for Ilonggo partygoers (obviously I'm not .. haha). Ari naman ang bag-o sa Ciudad de Iloilo. Kung may pictures kamo sang PIER 16, post lang diri.

Pier 16 3rd Anniversary sizzles with weekend night party series

Ilonggo partygoers should watch out for a series of parties series this October as the hottest party place in the city, Pier 16, marks its 3rd Anniversary.

For owner Rose Montejo, Pier 16 has gone a long way since their formal opening on October 28, 2003.

Since then, Pier 16 has become the center of action for party-animals from all walks of life what with the nightly acoustic and show bands from Monday to Saturday.

For its 3rd anniversary celebration, Pier 16 has put up a series of weekend parties ranging from reggae, rock and comedy themes.

Reggae fanatics are in for a treat from Tropical Depression on October 13 for just P150 for every ticket.

Meanwhile, one of the most popular bands in the country, Itchyworms, will heat up Pier 16 on October 21 for a P150-ticket with free drinks.

Also, comedy fanatics will get their funny bones tickled by the antics of funny duo Jose and Wally who are known mainstays of the noontime show Eat Bulaga on October 28. Tickets for the Jose and Wally show are sold at P200 each while gift certificates will be given away to lucky members of the audience.

“The night-long parties are going to be more fun. We also have good food to suit the customers’ discriminating taste,” Montejo said.

Montejo said they are serving “lutong-bahay” dinner buffet every Friday and Saturday at an affordable rate of P99.

Pier 16 will also offer an array of coffee brews and some exciting new drinks.

For those who want a more quiet place to get jiggy, Pier 16 has set up the “Tambayan” or umbrella-type dining tables in the parking area.

Pier 16 takes pride in bringing to the city the hottest and favorite bands in the country.

“We can hold a big crowd during shows for the popular acts to perform in Iloilo. We don’t want to be left out by other major concert venues the reason why we bring in those crowd favorites here,” Montejo asserted.

So far, Pier 16 takes pride of the jampacked Bamboo concert last July 21.

Pier 16 also brought in Brownman Revival, True Faith, Sugarfree, Stagecrew, Retrospect and Coffee-break Island, among other sought-after bands in the music scenes.

While the Holiday season is coming, Montejo said they will start receiving bookings for Christmas parties for a maximum of 700-sitting capacity.

The good news is that Pier 16’s packages for set meal or buffet will be available and be adjusted depending on the budget of customers.

Not fond sang IC before. Sang una ang daw bottle bala sang MK, FM sang Bombo, ang 99.5) then ang Love Radio. Pero kung sa hit lang sang advert pag-estoryahan, IC beats them all. Kita mo hasta subong ara man gihapon ang kanta nga ina.

Next time mo makapuli sa Iloilo, Whyte, ikaw naman kuha sang pictures. At least diri biskan sa litrato lang mabulong kahidlaw ta.

isa sa mga frustrations ko last time nga ipatilaw sa mga visitors ko was NANG PALANGS BUKO PIE in OTON.way better than the famouse colletes of laguna.

RADIO STATIONs
before the so called "most listened/number 1 station" battle MK na gid ako.
then came the proclamation of Z100 as the #1 then sunod sunod na.
before LOVE RADIO it was called/known by their 2 letter "suffix" thus MB MK RF NU etc etc

di ba RF for rogelio florete hehehe

subong damo damo na gid radio stations

but it is my guilty pleasure (when in iloilo) to tune in to 87.7 mhz
gma6 iloilo signals enters that range so i can listen to TV anytime anywhere (sa car, thru cellphone, etc etc)

Love Radio is formerly MB.

And of course, taste is relative so may ara choice ang kada isa. But it's funny how these things are in Iloilo. Kanya-kanya choice puwera lang kung gutom na gid. Kung ano na lang ang malapit, okay na.

Re: sa jeepneys etc, post away, Whyte. Stuck akon mind sa "Kimberly" pa sang una. Baskog magpadalagan. Daw personal service mo lang. Wala pa sila ga-pick up pasahero kung kaisa. haha.

BOY MEJO OFF TO GERMANY

ILOILO Provincial Administrator Boy Mejorada is leaving for Germany this weekend for a two-week conference and study tour in various places of that highly progressive European country.
Boy will definitely learn many things from this visit to that nation; it is hoped that these could be applied in Iloilo province.

another clip from Panay News Lapsus Calami.

Puros novelty!

Iloilo’s feverish preparations

Iloilo plunged into last-minute feverish preparations for the Western Visayas Tourism Assembly which formally opens Monday, Oct. 23, at the SM City Activity Center.

Tomorrow, Sunday, will be the ingress of participants from all over the region and the final fine-tuning of the travel exhibit booths at the SM City Mall.

On Monday, the opening of the travel exhibit will usher in the opening program. The Edwin Duero Dance Company will perform and the participants will be presented with gifts.

This will be followed by the Ang Bahandi sang Nakatunday Kabisayana (A walk through the region’s cultural heritage).

Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano will be the guest speaker in the opening ceremonies.

The program starts with the Doxology and the singing of the Pambansang Awit.

Western Visayas Regional Development chairwoman, Antique Gov. Sally Zaldivar-Perez, and Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas, who chairs the host committee, will welcome the delegates to the assembly.

Most of the local officials in the region are expected to be present since their respective provinces will showcase their tourism festivals.

They will be formally introduced to the participants in the assembly.

The festival showdown will also be choreographed by Edwin Duero.

This will also be lightened up by the presentation of the candidates to Miss WV Tourism. Each province or major city will have its own bet for the title.

Cocktails will then be served by the DOT VI. There will be several presentations by various groups from the different provinces.

Regional tourism director Edwin Trompeta will welcome the delegates.

The Tuesday program is the one that attracted by attention. For the first time, I learned that Ibahay will present the Ati-ati, the original version of the more famous Ati-atihan street dancing.

Aklan, I learned, will showcase not only the Ati-ati of Ibajay and the Kalibo Ati-atihan, but also the Nabas Bariw Festival.

Bariw, the Nabas festival, celebrates the town’s patron saint, St. Isidor the Worker.

Bariw is a plant whose fiber is woven by Nabas indigenous people into handbags, hats, mats and other products.

The plant is endemic in the Nabas countryside and is the backbone of a thriving cottage industry of the townsfolk.

The highlight of the festival is a street dancing participated in by the 20 Nabas barangays.

Nabas Mayor Romeo Dalisay is expected to attend the affair. And he will most probably brief the audience on the value of the Hurom-hurom tourist spot. As a matter of fact, one of its major features is a spring from the base of the mountain that serves as a boundary between Antique and Aklan and empties into the village where my family has a swimming pool that is forever fresh and cool.

There are many other bathing spots which visitors frequent, including the more ornate resort beside our small niche there.

But the one that has always won my admiration is the Ibajay Ati-ati. This has managed to retain its religious and cultural purity. It succeeded in preventing its commercialization despite the persistent attempts by big firms to join the Ati-ati.

Ibahay is the most populous town of Aklan province. It is near Boracay and also boasts of wide beaches, although not as white as those on the resort island.

What makes Ati-ati unique is that it has retained its aboriginal reputation as a truly religious and cultural practice over the years. The legend is that the image of the Sto. Niño (the Holy Child Jesus) at the parish convent was discovered by a fisherman in one of the town’s fishing villages. He brought it home but it disappeared later. Sometime afterwards, it was installed in the parish church but disappeared again. It was finally found again on the spot where it had originally been discovered.

Perhaps, no town in the country has as many professionals abroad as Ibajay. Yet every year, they come home just to fulfill their vow to pay tribute to Sto. Niño. It is usually to thank Sto. Niño for a favor granted or to ask Him to listen to their prayers.

The most touching is that every barangay has its own float. The decorations are the main products of the village. As I had previously mentioned, once I thought that one float was decorated with pink-colored flowers, but upon close examination, I discovered that they were shrimps and lobsters with barbecued fish on sticks.

And, yes, a bystander may ask the festival participants for food which are carried in packets in their canes or walking rods.

Well, I hope to be able to see you at the Western Visayas Tourism Assembly in Iloilo.

But it's nice to reminisce sang good 'ol days especially during high school. Man puro lang kakulitan ang nabal-an. Well, beforehand (or maybe hasta subong) Star FM man ko guihapon. Suki na ako sina. Good one then. I'm more into amenities sang isa ka hotel. Kung may ara iya casino, mas maayo pa guid tani. he he. As long maayo ang mga bars or kalan-an sa sulod and security is good, okay naman ina. Later na lang sila magpatindog tag-as nga building if the demand arises na. Just like sang Sarabia Manor. Flat and monotoned man ang design niya before nila ginpatindog ang building sa unahan niya. So, that's alright. Besides, ang ila convention hall, pila ayhan ma-accomodate sina? If bigger and better than Kalatiao Hall of Sarabia, mas ok guid.

^^Thanks Chy for the eloquent pictures of Villa Beach. Even at its the current state, your pictures doesn't fail to evoke the once pristine beach we all once knew.

It's such a waste that the beach was overran by squatters and wasn't mitigated by our local government. Sans the squatters, the boulevard is a nice location to develop more hotels and resorts just like in Miami or Roxas Boulevard. Sad to say but the level of E. coli is so high today that only a few would dare swim its waters. Also, the place is proliferated with "short time" beach resorts.

I think the new Centennial Resort Hotel and Convention Center has a lot of potentials. I think the people that are currently developing it can make it better than Punta Villa.

The former Marikudo property is really grand had it not been for the neglect of its former owners. I'm confident to say that this is not just a name changing thing that they are doing. I know they will be infusing millions to the redevelopment of this property. The quickest route to get here is through that street beside Petron and Wewin's (is it still existing there?) across the LTO office. There are quiet a few turns to take before you get to reach its gates. Right at the gates are two bridges over a creek.

One huge building dominates the other two. This is not a teeny tiny building but a massive two storey building with looks like a fortress. To the right is another building which houses the squash courts. At the left is another two storey building but smaller in scale. I think this is a former bar or cafe. It offers a good view of people teeing their golf balls. Further back is a free-style swimming pool and a short walk to the left are four or five tennis courts. Even with these former developments, there are still plenty of areas to be developed.

I heard that Marikudo used to have a golf course. A large portion of it, including the golf course, was sold and was later turned into subdivision. Since they lost their golf course, they built a driving range for golfers instead. This I have yet to verify.

This is the Marikudo I once knew.

Congrats to the new Centennial Resort Hotel and Convention Center!

Thanks for a more in-depth information, Oboi. I hope it'll be a good start of bigger and better hotels and convention centers relocation outside city proper area.

Puros novelty!

I don't think there's any radio station in town much more updated than what's in the past. With technology and everyone's hooking at the MTV nowadays, and with cable stations playing their own set of tracks, FM radios are the least of recent's consideration. So forget about topchart listing every weekend when you can just turn your telly and watch the most recent music from other countries. Way much better and works for me, I guess. Besides, internet's music industry is speeding up to be the "in" for the new century. Even concerts for an inspiring singers can be viewed via internet now. It's how they promote things here in UK lately. Just get into the site if you want to view band's playing live over the world wide web. And it's much cooler. It's just like watching live concert at home.

No cityhood for Pototan
While the Senate had approved on its second reading the proposed conversion of 24 towns into cities, Pototan may find it hard to become a city, according to Iloilo 3rd district Rep. Arthur Defensor.

The proposal seeks to exempt the said towns including Pototan from the minimum annual income requirement of P100-million to gain the cityhood status. Pototan’s yearly income posts about P80-million.

Defensor said he was campaigning for Pototan to become a city before an amendment passed February 2001 had raised the income requirement which was originally set at P20-million.

Passi which became the first component city of Iloilo was able to comply before the law was approved prior to the start of the campaign period of 2001 elections. Defensor said.

The Ilonggo solon even branded such rule as “half-baked....

WV’s Parade of Festivals

ILOILO City -- On October 27, the streets of downtown Iloilo City will be transformed into a sea of colors. In the Regional Parade of Festivals, 20 of the region’s more than 100 festivals will march along the streets in a vibrant and collective celebration that intertwines culture, history and religiosity.

As one of the eight major events of the Western Visayas Tourism Assembly, it highlights the biggest festivals from the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental in a half-day extravaganza that culminates at the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand.

Of the six provinces, Iloilo has the most number of performing festivals. It includes the famous Dinagyang and Paraw Regatta of Iloilo City, as well as Tinu-om of Cabatuan, Pandayan of Badiangan, Saad of Leganes, Lanot of Janiuay, Cry of Jelicuon of New Lucena, Kahilwayan of Sta. Barbara, Pakuyang sa Tangyan of Igbaras, Banaag of Anilao, and Pintados of Passi City.

Negros Occidental is presenting three of its major festivals. From the capital of Bacolod City is MassKara while Bago City has the El Cinco de Noviembre and Babaylan.

Aklan will showcase two festivals with the world-famous Ati-Atihan of Kalibo and Bariw of Nabas. Likewise, Antique also has two festivals with Binirayan and Pahinis of Laua-an.

The provinces of Capiz and Guimaras will showcase its Sinadya sa Halaran and Manggahan, respectively.

The parade kicks off 8.a.m at the promenade of the Iloilo Provincial Capitol. From there, it will pass along the streets of Iznart, J.M. Basa, Ortiz, Rizal, and De Leon. The junction in Iznart and Solis Sts. will be the first performing area and the culminating performance is at the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand.

Organizers have clarified that this is purely a showcase of festivals. It is not a competition, although special awards will be given.

Multi-million planned rehab of Tigbauan market stirs vendors, town execs

By Florence F. Hibionada

A multi-million planned rehabilitation of the public market in Tigbauan, Iloilo stirred anew local officials and the project's stakeholders, the town vendors and business community here.

With a huge billboard displayed prominently by the market's entrance, residents were presented with a three-storey building described by a top executive here as "the mayor's vision."

you're way too young for a facelift, Bernie whilst Calle Real is way too old and needs a real makeover. he he. Seriously speaking, unless they turn Calle Real into a cafe shops haven and signature branded accesories sanctuary, reviving its old glory is far from reality. It needs a pool of drawers to enliven the place. The only thing I can suggest is to make it like any high streets here in UK or streets like Piccadilly, Bond or Oxford Circus, where all branded shops lined the long stretch. It would be very ambitious but a good probability once the city government put its hand and mind into it. Problem is, will these brands entice the Ilonggo public? Who knows?

^^Thanks Chy for the eloquent pictures of Villa Beach. Even at its the current state, your pictures doesn't fail to evoke the once pristine beach we all once knew.

It's such a waste that the beach was overran by squatters and wasn't mitigated by our local government. Sans the squatters, the boulevard is a nice location to develop more hotels and resorts just like in Miami or Roxas Boulevard. Sad to say but the level of E. coli is so high today that only a few would dare swim its waters. Also, the place is proliferated with "short time" beach resorts.

I agree with you Oboi. We can turn Villa-Calumpang into a great boulevard sans squatters residing the area. It's a good plan indeed.

Wherever your travels take you in Iloilo, you will experience the unique charm of this historic province. A relatively short trip, and you are magically transported to a totally different environment, an extra ordinary destination of remarkable sights.

Standing at the crossroads of the Orient and the developed Western world, ILOILO lies in the Heart of the Philippines, stretching 4,663 square kilometers. This strip of land is cut by the Iloilo and Salog Rivers, looking like a nose, hence, the name "Irong-Irong," and later, Iloilo was given. Occupying the southern and northeastern portion of Panay Island, to the north of Iloilo lies the Province of Capiz and JIntotolo Channel, Guimaras Strait washes its southern shores, to the eastern side, the calm waters of Panay Gulf and Iloilo Strait, and the Province of Antique is our western neighbor.

Composed of 42 municipalities and a component city, Iloilo is readily accessible to the different regions of the country. Its unique location has made Iloilo the commercial, cultural and intellectual center of Western Visayas from the dawn of history. Strategically, it is considered as one of the main tourist’s entrance here in the region. Iloilo City, the vibrant provincial capital, is a booming financial center.

The provinces’ geographical structure and makeup has, in fact proven to be an advantage to the traveler, particularly the adventurous, daring and enterprising. The province is connected by a network of modern roads and bridges that traverse towns in the south with their old churches and Antillan houses; the cool, mountain haven of pine trees, flowers and wildlife sanctuaries in central Iloilo; and the stunning land and seascapes with strings of resorts in the north.

But, for many visitors to Iloilo, their enduring memory of their travel will always be the people. Considered as the birthplace of Malayan civilization in the Philippines, present-day Ilonggos are a complex lot, most come from Malay stock, with varying infusions of Chinese and Spanish ancestries. Ilonggos are gregarious, fun-loving people whose hospitality is legendary. Their amiable faces, always ready with a warm smile and a cheery welcome, embodies a beautiful culture with pleasing voices that echo a proud past. Ilonggos are proud of their legacy as people normally entertaining their guests with tales of their cultural affluence. Moreover, Iloilo is steep in historical significance. Its contribution to history is valuable. It is home to freedom fighters, outstanding legislators, legal geniuses, noted business pioneers and famed musicians. Ilonggo’s zest for life has made us a world-class professional human resource.

Wherever your travels take you in Iloilo, you will experience the unique charm of this historic province. A relatively short trip, and you are magically transported to a totally different environment, an extra ordinary destination of remarkable sights and attractions: a rendezvous of street dancing in January, retreat in April, beachcombing in May, from June to October, it is bustling education center, and the closest thing to white Christmas in December

There will definitely never be a dull moment here. Many who visit over and over again, and who have definitely fallen in love with the place, would attest to the charm, beauty, and magnetism of Iloilo.

MPPTS 1st anniversary

Medicus Philippine Paramedical and Technical School of Iloilo, Inc. (MPPTS) celebrated its 1st Foundation Anniversary with a bang. The two-day affair kicked off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by MPPTS bigwigs from Iloilo and Davao, followed by a mass and school blessing officiated by no less than Archbishop Angel Lagdameo. MPPTS 1st anniversaryOther activities included a motorcade participated by the different day and night batches as well as a grand open house. For the piece de resistance, no celebration is complete without a night of fun, food and dancing. School officials, teachers and students momentarily forgot exams, MPPTS 1st anniversary lectures and hospital duties and trooped to the ballroom of Iloilo Grand Hotel for MPPTS's anniversary-cum-acquaintance party. Truly it was an unforgettable night -- a fitting ending to MPPTS's two-day anniversary celebration and a perfect way to begin a new chapter of excellent education. To MPPTS -- more power and congratulations!

Convention center to rise in Iloilo
By Ramel dela Cruz

A NEW form of accommodation was launched last Oct. 10, 2006 at the Centennial Hotel, Iloilo City.

This is the "Centennial Resort Hotel and Convention Center", considered as the grandest and biggest convention center in Western Visayas.

"This will be an international world class convention center," Felix Tiu, chief operating officer, said.

The resort is being constructed in Alta Tierra Village, Jaro and is estimated to be finished by January 2007. However, it will open as early as December this year.

Tiu said this resort is being made for people who wanted to conduct seminars and conventioneers here; be provided with their wants and needs and to open doors for tourism in the province.

"We are not here to compete but to complete the convention facilities," Tiu said.

It was reported earlier that Iloilo City had a hard time attracting conventions because of the lack of accommodations, and such is being answered by the Centennial Resort Hotel and Convention Center.

It has six restaurants offering different cuisines. Those who like Asian, Italian, into seafood, coffee and pastries, barbecue and grill and small meals patterned after fast food chains, have something to choose from.

Miner del Mundo, chief chef, said that their food is being prepared as you would at home - homemade quality.

The resort/hotel has two beautiful gardens that are perfect for weddings, birthdays and proms.

They also have a covered gym, pools, fantasy playground for the kids and many more.

They won't be charging for entrance fee, so everyone who's interested to relax and have fun can go inside.(RDLC)

---------

This is the second Centennial Hotel in Iloilo City? I guess both of them have the same owner, Mr. Tiu. With a little bit descriptions above, looks like Mr. Tiu is cooking up with something, making Sarabia Manor Hotel and Covention Center a rundown of its market. Sarabia, considered to be the biggest convention center in the region at present will have a direct competition in Jaro by January. What a good way to stir hotel business in Iloilo! And did the the new convention center claim to be the biggest and grandest centre as well? We'll see in few months' time. :|

you're way too young for a facelift, Bernie whilst Calle Real is way too old and needs a real makeover. Who knows?

Knowing how Ilonggos wouldn't let go of their fortunes in their pockets, hehehe! :D

Calle Real really needs to be revitalized but preservation is far too expensive than destroy and build scheme. Cebu right now has plans to close Colon St but almost the majority of the jeepney routes in the city starts here, and so is Calle Real. That's just one of the obstacles. PECO and other establishments such as the street vendors are giving an eyesore.

We couldn't do it very drastically. We can do it gradually. But lest, Im getting frustrated with ICCHCC. Sorry to say, either it is for "image" thingy that this body is doing or its just not functioning as of this moment at all. They haven't started educating the public thoroughly on how these heritage treasures are so important in Ilonggo society. Basi ato sila, nag-session liwat kag nagbakal sang ice cream para magkaon.

We need concrete action and not just on words!

^^thats an ambitious proposal kirby, I've been to Picadilly,Oxford Circus and Bond Streets, they are fabulous places! With regards to CAlle Real: I think we should get rid of all the ugly wires and posts around that area, improve the sidewalks and rennovate all the old buildings , have a big budget, improve the street and traffic in the area, remove eyesores like ugly signboards, posters, placards, etc. that do not seem to jive with the area. Its needs alot of political will and determination and cooperation with the present owners and tenants of the area for sure. But it will really be a sight to behold if it would be renewed to its once former glory.:|

Tourism assembly to incorporate tourism, new marketing strategies
By Maricar M. Calubiran

Tourism Assembly logo

The weeklong Western Visayas Tourism Assembly which opens today, October 23, aims to incorporate tourism and marketing strategies in order to sell the festivals and tourism places in the entire region. The department is also looking into the full swing promotion of domestic tourism apart from the foreign tourism industry.

Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional Director Edwin Trompeta said they want to focus on the regional tourism and marketing which is also in response to the current trend on the tourism industry. The tourism department is also expected to present its tourism action plan initialized in 2005 during its tourism summit.

He said, the holding of the tourism assembly will address the regional issues and concerns confronting the tourism industry. There are several issues raised during the tourism summit in 2005 which could be addressed during the assembly, added Trompeta.

Trompeta said the assembly is purposely designed "to get everybody involved as one regional destination."

"It is not to compete with each other's festivals but to compliment with each other," he said.

Among the highlights in the weeklong activities is the Parade of Festivals scheduled on October 27, 2006. Seventeen festivals in the region including the various festival queens will parade in the city's major thoroughfares on that day.

The parade of festivals will showcase El Cinco de Noviembre of Bago City; Paraw Regatta Festival of Iloilo City; Sto. Nino Festival of Kalibo, Bariw Festival of Nabas, Aklan; Pahinis Festival of Laua-an, Antique; Sinadya sa Halaran of Capiz; Tinu-om Festival of Cabatuan; Pandayan Festival of Badiangan; Saad Festival of Leganes; Lanot Festival of Janiuay; Cry of Jelicuon Festival of New Lucena; Manggahan Festival of Guimaras; Kahilwayan Festival of Sta. Barbara; Masskara Festival of Bacolod City; Binirayan Festival of Antique; Babaylan Festival of Bago City; Pintados de Passi of Passi City; Banaag Festival of Anilao and Dinagyang Festival of Iloilo City.

Trompeta said the successful promotion of the domestic tourism is only a matter of arranging and packaging. The promotion of the domestic tourism is a lifeblood of the nation.

Trompeta cited the case of Japan where more than 4 million Japanese tourists visit the tourist destinations in Japan itself surpassing the number of foreign tourists.

However, the success of the domestic tourism depends on the support and cooperation of the local government units concerned. The executive and the legislative departments should be synchronized to attain the purpose in the promotion of domestic tourism, Trompeta said.

"Nothing will happen if the mayor and the council are at war with each other, said Trompeta.

Also part of the activities in the Western Visayas Tourism Assembly is the giving of awards to stakeholders who have made contributions in the development of local tourism industry to be held on October 25.

There will also be a Western Visayas Tourism Forum the whole day of October 25 where significant topics related to the tourism industry will be discussed by the invited speakers.

They has a booth in SM City ... I have their brochures now and the perspective ... I will post the details later :D

that and a lot more. I believed, too, that if we'll be able to entice good companies to open their speciality stores within the area, things will start to change. The approach will a reverse domino effect. Old and historical buildings' interiors will be renovated wonderfully, good shoppers will flood the center, then maybe the government of the city will take more interest in improving the area. Especially the area going to the Iloilo Central Market. Let's turn Plazoletagay into something like of NY's Time Square or London's Piccadilly Circus. Take all those horrible billboards and change them into a dazzling neon lights display at night time. Make the street as incandescent as ever. It would be a great start. But of course, like Incognito always says, it takes a good political will and collaborative effort from NGOs, businessmen and government agencies to make it a very successful project.

Again, it's way too ambitious but we have to aim for the best rather than settle for less. It's a challenge not only for the city government but for the entire Ilonggos in the region. And I don't believe that Ilonggos are way too tight-fisted when it comes to money matters. We just want quality that'll satisfy however much we pay for it. If its really good shops, I'm sure Ilonggos will be in no doubt take advantage of it. Just have a look and feel around the city's vibration. It's not only cheap shops that prosper. More than that is a good list of middle-class shops and high ends stores that make good money in Iloilo City at present.

WV promotes tourism straight from home

After two years of taking tourism promotions to Intramuros, Manila, Western Visayas yesterday launched its first weeklong tourism assembly in Iloilo City. At the staging of the Western Visayas Tourism Assembly (WVTA) until October 29, the region’s tourism sector now attracts tourists and visitors from the heart of culture itself.

Antique Governor Salvacion Perez, Regional Development Council (RDC-6) head, said bringing the promotions to Manila had been both costly and difficult as very few visitors take a glimpse of the region’s attractions.

“It’s about time the visitors see, enjoy and savor all the best the region’s tourism can offer,” Perez said.

Forum highlights tourism issues, priorities

The Department of Tourism 6 (DOT 6) is all set for the Regional Tourism Forum. As one of the eight events of the on-going Western Visayas Tourism Assembly, it will be held at the Kalantiao Hall of Barceló Sarabia Manor Hotel and Convention Center on October 25.

Designed for all stakeholders, it will identify and explore issues, resolve priorities, and establish linkages aimed at the development of regional tourism. The whole-day forum will tackle four main issues: destination management, heritage tourism, medical tourism, and tourism education.

If they will solve the energy crisis and "old political handling" in Iloilo, then why not?

I'm just concerned on what happened a few years ago when Soriano of San Miguel Corp withdrew its construction of San Miguel Brewery due to a former politician who wants to have an additional "tong" each beer case it releases.

Also, the infrastructures in Iloilo are being eyed by "vultures" that are a constant threat to the city. Remember, Iloilo lost its glory because of the "seige of Muelle"?

And finally, although IMO progress is slow, but hopefully the new breed of Ilonggos would seek to see her motherland rise from the graves of oblivion.

W. Visayas tourism fest opens

Assembly highlights 22 fiestas of region
By the PHILIPPINE NEWS AGENCY

ILOILO CITY — The Western Visayas’ version of Wow Philippines, the Western Visayas Tourism Assembly which gathered various festivals in the region, opened Monday at the lower ground floor of the SM Activity Center.

Antique Governor Salvacion Zaldivar-Perez, who chairs the Regional Development Council (RDC), one of the lead sponsors of the event, cited the region, which she said has a lot to contribute to tourism.

"The No. 1 tourist attraction is here. We, in Panay are very fortunate to have a crown jewel in tourism, which is Boracay," she said.

She said the idea for the assembly was born from her discussion with Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, who mentioned the need to refine the promotion of the festivals and destinations in the region in a way that the mere mention of a festival would already serve as a recall for the destination itself.

Meanwhile, City Councilor Jose Espinosa, who represented Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas, said the holding of this event is the region’s response to the challenge of President Arroyo for this region to become one of the frontliners in the promotion of Central Philippines as haven for tourists.

Western Visayas boasts of 22 festivals. In 2005, Espinosa said this region was able to attract 1.5 million visitors, which in turn contributed P28 billion to the country’s coffers.

"Let us give importance to our tourism industry. Let us help attract more tourists from Japan, Australia, Taiwan, Russia, China and Korea," he said.

The eight-day festival opened with a caravan along the major thoroughfares of Iloilo City.

A simultaneous opening of the tourism exhibit and fair, travel exchange/mart and a showcase of cultural shows highlighted the first day of the regional event.

The theme of this event is "Sustaining Domestic Tourism: Turning Ideas Into Action".

The opening ceremonies was attended by Tourism Undersecretary Oscar Palabyab, local officials from the various provinces and cities in the region and the regional heads of national government agencies in Western Visayas.

what is this "seige of Muelle"?

habagatcentral1
October 25th, 2006, 07:56 AM
;10227479']what is this "seige of Muelle"?

Forgive my poetic license and for being so overly-romantic with history, hehehe! Much appropriate pa siguro kung "Fall of Muelle". I was the one who made that phrase but very comparable to this scenario in the 50's:

According to Alfred McCoy's work "The Queen Dies Slowly", it refers to the period when Iloilo's River Wharf (back then Iloilo's port only refers to the river wharf known as Muelle Loney) was under the conflict of two labour unions (more likely stevedores or arrastres: the Consolidated Union of the Philippines (CLUP) and the Federacion Obreros de Filipinas (FOF)) in order to seize control of the port.

From its opening to international trade in 1855 onwards before World War II, Iloilo's wharf was really raking money, thus the famous slogan: "Ang Kwarta, ginapiko kag ginapala." ushered. Many people would want to control this lucrative infrastructure back then because the flow of money from sugar was immense. All sugar products from the vast planations in Negros Occidental are exported internationally through Iloilo City before World War II. remembrance of the British Vice-Consul who ushered in the era of sugar boom by introducing modern farming techniques and enocuraging sugar trade in Negros and Panay. Egro, he is known as "The Father of Philippine Sugar Industry"

After the Japanese Occupation, Iloilo's prominence in the Visayas and Mindanao was already waning because of the opening of a direct access of sugar factories to ports in Negros Occidental in Pulupandan and Bacolod. Also, since the sugar economy was already declining after World War II, many workers complained about their minimal wages, lay-offs and mismanagement.

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h291/berniemacksouthcentral/253376606_28fd4e2a3b.jpg**

The conflict between the two labor unions reached to the point where the Caltex Depot was bombed by mid-50's. Iloilo port's infamy reached the shores of Manila and Cebu and it discouraged the entrepreneurs and invstors to open up business in Iloilo. Passengers who are coming from different parts of the country feared of the port since not only these arrastres are rumored to do extortion to shipping companies and businessmen, but also pickpockets. The merchants fled the dying city. Thus, the "Death of the Queen" was inevitable.

That is how important an infrastructure is to a city. What brought life to the city also brought death upon it.

The wharf has witnessed the the abandonment of her sons and daughters for better opportunities outside Iloilo back then. This was one of the reason of Iloilo's demise. A victim of monocrop agricultural industry and as what Ambeth Ocampo said "Prosperity without progress".

A bitter medicine that is hard to swallow and a lesson learned the hard way. But nevertheless, hope was never lost in every Ilonggo spirit. And now, they are moving forward, despite the recent adversities that hit the Ilonggo heartland.

Hala Bira Iloilo! Sulong sa pagbag-o!

WV has key role in mega-regions project
By Maricar M. Calubiran

The Western Visayas region has a very significant role in the Arroyo administration's mega-regions project as far as tourism promotion is concerned.

This was given emphasis by Regional Development Council (RDC) chair Governor Sally Perez of Antique during the opening of the Western Visayas Tourism Assembly last Monday.

Perez said the region has many resources which could be used in the tourism promotion. This includes the white-sand beach of Boracay Island. She said Boracay is considered the first of the three jewels in central Philippines. The other two are Cebu and Bohol. "We are very fortunate that we have the crown jewel," Perez noted.

In her opening speech, Perez also expressed that the holding of the assembly will enable the people in the region to see, enjoy and savor the best that the region can offer. "We should concentrate on the promotion of provincial tourism," she said.

The holding of the tourism assembly here is meant to incorporate tourism and new marketing strategies in order to promote the tourism industry of Western Visayas. The tourism assembly is sponsored by the Department of Tourism Region 6 and the Iloilo City government.

Perez thanked the cooperation of the various local government units in the region with regard to the holding of the weeklong affair. She ushered the officials concerned to make the event highly successful.

Part of the event is the exhibit of products native to every province of Western Visayas. Venue of the exhibit is SM City Iloilo. Each day, every province will also present a cultural showcase.

Meanwhile, Tourism Secretary Ace Durano is the keynote speaker in today's (Wednesday) Westrn Visayas Tourism Forum. In the forum several topics will be discussed. Among the topics in the forum are: "Destination management: Making tourists look forward for another visit"; "Heritage tourism: Looking back to the future"; "Wellness tourism: Shaping a healthy tourism industry; and Relevant tourism education: Molding globally competitive tourism professionals."

In the forum, it is also expected that the department will give an update on the implementation of Western Visayas Tourism Action Plan for 2010.

In tourism promotion destinations and festivals should go together, says DOT exec

By Maricar M. Calubiran

Department of Tourism (DOT) Undersecretary for Tourist Services & Regional Offices Oscar Palabyab encouraged officials in the region to develop a scheme where places could be promoted along with festivals in order to become competitive as far as tourism promotion is concerned.

Palabyab said there is a projected 120 million traffic of tourists in the Asia Pacific region in the coming year and the region should have its share of the tourist arrivals.

He said the country is targeting to attract foreign tourists more particularly from Japan, Australia, China, Korea, Russia and Taiwan.

Looking through Iloilo's glorious heritage
By Roilo Vincent G. Laguna

HOW magnificent it is to live in a house full of beautiful memories shared by our forefathers passed through our own generation. A house where we can see wide living room, wherein joyful celebrations are being held. While there are convenient rooms where true love were shared and siblings were raised. Further a place where intricately designed furniture and kitchenware were used.

These are the heritage houses of respected families way back the Spanish regime. These are the living witnesses of the struggles and triumphs of Iloilo City. In the celebration of Iloilo's Cultural Heritage Month, Sun.Star Iloilo Weekend joins the proud Ilonggos in taking pride of the city's glorious heritage.

In 1990s Iloilo was known as the "Queen City of the South" until the Second World War. Way back to these times, the city enjoyed the prestige and honor of being a home to some of the respected and well-to-do families of the country. Big and beautiful mansions were built as symbol of their status in the locality.

Time may run so fast and civilization may conquer the human race, still these illustrious architectures remained its strength to stand still amidst the turbulence of time.

We invite you to travel with us as we enter the doors of history through some of the heritage houses in the city. Experience the breath of the glorious past and witness the evolution of time as pictured in the four corners of these houses.

The Macavinta House

More than the delicious foods served in this house, one could ever love and enjoy the ambiance it could give to every costumer.

This European Castle along Gen. Hughes St., Iloilo City, invites every passerby's eyes to glance and take a peep amidst its busy location.

Before this house turned into a popular restaurant, it dwelled into many stories and to begin:

After World War II, in 1945, the Ferraris Family bought the lot and built the 'Villa' style on it. Then, the house has undergone several renovations when the family sold the house to a certain Mrs. Mirasol and commissioned architect Luis Dichupa to help her. While in 1977, Esperanza Mirasol and husband Pedro Macavinta acquired the rights from the other Mirasol siblings, and with sons Howard and Glenn, they made the house as their residence. The second floor was then leased and housed the offices of the Bureau of Forestry and Office of Civil Defense.

In 1994, the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics leased the first floor of the house. The house remained vacant in the year 1995-2002 but it was maintained by the family to keep it in good condition.

Came 2003 when entrepreneur Louise Jardeleza-Cardova and son Miguel leased the house. Today, the Macavinta House is popularly known as Afrique's Restaurant.

Time may pass and change, but the Macavinta House remained steadfast in showing to the people its beautiful designed and serve the people to the best it can show.

Josefa Segovia Student Center

Iloilo truly has proved its worth as a premiere place for education; thus one house conspired in this title.
Surely you can spot this house along General Luna St., Iloilo City. Though it has an old façade but the house remained its dignity as it was maintained clean.

We can trace the history of this house way back in 1920s when the Arroyo family built it and served as their family residence. For years, the Arroyo Family used it.

In 1950s, the Archdiocese of Jaro under Monsignor Cuenco leased it. While in 1955, the Institucion Teresiana, a Catholic lay women's association came to spread the gospel and promote human development through education and culture.

Here the educational system came to conquer the house when the group moved into the Arroyo residence in 1956. The group converted it into a university residence and student center. This was the beginning when youthful aura reverberates the whole house with their laughter, stories and excitements. It accommodates up to 40 female students.

And yes, years passed by and the wooden walls have grown weak. Since the association has also grown, they needed more space for 70 ladies. Thus, in 2000, Architect Maripaz Villanueva, a member of the Teresian Assiciation redesigned the residence into a student center for 70 ladies and a residence for up to 14 association members at the site of the original structure.

The rest is history. Education at its best was practiced in this house.

Today, the house still exists to beat the new world packed with its experiences years ago.

Jalandoni's Old House

Another precious gem we could add to the glorious crown of Iloilo is a majestic house with superb beauty and design- the Jalandoni's Old House.

Located at the flip side of Jaro Plaza, Rizal street, the house was a private residence building of the late Doña Agatona Argulles Jalandoni and presently owned by Mr. Carlos Jalandoni.

It was built on January 10, 1927 with a certain Cacho as engineer/ contactor. However, the house was so big for the family; thus, Doña Agatona allowed the first floor to be rented by a Chinese businessman and the latter used it for commercial purposes.

The house has also played a vital role in history since it was used as a Japanese headquarter in 1945. As an effect of war, the house was partially damaged as it was hit by a bomb on February 22, 1945.

The taste of Eclectic Renaissance was applied in the reinforced concrete house. Such designs were emphasized in their pilasters, arches of the arcade, balustrade corbel balconies, multi-colored window gazing and ornate parapet of the three- sided façade.

On how magnificent is the external structure, the interior design also expresses its majestic appeal. Classical European style was exemplified in the house. To note, there are high parallel ceilings, spatial arrangements for natural lights, cross clestilates and grouping of living quarters on the second floor. Filipino antique designs were greatly emphasized.

Inside the house are altars for holy figures, large family portraits, paintings, decorative artifacts and large spaces for cooking, eating, and sleeping which proves the values for closed family ties.

Today, the house still stands with honor and excellence. One could ever appreciate the formation of this house amidst the thorough history Jalandoni's Old House has passed.

Avanceña House

This is now known as Camiña Balay nga Bato.

The Avanceña House stands along Osmena St., Arevalo, Iloilo City. It was built around 1860s and was originally owned by Don Fernando Avanceña, uncle of former Chief Justice Ramon Avanceña.

The house is not just a simple heritage house with its majestic features but it played a vital role during wartime. It served as a general headquarters of the Filipino revolutionaries against the Spanish government and American government.

Simple but elegance- this is the main feature of the balay nga bato. Through time, its original color has faded, the capiz windows have softened but the strong atmosphere of braveness of the house remained.

Presently, the Avanceña House serves a dual purpose as it houses the Mother Theresa Learning Center on the ground floor and the serves as residence of the Camiña family.

These are some of the many heritage houses in Iloilo. We can feel how blessed we are in terms of history and important structures in the country. This, we pay tribute to the lessons and experiences it shared in the development of Iloilo.

Time may run so fast but it cannot tarnish the memories shared by our forefathers; though the physical built up are now slightly damage, the history is priceless.

At the same time, we salute the efforts of Councilor Merci Garcia, chair of the Committee on Tourism, Culture, and Historical Affairs for working hard in preserving these century-old houses.

The efforts shown by the Iloilo City Heritage Conservation Council is worth an appreciation in saving and preserving the glorious history of our town.

As we look back through Iloilo's glorious heritage, may it will serve as an inspiration to us all in our continuous search for fulfillment now and in the coming years. We expect nothing but the best.

Anyways, just been with pacific, iamme, and ferrersky again to discuss some ssc agendas, mostly about the T-shirt. We've already produced the semi-final design, pacific is just going to put the final work in paper and we'll be posting it here for final approval :D so you guys can tell us if you would want to order.

We're also thinking of doing this "mini-project", but it's just on the planning stage so we can't post about it yet, hehe.

Also, after gathering some brochures sa Travel Exchange and sa LGU Booths, IAMME saw a picture that was familiar in the brochure of AMIGO Terrace Hotel. It seems they took my picture (I'm already 99% sure that it's mine) without my permission. So I need to go to their mall office to clear things up, hehe. Actually, I'm more flattered than anything ... I told them that I'd appreciate it if they'd put credits on the photo and that I have a lot more photos of Iloilo if they're interested :D

@Alingtong. 8 floors so far ang pinakamataas sa Iloilo. Dahil sa clay ang foundation kaya nalimitahan ang pagtaas ng buildings. The nearest hill in Iloilo is 15 kilometers away. Iloilo has a lot of land to expand with but mind you, the size of the city itself is as small as 56 square kilomemters but already has a population of 365,820 as of 2000 NSO. It is a highly-compact city.

Iloilo City is indeed compact, especially the city proper area. However, Robinsons, SM Delgado, and Gaisano City aren't as close as they look in the pano. It's because of the zoom that they look that close to each other. Robinsons-SM delgado-Gaisano City is actually about 1.5km accdg. to Google Earth. Still walkable.:)

Waway, if you want to mallshops in Iloilo, better start with Gaisano City Mall in LaPaz District - passing Forbes Bridge (Metro Iloilo Water District-Iloilo Hall of Justice- The Iloilo River Queen Hotel - The Castle Hotel - Museo Iloilo - Department of Tourism Regional - Iloilo Provincial Capitol - Doane Baptist Seminary) - The Atrium Mall, then SM Delgado, then MaryMart Mall and lastly Robinson's Place Iloilo. If by walking (without dropping in every mall) you can spend at least 30-min to an hour walk, which I believe is not bad at all especially in a fair day.

You can even have a quick look at Payless Plaza at the back of SM Dlegado, or The Amigo Mall (barely 5-minute walk from SM Delgado) or proceed to the old Gaisano Department Store after Robinson's Iloilo. I'm sure you'll enjoy strolling in Iloilo City's Downtown Area. It's where shopping really takes place (lest Diversion Road and Jaro District).

Durano: WV vital to super regions program

THE national government is eyeing to make Western Visayas “a pillar of tourism” by pouring P49 billion worth of infrastructure projects under the central Philippines “super regions program.”

Speaking at the Western Visayas Tourism assembly forum yesterday, Tourism Secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano said Region 6 is vital in making central Philippines the tourism cluster of the country.

The forum was held at the Kalantiao Hall of Sarabia Manor Hotel and Convention Center.

Known for their rich natural, cultural and historical sites, the Central Philippines is composed of 27 provinces from Regions 4 to 7 and the Caraga.

The super regions program of the Arroyo administration aims to develop growth in the countryside by developing specific industries in four regional groupings.

Under the mega-grouping, North Luzon will be the agri-business quadrangle, Metro Luzon will be the urban beltway, Central Philippines will focus on tourism, and

Mindanao will focus on agri-business and serve as the cyber-corridor.

Durano said the key to making Western Visayas the pillar of the tourism sector is “to open regional and secondary gateways to the six provinces of the region.”

Among the major projects cited is the expansion of the Kalibo airport and the construction of two airports of international standards in Iloilo and Negros Occidental, a modern seaport in Guimaras, the Iloilo City flood control project and highways connecting provinces and towns to air and seaports.

Durano said the completion of the Iloilo and Silay airports are “very much anticipated” by the national government.

“Once these airports are operational, we can now package and market Western Visayas to international tourism agencies. The two airports will also mean more direct international flights to Panay, home to the world-famous Boracay Island, and Negros Occidental,” Durano said.

The national government is also addressing the electrical power demand of Western Visayas to sustain the tourism industry. The tourism chief said the 40-megawatt geothermal power plant in Bago City, Negros Occidental and the upgrading of transmission lines in Panay are key energy projects in support of the “tourism cluster vision.”

Durano assured political and tourism industry leaders in Western Visayas that the funds for the multibillion projects are already in place.

“The vision of making central Philippines as the tourism cluster of the country is a materializing and evolving reality. With the natural, cultural and historical attributes of the region complemented with infrastructures, I am confident that Western Visayas will become a pillar of the country’s tourism industry,” Durano said.

Updates from Iloilo courtesy of Sir Ben:

Bernie,

You're right, WVTA is about to have a grand parade of 19 festivals tomorrow at 8 A.M. Yesterday we had our Tourism Congress and Awards at the Sarabia Manor Hotel, which was attended by about 300 pax, and the Fiesta Trak project of ArtistShop was inaugurated. Friday evening we are choosing our Ms WV Tourism.

For 2007, Dinagyang plans to have international involvement through the UN Campaign. We are promoting the Millennium Development Goals. Dagoy will tour the Philippine Cities, fluvial procession will be more grand, and we are venturing into a fund raising project - the International Ice Show.

See you January with lot of your friends.

Try going here in Dinagyang Gravy. Palalakarin ka simula San Agustin hanggang downtown area. The whole downtown area is closed to vehicular traffic for 2 days (saturday ug sunday). during January ok lang naman na magbabad sa init kasi malamig ang hangin.

Iloilo is pretty compact. Kami nga eh, from our school nga nilalakad namin papuntang SM City. Malapit naman ang distansya.

Another confab in Iloilo City. The list is getting longer everyday sa mga conventions, seminars, general assembly, workshops nga gina-held sa aton ciudad. P29B upgrades W. Visayas infrastructures: Tourism exec

THE National Government is investing P29 Billion in Western Visayas to upgrade its various infrastructure projects to bolster the region’s tourism industry, Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said Wednesday at the Western Visayas Tourism Assembly at the Sarabia Manor Hotel.

........

The tourism secretary said that Central Philippines is host to 51 weekly international flights. These include 5 flights to Japan; 16 to South Korea; 2- Taiwan; 14- Hong Kong; 12- Singapore and two flights to Malaysia.

“Seven out of ten most visited beaches in the country are located in Central Philippines, and the top visited beach is here in Western Visayas,” Durano said.

He further said that the once the construction of the new Iloilo Airport is completed in year 2007, the DOT “is really looking forward to this, because with this new airport we can already package and aggressively promote this part of the country to our foreign tour operators”.

“Western Visayas is a tourism cluster by itself, it can now really be pushed internationally, and I can say with confidence that this region of the Central Philippines as the country’s tourism cluster is boosted by its natural, cultural attributes complemented with good infrastructures,” the tourism secretary concluded. (T.Villavert/PIA)

Updates from Iloilo courtesy of Sir Ben:

thanks for the posting the update Bernie, straight from the horse's mouth. he he. Don't take it literally (for Ben Jimena). Basi maakigan ta sini bala.

Ano nga International Ice Show ang himuon nila? Are they putting an Ice Skating Rink sa aton? Abi hambal si Sir Ben nga klarohon niya ini? Si Dagoy i-pa Ice Skating nila. Go, go, go Dagoy!

Dagoy is going international na. It has been learned that Dinagyang Festival will be the first festival to carry the United Nation's (UN) Millenium Development Goals. Making it more internationally-acclaimed as ever. Any idea kung diin nga mga places si Dagoy mabisita sa Pinas? Tani aga pa ang kalibutan palibuton na nila si Dagoy to start the drumbeating.

Hala Bira Dagoy! Hala Bira Dinagyang !

In fact, we're cool with walking here in Europe, Space. Sang una lakat man kita ah. And I still loved to walk and stroll, and enjoy the soothing coolness of the wind. Nalipat ka i-include ang CitySquare-Marketplace. he he. Joke lang migs.

Kirby, Wecky, etc etc... Centralian man ako. Tupaday man lang building ta anay. CE 91. I doubt that we know each other though coz when I was in 5th year, both of you were probably on 1st year or still in high school. I remeber during our time, we still have minor subjects in our 3rd or 4th year curriculum such as "Pilipino" while its on the 1st year curriculum of the Nursing course naman. That's why our Pilipino class back then is a combination of students from different courses, dominated by engineering & nursing studes. Daw ka sadya lang anay kay man enhinyero kag nar-es nga daan kung mag-updanay sa klase, labugay gid.

I'm glad to read all these developments in Iloilo. Does someone out there has a picture of Jollibee in Passi City? I was told that its a big 2-storey branch, even bigger that most branches in Iloilo City.

Korek ka dyan Kirbs. During my high school years, CitySquare-Marketplace was the bargain-hunter's paradise when it comes to shirts. Before that there was Walkshoppers across the street competing with Gaisano sa pabaratuhanay.

I also remember there was a Hotel Centercon (?) whose entrance is along a pedestrian "pasilyo" connecting JM Basa & Iznart Streets (short-cut). Beside the hotel along JM Basa is a Chinese restaurant where I frequently ordered for merienda the maki soup. Baw sa kanamit gid. It's a hidden treasure that tastes like no other. Tapos sa ingod ya may second-run theatre nga nagapagwa sang mga bold films nga ginasal-utan sang triple x scenes. Eyewitness account gid ko ya nga daan, proven without reasonable doubt hehehe. What happened to this area?

Updates from Iloilo courtesy of Sir Ben:

they're joking, aren't they? Pila kuno ila subong budget nga year? Pamangkot pa gid tani, how long will they staged the International Ice Show? Basi ang gina-mean diri nga Ice Show is Ice Carving. Daw Edward Scissorhand ang style galing Ice lang. Galing diin naman ayhan nila i-display. Pero biskan ano man ina, okay gid and highly recommended, I guess considering nga support ina to the UN Millenium Development Goals. So I guess, it's for the good cause.

Bern, wala pa nila ma-post ang list of activities for Dinagyang 2007 no? Gusto ko mabalan-an tani nga apart from Kasadyahan and Dinagyang Ati-Ati Proper Contest, ano pa gid ang mga activities nga gin-line up sang Iloilo City prior the festival proper? And ano ang role sang ciudad in promoting the UNMDGs. Since they want a festival with social relevance, then it's just right lang siguro mabal-an naton to where Dinagyang 2007 is heading. Pero of course, malayo pa man. But IDFI I'm sure is busy finalizing the programme and committee already.

re: CALLE REAL rehab

yup i agree that first and foremost it should be closed to traffic (just like avenida rizal in sta cruz manila)
mostly ang jm basa lang from socorro to lets say plaza libertad or freedom grandstand

then let iznart street (central market area) take most of the rerouting though it'll be a nightmare since traffic volume will almost double
also make use of the iloilo river street as an alternate route

then comes the restoration of the building, street and its sidewalk.
also include those wires :D and that center island/railings have to go

will businesses be affected?
not really (hopefully not) since it the project once in full swing and finished can be an added attraction itself drawing not only the locals but also tourists.

a great mixture of the old and the new would enliven the street

now, how about the streets intersecting JM basa?
they could still be used only by private vehicles
OR they can be "makeshuft" parking spaces

tama ka migo. Lakat man gid tanan. Paano kay mostly high streets naman ang tira nila diri sa Europe. You don't need to drive kung puwede man. Mas maayo kay wala gasto sa pamasahe.

Ara pa ang Marketplace and Citysquare? Daw wala na mabati-an abi eh. Sa area dira daw wala na gid ko ka kadto. Kung makapuli ako sa aton, wala naman ako galabay sa downtown area eh. Dira lang ko pirmi sa Diversion, then Villa and anywhere outside the city proper perimeter. Sa pagkagutok gid sa downtown. Okay lang dira kung may transaction ka nga himuon. Kung wala, sa SM City na lang. Ara man ang tanan.

PARADE OF FESTIVALS
Reg’l Tourism Assembly
shrugs off security threats
By DAVID ISRAEL SINAY

ILOILO City – In a vibrant and collective celebration that intertwines culture, history and religiosity, 19 of Western Visayas’ more than 100 festivals will march along the streets of downtown Iloilo City today.

The Regional Parade of Festivals of the 1st Western Visayas Tourism Assembly will transform this city into a sea of colors – one of the eight major events of the assembly. It will highlight the biggest festivals from the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental in a half-day extravaganza that culminates at the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand.

The parade will start at the Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional Office on Bonifacio Drive, going to the first staging area at corner Iznart-Solis Streets going to the Freedom Grandstand.

Tonight, the Miss Western Visayas Tourism beauty pageant will be held at the West Visayas State University Cultural Center on Luna Street, La Paz. The pageant starts at 8 p.m.

Of the six provinces, Iloilo has the most number of performing festivals today.

Meanwhile, 11 even candidates from various festivals of the region – Dinagyang (Iloilo City), Ati-Atihan (Aklan), Binirayan (Antique), Sinadya sa Halaran (Capiz), Manggahan (Guimaras), Panaad (Negros Occidental), Paraw Regatta (Iloilo City), Binanog (Lambunao), Pintados de Passi (Passi City), Carabao-Carroza (Pavia), and Masskara (Bacolod City) – shall vie for the title of Miss Western Visayas Tourism 2006.

SM SHOEMART! Mapabugnaw didto kaw airconditioned... Hehehe.... :)

^^ Again, restoration is much expensive than "demolish and rebuild" thingy.

Kinahanglan na guid sang konkreto nga aksyon.

Cebu is also having the same dilemma as Iloilo right now. They're trying to close Colon but again...same as what Iloilo is experiencing (the project on the other half was set aside by the current mayor of Cebu since it is not his "priority"; ICCHCC and the LGU on the other hand, lacks actions but is part of the program).

Akon sa Commoner man ako gabakal sang school supplies. Then my lola used to do her grocery in the New Island Bazaar kay gabaton sila cheque so dira na lang ginasinsilyuhan.

Aside Commoner, ara man ang Seven-Seven. School supplies and toys namon nga mga mag-tuod wer obtained from them. Loved to visit them every weekend to shop kay bag-o pirmi akon gamit. I was a bit of lola's boy in the past so basta shopping gani upod gid ko dayon. Then dira pa kami ga-market sa may Central. May bitbit pa ko na kung kaisa nga plastic bag. Inang di colour sang una nga plastic-knitted one. Daw bayong ah pero indi pa ina ma-consider nga bayong. What a great life indeed.

Then pag-weekend swimming pa gid sa Fort San Pedro bulong kuno sa hapo ko.

FATIMA

WAFFLE near SOCCORO DRUG
eversince ginabalikbalikan ko gid ang waffle dog and cheese nila

CINEMAS
the malls have killed almost (if not) all the stand alone
today kundi indi ukay ukay o bargain store na lang sila, basi abandoned na lang

LEE GARDEN/SUGBAHAN/LUGAWAN SA ILOILO
kanami lang panumdumun hehehe

SUMMER HOUSE
nagsaylo na sila sa may midtown hotel near amigo
brought my visitors there last september
and they cant stop "craving" for the pancit bihon (which for me is just ordinary hehehe )

MANSION HOUSE
pancit guisado memories at its best

DAINTY RESTAURANT
though ara man sila gyapon but i miss their old building
a classic chinese style ambiance
namit ila asado roll hehehe

In addition sa comments mo migo, ari akon share of 80's & early 90's memories of Iloilo:

FATIMA: Ever popular gid man ini nga resto. Basta makapa-ciudad kami ni nanay sang gamay pa ko, always fatima gid kami naga-lunch. Isa pa, one of their cooks, cook anay sa sikat na carinderia sa atubang sang balay namon. Sang ulihi, may ara na sila branch sa atubang sang SM Delgado.

CINEMAS: Favorite ko anay tan-awan sine Cinema kag Golden. Along with Regent, these were the theatres showing the latest films (maski na a month or more delayed compared to Manila's screening dates). Ang Riviera kag Allegro man ya usually showed kinda old double programs ano pa nami man matan-aw kay sulit gid bayad mo. Ang Regent waay ko gawa ginakadtuan kay daw sa malayo sa centro.

SUMMER HOUSE: As stated sa previous post ko, maki soup ang ginaudakan ko da.

SUGBAHAN PLAZA: Daw dira kami kakita away anay mo. Waay kami ya ga-pang-away, natripan lang guro grupo namon. Imbes magginamo, umeskapo na lang kami. Mga talawit ayhan hehehe.

Plus ari pa:

BAMBOO (?) RESTAURANT sa may Iznart St, malapit sa pasilyo pakadto sa Hotel Centercon. Namit man sud-an nila.

Mga CARINDERIA sa Central Market along Iznart St.: Sa liwat, sang gamay pa ko, dira kami nagapamahaw sa aga. Ginalagas ko nga sud-an nila, extra large chorizo ano pa ginaslice kag relyenong kasag.

"SINGLE-DOUBLE" makeshift streetside eatery somewhere near the intersection of Ledesma & Quezon Sts. The food was soup-based, daw sa papaitan nga style sang luto. It was known only as "single-double" to the folks who ate there. Di lang ko sure if what they meant for "single-double" is the serving size. Basta kami anay pag nag-order single lang pirme.

I also remember there was a KONG KEE RESTAURANT near Dainty which also served good pancit bijon and siopao.

NANDING'S sa atubang sang CPU 3rd gate. Nami man batchoy nila didto, a very satisfying alternative sa Teds.

DUNKIN DONUTS sa ingod sang Allegro. It was the first ever successful non-Iloilo based fast food chain na nagbukas sa Iloilo. Years before there was already a Mister Donut in front of Regent along Calle Real pero daw sa waay man sang gabakal. Daw sa manol gid ya mga Ilonngo sa Dunkin sang una. Hamak mo nga ang tawo nga gusto magbakal naga-awas asta sa gwa. Di lang pila, dis-uganay gid ya. But it was a flash in the pan lang gali. After a few months, nagtulutawhay man. What's nice about that branch it was open 24 hours, manami magpangape after a night's gimik.

SMOKEY'S: There was a time where Smokey's (yes, that hotdog chain) had several branches in the city. There was one along Ledesma in front of Golden Theater and another along Iznart beside Amigo. Eventually, Smokey's just disappeared, even in Manila. Outlets in MM are now reduced to kiosk types inside the malls.

STRAWBERRY MEGGY malapit man sa Allegro and Dunkin. It was a small bar with live acoustic performer kon kis-a. Ugaling, daw sa waay man kalab-ot isa ka tuig life span ya.

DISCOTHEQUE: Paborito namon anay kadtoan ang discohan sa may Hotel del Rio. I just can't remember the name. Talagsa man lang ko ya naga-disco ah, kung mahagaran lang. Kung maka-upod kag waay ko klase the day after, ti ginaka-agahan man sa discohan eh. Uso pa nga daan sadto nga music "I'm So Excited". Labugay gid sa dance floor mo.

Manumdom pa ko sang iba...

Isn't that building called "Rosales Arcade" or something like that before it was bought by BPI? BPI only built a new facade but basically its still the same building.

@incognito_rn & kirby21: Mga batang Nanding's kita gle diri. Pirmi ga kaon ila arroz caldo kag batchoy kon kis-a take out. :)

@bernie - Yes Iznart has been renamed as F. Caram but I still call it Iznart. For me, renaming streets only adds confusion especially if there is no proper implementation (i.e. lacking in disseminating information about the name change; updating of street signs - saw a sign near Casa Plaza that says Caram St. but it's hardly noticeable; it's usage must be enforced to all concerned esp. businesses along the affected street; etc.). Another cause for the lack of recognition is the lack of acceptance of the new name.

Wow! Almost palareho ta Shyaman except sang Strawberry Meggy, Discotheque, Single Double and Bamboo:

Here's my addition:

DPWH starts billboard clearout

The Department of Pubic Works and Highways (DPWH)-6 has started dismantling unsafe and illegal billboards on orders of Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr.

The demolition of giant billboards is in compliance with Administrative Order No. 160 issued by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in the aftermath of typhoon Milenyo.

Milenyo knocked down billboards in Manila resulting in the death of a passenger, injuries, road blockage and damage of electric posts and wires and other utilities.

As more typhoons are expected to hit the country in the next months, the DPWH is strictly complying with AO-160 to prevent similar disasters.

DPWH Regional Director Rolando M. Asis has also directed district engineers to de-clog creeks and remove illegal structures within the road-right-of-way of all national roads.

Maximum security set for tourism assembly
By Ruby P. Silubrico

THE Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) will deploy more personnel and augmentation forces along the main roads to secure spectators in relation to Friday's Western Visayas Tourism Assembly (WVTA).

City Police Director Norlito Bautista said more than 50 uniformed personnel would be dispatched Friday when 19 tribes will parade from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Bautista along with Police Regional Director Geary Barias checked Thursday the deployment of troops to assure the safety of spectators in the event that will start from the Freedom Grandstand to Provincial Capitol, Iznart and J.M Basa St.

Sniffing dogs will also be around to detect those who may plan to sabotage the event.

There are also force multipliers that would augment and assist the police. These are the school cadets, police interns, Bantay Bayan and Barangay Tanod members.

"Our men are all ready to safeguard people who would witness today's festival," Bautista said.(RPS)

La Sallette Rennovation and SM Delgado Expansion

you can see the open air cafes being constructed in the ground floor

Pretty soon Iloilo's coffee lovers will have more choices of cafes where they can drink fresh brews. Marymart already has its "La Terraza" put up, across the street SM Delgado is constructing a new building that is going to have spaces available for Cafes and Restaurants and across the street from SM Delgado is La Terraza, which is currently rennovating its ground floor into a strip of open-air cafes and restos.

Halimbawa:
Jaro = Javellana, Jaena, Jocson, Jover; LaPaz = Lopez, Luzurriaga, Ledesma; Guimbal = Gelvezon, Garin, Gargarita; Santa Barbara = Sumagpao, Sumagaysay, etc?

Santa Barbara = S
Miagao = N/M
Calinog = C
Pototan kag Passi = P
San Joaquin/Siwaragan = S
Pavia = G/J (kay tungod na sa una ang banwa sang Pavia parte sang Jaro)
Iloilo (proper) = Y/Z
Tigbauan = T
Leon = C (C is the beginning of the old name of Leon)
Alimodian = A
Igbaras = E/I
Dueñas = L (old name of Dueñas was Laglag)
Passi kag San Enrique = P
Barotac Nvo. = B
Molo = M/P
San Miguel = S

Taga-Passi ko migo. Yes, it was because of the Spanish conquistadores that our ancestors adapted the first letter of the town they lived in as the first letter of their family names. For proper identification bala mo. Sa Passi, mga tumandok didto mga apelyido nagastart sa "P" like Palmares, Panes, Palmes, Panizales, Palomo, Pamplona, Panizal, etc. Sa Pototan letter P man pero lain man nga mga apelyedo. Sa Leon, it's letter "C" because the former name of Leon starts with the letter C. I believe it is only in Iloilo where you find this "phenomenon".

You are correct. Honestly, we are quite frustrated with ICCHC project Save Calle Real. We haven’t seen any concrete action for months already. The buildings should be refurbished and restored so that they would look cleaner in the eyes of the tourists.

thanks for the posting the articles Kirby :)

I just noticed that most new buildings in Iloilo are having vibrant coating… like this one… apple green…exciting and burning to the eyes. Is it really the trend in the city?

I don’t like the roof of freedom grandstand. The design is inappropriate and it is adjunct with the rest of Calle Real. Is it a half salakot? They have to create a new style roof for the whole grandstand.

I noticeds that buildings here tend to follow the color scheme of their neighbors. La Salette's color I think is taken from SM Delgado.

The Roof of the freedom grandstand puzzled even while it was still under construction. It looks awful.

ICCHCC task for the remainder of the year is only organizing itself and catalogueing all heritage structures in the city and also raising funds...no actual restoration is being undertaken or planned for this year(I've read it somewhere in the web, probably a month ago), but rest assured they are there working...

nice to know that the concept of open air cafes/bars/restos and "clustering" is now the latest trend in the city.with two venues already in full sing and some on the rise hope this would make NOT ONLY improve the nightlife but the city's appeal in classy and trendy yet not so expensive scene

by the way i like the design of the building n the top picture
ang site sang mercury durg na bala sa may tupad sang over pass.
ang daw maily railing sa rooftop

pwede man sya (ang building) maredeisgn into a clustered gimik place i mena the building is dominated by restos so why no convert it into a trendy/hip resto/cafe/bar building with some party place at the top

that and all, Whyte. damo lang naagyang ang SM Delgado. From a mere one-building stand alone department store to two building to a mini-mall at present. In few years time, may dugang na naman especially kung madayon ang ila expansion. Tani indi lang restos idugang nila but extension sang mini-mall. Applause, confetti rain on Festivals parade

A SPECTACLE of colors, history and culture.

Thus was the description of local and foreign audience who witnessed the Parade of Festivals of the West Visayas Tourism Assembly at downtown Iloilo City Friday morning.

The much-awaited parade featured 19 festivals from various provinces and towns in Region 6.

One Nicky Samuelson, an American national, only knew of the Ati-Atihan of Aklan, Dinagyang of Iloilo City and the Masskara of Bacolod City. But yesterday’s affair was enough to convince Samuelson to tour the rest of Western Visayas.

“I did not know that there are more festivals in other parts of Western Visayas. It’s good that they came up with this assembly and parade of festivals so that other spots and events will be given media mileage and promotion,” Samuelson said.

South Korean John Song said he will relay what he saw at the parade to his compatriots and encourage them to visit the Philippine particularly Region 6.

Department of Tourism Regional Director Edwin Trompeta said the parade drew attention to other tourist destinations of Western Visayas.

“This is one good example of how unity and harmony can lead to positive results. We hope to sustain the success of this activity in the coming years. It will be a yearly affair as long as we have support from the local governments,” Trompeta said.

But some spectators at the Freedom Grandstand noticed the low turnout of people in the parade.

Ramon Chaves of Jaro district said it would have been better if the parade was held on Saturday to allow more people to see the festivals.

“And they need more media mileage to inform potential tourists of the activities. But this is a good start for the region,” Chaves said.

SCENE STEALERS

Despite the thin crowd at the festival, Bacolod City’s Masskara Festival managed to steal the thunder from host Iloilo City.

Wearing bright red costumes and colorful props, this year’s Masskara champion from Brgy. Alijis, Bacolod City, awed the audience at the Freedom Grandstand with their medley of dance steps and choreography.

What made the crowd go up on their feet was Masskara’s “explosive” finale using confetti cannons.

And it was explosive enough to trigger a brownout in the downtown area after some of the confetti got caught and tripped off Panay Electric Co.’s (Peco) distribution lines.

Kahilwayan Festival of Sta. Barbara, Iloilo showed acrobatics using bamboo poles and platforms, to the chagrin of Peco maintenance and organizers who were concerned that the dancers will also get caught in the power lines.

While it did not perform in the parade, the Paraw Regatta stole the scene as “macho dancers” on board an Elf truck. Paraw organizers said the scene was meant to highlight the “beach fun” concept of the annual sailboat race.

Sinadya sa Halaran, the foremost festival of Capiz province and Roxas City, also made a sterling performance at the parade.

Featuring the celebration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception which falls on December 8 of every year, “Sinadya sa Halaran” literally means Joy in Sharing and showcases the rich cultural heritage of Capicenos and deep devotion to the Almighty through its Patroness, the Immaculate Conception. It is also the time for thanksgiving for all the blessings received from the Almighty the whole-year round.

The Capiz presentation was performed by the Sinaot tribe of President Roxas, Capiz under the leadership of Mayor Raymund Locsin and sponsored by the provincial government under Capiz Gov. Vicente Bermejo.

Parade of Festivals spectators found Sinadya sa Halaran a unique presentation as it is the only performance which depicts the bounty of both land and sea.

“Mermaids and Mermen” garbed in colorful costumes earned the applause of the audience in their-seven minute performance at the Freedom grandstand.

Way up for local tourism

Domestic tourists alone are already a flourishing market to boost the tourism industry, said Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas at the city’s first and weeklong Western Visayas Tourism Assembly (WVTA) that will wrap up Sunday.

An offshoot of WOW Philippines-Region 6 previously conducted in Intramuros, Manila for the last two years, WVTA sought to attract more tourists to visit Western Visayas.

Local government units (LGUs) in the region decided to stage the active tourism promotions straight from home because bringing the travel showcase to Manila was costly and only few visitors could really see the region’s attractions.

“Doing the promotions locally would generate domestic tourism and economic activities at the same time as we highlighted our major destinations. We are even spending less compared before but we are getting our money’s worth,” Treñas told reporters.

With the influx of tourists coming from all over the country, he said the hotels experienced high occupancy rate while food stores and taxi services were also on the run for more than the usual number of clients.

If sustained, Treñas said the WVTA might keep the visitors coming back and bring a great help to the local economy.

A well-traveled executive himself, Treñas noted from his China experience that domestic tourism in the world’s most populous country was booming.

Noting his talks with a Shanghai official, Treñas said he asked whether the “ambitious target” on the tourist arrivals during the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing is attainable.

The mayor added that the said official proudly replied that there are a lot of local visitors, meaning there is already a domestic market.

Treñas even hinted that Boracay, the region’s top tourist-drawer is fueled by domestic tourism.

“Although there are peak periods for foreign travelers, the hotels, bars and restaurants are frequented by local guests all year long. The pump-boat operators are also earning more from the domestic visitors,” he said.

Treñas said that the tourism sector here would be able to establish networks with around 45 tour operators that gathered during the assembly to actively promote both the festivals and familiar places.

Letter "F" nimo ang apelyido? Fernandez ayhan kay damo sila sa Passi, mga manggaranon kag tisoy (as far as the ones I know).
