I happened to read on a following blog.

I highly recommend Sand Bar Island Beach Resort in Concepcion when you have your trip to Iloilo because of the following reasons

1.) Closer to Nature- I’m not a fan of concrete structured lodgings, that’s why when I went to Sand Bar Island Beach Resort I love how everything was made almost entirely of bamboo and other wood products.

2.) Long Sandbar – I’m a fan of sandbars. There’s this awesome feeling when I take a long walk on sand bars. The feeling of the unobstructed wind. Waves crashing on your left and right. Knowing you can just take a dip whenever you want. Their sandbar is about 200 meter long

3.) Lowtide strolling – There’s an abundant formation of corals in the area. With abundant corals comes many different kinds of marine life. Actually the owner, Sonny Eusala, preserves the corals and other natural resources well within the vicinity of the resort. They also culture live clams that can be walked to during the low tide. Be careful when walking with the clams, do not insert any part of your body in them. They have strong muscles enough to crush your hand when they close.

4.) Less crowded- Unless you are unfortunate to be mixed with guests that are many in numbers, Sand Bar Island Beach Resort is actually very quiet. The nearest town would be on another island.

5.) Island Hopping Activity – I love Island Hopping! From here you can rent a boat to get to Agho Island, Malangabang Island and Tambalisa Island.

6.) Cook out – Cook outs makes you closer to the people around you because you work hard for your food. If it tastes good you get praised and if it tastes bad you all laugh at your mistake. In Sand Bar Island Beach Resort you don’t have a choice but to do cook outs. There are no restaurant nor stores inside Sand Bar Island Beach Resort so you’ll have to buy ingredients and toiletries in the town proper of Concepcion before riding on a boat. The market is just walking distance from the port.
Note:Sand Bar Island Beach Resort sells 12 oz and 1.5L softdrinks and 5 gallons of drinking water. Better if you pre-arrange this with the owner.

City eyes revival of traffic lights

By Lydia C. Pendon

ILOILO CITY – Major street junctions here and especially at the downtown area will soon have a modern traffic light system that will help in easing out traffic congestion, motorists and pedestrians.

City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog leads the campaign of a public private partnership (PPP) in solving the traffic problem by rehabilitation or reconstruction of traffic lights in about 10 major junctions.

Media mogul Gabby Lopez of ABS-CBN assured the city mayor of his assistance after paying a visit at the new cityhall building last August 9. Last week, Lopez informed Mabilog of possible funding for traffic lights from IBM Philippines.

Mabilog said the partnership assistance for the revival of traffic lights is a welcome development as top Manila-based businessmen and corporations started to look at Iloilo City as the possible next development area.

Early this month, the head of the Lopez Group of Companies, Chairman Oscar Lopez visited the new cityhall to see the development strides and initiatives taken for the rehabilitation of the Iloilo River.

Mabilog said the traffic lights will greatly help in putting order of traffic rules in city streets including discipline of the pedestrians.

River tributaries up for dredging

By Lydia C. Pendon

ILOILO CITY – Two Iloilo River tributaries are prioritized for dredging and clean-up once the P32 million Water Master dredging machine purchased by the Department of Public Works and Highways arrived here on September 25, 2012.

This was assured by city mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog after being informed of the development on the Dungon Creek and Calajunan Creek and the plan to dredge the creeks spanning more than 13 combined kilometers.

The Dungon Creek passes 13 city barangays mostly in Jaro district while the Calajunan Creek passes 3 barangays in Mandurriao and Arevalo areas in discharging into the Iloilo River.

However, both creeks have very low dissolved oxygen and very high coliform content.

According to the Environmental Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, fecal coliform concentration in both Dungon and Calajunan creeks has greater levels at present as compared to the previous years.

Mabilog said it was recommended during the Iloilo River Development Council (IRDC) meeting this month to draft an action plan regarding the river tributaries. This include continuous dredging operations to reduce the river stagnation, sustain regular clean-up of waterways by involving the community to reduce pollution, stricter implementation of the solid waste management program, crackdown on coliform contributors, and monitoring of waste water contribution from the public market in Jaro.

Last August 21, the rehabilitated Dungon Bridge was inaugurated and opened for public use. The bridge is a project of city Cong. Jerry P. Treñas, Mabilog and DPWH.

Similarly, some 1,000 families of informal settlers along the two creeks will be provided with relocation sites. Already under construction are houses for relocated families at the 5.6 hectare Lanit relocation site in Jaro and at the 3-hectare lot in Sooc, Arevalo.

Senator Franklin M. Drilon also assured financial assistance to the rehabilitation of Dungon Creek through a budget allocation in 2013. The city dumpsite in Calajunan will also be converted into a sanitary landfill.

City govt open to other technology other than sanitary landfill

ILOILO CITY, Aug. 23 (PNA) -- The city government is open to adopting alternative programs in addition to the sanitary landfill in Calajunan as part of its compliance with the Solid Waste Management Act.

Engr. Raul Gallo of the General Services Office (GSO) said the city government will convert a three-hectare portion of the dumpsite into a sanitary landfill.

The city government has already filed a loan with the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) for the P297 million fund needed for the construction of the sanitary landfill.

Gallo said the conversion is already armed with an engineering design, plan, estimates and feasibility study and they are just waiting for funds.

Supposedly, the city is eyeing the conversion of the entire 10 hectares into a sanitary landfill but Gallo said this was quite expensive thus they are entertaining the possibility of using other technologies such as the waste-to-energy.

“There are proponents for alternative programs,” he said.

The Calajunan dumpsite has an area of about 23 hectares. Other portions are also being utilized for the component of the sanitary landfill such as the material recovery facility (MRF) and weigh-bridge at the front portion.

Some seven hectares situated at the back portion of the dumpsite has not been utilized yet but they are planning to convert this into a Wedding Eco-Park. (PNA)

UPV hosts annual national convention of math teachers
Anna Razel L. Ramirez
Posted: 2012-08-23

The University of the Philippines Visayas through the Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics, College of Arts and Sciences hosted the Annual National Convention of the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP) -Tertiary Level on August 16-17, 2012 at the UPV Iloilo City Campus. The theme of the convention was “Paradigms in Mathematics Education for Global Competitiveness.”

The event convened together mathematics educators and researchers from around the country and abroad who discussed the current issues and trends in the teaching and assessment of mathematics learning.

Among the invited speakers were Dr. Joseph D. Novak of Cornell University and Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition; Dr. Mary Ann Huntley of Cornell University, USA; Dr. Yeap Ban Har of Singapore; Dr. Fidel R. Nemenzo of the University of the Philippines-Diliman; Dr. Lourdes C. Zamora of UPV; Fr. Domingo Rafael A. Alimajen, Jr. of St Vincent Ferrer Seminary; Dr. Gaudencio C. Petalcorin, Jr. of Father Saturnino Urios University; and Dr. Rebecca C. Tolentino of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.

In his message, UPV Chancellor Rommel Espinosa emphasized that mathematics education is a fundamental and significant component in empowering the Filipinos with life skills and knowledge to become globally competitive citizens of this country. He said that it is imperative that high quality mathematics education is instilled and embedded in the culture of our young generation to attain a globally competitive Philippines.

Sister Iluminada Coronel, President of the MTAP urged the government to implement programs that would develop the esteem of our teachers to help them regain their love of the profession. She also encouraged teachers to train their students to do basic research and for these students to get involved in math investigation.

Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog of Iloilo City welcomed the participants to Iloilo City. He stressed the role of mathematics in our everyday lives as well as its importance in the upliftment of society. Iloilo Province Governor Arthur Defensor, Sr. underscored the value of teaching as the noblest and most fulfilling profession. He also cited the many wonders of this world that were discovered because of mathematicians. (With sources from Prof. Lindley Kent Faina)

(PNA)
Link (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=&nid=2&rid=448922)

i remember long time ago during PSME Iloilo Chapter convention, i met a fellow (actually senior among us na new members pa lang by that time) and we discussed something about "ZERO WASTE MANAGEMENT" project he's proposing to the city Government (si Mansing Malabor pa to ang Mayor)...kanami sadtu sang concept nya and very viable katama ka project. Sadly though, I never had a chance to met with him again since kalayu na sang ubra ko from ILOILO by then. I still remember hambal nya sadtu nga biskan baklun pa ang basura nga i deliver sa "planta" very feasible pa rin ang project. so since there is still these issue among the existing landfill sa Calajunan, waay gali to ma-materialize proposal nya.

Sanitary landfill would be the practical way of disposing our waste in an orderly manner - but it will never be the long time solution for our growing waste/garbage to be disposed of every day. Growing population will equate to our growing garbage.

However, if the people, nor the government is proactive in these issue, green and productive ILOILO will be at hand. New technology encourages recycling and that all products are reused. Organic waste will be converted into fertilizer and so on. Instead of being wastes, those "garbage" as we thought are bucks. "May pera sa basura 'ika nga". Any trash sent to landfills will be minimal. :)

Police to secure Iloilo River esplanade 24/7

ILOILO CITY, Aug. 24 (PNA) -- The Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) will be securing 24/7 the newly-opened Iloilo River Esplanade against all forms of abuse.

City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the city police will strictly observe curfew hours, and the area will be opened to the general public from 4:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Mabilog stressed that from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m., only policemen will be allowed inside. He said the ICPO has already detailed one police team to monitor the area against lawless elements.

He said the project has yet to be turned over to the city government and he is still waiting further announcement from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH-6).

“The project was donated to us through Senator Franklin Drilon so we have to take care of the facility against any form of abuse,” Mabilog said.

The Iloilo Esplanade, he said, is exclusively for jogging, walking and other physical exercises. Also, all types of vehicles including motorcycles, bikes, and skate boards are banned.

Mabilog said he doesn’t want a repeat of last year’s incident wherein a motorbike rider bumped a jogger.

Ambulant vendors are also banned from selling food stuff, so he advised visitors to bring their own food but should observe proper waste disposal to maintain the area’s cleanliness.

Mabilog, however, said vendors selling outside or at the entrance of the esplanade are welcome.

The mayor said existing ordinances such as no- smoking, and no-littering should be strictly observed. (PNA)

Iloilo City poised to take off as one of country’s leading cities

ILOILO CITY, Aug 24 (PNA) -- Iloilo City is now positioning itself to become one of the country’s leading cities even as giant firms here affirmed their continuous support to the goal coupled with the aspiration of seeing bigger investments coming into the city.

Arthur N. Aguilar, president of the Global Business Power Corp. (GBPC), which gave this city its first taste of a billion-peso investment, said that Iloilo is in a "super take off stage."

He said that this local government unit has very rare attributes combined with the direction given by the political leadership under Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.

Iloilo has a first class international airport, world class deep sea harbor, excellent universities, conducive peace and order situation and enlightened, progressive, business friendly and dynamic city administration, Aguilar said who spoke in behalf of the 40 taxpayers that were given recognition Thursday evening.

Iloilo’s airport is all set to welcome international flights in November. Meanwhile, the deep sea harbor for centuries has been a witness to trade and commerce is naturally endowed as it is protected by the Guimaras cove. It provides anchor for ships especially during bad weather.

Aguilar said that universities here have provided skilled manpower and managerial home-grown talent.

The city’s top taxpayers in real property and business taxes came from the power-related business. While they occupy the top posts, Aguilar said that they would be happy if they would slide down to the 10th or 11th spot.

“We would like to see that another 10 bigger investors, bigger taxpayers will soon show up. We will be very happy to go down,” he said.

City treasurer Katherine Tingson said that while taxpayers feel the impact of their taxes through the services being delivered by the government still it is but fitting that they be given recognition.

Recognizing top taxpayers is part of the diamond jubilee celebration of the city’s declaration as a Chartered City. (PNA)

For starters, you may try dropping by Mary Mart Mall or Atrium Mall. Just ask around, usually these cellphone technicians have small kiosk. Try to compare rates too and select those with better offer. HTH!

Taxpayers inspired to do business in Iloilo City
By Lydia C. Pendon

ILOILO CITY – Taxpayers here admitted as being inspired to do business in Iloilo City and pay properly their real property and business taxes due mainly to the dynamic leadership of city mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and vice mayor Jose Espinosa III.
In response to the awards received last Thursday, August 23 at the Days Hotel here, President Arthur Aguilar of Global Business Power Corp., the owner of Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC) and Panay Power Corp.

(PNA)

(PNA)

ICCC prof talks about ‘Math Anxiety’ in int’l research confab

ILOILO City Community College (ICCC) department head, Dr. Harold Cartagena presented his action research in the 2012 International Research Conference for Globalization and Sustainability with 255 participants at Sarabia Manor Hotel Aug. 14-16.

The paper is entitled “The Effect of MaSeCoRe (Mathography, Seminar in Math Anxiety, Constructivist Instruction, and Relaxation Techniques) on Students’ Math Anxiety” which Cartagena hoped to disseminate his findings and to serve as basis for future researches.

“Math Anxiety has been a problem of many students in any level. It serves as a strong barrier in achieving students’ full potential in mathematics. This problem must be addressed accordingly before it turns into a permanent block,” explained Cartagena.

“Presenting a paper is a rare opportunity. I took the privilege of sharing mine to help math teachers and researchers. I am grateful that participants appreciate my study that they are willing to replicate the same the research design in their respective areas,” Cartagena stressed.

A scholar of the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), Cartagena wishes to do his share in shaping a better future for ICCC students through scholarly works.

“The experience in this international conference is superb. You get to know giants in the world of research, inputs from different researches done locally and in abroad, and work on networking with other institutions. All these I offer to the ICCC family- colleague and students,” he shared.

DIAMOND JUBILEE BIG PARADE TODAY: 75th Iloilo City Charter Day culminates
By: Tara Yap

THE 75th Charter Day of Iloilo City culmination activities will kick off today with a Grand Diamond Jubilee civic parade starting at 8am.

More than 16,000 participants from City Hall, schools, government agencies, and the private sector are expected to participate in the parade that starts from Luna St. in La Paz district and will end at the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand where the famous Dinagyang Festival will perform.

Another highlight of the activity is the Golden Salakot Award in honor of seven outstanding Ilonggos in a ceremony dubbed as the Diamond Jubilee Appreciation Night.

To be awarded are Ilonggo Senator Franklin Drilon, Edgar “Injap” Sia II, Rogelio Florete Sr., Jose “Pepe” Layson, Felix Tiu, and Perla Zulueta.

On August 26, musical group The Platters will perform a concert at Rose Memorial Auditorium of Central Philippine University (CPU).

A job fair will also be held at Gaisano City.

Major streets in La Paz district and City Proper will be closed during the duration of the parade.

Iloilo was reinstated as a city on August 25, 1937 by virtue of Commonwealth Act No.158 during the American period.

Iloilo was initially elevated into a city by the Queen Regent of Spain in October 1889 and a city government was established the following year. However, all cities with the exception of Manila were downgraded into towns when the Americans colonized the Philippines.

“We are enjoining everyone to celebrate our Diamond Jubilee Charter Day. This affair is part of our identity and pride as Ilonggos,” stressed Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog.

The mayor expects that this year’s participants are expected to match or even surpass last year’s 16,000 attendance.

Adding sights and sounds to the parade are various drum and bugle corps from city schools.

Mabilog first institutionalized the Charter Day celebration when he became mayor in 2010.

“As we commemorate the Diamond Jubilee, we are presented with many possibilities and opportunities. We get support for our infra projects, recognition for our social programs and favorable citation for good governance,” stressed City Tourism Officer Ben Jimena who oversees the celebration program.

“Major property developers have laid out ground works for mega-constructions and airline companies are scheduling international connections before the yearend. All these make Iloilo City an interesting and exciting place,” he exclaimed.

“What could further bolster interest on Iloilo City are stories that connect it with history, make it relevant with culture, and underscore its social significance. The tales make the imagery more colorful, more attractive, and more interesting,” said Jimena.

“The big events showcase the positive things about our way of life, our history and heritage, our festivals and foods, our people and places – these are intended to underscore the many facets of urbanization of Iloilo City,” he added.

The events include environment, culture and the arts, civil service, tourism, education, medical, sports, business, religious, and city concerns in a fusion of colors, sights, sounds and stories of Ilonggos’ rich heritage and cultural excellence. (with reports from JVF)

This two-day event will showcase the availability, high quality, and versatility of U.S. foods and beverages through all-day samplings, live cooking demonstrations such as “Chocolate Madness” and “Spuds on Parade” by top chefs, product showcases, and a cocktail networking reception.

Those invited to attend include hoteliers, restaurateurs, café and bar owners, food caterers, supermarket and convenience store owners, food consultants, and food manufacturers in Iloilo, Bacolod, Cebu, Aklan and other nearby provinces. The event is organized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Embassy in partnership with the California Milk Advisory Board, the U.S. Potato Board, the Center for Culinary Arts, Manila and the Days Hotel in Iloilo.

MAYOR JED ANNOUNCES LOWER POWER RATES FOR AUGUST

Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog announced today, August 25, the Panay Electric Company (PECO) will be reducing their rates by another P0.47 per kilowatt hour during the August billings.
Mayor Jed said PECO sent him a text message informing him of the reduction in August consumer billings, and the cut coincided with Iloilo City's 75th Charter Day Diamond Jubilee celebration today.
The Mayor welcomed the rerduction, and noted that PECO's current rate is now pegged at P11.10 per kilowatt hour.

I would like to invite you to be part of the 15th National Ayala Young Leaders Congress. It is a gathering of 80 most promising student leaders in the country to talk about servant leadership. This is open for college students on their 3rd year (in a 4-year course), 4th year (in a 5-year course) and I think they also consider 2nd year (in a 3-year + apprenticeship for maritime schools). Please visit your Office of Student Affairs for more details. You may also visit www.ayalayoungleaders.ph to learn more about the congress.

Consistency in excellence, it cant be disputed.
Top schools are in Iloilo are just normalcy.
Call me creep but it is what it is.
Even some fwends from the other side are schooled here.
but unfortunately going back to their ways and place,
all norture went south and nature took the wheel.

always put to heart Virtue and Science(Virtus et Scientia) and walk with it.
but unfortunately they chose to live by the opposite..Concupiscence and Ignorance.

On a lighter note:
I hope our new professionals would serve their countrymen first and go somewhere greenier later.

Even if I like to destroy the Grandstand ASAP.
Before the clamor for the destruction of the Freedom Grandstand go snowballin, we should put the new venue first as the tripwire....the Iloilo Convention Center comes to mind. :) but they should study how we can erect an arena in a government lot fronting Fort San Pedro drive Inn..that would be an iconic megaproject!

Once fully restored all the heritages building at calle real, it could be an ideal

place to hold street fashion week (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fashion_week) at night, iloilo as we know is known for its textile

industry long ago, hablon become a trademark for Iloilo, aside from that we

have renown ilonggos fashion designer.:) Iloilo can be alternative to manila

while that is well and good, profit margins for luxury cars are the highest across all sectors for the automobile industry. that high profit margin starts from the time a customer buys the car to the whole lifetime of the car in terms of its unique after-sales service. this means that a single bought bmw carrera for example, will have a good chance of bigger profit margins than two ordinary sedans that have been purchased-- especially in a philippine setting.

does that prove there is progress in your place? aber!? what is progress? it is an across-the-board elite and utilitarian advancement of society. the existence of that bmw dealership simply proves that there is growth trajectory in the consumption choices of your hacienderos, but not your average juan. growth and progress are two different things, especially, if the growth is skewed towards the rich.

Do you know what type of Aircons they'll be using? I hope its inverters...

^^
specifically for mid-high rise buildings, it is prefered to use central chilled water system, then FCU's na lng with VAV's to serve each level...but looking at the render, daw viewing deck ang sa taas so it might have no space for the package chiller or cooling tower :)

a package dx system could also be used utilizing the lower floor as mechanical room to house Package A/C unit and assy..then central ductworks (supply, return, fresh air) will serve thru mechanical chase(s). with SEER rating at the highest possible, these could be a proposal but not as good with Central ChW System that is more preferable...IMO :)
