According sa ila nga 2009 definition of poverty a person needs PhP1,403.00/month to stay out of poverty. For a family of 5 naman ya, it needs PhP231.00/day to stay out of poverty. For me personally, daw kabudlay mabuhi sa amo na nga income rates.

imo i don't think it's possible to live with that amount for 1 person, heck 5 persons. this definitely needs re evaluation kay tama na gid ka obsolete sang definition nila sang poverty.

exactly that is why, i am always hoping that people here should at least have self restraint on what they post. or else all effort on marketing Iloilo here would be futile as it's crowded with too many nuisance answers to those bikerings of some immature individuals here. Some of you here keep on saying that you want to defend your City. What if you won't do it? Would Iloilo be put into oblivion or will these projects coming to Iloilo would be jeopardized? Unless it would be, i see no need for this endless bikerings that on the other hand, is jeopardizing the existence of this thread. Think about it guys, your so called defense would not change anything about Iloilo, would not stopped those projects from coming, would not stop the growth of Iloilo, etc but it would for sure be frowned upon by potential investors, policy makers, reading here. It's your choice. I know that you also know a lot here are lurking.

Football: Iloilo Captures PFF Men's National U-19 title

BACOLOD CITY, June 1 (PNA) -- The Iloilo Football Association beat National Capital Region Football Club-B (NCRFA-B) thus capturing the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Men's National Under-19, 2-1 held at San Carlos City, Negros Occidental here recently.

The Negros Oriental Football Association (NORFA) also defeated NCRFA-A, 3-0 to claim third place.

Eight teams bracketed into two participated in the tournament which started May 20 to 29, 2011.

The other teams are Bukidnon Football Association, Football Association of Rizal along with NCRFA-A and NORFA in Group 1.While Iloilo Football Association, NOCOFFA, NCRFA-B and Naga-Camarines Sur Football Club in Group 2.

Individual awards were also given to outstanding players. Julius Sumagaysay of Iloilo Football Association romped off with Best Goalkeeper award; his teammate Jenery Gabuan won the Best Defender award; Paolo Salenga of National Capital Region Football Association-B (NCR) as Best Striker; and native of San Carlos City and regular member of Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA) loaned to Iloilo, John Marcellana was voted Most Valuable Player.

superdelayed inang ncsb site. But I'm sure their data is very relevant though non-conclusive. May ara individual provinces performance man da? Mas maayo pa gid ina so we can see how we fare nationally and what'll be the focus of our local government to alleviate poverty in our province and city.

I have spoken to an Ilongga who went home with her family to Iloilo for a holiday and she said, they are really impressed with the development of Iloilo City right now. Plus, she said, she's happy cos our mayor has so many projects to improve our life in the city, notwithstanding the infra underconstructions right now.

Coincidentally, they call the project as "Diwata shore" while the said campus is said to have been inhabited by "tamawo" which is the Panayanon version of "diwata" or "enkantadas." The babaylanes even said that UPV Miagao is a progressive city of tamawos, perhaps in another dimension, and sometimes there is a breach between dimensions from time to time, hence the story of the golden ship at CAS, the train under the bridge and the reported people missing at the area which was already "transported" into another dimension.

You may laugh at me with this but ask any UPV Miagao alumnus here and that's what they heard about. An "urban" legend of the area. For believers of quantum physics, it may be possible. For believers of the occult, yeah. For skeptics, its an area worthy to relax at. Hehe! :D

Hundreds of millions needed
for sanitary landfill – City Hall

UNTIL the P200-million sanitary landfill for Iloilo City is realized, expect millions more in expenditures for the city’s dumpsite. And that is in compliance with environmental laws.

Such summed up the clarification of Engineer Raul Gallo, assistant General Services Office (GSO) chief, following over P12.2 million in additional budget for the GSO.

With some P94.5 million in working budget for 2011, the GSO will get P12.2 million more intended for ongoing works at the city’s dumpsite in Calajunan, Mandurriao.
Referred to as the “Calajunan Dumpsite,” P5 million of the P12.2. million will go for the loading and hauling of soil cover for the dumpsite’s “development.” Remaining P7.2 million has been allocated for rental of heavy equipment needed for excavation, spreading, composting and soil covering activities.

“Last year we spent about P10 million for the same works – rehabilitation and closure of the city’s open dumpsite,” Gallo said in an interview. “This year we only included in our regular budget about P7 million so we need the rest of the budget needed through supplemental budget.”

Yet the new allocation is not enough still, he clarified, saying the P5 million will only get the city about 16,000 cubic meter of soil.

“Over-all needed is 70,000 cubic meter of soil for soil cover...so far we are about 45,000 cubic meters already,” he added.

The “Calajunan Dumpsite” is 23-hectare wide and destination of city’s 200 tons of trash daily. The figure is 40 tons more from the previous years’ average of daily trash as recorded by the GSO pegged then at 160 tons everyday.

“The soil covering is for leveling of the open dumpsite. Ongoing too is our efforts for “controlled dumping” and we are introducing new system of dumping which is environment-friendly already,” Gallo continued.

As for the forthcoming P200-million sanitary landfill, Gallo said feasibility study and the detailed engineering plans have already been done.

Pressed for details on the budget source, Gallo said it could yet be another forthcoming loan as well.

Records obtained by TDG disclosed that P90 million in loan was secured with the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) in 2006.

With purpose stated for “construction of sanitary landfill,” the loan is for a 15-year period set to mature in 2021.

To date, balance of the P90 million is down to principal amount of P88,132,832.42.

“We are pursuing this in compliance with the environmental laws against open dumpsites,” Engineer Gallo ended.

it's ironic how some tend to attribute to other people the very qualities that are known to be possessed by them. the present and former mayors are never known for dictatorial tendencies. and by the way, who ever wrote this had his premise wrong. the past and present city dads are not self-proclaimed kings of the city. they were duly elected by the people to be democratic kings of their assigned kingdoms within a certain period.

at least, the mayor had the decency not to accept help from you through the barangay captains because, honestly, that help is laced with a strong brew of political intrigues. how is it that the likes of warren buffet could mobilize their billions without political spoils entering their minds.

the poor are always the target of this carrot and stick philanthropy. a compulsory acceptance of bread where the denial of that publicized and propagandistic charity is loaded with hurling stones. we all know that it is the poor who these slaves of fame and power would like to take advantage in a political alignment. what we are seeing here is a printed press in iloilo becoming a puppet or mouthpiece of the tantrums of an individual. a mickey mouse paper that is the inflated stamp of the tragic comedy being played by the dramatists preying on the opium-like temporary respite of the poor. vigilance is still the name of the game.

A true philanthropist always keeps his name confidential... I hate hearing Ynion's name again and again... Why does his name need to be publish in every newspaper for his every endeavour? This guy is more on popularity rather than the true cause of helping people... Abi nya mainto nya ang mga tawo sa sini nga bagay... If his real purpose is helping people, why doesn't he do it clandestinely... C1 - Circumferential Road 1 (and C1 is just a start may ara pa C2, C3, kag C4 :D)

Senator Franklin Drilon, chair of the Senate committee on finance, said the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is conducting technical evaluation of the 14-km. Circumferential Road 1 (C1) project which will cost P1.9 billion.

The C1 project would cut across the outer periphery of Iloilo City from Brgy. Buntalala in Jaro to Arevalo district, passing through portions of Pavia town.

Drilon said he met with Iloilo City Rep. Jerry P. Treñas and DPWH officials at Hotel del Rio Saturday to discuss the C1 project and the proposed widening of the national highway starting from the Montinola Bridge in Jaro, or better known to city residents as “Tabuk Suba” to Leganes town.

UP Diliman is almost 500 hectares in area while UP Los Banos is at around 1098 hectares (15,000 hectares if including the Mt. Makiling reserve). Ang total land area sang UPV Miag-ao is supposed to be no less than 1200 hectares as per executive order creating UPV Miagao campus. Composed sya sang 12 baranggays but I do not know the exact land area. Even so, it should be the biggest UP campus in the country in terms of area.

DOST installs 3 additional automatic weather stations in Western Visayas

ILOILO CITY, June 3 (PNA) -– The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) here has installed three other automatic weather stations (AWS) in Western Visayas in addition to its three existing AWS situated in strategic areas in the region.

The AWS serves as a meteorological station at which observations are made and transmitted automatically. It is capable of recording different weather parameters such as wind speed, wind direction, air pressure, air temperature, air humidity, rain amount, rain duration and rain intensity.

These equipment operate like a synoptic station except that they are unmanned. These are developed by the DOST which generate data automatically every 15 minutes.

They can provide data from sites that are difficult to access and inhospitable, and likewise supply data outside the normal working hours.

The latest to be installed are in Malay, Aklan; Guimbal, Iloilo and Brgy. Igang, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras. The already existing ones are in Brgy. Felisa, Bacolod City; Capitol Site in Kalibo, Aklan and Buntatala in Jaro district this city.

Moreover, the DOST is still planning to install two additional AWS in Negros Occidental; one in the southern portion while the other one will be stationed at the north portion of the province, according to DOST Science Research Assistant Ryan Vilmor Dumpit.

Dumpit said that this month, a site assessment will be conducted to determine whether the place that was identified by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Administration (PAGASA) is ideal for the project.

Within the year, the DOST is also planning to put up another five Automatic Rain Gauges (ARG) in Iloilo in additional to the five existing ARGs. The plan, according to Dumpit, is to establish an ARG in each of the region’s six provinces.

Drilon assures P2.1B fund for 2 key road projects in Iloilo






ILOILO CITY, June 3 (PNA) -– Ilonggo Senator Franklin Drilon disclosed on Friday the availability of P2.1 billion fund for the construction of two major road projects in Iloilo.

Drilon obtained the fund commitment after meeting Thursday with Secretaries Rogelio L. Singson and Florencio Abad of the Public Works and Highways and Budget and Management, respectively. Also present during the meeting was Iloilo City Rep. Jerry P. Trenas.

“It’s definitely a go for these projects,” Drilon said upon obtaining firm commitments from the two Cabinet members.

Drilon said the two projects will improve the city’s infrastructure and enhance its competitiveness as a tourism and investment destination.

By 2013, Drilon said Iloilo’s traffic woes will be eased tremendously with the construction of a 14-kilometer circumferential road to run along the city’s periphery and the widening of the Jaro-Leganes highway into a four-lane motorway.

Designated as the “C-1” project, the circumferential road will be a four-lane highway starting from the new flood control bridge in Barangay Buhang, passing through parts of Pavia town and ending on the national highway in Arevalo District, Drilon said.

Drilon added that Singson has given assurance the DPWH will allocate the P1.9 billion fund over a two-year period for the project.

To be implemented simultaneously with the C-1 project is the widening of the Montinola Bridge area into a four-lane road.

Drilon said he will put P200 million from his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) in the 2011 and 2012 annual national budget to finance the project. The balance of about P80 million will be provided by the DPWH.

“With the worsening traffic congestion in Iloilo City, we need to open new roads and widen existing ones,” he said. “These infrastructure projects will allow faster movement of people and goods to cope with the demands of a rapidly growing economy.”

Drilon has been vocal about pushing for Iloilo as the next economic growth center in the country.

“It’s time we get our just and equitable share from the national pie,” he said. (PNA)

Drilon assures P2.1B fund for 2 key road projects in Iloilo






ILOILO CITY, June 3 (PNA) -– Ilonggo Senator Franklin Drilon disclosed on Friday the availability of P2.1 billion fund for the construction of two major road projects in Iloilo.

Drilon obtained the fund commitment after meeting Thursday with Secretaries Rogelio L. Singson and Florencio Abad of the Public Works and Highways and Budget and Management, respectively. Also present during the meeting was Iloilo City Rep. Jerry P. Trenas.

“It’s definitely a go for these projects,” Drilon said upon obtaining firm commitments from the two Cabinet members.

Drilon said the two projects will improve the city’s infrastructure and enhance its competitiveness as a tourism and investment destination.

By 2013, Drilon said Iloilo’s traffic woes will be eased tremendously with the construction of a 14-kilometer circumferential road to run along the city’s periphery and the widening of the Jaro-Leganes highway into a four-lane motorway.

Designated as the “C-1” project, the circumferential road will be a four-lane highway starting from the new flood control bridge in Barangay Buhang, passing through parts of Pavia town and ending on the national highway in Arevalo District, Drilon said.

Drilon added that Singson has given assurance the DPWH will allocate the P1.9 billion fund over a two-year period for the project.

To be implemented simultaneously with the C-1 project is the widening of the Montinola Bridge area into a four-lane road.

Drilon said he will put P200 million from his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) in the 2011 and 2012 annual national budget to finance the project. The balance of about P80 million will be provided by the DPWH.

“With the worsening traffic congestion in Iloilo City, we need to open new roads and widen existing ones,” he said. “These infrastructure projects will allow faster movement of people and goods to cope with the demands of a rapidly growing economy.”

Drilon has been vocal about pushing for Iloilo as the next economic growth center in the country.

“It’s time we get our just and equitable share from the national pie,” he said. (PNA)

remember Pag ibig Fund? it is agressively used as a first option in buying house and lot packages..heavily endorsed by the real estate developers themselves.
there are also a good number of clients buying thru a bank loan. a decent number I may say.

although people have the power to buy upfront. nowadays, they are using loans to purchase..

Iloilo City's award-winning Dinagyang Festival will take the spotlight on Sunday before tens of thousands who will join the Philippine Independence Day Parade on Madison Avenue in Manhattan, New York.

Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog is optimistic that Dinagyang's US trip will strongly promote the city to the rest of the world and entice prospective investors during the series of performances and official functions.

The delegation is also invited to join an affair hosted by the Philippine Embassy in the US capital of Washington DC next Sunday, June 12.

The internationally-known Dinagyang has always been the city's major promotional vehicle.

The 30-man Dinagyang Festival contingent will be the main feature of Philippine Independence Day parade and cultural show, said Joji J. Jalandoni, president of New York-based Philippine Independence Day Council, Inc. (PIDCI), the event organizer.

PIDCI branded Dinagyang as the "Philippine tourism sensation and Queen of Festivals" as it showcases its wares in the star-studded celebration of 113th Philippine Independence Day.

The New York Police Department (NYPD)estimate 70,000 participants and onlookers at the Philippine Independence Day celebration there , PIDCI said in a statement.

Now on its 22nd year, the parade has enjoyed a proud reputation among Filipinos and their friends worldwide of being the largest celebration of Philippine Independence outside the country for the last 17 years, said Jalandoni.

It has become the largest outdoor gathering of Filipinos in Diaspora in the last five years, she added.

Vice President Jejomar C. Binay will be the Guest of Honor while Department of Tourism Western Visayas regional director Edwin G. Trompeta; Philippine Ambassador to U.S. Jose L. Cuisia, Jr.; Consul General Mario L. de Leon, Jr.; and Ambassador to U.N. Libran N. Cabactulan will be also present.

New Yorker US Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand, NY Representative Carolyn B. Maloney, NY Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, will grace the event.

PIDCI's Independence Day takes place first Sunday of June every year starting with a flag ceremony at 8:30am at the front of Philippine Center at 556 Fifth Avenue, between 45th and 46th Streets.

It is immediately followed by a thanksgiving mass at the Kalayaan Hall of the Center's second floor.

The New York Police will close the Madison Avenue’s 23rd Street to 42nd Street from vehicular traffic at 10am, and the the Street Fair opens on the Avenue's 24th to 26th Streets. It's an all-day virtual Filipino Food Festival and a Mini-Expo.

Brief opening ceremonies are held at Avenue's 38th Street at 11:45am and the parade kicks off 12nn and gets under way heading south downtown.

Marching contingents in brightly-colored costumes, uniforms, floats and open cars stop very briefly in front of a reviewing stand on the west side of 29 Streets before proceeding to the dispersal point at 27th Street.

The Cultural Festival opens on stage in the center of Madison Avenue north of 23rd Street at 2pm featuring Filipino and Filipino-American talents and performing artists until 6pm which marks the closing time of the whole day’s festivities.

This year, multi-awarded actor/singer Jericho Rosales with singer/TV and theater performer Karylle will entertain the audience at the parade and cultural show. Singing sensation Charice was the main performer in 2008 while pop superstars Sarah Geronimo and Christian Bautista were the main attractions last year.

The culminating Philippine Independence Ball will be held at the Hilton New York Hotel on Saturday from 7pm to 1am of the actual anniversary date of Independence Day June 12.

Another round of power shortage looms in WV

THE explosion of “suppressed demand” for electricity in the city and province of Iloilo and the rest of Western Visayas has placed the region’s power situation in a precarious situation.

This was learned from Henry V. Alcalde, vice president and deputy general manager of Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC), who disclosed that only 12 MW remains available out of the total 164-MW capacity of their coal-fired power plant.

PEDC, a subsidiary of Global Business Power Corp. of the Metrobank group, operates Panay’s first coal-fired power plant located at Brgy. Ingore in Iloilo City, LaPaz.
Alcalde said they noticed a sudden spike in Iloilo’s average annual growth in demand for electricity from 4% to 7%.

“We can attribute this demand growth to the explosion of suppressed demand brought about by the operation of the coal-fired power plant. With enough power supply in the market, these suppressed demands are surfacing and eating up our capacity,” Alcalde said.

Suppressed demand refers to potential consumers, mostly business investments that were put on hold due to short supply of electricity.

PEDC’s coal-fired power plant has a net output of 144MW, 65MW of which is supplied to Panay Electric Co., Iloilo City’s sole power distributor and 24MW to Negros Occidental. The remaining capacity is supplied to electric cooperatives in Antique, Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan and Guimaras.

Alcalde said only 12MW is available for distributors and this is seen to run out in the next two to three years.

“PECO’s peak demand nowadays is hitting 80-82MW because investments that were previously put on hold are now mushrooming. With the rapid growth in demand, our excess capacity will eventually be used up in the coming years,” he added.

Rex C. Drilon, Ilonggo business executive and vice president of the Iloilo Economic Development (ILEDF) Foundation, had voiced out this concern over the looming power shortage in the coming years.

Drilon said the fast-paced development of key cities in Western Visayas will take a toll on the region’s power supply-demand situation.

Drilon cited Megaworld Corp.’s initial development projects in the old Iloilo airport in Mandurriao district will require 15-20MW.

“In the next two to three years, we will be facing another round of power shortage and there is a need now to plan for the future to sustain our needs,” he added.

Drilon and the rest of the Iloilo business community endorsed the coal-fired power plant despite opposition from the Roman Catholic Church, environmentalists and left-leaning organizations.

Iloilo Business Club executive director Ma. Lea Victoria Lara said the proposed 100-MW coal-fired power plant of A. Brown Company Inc. in Concepcion, Iloilo is one of the viable solutions to the looming power shortage.

Lara said more power plants are needed to sustain Western Visayas’ thirst for power as it cannot rely on supplies from the geothermal fields of Leyte and other power plants in Cebu.

A. Brown Company Inc., through its newly-organized subsidiaries, acquired 100% ownership of the proposed coal-fired power plant previously owned by DMCI Concepcion Power Corp. under the DMCI Power Corp.

DMCI Concepcion had planned to build a circulating fluidized bed plant in Concepcion, Iloilo after receiving an environmental clearance certificate.

Alcalde said PEDC-GBPC is also planning to invest in power in Negros Occidental which is finding itself in Iloilo’s situation five years ago when rolling brownouts were the norm rather than exception.

Alcalde said while Negros has its indigenous geothermal sources, it is suffering from acute power shortage with the failed expansion of the Negros Geothermal Production Field operated by the Energy Development Corp.

“Negros is the biggest problem now because it gets the bulk of its electricity from Iloilo and Cebu,” he added. Negros Occidental has become a net importer of power.

Alcalde said they are studying many technologies in their Negros expansion with consideration to power costs.

“We are looking at coal, diesel, geothermal or other renewable sources. The expansion also depends on the costing of power because it would be useless if consumers will end up paying for expensive power,” he said.
