 2009; Thessaloniki International Film Festival in Greece on November 13 to 22, 2009; Torino International Film Festival in Italy on November 16 to 22, 2009.

It also won in the Stockholm International Film Festival in Sweden on November 18 to 29, 2009; Tallinn Black Nights International Film Festival in Estonia on November 27 to December 12, 2009; Asia House Film Festival in London on December 2 to 5, 2009; Palm Springs International Film Festival in the USA on January 5 to 18, 2010; CPH-PIX International Film Festival in Denmark on April 15 to 25, 2010; and at the San Francisco International Film Festival in the USA on May 20 to June 13, 2010.

A total of 11 participating films are never before shown in any commercial movie houses in the Philippines. These are featured in the first Iloilo Film Festival here sponsored by the city government, Film Development Council of the Philippines headed by Undersecretary Briccio Santos and SM City cinemas.

DBM approves P4-M budget for Iloilo City road widening

ILOILO CITY, Jan. 20 (PNA) – Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog here said that the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) recently approved the P4-million Special Allotment Release Order of Ilonggo Senator Franklin Drilon for a road widening project.

Mabilog said Senator Drilon disclosed that DBM has recently issued the Special Allotment Release Order for the project. He added that the senator included the project in his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF).

Mabilog said the amount will be used for the road widening along the entire stretch of Villa-Arevalo Boulevard.

It is noted that the Villa-Arevalo district is synonymous with seafood and people flock to the area during the Paraw Regatta Festival every February. But commuters lament that the roads are narrow and crowded, said the mayor.

He stressed that the road in this area needs to be widened and that Senator Drilon’s help will make this project a possibility. He added that the city government will immediately start the plans for the road widening project.

The city mayor said the amount is already a great help for the city by the senator, especially that the city treasury has limited budget for the entire service year. Likewise, the mayor said Sen. Drilon has various other projects ahead for the city. (PNA)

Drilon shells out P2M for Molo market rehab

ILOILO CITY, Jan. 20 (PNA) – A son of Molo district in this city has been allotted with P2 million for the rehabilitation of the public market and cultural center as his own way of showing concern to his people.

City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog announced that Senator Franklin M. Drilon informed him through a letter dated January 18 of the P2-million financial assistance through the senator’s priority development assistance fund (PDAF) chargeable against FY 2010 General Appropriations Act (GAA).

The financial assistance is embodied in the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) issued Special Allotment Release Order (SARO) No. A-01-09623 for the market rehabilitation project.

Mabilog said that he was happy but surprised with the senator’s immediate financial assistance considering that he had met and told the senator about the Molo market status only on January 17.

The Molo district has no more public market because the area was converted into a gymnasium. Mabilog said that there is still enough space beside the gym just behind the Molo police station which can be developed into a public market.

The city engineer’s office will have to draw up a market design and start the project immediately, the city mayor said. (PNA)

tani next time halinun na ang place for the dinagyang kay daw kagamay gid sang freedom grandstand for a thousand of spectators.hope the dinagyang foundation and local government has a plan for this .why not find a bigger venue and build a bigger grandstand for better viewing not only for the viewing public but in a television screen.because not only the local media are covering the events but national and international.

i hope next time a bigger venue for the dinagyang presentation area .daw kagamay na gid for a thousand of spectators.not only the local media but the national and internaional media are covering this big event.
hope the city government and the dinadyang foundation has a plan for this.

Na tsambahan man lang gani, kay daw nami man ang pag kaon sang Ocean City & ang ila tables da guid sa atubang. :lol: Damo pa gani bakante nga mga tables ugaling wala na mga chairs. :lol: :bash:

baw kung lapit lang ang iloilo, off ko tani subong asta saturday, tapos night pa sa sunday. 5 years ago pa ko last nag dinagyang. dumduman ko ginsulit ko gid to, puli 3am monday tapos 8am duty sa doctors. sa dason a, hopefully.

Asian Food Competition

ILOILO City -- To align its 2011 tourism program with the city, the Iloilo Convention & Visitors Bureau (ICVB) joins Dinagyang Festival 2011.

It is organizing the 1st Dinagyang Asian Food Competition on Ledesma St., between Valeria and Quezon streets.

Until January 23, the public will experience a new and exciting addition to the Dinagyang celebration. This food extravaganza, an event within the big event, begins at 6 p.m. until 2 a.m.

Sponsored by San Miguel Brewery, ICVB presents IIonggo food specialties as well as Asian delights.

San Miguel Beer adds to the excitement at the Asian Food Avenue on Ledesma St. with big-name music bands.

Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog will officially open the food competition to be participated by the many culinary schools in Iloilo City today.

Stars of GMA join Dinagyang

ILOILO City -- GMA stars troop to this city this weekend to join the Dinagyang Festival.
Starting tomorrow, the Kapuso contingent will be at the Ledesma Wing Carpark of Robinsons Place Iloilo for the Kapuso Fiesta Mall Show featuring Asia’s Songbird, Regine Velasquez together with the ultimate dramatic leading man, Dingdong Dantes.

Regine and Dingdong banners the upcoming GMA original romantic-comedy series, “I love You, Pare.”

“We are really very excited, ‘coz we have the lead stars of our upcoming major program coming in full force,” said Jocelyn Bautista, program manager of Entertainment TV for Regional ETV.

Tomorrow, January 22, it’s the cast of “Dwarfina” who will be in town for Kapuso activities.

No less than Dwarfina herself, Heart Evangelista, will lead the line-up of GMA Stars. Joining her are Dennis Trillo, Vaness Del Moral, and Will Devaughn. They will all be present for the Kapuso Fiesta Mall Show at the Event Centre of SM City Iloilo.

“Every year, we bring our artists in the regions as part of our commitment to bring superior entertainment and quality programs. And our Kapuso can only expect more pleasant surprises that GMA has prepared and planned for them this year, “ said Oliver Amoroso, assistant vice president for marketing and sales, RTV-IMS Regional.
