I'm looking forward to this, and more world-class convention centers. The largest convention hall we have here is probably Kalantiao Hall of Sarabia Manor, or perhaps the one at Alta Tierra. And even then, they are not enough, and world-class facilities are lacking.

problem with our local investors few years back is the question "which comes first? the chicken or the egg?".
But nowadays mindsets are changing in Iloilo City.
how ilonggos think about high risk-high yield/low risk-low yield investments, how "liquid" should his money be and how to play the game as a "well informed risktaker".

angelkirk89 June 30th, 2012, 01:49 PM Couple of weeks from now, megaworld's 6-lane main road at old Iloilo airport will be open to the public motorists. Mandurriao jeepneys will be diverted in that road to give way for the renavation of the old airport road.
Just a friendly traffic advisory from me.:)
Wahhh. Exciting news. Tani matapos nila landscape ila Avenue. By that time, for sure makita ta na ang underconstruction sa sulod na mismo.

June 29, 2012, 8:38pm
ILOILO CITY, (PNA) - Government and private sectors are very keen on taking advantage of Iloilo City’s booming potentials as ideal convention destination in the country.
Initial plans to put up convention centers in the metropolis are in the pipeline including facilities and amenities for hosting and organizing big events and gatherings here.
Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog is eyeing a city-owned lot in Molo district for the construction of convention center, noted Atty. Eduardo Peñaredondo, executive assistant for infrastructure.
A perspective with project name, Iloilo Convention Center, which includes construction of a building with office, has listed the City Government as client of the design as posted on website of Izumo Contractors, Inc.
Industry players were long vouching for a 5,000-seat facility for hosting of big events such as the annual AdCongress that is seen to boost the city’s capabilities as the next convention destination.
Designer firm T.I Vasquez Architects & Planners Inc. (TVA&P), of the proposed 15-hectare Gaisano Iloilo Center in Mandurriao district, is set to start early next year, said they are also considering putting up a convention center.
“We are happy to update you that the convention center is semi-approved from Gaisano Group. We are currently conducting a more comprehensive soil and site study to proceed with the next phase in design,” TVA&P said on its Facebook post.
TVA&P said they had a recent presentation with the owners that went very well and initial study schemes of additional structure will be posted when it’s ready.
“It is still under studies and discussions with our client. We’re looking at all options and possibilities we have to accommodate the required components while keeping the conceptualized romance of this proposed built environment intact,” TVA&P stressed, referring to the Manhattan-like business park with a centerpiece of 40-storey skyscraper.
“We want to generate enough activity to sustain the development. Arch. Topy Vasquez will be there first week of July along with his students for a field analysis,” the firm said.
Likewise, Megaworld Corp’s ongoing 54-hectare Iloilo Business Park will host the Le Grand Richmonde Hotel, a high-end counterpart of the 12-storey Richmonde Hotel Iloilo with convention facilities, to rise in the old airport property in Mandurriao district.
Furthermore, the Iloilo International Convention Hotel, with planned 500 rooms and 5,000-seat convention hall capacity, has a feasibility study funded with P500,000 in the 2013 budget of the Department of Tourism (DOT) Western Visayas regional office.

Ladies’ PAL Interclub set in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo
Manila Southwoods defends its PAL Ladies’ Interclub title in September when Iloilo’s age-old Sta. Barbara layout hosts the second edition of the event’s revival, with organizers expecting an even bigger field compared to last year.
After being put on hold for more than two decades, the Ladies’ Interclub saw its rebirth last year at Rancho Palos Verdes in Davao, drawing 22 teams with the Carmona-based parbusters coming out on top.
Del Monte, starring the veteran Eva Miñoza, placed second to Southwoods and that rivalry is expected to spill over this year.
“The response we had last year in terms of team participation was indeed encouraging. We expect more teams to sign up this year for this event will be a permanent fixture in the local golf calendar,” says PAL executive Dina May Flores, chairman of the event.
Adopting the theme “Fairways and Magic” this year, the tournament is now accepting entries from all over the world for the event set on Sept. 18 to 21.
Interested parties may course their inquiries through lalaine_navarro@pal.com.ph.
Players need to represent a local club to apply for inclusion in the event, while foreign-based participants need to form a team of 6 to 8 players to be able to compete in the four-to-play, three-to-count format.
Senior men’s Interclub rules will apply for the duration of the event.

Iloilo’s Belgian Lace
Two weeks ago, I made a sudden trip to Iloilo to accompany my cousin, Ruby Ebro Almeda, a New Yorker who has been in the fashion business for as long as I can remember. Ruby, unlike her other cousin Josie Almeda Cruz-Natori who creates her own internationally-renowned Natori fashion line, is a fashion purchaser for respected stores in the USA.
Ruby was born with an innate passion for fashion and things beautiful related to fashion. This is exactly what she lives for; and has done quite well in all these years in her field of choice. “I am so sick and tired of mass produced fashion and accessories made in China proliferating all over the globe,” she told me as we covered several stores in Davao City for creatively designed and well-made products she could bring back to the USA with her. Naturally, having been gone for so long, she was amazed with the proudly made-in-Davao products of Maricris Floirendo-Brias, Ann Tiukinhoy-Pamintuan, Baby Maceda-Montemayor and of course, Mae and Carmaela Braceros Alcantara. Oh yes, she brought a lot of Davao-made products to bring home with her to show to prospective clients. “At least, I am now starting to do my share in helping the country and my fellow Filipinos,” she stated....
..While visiting Iloilo for the sole purpose of purchasing pina, hablon and sinamay hand-woven fabrics of life, which she said she hopes would catch the attention of foreign buyers who are now focused on organic textiles, we took a side trip to Santa Barbara to check on the tip of Mrs. Cecilia Gison Villanueva of the House of Sinamay of Arevalo. “Have you heard of Belgian laces handmade in Iloilo?” was what the queen of Iloilo’s sinamay and pina fabrics asked us. I’ve been to Iloilo several times in the past but never did I hear of Belgian laces handmade in Iloilo. Of course, Ruby decided immediately to go to the place right away. To think that we still had to have lunch and it was already 3:00 p.m. Of course, I complained to her that I was no New Yorker! She was determined to have her way though.
It was about a thirty minute drive to get to Santa Barbara’s Western Visayas Sanitarium from downtown Iloilo. We had to ask pedicab drivers along the way for its exact location as my cousin Margot Magallanes-Valderrama’s driver didn’t know the place. Santa Barbara’s Western Visayas Sanitarium houses the Women United Through Handcrafted Lace and Embroidery, Inc. (WUTHLE, Inc.), a project which turns bobbin lace-making and embroidery into a livelihood for women ex-Hansenites (ex-lepers) and their talented relatives.
Bobbin lace is a lace textile made by braiding and twisting lengths of threads which are wound on bobbins (like small wood pegs) to manage them. As the work progresses, the weaving is held in place with pins set in a lace pillow with the placement of the pins usually determining a pattern. Bobbin lace is one of the two major categories of handmade laces, the other being needle lace. It originated from braid making or passementerie in 16th century Italy. Women then took to the craft to earn a better income than they would in sewing, spinning, and weaving textiles. European towns which had lace as a major industry included Belgium, Spain, Northern Portugal and France. It was the wealthy nobility which supported this industry centuries ago.
“It all started with a birthday gift given to a Belgian ICM missionary sister named Sr. Madeleine Dieryck some time in 1985. Sr. Madeleine, who was working and taking care of Hansenites (lepers) at the Western Visayas Sanitarium in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo, was given a beautifully embroidered handkerchief by two young girls who were daughters of Hansenites. Sr. Madeleine later asked the girls to embroider some more hankies to be sent as tokens of gratitude to the Sanitarium’s benefactors. These hankies were so appreciated that orders came for more. The two girls had to teach other women, ex-Hansenites, as well as relatives, and the project grew miraculously,” explained Sr. Jessy Augustine, ICM, who manages WUTHLE.
“However, Sr. Madeliene’s attention was caught by many women who suffered from deformities on their hands and who could not hold a needle. While on home-leave in Belgium, the kind sister studied how to make bobbin lace and a new artistic skill was soon taught among the ex-Hansenites in WUTHLE Iloilo. The livelihood project grew rapidly and in 1996, it became a corporation. At present, embroidery and lace-making is a valuable means of income to the women here in WUTHLE,” revealed the missionary sister.
My cousins Ruby Ann E. Almeda, Liliana Araneta Lopez and I were amazed with the dexterity of the nimble fingers of the old ladies of WUTHLE in producing lace and embroidery works from almost primitive equipments. Oh, how it was to watch the ladies at work. There were no pretty lace pillows to stick the pins into but small wooden tables covered with plastic sheets were more than satisfactory. Indeed, the products the ex-Hansenites turn out are priceless. To borrow Sen. Loren Legarda’s words, each of these laces and embroideries is a foundation that shapes and builds a community. Every piece of bobbin lace and embroidery tells a story; and every thread supports a precious livelihood. “There’s a social dimension. It’s not simply aesthetics,” as Sen. Loren Legarda would aptly describe it.

batusay July 1st, 2012, 08:40 PM Mass tree planting on July 14
ILOILO City – Twenty-seven sites in the districts of Jaro, La Paz, Molo, Mandurriao and Arevalo have been identified by the City Agriculturist’s Office (CAO) for a mass tree planting.
Some 4,000 jackfruit seedlings will be planted on July 14. It will be provided by the CAO.
Each office or department of city hall is assigned to plant in a particular site.
Every group will converge in their respective assembly points before 7 a.m.
The mass tree-planting is in line with the thrust of Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog towards preserving and protecting the environment.
Mabilog initiated the activity last year in support of the National Greening Program of President Benigno S. Aquino III.
A similar simultaneous tree-planting activity was conducted June 11, 2011 in different barangays here. (LMS, Iloilo City PIO/PN)

batusay July 1st, 2012, 08:42 PM Can Western Visayas attract 10 million tourists by 2016?
ILOILO City – The Regional Development Council (RDC) of Western Visayas targets to draw 10 million tourists to Region 6 by 2016.
It recently passed three major resolutions to boost the region’s tourism industry.
The first seeks the formulation of an “Action Plan for Tourism Development Areas” (TDAs).
For this, RDC plans to hold a two-day conference-workshop with the Department of Tourism as lead agency.
There are currently four tourism development areas (TDAs) in the region:
* Metro Iloilo and Guimaras
* Bacolod-Silay
* Boracay, Northern Antique and Kalibo; and
* Capiz.
The workshop slated in September will be attended by provincial and city tourism officers, planning and investment officers, leaders of tourism-related organization, policymakers and tourism stakeholders in Western Visayas.
The RDC also seeks the creation of a permanent position for tourism officers in local government units (LGUs). This is required under Republic Act 9593 (Tourism Act of 2009).
Many local government units have yet to create the said position, RDC observed.
This has affected tourism promotion efforts and tourism report generation which is vital in planning, stressed RDC.
The council also called on local government units to develop and market regional products through various strategies, including promotion in tourism sites, major events and local stores.
It likewise urged local governments to assist households and communities in producing goods and services needed by tourism-related establishments.
This would also mean additional income for families and communities in their areas, RDC stressed. (PIA-6/PN)

“Yung football, ‘di naman pang-habambuhay yan,” said Araneta, who grew up playing football with Caligdong from their childhood days at Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo until their days in the Air Force. “Syempre, iniisp din niya yung future ng pamilya niya.”

eonynx July 2nd, 2012, 08:23 AM Can Western Visayas attract 10 million tourists by 2016?
ILOILO City – The Regional Development Council (RDC) of Western Visayas targets to draw 10 million tourists to Region 6 by 2016.
It recently passed three major resolutions to boost the region’s tourism industry.
The first seeks the formulation of an “Action Plan for Tourism Development Areas” (TDAs).
For this, RDC plans to hold a two-day conference-workshop with the Department of Tourism as lead agency.
There are currently four tourism development areas (TDAs) in the region:
* Metro Iloilo and Guimaras
* Bacolod-Silay
* Boracay, Northern Antique and Kalibo; and
* Capiz.
(PIA-6/PN)
Link (http://www.panaynewsphilippines.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=89:can-western-visayas-attract-10-million-tourists-by-2016&catid=39:iloilo&Itemid=13)
domestic tourism would always be the long term and viable initial catalyst in making this possible. the DOT should make the following routes a priority within the next 12 to 24 months:
1.) ILO-PPS
2.) ILO-ZAMBOANGA
3.) ILO-CLARK
and possibly,
4.) ILO-LEGASPI
5.) ILO-CAMSUR
also, add frequencies to the ILO-CGY route since it is always fully booked and many passengers in that route can't get tickets in time because demand always outstrips supply in that route. make the expansion of the airport NOW and make the antique airport operational.
it's really a no brainer. if all these domestic routes will be opened and the airport in antique will become operational, that 10 million tourists target is well within reach. when all these domestic routes are taken cared of, then the viability and sustainability of the overseas ones are not far fetched.

lewdsaint July 2nd, 2012, 09:29 AM Esplanade inauguration on August 18
By Lydia C. Pendon
ILOILO CITY – All set for the completion and inauguration of the P70 million Esplanade project along the Iloilo River on August 18, 2012.
This was reported by Department of Public Works and Highways Reg. Dir. Ed Tayao to Senator Franklin M. Drilon and Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog on Monday, July 3 during the Iloilo Batiano River Council meeting.
Tayao said the completion as assured by contractor Roprim Construction is targeted on August 15 complete with the greening and landscaping along the 1.2 kilometer Treñas Boulevard including the statue of a Dinagyang warrior and playground.
International architect Paolo Alcazaren was the project consultant of the Esplanade patterned after the esplanade project of Singapore.
City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the inaugural rite is part of the overall jubilee celebration and activities of the Iloilo City Charter slated on August 24, 2012.
The Esplanade inauguration will include an early morning fun run and fluvial parade with muses at the river, mini dragon boat competition, balsa, baroto race and swimming competitions and awarding of prizes in the afternoon.
The celebration will be capped by fireworks and entertainment concert in the middle of the river.
On the other hand, Drilon said another project along the river, the Esplanade II will take off early next year. A 700 meter road along the Medical City Hospital with be funded with P37 million and the amount will be included in the 2013 national budget of the public works department.
Esplanade II is an extension of Esplanade I in making the river as an important ecotourism site in the city. Surplus block materials from the Iloilo flood control project will be used in the project and will not be used so that it will not be expensive than the other one.

Royal Course
Your tides' spirit is mostly calm
Flowing through your gentle kingdom
Of people with a singsong tone
Like the smooth, winding course you own
You were once the blue, royal scene
Where riches were docked for your Queen
Jewel of the crown that was made
And given because of your trade
The city's fortune is your wife
In trying times and renewed life
Abound again, will your fishes
Both divine and man made riches.

eonynx July 2nd, 2012, 02:21 PM The Iloilo Paraw Regatta
Written by Jonathan Grant
Now on its 39th year, the Iloilo Paraw Regatta is the oldest traditional craft event in Asia, and the largest sailing event in the Philippines. The Iloilo Paraw Regatta Foundation currently organizes the activities, with leading support from the Iloilo City and Provincial Governments and the Department of Tourism, along with private sector donations.
Activities have been expanded to spread over a week. On the Saturday of the climactic weekend there is slalom racing on a course by the beach to facilitate crowd participation. On the Sunday, the thirty-kilometer distance race is sailed on a course in the Iloilo Strait, running up the coast of Panay and then down the coast of Guimaras, before returning to the finish at Villa Beach. Participant exposure to the events is in the tens of thousands.
The geophysical shape of the Iloilo Strait provides year round breezes. Thus the working sailboat still predominates. In these times of high fuel costs, and polluting oil spills, one can appreciate the simple ecology of the traditional paraw. Nevertheless, the skills needed to sail are far more complex.
The objective of the Regatta is to celebrate the skills of the paraw sailors, and bring a fiesta spirit into their lives. And with the colorful painted sails, this spirit is brought into the lives of participants and tourists as well.

batusay July 2nd, 2012, 04:15 PM UP College of Medicine to survey source of leptos in Iloilo
ILOILO CITY, July 2 (PNA) – The University of the Philippines (UP) College of Medicine will conduct a survey on the animal vector of leptospirosis in Iloilo province to contain the increasing number of cases.
Iloilo provincial veterinarian Dr. Silvino Teodosio said the UP College of Medicine will conduct the survey in the coming days to determine what animal causes leptospirosis, that affected mostly Ilonggo farmers who everyday have to submerge their feet on the infected water on their farmlands.
“As of now, what we believe to be the primary source of leptospirosis is the rat,” Dr. Teodosio said.
He said UP will get blood samples from animals suspected to cause leptospirosis.
This as monitored leptospirosis cases in Iloilo province totaled 249 with 10 deaths from Jan. 1 to June 23. Of the cases, seven with one death are monitored by the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) from June 17-23.
But aside from the UP survey, the provincial veterinary office will also develop information, education and communication materials to be distributed to the public to increase their awareness and take the necessary precaution from the deadly disease. (PNA)

batusay July 2nd, 2012, 04:16 PM Iloilo City crime rate drops
ILOILO CITY, July 2 (PNA) – Crime incidence in the metropolis continues to dip compared to last year, according to the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO).
ICPO statistics for the whole month of June show a crime volume of 95 incidents, much lower than the 133 posted during the same period in 2011.
“We are pleased with this development for this shows that the anti-criminality measures of our policemen are paying off,” Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog said.
Index crimes recorded for June 2012 totaled only 60, compared to 105 recorded last year.
Theft topped the list of index crimes with 25 incidents, followed by physical injury, 19 and robbery came in third with 14.
Non-index crimes, on the other hand, reached 35 against 34 in June 2011.
In a recent interview, Sr. Supt. Marietto Valerio, ICPO director said, the city continued to be “generally peaceful”.
He said most crimes that were highlighted in the media happened in the province and not in the city.
“In fact, Iloilo City has the lowest crime incidence in the whole Western Visayas,” he said.
An intensified information gathering, networking with other law enforcement agencies, conduct of checkpoints, and active community involvement contributed a lot to the decline in crime volume, Valerio said. (PNA)

batusay July 2nd, 2012, 04:17 PM Ilonggos hold massive clean-up drive
ILOILO CITY, July 2 (PNA) –- Ilonggos from different walks of life led by Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor, Sr. and Mayor Arcadio Gorriceta held a massive clean-up drive against dengue in the municipality of Pavia Monday morning despite of a slight rainshower.
The clean-up drive was held after the usual Monday morning flag-raising ceremony in the municipal town hall of Pavia and a foot parade of the students and placard-bearing people.
Bayan Partylist Representative Teddy Casino, who is visiting Iloilo, also came to help in the activity. He pledged P100,000 as financial support to the province's campaign against.
Iloilo Gov. Defensor said this re-launching of the “Do Day” or massive clean- up against dengue is being done in order to emphasize the importance of properly disposing garbage which serves as breeding sites for mosquitoes.
The governor particularly appealed to the people to adopt the 4 o’clock habit of cleaning their surroundings.
According to the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) headed by Dr. Patricia Grace Trabado , dengue cases monitored from Jan. 1 to June 23 have now reached 735 with 13 deaths, or a rise of 315 percent from the same period of 2011.The number of dengue cases in 2011 were only 565 with 11 deaths.
Gov. Defensor called on all sectors, particularly the mayors of the 42 towns and one component city of Iloilo province to spearhead the simultaneous 'Do Day' because of fear that the 2010 dengue outbreak could be repeated. In 2010, Iloilo province experienced a dengue outbreak where there were 6,500 cases with 32 deaths monitored.
In response, Pavia Mayor Gorriceta rallied all Pavianhons – the municipal officials and employees, barangay captains and tanods, teachers and students, to join in the 'Do Day'.
Mayor Gorriceta also thanked Gov. Defensor for helping them address the problem on dengue by conducting the clean-up and providing three truckloads of sand and gravel for the manholes that serve as breeding sites.
Pavia, according to the data of IPHO, is second topmost municipality in terms of dengue with 74 cases and three deaths now. It is next to Dumangas where there are 77 cases and two deaths due to dengue.(PNA)

ILOILO CITY, July 2 (PNA) – The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) is looking at the complete installation of its agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) in the municipality of Balasan before the year ends.
Municipal Agrarian Reform Officer Joy Fuentes said they have completed 91 percent of the installation covering villages of Tingui-an, Maya, Ipil, Pani-an and Lawis.

Just recently, DAR officials led by Secretary Virgilio de los Reyes were in Balasan for the turnover of various support services to the agrarian reform communities (ARCs).
The projects included farm-to-market roads and a potable water system which have been envisioned by the beneficiaries more than 10 years ago.

batusay July 2nd, 2012, 04:22 PM WV Nutri Media Circle leads veggie planting, feeding of Leganes school children
ILOILO CITY, July 2 (PNA) – Officers and members of the Western Visayas Nutri Media Circle led today the vegetable gardening and feeding of Leganes school children with nutritious food.
The Nutri Media Circle is led by its president Elena Pabiona of Radyo ng Bayan together with National Nutrition Council (NNC) Program Coordinator for Region 6 Nona Tad-y and Leganes Mayor Enrique Rojas in conducting the activity that also heralds the opening of the 38th Nutrition Month celebration.
Tad-y said that the Nutri Media Circle has decided to conduct the activity to convey to school children the importance of growing and eating vegetables for their body nourishment.
These days, most children would like to go to fast food chains for their burgers and fries. But the Nutri Media Circle that has been formed through the encouragement of the NNC would like to transmit the information to children that they have to prefer eating veggies and other nutritious foods so to become healthy.
The Nutri Media Circle, aside from planting vegetables in the school garden, fed some school children with vegetable soup to inspire and showcase to others the importance of vegetables. (PNA)

batusay July 2nd, 2012, 04:23 PM P105M up for improvement of Iloilo Fish Port
ILOILO CITY, July 2 (PNA) – A P105-million fund is now available for the construction of a 200-meter breakwater at the Iloilo Fish Port in order to allow fishing vessels to moor even during inclement weather.
This was announced by Senator Franklin Drilon in today’s meeting of the Iloilo River Development Council (IRDC) as he stressed that the project would address the concern of fish boat owners.
The improvement of the breakwater is part of the efforts in the cleaning up of the Iloilo River. Drilon, during past meetings of the IRDC, had instructed that fishing vessels should no longer be allowed to anchor at the Muelle Loney area and instead at the fish port.
However, he was informed of the danger of berthing at the fish port during inclement weather due to the lack of breakwater to prevent the harbor from the impact of big waves.
The senator said that the money is already there and it will be subjected to bidding soon.
He likewise directed Public Works and Highways director Edilberto D. Tayao to coordinate with the officials of the Fish Port for the needed dredging in the area.
“For the next year’s budget I will allocate and see to it that the necessary funds are placed there so that we can rehabilitate the fish port and it becomes a source of livelihood and economic activity for Iloilo City because that is an abandoned place,” he assured.
Drilon said that there is still a need to put in additional funds to complete the 350-meter breakwater. (PNA)

batusay July 2nd, 2012, 04:23 PM Drilon says Iloilo’s multi-billion dam project is safe
ILOILO CITY, July 2 (PNA) - Senator Franklin Drilon today reiterated that the Jalaur River Multipurpose Project Stage II (JRMP II) is not situated on a fault line, dismissing fears of possible hazards in case of earthquakes.
The P11.2-billion dam, the biggest outside of Luzon, will be constructed in Barangay Agcalaga, Calinog. The reservoir will cover an area of 800 hectares with a depth of 100 meters, he said.
The senator cited that a fault certification has been issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) stating that the “site of the project is not prone to ground rupture brought about by the movement of active fault line.”
Further, the proposed main dam and reservoir is located 11 kilometers away from the nearest active fault line in the area which is West Panay Fault.
Drilon said that within the next 10 days a loan-agreement will be signed between the Government of Korea, Export-Import Bank and Government of the Philippines (GOP).
The Korean government through its Export-Import Bank’s Economic Cooperation Fund will extend P8.95 billion official development assistance while the GOP will have P2.2 billion as counterpart fund.
“This is the biggest official development assistance Korean has granted to the Philippines,” he said, adding that the loan is payable in 30 years with a 10-year grace period and an interest of .15 percent.
“The potential for eco-tourism is very great and this is something that will really improve the lives of the people here,” he stated.
Once completed, the project will irrigate some 32,000 hectares of rice land, provide 85,000 cubic meters of bulk water to Iloilo City and its neighboring towns and generate seven megawatts of hydropower.
During the construction stage, it will provide jobs to some 17, 000 Ilonggos.
The project was launched by President Benigno Aquino III during his visit here last month. (PNA)

July 2, 2012, 4:42pm
ILOILO CITY, Iloilo – Two Google Geo advocates in the Philippines are urging the update of user-generated maps all across Western Visayas.
“No one else knows your locality better than you,” Google Geo advocate Bernardo Arellano III told representatives of local government units (LGUs) during the Google mapUp in Iloilo City last June 30.
In partnership with Department of Tourism (DOT-6) and Smart Communications Inc., Arellano and Wayne Manuel introduced technical utilization of Google Map Maker, a user-generated internet application allowing individuals to add locations or update locations in a map.
The mapUp was initially aimed to update mapping of tourism sites, restaurants, hotels, bus terminals, seaports, airports, and shopping centers in the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental.
DOT-6 acting regional director Atty. Helen Catalbas said she considers Google Map to have a long-term socio-economic benefit for Western Visayas.
