‘Kasadyahan’ to display region’s different festivals
By: TW Villavert
THIS YEAR’S Kasadyahan Festival, an event prior to the riotous Ati-ati competition of the Dinagyang, will open Iloilo City’s world renowned religious and cultural festival with a big bang.
Literally, there will be a “cannon blast” as part of the presentation of one participant to the Kasadyahan Festival on January 21 while eight other participants showcasing cultural and religious traditions of Western Visayas.
This was the gist of the discussion of Dr. Eden Deriada of the Department of Education, Region 6, who chairs the Kasadyahan Committee during the PIA-Cable Television program, where she encouraged everyone not to miss this year’s event which promises color, fun and entertainment.
“The event does not only entertain but it likewise educates the spectators of the Ilonggos’ history and culture,” Deriada said.
The Kasadyahan’s color, on the other hand, is highlighted by the participating groups’ props, floats, music, dance, and costumes made from indigenous materials.
On the cannon blast during the Kasadyahan performance, Deriada assured that certain measures will be adopted so as not to harm anyone.
The Kasadyahan’s nine official competing entries are Sigabong sang mga Kanyon of Bago City, Negros Occidental; Mandaragat Tribe of San Jose, Antique; Hugyaw Kansilay of Silay City, Negros Occidental; Tribu Maragtas of West Visayas State University; Sinadya sa Halaran of Roxas City, Capiz; Salakayan Festival of Miagao, Iloilo; Palayag of Buenavista, Guimaras; Panguyang Festival of Tibiao, Antique; and Hubon Sinulog sang Oracon of Sibunag, Guimaras.
The non-competing groups are Kahilwayan Festival of Sta. Barbara, Iloilo; Masskara of Bacolod City; Hugyaw Arts and Dance Co. of St. Therese MTC Colleges, Iloilo City; and Ati-Atihan of Kalibo, Aklan.
“Our visitors will surely enjoy this event, because all the nine competing groups and the non-competing groups were all “bests” in their own respective local festivals,” Deriada said.
The Freedom Grandstand will serve as the judging area number one, judging area two is at the Provincial Capitol grounds, third judging area at Huervana, La Paz, and at the final judging area the Iloilo Sports Complex.

batusay January 17th, 2012, 06:21 PM Iloilo PAO advocates planting of hybrid rice among Ilonggo farmers
ILOILO CITY, Jan. 17 (PNA) – Iloilo Provincial Agriculture Officer Ildefonso Toledo said that he is advocating among farmers the planting of hybrid rice so that the elusive one million metric tons rice production could be achieved.
Dr. Toledo said that the ultimate strategy in order to raise the rice production of Iloilo province and to achieve the targeted one million metric tons is through planting of the hybrid rice that could give higher yield.
According to the survey result released Monday by the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics, the province of Iloilo for the year 2011 had a total production of 959,240 metric tons. This is already very close to the target set by the PAO with only around 40 metric tons lacking.
Dr. Toledo said that although the hybrid rice seeds are more expensive with the price pegged at P2,500 to P3,000 for 20 kilos, which is good for one hectare, ultimately, the farming cost including the labor would be comparable to that of the inbred.
The inbred cost only P1,200 per sack that is why more farmers opt to use it as planting material.
Dr. Toledo said that there’s only less than 2,000 hectares of rice land being planted in Iloilo province with hybrid rice. But the hybrid rice yield is about 10 metric tons per hectare while the inbred yield is only six metric tons per hectare. (PNA)

habagatcentral1 January 17th, 2012, 07:22 PM Kag ang boundary is the Iloilo River?
Most likely, yes. Claro ang pagbutang nila sang demarcation thru the use of the seven districts. Wondering though how much is the population of Iloilo City now? Census 2010 hasn't been released still.
The one who scratched down the Gonzales Bill (earlier petition for creating 2 legislative districts for Iloilo City) earlier was non other than our current president of the republic of the Philippines.

spacewagon0001 January 17th, 2012, 07:51 PM Ilonggo Chinese start preparations for Chinese New Year fest in Iloilo
By: Lydia C. Pendon
“KUNG Hei Fat Choi,” greets every Ilonggo Chinese as the local Filipino Chinese community gets ready for the Chinese New Year celebration.
The Iloilo celebration grows every year since 2003 with Ilonggo Chinese going home for the festival.
The latest count shows that an estimated 20,000 Filipino Chinese living in this city are steeped in Chinese culture and tradition on top of its Ilonggo culture.
Mrs. Fanny Uy, chairperson of the Iloilo Multi-Sectoral Business Organization, said the celebration will start on Monday, January 23 right after the Dinagyang Festival until January 29, 2012 with different activities in the week-long celebration.
The celebration will start with a mass at the Sta. Maria Parish church and the opening of the first Filipino-Chinese Trade Expo at the PNB Hall in Iloilo City.
The trade exposition was recommended by Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog to showcase the many industrial and commercial products of Chinese suppliers in Manila, Cebu and Iloilo.
The Chinese Heritage and Heroism Exhibits will open with the traditional dragon and lion dances and ethnic tribe exhibits.
On the second day, there will be a Wushu exhibition and on January 25, students of Iloilo Central Commercial High School will visit Iloilo City National High School, Sun Yat Sen High School to visit Fort San Pedro National High School, and Iloilo Scholastic Academy to Jaro National High School.
On January 26, a mall show will be staged by Colegio del Sagrado Corazon de Jesus and a Chinese ethnic fashion show will be staged at the Iloilo Grand Hotel to showcase Chinese tribe costumes and dynasty gowns.
The day of the grand celebration is on January 27 with a grand cultural parade along the China town, a food festival, cultural program and pyrotechnics and fireworks display.
On January 28, the Iloilo Central Commercial High School lion and dance troupe will visit SM City Iloilo with Chinese astrology forecast sessions and to meet and greet Tai Shen Yeh “Chinese God of Wealth”.
On January 29, Iloilo San Yat Sen High School lion and dance troupe will visit SM City and Iloilo Scholastic Academy will perform in a show.
Uy said the program will have anti-crime advocate Mrs. Teresita Ang See as guest speaker, with distinguished Iloilo Fil-Chinese singer Josemari Chan, entrepreneur Edgar Injap Sia of Mang Inasal fame, Dr. Alfonso Uy of the Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, basketball star James Yap and businessman Ramon Cua Locsin, among others as special guests.

Simplegurl18 January 18th, 2012, 02:45 AM Most likely, yes.
Then Sen. Pnoy questioned the populace at that time IIRC.

Now, we just need a feedback from Kalte about this. ;)
And many many more HERE (http://www.facebook.com/JerryPTrenas#!/JerryPTrenas).
Sorry it took me this long to respond, i just read my name being called out only now.
Anyway, this is not yet passed as law. Not yet approved. A reading of the two bills shows that both are in the committee stage, meaning, they are at the 3rd stage of the law making process. There are still more stages to overcome a total of 25 stages. The last and final stage of which is the signing of the president. When that happens, the bill becomes a law.
Here, it is not yet signed by the president, plus, it is not complete because the Senate version is not reconciled with the House version.
What may confuse you is the fact that in the last section of the bill, it states its own effectivity clause, which states: 'this law shall take effect 15 days after its publication in a newspaper of general circulation'.
It means: after signing by the president, it has to be published in a newspaper. After it is published, count 15 days and on the 16th day, the law will now take effect and it can now be enforced.
Publication is important, because IF IT IS NOT PUBLISHED IN A NEWSPAPER, it CANNOT be Implemented, even if it is signed by the President. It will therefore become an unenforceable law and cannot convert WVCST into ISU.
In this case, disregard the effectivity clause of the bill, it is just one of the many sections that is incorporated into all bills, it does not give effectivity into the bill. Thus, WVCST is not yet converted into a state university. Its bill is still pending in congress.
The logic applies to the redistricting bills. Still pending, not yet a law, thus, it cannot be implemented.

Bale pre, the senate will not approve this bill because that is not in their power. The senate's role is to introduce a counterpart bill covering the same subject matter.
Tapos, i reconcile pa ina ang version sang senate and house. Pag reconciled na in the bicameral committee consisting of both congressmen and senators, i-forward dapat sa presidente para i-sign, kag para mangin effective, i-publish in a newspaper of general circulation.
In this case, naka indicate sa bill mismo na ara sa committee level and bill, 3rd stage of lawmaking process. Either na plantsa na ini sang house committee on ways and means or manug sulod na ini sa 2nd reading (which is the 4th stage of lawmaking). A total of more or less, 25 steps must be completed for this to become law. 12 steps for the house to take, 12 steps for the senate to take, plus referral to the bicameral, plus referral to the president for signing or veto.
The last act of lawmaking is always the signing of the president.
Kaltehitze Red Blade January 18th, 2012, 04:09 AM sorry haha abe ko approve na gd. bag o lng abe ko bugtaw pag basa ko pero kalag ko tulog pa. pasenxa gd
No prob, lawmaking is always a complicated and confusing process, even for congressmen mismo.
Its just that, for this particular bill, they are posted online so that people may know kung ano nga lawmaking stage ang ila na favorite bill, or kung ano na ang status sini. This is definitely one of the bills that we need to keep on monitoring. From time to time we should post the bills here para ma monitor naton ang progress sang bills, para ma bal-an kung ga hulag or wala. Kung wala ga hulag, then, dapat i-prod ang mga legislators ta regarding the matter.
Gcorneja January 18th, 2012, 04:09 AM Di bala may vacant lot pa ang ISAT dira sa tubang nila?

Kaltehitze Red Blade January 18th, 2012, 04:13 AM Re: Redistricting. Do we need/have a Senate version for this? Looks like they are busy with CJ as of the moment, hehe!
Looks like we have a defined border for the two districts. Northern Iloilo City is of Járo, La Paz, Lapúz and Mandurriao while southern Iloilo City would be City Proper, Molo, and Villa Arevalo.
yep, all laws need a senate version and a house of representative version because our legislature is bicameral, composed of the senate and the house of representatives.

Kaltehitze Red Blade January 18th, 2012, 04:43 AM Incidentally and related to our current topic on laws, if you notice the banner of SSC today, its colored black with the word 'the internet must remain free'.
This has something to do with two bills in the US Senate: SOPA and PIPA.
SOPA: Stop Online Piracy Act.
PIPA: Protection of Intellectual Property Act.
What its about: These are two bills introduced in the US congressthat aims to stop piracy and protect copyrighted materials in the internet.
Websites that will violate these laws (if or when they become laws), will be fined by the federal authorities. Repeated violations will result to a shut down of the website. Other news channels say that websites that continuously violate SOPA and PIPA will be taxed (i don't know if this is true, this is second hand information). If this happens, we forumers may be forced to pay Skyscrapercity.com for us to use the website, considering the amount of copyrighted materials that are being posted in SSC.... That may be one of the possible consequences if SOPA and PIPA will become law.
So far though, SOPA and PIPA are currently at the first stage of law making in the US Congress: Introduction of the bill. SOPA and PIPA were introduced last monday by the way.

Indi ka dapat mahuy-an ah, nobody should. lawmaking is a highly technical process that cannot be understood even by those who are elected members of congress. Even our congressmen and senators have to have staff and lawyers to guide them thru this process, esp. the likes of lapid and pacquiao, ambot na lang na sa ila.
If it is difficult and technical for our senators and congressmen, how much more sa mga ordinary citizens na indi well versed sa mga amu ni nga bagay?
At anyrate, ga anticipate man ako sini na mangin law ang bill converting WVCST into ISU para mahimo na 8 ang universities ta.
I suggest to the mayor's office na mag dedicate sang isa ka portion sa official website sang city hall that details educational opportunities in iloilo which should feature our 7 universities and 10 colleges para potential students will have an easier time in choosing the school to which the want to take their course. =)

METROPOLITAN_ILOILO January 18th, 2012, 07:21 AM Sorry it took me this long to respond, i just read my name being called out only now.
Kung wala ga hulag, then, dapat i-prod ang mga legislators ta regarding the matter.
yep, all laws need a senate version and a house of representative version because our legislature is bicameral, composed of the senate and the house of representatives.
No problem. Anything to help out SSC-Iloilo in terms of knowledge and information.
Its my way of giving back to this forum, by sharing what I have learned. I appreciate the information and knowledge shared by 4threich and lewdsaint in terms of engineering; eonyx in terms of business/finance, bernie in terms of history, culture and heritage; angelkirk when it comes to healtcare; rapuy when it comes to energy and to everyone else who have contributed input to this forum.
This is precisely why I like this thread, indi puro kutso-kutso and suyaanay and istorya kuris-kuris, we share information and knowledge here and I'm happy to help out.
^^
Thanks for your feedback pre Kalte. Very insightful! :okay:
This is precisely the reason why I need your help in this regard since this is your forte and you are more knowledgeable in this aspect. 25 steps? That is bloody hell! I hope our Cong. JPT will do all he can, to make sure these bills pushes through and eventually becomes a law and be implemented! :okay:

This bill seeks to establish a Special Economic Zone and Freeport in the Province of Iloilo to help encourage and accelerate a sound and balanced
industrial, economic and social development in the country, particularly in the
Western Visayas Region.
The Province of Iloilo, is located in the southeast portion of Panay Island
and is bordered by Antique to the west and Capiz to the north, has a strategic geographical location which makes it an attractive and profitable hub for investments in the region. While this measure aims to increase foreign
investments and encourage economic growth in the area, this will definitely result to more employment and increased productivity thereby uplifting the livingcondition of the people.
The Iloilo Special Economic Zone shall cover Barangay Pedada and
Barangay Bay-Ang, both in the Municipality of Ajuy while a Freeport shall be established at the 20.8 hectare Iloilo Commercial Port Complex.

METROPOLITAN_ILOILO January 18th, 2012, 07:57 AM Ilonggo Chinese start preparations for Chinese New Year fest in Iloilo
Alfonso Uy of the Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, basketball star James Yap and businessman Ramon Cua Locsin, among others as special guests.

okey kon madayun nga duwa, pero ang sa Ajuy mas maayo kon ibutang sa Estancia, may established commerce na didto, NIPSC, fish port, PPA port. kag melting pot sang Northern Iloilo kag sang iban nga isla.
unlike sa Ajuy, they have to start from scratch,
lesson learn ta dapat sa mga kapalpakan sang iban
maybe Politics are playing here but that's the problem. kon mapatindog ka man lang sang project kag hilaw dasun daku ang risgo nga langaw ang mangabuhi sa pantalan.
Ano say mo Gob. Defensor?
ang sa Oton no doubt, pwede.
wala ako question, liban lang kon ang duta nga patindogan indi idle agricultural land.

Yes. Most Dadiangasnons or Generals may have little knowledge to fluently speaking in Hiligaynon, as what has been discussed on the past thread. Gensan speaks Bisaya but peppered with so much Hiligaynon or Tagalog words. South Cotabato Province and Sultan Kudarat are predominantly Ilonggo and General Santos is their financial, and transport hub. (Since the smaller Koronadal City/Marbel is the regional capital of Soccsksargen).

Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog said the presence of the two Kenyans paved the way for a more intense competition proving that Iloilo City is gaining popularity as a favorite running destination in Western Visayas.

eonynx January 18th, 2012, 09:31 AM The Iloilo Paraw Regatta
Written by Jonathan Grant
Now on its 39th year, the Iloilo Paraw Regatta is the oldest traditional craft event in Asia, and the largest sailing event in the Philippines. The Iloilo Paraw Regatta Foundation currently organizes the activities, with leading support from the Iloilo City and Provincial Governments and the Department of Tourism, along with private sector donations.
Activities have been expanded to spread over a week. On the Saturday of the climactic weekend there is slalom racing on a course by the beach to facilitate crowd participation. On the Sunday, the thirty-kilometer distance race is sailed on a course in the Iloilo Strait, running up the coast of Panay and then down the coast of Guimaras, before returning to the finish at Villa Beach. Participant exposure to the events is in the tens of thousands.
The geophysical shape of the Iloilo Strait provides year round breezes. Thus the working sailboat still predominates. In these times of high fuel costs, and polluting oil spills, one can appreciate the simple ecology of the traditional paraw. Nevertheless, the skills needed to sail are far more complex.
The objective of the Regatta is to celebrate the skills of the paraw sailors, and bring a fiesta spirit into their lives. And with the colorful painted sails, this spirit is brought into the lives of participants and tourists as well.

eonynx January 18th, 2012, 09:37 AM Incidentally and related to our current topic on laws, if you notice the banner of SSC today, its colored black with the word 'the internet must remain free'.
SOPA and PIPA were introduced last monday by the way.
they're trying to make universal internet access more of a privilege rather than a right. haaayzz!

Iloilo ready to accept foreign visitors
By Lydia C. Pendon
ILOILO CITY – The city and province of Iloilo are ready and able to accommodate visitors from other countries, according to city mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.
The city is currently celebrating this week the 44th year of Dinagyang Festival with an estimated more than one million spectators and participants.
Mabilog said that local tourism officials composed of city tourism officer Benito Jimena, Iloilo provincial tourism officer Bombette Marin and Department of Tourism regional director Helen Catalbas are in Manila to see officials of airlines and ask the inclusion of the Iloilo airport in the travel routes of tourists especially from South Korea and China.
Mabilog said the direct airplane flight from Asian countries would benefit not only the city but also the municipalities of Iloilo with natural and man-made tourist attractions.
The city mayor said that he was in South Korea two months ago, he had met with officials of Incheon City to discuss the possibility of direct flights from South Korea to the Iloilo airport in Cabatuan, Iloilo.
The local tourism contingent currently in Metro Manila is expected to press the direct flight mission assisted by the Department of Tourism and the Department of Transportation and Communications.

now, this reminds me of that korean festival that this korean migratory phenomenon that's been happening to iloilo. that said, they should be cautious about proceeding with this with regard to its viability. although for yearly occations such as dinagyang, they could accomodate these direct flights. but, imo, i'd be happier if kiddo's 2 new domestic year round flights would commence sooner than later.

is clean with improved traffic

ILOILO CITY – Gloria Diaz, the first Filipina Miss Universe in 1969, reiterated her first impression on the cleanliness of this southern city and lauded city mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog for his efforts in keeping the city clean.
Diaz, invited as chief judge in the selection of Miss Iloilo Dinagyang 2012 with a coronation pageant Wednesday, January 18, said the city has also improved its traffic and the smooth flow of vehicles along the main streets is very noticeable.
“All these improvements are implemented by the administration of city mayor Mabilog,” the beauty queen said.
On the other hand, Miss Philippines Shamcy Supsup, third runner-up in the Miss Universe 2011 pageant, said she is highly recommending the city and province as a rest and recreation area for visitors not only for foreigners but for other Filipinos as well.
Supsup said the ambience and scenery upon landing at the Iloilo airport are far different from Metro Manila and the Ilonggos are very friendly people with tasty food and pastries.
“Filipinos should not go far and wide to see tourist attractions in other countries because right here, we have many natural and man-made attractions to enjoy,” Supsup said.
The Miss Dinagyang coronation pageant is considered as a reunion of the Philippines beauty queens in Iloilo City.
Aside from Diaz and Supsup, other judges in the Miss Dinagyang beauty and brains search are former Miss Philippines Evangeline Pascual and Miss Philippines Ma. Isabel Lopez.
