‘Don’t privatize Iloilo River Wharf’

SEVEN business groups in Iloilo City want the operation of the Iloilo River Wharf (IRW) to remain under government control through the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA).

These business associations came up with a collective stand on the plan to return the IRW to private management after a consultative meeting Sunday.

These groups, represented by their respective presidents, include the Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Iloilo, Inc. (FCCCI-Iloilo) led by Felipe Uygongco; Iloilo Shipping Operators and Allied Service, Inc.’s under Cesar Ting; Federation of Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Panay, Inc. (FCCC-Panay) headed by Henry Chusuey; Iloilo Multi-Sectoral Business Association under Fanny Uy; Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Iloilo, Inc. under Angel de Leon; Ilonggo Producers’ Association led by Valerie Maravilla; and Iloilo Business Club, Inc. (IBC) under Antonio S. Jon.

Earlier, reports came out that an influential Ilonggo leader is backing the bid of a prominent family to regain control of the wharf.

The plan sent shivers to businessmen who feared the return of extortion activities at the IRW.

The planned privatization became obvious when the Police Regional Office 6 relinquished control and supervision of Task Force Waterfront to the Iloilo City Police Office.

But the Ilonggo business community sent a letter dated August 28, 2006 to Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Leandro Mendoza asking him to retain PPA control of the IRW.

In a copy of the letter obtained by The Guardian, the Iloilo business leaders highlighted the “favorable business atmosphere” resulting from the PPA’s management of the river wharf.

“For the last two years that the PPA has been operating the Iloilo port, the climate has become more business-friendly and professionalized. Port policies became transparent and service charges were more consistent and predictable,” the businessmen stressed.

The business community also attributed the positive development to the presence of police force that secured the wharf from criminalities, particularly extortion rackets.

“The law and order prevailed and doing business became smooth and efficient. The cost of doing business in Iloilo drastically went down,” the traders pointed out.

According to the business groups, the IRW under the PPA has also been attracting prospective shippers.

“More vessels came to dock at the Iloilo port and many businessmen from other areas started to seriously consider investing, as they did invest, because the port has become a plus-factor in doing business here.”

The business leaders asserted that a government-supervised port system should be retained as it creates a “smooth-sailing” flow of trade in Iloilo.

“We thought that this was the kind of operation that ought to characterize the government’s commitment to efficiency and good government – and the kudos for running such an exemplary service really goes to the concerned administration,” the top business executives wrote Mendoza.

However, the prime movers in the industry “were surprised that while PPA is doing so well,” there is a move to privatize the IRW operations.

“Sadly, this is a matter of ‘trying to fix something that isn’t broken’. We believe this does not give (PPA and DOTC) the credit it deserves for the job that has been well-done during the past two years,” the businesses expressed objection to the plan of giving out the IRW to a private group.

“While transportation is a vital aspect of doing business and with PPA running the port, it has satisfied us customers,” the business leaders asserted.

^^Beautiful Iloilo! Congratulations! :)Just curious, is Ilonggo heavily influenced by Spanish (more than Tagalog/Cebuano)? Or Iloilo just acknowledges its hispanic culture unlike many other Filipinos?

cosmoManila,

The title "La Muy Leal y Noble Cuidad de Iloilo." in Iloilo's Coat of Arms given by Spain's Maria Cristina was an acknowledgement of their stance toward the rebellion happening in Manila back in 1896. To Ilonggos, it was unpatriotic. It just shows how heavy the spanish influence were in those days especially the large ruling mestizo class or ayuntamiento of both Jaro and Iloilo where most prominent Ilonggos of Iloilo today and Bacolod originally came from. There is no shame in this. People need to look through their eyes at that time. It wasn't clear cut black and white as it may seem. Nevertheless, I am glad that many Ilonggos show appreciation and acceptance of their hispanic past. You can clearly see that through her old mansions and buildings, streets, language and people.

I am not an expert but here is my view about it. The Tagalog language has Spanish words that are only used in the Tagalog regions and since the national language 'Filipino' is the same as Tagalog those words are also known and have fused with other languages in the Philippines. This would be an added plus for other Filipinos who speaks another languages like in the Visayas and Mindanao. That is why in my belief Cebuano and Ilonggo have more Spanish influence compared to Tagalog.

Great new thread too! :)

Revenue agency confers award to Ted's La Paz Batchoy owner

ON THE occasion of its 102nd anniversary, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) recognized business establishments and taxpayers who pay their taxes promptly.

One of them is Adelfa Borro, owner of Ted's La Paz Batchoy. The award of "First Top Individual VAT (Value Added Tax) Taxpayer" was conferred to her.

The ceremony was held at the BIR District Office in Molo last August 11.

The certificate that Borro received states, "In recognition for her grateful recognition with the various programs of the BIR. Legazpi's 5th Centenary Exhibit held at USA

THE University of San Agustin, the first university in Western Visayas, hosts the Western Visayas leg of the 5th Centenary of the birth of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi with an exhibit dubbed "Enduring Friendship/Amistad Duradera," that highlights the friendly, productive and historic ties between two great countries, the Philippines and Spain.

The exhibit is divided into several chapters: Evangelization; Government; Agriculture, Commerce and Communications; and Education.

It also chronicles the colorful life of Legazpi as a sailor and his adventurous voyage to the Spice Islands and his arrival to the Philippines, where he established the new Kingdom of Castille and the City of Manila.

The exhibit lasts until September 5, 2006 at the Mentrida Hall (University of San Agustin College Chapel).

Legazpi arrived in the Philippines in 1565, together with the five pioneering Augustinian Friars, Andres de Urdaneta, Andres de Aguirre, Martin de Rada, Diego de Herrera, Pedro Gamboa. His remains are entombed at San Agustin Church in Intramuros, Manila.

The exhibit forms part of the week-long activities of the University in celebration of the Patron Saint's Day.

The celebration also included the 5th Saint Augustine Lecture -- Memory, Interiority and Subjectivity: Explorations on Augustinian Modernity by Dr. Macario Ofilada, and, Augustine as a Theologian: Study of God at the Service of Man by Fr. Czar Emmanuel Alvarez, O.S.A. Other activities were as follows: St. Augustine Scholarship Contest; Palanublion: A University Velada; Sports Festival; Launching of Irong-Irong Student Literary Journal; Literary Musical and Dance Competition as well as Hataw Agustino -- a student variety show. Besides, the first peoples to be colonized by Spain were the Visayans (regardless of what region/island they may come) then they went up to Luzon later on after Legaspi sent his troops to Manila.

People like us coming from outside the Tagalog Region (where Tagalog is purely spoken per se) have the advantage of speaking three or more dialects or languages. We are more exposed to various dialects and languages than the Tagalogs. Learning another language enables us to learn their culture as well. True, the Spanish colonizers have left a deep impression in the Visayas and Mindanao.

:) Iloilo town holds festival to prove it’s safe to eat seafood

By Ma. Diosa Labiste
Inquirer
Last updated 06:24pm (Mla time) 09/01/2006

ILOILO CITY -- In a show of support for its beleaguered fishing industry, the coastal town of Dumangas in Iloilo province held a seafood festival Thursday to show that it is safe to eat seafood despite the oil spill from the sunken tanker Solar I.

The festival drew close to a hundred fish vendors and their "suki" (regular buyers).

The seafood spread of grilled bangus, shrimps, oysters, mussels and tilapia, among others, was held at the town's market and billed "Isda kag pakinhason safe kaunon (It's safe to eat fish and shellfish).”

At a signal, Dumangas Mayor Rolando Distura and other officials dipped their hands in a washbowl and helped themselves to grilled seafood. Soon after, everyone moved in to have his or her fill.

Dumangas, 35 kilometers north of Iloilo City, is one of the areas threatened by the oil slick from the Solar I. To prevent the oil from contaminating their shore and 4,500 hectares of fishponds, townsfolk installed booms made of rice straw, old fish nets and bamboos a mile offshore.

But while the local fishing industry remains safe from the onslaught of the oil spill, incomes have dipped significantly, according to officials and fishmongers.

Consumers fear that fish and shellfish are contaminated even if the recent advisory from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said fish caught in the open waters of Guimaras Strait and Panay Gulf is safe to eat.

"I've grown tired of visits of ‘tahong’ (mussels) vendors complaining that nobody was buying from them," said Distura.

He said that the seafood from Dumangas is safe to eat because near-shore fishing areas were not affected by the oil spill, at least for now. Besides, he said, there's no ban on fishing imposed by BFAR.

According to the BFAR and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) aquaculture department, the results of tests on various fish species caught in Guimaras Strait and Panay Gulf last week showed the fish negative for bunker fuel.

The BFAR advisory said that fish in open water can swim away or dive deeper, reducing the likelihood they will be harmed by the oil spill. However, near-shore sea creatures such as crabs, mussels, oysters, clams, burrowing organisms and fish fry are more susceptible to oil pollution if the spill reaches shore.
.
Fishermen are encouraged to go out into open seas free from the oil slick, where their fishnets won't be smeared by bunker fuel, said BFAR.

Other northern Iloilo towns like Concepcion and Ajuy have reported fishery losses due to oil reaching their shores, said Jerry Bionat, secretary of the provincial disaster coordinating council of Iloilo.

Bionat said that last Wednesday, Concepcion fishers scooped the equivalent of 27 gallons of bunker fuel from the sea about a kilometer offshore.

One of the things I miss in Iloilo is the roadtrips we used to do back there. I always look forward for that weekend escapade that we always do. Driving out of town is our way of unwinding. Our fave destinations are the islands of Concepcion (Pan de Azucar) and the Sira-an Hot Springs in Anini-y, Antique (at the southernmost tip of Panay). Circumnavigating Panay is tiring yet fun (Iloilo-Balasan-Pilar-Roxas-Kalibo-Malay-Buruanga-Libertad-San Jose-Hamtic-Anini-y-Tiolas, San Joaquin-Iloilo). I miss those days... :|

SM Supermarket inaugurates new store

SM Supermarket recently opened its 26th store in Jaro, Iloilo City.

Unlike any branch opening, the new store buzzed of charity and generosity from SM and its trade partners.

In a bold and generous move, SM Supermarket President Herbert T. Sy announced before officially opening Savemore to the public that the money from all purchases made by its trade partners shall be donated to the Jaro Parish Church.
Moreover, Mr. Sy encouraged guests to donate in kind to the Jaro Parish by purchasing grocery items from Savemore. After the event, P140,000 worth of cash and groceries were donated to the Jaro Parish. Furthermore, Savemore Supermarket is donating 2400 bottles of SM Bonus water to M/T Solar 1 oil spill victims in Guimaras.

As regards the donation, Monsignor Meliton Oso of the Jaro Parish Church has this to say: “It is a delight to know that establishments such as SM still put to heart the business of working for others and being of service to the community. We are truly grateful for the kindness SM has extended, all proceeds will go into aiding the impoverished and the church’s feeding program”.

tis is very very very true!!!

my officemates would wonder why i can speak/understand/read in english tagalog hiligaynon, kinaray-a and cebuano.

people from manila would often call us, promdi... So What? multi lingual naman kmi. we can easily talk to people from other provinces.

di ba? :)

To tell you frankly, it's much better to know so many languages rather than knowing one, because it can help you broaden your heights and horizons.

It is indeed true. Also, it avoids us being branded as "imperial."

Santa Barbara Church

This church, of Baroque Rennaisance architecture, was built in 1845 and was completed 33 years later. In 1898, it was made as the general headquarters and military hospital of the revolutionary forces called "Ejercito Libertador" against Spain in the Visayas.

The whole structure imposes simplicity and beauty. The facade is neoclassic, proven by twinned neoclassic pilasters and finials.

http://static.flickr.com/81/232818619_1a150f8848.jpg?v=0

The most interesting part of the church is the Convent which is made of yellow stand stone and bricks. The inner patio gives a view of ancient living and Hispanic life. circular pillars of bricks support the second level of the convent.

There are three altars on wings and the nave while a simple yet very decorated pulpit stands on the left side of the wall.

Mas kitaon ang vertical development ka iban nga ciudad kay tungod ang duta didto pataklad pakadto sa kabukiran- parehas ka Cebu.

Iloilo City's soil composition is mostly alluvial clay, deposited through time.

Iloilo is like Venice. As it somewhat floating. Its a main hindrance of constructing high rises in Iloilo. I think there was already a city ordinance that limits the height of the building in the city due to soil integrity. Limiting the construction of high rises to just 8-10 floors only, not unless pile driving will be utilized in high rises of Shanghai and Manila.

A skyscraper needs a solid foundation and in Iloilo, bedrock is several feet deep.

Swampy it may be but it is not a hindrance for the development of the city, for there are still more places to construct buildings not only in Iloilo City but the metropolitan suburbia as well (Pavia, Oton, Leganes, San Miguel, Santa Barbara and Guimaras).

Skyscrapers: Maybe not now, but later.

Pototan has a potential to become the 3rd city of Iloilo along with Calinog and Janiuay due to agriculture while Oton and Sta.Barbara too has potentials, now that the airport is due next year.

What I mean is that Iloilo's skyline is not pronounced since its location is relatively flat. I'm not talking of the utter lack of skyscrapers or the need of constructing of such structures. Most of the City Proper is reclaimed land and having a relatively soft soil is not an excuse of not having high structures. It's a matter of economics. Why build a skyscraper when there is no demand for it?

Now back to the original subject. Present vertical developments in the city can be more visible if the land is sloping up towards the interior portion of Iloilo. Structures such as the Medicus Condo Clinics, Iloilo Business Hotel, Iloilo Provincial Capitol, Foremost Milling Co., Jaro Bellfry and other vertical developments are not that visible because they are built on a flat area.

Since Iloilo is flat. Development seem to be concentrated only along the coastline when viewed from Iloilo Strait since one only sees the buildings near the coastline and not those in the inner portion of the city.

An example would be the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel (formerly Cebu Plaza) located on top of Nivel Hills, Cebu. Coming in from Mactan you can clearly see the hotel since it sits on top of the hill. Had it been built on a flat and inner part of Cebu, one won't take notice since it won't be that visible at all. Since Cebu is not flat, most building have the advantage of being visible from the sea. Be it high rise or medium rise.

Geography reminders:

Batiano River and Iloilo River cannot be one, because they have different headwaters; Batiano River's is somewhere deep inside Oton and Iloilo River's is along the Oton-Mandurriao border beyond Sooc.

The body of water between Iloilo City and Guimaras (where you can view Iloilo's skyline) is called Iloilo Strait, not Guimaras Strait. Guimaras Strait is the one between Guimaras and Negros.

DBP ready to support various projects in Iloilo

THE Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) recently discussed its priority projects in Iloilo with Governor Niel Tupas and some key clients.

DBP president and chief executive officer Reynaldo David said the state-owned bank wants to increase the share of its loans to 90 percent of its total loan portfolio as the bank gears up to become a more vital partner of the government in nation-building.

He also added that the DBP is ready to support the various projects bared by President Gloria Arroyo during her recent State-of-the-Nation-Address.

David also said that DBP is putting a premium on its flagship projects including the Sustainable Logistics Development Program (SLDP).

The SLDP aims to improve the infrastructure for the efficient movement of commodities, and to bring down the cost of goods, through a modern storage, handling, and transport system.

DBP is also prioritizing projects for public utilities such as power generation, water supply and distribution, and projects towards country development including schools, hospitals and airports. (PIA 6/ESS)

That's one theory. My professors back in college said that Batiano and Iloilo River are one. They merge in Poblacion Oton, just right behind the ruins of old Oton Church. Calajunan Creek on the other hand, like Dungon Creek, are somewhat tributaries to Iloilo River. The salinity of Batiano and Iloilo River is somewhat similar, and since there is a physical manifestation of merger between the 2 rivers, the theory is that the legendary Pulo sang Katagman is presently the City Proper all the way to Barangay San Antonio in Oton. :)

There is an ongoing study about Iloilo-Batiano River system by Prof. Funtecha.

GMA oks Iloilo-Guimaras economic dev’t council
By DAVID ISRAEL SINAY

ILOILO City – President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo approved the creation of the Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC), with the inclusion of Sta. Barbara town.

MIGEDC, formerly the Metro Iloilo Development Council, was conceptualized for the economic development of its members, with focus on tourism and infrastructure.

On August 28, 2006, Arroyo issued executive Order No. 559 creating MIGEDC composing the Iloilo City Mayor (as the chairperson), Governor of Guimaras (as co-chairperson), with the municipal mayors of Leganes, Pavia, San Miguel, Oton and Sta. Barbara, and the president of the League of Municipalities of Guimaras, as members.

The council shall focus on the delivery of basic services, environmental management, public safety and security, land use management, infrastructure development, and economic promotion and development.

Sta. Barbara has been included because it hosts the New Iloilo Airport and because of its being an inter-modal transportation link.

Arroyo said the MIGEDC must ensure appropriate coordination with the Regional Development Council and other relevant development councils in discharging its functions.

Also, the President directed all departments, bureaus, offices, agencies and instrumentalities of the national government, including government-owned and controlled corporations and government financial institutions, to extend full assistance to the MIGEDC in support of its programs, projects and activities.

A family business flourishes to a Good Food Company
By Hacel D. Du

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/04/emilion1.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/04/emilion4.jpg

When JD Bakeshop opened in 1975, it instantly became the pioneering bakery in Iloilo to innovate an exceptional process for breads to have a longer shelf life which is not perishable until seven days. It was then operated by another company but eventually merged with the Diez Family and the intermarriage routed towards triumphant expansions which spread out in major strategic sites in the city. The transformation initially embarked in 1993 when JD Bakeshop fused a fast food service which soon became popular for quality food at an inexpensive cost. It became an invariable eatery for economic value-conscious customers primarily comprised of students. Not long after, a branch in Jaro was born, followed by another in Molo (Citadel), added with a new one in front of St. Paul's, and subsequently followed by the establishment of the Grand Dame Hotel which gave birth to a specialty restaurant called Emilion. Marked as the "good food company", the management converted a deeply embedded credibility as the most trusted in providing quality food at a very economical price, deliberately returning your money's worth. "Nothing beats quality," Mannie Gruenberg, manager of Emilion, enthusiastically explains. "Price is a big factor but we created a formula for quality food that we can market at a lower price but still upholds the best quality that our consumers are looking for." True enough, it is remarkable to note that they devote a sizable investment in Research and Development to concoct and come up with substantial food products. "It usually take 11 months for our cakes to formulate and conceptualize and spend 2 to 3 months for additional foods," says Mr. Gruenberg. Even the chefs are required to train in Manila or by skilled and professional chefs invited to go here in Iloilo to further familiarize their own with specialty cuisines and further polish their expertise and competence in cooking.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/04/emilion2.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/04/emilion3.jpg

Emilion was conceptualized in a conglomeration of business principles which aptly applies to costs, quality, and flair for class which is eminent in the construction and design. "People are now choosy when it comes to food and place where they are seen eating. We want to exceed from our target market of BC class to ABC and that is exactly why we created a restaurant where everybody can go and feel the ambiance of elegance, comfort and grandeur," says Gruenberg. We made a virtual tour of the new Emilion at the Roadhouse in Gen. Luna Street as Gruenberg explains the intricacies of the designs incorporated to achieve the kind of ambiance that they were aiming for. Evidently, each piece, from the chandelier, to the artworks, to the tiles used--some of which are expensively imported from Spain, to every little detail, all unified resulting to a superior realm of exquisite haven of gatherings searching for haute Filipino cuisine. "All of this boils down to careful and constant planning," adds Emil Diez, "we sacrifice more time in planning and conceptualizing than on the construction process. Time and money, both are our primary investment that made us achieve whatever we have now."

They were the first to offer Japanese cuisines priced lower than any other competing Japanese restaurants. With more than 200 variants, they are now adding 30 more to increase their variety. Gruenberg further explains, "we always bring in new things through persistence in innovation, to ensure that the quality of our products be maintained and we stray our business from deterioration, like in equipment for instance, by believing in the "no scratch policy".

The new Emilion offers Filipino dishes cooked and twisted in a new way. Included in the menu are sumptuous concoctions of galunggong pasta, ginataang chicken, and a whole new variety of dishes done modernly. It also has a function room which can accommodate 270 to 300 persons, subdivided into three function areas intended to cater for business meetings, conferences, corporate events or reservations for any family gatherings.

"As a manager, personally my philosophy is that teaching the ownership method to my employees helps a lot. I try to make them feel as if the restaurant, the hotel, the bakery is their own so that each of them will feel the way I feel and that will be the single denominator between me and them to always achieve and do our best," Gruenberg explains on the importance of good management. His staff was the first to implement "bowing" to guests and handing things to them with two hands which consequently are now being imitated by other hotels and restaurants. With the excellence in services that they offer, the Grand Dame Hotel was confirmed and declared as the finest hotel by the national award giving body in the Philippines.

It is not a hard fact that many are interested to franchise JD and Emilion in many areas outside the city. But the Diez family humbly resists offers due to their continuing goal to further develop their products and facilities as well as perfecting the services to constantly exceed people's expectations.

Geography reminders:
The body of water between Iloilo City and Guimaras (where you can view Iloilo's skyline) is called Iloilo Strait, not Guimaras Strait. Guimaras Strait is the one between Guimaras and Negros.

Funtecha.

That's a very interesting theory. I hope the UP professor can enlighten us regarding this, so that we can verify if there is some truth to this legend.

But right now, Batiano and Iloilo being two distinct rivers is not "theory", but fact.

You do have a church in Davao that is unique...San Pedro Chruch. It is unique since it incorporates Islamic, Lumad and Christian aspect of architecture. Although its still new but time will tell its importance, basin 30-80 years from now heritage site na sya. I like San Pedro. :)

hello, bag-o lang ako diya. buhay don dayang thread? From what I've seen in the previous pictures, Iloilo City is doing rather well. Garing duro nga mga kable sa syudad kag mga poste, typical of any city in the Phils. Is there any chance of those cables hanging (sometimes loosely) be buried underground? From what I can gather, the city is prone to flooding however. Mayad gid daad kon underground, we would have been the first city in the Phils to have done so. Daw kalain lantawon hay ya mga kable nagaralaylay, very unsightly, not pleasing to the eyes. Anyway, I have included Iloilo in my next novel, first chapter pa, the least thing I could do for my beloved city really, hope that whoever read it anywhere in the world, let it be known, would be able to know that there is some place in the world, let alone the Philippines that there is a place called Iloilo.

Tourism Literacy promoted through Tumandok
By Bombette G. Marin

EVER wonder what a sinakol is or where the idea for Tinuom Festival came from? Now is the perfect time to bone up on how well you know Iloilo. A growing sense of awareness would help explain why Tumandok is a unique tourism event.

Two weeks from now, tourism advocates in Iloilo will converge at the fountain area of Robinsons Place Iloilo on Sept. 15 to 20, 2006, 4 p.m. to take part in Tumandok.

With teachers, students, travel and tour operators and tourism supporters, this event will be mounted exclusively to create awareness in what everyone consider as an increasingly visible and important sector in Iloilo's economy.

Organized in 2005, Tumandok is a functioning avenue for the Province of Iloilo, whose tourism development and promotions activities it strive to support.

Cognizant of the tourism industry's potential to be a catalyst to economic growth by its capability to create jobs and livelihood opportunities, Tumandok had shared Iloilo tourism's finest moments.

The Provincial Tourism Office with the Iloilo Tourism Officers Association exerts every effort to ensure the success of this undertaking as it firmly supports the various tourism program of the regional office with its mission of generating a living for every Ilonggos through tourism. So it should come as no surprise that when it's time for promoting it tourism officers don’t waste a single minute.

Fifteen municipalities in the province of Iloilo will take part in the 2nd Tumandok celebration is overwhelmed with this years' support coming from tourism schools in the city. As part of a promotional campaign program of the province, all participating booths, each organized to blend seamlessly, creating an attractive centerpiece for the mall, will be refreshed with new concepts.

Both the display and selling courses in the area are attention-getting initiatives of partner tourism officers and students manning the areas. Alongside with almost two hundred tourism students from participating tourism schools like Central Philippine University, St. Therese-MTC Colleges, John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation, Inc., University of San Agustin and ABE, Tumandok is a very festive celebration with its various display of attractions and destinations and cultural performances in a colorful manner before baffled spectators, and efforts of the tourism industry of the province, attending in large numbers.

Like the annual Philippine Travel Mart and WOW Philippines, Tumandok doesn't have enough experience as an established event, so the Provincial Tourism Office has to get the commitment from its pool of tourism officers.

But unlike Philippine Travel Mart and WOW Philippines, too, Tumandok gets a lot of support from tourism teachers and students of participating tourism schools. In fact, these students were sent by their institutions to do the legwork for the documentation of destinations around the province.

Tumandok has its merits, but the hardest-to-get luxuries have no price tag... it's the Experience!

Tumandok is brought to you by the Iloilo Provincial Government through Governor Niel D. Tupas, Sr. the Provincial Tourism Office, the Iloilo Tourism Officers Association with Robinsons Place Iloilo and Negros Navigation.

Those yellow "mopeds" are what we call tricycles. They are meant to transport people, animals and products from different parts of the town. In Iloilo, it can carry from 7 all the way to 10 people. :D

Metro Iloilo-Guimaras economic corridor kicks off

AN economic corridor plan linking Metro Iloilo and Guimaras Island has kicked off after President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed the initiative aimed at boosting tourism potentials in this part of the country.

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said Arroyo signed Executive Order No. 559 August 28 formally creating the Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC) as one of the support systems for the administration’s “mega-regions” program.

The mayor said MIGEDC members are expected to convene next week to start working on identified priorities.

He added they are eyeing a “voluntary contribution” of P200,000 each for Iloilo City and Guimaras and P100,000 each for member-municipalities to come up with an initial P900,000-budget for MIGEDC operations.

MIGEDC, formerly the Metro Iloilo Development Council (MIDC), is composed of the local government units of Iloilo City, Leganes, Pavia, San Miguel, Oton, Sta. Barbara and Guimaras.

The council focuses on the delivery of basic services, environmental management, public safety and security, land use management, infrastructure development, and economic promotion and development.

It also aims to spur local economic development with emphasis on tourism and infrastructure like road and port systems improvement.

“Sta. Barbara, which hosts the new Iloilo airport, has similarly recognized the importance of inter-modal transportation links and tourism development to overall economic growth,” Arroyo stressed in her EO.

With the establishment of MIGEDC, the LGUs involved recognize the need to collaborate on certain specific areas in order to speed up the economic and tourism development of the area.

Arroyo’s ambitious mega-regions program which includes Central Philippines where Western Visayas belongs has identified “tourism as inherent competitive edge and priority area for investments.”

Treñas clarified the MIGEDC will serve as a conglomerate of member-LGUs even as Arroyo herself committed to support the promotions of an economic corridor here.

“It is a welcome development. Iloilo City and Guimaras tie-up has been strong. With the council, we might also better help Guimaras to recover from the oil spill,” he said.

Treñas and Governor Rahman Nava co-chair the MIGEDC with the municipal mayors of Leganes, Pavia, San Miguel, Oton and Sta. Barbara as well as the president of the League of Municipalities of Guimaras as members.

It's officially known as the UNIVERSITY CHURCH, CENTRAL PHILIPPINE UNIVERSITY. Also known as UC (among Centralians), it was founded on 1913 as a Baptist church for the students of Jaro Industrial School (now Central Philippine University). It's also a founding member of the Convention of Philippine Baptist Churches in 1935.

The structure has a distinct Malayan-inspired architecture. Construction commenced in 1968 and was finished in 1972. The canopy in front was added later on (2000's) and its current design was somehow changed based on the original plan.

My dad was involved in the contruction of this structure.

It's near station 2 sa tupad ya lng ang bag-o nga talipapa. Medyo sa sulod sya diutay pero 3-5 minutes lng pakadto sa beach.

Standard cottage (duplex)is good for 4 persons with 2 twin-size beds, hot & cold shower, catv, a/c & a veranda. October off-season rate is P1,200 only.

Deluxe cottage (duplex) is good for 4 persons with 2 twin-size beds, hot & cold shower, catv, a/c, refrigerator & a veranda (and of course bigger). October off-season rate is P1,400 only.

Just PM me if you're interested. :)

My post might be OT but this post is still relevant since Iloilo City is another gateway to Boracay. From Iloilo, one can take a bus or van to Caticlan, Malay, Aklan. From Caticlan, it's one boat ride away to paradise! :)

Nah! That's not a problem Inday Lena! :D
Anwyay, jeepneys are the primary mode of public transportation here in the Philippines. They are similar to busses although smaller since it is a modification of Jeeps that the American GIs used after WW2. Jeepneys are commonly seen in major cities in the country and outbound towards the rural areas.

Tricycles on the other hand are used in short-distance routes.

We do have several artists here that lived in Iloilo. Most of the time they are private but we do have a museum that showcases art pieces from time to time and also in malls. :)

hello, bag-o lang ako diya. buhay don dayang thread?

Tinuom Festival of Cabatuan
By Bombette G. Marin, contributor

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/06/tinuom.festival2.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/06/tinuom.festival5.jpg

Much of the plantation wealth in the towns of Iloilo Province was used to adorn its areas with imposing structures, ornate squares, and above all, churches. Today, Iloilo is highly urbanized, but significant chunks of it are still recognizably colonial. Taken as a whole, it doesn't have the unsullied calm of, say, Cebu or Bohol but many of its individual colonial structures are magnificent, one of the finest anywhere in the Philippines.

Cabatuan, 24.2 kilometers from the city of Iloilo gets to having a near complete colonial town, is one excellent place to break your journey. Located in the west central part of the province, Cabatuan is one of that select band of municipalities which has an electricity you feel from the moment you arrive.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/06/tinuom.festival1.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/06/tinuom.festival4.jpg

In 1732, Spanish missionaries established a mission station by planting a wooden cross (made from hard thick murawon or molave) said to have been four meters high, on a gently undulating hill now known as Pamul-ogan in a quest to bring Christianity to the town. Remains of that historic cross with the date 1773 engraved at its base, still stands on the same hill reminding everyone how vitally important religion is in defining a certain society and its state organization.

The proximity to a level track of land near the northern bank of the Tigum River paved the way for its early settlement, the site where the Poblacion of Cabatuan is presently located.

The name Cabatuan is believed to have derived from the word "Kabatuhan" means "full of stone or bato" in the Hiligaynon dialect.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/06/tinuom.festival3.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/06/tinuom.festival6.jpg

One of the nine municipal towns that make up the third district of the Province of Iloilo, Cabatuan, a third class municipality in the west central part of the province, claims a total of 11,653 hectares, bordering Maasin to the east, the towns of Alimodian and San Miguel to the south, Janiuay to the north, and the towns of Sta. Barbara and New Lucena to the northwest. The territory of the town includes 68 barangays with the majority of its 45,935 (2000 Census on Population) residents contained in its urban areas.

Cabatuan life blends traditions from the past with new activities. For the most part, Cabatuan is a stable town with a considerable degree of domestic tranquility. Historically, most Cabatuan people lived in agricultural villages. Cultural imports started with agriculture and the use of metals marking the beginning of a rich cutlery-making tradition that has continued to the present day. Seasoned craftsmen from the First Cabatuan Metalcraft Association found in Brgy. Maraguit fashioned scrap irons into fine cutleries.

But with the construction of the multi-billion Iloilo Airport of International Standards, the town is slowly acquiring a tremendous momentum and is at present entering a new era marked by remarkable transformations--slowly becoming modernized and urbanized, life in this town has evolved new patterns adding additional diversity to Cabatuan life.

Spanish influence is evident in the large religious structures in Iloilo and the San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish Church is the Cabatuan's most famous tourist attraction. Built simultaneously with its town hall in 1733, the church is known for its Neo-classical architecture where each side is a facade in itself and walls are overlaid with red bricks.

The local government seeks to make Cabatuan more competitive by working closely with industry in order to identify new opportunities for growth. The town's very dynamic and ever-supportive Municipal Mayor, Hon. Ramon C. Yee has created programs to assist key industry sectors, and have included future enhancement for some established industries.

Cabatuan have made many contributions to the tourism industry for the province over the years. Tourism contributes substantially to the town's progress. In the recent years, the sector has been given a high priority in the town's economic development strategy. Cabatuan promotes a growing tourism industry with the municipal mayor administering a number of assistance programs in promoting the town.

The town has a marvelous local cuisine called Tinuom, most popular is at Leah's Tinuom, is much imitated in other parts of the province, based on local ingredients like tomatoes, onions, tanglad and native chicken. Known for its exotic taste, Cabatuan will strike this year by incorporating its popular cuisine with a brand new festival concept, Tinuom Festival.

The municipality wanted to deviate from the conventional tribe competition and decided to incorporate the ingredients of the dish in its cultural performance concept, where guests can enjoy the sight and sound of this newly conceptualized festival. The mayor says that the inspiration for the festival came from its famous Tinu-om dish. Performed to foster identity and to promote tourism, the TINUOM Festival dance is some sort of a trance dance that bring about ritual purification of the community. Re-established this year, performers will portray the movement of the chicken blending it with theatrical and musical forms. Energetic and demonstrative, dancers move swiftly to the accompaniment of the drums.

The town's incoming festivity will be as rich and innovative as ever, and it will burst out this coming Sunday, September 3, 2006 at 9 o'clock in the morning, in a cultural celebration that many think is best for Cabatuan. Other events include the opening of its Agro-Industrial Fair, a lecture on chicken advocacy by the Western Visayas State University Extension Program, Food Festival, Tinuom cooking contest and the Festival Queen Presentation and talent Night.

Treñas, Nava head Metro Iloilo-Guimaras
Economic Development Council

MANILA – Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed Executive Order No. 559 creating the Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC). The Council will focus on the acceleration of the economic development of Iloilo and Guimaras provinces.

The creation of the MIGEDC is in line with the Mega-Region Economic Development Strategy which she espoused in her State-of-the-Nation Address last July.

Aimed at spurring economic growth in the entire country and propelling the Philippines to “First World” status in the next two decades, the new development planning tact involves the creation of five super regions.

“The local government units (LGUs) involved recognize the need to collaborate on certain specific areas in order to speed up the economic and tourism development of the area,” the EO stated.

The creation of the super regions gained the support of, among others, the LGUs that actively participated during the planning meetings by identifying the priority vital projects that would propel economic growth in their areas.

“The success of the Mega-Region Economic Development Strategy will depend highly on the effectiveness of the inter-local government cooperation that are already existing and functioning within the regions which can support the developmental thrusts of the national government,” the EO stated.

The Council “shall formulate, coordinate and monitor programs, projects and activities for the acceleration of the economic growth and development of the City of Iloilo, the municipalities of Oton, San Miguel, Pavia, Leganes, and Sta. Barbara, all in the province of Iloilo, and the entire Province of Guimaras,” the EO added.

The creation of the Council came on the heels of the motor tanker Solar I oil spill that badly affected four towns of Guimaras Province and two towns of Iloilo Province.

It is expected that through the Council, the tourism industry in the two provinces would get a further boost in spite of the “ecological mess” created by the oil spill in the area.

Iloilo City mayor Jerry Treñas was named MIGEDC chairperson, with Guimaras Gov. JC Rahman Nava as co-chairperson.

CPU already has the largest library,Auditorium and Olympic swimming pool already in WV, puro biggest! heheh

Another centralian in the forum. Grand!

...that Noah's Ark-inspired building is CPU's University Church.

Sweetjersey, I've got this info from the CPU website, and definitely a good news for all Centralians around the globe.

CPU gym construction to resume

On July 7, 2006 , 9 A.M. , a consecration worship was held for the resumption of the construction of the Multi-purpose Covered Court.

In attendance were members of the Construction Committee, the President and his VPs, the JITS Construction Corporation representatives, the University Chaplain, and some unit heads and other University constituents.

After the first contractor for the Covered Court proved unable to complete the project in time for the Centennial Celebrations in 2005, CPU conducted another bidding early this month. And this time, the JITS Construction Corporation emerged the winner among five companies who participated and was awarded the P10M project to bring to completion, the initial plan.

In an interview with Mr. Edwin G. Baydo, JITS Operations Manager, the Contract is six months from July 1 to December 31, 2006 or earlier. He reported that around 60 people will work on the construction. According to him, the Gym should be completely usable by then as a venue for sports, with bleachers for the audience, and complete roofing for the basketball court.

JITS based in Quezon City , has a branch office at Leganes , Iloilo . Together with Mr. Baydo at the consecration program for the Gym, were Enjee Brian T. Jardeleza, CE, Asst. to the President and Engr. John Tan, their full-time Engineer. When asked if any of them happened to be alumni of the University, he said that the three of them were not but two of their branch personnel, namely their branch manager and accountant, are Centralians.

Pre-need firm bullish on OFW remittances

A PRE-NEED company sees good sales from areas where families of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) reside even as the government recognizes that OFW remittances keep the economy afloat.

The pre-need industry which offers educational, pension and memorial plans has been on the downside after the controversial fall-out of other companies for failure to pay the educational needs of their plan-holders last year.

But people who decide to have security for their money are expected to continue to patronize the pre-need services.

“A good source of money will be the OFWs. Iloilo is one of the ‘OFW countries’. We expect to cater to the needs of more clients. We are still bullish to this business,” stressed

Roland Gaerlan, head of sales and marketing of Philam Plans.

Gaerlan said the entire industry was affected by the issue but “we weren’t hurt as much as other companies.”

He advised prospective customers who want to secure pre-need plans to check the financial records of the company offering such services.

Gaerlan stressed they are banking on having the largest trust fund in the country currently amounting to P22 billion to be able to pay off their obligations to their clients until 2013.

He added they are releasing educational checks of their customers on time.

“We have also the largest paid up capital of P700 million or seven times larger than the minimum requirement set by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC),” Gaerlan said, adding they have a total assets of P21 billion in 2005.

“The people might have lost confidence on the pre-need sector. It was regrettable that all companies involved in the industry were implicated. But we have maintained our reputation. We are here to stay as research showed that more people trust the company,” Gaerlan clarified.

Rico Bautista, sales territory head for North Luzon, explained the industry has faced setback that “several companies have decided to cease operations because they can’t meet their obligations.”

The problem, Bautista clarified, had propped up because other companies sold traditional plans with the agreement – “put your money and we’ll pay for the future”.

However, it was not anticipated that tuition fees in particular has skyrocketed, thus other companies were not able to shoulder all the educational needs of their customers.

Bautista said that “fixed-value” plans, meaning “give us your money and we’ll pay in certain time” are much preferred option.

“Our advantage is that we did not sell traditional plans. People now tend to choose stronger companies. But we are very optimistic to retain public trust as we know how to pay,” Bautista said.

Represented by the country’s leading insurance Philamlife, Philam Plans is a proud member of the global financial conglomerate of the American International Group (AIG), the leading US-based international insurance and financial organization.

AIG serves over 65 million customers worldwide - including 700, 000 Filipinos through Philam Plans.

Relocation sites to get P8.9-M lighting project

THE relocation sites in barangays Lanit in Jaro district and So-oc in Arevalo district will soon be energized through the P8.9-million electrification project of the Department of Energy (DoE).

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said the project will be implemented once Panay Power Corporation (PPC) pays to DoE the city share in its energy production as mandated by the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA). PPC is expected to pay DOE the said amount by September 20.

The DoE will then give the fund to Panay Electric Company (Peco), the sole power distributor in the city, which will work on the project.

The EPIRA provides that local governments hosting power plants have a share from the volume of energy these facilities produced.

“The city has an EPIRA share of one centavo per kilowatt-hour of electricity generated by PPC. A total of P16 million in EPIRA fund is owed by PPC to DoE since 1998. Once this is settled, the DoE will release the budget to Peco to implement the electrification project,” Treñas explained.

He said Peco was already given the notice to proceed by DoE to energize the resettlement areas in the metropolis.

The celebration of Lent varies from one continent to another. Rituals abound to nurture the framework of spiritual regeneration. The spiritual virtues of sacrifice, the goriness of death and the redemptive values of resurrection are brought to fore during the Holy Week. Despite the varying theological interpretations of doctrine and dogma, the goal is still the same. Lent is a time for reflection about humanity's quest for spiritual wholeness. In a Philippine context of the celebration, the daily grind comes to a standstill, the way of life is reverted to the the basics. The pause from frivolity is obvious as the grimy streets of the metropolis are emptied and the cavernous cathedrals are jam packed with supplicant souls. Others take the way of the beaches as a way of emptying and many more return to the provinces of birth to reconnect with kin and valued traditions of communion. Keeping things simple is the norm and it is reflected even in the food preparation.

One day in the dog day heat of Semana Santa, I prepared Tinu-om -- a simple fare popular in Cabatuan--one of the towns adjacent to Iloilo City. It is native chicken(darag) sliced into bite sized pieces and layered with chopped ginger, garlic, tomatoes, white onions and lemon grass and seasoned slightly with salt and black pepper. Sliced potatoes may be added as an option. The chicken and the fresh ingredients are wrapped in banana leaves, placed in a heat proof bowl and steamed to doneness.

To inhale the steamy aroma as the banana leaf is unwrapped is the first step to enjoy this dish. Then the flavorful broth is either immediately sipped or drizzled on the rice as the chicken is eaten.

A simple dish really but the confluence of flavors courtesy of the chicken, banana leaf and local spices are just irresistible. Some try this by wrapping the chicken in aluminum foil. How does it taste? Your guess is as good as mine.

Your guess is as good as mine.

the municipal hall of Cabatuan, as shown above.. is one the oldest town halls built in Iloilo Province, it follows an 17th-18th century spanish colonial architecture. (like Guimbal's old town hall).

Maayo gd ang pag ka plastar sng Savemore dire kay sentro gd halos tanan nga mga dalagko nga subdivision like Sta Lucia Metropolis, Jaro Grand Estates etc. Mabudlay gd sa part sng mga taga Norte like Zarraga kay kon mag grocery sila budlay magbantay jeep kay puno na halin sa plaza jaro lalo na kon gab-i. Blue Jay Deli offers more than just good food
By Hacel D. Du

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/08/blue.jay1.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/08/blue.jay2.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/08/blue.jay3.jpg

Arlene Juantong, owner of the new Blue Jay Deli knows how not to compromise quality food. Reason why after two years in the food industry, her palatable menu is still sought after by food lovers. She began offering all kinds of luxury brand coffees in her first branch located at the Smallville Complex in Diversion Road, Iloilo City which are uncommon to the ones being offered in coffee shops inside malls. Hers was the first real coffee shop that not only provides imported coffee from hot, chilled to cocktails, but she also have the best pastry in town. "I wanted to have a decent place where people can perfectly unwind and hang out given a good ambiance and the best food," explains Arlene on why she opted to venture on a coffee shop.

Keeping an incomparable reputation for making customers satisfied, she branched out into a delicatessen store and restaurant and added a variety of choices of gourmet food and to-go items that are mostly imported from other countries. Her products is the main reason why she is able to sustain her business despite the fierce competition. "My product is the backbone of my business, so people who come in can always expect the best food that only we can offer."

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/08/blue.jay4.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/08/blue.jay5.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/08/blue.jay6.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/08/blue.jay7.jpg

Following the success of her coffee venture, she recently opened Blue Jay Deli, located at corner Gen. Luna-Jalandoni Streets, a delicatessen restaurant now growing popularly among locals for its wide choices of notable gourmet food and products which are considered among Ilonggo's best. New additions include premium steaks and a wide selection of imported food merchandises from beef, Hungarian sausages, frankfurters, hams, fish, air dried bacon, bottled and canned items, pork bratwurst, chorizos, tenderloins, lamb tracks; a variety of cheese from pastrami, ricotta, Aussie gold, and Parmesan; to wines and chardonnay from Austria, Australia, France, Italy, America and Spain; also chips and chocolates which one cannot find anywhere in Iloilo. In addition to providing a complete meal and items readily available for purchase, Blue Jay Deli also offers heavenly concoctions of hot, cold and frozen beverages.

"When I started to conceptualize the whole thing, the biggest challenge I saw was how to educate the Ilonggos to appreciate good coffee and good food. My apprehension is based from the fact that people have a preconceived notion of paying expensively for gourmet food, and I want to change that," says Arlene.

"The primary goal of this business is to offer only the best and the finest. I always assure satisfaction and by giving that to my consumers, I offer the best value of quality product that they deserve. Why pay cheap when you can't consume it? Why waste your money on food that does not satiate your desire for the best? What I give them is the true merit of what they need, and I want them to understand that it's worth what they paid for." Not only that, she reveals that they keep their clients by being true to their words. For instance, they are known for closely sticking to their store hours.

Blue Jay Deli quickly became a hang out for food connoisseurs, students, and businessmen given its strategic location and convenience which is substantial to the consumers. This is the place for the true and unique style of specialty gourmet food and products. The shop's modern-contemporary design aptly provides a vibe of elegance and urbanity.

"The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away." This is the belief behind why Arlene reveals that she is not entirely after acquiring large business profits but for the most part she is doing it for the glory and service of God. Being a devoted Christian, her restaurant not only became a way for people to recognize quality menu but it also became an avenue to spread the Gospel. "On Sundays we exclusively play Christian music and it is always heart warming to know that our customers are captured and touched by our purpose. It is like a mission fulfilled." She also imparts her blessings by contributing to the outreach programs of Green Cross, and directly assisting her employees not only on financial matters but also by sharing her faith.

Going Japanese: MAKI, Iloilo's first "stand alone" Jap resto opens its doors to sushi-loving gastronomes
Text by Jong Combong-Pijuan

There's a new reason to go to Smallville at Diversion Road these days -- MAKI Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar has taken residence in the popular food and bar strip to give Ilonggos an authentic taste of Japanese cuisine.

Restaurateur couple Pauline and Gus Banusing of Al Dente, Citrus, Villa Regatta and Freska (in Libis) shares the ownership of the restaurant with young businessman Tito Lopez. Such potent partnership can only produce nothing less than an exemplary business offspring.

http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/08/maki1.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/08/maki2.jpg http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/08/maki3.jpg

During the chi-chi opening, guests, friends and Japanese food lovers were given a first sampling of Maki's fabulous and delish dishes. Predictably, everybody couldn't have enough of the sumptuous food!

For food fans out there, on your future visits to Maki, expect affordable and authentic Japanese dishes to please any of your cravings, in a setting that can only be described as minimalistic chic.

And, after enjoying a bowl of Sukiyaki or getting your fix of the Super Manhattan Maki, why don't you swing to Regatta Grill for a taste of your favorite seafood? Literally step out of Maki and you'll get to Regatta Grill, the mini version of Villa Regatta that serves nothing but great Pinoy fare as well as fresh and delicious seafood.

To Maki and Regatta Grill -- Congratulations and Cheers, or as they say in Japan, Kampai!

(UPDATE) CONGLOMERATE SM Investments Corp (SMIC) said its net profit in the first quarter to June rose 22 percent to 1.24 billion pesos from 1.01 billion pesos in the corresponding period last year, aided by higher revenues, mainly from its retail business.
Revenues totaled 11.02 billion pesos, up 10 percent from 10.03 billion pesos a year earlier, of which revenues from its 24 SM Department Stores accounted for 70 percent.

SMIC, which is principally owned by the family of Henry Sy, is the holding company of the SM Group. It has four affiliates listed on the stock exchange, namely SM Prime Holdings Inc, SM Development Corp, Banco de Oro Universal Bank (BDO) and China Banking Corp (Chinabank).
It also owns 11 percent of food and beverage conglomerate San Miguel Corp.
In a statement, SMIC said retail sales in the first quarter reached 7.68 billion pesos, rising 6.5 percent from 7.2 billion pesos a year earlier owing to the opening of two new department stores in 2004 and the newly-renovated SM Makati here in the capital and SM Delgado in the central Philippine city of Iloilo. Rental revenues from malls increased 11 percent to 2 billion pesos in the first quarter from 1.8 billion pesos in the same period last year.
Equity in net earnings of associates BDO and Chinabank grew 124 percent to 503 million pesos from the previous year.
SMIC's total costs and expenses increased 9 percent in the first quarter to 8.7 billion pesos from around 8 billion pesos in the first quarter of 2004.
The company said it expects revenue to improve further in the rest of the year owing to the opening of three new malls in the last quarter.

wow ... those are nice shots collin ... I wonder kung may nami da nga coffee shop sa riverside, pwede tambayan. Daku man siya gali, pero its theme as a boardwalk beside the river, isn't so appealing ... Basing from the pics, maybe they should develop the riverfront more ...

@Gen. Luna: It's my favorite street in Iloilo ... It's relatively clean, with nice establishments lining it ... Tani more streets in the city will be made like this.

Here's a more recent pic I took ... the trees have grown green :)

Ateneo de Iloilo did it again
By Herman Lagon

In A tougher competition with the best schools in Iloilo locking horns for the most coveted Golden Pen Awards overall championship, Ateneo de Iloilo ended up retaining the crown for the fifth straight year over the weekend, hauling five out of the possible 10 first places, among others, in the yearly journalism joust.

Headed by Golden Pen Awardee Victor Robinson III, Ripples editor in chief, almost all the members of the blue-and-white team made at least one runner up award with three of them garnering the Most Promising Campus Journalist in Western Visayas honors: Angelica Quitasol, Stephanie Keiko Enarbia, and Albert Duanne Thomas Javier.

Ripples, to note, is Ateneo de Iloilo's flagship student publication with 40 organic members and same number of apprentices in the high school department. Only half of which attended the basic journalism and writeshop seminar sponsored by the Department of Education, Regional English Circle and ABS-CBN Iloilo.

The second place went to the 80-student-strong contender Assumption Iloilo, followed by the deep-seated Balasan National High School, Colegio de San Jose, Westbridge School for Boys, St. Joseph School, Yamato School, and Western Visayas College of Science and Technology, in that order./Ripples

______________

now, there's the Yamato International School (Lambunao) starting to join the crowd. Btw, is Yamato Int'l School a coed high? Not like Assumption Iloilo (for girls only) and Westbridge High (for boys)?

SM Investments Q1 net profit up 22% on retail business
Posted: 1:29 PM | Aug. 15, 2005

---------------------
IT SHOWS NGA GRABI GD ANG SHARE SNG SM DIRE SA ILOILO

Indeed, big competition between SM City Iloilo in Mandurriao and SM Delgado in City Proper. I hope SM Jaro expansion will be realised soon and further joining the competition of SM stores within Iloilo City alone. Anyway, congrats for SMIC! More to come!

Sang una ano man lng ni nga lugar man. Talipapa lg ni sng una kg mahigku ang lugar. Maayo gd ang pag ka plastar sng Savemore dire kay sentro gd halos tanan nga mga dalagko nga subdivision like Sta Lucia Metropolis, Jaro Grand Estates etc.

Time change, people change, change is GOOD! Toink ** kabati kamo sina?

I guess SM is right to expand along this area. Tama ka gid Collin. Sang una talipapa na gid man lang ina. Medyo mahigko pa but look at it now. They transformed the former wet market into a "town center" or a "mini-mall". Considering nga ang mini-mall nga ini is the site of the new Jollibee in town plus ang SM supermarket.

UPDATE UPDATE!!!! Soon to rise! The Bank of the Philippine Island Highway Branch and Business centr with Incos along General Luna Street, beside Ocean City and Bacolod Chicken House fronting Citibank Savings. I dont know how this building looks like but the construction is going on.

Pila gid ka business center ang ipatindog sang BPI sa ciudad? The BPI-Main along JM Basa (Calle Real) near Bank of Commerce is already a business center long before pa nila ginbakal ang Far East Bank sa atubang sang LandBank. Bag-o naman ini iya? Looks like BPI is expanding sa ciudad sang Iloilo. And like SM, they are positioning themselves well to conquer Ilonggo market. BPI will buy lot/s sa Diversion area and mapatindog naman sila business center dira. Not bad though.

Tourism gab to bring clients closer to ''home''
By Jeehan V. Fernandez

THE Western Visayas tourism sector now wants to bring tourists closer to home.

This is the aim of the weeklong Western Visayas Tourism Assembly (WVTA) to be held in Iloilo City October 23-29.

The first tourism assembly is expected to gather hotels, resorts, travel agencies, transport operators, tour guides, local government officials, students, the academe, media and other tourism stakeholders to prop up the region’s promising industry.

The 7-day assembly will highlight, promote and showcase the diversity of tourism attractions, services and facilities of the different areas of Region 6.

It is going to be a colorful display of destinations, arts, crafts, cultural and historical festivals, shopping and investment opportunities.

The activity will also offer a forum to all stakeholders to explore, identify, resolve priorities, discuss issues and establish linkages for the development of tourism in the region.

“The idea is to bring in the guests. We want to attract the buyers and the markets to come to us and be familiarized with the facilities and services of our tourism industry,” stressed Department of Tourism (DOT-6) regional director Edwin Trompeta.

He said that tourism, trade and cultural events will now be highlighted locally.

“We are expecting at least 60 buyers to meet face to face with 32 sellers and discuss tourism prospects. We have invited industry players from Palawan, Davao, Camiguin, Cagayan de Oro and Cebu as well as the Macau Tourism for strong promotions,” Trompeta said.

“We have to ensure that our services and facilities are properly marketed. We have also to expand our travel exchange programs,” he explained.

Trompeta stressed a forum will bank on four major issues that seek to uplift the industry including destination management, wellness, heritage and relevant education to be tackled by experts.

Likewise, some 15 festivals coming from all over the region will be showcasing their unique pageantry and extravaganza of cultural presentations to a great number of spectators.

Also, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI-6) will encourage businesses in the metropolis to offer week-long sale promotions during the event as people are expected to troop to the city to witness the festivity.

“The value that we could gain from this undertaking will be tremendous considering the number of people that would take part in the celebration,” Trompeta said.

The concept of having a localized tourism fiesta which was originally held in Manila was decided considering the fact that the benefits to be gained will be experienced directly by the local sector.

“We hope to get more visitors while showcasing our festivals. More local government units have contended to localize the tourism promotions,” said Mayor Jerry P. Treñas.

He added that hosting the festivities here is just like sending delegates to Manila to participate in tourism events.

hello, bag-o lang ako diya. buhay don dayang thread?

Early Baptist workers in Western Visayas
By Henry F. Funtecha

Before the first official ordination of Philippine Baptist pastors in 1906, there was already a great number of Filipino and Filipina Baptists who were active in cultivating the Protestant faith, especially in Western Visayas. Among those who had already carved a name for themselves in the evangelical mission were Braulio Manikan, the first Filipino preacher who was from Capiz; a certain Piementel, a Tagalog who lived in Barotac; Ambrosio Velasco, a haciendero from Negros Occidental; Vicente Doronila, a former prisoner at Fort San Pedro in Iloilo City; Hilario Castillo; Pascual Araneta; and a good number of women workers known as "Bible Women".

The "Bible Women" became active in the Protestant proselytization in various ways. According to Rev. H.W. Munger (1990), they were serving both as teachers and evangelists. Their tasks included house to house visitation and personal evangelism, as well as Christian education. They organized Sunday Schools in rural communities and zealously taught children about Jesus and the Bible. Despite open prejudices against them by the Catholic majority, they preached in public areas, such as the plazas and the markets. They also taught other women in the rural areas how to read the Bible that was translated into Hiligaynon and simple cottage industries.

As a whole, the "Bible Women" turned out to be more earnest, faithful, and diligent in their work than their male counterparts, according to Munger. Perhaps, this can be attributed to the fact that they were trained earlier than men in missionary training school beginning in 1904. Thus, they were, in effect, also considered as pastors and contributed greatly to the growth of local Baptist churches by their zeal in teaching young people and in their enthusiasm in inviting others to attend church services.

The early Filipino Baptist pastors, often referred to as "native preachers" by the American missionaries, were principally responsible in the propagation of the gospel, church planting, and in translating the English Bible into Hiligaynon. They involved themselves in preaching the gospel even in places outside the church, such as the streets and the market places. They also served as interpreters when they traveled with the American missionaries in visiting places.

It was noted that the early Philippine Baptist pastors were skillful in organizing people and in expounding on the Scriptures (Jalando-on, 2003). within a short period of time they had planted several churches solely on the financial support and initiative of the local inhabitants. These churches became known to American missionaries and were later visited by them and who were generally surprised to see that Baptist churches had already grown without their involvement and financial assistance. They also distributed Hiligaynon Bibles as well as religious tracts and hymnals in remote places not reached by the American missionaries.

As a recognition of their invaluable contribution and their admirable zeal in spreading the Gospel in Western Visayas, the first batch of Filipino pastors were ordained in 1906. This was after six years of Baptist Mission in the Philippines. The American missionaries decided to ordain eight Filipino Baptist pastors in Panay and Negros based on character and performance such as successful preaching and teaching of the Gospel. However, the recommendation in the same year to ordain Filipina workers was rejected by the Baptist Board in the United States. Women, at that point of time, were considered not qualified for ordination (Briggs, 1907).

The original batch of ordained Filipino Baptist pastors was later on followed by more qualified individuals. Although these "native preachers" and "splendid workers" were well regarded by the American missionaries, it is sad to note that their complete names and address could not be found in American printed documents.

Gahulat-hulat ko ya i-balita ang closure sang SM Jaro for renovation and expansion. Tani ang SM Jaro will be converted to a mini-mall like SM Delgado. Simply lang ang SM Delgado pero may dating man. And indi man siya mapaulihi sa SM City Iloilo. SM Delgado could even rival Gaisano City Iloilo. Ang problema lang is ang space for expansion. But with ICAG Fire Station moving outside the area, tani lang mag-expand pa gid ang SM Delgado. Taking more rent stalls and shops in place para maka-compete siya with MaryMart Mall and The Atrium.

Chy, may ara ka picture sang Robinson's Place Iloilo? Actually, mas gusto ko design sang Robinson's Place Iloilo kay daw pareho siya sa Robinson's Place in Malate. Medyo gamay lang gid siya diutay. But with three or four floors and a grand dancing fountain in place, Robinson's Place Iloilo is the next best mall in Iloilo City.

I would also like for Iloilo to standardize the sidewalks. Gen. Luna is decent but many sidewalks in the city proper have different levels and the street keeps rising up after each repatching. Of course not the most important but I guess someday. :)

I can't recommend you of any travel agency since I usually do my own itinerary/reservations pero I can help you get a good deal in one of the resorts there.

Diin ang sakayan sang jeep or bus going to miag-ao? ang Santo Tomas de Villanueva church maagyan man lang sang jeep or do we have to take tricycle? paano magkadto ang pila pliti?

Miagao and all Southern Iloilo jeepneys begin their route at the Iloilo Terminal Market. From there they pass by UP and turn left to MH del Pilar. They wait awhile near the Petron station beside Hotel del Rio. Then they proceed to Molo and wait again near Molo Supermart before going southwest all the way to Miagao. You can wait for the jeepney at any point along their route. You can also take San Joaquin instead of Miagao jeepneys. it's slightly faster, generally.

The bus terminal is at Brgy. San Pedro in Molo, near Molo Church. Jeepney fare is P30 for students and P40 regular. I don't know about the bus fare. I think it's P50 minimum (not sure).

Miagao Church is right beside the National road so the jeepneys and buses pass, and even wait for passengers, right beside it. If you take the Miagao jeep, they can drop you right in front of the church.

An intereesting thing about Miagao jeepneys (I don't know about San Joaquin, Guimbal, Tubungan, Igbaras, and Tigbauan) is that they bring passengers right to their doorsteps within the poblacion of Miagao. This is sometimes very convenient especially if you have a lot of cargo. You might need to wait for your turn to be brought home though.

Yup, Wacky (San Joaquin), Guimbal, Tubungan, Igbaras and Tigbauan also do door to door service. In the city. you'll be fetched up along the route.

@ Collin. OK lang, Mabuhi man ko sa Cebu. There is an aspect of Cebu tha has a striking similarity IMHO (in my opinion) with Iloilo: Although a big city but people here are still warm, hospitable and quite laid back. Medyo taas lang ugaling ang standard of livingugaling im coping up. With this environment, I can do better later in life. :D

Could please someone post the construction on-going in Zarraga-Leganes border. At least this bridge (that took years) is wide, 4 lanes ina. Finally! 4 lanes na pag-gwa Ciudad, pero madugayan na ina.

@IAMME and the rest. What are the updates in the Jalandoni-Nabitasan access road? Padayon na nila sa Diversion? By the way, for the info of everyone, nakit-an ko sa DPWH plan nila nga me ara nga flyover sa SanAg sa Jalandoni-General Luna Junction dason mag-ubra sila sang Riverside Park sa tupad sang Jalandoni Brdige and another near Dungon Creek and Iloilo River, just in front of Marina and Zuba.

I saw them working on the access road last night. I think they're concreting it, although it was too dark when I passed by.
Regarding the flyover, that is part of the Jalandoni Bridge Project. However, I couldn't imagine how they are going to construct that along Gen. Luna. I insist Gen. Luna looks much better wiothout a flyover. That will just be an eyesore. There has got to be other ways to deal with the traffic. Underpass?
I saw the Iloilo City zoning plan for 2010 way back in 2002. I saw that they also plan to build flyovers along the future circumferential road.

^^ That big stagnated pond there will be reclaimed and they will construct a river park there. On the right side of the road (going to Diversion), that's where the rumors said that they will construct a big Gaisano mall, possibly with the Ayalas, for a "Market Market"(partly owned by the Ayalas and the Gaisanos) type of shopping center.

That Circumferential Road project has already been in the blueprint since the 80's. The Circumferential Road will pass the ongoing construction of Acropolis in Villa, then at So-oc to Mandurriao then out to Oton then back again in Jibao-an, Mandurriao then out to Ungca either in Pavia or in Jaro then will follow the banks of the Iloilo Floodway.

But I hope that the road widening projects in the city will still continue. I've seen "progress" in Bolilao-Diversion area and Timawa area but the one in El98 (Desamparados, Jaro - Huwebesan) and Cuartero Jaro and also in Tabuc Suba, are the critical areas to be widened because these are bottleneck roads.

There is a bridge in Villa, particularly in Gloryville Subdivision (it was under construction a few years ago) and it hasn't been finished yet. Why? When went there, that bridge is going nowhere. No roads on So-oc side. So sa diin na pakadto, sa Encantadia? :D

Now, what the people didn't realize that we have a very big and obvious tourism potential in the city: ILOILO RIVER. It's been snaking around the city for centuries now. It was one of the busiest "rivers" in the country as its first part from Parola all the way to Aduana is Muelle Loney (may issue diri subong, gapamangkot ako: ano ang inyo nga stand sini?) or the Iloilo River Wharf, one of Philippine's first international ports opened since 1855. And from Aduana all the way to Molo....they may construct some parks and picturesque roadsides along the river.

They may even do a "river cruise" from Molo to Parola and back. It's still clean and as of this moment, not reeking of poopoo and people still fish here.

Riverside Boardwalk needs a bit of improvement and hopefully they can accommodate in the near future, a city river cruise like the ones in Thames in London or even Cagayan De Oro. :)

Kung may kwarta lang ko tani, madonate gid ko para masugudan na and river park nga ina. I could almost see the sprawling green grass with families having picnics, children playing in a nearby playground, barkadas doing some barbecue, tycoons making deals in a cafe, and an SSC tambayan right beside the majestic Iloilo River. Then we can all wear our SSC shirts and have a group picture beneath a glorious Iloilo City sunset. sigh...

I hope this river park will be open space. I hope they don't fill it with multi-purpose this and that like what they did to Jaro Plaza.

Tourism gab to bring clients closer to ‘home’

Treñas.

He added that hosting the festivities here is just like sending delegates to Manila to participate in tourism events.

ako iya, pabor gid sa Iloilo River Park. And you're right to say Bernie that Iloilo River is an "unspoken" tourist magnet for Iloilo City. It already played some important roles way back then. And if the city government is keen enough to develop the riverside, creating more parks and boardwalks along its quay, Iloilo City's tourism bid will surely soar to its new heights. Btw, I've heard rumours about Ayalas putting up a store within the area, too, way before an article of buying an old airport site came into picture.

7,100 islands | 7,100 reasons to celebrate | This is the ISLANDS PHILIPPINES

walang anuman pare.

I think indi mo na kinahanglan pa mag-arkila tricycle or what kung gusto mo makadto sa Miag-ao and magtan-aw sang ila simbahan. The church is right at the center of the town. Barely a few meters walk from their municipal hall. It's really beautiful and picturesque gid migs. So from Iloilo City, sakay lang sa Miag-ao nga jeep, ayos na. Ihatod ka pa nila sa atubang gid sang simbahan kung gusto mo. Most of them are tourist-friendly, too.

Gahulat-hulat ko ya i-balita ang closure sang SM Jaro for renovation and expansion. Tani ang SM Jaro will be converted to a mini-mall like SM Delgado. Simply lang ang SM Delgado pero may dating man. And indi man siya mapaulihi sa SM City Iloilo. SM Delgado could even rival Gaisano City Iloilo. Ang problema lang is ang space for expansion. But with ICAG Fire Station moving outside the area, tani lang mag-expand pa gid ang SM Delgado. Taking more rent stalls and shops in place para maka-compete siya with MaryMart Mall and The Atrium.

Chy, may ara ka picture sang Robinson's Place Iloilo? Actually, mas gusto ko design sang Robinson's Place Iloilo kay daw pareho siya sa Robinson's Place in Malate. Medyo gamay lang gid siya diutay. But with three or four floors and a grand dancing fountain in place, Robinson's Place Iloilo is the next best mall in Iloilo City.

tan-aw bala sa photos gallery sang Explore Iloilo ni Chymera kay damo didto. Robinson's Iloilo looks really nice and big. And mas madasig mag-change ang design sang Robinson Iloilo compare sa SM City. Kung tulutan-awon mo, Robinson's Iloilo is almost as the same size as SM City Iloilo. Dako man siya. Medyo malapad-lapad lang gid siguro space sang SM. But when it comes to shops, etc. Robinson's could rival SM City.
