dinabaw May 5th, 2007, 02:39 PM Workbook teaches kids about rainforests
By EDITH REGALADO
The Philippine Star
DAVAO CITY – The Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) has published a workbook aimed at teaching children about the environment, especially the rainforests.
The workbook entitled "The Tropical Rainforest and the People" was developed over five years for Grade 2 to 5 pupils.
Angelito Cereño, PEF officer-in-charge for community-based initiatives, cited the need for students to appreciate the importance of rainforests to the ecosystem.
Cereño said the workbook has been tested in six elementary schools in Mindanao and the results have been encouraging, especially since the island’s rainforests account for the most number of Philippine eagles sighted.
Cereño said children should be taught about the environment at an early age for them to better understand the importance of preserving it, particularly the rainforests, the eagle’s habitat.
The PEF is a non-profit organization based in this city that is focused on the preservation and conservation of the almost extinct Philippine eagle.
The Philippine eagle population is placed at 1,000, including those in captivity. The destruction of rainforests would lead to their extinction.
The PEF runs the Philippine Eagle Center in Barangay Malagos, Calinan district here, which houses 37 Philippine eagles.
The PEF is also involved in captive breeding of the eagles.

A bit of Davao History......
Citation to Accompany the Award of the
Distinguished Flying Cross
http://www.dfcsocietynw.com/images/rFisher-then.jpg
Captain Roland T. Fisher, Air Corps, United States Army. For extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight over Davao Gulf and Matina Airdrome, Philippine Islands, on 6 September 1944. Captain Fisher was the pilot of a B-24 aircraft on an armed night reconnaissance mission over this Japanese-held territory. Though picked up by a searchlight which tracked him accurately, he flew through the anti-aircraft fire and made an excellent bombing run over the airfield. As he was trying to escape the searchlights, three enemy night fighters came toward his plane and two of them attacked as they closed in. Hits from 20mm shell fire ruptured three bulkheads, cut the elevator control wires, destroyed the automatic flight control equipment, blew apart the electrical junction box, and put a large hole in the top of the fuselage. One of the fighters then rammed the underside of the airplane, tearing a ten-foot section off the side, destroying the radar spinner and cutting hydraulic lines. In spite of the damage, Captain Fisher succeeded in eluding the attackers by diving into a cloud with exceptional skill, brought the crew of his severely crippled aircraft through difficult weather back to his base for a successful landing. The outstanding ability, courage and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Fisher during this flight are worthy of the highest commendation

Coast Guard joins art reef
THE Philippine Coast Guard led by Commodore Edmund C. Tan joined the multi-sectoral project off the Island Garden City of Samal called the Independence Art Reef, donating the last of the eight ray-shaped modules of the concrete and steel artificial reef cum fish shelter.
Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage
Tan said they were encouraged to join the project after reading about it in Sun.Star Davao a few months back. Sun.Star Davao, through its editor in chief, has been supporting the project since its inception last year -- generating interest on the project's objectives, the project itself, and marine ecosystem conservation as well.
Tan hailed the project as a worthy one that embodies their mandate to protect the seas and work with the communities.
The last module was deployed last April 30, the eve of the start of the Ocean Month.
The project initiated by the Aquamarine Protection and Preservation Alliance (Appa), a loose organization of diver-volunteers in the region, was started on June 12, 2006, and designed to be completed in one year. A fish shelter and artificial reef in one, it is composed of eight modules that all together form an eight-rayed sun gleaned from the Philippine flag.
The first module was deployed on Independence Day last year with some pomp and lunch hosted by the Paradise Island Beach Resort. From then on, several other individual and groups have donated -- FerroSteel Corporation of businessman Jerry de Vera, International Committee of the Red Cross volunteer Karin Mathis, diver and Appa volunteer Maricar Pleños, the Naval Forces of Eastern Mindanao led by Commodore Ferdinand S. Golez, MinOil, and lastly the Philippine Coast Guard. Many more have indicated their intention to help, but with the completion of the eight rays, negotiations are being done to invite the donors to pool their materials instead for the centerpiece.
This early, the first reefs deployed in a sandy and coral rubble area southwest of the Paradise Island's boat jetty have already generated soft corals and housed resident fishes.
Appa, led by its president Petterson V. Galindez, is now planning looking forward to the capping ceremonies on June 12, which hopefully will include the deployment of the centerpiece -- a concrete artwork cum artificial reef by well-known sculptor Kublai Millan, who has been cajoled to make a small piece as his contribution to the project.
As had been pointed out by Island Garden City of Samal Administrator Cleto B. Gales Jr., the project shows how everyone from both the private and government sector can work together for a common cause through initiatives that require little in resources and a lot in terms of volunteerism.
Last week's modules were deployed with the help of Appa members, frogmen from the Philippine Coast Guard and the Philippine Navy, with the participation of instructors from the Philippine Military Academy.

dinabaw May 6th, 2007, 08:13 AM Samal Coastal clean-up today
THE Wind and Wave Davao is spearheading a coastal clean up today at the Malipano Island, infront of the Pearl Farm Beach Resort at the Island Garden City of Samal. It will be a scubasurero and a collection of the crown-of-thorns according to WAWD general manager Richard Agraba. The event, which is held in celebration of the Ocean Month, is also supported by the PROTECT Aware Foundation, Department of Tourism Region 11, Pearl Farm Beach Resort, and ABS-CBN Davao. “Scuba divers will be diving for garbage under the sea, while others will collect trash and the crown-of-thorns that has been killing our corals,” Agraba said. Among those joining are divers from WAWD and members of Bugsay Dabaw, SCOOP Davao, Beefit Gym, TRIMMOC and Maupiya. Participants will assemble at the Sta. Ana Wharf to Malipano Island at 7:30 a.m. Certificates will be given all the participants. WAWD has also been spearheading the similar monthly coastal clean-up and scubasurero event for the International Clean-up Day since 2004.

dinabaw May 6th, 2007, 08:31 AM Sincerity of Davao Candidates on Environment Questioned
DAVAO CITY — The question on the local politicians’ sincerity on environmental concern was again raised by the residents of the second district who attended the Green Vote 2007 candidates’ forum Friday, the last of the series of forums where local candidates were asked to lay-down their environmental agenda.
Ironically, two recipients of the infamous Kalabasa Awards, Councilors Danilo Dayanghirang and Diosdado Mahipus, signed the Green Vote covenant, agreeing to prioritize the agenda should they be put to office again.
Both Dayanghirang and Mahipus proclaimed themselves as environmentalists, something that the public doubted knowing how the two councilors became very vocal about their bias for business more than the environment.
“We are doubtful and at the same time dismayed over what we heard from them. They claim to being friends of the environment and the people when we know for a fact that they have been consistently blocking efforts to protect the environment as they protect the interest of the business sector,” said John Tagab of barangay Tigatto.
During his speech, Mahipus said he has always been one of those who were in the frontline of protecting the environment.
“Many times I have been criticized for my position on certain issues about environmental protection. I was the one who first stood against businesses who planned to establish in the aquifer,” Mahipus said.
Mahipus also admitted that he has always thought about a solution to the controversial aerial spraying ordinance other than stopping the practice.
“But because I am a supporter of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, I am also for the banning…I supported the ban. I will abide by the decision of Duterte because I am an advocate of democracy,” Mahipus said.
For this, Mahipus was called a Duterte lapdog.
“Doesn’t he have his own decision? Good that we have a mayor like Duterte whose concern for the people is unquestionable. But what if Duterte is someone who doesn’t have a heart for us and who doesn’t care for the environment?” a mother from barangay Agdao said.
Dayanghirang, on the other hand, said he has already read the 20-point agenda well and that he is agreeable to everything stated there including the implementation of the ordinance banning aerial spraying and the support for the expansion of diversified farms and not monoculture farms. Dayanghirang is also known for working as consultant to a banana company.
Cathy Gordo, coordinator of the Hugpong Dabaw, a network of social housing nongovernment organization and people’s organizations, said the statements of some of those who attended the forum were not believable.
“Some of them did not mean what they say. They were talking like real trapo (traditional politicians), as if they can fool the people into believing that they are good leaders,” Gordo said.
Bill Martin, president of Davao Federation of Subdivisions and Homeowners Association, Inc., said he was dissatisfied with what he has heard from the candidates.
“I would rather cast my votes to the neophytes than waste it to the trapo,” Martin said.
The other candidates who attended the last forum were councilors Arnulfo Cabling, Nenen Orcullo and neophyte candidates Mikee Aportadera and Doming Lopez.
Organizers of the event, however, said that it was still good that the candidates attended the forum and signed the covenant. They said that they are looking forward to their full support for the implementation of the environmental agenda

dinabaw May 6th, 2007, 03:43 PM SC to train judges on wildlife crimes
By Sandy Araneta
The Philippine Star 05/06/2007
For the first time in the country’s judicial history, judges and prosecutors will be given workshop training on handling cases of wildlife crime.
The Philippines has become an increasingly important source and transit point for wildlife crime in the ASEAN region, the Supreme Court said in a report posted on its website yesterday.
In 2005, six tons of elephant tusks from Africa were seized in the Manila harbor by the Bureau of Customs.
Recently, 2,300 high-value fish including live grouper, red snapper, and 359 endangered Napoleon wrasse were seized from a 30-man Chinese fishing boat near the Tubbataha Reef Natural Park’s South Atoll.
Both cases are still unresolved, signifying an urgent need for understanding on wildlife crime and prosecution, said the Philippine Judicial Academy (PHILJA).
In the report, the SC said PHILJA, its training school for justices, judges, court personnel, lawyers and aspirants to judicial posts, will host the first national "Judiciary Workshop on Wildlife Crime and Prosecution," in support of the ASEAN Wildlife Enforcement Network (ASEAN-WEN), at the PHILJA development center in Tagaytay City on May 10 to 11.
Taking part in the training are judges and prosecutors from areas identified by the government as wildlife crime hot spots such as Metro Manila and the provinces of Davao, Palawan, General Santos and Sarangani.
The workshop training will focus on prosecution, investigation, sharing of best practices, Philippine laws on wildlife crime, local and transnational cooperation with other agencies, and ASEAN-wide initiatives on the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty.
The workshop also aims to further develop and demonstrate the importance of an informed and aware judiciary in the prosecution of illegal wildlife traders.
It targets to guide the development of similar trainings to be conducted later on in Indonesia and Thailand under the ASEAN-WEN activities.
Among the speakers in the workshop will be from the United States Department of Justice, Supreme Court of Indonesia, US Agency for International Development, USAID Philippine Mission, Asian Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Network (AECEN), US Embassy, and the USAID Regional Environment Office (Bangkok).
The ASEAN will be represented by Tatik Hafidz, senior officer-in-charge for ASEAN cooperation in combating transnational crime.
Key officials from the PHILJA and the judiciary will also participate in the workshop.
They are Supreme Court Justice Antonio Eduardo Nachura, PHILJA Chancellor Ameurfina Melencio Herrera, former Solicitor General and currently University of Santo Tomas faculty of law dean and PHILJA remedial law department chairman Justice Alfredo Benipayo, and PHILJA constitutional law department chairman and Lyceum of the Philippines College of Law dean Pacifico Agabin.
Key officials from government agencies in the Philippines combating wildlife crime such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, National Anti-Environment Crime Task Force, National Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Customs will also attend.
The ASEAN-WEN is an inter-governmental initiative of the ASEAN to combat wildlife crime.
Two international organizations, TRAFFIC and Wildlife Alliance, via a cooperative partnership with USAID, are providing technical assistance to government agencies that are implementing ASEAN-WEN.
AECEN, which is supported by USAID, in turn, works closely with ASEAN-WEN by supporting its activities.

DavSur among top carrot producers
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
AMONG the five provinces in Davao Region, Davao del Sur was identified as one of the five top producers of carrots in the Philippines in 2006, according to the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS).
The BAS report said Davao del Sur is the fifth top carrot-producing province in the country with Benguet as leading producer, Cebu, as second, followed by Mt. Province and Negros Oriental.
Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage
Last year, the province contributed two percent to the total carrot production in the country. Benguet contributed 66 percent, while Cebu, Mt. Province, and Negros Oriental, contributed 12 percent, 9 percent, and 3 percent, respectively.
Other provinces in the country, on the other hand, contributed 8 percent to the volume of carrot production in the country last year
BAS said the country produced a total of 35,694 metric tons of carrots for the whole year of 2006.
It was learned that the country has been importing carrots from Japan, United States of America, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Belgium, China, and Germany.

davaoeagle May 7th, 2007, 12:19 PM NCCC-Mall to apply for ICT park accreditation, says exec
By Carmelito Q. Francisco
ANOTHER establishment is preparing its application for its information and communications technology park before the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA). Eriberto Barriga Jr., chair of the New City Commercial Center Public Relations Council, said the company is applying with the PEZA so the fourth floor of its mall in Matina could be converted into an ICT park. “We are still finalizing the documents,” Mr. Barriga told the Mindanao Times.
Barriga said the company decided to apply after some prospective locators asked the management whether the area was accredited as ICT park. It is easier to sell the place to prospective locators if it is already an ICT park, he added, pointing out that these businesses wanted to avail of incentives granted to locators in ICT park.
Barriga said the initial strategy of the management of the company was to invite the locators first and ask them about the specifications for their businesses. However, the locators would instead persuade the company to apply first for accreditation before they would consider locating at the mall. Several companies have already scouted the place, one of them willing to set up a call center with about 500 seats, Barriga added.
Councilor Peter Laviña, chair of the city council committee on trade and commerce, said the city government is willing to help businesses that wanted to invest in the formation of ICT parks. Laviña said the city government is also willing to provide incentives both to the ICT park and its locators. Last month, an official of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry said that two more companies have signified their intention of setting up ICT parks in the city, the Robinsons Land Inc. and the SM City Davao.
Andre Joseph Fournier, a trustee of the business group, said the application of the two companies will boost the move of making the city a hub of the ICT sector not just in Mindanao but in the country. Early this year, the PEZA approved the application of Damosa Land Inc. for the setting up of an ICT park in its property in Lanang.
Ricardo Floirendo, senior vice president of the company, said the approval has signaled the company to invest another P150 million for the development of the park as investors have already been waiting for the completion of the two buildings within the two-hectare property devoted to the park. Among those waiting for the completion of the buildings was Link2Support, a call center company which became the first locator of the park.
Gary Dumael, the call center’s operations manager, said the expansion of his company will even depend on the completion of the building. Mr. Dumael said the company wanted to expand its operations to 1,500 seats by the end of the year from 512 seats at present.

By Carmelito Q. Francisco
A COMPANY developing products for text messaging has started its plan to develop a software for automated teller machines. The company, the Netmarketing and Direct Corp., has also developed a software that can send about 15,000 messages for each sending process. Nestor Dignadice, a top official of the company, said the company is looking into creating “locally-made automated teller machines” that can be affordable to rural banks.
Dignadice said his software developers have started devoting their time to the development of the machine to help rural banks that cannot afford to set up automated teller machines bought from bigtime companies in Metro Manila. “We are transforming into software company,” said Dignadice, whose company started when it developed a vending machine for electronic load much like a payphone where one can use a coin. Its electronic loading system, which could be bought at P59,000, has been proliferating in several provinces of Central and Southern Mindanao, Dignadice said.
A businessman even bought the system and brought it to Cebu. He said his company is selling the latest software at P70,000 including the computer where it is installed as it attempted to sell the program to political parties willing to use the cellular phone industry in their campaigning. The latest customer that the company had was a party-list group which has used the software in its campaign activities.
He said the group has used the unlimited text messaging that mobile operators offer to their customers. With the use of the software, the party-list organization can send messages to all parts of the country at a lesser cost. Aside from supplying the group with the software and the computer, the company also included 150,000 numbers whose owners are the load distributors of the company, Dignadice said.
The company has load distributors in the Davao Region and in nearby provinces, he said. This new software has an upgrade version whose package includes a mobile banking system, he explained. Another version of the software is the money transfer employing the text messaging of mobile companies. But the most advanced version of the software, he said, is the electronic business system which is applicable to small business owners who want to monitor their businesses through their cellular phones, he added.
About three years ago, Dignadice left his job as a marketing officer of a multinational company to set up his company after telecommunications companies started their electronic loading systems. This prompted him to recruit the best programmers who could find and ask them to develop a platform that can dispense load electronically without any human intervention except from the one buying the load.
Dignadice explained that he came into the idea because, as a marketing person, he realized that dispensing cellular phone load truly through a machine like using a payphone is a gold mine. “It could be a big money,” he told the Mindanao Times.

MtApoStandard May 7th, 2007, 12:43 PM Repair of Damaged Davao Bridge to Be Completed in December
Posted on May. 7, 2007, at 9:48 am
DAVAO CITY — The 57-year-old Generoso Bridge I, more known as the Bankerohan Bridge, is scheduled for re-opening to traffic by Christmas.
The bridge was closed to traffic last April 12 because one of its posts collapsed. The bridge was built in 1946 and was opened in 1950. It should should have been replaced in 2000 because its life span is only 50 years, said Dimas Soguilon, director for Southern Mindanao of the Department of Public Works and Highways during a recent guesting in the television program “Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa.”
The damage caused heavy traffic because the city’s major routes from the south pass through the bridge. Rerouting was immediately done as only two lanes are usable from the previous four lanes.
According to Soguilon, the reconstruction and replacement of such a bridge normally takes two years. But City Hall wanted it finished in just eight months. The repair started immediately after the post collapsed.
“It will be finished in eight months, if we have the right contractors,” Soguilon said.
Under the existing law, according to Soguilon, there must be a public bidding before the construction of any national project starts. But he said the case of the Bankerohan Bridge is an exemption since it was an emergency situation. “In this case, negotiation is enough to push through with the project,” he said.
“We will ensure the safety of the public. The materials that would be used will undergo testing first,” Soguilon added.
The DPWH said it was still looking for the right contractors, especially those who can meet the target deadline.
The Generoso Bridge I’s capacity is only 15 tons. Its adjacent bridge, the Generoso II, has a capacity of 30 tons. The DPWH plans to upgrade Generoso I’s capacity to 30 tons. To complete the project, the local government needs 300 million pesos. “It is one of Malacañang’s priority projects,” Soguilon said. (Marilou M. Aguirre/davaotoday.com)

Dureza bares P18-B worth of super region projects
AT LEAST seven major infrastructure projects totaling P18 billion under President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's Mindanao super region strategy are now ready for taking, according to Presidential Peace Adviser Jesus Dureza.
At the 2nd Government Infrastructure Forum held last week at Edsa Shang-rila Hotel, Dureza presented projects that include roads, bridges, irrigation with power generation, and a food complex as having greater economic viability and with high impact on peace.
Dureza, also the development champion for Mindanao super region, said the projects are meant to provide much-needed livelihood opportunities and income sources particularly for families in the conflict-affected and poor communities.
"While standard economic measurements estimate positive dividends for these projects, their actual social and political benefits will simply outweigh the economic gains because of the beneficial impact on peace and security," he stressed.
Topping the list of projects is the Kabulnan-II Multipurpose Irrigation and Power Project located in the provinces of Sultan Kudarat and Maguindanao, which involves the construction of 80-meter high zoned earth-fill dam that would irrigate a 19,300-hectare service area.
The project will provide supplemental irrigation requirements for 11,000 hectares in the existing Kabulnan-I irrigation system during dry season, and generate 110-megawatts of hydro-electric power to help stabilize power supply in the area. An estimated 9,253 farming families are expected to benefit from this project.
Costing more than P12-billion, the Kabulnan-II Multipurpose Irrigation and Power Project is the largest under the Mindanao super region in terms of amount and is being proposed for funding through Official Development Assistance (ODA) and under Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) or Build-Transfer (BT) schemes.
Next on the list is the P2.6-billion Panguil Bay Bridge Project to connect and significantly cut travel time to cross Tubod, Lanao del Norte and Tangub, Misamis Occidental. One of the priority projects cited by the President in her State of the Nation Address (Sona) last year, the Panguil Bay Bridge Project is proposed for funding through BOT and will be implemented from 2008-2011.
Another proposed project is the Davao Food Exchange Complex, which will set-up a distribution center for consolidating, processing, packaging and storing agricultural products in Mindanao.
The P1-billion food complex project is proposed for financing through commercial loan, venture capital or ODA. The National Development Company (NDC), City Government of Davao and the Department of Trade and Industry XI shall partner in the implementation of this project, which is slated for implementation from 2007-2012.
Other projects in the list include the Saug River Multi-Purpose Project Phase I in New Corella in Davao del Norte; Sanga-Sanga-Lapid-Lapid-Saldang-Bato-Bato Road and Bridge Project in Tawi-Tawi; Surallah-Lake Sebu-Maitum Road Project in South Cotabato and Sarangani; Lower Sibuguey Valley Irrigation Project in Zamboanga Sibugay.

Did you know that strawberries are grown in Bukidnon? I didn’t used to know that, but I found out about 5 years ago! You can also find them in the mountainous Marilog District of Davao as well, which is near the border with Bukidnon. Yesterday, when we visited Father Franco in Buda, on the way home I saw a vendor selling strawberries along the roadside, and I kind of felt the urge for strawberries, so I stopped to buy some! I was kind of surprised to see how inexpensive they were. A large plastic bag of them (not sure of the weight, sorry) was just P50. We bought two!
I had forgotten about buying the berries until this morning when I saw my son eating some, and I grabbed a bowl of them immediately! It’s been a while since I’ve bought any strawberries. Generally speaking, you can’t get them down here in the City, you have to drive up into the mountains where the weather is cooler to buy them directly from the farmers. Most people think that the only place where they grow strawberries in the Philippines is in Baguio, but there are actually several areas of Mindanao where they are grown. Certainly in Bukidnon, also in Marilog and I’ve been told that strawberries are grown by Dole on Mt. Matutum as well!

dinabaw May 8th, 2007, 03:55 AM A great day in Buda
by Bob @ 8:31 am. Filed under People, Life in Mindanao
Yesterday, Feyma and I packed up the kids early in the morning and headed out of town! We had already made plans to go to Buda, which is right on the border of Davao City and Bukidnon Province. Our plan was to go up there and visit our friend, Italian Priest, Father Franco Uras. We just met Franco within this past month, but have already gone to visit him three times now. One thing we saw on previous visits was that Father Franco raises rabbits on his farm. He has probably close to 100 rabbits in the place. Well, I know that my kids are animal lovers, so I wanted them to go up and meet Father Franco and also to see the rabbits and other animals on the farm.
Another plan that I had for the day was to climb up the mountain there to go to the cross the Father Franco has built on top of the hill. I had never been up there before, and I wanted to accomplish the big climb! Most of the way up there are steps carved into the soil. I knew it was a long way up, but it was something I wanted to do. It was, though, quite muddy out there yesterday, following heavy rains on Saturday night.
We arrived in Buda around 9:30am and it was great to see Father Franco. Father is having some health problems right now, but he was up on his feet and as jovial as ever. If you are a religious person, say a prayer for the improved health of Father Franco! Anyway, being the gracious host that he is, Father Franco immediately broke out the coffee and served us a nice cup of coffee. I took the kids down through the mud to see the rabbits along with Feyma, and the kids just loved it. They had never seen so many rabbits in one place. There was some grass on top of the cages, and the kids took the cue and started feeding grass to the rabbits. This was a hit, of course.
After visiting the rabbits, Father Franco kept the kids busy by sending them to go fishing in his tilapia pond. The kids caught a few fish, but spent hours there angling for more of a catch! All the time, we were sitting there talking with Father Franco and enjoying his stories and jokes. You see, Father Franco is quite a joker! During the day, an Army priest, Father Jimmy stopped by to visit, and we got to know him too. Nice guy!
As it approached noontime, Father Franco informed us that he would be serving lunch to us, something which we certainly did not expect. Well, what a lunch it was! I can’t even remember how many courses there were! First, we feasted on three home made pizzas! With Father Franco’s special herb sauce. It was delicious! Three pizzas! We were already full. Just at that time, they brought out a huge garden fresh salad! It was made with lettuce, cucumbers, sun dried tomatoes, and the Father’s special tomatillos. I absolutely loved those tomatillos! They were sour when you bit into them, but then as you chewed them they turned sweet! I have never eaten anything like these, they were superb! The salad ingredients were just picked from the garden right before they made the salad too, so very fresh! Well, the meal was just getting started. Next course was rice and Father Franco’s special Lechon Manok (roasted chicken). Father had a special blend of herbs that had been grown in his garden that seasoned the chicken - I have to say that it was probably one of the most tasty chickens that I’ve ever eaten! Magnificent! After the chicken and rice, my niece started cleaning up all the dishes and such, but she was lightly scolded by Father Franco! He said that we didn’t have our pasta course yet! Ha ha… well, absolutely stuffed, the pasta arrived at the table, and a fresh tomato and tuna sauce to accompany the pasta and give it some flavor. Wow, delicious! Next course…. cappuccino with herb liqueur. Father had some special fennel liqueur that was delicious, and he blended that with the cappuccino. What a way to top off a great lunch.

Father Franco’s Place in Buda
A view of Father Franco’s place in Buda. I took this shot from halfway up the mountain where Father Franco has built a cross for worship. What a beautiful green place!
Well, it was already afternoon, and the mud was starting to dry up. Time to go conquer the mountain and see the cross! Well… that was the plan. Half way up, I decided that it was too much for me! Ha ha…. maybe it was the big meal… no actually, I just am not fit enough right now to climb all the way up there! Wow, it was a beautiful site, though, even half way up the mountain. My two boys quit when I did, but Feyma, my niece and daughter all made it all the way to the cross! Oh well, the boys all tired out on the way up, the girls all made it! That’s girl power, I guess! Congratulations to all the girls!
After coming down the hill, it was about time to head back to Davao. In the end, though, Father Franco gave a rabbit to the kids, but only after being reassured that they would take good care of the animal and not ignore it. The rabbit is sitting here in my office right now, eating. We are trying to litter box train the rabbit (it can be done, I’ve known others who have been able to accomplish this). The rabbit is a mixture of gray, brown and white! Very cute, and 2 months old. His name is Rudy!
Well, that wrapped up a great day in Buda, and a lot of great hospitality on the part of Father Franco!
I met Father Franco before , he is from Florence which he said it's Firenza :D .a very kind person .
btw Father Franco owns La Toscana and he also have a wrought-iron buisness in Marilog which he sustained for the benefit of his orphanage which is alsolocated in Marilog.

Golf: 'The yipps'
By Imee Garcia
WHAT is "the yipps?" A sudden case of the nerves, usually when putting. The yipps will cause you to push, pull, top or miss-hit your putt in an ugly and inaccurate way."
When the feeling of nervousness, anxiety, and stress arise, some people experience "the yipps." I can relate to that very well. Yup. The Yipps and I are golfing buddies. He is always around whenever I join tournaments.
The lack of confidence is another reason why we get "the yipps." If you're not sure about the line of putt, the pressure of the putt, worrying about making three putts, mr. yipps puts his hands over yours and makes you putt foolishly.
How do you avoid that...relax, think positive, trust your judgment....Trust your line of putt, trust your putting pressure. Do your proper routine and don't look up. And if you miss, oh well, that is why we are called "amateurs"! Anyway, we are not trying to win one million dollars, unlike in the PGA Tour. I should listen to my own advice. But, it's easier said than done! If you have a very bad case of "the yipps," you may need to take some stress medicine. Consult your doctor.
The Pomelo Tee of Ranchos Palos Verdes was very successful. Golfers from all over the country came to play. PSC Chairman, Hon. Butch Ramirez participated in the tournament. I've known him for a long time. We went to Darwin, Australia together so long ago, along with a bunch of athletes from all over Mindanao, to compete in the Arafura Games. I represented Davao City in the golf competition and he was the coach of the Ateneo de Davao University college basketball team at that time. I won 2nd runner up in the Arafura Games golf qualifying tournament for ladies, by the way, and got a little token for it.
Anyway, when I saw PSC Chairman Butch, on his way to his golf hole assignment, I didn't know whether I should greet him or how to greet him. I figured, his being so "high" up there already, very busy, very popular, he may not remember me anymore. But when he saw me, he got out of his golf car smiling, came over to me and gave me a big hug. I felt really nice. Despite his having a high position in government, he still is a very down to earth person. A Davaoeno, head of the Philippine Sports Commission, a simple smiling humble and friendly Butch Ramirez...aren't we all proud of him? It makes me love President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo even more, why, because she put our very own Butch Ramirez in a high position in government.
Our very own Congressman Boy Nograles holds a very high position as well. In the Philippine House of Representatives, may I remind you, that he is the Majority Leader...a Davaoeno, heading the Philippine Congress. We are so proud of you primo. Former governor Dolfo del Rosario is our President's adviser on New Government Centers...another Davaoeno placing Davao high in the political map of our country, continuing to make waves in Philippine politics.
Hopefully, in the near future, we will see more Davaoenos in the big leagues. Just like in golf, we've produced several great golfers like Cassius Casas, Tony Lascuna and Jay Bayron, competing against our country's best. In Philippine politics, watch out mga kababayan, Davao's hijos and hijas are moving into the national political arena and establishing ground. Not only are we famous for producing handsome men and beautiful women,( hihi! ) we also produce great athletes, excellent golfers, and best of all, great leaders.
This coming elections, vote Imee Garcia, representing the Golf Yipps Party List. Hehe.

dinabaw May 8th, 2007, 10:47 AM Slowing down climate change
Searing hot days and torrential rains at night. Never has the word climate change or global warming been more real these past few days especially in Davao City which used to enjoy fair weather all throughout the year. We have pushed the environment to its limits and we are seeing the results of mankind’s hundred of years of abuse, destruction and disregard of the wisdom of our elders on maintaining the circle of life. The rise of civilizations and the race towards supremacy exact a great toll on Earth which we are all paying today. In Bangkok last Friday, the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change presented its third report on suggestions to mitigate catastrophes as a result of the imminent global warming. The scientists said nations should act on this with urgency and with major investment in conservation and tapping available technologies. This includes cleaner energies, more energy-efficient buildings, preservation of forests and better urban planning so city dwellers generate less carbon dioxide in their daily travel. This will not come cheap. And this should be backed by government action and immense international cooperation to make it happen. The IPCC said reducing greenhouse gases to a relatively safe level -- one that will result in an average temperature increase of 2 to 4 degrees centigrade (about 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) by 2030 -- will require spending of at least 0.2 percent of the world's annual gross domestic product. At the maximum, it will require GDP spending of 3 percent, or about $1.8 trillion. This is the steep price we have to pay for the plunder of the environment and there is simply no hedging on this issue which threatens our very existence in this planet. We are aware that global warming will lead to severe water shortages, crop failures, flooding and other disasters. All of us, rich and poor nations, communities, families, individuals - should do our share to slow down climate change.

Pasa eyes Panabo swimmer
By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
PANABO City swimmer Emmanuel Plasabas, who captured two gold medals in the recent Palarong Pambansa in Koronadal City, has been included in the Philippine youth swimming team.
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) commissioner Leon Gonzalo "Binggoy" Montemayor said it was Philippine Amateur Swimming Association (Pasa) president Mark Joseph himself who informed him of the development.
"Mark Joseph told me he wants Plasabas in the national team. He told me the boy is a very good sprint swimmer," Montemayor said over lunch he hosted to Davao sportswriters at the New Ahfat Restaurant.
The Panabo talent is an ace breastroker having won the golds in secondary 100-meter and 200m of the said swimming event in the Koronadal meet.
Montemayor said another tanker, Koronadal's Nikita Dacera, also impressed Joseph.
He said the two tankers might join the national youth team now based at the Trace Aquatics Center in Los Baños, Laguna with Davao City's homegrown swimmers Jose Joaquin Gonzalez, Celina Gonzalez and Alyanna Malabanan.
The Davao swimmers, who are mainstays of the Coastland Davao Swim Team, are reportedly being groomed to compete in the 2012 London Olympics.
Plasabas, Dacera, Malabanan and the Gonzalezes will represent the country in the coming 30th Southeast Asian Age-Group Championship on June 1 to 3 in Jakarta, Indonesia after their sterling performances in the National Age-Group Swimming Championships at Trace last month.
Another CDST swimmer, Bea Marie Nazareno, who bagged one gold and two silvers in the Palaro, is also eyed to make it to the national youth team.

Davao: Great holiday hideaway
By Henrylito D. Tacio
SO YOU’VE heard all the talk about Davao and are raring to go there someday. Why not do it now? This provincial capital in Mindanao seems to offer every superlative an exhausted Asian urbanite could want in a holiday -- without the hassles of mass tourism.
"Davao is probably the least exposed of the country's urban areas," said an American tourist who came to the country to marry his girlfriend. "It's a great holiday hideaway, what with its lush greenery and exotic wild flora and fauna that contribute to its picturesque."
Because this tropical paradise possesses more of everything there is in a country, from enchanting scenery to natural resources, Davao is often considered "instant Philippines."
As the Davao City website puts it: "The air is fresh. The city is clean and green. There is real abundance of the freshest harvests from the land and sea.
To top it all, the quality of potable water is among the best in the world."
With a land area of 244,000 hectares, Davao is approximately 7.8 times the size of Cebu and three times that of the entire Metro Manila. It is a melting pot of more than million people, both indigenous and migrants now being acculturated into the mainstream of society, creating a unique cosmopolitan culture.
Davao is known for Mount Apo, the controversial durian, and the exotic "waling-waling." Mt. Apo is the country's highest peak (10,311 feet) and Southeast Asia's second highest. You may scale Mount Apo via the trails of Tamayong (in Calinan), Baracatan (in Toril), and Eden (also in Toril).
During the hike, you will see a display of nature at its best and primeval state: lush tropical forest dotted with hot and cold springs, hidden waterfalls cascading with a thunderous roar, mystical orchids and wild flowers, soul-refreshing symphonies of cicadas and God's other little creatures.
Durian is controversial because of its odor. Most people said that durian stinks. But to some, its fragrance can be compared to a perfume. "It smells like hell and tastes like heaven" is how some Westerners described the fruit.
In his dairy, the 19th-century British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace wrote that his journey to the East was worth it, "if only to taste of durian fruit."
Here's a timely tip to people visiting Davao and who would like to eat durian. After eating, put some water into the empty durian shell and wash your hands in it. This removes the smell. Try anything else -- detergents, deodorant, or whatever – the smell will remain just as pungent. On the other hand, a novice eating durian should consult an expert before opening the fruit. Otherwise, he would only mess things up by wounding it, or worse, hurting himself with the sharp spikes.
The exotic waling-waling (Vanda sanderiana) used to abound in the tropical forest of Mt. Apo and its surrounding areas.
"The waling-waling is almost extinct in the wildlife," said Dr. Domingo Madulid, the National Museum's senior botanist. "Rarer varieties of this plant can only be found in expensive nurseries."
While in Davao, you should not miss visiting the Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos. The country's national bird is "considered one of the largest and most powerful eagles in the world," said the Philippine Eagle Foundation, Inc, a private, non-profit and action-oriented organization dedicated to saving the Philippine eagle and its habitat. "Unfortunately, it is also one of the world's rarest and certainly among its most critically endangered vertebrate species."
One of the most anticipated festivals is the Kadayawan sa Dabaw, held during the month of August. It is a festival of thanksgiving of the people of Davao for the bountiful harvest of fruits and flowers.
"The Kadayawan festival is our answer to the Ati-atihan of Aklan, Dinagyang of lloilo, Sinulog of Cebu, Binirayan of Antique, Halaran of Capiz, and Maskarrah of Bacolod, Negros Occidental," a Davao journalist told this author.
During the Kadayawan celebration, customs and traditions of the native Dabawenyos are featured while various species of Davao's ornamental and agro-industrial products are exhibited in various parts of the city. One of the most anticipated events is the street dancing called "Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan."
Beaches and diving sites
Davao also has a number of beaches to offer. Times Beach, two kilometers from the city center, bustles with picnickers during Sundays and holidays. Historic Talomo Beach is best remembered as a landing site for Japanese and American forces during World War II.
Across the strait due east from the mainland is Samal, an unspoiled island ringed with secluded coves of white sand.
Ten minutes away via pumpboat from the Waterfront Insular Hotel is a white expanse of beach dotted with resorts such as Paradise Island Beach, coolly welcoming under the shade of Talisay trees.
For diving aficionados, Davao Gulf teems with underwater vistas. Some of the more popular sites are found at Ligid Island, Talicud Island, Mushroom Rock, Limao/Sunken Island, Pearl Farm and Isla Malipano.
Night life
A trip to Davao is not complete if you do not experience the city at night. Latest records at the Davao City Investment and Promotion Center show the city now has more than 50 entertainment establishments, including those in shopping malls and hotels in the city.
Among the most popular places are The Venue and Matina Town Square, which have become venues for both local and Manila-based performers.
Glorious food
Davao dining offers a variety of culinary delights that will excite even the most discriminating gourmet.
"The freshness of ingredients harvested from the sea and the farms provides a fulfilling taste that is distinctly Davao," said its website. After all, the city is known for its "inihaw" (grilled tuna) and "kinilaw" (local version of sashimi using tuna or blue marlin strips).
There is a variety of dining destinations to whet your appetite and suit your mood. There are restaurants offering a panoramic view of the Davao gulf.
Others prefer a wider perspective of the city by dining in an array of restaurants located on top of hills.
Delectable ala carte and smorgasbord at affordable prices can also be found in popular restaurants, hotels, and cafes all over the metropolis. Chinese, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Korean and other cuisines are included in the menu of specialty restaurants.

Council earmarks P85M, okays Shelter Code
By Grace L. Plata
THE City Council Tuesday passed on second reading the long-awaited Shelter Code of Davao City, earmarking P85 million for its initial implementation amid applause, tears, and congratulations from urban poor groups who attended the session.
Tuesday's session is the last one this month since the council session hall will be used for vote counting. Council sessions will resume in June after the canvassing.
The council also passed on second reading the ordinance establishing marine protected areas, which was being pushed by coastal barangays.
The Shelter Code seeks to address socialized housing concerns in the city with the creation of the Local Housing Board that will focus on the planning and assessment of the situation full-time.
The funding for this ordinance was a much-debated point as the original proposal of the committee on housing, rural and urban development chaired by Councilor Ricardo Cabling was P100 million.
This was opposed by some of the councilors including finance committee chair Councilor Bonifacio Militar who said the city may not yet afford that amount with all the ongoing projects it is undertaking and the concerns it has to attend to.
However, the council has come to a consensus to lower it to P85 million, which includes the cost of basic services that will be made available in the relocation areas.
"The city will also get help from developers who will contribute to the city's socialized housing program in cash or in kind," Cabling said.
This is under the housing balance requirement that developers have to comply with in order to get permits.
Alsons Land Development already donated to the city, 20 hectares in Lasang and according to Cabling, more developers have showed interest in doing so during the committee hearings for the Shelter Code.
The urban poor who have relentlessly lobbied for the passage of the Shelter Code burst into applauses and tears Tuesday when the councilors with the exception of councilors Emmmanuel Galicia Sr. and Victorio Advincula voted in favor of its passage.
Any ordinance passing second reading is as good as approved as the third reading consists only of the reading of the ordinance title, thus the jubilation of the urban poor groups present Tuesday.
According to Mindanao Land Foundation Executive Director Dolly Pascua, incorporating the social dimension into the Shelter Code has somehow fine-tuned it and thus did not stop at merely setting up the Housing Board.
Councilor Angela Librado-Trinidad raised this amendment. She deemed it necessary to provide the means for social integration in the relocation areas such as schools, chapel, and clinics as well as other basic services like access to electricity and water.
Pascua said the P85 million start-up fund for the project is also acceptable to the people.
"With the comprehensive shelter planning, the Housing Board will be able to project that actual cost of the project making it possible to get more funding in the long run should the city see it fit," Pascua said, explaining why the urban poor sector has agreed with the final version of the code.
At the end of the session, councilors were seen shaking hands with the members of the urban poor organizations who flocked to the council as show of force.
The other important legislation passed Tuesday is the establishment of marine protected areas (MPA) in Bunawan where whale sharks are regularly sighted, Punta Dumalag in Matina Aplaya where hawksbill turtles continue to nest, and Agdao Centro, which has been identified as still lush in fish and corals.
"The City Council has passed an important ordinance, which ensures the sustainability of marine resources in the city. This is a bright hope not only for the city's fisherfolks but those of us who rely on fish for our daily diet," said Councilor Leonardo Avila III, chair of the committee on environment and natural resources and proponent of the MPA ordinance.
The MPA ordinance seeks to protect breeding areas of marine life to ensure continual reproduction without disturbance.

I hope this ordinace will end informal settlers in Davao and the existing slums will be vacated and transferred to urban settlements.
dinabaw May 9th, 2007, 03:50 AM Back in most livable city Davao
May 8th, 2007
I’m back in Davao City, probably still the most livable among Philippine cities.
After the trip to Surigao del Sur, I took a week-long work leave and spent time with family in beautiful and relaxing Malaybalay City in Bukidnon.
As a reporter I couldn’t break free, however, from reading the papers, checking mails and even actually interviewing people, especially on the upcoming elections.
Our humble city of Malaybalay is beautiful, but it pales in Davao’s beauty and energy. I’ve been hopping from Malaybalay and Davao cities since 2004.
Anyway, I did a lot of work also while being physically away from work.
The highlight was really a HIGHLIGHT. I was able to interview the controversial former elections commissioner Virgillio Garcillano in his residence in Baungon, Bukidnon. Our editor, Carol Arguillas and video chief Froilan Gallardo asked me to join them in the interview, which lasted up to past 12 midnight!
Anyway, I also had a chance to work back in my favorite communities in Bukidnon, revisiting old friends. I found myself in the outskirts of Central Mindanao University in Musuan, Maramag town where I met Fr. Dan Paciente who is in-charge of NAMFREL and PPCRV in the province.
Up to late evening later on Sunday, I was in a countryside chapel interviewing workers of BUSCO Sugar Mill in Butong, Quezon town. Pads was very generous to let me hitchhike in his Mitsubishi Adventure as he met with members of an Agrarian Reform Community in the area.
More of the stories tomorrow, it was a a long trip we took today and the first thing I thought of after disembarking Mindawind was to grab a sleep (and post this thereafter.)
I think being back in Davao means being back to center to write the stories and share the experiences. Yabag!

Davao bakery succeeds in franchising business
Davao City — Who would have thought a small local bakery could succeed in franchising? Now known as Panaderia in Manila and Cebu, this bakery, established in 1989 in Toril, a coastal community located 12 kilometers south of the city proper, was Mindanao’s franchising pioneer.
"Our first business was grains retail. We called it Lily’s Grains Shop. But we encountered so many problems and we decided to go into another business. Because I have a sibling who has a bakery, I decided to open up a bakery," said Samuel Abrenilla, owner of Panaderia.
With the help of his brother, Mr. Abrenilla built his new enterprise. "My brother assigned a master baker who could help me in my newly found business. I told the master baker that I wanted the bread hot and delicious," he added.
To assure the customers that the bread was clean, Mr. Abrenilla decided to set up a working area all in glass so that "the people would see how the bread was made," he said.
Between 1989 and 1999, Panaderia was able to build seven branches all over the city. In 2000, Panaderia went into franchising thinking that the system will help his small business grow. That same year, Mr. Abrenilla conceptualized a tagline that would perfectly describe his business — "It’s not just another bakeshop in the corner."
In 2001, a franchisee opened a shop in Cebu, while another built an outlet in Manila. In the wake of this development, Mr. Abrenilla opted to change his tagline into a more positive and catchy sound. Up to now, the bakeshop bears the phrase "More than just a bakeshop." The branch in Manila was eventually bought out by the franchisee since he wanted the business to be "his own." The branch in Cebu City, meanwhile, increased to two.
In this city, Panaderia has nine shops, eight are company-owned and one is franchised.
Mr. Abrenilla said the company is adopting ’boutique strategy’ in one of his outlets. This, he explained, is a concept where a simple bakeshop is transformed into a classy refreshment parlor. "Right now, this is the latest innovation technique in the business where I am into. I want to be more competitive," he said.
While he noted business was smooth, it could be better if the government makes a few more reforms that would affect small entrepreneurs like him.
Mr. Abrenilla said one such measure is for the Department of Trade and Industry to put an intellectual property extension office in the city.
"This is one of the best ways for us to protect our name. We cannot prevent other competitors in establishing a business that may sound or look like what we have," he said. Mr. Abrenilla, also the president of the Mindanao Inventors Federation, Inc., said that many of their members would come to him and ask his assistance on patent application. He added that filing of application in Manila (where the intellectual property office is located) is very costly for them.
"If you go to Manila, you have to spend for fare and accommodation. But if there is an office in Davao, we can reduce our cost because we only have to pay the processing fee. And processing could even be a lot faster," he said.
Mr. Abrenilla said the biggest weapon towards attaining development is being true to the clients. Quality of ingredients, spic-and-span equipment, and hygienic process are just few of many measures applied in his enterprise.
"No matter how much we spend, we really don’t care as long as we give value to our products. We always make sure that we use first-class ingredients to have that distinct Panaderia taste that we offer... Actually, we alter the common taste of bread to make it more enticing to the customers," he said.
Mr. Abrenilla assures his patrons that Panaderia will maintain its image. "We maintain that quality. We keep up with our image. We keep rules and regulations that govern our workers," he said.
With the good practices being adopted by the bakeshop, it was picked as the National Shoppers’ Choice in 2004 and 2005. It even received a distinction tagged as the 2004 Philippine Marketing Excellence Awards.
Despite the success that he is presently reaping, Mr. Abrenilla still doesn’t feel fulfilled since there is still room for improvement. "Success is relative. In a certain level, I am successful but it’s not yet ultimate. This business is a journey, you keep on moving forward," he said.

davaoeagle May 9th, 2007, 08:31 AM Filipino-Chinese Young Entrepreneurs Association donates to Chinatown project
By Josie San Pedro
During its induction ceremonies, the Davao Filipino-Chinese Young Entrepreneurs Association showed its support to the Davao Chinatown project by donating P300,000. This money will be used to construct arches in the Sta Ana Area which has been designated as the official Chinatown of Davao.
This project is spearheaded by the City government of Davao headed by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte in partnership with the Dabaw Kaisa. The Dabaw Kaisa is an organization of Filipino-Chinese dedicated to bridging the cultural gap between the Chinese and Filipinos for a stronger Philippine heritage.
During the same induction ceremony, the president Nelson Chua Tian Po and his wife donated another P100,000 for the same project. Both donations were received by Vice-Mayor Louie Bonguyan and Councilor Mabel Acosta (representing the Mayor) and Dr. Romeo R. Du, president of Dabaw Kaisa.
davaoeagle May 9th, 2007, 08:32 AM Divers urged: Join starfish collection in Samal Island
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-XI) together with the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Davao Reef Divers Club, Inc. invite all divers and snorkelers in Region XI to join in the collection of destructive Starfish known as the “crown of thorns” (Acanthaster planci) in the Island Garden City of Samal on May 12, 2007.
This starfish collection activity is pursuant to the memorandum of DENR Secretary Angelo T. Reyes on April 12, 2007 to control proliferation of starfish in the coral reefs around the Philippines. There was a warning about the possible outbreak of the Crown of Thorns (COTs) starfish in different parts of the country.
The known causes of this outbreak are rising temperature, increased nutrient run-off from human terrestrial systems, and associated reef ecosystems. The reef ecosystems increase the availability of food for the starfish larvae which later on becomes adult starfish, thus an increase in their population. Areas such as Mabini, Batangas, Apo Reef and Puerto Galera in Mindoro, Apo Island near Dumaguete, Roxas in Palawan, Bolinao in Lingayen Gulf and Kiamba, and Glan in Saranggani Bay have been identified as areas that are at risk. The (COTs) is a predator of coral reef.
It climbs unto the corals and extrude their stomach over them before digestive enzymes are released, absorbing the liquefied tissue. It grows to over a foot across and has 10 to 20 arms. Each crown of thorn can consume five to six square meters of coral annually. The best way to inhibit the excessive growth of their population is to harvest them by hand, especially in small areas.
Moreover, in support to the call for starfish collection, the Davao Reef Divers Club, Inc., together with the DENR’s Coastal Marine Management Division have collected a total of 2, 644 COTs on April 22, 2007 at the Coral Garden dive site, Barangay Dadatan, Talicud Island, Island Garden City of Samal. The group estimated that they covered about a kilometer stretch of the dive site and disclosed that the average staying time of each diver was one hour because of the huge number of COTs taken.
The DENR advises to use thongs upon harvesting the starfish, and placing them in a temporary container. This is because when the starfish’s long spines are accidentally touched or stepped on, it can prick and sting. The victim will experience great pain, nausea, and vomiting.
davaoeagle May 9th, 2007, 08:35 AM Davao judoka wins gold in Nationals
DAVAO CITY (MindaNews) –Fast-rising Davaoeño ace judoka Marlon Condes of Holy Cross of Davao College Judo Club won gold medal in the recently concluded 2007 National Judo Championships at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila. Condes, Davao Region PRISAA medalist, stamped his class over his tough contenders, including members of the national training pool, to clinch the gold in the men's half-heavy weight division.
The 20-year-old Condes, a third year Marine Transportation student, defeated a rated Zamboanga City bet in the finals to help Holy Cross Judo Club cop the gold medal in the event organized by Philippine Amateur Judo Association (PAJA), the country's governing body for the sport. "The school community is very proud of him. We also congratulate those who won silver and bronze medals," said Abraham Verdeprado, sports coordinator of the Holy Cross of Davao College.
The Holy Cross Judo Club under Mariano Barayuga also took home two silver and three bronze medals in the week-long event participated in by top class judokas nationwide. Davao Region PRISAA medalist Kristopher Rodio and Janina Garde fought hard but fell short to settle for silver medals in the men's middle weight and women's extra light weight division, respectively.
Garde lost to a national team standout in the finals. Claiming bronze medals after absorbing defeat in their final four matches were Charlot Valindez (women's light weight), Irish Joy Aseneta (women's extra light weight) and Cris Jason Gambong (men's heavy weight).
davaoeagle May 9th, 2007, 08:39 AM SKorean firm to open wood processing plant
By Carmelito Q. Francisco
A SOUTH KOREAN company will start operating its P3 million wood processing plant next month. Gil Dureza of the Board of Investments said the Woo Ho Corp., the South Korean company, will start its operation next month in its Tibungco processing plant for gmelina wood as the Davao Region is abundant with this kind of wood considering that this was among the trees grown in tree planting projects in the region.
“They (South Koreans) are shifting to wood packing materials from plastic packaging,” explained Dureza on the investment of the Korean company. The wood industry is among the eight industries that the government has been promoting as priority investment areas in the region.
About two years ago, wood industry leaders even protested when the national government tried to implement logging ban in the region, saying this would kill the industry. In a letter sent to then Environment secretary Michael Defensor, industry leaders said the total logging ban would affect private tree plantations because they would find it hard to sell their products as there were about 1,000 tree plantations in the region.
The letter also pointed out that the banana industry would even suffer as the ban would prevent pallet makers from producing about 80,000 pallet boards a month, the requirement of the banana industry. The industry is also exporting pallet boards to South Korea, Taiwan worth about $500,000 a month. Industry leaders, in that letter, said gmelina plantations in the region will start maturing by 2010.
Dureza said that the setting up of the wood processing plant in the region is a welcome development for the plantations. “They will have a ready market for their raw materials,” he said.
Another South Korean company, he said, has also applied with the Securities and Exchange Commission for its coco coir factory in Davao del Sur. However, he cannot remember the name of the company because the document has not yet reached his office.
Another company, the Good Morning Corp., is setting up a hotel at the Robinsons property in Buhangin. “The area is good because it is overlooking the Davao Gulf and one can see the sunrise,” Dureza told the Mindanao Times.
He said his office received several inquiries from South Korean companies during the first four months of the year, an indication that they are interested to invest in the region. “There were several inquiries. Some of them even paid me a visit and asked about some specific data about the region,” he said.
South Korea started having greater interest in investing in the Philippines when its leader, President Roh Moo-Hyun visited the country in December 2005 after President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo invited him. The visit resulted in several trade agreement and the entry of some South Korean companies, particularly those that went into investing in power production. In the Asean Tourism Summit last year here, the two countries also signed an agreement for cooperation in the tourism industry

Samal mango industry is improving: Durano
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
THE former president of the Mango Development Council in the Island Garden City of Samal Wednesday said the mango industry in the area is improving, claiming that Davao Region's mango products are better than those produced in other parts of the country.
"It is not true that we are not exporting our mango. In fact, we are the only region outside Manila that has the vapor heat treatment plant which is owned by Stanfilco. From here, our mango product goes directly to Japan," Pete Durano, former MDC president in Igacos, stressed during the Club 888 press forum, Wednesday.
Samal Island is among the top producers of mango in the region aside from Davao del Sur.
But Durano said even if the mango industry in Samal is improving, he claimed that the industry is presently experiencing some obstacles in its development.
"Prices of mango are not fixed, the prices are going up and down because of the prices of the chemicals and it really discourages us," Durano said, adding that to address the problem, mango production should be increased in order to sustain the demand for mango processed products.
"If you ship processed mango outside the country, it can last for a year or two, while kung fresh mango, maiwan ka lang ng eroplano, then that's the end of it," he said.
Durano is a mayoralty candidate in the Island Garden City of Samal. He said aside from mango, which has an improving demand outside the country, he is trying to promote tourism industry of the island city.

Divers train for Beijing
By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
A PHILIPPINE Sports Commission (PSC) official confirmed on Tuesday that the country's Task Force South East Asian (SEA) Games will appeal Thailand's scrapping of some events of the 24th edition of the biennial meet set in December.
PSC commissioner Leon Gonzalo "Binggoy" Montemayor, who is also a member of the Task Force SEA Games, confirmed this in a gathering with sportswriters.
He said Task Force SEA Games members Philippine Olympic Committee secretary-general Steve Hontiveros and deputy secretary-general Mark Joseph will fly to Thailand to make the appeal to Thai sports officials.
PSC commissioner Richie Garcia will also join the delegation to check out the quarters of the Filipino athletes, according to Montemayor, Some 30 former 2005 Philippines SEAG medalists were left out of the Thailand Games after 24 events were stricken off the list of disciplines.
Four categories in traditional boat racing, three in arnis and a couple of events in diving and billiards, apart from several other events or weight categories in wushu, shooting, bodybuilding, boxing and wrestling will not be included on the 24th SEAG roster.
Montemayor, however, assured that the Dabawenyos-laded RP diving team, which produced five gold medals in 2005, will continue to train even if the scrapping of the sport pushes through.
"The divers are not only preparing for the SEA Games but also the Olympics. With or without the Thailand Games, they will train in China for the Olympics," he added.
But the diving team suffered another blow as Chinese coach Zhang Dehu resigned recently, thus leaving the team at the mercy of Filipino coaches.
dinabaw May 10th, 2007, 04:32 AM Marine Protected Areas ordinance ironed out
By Rizalene P. Acac Published : 2007-05-09
THE city council has finally approved the Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) ordinance on second reading yesterday after going through several setbacks in the past sessions. Councilor Leonardo Avila III, chair of the committee on environment and natural resources, said while the legislation had several amendments, the essence of the law has been retained. “The formulation of the IRR will come one month after the effectivity of the ordinance. A working committee will be formed based on the E.O. of the mayor,” he said. In this case, he said the allocation for the MPA management body under the Office of the Mayor will be taken cared of. Avila said the removal of the MPA fund, which has been one of the issues under debate, is acceptable since the executive department already agreed to issue an executive order to formulate the implementing rules and regulations. The original provision particularly section 31 of the ordinance states that an initial budget of P3 million will be set aside for the implementation of the ordinance. However, Councilor Victorio Advincula and Bonifacio Militar both questioned the provision. During the April 25 session, Advincula said the executive and not the legislative has the authority to set the budget. Militar’s suggestion to abolish the fund was also accepted by the proponent. Another amendment which was adopted was the deletion of the sharing scheme between the local government; the barangay and the arresting officers. Section 33 which specifies the offenses and penalties in the MPAs states that the LGU should have 20 percent of the fines while the barangay should have 40 percent. The remaining 40 percent will be allotted for the incentives of the arresting officers. Militar said the arresting officers should not be given any award or remuneration because it is their duty to implement the law. To resolve the confusion on the proper authority to decide on violations, Avila also proposed for the establishment of an adjudication body. He said it will be composed of representatives from the City Prosecutor’s Office; City Legal Office, City Environment and Natural Resources Office and the City Mayor’s Office. Avila explained that if violators refuse to pay the fees required by the adjudicators then the city would file a criminal case in court. “With the passage of the ordinance, we could sustain our resources. The number of fishes will increase and their habitats will be protected,” he said. The ordinance declares Lasang-Bunawan, Punta Dumalag in Matina Aplaya and Centro Agdao as MPAs. The Lasang-Bunawan protected area has a total area of 415 hectares. Bunawan had several sightings of whale sharks. The Dumalag area that covers 27 hectares is the home of marine turtles. The Centro Agdao that covers 21 hectares has healthy coral reefs. The ordinance seeks to rehabilitate the critical habitats of marine species such as mangrove areas, seagrass beds, coral reefs and shorelines. It also aims to preserve the endangered species in the identified areas. Avila said the three areas only cover .2 percent of the allowable 10-15 percent marine protected areas. He said the Bago Aplaya, Sirawan, Binugao and Lizada areas are in the line-up to be declared marine protected areas.

dinabaw May 10th, 2007, 04:35 AM Shelter Code: Victory for the homeless
By Rizalene P. Acac Published : 2007-05-09
MEMBERS of urban poor groups went out of the session room of the city council triumphant as the Comprehensive Shelter Code was swiftly passed yesterday. According to Dolly B. Pascua, executive director of Mindanao Land Foundation (Minland) while the budget for the socialized housing programs was reduced, other provisions were introduced to enhance the legislation. She said the reduction of the P100 million budget to P85 million is quite reasonable. “It is acceptable for a start. Later on, the Comprehensive Shelter Planning will deliberate to ask for additional budget,” she said. Councilor Ricardo Arnolfo Cabling, chair of the Committee on Housing, Urban and Rural Settlements, explained that the budget would be sourced out from the real property tax collection. He is optimistic that the budget would be increased in the coming years. Pascua said they also salute the councilors for agreeing to the proposal of councilors Mabel Sunga-Acosta and Angela Librado-Trinidad that housing projects should also be complemented with basic services and other amenities. She said the councilors grasped the concept of putting up not just a dwelling place for the urban poor settlers but a livable community. During the deliberations, Acosta said the relocation sites should also have mini-markets, schools and health care facilities. Librado, on the other hand, also reinforced it by adding the livelihood component in the housing program strategies. Pascua said their thrust now is to conduct more capability building trainings for the peoples organizations so that they could ably represent the sector in the housing board. “The representatives of the urban poor should not only be well-meaning but should be able to contribute to policy formulation,” she said.

MtApoStandard May 10th, 2007, 07:03 AM Japanese company eyes city for software dev’t
By Carmelito Q. Francisco
Mindanao Times - 1 hour, 48 minutes ago
A JAPANESE company is finalizing its plan to set up a software company in the city, a Trade official said yesterday. Teololu Pasawa, head of the National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center, said officials of Sana Do, a Japan-based company that is into software development, visited the city last month and started inquiring about the requirements in setting up a software business. Pasawa said among the issues that the company officials asked him was how they could source workers for their company. “They, however, did not mention how many workers they need,” Pasawa told Business World, adding that he told them the region has a good supply of graduates who can handle software development. He said the company told him it is also partnering with a Manila-based company that is also owned by Japanese investors. He said company officials told him they are evaluating the prospects of setting up their software development company, but there is a good chance that they will put up their business without the next two months. Earlier, an official of a training center that is into providing its graduates with certification from Microsoft has partnered with a local company to prepare those who want to go into software development employment. Jaime Garchitorena, general manager of the Manila-based Edupro Inc., said foreign companies would only invest in the country particularly in software development if they can find sufficient number of professionals who are able to secure certification from top companies in the world. Garchitorena’s company has partnered with the Davao City-based iTechnologies Inc. and Microsoft in offering short-term courses on software development as graduates will be provided with certification from Microsoft upon completion of these courses. Garchitorena pointed out that the country should be able to assure the foreign companies that it can provide with the best minds in the industry it if wanted to lure more of them to invest. There is a need to assure the companies, he said, that there are a lot of professionals who can do the jobs that even if some of them leave, the projects do not get affected. The Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry has also partnered with the schools for them to enhance their curricula on information and communications technology. Andre Joseph Fournier, official of the business group, said some schools have agreed to look into how they can develop their curricula that would fit the need of the industries.

MtApoStandard May 10th, 2007, 07:08 AM PLDT offers wireless phone service in Davao remote areas
Wednesday, May 09 2007 @ 11:32 AM BST
Business
The Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) Company is now offering wireless telephone service in remote areas in Davao Region.
"We are still in the test run and we will prioritize remote areas in Davao, where landline connections are not available," Benjamin Gaite, senior manager of the PLDT and the head of the Davao Business Zone.
Gaite said they are targeting to introduce the product service, the PLDT Landline Plus, particularly in the Island Garden City of Samal and in Carmen in Davao del Norte.
"This will operate in places where cellsites of Smart are located. The service is also capable of text and voice services," he said.
But, Gaite said the texting capacity of the service will be fully operational in June this year.
Gaite said there are several advantages of the PLDT Landline Plus.
He said it is cheaper because a subscriber will only have to pay P499 monthly, easy to market and easy to activate.
"You can use the product within the radius of 1.5 kilometers," he said.
Gaite said despite the proliferation of mobile phones nowadays, the market acceptability of the product is very high.
"It is very accepted in the areas where we promoted it, it is a post-paid service but soon, we will introduce the pre-paid services," he said.
The product service was launched March this year. (PNA)

Construction firm opens showroom for high-end products
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
TO SHOWCASE its high-end products from Europe, the MMarble Construction opened Tuesday the 700-square-meter showroom beside its existing main office in Bajada, Davao City.
Kristine Ivy Colina, MMarble general manager, said the company at present has 18 branches all over Mindanao.
Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage
"The difference of this showroom from the existing MMarble in Bangkal (Davao City) is that it offers high-end products, all imported from Europe," she said.
Colina said with the opening of the showroom, people who love making their home more elegant will have the reason to visit MMarble.
"We expect that we could sell a lot of products kasi sa ngayon marami-rami na rin ang nagfo-focus na pagandahin pa lalo ang bahay nila (because, right now, there are a lot of people who focus on making their homes beautiful)," she said, adding that one of the reasons why they decided to open a showroom is that they believe that Davao City has a potential market.
In a separate interview, Bruce Chien, assistant vice president for sales and marketing of the Hocheng Philippines Corporation (HCG), and Mickey Tang, director of the Lazuli International, both product distributors of MMarble, are one in saying that it is the right time for them to introduce their products which are of good quality to the people of Davao.
"Our concept is we're trying to promote the high-end products made in Germany, Denmark, Spain, and Switzerland," Tang said.
davaoeagle May 10th, 2007, 08:44 AM South Korean firms to begin Davao operations soon
Wednesday, May 09 2007 @ 11:11 AM BST

The Board of Investment (BOI) announced that three South Korean firms will soon begin operating in the Davao Region.
BOI chief investment specialist Gil Dureza said these firms are wood processor Woo Ho Corp., hotel operator Good Morning Corporation and a coco coir company now applying with the Securities and Exchange Commission for its targeted operation in Davao del Sur.
He said such investments are among the fruits of trade relations between the Philippines and South Korea, the latter expressing more interest in investing in the Philippines after its leader, President Roh Moo-Hyun, visited the country in December 2005 upon President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's invitation.
During the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Tourism Summit in this city last year, both countries also signed an agreement on cooperation in the tourism industry.
Dureza said Woo Ho Corp. will start operating next month its PhP3 million gmelina wood processing plant in Tibungco, Davao City.
"South Koreans are shifting to wood packing materials from plastic packaging," he noted.
He said gmelina is available in the Davao region since this is among the species grown in tree planting projects there.
Industry leaders said Davao's gmelina trees will start maturing by 2010 and this will help boost performance of the wood industry, one of eight priority investments that the government is promoting in the region.
Dureza said the wood processing plant's operation will be a welcome development for gmelina plantation operators in Davao.
"They will have a ready market for their raw materials," he said.
He also said Good Morning Corp. is establishing a hotel at the Robinsons' property in Barangay Buhangin, Davao City.
"The area is good because it is overlooking Davao Gulf and one can see the sunrise from there," he said.
During this year's first four months, Dureza said his office received several queries from South Korean companies interested in investing in the Davao region.
"Some of them even visited me to ask specific data about the region," he said. (PNA)

Phtographer's note:
Balut Island and Sarangani Island is the southernmost municipality of Davao del Sur province and an hour away from nearest indonesian island. the island is rich with sangil culture but christians has blended in. The marine life is rich and so with the highlands. Accessibility is not convenient as big waves are perilous except in the months of march to may. It is more reachable via General Santos City.
This picture was taken at dawn, on our way back home after a wonderful overnight stay in the island, the people were so hospitable and Mayor Jerry Cawa accommodating. Border pass can be obtained from the mayor's office if one wishes to cross indonesia.

dinabaw May 11th, 2007, 05:57 AM Sarangani Nature Spot
1. Olaniban Island. A 16-hectare coconut filled island lying 1.5 nautical miles north of Patuco. Ringed about by fine, soft-to-the-sole sugary white sand. Privately owned and can be reached by pump boat.
2. Mabila Beach. A 60m x 8m or 480 square meter sandy beach southeast of the poblacion. It is a mere 25-minute walking distance or 5 minutes by pump boat. It is located southeast of the poblacion. Mabila Beach poses a sugary-brownish quality of fine sand above a knee-deep seabed or shoal during low tide. Presence of residential houses around west of it diminishes its aesthetic/PTDA value, for it can be easily littered with wrappers and copraless floatsome or debris. It is more recommended strictly for use domestically by Old Mabila residents. It is around 500 meters by 5 meters or 2,500 sq. m. only.
3. Huway Beach. It is around 4.0 kms. Southeast of Batuganding. Possessed of a soft but reddish sandy strip stretching around 700 meters long by 80 meters wide marine zone, this beach can be reached in 10 minutes by pump boat south of Barangay Batuganding.
4. Manando Beach. Lies 1 kilometer right of Patuco Cove entrance. Its corral and limed grained white sand beach of around 16,000 sq.m. plus its high accessibility from Sitio Buhangin (barangay proper of Patuco) has attracted a private entrepreneur to own this spot for his future profitable use. The seawater along this beach is crystal clear due to its corral and sandy bottom.
5. Sarangani Beach. Located west of Barangay Camalig, it has almost the same area as that of Huway Beach. It lies across the Poblacion and is 20 minutes away by pump boat.
6. Obas-Manaboy Beach. Located north of Patuco and around 1.0 km. across the Olaniban Island. It can be reached by 30 minutes ride (by pump boat) from Patuco. During low tide, it offers a wide span of knee-deep whitish soft sand floor. Presently it is still in the potential TDA category.
7. Baetiong Beach. Lies northwest of Barangay Tucal. It faces Sarangani Strait or Channel. It has a spread of around 3,200 sq. m. of black-grained sand facing a shallow but grassy bottom seawaters east of it. More accessible during high tide and hard to reach during low tide.
8. Mangahos Beach. Serves as the buffer strip of white sand in sitio Mangahos of Camalig. It can be reached by a pump boat from Laker by 30 minutes. Favorable to land during high tide. Reefs and corals are dreadful risk during low tide. It has an area of around 1,500 square meters.
9. Laker Beach. A mere 500 meters away north of Laker proper. It is a 10-minute ride by pump boat. It has a whitish soft-to the sole fine sand. It has an area of around 1,200 square meters.
10. Patuco Beach. Located 300 meters away from the right side entrance of Patuco Cove. It is only 8 minutes away by pump boat from Patuco proper or Buhangin. It has an area of around 8,000 square meters area.
11. Patuco Cove. Usually, it is the 1st entry point of passenger boat coming either from Gen. Santos City or from Malita, Don Marcelino, or Jose Abad Santos. Fishing boat make this their rendezvous corner before going out to high seas, or during their return trip for a brief respite during rough travel time. It serves as refuge to watercrafts during rough times over the channel. The area is potential for fish cages.
12. Cococrab Area. The area lies 11.5 kms. From Mabila Poblacion. The habitat is the surrounding cliffs and steep banks of Patuco Cove and Tumanao Cove. Cococrab is so called because it was observed by the residents themselves that it thrive most by eating coconut. This crab can husk and break the nut so that when cooked, its meat savors a though sautéed with a coconut milk. Its having dark-brownish hue and bronze-like at the tip of its ten long-jointed foot depicts of a weird crustacean which is very frightening to the first times. The crab which weighs as much as 5 kilos can climb a mangrove tree.
13. Tumanao Cove. Lies south of Patuco but part of Barangay Camahual. It has the same potentials with Patuco Cove.
14. Bolae Cove. A 45-hectare inlet and planned to be a natural aquarium to tropical fishes by the late Gevernor Nonito D. Llanos Sr. during his visit in the early 80’s. Suitable for Mari-culture. It lies 5.5 kms. From the Poblacion by watercraft. Forest trees sorround the area.
15. Underwater Cave. Can be explored by diving down through its underwater opening. One cannot describe the thrill of drum-like echoes reverberating inside the cave.
16. Pali Subterranean Cave. Located in Barangay Camalig and lies 5 kms. From and across the Poblacion. The cave lies below the present barangay site of Brgy. Camalig. No exploration has been done to confirm what’s inside the cave.
17. Sabang Hot Sulfur Spring. Located at the shoreline northeast of Barangay Lipol. Its bluish bubbling liquid fill to the brim. The ground aperture with a diameter of around 16 meters across. Its 80 degree centigrade temperature can easily dress chicken and also make the scraping of piglets for litson easy. A few meters away from its crater, where much heat has dissipated, local folks take their health spa, thus serving as their God-given dermatologist, for free.
18. Mountain Resort. Forested area of Gomtago, offers a promising and wholesome retreat with nature. Presently, it still remains a potential TDA. It is located in the midst of Barangay Gomtago. It can be reached by retracing the uphill trail starting from Sitio Tambulos southward but consistently winding and uphill.

Garcia: Golf and politics
By Imee Garcia
IT IS almost election time, and so I will be writing about golf and politics. Many of our politicians are golfers. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is an avid golfer. Former President Fidel Ramos is an avid golfer as well. Former President Marcos played golf. Former President Cory Aquino didn't play golf.
However, her family owns a golf course that is in Hacienda Luisita. Former President Estrada did not play golf. He has bad knees, so maybe that's one reason why he didn't play.
Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage
Conclusion: If you are a golfer, or if you own a golf course, then you can become President of the Philippines...(Of course I am only kidding!)
In the United States, out of the last 10 US presidents, nine have been golfers; only Jimmy Carter was not. And did you know that, according to an Internet site, President George W. Bush's first date with wife Laura was at a miniature golf course?
In the local scene, Mayor Rody Duterte plays golf. Vice Mayor Bonguyan plays golf. Former Mayor Ben de Guzman plays golf. Mayor Antalan of the Island Garden City of Samal plays golf. Congressman Boy Nograles also plays golf. Congressman Lopez plays golf as well. Several of our councilors are also golfers.
Conclusion: If you are a golfer, then you can become a councilor of Davao City. You can even be mayor. (Again, I am only kidding!)
It seems that for one to be involved with politics, one has to play golf. If you don't play golf, maybe you can become an actor. That way, you will have a fighting chance come election time. I am no actress. I have stage fright. But, I play golf, so I guess I am still qualified to run for office someday. (Hehe!)
Hay naku, if only that was the only basis for becoming a politician...It's in my blood, you know--politics. My grandfather was a former mayor in the 1950s, Mayor Leon Garcia Sr. My uncle, Leon Garcia Jr., was a ConCon Delegate. My uncle Nonoy Garcia and my Tito Dolfo del Rosario are both former congressmen. Tito Dolfo became a Cabinet member as well, and is, up to now, still very active in Philippine politics. And just in case you didn't know, former President Jose Patricio Garcia Laurel is my grandfather's first cousin.
My cousin, Congressman Vince Garcia, is the incumbent congressman in the 2nd district of Davao. My cousin, Vice Gov. Anthony del Rosario, is the incumbent vice governor for Davao del Norte. These relatives of mine, dedicating their lives to serve our people, from one generation to another, following my grandfather's footsteps.
This coming elections, please vote wisely. Golf, as well as popularity, is not and should not be the only basis for choosing the right candidates. Sincerity, Dedication, Loyalty, Honesty, and Love for our people MUST be considered. He must have the brains. He must be ma-prinsipyo and not be someone's puppet only. He must be someone who is willing to fight for you, who is willing to stand up for you. Consider his track record as well.
In the days to come, the election campaign will get more dirty. Quite frankly, it is very entertaining. Knowing us, Filipinos, we love chismis. Any juicy information that's out there is music to our ears.
But in the end, we know what's best for our nation. We need good leaders...correction...we need great leaders to guide us in this time of crisis. Speak your mind. Let what's in your heart be heard. Vote wisely on election day! And afterwards, let's play golf. See you on the fairways!

Singh: Golfer with a heart for Davao
HE IS based in Seattle, but this man's heart is for Davao City. So, it's no wonder Lucho Singh never stopped coming to Davao and spearheading projects to benefit the Dabawenyos.
The latest of which is the coming Lucho Singh Invitational Golf Tournament, a noble project that aims to raise funds for cancer victims through Amuma Cancer Support Group Foundation, Inc.
The 18-hole event scheduled to fire off July 8 at the scenic Apo Golf and Country Club was endorsed by no less than Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte and is gaining support from some individuals, specially Filipinos now based in the United States.
Singh, a close friend of Duterte and also the benefactor of Balay Dangupan, a shelter for abused children in the city, said he considers Davao as his second home.
"Davao City is my second residence and I have learned to love the people. I also have many friends from Davao who are down to earth and very helpful and who prayed for me during the days when I was undergoing treatment of my cancer," Singh said in an e-mail.
He specifically mentioned Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy and Duterte "and other special people in Davao together with the kids of Balay Dangupan.
After six months of looking for an organization to help him launched the golf invitational, Mr. Singh met the group of Amuma and talked to Father Albert Alejo and the members of the board.
"The group impressed me for reaching out to help others, and I have decided that Davao is the right place for me to continue helping cancer patients," said Singh, an adopted son of Davao.
At the same time, Singh also condoled with the family of the later Davao City Councilor Jesus A. Zozobrado. Zozobrado passed away last April 27 due to liver cancer and was laid to rest just recently.
Meanwhile, Singh announced that Bobby Leonor, his friend, is one of the hole sponsors and that he will also play in the event.
Apo View Hotel is the officials' hotel of the tournament, Singh also announced. (CRAM)

Audubon International certifies Malagos Resort as cooperative Santuary
Malagos Garden Resort host a rare collections of indigenous Philippine flora and fauna with several species of butterflies also thrive in its enclosed sanctuary area. With in its area, a birdspark has been built to ensconsed rescued and rehabilitated birds. The resort has an unpretentious amenities for quiet relaxation, catching up with one's reading, or satisfying one's aesthetic sense by looking at vari-colored plants and flowers so arranged with simplicity.
The landscape artist had used rooftops of shedhouses, trellises, fern trees and fences to support orchids and ornamentals creating an over-all harmony of quiet and relaxed ambience.
There is a waterfall – its presence a cooling effect – that seems to flow with a very slow movement of the waters down a man-made creek into a pond at the entrance of the resort.
An attention-getter are rows of orchids blooming profusely.
Just looking at the flowers for a few minutes in such a quiet atmosphere will draw one's attention to nature's power to create such a wonderful and marvelous harmony of colors.
The resort is definitely Filipino in concept. Even the materials used for the garden's infrastructure were carefully made from selected native materials.
The most striking feature of the resort is the garden occupying over half of the entire area and fully planted with native orchids and orchid hybrids coming from the Puentespina orchid laboratory.
"Our original concept is to make this garden a sanctuary fornative orchids, many of which are endangered" said Charita Puentespina, popularly known as Davao's waling-waling lady for having "returned back home" the waling-waling after almost a century ofneglect.
Puentespina was the first to successfully culture the waling-waling in 1985.
The once forested portion of Malagos, was part of the home of the waling-waling which disappeared due to neglect and habitat degradation.
Other amenities of the resort like the restaurant and the swimming pool were added last year.
The Garden resort is a jewel to the Puentespinas – a vision of a dream taking shape; an island haven providing an alternative to sands, beaches and the sun, said Bert Puentespina Sr.

Ady001 May 12th, 2007, 05:44 PM Hello guys. sorry for not posting too long in the Davao thread. I would like to tell everyone that I'll be gone from SSC and foruming for several months. I'll be flying from Davao to Manila in one week's time. I hope that Davao will continue to thrive. Upon my return, hopefully, the city will have its own greatness found.
Thank you for the time guys. Until then.

Davao's Barte, Santos clash for 18-u crown
By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
DAVAO City netters Ralph Kevin "RK" Barte and El Santo "Jok-Jok" Santos arranged a titular clash after ousting their foes in the boys 18-under semi-finals of the 6th Annual Toby's Philta Age-Group Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Manila Saturday.
Bangladesh international juniors champion Barte, who hails from S.I.R. Matina, thrashed Patrick Arevalo, 6-2, 6-1, while Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC) mainstay Santos whipped Michael Tamayo, 6-2, 6-2.
Barte earlier demolished Julian Lagman, 6-2, 6-1, even as Santos, a BIMP Eaga Games gold medalist, pulled off a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Kim Saraza in the quarter-finals.
Dabawenya Sandra Lagman bowed to Grace Rivero, 4-6, 3-6, in girls 16-under after losing to Sarah Lim, 0-6, 0-6.
Barte said in text messages to Sun.Star Davao Saturday, "Warag ika duha pa namong pagtagbo ni Jok-Jok. Ako nidaug sa una namong laban (I think it will be our second time to play against each other. I won in our fist clash)."
The Manila-based Barte, who is still seeking admission at the De La Salle University as a varsity scholar, said he could not take Santos lightly.
"Dili ko makaingon kung mapildi napud nako siya sa finals kay maayo man pud si Jok-Jok. Dili puwede makompyansa-an (I don't know if I can beat him again because he's also a very good player. I can't be complacent)," Barte added.
It can be recalled that Barte and Santos teamed up to give Davao City a gold medal in boys doubles in the Philippine National Youth Games Batang Pinoy Championships where the former also won the singles gold.

Art break
IT COULDN'T be called an art camp because it was just for one afternoon. And it wasn't even a workshop because everything just went as the children wanted, and so let's call it an art break.
More than 30 children with ages ranging from four to 12 were gathered for the art break at the Prayer Mountain of Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy recently for some art fun, a free art session with Sun.Star Davao editor in chief Stella A. Estremera who came with coloring sheets made by buddy artist Kublai Millan, drawing papers, crayons, pastels, water color, paints, and brushes, and her nephew Kenneth and niece Trish.
The coloring sheets showing different Filipino games were a big hit. That was before the children made a beeline for the wood construction sets.
Excited to form the figures in the cover, the children just went on to break the pieces apart and then... figure out how to put them all together as how the instruction graphics indicated how with cutters, glues, and sheer brute strength.
With so many parts strewn all over after the "breaking apart frenzy", it was mind-boggling to even put two pieces together. But the elder children did manage to help the younger ones along and thus made some airplanes, cars, and animals, which they painted afterward.
Several more dismantled parts lay in piles, too mixed up to build a single figure, which kept the guardians busy until dinnertime. Some of the elders were making up for the pieces they broke amid prodding from the young ones, others simply enjoyed the puzzle that the construction sets have become.
After dinner, it's time to break up. Although some of the children went on painting, others have opted to go out and play. For one brief afternoon, though they kept to their seats, drawing, painting, and solving a roomful of wooden jigsaw puzzles.

Philippines' property sector is red-hot!
Booming! Upsurge! On the radar screens! These were some of the key words and phrases, in a recent feature article on the Philippine property market by analysts and foreign investors.
On the front page of the Singapore's Straits Times Newspaper, the most popular broadsheet in the city-state, reporter Alistair Mcindoe analyzed the state of the Philippine property market. It was bullish and very encouraging. Here is the full text of his report.
The second city of Cebu is now fast establishing itself as an outsourcing centre, as are smaller cities like Iloilo and the pleasant university town of Dumaguete, all in the central Philippines. A decade ago, the Asian financial crisis put paid to the last major rally in the property market here.

davaoeagle May 15th, 2007, 06:24 AM Davao-based oil firm widens price range for proposed IPO
By JAMES A. LOYOLA
Davao-based oil firm Phoenix Petroleum Philippines Inc. has expanded the price range for its initial public offering to raise the maximum gross proceeds to P409.63 million from the original P359.97 million as the stock market rally continues.
Documents at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) showed that the firm is selling 36.25 million shares, consisting of 29 million new common shares and 7.25 million secondary shares to be sold by Udenna Corporation.
The shares will be sold a price range of P6.08 to P11.30 per share, up from the original range of P6.62 to P9.93 per share in its original application for registration filed with the SEC.
Phoenix said Udenna has also set aside 13.05 of its shares in Phoenix for purchase by the underwriter 30 days from the date of listing to cover over allotments. BDO Capital and Investment Corporation has been tapped to be the issue manager and lead underwriter.
The offer is slated to start on June 13 and will end on June 19, 2007 while all of the firm’s outstanding shares will be listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange’s second board on June 27.
Phoenix said funds raised through this offering are earmarked primarily for capital expenditures and increase in working capital.
"The company intends to establish terminal operations in other locations, expand its dealership network and its services as well as the necessary logistical requirements to support these activities," Phoenix said in its draft prospectus.
The firm intends to use proceeds of the IPO to open at least 30 new service stations this year and 15 more next year at a cost of P96.78 million pesos which includes tanks, pumps, signage, promotion and training and civil works.
It also plans to spend P257.28 million for its depot and logistic facilities incuding P120 million for one 10 million liter terminal facility each in 2007 and 2008 as well as a storage tank, lorry trucks, loading arm facility and other improvements.
davaoeagle May 15th, 2007, 06:31 AM Simon is week’s best cager
By Reuel Vidal
THE Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants, fighting to avoid elimination from the Talk N Text Philippine Basketball Association Fiesta Conference, shocked league-leading Barangay Ginebra, 117-105, at the Araneta Coliseum Sunday.
Peter June Simon came through with 31 markers to power the Giants to victory and in the process, won Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week honors.
Simon shredded the nets with his uncanny shooting. He converted two of two attempts from 3-point distance, made 11-of-16 two-point attempts and didn’t miss any of his three free throws.
The Giants started hot and overwhelmed Barangay Ginebra early. Purefoods hit at an impressive 64.3 percent clip from two-point distance and broke the game wide open right in the opening half. They actually shot better from the 3-point zone, converting 11-of-15 attempts for 73.3 percent.
“We badly needed that win because we’re fighting for survival,” said Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio. “Tinanggal ko ang pressure from our team. We’re not looking to reach the top two, not even the top five. We’re just looking to survive and avoid elimination. Our sights are now set on that.”
The Tender Juicy Giants snapped a three-game losing streak to hike their record to 5 wins and 10 losses and climb into eighth place ahead of Sta. Lucia (4-9) and Welcoat (3-10). The last-placed team will be eliminated after the double round robin eliminations.
Simon also came up with a team-high 22 points when Purefoods lost to the Coca-Cola Tigers, 77-80, last May 4.
He provides Purefoods with its much-needed third scoring option after prolific import Marquin Chandler and reigning Most Valuable Player James Yap.
