Also, take note that the grading system is something that some people in SSC take a big deal on it. It has been hotly contested, that even the great Manila skyline has been a subject of criticism, especially amongst our neighboring countries. For me, I don't give a damn on the scoring, just promoting what is for Iloilo.

Motocross series returns to Iloilo for 12th leg

THE 2011 ENERSEL Forte Philippine National Motocross Series and World Motocross Series returns to the thriving town of Sta. Barbara, Iloilo, this weekend for its 12th leg of exciting track action.

Top local motocross riders like legends Glenn Aguilar and Jovie Saulog are once again to show their skills in the two-day motocross event which will run from Dec. 3 to 4.

The event, organized by Sel-J Sports, is a continuation of the series designed to revive the interest in motor racing in the country. The motocross series has already done the rounds of the archipelago from Cavite to Lanao del Norte, exciting fans and local townsfolk alike.

The Iloilo leg will also serve as the kickoff event for the first of international races dubbed the “Philippines vs. World’s Best,” where top local riders will test their mettle against racers from other parts of the world.

“[The Iloilo leg should be] another weekend of thrills and gravity-defying action featuring not only our best local riders but also some of the cream in international motocross racing,” said businessman and Sel-J Sports President Jay Lacnit in a statement.

ILOILO CITY, Philippines (PNA) -– Marilyn "Wafa" Kasimieh left the Philippines to seek for greener pastures abroad. She found one, and now shares the fodder with her countrymen.

Kasimieh, now based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), was one of the recipients of the 2011 Bagong Bayani Awardees for Community and Social Service, the highest award given to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) by the Bagong Bayani Foundation in partnership with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA).

She received the award from President Benigno S. Aquino III in a ceremony held Thursday morning at the Malacañang Palace.

“There are thousands out there who share the same story. I am just lucky to be chosen for this award. There are a lot more who are deserving of this and I share this with them,” Kasimieh said.

Her charitable works include providing facilities to hospitals, construction of classroom buildings, scholarship and livelihood support, construction of comfort rooms and fencing projects.

One of the recipients of her generosity is the Dr. Ricardo Y. Ladrido Memorial Hospital (DRYLMH) in Lambunao where she donated among others facilities for the out-patient department (OPD), medical supplies and provisions for hospital rooms.

She also caused the construction of a P4-million classroom building at the Caninguan Elementary School, extended scholarship and livelihood assistance to some 30 beneficiaries, donated around 90 water pumps, and constructed comfort rooms at the municipal cemetery, all in Lambunao town.

Dinagyang Festival

Celebrated every fourth weekend of January to commemorate the Christianization of the natives and to honor the Holy Child Jesus. The best Opening so far...:lol:...I was impressed...

Epic ang 100 flying lanterns with Fireworks...kanami gid ya sang lanterns...daw di ko ya ka get over...:lol:

anyway, the lights were ok compared to last year. fireworks ok man. good thing they added live displays of Jesus' Journey...tawa ko sa mga actors sa kada act kay mga kilala mo teh daw mahamot ka man pay...:lol:

Capitol jobs fair set on Dec. 7

ILOILO CITY, Dec. 2 (PNA) -- The Public Employment Service Office (PESO) of the Iloilo province is calling on all job seekers for a Jobs Fair dubbed as “Alay-Regalong Trabaho (ART) ni Gob sa Pasko” on Wednesday.

PESO Iloilo manager Francisco “Bombit” Heler said 53 companies, composed of 27 recruitment agencies and 26 local companies, will join the jobs fair which will be conducted at the Provincial Capitol Grounds from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Job vacancies include skilled positions, such as Auto Denter, Auto Painter, Auto Technician, Auto Mechanic, Gas Engine Mechanic, Electrician, Maintenance Technician, General Laborer, etc.

Staff positions, such as Accountant, Auditor, Marketing Specialist, Customer Care Representatives, Cashiers, etc. will also be up for grabs.

There will also be a need for engineering and maintenance positions such as Mechanical Engineers, Civil Engineers, etc.

Heler suggested to interested job applicants to be in their proper attire when they come to the venue. He also reminded the job seekers to bring the necessary documents like their bio-data, passports and certificates for easy reference in case needed by the employers.

Heler said hundreds of job opportunities will be open to the lucky applicants.

PPA to upgrade more ports to spur cargo volumes

MANILA, Dec. 3 (PNA) - In a bid to boost the country's cargo volumes in 2012, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) announced that the agency will be upgrading more ports to international standards in order to encourage more cargo ships and companies to use the Philippines as a transshipment point.

PPA Assistant General Manager Raul T. Santos said that development plans are already in the pipeline for key ports located in Manila, Batangas, Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga, Ozamiz, General Santos and Davao.

He added that the PPA estimates cargo volumes to grow by 4.5 percent to 175.40 million metric tons (MMTs) in 2012, slightly higher than 2011's 167.82 MMTs.

In 2010, the country’s cargo volume reached 166.4 MMTs.

The PPA official said that the projected increase in 2012 prompted the agency to increase the capacity of its principal ports.

Its about Iloilo City as one of the most vulnerable cities in the Philippines when it comes to climate change. Sans politics of the newspaper, the question is, is our city ready to face the challenges brought by the changes in weather and perhaps as according to the scientists, the sea level rise?

I've seen this in the news/a documentary yesterday.. i think this is a valid and serious concern.. what's important is that we now have the awareness, now that's one step ahead, next, we have to make steps to prevent the destructive effects of the rise of sea level. Bottomline: Respect and Protect the Environment! This should be every ilonggo's campaign...

The Iloilo Paraw Regatta

Now on its 39th year, the Iloilo Paraw Regatta is the oldest traditional craft event in Asia, and the largest sailing event in the Philippines. The Iloilo Paraw Regatta Foundation currently organizes the activities, with leading support from the Iloilo City and Provincial Governments and the Department of Tourism, along with private sector donations.

Activities have been expanded to spread over a week. On the Saturday of the climactic weekend there is slalom racing on a course by the beach to facilitate crowd participation. On the Sunday, the thirty-kilometer distance race is sailed on a course in the Iloilo Strait, running up the coast of Panay and then down the coast of Guimaras, before returning to the finish at Villa Beach. Participant exposure to the events is in the tens of thousands.

The geophysical shape of the Iloilo Strait provides year round breezes. Thus the working sailboat still predominates. In these times of high fuel costs, and polluting oil spills, one can appreciate the simple ecology of the traditional paraw. Nevertheless, the skills needed to sail are far more complex.

The objective of the Regatta is to celebrate the skills of the paraw sailors, and bring a fiesta spirit into their lives. And with the colorful painted sails, this spirit is brought into the lives of participants and tourists as well.

The principal attraction of Iloilo Paraw Regatta are the double outrigger boats called “paraw”. This native sailboat has been in existence for no one knows how long. But the fact remains that the people of the Iloilo Strait are still to this day using the paraw as a means of transportation as well a source of livelihood. With a fresh breeze, and an Ilonggo at the helm, the paraw is a strikingly fast boat, making 20 to 30 kph through the waves. Indeed, the paraw was the inspiring prototype from which the Westerners have developed what they call the trimaran, the fastest sailboats now on the planet.

THE OUTRIGGERS

Paraws are fitted with outrigger floats of bamboo to stabilize the boat and prevent the slim main hull from tipping over. The outriggers curve upward toward the bow to refine their impact on the waves, and most importantly serve as platforms on which the crew can stand to use their weight to create further stability against the tipping force of the wind in the sails. For maximum speed, the outrigger will not be submerged, but just kiss the surface of the water.

Built up from a carved keelson with plywood planking for the sides, the hull is pointed at both the front and back ends, with the rudder hung off the side astern. The key feature of the hull is its slim shape, with a length to beam ratio of 20 to 1. Such proportions create a knife-like effect to cut through the water, freeing the boat from displacement constraints. Also, sideways drift, or leeway, is largely eliminated. For racing purposes, the boats are divided into classes on the basis of waterline length.

THE SAILS

Originally made from woven matting, sails nowadays are stitched up from synthetic awning materials. The small forward sail, or blade jib, feeds the wind into the powerful, low-aspect driving mainsail, the boom of which extends several feet beyond the boat’s hull. In ideal conditions, the paraw can sail close to the speed of the wind. For racing, no limits are imposed on the size of the sails.
