I'm sure Iloilo Doctors, St Pauls and Ilolo Mission are now watching their back for the entry of this tertiary private hospital in the city, making the services more competitive than ever. wecky January 8th, 2007, 09:02 PM All systems-go for Iloilo Provl Liga gab By Florence F. Hibionada Some 5,000 barangay officials from Iloilo's 1,721 barangays are expected as the city hosts on Thursday the 7th Provincial Liga Convention. With Senate President Manny Villar on top of the forthcoming convention guests, confirmation was also reached on the arrival of Senator Richard "Dick" Gordon and Secretary Augusto "Boboy" Syjuco of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). With the theme "Citizen participation and neighborhood collaboration in the local development process, " Board Member Angelo Briones, Provincial Liga Federation President said that among the focus of this year's gab will be on the issues surrounding comprehensive juvenile justice and welfare system. And it's "all systems go" Briones continued with last minute preparations and adjustments taken cared of over the weekend. TESDA Secretary Syjuco will brief and update the liga assembly on the "Ladderized Education," -- the new President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's way. Further still, the barangay officials will have a closer look on the government's insurance scheme in a dialogue set to be led by Josefina Valera, Senior Vice President, General Insurance Group of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) Financial Center. "Every year we take time out and gather together so the liga can be apprised of current government policies, programs and projects that we can bring back to our respective communities. With the massive preparations underway, we are hoping to have a bigger attendance than the previous years," Briones added. -The News Today ______________________ Comment: It's good to know that national bigwigs will grace local gatherings here in Iloilo. Iloilo is a very political-inclined province since then. It became the hotseat of several national and local politicians. I only wish that their presence will further strengthens Iloilo political system and brings better infras and services to the province. IF plans turn out successful, Iloilo City stands to host a $5-million investment from a multi-national call center company. Mayor Jerry Treñas identified this company as TeleTech, which will assess prospective applicants during a two-day jobs fair at SM City on Jan. 20-21. “The jobs fair will be very crucial for the decision-making of TeleTech to pool potential applicants. They will look at the quality of our human resources,” Treñas said even as he encouraged more applicants to try their luck in the jobs fair. The mayor boasted that Ilonggos have a high hiring rate of 50 percent for ePLDT Ventus, the first call center company to open in the metropolis in 2005. “The said percentage is trainable and immediately hirable. Even the President is very proud of our hiring rate.” He added the city’s potential for the booming call center business is higher than the national hiring rate which is three percent. Treñas said TeleTech has already hired Ilonggo workers based in Bacolod and Cebu cities. TeleTech executives met with Treñas last week to discuss the company’s plans of branching out in the city. source: The Guardian ILOILO (http://www.theguardianiloilo.ph/topstories3.php) spacewagon1 January 9th, 2007, 03:27 AM Foreign dignitaries to witness Dinagyang MAYOR Jerry Treñas described Dinagyang as the best avenue to promote Iloilo City here and abroad. “The city has been using the festival as a vehicle to promote Iloilo. We cannot quantify the return on investments but there is a lot of attention given to Iloilo (because of Dinagyang).” The mayor credited the media for the strong publicity given to the city’s premiere celebration which has been recognized as the country’s best tourism event. “In terms of media hype – if we are featured on television, broadsheets and radio – the exposure would be very big. Ultimately, that is what we are trying to achieve – that we continuously promote Iloilo not only for tourism but hopefully for investments (too),” Treñas said. He added several dignitaries and their families are set to grace the Dinagyang highlights on Sunday, Jan. 28. Initially, he counted among the foreign visitors Belgian Ambassador to the Philippines Gregoire Vardakis, US Embassy’s Vice Consul James Greene, Greg Bernstein and cultural affairs officer Bruce Armstrong. Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Oscar Calderon, Department of Finance (DOF) Undersecretary Robert Tan and Petron’s vice-president for legal Atty. Jose Laurel also confirmed their attendance. The United Nations (UN) might also send a delegation to witness Dinagyang. Meanwhile, Treñas said a “Donor’s Forum” will be held during the Dinagyang to present to various funding agencies the city’s priority projects needing financial assistance. Treñas expects representatives for some 50 funding organizations including the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Australian Agency for International Development (AUSAID), Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to attend the forum. “Dinagyang is becoming more popular and we expect more visitors to come.” source: The Guardian ILOILO (http://www.theguardianiloilo.ph/topstories5.php) Dinagyang 2007 cost: P12M THE budget needed to ensure the successful staging of this year’s Dinagyang Festival, Iloilo City’s grandest fiesta, is getting bigger. Mayor Jerry Treñas yesterday said the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) is trying to raise P10 to P12million for the 2007 Dinagyang which, as usual, will be highlighted by the ati-ati tribes contest Jan. 28. Last year IFDI operated on a P10-million budget, thanks to the P8-million sponsorship of telecom giant Smart. This year, however, Smart will only give P2million. Rival Globe will also donate P2million. If plans don’t miscarry, Globe will also distribute 1 million pieces of special edition pre-paid cards embossed with Dinagyang theme to help with its promotion. IDFI executive director Ben Jimena said they expect to receive the sponsorships of the two telecom networks this week. Treñas is optimistic the festival will overcome the budgetary constraints as more donations are pouring in. So far, the IDFI has generated P9million in pledges. “I think even with the reduction of support by Smart, we can cope with our financial obligations.” City Hall, for its part, shelled out P3million for Dinagyang this year. Treñas said the city government shelled out only P1million for Dinagyang last year. To help Dinagyang, the Department of Tourism (DOT) also pledged to extend P1million. “I talked with Secretary Durano and he said the P1-million budget is approved (and) the papers are already in the accounting,” said Treñas. Earlier, Treñas said the United Nations (UN) gave P520,000 for Dinagyang to promote its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which aims to alleviate poverty. Iloilo City Lone District Rep. Raul Gonzalez Jr. earmarked from his pork barrel P500,000 while DOT regional director Edwin Trompeta initially committed P185,000. source: The Guardian ILOILO (http://www.theguardianiloilo.ph/topstories4.php) spacewagon1 January 9th, 2007, 03:44 AM just finished my new blog:banana: www.lingganay.blogspot.com (http://www.lingganay.blogspot.com) its all about iloilo heritage churches, Photos by Chymera gali...:) Bilib gid ako iya sa imo Noy, Pag-abot sa simbahan, una ka gid sa listahan ko. Iloilo has definitely made its mark last presidential election. Pendon Several dignitaries have already confirmed their attendance to see the nationally famous Dinagyang Festival this coming January 26-28, 2007 in Iloilo City. Similarly, there is now a scramble for hotel rooms here as tour packages and visitors vie for the remaining hotel rooms available. Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Trenas said that even with the opening of two new high end hotels here, the rooms are not enough for the guests of Dinagyang. Opened two weeks ago was the Centennial Resort and Convention Center in Jaro district. The newly refurbished Castle Hotel along Bonifacio Drive is set to be opened this month while the Riverside Inn of the newly constructed Times Square along Gen Luna St. is being rushed to accommodate spilled over guests during the festival. Dinagyang Festival, celebrated every fourth week of January, is selected as the Best Tourism Event in the country by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP). Among the early confirmed guests are Philippine National Police Chief Gen Oscar Calderon, Presidential Chief of Staff Secretary Michael Defensor, Ambassador Gregoire Vardakis of Belgium, US Embassy Vice Consul James Greene and Greg Bernstein, Cultural Affairs Officer Bruce Armstrong, Department of Finance Undersecretary Robert Tan, Petron VP for Legal Affairs Atty. Jose Laurel, and delegates of the USAID, UNICEF, USAEP, GTZ, AUSAID, JICA, CIDA and the United Nations Development Programme who will be attending the Donors Forum in Iloilo City on January 24-25, 2007. Trenas also said he was informed that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is going for a state visit to Switzerland and might not be able to go to Iloilo for the Dinagyang Festival but will grace the Kalibo Ati-atihan Festival in Aklan. On the other hand, the festival continue to receive financial assistance from donors and the amount has already reached more than P9 million as of this date. Last year, Dinagyang was able to get more than P10 million to spend for its expenses. This year’s donors include Globe with P2 million, Smart with P2 million, Department of Tourism P1 million, Cong. Raul Gonzalez Jr. P500,000, UNDP P500,000, Iloilo City government P3 million and DOT RD Edwin Trompeta P85,000. Other donors are yet to be collected this month before the start of the festival highlights. http://dailyinformer.info/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=791&Itemid=137 Another sister city in Spain for Iloilo Ilonggos with Spanish relatives or working in Spain will soon realize a sisterhood pact between Iloilo City and Bilbao, Spain. This was announced yesterday by Department of Foreign Affairs Consul Sarah Salcedo, herself an Ilongga from the Municipality of Sara, Iloilo. Salcedo, formerly DFA regional director based in Iloilo City, was in Iloilo City recently to finalize plans for the sister city relationship between the city and Bilbao, Spain where many Filipinos are residing. Salcedo said that Bilbao is a beautiful Spanish city and the city officials there are raring to meet their local counterparts here for a sister city agreement and in exchange of technology, investments and other socio-economic and cultural programs. Iloilo City had notched sisterhood pacts with Stockton, California in the United States, Xing Jiao in the China mainland and Vancouver in Canada. Makati City in Metro Manila is also a sister city. Dinagyang, celebrated every fourth week of January, has been selected as the Best Tourism Event in the country by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP). Among the confirmed guests are Philippine National Police Director General Oscar Calderon, Presidential Chief of Staff Secretary Michael Defensor, Ambassador Gregoire Vardakis of Belgium, US Embassy Vice Consul James Greene and Greg Bernstein, Cultural Affairs Officer Bruce Armstrong, Department of Finance Undersecretary Robert Tan, and Petron Vice President for Legal Affairs lawyer Jose Laurel. Likewise expected are delegates of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), US-Asia Environmental Partnership (USAEP), German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), Australian Agency for International Development (AUSAID), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) who will be attending the Donors Forum in Iloilo City on January 24-25. Mayor Jerry Treñas said he was informed that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will be on a state visit to Switzerland and might not be able to attend the Dinagyang. But she will grace the Kalibo Ati-Atihan Festival in Aklan. Meanwhile, there is now a scramble for hotel rooms here as tour packages and visitors vie for the remaining hotel rooms available. Treñas said even with the opening of two new high-end hotels here, rooms are not enough for the guests. Opened two weeks ago was the Centennial Resort and Convention Center in Jaro district. The newly refurbished Castle Hotel along Bonifacio Drive is set to open this month while the Riverside Inn at the newly constructed Times Square on Gen. Luna Street is being rushed to accommodate spill-over guests during the festival. Dinagyang Festival continues to receive financial assistance from donors and the amount has reached more than P9 million as of this date. Last year, the organizers were able to get more than P10 million. This year's donors include Globe Telecom which gave P2 million; Smart Telecommunications, P2 million; Department of Tourism, P1 million; Cong. Raul Gonzalez Jr., P500,000; UNDP, P500,000; Iloilo City government, P3 million; and Department of Tourism, P85,000. TeleTech executives met with Treñas last week to discuss the company’s plans of branching out in the city. source: The Guardian ILOILO (http://www.theguardianiloilo.ph/topstories3.php) WOW! 30th THREAD!!! This, after Philippine Consul to Spain Sarah Salcedo, who is an Ilonggo, visited Mayor Jerry Treñas at the City Hall Monday to talk about a sisterhood pact. The mayor said that Salcedo has identified Bilbao City to become Iloilo’s sister city. Why Bilbao City? “It is because of their many exchanges between us,” said Treñas. He added Iloilo City’s port at Muelle Loney Street had established historical links with Spain when it became one of leading Philippine ports during Spanish era. Citing a book entitled “Basques in the Philippines,” Treñas said the Port of Iloilo was identified as early as 1855. “When the Port of Iloilo was opened to international trade in 1855, it quickly became a center of Basque commercial activities and immigration,” the book said. Treñas said he might visit Bilbao after the May elections to taste their specialty “chorizo de Bilbao.” If realized, the Bilbao pact would be the seventh sisterhood accord for Iloilo City both domestic and international. Among Iloilo City’s “sister cities” are Makati City, Philippines; Stockton, USA; Honolulu, Hawaii USA; Qing Dao, China; Dedo City, Guam USA; and Guigang City, China. Treñas said the city government can promote the city’s tourism and economic potentials through the sisterhood agreements. source: The Guardian ILOILO (http://www.theguardianiloilo.ph/topstories5.php) Hotels fully booked for Dinagyang 2007 HOTELS in the city are now fully booked for visitors who will grace the Dinagyang Festival though only 90% has so far confirmed their reservations With some guests already arriving, Luis Leocario, head of committee on reception of the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI), said yesterday they have been busy welcoming and billeting the guests. Leocario, who is also the president of Association of Iloilo Tour Operators (AITO), said they expect all reservations to be confirmed in the coming days. As a new IDFI member, Leocario said the AITO serves as the welcome committee. Leocario said they have 48 tour member-agencies with transport services waiting for the arrival of City Hall-invited guests at the airport and seaport and to accompany them to their respective accommodations. However, Leocario said that the city’s existing hotel rooms cannot accommodate all the booking requests of visitors who want to witness the grand celebration. “We have not yet offered the pension houses because tourists might not find these comfortable.” He said he turned down the proposed hotel reservations of at least 15 foreigners because “there are no more available (hotel) rooms.” He explained their request for reservations came in late. “We started to receive bookings in September through a Travel Mart but the responses were always inquiries and were not definite thinking that they could still get a hotel room in December. But the late requests did not make it,” Leocario said. Leocario said they also offer standard packages to tourists which include panoramic, adventure in Guimaras Island and culinary and museum tours in the city. The AITO, which is also a member of Iloilo Convention and Visitors Bureau (ICVB), is positioning Iloilo as convention hub. AITO has 15 DOT-accredited tour guides. They also tap tourism students to lead visitors in going around local attractions. source: The Guardian ILOILO (http://www.theguardianiloilo.ph/topstories6.php) spacewagon1 January 10th, 2007, 07:00 AM Uncovering Lambunao through Binanog Festival By Bombette G. Marin TO greet the new year, a promising festival will open to enthrall visitors with a lasting impression of the rich history, legacy and culture of the people of Lambunao. The Binanog Festival highlights the town's most highly developed art---its binanog dance, an integral part of the customs and traditions of the Bukidnons in Lambunao. It depicts the coupling mechanism of banog birds (dapay or hawk) to the symbolic beating of a gong that synchronizes the pulsating movements of the feet and hands of the dancers and reaches its climax as the female dancer catches her male counterpart with the use of her handkerchief. The dance may be either in a form of a celebration known as the Inagong Sayaw-Sayaw or Dinagmay, a courtship dance. The municipality often described as a premier for natural destination in the province is celebrating its 5th Binanog Festival. The Binanog Festival of Lambunao has spread its influence to greater heights, attracting more visitors with its neighboring provinces. It is a major tourism attraction in the province, rich in cultural heritage. Celebrated annually, the weeklong festivity started in Jan. 8, 2007 with an Opening Salvo alongside the Agro-Industrial Fair and Food Festival. The festival culminates with the tribe competition. Witness Binanog Festival in Lambunao, a town rich on various attractions of all kinds. A 48-kilometer or an hour leisure trip by either van or bus from the city then one can further enhance the experience of being one with nature, filling his eyes with magnificent views of verdant landscape teeming with life. Lambunao's natural character is located northwest from Iloilo City. Home to 61,084 (2000 Census on Population) people, the town is bounded in the north by Calinog; Duenas and Pototan in the east; in the south by Janiuay and Badiangan; and a portion of Janiuay and Valderama of Antique in the west. Its 73 barangays live peacefully in its 40,709-hectare land area. It's amazing how much Lambunaonons care for Mother Nature. Located at the West Visayas State University College of Agriculture and Forestry in Barangay Jayubo is the Mari-it Conservation Park, a Rescue and Captive Breeding Center for exotic birds like Dolongan and Tarictic Hornbill, White-spotted Deer, Warty Pigs, Racquet-tail Parrot (Dangag or native pikoy) and other species in the brink of extinction. Another plus factor about this place is its close proximity to Inas, Montillano and Aguas Falls, three of the more popular and accessible falls for first-time or visiting tourists. Boasting of lush greens and majestic trees, the area around these falls provide refuge to various floras endemic to the area or hear birds singing an ode to Mother Nature, making it an ideal camping site for those who like to commune with nature. One of Lambunao's stable and growing industry is its lakatan. Much of the best produce is grown in Pupanta Arc situated in Barangay Pughanan, an area that boasts of two freshwater springs over its lush vegetation that offer visitors an exciting outdoor adventure where they can go rock climbing, fishing and bird-watching. As tourism initiatives in Lambunao strive for ecological progress and industry leadership, a wide variety of programs and projects are expected to strengthen the town's overall appeal to its many visitors. Under the leadership of Mayor Ignacio L. Ramirez Jr. these programs and projects are backed-up by supportive and peace-loving people and are assured to shape the present and will continue to shape the future landscape of tourism promotion not only for the town itself, but for the province of Iloilo in a globalized world. source: Sunstar ILOILO (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ilo/2007/01/10/feat/uncovering.lambunao.through.binanog.festival.html) whyte January 10th, 2007, 07:24 AM http://farm1.static.flickr.com/139/330986330_f3f4c94993.jpg Wecky, cguro this is the Riverside Inn that was mentioned in the news that you posted, Kay guin mention nga ang Location is in Gen. Tani lang.:) wecky January 11th, 2007, 04:31 AM Malaysian firm to join Dinagyang trade fair DINAGYANG Festival is becoming an avenue for product promotions – even the imported ones. Engr. Ely Bagtasus, chair of kiosk committee of the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) yesterday said a Malaysian firm wants to display its products during the Dinagyang highlights Jan. 26-28. Bagtasus said the company will promote vitamins and energy drinks to the revelers during the merry-making. The city’s grandest fiesta usually spurs businesses in the metropolis – from the small vendors to giant companies selling their merchandise to people who flock the “best tourism festival” in the country. Bagtasus added that a Nueva Ecija-based trading company also plans to showcase 16 products. Likewise, Bagtasus said Manila-based bread maker Gardenia committed to rent 15 kiosks. “They will utilize two kiosks and give out the remaining 13 to vendors for free. We have encouraged the vendors and companies to sell their products for livelihood as well as establish links with local entrepreneurs,” said Bagtasus. He said the kiosks will be positioned in strategic places in downtown area where the crowd converges to watch and join the Dinagyang revelry. Bagtasus said bottling companies have pledged to donate several kiosks including Coca-Cola (P180,000), San Miguel (P200,000), Pepsi (P180,000) and Beer na Beer (P200,000). These firms did the same scheme as part of their promotional project. But the kiosks should only sell beer and softdrinks in can or plastic bottles and they are strictly prohibited from serving liquors to minors. Bagtasus said they have been accepting vendor applicants November last who want to use the 512 kiosks, 75 percent of which were already sold out. Some 15 percent of the kiosks made down payments but Bagtasus said the lessees should pay their rents before the Jan. 15 deadline of their reservations will be given to other interested vendors. The 2.5m x 3m kiosk can be rented for P960 for the three-day festival highlight. Interested lessees may contact 338-0982 or visit Phi-Beta Enterprises along Ledesma Street. Bagtasus said the vendors will be provided with free electrical lines and light bulbs while 15 electricians will maintain the lines. If they use appliances, the lessees should pay an additional P100 per day for freezers and refrigerators and P25 daily for karaoke, television sets, water dispensers and electric fans. Bagtasus said the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) also wants to collect P200 privilege tax from each vendor. The staging of concerts requires the organizer to pay P3,000. Bagtasus said they will install some 17 portable toilets costing P4,500 each for sanitation purposes. He added they shelled out P22,000 for electric bills last year while 20 percent of the profit went to garbage collection fees. Bagtasus said the kiosk committee remitted P370,000 net profit to the IDFI last year. -The Guardian Iloilo ____________ Comment: I hope to see more international and national companies joining trade fair during Dinagyang Festival in the years to come. GoodSuccess January 11th, 2007, 04:58 AM It would seem investments in ILOILO city are still too small.Wonder what the LOPEZES are doing? wecky January 11th, 2007, 05:07 AM You're right @GoodSuccess. Commerical investments in Iloilo are not that big yet but are increasing in numbers. The city is starting to be filled up and it's just good to know that we are improving and developing. With regards to Lopezes, we have no idea at all. Besides, there's only a handful of Lopez-owned companies in Iloilo City. Most of their businesses are located in Manila right now. The only Lopez family who runs business ventures in the province is that of Albertito. By the way, welcome to Iloilo Thread. GoodSuccess January 11th, 2007, 05:15 AM The Lopezes should invest in iloilo. They are the big boys in the Phils. They owe everything to Iloilo. They should return back the favor....I hope everybody get my point here.To spur Iloilo's economy we need investors like the Lopezes...Got my point? wecky January 11th, 2007, 05:22 AM Hopefully they will. But it is not only Lopezes that we need to increase Iloilo's commercialism. We need a lot of investors to speed up economic success though you're right to say that it is much better if Lopezes should invest in Iloilo since its where they come from. But it all depends on their company. Consumers dictate investment and so our local government. We could not force one to open a business when it is not neccessary or not within their speciality. GoodSuccess January 11th, 2007, 05:43 AM I agree with you that we need all investors in Ilolio. But these investors will not be interested if they cant see any big investment being put up in ILOILO.IMO,the Lopezes should start the ball rolling in iloilo. If they could put up ABS/CBN,POWER PLANT MALL,MAYNILAD,MERALCO,what else?I mean they can use their think tank to set up appropriate businesses in our province. Why not a food industry or Tourism industry type of businesses. I have one food project in my mind which the PROC will be very interested in.The project is in the final stages of production reseach by a very big vehicle production company based in JAPAN.In fact China and japan are jointly undertaking the research on this BIGTIME busineess venture.I am sure they are looking for PHIL.partners, because the main engredient can be easily grown in the agricultural soils of the Phils. This is bigtime cos 3BILLION chinese will be the ready market. The finished product will be a regular staple in the chinese dinner table. I am quite sure the Lopezes are aware of this project. Why not go for this project and implement in the island of PANAY? NTB January 11th, 2007, 06:06 AM all the good efforts from our local officials, employees, NGOs and all Ilonggos are bearing fruits na gid man. @NTB, ano ang thrust sang provincial capitol iya when it comes to tourism? And you're right to say, too, that they can hire think tank to make a right project for their home province. Anyway, sa diin ka subong naka-base? METROPOLITAN_ILOILO January 11th, 2007, 07:15 AM It would seem investments in ILOILO city are still too small.Wonder what the LOPEZES are doing? I have been making guesses as well about this for a long time. I mean I've been throwing questions about this as well in the Dinagyang Forum. Lopezes origin is ILOILO (Eugenio Lopez etc )yet they have few investments here compared to other places. The active Lopez is only Albertito... his son Tito Jr, (TICEL Corp. etc etc) have few investments so far considering that ILOILO is the Land of MEDIA Giants like (BOMBO RADYO/STAR FM of Florete and of course ABSCBN of the Lopezes) with this alone ILOILO should have great Media mileage but it seems that its not the case. What I always notice is that it is in GMA 7 that Iloilo got more media mileage and the Irony is that in ILOILO, GMA is the #1 Tv station which is actually the place of the Lopezes. I could simply conclude in this scenario that since the Lopezes abandoned the ILONGGO Populace the Ilonggos abandoned them as well... (IMHO). I actually LAuded the Chan Family (Jose Marie Chan hails from Molo) though they have relocated their business in Cebu they actually invested il ILOILO thru the MOST MODERN Sugar Mill in the country today: the P2B Central Azucarera de San Antonio in the boundary of Passi and Duenas. The only visible contribution as well was the SOLAR ENERGY from Mr. Puckett (Lopez) and the Bantay Bata 163 (1st outside MM) as part of the service in ILOILO by the Lopezes and of cousre before the DOn Benito Hospital (now WVSUMC)... aside from that nothing more in terms of big investment like the Uygongcos (amigo Terrace Hotel, Gen. Milling in Lapuz etc.) I could say mayo pa mga Intsik they have more investments so far...plus of course the University of ILOILO by the Lopezes (which was rumored before that they're planning to sell at P1B to FEU which would become FEU ILOILO including the big campus in Ungka) With the wealth of the Lopezes they could actually invest in the power sector in ILOILO to challenge the monopoly of PECO...just a wishful thinking though... (currently our power rates in the city is higher than Manila and Cebu thats is the leading factor why call centers are shying away from ILOILO due to high cost of electricity though we have dynamic and many qualified manpower here) Just MHO. :) spacewagon1 January 11th, 2007, 07:23 AM Iloilo City has a new logo By Lydia C. Pendon The city’s slug line “Iloilo City: the next big thing!” will soon carry a new logo that depicts the economic development strides of a highly urbanized city in the Visayas. Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Trenas said the new official logo will be incorporated in all official correspondence and documents of the city government. The winning logo was submitted by contestant “Dondon” and will win for the author P5,000 from the Iloilo Foundation of Information Technology (IFIT). The logo was dubbed “Cuadro” which comes from the Spanish word that means frame-plan, assemble or model. Big Buildings are letters “I” and “L” in word Iloilo. It signifies a progressive city with limitless capacity to become big and famous as the next Queen City of the South. The Rising Sun is the third letter and the first “O” in the word Iloilo. It signifies a bright future of the city and a guiding light to every Ilonggos. Its great rays spread proudly, bringing a great message that Iloilo has the best Tourism Event in the Country. Ati Warrior is the last letter “O” in word Iloilo that signifies the Dinagyang Festival, as the Best Tourism Event in the Country that makes the city well-known locally and internationally. The Nose Shape under the buildings signifies the Iloilo River that connects Ilonggos through its bridges and ports. The Blue and Red Color at the bottom signifies a ribbon that binds Ilonggos for one cause. The Human Shape at the bottom signifies the Ilonggos helping together to make Iloilo City: the next Big Thing! source; Daily Informer (http://dailyinformer.info/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=802&Itemid=137) spacewagon1 January 11th, 2007, 07:28 AM DOT looks forward to more challenges in 2007 The Department of Tourism (DOT) in Western Visayas is looking forward to more challenges this 2007 posed not only against the tourism industry but also against the country's booming economy. "Definitely with the tourism industry, we are looking at it very brightly and optimistically," DOT Regional Director Edwin Trompeta said. Trompeta cited the advantages to be drawn from the opening of two new airports of international standard in Silay, Negros Occidental and Iloilo. The two airports are slated to commence operation middle of this year. Trompeta said the two airports could help them move to another level of tourism promotion such as organizing direct charter flights to Iloilo and Silay. "This will be the beginning of establishing these two destinations as international destinations by way of direct flights," he explained. Likewise, he said the upbeat economy would mean employment as well as added and disposable income. The disposable income, he said, would translate to travel and tourism. Furthermore, the stable economy worldwide is very favorable to tourism. At present, he said, there has been an unprecedented growth in the "tourist outbound traffic" in China while North America has registered more than eight percent increase in tourism in 2006. "We are hoping that with the new program that is focused on East Asia and the new program for North America, we would be able to sustain the growth that we have experienced in 2006," he said. The regional director also cited the relative peace and order situation as one of the causes for the positive growth of the tourism industry. "These are all signs for tourism and for the economy especially for the Philippines. The only fly in the ointment, if I may say so, would be the coming elections because if it will prove to be tainted with violence or politically related incidents that might catch the attention of our tourists, then it would not be good for us," he pointed out. IT depends on electricity that is reliable. Its driving any potential investor away because of this UNREASONABLE EXPENSIVE POWER RATE. Gees! I hate PECO! ILECO na lang ta! :D Wow! I hope Mr. Bombette Marin would indeed register here in SSC and become a regular forumer. We really need incumbent government officials in our threads so that we can have straightforward answers about our queries regarding Iloilo's development. Kon kis-a abi, chismis lang nabasahan o nabatian ta without any confirmation of its veracity. It's a job for NTB! Kinahanglan maganyat mo guid si Mr. Marin. We can invite him as well so that he knows not just of the opinions and the latest news and developments from fellow Kasimanwas but also can get ideas from other places and benchmark Iloilo from the others (benchmark is constructive comparing, not destructive as others did here before in SSC) as well. So that we can improve more on marketing Iloilo through tourism. Thank you for the welcome. The girl in my avatar is my daugther.sHE IS 5'8" tall and she is a model.:) Where is she? She's cute. :) If you guarantee that big businessmen in iloilo are browsing here,i would be glad to share my ideas here.Modesty aside ,i was an eyewitness and got involved in the CEBOOM phenomenom.I was the special assistant to the jap managing director of the biggest electronics company in the PHILS.We put up the cebu factory and we employed 26,000 workers during my time. Now it is an institution. It was reffered to as "the miracle of Cebu". IMPRESARIO January 12th, 2007, 10:35 PM ‘Sell’ WV airports now – Gordon By DAVID ISRAEL SINAY ILOILO City – The government should start promoting the two airports of international standards in Western Visayas even before they fully operate to catch investors’ interest and to boost the tourism potentials of the region, a senator said.... “Even if you have an international airport and you do not have the hotels, kakalimutan kayo (they will forget you),” Gordon also stressed in a press conference at Tatoy’s Manokan in Arevalo district here. He said that once the airports in Silay City and the New Iloilo Airport opens, hotel rooms will be a necessity. Gordon stressed that Iloilo City, being the center of commerce in Western Visayas, must address the need. AIRPORTS Iloilo Gov. Niel Tupas Sr. disclosed Friday that the New Iloilo Airport straddling the municipal boundaries of Cabatuan and Sta. Barbara towns here is 98 percent finished. The P6.1-billion New Iloilo Airport, which sits on a 188-hectare airport complex, aims to meet the increasing air passenger and cargo traffic in Iloilo and as well boost economic development in the region. On January 26, 2007, Tupas said a test flight shall be conducted to assess operation of aviation facilities prior its full operation in April this year. Former Senate President Franklin Drilon and Transportation and Communications Secretary Leandro Mendoza will come over for the test flight, Tupas said. Also, the P4.5-billion new Silay City Airport is expected to be operational by the middle of the year despite the delays in construction due to rebel attacks made at the construction site in October last year. Reports said about 50 suspected members of the New People’s Army blew up P30-million worth of construction equipment including a computerized batching plant and paving equipment owned by Hanjin International of South Korea, and a power generator by Takenaka-Itochu of Japan. The two airports are financed under the Yen Loan Package of the Japan Bank of International Cooperation. LACK OF HOTELS In the past years, one of the problems the City of Iloilo encountered with the influx of foreign and local tourists is the billeting accommodation capacity of hotel rooms and lodging houses. Foreign and local tourists flock the region’s center of commerce, especially during annual festivities like the Dinagyang Festival. This, Mayor Jerry Treñas said despite “most of the local tourists coming over for the festival have friends and relatives to stay here (to accommodate them not in hotels and lodging houses). Being short of hotel rooms, Treñas said some of the tourists tend to stay in the nearby island province of Guimaras. A 30-minute ride on a ferry would bring tourists to the City of Iloilo. Also, “some stay in Bacolod City and just ferry during the highlights of the activity,” he added. However, Treñas is confident that the lack of hotel rooms is no obstacle for local and foreign tourists to enjoy, see and experience the Dinagyang festivities. During this occasion, the city government is encouraging some shipping lines to operate floating hotels during the arrival of tourists, particularly on occasions as big as the Dinagyang Festival. “Hopefully, these demands would encourage entrepreneurs to put up more structures needed for the visitors,” he said. For 2007, Treñas said there will be several hotel establishments to open this month anticipating the famous festival celebration. link: http://www.panaynews.com.ph/news2.htm GoodSuccess January 13th, 2007, 06:12 AM Originally Posted by GoodSuccess If you guarantee that big businessmen in iloilo are browsing here,i would be glad to share my ideas here.Modesty aside ,i was an eyewitness and got involved in the CEBOOM phenomenom.I was the special assistant to the jap managing director of the biggest electronics company in the PHILS.We put up the cebu factory and we employed 26,000 workers during my time. Now it is an institution. It was reffered to as "the miracle of Cebu". The terrain of Cebu province is basically 70% mountainous. The soil or land use is not suited for Agriculture. The CEBUANOS before are not self realiant as far as basic food is concerned, which is rice.So the cebuanos planted corn which is suitable to plant in their mountainous terrains.Again their shorelines are not bountiful of fishes and other basic seafood products. They cannot build fishponds cos the nature of their shorelines are not siuted for growing bangus or other seafoods.Their beaches are sandy, wala lutak.. The odds in life are better for ILONGGOS compared to Cebuanos. And so this situatuion challenged the Cebuanos to strive harder in order to survive or live a rather comfortable life. They tried to discover themselves and dug deeper into their talents so as they could earn a decent living.Soon the inate talent of the cebuanos emerge from within their aspirations to survive hunger. They dont have fertile lands to till,so they tilled their brains to become respected designers of handicrafts and skillful ,disciplined workers. The rest is history... On the other hand,we ilonggos still pride on our vast ricelands and haciendas and always saying "we dont need to work in factories, because we wont go hungry anyway."We continue to believe that we are the masters of the Visayan islands and never took efforts in catching up with the worldwide trends.Look at the beaches in CEBU now,can you say that a one hectare of fishpond will earn more than a one hectare of beach resort? Classic illustration? It is not too late my dear brothers, let us all wake up and work together.I am not saying we aspire to put up export factories in PANAY.That is not my vision. We should continue to work on our original advantage. The vast fertile ,plain agricultural land of Iloilo. We take away our haciendero, senorito, will never go hungry psyche. That gina piko gina pala myth should be buried.Let us remove our foolish pride and accept reality that we are left behind by our neighbor province. I have a unique development concept suited to the innate resources of iloilo.I can give hints here if i am requested to do so.The direction is not the same as CEBU"S.This is a concept for ILOILO alone. btw my kid ika is in CEBU now.:) GoodSuccess January 13th, 2007, 06:26 AM ‘Sell’ WV airports now – Gordon By DAVID ISRAEL SINAY ILOILO City – The government should start promoting the two airports of international standards in Western Visayas even before they fully operate to catch investors’ interest and to boost the tourism potentials of the region, a senator said.... “Even if you have an international airport and you do not have the hotels, kakalimutan kayo (they will forget you),” Gordon also stressed in a press conference at Tatoy’s Manokan in Arevalo district here. The concern today is promotion, adequate support from the local gov't, and infrastructure (which the airport will help address but the real problem is in Iloilo's Road Infra) As you said the real problem is the road system, then why not just expand and improve first the existing airport and allocate the funds to make good roads.I cant imagine how they could pay up the loan on a airport without international traffic coming in.Iloilo has still has no big industry to show at this time.I wonder what type of businessmen will invest here in the next 5 years. Of course the JICA has undertaken a study re the feasibility of the airport. In my experience the ODA will extend loan to benefeciaries if the area has some japanese investors presently located in the area or these japanese investors has a business plan in our province.I dont know about this, but i hope there is a business plan that is easily implementable.Otherwise i would think the airport was built for some peoples benefit. Rivers/creeks line the northern and southern tip of the runway which is only 2.1km long. The new airport has a 2.5km runway with plenty of room to expand. Also, buildings around the city are limited only to a certain height because ATO standards cannot allow tall buildings near airports. Taller buildings in the city will be more possible in the near and far future once the Mandurriao airport is gone. I hope (and believe) that this airport will be the reason why more industries and businesses will be brought to Iloilo. This is just a clarification. We are. Because to be honest, that airport will serve as a catalyst (hopefully) for the progress of Iloilo just like what happened in 1855 when the seaport was opened to international trade. As what I've read earlier in local dailies, the money that will be generated in selling the old airport to potential private investors will be paying the loan as what the President wants it to be. There are already potential investors who are already showing interest (some others only waiting for a "go" signal from the local gov't) in buying the airport lot. IMO, Iloilo NEEDS a new airport. Iloilo may not be touristy but the passenger & aviation traffic are increasing and the old airport is in a sorry state and cannot be expanded no more. Infrastructure is needed in order for a place to progress. It is a plus factor. For me, it was never a waste of money. @Good Success. May we request you give us hints regarding tapping the innate potential that Iloilo has? Manpower is one of them I think. Also attitude-wise I think? Like "Ang Kwarta Ginapiko Ginapala" thing? I hope (and believe) that this airport will be the reason why more industries and businesses will be brought to Iloilo. very well said, IAMME!!! @goodsuccess let's just look at these things positively, the old airport is quite obsolete. We need alot of good and modern facilities. sa transportation naman naton, it's a must to improve our existing streets(highways or not) since we don't have much of them and they are not that wide to occupy the city's growing traffic. The new Iloilo airport which is out of the city will also boost Pavia and Sta. barbara's economy, It will also boost Iloilo province tourism industry since it covers more area compared to the older which is only situated in the city, what I mean is that, more interesting places wether from the province or the city will be promoted. The airport may also absorb iloilo's unemployed graduates... electricity(power)-problem is a major hindrance which blocks Iloilo's economy from improving. I think they should make this as one of their major priorities. On tourism, I have chatted with someone who works under DOT, she said, Iloilo has a lot of tourist destination, however our tourist facilities are not that competent. Like for example, waterfalls, virgin islands and other natural tourist destination doesn't have comfort rooms, inns to stay or camp sites(in spite of this, installing such facilities would ruin our natural destinations' virginal appeal... I hope ma-resolve na ina ang bickering dira sa aton sa Iloilo, NTB. I just called Iloilo today. Though medyo magamo ang capitol, the city and the province remains very peaceful. Daw wala man gihapon nagbag-o. It's ironic that the governor we voted to serve our province was dismissed wihtout given due process. I hope justice will reign in our country. spacewagon1 January 16th, 2007, 07:08 AM Fil-Estate says it will spend P2.5B this year Fil-Estate, claiming to be now debt-free, said it would also complete this year its condotels at the Fairways and Blue Waters resort on Boracay Island and was planning to develop a second hotel in the Camp John Hay leisure estate in the northern city of Baguio. In the central Philippines province of Iloilo, it plans to build a residential and golf estate in Santa Barbara town, the company said. The company said its board had approved a plan to raise its authorized capital to P5.0 billion from P2.8 billion. sans politics in our provincial capitol, Iloilo is definitely awakening. And it's nice to be part of Iloilo City and Iloilo Province's success. I hope we'll continue our help in promoting our home province especially here abroad. I want to post sang gin-forward nga PM ni Kirby and Wecky. Gian, thank you so much sa imo. A week from now, the world will witness Dinagyang Festival. Ara na siya sa TFC by ABS-CBN. And almost all malls in the city may ara nga mga activities for Dinagyang. spacewagon1 January 16th, 2007, 07:20 AM 20 Dinagyang tribes this year ILOILO City -- The Dinagyang Foundation capitulated to the request of the Association of Tribes of Iloilo (ATI) to allow the 20 listed Ati-atihan tribes without any reduction to perform this year's edition of the Dinagyang Ati-atihan competition. Dinagyang executive director Ben Jimena said the foundation executive committee and Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas approved the participation of all 20 tribes in deference to an early decision to reduce the number to only 15 tribes. ATI president Carlos Ebro Jr. said it is already very late to disturb the dancing choreography of the top 15 tribes to absorb the warriors of five eliminated tribes. Furthermore, the 20 tribes have already received their financial subsidy from the foundation and spent the money for their uniforms, snacks and transport allowance, he added. Additional financial subsidy of P20,000 will be given to each Dinagyang tribe next week. Jimena said, however, the ATI is also amenable to the suggestion of reduction by 2008 staging of Dinagyang Festival should the last five tribes fall below the performance criteria. source: Panay News (www.panaynews.com.ph) whyte January 16th, 2007, 09:35 AM Defiant Iloilo gov says politics behind ouster move A defiant Iloilo Gov. Niel Tupas Sr on Tuesday said that the dismissal order issued by the Office of the Ombudsman against him was a politically-motivated attempt to convince him to switch loyalties to the administration of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. Tupas, in an interview aired over QTV’s Balitanghali news program, claimed his dismissal could be Malacanang’s “revenge" for his refusal to abandon Sen. Franklin Drilon, under whose Liberal Party wing the governor is allied. “I am a victim of politics. I am paying my political dues for backing Sen. Franklin Drilon when he called for the resignation of President Arroyo in 2005," he said in Filipino. Drilon’s LP wing joined former President Corazon Aquino, members of the political opposition and other critics of the Arroyo administration on July 8, 2005 in calling for the resignation of President Arroyo following allegations that the 2004 presidential elections were rigged in favor of the administration. The allegations were based on a taped telephone conversation where the President supposedly tried to get an assurance from a male person - widely believed to be former elections commissioner Virgilio Garcillano - that she would win by a million votes in Mindanao for the 2004 presidential race. Drilon and his allies in the LP have been at odds with the Arroyo administration since then MORE http://www.gmanews.tv/story/27046/Defiant-Iloilo-gov-says-politics-behind-ouster-move habagatcentral1 January 16th, 2007, 09:40 AM hay ambot.. na intra na naman sa listahang suspension/dismissal carnical party. tsk tsk this is definitely bad for iloilo... honestly, daw wala na ko gani tani gana mag pa iloilo, its just that, i have already made commtiments for some people, kag nangin tradisyon ko na ang mag pa dinagyang every year.. i just hope that these smoke clears up before dinagyang. Right now, we have 2 governors (one has taken oath, the other one who refused to leave the Capitol). Former is Armada and the latter is Tupas. Same thing that happened in Cavite a few months ago. Janiuays' most important industry is the production of its chief crop---banana, commercially valuable not only because of its fruit and foliage, also its fiber---Lanot, extracted from the stalk of a banana plant, is the town's identified OTOP (One Town One Product). The potential role of lanot as a major instrument for socio-economic development of the municipality of Janiuay cannot be overemphasized. They are also expecting Manila Mayor Lito Atienza and other officials of the government. The golf tournament is only one of the activities designed to give further color to the Dinagyang festival. There are other sports competitions which the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation and the city government have formulated. Nava described the tournament as a major and international golfing event. He said they are expecting players from Australia, United States, Japan, Korea, Germany, New Zealand, Guam and also from Europe. Members of the Society of 1907, an oldest golf playing club formed in the United Kingdom. From local event, this become s an international event. Currently, there are already 220 participants who have registered for the tournament. They are expecting some 600-800 participants. He said they want the golf tournament to start on January 22 as there is no other golf course in the city or province where the players can play. The Sta. Barbara Golf Course can only accommodate 150 players. After the tournament, there will be a grandiose awarding ceremony at the Nelly's Garden. The final count of 20 tribes will be traversing the dinagyang parade route. Mr Ben Jimena of the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. Definitely, the parade will be a sign of things to come. Mr Jimena further stated that the tribes for Kasadyahan competition increased to 9 tribes from 7. Marin http://www.theguardianiloilo.ph/tourism/photo/tourism2.jpg Festivals bring people together and in the Philippine society, they play an important part as it celebrates something important in the life of the community. Normal life is suspended and the daily worries are forgotten for as long as the festival lasts. The festival tradition of DINAGYANG started when the replica of the image of Sto. Nino (child Jesus) of Cebu was brought to Iloilo City in 1968. Headed by Fr. Sulpicio Ebderes, OSA, together with the delegation from the Cofradia Del Sto. Nino in Cebu , the image, up to this day, is enshrined at the San Jose Parish church. Formerly called Iloilo Ati-atihan in 1969, the term Dinagyang was launched as the official festival name in 1977 by the late Mr. Pacifico Sudario, a writer and radio broadcaster. Dinagyang, coined from the Hiligaynon word “dagyang” or “to make merry,” is celebrated every last weekend of January. It is a grand presentation that features colorful costumes with huge props, accompanied by the pulsating rhythm of the drums where soot-painted dancers or warriors parade in a more lavish and choreographed steps that capture the spirit of the festival. It is Iloilo’s own way of thanking Sto. Niño for the many blessings He has showered to the Ilonggo populace. Evidently, the Hala-Bira tradition in Iloilo originates from Kalibos’ Ati-atihan where the beating of the drums is tied together with the festival tradition of a group of dancers or performers parading and moving in different formations through the streets. With costumes incorporating natural objects together such as fabrics, shells, beads to create the dancers’ headdress and costume. Each object and combination of objects were to represent a certain idea or spiritual force. http://www.theguardianiloilo.ph/tourism/photo/tourism3.jpg The Dinagyang music is a rich network of musical tradition that has developed all through the years. It has certain distinctive traits where it uses repetition as an organizing principle. There are many different modes of expression in the Dinagyang music. Normally, drum ensembles play interlocking patterns during the duration of the dance performances. Each drummer uses a special method of striking the drumhead to produce varying pitches and timbres. Others incorporate rattles and an iron bell, which is struck with a stick to produce a repeated pattern. The Dinagyang beat is distinctive and an infectious sound. And in the recent years, the beat is rapidly inspiring audiences with its unique mixture of Brazilian beat and funky Latin dance groves. From the blissful rhythms to hip-hop riffs, tunes are playful, vital and energetic: they make one dance. It is intimate and exuberant. Alongside the beating of the drums is the Dinagyang dance, varied in style and function. The dancing steps play a crucial role in the competition. Common dance patterns include team dances using formalized patterns, such as straight lines or circular formations; group dances that allow individuals to emerge and display their skills; and solo dances, often performed by a powerful individual or the most professional in the group. Bodily postures vary from the upright stance; to the earth-oriented movements, performing intricate foot and hand movements. Normally, dancers hold either a spear or a shield and the image of Sr. Sto Niño. The Dinagyang dance has also been affected by social change. Nowadays, frequently relying on symbolic gestures and magnificent costumes, dances often narrate stories based on mythology, historical events, and legends, with performances lasting for not less than seven minutes and not exceeding 10 minutes. The rich colors of their costumes complements every skin tone. The flawless moves provide a discreet sparkle in the eyes of every dancer. Yet it is in the festive spirit of every performer that Dinagyang comes alive. Come and witness Dinagyang Festival 2007 with 20 of the best tribes the Dinagyang Festival has ever-produced in its 39 years of existence in Iloilo on January 28, quietly attracting the world’s eyes with its power performances. http://www.theguardianiloilo.ph/tourism/photo/tourism1.jpg Source : http://www.theguardianiloilo.ph/tourism.php NTB January 19th, 2007, 10:23 AM Yes,it was brutal indeed!Mabait pa nga ang mga military eh.No gunshots heard and no casualties.Dapat ni ratrat na nila yon.Ikaw ba naman postingan sang NPA kag mga EX convicts from the provincial jail, what would you do?Do you expect the military to bring birthday cakes at the capitol building?Do you think the military will act that way without justification?Common guys...:ohno: This is clearly a showcase of GREED OF POWER!If you think otherwise,so be it.But i will never surrender my ilonggo intellect to this power greedy dramatic family fuedalist. You can pity them cause they were dehumanized in a way,but i think they were asking for that reception. This governor thinks he owns the provincial capitol and continue to insists on his claim because of you.....blind and deaf believers.:bash: Saan ka ba galing? First you are asking where i come from? What do you mean by that? Its a broad question...Well i will be assuming now.I think you are asking whether i am somebody..To answer you directly...I am a nobody who takes pride in paying my taxes dilligently...Thats it,no more no less. Second,Again we go back to the spelling of your FAMOUS FAMILY NAME....TUPAS....Inday why are you so concened about this matter? Are you going to become sick if i spelled it wrongly? In my mind now is,your family is in dreamland of having grandious thoughts about how your family is situated above the rest. Are you thinking you are God,that it is a sin to misspell your family name? I could build my dream fish cages there too. shyaman January 21st, 2007, 05:21 AM I doubt those pictures are Sicogon's. The bird's eye view of the resort is too grand for Sicogon of the 70's or 80's. The palm trees on the village and plaza scene is not tropical enough to be part of Sicogon. Could it be that this is a Japanese company's vision of Sicogon back then? They could have collated several pictures of resorts from other parts of the world to make a good presentation of a Sicogon resort and community that they are planning to put up. When I was still in elementary, I used to have a collection of Philippine post cards. One of them is Sicogon. It's a beach scene, dubbed as golden sand (not white), with several resort cottages made of native materials. Very similar to Boracay's resorts in the 80's.
