Pavia’s one-of-a-kind Tigkaralag Festival

THE TIGKARALAG Festival of the municipality of Pavia is the only festival of its kind not only in Iloilo but throughout Region 6. It was started in 1992 by then Sangguniang Bayan Member and now Provincial Board Member Cecilia H. Capadosa.

Tigkaralag Festival (from the root word “kalag” meaning soul) is Pavianhons’ way of celebrating All Soul’s Day.

This is an inter-barangay dance-drama competition where performers in their tigkaralag costumes start their way in a parade from Brgy. Aganan down to the plaza for the competition. Each group consists of 15 to 25 members and are to perform for five minutes in a storyline reflective of tigkaralag.

For the past 14 years, the festival has evolved from the simple dance-drama, with only biscuits for prizes. With Mayor Arcadio H. Gorriceta, the performance improved greatly, as well as the costumes, attracting greater crowd and the reason for increasing the cash awards to the deserving performers.

Ganzon immortalized in life-sized statue
By DAVID ISRAEL SINAY

http://www.panaynews.com.ph/images/headline%20pic.jpg

ILOILO City – The Stormy Petrel. Fighting Colossus of the South. Prince of the Timawa. Father of Free Education. As if these paeans were not enough, former senator Rodolfo Ganzon has been immortalized in a statue unveiled yesterday in the place of his birth – Molo district.

The H.A.L.I.G.I. Foundation put up the life-sized statue of Ganzon – also a former congressman and city mayor -- to honor the man known for championing the cause of the poor.

The unveiling of the statue at the unnamed circle between the Iloilo City National High School and the Technical Institute of Iloilo City on MH del Pilar St. in Molo District followed a mass at the nearby St. Anne Parish and a short prayer on the tomb of the late Ilonggo leader.

Councilor Jed Mabilog, the foundation’s founding chairman, said the project was “a gift of admiration and respect” to Ganzon whose legacy lives on, among them the free education for all public elementary and high schools.

Ganzon started his political career when he was elected number one councilor of the City of Iloilo in 1951. He later became congressman from 1953 to 1955, and from 1961 to 1963.

Ganzon served as Senator from 1963 to 1969 – where he authored and sponsored several legislations that accomplished remarkable achievements in public service – prior to his being elected as City Mayor four times – from 1955 to 1959; 1959 to 1961; 1971 to 1972; and from 1988 to 1992.

The Ganzon Law, the most prominent among his legislations – free and compulsory elementary education – is, until now, being recognized as most beneficial to Filipino children.

Present during the unveiling were the children of the late senator, with his eldest child Marigold Ganzon-Lapascua delivering a message in behalf of the family.

Also present were Mayor Jerry Treñas, Cong. Raul Gonzalez Jr., Vice Mayor Guillermo Dela Llana, Acting Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez Sr. members of the foundation and supporters of Ganzon, among others.

The free spirits of Alimodian

Very recently, leading citizens of this town joined together by a common vision, fired by their commitment to work together for the betterment of Alimodian and its people, gathered and formed themselves to be called the Free Spirits of Alimodian.

They are composed of highly-intellectual men and women adhering to principles they want to achieve and propagate that hopefully will lead to a wholesome and righteous political atmosphere and practices in Alimodian.

Among the group are former Vice Mayor Ramon Anino and former Mayor Bernardo Ambut, the group with a common belief - "that one should leave devotion to worldly needs behind as one pushes forward to a higher level of spirituality to serve God and mankind."

The principle that comes first in the list that they all stand for is the belief that the local government should serve the highest human end -- happiness. It is followed by the beliefs that the fulfillment of the government comes first, not, of the individual; that freedom through self-government requires moral character and critical intelligence; that whoever governs for his own self-interest is a tyrant -- very much subject to trail and punishment by the law.

These are just few of the guiding principles that will bring them to achieving assurance of a brighter future for the next generation and the generations to come in Alimodian.

a good cause for our needy kasimanwas:

GK to build more houses; cops, soldiers next beneficiaries
By Maricar M. Calubiran

The Gawad Kalinga (GK) aims to address 70 percent of the country's housing problem, gearing to build 74,000 houses for policemen and 100,000 for soldiers in the future. It also plans to build homes for teachers, media practitioners and the low-income earners.

Antonio Meloto, chairman of GK, said 40 percent of the Filipinos are landless and without homes. He said GK would like to help the government in putting an end to the illegal squatting and landless problems.

He said, GK is also considering to include members of the media in the worthwhile project. Meloto said there are famous media personalities who do not own a house. He particularly made mention of the television cameramen, who are the possible recipients of the GK project.

In Iloilo City alone, the GK has already built a number of houses. The lots where the houses are built are either in relocation sites or donated by private groups. GK projects are also visible in the municipalities of Concepcion and Barotac Viejo.

GK has been involved in the several projects in the city's different relocation sites. On November 19, GK will also start to build 100 houses courtesy of a telecommunication company and another 130 houses in the land donated by the Archbishop of Jaro.

Meloto, who is originally from Fundidor, Molo was in Iloilo City for the 1st National Convention of the Fraternal Order of Utopia. The Fraternal Order of Utopia also donated two houses to the GK. GK and the Fraternal Order of Utopia are partners in the housing project. Half of the members of the fraternity is already involved in the GK.

Meloto said the local government's help in the success of the GK project is very important. He said the help of each local government unit is very critical as he cited the important role of his fellow Utopian Mayor Jerry Treñas in the housing project.

Meloto said they are not only providing houses but also livelihood to the poor people. "We want to give them the chance to live," he said.

He said, GK envisions that in few years time no more Ilonggos will live on shanties and on the river banks.

In Guimaras, the GK is also set to extend help to residents affected by the oil spill disaster. The group will enter the areas as soon as the relief operation and the siphoning of the remaining industrial fuel oil in the compartments of the sunken MT Solar 1 is over.

Meloto said they will come in the picture after all the "picture taking" is over and when the poor people are forgotten. "Masulod lang kami kon nalipatan na ang mga pigado." They are thinking of building concrete houses for the people in Guimaras.

The plan, however needs the clearance from the municipal government and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau as they are planning to transfer the families few meters away from the shoreline. A group of Filipinos who are now based in Australia will help in the project. The recipients will also be given cottage industry or other means of livelihood where they can go either in fishing or in agriculture , said Meloto.

Iloilo gov't to get power directly from Napocor
By Abigail L. Ho
Inquirer
Last updated 03:31am (Mla time) 11/06/2006

THE ENERGY Regulatory Commission has granted the National Power Corp. a provisional authority to directly provide power to the Iloilo provincial government, despite opposition from a local power distributor.

In a seven-page decision dated Oct. 25, the ERC approved both the memorandum of agreement entered into by the two parties and the contract for the supply of electricity given the prospective savings the Iloilo government would realize under the arrangement.

The Iloilo government said it would pay only P640,739 for a month's electricity consumption if it would get its electricity from Napocor. This was 30 percent less than the average of P977,843 paid monthly by the LGU to Panay Electric Co. Inc. (Peco).

"It is publicly known that (Peco) is buying 99.81 percent of its power requirements from Panay Power Corp. and is charging rates higher than that of current Napocor rates in the Visayas grid," the Iloilo provincial government said in its petition.

"Peco is incapable or unwilling to match the reliability and rates of Napocor. Upon knowledge of the (Iloilo government's) intention for direct connection with Napocor, Peco did not in any way endeavor to offer rates at least equal to that being offered by the former and affirm the reliability of its power supply," it added.

Peco instead argued that a direct connection with Napocor was "an intrusion into its franchise area and a violation of vested rights."

The ERC, however, sided with the Iloilo provincial government, saying that it recognized the suitability of direct connection, particularly in cases where public interest was at stake.

Medyo mahal man magkuha ka franchise nila. Investment required is between P2M to P2.5M kag franchise fee nga P1M good for 5 years. Ga charge sila sng royalty fee nga 5% sng gross sales kag 3% naman para sa marketing support.

Edu Manzano signs up as Iloilo voter, douses political plans

Actor Edu Manzano confirmed Monday that he has received an offer from officials of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats to run for the gubernatorial post of Iloilo province but denied that he has accepted it.

"I have been receiving feelers but the truth is - I have not bothered to consider it," Manzano told abs-cbnNEWS.com.

Manzano, who is chairman of the Optical Media Board, admitted that he registered as a voter of his hometown of Concepcion, Iloilo on Monday. "This is my hometown. I always come here to campaign for friends during election time," he said.

Iloilo Rep. Ferjenel Biron earlier told DZMM that Lakas-CMD officials have endorsed Manzano's candidacy for 2007. He said Manzano would make a strong contender against incumbent Iloilo Gov. Niel Tupas, who is allied with the Liberal Party wing of Sen. Franklin Drilon.

Sa mga kasimanwa ta dira sa Iloilo...

Pwede kamo ka post ka pics ka aton nga mga Tapsihan or those 24-hr hole-in-the-wall eateries?

Me and my friends are fond of Parajan, Tapsilonggo and Quorom. Mga suki gid kami nila. Probably becoz we're night owls. Not partying though. Pero we always love to eat da sa Quorom (tabok sang San Agustin sa may kilid Jalandoni St.). Wala na subong ang Quorom dira (including Caltex) kay ginpatindugan na sng bag-o nga building. Don't know kon nagtransfer lng sila or nagclose-down na gid sila. What I like about it is that the place doesn't discriminate its customers from whatever strata of the society you belong. I miss eating there!

wow! grabe bah....waay gid ko kamaan nga may amo dya nga movement didto...I know this people personally, former mayor ambut is a well-known musician (he is a good friend of my father). veru good gid sya mag-arrange sang mga kanta namon sa simbahan with orchestra pa gid and sya gid and ga-conduct. I sang a couple of his songs nga gin-entry ya sa Ilonggo Music Festival...former vice mayor anino is very active in the church. he was the president of our parish pastoral council when i was there, maan lang kon hasta tulad pa gid. one of the prominent people of the town kag mayad gid nga tawo...

it's nice to hear nga may amo dya nga klase nga movement kay man puro lang material nga bagay ang sa isip kang kalabanan mga pulitiko ka dya nga mga panyempo. ligaan nanda ang spiritual aspect of their governance. ti kundi, ang maka ganansya sa kwarta kang tawo, amo gid ang sulod kang utok nanda...dura ron ang value for the betterment of the community...nangin personal reason ron ang pagsulod sa pulitika...

FYI lang ha

Mercury rising: Rare planetary alignment to occur this week
Agence France-Presse
Last updated 09:19pm (Mla time) 11/06/2006

PARIS -- Astronomers in the Americas, East Asia and Australasia will get a rare daylight treat this week when Mercury passes in a direct line between the Earth and the Sun, a "transit" that will next occur on May 9, 2016.

Skygazers will be able to see Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun, creep across the solar disk as a tiny black dot.

The whole five-hour transit, from 1912 GMT on Wednesday to 0010 GMT on Thursday, can be visible from the western coast of the United States, Canada, New Zealand, southeastern Australia, and the archipelagoes of the South Pacific.

Part of the transit will be visible before sunset on Wednesday in the rest of the Americas and after sunrise on Thursday in East Asia and the rest of Australia.

It will not be visible in Europe, Africa, the Middle East or in Asia west of Burma.

The only other planet that makes a transit from Earth's perspective is Venus, the second planet from the Sun. The last Venusian crossing was in June 2004.

Mercury takes only 88 days to race around the Sun, but it is rarely in direct alignment between the Earth and the Sun because its orbit is tilted. Transits occur a dozen times a century; the last was in 2003.

Mercury is so tiny that transits could not be seen before the invention of the telescope. The first person to witness one was a French astronomer, Pierre Gassendi, in 1631.

His discovery sparked the realization that transits could be used to establish a way of measuring distances in the Solar System.

The method is that of simple geometry -- observing an object from two points that are a known distance apart, which provides the base line for a triangle.

Anyone observing the transit should use safe solar filters on their telescope or project the image onto a screen to avoid damaging their eyesight.

Further information: (http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/OH/transit06.html), (http://skytonight.com/observing/home/4548556.html).

Philippines ranks 121st in
world corruption survey

MANILA -- Corruption in the Philippines continued to worsen last year, according to the global corruption watchdog Transparency International (TI) in its 2006 Corruption Perceptions Index.

The Berlin-based watchdog ranks 163 countries based on perceived levels of corruption among public officials and politicians in its Corruption Perceptions Index.

The Philippines, which ranked 117 last year, dropped to 121 this year, a rank shared by Russia, Rwanda, Nepal, Honduras, Swaziland, Benin, Gambia and Guyana.

The lower the ranking, the worse is the perceived corruption in a particular country. In 2004, the Philippines ranked 102 of 146 countries surveyed.

Iraq, racked by violence since the 2003 US-led invasion, and impoverished Haiti, Myanmar and Guinea were ranked as the most corrupt countries in the world.

Daw masungod man ko bah! Lipatan nyo eskwelahan ko....hehehe! Daw gadula ang kinang sang WIT haw? Naupos na siguro ang kalayo sa torch sang WIT.
Ay san-o pa ayhan magkalayo liwat ang sulo?

Indi magsunggod Lew. Bawi-on ta ina. We must be all proud of our schools back home. Na-out numbered ka lang diri so wala masyado na-mention. Here's my contribution for WIT (Western Institute of Technology):

WIT History

http://www.wit.edu.ph/images/banners/bannerISSA2.png

In the last weeks of September, 1963, a group of engineer-educators with the desire to establish a high standard engineering school in Western Visayas offered to purchase all the unsubscribed stocks of Panay Educational Institutions, Inc. among which was the ownership of the Iloilo Rizal College. This group, which came to be known as the "Organizers of Western Institute of Technology", were:

Ricardo T. Salas
Eugenio J. Dichupa
Jose V. Coruña
Fernando R. Imperial
Homero L. Villasis
Salvador T. Salas
Agustin S. Solleza
Raymundo H. Mombay
Retogo A. Aldeguer
Tomas S. Tolentino
Agatha S. vda. de Ingeniero
Benjamin J. Obed

The school, whose name was changed to Western Institute of Technology the following year, completed its academic year in 1965 with 2,032 students from eight different courses: High School, 1-year Secretarial, 4-year Commerce, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering.

http://www.wit.edu.ph/images/about/inauguration.jpg
Inauguration of W.I.T. in 1964. Shown from left to right: Mrs. Maria S. Salas; Fr. Byrne of St. Clement's Church; Miss Eloisa Yulo, then Director of the Philippine Women's College; Miss Judith Nobleza, then stockholder; Miss Loreto Ledesma, then Vice President for Academic Affairs, University of Iloilo; Mr. Alberto Kilayko, then Dean, Institute of Commerce; Mrs. Maria Berenguel, then Superintendent, Bureau of Private Schools, Western Visayas District, and Engr. Ricardo T. Salas, then President and Chairman, Board of Trustees.

The first expansion took place the following year when the corporation purchased a lot across its site for the Physical Education classes. Four years later, W.I.T. annexed the "New Site", now known as the Ricardo T. Salas Campus in honor of the late founder, behind the St. Clement's compound. This 3-hectare complex was designed for the classroom and laboratory needs of the engineering upperclassmen and the school's auditorium and athletic grounds. The P.E. area was further developed to house the High School Building inaugurated in 1978. It was later renamed as the Science Campus after the High School was phased out in 1986 to give way to the growing population of the tertiary courses.

Through the years, the Institute's academic field enlarged. The Colleges of Engineering, Arts and Sciences, and Commerce strengthened their course offerings, in response to the needs of a growing society. The Graduate School Program was created to satisfy the need of developing a managerial manpower pool for education, commerce, and industry. To this day, W.I.T. continues to excel in academics, sports competitions, and literary-musical contests.

Today, Western Institute of Technology has more than 40,000 alumni scattered all over the islands and the world, many eminent in their fields of engineering, arts and sciences, and commerce.

25, the ERC approved both the memorandum of agreement entered into by the two parties and the contract for the supply of electricity given the prospective savings the Iloilo government would realize under the arrangement.
.......
(taken from: The Philippine Daily Inquirer
link: http://business.inq7.net/money/topstories/view_article.php?article_id=30736)

I am so elated to read this news today. Somehow, prayers were heard above. I hope this will be a good start for Iloilo's electricity battle against PECO. If the provincial capitol can, why not the city government fight for the vulture as well? And I stand for ERB's comment:

"The Commission recognizes the soundness and suitability of direct connection is some cases, specifically in situations where the interest of the public is at stake, and thus, should be upheld."

Thank you so much ERB ! Mabuhay kita tanan !

Franklin Drilon.

link : http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryId=55321

"let the battle begin".

If Edu wins the gubernatorial election in Iloilo come 2007, he'll be the first actor to step-in to Iloilo's political heirarchy. Indeed, it will be a good fight between him and Tupas. If I'm not mistaken, he released a statement earlier this week that he'll barely consider running an office in Iloilo (amidst controversy) eventhough he's a real Ilonggo himself. And that (at that time) he's not a registered voter of the province cos he stayed in Manila most of the time with his family, and has no plan of abandoning the metro at present. So by finding out that he's in the voter's list in Concepcion would mean he can run for any post in the province. And I guess you're right, governor's post is apt for grab especially if he has the support of Malacanang.

Iloilo builds WV’s first flyovers

Iloilo City will become the first urban center in the region to have flyover roads which could to decongest the heavy traffic along city’s thoroughfares.

Mayor Jerry Treñas yesterday said they have presented to Malacañang three flyover projects to be funded by the national government.

The elevated roads will be put up along the streets of Ledesma to Valeria, General Luna to Diversion and General Luna to Jalandoni in the city proper.

The mayor said that only two of the proposed projects might be implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). DPWH engineers from Manila will be here today to conduct feasibility studies of the flyover plans.

The mayor said the engineers will determine areas to be prioritized for the flyover construction. DPWH estimates the project to cost from P30- to P50-million.

“This is good news for the city because this will help address our traffic problem here,” Treñas said.

P40-M Australian aid to benefit tourism plan

A MULTI-million tourism plan is coming up for the Metro Iloilo Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC), courtesy of Australian Agency for International Development (AusAid).

In a meeting with Francis Gentoral of the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI), partner of an Australian firm that won the bidding for AusAID-funded projects, Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas discussed the priority projects to be benefited by the said grant.

“The P40-million project will include studies and implementation of a MIGEDC tourism plan and master development plan,” Treñas said.

The drafting of the tourism plan will be led by former tourism secretary Narz Lim.

MIGEDC, an alliance of Iloilo city LGUs and towns of Leganes, Pavia, San Miguel, Oton and Sta. Barbara and Guimaras, was enacted by the President in August to complement the Central Philippines “mega-region” program for tourism.

Arroyo’s Central Philippines identified “tourism as inherent competitive edge and priority area for investments.”

MIGEDC serves as an economic corridor plan linking Metro Iloilo and Guimaras Island after the President approved the initiative that aims to boost tourism potentials in Western Visayas.

The council focuses on delivery of basic services, environmental management, public safety and security, land use management, infrastructure development, and economic promotion and development.

It also works for local economic development with emphasis on tourism and infrastructure like road and port systems improvement.

Originally the Metro Iloilo Development Council (MIDC) MIGEDC expanded with the inclusion of Sta. Barbara being host to a new airport and Guimaras boasting of tourist attractions.

Treñas leads the MIGEDC with Guimaras Governor Rahman Nava and the town mayors as members.

ILONGGO actor and Optical Media Board (OMB) chief Edu Manzano stirred the hornet’s nest when he transferred his voter’s registration to Concepcion, Iloilo Monday.

Assisted by his lawyer Rey Canindo, Manzano went to the office of Municipal Election Officer Ester Abisan to register as voter of Precinct 91 in Brgy. Polopiña, Concepcion past 11am yesterday.

Manzano, who is originally registered in Makati City, is being convinced by the ruling Lakas-CMD party to run against incumbent Iloilo Gov. Niel Tupas in the 2007 elections.

Election ban won’t stall new Iloilo City Hall

ILOILO City Mayor Jerry Treñas said there’s no stopping the construction of the P350-million City Hall despite the usual ban on public infrastructure projects relative to the May 2007 elections.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) prohibits the release of funds for public works during the three-month election period to prevent incumbent officials from using government money for their campaign.

“The New City Hall is exempted from the election ban on public infrastructure because it is a foreign-funded project by the World Bank through Land Bank of the Philippines. It will push through as scheduled,” Treñas told reporters.

The City government has secured a P350-million loan from Land Bank to finance the construction of the brand new City Hall, which said to be Treñas’ biggest legacy.

Construction of the six-storey building sitting on a 12,000-sq.m old site across Plaza Libertad will begin next year.

The mayor said Architect William Coscolluela, who designed the Iloilo provincial capitol, came up with the blueprint for the new city hall which will take 18 months to complete.

We have sufficient fund sa aton provincial coffer and may development man in terms of economy. Ang problema lang kay iban nga project ni Tupas wala ma-materialised til the present. Like the IT Village in Magsaysay, a 3,000 seating capacity convention center, etc. Daw halos ara lang tanan sa drawing board. And we cannot wait for another election to push through sang project nga ini. Overall though, Tupas' governance is satisfactory. Sguro people will decide back home na lang siguro sina. Re:FlyOver Projects:
The Valeria-Ledesma Flyover, daw indi man ina nami man, it'll make that area very congested. Ugly! plus mo pa dira ang human traffic and ang equally ugly spag wires , tapos dugang pa block nya sa view of guimaras island. The other 2 proposed flyovers i think are ok.

Tsakto ka gid da Migo Incognito. The most nga mahimo nila dira amo ang himuon nila nga through street ang Valeria. Tapos, mahimo sila bridge along Ledesma, flying over the intersection. Indi na gid pwede nga maghimo pa sila ramps kag loops dira, luwas na lang abi kun gub-on nila ang katunga sg apat ka blocks dira nga area... :D

But then, ano ayhan kagamay ang flyover nga ini? Indi ayhan may maguba nga mga existing structures dira?

Nice! You can use mapcentral.ph (http://mapcentral.ph) as a guide if you plan to cover a larger area. If only we were hi-res in Google Earth (sigh..).

Iloilo builds WV’s first flyovers

Iloilo City will become the first urban center in the region to have flyover roads which could to decongest the heavy traffic along city’s thoroughfares.

(link: http://www.theguardianiloilo.ph/topstories7.php
source: The Guardian Iloilo)

This is an expensive, unnecessary, and ugly solution to the traffic problem. The main reason for the traffic in the city is because the jeepneys stop every few dozen meters to wait for passengers! There are even some jeepney drivers who stop at every person they see on the sidewalk. This not only greatly inconveniences their passengers but also the rest of the vehicles they obstruct!

FYI, a vehicle that stops in the middle of the road sends out a 'ripple-effect' to the rest of the vehicles behind who are also forced to stop. If most of the jeepneys just stop anywhere (like they're the only vehicle on the road), the 'ripple-effect' adds up to become a traffic jam.

What we need is proper implementation of traffic rules, an efficient public transport system, and fewer PUJs. The Leganes franchise for example has long been filled. Unfortunately, if an operator has P25,000 to spare, they can be 'exempted' from that limit.

Instead of flyovers, we need more and wider roads. Hopefully, when we do get wider roads, these will not serve as 'extensions' of the parking lots of some establishments in the city. Yes, we need more parking lots too. Traffic lights? The traffic light in the northern Diversion road IS causing the severe traffic in the Desamparados area. Eh kasi naman, two-lane by four-lane intersection nilagyan ng traffic light... haay. If you want that traffic light to work, make the two-lane road one-way. ASAP.

Tsakto ka gid da Kirbs.. Which brings us to the question - Will Edu Manzano be good for Iloilo or not?

- I say... Yes.

Ano matyag nyo?

I think he will do good. He HAS to do good. His fans shouldn't be disapponted. Is he qualified? Isn't there a residency rule or something?

I think people in the outskirts are as mature as people in the city, Sam. It's just too many politicians to deal with. "Too many hands spoil the broth".

Before we heard vote-buying. I just don't know how popular it is at the moment. I hope we'll not be influenced with a small money the politicos is giving us in exchange of our votes. Btw, I can sell mine for 5,000 pesos. Is that okay?

Last elections, some candidates offered P150 and P150 to the voters of the city. All you have to do is to go to your Brgy. Captain and claim it (I didn't claim mine so Kap must be happy). It worked.

^^ Suggestion. Central Business District, di na guid pwede himuon pa sang flyovers.

Outskirts: pwede pa, like General Luna, MH DelPilar, Diversion Road, E.Lopez. Everything but downtown. Rerouting or creating one way streets and no left turns and right turns are ok.

I find those traffic schemes effective here in Cebu. They have a very irregular downtown layout but managed to take effect a very efficient traffic situation in Colon and the rest of Downtown Cebu.

Daw kahapos man lang gani himuon ang pa-one way or no turning system sa aton kay semi-Manhattan ang pattern sang downtown. Its better if they reduce the number also of jeepneys especially JARO CPU!

I don't know why our commercial maps are showing innacuracy about the number of streets in Iloilo. Like I thought that Iloilo has fewer streets. But since this city has one of the densely populated cities in the country, I was not surpised seeing this map in mapcentral.ph

Thanks Rex for the reference.

Now...really our city NEEDS MORE ROADS, MORE STREETS, BETTER INFRASTRUCTURES and AN EFFICIENT TRAFFIC SYSTEM

Remember, Iloilo City's road density is higher than the "global benchmark" but needs more roads as according to AIM in 2002.

Another Arroyo eyeing a House seat?
By Jess Diaz
The Philippine Star 11/07/2006

Another Arroyo may be eyeing a congressional seat in next year’s elections.

Iloilo Rep. Ferjenel Biron told reporters yesterday that there are reports in his district that Ma. Lourdes Arroyo, sister of First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo and Negros Occidental Rep. Jose Ignacio "Iggy" Arroyo, is planning to run for Congress in May.

"I can confirm that she registered as a voter in my district, the fourth district of Iloilo. That has given rise to speculations that she will run and seek my seat," he said.

Biron, who belongs to the ruling Lakas party, said he is preparing for a "big fight."

Responding to a query through text from The STAR, Iggy Arroyo said he was not aware of his sister’s political plans.

"The decision is hers. But as of now, she has not informed me. Thanks for your message," he said.

If the sister of the President’s husband joins the congressional race, she would be the fourth Arroyo who would be running in the May 2007 elections.

Two Arroyos — presidential son Juan "Mikey" Miguel or and Iggy — would be seeking re-election. Mikey represents the second district of Pampanga, while Iggy is the representative of the fifth district of Negros Occidental.

Another Arroyo, youngest presidential son Diosdado, nicknamed Dato, is said to be preparing to run for the Camarines Sur seat vacated by Budget Secretary Rolando Andaya Jr.

Iggy was an obscure Arroyo until he was thrust into the limelight in late 2003 in the wake of the Jose Pidal bank account scandal.

In September that year, opposition Sen. Panfilo Lacson accused First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo of allegedly hiding about P260 million in supposedly "dirty" money by using the false name Jose Pidal, with his secretary, Vicky Toh, and her brother Thomas as dummies. The President’s husband and the Tohs denied the accusation.

Exactly eight days after Lacson made the accusation, Iggy Arroyo came out in the open to tell the public that it was not his brother, the First Gentleman, who owned the Jose Pidal accounts.

He claimed that those accounts belonged to him. But when investigated by the Senate about the deposits, he clammed up by invoking his right to privacy more than 20 times. Senators did not believe Iggy Arroyo’s claim of ownership of the Pidal accounts.

Iggy Arroyo dislodged then incumbent Rep. Jose Apolinario Lozada as Lakas candidate in the May 2004 elections.

The First Gentleman’s brother was the second richest House member last year. He was worth P287.5 million. Biron, on the other hand, ranked fourth in terms of wealth with a net worth of P217.5 million.

Biron also revealed yesterday that actor Edu Manzano registered yesterday as a voter in Iloilo and plans to run for governor against incumbent Niel Tupas. He said he and other Iloilo representatives would support Manzano, who will run under Lakas. Tupas belongs to Sen. Franklin Drilon’s Liberal Party.

Manzano heads the Optical Media Board, a state agency. He was a Makati politician before joining the national government.

He would not be the first to pursue his political dreams by moving to Iloilo. Former Rep. Augusto Syjuco Jr., who heads the Technical Skills Development Authority, suffered at least two electoral defeats in Makati before running for congressman in the second district of Iloilo, which is now represented by his wife Judy.

what will happen to Iloilo's heritage area if they'll push thru the construction of 3 flyovers? I can not relate seeing flyovers and heritage buildings all in one place. Suffice to say, "Downtown Iloilo" is simply transforming into a metro-forest, with all those snaky wires and soon snaky high-roads. I just wish they'll continue the preservation project of Calle Real amidst this upcoming development.

Gub-on ang view sang downtown.

I've heard from Wecky kagina nga ginapaspasan ang airport sa Sta Barbara. It seems nga ma-open siya earlier as expected. Roads to the new airport will be open kuno in two weeks time or by December. I don't know how reliable the info is pero tani mag-open siya dayon before Dinagyang Festival and start of Centennial Celebration of the Oldest Golf Course in the Country, Sta. Barbara (Iloilo) Golf Course and Country Club.

We'll just wait for the outcome of the feasibility study sang mga nag-alabot dira kagina. Though I not really keen to support the idea of too many flyovers in the city pero basi guid man kinahanglan naton. As said earlier, two proposals are worth considering to help decongest the traffic. Regarding siguro sa pagpalapad sa dalan sa aton, daw indi na guid matabo since the old Iloilo's Downtown Area was there na sang panahon ni kupung-kupong pa. And I don't think nga gub-on pa nila mga buidings dira just for road expansion. Again, i support spacewagon and other's idea of re-routing all the jeepneys and making some major thoroughfares in downtown area a one-way traffic.

Ambut gani kung ngaa ang iban maganyat sa kuwarta then kung gin-elect nila nagdaog, sige man sila reklamo. What's there complain kay kita man lang ang nag-boto sina? We just love to take the blame sa mga officials kay ti wala naman iban nga balasulon pero kung tan-awon lang naton, kita guid man ang nagbutang sa ila sa puwesto. I hope we'll learn sang aton leksyon kung may learning guid man nga nagakatabo.

thanks for that "food map" i know where to dine pag balik ko sa iloilo this january
more places for foodtrippers when in Iloilo City, Eric. The map is way too small for the old central business district of downtown Iloilo. But at least it gives you the info on where to find good restos within Calle Real's perimeter (and its neighbouring streets)

http://www.granddame.net/News.aspx?ID=9

found this map sa website sang GRANDDAME HOTEL
its one of the BETTER maps if not the BEST

amo ini project ko subong :D
tourist friendly map
Lovely! Thanks Whyte.

^^ Ang amo na, sa Iloilo Business Club nga ina nga map. "Fascinating Iloilo" na map. It is being sold at Caltex Molo for P15 or if you go to their office or city hall, you can have it for free. :D
15 peso is not bad at all for the map. I'm sure nga kung damo turista dira, puwede pa guid naton pamahalan ang mapa. Actually, buying city maps here in Europe is way too expensive with map costing from 5 to 15 euro.

So Bernie, ginapanghatag lang ini sa City Hall? Kinahanglan individual guid kamo hatagan or you can get a bundle without any further probing?

I've met her once Alimol when I stayed with them in Pasig (man from Pasay nagsaylo si Wecky sa Pasig after .... no comment lang ko sina) for a week. I guessed her name is Dr Edna Amparado. She authored some Zoology books, too kay nakita ko mismo. Wecky used to call her Nene Edna or something like that. I'll ask him tomorrow. hehe. Kasadya magpati sa mga karay-a maghambal. Daw iban lang ko nga kalibutan.

Basi may presscon si Incognito together with Mother Lily Monteverde sa Imperial Palace Suites para sa upcoming nga movie nya with Regal Films sa madason tuig. Dason lagari sya for interviews sa ABS-CBN kag GMA. Basi amo ni ang rason ngaa nagapangita sya hotel sa QC. :jk:
Ara pa si Mother Lily? Buhi pa gali siya? Di ba she used to be the Regal's executive producer? mini-my-ni-mo - wala na guid ko. Again, mamangkot ko sini nga bagay.

Guys, pinuno niyo ang thread. Puro na lang kita balasahon sini. Seeing or reading (or hearing) kinaray-a brings back the best of Ilonggos in me.

Good day to all !

on the other hand, kanugon man tuod kang 1 thou nga di-a...yadi pa ra para sa pira ka kilo nga bugas...however, people really need to do a little bit of sacrifice para sa kamayadan kang karak-an...and dapat nga ibutang sa pwesto, amo ang mga deserving nga tawo nga indi kaduda-duda ang mga personalidad...amo ra guro ang ma-contribute naton sa society para sa ika-uswag kang aton komyunidad.

you wont attract visitors sa isa ka flour mill
this brochure is specifically made for tourists not for investors
pero good work tani mahimo pa gid sila sang updated and this time MORE VIBRANT/COLORFUL to project dynamism and vibrancy

hey Whyte. Ano ang ginhimo mo sa mapa, pinang-tunga-tunga mo?

After grueling political news (Edu Manzano and Lourdes Arroyo) and controversial flyovers, let's pause a little while for an entertainment:

The Best of The Region’s Foodfest & Masquerade Party @ SM City Iloilo
Pagemaker
By Zedrick Señeres

http://www.theguardianiloilo.ph/lifestyle/photo/lifestyle.jpg

In the laudable Western Visayas Tourism Assembly that brought pride to the Ilonggos, one of the highlights was the Regional Foodfest cum Masquerade party held on one cool evening at the Carpark area of the region’s classiest shopping haven, SM City Iloilo.

Foodfest kicked off with the Videoke Challenge 2006, spearheaded by the ever-active members and officers of the Iloilo Jaycees. This noble club gave away a computer unit to one grand winner!

Adding pomp to this colourful activities were, of course, the beer-drinking contests joined in by Cosmo Iloilo’s partyphiles. Fabulous prizes were given away by no less than San Miguel Corporation which celebrated also their Oktoberfest that cool evening.

Highlights included the grand horror masquerade costume contest in line with SM City Iloilo’s Halloween celebration.

Famed ItchyWorms band rocked the glitzy nite with their brand of music charging the air to the endless enjoyment of Cosmo Iloilo’s partyphiles as cool San Miguel Beer flowed till the witching hours.

daw ginasunlog guid kita sining project ni Mayor Trenas. We keep on lobbying "no" to flyovers and even accepted one flyover proposal as part of Jalandoni Bridge project, and now, THREE na guid ang ila ipatindog. Geeeee, the city will look more congested as ever. Ay grabeh !

Huo man Kirbs.

hi kirbs,

nakaagi ka na gali pangwaresma didto kanamon? na notice mo man gali? daw lain gid no compare sa iban nga lugar.

ang custom abi sa alimodian, gapala-uli ang nga abroad kon cuaresma. I used to look forward kang cuaresma since I was small...maan man gani ah kay daw ka lain gid kang atmosphere. daw excited and tanan, mas excited pa sa pista. amo ra nga mas prefer ko mag-uli cuaresma kay tiempo gid ri-a kang mga reunion. halin domingo de ramos hasta sabado de gloria, gagirinutok tawo sa plasa especially huwebes and byernes santo, sus, ga-tiid kaw maglakat kaw sa pagka gutok. then, libot pagka gab-i around the town to visit the "kapiyas" (station of the cross) while eating mani or balut (dahug gid ang mani kag balut) kag tiempo man kang mga lovers mag holding hands while walking and praying to every station. gina-atupan ang bilog nga dalan kag may contest pa nami-nami kapiya. hasta subong, buhi pa man gihapon ang pasyon tu kanamon kag may contest man kon kaisa, ang iban kumpleto pa sa traditional costume such as kimona and patadyong with matching tuba nga ilimnon or taho (luy-a bala nga ginlaga) para tunog kanta nanda kag tagsing limog nanda.

it is a must gid sa mga taga alimodian nga magsaka sa agony hill kon byernes santo kon pwede...te, masaka man ko eh kon kapuli ako. diriwal ruman dila ta ka dya paglambut sa ika 14th station pay didto duro gapamaligya pagkaon kag mga pamahaw...it's an act of "penetensya" bala nga gina kuon nanda. duro man mga turista gaadto pirme especially ra gid nga bag-o ang tatay patabok sa aganan river, makasulod ron ang mga sarakyan sa ubos kang bukid.

domingo de paskwa, gina-celebrate ang bitay..bukon daad ti nami pamati-an abi guro ka iba may biritayon pero equivalent namon di-a kang salubong...ginataw-an gid kang importansya ang ginasakyan kang angel as in nga ginabitay ang ginasakyan, indi ang angel...so, dapat ang mga bata kang may kaya ang angel kay dapat bongga gid ana ginasakyan...for example, bulak nga bukol, dason mahumlad, ma gwa ang angel...indi gani moon nga crescent nga ginatabunan kang clouds, tapos mahawan ang clouds magwa ang angel...and so on and so forth depende sa creativity kang naghimu...

thats the reason why...excited gid ko pirme mag-uli kon kwaresma.

Me, too. How I wish to go home next year kung may sulusobra ang kuwarta after my vacation. Ngaa mang-cuaresma ka guid Alimol? Masaka ka sa Agony Hill? I've been there as well. Sapagkagutok kung kuwaresma and I also liked the way people of Alimodian celebrates their cuaresmas. With kapiyas around and the "salubong" or ang tawag sa inyo "bitay". haha. Two flyovers to rise in city

SunStar
By Jay Dooma Balnig

THE Department of Public Works and Highways is now studying the possibility of constructing two flyovers in Iloilo City.

Emil Sadain, executive director of the President's Bridge Program has asked David Watson of Mabey and Johnson Ltd. to conduct a feasibility study as well as assess the environmental impact of the flyovers.

One will be put up at the junction of General Luna St. and Jalandoni Street and one at the junction of Diversion Road and General Luna Street.

The infrastructures are part of the 10 flyovers that will be constructed all over the country under the President's Bridge Program of DPWH.

Mabey and Johnson Ltd received the communication of Sadain last Oct. 19, 2006.

Other cities that could avail of the infrastructure are San Fernando, Pampanga, Cebu City, Davao City, Camarines Sur, Butuan City and Bacolod City.

The budget for the project is yet to be released by the DPWH.

The DPWH conducted Tuesday a traffic count in order to determine the volume of vehicles passing the said streets.

Pirti gid man ko kasako subong Space.

Again, i support spacewagon and other's idea of re-routing all the jeepneys and making some major thoroughfares in downtown area a one-way traffic.

good news indeed. We'll wait and see. I'm kinda excited with the opening. "The Unveiling of the Gateway" is near.

Makanta naman ko di karon. Medyo punggan ko na lang for the meantime.

WESVARRDEC wins Ugnay Award
Most Outstanding Consortium, P1M

ILOILO City – Sustained research, development and extension activities, strong partnership with local government units, and the successful commercialization of technologies resulting to agricultural productivity catapulted Western Visayas Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium (WESVARRDEC) based at University of the Philippines in the Visayas (UPV) as the 2006 Most Outstanding Consortium in the country for the Ugnay Award with one million pesos worth of grants.

Wesvarrdec bested other 14 consortia around the country in this bi-annual search.
The decision came out after the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD) confirmed the recommendation of the Ugnay Evaluation Committee after the latter conducted a series of internal screenings and field evaluations.

“At last we made it! Even if we encountered some difficulties in running the consortium, we still emerged as the winner. Our efforts paid off,” said WESVARRDEC consortium director Marilou Ang-Lopez when she received the news from PCARRD.

Ang Lopez said WESVARRDEC’s feat would not have been realized without the full support of all member agencies, researchers, scientists and farmers especially.

She added that WESVARRDEC’s active linkages with non government organizations in the advocacy on organic agriculture, local government units in the implementation of Techno Pinoy centers, farmer groups on technology transfer and international organizations on agricultural development efforts have contributed a lot in its outstanding performance.

The consortium’s successful effort in the commercialization of technologies generated especially on vacuum sealed litson Darag, bamboo and mango products that contributed to the regional and national economy likewise had a big bearing in winning the competition.

The prize will be used for its regular operations, implementation of an integrated research and development (R&D) program, R&D results utilization and capability building of its member agencies.

“One million is a big help for us in WESVARRDEC to continuously enhance our R&D services that ultimately benefit our agriculture, forestry, and natural resources (AFNR) sectors, “ said Reynaldo Dusaran, WESVARRDEC Techno Gabay coordinator and dean of the Central Philippine University (CPU) College of Agriculture.

The conferment of the award will be done during the PCARRD Anniversary Celebration on November 10, 2006 at Dusit Hotel, Makati City. A delegation from the region headed by Rochellir Dadivas, WESVARRDEC chair of the regional research and development coordinating council and president of Capiz State University (CapSu) will fly to Metro Manila to receive the award.

Two flyovers to rise in city

........

two's much better than three. BUT we're still not fully supporting a "flyover" project for Iloilo City. Iloilo City looks much, much better without flyovers. It'll make the city's streets look smaller and more congested.

Thanks for posting the news, Markiiboi.

This noble club gave away a computer unit to one grand winner!

ang custom abi sa alimodian, gapala-uli ang nga abroad kon cuaresma. I used to look forward kang cuaresma since I was small...maan man gani ah kay daw ka lain gid kang atmosphere. daw excited and tanan, mas excited pa sa pista. amo ra nga mas prefer ko mag-uli cuaresma kay tiempo gid ri-a kang mga reunion. halin domingo de ramos hasta sabado de gloria, gagirinutok tawo sa plasa especially huwebes and byernes santo, sus, ga-tiid kaw maglakat kaw sa pagka gutok. then, libot pagka gab-i around the town to visit the "kapiyas" (station of the cross) while eating mani or balut (dahug gid ang mani kag balut) kag tiempo man kang mga lovers mag holding hands while walking and praying to every station. gina-atupan ang bilog nga dalan kag may contest pa nami-nami kapiya. hasta subong, buhi pa man gihapon ang pasyon tu kanamon kag may contest man kon kaisa, ang iban kumpleto pa sa traditional costume such as kimona and patadyong with matching tuba nga ilimnon or taho (luy-a bala nga ginlaga) para tunog kanta nanda kag tagsing limog nanda.

Amu-ano man ga-picnic sa park man. Hamak mo panawon mo pira ka kilometro, tapos suhot ka sa talon, antes kami kalab-ot sa kweba. Tama gid tana ka-exciting.

Hi, prettyme! Yung bagong airport ng Iloilo, eh nasa tri-boundary ng Cabatuan, Sta. Barbara at San Miguel towns. The new Iloilo airport of international standards would initially be accomodating domestic flights only, as is the case with the old Mandurriao airport. Maybe someday, it can accomodate international flights, because it was designed to do so, with its relatively long runway and world class terminal building and facilities.

Hope this answers your questions.

Welcome to our thread...

@Whyte... I really appreciate your effort in producing a locator map for Iloilo City. :)

I'd like to point out some corrections needed in the map:

(1) Manfred's Inn no longer exists since it went bankrupt and was converted as the primary office of Panay Electric Company.

(2) Chito's Hotel is at the corner of De Leon and Jalandoni Streets.

(3) It should be Sarabia Manor Hotel (& Convention Center, if you may want to use the complete name). It's been 2 years already since Barceló Hotels and Resorts pulled out of Asia. The Spaniards in the peninsula and the insular Spaniards didn't seem to be in agreement.

Maybe you can also add City Corporate Inn on the map. It's located along Rizal Street and right beside Gaisano Guanco. At the first floor is Dunkin Donuts.

Other that these, it's an informative map of the City Proper and it's immediate periphery. :okay:

____________

Also, I have unconfirmed information about the future location of Kabayan Hotel in Ilolo. It's rumored location is at the corner of Sen. Benigno Aquino Avenue (Diversion Road) and Gen. Luna Street, which is right across UPV. The last time I was in Iloilo, streamers of Kabayan Hotel (Pasay) are on the fence of the said property. Actually a team was sent to conduct a feasibility study in Iloilo sometime in 2003(?) and somebody I know was supposed to take them around the city. ;)

so the old airport will be demolished?

3 towns? akala ko sa Sta. Barbara yung main part nang airport? Is the exit located on the two other towns?

Haay nako i'm so matanong...

The old airport will be bid to interested land developers, notably Robinsons Land, Ayala Land, SM Prime, etc. It is up to the winner to develop it in the manner that they like, e.g., a new mall/commercial development, a new business district with high rises, a new high-end residential area, etc.

The runway of the new airport, if I'm not mistaken is located mainly in Cabatuan. But the terminal can be best accessed from Sta. Barbara. A secondary access is being developed towards San Miguel.

Thanks for being so interested in our city.

If you will allow me, may I know your location?

Haay nako i'm so matanong...

The old airport will not be demolished. future projects are about to be built on the present site of Iloilo's domestic airport. I just don't know if the bidding is over but the old port will probably become a convention center or a mall. The Old airport is located in Manduriao preceded by Iloilo's premier Mall, SM City.
The New Airport of Iloilo is located in the tri-boundaries of Cabatuan-Sta. Barbara and San Miguel. The airport was originally planned to be built in Cabatuan but numerous barricades conflict the construction of the access road, to avoid delay, the entrance was transferred to Sta. Barbara while the Exit is currently being built in San Miguel, Somehow, the port complex including all the airport facilities are located in Cabatuan. the airport will debut on March 2007.

I generally oppose a flyover to be built within the City Proper of Iloilo. What have our urban planners become?

The city badly needs proper planning in vehicular and pedestrian traffic especially in the downtown district. To ease congestion: roads can be turned into one way streets; left turn will be prohibited on two-way street intersections; designation of proper loading and unloading bays; setting up of fences or barriers along the sidewalk to discourage jaywalkers and illegal loading and unloading of passengers; and apprehension or ticket citations to both vehicular and pedestrian ordinance violators. A lot of those hideous elevated pedestrian walkways built in the city are such a waste of taxpayers' money since they're not being used. People just casually cross the street below these structures bearing incoherent and "syntax-error ridden" quotations of an infamous persona.

When I was still a CE student at CPU, we did an informal study of the traffic congestion along Lopez Jaena St. (specifically infront of CPU) for our 2nd year environmental subject and proposed various solutions. Our solution was simple: designate loading/unloading bays and pedestrian walk, no illegal U-turns & jaywalking, PUV's are not allowed to wait if there are no passengers and apprehension to all violators. I didn't finish my CE course though (was up to 3rd year only). I have to switch course before they kicked me out of CoE while I still have my chance of getting back should I decide to do so. I was always absent in my classes that's why. Hehe... I get failing grades/dropped marks due to a technicality set by CHED, which is usually followed by our instructors (no more than 20% absence of total school days in a given semester). ;)

But our local government doesn't operate the way we want/need them to be. Oftentimes, they are inutile and self-serving. Is this project of great magnitude (with respect to Iloilo's infrastructure) meant to decongest traffic or will it serve instead as a monument to their so-called good performance and governance to our city? Election day is coming up. Ain't it time for them to start gettting hold of their combs and bottles of gel for a great pompadour? May the best pompadour wins the 2007 election...

Very well said Oboi. Pamatyag ko, nagagirinual na sila kapangita sang humungous project for them to boast during the campaign season. Gahara-hara gid sila to set the tone of the project while they are still in position. Syempre gwapo ka gid ya kon kada wali mo sa kampanya puro ikaw ang bida kay damo ka project nga nag-umpisa na kag manug-umpisa pa lang.

In fairness to our city officials, their objective to solve the city's traffic problem is noble. Sin-o abi indi maluyag nga magtalatawhay ang byahe sa ciudad. The problem though is the disregard for other feasible means to ease out traffic other than building these fly-overs. They mostly prefer landmark projects to serve as physical evidence of their "accomplishments".

The rest of the image features other prominent and "nice" structures of the province's cemeteries. Tapos sa background blurry image kang mga nitso, low-rise buidlings kuno abi. Butangan dayon title nga Patio City, Iloilo, Philippines. Man-ihi ayhan nanda nga patyo ya sa picture.

First of all, thanks for inroducing Skara Brae to us.

Yes, Migo. It is where Frodo and the other hobbits live. And yes, it is similar with Skara Brae in terms of appearance and environment, albeit the Shire is inland, while Skara Brae is near the shore.

The only difference, I think is the scale. Whereas, Skara Brae is in full scale, the Shire is in hobbit scale.... Hehehehe... :D

Actually a team was sent to conduct a feasibility study in Iloilo sometime in 2003(?) and somebody I know was supposed to take them around the city. ;)

wow. Gadamo na guid hotels sa aton bisan indi pa lang guid dagkuan. The more, the merrier. Maayo guid siguro business ang hotel sa aton subong tungod sa damo bisita kag turista.

Manzano for Governor?, Ilonggo solons in Edu 'fans club'
By Florence F. Hibionada

Actor turned politician and now Optical Media Board chairman Edu "Doods" Manzano is officially a registered voter of Concepcion, Iloilo. As such, his name was now "officially" flaunted as the next possible occupant of the Capitol or even the heir to the congressional throne in Northern Iloilo.

With no firm commitment from Manzano though, all but one of the five Ilonggo solons publicly welcomed his entry to local politics.

City Proper NEEDS a traffic scheme and not flyovers. It'll destroy the integrity of the downtown's heritage preservation.

Flyovers are better in the newer parts of the city such as in Diversion or General Luna.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h141/oboi_1/overpass.jpg

Above are my personal diagrams of the 2 overpasses at the selected junctions in the city. The diagrams don't reflect the actual proposals for 2 overpasses in the city - one is at the junction of Gen. Luna and Jalandoni Sts. and the other is at the junction of Gen. Luna St. and Sen. Benigno Aquino, Jr. Ave.

Maybe it's that little architect/civil engineer (read: frustrated) in me that pushed me to do the diagrams. :D
