PNoy still looking for his 'palangga'

AMITA O. LEGASPI, GMA News
04/01/2011 | 07:59 PM

President Benigno Simeon Aquino III, who usually refuses to talk about his love life, admitted Friday that he is still looking for his ‘palangga’ – an Ilonggo word for “loved one" or “lover."

In his speech at the ceremonial distribution of social services in Iloilo City, Aquino said there were so many beautiful girls in the province.

“Madamo gali sang gwapa diri sa Iloilo," he said, adding: “Dahil ako po ay naghahanap pa ng palangga. Kadalasan po palanggana lang ang nadatnan natin."

In an interview with reporters after the event, the President said he has been looking for the “right one" for about 33 years.

Aquino is now 51 years old.

“About 33 years ko nang ginagawa ‘yan. Hindi mo naman puwedeng sabihin priority ko pa iyon, pero kapag bigla na lang magmilagro isang araw dumating bigla diyan, ikaw ang una kong iimbitahin. Ngayon ikaw naman ang hindi iimbitahin kung hindi naman matuloy," he told the reporter who asked about his remark during the speech.

Asked if somebody broke his heart, he said many girls did.

“Kapag tinitingnan ko naman [karanasang] iyon, hindi naman ako pinersonal," he said, adding that they were just not meant for each other.

“Kapag ganoon po, hindi kayo tugma, ganoon lang po iyon, naghahanap ako ng partner for life, hindi naman puwedeng partner for the next two months, for the next six months," Aquino added.

He said Senator Franklin Drilon and Iloilo Governor Art Defensor were lucky because they were able to find their partners in life.

“Nahanap nila ang kanilang mga partners in life right away. May balance din naman sa mundo, siguro darating din iyong time ko," he said.

Before the distribution of social services, President Aquino attended the inauguration of 2 x 82-megawatt coal-fired power plants held at the Multipurpose Hall of the Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC), Barangay Ingore, also in Iloilo.

'Clean' coal-fired plant

The construction of the newly-inaugurated coal-fired power plant, which uses "clean coal" technology, began in January 2009. It will also be the first base-load power plant to be operated in the country.

The power plant uses the latest circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler technology which ensures practically negligible levels of emissions (95% and higher efficiency in removing sulfur dioxide and practically zero nitrogen oxide) and capture of total solid particles at 99.9-percent efficiency.

PEDC's power plant is in line with Global Power’s campaign for cleaner transitional technology.

In his keynote speech, Aquino underscored the significance of having a reliable source of energy to a nation’s progress, even as he encouraged the local residents to explore other sources that will lure more investors and eventually uplift the economic development of the province.

He also stressed the important contributions the new power plant will bring, not only to Iloilo City but also to its neighboring provinces.

“Indeed, this new found security in energy will eventually spur both investments and tourism, thus, uplifting the economic stature of the localities," the President said.

“This is both a good sign and a challenge. With this power plant in place, the next step forward is to augment the projected power requirements in the whole Visayas grid with new and appropriate energy technologies. We should also start exploring and harnessing the potential of renewable sources such as solar, wind, and hydro power, among others that are abundant in your area", he added.

The Chief Executive said reliable source of energy is a foundation of progress. “Lack of access to sustainable energy is a drawback to economic and social development of a country," he added.

Aquino also thanked the PEDC for investing in the P20-billion peso coal-fired power plant.

The new power plant, the President said, heralds a new era of electric generation in Panay for it will serve as a great boost to the entire Visayas grid, providing reliable, secure, and reasonably-priced electricity to the region. — LBG, GMA News

Good evening, Iloilo! It's nice to read that this city is following in the footsteps of Cebu. Who knows in the future you will be able to wrest back the title you once possessed.

Anyway, I'm not an Ilonggo and I have difficulty deciphering some of the words. But since my first language is Cebuano I could somehow "approximate" the words. I'm just interested to know about this city because my family is contemplating on moving out of Metro Manila and I was sort of looking for an ideal place. A place not so urban, a place of retirement for my dad.

Well Iloilo can be perfect. All the amenities of a comfortable modern lifestyle without the frenetic pace of Manila. Being Ilonggo who's now based in Manila, I can attest to that.

M’WORLD P20-B PROJECT BREAKS GROUND MAY 6

http://thedailyguardian.com/images/stories/040411_MEGAWORLD.jpg

By Francis Allan L. Angelo

LAND developer Megaworld Corp. will break ground its multibillion project at the old Iloilo airport in Mandurriao, Iloilo City next month.

In an interview with Serbisyo Publiko hosted by Councilor Perla Zulueta over Sky Cable Sunday, Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said Senator Franklin Drilon informed him that Megaworld will hold the groundbreaking May 6.

Mabilog said the Andrew Tan-owned firm will spend P20 billion over a 10-year period to develop the 54-hectare old airport lot.

“That P20-billion investment is just from Megaworld alone. The company also invited other firms that will invest in Iloilo City particularly at the old airport site,” Mabilog said.

http://thedailyguardian.com/images/stories/040411_Jed_serbisyo.jpg
MEGAWORLD SITE. Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog confirms at Serbisyo Publiko of Kagawad Perla Zulueta that Megaworld Corporation finally has set a date for the groundbreaking of its P20-B project at the old Iloilo Airport site in Mandurriao district. The 54.5-hectare lot will become an IT park complete with hotels and a convention center. (Photo by Tara Yap)
Among the initial developments Megaworld will put up on the site is a hospital to be run by a group of doctors from UP-Philippine General Hospital and a theme park.

Megaworld bought the Iloilo airport from the national government in October 2007 for P1.2 billion.

The developer plans to develop the 54.5-hectare lot into the Iloilo Business Park with facilities such as hotels, hospital, convention facilities and business process outsourcing offices.

In a presentation to the Iloilo City government, Megaworld announced that the old airport runway will be converted into an eight-lane highway which will become the main artery of the business park.

The buildings will be mostly low-rise to mid-rise buildings (up to 12 floors) for commercial spaces.

At the center of the property is a large space for a 5,000-seat convention center and a hotel. The southern end of the property is reserved for a hypermart and a theme park.

Megaworld envisions the project “to become a magnet for major business process outsourcing (BPO) companies interested to set up shop in the Visayas region.”

Megaworld timed the groundbreaking with the launching of the commercial operations of the first coal-fired power plant in Iloilo City owned by Panay Energy Development Corp.

Mabilog said the availability of cheap and stable power became a factor in Megaworld’s decision to start its multibillion project in Iloilo City.

Megaworld is the pioneer developer of urban information technology/BPO parks in the country starting with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority-accredited Eastwood City CyberPark. The CyberPark is a centerpiece of Eastwood City, its premier live-work-play project in Quezon City.

Megaworld replicated its initial success in Eastwood City in other parts of Metro Manila, namely, Newport City at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City and McKinley Hill at Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City.

Drilon funds over P200-M worth of projects in city

ILOILO City – More than P200-million worth of projects here will be realized through Sen. Franklin Drilon who will finance major development plans of this city.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the Ilonggo senator has already assured and given the funds for different city priority projects.

To start anytime soon is the planned Iloilo River esplanade amounting to P150-million, which will pave the way for a long, open area from the stretch of Treñas Boulevard in Mandurriao district to Drilon Bridge in La Paz.

“It will be developed into a recreational place for walking, for stalls and restaurants, and will also have viewing decks,” Mabilog said.

Drilon has likewise given P750,000 to fund alternative livelihood programs for fish pen operators who were told to stop their illegal activities along the Iloilo River.

The amount is already with the City Agriculturist’s Office, according to Mabilog.

Meanwhile, the senator had at least P50 million of his budget for farm-to-market roads realigned to be utilized for the establishment of a cattle line at the city slaughterhouse in Brgy. Tacas, Jaro.
Mabilog said the improvement will help the abattoir attain Double “A” classification.

Other projects Drilon committed to help are the rehabilitation of the Iloilo Terminal Market Building, and the road widening in Calumpang up to Sto. Niño area in Arevalo district. (LMS, Iloilo City PIO/PN)

Things that I can describe with the newly renovated Cathedral:

Nag-sanag sa sulod
Tinlo tan-awon
Vivid sang kulor

I'm so happy to read such development sa aton siyudad nga pinalangga... Ara na ang Megaworld, a national player with a credible reputation... Indi lahug lahug nga company... Once mag umpisa na ni, expect a rapid growth in our city... In a short span of time, nag tululuhaw ang tanan... I'm sure Iloilo Esplanade is a major hit considering damu na subong nga mga tawo ang galagaw sa Trenas Boulevard... Once may restaurant, kapehan, kag stalls na dira, mas magiging patok pa gid na... Ginaplastar na ni Sen. Drilon ang siyudad sang maayo... tanan nga pamaagi para mag uswag ginahimo nya kay I'm sure during his retirement sa Iloilo gid siya mamalagi...

MEGAWORLD P20-B PROJECT
TO BOOST ILOILO’S ECONOMY
By Francis Allan L. Angelo

THE Iloilo Business Club (IBC) said the entry of Megaworld Corp. will further invigorate the economy of the city and province of Iloilo.

Ma. Lea Victoria Lara, IBC executive director, confirmed the report that Megaworld will break ground the development of the 54-hectare old airport lot May 6.

Lara said Senator Franklin Drilon announced the groundbreaking during the general membership meeting of IBC in Amigo Terrace Hotel last March 31.
Megaworld eyes to spend P20 billion over a 10-year period to develop the airport lot which it bought for P1.2 billion in 2007.

The initial developments will include the construction of a hospital and a theme park.

Lara said Megaworld will also put up information technology buildings and a hotel under the Richmonde chain.

“Megaworld also made that commitment to Senator Drilon that they will make Iloilo their hub for real estate development just like what Ayala did for Cebu,” Lara added.

The IBC official said Drilon will also allocate P150 million for the first phase of the Iloilo River Esplanade project which will be completed end of this year.

The first phase of the esplanade project will start next year. The project was designed by Architect Paolo Alcazaren who also conceived the Singapore Quay project.

The esplanade will complement efforts to cleanup and rehabilitate the Iloilo River by providing environmentally sound structures for leisure activities.

Lara said Megaworld also pledged to support and develop the Iloilo River esplanade project.

Aside from job opportunities, Lara said the IBC sees increase in spending capacity and other positive effects of the Megaworld and esplanade projects in Iloilo.

“All things are looking up for Iloilo. Just think about the jobs these developments will provide the Ilonggos and the fresh spending capacity that will be infused in the local economy. We are all very excited over these developments and hopefully, this will already be the start of wonderful things to come for Iloilo,” she said.

Iloilo’s power firm top importer for ‘10

THE Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC) is the top coal power importer registered by the Bureau of Customs here.

Based on the bureau’s accomplishment report for 2010, the construction of the 164-mw coal-fired power plant in Iloilo City by PEDC indicated a positive deviation for the port’s collection.

Notwithstanding that the construction of the new power plant here is exempted from paying customs duties, PEDC paid a total of P793,380,741 for the value-added taxes of its imported machineries and equipment, showing an improved port’s collection by 58.69 percent for last year.

Jose Naig, deputy district collector, said the government gives incentives to investors putting up power plants in its aim to stabilize energy sources, by exempting them from paying the BoC duties.

PEDC is constructing an P18-billion coal fired power plant at Brgy. Ingore, La Paz, Iloilo City.

PEDC is followed by National Food Authority representing 32.09 percent in port collection; Petrongas Energy Philippines, Inc., 2.74 percent; Sen and Sons Realty, Inc., 2.54 percent; and Shell Gas (LPG) Philippines, Inc., 1.84 percent. (PNA)

Sufficient power can boost tourism
By Tara Yap

ASIDE from bringing sustainable energy to Western Visayas, President Benigno “PNoy” Aquino III sees the operation of the region’s first coal-fired power plant to boost the tourism sector.

“This new found security in energy will spur both investments and tourism and uplift the economic stature of the localities,” Aquino noted in his first official visit to Iloilo City Friday at the ceremonial switching on of the 164-megawatt coal-fired power plant owned by Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC).

Citing the construction of 23 new hotels in the Visayas with an additional 1,200-room capacity for tourists, Aquino emphasized the domino effect of the entry of sustainable energy in creating more jobs in the tourism industry.

The President explained that it will give a sustainable livelihood to engineers, construction workers, front desk clerks, chefs, waiters, drivers, and even street vendors who sell candies on the sidewalk.

The 164-megawatt coal-fired power plant of PEDC, a subsidiary of Global Business Power Corp. (GBPC) under the Metrobank Group of Companies, has been transmitting power to Iloilo City since November 2010 after it began its test commissioning stage last September 2010.

It addressed the power shortage that resulted to long daily blackouts in Iloilo City and the rest of Panay island.

Meanwhile, the coal plant’s operation is also seen to bring in more investors in the business process outsourcing industry (BPO).

Speaking of "complete by the end of this year," I wonder what happened to the Capitolio Provincial's planned renovation? We're entering the second quarter and it seems that the Casa Real is still silent as of the moment.

Business leaders to help
energize Iloilo City tourism

BY JEZZA NEPOMOCENO

ILOILO City – Business leaders have expanded and strengthened their partnership with the government to help the Philippines, particularly this city’s tourism industry.

The Research for Education and Institutional Development (REID) Foundation and six leading business chambers in the country sworn to help and assist the Philippine government through the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and Department of Tourism (DOT) identify infrastructure gaps needed to heighten tourism here.

The two parties vowed to make this city a premier tourist destination during the launching and signing of a memorandum of cooperation for REID's program called "Partnership for Better Infrastructure" at Amigo Terrace Hotel recently.

Those who committed to attain such were REID Foundation Chairman Dr. Emilio Antonio Jr. and President Prof. Enrico Basilio, Palawan Tourism Council President Nick Gitsis, Iloilo Business Club (IBC) Chairman Juan Jose Jamora III, Gordon Alan Joseph of Cebu Business Club, Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. Presidents Dr. Maria Lourdes Monteverde of Davao City, Atty. Lucas Nuñag of Bohol and Dr. Francisco Villanueva Jr. of Angeles City.

Such commitment, according to Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and Cong. Jerry Treñas, is a strong manifestation of "public-private partnership" (PPP) that will be beneficial for the city's economic growth.

If more undertakings will be made similar to this, Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. said this city will be able to regain its lost distinction as “Queen City of the South.”

Iloilo Business Club Executive Director Lea Lara said the partnership believes that by putting the necessary tourism infrastructures in place, both international and domestic tourist arrivals will increase, thereby making the city’s tourism competitive and attractive to foreign investments.

The partnership is being supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and The Asia Foundation.

Meanwhile, Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim, Public Works Secretary Raul Asis and Sen. Franklin Drilon who graced the event expressed to support program's cause.

Also present were USAID Mission Director Gloria Diño-Steele, REID Foundation Vice President Cherry Lyn Rodolfo, The Asia Foundation Director for Economic Reform and Development Jaime Faustino and other local and national business leaders./PN

Speaking of "complete by the end of this year," I wonder what happened to the Capitolio Provincial's planned renovation? We're entering the second quarter and it seems that the Casa Real is still silent as of the moment.

kung halin ang balita kay DEAFensor, mapati ka? Sa isa niya ka-tuig dira sa Capitol, I haven't seen any concrete or big project nga nahimu-an niya. DEAFensor is all talk -- wala-wala gid nga klase gobernador. Sayang lang ang boto sang pumuluyo sa iya.

MABILOG BOWS TO YEETotal demolition of illegal resto stopped

BY GLENDA SOLOGASTOA

ILOILO City – Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog has bowed to the wishes of Councilor Edward Yee to stop the total demolition of the latter’s restaurant by the Iloilo River yesterday.

The neophyte mayor has also given his political ally another one-month reprieve.

According to City Legal Officer Jose Junio Jacela, Yee sought a meeting with Mabilog yesterday and there swayed the mayor to stop the demolition.

But there appeared to be some haggling that happened.

Yee offered to withdraw the complaint he filed against the mayor before the Office of the Ombudsman for alleged abuse of discretion, and withdraw, too, the petition for certiorari he filed with the Court of Appeals regarding the demolition of his restaurant.

Yee, according to Jacela, promised to keep his word – that is, to voluntarily tear down his illegal structure.

The demolition team of the city government’s Task Force on Anti-Squatting and Illegal Structures (TF-ASIS) was already at the Barbeque Park site yesterday and prepared to resume the demolition that it started Thursday last week.

There were also fully-armed policemen ready to protect the task force personnel and maintain peace and order in the area.

Two unidentified men pelted the task force’s demolition team with stones, causing some tension.

The two later fled.

Then came Mabilog’s order stopping the task force.

The mayor invoked “humanitarian reasons” for giving Yee another month starting yesterday to voluntarily demolish his restaurant, notwithstanding the fact that the councilor had ignored the previous one month (the whole of March) reprieve given him to voluntarily do the removal himself.

Barbeque Park has been identified by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Public Works and Highways as an illegal structure.

According to Jacela, the total demolition of another illegal structure just across the street from Barbeque Park – the Ryan’s Grill and Seafoods restaurant – was also deferred by Mabilog yesterday.

Rogelio Fanuñal, the owner, was also given another month to voluntarily demolish his illegal structure.

In can be recalled that the demolition of Yee’s restaurant started on Thursday but not after some hesitation by Mabilog.

According to Mabilog, what made him decide to order the demolition was a portion of Yee’s letter telling him that the city councilor would voluntarily remove “some parts of his illegal structure” only.

“I initially wanted to give him a chance to prove that he has taken full responsibility over his illegal structure. But because he was not sincere, I ordered the demolition to go on,” Mabilog explained.

Yesterday, Mabilog again changed his mind in Yee’s favor.

Yee apparently got more than what he originally wanted to bargain for. In the letter Mabilog was referring to last Thursday, Yee actually only asked that he be given until April 15 to voluntarily remove his commercial establishment, claiming that he had not yet explained to his employees their employment situation, and for him to conduct an inventory of things in his restaurant.

But yesterday, Mabilog gave Yee not just 15 days but a full month of reprieve.

For refusing to voluntarily demolish his illegal structure despite the one month (whole of March) deadline given by Mabilog, Yee came under heavy criticism, most especially from Sen. Franklin Drilon.

Drilon could not be reached for comment yesterday regarding Mabilog’s softening stance on Yee./PN

BEWARE THE IDES OF APRIL, MAYOR JED

EDWARD Yee, the most hated man in Iloilo City, has successfully convinced Mayor Jed Mabilog of Iloilo City to postpone yesterday’s total demolition of his ugly Barbeque Park.
Yee was able to persuade the mayor that he will instead do the job of demolishing his own “house-house” because he knows he has no more legal anchor to prolong his dillydallying tactic.
Since the mayor is gullible and has no balls to fight for what is right, he abhorrently surrendered to the stupid request.
What is deplorable is the fact that Yee filed charges against Mayor Jed with the Office of the Ombudsman, praying, among others, that the respondent mayor be suspended while that the case against him is still pending.
Once suspended, Vice Mayor Joe the 3rd will take over city hall.
Mayor Jed should not underestimate the capacity and influence of Yee.
Remember that during the time of Ganzon, he was able to make life miserable for the late mayor after the later was suspended.
According to an intelligence report, Yee, in conspiracy with Cong. Jerry, wants Vice Joe to taste the sweetness of power as OIC mayor.
We just echo the intelligence report and sans malice on our part.

Finally! MW arrival will signal a new dawn in Iloilo economy. :okay:

PhP 20B is HUGE considering PEDC also invested PhP 20B for power!
Take note the PhP20B is from MW alone... how much more if there are locators already? That would be an added PhP 1-7B I guess. :D

Wala lang, there is something...some "mojo" if there is a tough competition for Dinagyang--like last year. Daw may excitement kag adrenaline rush. But as far as the latest list can be seen, looks like Iloilo doesn't have a tough competitor this year.

AFAIK my wife was invited by Megaworld few years ago during their public consultation, being a placement officer of CPU, she was asked if she can provide better graduates for their BPO operation. Well, she said she can. Only CPU I think has a the only placement office amongst the colleges and universities in Iloilo. That time the only problem with Iloilo is power, she only told me .:)

Knowledge Process Outsourcing. AFAIK, it demands high-knowledge decisions regarding outsourced works such as in accounting, editorial and law. A lot of them are located here in Manila such as Thomson Reuters and probably Accenture. It demands highly-skilled professionals and pay more than just taking the call.

Yellow and brown... I don't see what was wrong with the previous cream (?) color that exactly matched the building and didn't seem to need repainting. I hope they don't repaint the capitol with yellow and brown too.:runaway:

Knowledge Process Outsourcing. AFAIK, it demands high-knowledge decisions regarding outsourced works such as in accounting, editorial and law. A lot of them are located here in Manila such as Thomson Reuters and probably Accenture. It demands highly-skilled professionals and pay more than just taking the call.

IMO, we have the needed manpower for this KPO, just needs further training. There are hundreds of accounting/law graduates per year.

Iloilo to be included
in open skies policy

By Francis Allan L. Angelo

ILOILO will be included in the open skies policy per directive of President Benigno Aquino III.

Iloilo City Jed Patrick Mabilog said President Aquino told him to write a letter for the inclusion of Iloilo in the open skies policy which will usher in international flights to the Iloilo airport of international standard.

“President Aquino said he will make sure that Iloilo will fall under the open skies policy because our airport can accommodate such flights,” Mabilog said.
The open-skies policy is an aviation principle that allows foreign airlines to operate unlimited services in another country.

President Aquino recently signed Executive Orders (EO) No. 28 and 29, which will further open up the country’s aviation industry.

EO 28 contains the reorganization of the Philippine air negotiating panel and the air consultation panel, while EO 29 authorizes the Civil Aeronautics Board and the Philippine Air Panels to pursue more aggressively the international civil aviation liberalization policy.

EO 29 aims to “ease restrictions” on domestic aviation.

“To boost the country’s competitiveness as a tourism destination and investment location, there is a need for the country to pursue more aggressively a liberalization policy in international aviation through the grant of third, fourth and fifth freedom rights and unrestricted capacities and frequencies to foreign air carriers, among others,” EO 29 reads.

The president has also given the Civil Aviation Authority one year to resolve the issue with the United States and the European Union (EU). The United States has downgraded the Southeast Asian country, while EU has imposed a ban against Philippine carriers.

Mabilog said he will also meet businessman Lance Gokongwei, chief executive officer of Cebu Pacific Airlines, to discuss the possibility of flights from Iloilo to Hong Kong and Incheon, South Korea.

“Hopefully, we could get positive response from Cebu Pacific to start international flights (here),” he said.

Iloilo Business Club (IBC) executive director Lea Victoria Lara said they also see benefits from the open skies policy.

Lara said aside from bringing in tourists from other parts of Asia, international flights to Iloilo will support investments in business processes outsourcing (BPO) industry and other sectors.

Lara said the IBC will study the policy as to its benefits and measures to avoid abuses that may affect the local airline industry.

Wala lang, there is something...some "mojo" if there is a tough competition for Dinagyang--like last year. Daw may excitement kag adrenaline rush. But as far as the latest list can be seen, looks like Iloilo doesn't have a tough competitor this year.

I agree. We might fall into a "surprise" because as far as the judges are concerned, they are keen into choreography and even the cultural aspect of it.

As per source, Rommel have changed the choreography of San Pedro/Pan-ay for Aliwan and it is much better daw. I hope so coz when I saw their performance sa Freedom, daw medyo dragging and not snappy ang execution.

The problem with Paghidaet was--recycled routine since 2008. Nadula na ang "wow" factor nila.

Alliance Global raises P9.73B to bankroll tourism business

ALLIANCE GLOBAL Group, Inc., the listed conglomerate of property tycoon Andrew L. Tan, has raised almost P10 billion from private investors after selling treasury and secondary shares.
The fresh funds will be used to bankroll the expansion of its tourism business to new locations, the company told the local bourse yesterday.

“The deal was upsized from approximately P6.14 billion to approximately P9.73 billion at a share price of P11.16 per share,” Alliance Global Group said.

The proceeds came from Alliance Global Group sale of 550.1 million treasury shares late on Monday while property arm Megaworld Corp. sold all its stake in the holding firm or 321.9 million secondary shares.

The offer price was a 7% discount on the P12 per share closing price on Monday.

“The proceeds from the offer would be used for Alliance Global Group’s capital expenditures to expand the company’s integrated tourism-related portfolio in the Philippines as well as other general corporate purposes,” the company said.

UBS Investment Bank acted as sole bookrunner for the transaction.

With the re-issuance of the treasury shares, Alliance Global now has 10.27 billion issued and outstanding shares and 10.11 billion listed shares.

Earlier, the conglomerate had said it wanted to develop the 54-hectare old Iloilo airport and a 25-hectare property in Mactan, Cebu. Alliance Global also said it will spend P7 billion on tourism ventures outside Metro Manila.

These will complement the eight-hectare Resorts World Manila entertainment and casino complex in Pasay, the first integrated tourism development of Alliance Global through its 50% stake in Travellers International Hotel Group, Inc.

Travellers International is a joint venture with Genting Hong Kong Ltd., the third-largest cruise line operator in the world.

The project is composed of the country’s largest casino, the five-star Marriott Hotel, and the six-star Maxims Hotel. It will also have the Remington and Belmont hotels, along with a 1,500-seat theater, fine-dining restaurants, and a shopping mall.

Alliance Global Group also holds the local McDonald’s fastfood franchise through its unit Golden Arches Development Corp. and owns Emperador Distillers, Inc. that produces brandy labels Emperador, Generoso and The Bar.

The holding firm has recorded P5.39 billion in profits in the nine months that ended in September last year, up by 63% from the same period in 2009, latest figures show. Its shares sank by 6% or 73 centavos to close at P11.28 each yesterday. -- Neil Jerome C. Morales

ILOILO CITY AT YEE’S MERCY
Drilon: River project can’t proceed
BY JEZZA NEPOMOCENO

http://www.panaynewsphilippines.com/Images%20of%20the%20day/PN%20inside%20photo1%20link.jpg

ILOILO City – The multi-million Iloilo River Development Project cannot proceed if illegal structures, including Councilor Edward Yee’s Barbeque Park, remain on the arm of the sea, said Sen. Franklin Drilon.

The councilor has successfully stopped the city government’s demolition team from completely tearing down his restaurant on Tuesday.

Drilon said he supported Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog’s decision to give Yee another month to voluntarily dismantle his restaurant.

But the councilor must keep his promise to demolish his illegal structure on or before May 4, Drilon stressed.

The one-month reprieve that Mabilog gave Yee

began on April 4.

Drilon said he will make sure that the demolition of Barbeque Park will push through if Yee will renege on his promise.

“As a public servant, Yee should be the first to follow (the rule of law),” Drilon said.

Barbeque Park has been identified as an illegal structure on the Iloilo River by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Public Works and Highways. But Yee has been reluctant to demolish his restaurant.

Drilon is supportive of the city government’s P150-million Iloilo River Development Project that aims to transform the arm of the sea into a viable tourism attraction and economic booster.

Yee understands very well the rationale behind the project because he is an urban planner, said Drilon.

As a city councilor, Yee ought to work for the city’s growth, Drilon added.

Yee is the chairman of Sangguniang Panlungsod’s Committee on Zoning and Urban Planning, and vice chairperson of Committee on Environment and Ecology.

According to Forester Raul Lorilla of the DENR Region 6, Yee’s restaurant has no basis to stay on public land because his application to use the area (bank of the Iloilo River near the Diversion Road) expired last February of 1992 yet.

Yee applied to occupy 1,422 square meters of the public domain on February 1991 but was only given one year to use the land, revealed Lorilla.

The city councilor, however, continued operating his Barbeque Park and even expanded the area his restaurant occupied to 2,421 square meters, Lorilla said.

“If Yee will remove his structure early this May, it will not affect or delay our plans (for the Iloilo River). The designs are in place and soon, the bidding will take place,” Drilon said.

The construction of a 2.5-kilometer promenade from Treñas Boulevard in Mandurriao district going to Drilon Bridge in La Paz district will start by June or July this year, according to the senator.

The project is expected to be finished by December this year.

Aside from the P150-million river project, the senator has also financed the P750,000 cash assistance for the affected fisherfolk whose illegal fish pens will be removed to give way to the project./PN

1) LAWYERS Art Alinio and Nick Sonalan are few legal eagles who have sweet time for themselves notwithstanding their voluminous files of cases, some of which are high-profile cases.
They have time management that strictly connives with their respective schedules. Instead of fighting the unconquerable forces of time, they abide by it and enjoy it.

5) THE Iloilo City Council mulls a resolution declaring Councilor Edward Yee persona non grata. Yee has given a bad name to the Council. He is a member of the legislative body but instead of being a law-abiding citizen, he is a law breaker. Tarso!

Here's what Yee may have thought. If possible, his Barbeque Park may be constructed or perhaps rent a commercial space if it is within the plan of the Iloilo Esplanade. The question is, does the said project include commercial spaces for rent/lease for those who would like to invest? At least that is a income-generating park, not just an expense for maintenance. I think the esplanade in Singapore has some commercial spaces for rent/lease.

If that would indeed push through, then at least Yee has an option to rebuild BBQ Park on a legal basis.

And here's hoping that CebuPac will take the lead for flights between Iloilo and neighbouring Asian cities. Also, maybe Mayor Jed can extend his approach to other airlines pa gid to fasttrack sining plano.:cheers::cheers::cheers::cheers:

typical DEAFensor.

Dapat sa next nga election, indi na pag-botohon si DEAFensor kay wala hinimu-an sa probinsiya. Pirmi lang palpak si Gov iya. Basi pirmi siya natuyo dira sa capitol?:lol::lol::lol: We must be grateful sa ka-agresibo sang ciudad, a lot of investors and businessesmen came to see and explore the rest of Iloilo, too, hence, dalagku-an ang mga projects nga naga-sululod sa metrotowns esp real estate developments plus more because of the activites sa ciudad sang Iloilo. Kung i-asa lang sang mga municipalties sang Iloilo kay Defensor ang developments, wala-wala gid. :bash::bash::bash::bash::bash:

Young Ilonggo execs join
fight to help save Iloilo River
By Florence F. Hibionada

HOW’S this for inspiration to the Iloilo City Government hierarchy?

Young Ilonggo professionals will band for the cause and campaign of helping the Iloilo River regain its beauty and splendour.

Recognizing the need to be involved, a group from a non-profit socio-civic organization will launch series of projects set to kick off next month.
This, as the project movers said they recognize the Iloilo River’s “ecological significance and cultural value” with the cause seen to help preserve the river for future generations.

“For thousands of years, the Iloilo River has been the vital source of livelihood and cultural symbol of Ilonggos. From the very of heart of this beautiful and serene river, the Ilonggo’s way of life intertwined with their past glories and future visions,” wrote Cristina Gemora, charter president of JCI Metro Iloilo Dinagyang. “It has been the meek witness and instrumental to the emergence of Iloilo’s claim as the former queen city of the south and international trading port in Asia. But for several decades, this magnificent estuary has been threatened by dreadful conditions and negligence that rapidly leading to the lost of its pristine beauty.”

Main event for the project is a marathon open to runners all over the region. Then there is the “Piso Para sa Iloilo River” fundraising campaign and the 1 million signature campaign for advocacy commitment of locals.

“Another supporting project and the first-of-its-kind for Ilonggo pop culture is the unveiling of the theme song for Iloilo River originally composed, performed and recorded by some of Iloilo’s new generation of music artists. The Ilonggo song entitled “Aton Manggad” (Our Wealth) will be released in FM stations to promote the campaign for Iloilo River protection and will soon have a music video for online release,” added Gemora.

Meanwhile, Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog continues to flip-flop on the demolition issue by the Iloilo River. Benefitting from Mabilog’s generosity and goodwill on the matter is Iloilo City Councilor Ed Yee and the Yee-owned Barbecue Park.

Barbecue Park has been declared an illegal structure with all other major structures in the area already demolished.

As per latest development, Yee was granted “executive clemency” on the demolition and allowed to leave the area in his sweet time of 30 days.

No papers nor documents needed to seal the deal, city government lawyer Jun Jacela told reporters saying “word of honor” is more than enough.

ILOILO ARM OF THE SEA, ARCHITECT ALCAZAREN

THE development of the Iloilo City Arm of the Sea (commonly called Iloilo River) has a ready budget of P150 million.

The amount comes from Sen. Frank Drilon’s pork barrel.

A beautiful architectural plan by well-known Architect Paolo Alcazaren, the design is also finished and ready for implementation.

Architect Alcazaren was one of those few brilliant architects who helped the improvement of the Singapore River.

Sen. Frank’s projects in Iloilo City and province have practically widened the economic layers of growth unsurpassed by what other Ilonggo politicians had done so far.

His legacies will stay permanent in the annals of history.

If you want to call it Iloilo Estuary only, then what do you want to call its source - the upper part? :) Why not call it as it is - Iloilo River?

I can sense a soaring demand of power from investments by Megaworld and other big companies entering Iloilo City in next few months. Subong pa lang, naga-seek na ang MW sang supply stability. I'm sure before 2015, another 82MW will be added sa coal-fired power plant or maybe more pa.

not far from reality ... with Iloilo's increasing demand for better transport and mobility of its people, business and investors across the island, the region and beyond, the planned revival of Panay Railways will always be a great option to consider in the future. Fingers crossed !
