REVIVE SICOGON ISLAND !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't heard any tourism advertisement for Sicogon Island... does this mean that the island is already privately owned?

We need to revive this pristine destination... It will boost our tourism industry... anyone who has information about this island please share them here! Sayang ang sicogon kung hindi ito ma-introduce sa public... remember before Boracay there was Sicogon!

Soul, biskan gusto ta man i-promote ang Sicogon, wala kita enough nga photos of Sicogon nga i-post diri. Kung may ara, then puwede gid kita kaumpisa sang isa ka-thread, all for Sicogon. Ang mabudlay lang kay even kita nga mga Ilonggos indi gid masyado familiar sa lugar nga ina. We can package Sicogon and Pan de Azucar. Two of the most beautiful places in Northern Iloilo.

Cogni, nami siguro himuon nga banner sementeryo ta di sa Iloilo. Hiumuon nga centerpiece ang tore-tore bala sa patyo sang San Joaquin(?) nga gin-kodakan nanday Chy. The rest of the image features other prominent and "nice" structures of the province's cemeteries. Tapos sa background blurry image kang mga nitso, low-rise buidlings kuno abi. Butangan dayon title nga Patio City, Iloilo, Philippines. Man-ihi ayhan nanda nga patyo ya sa picture.

Above are my personal diagrams of the 2 overpasses at the selected junctions in the city. The diagrams don't reflect the actual proposals for 2 overpasses in the city - one is at the junction of Gen. Luna and Jalandoni Sts. and the other is at the junction of Gen. Luna St. and Sen. Benigno Aquino, Jr. Ave.

Maybe it's that little architect/civil engineer (read: frustrated) in me that pushed me to do the diagrams. :D

Coalition created for city’s goal to be premiere city by 2015

Mayor Jerry P. Treñas has signed an executive fiat creating the multisectoral coalition for the city (MuCIC) and designating sectoral heads for the public governance scorecard of the Institute for Solidarity in Asia (ISA).

The MuCIC, created by Executive Order No. 46, will primarily provide technical and administrative support to the ISA Core Team and the MuCIC for the realization of the city’s vision of becoming a premier city by 2015.

The coalition also intends to make the second level scorecard in aid of the city’s first scorecard and other related activities to comply with the requirements of good governance and responsible citizenship as well as conduct activities crucial to the identified initiatives and perform other functions directed by the ISA co-chairs.

The coalition will be headed by Canadian Urban Institute regional manager Francis Gentoral. The sectoral heads chosen by Treñas were Desiree Bretaña and Lydia Pendon (media); Vicente Pido and David Bermudo (professional); Marissa Segovia and Erwin Chiongson (business); Lorenza Padojinog and Pablo Española (academe); Roger Sarmiento and Jeriel Borlongan (youth); Rony Firmeza and Benfred Tacuyan (civil society); Vive-Mayor Guillermo de la Llana and Councilor Jed Patrick Mabilog (Sangguniang Panlungsod); Diosdado Cadena and Velma Lao (national government agency); Irene Ong and Bobby Divinagracia (barangay) and Ma. Cristina Octavio and Mary Edurese from the city government.

The ISA Core Team is composed of Treñas and Gentoral as co-chairs, and Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation executive director Benito Jimena and city planning and development officer Jose Roni Peñalosa as technical assistants.

Treñas believes that for the city to achieve the goals identified by the scorecard, the local government should espouse participatory leadership which means working with the multisectoral coalition made up of representatives from the various sectors of society.

The mayor is confident that the coalition will do well in the next evaluation of the scorecards since he has chosen competent and committed individuals he believes are sincere in contributing to the betterment of this city. (Source: Public Information Office)

Soul, biskan gusto ta man i-promote ang Sicogon, wala kita enough nga photos of Sicogon nga i-post diri. Kung may ara, then puwede gid kita kaumpisa sang isa ka-thread, all for Sicogon. Ang mabudlay lang kay even kita nga mga Ilonggos indi gid masyado familiar sa lugar nga ina. We can package Sicogon and Pan de Azucar. Two of the most beautiful places in Northern Iloilo.

Kinahanglan ta pa siguro research about Sicogon kay even ang DOT 6 and DOT Region, wala enough articles to support Sicogon's tourism.

Actually, kung tan-awon mo, Guimaras will be more likely nga i-promote naton compare sa Sicogon kay Sicogon as far as I know is a privately-owned island na.

More input about Sicogon lang da for the meantime.

Because of his Ilonggo roots, he also become very close to Anjannette Abayari (remember her?) who is a Fil-Am originally from Passi (nangin schoolmate ko pa anay sang elementary). Kon mag-kitaay sila nga duha, nami man gihapon sila mag-ilonggo. Bangud sang closeness nila, na-chismis sila nga duha. Haay... showbiz...

heard about Isla Gigantes, Bern and Pan de Azucar. I think may ara sang una nga article about these islands in Concepcion or of Concepcion. Mas manami pa guid tuod i-compare mo sa Boracay. And there's a vast potential for tourism sa mga islands nga ini.

Cabatuan bags local, nat’l awards

ILOILO – The Municipality of Cabatuan must be lucky enough this year as it garnered different prestigious local and national awards.

In a communication sent to Gov. Niel D. Tupas Sr., Cabatuan Mayor Ramon C. Yee said these awards gave honor not only to his municipality but also to the Province of Iloilo.

Yee said the Municipal Station of the Philippine National Police (PNP) was awarded as the Best Municipal Station of the PNP in the Philippines in Police-Community Relations.

This PNP Station was also a recipient of an award as Most Citizen-Friendly Municipal Station of the PNP in Region VI.

The Cabatuan Fire Station was also chosen as entry of Region VI in the Search for Outstanding Municipal Fire Station in the Philippines this year, he added.

Yee added that Decideria S. Bermejo, Cabatuan Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer, was adjudged as Most Outstanding Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer in the Philippines.

Finally, he said, Gloria M. Sumbilla was chosen as the Healthiest Elderly during the Search for the Healthiest Elderly in the Province of Iloilo.

Meanwhile, with these prestigious awards the Municipality of Cabatuan has received, Tupas lauded the persons behind these achievements and the able leadership of Mayor Yee as well with hope that other municipalities will also strive to garner honor for the good of the whole community.

what will happen to Iloilo's heritage area if they'll push thru the construction of 3 flyovers? I can not relate seeing flyovers and heritage buildings all in one place. Suffice to say, "Downtown Iloilo" is simply transforming into a metro-forest, with all those snaky wires and soon snaky high-roads. I just wish they'll continue the preservation project of Calle Real amidst this upcoming development.

duha na lang. Indi man guid nila siguro ibutang sa city proper kay magatok na guid. I want Downtown Iloilo free of any scrapers and flyovers and wires. The old business district looks promising kung maayo lang ang pang-dumala nila. Like mga scrapers nga ini, it's much better kung i-move ina nila sa area like Diversion, the rest of Mandurriao, Jaro to Oton, Pavia, Leganes. Kung tan-awon mo dako pa lugar sang metro Iloilo for development kay ang ciudad pa man lang ang magutok guid. Malapad pa ang coverage sang MIGEDC. Of course, not to mention the whole of Guimaras Province is part of Metro Iloilo now.:)

DENR to put up reg’l ecology center

ILOILO City – Engineer Samson Guillergan of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said the establishment of the Regional Ecology Center in Iloilo is a support mechanism that is expected to make the Solid Waste Management Law more effective.

Guillergan said the coming together of coordinating offices and organizations as a team for the Ecology Center operation can boost local government compliance of Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

Jeanette Sapilan, OIC Chief of the Solid Waste management Unit, Environment Management Bureau (EMB), DENR, noted that LGU compliance of RA 9003, since it became a law six years ago, has been hampered by so many factors, even as the local government units (LGUs) are supposed to be front liners 0n this.

While it is true that many have formulated their Solid Waste Management Plan, only a few have accepted it fully, while mandatory segregation at source has been done, it is often on few pilot areas only, not LGU-wide, and while they have instituted controlled dumpsite, many are still operating open dump sites.

Sapilan said that this low compliance may be brought about by a low level of environmental literacy and awareness of the public on waste management such that they find it hard to cooperate with ordinances to that effect.

There is also the inadequate technical capabilities on the part of the LGUs to respond to the requirements and the indifference of the local officials as far as enforcement is concerned.

EMB Regional Director Bienvenido Lipayon said that this situation necessitates the creation of a Regional Ecology Center which is aimed at providing consulting, information, training and networking services for the LGUs and the general public.

As a support mechanism to RA 9003, the regional Ecology Center shall primarily make information, technologies and other IEC materials accessible to the public and shall serve as a network for exchange and application of available information and technologies.

For Western Visayas, the center will be at the EMB Building in Parola, Iloilo City.

During the initial meeting of the group convened by the EMB, the different agencies presented their commitments in making the Ecology Center responsive in terms of information and services. These agencies include the DENR, DILG, DOST, DPWH, DOH, DTI, DA, TESDA, PIA, DepED, UPV, WVCST, Pollution Control Association of the Philippines and the representatives from the GTZ-AHT SWM4LGUs.

My friend reminded me that the Lizares family of Iloilo had actually hosted Baron and Baroness Maurice de Rothschild in that French-style manse just before the War. Baron Maurice was the father of Baron Edmond de Rothschild of Compagnie Financiere fame, the owner of the Club Med resorts and other prestigious leisure companies.

The Lopez-Vito manse. The Collection of Remedios Lopez-Vito. The very refined Mariflor Lopez-Vito graciously showed us around.

The Beaux-Arts style Ledesma manse. Tita Emma Ledesma’s kitchen made some of the most delicious “lumpias” in Iloilo.

Tita Emma liked to go to Bacolod City to play at the “Casino Filipino” there.

The Lazaro [ formerly Melliza ] ancestral house.

Miss Lazaro was very kind as we proceeded to stomp all over her extremely well-kept home.

The Locsin ancestral house.

“For what???” asked the lady with the expensive Assumption College / Saint Scholastica’s College accent.

Woops. The lady had been ”doing” her face. On the long dining room table. Scattered on the French-polished surface were a standing round mirror and the best cosmetics: Chanel, Lancome, Christian Dior, Prescriptives, Clinique, Shiseido, Shue Uemura. No inexpensive Maybelline and Cover Girl.

The lady had been very busy. We had interrupted her afternoon “grand toilette.” She was probably getting ready for ”mah-jong” with her “amigas”…

I thought that the most interesting thing in the Locsin house was their PreWar white-painted ”paminggalan” [ food storage cabinet ]. The three round tiers inside the cabinet were set on a pin so that these rotated. Thus, it was easier to look for something. It was the product of an imaginative mind!

City Proper NEEDS a traffic scheme and not flyovers. It'll destroy the integrity of the downtown's heritage preservation.

Flyovers are better in the newer parts of the city such as in Diversion or General Luna.

Christmas bonus for City Hall employees hiked

IT'S going to be a Merry Christmas for City Hall employees and casuals because their bonus has been hiked this year.

naubos na traffic scheme nila Bern. They even as the MMDA for help pero wala amn sang nahimo. Kinahanglan lang gid dira is few rerouting and creating better and bigger CBDs outside the city. When it comes sa salakyan, regulated na subong sang LTFRB. Sa pagkadamo nga salakyan, kung kaisa kulang man gihapon. Dagdagan pa nga wal sang nagapati sang traffic rules sa aton. Ang mga salakyan biskan diin na lang nagpundo kag mangolekta pasahero. Ang pasahero naman iya, every lima ka dupa nagapa-para. Ay ambut na lamang dira sa aton sa Iloilo. Wala gid iya pulos ang traffic. Magutok na guid ang ciudad. The downtown area is highly-compact, nga at times daw indi na siya maayo. Time to develop other districts, Diversion area and spread sa mga kabanwahanan nga miembro sang MIGEDC.

I believe we can no longer eradicate Pinoy’s way of life that had somehow restrained our progress as a disciplined society. Take the case of our public transport. Flowering plants on display at Nat’l Floriculture Trade Show

Exotic and rare flowering plant varieties beautify the Iloilo Provincial Capitol grounds as the 10th Philippine Floriculture Trade Show and Exhibits unfolded to public yesterday focusing on the theme “Philippine Horticulture: Bud, Blossom and Beyond:”.

Around 77 cutflower and ornamental plant growers/exhibitors from different areas of the country have joined in the Trade Show and Exhibits.

The 10th Philippine Floriculture Congress, on the other hand, will be held November 14-16 at Sarabia Manor Hotel, this city.

Iloilo Governor Niel Tupas Sr. said during the opening program that “showcasing our floriculture products through trade show and exhibits can create spirit of competitiveness, linkages and networking between the buyers and the growers in the industry.”

The governor encouraged new enthusiasts to engage in the floriculture industry as this offer an encouraging livelihood opportunity.

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas said that with the conduct of the 10th Floriculture Congress, Trade Show and Exhibits, “there’s definitely bright future for this industry.” (T. Villavert/PIA)

It's good that the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, one of the world's largest financial institutions, is coming back to Iloilo. It only shows that our city has gained back the trust of HSBC.

Iloilo Branch was first opened in 1883 and was HSBC's second branch in the Philippines. It was closed in 1981. Its last location in Iloilo was at the same building now occupied by Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation along Ledesma St. and near Valeria St.
that's right Oboi. Soon few more international banks will re-open their branches in the city. Do you remember the Bank of America in front of Payless Plaza? Ara man ina siya gihapon or nag-close naman? Several banks were closed sang una due to Asian crisis and for declining local economy brought about by the infamous mayor of Iloilo City. I hope this re-opening of HSBC will signals a healthy banking industry in Iloilo and in Western Visayas region. HSBC prided themselves with the title of "world's local bank" and has a very good business staunch.

I believe we can no longer eradicate Pinoy’s way of life that had somehow restrained our progress as a disciplined society. Take the case of our public transport. Jeepneys and tricycles are the transport mode of the masses. These vehicles are designed to pick-up and drop passengers anywhere along its route. Decades of this public transport’s flawed implementation cannot be fixed easily, no matter how much political will there is. Iloilo bamboo spawns jobs, investments

ILOILO City – Quality bamboo products industry can now be considered as one of the engines for generating investments and employment, said Director Diosdado P. Cadena Jr. of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) - Iloilo Provincial Office.

Cadena said finest Ilongo products made of bamboo materials are fast gaining international recognition.

“This is the rallying point as to why we push for the conduct of the third Kawayan Market to affirm the positioning of Iloilo as the bamboo capital of the country,” Cadena said.

The third Kawayan Market with the theme “Kawayan Sikat Na” is scheduled to be held November 13-19, 2006 at the Fountain area of the Robinsons Place in Iloilo City.

The annual event, Cadena said, will exhibit the improved products of the bamboo industry of Iloilo alongside with the Hablon Fashion Show featuring the designs of PJ Arañador and five other local designers.

During the week-long, exhibitors will showcase not just bamboo furniture and furnishings but the ready products of key players of the OTOP or One Town One Product of each municipality.

OTOP is a priority program of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo that calls for the development and promotion of products of each municipality that have competitive advantage.

Cadena said around d 36 exhibitors will join in the Kawayan Market, that will showcase their most competitive and current product lines and designs which the public should not miss during the five-day activity.

PIA slates Multi-Media workshop for info officers

The regional office of Philippine Information Agency 6, Iloilo City will be holding a Multi-Media Workshop for Information Officers/Community Development Information Officers (CDIOs), and Tourism and Planning Officers of agencies and Local Government Units (LGUs) from all over Western Visayas on Dec. 4-6 of this year at the Iloilo Grand Hotel, Iloilo City.

Training participation of the information officers will enable them to acquire basic skills in newsletter preparation, use of digital camera and power point preparation.

The new pictures will never replace the old ones ... those are memories, my soul is captured in them. Kag indi lang pictures (5,000 of them that I hoarded since highschool) na delete. Pati na akon poetry, experimental websites (years of development), journals, resources about topics I've saved, my beloved Games that I spent sleepless night on, theses in high school, all my projects since HS up until now, my music collection (pila pa to ka GB), my movie collection (including the ones we make in HS). 90% of my life was saved in that hard drive, and subong na delete.

What is available in the internet is just bits and fargments of tthe whole... the sad part is that I didn't back-up most of them, especially the recent ones. Haay bay-i na lang da, shit happens ...

I'm over it naman ... maybe a little stigma pa nabilin, pero ok na ko... Anyways, nang Kansi ako kagapon sa kansi place near De Paul just to check it out because someone here recommended it. Ok guid ... cheap and delicious, it was my first time eating Kansi

Treñas off to Europe, US anew

FOR the second time, Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas, president of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP), yesterday said a Philippine delegation will be off to a Europe-United States study tour to World Bank (WB) projects Nov. 25–Dec. 3.

Last year, Trenas and other government officials attended a series of meetings with WB bigwigs in France, Spain, Germany, and New York and visited the WB Headquarters in Washington, D.C. The tour discussed WB’s funding strategies for the use of local government units (LGUs).

This time, Treñas was invited to WB’s familiarization of projects and resource mobilization.

Nice intro for the new thread.:) But What sad news Chy..:( How did it get deleted? Perhaps you could still undelete them with file recovery tools. Last time my disk got destroyed during a thunderstorm. I lost a lot of files too. Luckily, I was able to back up some in another computer. Awww, I feel really sad for you. Try not to touch your disk and see if you can salvage the data.

Alimol's Melodic Kinaray-a
I find Kiniray-a fascinating along with its many variations in Iloilo, Capiz and Antique. My brother-in-law has that distinct Northern Antique twang. He leaves me puzzled a lot of times. :) And my Hiligaynon is kinda shallow too with undefined accent. Born in Iloilo but grew up in Manila and came back to Iloilo again. Tagalog and Ilonggo are two languages I need to polish up. Hablo español un poco pero hablo Ingles muy bien.

En las fotos que he visto de Ilolio, hay muchos carteles con nombres y palabras en español aunque, lamentablemente, muchos filipinos ya no conocen su significado pues el español ha sido borrado de Filipinas.

Last night I browsed Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia Standard 2006 version's entry on Iloilo City. There's only a very short description of the city (1 paragraph). Here it is:

Iloilo, chartered city in the western Philippines on the island of Panay. Iloilo, which is located at the mouth of the Iloilo River, is the capital of Iloilo province. The city is an agricultural region where sugar and rice are produced and which has hardwood forests and stone quarries. The principal industries are sugar refining and the production of hand-woven textiles, especially piña cloth. Iloilo is an important seaport and commercial centre. The harbour is protected by Guimaras Island which lies across the strait from the city. Central Philippine University (1905) is located at Iloilo. The city was founded in 1571 and became the capital of the province in 1688. Population 366,000 (2000).

At first reading, I did not find any errors. You might as well miss this: "The city is an agricultural region where sugar and rice are produced..." This statement should have been written as "The province is an..." It has somehow created an impression that the city is not highly-urbanized. :ohno:

I also find it quite amusing that CPU is specifically mentioned. One word... WOW!!! :righton:

The reason why USLS was not included in the ranking is because it’s on a different category – for 100 or more examinees, like most of Metro Manila schools.

Nevertheless, congrats to USLS for also garnering a fair passing rate as compared to other well-known MM schools.

I think that CSA-Bacolod should be the one on the top 2 as based on the passing percentile rate. Congratulations to USLS for getting into the 2nd spot based on the largest number of students who've passed!!!

CSA-Bacolod indeed got a high passing percentage at 80%, but it is ranked on a different category – for 10-25 examinees.

Congrats man sa CSA. Well done!

Hi everyone... I've read this weird report:

Negros, 18 others to get top priority in antipoverty drive

BACOLOD CITY -- The two Negros provinces and four others in the Visayas are among the 20 provinces needing priority interventions due to their vulnerability to poverty and hunger.

Based on the three surveys, Negros Occidental and Iloilo were ranked as vulnerable, while Negros Oriental was ranked very vulnerable.

For me this is very weird. I thought Iloilo has surplus of food crops like rice, etc... How come we are very vulnerable to hunger? I am not really sure but I think this happens in the urban area.

On good side, the government is spending 1 Billion pesos to lower the vulnerability of these provinces.

New Iloilo airport opens on April 2007

ILOILO City – The new Iloilo airport of international standards will open for commercial operations on April 2007, announced Senator Franklin Drilon.

All civil and electrical works at the P6.5-billion airport should be finished this year, and its navigational and landing facilities, and terminal will be tested in early 2007, the senator revealed yesterday.

The first commercial flight at the new airport, whom Drilon considered to be his biggest project for Iloilo, is tentatively scheduled on April 15, 2007.

The Japanese contractor of the airport project is scheduled to turn over the facility to the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) on March 17, 2007, added Drilon.

On the other hand, the old domestic airport in Mandurriao, Iloilo City will be transformed into a commercial and light industrial complex.

Drilon said the commercial and light industrial complex is sure to enhance the economic activity in Iloilo City and Province.

The new airport aims to serve the increasing number of air passenger and cargo traffic in Iloilo, and its influence areas to boost economic development of the Visayas regions, particularly Region VI covering the provinces of Antique, Aklan, Iloilo, Capiz, Guimaras and Negros Occidental.

The existing Iloilo domestic airport is the fourth busiest in the country in terms of passenger traffic next to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Mactan-Cebu International Airport and Davao International Airport, but has been facing problems of obsolete facilities, operational limitations, limited expandability due to existence of roads and rivers, and urbanization around the airport.

Studies concluded that the Mandurriao airport is no longer capable of accommodating future air traffic demand due to technical, environmental and economic limitations, and confirmed the urgent need to develop a new airport.

The new airport of international standards sits on 188 hectares of land straddling the municipalities of Sta. Barbara, Cabatuan and San Miguel, Iloilo.

Meanwhile, the Department of Finance’s (DOF) Assets Disposition Program Task Force had already discussed the “disposal” of the 60-hectare domestic airport with the different national government agencies.

The task force had already convened the DOTC, Department of Justice (DOJ), Department of Budget and Management (DBM), Air Transportation Office (ATO) and the local government unit concerned.

The task force had already chosen an adviser -- the CB Michael Ellis which was also tapped in the conversion of the former US military bases in Pampanga into industrial areas

Well, to answer Waway's query Ateneo de Davao University had a passing rate of 54% (34 passed out of 63 examinees) making it to the Top 5. I stand corrected on this. My fault…:D

Peco assures bright X’mas

Panay Electric Company (Peco), the sole power distributor in the city, assured sufficient electricity supply for the coming Christmas season.

Peco’s Public Relations Officer Carlos Borja said there will be no more rotating brownouts this time due to maintenance operations of engines of the Panay Power Corporation (PPC), Peco’s lone energy supplier.

Iloilo City eyes three-peat
in Clean & Green search

ILOILO City – For the third consecutive year, the city government aims to be the cleanest and greenest highly urbanized city in Region 6 under the 2006 Gawad Pangulo sa Kapaligiran.

Mayor Jerry Treñas issued Memorandum Order No. 486 Series of 2006 instructing all barangay captains, barangay ecological solid waste management committees, all the department heads of City Hall, regional directors and the city schools division to join the annual citywide clean up drive on November 18.

The Gawad Pangulo sa Kapaligiran aims to make sure that various government programs on the environment, particularly on solid waste management, is observed by local government units.

Well, to answer Waway's query Ateneo de Davao University had a passing rate of 54% (34 passed out of 63 examinees) making it to the Top 5. I stand corrected on this. My fault…:D

oo man gani. :lol: :lol: I liked it though at times kay excited kita to see our schools nga ara sa top pero this topic can surely become personal man kung kaisa. Well, it's not the school ang mag-decide kung mangin successful ka or indi but ikaw mismo. Damo graduates dira sang mga unis nga naga-proclaim how good their unis are, etc pero at the end of the day, wala man nadangtan. Wala man changes nga makita sa pangabuhi nila. But thanks for posting them Shy. Sometimes it reminds us that we need quality education back home as well. Sa kadamo nga schools sa aton subong, dapat they have to regulate them na. Probably close the non-performing ones. I have to say, I'm very much a Centralian and I support PRC's decision thru and thru. :) Go for it ! It's the quality that count.

Btw, nakita mo ang Midwife Licensure Exam? Iloilo Doctor's tops the list and New Lucena Polytechnic College student tops the board exam. Well, there you go ....

Ano gani hambal mo sa akon Space sa phone one time, "the higher the salary, the better" ... para may inuglagaw. ha ha ha. Anyway, good for you Eli. Enjoy the better world of nursing. I loved that field though. Wala lang galing gina-offer diri sa UK. Aside from Nurse Anaesthetist, Forensic Nursing is one the best field of our course in town. Galing may halo nga mental health nursing. You need to undergo a Mental Health pathway before ka maka-proceed sa forensic field (more on psychology). And so sorry I have no patience in dealing with psychosis at all. :)

Governor insists Iloilo needs more reliable power

THERE is a need for a power plant in the Province of Iloilo, Governor Niel Tupas Sr. insisted anew.

The reliability of the existing electrical power supply in the province was once again questioned with the entry of more investments.

Tupas said a call center will be put up at the back of the Iloilo Sports Complex at Magsaysay Village and will hire hundreds of employees from the locality.

He added that more investors are coming in with the opening of the New Iloilo Airport of International Standards in Sta. Barbara-Cabatuan, Iloilo.

"We're worried if there is enough power supply here two to three years from now," Tupas said.

Tupas said there is a pending application for a P300-million power plant in the town of Concepcion, which could augment the supply of the National Power Corporation's (NPC's) Cebu-Negros-Panay Grid.

"We really need a power plant here," Tupas reiterated.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Government has shifted its connection from the Panay Electric Company (Peco) to the state-owned NPC grid through the Philippine Foremost Milling Corporation's post.

It filed a petition for such change because of power unreliability.

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) granted this petition.

Connection works will start this week upon the arrival of personnel from the National Transmission Company and NPC.

Earlier, Tupas said the Provincial Government can save P600,000 a month on its electric bill once it's directly connected with the NPC. Presently, its electric bill with Peco reaches P1.2 million a month.

I don't like him as well. He's the one who drove all investors out of the city and we should learn from that mistake. I know that he's had a good heart for the poor of the city but it's not at all what Iloiolo City is about. We need more investors to help our kababayans find jobs and unemployment after they graduated. I'm glad Malabor started to drumbeat the re-entry of Chinese businessmen and Trenas followed it up too well to increase more investors and provide more jobs for our kasimanwas. Wherever Ganzon is right now, may his soul rest in peace. There's a two side of Ganzon. Apparently, the bad one remains in the mind of every city residents til the present. :(

I loved that field though. Wala lang galing gina-offer diri sa UK. Aside from Nurse Anaesthetist, Forensic Nursing is one the best field of our course in town. Galing may halo nga mental health nursing. You need to undergo a Mental Health pathway before ka maka-proceed sa forensic field (more on psychology). And so sorry I have no patience in dealing with psychosis at all. :)

here's few excerpts from the net proving Iloilo City's stance during Spanish Regime;

Iloilo was selected the main venue for the celebration as the city was the last Spanish capital in the Philippines and Asia in 1898.

Drilon said the friendly relationship between Spain and the Philippines has developed into a more lasting concern for the general welfare of both countries, citing Madrid's role in championing Manila's interests in the European Union.

Where the flag of the First Philippine Republic was raised in triumph after Spain surrendered Iloilo, her last capital in the islands, to the revolutionaries led by Gen. Martin Delgado on December 25, 1898. Available transport – jeepney.

In Iloilo City, last Capital of the Spanish Empire in Asia; Governor-General Diego de los Rios formally surrendered to the Independent Federal Republic of the Visayas thru Iloilo City’s “Alcalde” Jose Ma. Gay.

Last night I browsed Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia Standard 2006 version's entry on Iloilo City. There's only a very short description of the city (1 paragraph). Here it is:

Iloilo, chartered city in the western Philippines on the island of Panay. Iloilo, which is located at the mouth of the Iloilo River, is the capital of Iloilo province. The city is an agricultural region where sugar and rice are produced and which has hardwood forests and stone quarries. The principal industries are sugar refining and the production of hand-woven textiles, especially piña cloth. Iloilo is an important seaport and commercial centre. The harbour is protected by Guimaras Island which lies across the strait from the city. Central Philippine University (1905) is located at Iloilo. The city was founded in 1571 and became the capital of the province in 1688. Population 366,000 (2000).

At first reading, I did not find any errors. You might as well miss this: "The city is an agricultural region where sugar and rice are produced..." This statement should have been written as "The province is an..." It has somehow created an impression that the city is not highly-urbanized. :ohno:

I also find it quite amusing that CPU is specifically mentioned. One word... WOW!!! :righton:

It hasn't been changed for a while Shyaman. They're still addressing Iloilo City's economy as agricultural-based. In fact, it is most more diversed than any other cities back home. It oftentimes misleading to any potential visitors and investors to our city.

Travel books are also updated yearly yet only few things were highlighted "as new" for the whole country. I'm not so sure how well the contributors' travelogue across the islands, which seemed untouched for decades and years of economic oblivion in description. It really is frustrating. In Southeast Asia, the Philippines is still the least promoted country. Even Vietnam is ravishing good reviews here in Europe recently. And seems Indonesia is all Bali and Thailand, a Phuket.

New slaughterhouse gets more funding

THE P30-million new Iloilo City slaughterhouse gets more funding for its wastewater facility, City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said.

The new abattoir, which is situated on a 2.3-hectare lot in Tacas, Jaro has gained additional P5 million fund from the National Government and P2 million from Lone District of Iloilo Representative Raul Gonzalez Jr.

These will be for the brand new equipment that could qualify it for an "AAA" standard. Included here is its additional building and lighting.

Treñas said he's glad that the National Government will fund the construction of the abattoir's P4.5-million wastewater treatment facility.

The construction of the abattoir started in March 2005 and is expected to be operational on the first quarter of 2007.

Earlier, the abattoir received a funding of P20.5-million from the Department of Agriculture while the rest came from the City Government's funds and donation of Gonzalez.

As of the present, what's finished is the abattoir's P6-million-worth Building A.

^^I think that bust of him at that unnamed circle along M.H. Del Pilar St. (across Iloilo City National High School) is just the beginning. If that monument gains wider acceptance then most likely they'll push for the renaming of the whole stretch of Gen. Luna St. and M.H. del Pilar in his honor. But they need to pass a bill in order to rename it since it's a national road. :ohno:

Mall given 7 days to comply with requirements

LAWYER Edgar Gil, chief of the City Legal Office, revealed that Tuesday, there was failure to bid for the City Hall of the Future.

He revealed that Robinsons Place Iloilo has only submitted its intent to bid. The bond and the rental rate are still lacking, he added.

He gave the mall seven days to comply with the rest of the requirements. The mall management promised to meet the deadline.

Gil clarified that the City Hall will transfer to its temporary venue on March 2007, not December as earlier reported.

Mayor Jerry P. Treñas intends to follow the proper procurement process that is required by Republic Act 9184 or the Government Procurement Reform Act.

This is an act that provides for the modernization and standardization and regulation of the procurement activities of the government and other purposes.

Governor creates technical working group on climate info

GOVERNOR Niel D. Tupas Sr. recently created a multi-sectoral technical working group on climate information (TWG-CI) in the Province of Iloilo.

In his executive order, he said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has tasked the Iloilo Provincial Government to help organize a TWG-IC to be an official channel of information on climate and on El Niño.

Goat multiplier farm to be established

RESPONDING to the huge demand of chevon not only in the local market but in other countries as well, the Department of Agriculture (DA) through the Livestock Development Council (LDC) will establish a goat multiplier farm at Barangay Aripdip, San Rafael, Iloilo.

The DA-LDC has approved the funding requirement for the project amounting to P140,000, which will be used to buy breeder stocks and development of the pasture area.

According to Johnny Y. Luces, chief, Livestock Technical Assistance Unit (LTAU), the goat multiplier project will be managed and operated by the Aripdip Reforestation Management Association (Arma) being the proponent. They will be given 20 does and one buck as initial stocks for the farm.

i agree with you! he has done more harm than good to iloilo (the plan of san miguel corp to put up the brewery in iloilo but did not push thru because of him?). he does not deserve any monument at all. but then again this is just my opinion.

That's right Adelro. Ganzon does not deserve any recognition at all. Pero respeto lang gid akon about sa monument nga ina nga ginapatindog nila. Tani wala na damo pa nga streets i-honor sa ngalan niya. If they want, they can rename streets of Timawa for him tungod amo ina ang gin-develop niya sang maayo. A deed which gave him several amiable titles in the land.

WV seafarers impress Norwegian ship industry

A big pool of skilled graduates of premier maritime school John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation (JBLCF) in Iloilo City have impressed the Norwegian Ship-owners Association (NSA), according to Stale Torstein Risa, ambassador of Norway to the Philippines.

Iloilo is touted the seamen’s country proven by mushrooming “mansions” built from the earnings of Ilonggo seafarers.

Risa, accompanied by JBLCF President Marylou Arceo, yesterday paid a courtesy call to Mayor Jerry Treñas at the City Hall, after visiting JBLCF campuses in Iloilo City.

The ambassador also visited JBLCF’s training center in Guimaras Island and another campus in Bacolod, Negros Occidental.

Risa noted the NSA and JBLCF have been partners for a nautical scholarship program for 13 years already.

He said JBLCF is one of the five schools all over the country chosen by NSA for the scholarship program which includes a two-year course, one-year on-ship training and another one-year schooling aimed at producing competitive maritime graduates.

In his visit to the campuses here, Risa said JBLCF has “excellent facilities.”

“The NSA is happy to cooperate with JBLCF where they could get the best seafarers. NSA only chose the schools with best quality education practices and can offer their expertise for the shipping industry,” Risa told reporters.

He said NSA has been “very particular” in hiring the finest sea-based workers.

“NSA is very happy about JBLCF graduates because they are excellent. A good number of cadets have good performance and are loyal to the shipowners. They provide the right blend of competence, loyalty and as excellent shippers,” Risa said.

The development of maritime personnel needs adequate school environment with competent equipment and teachers, the ambassador added.

“All scholars will be hired by the shipowners. They know where they are going after school and are lucky for the jobs given by their employers as the companies can choose how many they would like to hire,” Risa said.

Risa said Norway has a large shipping industry, being one of the biggest five in the world with “cross-straiter” cargo ships sailing globally from US to Europe to Japan to Saudi Arabia.

“But we don’t have seafarers anymore; most of them are now working in the oil industry,” Risa said, adding they have been hiring workers from the Philippines, Indonesia, India, China and Russia. Filipino workers are also considered to be the “most popular.”

“Those from the Philippines are the most-sought-after seafarers and more of them are getting hired; women, too, are now engaged in the maritime. Filipinos adept English skills are a plus; they also blend well with the international crew; they have good work ethic,” Risa said.

Meanwhile, Arceo said the 300 NSA scholars this year will be increased to 500 next year. Full scholarships will include free tuition, books, and dormitory.

Apart from structural development, the Iloilo Provincial government is trying its best to raise agricultural economy of the province as well.

Tama ka Space. We should not only focus on tourism and structural development sa aton banwa. Dapat dalasa-on ta tanan nga opurtunidad nga mahimo ta. We lost several years already. Once the city of Iloilo continously picks up economically, dominio effect na ina sa bilog nga Panay Island, Guimaras and whole of Western Visayas. Pero siempre, kita ang mahulag una sa ciudad sang Iloilo being the regional capital of the Western Visayas.

We have good proposals sa aton mga infras. Some of them are underconstruction na whilst the rest are awaiting for funds or budget from the national government. Of course, indi ta man pagpabay-an aton agricultural economy. Dako ang contribution sang agricultural sector sa aton local nga ekonomiya. Some of them were highlighted in Tupas state of the province address.

Maayo guid ini ang nagakatabo sa aton palibot. It'll help eradicate hunger problem sa aton palibot.

‘P207-M water district rehab
projects complete by Dec.’

ILOILO City – Residents of Metro Iloilo and neighboring municipalities that source out water from the Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) will soon experience sufficient supply with the estimated completion of its rehabilitation projects in December.

MIWD Project Manager Jerry Guillergan said they have already completed the rehabilitation efforts in Oton and San Miguel while there are undergoing projects in Maasin and Cabatuan towns and Iloilo City, City Proper district in particular.

Presently, MIWD has accomplished 87 percent of the entire project while in the City Proper the contractor has completed 70 percent of the rehabilitation works.

"There might be some spill over in January but as much as possible, by December all the pipelines would have been rehabilitated," he said.

The P207-million fund was sourced out from the LWUA-ADB Small Town Water Supply Sector Project that was later renamed into Metro Iloilo Water Supply Improvement and Rehabilitation Project.

LWUA is the Local Water Utilities Administration while ADB is the Development Bank of the Philippines.

The rehabilitation started in October last year and the MIWD was given 18 months to complete it.

The project includes the rehabilitation of old pipelines, which were erected in 1926. Guillergan said the leakages from the old pipelines resulted to great system losses on the part of the MIWD.

As soon as the project is completed, MIWD targets to serve some 37,000 residents. At present, it now serves some 24,000 Metro Iloilo residents.

Those who live in areas where the rehabilitation was already completed will now enjoy a surge in water supply.

SM City Iloilo should have been constructed before SM City Cebu was constructed, kay SM was in Iloilo 1979 pa, it was because of Mayor Ganzon's reputation sa mga Chinese nga nadugayan...even the San Miguel Plant in Bacolod kuno should have been constructed here and other projects...nabudlayan lang magsulod during his time...the reason also why Iloilo lagged behind Bacolod that time in terms of investments...

The re-launching of the Iloilo Provincial Government Website

Alas, it's barely five days more to go for the grand re-launching of the Iloilo Provincial Government's website, the www.iloilo.gov.ph. I call it a grand event because the local government units (LGUs) will join us in a simultaneous re-launching their official websites.

We are doing double time this time to iron out the kinks and thresh out the flaws and have some face lifting to make the site does not only appear eye-catching but informative as well. Actually, we literally started from scratch after our website was hacked few months ago. The same predicament was experienced by about 800 LGU websites in the country.

Our site features various provincial government offices and officials, provincial profile and gives links to different local government units (LGUs) of the Province of Iloilo.

It further provides the visitors with the glimpse of the tourism industry of the province and jobs placement for the local residents through the Human Resource Management and Development Office (HRMDO), Provincial Employment and Services Office (PESO) and the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Office.

Capitol news are also given prominence at the front page to give Ilonggos here and abroad of updates of what is happening in the province through developmental news and information.

Few weeks ago, all designated information officers in capitol underwent a seminar-workshop on Web Posting and Uploading and Basic News Writing. This activity served as follow-up of last year's training on the same areas but this time, a basic knowledge on writing press release and uploading were given emphasis to hone IOs skills in preparation to the re-launching of the province's website next week.

Mr. Felipe Vista, IT Coordinator in Region VI, introduced Joomla!, a Content Management System (CMS) which is used in hosting the province's homepage.

Through this simple, browser-based inference, uploading of press releases or news items, managing staff pages, job listing and creation of unlimited amount of sections or content pages become easy while editing of content and updating of images become simple even for non-technical users.

I handled the hands-on press release/news release writing to give IOs better understanding of basic news elements and proper format to follow when submitting their reports. Their functions and responsibilities were given emphasis too, as stipulated in the Executive Order No. 205 of Gov. Niel D. Tupas, Sr. from preparing weekly press releases highlighting offices' accomplishments to coordinating with municipal information officers in gathering news and information.

The Web Development Team never ceases from conceptualizing plans and designs to make the site as user-friendly as possible by providing the internet-goers with the information they need in just a click a way. The team is composed of Eng. Joel Cabaluna, Web Administrator; Melinda Defensor, Webmaster; Tomas Bibangco, Mary Ann Llauderes, Jigger Labergue, Mae Abeja , Leomel Pasquin, members; Felipe Vista IV, R6 IT Coordinator and yours truly, the Webmaster/News Editor. This is a special project of the Provincial Planning and Development Office headed by Provincial Government Department Head Mario Nillos.

Tuod gid man. Mapapugot ko ulo kon may barko nga wala Ilonggo seaman. Dumdoman ko sang mga late 70’s and early 80's, grabe ka imo ya kasikat kung seaman ka. “Overseas” tawag sa ila anay. Daw hasta gani subong overseas man gihapon ang tawag sa ila sang iban.

Sikat gid sila ya sang una. Pagkapanog nila sa barko, “complete sentence” ila lawas. Gakanang-kanang nga daan sa alahas, tanan nga pwede suukan may ara, gadoroble kag daragmul pa. Gabarakintol pa sang appliances. Bigtime! Sila pa lang may Betamax sa banwa. Invited mga neighbours to take a peek. Gamurudlat mata sang ila kasimanwa mo! Tapos, painom diri, painom didto. Sky is the limit ila motto.

Ugaling ang iban, waay gapahuway-huway sa gastos. Ano pa para makasakay liwat, mangutang anay kay kumpare, kundi gani iprenda o ibaligya ang Betamax. Teh, waay gid igo.

In the local scene, particularly in Metro Manila, one job that also attracted a lot of Ilonggos is security guard. Gagirinual sila to sa Manila. Name me a building in Makati that has no Ilonggo guard kay mapapugot ko liwat ulo. Indi gid manigar nga Ilonggo sila bangud sa tono sang ila Tagalog.
