WV almost PH’s top rice producer

WESTERN Visayas is inching closer to becoming the top rice producer in the country, according to the Department of Agriculture (DA).

DA regional director Larry Nacionales said the region surpassed the 2-million metric ton (MT) mark in rice production last year, higher than its 2010 production of 1.789 million MT.

Nacionales said Western Visayas’ production “helped pushed us to the number two slot in the country as rice producing region.” The number 1 spot in rice production remains with Central Luzon.

Nacionales said the region can capture the top spot this year if Ilonggo farmers use modern processes and machineries in their farms.

“If our famers are already well aware of the advantages of using modern equipments in farming, and the manner or process on how these equipments could be availed of, then we will be improving further our rice production output,” Nacionales said.

The DA official said the number of Ilonggo farmers who use modern machineries remain low as most of them still employ backbreaking manual labor in land preparation, planting and harvesting.

Nacionales said the harvesting phase is the most complex process of rice production as it entails cutting, collecting, bundling, threshing, and loading of grains.

The DA is currently implementing its farm mechanization program where farmers are introduced to farm equipments such as four-wheel tractors, drum seeders, rice combine threshers, dryers, reapers and hand tractors.

The agency is pushing for the Rice Combine Harvester (a machine that combines harvesting, threshing, cleaning, and bagging in one operation) to help farmers hasten post-harvest activities which is usually saddled with manpower shortage.

For farmers who want to acquire modern machines, Nacionales said the government is willing to fund 85% of the cost while the balance will be shouldered by the individual farmer or farmers’ association.

“It is high time to introduce our farmers in Western Visayas to modern farming by using farm machineries and equipments and other post harvest initiatives to attain efficiency in rice farming and self-sufficiency as well,” Nacionales said. (With reports from PIA)

DPWH assures 'good service' roads during Dinagyang Festival

ILOILO CITY, Jan. 13 (PNA) - The Iloilo City District Engineering Office (ICDEO) of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has already been instructed to ensure that national roads located in the city are in “good service”, specifically during the Dinagyang Festival.

In a memorandum DPWH 6 director Evelyn T. Barroso likewise ordered the ICDEO to ensure that roads are safe for motorists and the public who will be flocking the city to witness the Festival with highlights slated Jan. 20-22.

Also the road maintenance is necessary to provide easy access to tribes that are joining the festival.

The ICDEO is also ordered to install motorist assistance station to assist the public, deploy field personnel, on a round-the-clock shift to provide prompt and reliable assistance to motorists on normal and emergency situations.

“Obstructions should be cleared and drainage systems and manholes should be fixed so as to avoid possible accidents,” she added. (PNA)

^^ I loved snorkeling there. Wala pa ko galing underwater bag that time. Gusto ko mag balik ... dungan na dayun sa Garin Farm San Jooquin. Damo2x live corals and fish just within a couple of meters from the shore. Much much better snorkeling than Boracay.

Iloilo climbs higher in rank among 100 BPO global destinations

ILOILO CITY, Iloilo, Philippines — The city of Iloilo improved its rank in a study conducted by an international advisory investment research firm on global outsourcing destinations.

According to Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, Iloilo City ranked 92nd in the newly-released 2012 Tholons Top 100 Outsourcing Destinations. It was six points higher than its 2010 rank.

“Iloilo experienced a significant rise as aggressive development in infrastructure and capabilities development are pursued,” Tholons noted in the study.

Over the years, the city’s business process outsourcing (BPO) industry has grown with the entry of multi-billion investments, particularly in the city’s Mandurriao district.

These include the P1-billion Iloilo-Ayala Land Techno Hub and the construction of the P25-billion Iloilo Business Park at the old Iloilo Airport.

“This shows that Iloilo City is really making a mark as an international outsourcing destination,” Mabilog said.

“We can use this recognition in attracting and inviting outsourcing companies and investors to the city,” Mabilog added.

Iloilo City has previously been included in the Top 10 BPO hubs in Asia-Pacific by global network firm KPGM.

Business Process Association of the Philippines (BPAP) also named the city one of the Top Ten Next Wave Cities in the country.

with regard to the above article's highlighted words in black, i'm inclined to believe that the construction of the coal fired power plant contributed to the improved rankings. obviously, that wasn't mentioned but in the previous rankings profile of the city, stable power with reasonable rates was one of the mentioned concerns that the city back then should addressed. now that the issue is somehow, comparatively stabilized, focusing on renewable and clean energy sources should be given premium. this is especially to address the long term sustainable development thrusts of the city and province.

since tribu bola bola had its swan song in last year's dinagyang, i would just like to go back down memory lane a bit. for me, one of the best opening salvo performances was done by this tribe in 2010. the irreverent, and clown inspired street dance execution elicited consistent animated responses from the audience-spectators from start to finish. methinks the tribe's theme for their opening salvo participation at that time is a parody of the tribe's name itself with "Bola-Bola" as coming to mean as a joke. and that performance was a joke for and on everyone.

in line with that, lemme post again that iloilo city hymn which for me is a very good composition. kudos to the person who created the words and music that serve as our hometown's hymn. for me, the tone and speed of the song are very much reflective of a typical ilonggo's disposition. i also admire the lyrics. very good combinations of the contemporary and the nobility-inspired vintage words. it's one of those songs that when you hear it for the first time, you'd wish to yourself that it is you who made it. that's how i admire this thematic music. simple yet striking and very much spot on as to who we are as a people.

New Iloilo is in Tantangan in South Cotabato, just north of Marbel and a few kilometers south of Tacurong. This area, along with Allah Valley towns (Surallah, Norala, Santo Nino and Banga) is where most Ilonggos have settled due to land available back then. :)

New Passi is in Tacurong City
New Janiuay is in M'lang, Cotabato Province.
New Lambunao is in Tantangan, South Cotabato
New Calinog is at Lebak, Sultan Kudarat (facing Moro Gulf)
New Dumangas in T'boli, South Cotabato
Purok New Leganes in Poblacion, Marbel City (Koronadal) South Cotabato
The town of Aleosan in (North) Cotabato Province
and numerous puroks and local communities in South-Central Mindanao.

But in Mindanao, regardless whether you came from Panay Provinces, Guimaras or Negros Occidental, they are still collectively called as Ilonggo. No Negrenses, No Capiznons, No Antiquenos, No Guimarasnons--those concepts and identities only "originally" exist in Western Visayas. But in SouthCentral Mindanao, its just collectively Ilonggo that speaks Hiligaynon/Ilonggo or Kinaray-a. :)

Well said pre... Without the powerplant, iloilo's economy could have stagnated... At least, we became more competitive...
