It turned out ... ang 200sq. m. (lot) gali is the amount of space City Hall is going to occupy in ROB, not the the area of the old site... ngekz

Squatters invade City Hall Lot

....Based on the design presented by Coscolluela, the new government center will fuse architectural designs of the Customs House along Muelle Loney Street, Masonic Temple across Plaza Libertad and the façade of the University of the Philippines-Iloilo City campus, which is the original Iloilo City municipal building....

...The city government is also negotiating with the management of Robinsons Place to use some 200 sq. m. of the mall’s third level as temporary city hall while the new building is being constructed at Plaza Libertad.

But instead of paying rent to Robinsons, Treñas proposed that they will pay the electricity bills only.

“We will know the response of Robinsons Wednesday next week,” the mayor said.

lol :D

Ngaa 200 sq. m. lang haw? Indi bala halos lahat na departments, masaylo? Pila ang employees na masaylo? One employee in a cubicle will occupy 3 sq. m. at least, and one employee with a table only will occupy at least 2 sq. m. already.

Ngek!!!!!! :eek2: Waahhh!!!! Amo na lang ka-gamay sang espasyo na i-okupar sang bug-os ka City Hall? Nge?! Are there any alternatives than Robinsons?

Quality and Identity Makeover for Iloilo’s Hablon

THE indigenous fabric formerly used for ceremonial occasions is taking a new form. Well, the one from Iloilo, at least.

For the province of Iloilo, hablon-weaving remains a cottage industry. The art of weaving is passed on from one generation to another. For some people in the municipalities of Miag-ao, Oton and some parts of Igbaras and Dueñas, loom-weaving is their source of livelihood.

Along with the government’s efforts to upgrade the quality of the handloom fabric is the call for a new image to distinguish it from all the rest.

Hablon is not just a provincial fabric. There are different varieties from the municipalities in Iloilo producing it. What is being done now is the upgraded fabric, with the help of internationally-recognized Ilonggo designers, PJ ARAÑADOR and NONO PALMOS, with noted local designers from the Designers Guild of Iloilo (DGI), ANGELETTE BORJA-RAGUS, ROMEO “BO” PARCON, DON PROTASIO, and JAKI ALCANTARA-PEÑALOSA, they are pushing for its own identity.

With existing products such as pillowcases, place mats, table runners, tote bags and wallet, the fabric is now popularly used for elegant evening gowns and even for stylish barongs.

For the past years, the Department of Trade and Industry with its partner-designer, International Lifestyle Designer, PJ ARAÑADOR, is aiming for a new scheme that was unfeasible in the past, given that our weavers, mostly from Miag-ao, and a number from Oton, Igbaras and Dueñas, depended on the inadequate supply of surplus materials. The trend now is this: weavers have color charts enabling them to provide fashion designers with swatches for their orders.

Quite a delicate material for designers, efforts are now being done to produce bigger and wider looms in contrast to its narrow width of 30 inches.

Although most of our weavers claim the lack of a bigger capital and better access to markets, with the identity makeover and full support on the part of local government agencies in Iloilo, hablon is now being pushed for widespread use such as incorporating these local fabrics in government uniforms as well as private institutions. Thanks to a memorandum from the Office of the President requiring all government agencies to use the local fabric for their office uniforms.

Producers with the talent and creativity of Ilonggo designers have been joining trade exhibits here and Manila, bridal fairs and fashion shows to promote it. This signals the return of the good old fabric and this time, an exclusive shop that breathes in classiness into the native look.

Just a short distance from the main entrance of Robinsons Mall Iloilo, an Ilonggo designer known for her innovative designs and keen fashion and business sense welcomes the return of genuine, beautifully hand-woven fabric. The shop JAKI PEÑALOSA keeps every item as fresh and flexible and has everything exquisitely cut out from hablon. Designs go bolder these days, with dramatic and theatrical pieces by combining rich colors of the fabric with embellishments of ethnic prints.

Hablon is, to few of us who know, more than just an indigenous fabric of Iloilo. The joy of seeing it transformed becomes a greater delight. We appreciate the efforts of our local weavers in preserving the craft and for remaining devoted to it; our local government agencies for continuously backing up trainings to upgrade and promote it; and the special touch of our Ilonggo designers in coming up with innovative fashion pieces.

And to those who believe in the beauty of hablon, in your patience and support lies its success and survival.

THE University of San Agustin, last July 15, launched two books from Augustinian authors.

The books are "Monografias de los Pueblos de la Isla de Pan-ay" written by Augustinian historian Fr. Policarpo Hernandez, O.S.A. and "Hiligaynon Mythological Stories Folktales: Analysis and Translation" written by Dr. Amorita C. Rabuco, which give emphasis on the culture and its significance in many perspectives.

"There had been a lot of graduates from this university that have brought honor and prestige not only in Panay but also to our country," Fr. Raul M. Marchan said.

"The book launching gives importance to a lot of perspectives especially in the lives of the residents of Panay. If we could look back in our history, it is in Panay where the pre-Spanish era set foot and initiated a way of life that has found its way to the present in many aspects. And Jaro, as one of the first cities established by the Spaniards," University Coordination Center for Research and Publications (UCRP) Director Jigger S. Latoza stressed.

According to Latoza, the books will set and bring forth a profound knowledge and cultural bonding. "Not only that, these will also promote our intellectual understanding. It also shows the consolidated effort on the preservation of our culture. This was envisioned by the Institute for Panayana and Cross-Cultural Studies (IPCS) as source and resource of knowledge and culture, subcultures and its resemblances in the other cultures."

"The IPCS shares its goal in promoting Panayana collections, through conducting research and studies pertaining to culture of Panay and its mixed cultures and also its preservation," he added.

According to Augustinian historian Fr. Policarpo Hernandez, we have to make Filipinos as Filipinos and the Philippines as a nation. He appreciates work like this and wishes the authors to continue their work without losing courage. And he leaves them with the message that "it is a difficult task but not an impossible work."

UCRP-Institute for Panayana and Cross-cultural Studies coordinator Fr. Antolin N. Asor on the other hand, added that the event brings significance in history, culture and lives of every Filipino.

"It is so important in its manifestation to other cultures in the country. This has also an important role in promoting Panayana culture, and UCRP is looking forward to the growth of this endeavor," he lamented.

The launching was witnessed by faculty and staff of the University of San Agustin, representatives from various learning institutions and family and friends of the authors.

Aussie allots P1.2B for MIGEDC projects
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/08/02/aussie.allots.p.1.2.b.for.migedc.projects.html
By Maricar M. Calubiran

The Australian Agency for International Development (USAID) has committed to release P1.2 billion or 30 million Australian dollars to the Metro-Iloilo Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC).

Mayor Jerry Treñas said the P1.2 billion will represent the Phase 2 of AusAID assistance to the MIGEDC. The AusAID has already released 2 million Australian dollars for the Phase 1 of the then Metro Iloilo Development Council (MIDC) project. The project covers technical assistance from the Australian government.

The MIDC was changed to MIGEDC upon the inclusion of the town of Sta. Barbara as per the instruction of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The MIDC is an alliance of the neighboring towns of the city such as Oton, Pavia, San Miguel and Leganes.

Treñas said the MIGEDC will serve as a venue for a comprehensive joint planning for economic, tourism, infrastructure, peace and order, traffic, social services and environment.

The new international airport will boost the local economy. He said the President wants the development from the town of Sta. Barbara to reach until the island-province of Guimaras, he said.

The President's vision of development is form part of her plans for the creation of super regions. A circumferential road will be constructed under the medium term development to distinguish the economic boom of the area.

^^ Amo na hambal sang mga profs ko. Di man tani kalulu-oy ang Museo kon me ara ta ya sang espasyo. Sa matuod lang, damu pa ta madeposito nga recuerdos sa sulod sang Museo. Kinahanglan guid na mag-ubra sang plano para sa Museo.

Iloilo City's planning to be a "museum city", lets start it now! :)

Why don't they renovate the old provincial capitol and make it as Museo Iloilo's extension? Mas manami pa ina and they're just adjacent from one another. It's a good way to liven up the city's bid for culture and history.

One of those places I miss in Iloilo. Kadamo sng collection sng museo ara lng sa stockroom nga indi ma display kay wala lugar. I used to hang out in their depository at the back. I hope they can find a way to address this and have them on exhibit permanently. It's a treasure trove in there... :)

maybe they can turn the former BJMP rehabilitation center as a museum. its more than a century old. the building itself is a heritage structure.

one of the best suggestions Oboi. Apart from the architectural old rehab building, the old capitol is another alternative site for Museo Iloilo's expansion (just in case). Mas mabaskog pa gid if they can expand some galleries and exhibition halls, and with space like the old rehab centre and the old capitol building, we will surely boost further our bid to become a museum city in the country.

Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus

In 1932, four nuns of the Congregacion de las Hijas de Jesus from Spain arrived in the Philippines. They were Sister Porta, Sister Maria Rey, Sr. Brigida Sagardey and Sr. Teresa Garcia.

It established its mother house in Pototan, Iloilo where it founded its first school, Colegio de la Immaculada Concepcion.

In 1936, they established a school in Iloilo City named Colegio de Santo Angel temporarily administered by these four nuns while waiting for six other nuns from Spain.

Shortly these six nuns arrived and took over the school administration. They were Sisters Saturnina Herrero, Patria Ortega, Eloisa Alonso, Angeles de Dios, Victoria Ruiz and Concepcion Tolosa.

The school opened with only three classes -- kindergarten, Grades I and II and was supported by Tanza parish priest, Mill Hill Missionary Fr. Lawrence Rogan and Bishop James McCloskey of Jaro.

During the war, the school was closed. It reopened after the war with the addition of a high school department. Its name was changed to Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus.

At present, this college is celebrating its diamond jubilee zealously committed to its noble aim of encouraging harmonious development of the potentialities of the youth to lead them into self-directing persons animated by Christ, capable of assuming responsibilities and collaborating in the building of Christian community.

This it does thru updated facilities, and laboratory equipment, and emphasizing personalized instruction.

I think they designed it to conform with the planned preservation of Calle Real as a heritage site.

Kun amo na ang design, daw ga-blend man sya sa existing heritage buildings in the vicinity.

Welcome to SSC, SamwiseGamgee, first and foremost. Tani mag-enjoy ka man di.

I believed the design was patterned to complement the old cultural and historical look of the city though sa aton nga mga modern-building lover iya, it's a farfetched one. Calinog is outstanding town in nutrition

In response to your post Chymera. Metro Iloilo Development Council will be renamed as:

Aussie allots P1.2B for MIGEDC projects

Trenas earns international movie stint
By Lory Ann B. Bilbao

A UNITED States movie producing company has put City Mayor Jerry Treñas in the limelight.

Treñas will be playing himself as a city mayor who signs a business permit for an Ilonggo who plays a part in the movie.

The scene was shot last week in the City Mayor's Office.

Though short, the scene depicted the Filipino culture, specifically that of the Ilonggos.

In the scene, he asks the applicant his purpose for securing the permit.

The mayor said it would somehow help promote the city not only in our lands but in other countries as well.

http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ilo/2006/08/01/news/trenas.earns.international.movie.stint.html

hihih. i've read this article before. Maayo pa si Trenas international star na. I forgot sang expected date of release nila sa America. Wow! Seems may ara kita iya nga lenguahe if this is indeed true nga most of the dubs will be in Ilonggo/Hiligaynon. Go Mayor Trenas!

The Int'l Airport will be operational na by April 2007. Actually both Iloilo and Silay Airports will be inaugurated by PGMA in 2 days.

The equipment will be operational by Dec 2006. and according to my friend who works at the New Iloilo Airport, they are now 75-80% complete. The terminal, runway, the flood pond, control tower and roads are already completed. Finishing works na lang inside the terminal bldg.

Few more months to go, Van. Dali na lang gid. Kung puwede nila i-open ang airport before Dinagyang, mas better pa gid siguro. Daw excited na ko sa new airport bal-an. Sta Barbara will surely be the new hub of business in Iloilo.

the amendment remains to be seen pa. The plan submission will be next week. I wish nga subong pa lang gina-amend na nila. Of course, Iloilo City will play pivotal role in Panay Island Development Authority. Iloilo Cisty still is the major drive for the island's economic, industrial and tourism boom. But mind you guys, the main thrust is to seel Boracay Island "more". Good for Boracay of course. Mas mahatagan siya importansiya, which I believe is a well-deserved one.

mas manami gid man tani kung ang opening will be January, a week before Dinagyang, preferably. Kagutok ang airport during Dinagyang. And the opening of the new airport will not only ease the city's traffic woes but could bring and accomodate extra flights coming in and out of Iloilo.

Sta Barbara? The town's progress will remain to be seen. Medyo clouded pa subong siguro until the airport will be operational. Kay right now, infras pa lang ang ginapaspassan nila. i wish to see Sta Barbara rise to its new heights, with Pavia and Oton, of course.

Hopefully, Tupas will move fast as well. Mahina siya kung mag dakuan pa sang ciudad ang income sang probinsiya sang Iloilo. The city is only 70 sq km. A very small portion sang province. Pero it looks like nga ang city could even surpass the province's income in due time. With the inclusion of MIDC members, mas madako pa gid ang kabi sang ciudad. Time for Tupas to move, too. Suggestions lang tani, he'll focus sa mga progressive towns to lure more investors to compete with the city. The likes of Passi City, Pototan and Calinog.

pareho gid ta siguro naobserbahan Mars. SM Delgado feels too crowded na gid man. Amidst sang ila reconstruction and expansion 2-3 years ago, daw kulang man gihapon. They really need bigger space. Ngaa indi sila magdugang floors haw? Make SM Delgado 4-5 storey para mas malapad ang ila space. They can't expand well horizontally kay wala na lugar dira. I saw in a newspaper saying "Angry Jerry". It's about having the city not being joined in the latest Panay tourism plan something. Heheh! I forgot the name of the newspaper. On the contrary, many local tabloids tells us of the bright future that we have, aside from politics...
and "the heat is on" for Panay Development Tourism Authority right now. Trenas, Defensor, Sarabia and Perez. Woweee! Seems Trenas is getting all into the in all aspects. All eyes for Iloilo City's Mayor Trenas. Big fuss from a very small problem. But there you go. Everybody has the right to give their opinion. Baskog gid man si Trenas ah. Go Mayor! Away ta tuod sini! mas maayo tani kon ibutang and city hall sa san pedro, molo. at least didto malapad and lugar. i think its 5 ha (correct me if im wrong) kag didto may lugar pa for expansion.

ang problema kis-a sa planning dira sa iloilo kay ang solusyon indi long term kundi short term lng. problema gid daan dira sa daan nga site ka city hall and parking and office space. unless they do a high rise with multilevel basement and podium parking, maginutok man da ghapon ang mga salakyan kag ang mga tawo. sa mga salakyan pa lng ka mga opisyal kag impleyado ka ciudad nagagutok na.

Right now its just the executive department thats currently occupying the area yet finding a parking space is hard for those doing transactions at the city hall. ang city council yara pa sa terminal market.

the land area is 1,900 sq meters? at six storey high gross floor area would be 11,400 a little over 1 ha. u have to deduct from that the hallways, stairs, rest rooms, stockrooms, utility rooms, etc. this is not enough considering all the different departments of the city government scattered all over the city. t paano ya after 5 years? will there be room for expansion for these offices too? ukon mangita naman ka lugar nga halinan sng iban nga mga departamento? a city hall should be a one-stop center for the citizens.

if its built at san pedro, molo they can do the construction by phase. they can start with the executive wing, then the legislative and so forth... look at the former site of the city hall (the current UPV iloilo city campus) coz that is one planned city center with a foresight had it not been donated for academic use. in molo, they dont need to put the various departments in one massive structure but in cluster of buildings with natural ventilation and lighting where pedestrian traffic are evenly distributed and plenty of greeneries around it.

city hall's current location is not inconvenient. mas accesible pa gani sa tanan ang sm city sa mandurriao :D. tan-awa bala ang traffic halin sa bonifacio drive pakadto sa iznart st. tapos pa j.m. basa adlaw-adlaw. unless u have a vehicle nga pwede kaw kaagi sa muelle loney pakadto sa city hall. yet they find it accessible...

the treñas administration should reconsider their decision...
pero ndi kuno accessible Oboi. I don't know kung ano buot silingon sang taga-city hall about accessibility. Pero mas maayo gid man tani kung ara sa Molo ang city hall kay sa pagkagutok na gid ang city proper. With all private businesses ans establishments in the province and region ara sa city proper, tani mabuhim-buhinan man diutay ang traffic if they decided to make Molo as the site of the new Iloilo City Hall. And besides, dako pa ang area of expansion nila sa Molo should they decide to expand offices in the future.

pareho gid ta siguro naobserbahan Mars. SM Delgado feels too crowded na gid man. Amidst sang ila reconstruction and expansion 2-3 years ago, daw kulang man gihapon. They really need bigger space. Ngaa indi sila magdugang floors haw? Make SM Delgado 4-5 storey para mas malapad ang ila space. They can't expand well horizontally kay wala na lugar dira. Though an extension is a welcome move, mas maayo pa gid nga they'll add floors. I'm sure damo gid ina dira mag-lease kay ara nga daan sa city proper.
Indi lang observation Kirby pero na-experience gid eh. Sa pagkagutok na gid man ang SM Delgado. I board ko imo suggestion to expand vertically whilst acquiring ICAG area for horizontal expansion as well. Bati ko gani sang una nga it will be a three storey building pero I don't know kung ngaa nangin duha na lang ka palapag ang SM Delgado. The area for business is really good and damo dira naga-shopping sa may Delgado area since most of the offices (government and NGOs) has a branch sa lugar nga ina. Though surrounded siya sang other malls within the area, Marymart and The Atrium, dako man gihapon ila market nga makuha.

the amendment remains to be seen pa. Mas mahatagan siya importansiya, which I believe is a well-deserved one.
this is becoming too controveral as said sa mga reports. I've been reading some newslnk earlier of Gov Perez reaction to Mayor Trenas. It simply shows how vital the city's role for the whole island of Panay. I've even read that Trenas wrote to Malacanang already regarding the city's exclusion to the revival of Panay Development Authority. I guess the proposal and consultation is way too early for him to react yet it is just appropriate lang siguro that as early as now, naghambal na si Trenas about his stance for the PDA. It's assertion and I guess Gov Perez is not used to it lang siguro.

With Boracay, well, selling point na gid man ina siya sang Aklan, Panay and Western Visayas. I don't think there's any place in the region that comes closer to Boracay at this point in time when it comes to tourism. It's still luring a lot of foreign and local tourists amidst some negative issues concerning the island. It could even gross billions of pesos in receipts due to its tourism.

Hulat lang ta siguro next week kay may ara gid ina nga follow up issues.

Yep. Included na ang St Barbie and Guamaras Mars. Making it the new powerhouse of the region in terms of economics and tourism. This new corridor will surely boost Western Visayas economic renaissance. Ti, welcome to the new MIDC members lang. Hala Bira!

Lipay man ko Kirbs. It's a massive expansion especially ang inclusion sang island-province of Guimaras. Wala lang ta kabalo sang main role sang Guimaras apart from tourism. The area for development in Guimaras is so vast and the potential at present is endless. Guimaras province to merge with the present Metro Iloilo and Sta Barbara is a big boost for conurbation economic growth. Lot of areas remains untapped and still subject for development and planning. Nami siguro kung mag-release man si Gov Nava sang iya plan or of its province contribution for the MIDC or MIGEDC. Actually, wala ta gani kabalo sang infras development sa Guimaras subong cos very few articles lang ang gina-cover about Guimaras. Pero, the council is very promising, and with support coming from our international counterparts, the new MIDC/MIGEDC will be a great success.

Daw well-supported man sang mga pulitiko ang coal plant/s nga ini. We'll see what the outcome will be na lang. Neeedless to say, we need more power investors in Iloilo.

this coal-fired power plant is another controversial matter arising in the province. Residents and politicians there delved so much with the planned construction of the plant and nalipatan ta na ang PECO sa Iloilo City. Til now, PECO is still the sole distributor of electricity in Iloilo City. It's far cry that tabloids are raring to take opinions, etc about the coal-plant and silence the issue of PECO. I guess we need to resolve the PECO monopoly first, and this coal plant is just a mere impediment.

Hello everyone! I haven't posted for quite a while. Just lurkin' around... I have a handful of photos I wish I could post but this computer I'm using is just too slow to upload them. Anyway, great news here. I've been and still am busy with a lot of stuff.

Many many threads ago, someone suggested that we produce new postcards for the promotion of Iloilo. Whoever that was, thanks for the idea.:) I made a series of postcards but only for UPV at this time. You can visit the Art Gallery at the Former Iloilo City Hall to check them out (for sale). I also made a few designs for Iloilo City and one for Miagao but I'm not ready to mass-produce them yet. I'll see if I can manage to post some designs here.

About the SSC meet, pwede maki-join? Hehehe... I'll see if I can find time... The shirt idea sounds cool too...

About the new City Hall plans, it seems like they change their minds too often. They initially chose SM City because it was "accessible", now they say Robinsons is more accessible. Well, why don't you build it at Molo? We have outlined its advantages over the Plaza Libertad site many times. I don't think we should rush the building of the City Hall "of the Future". We don't need to hurry to catch up with the elections. It must be built for the future and not just for today. The new City Hall must be built with foresight. It must be something we can be proud of for the next millenia. Iloilo City is, after all, the "Next Big Thing", isn't it?

I totally agree....
Like what I've posted previously, the city hall must be properly planned with foresight not hindsight. I think our government should stop using the tag "...of the Future" since I don't see any of their projects justifiable by or worthy of such tag. There's nothing so futuristic with regards to their planning and function. Can't see any innovations in their works. It's such a lame tag to hype-up their projects.

They want to start it as soon as possible before the "90-day ban" comes into effect means only one thing - VOTES!!! :speech:

Caloy and IAMME, welcome back. Sako gid tanan siguro sa Ilonggo thread kay talagsa na lang naga-post.

IAMME, you're right to say that we don't need to rush things for the new city hall of iloilo. Tani lang gin-consider nila ang advantage sang Molo site compare sa present sa Plaza Libertad. And hope the design will complement with the Iloilo City's modern-heritage aura para mas may impact. Though the present design looks a little bit blurry and not apt to the standards, basi man lang pagnatpos mas maayo iya guwa.

Caloy:
Think Iloilo Supermart is starting to consider building mini-malls rather than a plain supermarket lang like the first one they have in Jaro, nga hasta subong plain supermarket area lang siya. The two new Iloilo Supermarts (Molo and Mandurriao) have a concept of a one-stop, which I believe mas maayo ay sometimes, other than grocery gusto mo magkaon-kaon or mag-shop. I just wish Iloilo Supermart will build bigger mall/s in Iloilo to compete with SM and Robinsons. At present, The Atirum and MaryMart Mall pa lang ang ara. Mas maayo pa gid kung mag-build sila supercenter outside city proper.

tama ka gid dira migs. Basi gid man blinded kita sang mga prejudices kay wala pa gani sang proper consultation, ga-waswas na ang media and mga anti sa proposed plant. Since we are giving the anti-coal supporters to say their side, mas maayo man siguro kung ang mga proponent sining proyekto will be entitled for hearing man. Karon biased na to ang opinion sang taho. Remember, media plays a big role in information dissemination.

Sa diin gid man nila plan ipatindog ang coal plant haw? Barotac Viejo, Concepcion or Carles? Ara tanan sa 5th distrct sang probinsiya ba.

And speaking of energy sector, nadula na naman ang issue sang PECO. It's on and off thing sa Iloilo. dapat may follow-up ini. And people behind sang PECO monopoly should be known sa mga Ilonggos para kung magpadalagan sila public office, we know sang ila stance.

It would be kung may mga follow-up articles about this issue. With Trenas blowing on top of this matter, shocked gid si Perez and defensor. Even sarabia siguro wala nag-expect sang reaction ni Mayor Trenas.

On the other hand, I hope ma-ush through ang Panay Development Authority (PDA) revival kay vital ini sang development sang Panay Island, Guimaras and Boracay. Thpugh mostly ang focus will be on tourism, pero all gove't agencies will be affected sini siguro especially the DPWH for more infras.

About SM delgado's expansion, hearsay pa man lang siguro kay wala pa man expansion nga nagakatabo subong though we've heard a lot that it will be expanded to accomodate more stalls or increase the space of the SM department store. Same as SM Jaro's expansion and SM City's fiesta strip. I don't have a tangible source regarding sa plan expansion sang mga SM stores in Iloilo City. Suffice to say nga mas maayo gid tani kung may ara website ang SM stores in Iloilo to highlight sang ila program.

Sa market size naman sang SM Delgado in comparison sang SM City, mas advantageous siguro ang delgado coz damo gid man dira offices iya sa city proper. And mostly after offcice hours, ang mga empleyado gusto manmaglaga-lagaw sa ciudad and most if not all, they prefer to do their shopping sa nearest SM. SM Delgado is a mini-mall but commands a bigger share of market in Iloilo kay sa SM City naman iya, mostly ang mga shoppers are students or those coming from towns of Iloilo.

Seems they are all regrouping themsleves to enhance sang promotion and development sang tagsa ka-area. of course, maayo ini nga indikasyon since indi lang isa ang nagahulag. Though Panay is such a big island, well-subdivded siya, and with some of its part ara pa sa poverty line, dapat mas tutukan nila ini. Antique for once should start forming its alliance with Iloilo or aklan like what Guimaras is doing para mas mapabaskog nila ang trading and exchange of resources. Mas ma-improve na gid ang pangabuhi sang Panaynons if people from remote areas will be given a chance to participate sang developments. Ano ayhan ang mangin effect sang PDA towards Antique's development? Will San Jose increase its IRA and somehow manage to bid for cityhood in few years time. There was once an article about the move of making all capitals as a city, which i believe is maayo gid. Though kadako sang Panay, there's only 3 cities exisitng sa island making it well deregulated. We have more space for future cities pa siguro and I'm just wondering why until now, Kalibo is not applying for cityhood amidst its income is way much better from other cities in the region. Another thing pa sa PDA nga ini. Will it only focus sa tourism aspect or other areas pa gid. Tani mabasa ta draft niya no para may diskusyonan man ta di.

Guimaras is a big asset for Iloilo City and the MIDC. In as much as Iloilo City is developing by leap, we need Guimaras Island to shelter some of its structure. The tourism potential is so huge since it's very proximal to Iloilo City waters. A good combination of the busiest metro lifestyle and the convenient luxury of beaches. Besides, there's a direct exchange of goods between the two provinces. Remember, too, that Guimaras protects Iloilo City's harbours, which til the present is vital to our trade within the country and other foreign lands. Thoughthe role of Guimaras to the new MIDC is quite vague (except for tourism), I believe nga dako ang mabulig sang bag-o nga proposals sini. daw wala pa man nagapaguwa si Gov nava sang iya proposals, etc for the Guimaras inclusion in MIDC/MIGEDC or the Regional City of Iloilo. Btw, how about Sta Barbara pa? If the new MIDC includes Sta Barbara and the whole province of Guimaras, ano ayhan ang makuha ta sa bag-o nga stats sini? :)

here's an update from the erring energy supply for Iloilo's Provincial Capitol:

Prov’l Capitol certain to source power from NPC
By GEROME DALIPE IV

ILOILO – The provincial government is moving heaven and earth to source its electricity needs direct from the National Power Corporation (NPC) through the Negros-Panay grid.

Atty. Salvador Cabaluna, Provincial Legal Office chief, said he and other capitol officials recently attended a hearing for this at the ERC central office in Manila.

The Panay Electric Company (PECO) opposes capitol’s plan.

Cabaluna said the capitol is “50 percent” sure that the ERC would grant its petition to directly purchase power from NPC.

Foreseeing huge savings, the capitol had been pushing for the operation of its P13-million power substation. It plans to source power for the substation from NPC via the Philippine Foremost Milling Company located at the back of the capitol building.

Philippine Foremost has been granted permit by ERC to directly get power from NPC.

The plan is for the capitol to make use of Philippine Foremost’s transmission line connected to NPC.

The Iloilo provincial government cited the reliability and lower rates being offered by the NPC.

PECO argued that the NPC charter, which allows direct connection, has been modified by the provision of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) and its implementing rules and regulation.

It said that while the EPIRA provides an open access and retail competition, the direct connection or sale of electricity in bulk is not synonymous with an open access and retail competition.

Cabaluna said the next hearing is on August 10.

any follow about this council or group's plan?

Biz groups form economic development foundation
By Eireen Manikan

VARIOUS business organizations here formed an organization aimed at promoting the tourism and economic interests of the city.

Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said the organization, called the Iloilo Economic Development Foundation (IEDF), held a well-attended first meeting last July 18th, which was highlighted by the election of its officers.

The elected foundation officers were Alfonso Uy of La Filipina Uygongco, chairman; businessman Rex Drilon, president; Antonio Jon of the Iloilo Business Club, vice-president; businesswoman Fanny Uy from the Iloilo Multi-Sectoral business organization, treasurer; and Valerie Maravilla of the Iloilo Producer's Association, secretary.

Those who pledged support for the fledgling foundation were mostly presidents of the city's various business organizations like Felipe Uygongco, Henry Chusuey, Angel de Leon, Lee Chuan, Jose Marie Chan and Nards Lim.

Treñas said that to support the foundation and its goals, the city and provincial governments pledged P1 million each to ensure that projects lined up by the foundation will be implemented smoothly.

The mayor stated that the primary role of the local government is to be the catalyst of this group and to continually support whatever undertakings they may wish to have for the further development of the city.

During the meeting, Taytay sa Kauswagan president Angel de Leon donated P200,000, while Rex Drilon and Treñas gave P50,000 and P10,000 respectively to form part of the start-up capital of the group.

"I am very happy with all of the businessmen's tremendous support for IEDF. This foundation will certainly bring all sectors together and produce a synergism to realize all developmental efforts," Treñas said.

The mayor also added that the foundation's membership is open to anyone interested in helping boost the city's economic growth.

that i agree Kirby. Guimaras is definitely a big force for Metro Iloilo Development Council and so with the rest of the towns included. Medyo hulat-hulat lang ta sang further plans nila on where they want to take this council. But they're expanding. And it's a good thing for sure.

awaiting further controversies na lang .. he he. Kadmo subong nagagululuwa nga authorities, councils, etc for Iloilo, Panay and the region lang. Tani mabasa ta draft niya no para may diskusyonan man ta di.
it'll be a long way to go pa for this project to take off kung may ara gid man. Bal-an mo naman sa aton kung ano kadugay pag-abot sa proyekto. Good planning pero ang implementation sa pagka-hinay.

Regarding sa Antique, I think focus sila sa ila road networking, comunications, etc subong. Thinking of upgrading and improving siguro. Potentially, okay man ang San Jose but they lack selling point. Tani more investors will look at antique's potentials considering nga tourism and natural resouces madamo sila. Another untapped market in Panay island.

Iloilo City is, after all, the "Next Big Thing", isn't it?

good one IAMME. You're right to say gid that after all, Iloilo City is the Next Big Thing. Big things happening around the city, negative and positive siguro. simply as controversial as ever.

Anyway, stop lurking and join us with our discussions diri para sadya naman ah. I'm learning a lot sa forum. Bal-an mo man nga iba man kung sa malayo ka.You longed for more updates back home though indi mo man makita.

I hope the city will be constructed soon, and as planned, to beat the 90-day period before election para indi mag-delay. The present city hall at presnet looks awful and dilapidated. Time for a change na gid siguro.

Dali lang. Diin na nila ginsaylo ang ICAG Office or HQ? Abi kung sin-o may update, please post it here.

About sa ICAG, mamangkot ta sa mga kasimanwas ta nga ara subong sa Iloilo.

Anyway, wait and see naman ang hampang naton about sa SM delgado expansions.

The Guardian Iloilo and The NewsToday are the best sources gid. Especially ang The Guardian kay it tackles most businesses and tourisms activities sa aton ciudad. Sometimes budlay lang mag-access kay off ang Guardian link from midnight, philippines' time.Sa TNT naman is medyo late na kay tri-weekl man lang ang ila updates.

I'll keep checking sang mga papers nga ini from time to time ah. The Guardian Iloilo is quitely updated compare sa news Today. More news gid man sa PDA.

:speech:

one thing for sure. Everything is transferrable by votes. Oboi, basi amo ina ang thread sa aton. May ara lakip nga tagline all the time. Puro lang .. of the future. well, future it is.

Ako man ma-welcome man, three times pa.

It's not funny at all, mars and caloy. Do you think, I'm funny? You must be joking, mates! (ara gin-quote ko ina sa British movie nga ginatan-aw ko subong). It's ridiculous! ........................... har har, pwede na. Man ma-compete ako kay Trenas sa iya acting. International star na siya nga daan. Ang budlay lang to bala kung ginpakita pa nila sa film ang old city hall sang Iloilo. Yuckkksss ... that definitely is ain't funny. Btw, ain't is very american.
you really made my day Space. Ano natabo man? Pati si Trenas kumpetensiyahan mo pa. Sabagay damo naman actors nga pulitiko ah. And yes, tani indi lang ipakita ang old city hall. It's gruesome. Kinahanglan na gid man islan ina. Amo man siguro gihapon ang design nila ah. Tani they'll move out of the old city hall as soon as para maumpisahan na obra ang new city hall.

that i agree Kirby. Guimaras is definitely a big force for Metro Iloilo Development Council and so with the rest of the towns included. Medyo hulat-hulat lang ta sang further plans nila on where they want to take this council. But they're expanding. And it's a good thing for sure.

Tani damo tourism proposals for Guimaras. The market is so huge. Kay even dira pa lang gani sa region ta and neighbouring regions, wala pa nila makilala ang Guimaras. One way to do it is by distributing leaflets or ads sa newspaper. Daw wala man sila tourism council subong dira or any group nga naga-promote Guimaras. Just likesa Boracay kay may ma foundation sila to help with the promotion. More way to go pa for Guimaras and they need a very aggressive promotion to keep tourism moving sa Guimaras. Besides, wala pa dalagku-an nga hotels sa Guimaras to cater guests, visitors and foreigners. Mas amo ini siguro tutukan nila andthe same way as tightening sang security all over the island-province.

May balita kamo kung ano natabo sa feeder airport sang Guimaras? Whether functioning pa siya or wala na?

Ako man ma-welcome man, three times pa.

Daw sa iloilo Supermart naman focus sang diskusyon ta di haw? Ako iya, wish ko gid makapatindog sang mall ang Iloilo Supermart sa Pavia or Sta Barbara para lapit lang. Ahay, san-o pa ayhan?

Good idea gid man Space. Expansion outside the city area. Leganes and Pavia, I think is very much ready na sa amo ni nga development. Even passi City will be a good site for more expansions. Sta Barbara, too, isvery promising kay accdg kay Whyte or whoever is from Sta Brabara may mga residential communities naman subong nga ginapatindog didto. But ofcourse, it's all up to IloiloSupermart kay gina-tan-aw man ina nila ang market kung maka-break even sila or may profit. Kay kung wala man ang, I'm sure target expansion will always be the city of Iloilo.

Any more developments business-wise. Ang infra lang abi ang focus sang The Guardian lately eh. Very little significance ang ginahatag sa mga new businesses nga naga-sululod sa Iloilo, both in the city and province.

Medyo clouded pa naman Mars though ang affected is people working in NHS. Bay-i lang kay i-printahan ta ka sang detalye. But like Caloy said, special areas are still open and mas madasig ang processing. They still need more coz they're opening more wards pa man. Subong lang tighten up ang tanan. But in couple of months time, I'm sure balik na naman sa dati ang ila panginanglan. Saylo ka lang di sa amon para mas masadya pa gid. wala man sa panlait pero daw maayo ang Iloilo Supermart Mandurriao compare sa Jaro nad sa Molo haw? Daw mas may dating siya. Problema lang it's causing more traffic in Mandurraio especially sa area sang Western Visayas Medical Center and Mirasol Nat'l Comprehensive Hgh School.
Traffic na gid man ang area nga ina dira. Puno na da building occupied mostly by Pharmacies, Carinderia, Laboratories. Mas maayo pa gid tani kung may ara stand alone Jollibee or McDo sa area nga ina no? Or ang aton Mang Inasal or JD ah. mas okay pa gid siguro. Wala dira maayo nga kalan-an and malayo pa ang SM City. isa pa ang mga Pharma dira are mostly 24/7 naman. Btw, wala plan expansion ang WVMC? That's the only tertiary hosp in the region under DOH. oh i know and I'm not bothered at all, Kirbs. Gusto ko lang magsaylo sa NHS where I can have my two months paid leave a year and all the benefits there is. It's very tempting compare sa ginaobrahan ko subong where we're allowed 5 weeks paid leave lang per taxable year. But hey, I'm enjoying here with my fellow friends. Pero bal-an mo naman nga manong and i have plans so I''ll be more pressured to join him in London in next two years. Though may offer sa Oxford subong but I still see myself in London. Mas easier sa amon bal-an. And I guess you know that, too. ITU will be the best place siguro. A year or two and hopefully, I'll be joining the NHS UK. Cheerio!

any follow about this council or group's plan?

Value sang pound is much, much better. Actually, nagnubo man siya gani. The best part was in 1994 I guess when it even reach a 110 peso per pound or 2 dollar a pound. WV has 30T OFWs

About 30,000 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) from Western Visayas have been recorded by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) regional office.

This was revealed by OWWA Regional Director Robert Bassig during a media briefing here initiated by the Commission on Filipino Overseas (CFO) in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Capiz provincial government.

“Majority are seafarers,” said Bassig.

Presently, the government’s crisis officials are in the thick of the action to get beleaguered Filipinos out of Lebanon and many OFWs have already been seen streaming home to the embrace of their families in the Philippines.

President Arroyo has ordered the pull out of all Filipinos from Lebanon amidst the continuing Israeli air and ground attacks which resulted in the earlier exodus of other nationals from the war-torn country. (PIA/A.Lumaque)

Here's some updates for the proposed coal power plants in Iloilo:

Concepcion folks endorse DMCI coal plant

CONCEPCION, Iloilo – Mayor Raul Banias said the proposed 100-MW coal-fired plant to be put up in a 600-hectare land in Sitio. Puntales, Barangay Nipa here by the DMCI has gained “social acceptance”.

This after majority of the more than 1,000 residents of Sto. Puntales and neighboring barangays favored the project during a public hearing Friday.

DMCI started making plans for the coal plan in August 2004.

Banias explained only a small number of Concepcion residents oppose to the plan – citing health and environmental hazards.

“After a thorough study and evaluation, I myself strongly endorse the project. Among my constituents, 83 percent favor it which is more than the 50 percent requirement for a project to push through,” Banias said in an interview.

Of Concepcion’s 25 barangays, 23 support the coal plant.

The identified host barangay which is about 4.5 km from the town proper has 202 households consisting of 1,058 individuals who are dependent on fishing and farming for livelihood.

The mayor added that “the overwhelming support came from the multi-sectoral groups”.

These sectors include the disabled, women, fisher folks, senior citizens, daycare workers, jeepney drivers as well as the Aglipay and Baptist religious sects.

Banias said the local Catholic church did not make a stand on the issue.

I'm bit nosy pero what do you mean by changes in regulation? Sa IND? I'm kinda lost with the issue lately. But I'm sure EEA will have a full access with the British market whatsoever considering that they are EU members.
I've got it all Space. UK now is eyeing to go digital by 2010 or 2012 so wala na ina problema. And yes, I kept on watching it kay diri man ang original sina nga program. And about sa IND, things changed from time to time so hulat-hulat lang diutay. I'm taking advise from my bro and I'm not really worried at all kay I'm preparing for one thing naman, just in case. I'm all set and ready, if the need arises. Hihihi. Definitely, may ara na ako prospects.

Tupas makes fresh pitch for coal plant to propel economy

ILOILO Governor Niel D. Tupas Sr. said a coal-fired power plant in the province is the best solution to Panay’s power crisis.

Justifying the plant as a necessary element to spur for development in the countrysides, Tupas once again renewed calls to investors to invest in the local power industry.

Tupas’s fresh calls for a coal-fired power plant was made Friday during the public hearing on the proposed 100-MW coal plant by DMCI Holdings to be put up in a 600-hectare land in Sto. Puntales, Brgy. Nipa which is about 4.5 km from the town proper of Concepcion.

Majority of the more than 1,000 residents of Sto. Puntales and neighboring barangays who attended the consultation expressed support for the project.

The hearing, which was part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the project, was conducted by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB-6). Its results will be reviewed by the EMB’s review committee.

The EIA aims to determine whether or not an Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) be awarded to DMCI to start the project.

The provincial, municipal and barangay governments have already given their nods to the plan.

Tupas pushed for the project citing the need to address the forecast power shortage by 2010. He explained this shortage was confirmed by officials of the Department of Energy (DOE), National Power Corporation (NPC) and National Transmission Corporation, (Transco).

“Whom should we believe the experts or the other side?” Tupas said referring to the oppositors who claimed there is no power shortage in the island, thus there is no need for a coal plant.

Tupas explained that Iloilo is only relying on power being supplied through the Cebu-Negros-Panay (CNP) grid whose main source is the geothermal plant in Leyte. He said that since Panay is at the tail end of the grid, Panay suffers the most every time something problematic occurs in the grid in Cebu and Negros.

Oppositors, however, countered that the 110-MW Napocor diesel plant in Dingle should be tapped for the island’s power needs but Tupas said the plant only generates about 30-MW, thus Iloilo has no reliable power source.

“If not coal plant, what other alternatives do we have? Wind power is very expensive and there is no investor willing to come. The hydropower potential of the province particularly in Calinog was also assessed by an Australian firm but it would cost around P10 billion to be completed in 10 years,” Tupas said.

“The United States and Hong Kong have coal plants right in the heart of the urban centers, so why not in Iloilo?” he added, allaying concerns on environmental and health hazards raised by the oppositors.

There you go. More positive news for the new coal-fired power plants in Concepcion. In due time, another one will be erected pa in Btc Viejo. Ina lang gid ini siguro ang DMCI.

And ano ini ang ginahambal nila nga Calinog Hydropower by Australian company? Naumpisahan na ini ayhan? Ten years is way too long. In between sina damo pa kita kinahanglan.

The best read I have few days ago is the article here regarding Provincial Capitol sourcing out energy from FMC rather than PECO. And dapat the provincial government should help the city in sourcing out their electricity needs to other providers and open the energy market of the city and province of Iloilo. PECO's monopoly as said earlier really sucks and those people behind it will be condemned gid.

parasite gid man ina ang PECO sa mga Ilonggo residents. They're eating up all our money, and their service is really awful. Mahal na ang kuryente, at times may brownout pa. And maisog pa to further increase power rate. Ay inano na lang ang PECO man?

Iloilo is a province of the Philippines located in the Western Visayas region. Its capital is Iloilo City and is located at the southeast portion of Panay island, bordering Antique to the west and Capiz to the north. Just off Iloilo's southeast coast is the island-province of Guimaras and across Panay Gulf and Guimaras Strait is Negros Occidental.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/chymera00/iloilocitypics/IloiloLocation.jpg

Located 238 statute miles from Manila, Iloilo is the gateway of the Western Visayas Region. The province comprises the southeastern part of Panay Island. Iloilo is 55 minutes by plane from Manila. Should you opt to go by sea, Sulpicio Lines, Negros Navigation and Aboitiz have ships plying from Manila (19 hours).

Natural boundaries, such as mountain ranges with peaks as high as 7,000 ft., lie between Iloilo and Antique on the west and Capiz on the north. Mainland Iloilo is composed of plain interspersed with upland portions. The capital, Iloilo City, rests between the Iloilo and Batino rivers which from the angle of a nose. This location is the root of the province's old name, ilong-ilong which means "noselike".

Iloilo province, and its beautiful city, ranks as one of the country's foremost centers of culture, industry and trade. Located on the southwestern tip of Panay Island between the Iloilo River and the Guimara Strait, its attributes as the repository of architectural and artistic legacies, as the promising point of progress in aquaculture, and as a trove of unexplored tourist attractions give it an allure so bewitching as not to be missed.

Iloilo is the cradle of early Philippine civilization. The telltale marks of such cultural influences live on in the century-old houses, the period churches, the colorful festivals, and in the enterprising bloodline of its people. Iloilo has a glorious past as the land's great sugarbowl and the locale of the haciendas of the old rich - whose scions and daughters turned down the centuries into the dons and donas of powerful economic dynasties.

http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/3423/1224/400/Jaro%202.jpg

Some of the testimonies to this awesome heritage are the churches. Nowhere else can church tours prove so rewarding. The Miag-ao Fortress Church is a grand example of a medieval bastion church with onrnate floral designs on the facade; another colossal monument is the San Joaquin Church and cemetery known for its bas relief featuring the Castilian and Moorish wars, while its cemetery is picturesque for its hexagonal chapel with rose windows and twin-tiered balustrades that lead to its entrance; meanwhile, three staircases lead to the historic rock; whereas the Rennaissance - inspired Molo Church and orphanage, the Asilo de Molo, are unique for their architecture as well as for a rare product, hand-embroidered barong Pilipino in pina cloth; the Pavia Church is a red brick and coral windows cases and rightfully deserves a place in one's travelogue. These churches are no farther than two hours' distance from each other.

Iloilo province is primarily the commercial and trade center of Western Visayas, with commercial, industrial development and rural banks, financial and investment houses, insurance companies, and realestate agencies and developers. Nevertheless, agriculture is the province's main source of livelihood. In fact, Iloilo's production of rice, sugar and mango has made it one of the country's top agricultural producers.

The city's population represents a big manpower pool and a growing consumer market. Purchasing power is generally high given the favorable income distribution in Iloilo. Assuring the business sector of a steady supply of multi-skilled manpower are the city's 30 tertiary schools and 6 universities.

Iloilo's is a byword for its famous festival - the Dinagyang, a local mardigras. Held every January in honor of the Infant Jesus, the festival is a major tourist attraction.

Another even Iloilo is known for is the Paraw Regatta. Which is participated in by local and foreign sportsmen.

New Iloilo airport to boost Panay tourism

ECONOMIC Planning secretary Romulo Neri said the P6.2-billion new Iloilo airport which is nearing completion in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo will boost the tourism industry in Panay Island.

Neri, who is also the director general of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda), was here last week together with Presidential Chief of Staff Mike Defensor to grace the awarding rites of the Regional Development Council’s (RDC-6) search for best public sector projects.

Neri said the national government has lined up several plans geared toward tourism promotions even as the ambitious mega-region program of President Gloria Arroyo has positioned Panay as among the tourism hubs in Central Philippines.

“There are excited prospects for the new Iloilo airport as we are bullish on Panay tourism,” Neri told reporters.

Neri explained that among government plans to improve the economy is the adoption of the “open skies” policy for the newly-built airport in Iloilo, just like the scheme being implemented in Clark.

Neri said the new airport will serve as “tourism magnet” and the country is expecting about 1.5 million visitors yearly. He added that around 50,000 tourists are coming from China alone.

The region’s tourism industry has been anchored on the world-famous Boracay Island which was visited by almost half a million tourists last year.

The new Iloilo airport which is expected to operate next year is considered as gateway to Boracay and other local tourist spots in the region. Iloilo, being the host of the airport, stands to benefit from the influx of tourists visiting the region.

In a related tourism-focused campaign, Ben Jimena, executive assistant to City Mayor Jerry Treñas, said that Iloilo will hold the Western Visayas Tourism Assembly (WVTA) October 26 - 29.

Jimena said the event, which aims to promote the tourism potentials of the region, will showcase travel exhibits, festivals parade, cultural presentations and destination booths.

“We are expecting greater cooperation among stakeholders, a grander celebration and more visitors to come over,” Jimena stressed.

Study grants for City Hall employees

City Hall employees who are unable to take up advanced studies due to financial constraints can now pursue their dreams of earning a Masters degree thru a special scholarship fund created jointly by Iloilo City Congressman Raul Gonzalez Jr. and Mayor Jerry Treñas. Under the said program, qualified applicants will be taking up the “Masters in Public Management” program of the Ateneo School of Government in Rockwell, Makati. The two-year course has been specially designed for people in government service.

What is even better is that Iloilo students need not go to Ateneo-Rockwell because Ateneo-Rockwell will go to them. Professors from the Ateneo will be flying in from Manila every Saturday to conduct whole-day classes in Iloilo City. This unique distance education curriculum is part of the graduate school’s outreach program designed to improve the people’s access to high-quality education in the provinces. Hopefully, by equipping our mid-level bureaucrats with the necessary skills and higher-education learning, the quality of public service in Iloilo will improve further.

Dr. Dennis T. Gonzalez, academic program manager of the Ateneo School of Government, is presently in Iloilo City to interview prospective candidates. From 9am onwards, Dr. Gonzalez will be interviewing applicants at the Iloilo City Hall Budget Office. Only 25 scholars will be selected to take the masters course. Aside from City Hall employees, Councilors Parcon and Drilon-Garcia have also signified their interest in taking up the Ateneo Masters course.

Next Saturday (August 12), a Memorandum of Agreement will be signed by the Iloilo City government and the Ateneo School of Government to conduct the special distance learning program. Expected to lead the MOA-signing rites are Dr. Antonio Laviña, Dean of the Ateneo School of Government, Congressman Gonzalez, Mayor Treñas and other city officials.

That's right Ady. They already renamed Sta Maria Catholic School to STA MARIA - ATENEO DE ILOILO. They're planning to build a 7-hectare new campus in Pison's lot, Diversion Road. It'll host the new Ateneo de Iloilo in the future. I'll try to find you the latest news and photo (s) of the proposed new campus of Ateneo de Iloilo.

Ateneo de Iloilo-SMCS celebrates Jubilee Year for the Founding Fathers
Text and photos by Hacel D. Du

Santa Maria Catholic School now bears Ateneo de Iloilo as principal name of the educational institution founded by the early Jesuit companions in the Society of Jesus- Francis Xavier, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, and Blessed Peter Faber, whose Jubilee Year was celebrated last July 31, 2006 at the school's auditorium and activity area. The event, as part of the commemoration of the 450th and 500th anniversary of the founding Fathers, was attended by Atenean alumni, donors and benefactors of the school, prominent guests and local political figures. A mass was held first followed by a dinner which was opened with a fervent prayer from Fr. Edwin U. Castillo, S.J.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/08/02/ateneo.de.iloilo2.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/08/02/ateneo.de.iloilo3.jpg

One of the highlights of the event is the Ateneo de Iloilo Project Update, a fund raising mission to expand the school in a seven hectare site located in San Rafael, Mandurriao, Iloilo City. An establishment which was approved by Rome-based Jesuit Fr. General Peter Hans Kolvenbach and made possible by the Kauturan Pison Development Foundation.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/08/02/ateneo.de.iloilo4.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/08/02/ateneo.de.iloilo6.jpg

Fr. Manny A. Uy, S.J. expressed a message of encouragement and welcomed the generosity of the contributors and pledgers who are willing to assist the project.

In his speech, Mayor Jerry Treñas expressed his support believing that the proposed school can contribute greatly to the development and progress of the city through value formation and strengthening high quality education.

Fr. Romeo J. Intengan, S.J. also conveyed his gratitude for the support of the other Jesuit Fathers who made the dream possible and will make it happen here in Iloilo City.

Ateneo de Iloilo-SMCS believes that the proposed project to build a new school will benefit today's youth and the generations ahead.

Hihihi. Definitely, may ara na ako prospects.

that's what I've heard Mars. Baskog eh no. And starting daw next year na ang ila implementation sang digitalisation. What a grand scheme for the British people. Anyway, hope you'll make it Mars. Lots of things to enjoy here in Europe as you can see. And it's very promising to all of us.

parasite gid man ina ang PECO sa mga Ilonggo residents. They're eating up all our money, and their service is really awful. Mahal na ang kuryente, at times may brownout pa. And maisog pa to further increase power rate. Ay inano na lang ang PECO man?

Speaking of Downing Street, it stands on its own. Amo lang ina ang mahambal ko. And I'm glad the British government is more resilient but firmer than ever. Especially na subong sa nagakinatabo sa ME. People here are learning, and they'll definitely doing something sa bagay nga ina. Ang mga Becks lang naman ang TH to be become part and parcel of it. hihihi.

Tapos gid ang PECO sa imo ba. Har har har. Pero biskan diin mo nga anggulo tulukon, ginakurakutan gid kita sang PECO nga ini. Ilonggos, especially ang mga city residents should start protesting against PECO tungod saila ginapanghimo. Opening the power sector of the city looks a bit hazy to me. Kung may ara man, basi madugayan pa. And of course, we cannot lose more of time na kay nagadako ang kinahanglan nga kuryente sang ciudad.

Everytime, you mention the Becks, gakdalaw lang ako. It's power-tripping bal-an Mars.

This project is outside Iloilo BUT will surely affects Iloilo's power sector. Capiz echoing Iloilo power proposals. Well done to fellow Ilonggos and Capicenos!

Tapaz, Jamindan get solar power

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has installed several solar power systems in Tapaz and Jamindan, Capiz.

The DOST said it will soon turn over these projects to Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR).

The solar power project is part of the 1997 Philippine-Spain financial cooperation.

Recently, the Spanish government increased its financial commitments for the project’s second phase from $25.2 million to $27.6 million with the Philippine counterpart decreasing from $7.7 million in Phase 1 to $912,000 in Phase 2.

“These projects complement the State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, particularly the electrification of all villages in the country, access to the basic services such as clean water supply, improvements in health and education, and the provision of sustainable livelihood through the super region program,” said Solar Power Technology Support (SPOTS) project manager Reuben Quejas of the DAR.

Phase 2 of the Spots project aims to provide solar power to Agrarian Reform Communities (ARCs) with packages that can supply the power and energy needs for agricultural productivity and agribusiness. It also aims to supply electricity to community facilities such as health centers, barangay halls, community and school lighting system, including the “solar home lighting system” for households and the AC-10 “Block of Power” System.

Like SPOTS’ Phase 1, Phase 2 is seen as an integrated social and agricultural developmental project of the DAR targeting several ARCs.

The DAR will maintain its multi-agency approach with the Department of Energy and the National Electrification Administration (NEA) for the project’s sustenance.

Quejas said that the project will benefit the Visayas area including the four provinces of Panay Island (Aklan, Antique, Iloilo and Capiz) and Negros Occidental area.

FOR the first time, a regional line agency, a local government unit (LGU) and a State University in Western Visayas were awarded excellent in governance Thursday.

In the Regional Line Agencies category, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) in Western Visayas won the first prize for its Operation Dikit and Tax Mapping or Tax Compliance Verification Drive.

The program was launched in April 2005 and a joint project of the BIR and the Boy Scouts of the Philippines. It focuses on promoting issuance of an official receipts be every establishment and encouraging each customer to ask for an official receipt on every purchase they make.

Increased tax

Tax mapping or Tax Compliance Verification Drive, on the other hand, was implemented in line with the bureau's campaign to expand the tax bases and enhance voluntary compliance of taxpayers.

Both programs contributed to the BIR's increasing collections by hiking the number of taxpayers as well as tax filer's base. The tax mapping or tax compliance verification drive (TCVD) programs last year raised a total of P5.5 million collections as its outright collection on penalties and added a total of 256 tax filers.

After the Tax Mapping operations tax bases increased, thus it also helped increased collection on percentage taxes on taxpayers who are exempted from VAT in the amount of P4.7 million, on hotels by P1.5 million and on restaurants by P786,046.17. Furthermore, it helped increase VAT collection on wholesale and retail trading by P40 million, hotels and motels by P22 million and restaurants and caterers by P3.8 million.

Best practices on health

The second place winner was the Department of Health (DOH)-Center for Health Development (CHD) Region 6 for their Tuberculosis (TB)-Directly Observed Treatment Short (Dots) best practices and collection.

Dots was otherwise known as 'Tutok Gamutan', a comprehensive strategy to detect and cure TB patients by assigning a person to observe and watch the patient take right medications during the whole course of treatment.

It was duly endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (IUATLD).

The operation was made efficient with 17-installed Public-Private Mix Dots (PPMD) units region wide, 15 established TB Diagnostic Committees (TBDCs) and certified 88 facilities and accredited 35 facilities Dots Centers.

The best practices in implementing the program increased cure rate from 85 percent in 2002 to 88 percent in 2004 and decreased TB morbidity from 240.74 in 100,000 people in 2000 too 145.99 in 2004.It also decreased TB morality from 46.46 per 100,000 people to 23.79 in 2004.

The third placer was the Kapit Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan (Kalahi)-Comprehensive amd Integrated Delivery of Social Services(Cidss): Kapangyarihan at Kaunlaran sa Barangay(KKB) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 6.

It is village-based project, which uses a community-driven development approach to empower communities through their enhanced participation in developmental projects and activities geared towards the reduction of poverty and improvement of local governance. This project reduces poverty by providing seed funds for community infrastructure and common service facilities. It also improves governance by providing training programs and capacity strengthening for LGUs as local institutions.

As an example, a total of 30 pro-poor projects have been completed in the Municipality of Carles. These include classroom buildings, health stations, pump boats, post-harvest facilities, water systems, farm-to-market roads and mini-market.

Drug management

In the LGU provincial category, Capiz won the first place with its Drug Management Reforms (Parallel Drug Importation (PDI). The PDI is the importation of a drug from another country where a pharmaceutical company sells the same drug at a considerably lower price.

Capiz was the first LGU in the country to procure imported medicines from the Philippine International Trading Corporation (PITC), which imports off patent branded medicines that were being sold in India at a lower cost.

The project was initially funded with half a million to purchase drugs that could aid in the cure of the leading causes of mortality or morbidity in Capiz, and a trust fund later on.

These medicines were sold in all government hospital pharmacies and are 44 percent cheaper than their local counterparts.

Children

The second placer was Antique's country program for children (CPC). This was a program, which focused on disparity reduction in terms of health and nutrition primary and secondary education, poverty and child care protection. These were made flesh with the implementation of programs like Health and Nutrition, Education for all, Children in Need of Special Protection, Local Policy and Institutional Development and Communication.

Tourism, employment

In the cities category, Roxas won first place with its establishment if "diwal" (angel wings shell food) sanctuaries through transplantation in Roxas City Waters project. This contributed not only to the tourism aspect of the City but also created employment for the people in the said place.

The City of Sipalay on the other hand, wins the next top place with its Development of Tourism Industry project. This was through the adaptation of the latest information technology.

Academe

On the academe's category, the University of the Philippines (UPV) topped the competition with its Development of UPV Health Service Unit in Miag-ao as a Primary Care Hospital; second, Negros State College of Agriculture's Food-Always-In-The-Home (Faith) Garden Program; and third, Aklan State University with its State University DYMT Community Radio.

The Regional Development Council (RDC) 6, National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) 6 and the German Technical Cooperation Decentralization Program (GTZ) conducted the honoring of the best public sector projects.

National executives such as Neda Secretary Romulo Neri, Presidential Chief of Staff Mike Defensor, Dr. Herwig Mayer of the GTZ, and Antique Governor Salvacion Perez were present.

The latter said that these projects and other nominated projects were worthy of emulation and should be replicated not only in the region.

^^ Gotta point there. Ako honestly, i'm proud of Dinagyang and happy for this festival but being world-famous, papunta pa lang dun yun. I say, doing an effort to achieve that goal is possible.

May mga ibang bayan nga sa Pilipinas, grabe mag-advertise na "world class" pero di pa nga naririnig sa Maynila yung festival. At least for Dinagyang, it is famous.
