quite a good fete for Robinsons. Kung supermarket lang ni sa Robs, mas dako siya compare sa SM Jaro or Quintin Salas. I think may iba ni siya nga components tapos ang ila grocery, iya lang sang Robinsons cos the building looks really huge for the stand alone supermarket. Remember, dako man da nga daan ang Iloilo Supermart - Molo then Gaisano is also positioning itself sa Oton. I really think apart from Robs Supermaket may ara siya nga iban nga locators. SM na lang wala sa MOLO or MOLO-OTON area. Gina-blockingan na siya sang mga dalagko nga kumpetensiya niya man.:cheers::cheers::cheers::cheers::cheers::cheers::cheers::cheers::cheers:

Re: Robinsons Place Iloilo -- yessss! Expanding pa gid siya iya with hotel component. Exciting times for Robinsons development in Iloilo City.:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

^^
RE highlighted sentence: Hmmm not for long. ;)

Indeed going South, you have Iloilo Supermart Molo, Iloilo Supermart Villa and soon Robinsons Supermarket Molo and Gaisano Oton. Will SM be far behind? ;)

DOT: SELL ONE ILOILO
By: Tara Yap

SELL ILOILO as one.

This is the challenge of Atty. Helen Catalbas, OIC regional director Department of Tourism (DOT 6), to officials of the city and province of Iloilo in the quest to open direct international flights.

The administration of Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. must unite in preparing to open the new Iloilo Airport to the world.

“We must unite as one Iloilo, not as an individual city or as an individual province,” Catalbas said.

Catalbas also noted that unlike majority of the cities and provinces in the country, Iloilo has one name.

Catalbas suggested to take advantage of the name while further cultivating the culture of tourism.

Catalbas also suggested in assessing the potentials of the city and province.

“The facilities are located in the city while most attractions are in the province,” Catalbas noted.

“The city and province should compliment each other, not compete with each other,” Catalbas further emphasized.

Iloilo officials, especially Mabilog, have been lobbying for direct international flights.

However, it was overtaken by the province of Negros Occidental. Last January 7, the new Bacolod-Silay Airport Occidental had its first international flight when 120 passengers from Incheon, South Korea arrived in a Zest Air chartered airplane.

Arturo Alejandrino, Zest Air board of director, encouraged Iloilo officials and stakeholders to share the Ilonggo story to entice foreign visitors

Alejandrino, former executive director of the Boracay Tourism Task Force, said Iloilo’s stakeholders have to shift its focus and not only prioritize festival-based tourism such as the annual Dinagyang Festival.

“There’s more to Iloilo than the Dinagyang. Iloilo has a rich history and culture,” Alejandrino said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) has a P698-million fund for a five-year development plan to reconfigure the P9-billion new Iloilo Airport from current domestic operations into international

^^ I kinda like Atty. Catalbas though. I hope it doesn't end up with words. I laud on what she did for Kasadyahan, bringing different festivities of the region in single hand. Let's see how she perform as the DOT OIC for region 6 since the national government hasn't chosen a regional director yet.

Fil-Chinese group gives P75,000 for fire victims
Date Posted: 2012-01-26

The city government received a check worth P75,000 from the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Iloilo, Inc. (FCCCII) as donation for the families who lost their homes when fire broke out in three barangays of City Proper district on Sunday.

Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog accepted the check donation from officials of the organization in a ceremony held at the City Hall today, January 26.

“We’re grateful to the Filipino-Chinese community here for sharing what they have to our fellow Ilonggos,” he stated.

The amount will be added to other cash donations, and then will be equally divided to a total of 366 affected families from Tanza Esperanza, Tanza Timawa Zone II and Malipayon.

FCCCII chairperson Felipe Uygongco said they responded to the call of the mayor to help the fire victims.

“This is to show our never-ending friendship to the city because we are staying here for good,” the business tycoon said.

He assured that in case the amount is still not sufficient, they are more than willing to raise funds from their members.

The La Filipina Uygongco Group of Companies, which is headed by Uygongco, also donated various items like folding beds, mattresses, utensil, glasses and cups for fire victims. (Lucy Montealto-Sinay/Iloilo City PIO)

Look at the crowd!

As Anton Diaz tweeted, Chinese New Year in Iloilo City in 2013 is something to look forward to since he mentioned that Iloilo has the largest Chinese Community outside of Binondo. :okay:

And he certainly know what he is talking about! :)

Sicogon Island: Soon to be Asia’s best

Having the best of everything—the virgin island has verdant forests, rich flora and fauna, beautiful beaches, and an airstrip that accommodates big planes. Sarrosa said that it has all the best ingredients to make Sicogon a 6-star destination several years from now.

As of the moment, there are four interested investors favoring the island. This include a joint venture from Hongkong and China, from the Europe group, and from the States Asian Business.

Sooner or later, the island will have a lot of facilities to cater to the needs of visiting people. These comprise of a cluster of walk-up timeshare condotel compounds of varying characters that are linked to a common plaza of restaurants, bars, shops, leisure/sports facilities and a hotel, a village of locally operated small hotels for budget travelers and at least a dozen international brand hotels, an enclave of exclusive sea resorts and high-density residential condos for Pag-ibig members.

Not only those, these also include medium density single-detach and medium-rise residential condos for
overseas Filipinos and foreign retirees, a midmarket low-rise condo-residential village, high-end residential villas, very high-end fractional club villas, a convention and trade center, and a commercial and entertainment center.

For the benefit of health and welfare, there will be a hospital and diagnostic center, a health village for spas and reconstructive clinics, golf, polo and soccer clubs, nature islet, dive sites and ocean playgrounds, international school and college for hotel and tourism, a wholesale trading post with ice plant, butchery and cold storage, fishing port and talipapa.

ILOILO CITY, Jan. 19 – All roads lead to the Jaro district come February 2 for the famous Jaro fiesta popularly known as the Feast of Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria or "Our Lady of Candles."

Thousands of devotees throughout Western Visayas and elsewhere in the country go on pilgrimage to Jaro, one of the biggest districts of Iloilo metropolis, to pay homage to the mysterious image of Our Lady of Candles.

No less than the late Pope John Paul II officially proclaimed Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria as Patroness of the entire Western Visayas region following his visit here in Iloilo City during the ‘80s.

During the fiesta celebration, devotees troop in droves to the Jaro Cathedral to pay homage to the regional Patroness. Devotees regardless of their religious affiliations, gather at the Jaro Cathedral to hear mass and buy candles traditionally being sold in and outside of the church compound during the fiesta celebration on the belief that the candles could drive away evil spirits.

Other faithfuls join the long queue of worshipers on their way to the upper portion of the Cathedral to have a close glimpse at the image of Our Lady of Candles as part of their yearly devotions.

Reports have it that the image of Our Lady of Candles possess healing power.

Meanwhile, big time cockfight aficionados throughout the country and even in other countries come to Jaro during the fiesta celebration for the biggest cockfight derbies scheduled to start over this weekend until February 2.

The Jaro Agro-Industrial and Charity Fair was formally opened with a religious procession around the major streets of the district.

Spearheaded by the Archdiocese of Jaro, the colorful procession started 2 p.m. last Saturday with all-out participation of 42 punong barangays of the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC)-Jaro chapter, ROTC and CMT cadets as well as senior citizens and women’s groups, among others.

Adding colors to the procession and parade that lasted until late in the afternoon, were colorful floats and majorettes of different school bands.

Political supporters and several candidates themselves running for top elective posts in Iloilo City were seen during the parade. (PNA) LAP/VLOrquiola/vlo

^^
So aside from Richmonde Tower and Hotel, next is another BPO building and perhaps, part of the First 200m (if not the whole 200m) of a 2km planned Festive Walk as reported during groundbreaking! Yay!

MegaWorld.... Transform!!! :cheers::cheers::cheers:

Thanks for these updates! :okay:

Sicogon Island: Soon to be Asia’s best

Sicogon Island has been working hard for a dream, and that is to be a master-planned and self-contained resort island that is environmentally friendly. It will have a good mix of low and high density resorts and residential enclaves.“Sicogon Island is all natural, its beauty blends with nature,” says Edmund Sarrosa, vice president of Sicogon Development Corporation (SDC) and twin brother of Edgar Sarrosa ,the current president of SDC.
Edmund and his managing colleagues are working for the island to be developed as one of the finest in Asia......continued (http://iloilocityherald.com/site/sicogon-island-soon-be-asias-best/)

CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION GRAND PARADE 2012
by Glenn Opong

acclaimed to have the biggest chinese population outside manila. it shows in how the city celebrates this event. it's a cultural evolution rather a cultural engineering development.

because of this pronounced chinese presence, especially in the downtown area, i wonder if they somehow had a big influence on the ilonggos' historical propensity to save, rather than spend. just wondering.....

Tahum sang ila Pagoda, bagay sa arko. :okay:

And the Cultural Presentation too!

^^
Look at the crowd!

As Anton Diaz tweeted, Chinese New Year in Iloilo City in 2013 is something to look forward to since he mentioned that Iloilo has the largest Chinese Community outside of Binondo. :okay:

And he certainly know what he is talking about! :)

and this could only grow bigger in the years to come. basta january asta february, damu kita sang mga retail outlets sa mga areas wherein these festivals are located. that goes all the way back to december pa gid becasue of the christmas season:cool:

^^

It started with Dinagyang, then Iloilo Chinese New Year Celebration and now, its time for 'Candelaria' or Feast of Our Lady of Candles!

And after all that its time to hit the Villa Beach for the 40th Paraw Regatta!

it's interesting how these festivals all ecompass our intermingling cultures.

1.) the dinagyang which celbrates the ceding of our negrito ancestors of panay's control to our malay forebears, who in turn, were converted to roman catholicism by the spaniards.

2.) paraw regatta pays historical respects to the landing of the 10 bornean datus from indonesia which propagated the malay race in the philippines. panay island is thus, the cradle of the filipino malay race.

3.) the jaro fiesta. a very proud fest that venerates the candelaria and is thus, a religious experience from our european-spanish influence. by extension, it also gives historical respects to the historical pre-eminence that the jaro district once possessed.

4.) the iloilo chinese new year celebration that celebrates not only the traditional chinese new year but also the chinese influence in ilonggo life through the years and also, how iloilo in turn, influenced these chinese.

It's quite politically correct to say that Chinese culture have been deeply rooted to the ilonggo nation, we have been trading with them since before the Europeans came ashore, They value Family more than anything else,

Btw have you heard about historical facts why the Spanish landlords here in Panay went to the other island? Its because the locals asserted their rights to their faces.. now that's what I call true blue powerful middle class Ganzon fondly calls TIMAWANS..

mechanical and cliche.

Additional info. Molo is also a PARIAN (http://andresalvador.smugmug.com/Travel-My-Philippines/MOLO-ILOILO-PHILIPPINES/7624902_ccfjzx#!i=493055561&k=6N2bG) (Chinatown)

Long before the Spanish colonization of the Philippines, Iloilo was already having a flourishing trade with the Chinese through Molo. Some of the Chinese traders eventually decided to settle down in the place and took local women as their wives. Thus, upon the arrival of the Spaniards, they found Molo already having a considerable number of Chinese inhabitants who were engaged in the buy-and-sell business. Today, the descendants of these early Chinese settlers can be found in such names as Consing, Ditching, Lacson, Layson, Locsin, Yulo and Yusay. On the part of the native Moleños, it can be found in family names like Mabilog, Mabaquiao, Mabunay, Macalalag, Magahum, Maluto and Mejica (Ibid).

SOURCE (http://www.thenewstoday.info/2009/07/24/molo.iloilo.html)

That is why, until ow there are lots of Fil-Chinese residing in Molo. Also,

Manila, Cebu and Iloilo had the most significant concentrations of Chinese in the Philippines in the 19th century, hence a Chinese cemetery (http://myphilippinelife.com/iloilo-chinese-cemetery-molo-iloilo-city/).

SEAT-UP (Samahan ng mga Estudyante at Tsuper sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas) has been formed to cater the UPV campus route (IKOT and TOKI version of UPDil). Now I think its 5 or 6 na lang. But at night it can go up to 7 or 8. :) Where these tricycles originaly ply, the passengers can go as high as 12 (others being atop sang "atup". :)

Whoever he/she is, they haven't faced the wrath of Professor Tita Torio of UP Visayas, who's expertise is about the history of Chinese community in the Philippines. They might be shocked with some of the facts regarding the Filipino-Chinese community in Iloilo. In fact, a lot of well-known Ilonggo families have Chinese ancestry, hence Parian or what is now known as Molo. Let's ask the Locsins about that? The Hiligaynon language that we all know has a bit of Chinese influence about it.

Also, the Chinese community itself has already been featured several times, and recently in the Lopez's coffeetable book "Iloilo: A Rich and Noble Land." One section there is dedicated to the Chinese community. If our Chinatown was "artificially" made, then by all means nail me in the cross right now!

If one claims it as a fact, it has to be backed-up by citations and evidences. Otherwise, an argument doesn't hold water, especially if it questions the integrity of another argument.

A lot that I have forgotten it myself. Most of our lessons with Ma'am Tita were about East Asia's modern history, but she has material regarding the Chinese community in Iloilo. Vice Chancellor Mabunay is an expert in Japanese studies, especially the history of the Japanese people here in Iloilo. She said that there was even a Japanese school in the present day Baybay-Tanza (back then called Estancia) which is now near Bonifacio Monument at Ledesma corner Rizal Streets. :)

Lot of materials at Center for West Visayas Studies regarding the study of our region, our people and our culture. To the point that even some unconventional topics about it are there such as this...

I miss those days. These tryks were our "saviours" during those times, especially during rehersal nights for the cheer-dance competition at Sportsfest. That terminal has two routes: "Banwa" ukon "Dorm" :D

:) Dorm and banwa it is. And they are making money during and before the Foundation Week and Sportsfest. Very powerful also considering they have to climb the steep hills of UP Visayas. :okay:

Haven't heard of her talking about it yet, but this seems interesting. Given the fact that opium was one powerful substance that changed history. I'll ask her about it if I have time. :)

This one is Pasajero Sosyal.
Yeah. Each jeepney manufacturer has its own distinct mark. Joroshelly is more boxy (a mark of Jaro and Leganes jeepney lines) while Pasajero Sosyal and Indian Serenade almost looks the same, but for parokyanos, they differ. Patoo Wheels is sleeker and lower, makes Oton and Villa jeeps distinct.

A true mark of Ilonggo craftsmanship. :okay:

And I dare him to say those statements in front of their chi-fils and I am pretty sure he will receive a slap. Walang respeto sa mga katigulangan, sa ancestors. He should realize that in chinese culture ancestry is very important.

SOURCE: http://www.thenewstoday.info/2009/07/24/molo.iloilo.html

That is why, until ow there are lots of Fil-Chinese residing in Molo. Also,

Manila, Cebu and Iloilo had the most significant concentrations of Chinese in the Philippines in the 19th century, hence a Chinese cemetery: http://myphilippinelife.com/iloilo-chinese-cemetery-molo-iloilo-city/

yea! the news article was written by the late great professor funtecha, my history professor during my sophomore year in college. now, that's already from an authoritative source. so much for some people's allegations that the iloilo chinese community is confined to a single street in iloilo.

:okay:

Pasajero Sosyal was originally from Miagao until they expanded to Cabugao Sur, Sta. Barbara. As a teen, I enjoyed watching these handsome Ilonggo jeepneys of REF Motors, Pattoo Wheel, Paragon Star, Indian Serenade, Star Stimulator and Pasajero Sosyal with pride. Di bala daw may transport show man nga ginahiwat showcasing the passads? Pwede ni sya mangin attraction. Only in Iloilo and Proudly Ilonggo. :okay:

Anyway, that's the way they think. It's their perspective. But they should ride one. One of the passad jeepneys in Metro Manila plies the PRC-Pasong Tamo route, and looks like a Patoo type.

Pero I think medyo gahinay-hinay na sila kay considering sang volume sang jeepney sa Iloilo, basi gina regulate na sang LTFRB ang pag issue sang franchises so apektado ang production. Like sa amon sa Miagao, ang application for franchises for both tricycle and jeepney sarado na.

Amu man ang siling sang tag-iya sang Passad sadto. Nagahinay kay tungod sa regulation. Pero padayon guihapon ang paghimu kag ila nga pag-disenyo sang passad. Since there are old jeepneys that may retire soon enough, they just "transfer" the franchise from the old to the brand new.

A Pasajero Sosyal jeepney costs around P200,000 to P500,000--depending on what type. But man, a jeepney with that cost looks like a private car!

It's more fun in Iloilo:
The parish of St. John of Sahagun is known for it’s “Churrigueresque” facade. The exterior of the church, particularly the entrance is decorated with intricate floral carvings as well as cherubs. Two bell towers stood on each side of the church. The structure of the church is made up of yellow limestones. One of the church’s dazzling features are the mosaic art which decorated the interior part of the church. The mosaic art depicts various biblical events such as the expulsion of adam and eve from garden of eden, Jesus christ and his disciples, crucifixion, the resurrection of christ and more.

Ilonggo-Chinese Community welcomes the New Year with a Bang!
Submitted by Mark Segador on January 27, 2012 – 8:51 pmNo Comment

Starting last Monday, a myriad of activities such as exhibits, Masses, and cultural presentations dotted the calendar. Filipino-Chinese schools took turns in sponsoring events both in their campuses and in malls here in Iloilo City. The Iloilo Chinese-Filipino Cultural Association (ICFCA) also opened the Chinese Heritage and Heroism Exhibit at the food court hallway of SM City Iloilo in Mandurriao district. Another event, the Filipino-Chinese Trade Expo held at the activity hall of PNB emphasized the relationship of Iloilo City and China.

Truly, Iloilo City is a melting pot of cultures – from the Ati, the religious, from oriental to the Western.Earlier this afternoon, the culminating event – a grand ethnic and cultural parade had once again gripped the attention of entire Metro Iloilo. The parade was participated by Filipino-Chinese students, faculties, parents, and business leaders.

A grand parade participated by the Filipino-Chinese business and academic community highlighted the weeklong celebration of welcoming the Year of the Water Dragon. The 2012 Chinese New Year officially started last January 23. The city’s celebration of Chinese New Year now on its 10th year is touted as the first and biggest festivity outside of Manila’s Chinatown in Binondo.

The Ilonggo-Chinese community always serves a dynamic and reliable partner of the City Government in providing business and employment opportunities, classroom building activities, feeding programs, anti-dengue prevention campaign, holiday gift-giving to indigents, assistance to peace and order improvement, maintenance of volunteer fire brigades and assistance during disasters and calamities

The Mandurriao side is changing its skyline gradually. I bet in the next three to five years, it'll be different.

Looks like it'll be. :okay:

By the way, daku guid ang bulig sang Circumferential Road sa paguswag sang Metro Iloilo area. From Tagbak to Pavia, it'll only take less than 5-10 minutes, traffic permitting. It'll provide an alternative route to the densely populated Leganes-Jaro corridor for them to pass by Ungka instead of passing by Jaro directly when going to Mandurriao.

With regard to Jaro-Mandurriao, Jaro is quite a concern due to its narrow roads. It may become a bottleneck for those who will be coming from Leganes-Tabuk Suba residential areas if the new CBD went into full force. That maybe the time that BRT services may enter MIGEDC. I wonder if MIGEDC has already considered this option in the next 10-15 years. Also, Jaro's network may need some rerouting.

- Well it's quite surprising nga towns like Pavia, Sta. Barbara and Oton are just mere towns lang but Malls, Business Centers, Township Projects and Tourism Economic Zones are sprouting like giant mushrooms in these areas. Those projects are sometimes sa mga syudad mo lang makita. It's surprising also in a way that kita lang ang ''Metro'' nga wala sang component city nga upod, Puro tanan towns.....:cheers::cheers::cheers:

Can THEY imagine what the new CBD skyline would look like after a couple of years, with the Injap Tower, One Front Tower, Medicus MC, Diversion 21 Hotel, "Marina Tall and Grand" and A _ _ _ a Towers already standing there?

THEY can only be sure of one thing. THEY won't see any 13-storey firewalls there.
