Anyway, to those people who are skeptics about Iloilo's development and progress eat your heart's out! As usual, SSC Iloilo members base in Iloilo backed out their statement with photos. Pictures tells it all
I cant help but smile while other people are busy downplaying and malicious about the progress it doesnt stop the development in Iloilo.
While they are busy being bitter and pessimist about Iloilo, MW, Injap, Robinson's, Gaisano, Savanah and the list go on...continue working. Before they knew sila wakal kag hisa gihapon while ang mga projects nahuman na! Yeah right, usik lang sila tiyempo. Hihihi

would the third floor reserve for commercial rentable space?
a bank, a resto, a gift shop, a saloon, and a day care center fits nice.
BTW, pardon me but where is the city library located now?

Was there yesterday. Looks like I can now visualize what they like to do in Iloilo City. Singapore Marina Bay has some similarities with Zone 1 of Iloilo River. Now, if we can have something as iconic as the Merlion. The harbour in Zone 1 is already scenic. What more if we include all the way to Zone 4 (to Oton).
Re: 3rd floor. I heard it'll be a cafeteria area, something that may be similar to the corporate buildings in Ayala wherein one floor is devoted to a food court. But I'm not sure, unless sir Vic Facultad said something already.

barbas_bigote June 2nd, 2012, 03:31 PM This one I agree. One example is Barangay Roxas Village which is occupied almost entirely by Robinsons Place Iloilo. Majority of the small barangays are in City Proper. There were plans to dissolve the said barangay during the Trenas administration, but it didn't push through. Indeed, it'll take a lot of process--not just legislative, but political as well.
back when Iloilo City Streets were just residences. now its almost purely commercial. the old CBD needs more hotels.

barbas_bigote June 2nd, 2012, 03:56 PM why Iloilo is called the City of Love?
http://mirthpro1.wordpress.com/2012/05/11/iloilo-city-of-love/
If you’re looking for love, at least the universal kind, welcome to The Philippines’ “City of Love.” The sweetness of a gentle loving heart beats consistently in the native people, who are called “Ilongos” and whose history dates back to the 14th century. Despite its bustling city size of 500,000, rarely do you hear someone raise their voice in a public place; in fact, Ilongos are soft spoken to a fault. When I ask one for directions, a restaurant recommendation, or whatever, invariably I must ask twice because the answer is barely audible the first time. There is also a properness and formal quality in their communication style – in any social interactions they always address me as “sir,” even after lengthy conversations or multiple encounters. You could describe a typical Ilongo with the 3 R’s of human demeanor: reserved, relaxed, and respectful.
Before the Spanish conquest of The Philippines in the 16th century, folklore has it that visitors from Borneo came here to barter a gold hat and necklace for land from the indigenous Ati natives. In the late 18th century a thriving textile industry launched Iloilo’s economic surge, which by the next century was replaced by the sugar industry. Iloilo’s port became an international hub of exporting and importing. Wealthy families developed large tracts of land here and on nearby islands, ushering in the era of the hacienda as the demand for sugar exploded on the world market.
The conservative nature of Ilongos manifested in their initial cautious reaction to the 1896 Revolution against Spanish rule in Manila. Two years later it became apparent that the tide turned to independence and the city joined the new Philippine Republic, only to be colonized by the U.S. in 1901. The Japanese invaded in 1942 before the island was ultimately liberated by allied forces in 1945. After a period of economic stagnation from the sugar industry decline and labor unrest at the port, the city revived when a new international seaport and fishing port were constructed, which spurred new investments in banking, educational institutions, and other support-related enterprises. Iloilo reclaimed its position as the commercial capital of the Western Visayan Islands.

batusay June 2nd, 2012, 04:48 PM Iloilo River Esplanade to boost tourism – President Aquino
ILOILO CITY, June 1 (PNA) - President Benigno Aquino III expressed his appreciation for the beauty of the Iloilo River Esplanade, citing that it could boost the tourism landscape of Iloilo City.
This was shared by Senator Franklin Drilon who joined the President, Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and other local officials for a side trip to the 1.2-kilometer Esplanade Friday. The Esplanade was built through the senator’s Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF).
The Iloilo River Esplanade is part of the Iloilo River Development Project of the city government here and supported by Senator Drilon. The project’s initial phase costs around P58 million.
The project consists of the road widening of the Treñas Boulevard from the diversion road to Carpenters Bridge. It also has a view deck, palm trees planted at its park, fountain, lamp post and a giant Dinagyang warrior which signifies the city’s famous festival.
It will also provide a recreational space for walking, complete with stalls and restaurants, ease vehicular traffic since it is intended as a bike road and serves as fitness hub for fitness-conscious Ilonggos,
Fitness activities such as jogging and public aerobic classes will be available along the long open stretched especially during early morning and late afternoon.
The esplanade will also a good venue for photography enthusiasts who seek to capture the natural and scenic beauty of Iloilo River.
The esplanade, which is similar to the Singapore Quay, was designed by Architect Paolo Alcazaren who also worked on the said project.
Meanwhile, Drilon also said that Aquino congratulated city government officials for working hand in hand in the development of Iloilo City.
He said the President is looking forward to coming back to Iloilo City and enjoying the specialty foods of Ilonggos.
Also, Drilon cited that President Aquino committed to give additional fund for the housing projects for the people who will be affected by the Iloilo River Development Project.
He said they are doing their best to relocate the households situated in the danger zone of Iloilo River. He further added that relocating the residents near the river is necessary to clean the Iloilo River.
In a monitoring conducted by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the coliform level of Iloilo River is high but Drilon said that they are doing everything to continuously improve its water quality.
He added that they will get the support of the media to promote the project of the government to continuously purify and clean the Iloilo River. (PNA)

Stay, Stray, Play and Feast
Day 1,
Stay
We arrived in at Smallville 21 Hotel where we booked a family room.
The hotel was pretty new and still smells new...
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%201/IMG_2557.jpg
...the room was spacious and neat but
we were a little bit disappointed
as it doesn’t look like a family room at all.
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%201/IMG_2546.jpg
There are two beds, a queen sized bed and a single bed-
both to too small for the whole family to squeeze in,
no sofa where we could all cuddle up while watching TV,
the floor was not carpeted but rather tiled
not ideal for kids to laze, and play floor games.
You have to endure stepping on a cold floor
when you wake up in the morning...
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%201/Small1.jpg
The room was not warm enough to be called a family room.
There was no refrigerator where we could keep
the kids' milk and medicines.
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%201/Small2.jpg
It was located near the street
where we would hear the music blasting
until wee hours in the morning
coming from Pirates KTV bar right beside the hotel.

Except for the beds that are good enough for kids to jump-
there was nothing family friendly with that room at all.
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%201/IMG_2545.jpg
I requested for another room,
I was told they were full booked.
The staff was friendly and accommodating though
Feast:
The Avenue Lifestyle Center just across
the Smallvile 21 Hotel is a culinary treasure.
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%201/IMG_2553.jpg
On our first night in the city, two US- themed restaurants
caught our attention: Bourbon St. and Mojave
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%201/IMG_2555.jpg
My family loves American food.
We had to choose between good old Creole cooking in Bourbon St.,
and the call of the American West in Mojave...
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%201/IMG_2556.jpg
The temptation of having juicy ribs and burgers
was just too enticing to refuse.
Mojave gives you an ambiance
on being inside an Old American Tavern.
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%201/IMG_2577.jpg
It serves authentic Angus Beef
..and unlimited complimentary popcorn
made by an antique popcorn machine.

http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%201/IMG_2583.jpg
The Potato and Cheese Chowder was creamy and chunky
reminiscent of those in SF’s Fisherman’s Wharf ,
without hollowed sour bread where the latter is served.

http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%201/IMG_2569.jpg
My daughter ordered and Beef- Bacon Deluxe…
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%201/IMG_2561.jpg
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%201/IMG_2573.jpg
...while I got myself a giant 10 oz Angus Sirloin Burger….
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%201/IMG_2574.jpg
My wife and Son shared the really tasty Ribs and Shrimps
with barbecue flavored sauce..
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%201/IMG_2576.jpg
Everything tasted so great
that I gorged myself with the huge servings
until I was too full and drowsy and ready to sleep.
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%201/IMG_2580.jpg
Now who cares about sleeping in an uncomfortable hotel?
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%201/IMG_2585.jpg
Mojave is a five- star restaurant
without the five star- price tag.
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%201/IMG_2590.jpg
So far so good on our first day.
We’re beginning to love Iloilo.
Day 2: Iloilo and Guimaras
We were pre-booked to a Cabaling Resort in Guimaras for a day visit.
A private boat would take us directly to the resort at 10 AM at the Iloilo port.
Feast:
On our way to the port
we dropped by Ted’s Batchoy along the way
for some authentic Ilonggo la Paz Batchoy.
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI2/IMG_2607.jpg
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI2/IMG_2597.jpg
My daughter and I enjoyed the exotic taste of Batchoy
and gobbled everything up
to the last drop of the slightly bitter broth.
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI2/IMG_2604.jpg
But my wife and my son- were not impressed
…and their bowls of Batchoy were left half eaten…
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI2/IMG_2606.jpg
They settled for a Cheese Muffin
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI2/IMG_2605.jpg
and Almond Pie.
They were so good that we ordered more
to take long the way.
Stray
From the Iloilo port which was surprisingly clean and smell- free
despite being crowded with people and houses on stilts.

http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI2/IMG_2614.jpg
We were ferried by a private boat
that would take us directly to the resort in Guimaras.
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI2/IMG_2637.jpg
On the less than an hour boat trip,
we were treated to the spectacular sights

http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI2/IMG_2665.jpg

to the ferry boat waiting for us
that take us back to Iloilo at 5 PM

Feast:
Guimaras:
There was a seafood buffet at the clubhouse
But the kids were too engrossed in swimming.
I got us several plates of what was on the buffet…
the taste was so...so…

http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI2/IMG_2702.jpg
…that the food remained untouched until we left the resort.
The Sweet Guimaras Mango did not disappoint.
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI2/IMG_2704.jpg
They were so sweet and left us craving for more.
Feast:
Iloilo
Bauhinia Restaurant at the Avenue
served the most delicious Filipino fusion
that we have ever tasted.

http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI2/IMG_2784.jpg
Saying delicious is an understatement...
…as we consumed everything up to the last morsel
of food in our in our table.
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI2/IMG_2793.jpg
We were too full to return to the hotel
so we moved the Al fresco section of enjoy the desserts.

http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI2/IMG_2798.jpg
When we visited Ho Chi Minh City few months ago
we were unanimous that we will return to the city because of the food…
This restaurant made the same impression…
….and one good reason
why it is worth coming back to Iloilo again..
Day 3:
Iloilo
Stray:
Our third day was dedicated to see
the sights and sounds of Iloilo.
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2804.jpg
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2808.jpg

http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2811.jpg
It was so hot that we did not want to get out of the car
Except on three destinations…
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2819.jpg
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2823.jpg
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2831.jpg
First was at Museo Iloilo...
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2847.jpg
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2848.jpg
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2841.jpg
second was at Jaro Cathedral...
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2855.jpg
….and third at SM City Iloilo that served
as an oasis for the sweltering heat.
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2851.jpg
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2852.jpg
Iloilo is very rich in history, culture and heritage ...
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2853.jpg
...and there is a need for the city to create
guided group tours to take tourists around
heritage sites in a more organized way.
Feast:
Tatoy’s Manokan
The last time I was in Iloilo was in the early 90’s
and I remember Tatoy’s Manokan well…
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2918.jpg
I told my family that it’s a must visit
as it is a classic Ilonggo fare.
We ordered Lechon Baboy and Lechon Manok
vegetables and grilled fish…
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2906.jpg
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2905.jpg
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2907.jpg
…except for the grilled fish that was so delicious,
everything was left almost untouched on the table…
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2912.jpg
A trip to Tatoy’s was worth the nostalgia
The food?
Well, at least the fish was okay…
Feast:
Terra Mediterranean Resto
We wanted something light and healthy
for our last night in Iloilo
So we tried the Terra at the Avenue…
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2948.jpg
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2944.jpg
The beautiful restaurant
was a feast for the senses…
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2947.jpg
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2950.jpg
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2952.jpg
The menu was superb…
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2945.jpg
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2954.jpg
...and so was the food,
....from the Pasta…
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2959.jpg
…to the salmon…
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2963.jpg
…to the Mango Crepe as dessert…
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2964.jpg
It was a light but satisfying meal.
A perfect way to cap a rather busy day
Before heading back to the dreaded hotel room.
Play:
On our fourth and last day
with our flight still in the afternoon
we decided to take the kids to the nearby water park…
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2932.jpg
While my older daughter who’s wake boarder
said she was bored…
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2934.jpg
… my seven year old son says otherwise….
http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/rcaceres_jr/TEPI%203/IMG_2929.jpg
The water park was very photogenic
with a Latin American theme
and a good way to entertain the kids while waiting
for our flight back home at noontime.
We enjoyed everything in Iloilo.
The province is a cultural and culinary paradise.
The only drawback was the hotel.
If I were traveling alone seeking for an adventure-
I would have reviewed the hotel differently.
But for a family of four looking for a comfortable accommodation?
The hotel was not meant to be for that purpose.
Indeed, it's fun to travel in the Philippines
and it's more fun if you travel to Iloilo.
slex June 2nd, 2012, 08:18 PM bauhinia will always be on my list everytime i go home.

most of the guests who have stayed in that hotel will agree, maingay nga because of the bustling nightlife activity nearby.
better alternatives sana thats more family-friendly: sarabia manor, hotel del rio, amigo or days hotel --- 5-10 minutes away by taxi from smallville.
thanks for coming and hope you enjoyed your stay :)

Good morning Ilonggos!
@Naga Boy, thank you very much for such an honest review and fair assessment of Iloilo and Guimaras.
And for pointing out areas which needs improvement especially this :
...and there is a need for the city to create
guided group tours to take tourists around
heritage sites in a more organized way.
And boy we are glad that something is being done to make this a REALITY! Perhaps the next time you go back here, it will be a much better experience.
About FOOD and HERITAGE: yes you hit the mark! :okay:
We enjoyed everything in Iloilo.
The province is a cultural and culinary paradise.
And SOON a better port for Guimaras bound visitors with the construction of GIFT (Guimaras-Iloilo Ferry Terminal)
All in all, it was a joy to read. We here in SSC-Iloilo appreciate the effort you put into posting and sharing your wonderful experience.
Looking forward for your next visit. :)

We enjoyed Iloilo tremendously.
I was hesitant to post this hotel part and was planning to edit it out as I might offend some people in this thread.
It was a personal opinion and not meant demean the city but rather to have an honest to goodness guide for those traveling with family in Iloilo.
We would definitely come back and explore the suburbs and countryside of Iloilo and Guimaras.
Thanks for the tip- we'll try Hotel del Rio next time.
And thanks for the positive response despite having some negative insights on my travel review.

It should be posted as it will be a basis for some posters here who work in that area to look into the "real" need of travelers bringing with them their family when checking-in in a Hotel. Some of us here sometimes post blogs with not so good reviews, but that's the game, you can't really expect everything to turn out well. But over all you have a good stay in our City... and for that.

habagatcentral1 June 3rd, 2012, 04:40 AM @Naga Boy. Those negative notes that you have written are very constructive for an economy that Iloilo City and the province is developing. These are some points that needed to be improved. It is very highly appreciated by the people. :okay:
The slightly bitter broth of Ted's Batchoy though...I bet it's the over toasted garlic.

Within Metro Iloilo/MIGEDC area should have no hike..

Even Taxi going to Boracay has a minimum negotiable fare.

Indeed. Floyds in JM Basa (in front of Elizalde-COA Building) is open till 10PM. Green Mango and Coffee Break is open only until 8PM. Looks like Plaza Libertad area is getting better and better. I just hope that BPOs would start to look at the Eagle (TTK Building) as a BPO center, and so are the buildings in Calle Real (most especially Javellana and S.Villanueva Buildings which have ample space for offices).

lol, prepare some trenches then...
I thought Eagle building is already occupied by a BPO Office?
IMO, those Heritage Buildings should be an open space designed to cater tourist related businesses not BPO's.
I am even not keen on the idea of making it as a hotel.
One primary Issue is structural retrofitting.
and another is the Electro-Mechanical Installations like the aircons systems, Gen Sets, elevators and escalators?
It will be a huge huge(indi major major) undertaking. lol

Saw Fullerton Hotel yesterday in SG. A former post office that was made a 5-star hotel, while maintaining the structure as original as possible. If we do a major adaptive reuse to this, I guess it wouldn't be bad--at least these heritage buildings may have another purpose, at the same time a model for adaptive reuse. If there is an investor that is willing to spend money in renovating or retrofitting it, then I guess its a go, IMO.
you want a BPO site on a heritage building? try the Masonic Fronting the Plaza Libertad.
I think the upper levels are occupied as a Freemason lodge.
barbas_bigote June 3rd, 2012, 05:21 AM E-Lamp, I think. Pero mas nami kon magduro pa sya. The more, the merrier. BPOs make CBDs alive at night (except for the igpat igpat suga, hehe!) ditto,a mix of daytime businesses and nightime businesses in the area. less Videoke resto too..would the Mayor's office still renew those establishments next year? I REALLY HOPE NOT but I give in to his " wisdom" lol.

Yup! I have good friends there . good fella. They probably won't give a nod. lol...
How about we make a midrise at the back of City hall, there is an open lot there that's is awaiting to be develop. I think it would just be nice if it will stand 5-6 storeys.. good view of the river..:)

anthraxx June 3rd, 2012, 07:05 AM We enjoyed Iloilo tremendously.
I cant speak for others here, but personally i value honest opinions rather than one that doesnt tell the real story, only through honest critique can the city's shortcomings be known and eventually addressed.

Exactamento! Sugar-coating the negative parts would've come across as insulting and hiding them would've been worst. Simply stating them as facts is like opening a window for us (or to the people concerned) to work the opportunities on. Thanks too Naga Boy!

METROPOLITAN_ILOILO June 3rd, 2012, 08:14 AM Direct int'l flights from Iloilo Airport eyed
By Aurea Calica The Philippine Star Updated June 02, 2012 12:00 AM 0
MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino and Transportation and Communications
Secretary Manuel Roxas II gave assurance yesterday that the use of the Iloilo
Airport for direct international flights was on track, as necessary infrastructure would be ready as part of the “pocket open skies” policy.
Earlier, the Department of Tourism had given assurance of direct international flights from the Iloilo Airport to Hong Kong and Singapore starting October, notching with a regular flight before year-end.
The planned international flight, however, is a big challenge because airlines will have to stop flying the route without passengers.
Ilonggos will have to attract transient passengers to stay longer in Iloilo so as to attract other passengers and commuters, Sen. Franklin Drilon earlier said.
Visayan seafarers and overseas contract workers especially in Hong Kong and Singapore have to be aware of the direct flights, which will offer them least expenses than taking flights in Manila, Cebu or Clark.
Cebu Pacific has already signified its intention of having regular flights from Iloilo to Hong Kong every other day with four flights every week.
Iloilo-Singapore flights will be held thrice a week, as the airline also expands its flights from Iloilo to Puerto Princesa City in Palawan.
Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr. will soon declare the Iloilo Airport a gateway of Western Visayas, opening up Iloilo and the rest of Panay Island to
international visitors with tourism as the major focus.
Similarly, the Department of Transportation and Communications will also
include the arrival and departure areas of the Iloilo Airport in its expansion project for all ports and tourism gateways.
Aquino and Roxas, who were in Iloilo City for the First Philippine International River Summit, said the airport was already complete.
“The only thing lacking is for it to become international (in operations)... meaning the direct flight from abroad. So the President ordered the so-called open skies, the pocket open skies policy so that for example, those from Korea, Singapore,
Bangkok and other areas can already land here in Iloilo (on) direct international flights,” Roxas said.
He thanked Drilon for helping other Ilonggos promote the province as a tourist destination.
Roxas said yesterday’s conference was one good way of making Iloilo known as an international events center.
Aquino said the Iloilo Airport was a necessary infrastructure and “is the center of this particular region.”
“This is a necessary facility and the government will find a way to sustain its operations,” Aquino said.
He said tourist arrivals in the country have increased, reaching at least 400,000 in the first quarter of this year.
He said if the trend would continue, the Philippines could attract between 4.8 million and five million tourists this year.
“We are hoping to (have) 10 million tourist arrivals by the time I step down in 2016,” he added.

batusay June 3rd, 2012, 08:00 PM Ilonggo leaders relive Iloilo River memories
HE MAJESTIC Iloilo River at the heart of the metropolis speaks of magnificent, wonderful and colorful memories from Ilonggo leaders since decades ago.
The captivating waterway which serves as the city’s major asset stole spotlight and charmed audiences at the recently-concluded 1st Philippine International River Summit here.
“As a young boy, growing up along the banks of Iloilo River where my family lives, I remember then how people swam and fish in its waters,” recalled Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog.
“Our river was the source of livelihood and enjoyment for many Ilonggos. But time and tide changed many things. As I got older, I begin to witness such changes – in our city, in our river,” he noted.
Not only Mabilog got shares of swimming escapades at Iloilo River long before but also Senator Franklin Drilon and Governor Arthur Defensor.
“By the river we sat down and swam”
This might be the memories that moved Drilon who makes saving Iloilo River a crusade more than just a public servant but himself.
“I have a personal confession to make. Being a lawyer, my platform and agenda is on justice system and rule of law. But after I have seen how the Iloilo River deteriorated – the river where I and Governor Defensor used to swim – I said I will adapt the agenda on climate change and environmental protection – and I would start here in Iloilo,” stressed Drilon.
“That is why I began sitting down in the Iloilo River Development Council. I am committed to revive the Iloilo River as centerpiece of economic development in Iloilo,” the legislator told over a thousand participants at the 1st Philippine International River Summit.
Our river, our life
“Now we realize that life on this earth depends a lot on our rivers… if our rivers die, we die. We must learn how to take care of our rivers, we must learn how to preserve and continue the life of our rivers,” Defensor encouraged.
Colonies of informal settlers have started to mushroom along the river banks, building houses on stilts. Fish pens that contribute to siltation are almost everywhere, and rundown boats and ships have used its banks, too, as the final resting place for their decrepit structures, said Mabilog.
Cleaning the river
“But all these have changed. Most of the informal settlers had been relocated to better and safer places. Those who remained are simply waiting to move to the government’s socialized housing projects during the last quarter of this year,” the mayor said.
Fish pen owners have voluntarily dismantled their structures and were provided with funds to pursue alternative livelihood. The derelicts had been removed.
“Commercial establishments along the river are beginning to put up wastewater facilities, and crews of cleaners are doing a daily sweep of the river for floating debris and waste materials,” Mabilog explained.
Eco-tourism
“We have also begun cleaning the formerly inhabited banks of the Iloilo River. We envision the river as a major eco-tourism zone and we are getting close to achieving this dream,” he promised.
“In some parts, we are establishing easements and environmental protection area along both banks of river for more effective abatement of dumping solid wastes into the river,” the city’s chief executive said.
“We are also proud to say that, as of latest report, the water quality of Iloilo River has vastly improved and endemic marine life is beginning to thrive again in its waters,” Mabilog exclaimed.
“We remain optimistic we can create a healthy and sustainable aquatic environment in the river before the year ends,” he assured.
Our river, our pride
“Our efforts to resuscitate our river earned distinctions from the International Liveable Communities Award where the Iloilo River Development Project won Gold in 2010 for Environmentally Sustainable Projects,” Mabilog said.
“The project again won the 2011 LivCom Special Project Award for Iloilo City – Post LivCom: Advancing the Iloilo River Development Initiatives for Integrated Sustainable Management. The reason we clinched this Special Award was because we manifested our intention that the city hosts an international river summit this year,” he enthused.
Sharing Iloilo River experience
“This is precisely what we want to share with you: our Iloilo River experience. We’re happy to say we’re making progress and we have proven that nothing is impossible for a united and committed people,” said Mabilog.
“The task has never been easy. But we choose to walk the straight and righteous path by turning away from dumping garbage so conveniently into our river, by educating our people about the need to be more vigilant in conserving and rehabilitating our environment for future generations,” he urged.
“We’d like to praise and thank all delegates and speakers many of whom travelled great distances to join us in the summit. I know you too have river experiences and best practices you’re willing to share with everyone,” said Mabilog.
He also cited various local government units, local chief executives, non-government organizations and government agencies.
Clean river for healthy living
“Undoubtedly, the summit not only expressed the highest consideration in strengthening and expanding international cooperation for management and sustainable development of our respective water resources, but also indicated a strong commitment for cooperation starting today and hopefully for the coming generations,” Mabilog affirmed.
“For many of us, however, much remains to be done if we want our rivers to become rich ecosystems. We know that dreadful river conditions affect the health of our citizens and the quality of living in our respective spheres,” he added.
“Clean rivers mean safer water sources and better aquatic produce. Cleaner banks and waterways mean better, more attractive living and working conditions,” Mabilog asserted.
Good intentions, strong will for river
“Improving the quality of our rivers signify the heights we can reach when we work together. We can dream; we can strive; and we can achieve. With unity, I know we can do it,” he declared.
Mabilog quoted Barun Roy, columnist of India’s leading newspaper Business Standard, saying “he appropriately expressed our sentiments when he wrote: When good intentions are backed by strong will, even a dead river can be brought back to life.”
“The objective of the summit is for us to learn from each other through best practices and scientific approaches. Our purpose is to boost our knowledge, strengthen our coordination, collaboration, and cooperation to achieve our common goals of sustaining rivers free of pollution and creating environments our respective people can all enjoy and be proud of,” the mayor stated.
“That with good intentions and a strong singular will, we can bring our rivers back to life,” Mabilog avowed. (JVF)

batusay June 3rd, 2012, 08:02 PM PNoy reiterates PPP in river restoration
By: Tara Yap
PRESIDENT Benigno Simeon Aquino III reiterated the need for a public-private partnership (PPP) in restoring the country’s river systems and water resources.
“Our rivers are now amongst the most beleaguered of our natural resources because of poor water management,” Aquino said at the culmination of the 1st Philippine International River Summit last June 1.
As a countermeasure in the degradation of the country’s 421 major river basins, the President urged to follow the PPP initiatives in the rehabilitation and development of the Iloilo and Batiano Rivers, which crosses the city of Iloilo and neighboring town of Oton.
“The work they have poured into restoring and protecting the rivers are impressive,” Aquino said on the cleanup drives, dredging operations, replanting of mangroves, and the construction of a 1.2-kilometer river park.
“This summit has shown us that there are ways for us to balance our needs with our wants: to make use of our rivers and other water resources without destroying or draining them,” Aquino reminded the more than 1,000 Filipino and foreign participants.
The President also cited the P11.2-billion mega irrigation project in central Iloilo province that is spearheaded by Ilonggo Senator Franklin Drilon.
“The Jalaur River Multipurpose Project-Stage II is not only a prime mover that will benefit 18,000 of our farmers by providing irrigation to 32,000 hectares of farmland, but will also augment the water supply, and contribute to the power supply requirements of residents in Iloilo through a proposed hydroelectric power plant,” Aquino noted.
“This is what we mean when we talk about balancing needs and wants: the sustainable development and use of rivers,” Aquino emphasized.
Meanwhile, Drilon and Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog challenged local governments and the private sector to maintain lasting partnership in the sustainability of preserving and protecting river systems not only in the country but around the world.

Maayong Aga Iloilo!
Nagkadto ko diri, indi sa mang-away ha! Being Aklanon, syempre nagaexpect man kmi it dako nga improvements gid ya sa amon airport kay nakita gid namon ang need para sa airport. Kon nabal-an niyo piece by piece gid man ang developments. Nagkaroon lang siguro ng misinterpretation sa mga info na nabasahan niyo. I have no against din sa Iloilo airport, sa totoo lang lagi ko binibisita ang iloilo (airport and city thread) kasi gusto ko makita ang fresh developments/improvements sa lugar niyo, I want Iloilo the same you dream on your beloved city..
Pagdating naman sa sustainability, ang flight frequency sa Kalibo airport is just almost the same as that of Iloilo airport for now. Minsan, umaabot din ng 29 flights in a day at average 25 flights a day. Sa domestic, we have: Manila, Cebu and Clark. International: Incheon and Busan in South Korea, Taipei, Hongkong. For China: Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou has been stopped due to Scarborough Shoal Issue. For the present yan ang Kalibo airport.
The main issue here is we want the same airport development as what happened to Iloilo.
Yon lang po. Maraming Salamat

yeah, ganyan talaga..As what I posted in KLO thread, it will have its time soon. Syempre dala na rin sa bugso ng damdamin may misunderstanding, but the good thing is that hindi pinapalaki ang issue, which I think wala naman. Sa totoo lang sa Area 5 ang malaking kita ng CAAP, sa tatlong malalaki (ILO, BCD and KLO).:)

METROPOLITAN_ILOILO June 4th, 2012, 07:57 AM thanks for reminding me that pre. ang iban gali nga projects were financed thru loans. and at the rate things are going, there's a very good chance for us not defaulting on those loans! ambot lang dira sa iban ya!
spoiled gani ang iban tungod sa IRA. pila na ka dekada ina. indi ka gani regional center tapos mas damu pa imo government finances thru IRA. tapos kita pa ang pagwa-on nila nga dalok.
for the longest time, they've been voracious in gulping for themselves, a greater chunk of government budgets. and what has their economy got to show for it after all this time? still a monocrop agricultural and semi-feudal economy whose singular commodity has a staggeredly fluctuating demand in the world market.
after all that decades long generous IRA had been factored in, all their economy was able to show is converting areas into cities with swathes not of urbanity and but of an oppressively landlord laden economy. and those extravagant landlords' lifestyle is their basis for them to tag their hometown with an affluent economy. affluence? check that again. it has region's highest poverty rate with a pronounced insurgency. slavery and rampant landlordism do not co-exist with affluence.
the affluent society--which had been so associated with the developed, western world--is never associated with the philippines. it remains a pipe dream for us. what makes them think they are an exception to the rule! their self-attributions are obviously, hubris and delusion rolled into one!
furthermore, don't start with me on the fact that people from panay have been crossing the pond for centuries and contributed to that poverty level. the fact all your economy could muster is to slave them over to all those endless stretches of sugar plantations is evidence that your economy didn't diversify its develoment to provide better jobs. hence, the high povery level because of years of accumulation. conversely, the province of iloilo doesn't only produce diverse agricutural commodities that have consistent demand, they are staples of our economy. that situation supports stability. and landordism here is nothing compared over there!
for the expediency of some people here, we are not the ones who are dalok. it's the other way around! we are not the ones who are spoiled. it's the other way around. and for a number of years now, we have been efficient in utilizing government financial resources that benefit our public.
^^
To borrow MK's words, that is what you call
FATALITY : FLAWLESS! :applause:
Words cut deep even through dense skulls and pachyderms. :hilarious
METROPOLITAN_ILOILO June 4th, 2012, 08:14 AM ka massive gali sang ayala plan sa iloilo. and soon ma start na sila
they already conduct soil investigation kag ang mga tall building nga ina base na ina sa result sng soil testing.
then ground breaking schedule on 2nd quarter same with finance hospital
wow!! abi ko wala gana ang ayala sa iloilo? and on instant just a matter of year bullishgali ila plan sa iloilo kag wala na TRO:nuts::nuts::nuts::nuts: .
WHO's NOW THE LEFT BEHIND?we already have your ALAS :lol::lol::lol::lol:
AYALA may ari man kami sa iloilo
ti MEGAWORLD ya may ara kamo?:bash::bash::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
^^
IMHO, halin sang una daw sila man lang ang nagalagas kag TH nga mangin Regional Capital? To no avail.:lol::lol:
Now that GAP is widened further. To put it in proper perspective, they behave as if the only gauge of progress and development in their place is hinge on a single project of ALI. Even that is hanging in the air. In other words : uncertain. Now, the ALI project that they are touting to high heavens as if they have sole exclusivity over it is not what it seems. In the first place it was just a proposal. No more, no less.
ALI's project in Iloilo is much bigger in scope and what more is that, it has certainty of being realized sooner. No TRO or legal impediments whatsoever to stop it. Simply put, we do our business fair and square, no under the table negotiations etc.
So who do we blame? :hilarious
The 'old man' dies-dies laughing.
samsung22 June 4th, 2012, 10:15 AM City ready for tours
ILOILO CITY, June 4 – Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog announced that this city is ready to accommodate tourists and conduct tours for them.
This, after delegates of the 1st Philippine International River Summit had a special tour of the city last week and experienced first-hand the attractive destinations around the metropolis.
“With the success of the city tour following the summit, I can say that we’re definitely ready for tourists to come and explore what our city has to offer,” Mabilog said.
Summit delegates were treated to a sightseeing of the new Iloilo Wetland and Bird Sanctuary, Iloilo River Esplanade and the city’s heritage areas in various districts.
Mabilog said a half-day tour is feasible using a small bus or coaster that can go around tourist destinations here.
A proposal is now pending at the City Council to make amendments in the Perimeter Boundary Ordinance that will allow bigger tourist buses to enter the city, but the mayor said he may have to ask council members to consider the idea of smaller ones to bring guests around.

lewdsaint June 4th, 2012, 11:22 AM Internat’l river summit puts Iloilo City in global map
by Jed Patrick E. Mabilog
on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 3:06pm
ILOILO CITY, June 4 – With the successful hosting of the 1st Philippine International River Summit, this city has been place in the global map, according to Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog.
“We have sent a positive signal to the international community that we are capable of hosting events like the river summit,” he said.
The city hosted for the first time the 1st Philippine International River Summit May 30 to June 1 at the Centennial Resort and Convention Center in Jaro district.
Mabilog said the 1,203 participants were satisfied with the way the summit was handled.
“A lot of best practices and knowledge were transferred and learned from the three-day event,” he added.
Summit director Engr. Noel Hechanova said the summit achieved its purpose of coming up with good networks or linkages with organizations of rivers in Australia, Japan, Asia-Pacific and Maryland, U.S.A.
“We received positive response from them so we can now hope to continue the exchange of information and scientific knowledge with them even after the summit,” Hechanova stated.
Meanwhile, Mabilog said the manifesto passed by the delegates for the protection of the rivers of the world and to address environmental problems will also make Iloilo City known to the world.
“The Iloilo City Declaration of Global River Initiatives” signed by participants on June 1 will be submitted by the Philippine Climate Change Commission to the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on June 20 to 22, 2012.
“This is another first, the name of Iloilo City will forever be recorded in the UN conference,” Mabilog said.
The manifesto hopes to integrate biodiversity management, disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation in the national and local legislative agenda.
Capacitating local government units and enhancing their access to resources and technology were also included in the declaration. (Iloilo City PIO)

:hilarious

Panoy June 4th, 2012, 11:43 AM Ilonggo leaders relive Iloilo River memories
HE MAJESTIC Iloilo River at the heart of the metropolis speaks of magnificent, wonderful and colorful memories from Ilonggo leaders since decades ago.
...................................
I know you too have river experiences and best practices you’re willing to share with everyone,” said
“That with good intentions and a strong singular will, we can bring our rivers back to life,” Mabilog avowed. (JVF)

babaylan June 4th, 2012, 02:15 PM Iloilo's Go: First female general in AFP history
ILOILO CITY, June 4 (PNA) -- Most men excel in military service because of their physical strength and capacity. However, these were not the basis for an Ilongga to become the first female general in the history of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
Apart from being the first female general, Brigadier General Ramona Palabrica-Go, who is now the present AFP’s Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, J1, was also proclaimed as the first female pilot, first female brigade commander and first female line general.
Prior to her present position, she was the 28th Adjutant General of the AFP.
Go, who hails from a poor family in San Dionisio, Iloilo believes that being poor is not a hindrance to one’s success. She added she has more focus and determination to achieve what she desires in life that's why she became an achiever.
Go graduated from her elementary grades in San Dionisio and her high school at the Iloilo National High School. She took her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (BSC) at the Central Philippine University (CPU) and finished on March 1977.
