Hello sa tanan nga mga Ilonggo. I've been lurking for quite sometime on this thread but never really cared to post anything until I saw some really nice pictures of Iloilo. Grabe na gid ang improvements. I left my beloved hometown 7 years ago for better opportunities abroad. Pihado magpuli ko makibot gid ko sang kanami ya. Kudos to everyone who take pictures religiously and posts articles for everybody's benefit. Your enthusiasm brings a positive vibe for a reader like me who is thousands of miles away from Iloilo. Salamat guid!

THE Lopez Group of Companies chaired by industrialist Oscar Lopez is interested to put up major development projects in Iloilo City, Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said.

Rafael Alunan of Adtel and Lopez Group recently paid Mabilog a visit to inquire on the possibility of conducting businesses here and to offer interest on helping the city attain development.

Mabilog said Alunan assured help in negotiating and convincing the landowner of an area in Loboc, Barrio Obrero to sell or allow developing the vacant lot into an industrial estate and export processing zone.

Alunan said he would talk with the landowner Valderrama family based in Negros Occidental to realize the project.

Mabilog also said Alunan assured help in providing potable water for residents of the Uswag San Isidro Subdivision formerly the San Isidro relocation site in Jaro town.

The city mayor said by June next school year, a school will be established for Grade 1 to Grade 3 inside the subdivision so that children of relocatees will be enrolled.

The relocation site is starting to expand with several housing units subdivided into villages. Among the donors are the Gawad Kalinga, Habitat for Humanity, Panay Electric company, the Government of Italy, former congressman Raul Gonzalez Jr., and CLIFF and Homeless Peoples Int.

A concrete road was constructed while two units of passenger jeepneys will soon ply the subdivision and its many villages.

Similarly, electrical posts are being set up by the Panay Electric Company (Peco) for the whole subdivision currently consisting of more than 1,000 houses of relocatees from 23 city barangays.

The urban poor relocatees are composed of families living in danger zones, such as riverbanks and creeks, typhoon victims and those ejected from their homes by private landowners. (Lydia C. Pendon)

Megaworld Corp. to invest P20B in Iloilo City

Another multi-billion investment is set to kick off in this city with the groundbreaking ceremony for the development of the 54.4-hectare property of the Megaworld Corporation here this May 6.

The firm will be investing around P20 billion from the period 2011 to 2020.

Lea Lara, executive director of the Iloilo Business Club (IBC), disclosed that no less than Senator Franklin Drilon made the announcement during the launching of the network of partnership for better infrastructure here recently.

“Megaworld has expressed to him that they will make Iloilo as base of their real estate development. As what Ayala made in Cebu they will do it for Iloilo,” she said.

The property will host two buildings that are intended for business process outsourcing (BPO) companies and Richmond Hotel.

“Hopefully all these things will come for Iloilo. In terms of jobs, in terms of quality of service it’s going to be a major impact in our economy. The attractiveness of coming here is very concrete; the business climate, the business environment here is really conducive,” Lara added.

Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the firm’s P20-billion investment for its major development is apart from investments that will be established by its locators.

“The P20 billion would provide us with lot of job opportunities and push the economy. If they are going to start 2011 then more or less by 2012 we can already feel the impact,” he added.

Megaworld in 2007 bought the 54.5-hectare property from the Philippine government for the price of P1.2 billion.

since the lopezes were finally able to trim down their debts to a manageable figure, coupled with higher profit generation, then maybe its about time for them to reexamine the feasibility of their planned shipyard once again? nugon to...

As of the moment, we can only see decent street name signs in Iloilo City Proper. The rest are either makeshift or doesn't conform with the standards that were set by the street signs in the city proper OR none at all.

Iloilo City, as a major city in PH, should have street signs (that are uniform
city-wide) to guide motorists, commuters, locals and even tourists.

These are just some of my proposals yet I hope we may have better street
signs in the future.

They have a different and uglier street signs posted in Jaro District. For such an opulent district, they don't have the budget for adding a little of aesthetics.

These are just some of my proposals yet I hope we may have better street
signs in the future.

Ilongga makes history as
Army’s 1st female general

ILOILO City – An Ilongga has made history by becoming the first female general in the Philippine Army’s 114-year history.

Fifty-four-year-old Brigadier General Ramona Palabrica Go, a native of San Dionisio, Iloilo, took her oath on Monday before President Benigno Aquino III along with dozens of other promoted senior military officers upon the recommendation of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Board of Generals.

Go finished her bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Central Philippine University in 1977.
“She is the first lady general of the Philippine Army who is a regular officer,” said Col. Antonio Parlade, spokesperson of the Philippine Army.

The military has had female generals in the past but they belonged to the technical service, serving as nurses.

“Call it courage, the dedication to serve, and the desire to make a difference, Brigadier General Ramona Go entered the profession of arms years ago and proved that in the place of men, a woman can shine,” Parlade said.

Go serves as the Army’s assistant deputy chief of staff for personnel.

Parlade said Go had previously been sent to combat assignments, at one time serving as commander of the Aviation Battalion under the Light Armor Division.

A month after finishing the officer candidate course at Women’s Royal in Australia, Go was commissioned into the service in January 1982.

She afterwards took up a number of military courses, trainings, and seminars, and also held major positions such as that of Army unit tactical officer and platoon leader of the Women Auxiliary Corps in Camp Aguinaldo.

Go also chaired a military tribunal that tried officers accused of infractions.

Previously serving as AFP adjutant general, Go was a recipient of the Ulirang Ina award by the National M & F Day Foundation Inc.

Go also has a master’s degree in Development Management at the Asian Institute of Management. (gmanews.tv)

I have tagged them on Facebook or maybe I can email this to sir Butch regarding it. Indeed, when I saw the Jaro street signs, I was horrified with it...daw wala guid ya ka-aesthetics guid...undermining its opulence it holds in Iloilo's society.

Anyway, basi magsiling naman sila nga, "ina? its such a waste of money. pila lang katuig guba naman na, kawaton pa sang iban. better look for sponsors for that project." Then we'll see these street signs, with "Iloilo Supermart" logos on it (I have nothing against Que, its just that I guess they have the most number of street signs with logos). This is not PPP already, its an obligation of the city to place such for the public's interest.

How do you sell Iloilo City

By: Ben Jimena

OFTENTIMES we ask ourselves, what is there to find in Iloilo City? Or why would visitors come to the place which seems to have nothing interesting to offer? It does not have much of natural wonders except for its river. No waterfalls, no nearby mountains, no hot spring, no caves. Villa beach is black sand.

In the past, we tried to package Iloilo City as a heritage destination. Photos of old baroque churches, antillan mansions, huge pre-Hispanic commercial buildings have been ubiquitous in postcards and other promotional collaterals for Iloilo City which was labeled heritage city.

The heritage branding however did not somehow click and take off. Iloilo City remains in the sideline.

If one is interested in heritage houses, there is Vigan in the Ilocos Region. Though there are many old architectural structures scattered all over Iloilo City – from its Central Business District and the Chinatown triangle in the City Proper, the vintage structures dot the outskirts of Jaro and Molo; yet it is Vigan’s short strip which is top of mind of travelers. There is one UNESCO-picked Miag-ao Church but it is located about 40 kilometers south of the metropolis. There are other magnificent churches such as the Jaro Cathedral and the St. Anne Church in Molo, but they still pale in comparison to the grandeur of the better known century-old edifice of San Sebastian and San Agustin churches in Manila. So if one is to look at heritage, would he still go for Iloilo City?

Positioning Iloilo City as heritage and culture has failed to make it a premier tourist destination. We were never part of the Department of Tourism’s Top 8 tourist-drawers. We have never been a priority in terms of promotions. We were categorized as second-rate destination. It was difficult to sell the “old” Iloilo City!

Why is this so? Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim during his visit as guest speaker for the General Membership Meeting of the Iloilo Business Club had mentioned that the visitors’ negative perceptions of the country are difficult to counter. He cited that Japanese still think that the country is still a 3-D – disorderly, dirty, and dangerous. So that despite efforts to project Iloilo City as heritage site (our tourism promotional poster has either a photo of a mansion with a sprawling green front yard or that of an old stone church), we failed to rouse interest.

Most of the identified heritage structures are poorly maintained. They have not seen repair nor touched paint. They are just left to look old and rotten as if heritage is synonymous to such. The façade has cracks, its frontage has makeshift stalls of the sidewalk vendors. How could you call this attraction?

There are other branding options such as Sports and Adventure. Iloilo City could play host to sports events that could utilize existing gymnasium and swimming facilities. There is the Iloilo Sports Complex with rubberized track and field oval, ball courts and covered gym for indoor games. There are school gymnasiums around the city. But it’s only up there - the usual and the common which other places could also offer. Nothing exciting, no extreme sports challenges to pump up more adrenalin and spark curiosity. We were only up to hosting national sports meet occasionally; we could hardly remember the last time there was an international sports show in Iloilo City. No local sports organizations seem to have the guts and the savvy to mount this kind of competition. Where are the local moneyed sports enthusiasts or daring event organizers who should be investing in these endeavors?

Most of the adventure sports could be relegated to the rural areas like Guimaras and other Iloilo towns with elevated terrains. Iloilo City does not have the natural landscape to accommodate such kind of activities, it could only serve as gateway for these adventure destinations. The northern Iloilo towns of Ajuy, Banate and Concepcion could offer island-hopping tours including spelunking and diving. The present popularity of zip lines could probably interest investors to set up facility in the hilly topography of Guimaras. Nowadays zip and rappelling are not just exclusive for the boondocks because wherever there is altitude gap, these activities could very well be operated.

To market Iloilo City as Festival Capital is not a problem except for a fact that it is just a seasonal thing. Dinagyang which has been getting both national and international attentions happens on the fourth Sunday of January; the Paraw Regatta sailboat race on the third Sunday of February. These annual celebrations have brought a significant number of visitors from all over the globe. Both have been adjudged as the Best Tourism Events by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines. Dinagyang was cited as a Best Practice for Private-Public Partnership by the Asian Development Bank and the United Nations Development Programme; because by all indications, Dinagyang has surpassed the parameters of what a premier festival is made of. But then, they just happen in the first two months of the year.

Although there are about more than a dozen other exciting festivals from the towns of Iloilo Province which come for the rest of the year, these events have yet to be developed to be world-class so that we could sustain a year round supply of this genre.

Iloilo City has been a popular choice for national conventions of government agencies, civic groups, religious associations, academic societies, and professional organizations. A medical association like the Philippine Urological Society will come for their mid-year conference this April 2011. Many local government units had scheduled their “lakbay aral” during the past months and we are expecting members of PHILTOA for Travel Exchange with local travel and tour operators and familiarization tour on April. The Philippine Society of Science Clubs is also holding its national congress here in the City very soon.

As a destination for MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions), Iloilo City has established a good track record especially in the hosting capabilities of Ilonggos; although this was devastated and crippled by that infamous Perimeter Boundary Ordinance which did not allow out-of-route public utility vehicles and big buses to enter the City. It was a nightmare for travel and tour operators who carry big groups of visitors and it has created a big blow to tourist arrivals. Lately, however, some remedies were introduced to loosen the restrictions to accommodate visitors into the metropolis.

As an emerging MICE destination, the City Tourism and Development Office presents Iloilo City as a F.I.E.S.T.A zone. It’s a place where you could have Fun, tasty Food, spectacular Festivals, quality Fabrics, and nice Fine crafts. Infrastructures are in place – modern airport of international standards, and network of well-maintained roads. Ilonggos are Engaging hosts – hospitable, courteous, warm and happy people. The city is Safe and Secure. Our Track Record speaks for the satisfaction of all those who come to visit the City. In 2010, we hosted fourteen national conventions aside from many regional conferences and local seminars. We have at least twenty-seven flights a day served by all the major airlines in the country. Iloilo City is also linked to the roll-on-roll-off (RORO) nautical highway making the place easily Accessible by all modes of transportation.

And talking about food, we have earned the distinction to be home of the best tasting foodstuff and delicacies. La Paz Batchoy is a popular hot noodle concoction which the visitor should not miss; otherwise his or her experience of Iloilo would not be completed. Biscocho, barquillos, pinasugbo, butter scotch are the usual take-home pasalubong items. There is abundance of the sweetest and most succulent fresh fruits – mangoes and melons; of seafood – crabs, shells, prawns, fish, and oysters. There is a variety of grilled chicken preparations from old favorites like Tatoy’s and Breakthrough’s – two of the more popular seafood restaurants along Villa Beach. Even PNOY had publicly endorsed the “manamit” foods of Iloilo during his first presidential visit last April 1 for the inauguration of the coal-fired power plant here. Airphil Express has even labeled Iloilo as its Food Tripping route.

The prospects are very promising. Funds are coming in: the P150-M Iloilo River Esplanade courtesy of Senator Franklin Drilon, and the P10-M LGSP tourism promotion package for MIGEDC. The P20-B Megaworld project will have its groundbreaking next month. A solar energy source is in the offing. With these options and prospects, our hopes are high for Iloilo City to become a premier tourist destination by 2015.

^^I like this post of Ben Jimena. With the help of Senator Frank, Mayor Jed and the business society, Iloilo River will be a tourist haven. Watch out, we can sell Iloilo City now to the tourists.

How do you sell Iloilo City

By: Ben Jimena

The article tackles well the limitations imposed by existing situations. Heritage and the old Iloilo never clicked because of poor maintenance of the vintage structures. My own observation is a two-pronged approach to selling the place. Qutsiders must really get the point that Iloilo is a modern city with a charming heritage. With this approach, efforts to walk our talk with well-maintained and preserved heritage sites co-existing pleasantly with modern developments should capture the attention of an otherwise disinterested but prospective tourist.

After taking care of the blue collar aspect, marketing efforts should magnify it. A big part of selling is about customer perception (that's why I love being in sales because of recreating that perception time and again). Catchy one-liners being played over and over again could be one. With eclectic spontaneity, my own wannabe one-liners are:

Iloilo: Romancing the past in modern times/style.

Iloilo: Cutting edge. Historically hip

Iloilo: Where the sweet tongue speaks of the sweet life

Iloilo: City of Love for old and new.

For Iloilo, the hard work has just begun. Well, in many aspects, haphazardly if I may add.

anyway, good night folks!

Yes, I saw it - blue, but I'm not sure cause the ones I remember I saw in international cities I've been to, they were all green background. Wala ako sang nakita nga blue.

And for the red district, siguro not as a street sign. Another is if there will be signs to use to identify the red district, it appears there is discrimination. . . which should not be.

Okay man ang blue color, but I prefer green though. And last but not the least is the re-installation of Traffic Light, some roads don't have Road Markings yet, Speeding Limit should be implemented, amo ini ang DAPAT i-apply guid subong kay ang aton nga ciudad nagadaku na guid!:)

Tahum! :applause::applause::applause:
My take: The font choice is great! Readable!:)

Color: Blue is okay but IMO, green is better as it is relaxing to the eyes and cool. :okay:

Over all the design is AoK!

Hopefully our beloved city will adapt this scheme. Also, Traffic Lights please!:okay:

Ilongga makes history as
Army’s 1st female general

ILOILO City – An Ilongga has made history by becoming the first female general in the Philippine Army’s 114-year history.

Fifty-four-year-old Brigadier General Ramona Palabrica Go, a native of San Dionisio, Iloilo, took her oath on Monday before President Benigno Aquino III along with dozens of other promoted senior military officers upon the recommendation of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Board of Generals.

^^Another first in the Philippine history. Congratulations, I hope indi ka mangin corrupt.

How do you sell Iloilo City

By: Ben Jimena

....

^^I like this post of Ben Jimena. With the help of Senator Frank, Mayor Jed and the business society, Iloilo River will be a tourist haven. Watch out, we can sell Iloilo City now to the tourists.

^^
I so love this article! :)

It is an honest to goodness assessment on how we can improve our tourism thrust and what needs to be done. It clearly tackles our areas for improvement as well as our strength. It also hightlights the problems that we are dealing with our heritage conservation.

With this, we can formulate effective strategies and tackle our demons by the horns. Why it didn't work before and why it should work now. Policies that matters should be the number 1 agenda, next is we should enforce strict implementation of these 'guidelines' and lastly... as pointed out in the article... the necessary FUNDS are in place. This is the fuel needed to make the machinery work as it should be.

Now, we can sit back and wait... hopefully this time they won't bungle up the job. :)

Americans dominate moto-x trials
ILOILO CITY. – Dennis Stapleton led a mighty 1-2-4 American finish in the trials of the International Open side of the 2011 World Motocross Series on Saturday at the Sta. Barbara race circuit in Barangay Kamambogan, Sta. Barbara town.

Stapleton, riding a 450 cc Honda racing bike, beat countryman Tiger Lacey and local bet Glen Aguilar in a mad race to the finish to earn grid position in the final of the centerpiece event of the two-day classic.

Another American campaigner, Jacob Locks, ended up fourth as riders from the United States threatened to dominate the 12-lap event being held in a 1.2-kilometer circuit here.

Hundreds of motocross enthusiasts watched as some 200 participants in 20 categories displayed their skills in hurdling obstacles as the double jump, double jump and the most difficult hoop deuce.

In the end, it was Stapleton who emerged the best, beating the International Open, including brothers Daniel and Kai Sedlak of Germany. A 2007 Dubai Motocross champion, Daniel, 22, finished 13th.

Aguilar, 36, coming out of a nearly two year self-imposed retirement, emerged the brightest hope for the Philippines in the absence of fellow Golden Wheel Awardee Donark Yuzon and Jayvee Saulog.

Yuzon withdrew at the last minute due to illness while Saulog showed up with his left arm in a brace after a recent accident.

Aguilar, the pride of Las Pinas City and riding a 35 cc KTM bike, met the challenge provided by the foreign competitors and thrilled the predominantly pro-Filipino crowd with his spectacular stunts.

"Medyo kinakalawang pa pero laban pa tayo sa second heat. Hindi pa tapos ang karera at manipis lang ang lamang ng kalaban," said Aguilar, a former Asian champion and a 12-time Philippine Pro Open winner who retired in 2008.

How do you sell Iloilo City

Kulang man guid. And speaking on today's situation of the heritage areas, its simply not enough. Given also that our local tourists would prefer something "new" and they don't have that much background on the history of Iloilo (or were they sleeping on their history classes again?), these are not enough--as of now.

If Calle Real is revived to its prime like any centro historicos, then it should start having a facelift (I mean renovations, not demolitions).

I still firmly believe that the city without its old centro is a city without a character, a distinct soul on its own.

Heritage is there, but not enough. That means we have to include more than just your usual heritage. Iloilo City cannot be simply defined as food por solo, fiesta por solo. It has to sell the whole of it.

Hmmm, save me up from DOT promotion though...I've seen countries who are also having "danger" yet they still maintain good PR. I wonder what makes Philippines fail in its PR for tourism? Hmmm...

Most of the identified heritage structures are poorly maintained. They have not seen repair nor touched paint. They are just left to look old and rotten as if heritage is synonymous to such. The façade has cracks, its frontage has makeshift stalls of the sidewalk vendors. How could you call this attraction?
Agree. :okay:

Heck, even Iloilo Sports Complex is not enough. For a football savvy locale like Iloilo, its facilities are not at par with "international standards" yet.

Also, within Iloilo City, I guess the best thing we can do is row your boat at Iloilo River...now why doesn't have any people thought about water-related sports utilizing Iloilo River? Is it because, like the Japanese, the local or perhaps the common perception, that Iloilo River is still dirty and "the largest CR?"

Nowadays zip and rappelling are not just exclusive for the boondocks because wherever there is altitude gap, these activities could very well be operated.'

I was thinking, what if we can zipline from one side of Iloilo River to another?

Reminds me of that advertising at GMA-6. Bantayan Festival, the "world-famous festival." Then ask any Manileño where it is held, then they scratch their heads.

Indeed, they may be our crowd drawer yet it is not enough.

I'll be waiting for a big convention center for us to accommodate bigger conventions someday...soon. MICE in Iloilo wouldn't be optimized if we have better hotels and better facilities to accommodate an increasing number of visitors visiting our city.

@Whyte, pitch in our idea na! :okay:
Tani makaistorya kami ni Sir Ben sa maabot nga Aliwan.

Indeed. However, I am still suspicious about that solar power thingy. The local news reported that they have been investing in energy for 10 years. However, in their website, they are a media consultant firm.

Did I just saw Prince Golez there? :D

In the city where I live at now, green man ang backgrounds sang street signs, ang speed limit is black for night and white for day. Wala ko kabalo kung international standard ang green. Pero nami ang gin-design ni Habagat. I'm already liking it.:)

Green and blue are the acknowledged internationally as a standard for street sign colours. I just made it blue based on what I see in Quezon City which is so far, IMO, has the best street name signage in Metro Manila. Let me do a green one too.

Color: Blue is okay but IMO, green is better as it is relaxing to the eyes and cool. :okay:

Good day everyone. Batian ko lang kagina sa interview kay Mayor Jed sa RMN nga si Injap mapatindog 3 condominiums here in the city. Bal-an na naton ang duha; the on going construction of the people's condo and the 21-storey condotel accross SM City Iloilo. The 3rd one is across UP Visayas kuno. I don't know if it's gonna be beside the "stand alone" Jollibee or the vacant lot across PAg-IBIG.

Ayala is going to build another building and may theme park daw likod sang SM na iconstruct(daw indi man to iya sang sm so i guess, the sm expansion is different from this theme park thing).

^^
Ay abaw GOOD MORNING gid nga tood-tood. :):colgate::D

My take on the news:

RE Injap 3rd Condo

Na mention kung san-o ma groundbreak? How tall or how many floors?
We have the HH before regarding Injap purchasing a lot in front of UPV Iloilo City Campus (candidates are the lot occupied by Caritas Healthshield or the vacant lot beside it and the area occupied by a used car dealer). Now, its just a matter of time before Injap launch a new condo project. Sus kanami lang ah. Balantayan naman ini. :okay:;)

Hmm why is it that the lot adjacent to Gaisano City wasn't even mentioned? Could it be that Injap has a different plan on that? Also we must take note that that area near Gaisano City is still part of Iloilo Esplanade [according to the news, Iloilo Esplanade spans from Carpenters Bridge in Molo to Drilon Bridge in Lapaz... so in essence *it is the terminal part of the Iloilo Esplanade.]

*(the now defunct Bucay's Grill's lane & V-hire for Dumangas Terminal etc)

RE AYALA another building

Would that be the 2nd building for Ayala Technohub Iloilo? :D
Or is it the upcoming condo project (Avida Towers?) ;)
Again, balantayan naman ini. :D

RE THEMEPARK at the BACK of SM

Daw mayo haw? Is it the planned Theme Park for MW? Or is this a different one entirely? 2 themeparks in the offing? Daw mayo haw?

Hmmm I wonder if that IS related to the photo posted by Samwise wherein there is a white buidling near MW Property. Could it be? :)
Balantayan naman ini (plus the rumored expansion of Sm City Iloilo at the back area.) :D

RE SOLAR POWER

Hopefully we will have more info in the coning days as this is very PROMISING for Iloilo's power stability, reliability and affordability! :okay:

RE NOVIE

Yup, mayo kung puro PROJECTS ang topic kaysa non-stop politicking! :bash:

Kadamo lang balantayan ah. Pulupanihol ta anay ala True Blue. :D

Maayong aga sa tanan. :D

I see. Thanks for the info @ Bernie.

It seems BLUE is better if compared side by side. :okay:

Hopefully our great Mayor JPM would highly consider this scheme. :okay:

Iloilo City can be a ‘City of Hope’

AS a dynamic city, Iloilo City seemed to have lost its luster and vibrancy.

The problem of over the explosion of informal settlers and the urban poor sector looming like a giant cloud overshadowing whatever little light of progress one can see.

Urban blight is fast covering the city landscape and there is no blueprint how to address this gnawing social problem.

Cong. Jerry Treñas was mayor for nine years but there was no dramatic change that can be pinpointed as his accomplishment. Nine years is a long time and much could have been done.

But what we see is a growing squatter population, an urban plan, virtually nothing at all.

Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog is way into his first year and his term will soon be over for all we know. Now, we are all waiting with bated breath for some dramatic action that will jolt us and make us see and feel that some new and beautiful possibilities will happen.

But there seems to be none in the offing except for the perfunctory functions we see him doing every day.

They say it’s too early to judge Mabilog’s administration, but maybe it’s about time we have some glimpse of Iloilo City in the next five years as envisioned by the present leadership. For how would one call a leadership lacking in foresight, imagination, creativity and activism? Being inutile by any other name is still the same.

As for Treñas, a second coming might not augur some growth for Iloilo. He had a full nine years and look, we are still in the doldrums.

Iloilo needs new, dynamic and creative political leaders who will steer the city to towards growth and development so it can reclaim its economic supremacy as a leader-city in the South.

It needs a new breed of men who will intimately know the problems and would be willing to give anything and everything to solve these problems.

Iloilo City needs men who have new concepts of leadership: that leadership is sacrifice, supreme sacrifice forgetting oneself, forgetting the comforts of life, forgetting all intentions of getting rich while in office, forgetting the politics of power but embracing politics for the powerless.

Iloilo City needs men and women who will immerse themselves in the problems of the poor, who will understand the roots of poverty, who has a deep understanding of the conflicts in society.

Iloilo City needs men and women who are willing to give and not just receive – to really give until it bleeds, to consider the political leadership as a vocation,; to lead as Gandhi led – without a shirt on his back nor riches to his name but with all the noblest intentions deeply rooted in his soul.

Iloilo City needs a leader that is creative, a leadership that can entice big business investors to come to Iloilo, a leadership that has an economic blueprint -- a blueprint for a three-year term.
Most of all, Iloilo City needs a leadership that can inspire, that can fire the people’s imagination, that can give hope to those who see only dark horizons before them.

Then Iloilo City will not only become a progressive and dynamic city. It will be known as the City of Hope where inhabitants live decent and honorable and abundant lives.

Too high an exepectation? Not really because on the sides are men and women who are not trapped in the narrow straits of party politics. There are decent men and women who are just waiting for the right moment and the right atmosphere to give themselves to this concept of leadership.

Then we can truly say that Iloilo City is a city of hope./PN

Lopez Group eyes projects in Iloilo City

ILOILO City – The Lopez Group of Companies chaired by industrialist Oscar Lopez is keen on putting up major development projects in this southern city, according to Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.

Rafael Alunan of Adtel and Lopez Group recently paid Mabilog a visit to inquire on the possibility of conducting businesses here.

Mabilog said Alunan assured help in negotiating and convincing the landowner of an area in Brgy. Loboc and Bo. Obrero to sell or allow development of a vacant lot there into an industrial estate and export processing zone.

Alunan said he would talk with the landowner – the Valderrama family based in Negros Occidental -- to realize the project.

Mabilog said Alunan also wanted to provide potable water for residents of the Uswag San Isidro Subdivision, formerly the San Isidro relocation site in Jaro, Iloilo City.

The relocation site is starting to expand with several housing units subdivided into villages.

Among the donors are the Gawad Kalinga, Habitat for Humanity, Panay Electric Company, the government of Italy, former Cong. Raul Gonzalez Jr. and CLIFF and Homeless Peoples Inc.

Mabilog said that by June next school year, a school will be established for Grades 1 to 3 inside the subdivision.

A concrete road was constructed while two passenger jeepneys will soon ply in the subdivision.

Similarly, electrical posts are being set up for the more than 1,000 houses of relocatees from 23 city barangays.

The urban poor relocatees are composed of families living in danger zones such as riverbanks and creeks, typhoon victims and those ejected by private landowners. (PNA)

Stakeholders pool resources to address
Iloilo, Guimaras bioregion concerns

ILOILO City – A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed here between local government units (LGUs), various government agencies and a Canadian-backed organization sealing a partnership to address environmental and economic challenges in the Metro Iloilo-Guimaras (MIG) bioregion.

The signatories agreed to work collaboratively to develop:

* Tigum-Aganan State of the Watershed Report to raise public awareness on environmental issues and metrics within the bioregion;

* Tigum-Aganan watershed management strategy to promote conservation and restoration efforts, guide land development, limit urban sprawl, preserve food lands, improve access to clean water, and advance sustainable local economic development within the MIG Bioregion; and

* MIG Bioregion Disaster Management Strategy to strengthen the region’s disaster preparedness, response, and mitigation measures in the context of climate change adaptation.

Signatories to the agreement were the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Metro Iloilo Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC), Tigum-Aganan Watershed Management Board (TAWMB), the provincial government of Iloilo and the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI).

Andrew Farncombe, vice president for international partnerships of CUI, signed the MOU in behalf of the agency.

The project aims to:

* improve equity of access by citizens and communities (women, men, and youth) in the MIG bioregion to local government planning and decision making;

* build the skills of local governments, civil society and private sector groups in the MIG bioregion in participatory watershed/bioregion planning and management, public administration, and governance, disaster risk management, and local economic development; and

* share and encourage partners and other urban actors in the Philippines, Canada and internationally to upscale project-based initiatives and practices.

The MOU is in effect until March 2013. (PNA)

Aquino's nod sought on ferry terminal project

ILOILO City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog recently sent a letter of request and pertinent documents to President Benigno Aquino III in connection to the Guimaras-Iloilo Ferry Terminal (Gift) project.

Mabilog sought for a Presidential Proclamation of an area at Fort San Pedro envisioned to become the site for the ferry terminal project.

Post your online prayers for Japan earthquake victims

The mayor admitted talking to the President when the latter was in Iloilo City last April 1 to open the 164-megawatt coal-fired power plant.

The President advised Mabilog to send all documents to his office as he will take immediate action on the matter.

The city chief executive said the presidential proclamation will cover almost a hectare of land area currently occupied by the Philippine Coast Guard, the abandoned Rotary Park and the terminal for Buenavista, Guimaras pump boats. Squatters have already occupied a major portion of the park.

Mabilog said the squatters shall be relocated in the city's relocation site in San Isidro, Jaro, or at any relocation sites soon to be developed by the City Government.

The project is expected to upgrade and modernize sea travel from Iloilo City to Guimaras and vice versa, specifically the ports of Jordan and Buenavista.

A modern passenger terminal in Iloilo City will be constructed to serve the needs of pump boat passengers.

A project feasibility study was conducted and approved more than three years ago and the project is expected to be funded and assisted by the Asian Development Bank, German State Company of International Cooperation, formerly the German Technical Cooperation and the Cities Development Initiatives for Asia. I prefer the blue one. Green is alright but considering the trees around the roads, the sign may not be discernible.

Art Deco: Regaining lost memory
By SYLVIA L. MAYUGA
04/11/2011 | 07:29 AM

Tweet Caught in another traffic jam under a skyline of multiplying high rises, the eye wanders to the curlicued façades of dilapidated buildings and ornate balconies of old homes in the shadows of Manila’s LRT.

Wherefrom these grace notes amid the automotive shops, overseas employment agencies, moneychangers, towering hotels and apartment buildings, fast food chains and armies of vendors claiming streets and sidewalks in an impossibly overcrowded city?

The newly launched book Art Deco in the Philippines says they’re echoes and remnants of a richly creative moment in a brief hiatus of peace in the 1920s and ‘30s. A new global sensibility inspired by Egyptian, Aztec and African art had taken “the world by storm" in those “heady, adolescent days for the Philippines. It was the perfect vocabulary for the country to showcase the Commonwealth Era’s thrust to fall in step with the world and the 20th century," writes architect and cultural historian Augusto Villalon.

"Art Deco" is short for Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925, when this style of an age came in full display. Sweeping through architecture, sculpture, painting, dance, music, fashion and jewelry, it influenced even the design of the cars, radios and refrigerators of the day. Among its most famous children were Cubist art, Bauhaus architecture, and the avant-garde Ballet Russes.

Lyric Theater in Escolta, ManilaBorn from flowery Art Nouveau, classical Art Deco mutated into Streamline Moderne in the increasing speed, functionality and mass production of the day. Thrusting forward with the ocean liner, airplane and automobile, it soared upward in New York’s skyscrapers, making its grandest statements in the Rockefeller Center, Empire State and Chrysler Buildings.

A new generation of Filipino architects educated in Europe and America brought the Art Deco spirit home and gave it brilliant twists. Keeping its boxlike design and geometric lines, they instinctively evolved a “unique and stunning" tropical variant with native materials and craftsmanship, writes book editor Lourdes Montinola.

Light concrete and Philippine hardwoods of different shades and fragrances replaced the steel, aluminum and chrome of the West. Stylized tropical flora and fauna ornamented pillars, balustrades, staircases; ceiling murals, gates, doors and windows. Glass and grillwork took windows, doors, balconies and terraces beyond function into the realm of art. Stained glass set off exquisite plays of light. Capiz lent itself to the signature Art Deco innovation of indirect lighting, diffusing daylight glare and highlighting indoor decoration.

Recreated from recovered old photographs is the era’s most poignant architectural memory – the Crystal Arcade, a Streamline Moderne shopping center in Escolta fully articulated in glass by Juan Luna’s gifted architect son, Andres Luna de San Pedro. Thirteen years after its inauguration, bombs tied to its foundations by the Japanese army shattered a dream in glass.

Lost dream. Escolta's Crystal Arcade fully articulated in glass, designed by Juan Luna's architect son, Andres Luna de San Pedro
Another dream shattered in the battle for Manila was the Metropolitan Theater inaugurated in 1931. This two-winged classical Art Deco masterpiece designed by a young Juan Arellano had a stained glass façade; delicate indoor ornamentation and soaring outdoor sculpture matched by “impeccable acoustics and faultless lighting."

Could there be a more painful summary of collateral damage beyond the material than the three decades its ruins spent housing “a boxing arena, cheap motels, gay bars, a basketball court and squatters"? Its restoration by Juan Arellano’s architect nephew Otilio under Imelda Marcos’s aegis in the ‘70s failed to heal amnesia. Lack of support from both the public and officialdom closed the Metropolitan again in 1996.

Restored façade of the Metropolitan Theater close to Manila’s Mehan Gardens.
Its roof is leaking today. Money is an obstacle to plans for a reopening but a more serious leak lies in Filipino memory. This can be cured only if “we reopen our eyes to the lifestyle of only a generation ago," advises Montinola. Then perhaps we can rediscover “the genius of our own artisans or recognize their artistic creations in our own homes or surroundings."

These words come vibrantly alive in the family home designed by the Philippine Art Deco pioneer Tomas Mapua. Twice blessed for surviving the war and becoming the family home of the creative Mapua-Lim siblings, this gem behind greenery in a grimy stretch of Pasay City was the perfect setting for the book launching. Valuing both architectural history and their visionary grandfather’s art, this clan not only maintains but continues to renovate a 77-year old ancestral home in its original spirit.

Ceiling mural in Mapua living room with rainbow, stylized Chinese clouds, and birds bordered by capiz-filtered light
A companion chapter, “Vito Cruz: A Former Art Deco Enclave in Old Manila," opens to the Art Deco-styled Rizal Memorial Coliseum and three-story homes designed by the future National Artists Juan Nakpil and Pablo Antonio. The surviving Hidalgo-Lim, Villaruel and Montinola homes are exemplars of legacy preserved against the enticements of real estate brokers in a high-rise day.

More Art Deco treasures in this book are the Far Eastern University complex; old Manila moviehouses; the public market, a curious boathouse and elegant old homes in Iloilo City, as well as early commercial buildings in Dagupan and Baguio Cities. Their presentday use invites the rest of the country to recognize and re-integrate their own extant treasures with modern times.

The City of Iloilo has a wealth of architectural legacies spanning almost two centuries, from the Spanish colonial period to Art Nouveau of the first decades of the 20th century to a treasure chest of Art Deco buildings from the 1920s to the '50s. One of its jewels is the public market built in the 1930s.

Grand old Art Deco homes now house banks in several provinces. Art Deco touches in many humbler homes are visible down the Maharlika Highway. A trumpeting pair of Streamline Moderne angels still welcomes travelers at the Quezon provincial boundary arch.

They’re pointing the way to another Art Deco enclave, Sariaya at the foothills of Mt. Banahaw. Here plantation owners’ homes are permanent records of how high-priced coconut oil bought beauty for the generations in the Commonwealth Era. The grandest of them, also designed by Andres Luna of the vanished Crystal Arcade, is the home of Natalio Enriquez in the full efflorescence of tropical Art Deco.

The Art Deco layer of Filipino memory simmers just below the surface. Its touch is recognizable in porthole windows, arches and grilled balconies of new homes and buildings in Manila and Cavite. We’ve lost precious memories with our original hardwood wealth. But this book can open eyes to vanished and blindsided graces Filipino ingenuity has begun summoning back to a far less aesthetic present. - HS, GMA News

Old prominent industrial Ilonggo family eyes projects in Iloilo City
April 10, 2011, 6:21pm

ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PNA) -– The Lopez Group of Companies chaired by industrialist Oscar Lopez is keen on putting up major development projects in this southern city, according to Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.

Rafael Alunan III of Adtel, Inc. and the Lopez Group recently paid Mabilog a visit to inquire about the possibility of conducting businesses in the city to spur development. The Lopezes are natives of Iloilo.

Mabilog said Alunan assured help in negotiating and convincing the landowner of an area in Loboc, Bo. Obrero to sell or allow development of a vacant lot into an industrial estate and export processing zone.

Alunan said he would talk with the landowners, the Valderrama family which is based in Negros Occidental to realize the project.

Mabilog said Alunan also indicated that the Lopez Group would like to provide potable water for residents of the Uswag San Isidro Subdivision, formerly the San Isidro relocation site in Jaro, Iloilo City.

The relocation site is starting to expand with several housing units subdivided into villages. Among the donors are the Gawad Kalinga, Habitat for Humanity, Panay Electric Co., the government of Italy, former Cong. Raul Gonzalez Jr. and CLIFF and Homeless Peoples Inc.

Mabilog said that by June next school year, an elementary school accommodating Grades 1 to 3 pupils will be established inside the subdivision. A concrete road was constructed while two passenger jeepneys will soon service routes benefiting the subdivision.

Tribu Pan-ay upbeat in the Aliwan Festival competition
by Elsa S. Subong

ILOILO CITY, April 10 (PIA) – Nothing is left to sheer luck or chance for Tribu Pan-ay, Iloilo’s entry to the 2011 Aliwan Festival, as they prepare for the competition.

Iloilo City Tourism Officer Ben Jimena said in a broadcast interview, that Tribu Pan-ay has been doing dry runs and rehearsing new features and styles for their performance during the festival set April 16-20 in Metro Manila.

Tribu Pan-ay is supervised by the Fort San Pedro High School and the multi-awarded grand champion of the Iloilo Dinagyang 2011.

Jimena said the tribe will be bringing 100 dancers, 60 drummers plus props men and support group, which will number about 300.

Jimena said rehearsals and all aspects of preparations have been rigid, including the props which will be shipped to Manila, Sunday, April 10, to give them ample time for setting up.

‘There will be no float this time, as our candidate for Miss Aliwan will be on the tribe’s smaller float and be part of the street dancing,”Jimena said.

This year’s Miss Dinagyang Samantha Marie Amparo is also upbeat in grabbing the crown, as the previous candidates, ended first runner up, Jimena added.

Jimena further said they have great confidence in Tribu Pan-ay, as it faces the big challenge of retaining the Aliwan Festival championship won by Tribu Paghidaet last year.

“We face even greater challenge as we learned that our style is being studied by other contenders and that Cebu and Leyte, previous champions, are returning to join Aliwan this year,” Jimena said.

Jimena said the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation and the Iloilo City government have given all out financial and moral support to Tribu Pan-ay.

Likewise, Jimena said Ilonggos in Manila will be wearing red T-shirts during the Aliwan Fiesta to signify support for the entries. (JCM/ESS/PIA-Iloilo)

SMC to raise fresh capital for its infra business

04/11/2011 | 12:16 PM

Tweet Diversified conglomerate San Miguel Corp. intends to raise fresh capital to fund its foray into the infrastructure business, among others, by selling common shares and issuing dollar-denominated convertible bonds.

San Miguel in a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Monday said the offering, part of which would come from shareholder Top Frontier Investment Holdings Inc., may amount to about $850 million. The dollar-denominated exchangeable bonds may be exchanged for common shares from treasury stock of the company.

"Proceeds from the Offer and the Exchangeable Bond Offer will be used by SMC for its infrastructure business, working capital and other general corporate purposes, and the Selling shareholder to repay advances from shareholders," the company said.

The shares will be sold in the local market while the bonds will be offered abroad outside of the US.

For the share offer, San Miguel has appointed Credit Suisse (Singapore) and Standard Chartered Securities (Singapore) as joint global coordinators and international joint bookrunners. International co-bookrunners include Goldman Sachs (Singapore) and UBS AG. ATR Kim Eng Capital Partners, BDO Capital & Investment Corp and SB Capital Investment Corp. are the domestic joint bookrunners.

San Miguel has earlier announced that it is buying 51 percent of the Universal LRT Corp., which was commissioned to build the Metro Rail Transit Line 7 that will run from Quezon City to Bulacan.

The conglomerate is also eyeing other investments in other light rail transit projects in Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Iloilo and a bullet train railway to run from Laoag to Bicol. -- CMA/OMG, GMA News

Iloilo cites contributions to culture
by Lilibeth A. French

ILOILO CITY, Apr 11 (PIA)--A local government unit, broadcaster, dance choreographer, author and arnis instructor will be cited for their contribution to the preservation and promotion of Ilonggo culture.

Governor Arthur Defensor named the awardees as the municipality of Pavia, broadcaster Herman Basbano of Bombo Radyo Philippines, dance choreographer Edwin Duero, author Dr. Lucila Hosillos and arnis instructor Melecio Balberde.

The municipality of Pavia will be awarded for launching the first municipal-based tourism event, the Carabao-Carroza Race, that planted the seed of tourism development in the province of Iloilo.

Basbano, who is now the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the AM Division of Bombo Radyo Philippines, initiated the Ilonggo Music Festival in 1986 that showcased the best of Ilonggo music and musical talents.

Duero will be recognized for documenting and showcasing the Hinilawod, Panay's longest epic through the Dagyaw Theater and Dance Company which he took to performances around the world and has received a lot of outstanding reviews.

On the other hand, Hosillos advocated the use of Hiligaynon through the Ilonggo Language and Literature Foundation, Inc, a work that earned her the award while Balberde, founder of the Combative and Sportive Arnis System in 2007, will be honored for advancing and popularizing Arnis, the Filipino Martial Arts, in its authentic form that led to the appreciation of the self-defense system by the current generation.

A committee created by Defensor through Executive Order No. 36 selected the awardees. The committee is chaired by Board Member Demy Sonza and members included Provincial Tourism Officer Gilbert Marin, Provincial Librarian Noemi Viejo, Provincial Archivist Carlos Sira, and Community Affairs and Public Information Officer Nereo Lujan.

Defensor will present the Plaques of Recognition to the awardees during the Fellowship Night that will culminate the 110th Semana sang Iloilo celebration on April 11 at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol lobby. (Capitol News/JCM/LAF/PIA-Iloilo)

JED: I’M NOT PERFECT
Mayor vows to listen
to public sentiments

By JEZZA NEPOMOCENO

ILOILO City – Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog vowed to be “more sensitive” to public sentiments and apologized to those he may have disappointed.

“I am not perfect but I am doing my best to address the concerns of our city,” he said over Reklamo Publiko radio-television program yesterday following a barrage of criticism for his perceived indecisiveness.

He was particularly referring to the demolition of Councilor Edward Yee’s restaurant that illegally stands on the Iloilo River bank.

Mabilog appealed for public understanding. He said he is barely nine months in office and being a first-time mayor, the past months had been a learning experience.

Yee’s Barbecue Park was partially demolished

on March 31.

Mabilog said Yee begged for a 30-day reprieve and he granted it out of compassion.

He said Yee promised to demolish his restaurant before May 4.

“Yee, as a councilor, is carrying the good name of this city. Kalaw-ay man sina nga nagapakilu-oy na ang tawo, lapak-lapakon mo pa (He was already begging for compassion...it’s not right to pin him down all the more),” Mabilog said.

He added: “Kun ang kontra ko sa pulitika nangayo sang pasaylo kag nag-ampo nga magsunod sa akon plataporma, ginapatawad ko gani, ini pa ayhan nga akon na gid mismo abyan (If I can forgive remorseful political enemies, more so a friend).”

Mabilog assured the public that the Iloilo River Development Project will not be delayed by the one-month reprieve he had given Yee.

“I reflect the image of the city as a mayor. I believe that a mayor with compassion and humility is one thing that could really reflect what a true Ilonggo is all about,” he stressed.

The Iloilo River Development Project, which aims to transform the arm of the sea into a tourist attraction, will start in June yet, he said.

Mabilog denied that Cong. Jerry Treñas pressured him to spare Yee’s restaurant from demolition.

“(Cong. Treñas) even advised me to continue with the demolition,” Mabilog revealed.

Ilonggo Sen. Frank Drilon recently said the multi-million Iloilo River Development Project could not proceed if illegal structures, including Yee’s Barbeque Park, remain on the arm of the sea.

But Drilon expressed confidence that Yee would remove his illegal structures. He said he supported Mabilog’s decision to give Yee another month to voluntarily dismantle his restaurant.

Drilon said he will make sure that the demolition of Barbeque Park will push through if Yee will renege on his promise.

“As a public servant, Yee should be the first to follow (the rule of law),” Drilon said.

Barbeque Park has been identified as an illegal structure on the Iloilo River by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Public Works and Highways. But Yee had been reluctant to demolish his restaurant.

The P150-million Iloilo River Development Project aims to transform the Iloilo River into a viable economic booster.

Yee understands very well the rationale behind the project because he is an urban planner, said Drilon.

As a city councilor, Yee ought to work for the city’s growth, Drilon added.

Yee is the chairman of the Sangguniang Panlungsod’s Committee on Zoning and Urban Planning, and vice chairperson of Committee on Environment and Ecology.

“If Yee will remove his structure early this May, it will not affect or delay our plans (for the Iloilo River). The designs are in place and soon, the bidding will take place,” Drilon said.

The construction of a 2.5-kilometer promenade from Treñas Boulevard in Mandurriao district going to Drilon Bridge in La Paz district will start by June or July this year, according to the senator.

The project is expected to be finished by December this year./PN

^^Just continue your good motives mayor Jed for Iloilo City's future and you will succeed.

‘Signature drive vs MIWD just a warning’

BY JEZZA NEPOMOCENO

ILOILO City – Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog vowed to be more decisive in his decision-making during yesterday’s Reklamo Publiko radio-television program.
But in the same show, he clarified that the signature campaign he launched for the abolition of the Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) was actually only intended to warn the water firm to shape up and not to outright get rid of the agency.
Abolishing MIWD would only be the city government’s last resort should the water district remain inefficient, most especially if it will fail to push through with its bulk water supply project, Mabilog clarified.
The bulk water supply project aims to bolster MIWD’s dwindling water supply.
“I don’t have any intention to abolish MIWD. The signature campaign is just a warning. Its Board of Directors and management have to put their acts together to provide this city with adequate water supply,” Mabilog said.
The bidding for the bulk water supply project has been delayed for more than a year already due to the conflict between the MIWD Board and management, lamented Mabilog.
The P1.3-billion project aims to add 30,000 cubic meters of water per day to the existing water supply of MIWD. It was first proposed in 2009.
MIWD only serves 20 percent of the total residents in this city. The rest depend on deep wells and water vendors.
“As the mayor of this city, it is my responsibility to protect my people. MIWD has failed to serve this city well. It’s time for us to act,” Mabilog said.
The signature campaign started Monday last week. It has now gathered half of the 100,000 target signatures, said Jeffrey Celis, officer-in-charge of city hall’s complaint desk.
Mabilog denied that the signature drive would eventually lead to the privatization of MIWD.
Should the abolition happen, he said he wanted to create a new and more reliable water district for the city.
The mayor was also open to the possibility of having a water district cooperative.
The Liga ng mga Barangay (LnB) chaired by Councilor Roberto Divinagracia is supporting the signature drive.
“Our barangay officials are 100 percent supportive of this campaign,” declared Divinagracia.
It was previously reported that after the signatures have been gathered, the petition seeking MIWD’s abolition will be submitted to Cong. Jerry Treñas, who in turn would introduce a bill in Congress seeking an end to the city’s sole water distributor.
Thursday last week, Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. said a signature drive would not be enough to abolish MIWD.
However, such campaign can be used as basis for the national government to consider shutting down the “low-performing and dysfunctional” water district, he said.
Presidential Decree (PD) 198 or the Provincial Local Water Utilities Act issued by then President Ferdinand Marcos established MIWD on June 11, 1978.
Defensor said Congress may abolish MIWD though it would require a “long and tiring process.”
Section 44 of PD 198 states that a “water district can be dissolved by a resolution of its Board of Directors filed in a manner of filing the resolution forming the district. Provided, however, to the adoption of any such resolution:
“(1) Another public entity has acquired the assets of the district and has assumed all obligations and liabilities attached thereto;
“(2) All bondholders have been notified and they consent to said transfer and dissolution; and
“(3) A court of competent jurisdiction has found that said transfer and dissolution are in the best interest of the public.”/PN

^^I hope there's no more second or third warning for MIWD.

A concrete road was constructed while two passenger jeepneys will soon service routes benefiting the subdivision.

there are 2 sugar centrals in Passi City and 1 in neighboring San Enrique town.

The Passi sugar centrals are CASA (owned by the brother of Jose Mari Chan- Steven Chan) and URC 2 (owned by the Gokongweis). The one in San Enrique town is URC 1 (also owned by the Gokongweis).

JED: I’M NOT PERFECT
Mayor vows to listen
to public sentiments

By JEZZA NEPOMOCENO

ILOILO City – Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog vowed to be “more sensitive” to public sentiments and apologized to those he may have disappointed.

“I am not perfect but I am doing my best to address the concerns of our city,” he said over Reklamo Publiko radio-television program yesterday following a barrage of criticism for his perceived indecisiveness.

....

^^
Mayor JPM, padayon lang! We support you all the way. We believe in you!:okay:

Hopefully aside from Gaisano Capital, IS will open as well.

Bus Terminal is above standard. Great Job Passi City for a clean, presentable & functional terminal in the truest sense. :okay:

Passi Sugar Central
Awesome perspective and shot.

Waswasi Passi! :banana::banana::banana:

Maayo pa ang Passi City, may initiative to make a decent bus terminal. In Iloilo City, although it may be PPP but that one P (private) is not keen in making a great bus terminal...daw "hay ah, basta may atup na, ok na ina ah!" Mediocre.

Good thing I heard that there are some construction going on there at Tagbac.

BTW, I heard from somewhere that this would be the last time Dinagyang would be joining Aliwan due to an "executive decision."

However, this has yet to be confirmed.

For those in the decison-making DON'T! It's the only stage where Dinagyang is getting the accolades it deserved and the fame. Plus more people are getting aware of what Dinagyang can offer as a feast for the eyes and the rest of the senses.

That's not yet confirmed. Although, from what I heard, the reason was "lack of returns" coming from investing too much money in Aliwan and would instead divert the funds somewhere to promote Iloilo City other than sending the whole contingent to Aliwan--based on last year's I think. Need to clarify it to Sir Ben though...we might have a meeting sometime this weekend together with Eric.

Anyway, the big boy festivals aren't there this year. MassKara, Sinulog, Ati-Atihan, Kadayawan and Panagbenga managed to survive and still become "a be seen event" without that much priority to Aliwan. Dinagyang has already marked its foot so much that one of the judges in Dinagyang said that they are afraid of it's "hegemony" as a primary cause of losing one's local identity other than Iloilo's.

In my opinion, I guess we should move on with sending Dinagyang year after year. There may be other promotional or marketing ideas in store other than that, IMO. Because for one, it has already gained momentum and has reached escape velocity and may well on go into orbit as planned. :)

Hmmm, no wonder Jed expressed his sentiment as "to listen more to the people." Atty. Gerochi is planning to have a signature campaign for a recall election due to "loss of confidence" by the public daw.

Read and you decide...

‘CLOSE TO IMPOSSIBLE’
Recall election doomed to fail?
BY JEZZA NEPOMOCENO | Panay News (http://panaynewsphilippines.com/headline.htm)

ILOILO City – Ousting Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog thru a recall election is “close to impossible,” said a barangay captain supportive of the city’s chief executive.

A group led by Atty. Romeo Gerochi is kicking off a signature drive for the recall election.

But according to Barangay Captain Sumakwel Nava of Brgy. Libertad, Lapuz, the only “powerful” group who can make such campaign succeed are the barangay captains.

They can influence their constituents, Nava explained.

However, majority of the 180 barangay captains here are supportive of Mabilog, said Nava.

The group seeking Mabilog’s ouster will thus be hard put to make their signature drive take off, he said.

For a recall election to happen, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) requires 25 percent of the total number of registered voters of an area to sign a petition calling for it.

In the case of Iloilo City which has a total of 242,032 registered voters from 180 barangays, the 25 percent means some 60,508 signatures.

In his barangay alone, said Nava, he doubted if the recall election campaigners can persuade even just two percent of his constituents.

‘PEOPLE’S CAMPAIGN’
Gerochi remains undaunted.

“The mayor may be influential but I am not afraid. Besides, it is not my call anymore. This is the people’s campaign,” he said.

Many have lost their confidence in Mabilog’s leadership, Gerochi told Panay News in a telephone interview.

The signature campaign for a recall election stemmed from Mabilog’s own indecisiveness, particularly on the issue concerning his political ally, Councilor Edward Yee, said Gerochi.

Mabilog had been reluctant to demolish outright Yee’s restaurant standing on the bank of the Iloilo River.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources had ruled that the restaurant was an illegal structure.

“I have nothing personal against the mayor although he annulled my appointment as a member of the interim Board of Directors of the Metro Iloilo Water District. This has nothing to do with the signature campaign,” stressed Gerochi, father of Mabilog’s ally in the Sangguniang Panlungsod, Councilor R. Leonie Gerochi.

The elder Gerochi confirmed that Mabilog had talked to him about the signature campaign for a recall election.

“The mayor knows how to fight it. I even told him that there is still time for him to convince the public not to sign the petition calling for a recall election,” said Gerochi.

Gerochi is confident of gathering enough signatures to push for a recall election.

After the required number of signatures has been gathered, the petition will be submitted to the Comelec, which in turn will verify the authenticity of the signatures.

Gerochi is confident that the recall election will materialize.

Just this Sunday, Mabilog vowed to be “more sensitive” to public sentiments and apologized to those he may have disappointed.

“I am not perfect but I am doing my best to address the concerns of our city,” he said over Reklamo Publiko radio-television program following a barrage of criticism for his perceived indecisiveness.

Mabilog appealed for public understanding. He said he is barely nine months in office and being a first-time mayor, the past months had been a learning experience./PN

On the other side, daw nakadlaw ko sa Lapsus Calami subong ah. A few months ago, we were hearing a lot from them regarding Panay News versus Lemuel Fernandez. Like Ynion before him, Fernandez has his own greeting from PN. :colgate:

TIDBITS | Lapsus Calami (http://panaynewsphilippines.com/lapsus%20calami.htm)
1) LEMUEL FERNANDEZ, publisher of The Daily Guardian, celebrated his birthday yesterday. It was indeed the loveliest day of the year.
A former editor of Panay News for almost 10 years, Lemuel is doing fine in his newspaper business. As we join to congratulate him on the occasion of his natal day, it is our fervent hope that his success will remain an inspiration to other members of the Fourth Estate.

and regarding your question about the Lopezes, here's PN's opinion...

WHAT HAVE THE LOPEZES DONETO ILOILO? | Lapsus Calami (http://panaynewsphilippines.com/lapsus%20calami.htm)
WE have been asked by many Ilonggos to mention the good things that the Lopezes have done to Iloilo.
Since the time of the late Vice President Fernando Lopez and his brother Don Eugenio Lopez, we have never seen any monumental achievement in terms of roads, bridges, school buildings, public infrastructures, edifices or economic layers of growth that make the Ilonggos proud of them.
“Bisan isa ka kalye daw wala gid sing nahimoan ina sila para sa publiko. Nada (They never constructed even just one street for the public),” Nanay Trining Hornada, who is nearing 90 years old, told Lapsus.
And many people agreed.
On the other hand, they became so rich through their high stations, power and influence.
History does not glorify them the way it does to other distinguished leaders who touched the lives of ordinary people and the general public.
They ate alone.

A concrete road was constructed while two passenger jeepneys will soon service routes benefiting the subdivision.

i like... pero, tani mas mayo if may concrete actions na. kasi untill now, it's still on paper. i just wish the lopez patriarch oscar would really contribute something to iloio's economic awakening. i bet ma benefit man da sila ah.

RCBC wealth manager nears P50 B in managed assets

(The Philippine Star) Updated April 12, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0) View comments

MANILA, Philippines - The Wealth Management Group of Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) is optimistic of hitting its P50-billion, five-year asset under management (AUM) target by end 2011.

It is presently managing P40-billion AUMs, or a 30-percent expansion from its 2009 position.

RCBC Wealth Management Segment head Manuel G. Ahyong Jr. explained that the industry outlook is positive as more Filipino investors are realizing how wealth management services can significantly augment their incomes.

“The Filipinos’ appetite for sophisticated means of growing one’s wealth, apart from traditional banking services, is really growing,” Ahyong said.

He said that the economic challenges arising from the natural and political upheavals overseas are directing more investors to look for safer havens locally in which to invest their funds.

“RCBC Wealth Management has done very well in creating a strong brand specializing in individually customized investment counseling, financial planning, tax and estate advisory and other special needs,” he added.

RCBC now holds wealth management offices in Greenhills, Quezon Avenue, Caloocan, Binondo, Makati and Cebu. It is mulling opening other sites in the cities of Iloilo and Davao.

Wealth management or private banking is a banking activity focused on nurturing high net-worth individuals, with a prospective minimum investment portfolio of P20 million.

Private banking allows individuals access to a pool of savings and investments instruments including savings accounts, time deposits or money market placements, foreign currencies, stocks, bonds, life and non-life insurance, trust products including unit investment trust funds (UITFs), real estate, managed funds, and other investment alternatives.

4threich, that's very insightful. I would like to comment on the part of "na intoan sa pagbakal". I just recently bought one and I know how to weigh the negatives as wells as the positives as to the opportunity cost of buying starbucks coffee. But to say "na-intoan" or fooled in English, I beg to disagree. I know very well what I'm buying and I intend to buy it anyway. Well, you're indeed right, its bad to call a brother dalok when indi man siya dalok, so as to call a brother "na-intoan kung wala man siya na-intoan". PEACE ON EARTH!

^^@zynet, wealth management is fundamentally the hiring of professional services to manage the financial portfolio of rich individuals or large corporations. as you grow richer, sophistication in the way you take care of your liquid (monetary) and non-liquid assets is needed. wealth managers are hired to do just that. wealth management is frequently utilized by multi-millionaires, billionaires, or large institutions. if a place has several wealth management houses, then that means its economy is indeed developing to a level of complexity where requirements for various professional financial services (such as wealth management) are indispensable.

Don't worry 4threich I now completely get your point. Just that it seems to me that I'm the main target of that Starbuck's comment, when you posted just soon after I finished posting Starbuck's pics. For I moment there, I felt "na-intoan", but in the end I have to agree with your last statement. ITS MY CHOICE...
