It's not easy to skin the web app they're using. it's similar to ours. also the learning curve is pretty steep. it took me 3 months to design, fix bugs, and learn how to manage the content.

Wonderful! There are zero posts when I checked. Here's the link:link (http://iloilocity.gov.ph/interactive/) What would happen if SSC forumers take over that forum? Would our thoughts (which have been mostly confined to SSC only) finally be heard by the city government?
Ok. But I forgot how to post videos.. I tried one at the infrastructure thread but it only appeared as a link with a pic.
Regarding the reclamation, I don't think it's necessary to reclaim that area at this time. If ever they do, I hope it would be similar to Manila's Baywalk area. :)
Basi amo gid man ina nga pamaagi para mabati-an kita sang ciudad kag probinsiya sang Iloilo. I'll join the forum soon. Daw mas masadya pa guid ina. And kabay pa ang mga Dinagyang and SSC forumers will join the forum, too. Go Iloilo!

Hehehe! "Mopeds" Yup, they are common in the Philippines Inday Lena. From Manila all the way to Davao. They serve like taxiis since most of them serve door-to-door but shared by public. We do have impressive legacies of the past and we want to maintain it. It is a gift that our ancestors pondered with blood, sweat and tears.

all my sympathy goes to this children of Nagarao.

Fil-German kids
lament loss of island-playground Nagarao
By HAZEL P. VILLA
Nagarao Island, Guimaras
THERE is no better playground than an island of white sand ringed with corals, nor is there a finer classroom than a mangrove forest for priceless lessons on ecology.
Filipino-German brothers Andreas, Mateus and Marvin had at first the nonchalance of children when they took the 15-minute motorboat ride from Kupo Wharf in Brgy. Sabang, Sibunag to Nagarao Island owned and managed by their parents Martin and Helen Stummer.
http://www.panaynews.com.ph/images/people%20pic.jpg
THE VIEW of the pier of Nagarao in the early morning at low tide.
But upon disembarking on the island’s pier facing Sabang, the brothers were momentarily taken aback by the sight of some three volunteers loading oil-soaked debris on a small outrigger a few meters away from the white coralline beach.
Marvin, the youngest Stummer brother at 12 years old only had bare feelings when he said in Hiligaynon, “Nakibot ako (I was shocked).”
While Marvin liked eating crabs caught off the waters of Nagarao which is a marine reserve, Andreas, 19, was more partial to the beach front.
Mateus, 17, loved the natural forest of Nagarao and the seascape around White Monkey Rock, a rock formation beside Nagarao surrounded by coral gardens.
“When I was eight, I would swim and snorkel near the mangroves at high tide and pick shells of different colors. Some shells we boiled and we used anything sharp to pull out its flesh,” said Mateus.
The Stummer couple, now estranged, bought the island in 1986.
Andreas and Mateus immediately checked parts of the 10-hectare island which their mother said in telephone calls was smeared with bunker fuel oil from the sunken MT Solar 1 that ran aground off southern Guimaras last August 11.
It was August 28 and the boys were absent from school so they could join their mom to meet President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who was on her second visit to Guimaras Island and was scheduled to sleep in neighboring Costa Aguada Island Resort just to prove that Guimaras is still a place to visit despite the oil slick.
Except for Mateus who plans to go to school in Germany, Andreas and Marvin were busy with schooling and keeping house in Jaro, Iloilo City where they are based most of the time as their Ilongga mom managed the island.
The President’s visit was also the first time for the Stummer brothers to see their island-playground after the oil slick.
Had they seen the island on August 14 when the oil slick first crept on its beach at 2 p.m., they would have been more aghast.
“We had been warned earlier that the oil slick will come our way because of the current. And then we saw and smelled the oil,” said Helen as she recounted the first time she encountered the oil on the shores of Nagarao.
Helen’s sister, Mely Solayao-Karl and her 16-year-old son Michael from Wuerzburg, Germany, were set to enjoy their vacation but had no choice except to join in the frenzy of stopping the slick from reaching the beach.
It was like a joke, narrated Mely, 44, that they arrived together with the slick.
“I have wounds on my legs from helping pull those thorny, tall and lush plants beside the shore because we couldn’t think of anything else to do to stop the oil,” she said.
“This slick reaching Nagarao is the second tragedy of my life,” said Mely, a former manager of the island-resort before she married her German husband Karl.
The oil first smeared parts of the mangrove forest and then White Monkey Rock where tiny oysters and shells were, said Rima Tioco, a family friend of the Stummers who was with Mely upon her arrival in the island.
“Kalain-lain. Daw masuka ka. Daw ka-toxic (It was terrible. You felt like retching. It seemed so toxic),” said Tioco, 45, as she explained that the smell was most terrible when the bunker fuel oil stuck on organic and decaying things like driftwood and mangroves.
About 10 island residents and resort staff helped in putting up more oil spill booms and scooping the slick with their bare hands as they had no gloves or boots.
Five volunteers from the Iloilo City-based Mountain Tigers Rescue Volunteers stayed in Nagarao from August 15 to 29 to help in the clean-up with Helen spending more than P15,000 for the volunteers’ food and P100 daily allowance.
The native of Janiuay, Iloilo said the greater tragedy is in the loss of investments and the foregone revenue of Nagarao because of the oil slick.
Some 60 percent of Nagarao’s visitors are Europeans who normally stay for several weeks or months in Nagarao, which is 30 percent mangroves, 50 percent white beach, and 20 percent rock formation surrounded by coral gardens.
Helen said guests cancelled their bookings done months before when they heard of the MT Solar 1 sinking and the subsequent news about the spread of the oil slick.
A group of ten Koreans already gave their down payment for an overnight stay for August 21 and on August 30, a group of 30 people from Manila was supposed to stay for two nights in the island-resort’s 16 cottages.
“From November to March, the Europeans would come here and some stay for as long as three months, including a couple who own a house here. All of them are gone now,” said Helen, sighing.
A day’s stay in Nagarao would be 38 US dollars (approximately P2,052) for a foreign tourist while locals are charged P1,700 per person per day.
The fees include three meals and accommodation, but excludes transportation expenses.
While waiting for the President on August 28, Stummer said she had a conversation with Petron officials who said they will be “very cooperative” in helping Nagarao recover.
On Aug. 31, Melvin Ballester, a team leader of Petron for coastal cleanups came to Nagarao and said the island-resort could hire 15 persons for the cleanup whom Petron will pay P300 a day.
The hired persons were either staff of the resort and residents of the island who started work on Sept. 1 and will end on Sept. 15 after which Petron said they will be putting more spill booms around Nagarao.
“I asked Petron to refund me for my expenses prior to Petron’s help. That’s about P15,000 but Melvin said his bosses will still have to meet about these things. Up to now, nothing has come out of my request,” said Helen.
She said she won’t file for legal action against Petron if they pay her for her previous expenses of the clean up, continues to rehabilitate Nagarao and financially makes up for revenue losses.
The Ilongga said she is also banking on the 300 million dollars claims from the International Oil Pollution Compensation Fund currently in Guimaras to orient affected Guimaras residents and resort owners on how to go about the claims.
Helen’s estranged husband Martin had earlier threatened to file a 10-million-peso damage suit against oil refiner Petron Corp. and Sunshine Maritime Development Corp., owners of the sunken MT Solar 1. Martin, 66, said he had invested 100 million pesos over the past 18 years to protect the corals and marine life around Nagarao and to beautify the island.
Helen complained to the Inquirer that her estranged husband now living in Binalbagan, Negros Occidental, did not consult her about the said damage suit and was “bypassed” even in view of the fact that ownership of the island is in her name.
With legal wrangling and domestic squabbles the stuff of adults, the Stummer boys are settling with the fact that it may have to take a long time to bring back their island playground to its former pristine beauty.
“I have no idea how to clean all of that oil. Maybe just clean the rocks but it’s a waste of time because some of the oil might just come back,” said Mateus.

I haven't been to Iloilo since 1998...can anyone in here tell me if the Asilo de Molo main building was renovated/enlarged since then? I took some pics of it 8 years ago, and I remember it looking like something from the 1920s. But I think I've seen a recent (like this year) newspaper pic and it looked totally modernized. I liked the old building--it was very neatly maintained and quite well-ventilated with large capiz windows and open corridors.

The planned cirumferential road is the road that snakes from Arevalo to Mandurriao to Jaro. The planned Floodway is the straight green line in Jaro zoned for recreation.
Is it Arevalo or Villa? Which is more correct?
I hope they line the floodway with parks. It's like another Iloilo River, only that it's straight.:)

ILOILO is situated right at the center of the Philippine Archipelago in the heart shaped Panay Island. Fertile soils, wide plains, rich marine resources, a strategic location, and a favorable tropical climate destined Iloilo as a cradle of development.
Legends tell of 10 chieftains and their subjects, who sailed from Borneo and first settled in Iloilo, an event which gave birth to the Filipino Malayan Race. Centuries later, in search of the elusive spice islands, the Spaniards crossed the Pacific Ocean and wandered off to palm-fringed Philippine shores. After exploring and inhabiting some of islands, the tired and hungry conquistadores found refuge in Iloilo, where they discovered plentiful rice and an excellent natural harbor causing them to proceed there from Cebu and make it the base of Spanish colonization in the Philippines.
During the mid 1800s, Iloilo was already the most populous and richest province, maintaining direct trade links with America, Europe and Australia, especially during the heyday of the sugar industry. Being one of the busiest trading posts in Asia, it is not surprising for Iloilo to possess a vast collection of old structures and antiques, many of which still survive to this day. These heritage sites and artifacts, preserved in testimony of an opulent past, have become subjects of interest, attracting curious tourists from all over.
Amidst Iloilo's abundant natural beauty and colorful history, the Ilonggos remain to be its most important asset. A humble people with a rich heritage, known for their genuine hospitality, romantic "tongues", friendly smiles, and amiable faces. Such are the diverse treasures of Iloilo, the very heart of the Philippines. (www.exploreiloilo.com)

Nice to hear the gym construction is ongoing now. I'm sure tanan nga alumni diri sa abroad nagreklamo na tungod sa delay sang project nga ina. A year of wait is far too long kung may ara na nga fund nga ginhatag. And I'm glad CPU re-opened the bidding to fasttrack the project. Calling our fellow Ilonggo forumers based in Iloilo right now...
Maybe we can add or post pictures of other churches or religious structures in Iloilo. I must say Iloilo City is a "City of Churches." In an area of 56 or 70 sq. kms. (please enlighten me on this matter - how and when did Iloilo's land area become 70 sq. kms.), we can find numerous notable churches of different dominations.
Oftentimes, we only feature Roman Catholic Churches. I think it's only fair to showcase other churches here too. A lot of other churches of various denominations in Iloilo have unique characteristics too. The history of the Baptist church in the Philippines are closely linked with a lot of our local Protestant churches.
Listed below are some churches and religious structure which I deem should be featured in future posts.
The Jaro Evangelical Church (JEC)
The structure might not be impressive but it's historical significance can't be overlookes. JEC is the first Baptist Church in the Philippines. It was founded in 1900. I find it ironic that JEC is found a stone-throw away from the seat of Catholicism in Western Visayas - the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral and Palazzio de Arzobispado of the Archdiocese of Jaro.
The Baptist Center Church (BCC)
Has a distinctive Baptist church architecture with it's steepled structure.
The Iloilo Baptist Church (IBC)
Shares the same characteristics as that of BCC but in smaller scale.
The University Church (UC)
Although a non-sectarian university, Central Philippine University has a Baptist church since they're both closely rooted in their history. The structure is greatly influenced by Malayan Architecture with its soaring and slender roofline. (Trivia: There's another Baptist church in Iloilo that follows the architectural style of UC but a smaller version. It's located in Brgy. Buga, Leon, Iloilo)
The San Agustin Chapel
This chapel of the University of San Agustin (USA) in Sambag, Jaro, Iloilo City evokes a Mediterranean feel.
The St. Joseph the Worker Parish Church
Although built quite recently, this church evokes an old world charm. A lot of famous personalities where married here. One of the first to be married here is Alana Lopez-Montelibano. It is located in Brgy. San Isidro, Jaro, Iloilo City.
Iloilo Mission Hospital Chapel
The chapel is a circular structure that resembles that of a tepee.
Sta. Maria Catholic School-Ateneo de Iloilo Chapel
This chapel evokes a lot of Chinese characteristics. Even the statues are Chinese looking.
San Vicente Ferrer Seminary
The last Catholic seminary founded during the Spanish era.
This is what I can think of right now... Hope you can add more to the list. Thanks in advance. :)

Diversion Road (Sen Benigno Aquino Drive), Iloilo City
^^I can't help but notice that Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue is fast becoming our equivalent to EDSA with all the towering billboards that abound. I hope our local government will put restrictions to it. Billboards destroy the cityscape and pose a threat to both motorists and pedestrians when placed haphazardly. Let us not repeat what had happened here in Manila.
@Bernie: Thanks for providing the picture...

... oh my oh my... I just mentioned this to Bernie... everytime we discuss about churches in the city we always forget the following:
1. Tanza Catholic Church
2. Temple of Goddess
3. Mormon Church
4. Iglesia ni Cristo - I think we have several in the city
5. Doane Baptist seminary - one of the oldest seminary in the city
6. New Baptist Church in Lapaz - somewhere in Lopez Jaena (it's new and big) - diretso from Lapaz Church through Aglipay church.
And I am just wondering... do we have any mosque in the city? I believe that there are a lot of Muslims in Iloilo. I am hoping we have one there.

Mang Inasal Philippines opens its 18th branch at SM Mall of Asia

L-R: DOT Undersecretary Oscar
Palabyab, Mang Inasal's Edgar
"Injap" Sia, United Print Media
Group Officer Pat Pineda and
Roxas City Mayor Tony del
Rosario.
Mang Inasal Philippines, a family-owned company which traces back its humble beginnings here in Iloilo, is undeniably one of the fastest-growing food companies in the country. In less than three years after its birth, Mang Inasal has proven its prowess in the fast food industry. Despite of the stiff competition with internationally-acclaimed names in the business, Mang Inasal struggled and fought the saga of excellence. Equipped with great-tasting Filipino favorites and pocket-friendly prices, Mang Inasal knows that in the end it will win the heart of the masses. It has indeed!
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/22/mang.inasal.moa3.jpg
Father Reynaldo Cruz
officiated the blessing rites.
The company's dream of invading the Metro Manila area was realized last September 15, 2006 as Mang Inasal- SM Mall of Asia (MOA) opened simultaneously with Mang Inasal-Bicutan, the 18th and 19th branch respectively. Located near the entrance, Mang Inasal-MOA both have the al fresco and the air-conditioned dining areas. The interiors are similar with that of the Mang Inasal branches here in Iloilo.
The event was well-attended by high-ranking officials and distinguished guests as well as media personalities from Manila, Iloilo and Mindanao.
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/22/mang.inasal.moa4.jpg
Even before the opening ceremony commenced, Manileños started queuing for the most-coveted Mang Inasal Paboritos. Truly, there's no stopping Mang Inasal from making it big!
A huge slice of its phenomenal success was contributed by their original Visayan-style barbecue, in which the company is quite known.
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/22/mang.inasal.moa6.jpg
Today, Mang Inasal Philippines stands above all its local counterparts in sharing the goodness of real Pinoy barbecue in three major regions of the country with its 19 branches.
Now, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao can attest that Mang Inasal is undoubtedly "KUMBINSING"!

City Hall eyes bigger realty tax take at Diversion Road area
THE Diversion Road area in Mandurriao district is fast becoming a real estate haven in the metropolis.
Sprouting there are bars, restaurants and high-rise buildings which may be good sources of real property taxes.
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas yesterday said the mushrooming establishments in the area would help the local economy.
Treñas said the area will become more attractive to investors once a new road, the P15-million road project linking Barangay Tabucan and Diversion Road, will be constructed. The mayor added the project bidding is scheduled this October.
The new road is 10-meter wide and stretches 1.2 kilometers.

Dueñas celebrates 4th Anihan Festival
The beats of drums and the showcase of abundance will again mark the 4th Anihan Festival celebration of Duenas from September 27-30, simultaneous with the town’s Patronal Fiesta.

300 families at Iloilo Airport face eviction
SOME 300 squatter families at the Iloilo airport lot in Mandurriao district may be forced to find a relocation site once the private sector takes over the property from the government.
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas yesterday said the plight of “informal settlers” in the area was one of the considerations taken up in last week’s meeting of a Department of Finance (DOF)-led task Force and Technical Working Group of the Asset Disposition Program.
The group is fast-tracking the sale of the old airport even as the bidding process is expected to take place before yearend.
The mayor, who attended the meeting at the DOF Privatization Office Conference Room in Manila, noted that the how to implement the sale procedures was discussed by the group with consulting firm CB Richard Ellis, which also assisted the Clark and Fort Bonifacio conversions.

[Excerpted with permission from the last chapter of Nick Joaquin’s book, Culture and History (Solar Publishing, Metro Manila, 1988).]
THE Filipino is the product of a particular history that began in the 16th century and our identity as Filipino was chiefly formed by what I consider the twelve greatest events in Philippine history, greatest because they were the epochal ones, the ones which, by the way we responded to them, determined our response to all subsequent events.
Here are what I consider the twelve greatest events in Philippine history:
1. The Introduction of the Wheel.
2. The Introduction of the Plow.
3. The Introduction of Road and Bridge.
4. The Introduction of New Crops like Corn, Tobacco, Camote, Coffee, Tea, Cocoa, Beans, Achuete, Onion, Potato, Guava, Papaya, Pineapple, Avocado, Squash, Lettuce, Cucumber, Cabbage, Sincamas, Sigadillas and Mani, etc., etc.
5. The Introduction of New Livestock like the Horse, the Cow, the Sheep, the Turkey, the Goose, etc., and of the Carabao as Draft Animal.
6. The Introduction of the Fabrica, or Factory.
7. The Introduction of Paper and Printing.
8. The Introduction of the Roman Alphabet.
9. The Introduction of Calendar and Clock.
10. The Introduction of the Map and the Charting of the Philippine Shape.
11. The Introduction of the Arts of Painting and Architecture.
12. The Introduction of the Guisado.
These twelve events are the greatest in our history because they have been affecting us since the 16th century and will continue to affect this nation as long as there are Filipinos. They affect not only the Christian majority but also the highlanders in the north and the Muslim in the south. They affect the artist in his studio as well as the housewife in her kitchen. In short, their effect is universal and at the same time deeply intimate, for these are the events that first informed the identity called a Filipino.
Take the twelfth event: the Introduction of the Guisado. Very simple is the process of the saute, or guisado, but the French say it’s the foundation of civilized cooking; and when we thus learned to dress food, our whole culture was transformed and became the Philippine culture of the adobo, the menudo, the guinisang repollo, the tinola. And every time we sit down at table, the guisado is still an event for us, a continuing event, and one so vital that the inner man in every Filipino, and especially in every Filipina, would undoubtedly declare that the introduction of the guisado is, for us, a far more important event than, say, the founding of the Katipunan.
Or take the introduction of corn, which rescued the Visayan from age-old hunger and has been his prime staple for the last four centuries. Wouldn’t the Visayan readily agree that the introduction of corn is a greater event than the Kawit proclamation of 1898? Or take the introduction of camote, which now seems to us so typically Philippine and which has been delivering from famine those parts of our country so regularly ravaged by typhoons. Wouldn’t the camote-eaters of Samar and Benguet and the Batanes hail the introduction of camote as an event of more lasting value than the Malolos Congress?
Of lasting value, of lasting importance: that’s the quality which distinguishes these twelve events I consider basic to our history; and they are the reason I consider the 16th and 17th centuries the most crucial in our history. Yet there are historians who declare that what was happening in the Philippines then wasn’t even Philippine history! Corn and camote and the guisado are not Philippine history? Apparently not. What Philippine history book even devotes a line to the advent among us of corn and camote and the guisado? They are vital, to put it mildly, to the life of the Filipino—but, no, they are not Philippine history, though Gunter Grass would undoubtedly rank them as higher in importance than the events to which we devote chapter after chapter in our history books.
By snubbing the truly important to favor the less important, we have been developing in our people a warped view of our culture and history. Before the war we were being told that we made more progress in fifty years under the Americans than in over three hundred years under Spain; and this contention was echoed in an article I read recently in a Manila daily, where the author declares that more important events occurred in the Philippines during the first decades of the 20th century than in all the four previous centuries. And I asked myself: What events happened in the 1900s that could possibly be regarded as more important than the introduction of the wheel or the introduction of the plow? Or the introduction of road and bridge and masonry that revolutionized our ideas of human habitation? Or the introduction of calendar and clock that developed in us a sense of history? Or the introduction of paper and printing and the Roman alphabet that resulted in the birth of the Philippine book? Or the introduction of the factory and the machine that signified our passage into an industrial culture? Or the introduction of all those artifacts that enabled us to move forward into civilization?
Our culture and history may be said to be a process converting a mix of cabbages and kings into something different. And the novelty is this nation-in-the-making called the Philippines, this identity-in-prog*ress called the Filipino.

Much of the plantation wealth in the towns of Iloilo Province was used to adorn its areas with imposing structures, ornate squares, and above all, churches. Today, Iloilo is highly urbanized, but significant chunks of it are still recognizably colonial. Taken as a whole, it doesn't have the unsullied calm of, say, Cebu or Bohol but many of its individual colonial structures are magnificent, one of the finest anywhere in the Philippines.
Cabatuan, 24.2 kilometers from the city of Iloilo gets to having a near complete colonial town, is one excellent place to break your journey. Located in the west central part of the province, Cabatuan is one of that select band of municipalities which has an electricity you feel from the moment you arrive.
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/06/tinuom.festival5.jpg
In 1732, Spanish missionaries established a mission station by planting a wooden cross (made from hard thick murawon or molave) said to have been four meters high, on a gently undulating hill now known as Pamul-ogan in a quest to bring Christianity to the town. Remains of that historic cross with the date 1773 engraved at its base, still stands on the same hill reminding everyone how vitally important religion is in defining a certain society and its state organization.
The proximity to a level track of land near the northern bank of the Tigum River paved the way for its early settlement, the site where the Poblacion of Cabatuan is presently located.
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/06/tinuom.festival1.jpg
The name Cabatuan is believed to have derived from the word "Kabatuhan" means "full of stone or bato" in the Hiligaynon dialect.
One of the nine municipal towns that make up the third district of the Province of Iloilo, Cabatuan, a third class municipality in the west central part of the province, claims a total of 11,653 hectares, bordering Maasin to the east, the towns of Alimodian and San Miguel to the south, Janiuay to the north, and the towns of Sta. Barbara and New Lucena to the northwest. The territory of the town includes 68 barangays with the majority of its 45,935 (2000 Census on Population) residents contained in its urban areas.
Cabatuan life blends traditions from the past with new activities. For the most part, Cabatuan is a stable town with a considerable degree of domestic tranquility. Historically, most Cabatuan people lived in agricultural villages. Cultural imports started with agriculture and the use of metals marking the beginning of a rich cutlery-making tradition that has continued to the present day. Seasoned craftsmen from the First Cabatuan Metalcraft Association found in Brgy. Maraguit fashioned scrap irons into fine cutleries.
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/06/tinuom.festival4.jpg
But with the construction of the multi-billion Iloilo Airport of International Standards, the town is slowly acquiring a tremendous momentum and is at present entering a new era marked by remarkable transformations--slowly becoming modernized and urbanized, life in this town has evolved new patterns adding additional diversity to Cabatuan life.
Spanish influence is evident in the large religious structures in Iloilo and the San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish Church is the Cabatuan's most famous tourist attraction. Built simultaneously with its town hall in 1733, the church is known for its Neo-classical architecture where each side is a facade in itself and walls are overlaid with red bricks.
The local government seeks to make Cabatuan more competitive by working closely with industry in order to identify new opportunities for growth. The town's very dynamic and ever-supportive Municipal Mayor, Hon. Ramon C. Yee has created programs to assist key industry sectors, and have included future enhancement for some established industries.
Cabatuan have made many contributions to the tourism industry for the province over the years. Tourism contributes substantially to the town's progress. In the recent years, the sector has been given a high priority in the town's economic development strategy. Cabatuan promotes a growing tourism industry with the municipal mayor administering a number of assistance programs in promoting the town.
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/06/tinuom.festival3.jpg
The town has a marvelous local cuisine called Tinuom, most popular is at Leah's Tinuom, is much imitated in other parts of the province, based on local ingredients like tomatoes, onions, tanglad and native chicken. Known for its exotic taste, Cabatuan will strike this year by incorporating its popular cuisine with a brand new festival concept, Tinuom Festival.
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/06/tinuom.festival6.jpg
The municipality wanted to deviate from the conventional tribe competition and decided to incorporate the ingredients of the dish in its cultural performance concept, where guests can enjoy the sight and sound of this newly conceptualized festival. The mayor says that the inspiration for the festival came from its famous Tinu-om dish. Performed to foster identity and to promote tourism, the TINUOM Festival dance is some sort of a trance dance that bring about ritual purification of the community.Tinuom Festival Re-established this year, performers will portray the movement of the chicken blending it with theatrical and musical forms. Energetic and demonstrative, dancers move swiftly to the accompaniment of the drums.
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/06/tinuom.festival7.jpg
The town's incoming festivity will be as rich and innovative as ever, and it will burst out this coming Sunday, September 3, 2006 at 9 o'clock in the morning, in a cultural celebration that many think is best for Cabatuan. Other events include the opening of its Agro-Industrial Fair, a lecture on chicken advocacy by the Western Visayas State University Extension Program, Food Festival, Tinuom cooking contest and the Festival Queen Presentation and talent Night.

Funds for projects assured
Arroyo: Will include Iloilo-Guimaras programs in nat’l budget
ILOILO CITY (PNA) — President assured members of the Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC) that their priority projects will be included in government appropriation.
Iloilo City Mayor and MIGEDC chairman Jerry P. Treñas met with President Arroyo after the latter arrived from her state visit in Europe.
During the meeting, he was assured by the President that the proposed road networks and circumferential roads of the council would be included in the government budget.
Further, President Arroyo assured Treñas that the projects would be completed before the end of her term.
The President likewise relayed to the mayor her interest in meeting with the members of the MIGEDC sometime in November to give her input on how to further develop the council and make it more responsive to the success of her mega regions project.
President Arroyo signed Executive Order 559 that paved the way for the creation of the MIGEDC. The council is composed of the municipalities of Oton, San Miguel, Pavia, Leganes and Sta Barbara in the province of Guimaras and Iloilo City.
The coucil will work on basic services delivery, environmental management, public safety and security, land use management, infrastructure development and economic and promotions, among others.
As stipulated in the order, Guimaras Governor Rahman Nava will sit as the co-chairman of the council.
Sta. Barbara Mayor Isabelo Maquino is in charge of the Committee on Tourism while Treñas will chair the Environmental and Economic Promotions Committee.

Privatization target quadrupled
(Business World (Philippines) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Confident of successful asset sales, the government has decided to increase its target for privatization revenues to P2 billion from P500 million, the Finance department yesterday announced.
Nearly half of that amount it expected to come from the sale of the 48,832-square meter Makati property formerly occupied by the International School (IS), with two interested buyers - Century Properties Inc. and the AMA Group of companies - in the running, Finance Undersecretary Gabriel R. Singson, Jr. said.
Century Properties, formed by businessman Jose E.B. Antonio, is into residential developments and office complexes, with completed projects including Essensa East Forbes in Fort Bonifacio, West of Ayala in Makati, and the Riviera Golf and Country Club in Cavite. Mr. Antonio serves as the President's special envoy to China.
The AMA group, headed by another presidential envoy, Amable M. Aguiluz III, ambassador to the Gulf states, has a nationwide chain of computer schools.
Both offers were above the IS property's floor price of P1.186 billion which was based on an appraisal made last year, said Mr. Singson, head of the interagency Privatization Council. Since the council is not expecting problems, Mr. Singson said "We're optimistic we're going to close the sale this year."
The Kalayaan Ave. property, marketed as "ideal" for an information technology park, is being sold as is. The government is no longer waiting for the Makati city council to rezone it into a commercial zone from an educational zone, Mr. Singson said.
After four failed public bids, the government is pursuing a negotiated sale for the IS lot, on the auction block since 2002. Ayala Land Inc. has offered a joint venture but the state wants an outright cash sale. The government will get 80% of the sale proceeds, Mr. Singson said. International School-Manila, now in Fort Bonifacio, will get the remaining 20%.
Privatization revenues will also come from the sale of the government's 84% stake in troubled Maynilad Water Services Inc. and the 60- hectare old Iloilo airport, among others, Mr. Singson said.
Whoever acquires Maynilad must pay at least $22.67 million in subscription fees. The winning bidder must also shell out $31 million in financial assistance. The government, through regulator Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, came to own 84% of the utility through a debt-to-equity scheme with the Lopezes, who had to return the concession in 2002 because of mounting obligations aggravated by the 1997 Asian crisis. At least two parties are interested: Ayala-led Manila Water Co. and construction firm DMCI Holdings Inc. of the Consunjis.
The old Iloilo airport, meanwhile, is expected to be sold before the opening of the new airport in the first quarter of 2007, Mr. Singson said. A valuation is being conducted by CB Richard Ellis and will be finished in two months. Officials said the property commands a higher price considering it beside the new SM mall in Iloilo City.
Also up for privatization are Al Amanah Islamic Investment Bank of the Philippines and Philippine National Oil Co.-Energy Development Co. (PNOC- EDC). The government has begun scouting for a financial adviser for Al Amanah, the only Islamic bank in the country. PNOC-EDC is planning to sell a 25-30% stake through an initial public offering which could yield as much as P7 billion.
Privatization efforts yielded P2 billion last year with the sale of the government's stake in Philippine National Bank to taipan Lucio C. Tan. The target was also P500 million.

More than that, try read their leaflets where the Philippines is included in countries which harbours terrorism hence a big delay when applying tourist visa. JPT nixes privatization of public markets
ILOILO City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said public markets run by the City government exist for public service, not for profit.
The City Hall operates big public markets such as the Iloilo Central Market, Iloilo Terminal Market and Lapaz Market by paying the salaries of personnel, electricity bills and other maintenance expenses.

Foreign govts heed Treñas’ oil spill plea
League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) president and Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas has convinced several foreign governments to help mitigate the effects of the M/T Solar 1 oil spill which contaminated Guimaras and Iloilo.
Treñas, reputedly the well-traveled chief executive of the city, has established connections with several government executives abroad.
Right after oil spill last month, Treñas sent letters to several foreign governments and organizations asking for aid in behalf of the victims of the incident.
The governments of Australia, United States and Germany were the first to answer Treñas’ “distress call.”

Capitol lawyer getting 'good vibes' on power substation plan
By Florence F. Hibionada
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/25/capitol.substation.jpg
The Capitol power substation.
The promise of a big cut in the Iloilo Provincial Government's electric bill is almost in the bag. Or so it appears as a top Capitol lawyer expressed optimism on the planned direct power connection and full operation of a substation here.
As such, from the regular P1 million monthly electric consumption due to Panay Electric Company (PECO), Provincial Legal Office (PLO) chief Salvador Cabaluna told capitol reporters forthcoming savings of up to 40% can be expected.
To date, the hearing with the Energy Regulation Commission (ERC) is on its last rounds that gathered anew key officials of the Iloilo Provincial Government, oppositors in the PECO and representatives from Philippine Foremost Milling Corporation, an apparent Capitol partner in said direct power connection bid.

^^ But, he is still human though. In the first district, there are places that were "neglected" due to political affiliation or in other words, pulitika. I can see the difference, especially during the time when the asphalting of the road, mauna guid ang sa Guimbal and pirmi na lang lagging behind ang Miagao kon kis-a. The Flores/Noble and the Garins are always on the quarell and it affects the citizenry.
Syjuco is at the hotseat in the 2nd district due to poltics. The Pavia Public Market was supposedly be improved 2 years ago but as according to Cadio in an interview, the Solon withdrew the project because of one thing: Sen. Drilon is Cadio's friend and Drilon is one of the senators who wants Ate Glo out of Malacañang and Syjuco is her ally. Hay...politics!
A mirror of datuism/barangaynismo in modern day Iloilo. Not just here in Iloilo but other places in the country as well.
Someday, if Miag-ao and Guimbal will merge into one, then their festival will be called "BANTAY SALAKAY FESTIVAL", hehehe! :D
crappy politicians. ga-serbisyo sila indi sa mga pumuluyo kundi para sa ila kaugalingon. Well, 'la ta mahimo sina kay ara sila sa puwesto. Either you beat 'em or join 'em. Amo lang ina ka-simply sa aton. Glad the family is out of any political affiliation. Budlay na mahambalan nga nangurakot ta. Kung tani mas damo pa guid wawarts ta for shopping diri sa europa kung may paryente ta nga nakapuwesto ba (joke gid. harhar).
Bernniemack, daw gusto ko gid inang bag-o nga festival. Appropriate gid ina siguro sa panahon nga ini.

Looks like Garin is owning half of Guimbal's total land area. Pero ka-impressive sang iya mga projects. Business on its upswing for former cong. Oca Garin.
maayo kay tunga lang sang Guimbal ang iya. May lugar pa para sa iban nga mga pumuluyo. Btw, along the way from Oton going to Miag-ao, damo na gid dira mga nagmi-an nga balay kag sa pagkadalagko man. Bal-anon mo gid iya ang may mga abroad kay biskan sa style sang balay pa lang may dating. Mostly patterned siya sa south Californian style houses. Inang pareho sa OC bala. Aw ah, OC gid tuod. harhar.

PPC pays for city’s lighting projects
PANAY Power Corporation (PPC), the sole energy provider in Iloilo City, paid some P8.8-million to the Department of Energy (DOE) Friday last week as the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) share of the city.
“The amount will be sufficient to finance the city’s lighting projects in Barangays Lanit in Jaro district and So-oc in Arevalo district,” said Mayor Jerry P. Treñas.
He added the DOE will deposit the amount to Panay Electric Company (Peco) Friday so that the city’s sole power distributor can start working on the electrification projects immediately.
Under the EPIRA law, Iloilo City is entitled to a portion of the PPC revenues being the host to the power plant.

Powerhouse confab as TSKI marks 20th anniversary
Experts in the country's Franchise Industry gather for the region's biggest franchise conference and trade exposition.
As such, better business prospects are up for participants with invites sent out to the Ilonggo community throughout Western Visayas.
Hundreds of entrepreneurs, leaders in the Franchise Industry, businessmen from various local chambers, trade associations, professionals, civic organizations, families of Overseas Filipino Workers, retirees and the Small and Medium Enterprise Development community will converge here in Iloilo City.
Dubbed as the "Iloilo Franchise Conference and Exposition," the event that will start on September 28 will see trade and industry experts and successful franchisees with trade talks and discussions aimed at further stimulating the investment climate in Western Visayas.
Among the highlight of Taytay sa Kauswagan Inc.'s (TSKI) 20th anniversary celebration, the franchise conference wants every Ilonggo to be part of the strengthening and global power of franchising. Key figures in the Philippine Franchise Association and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Iloilo Chapter are the conference partners alongside the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Iloilo City Government and the Iloilo Provincial Government.

balik sa gin-post ko kahapon. Wala guid sang may nag-comment about Iloilo Doctor's College expansion ba? I'm wond'ring kung diin ining new admin nila ipatindog. The campus is veru crowded and may gina-cnstruct pa da sila sa may kilid sang medical centre. Paspas na guid ang pag-expand sang IDC and I've heard nga gina-umpisahan na nila nga himuon ang every classroom nga airconditioned. How true ang bagay nga ini? Wow other than structural expansion, posh na kaayo ang mga taga-Docs.

Villa Regatta is one of the best dine-in places in Villa/Calumpang at present. We went there last year during Centennial. Candlelight dinner is its best feature. Medyo bag-o bag-o pa to ang Villa Regatta and pirmi guid puno. And you're right, mas barato guid man siya compare sa Breakthrough and Tatoys yet the service and food are real excellent. Daw amo naman ina ang bag-o nga hangout area sa Villa subong. It's cooler to stay on beachside kung gab-i and overlooking Guimaras island.

@chymera, wala ka dira pics sang Iloilo Mission Hospital? Miss ko na IMH, sulodlon abi mo ang lugar, tani himu-an nalang nila road dira from mission road diretso sa sports complex para daw main road man ang dating sang IMH.
More and college expansion rather than hospital expansion siguro. Sa pagagutok na guid dira sa Iloilo Doctor's. I viewed their website last night and whoah, naghimo gali sila sang gymnasium right at the center of their campus? Daw nagdugang na guid gutok sang area. I wish that the Iloilo Doctor's Medical Center will expand more. Ang school building nila tani dira sa likod himuon na lang nila nga hospital extension and mangita na lang sila dako nga lote to cater sang ila college expansion. Right now, may ara ginapatindog sila nga 8-storey building sa may kilid sang Doctor's Dormitory. Wala na sila lugar for future expansion unless they'll start expanding vertically, which I believe will be the most likely nga matabo in few years time. Infra-wise, they IDC is becoming more and more competitive. This proposed new admin building, diin ayhan nila ini ipatindog? I'm still imagining IDC at present pero daw indi ko guid ma-picture out maayo ang mga definite locations sang ila buildings. I hope may taga-IDC diri to post the campus pics.
Speaking of IMH, Incognito, daw ginguba na nila bala ang old NUrse's Home to make way to the new 4 or 5 storey building. Basi new Nurse's home or Doctor's Dormitory man kuno or probably turning it into a MAB. May ara pa gani kuno plan to expand sa may likod dampi for the college of medicine. Pero wala pa ako details diri. Sa new nurse's home (?) daw wala pa ko kakita perspective nila ah. Incognito, di ba sa Mission ka before? Guess ara ka sa ER. And few of our batchmates upod mo pa mag-duty siguro. Btw, good plan guid man ina to make access road for IMH. Kay kung indi ka taga-aton, I'm sure you wouldn't notice nga may dako nga hospital dira sa sulod. And speaking of Mission Road, dira naman kuno ang bag-o nga STI College. Daw magutok na guid dira nga area no?

amo ina ang ginalikawan ko nga area sa ciudad subong. Thinking nga lapad ang dalan and highway siya, the Diversion Road is turning into a traffic nigthmare especially rush hours area even indi pa gani kung kaisa. Dako na sila lanes dira pero ambut kung ngaa sa pagka-traffic kapin pa maghuluhapon. From crossing sa Jaro all the way up to UPV mahinay ang dalagan sang salakyan. Most of the times, diri na lang kami galabay sa Domestc Airport to Molo then kadto sa city proper. Though ma-traffic sa plaza area, after sang cemetery dira okay na ang dalagan niya. But it wiser na guid kung dira imo way going to villa for dine-in sa kilid dagat. Bag-o lang guid ko gani kabalo iya sang mga suludlon nga dalan sa Jaro dampi para lang makalikaw sang traffic sa aton. Of all the district, Jaro guid nga terrble pag-abot sa trapiko.

No contractor for P300M New City Hall yet
By Lory Ann B. Bilbao and Kathy Villalon Cinco
BIDS and Awards Committee (BAC) Chairman and City Legal Office Chief Edgar Gil said the City Government has not yet chosen a contractor for the P300 million New Iloilo City Hall.
Gil said the City is yet to publish its bid in a national newspaper.
The "City Hall of the Future" was visualized as a six-storey building where all City Hall employees will hold office.
The New Hall will be situated in Plaza Libertad where the old building stands.
The exterior of the fifth and sixth floor will resemble that of the custom's house semblance.
The 3rd floor shall be the parking place and the rest will be the offices.
The exterior design of the University of the Philippine's Library will be adopted on the entrance while its windows will de designed like the Masonic Temple's. The construction will start on the first quarter of 2007.

GRACIANO Lopez-Jaena, a great Ilonggo writer and orator, will finally be immortalized in a P15-million Memorial Shrine to be built in his birth place in Jaro, Iloilo City.

Fisheries research symposium moved to Oct. 23-24
THE National Fisheries Research Symposium originally scheduled on October 20-21, 2006 was moved to October 23-24, still at the same venue at the Iloilo Grand Hotel.
Organized by the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences of UP in the Visayas, the symposium seeks to highlight the generally poor conditions of fisheries in the Philippines which are highly influenced by past and present practices in aquaculture, capture fisheries and post-harvest fisheries.
For example, safety measures are rarely considered in aquaculture. Excessive fishing and indiscriminate use of non-selective fishing gears are among the main factors responsible for the declining wild fisheries resources and degradation of aquatic habitat.

City's new abattoir to be upgraded
By Lory Ann B. Bilbao
FROM double to triple "A" standard, the new Iloilo City Slaughterhouse situated in a 2.3-hectare lot in Tacas, Jaro will be upgraded.
Representatives from the Department of Agriculture (DA) revealed the said plan.
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said it only takes a refrigeration facility in the slaughterhouse for it to be qualified for the same standard.
The P30 million slaughterhouse, the construction of which was started in March 2005, has its Building A finished for P6 million.

Chy,
May request ako sa imo.Total, ara ka man da sa Iloilo, you are the best person to verify this figure: 12,000 sq. m. gid man bala ang lot size sg present nga city hall, as reported by The Guardian above, o basi 12,000 sq. m. ang aggregate floor area sg bag-o nga city hall? The article I think is misleading.
12,000 sq. m. is 1.2 hectares, which I think is too large an area for the present city hall. At the most, mga 30 meters lang na ang city hall halin sa atubang pakadto sa likod. Kun 12,000 sq. m. ang area ya, buot silingon mga 400 meters ang kalabaon ya? :D

The recent pictures of foods IMO manifests Ilonggos are not "one-day millionaires". Ilonggos prefer to spend money over food than material things or bling-blings. They may spend lavishly when the right time comes such as festivals and birthdays, but for ordinary days, we just enjoy to sip the warm batchoy soup and eat KBL. Some say that Ilonggos tend their money in their hands and not spend it on impractical things. Simple living in such an urban environment. Whenever a product is expensive, it'll raise the eyebrows of an ordinary Ilonggo shopper.
The misconception that "ang kwarta gina-piko ginapala" in Iloilo refers to the people boasting of their money and lifestyle while infact it refers to the sugar industry and the status of the city that once raked money literally and money being raked and shoveled as an allegory in planting sugar. We cannot blame history on this. Times have changed and so are the values of the people.
We may be laidback in nature but we do not resort in mediocrity. :D

According to a news source the City Hall lot area is only 2162 square meters. The 12,000 square meter figure is for the floor area na siguro (the 11-story version of the Iloilo City Hall had a 17,000 square meter floor area).
I really want to see the detailed design of the City Hall, I'm wondering how it will turn out kay kadamo elements ang guin fuse nila. I hope they will blend well together. i'm sure it'll be a very iconic building for Iloilo.
"The "City Hall of the Future" was visualized as a six-storey building where all City Hall employees will hold office.

i've spent 10 days in iloilo for our psyche exposure and yeah it was great... the ourskirts are already being filled with new hulking 5 - 6 storey buildings like in jaro and molo and it's downtown area filled and compacted with 4- 6 storey building. Well iloilo is not as green and wideopen as bacolod because of the compactness but what i liked about it is the urbanity and it's inner city feel... downtown iloilo have very big blocks though which is hard if u commute.. kapoy lakat ang 2 ka bannga daw 4 na bannga sang bacolod.. hehe

It's STL time!

Happy times are here again for STL (Small Town Lottery) lovers.
Hundreds of bet collectors are expected to be on the move in the different parts of the city as the Iloilo City Small Town Lottery Gaming Corporation (ICSTLGC) starts its dry-run today, September 25. Bettors are also expected to troop the STL office along Arroyo Street, City Proper.
The operation of the STL, which is under the supervision of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), was favorably endorsed by the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP). The SP's recommendation through Councilor Armand Parcon, chair of the committee on games, amusement and professional sports, was based on the series of hearings conducted at the session hall and conference hall of the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

Iloilo is an old city, conglomerate of 6 once towns (Jaro, Molo, Arevalo/Villa, Iloilo, Mandurriao and LaPaz) that are now districts of the city. It is very compact and imposed as a challenge to the urban planners. That's why they've created MIGDEC so that the area outside of the city premises were to be utilized.
Bacolod is relatively new and has a grid-like pattern in the downtown and has bigger city land area.
At least you've enjoyed Iloilo for 10 days. You're always welcome here! :D

Capitol project may displace 153 families
By DAVID ISRAEL SINAY
ILOILO City – The Iloilo Provincial Government’s Information Technology Building project in Brgy. Magsaysay, La Paz district could displace 114 households consisting of 153 families.
This surprised the Iloilo City Urban Poor Affairs Office (ICUPAO) that is apparently clueless of the provincial capitol’s ambitious project.
The provincial government as a lot in Brgy. Magsaysay.
ICUPAO Chief Roy Firmeza said the provincial government has not coordinated with the city government.
Provincial Administrator Manuel Mejorada said the capitol is leaving the problem of relocating the affected families to the city government.
The provincial government targets to evict the squatter families before the year ends.
Firmeza said Magsaysay Barangay Captain Rockzam Palmares requested that a dialogue be held between the city and provincial governments, and the families to be affected.
The provincial government plans to put up a seven-story IT building on its lot in Brgy. Magsaysay; it will service companies engaged in business process outsourcing responsible for the booming of call centers in the country.
The lot owned by the provincial government is 3,400 square meters.
According to Firmeza, the city government can only relocate about 50 percent of the total number of families to be displaced.
The city government, Firmeza said, has 12 relocation sites in Brgys. Sto. Niño Sur, Arevalo; two sites in San Juan, Molo; East Baluarte, Molo; East Timawa, Molo; Bito-on, Jaro; San Isidro, Jaro; Lanit, Jaro; So-oc Socialized Housing Zone; South Fundidor, Molo; and in Buntatala, Jaro and in So-oc, Arevalo for the project affected families of the Iloilo Flood Control Project.

Chy,
May request ako sa imo.Total, ara ka man da sa Iloilo, you are the best person to verify this figure: 12,000 sq. m. gid man bala ang lot size sg present nga city hall, as reported by The Guardian above, o basi 12,000 sq. m. ang aggregate floor area sg bag-o nga city hall? The article I think is misleading.
12,000 sq. m. is 1.2 hectares, which I think is too large an area for the present city hall. At the most, mga 30 meters lang na ang city hall halin sa atubang pakadto sa likod. Kun 12,000 sq. m. ang area ya, buot silingon mga 400 meters ang kalabaon ya? :D
misleading guid man ang iban nga mga informations Sam. There's even one article nga ang bag-o nga city hall is a seven=storey, not six and of course ang floor area niya varies from time to time. I hope they'll release info with consistency kung kaisa. Malingin ulo ta sini. ha ha.

MANILA – Senate Finance Committee Chairman Sen. Franklin Drilon said the P46.9 billion supplemental budget for year 2006, which was approved by Congress last week, provides for adequate appropriations for the rehabilitation of disaster areas in Western Visayas and the Bicol Region.

Savannah: Through 6 years and beyond
DRIVEN with the company’s core mission of building a home for every Filipino family, Crown Communities in Iloilo has flourished to become the Region’s leading housing authority. Already on its sixth year, the company continues to offer revolutionized subdivision development in Iloilo. From its initial project Savannah Glades, then came Savannah Trails A in 2001, Savannah Glen A in 2002, Savannah Trails B, Glen B and C in 2003, Savannah Glen D in 2004, Savannah Trails C and The Crest in 2005 and Savannah Glen E in 2006.
Covering 300 hectares, Savannah is a well-planned community inspired by the Victorian homes of Savannah, Georgia – thus, the name. Savannah is, perhaps, the most beautiful, the most prestigious and the largest community development in Iloilo, if not the whole of Panay Island.
Currently home to more than 300 familes, Savannah is a thriving lived-in community. Masterfully-developed and professionally-managed, Savannah provides a better quality of life by offering an elegant, spacious and themed community with various amenities and homes for practically every kind of family – for the family with an upsacle lifestyle to the family who’s just starting out.
Truly with Savannah, every family is assured of a community that provides for a better quality of life, a place that’s clean, safe, secure and flood-free, a home that’s near what you need in life and a community that offers countless choices for a better life.

Electrification of two relocation sites underway
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/09/27/electrification.of.two.relocation.sites.underway.html
By Maricar M. Calubiran
For years, this household in Lanit relocation site
uses kerosene lamp to light up their night.
Good news to occupants of the city government's relocation sites in Barangay Lanit, Jaro and Barangay Sooc, Arevalo. The possibility that they will already have lighting facilities before the year ends is becoming close as MetroGlobal's Panay Power Corporation (PPC) already paid the Department of Energy (DoE) its dues amounting to P8.8 million.
Mayor Jerry Treñas said he was informed by PPC of the development only recently.
The amount, Treñas said, will be used in the electrification of the two relocation sites.
The P8.8 million is only part of PPC's total dues to the energy department as mandated by the Electric Power Industry Reform (Epira) Law.
It was learned that PPC has an outstanding balance of P16 million with the DOE.
Treñas said Panay Electric Company (Peco) will start the installation of lighting facilities as soon as the money is already available. The city has designed a plan for the electrification of the two relocation sites. The design was already agreed upon by Peco and the city government.
Hundreds of occupants in the two relocation sites have long been living in the dark literally since they were relocated by the city government. Aside from the lack of electricity, residents were deprived of water supply and road right of way.
They had long called the attention of the city government about their plight but such calls merely fell on deaf ears.

LA RUTA ILONGGA: JEEPNEY TRIPS SERIES
Tagsa-lugar nga maagyan, may istorya nga makit-an.
FEATURED JEEPNEY ROUTE OF THE DAY:
Parola-Super
May be the shortest jeepney route in Iloilo City but it do pass some historical landmarks that are significant in the national history. Starting from the Parola or the lighthouse of the mouth of Iloilo River and ends up in Iloilo's Terminal Market or locally called "Supermarket". The jeepneys may not be as attractive as those of the other routes but its serves as a shuttle from the port area towards the city center.
Streets passed by this route:
Muelle Loney-Zamora-Rizal-Iznart-DeLeon and back (all within city proper)
Sa Lugar lang (Landmarks along the route)
Parola y Muelle Loney
Starting from Parola, the place where the Iloilo-Buenavista (Guimaras) ferry terminal is at. The lighthouses are the port guides at the mouth of Iloilo River, both of its banks have witnessed ecstasy and agony in history. The Muelle Loney served as the lifeblood of once Queen City of the South. Opened to international market in 1855 and pumped by sugar economy, it made Iloilo the second most important city in the country by the late 19th century and all the way towards the Commonwealth era before the recession of the sugar economy. The wharf was named after the "father of the modern sugar industry of the Philippines", Nicholas Loney, a British Vice-Consul who introduced modern technology of sugar industry that skyrocketed Iloilo's economy in the late Spanish era. It has witness the diaspora of Ilonggos and Panaynons to Negros, Mindanao and other places in the 50's.
Today, remnants of Iloilo's glorious past is manifested. Old establishments in contrast with modern cars and sleek catamarans. The Aduana watches over the river wharf, and still is a vital infrastructure to the economy of Iloilo.

Muelle Loney and the Aduana*
Plaza Libertad
After passing Muelle Loney and went thru the streets of the waterfront district, we pass by on one place that the Spanish colors were lowered in Asia. In December 1898, Plaza Alfonso XVII witnessed the surrender of the last Spanish governor-general in the Philippine islands. It was renamed Plaza Libertad because of its historic significance. Surrounding this historic square is the San Jose Church, which is the seat of the Iloilo parish and besides it is the Lacson Ancestral House were on the corner was the the site of Botica Lacson. Across the street in the northern part of the plaza is the decript City Hall of Iloilo, in which a new city hall will rise soon. Opposite to it was Hotel Iloilo now known as Landbank Plaza Libertad. Government offices such as the Social Security System and Census Office are found in the western side and the imposing Masonic temple stands as a sentinel in Calle Real area.

San Jose Chruch
Calle Rizal and Central Market/Maria Clara
Rizal Street was named after the country's national hero. Runs from Plaza Libertad all the way to Barangay Tanza in the western fringes of the city proper district. The Parola jeepney will turn right from Plaza Libertad passing by the Celso-Ledesma Mansion in Bannga Ortiz in which eagle gargoyles guard the beige bathed mansion owned by a prominent family in the city. Gaisano Iloilo in Guanco is the first store of the Cebuano magnates in Iloilo. Just across it is the University of Iloilo, known for its criminology course in the region. Owned by the Lopezes, the establishment itself was believed to be a former bus station before it was converted into a school after World War II.
Across it is the Central Market of the city with it's art deco motif. Here, you can buy fresh foods and other bargain pasalubong from Iloilo.
With the monument of Maria Clara in the middle of the street, it is where the southern border of the Ilonggo Chinese community ends. Calle Iznart and in the distance is the imposing Capitolio Ilonggo.
Supermarket, Robinson's Place and Santa Teresita
May it be going straight by Rizal Street or turning left to De Leon St, the Parola is approaching its terminus. On its port side of the jeepney is the Robinson's Place Iloilo mall (proposed as temporary site of the City Hall offices during the construction period). In 2003, the dark DeLeon Street was converted into a nightspot for concerts and gimmick for the barkada as Paseo Iloilo opened. Just across the mall is the Church of Santa Teresita.
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h291/berniemacksouthcentral/219268946_274082ffb3.jpg*
On its final approach, the Parola jeep stopped by at the Terminal Market known as "Super". This is the "bagsakan" or where the goods from the province is being sold to city consumers and being traded to other places as well. In its second floor is the temporary site for the Legislative branch of the City Government. Isn't it amazing? Part of the city hall is a market?

Drilon visited the P6-billion project yesterday to
personally see the accomplishments of the Japanese
contractor Taisei-Shimizu Joint Venture amid issues of
graft and corruption hounding the project.
.......
Citing his conversation with TSJV engineers, Drilon
said the new Iloilo airport is already 77 percent
complete “which is four percent higher than the
targeted accomplishment.”
The construction of the new airport began April 14,
2004 and is expected to be finished late this year or
early 2007.

As a whole Tigbauan's Church is not that imposing... It is special because the three belfries in its facade, normally 2 lang, but they look so out of place with the whole structure. What is most striking about the Tigbauan Church, is the details on the main entrance. It looks nice ...
Another thing that imressed me when I visited the church was when I went inside ... I never expected to see its walls including the altar and the depiction of Christ's climb to Mt. Calvary to be made totally of MOSAIC TILES! ... The work done on the Tigbauan Church was very detailed and skillful

hmmm... i think this this is a plaza marker.
In Janiuay, plaza markers are made of baked bricks. They stand just outside the church.
In Cabatuan, plaza markers are made of limestone, and looks simillar with Janiuay's.
In Jaro, Plaza markers are made of concrete, they stand on four sides of the park, on one marker is where the lady of candles stand.
Bandstands are also common among Ilonggo Plaza.
Sta. Barbara Bandstand- one of the most attractive in the province
Jaro Bandstand- it might be the largest in Iloilo
Molo Bandstand- a Byzantine domed gazebo which has been matched with the church.
Plaza markers are colonial structures which are built before a 'plaza' is established. There are only few towns in Iloilo with plaza markers. These are signs of hispanic occupation or colonial rule.
I haven't seen(noticed) plaza markers in Libertad yet...:)

DoE eyes new plant in Iloilo
http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=regions04_oct02_2006
ILOILO CITY%u2014The Department of Energy has proposed that another power plant be put up in Igbaras, Iloilo, the Western Visayas Regional Development Council announced over the weekend.
Antique Gov. and RDC chairman Salvacion Zaldivar-Perez said Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla said a hydropower plant is suitable in Barangay Igbolo in Igbaras, Iloilo.
It was the third power plant project proposed on Panay island after the RDC approved the implementation of the Villa Siga hydropower plant project in Barangay Igcosoro in Bugasong Antique and the Timbaban hydropower project in Ma. Cristina Madalag, Aklan.
Perez said the Villa Siga power plant will cost some P2.048 billion and will be funded by a Korean consortium. The Timbaban project, on the other hand, is estimated to cost $52.985 million and is to be funded by the Japanese government through the Japan Bank of International Cooperation.
%u201CWe expect that the projects when materialized will boost up investments in Panay since we already had a stable amount of electricity for the needs of the investors,%u201D Perez said.
Both hydropower projects is expected to provide 49.50 megawatts of additional power to Panay island and is expected to address a looming energy crisis in the Visayas. Jun Ariolo N. Aguirre

I really like the exterior and interior of IloIlo’s cathedral. While the exterior depicts a classical baroque form of architecture detailed with intricate carvings, the interior presents a vivid and colorful array of pattern, design and mosaic that can stir one’s senses.
This is the rose of all interiors. I like the balance, symmetrical pattern of the ceiling and the chandelier hangs onto it like a pearl pendant amidst the blushing heavens. The altar is like a greek-pillared temple fit to please a God.
http://static.flickr.com/90/245246301_8f10a8695c.jpg
The cool mosaic tiles look like marbles. They could be real marbles. The neutral pieces of marbles are a great background to the artsy and colorful paintings that reflect the glory of God and the celebration of life. The ceiling support maybe skeletal yet they hang up there like cool Eiffel grills bended to tailor fit a ceiling. Once again, the chandeliers are like clusters of pearls that lights up like bioluminescence.

MILKFISH producers from iloilo are looking to export more organically grown milkfish to the European Union by next year.
Iloilo Fish Producers Association Inc. president Antonio Paulino U. Buyco said the group has received technical assistance from the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) to find ways to penetrate the potentially lucrative niche market.
Iloilo milkfish are already finding their way into Europe through the EU-accredited processing facility of Sta. Cruz Foods in General Santos City.

bit too early for Philippine politics:
LIBERAL, LAKAS FLEX MUSCLES IN ILOILO
TWO major political groups converged in separate occasions in Iloilo City over the weekend in what is seen as loyalty checks relative to the upcoming 2007 elections.

Modern slaughterhouse to boost city’s meat industry
WITH the establishment of a high-technology triple-A class abattoir here, Iloilo City will have a “meaty share” of the wet markets in Manila, according to the Department of Agriculture (DA-6).
The facility was initially a double-A standard slaughterhouse but the DA wants to upgrade it to be more competitive by having a refrigeration system in order to process bigger volume of meat products for the Manila market.

I don't know how we'll take this but this is becoming Iloilo City's perennial problem already:
Badjaos keep coming back
“NOW you see them, now you don’t.”
As the Christmas season nears, more Badjaos are seen roaming around the city’s streets begging for alms.
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas said they are having a hard time gathering the “visiting Badjaos” for “deportation” back to their native place.
Weeks ago, the city government through the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) and Task Force Badjao had shipped a batch of Badjaos back to their original place in Mindanao weeks ago but a new batch of Badjaos replaced them.
......
CSWDO assistant chief Fred Villanueva said the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC-6) in the region has sent home as many as 40 Badjaos already.
“We have been talking with the management of local shipping companies plying to the south not to allow their ships to take them to Iloilo City,” Villanueva said.
Some Badjaos transferred to Iloilo from Bacolod City.

DoE eyes new plant in Iloilo
http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=regions04_oct02_2006
ILOILO CITY-The Department of Energy has proposed that another power plant be put up in Igbaras, Iloilo, the Western Visayas Regional Development Council announced over the weekend.
Antique Gov. and RDC chairman Salvacion Zaldivar-Perez said Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla said a hydropower plant is suitable in Barangay Igbolo in Igbaras, Iloilo.
Hope they'll approve the proposed power plant soon. Iloilo needs it badly. It'll be a good source of energy for the ever increasing power demand of Iloilo City and the whole of Iloilo province. Though we can source out energy help from other provinces of Panay, too, it would be much better if we have our very "own" here in Iloilo.

my kind of life. I'm always fascinated with photos or paintings of a man sailing in the midst of a calm river. For me, it's serenity at its best. Thanks IAMME.

Monument for ex-senator Ganzon to rise in Molo
A MONUMENT for the former senator, the late Rodolfo Ganzon, will rise in the district of Molo.
The creation of a monument was made possible by a resolution passed by the Iloilo City Council during its September 20, 2006 session.
Haligi Foundation Inc., through its founding chairman Councilor Jed Mabilog, requested this from the Council.
The monument will rise at the unnamed circle between Iloilo City National High School and Technical Institute of Iloilo City.
----
The monument will serve as a tribute to the man remembered by the Ilonggos as the "undisputed Stormy Petrel", "Fighting Colossus of the South", "Man of Destiny", "Maverick Politician and Veteran Legislator", "Champion of the Masses; Leader Par Excellence", and "Father of the Timawa".
