Cities That Could Steal Your Job

By Mark Scott

New Outsourcing Hot Spots
Sending jobs overseas is controversial in the best of times—and even more so when the recession is forcing layoffs all around. Just look at the proposal floated May 3 by U.S. President Barack Obama to tighten tax loopholes he says encourage companies to ship work abroad.

Yet in the hunt to shrink overhead, outsourcing continues unabated, particularly in the IT sector. Problem is, classic destinations such as Bangalore aren't as cheap as they used to be. Competition there among foreign firms has pushed up local costs, and staff turnover is high as well-trained employees jump to rivals. That's forcing clients to consider other places for outsourcing. From overlooked American cities such as Boise, Idaho and Winnipeg to more exotic locales like Cluj-Napoca, Romania, or the Philippines' Iloilo City, dozens of areas around the world are trying to grab a slice of the outsourcing business.

Obama's controversial plan to collect more taxes on foreign profits made by U.S. companies could tip the balance back towards domestic outsourcing. But there will always be other factors at play, so up-and-coming outsourcing destinations around the world still have room to grow. Click on to learn about 31 emerging global hot spots.

Wow, the news gets better and better ano? I hope Ilonggos recognize and appreciate all that the current officials have achieved for Iloilo in such a short period of time. Lain gid man kun maayo ang pagpadalagan sang gobyerno. I hope this encourages even more investors to set up shop in Iloilo.

Top business leaders to grace Iloilo Business Summit

ILOILO CITY, May 30 (PNA) -– Top business leaders in the country are expected to grace the Iloilo City Business Summit slated on July 29, 2011 at Sarabia Hotel here.

The activity will serve as venue for city mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog to present the business and economic roadmap of the city.

“We are ready,” said Felix Tiu, chairman of the Iloilo City Trade and Investment Promotions Board, “to present to the world the potentials of this southern city as the next important hub for business and priority destination.”

In a forum highlighting the 4th annual general membership assembly of the Iloilo Economic Development Foundation Inc (ILEDF) over the weekend, Tiu reported the current development strides of the city and the ongoing infrastructure projects eyed to help regain the lost title of “Queen City of the South.”

The Mabilog administration focuses 2011 as the city’s infrastructure year and many buildings and other major infras have started to rise this year.

Tiu said that among those invited to grace the business summit are the Philippines top businessmen and industrialists Fernando Zobel de Ayala of AyalaLand, Manuel V. Pangilinan of PLDT, Amb. Jess Tambunting, Loida Nicolas Lewis, Tessie S. Coson of SM Prime Holdings and Edgar “Injap” Sia of Mang Inasal fame to speak before the Iloilo business sector and be an inspiration to them.

The business summit is also expected to draw participation from other countries to come and see Iloilo City as the next important business and investment haven in Asia. (PNA)

BLUE CHIP EXECUTIVES
INVITED TO BIZ SUMMIT
By Francis Allan L. Angelo

TOP business honchos from the country’s blue-chip firms were invited to the Iloilo City Business Summit slated on July 29, 2011.

Felix Tiu, chair of the Iloilo City Trade and Investment Promotions Board (ICTIPB), said the summit aims to get pointers, impressions and testimonies from key business leaders on Iloilo City’s business investment potentials.

“We are ready to present to the world the potentials of this southern city as the next important hub for business and priority destination,” Tiu said during the general assembly of the Iloilo Economic Development Foundation (ILEDF) Saturday.

Among the keynote speakers invited by the ICTIPB to the summit are:

* Fernando Zobel de Ayala, chairman of Ayala Land;
* Manuel V. Pangilinan, chairman of Metro Pacific Investment Corp.;
* Ambassador Jesus Tambunting, chairman of Planters Development Bank;
* Loida Nicolas Lewis, chairperson of TLC Beatrice, LLC;
* Tessie Sy-Coson, vice chairperson of SM Investments;
* Edgar “Injap” Sia, chairman of Injap Investments.

Sia made waves in the national business scene when he put up Mang Inasal, a chain of roast chicken restaurant which he later sold to Jollibee Foods Corp. for a whooping P3 billion.

Ayala Land is set to inaugurate its Iloilo Technohub in Riverside Boardwalk area which will host business processes outsourcing firms.

SM has several investments in Iloilo City including SM City-Iloilo mall, SM Delgado, SM Jaro, Savemore in Quintin Salas, Jaro and SM Hypermarket in Commission Civil Street, Jaro.

“Out of the six powerful speakers, we have already received two commitments. We hope to get at least four speakers from this lineup before end’s month,” Tiu said.

Tiu said Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog will report the accomplishments of his one-year-old administration and present an economic road map for the city.

SOON A TOURIST DESTINATION. The P150-million Iloilo River Esplanade project of Sen. Franklin Drilon is seen to become Iloilo City’s next tourist attraction. (Photo by Tara Yap)

P150-M Esplanade to rise along Iloilo River
By Francis Allan L. Angelo

A NEW tourist destination will rise along the Iloilo River to complement the Dinagyang Festival 2012, according to Sen. Franklin Drilon.

Drilon said he set aside P150 million from his priority development fund (PDAF) for the Iloilo River Esplanade project that will stretch some three kilometers from Carpenter’s Bridge in Molo, Iloilo to the “Railway” or Drilon Bridge at Brgy. Rizal in Lapuz, LaPaz.

An esplanade is a long, open, level area, usually next to a river or large body of water, where people may walk, dine and do other recreational activities.

Renowned architect Paulo Alcazaren, the developer of the popular Singapore Quay, was tasked to draw the design for the Iloilo River Esplanade.

“The engineering design of the esplanade will be available in June and we expect the bidding of the project in July. If plans push through, the first phase esplanade from Carpenter’s Bridge to Diversion Road area where Barbecue Park once stood will be finished in time for the Dinagyang festival in 2012,” Drilon said.

Aside from becoming a tourist attraction in Iloilo City, Drilon said the esplanade will raise awareness on the protection and preservation of the city’s major body of water.

The Ilonggo senator said the only tourism jewel in Western Visayas is Boracay Island in Aklan province which some three hours away from the city.

“What about Guimaras? It is an untapped tourism jewel. When tourists come to Iloilo, they ask ‘What shall we do there aside from eating?’ Thus, we embarked on clearing up the river and initiating the esplanade to spur our development,” Drilon said.

Multi-agency efforts in clearing the banks and waters of Iloilo River has resulted in the dredging of 250,000 cubic meters of silt which is already 25% of the Philippine Ports Authority’s (PPA) quota in terms of dredged materials in the country.

The Department of Public Works and Highways also dispatched a dredging machine at the Muelle Loney area up to Rizal, Lapuz. A smaller machine will be available in August to dredge smaller creeks.

The dredging is seen to bring the depth of the river from 1 meter to 7 meters.

Four out of 10 identified derelicts and 27 of 38 idle vessels in the river were already removed since February 2011 while illegal structures such as Barbecue Park, Roy’s Manokan and fishpens were also dismantled.

Drilon said he also asked the PPA to come up with a three-year plan to transfer wharf operations from Muelle Loney area to the international port in Loboc, LaPaz.

The PPA plans to extend the 400-meter international port by another 400 so it can accommodate more vessels.

South Korea gov’t studying
P15-B Jalaur River project
By Francis Allan L. Angelo

SENATOR Franklin M. Drilon said he has invited the South Korean government to help fund the P15-billion Jalaur River Multipurpose Project (JRMP) II in Iloilo province.

Speaking at the 4th general membership assembly of the Iloilo Economic Development Foundation, Inc. (ILEDF) Saturday, Drilon said he presented the project to Joong-Kyung Choi, South Korea’s minister of knowledge economy and former ambassador to the Philippines.

“I presented the project to him last week for possible funding by the Korean ExIm Bank (Export-Import Bank of Korea). The project has quite a big funding requirement,” Drilon said.

After the meeting in Korea, Drilon said a seven-man Korean Technical Team went to the project site in Calinog, Iloilo May 25-27 to look into the specifics.

Once the technical team submits its report, the Korean ExIm bank will bid out the revalidation of the Jalaur feasibility study. The revalidation report will then pave the way for the signing of an agreement between the agriculture departments of Korea and the Philippines on the implementation of the project.

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) will also evaluate the 30-year loan for the project which has an interest of one-tenth of 1%.

Drilon said he will also present the development to President Benigno Simeon Aquino III.

“I intend to brief the President on this week and I hope to get his go signal before we can proceed further,” he said.

The Ilonggo senator said he is working hard to ensure that the memorandum of agreement on the JRMP will be signed between the two countries when South Korean Lee Myung-bak visits the Philippines in November 2011.

“I am confident that if plans do no miscarry, we can start the execution of the project by January 2013,” he said.

PROJECT COMPONENTS

The JRMPII is seen to provide various agricultural and industrial needs of the city and province of Iloilo.

The project can irrigate year-round an estimated 34,430 hectares of agricultural land in 24 towns of the provinces.

It can also generate about 11.5 megawatts of hydro-electric power and provide potable bulk water supply for domestic and industrial use in nearby towns, including Iloilo City.

The Department of Agriculture will choose the Korean company that will develop the Jalaur hydro-power and bulk water supply components.

P1.9-B ROADS SEEN TO DECONGEST CITY
By Francis Allan L. Angelo

TWO major road projects seen to decongest Iloilo City and its suburbs will be included in the 2012 national budget.

Senator Franklin Drilon, chair of the Senate committee on finance, said the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is conducting technical evaluation of the 14-km. Circumferential Road 1 (C1) project which will cost P1.9 billion.

The C1 project would cut across the outer periphery of Iloilo City from Brgy. Buntalala in Jaro to Arevalo district, passing through portions of Pavia town.
Drilon said he met with Iloilo City Rep. Jerry P. Treñas and DPWH officials at Hotel del Rio Saturday to discuss the C1 project and the proposed widening of the national highway starting from the Montinola Bridge in Jaro, or better known to city residents as “Tabuk Suba” to Leganes town.

“We will push hard to get these projects implemented. It’s time Iloilo gets its rightful share of the national pie after being neglected for so long,” Drilon said during the general assembly of the Iloilo Economic Development Foundation, Inc. Saturday.

Drilon said he can easily defend funding for the project, just like what he did to the controversial conditional cash transfer of the national government.

“If I can defend the P21-billion conditional cash transfer program, how much more a road project worth P1.9 billion,” he said.

The Montinola Bridge-Leganes road widening project, which will cost P281 million, is seen to ease the traffic by adding two more lanes to the four-lane thoroughfare.

Drilon said he also required DPWH to look into the widening of the BS Aquino Drive, popularly known as Diversion Road, in Mandurriao district.

The Diversion Road is a key artery from downtown Iloilo and Metro Iloilo towns to the new growth center in Mandurriao which hosts a mall and major land developments of blue-chip firms Ayala Land Corp. and Megaworld Corp.

Treñas said he is working to repair minor concerns such as the badly-damaged road portion in Rizal, Lapuz near the Foremost Milling Co., which will cost P4 million, complex to ensure the smooth flow of vehicular traffic and cargo movement.

ROADS TO GROWTH

The Iloilo Business Club (IBC) has been pushing for the C1 project and other road networks that will spur growth in outlying areas of Metro Iloilo.

Last year, the IBC and the Research, Education and Institutional Development (REID) Foundation, Inc. rendered a report on key road networks that will complement Iloilo City’s growth and expansion.

REID, in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) The Asia Foundation (TAF), assisted the IBC in identifying road projects which local officials should prioritize.

The main road project is the P1.9-billion C1 project which will interlink with the Montinola Bridge, Jaro-Leganes Road (P281 million); by-pass road from the Jaro floodway to Leganes (P280 million); Jalandoni Bridge-Diversion Road link (P175 million) and Antique-Iloilo coastal road.

The REID report said these priority road projects in the city and province are needed to ensure well-managed urbanization and equitable growth.

The REID report highlighted the importance of the Circumferential Road 1 (C1) project in connecting Iloilo City to outlying towns and promoting new economic hubs.

“The proposed road network will provide easy access to Pavia (municipality), the Iloilo International Port (in LaPaz, Iloilo City) and the new airport in Cabatuan-Sta. Barbara towns. Settlements will mushroom around these zones as people attempt to stay near as possible to these areas for their income sources and employment,” the REID report said.

The report also said that areas within the C1 project will experience significant growth of settlements that will accommodate both transient and permanent residents.

“Expectedly, the districts of Arevalo, Molo and Jaro (in Iloilo City) will continue developing as centers of settlements. Rapid growth of settlements in the municipalities of Pavia, Leganes, Oton and San Miguel will continue owing to the spillover of population to these areas from the city. These settlements will thus help spur the development of ancillary services and facilities.”

The C1 project is viewed as the best option as economic activities are in the offing with its constructions.

“For example, developments from the Jaro-Leganes highway, proceeding along the Diversion Road, connecting with the central business district (in downtown Iloilo City) and the LaPaz-Dumangas coastal road, further to Poblacion Molo with Oton will generate commercial activities going south.”

Rotten ships, illegal structures
disappearing from Iloilo River
BY JEZZA NEPOMOCENO

ILOILO City – The removal of idle and rotten vessels from the Iloilo River is nearly complete, according to the Iloilo River Development Council.

In a meeting with Sen. Franklin Drilon recently, the council reported that 33 out of 48 rotten ships have been successfully removed from the mouth of the Iloilo River in Fort San Pedro.

Major illegal structures such as the Barbeque Park restaurant, Ryan’s Seafood Bar and Grill, A1 Shipbuilder and Repair Corp. and a yatch docking area have also been demolished, the council added.

Seventy-five illegal fishpen operators have also started removing their fishpens after receiving P10,000 cash assistance each from the city government.

What remains to be removed are 79 houses of informal settlers near Carperter’s Bridge and the old barangay hall of Brgy. Taal in the City Proper.

The illegal structures and some rotten ships are not only eyesores; they also pollute the Iloilo River (arm of the sea), according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Drilon expects the remaining illegal structures and idle vessels to be removed before the construction of the P150-million esplanade along the river starts this July.

Drilon, whose office will fund the project, said he has tapped the services of Architect Paolo Alcazaren, a renowned Filipino architect who designed an esplanade in Singapore.

The construction of the 2.5-kilometer esplanade will start from Treñas Boulevard in Mandurriao district to the Drilon Bridge in La Paz district.

It is expected to be finish before the Dinagyang Festival next year./PN

City to face power problem ‘in 2-3 years’

Monday, May 30, 2011

ILOILO City will again face power problem in two to three years with the influx of investors and business locators, a businessman said.

Rex Drilon of Ortigas Co. said the unprecedented economic growth of the city could mean power problem, given insufficient power supply in the city.

This calls for an additional power supply, Drilon, who also serves as vice chairman of Iloilo Economic Development Foundation Inc. (ILEDF), said.

Drilon was in Iloilo over the weekend to participate in the 4th annual general assembly of the association composed of Ilonggo business leaders based in Metro Manila.

The current power problem of the city was solved with the recent opening of the 164-megawatt coal-fired power plant at Ingore, La Paz, Iloilo City.

The power supply was then divided to power suppliers in Panay Island, particularly in the city and province of Iloilo through power purchase agreements.

However, the coal-fired power supply of Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC) and its sister diesel company Global Business Power Corp are not enough to feed the needs of big corporations to come this year, Drilon said.

He added there is a need for a private sector to come in and invest on base load power plants notwithstanding the emergence of several alternative power sources from biomass, wind, solar and water. (Lydia C. Pendon)

UP Visayas, Miag-ao mark
30 years of partnership
BY ELSA S. SUBONG

MIAG-AO, Iloilo – The University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) and its host municipality, Miag-ao, celebrate their 30 years of partnership today by holding the 1st UPV and Miag-ao Friendship Day.

The event is anchored on the theme “Celebrating Friendship and Togetherness for 30 years.” It will be graced by people who helped built a strong foundation for UPV.

Adora Bandorio-Mande, information officer of Miag-ao, said the affair will kick off with a foot parade from the town plaza to the UP Covered Gym, followed by a Thanksgiving Mass, and a message from Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. who was the legal officer of UPV in the 1970s when negotiations for the university’s presence in Miag-ao were underway.

The highlight of the event is a “Pasidungog” at the Justice Ramon B. Britanico Hall at 2 p.m.

Among those expected to attend are Cong. Sonny Angara, former Cong. Salvador Britanico, former Antique Gov. Salvacion Perez and UP System President Alfredo Parceral.

Also expected are first UPV Chancellor Dr. Dionesia Rola, former Chancellor and UP System President Dr. Francisco Nemenzo, former Chancellor Ida Siason, and former Miag-ao Mayor Erlinda Britanico.

The UP System Board of Regents approved the establishment of UPV with the main campus in Miag-ao, on May 31, 1979.

Actual construction started in 1981, with the physical facilities for the flagship college, the College of Fisheries.

The different units of the university started transferring between the mid-1980s until mid-1990s.

The original choice for UPV was Cabano, Jordan, Guimaras. Likewise, the municipality of Tigbauan also vied for UPV’s presence considering the proximity of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC).

It was then Assemblyman Salvador Britanico who lobbied for the Miag-ao location. (PIA-Iloilo/PN)

thanks for the beautiful aerial images of the city!
personally daku gid ni nga bulig as a reference.
though we are small in land area pero maunod gid! amo lang ta ni gakamay pero at par ta sa dalagku nga city centers sa Vis-Min. ginakaya sang ekonomiya ta nga gamay ta sa land area, indi ko manugid kon ngaa. lol..
indi lang gid maintindihan sang iban ang geographical situation sang aton nga metropolitan area kag kon diin sila nabelong sa sistema, may identity crisis gid tood.
and there are still room for expansions and future developments..nga in not so distant future will come realized. may mabutong gid na padalom pero sige lang, PADAUN ta ah!!
That is why, it was a good initiative for the authorities within MIDC and Guimaras to start MIGEDC or Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Dev't Council. A lot says that its only for namesake since MIDC are still under Iloilo province. I said that it is more of integrating urban planning thru socio-economic development that would synchronize the city center with its peripheries.

Given that we have only 70+square kilometers of land area in Iloilo City and density almost competing with Tokyo's, it is indeed inevitable that the urban conglomeration would expand out of its borders. The 2007 Census state that MIDC towns has a combined population of 219,132 with Pavia stating the highest population growth of about 4%. The total population of Iloilo City and MIDC towns is about 637,842 (sans Guimaras which has 151,238). Although Iloilo Province and Iloilo City are below the national population growth average, I just hope that the infrastructure projects would be equal to its population growth to prevent overcrowding and therefore another demise in its competency.

That is why, if I have to market Iloilo City for "urban investors," I would prefer to carry the rest of MIGEDC with it. For one, within MIGEDC there is no monopoly of power and water (well, Guimaras has its own, hehe!), two is variety and three is the large expanse of land that can be developed by real estate investors.

pasensiya kay mag gagmay dalan ta di, pareho sang mga old cities of Europe mo,
okey lang kon gamay ah, at least may naga agi..
law ay kon lapad... mga hangin lang laban ang naga agi..
Yet to be honest, our city is one big messed up urban planning since it is a conglomeration of six settlements merged as one. If the Philippines back then and Iloilo diversified its economy, and WW2 haven't come, the Arellano Plan may have been pushed through.

Yet we are now faced with the limitations of our city. The best we can do is to manage vehicular traffic itself, starting with limiting our seemingly overcrowded PUJs, most especially Jaro CPU. Second would be implementing the CLUP 2010 with strict adherence--we cannot mix up light industrial with residential or put up residential areas without access to public transport, etc--oh yeah, we also have to promote the use of public transportation. Third, since the downtown areas are already built up, we can still widen up the new major thoroughfares of Iloilo City, especially linking up the city center to its residential areas. I believe that wide avenues and major thoroughfares outside of the established old city center would keep the blood circulation flowing within the city.

For Calle Real area however, we couldn't discount the fact that we have a sidewalk culture or economy. Therefore, closing Aldeguer, Guanco and JM Basa is one solution to allow the local economic center thrive in a dying city center while implementing some rules regarding conservation. Its a 1-2 punch for the city center redevelopment.

European and even some Asian countries have narrow roads yet they still thrive and city centers still bustling alive. In urban planning, wide roads are just one of the components of economic development, but without efficient traffic management, then what's the use of it?

Statistics provided by KPMG and the World Bank

na baisa ang Bloomberg Businessweek...
I just wish she can steal me and my job back there.

Kay taking them out of there is both beneficial for the city, the environment and the safety of informal settlers themselves.

(Lydia C. Pendon)

And I hope they can respond quickly unlike before. Since we have investors already, they can charge up their investments. Visayas is one big market and the rest of the Philippines for this matter, for energy companies to invest. However, the question remains: How can we make our national average energy cost more competitive and reliable with the rest of the world?

The historical flavours of Iloilo

Whats there to do in Iloilo? I texted the organizer of our trip a week before the departure date. We'll eat batchoy, he texted back with a smiley face attached at the end of the message. Batchoy? What was so special about batchoy from Iloilo?

When we finally landed in Iloilo, I learned that batchoy was invented here and that this soupy noodle dish is one of the many things the Ilonggos are very proud of.

Iloilo City is the capital of Iloilo, one of four provinces that occupies Panay island in the Visayas region (the others are Antique, Aklan, and Capiz), and is actually independent from its mother province. Because of its strategic location and the presence of an international airport (the fourth busiest in the country) a half hour away, Iloilo City is considered the gateway to the Western Visayas region, which, apart from the aforementioned provinces, also includes Guimaras and Negros Occidental. It is also the country’s second oldest city (the oldest is Cebu City), which makes it one of the earliest regions in the Philippines discovered by Spanish colonizers and where they built their settlements.

http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j374/apriljayn/inspirations-487509565-1280218504.jpg

This colonization is quite evident in the architecture. As you drive through downtown Iloilo, particularly through Calle Real (now known as JM Basa Street), try and ignore the tacky billboards, garish signs, and thick tangle of black electric wires and you will see beautifully designed old buildings. Unfortunately, many of these buildings have been left to decay or overtaken by commerce and turned into hardware stores or panciterias. You can’t help but wish that these colonial buildings were protected and maintained by the local government. They could follow the example of many major European cities—the facades of these old structures could be preserved, but the insides gutted and developed into charming cafés, quirky shops, or even small boutique hotels. In the 19th century, this row was the liveliest commercial district as it was the site of most of the town’s European and Chinese retailers.

During the city’s economic boom, thanks in large part to the development of the sugar industry in Iloilo and the neighboring Negros island, families turned their properties into farms for sugar production because there was a high demand for the sweet stuff in the world market. The Jaro district of Iloilo became the Philippines’ first “millionaires’ row” because many wealthy sugar barons built their sprawling mansions there. At the height of their affluence, we can imagine the illustrious families of Iloilo like the Lopezes, the Ledesmas, the Villanuevas, the Lizareses, the Montinolas, the Jalandonis, the Javellanas, and the Locsins, lounging in the verandas of their stately homes, playing croquet in the expansive lawn, or holding huge parties in the lavishly decorated salas.

These days, imagine is all a tourist can do. Many of these huge heritage houses have been abandoned because their owners have either migrated to other cities like Manila or Bacolod, or died. Some which have been left to caretakers are open for viewing by appointment or available to be rented for parties and events.

http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j374/apriljayn/inspirations-71238849-1280218503.jpg

One of the most attractive is the elegant white mansion called Nelly Garden, built in 1928 and once owned by philanthropist and statesman Don Vicente Lopez and his wife Doña Elena Hofileña. Another notable house is the 200-year-old Casa Mariquit, considered one of the oldest existing houses in Iloilo and where the Javellana family once resided (one of the family members, Maria Mariquit Javellana lived there with her husband, the former vice-president of the Philippines, Fernando Lopez, Sr.). Our group managed to enter the brick-based house and surprised the caretakers—they were in the process of cleaning and sprucing it up for tourists. However, they were kind enough to tour us inside, while giving us a history lesson on its former occupants.

But the most stunning of all has to be the grand Lizares Mansion, which was built in 1937. Rumor has it that after the war broke out, family members were killed, and the mansion was used as a garrison by the Japanese. It then remained unoccupied for years till it was turned into a casino by gambling lords in the 1950s. By the 1960s, the mansion was purchased by Dominican friars for the discounted price of P50,000. It was then renovated and it eventually became the Angelicum School. If you visit Iloilo City during the holiday season, be sure to pass by the school at night—every Christmas, the building is beautifully decorated and lit up.

After our drive by rows of rundown colonial-style buildings and abandoned heritage homes, it was time to visit a few old churches—for a change, it was good to observe efforts to preserve and maintain the churches, perhaps because they are always in use as places of worship. The first church in Iloilo was built in the early 1600s by the Jesuits to serve the needs of the military stationed there. As the province was the setting for early “civilization” in the country, the natural progression was for the Spanish colonizers to build churches there. Today, you will find many with stunning Baroque and Gothic designs.

We visited the Jaro Cathedral, which was built in 1864 and is distinct for its collection of life-sized statues of male saints perched on the columns inside. But outside, there is a statue of Our Lady of Candles (her feast day is on February 2) encased in glass and visited daily by devotees. The Madonna and Child is considered “miraculous” because it keeps growing in size, necessitating its transfer and change of glass case every year. The image originally occupied a spot by the altar inside the church; it is said that after a visit and a blessing by Pope Paul VI in 1982, the statue began to grow in size and had to be moved outside. The belfry is another unique feature of this cathedral—it is one of the few in the country that stands apart from the church (in fact, it is located across the street).

There are many other old churches to visit within the city, like San Jose Church (located right in front of Plaza Libertad) and Molo Church (the “feminist” church because of the presence of at least 16 images of female saints). If you dare venture a little road trip, however, we highly recommend the Miag-ao Church. Located some 40 kilometers southwest of Iloilo City, this over-200-year-old structure was declared a national landmark in 1973 and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list of “Baroque Churches in the Philippines” in 1993. It also holds the distinction of being one of the most photographed churches in the country, thanks to its unique architectural style. The façade has a decorative bas relief described as “native botanical,” featuring papaya and guava trees and a large coconut tree in the center, and flanked by two dissimilar bell towers.

Batchoy, biscocho, and more

http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j374/apriljayn/inspirations-133905816-1280218504.jpg

Lest you think these architectural gems are the highlight of a tour of Iloilo City, locals will always take the time to make you taste their food. Ask any Ilonggo what there is to do in their fine city and they will almost certainly answer “Eat!” And at the top of the list is batchoy.

http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j374/apriljayn/inspirations-171981543-1280218503.jpg

Batchoy is a hearty noodle soup dish that includes pork innards, crushed chicharon (pork rinds), vegetables, shrimp, chicken breast or beef loin, shrimp broth, and chicken stock, and topped with spring onions and chopped fried garlic. The original version used miki noodles, but to meet customers’ demands, other varieties were developed using miswa, bihon, and sotanghon noodles.

There is much debate on who invented the batchoy. Deco’s and Ted’s, two of the most popular batchoy restaurants in Iloilo, both claim to have concocted this filling dish. The original owners, Frederico Guillergan Sr. and Teodorico Lepura, respectively, each started out experimenting with a basic Chinese noodle soup back in the 1930s. They then opened up batchoy stalls in the public market and eventually expanded. One thing is for sure, though: It originated in the district of La Paz, Iloilo; hence its full name of La Paz batchoy indicates that you are eating batchoy, Iloilo-style.

Another source of Iloilo pride is the seafood. Many seafood restaurants line Villa beach and the most popular, no doubt, is Breakthrough. Tourists and locals alike head to this sprawling open-air restaurant, where you can pick out the fish, crab, lobster, or prawns you want cooked your way. Another must-visit restaurant is Tatoy’s Manokan & Seafoods. Their specialty is barbecued whole chicken stuffed with tamarind and lemongrass leaves and, of course, grilled seafood. These seaside eateries are generally very casual and you may even want to eat with your hands.

After three days of sightseeing and eating, the group was ready for some pasalubong shopping. At the top of my list was biscocho, the one thing my dad asked for when I told him I was going to Iloilo. Personally, I didn’t get the thrill of eating a crunchy piece of toasted bread heavily buttered to the point of turning yellow, but the province has made a whole industry out of it. You can find many brands of biscocho in supermarkets and souvenir shops, but we were told the best if from Biscocho Haus, found all over town and practically an institution in Iloilo.

By the way, has anyone of you watched Amaya yesterday?

I have a glimpse so far. Looks like Visayan but to no reference where in the Visayas it is (if they are to base it with Gaspar's account). They used the term "banwa" referring to the fiefdom of the datus, "bana" for husband and was in adherence with what the profs at UP taught of.

Na, mu na. Tan-awon ta anay before kita mag-conclude (referring to a Facebook page somewhere).

Meanwhile the current tenants are to be assisted by the city government in procuring properties in the kapideco and IBP New CBDs so that they can be situated in areas where business will be highly concentrated in a few years time.sa pagkabalo ko sa KAPIDECO wala na bilin lote da, may tag iya na tanan, gapreparar na ang iban da butang ila building, gahulathulat lang gid sila nga mag full operate na gid ang Ateneo de Iloilo.

Kanami na gid mag puli sa iloilo ah.

I did. Looks promising. Very Visayan indeed. Even their names (i.e Binayaan?). I just didn't like the singing parts, but it's an epicserye (epiko) and they're mostly singing....

Also, some parts that i didn't like:

- the war scene... daw on a state of berserk lang ang mga warriors... no "coolness" factor... no "art"

- the Punong Babylan's warning (was she on trance?)... She was out of focus... needed more "kilabot" moments.

-The editing. enuf' said

Overall, it's great... I wanna watch it again.

In similar manner that you cannot judge the rest of the 'season' based on the pilot episode alone, IMHO.

We just have to wait and see til GMA bastardize everything like they always do with their telebabad shows. History tells us about how they awfully changed Captain Barbel origin story etc.:bash:

About the 2 PMs. Hopefully everything will push through.:okay::cheers:

Lastly, looking forward for the Ground Breaking of Medicus and Injap21, June 10 and 31 respectively!:okay:

What can you expect from Kapuso network when it comes to production? LOL!

I was focusing on the historicity and how they execute culture of pre-Hispanic Philippines.

The Punong Babaylanes were known to change gender when in trance. They may be female but they turn into male. The old folks even said that they can change the weather.

They do that and they'll feel the wrath of those whom they have consulted with. What happened to Rosalinda and Mari Mar? :bash: Zorro even! Hay!

The difficulty with periodical teleseryes is that it needs intense research. One mistake and the whole academe and even sectors of government (NCCA, NHCP) will complain--daku nga damage ina sa production.

I just wish ABSCBN would also create an epicserye such as that. We have seen too many Koreanovelas in just one sitting.

That is why, it was a good initiative for the authorities within MIDC and Guimaras to start MIGEDC or Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Dev't Council. A lot says that its only for namesake since MIDC are still under Iloilo province. I said that it is more of integrating urban planning thru socio-economic development that would synchronize the city center with its peripheries.and really others don't get it.

Although Iloilo Province and Iloilo City are below the national population growth average, I just hope that the infrastructure projects would be equal to its population growth to prevent overcrowding and therefore another demise in its competency. the studies and planning has always been there all this time. where to get the budget making it has always been the question, good thing now is the regular regional development council meetings that harmonizes and consolidates projects, Zynet knows more and recent press releases gives us the idea of what infrastructures are in the pipeline. Indi na lang sila mag lain boot kon may Drilon ta subong kay sang una may Benidicto man sila ah, galing ang aton indi crony.

That is why, if I have to market Iloilo City for "urban investors," I would prefer to carry the rest of MIGEDC with it. For one, within MIGEDC there is no monopoly of power and water (well, Guimaras has its own, hehe!), two is variety and three is the large expanse of land that can be developed by real estate investors.it's the whole package! it we have it now, eat live work in an island scale.

Yet to be honest, our city is one big messed up urban planning since it is a conglomeration of six settlements merged as one. If the Philippines back then and Iloilo diversified its economyon hindsight, back then, there was no foresight to speak of,rich Ilonggos went to the important commodities that time, sugar and salt. their never really bothered to prepare the succession

and WW2 haven't come, the Arellano Plan may have been pushed through.if you ask me, after the war was the perfect time for that Plan to push through.

Yet we are now faced with the limitations of our city. The best we can do is to manage vehicular traffic itself, starting with limiting our seemingly overcrowded PUJs, most especially Jaro CPU.
no more new franchise and those old franchises should have a ten year effectivity after that they should renew, in effect there is control

Second would be implementing the CLUP 2010 with strict adherence--we cannot mix up light industrial with residential or put up residential areas without access to public transport, etc^^ I believe its reverse, put the development, transport will come..

we also have to promote the use of public transportation.
Iloilo based are known to be practical when it comes to using vehicles, trust me on this one, to be objective about it..give the me the reasons to use it.. clean, secured, comfortable, cheap transport system

Third, since the downtown areas are already built up, we can still widen up the new major thoroughfares of Iloilo City, especially linking up the city center to its residential areas. I believe that wide avenues and major thoroughfares outside of the established old city center would keep the blood circulation flowing within the city. seen the recent aerials?
bridges, more bridges

For Calle Real area however, we couldn't discount the fact that we have a sidewalk culture or economy. Therefore, closing Aldeguer, Guanco and JM Basa is one solution to allow the local economic center thrive in a dying city center while implementing some rules regarding conservation. Its a 1-2 punch for the city center redevelopment.cluster each on a specific street, tyangees here, textiles there, bars here, restos and cafes there.. set it up like a big open air type of mall. Malls are a prefect example how to plan a business zone

European and even some Asian countries have narrow roads yet they still thrive and city centers still bustling alive.
the new CBD should be in full swing so that the transition will soften the impact to businesses

In urban planning, wide roads are just one of the components of economic development, but without efficient traffic management, then what's the use of it?wide roads for new growth areas, command and control for the old one-
I say what's the use of wide roads when vehicles seldom uses it because no study was made to back it up and either because the roads where built for personal kickbacks and the city roads in a virtual ghostown because in reality businesses is pacing slow.

I just wish she can steal me and my job back there.
what keeping you from it? lol

Pahalinon na nila tani ang mga informal settlers sa higad baybay para mas maglimpyo pa guid ang baybayon ta kag indi taas ang coliform levels sa Villa Beach. Kay taking them out of there is both beneficial for the city, the environment and the safety of informal settlers themselves.
it's a looong process but it has started, hopefully it will be fast

And I hope they can respond quickly unlike before. Since we have investors already, they can charge up their investments. Visayas is one big market and the rest of the Philippines for this matter, for energy companies to invest.plans/proposals are in place, roll the dice pls.

However, the question remains: How can we make our national average energy cost more competitive and reliable with the rest of the world?
as a national leader pre empt the deficit, build now. Powerplants are not done overnight

as a city leader, flex some muscles of PECO and open the market for more diverse sources of power

as a household.. go solar, go wind..lessen the dependence on PECO as source of power, invest on new tech household appliances, laptops instead of desktops

I remember Sir Butch Peñalosa told me, MIGEDC is not prestige. Its an initiative. Better have it this early than react like what Manila did.

no more new franchise and those old franchises should have a ten year effectivity after that they should renew, in effect there is control
I see. The moratorium of franchise, I forgot. Yet IMO, there's too much Jaro CPU jeepneys than any other route that we have.

In fairness to Divisoria, although very much chaotic, yet it has a "section" in which goods are located. Go to Tabora for this and go to Recto for that--although ambiguous. I think Oboi can give us some clarification on that.

I agree though regarding "putting sections at Calle Real."

what keeping you from it? lol
Lack of opportunity.

[QUOTE=spacewagon0001;78712864]P1.9-B ROADS SEEN TO DECONGEST CITY

Maybe its just me having this. Nugon. We may teach the people, especially the masses, about Philippine culture using what we have now. I applaud their initiative and the pilot episode was satisfying--in historicity. Production? Masyadong "kapuso" standard.

However, like @Metro pointed out, lets see in the next few weeks if they'll suck up again like what they did to other remakes and teleseryes. Because if they indeed suck up, patay sila.

Regarding Marian............kagwapa sa imo teh, indi ka na lang mag-hambal! ROFL!

^^for me, its a done deal, I've prejudged it the moment it went to pre selling the idea
the budget for authenticity and the initial investments return will be sufficed in a month's time.
and I honestly think there are clauses in the contract for protection agaisnt negatism criticism from within.
then ratings will come in, if it sucked, they will close shop.if it rakes in huge monee..milk it like a cashcow for as long as it takes.
hey it's Philippine Free TV. It's all about the money, it won't change.

Marian is feisty, i like that in a woman..

What can you expect from Kapuso network when it comes to production? LOL!

^^
Well, I am not expecting that much. I only watched Amaya yesterday out of curiosity and maybe the next few weeks on how they will weave BINUKOT into the storyline and from there, I will start my ranting just in case.

RE: Rosalinda, Mari Mar, Zorro etc. Yup, those were bastardized by GMA and same with other remakes that they do. And yes as @4threich pointed out, its a rating game. If the show sucked, its axed!

I wish the same thing for ABS CBN or even TV5 to do a Binukot story that is worth telling and close to the real thing. If not a TV series, maybe a movie perhaps? Sort of a mash up of historical fiction and era film genre (I love the period film Rosario that TV5 did, maybe they can make a Binukot period film in the midst of World War 2 with ala John Smith & Pocahontas as an inspiration where the Binukot fell in love with a lost American soldier and the Japanese threat of total invasion as a backdrop and filmed in scenic Lambunao mountain ranges showcasing Tinagong Dagat etc, just my wild imaginaton I guess LOL )

Koreanovelas are simply thriving because it has better storylines, acting (not so sure though since its dubbed) and better production I guess.

as a national leader pre empt the deficit, build now. Powerplants are not done overnight

as a city leader, flex some muscles of PECO and open the market for more diverse sources of power

as a household.. go solar, go wind..lessen the dependence on PECO as source of power, invest on new tech household appliances, laptops instead of desktops

as a person conserve electricity, make love without the lights on.

Dinagyang Festival to perform in New York

Posted by iloilonews on May 31, 2011 in Headline, Iloilo News

Dinagyang Festival contingent will perform in Philippine Independence Day Parade in Madison Avenue, New York.

Dubbed as Philippines’ “Queen of Festivals”, Dinagyang was invited by Philippine Independence Day Council, Inc. (PIDCI) together with Vice President Jejomar Binay and other luminaries to grace the annual event on June 5.

Vice President Binay will be the Guest of Honor of the Philippine Independence Day Parade, while the more than 30-some-odd-person Dinagyang Festival contingent will be its main feature and that of the Cultural Festival, two of the three major events held on the same day of the months-long, multi-event 113th commemoration of Philippine Independence. Organized, executed, directed and presented by the Philippine Independence Day Council in New York, the commemoration, now on its 22nd year, has enjoyed the proud reputation among Filipinos and their friends worldwide of being the largest celebration of Philippine Independence outside of the Philippines for the last 17 years.

Philippine Independence Day Parade has become the largest outdoor gathering of Filipinos in the Diaspora. In 2008 the singing sensation Charice was the main feature of the Cultural Festival; and last year, New York Police Department (NYPD) official estimates of the crowd of participants, onlookers and others at Philippine Independence Day was 70,000 persons.

Dinagyang will perform in New York, June 5

Some of those who have also been invited by PIDCI to Philippine Independence Day are, from the Philippine Government, Congressman and No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer Emmanuel D. Pacquiao, Congressmen Rufus and Maximo B. Rodriguez, Jr. Congressman Jerry P. Treñas of the lone district of Iloilo, Agrarian Reform Undersecretary Gerundio Madueno, Iloilo Governor Arthur D. Defensor, Sr. Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Escalante Mabilog, Tourism Regional Director Edwin G. Trompeta, Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose L. Cuisia, Jr., Consul General Mario L. de Leon, Jr., and Ambassador to the U.N. Libran N. Cabactulan.

From the US Government: US Senators from New York Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand, N.Y. Representative Carolyn B. Maloney, N.Y. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, among others.

I'm sorry for the abbreviation/jargon. PR stands for "press release" or "image," not Panay Railways or Page Ranking (for SEO peeps out there, hehe!)

What I meant was that the Circumferential Road 1 has so many press releases as compared to the R-4 By Pass Road which is already under-construction.

hehhe abi ko panay railway. my bad :bash::bash:

gani just because it will be fund by Foreign kag ang budget dako.
tama lang ini ka popuar tungod sang endorsement sang private sector

gin compare ko lng ang duha
ang nadumduman ko ang R-4 start between. 2004 and 2005 national govt funding 12km road. pero 2 lane lang sya with 4 bridges d ko sure. about sa iya ROW acquisition nd tama ka mahal just bcoz of mostly agri land then gin implement phase by phase and covered by two congressional district (iloilo city Lone and 2nd district) tapos ang iya sang city just only 2+km kag amo lng na sa sbong nabilin.

sa C1 namn 4 lane road with bicycle lane and 5 bridges covered of 3 congressional district (1st, 2nd and Iloilo City Lone District), this road project was study by japan JICA kag plan to fund by International fund inst. about namn sa ROW tama ini ka mahal mga lot nga madalasa mga prime lots pa.
ang activity nga sa sbong amo plang ang Parcillary Mapping.

Amb. Jess Tambunting is the majority owner of Planters Bank (http://www.plantersbank.com.ph/about-us/).

So more or less if they own that lot in Trenas Boulevard, would that be an SME Park like in Cebu? Just my guess.

Basa ko sa PEP:

PEP Review: Amaya takes a bold step epic storytelling. The TV series is inspired by a 2004 documentary about a tribe found in Panay-Bukidnon.

Loida with her 2 daughters.

A lawyer by profession, Loida is also an author, a philanthropist, and an active leader of the Filipino community in the United States. She owns the distinction of having been the first Asian woman to pass the New York State bar exam without having studied law in the U.S. As a businesswoman, she was ranked number 1 among the “Top 50 Women Business Owners in America” by the Working Woman magazine in 1994.

In the United States, she is known as the remarkable woman behind the success of Reginald Lewis, the first Afro-American to hit the US$1B-in-assets mark. In January 1993, Reginald died of brain cancer. So revered was Loida’s love for her late husband and “tutor” that she later wrote a book, entitled “Why Should White Guys Have All the Fun? How Reginald F. Lewis Created a Billion Dollar Business Empire.” It sold several hundred thousand copies.

impressive source of power for Iloilo -- i hope to further expansion of the present plant and the opening of new plant in Concepcion.

Also, apart from coal and diesel in Ingore, there are also few power plants available in the power. That surely, will make Iloilo's power more stable than ever.

Just as the country bids goodbye to the summer season, Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim said during his first press briefing on Monday key infrastructure projects such as building international airports and developing new destinations will help fix the country’s bad tourism image.

Lim, who has been in the position for over a year now, admitted that the Philippines had “a lot of catching up to do" in order to be at par with other Southeast Asian countries.

The country is marred by the three Ds of negative branding — dirty, dangerous and disorderly, according to the Tourism Department. So far, the Philippines has only addressed the “dangerous" tag by deploying over 1,000 Philippine National Police officers to guard key tourism spots in Metro Manila, Boracay, Palawan, Cebu and Davao.

The Philippines ranks sixth among seven countries in terms of the number of foreign tourists in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Malaysia ranks first with 23 million foreign tourists in 2009 while the Philippines only had 3 million.

Under the new National Tourism Development Plan, the country aims to double foreign tourist arrivals to 6.3 million while domestic travel is expected to hit 32 million by 2016.

Improving market access and connectivity by establishing airports is one of the three key strategies, the tourism chief said.

The government is set to hold the bidding for public-private partnership (PPP) projects to establish international airports in Panglao in Bohol, Daraga in Albay, Puerto Princesa in Palawan, and Cagayan de Oro city.

“There has been a mismatch in the implementation of tourism management plans," he said, citing the international airport in Iloilo which until now does not have any international flights.

“We also need to address the safety concerns raised by the Civil Aviation Authority," he added.

Philippine tourism’s saving grace, he said, was domestic travel being boosted by the low fares of local airlines.

The department is also looking to develop competitive tourist destinations and products and improve tourism institutional governance and human resources. — BC/VS, GMA News

I totally agree with the article. ILOILO needs to step up (with the help of national government) to lure more tourists and investors to visit the place. With a modern airport, ILOILO should have direct flights from and to other Asian cities. This is indeed a big challenge for the city and province and how they will market ILOILO in the next few months -- as a tourist destination and an investment haven.

I hope The ESPLANADE will help improve the tourism magnet of the city plus of course our Heritage Tourism.

For the Province siguro, puwede gid ang mga white sand beaches, nature tripping and Religious-related Tourism activities ie church hopping, etc.

Again, we need to keep on promoting ILOILO !!!

Bloomberg, among others.

http://www.iloilotoday.com/dinagyang-festival-new-york-2011/#axzz1Ntlm0v8o

this is one of the best way for ILOILO to be promoted worldwide. In fact, this is a very advantageous move ang pag-perform sang Dinagyang sa New York -- we are not only introducing Dinagyang Festival to the world BUT the whole of ILOILO !! Dinagyang carries the name of ILOILO. People who are not aware sang place ta will be made aware, and maybe they'll be curious to visit it, and with better experiences, domino effect lang ni ang matabo -- they'll tell their friends, then their friend's friends, so on and so forth. We are indeed lucky to be well-represented in international program such as this in an Alpha City such as New York. Dako gid ni ang mabulig niya.

South Korean funding sought for P15-B Iloilo river project

ILOILO CITY -- The planned P15-billion Jalaur River Multipurpose Project II in Iloilo province may soon secure South Korean government assistance, Senator Franklin M. Drilon said in a public meeting here last Saturday.
Mr. Drilon said he presented the project to Joong-Kyung Choi, South Korea’s minister of knowledge economy and former ambassador to the Philippines, during a meeting in that country two weeks ago.

"I presented the project to him last week for possible funding by the Korean ExIm Bank (Export-Import Bank of Korea). The project has quite a big funding requirement," Mr. Drilon said in his speech during the 4th general membership assembly of the Iloilo Economic Development Foundation, Inc. last Saturday.

Mr. Drilon said a seven-man technical team from that country inspected the project site in Calinog, Iloilo last week.

Once the technical team submits its report, the Korean ExIm bank will bid out the contract on the work to revalidate the project’s feasibility study.

The revalidation report will pave the way for the signing of an agreement between the Agriculture departments of Korea and the Philippines on the implementation of the project, Mr. Drilon said.

The project will also be presented to President Benigno S. C. Aquino III this week.

"I hope to get his go signal before we can proceed further," Mr. Drilon said.

He added that he was hoping a memorandum of agreement on the project would be signed between the two countries when South Korean Lee Myung-bak visits the Philippines this November.

"I am confident that, if plans do not miscarry [sic], we can start the execution of the project by January 2013," he said.

The project aims to irrigate year-round an estimated 34,430 hectares of farmland in 24 towns.

It can also generate about 11.5 megawatts of hydroelectric power and provide potable bulk water supply of up to 100,000 cubic meters for household and industrial use in nearby towns, including Iloilo City. -- Francis Allan L. Angelo

Iloilo ready for sunrise industries

ILOILO CITY May 31 (PNA) – Iloilo is ready to host sunrise industries but need promotions in the national level to prop up the city and province as investment havens in this part of the country.

This was pointed out by former Tourism Secretary Narzalina Lim during the general assembly meeting of the Iloilo Economic Development Foundation (ILEDF) held in this city recently.

Lim, an Ilongga from Antique, is currently the president of ILEDF and a recognized champion of tourism promotions.

The former tourism official said that Iloilo can be an important site for of the multi-million-peso sunrise industries such as tourism and business process outsourcing (BPO). Iloilo has a pool of qualified human resources as the city is the educational center of Western Visayas hosting several universities and colleges.

Similarly, Iloilo and Guimaras Island if promoted well, can host several investments in eco-tourism as well as high end tourism needs comparable to other countries in Asia, Lim said.

ILEDF and other non-government organizations are strongly making efforts to make the city and province as a priority destination of BPOs. So far, Iloilo City is ranked as a next wave city by hosting seven BPO call centers here. (PNA)

Iloilo’s old rehabilitation jail to be converted into a regional museum

ILOILO CITY, May 31 (PNA) – The provincial government is eyeing the conversion of its old rehabilitation center into a regional museum.

This was disclosed recently by Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. before members of the Iloilo Economic Development (ILED) Foundation even as he urged their support in the endeavor recently.

The old rehab center is situated at the back of the regional office of the Department of Tourism (DOT) and adjacent to the new provincial capitol.

“We will retain its original façade but we want it to be a museum. We want it to be a regional museum that will house all the artifacts, treasures and works of art not only of the city and province of Iloilo but for those willing to participate from provinces like Aklan and Antique and hopefully of Negros Occidental,” he said.

Defensor also asked the support of former tourism Secretary Narzalina Lim, Ilonggo Senator Franklin Drilon and affluent Ilonggos who believe in art and history to extend support to the endeavor.

Meantime, Defensor announced that the restoration of the old provincial capitol to its original design which is expected to boost the tourism industry in this city, is set to commence next month.

“We want to restore it to its original. We want it to be a proud symbol of the glorious past of the province and city of Iloilo,” he said, as he urged the business and private sector support especially on logistical needs.

The old building was already declared as a historical site by the National Historical Institute (NHI). The structure was built during the Spanish era and was the official house of the provincial government since April 11, 1901.

To complement the restoration of the old provincial capitol, Defensor said that he is asking a master planner to prepare a master plan covering the entire capitol area from the Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) area towards the Arroyo Fountain.

“It turned out to be a beautiful place and will become part of the tourist attraction not of the province but of the city of Iloilo,” he said. (PNA)

Amu gid madam.

The lack of modern farming tools, mnechanized farming tools and methodologies makes our farmers and tillers rely on brawn, manual labor, or in other words, pure muscle. But because indi man ni kasarang mga farmers ta mag hire sang iban na workers, gapadamo na lang sila bata para as early as age 4 may mabulig sa field. Pro, kung may ara lang ni sila sang mga moderno nga gamit panguma, and mechanized farm implements pa, like massive harvesters, indi na ni kilanlan sang mga mangunguma naton na magpadamo bata ah. =)

the problem is not much on the need for mechanized equipment but the vicious cycle our farmers are exposed to.

1. the lack of capital - the tendency would be to barrow money to purchase seedling/fertilizer etc etc for the land. Ang ending most of the produce go to payment of the loan (sa iloilo amu ni gina tawag natun "alili") and the rest for the needs/daily subsistence of the family. Come next tanum hulam naman na sila liwat and it just goes on and on and on, la pa na factor diri what would happen kung pigado imu produce, ang tendency ma hulam ka naman and ma lunod kalang gid sa utang.

2. The lack of alternative modes of living in between harvests - ang mga farmers idle in between sang tanum season and and tendency is gasto lang nga gasto until the next time maka ani sila. Usually ma sobra lang gastu nila kaysa ila projected nga ani so ang tendency ma hulam na naman kuarta and they would fall to thesame vicious cycle.

The two are aside from the problems that commonly besets farmers, like lack of farm to market roads, environmental etc etc and those kaltehitze mentioned. Ang akun lang maski anu mo ka address ang common problems sang farmers without addressing the two i mentioned amu man gihapun gua nya...isang kahig isang tuka man gyapun atun mga farmers.

I find this funny, he is narrow minded focusing solely on the tourism aspect.
Do your job Lim! Bring the tourists!!You cover you ass's poor performance..remember the Logo?..
reason no.1 : Lim, an anti-GMA taking a jab of what the former admin's projects..yeah Lim, right..your are ignorant on your job!
reason no.2 : the new ILO airport was created because the old can't handle its current capacity at that time and the future projections so the need was an urgency. it's for the region not just for your tourists. It's for the people!
reason no.3 :facts? NEDA nod, foreign funded, backed by years of studies.
reason no.4 :tourism management plans? then it's your Agency's deficiency! hah!
reason no.5 :we are still on a blacklist remember?
reason no.6 :tourists are temporary travelers, the locals are the regular users of the facility.
