Parianon2 May 9th, 2012, 03:19 PM 40-storey building to spur 'new' Iloilo sans traffic and flood
Iloilo City with its rising new Central Business District in Mandurriao is teeming with great potentials in terms of real estate developments, globally renowned urban planners affirmed.
"We are honored to be given an opportunity to develop this promising city. Hopefully (we could start) next year, if not last quarter of this year," stressed Makati-based T. I. Vasquez Architects & Planners Inc. (TVA&P).
The ambitious Manhattan-like 15-hectare Gaisano Iloilo Center project in West Diversion Road, Brgy. San Rafael, Mandurriao, is envisioned as a mixed-use development of commercial, residential units and offices by mall chain Gaisano Capital and its property developer arm GoldPeach Properties.
It will be closely similar to Metro Manila's Eastwood, Rockwell, Greenbelt or Filinvest Alabang. "Ample open spaces, outdoor dining (facilities and amenities) and tree-lined streets are of top priority."
The hotel tower is projected to be around 40 floors. "The builds are only to show building yield, these are not final design. Still in the oven so to speak, but investors interested to buy lots are already in the table," TVA&P said on its Facebook page, referring to the perspective.
"Rest assured that we did our homework and consultants have already studied the site. Technically speaking, the initial number of floors for the hotel tower plays along 30-40 storey, nothing final yet," it explained.
The skyscraper will rise on old fishponds site near Dungon creek.
"There are modern construction methodologies we can apply in such soil conditions which are being applied all over the world including places like Manhattan, Singapore reclaimed areas, even our very own Roxas Boulevard," TVA&P clarified.
Traffic-free and flood-free urban planning is being seen to transform the city's business and economic landscape.
"Problems of traffic and flooding in our cities nationwide are a result of lack of proper urban planning in our country, we are only among many of talented Filipino architects and engineers who are trying to correct mistakes of the past in order for our cities to be self-sustaining," TVA&P assured.
"Let's not be disheartened by old mistakes and dwarf the potential of Iloilo City. Instead, we should use it as case studies to come up with better proposal," the firm suggested.
"In fact we are pleased to see public's concern for better architecture in our country. Everyone needs to cooperate and participate to make the built environments of the Philippines as beautiful as its subliminal coastline," TVA&P exclaimed.
"Your warm support energizes our talented team! Looking forward to visit Iloilo more frequently as the project progress!" the company expects to work closely with the Ilonggos.
"We are just as excited as you are! Thank you everyone for your support and sweet welcome with love to Iloilo City!" TVA&P told the excited Ilonggos.
An architectural design partnership, TVA&P is composed of new generation architects with the common goal of promoting world-class design concepts and technological innovations in a rapidly developing country.
It maintains close affiliation with foreign groups MWM ARCHITECTS of Oakland, California USA; Consulting Engineering Group, Doha, Qatar; and Cairo, Egypt and Architect Yoshihide Tamura of Osaka, Japan. (JVF/ICPIO)

batusay May 9th, 2012, 04:21 PM U.S. supports Iloilo City’s economic growth
ILOILO CITY, May 8 (PNA) – United States Ambassador to the Philippine Harry K. Thomas Jr. affirmed his country’s support to this city’s initiatives to make it a growth hub in the Visayas area.
“We are committed to assisting your efforts to bring about an enabling environment for social and economic growth,” Thomas stressed in his recent letter to Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog.
Iloilo City and the US Government are currently partners on the Cities Development Initiative program of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to spur the socio-economic growth and to address key constraints to growth and investment in Iloilo.
The program was launched here through the signing of memorandum of understanding between Mabilog and USAID/Philippines Mission Director Gloria D. Steele in March.
The partnership will open and maximize the city’s growth potential by working together in terms of higher education, energy, environment, health systems, and economic growth and investment.
“We look to this collaboration as an opportunity to work with you in transforming Iloilo into an even progressive city,” Thomas said.
He thanked Mabilog for opening the city to US presence and programs.
“We look forward to working together closely in the weeks and months ahead, and we eagerly anticipate the day when we can celebrate the achievement of our joint endeavor,” he added.
Prior to this, the US envoy expressed his gratitude for the all-out support of Mabilog and the city government in the successful run of America in 3D here in Iloilo on March 2 to 4, which showcased American culture, food, business and Embassy services in the Philippines. (PNA)

Iloilo's imposing old mansions serve as a reminder of the city's glorious pastBy BIBSY M. CARBALLOMay 9, 2012, 2:33pm
Iloilo's Molong district was among the city's most fashionable residential neighborhoods. The Lizares mansion at the Jaro district, a prestigious address (BIBSY M. CARBALLO)ILOILO CITY, Philippines - Iloilo’s Jaro district has long been known for the old rich families who lived in elegant mansions that today have seen better times. It is not a misnomer therefore to have dubbed Iloilo in olden times as the Queen City of the South.
On a quick trip to Iloilo on an invitation from longtime friend Lorli Villanueva nee Dima-ala, we viewed a handful of these mansions, some of which were located in Molo. Many of the houses were still occupied by descendants while others have been left to caretakers. Still, others were rented out to schools while others were abandoned and left to the forces of nature to contend with. Iloilo’s Historical Society lists the old mansions in the vicinity at over a hundred.
Lorli’s nephew Jhon Dima-ala just happened to be living in one of these mansions with his wife Kristina Hannah Consing at the time of our visit. But they were moving into their own home and everything in the mansion was topsy-turvy. Still, we were grateful to be able to see the once genteel interiors of an authentic century old home, one of the oldest in the district up for sale.
This was once the residence of Dona Petra Lacson who married G Yusay, the first judge of Manila. This family practically owned the entire Molo district in Iloilo. Records show that in this house, President Manuel L. Quezon stayed and slept as a guest, and President Sergio Osmeña visited. The couple had 10 children. One of them, Rosario, married Dr. and Iloilo Governor Timoteo Yusay Consing, whose daughter was Kristina Hannah.
After touring the home, Jhon offered to show us some of the other mansions with the help of Virgie Bacaling, the multi-talented Doctor of alternative medicine, and Psychology and a long time resident of Iloilo.
A simple home in Molo is revered for being the residence of Rosendo Mejica, writer, educator, philanthropist, head of a workers’ union.
The well known Lizares Mansion leads the outstanding homes of Jaro. Leased out to the Angelicum School since 1978, the Lizares still stands proud, its curtains shielding its interiors from passersby. It was designed in 1939 by Andres Luna de San Pedro, son of Juan Luna. During World War II, the Japanese occupied the premises leading to current day talk that at night, people still hear chains being dragged along its floors accompanied by moaning. Last Christmas season, the district decided to decorate the house with the lively Christmas lights in an effort to spread cheers and joy. Apparently, this has worked in placating restless spirits.
The Bobby Pison house is well- maintained by a son who stays in a bungalow behind the residence. The Pisons of Molo are the owners of half the diversion road properties including SM City, Smallville Subdivision, Ateneo de Iloilo and the Ayala Techno Hub.
The lovely Nelly’s Garden in Jaro was built in 1928. It was owned by philanthropist Don Vicente Lopez and wife Don Elena Hofileña. The place was named after their eldest daughter Nelly. It is a handsome property of hardwoods Narra and Tindalo, Now inhabited by caretakers, the house was once the venue of elaborate parties which were attended by the famous dancer-choreographer Leonor Goquinco, US Governor General Teddy Roosevelt, First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos and President Cory Aquino.
A once elegant mansion in Jaro leaning to one side was owned by Don Joaquin and Dona Pilar Ledesma who presented the house as a gift to their widowed daughter-in-law Emma Ledesma. Its dilapidated condition was the result several diggings made within the premises. It was believed there was gold buried underneath. It is said that Emma still lives in the house despite its sorry state today.
We wondered about the ruins of what appeared to be once a mansion in downtown Jaro. On our own, we sought out neighbors in the vicinity who sent us on a wild goose chase. Even Jhon had some difficulty until finally it was revealed to be the Sagado home, then turned into Casino Español, where prominent people gathered to play the game of Monte. Later, it became a ballroom. But there is really nothing definitely known of the place.
Searching for answers, we paid the Iloilo Museum a visit and found a book on historical homes that wasn’t very informative. The museum itself was definitely in need of funding. We wondered how a place as rich in legacy as Iloilo could leave their heritage to waste. Wasn’t there a government agency that could help? What does the Tourism Department say about it? Definitely, an organized tour of these colonial mansions could bring tourists into the city in droves. No one seems to have the answer. Time is running out.

true blue ilonggo May 9th, 2012, 06:48 PM 40-storey building to spur 'new' Iloilo sans traffic and flood
(JVF/ICPIO)

According to Engr. Noel Hechanova, summit director, the international summit is an offshoot of the programs initiated when the Iloilo River Development Council was convened last March 2011 by Ilonggo Sen. Franklin Drilon and Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.
Recently renamed as Iloilo-Batiano River Development Council, there has been a massive clean-up drive and development of the two rivers that cross Iloilo City and the neighboring town of Oton.
The council has been removing illegal structures, illegal fishpens, derelict vessels, dredging of creeks, mangrove replanting, and transferring of illegal settlers.
“There is a need for local governments to share experiences in river management,” Mabilog said.
The 3-day summit on May 30-June 1 will discuss river basin management, water resources management, biodiversity management, climate change, disaster risk reduction, and eco-tourism.
Mabilog emphasized that the summit is timely with typhoons hitting urban areas and causing frequent floods to highly populated cities.
Meanwhile, President Benigno Simeon Aquino III is set for his second official visit to Iloilo City as the summit’s keynote speaker.
Other speakers will include Sec. Ramon Paje of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) President Fred Eisenberger, and business mogul Manny V. Pangilinan.
The summit is expected to have participants from the United States, Canada, Australia, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Nepal, and Vietnam.

batusay May 9th, 2012, 07:22 PM Congress urged to open power franchise to other players
Wednesday, May 9, 2012
ILOILO City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog has asked the help Representative Jerry P. Treñas and Ilonggo Senator Franklin M. Drilon for Congress to review the franchise granted to the Panay Electric Company (Peco).
The mayor also asked the two lawmakers to consider opening a franchise to other players in the power distribution industry.
Mabilog said the opening of franchise to distribute power in Iloilo will ensure a reliable and continued supply of power in the city.
Peco is currently enjoying a congressional franchise as sole power distributor in the city.
With the present state of emerging developments in business and investments in the province, the city badly needs sufficient and reliable supply of power to give impetus to development and progress in Iloilo City, the mayor said.
A Mabilog letter dated May 8, 2012 was sent to Drilon and Treñas to open up the concern of Ilonggos on frequent power interruptions in the city.
A power interruption last May 3 for more than eight hours resulted to unquantifiable business losses, disruptions and ceased operations of public and private offices, meat products and processed food affected and cancellation of social functions, gatherings and important meetings and conferences.
The mayor said all these unexpected power failures caused millions of pesos in losses with no valid explanation from the Peco as the sole power distributor in the city.

The Remains Of The Day (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/359153/the-remains-of-the-day)
Iloilo's imposing old mansions serve as a reminder of the city's glorious past

Even Jhon had some difficulty until finally it was revealed to be the Sagado home, then turned into Casino Español, where prominent people gathered to play the game of Monte. batusay May 10th, 2012, 01:28 PM Iloilo capitol to rehabilitate Pavia bridge damaged by soil erosion
ILOILO CITY, May 10 (PNA) - The steel bridge that connects two villages of Cabugao Norte and Sur in Pavia town is currently impassable after the bridge tilt down due to soil erosion that damaged large portion of river banks.
“We will try to coordinate with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) of what help they could extend. If they could help, the provincial government is also willing to share for that construction or rehabilitation of the bridge," said Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr.
Prior to the damage of the bridge, the DPWH-6 was eyeing for the rehabilitation of around 1.3 kilometers river bank of Tigum River, including several portions of the Iloilo Flood Control Project (IFCP) in Pavia, Iloilo that were damaged due to rapid soil erosion brought by typhoon Frank in 2008.
Soil erosion could be seen along river banks of Brgy. Cabugao Norte and Sur, some portions of Brgy. Tigum along Tigum River, and portion of Mali-ao creek, a tributary of Aganan River.
Engr. Evelyn Barroso, regional director of DPWH-6 together with Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr., IFCP Vice President Engr. Leonila Chua, Badiangan Mayor Suzette Mamon, head of the League of Municipality of the Philippines (LMP)-Iloilo Chapter and Pavia Mayor Arcadio Gorrecita had personally inspected the affected areas November last year.
Upon inspection, Barroso said the damage need concrete repair to mitigate the present problem.
She added they are willing to fund the project by making recommendation based on the submitted report of IFCP on the actual extent of damages.
Barroso said she will ask budget from DPWH Central Office upon presentation of the actual damage.(PNA)

^^it's disappointing to read such news, especially regarding failing government infrastructures. When buildings we expect that can weather time and nature for a long time starts crumbling in a fortnight, questions and doubts follow.

this bridge was wash out during typhoon frank and it was re assemble after the June 2008 flood.. the integrity of foundation of the abutment of bridge was affected and the occurrence of soil erosion on that area. govt budget was allocated right on the project. we cant prevent the curse of nature.. isa pa ang damage was only abutment not the total bridge. the bridge was modular, steel bridge pwede assemble liwat.. madam indi man ya ma tiphag ang duta sa disyerto kay wala ya moisture kay wala sang flood water nga naga scour.. kung basihan ang soil composition sa ina nga section sang river loose na da ang duta amo na nga dasig sya mag erode..
the solution: construct spur dike or armor the river bank by constructing revetment on the slope of river bank.
problem: funding (pilipinas ini)
preventive measures: observe the legal easement of the river and prohibit structure with in easement area, then construct bridge by base on 50 year return period pra ma preparahan man ang eventualities.

"Liars, liars!" The oracle - obviously amused with a big grin on his face - said, referring to those group of creatures from the Black Kingdom, who were (as usual) building castles on the air with their hallucinations of towers and fortifications.
The creatures' source of "joy" - a not so high fortification with "solid walls with no windows" - is still uninhabited, yet they are already whining and crying like hyenas to the builder of the "not so high solid wall" to build a "higher solid wall".
"And to what end?", the builder asked. "You have not delivered yet on your promised compensation for my troubles. The expected rush of occupants did not materialize, because they are now more inclined to dwell on the sunnier "The Islands", where the smile is genuine (not hidden in grotesque masks) and where true love is".
Uncle Addy dies-dies laughing. :D

ILOILO CITY May 11 (PNA) – The Dept. of Tourism 6 is eyeing the upcoming 1st International River Summit as a push to the tourism industry of Western Visayas.
Atty. Helen Catalbas of DOT -6 said the river summit is expected to generate tourist arrivals with local and foreign delegates expected to converge in this city for three days starting May 30.
She added that since domestic and foreign tourists will be attending the summit, it will be an avenue for the generation of ideas, insights and an exchange of experiences involving the rivers of the world, particularly the Iloilo River.
The summit is likewise viewed by the department as an opportunity to draw attention to the need of a clean river as a venue for livelihood, tourism activity and other activities of the local and foreign individuals.
The department has been conducting tour guiding, grooming and courtesy seminars to the taxi drivers who will be servicing delegates in cooperation with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, Land Transportation Office, and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.
The Philippines News Agency (PNA) has been tapped as one of the media partners of the summit. (PNA)

ILOILO CITY, May 11 (PNA) – The Dept. of Tourism is looking forward to an international flight from Iloilo airport to Hong Kong and Singapore in the last quarter of 2012.
DOT 6 officer-in-charge Atty. Helen Catalbas confirmed that Cebu Pacific has agreed to accommodate internal flights from Iloilo to Hong Kong and Singapore.
Catalbas said the airport is being prepared to host international flights that will serve Western Visayas and its neighboring regions.
The airport she said will serve as hub for domestic flights coming from General Santos City and Puerto Princesa with connecting flights to the said countries instead of traveling to Metro Manila.
These international flights she said would aid in the promotion of more tourist destinations in Iloilo and other provinces like Roxas City, Capiz , Guimaras, Northern Antique, and Southern Iloilo which are now being developed by the local government.
As preparation, she disclosed that frontline trainings will be offered to personnel in the tourism industry like tour guides, transport service personnel, personnel from the hotels and other frontline personnel who will be dealing with tourists more often.(PNA)

i wouldn't mind an initially chartered thrust, so long as it will serve the whole length of its timeline.:cheers:

the sustainability of those proposed international routes using ILO remains to be seen. i'm actually more excited that an ILO-PPS and vv route will be established.
that said, since PPS is a growing tourist haven, such domestic route can in turn, hopefully sustain an overseas air route using ILO as a connecting or transit point.
but i have to say that the main market and the bulk of air passenger income would still be domestic driven which is what the ILO-PPS will generate once it starts.

looking back, i've always said time and again that we should firmly establish our domestic connections first before we go airborne, internationally!
atty catalbas, good job! i hope all will be according to plans. might as well consider establishing a route between ILO and DMIA in pampanga. that should further bolster our stability in the domestic tourism scene that could lead in turn to firmer overseas routes in the future.

DOT eyes int'l flight for Iloilo airport 4Q of 2012
ILOILO CITY, May 11 (PNA) – The Dept. of Tourism is looking forward to an international flight from Iloilo airport to Hong Kong and Singapore in the last quarter of 2012.
