Buhangin Drive, Buhangin District, Davao City
Alsons Land Corporation
The flagship development of Aldevinco is the 62-hectare Ladislawa Garden Village (LGV). It was aptly named after the family matriarch, Mrs. Ladislawa I. Alcantara, who is well known in the community for her love for flowers and plants.
This first-class development saw its maiden opening in 1974 and was re-launched in 1991.It boasted of being the only themed residential subdivision in Davao City at that time, enclosed in concrete perimeter fence. Aside from the generous 2.2-hectare open area that features country club facilities, LGV is a subdivision that offers its owners a lifestyle known to a few... beauty, security and exclusivity. To date, 99% of its lots are sold.
LADISLAWA TOWNHOUSES
Aldevinco also developed a complementary array of townhouses within LGV, each kind blending with the themed subdivision. ZINNIA TOWNHOMES, located along Zinnia Drive, is a 1-hectare development of 38 high quality, ready-built townhouses. This project was the first townhomes project of its kind introduced in the city. Another townhomes project is the GARDEN VILLAS, a half hectare upscale development of 14 single-detached homes. All 14 units were sold in 7 months time. Another townhomes project is the GARDEN TERRACES, also within LGV. It is an upscale development of 3,750 sq.m allotted for 7 single-detached units. The model unit was completed last January 1998.
Garden Villas
These townhomes projects are the first in the city which offer complete sports and leisure facilities, i.e. amenities of the Ladislawa Country Club, as well as the security, facilities and amenities of the LADISLAWA GARDEN VILLAGE community.

Maa Road, Maa, Davao City
Alsons Land Corporation
Aldevinco’ s second residential project (1994-1997) following the successful launching of Ladislawa Garden Village, this 42-hectare project is another first for the company and for Davao City, being the City’s first nature-themed subdivision. Woodridge park has the highest rate of home building and to date 100% of its lots are sold.
Featuring the same first-class community facilities that has become LGV’s standard of quality; WOODRIDGE showcases a distinct blend of the best community and recreational facilities with a strong natural landscape theme. It offers among others, a community clubhouse, plexi-paved tennis courts, a multi-purpose gym, a competition size swimming pool and a network of parks and open areas for each subdivision cluster.
WOODRIDGE TOWNHOUSES
WOODRIDGE also has the same upscale townhouse developments within its perimeter, the WOODRIDGE PARK HOMES. This is an 11,298-sq.m. project of 44 single-detached units, clustered into 3 groups, each with its own nature design themes: the NORTH FOREST Park homes, a 2,700-sqm development, composed of 13 units, which construction ended in late 1997;the NARRA Park homes, a 3,060-sqm project of 5 units located along Narra Lane, which construction ended in early 1998;and the ACACIA Park homes, to be composed of 26 units, which boasts of Acacia trees surrounding its cluster.

Center for Asian Culinary Studies-Davao
http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/1203/100302cn6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Before chefs were hailed as rockstars, I already wanted to be one. I sang for my band in highschool but the lure of the knife was stronger than the mic.
When I was to enter college at the University of the Philippines, I wanted to take Culinary Arts but my father wanted me to become an engineer. Both of us failed - I didn't become an engineer nor a chef. Frustrated Chef Strike 1.
After graduating from UP, culinary thoughts still hounded me, so with all the guts I had, I asked for my father's permission to leave our family business and enroll myself at the Center of Culinary Arts Manila. I took and passed the exam. I had myself interviewed and all. To make the long sad story short, I didn't make it to the first day of school. Frustrated Chef Strike 2.
I have attended numerous short classes at Sylvia Reynoso, Center for Culinary Arts, Heny Sison, and Chef Gene Gonzales of Center for Asian Culinary Studies Manila. I have written to Chef Reggie Aspiras, and I have stalked Chef Fernando Aracama while he was withdrawing money from an ATM machine in Legaspi Village, Makati. If you know the people I mentioned you're equally as crazy as me. Hehehe! Frustrated Chef Strike 3.
I cook for my dormates and made sure that their birthdays are on my calendar so I would have the perfect excuse to cook. I cook for my family and sometimes with themes such as Japanese or Italian nights. I cooked for my boyfriend and his family once(hahaha and made a mess out of their kitchen). I even cooked for my dear late tutor, so he'd spend our tutor time eating. Frustrated Chef Strikes again.
I collect cookbooks and am the type who reads them while I do my thing inside the comfort room-BWAHAHAHA!
I am the ULTIMATE FRUSTRATED CHEF.
Fortunately, the Center for Asian Culinary Studies has opened its doors to us Davaoeños and Mindanaoans! It's owned by Chef Gene Gonzales, the same guy who owns Cafe Ysabel and the CACS-Manila located in San Juan, Manila. You need not go to Manila to attend their short courses. Lucky lucky you! This is a milestone for the Davao culinary scene! This would def spruce up the scene for us hunters/huntresses!
One of these days, I will attend one of the recreational courses. If you see a lady with long hair, 5'6 in height or 5'8(with heels) with a frustrated look on her face---that would probably be me. Mwahahaha!

Spro Training
http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/447/gsemultipart65534hv1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Since the last posting, a trainee has quit for, I assume, better oppurtunities. Shame... he was a tall chap, would've have been great for the volleyball team.
On the last two trainees...
On has prior experience and the other is a none.
Espresso making was, ah..., a breeze. Grinding, dosing, distributing, tamping, pulling, cleaning was learned quickly by all and sundry.
Milk. Ah... the milk frothing excercise was an... excercise in frustration, even for the experienced one. Even I had a tough time. Damn espresso machine makes so much steam with it's 4-hole tip that frothing is basically over in less than 10 seconds. So after 4L of milk down the drain (we could only drink so much...) I decided on an expensive modification for the steam tips.
Next day after procuring the parts needed at great expense, I attacked both tips with the pliers (washed and cleaned). Removed tips had 2 holes (out of 4) plugged with broken-off toothpicks (P5.00 a container). WALAH! Fast steam stream but at reduced volume. I even have time to whistle a tune. The experienced trainee (oxymoron...) had no trouble building a nice froth. The green trainee still had trouble. Last night the green trainee was finally getting it, sort of. I'll know later just how 'get it' did the trainee got.

Mwahahaha!

OCEAN COVE, which is located just 25 minutes away from the city’s central district, is among the recent addition to the city’s unprecedentedly growing land development scene. Different though from other premier communities which usually perch on hills, this proposed 15.80-hectare residential enclave brags of its long stretch of beachfront. With a clubhouse, basketball court, playground and an infinity pool, one need not go out of the cozy confines of the community to experience the heat, the wind and the waves of the tropics. A plus is its five-minute distance from the Apo Golf and Country Club. Undeniably an irresistible find for those whose idea of vacation and living is frolic and fun.

Seoul-Manila-Davao flights to promote Davao as golf haven
Davao City’s tourism sector is cashing in on the emerging Korean and Chinese markets by promoting the city as a golf destination.
“We have been promoting the city as a honeymoon destination especially for Koreans but our golf facilities is one thing that the city can be proud of,” Davao Tourism Association president Art Boncato said.
He said Davao is one of the preferred golf destinations in the Philippines because of the general peacefulness of the area and the lack of traffic compared to Manila and Cebu.
Japanese and Korean golfers who find Japanese courses very expensive trek to the city because of its golf courses.
Davao has six golf facilities including the Andrew’s Driving Range in Shrine Hills, the 18-hole Apo Golf and Country Club in Dumoy and Lanang Country Club in Lanang, the Davao City Golf Club in Matina, Ranchos Palos Verdes in Buhangin and Golf Masters Sports Club in Maa.
Boncato said golf is one of the major attractions of Davao City especially for the Korean market but it has not really taken off because of the lack of direct flights between Davao and Korea.
The launch of the Philippine Airlines flight between Seoul, Korea and Manila with connecting flights to Davao City on December 16 this year will bring in the Korean tourists to the city’s golf clubs.
The Seoul-Manila (connecting Davao) flights is on its trial run and will be serviced by PAL’s Airbus 320.
A charter flight courtesy of Air Macau will also service the Macau-Seoul-Davao destination. The charter flight will start on January 3, 2007.(lovely a. carillo)

“PTA Ground”, a 7 hectare sports area at the heart of Davao City, Philippines that has been the venue of athletic competitions and public activities has lately become idle as the city government pondered on its future as it plans to set up an athletic ground outside the center of the city.
Recently a decision was made to convert it into a nature park, the brainchild of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte as he patterned it after the 843-acre Central Park in New York City. The Human Development International lauds the decision of the Mayor to establish a mini forest park in the center of the city amidst bustling traffic and tall buildings for it will give people the opportnunity to commune with nature in the very heart of the city. Further instill a high state of public consciousness on the need to protect and preserve the environment. This project is part of the Mayor’s all out effort to bring a “people centered and ecologically balanced development” in the city as it grows to become a great bustling metropolis in the country and in the East Asian Growth Area comprising of countries like Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and others. It is the largest city in the world in point of area and endowed with nature’s
beauty and resources making it not only a food basket but also an important tourist destination.
The mayor said big trees from other areas can be transported and planted in the projected nature park called "balling". The city government is determined to pursue this P70 Million project which will be a model for other cities to follow. It is expected that planting of the big trees will be finished by the year end.
Ian Jon Mendoza, HDI Philippines Executive Director and Ambassador of the Call to Save the Mountains of the World lauded the City Mayor for the remarkable project. Mendoza said, that said undertaking supplements the Call to Save the Mountains of the World done at Mt. The Youth Ambassadors had the opportunity to interact with local people at the last hinterland sitio of Culan where the group made camp before their ascent on the peak.
Despite heavy rains and fallen trees and branches that blocked the trail caused by recent typhoon, the team together with climbers from the Municipal ity of Santa Cruz cleared and make trails for the upcoming national climb and to re-echo the call.

Published : 2007-06-13
TWO hundred nursing students from the Liceo de Cagayan of Cagayan de Oro City enjoyed their island hopping last Saturday at the Island Garden City of Samal.
They were accompanied by Level Coordinator Dolores Mercado and their clinical instructors John Erman Obidos, Gladys Seno, Maylinda oro, Remedios Jacalan, Marineta Pantanosas, Hazzelel Tabalda, Mc Michael Daan, Allan Jimenez, Richmon Delicana, Roberto Alli III, Joel Defensor, Fatima Tanzo, Louie Pacamalan, Rey Ronald Solde and Vincent Labininay.
They boarded three motorized boats owned by the Wind and Wave Davao, which has the biggest fleet in Mindanao .
“Chada (beautiful)!” said Sir Obidos, who has even been with the past island hopping of the nursing department since late last year.
“It has always been okay with WAWD. You feel comfortable with their crew because they really know their job,” Obidos said.
Obidos said their students and fellow CIs also enjoyed the beautiful white sand beaches and clear blue waters at the different resorts.
They first went to the Coral Garden for swimming, snorkeling and kayaking and later proceeded to Babusanta Beach Resort to take their lunch and enjoy some games like the Miss Gay and Miss Bikini contests.
And then they went to Isla Cristina for more swimming, kayaking and snorkeling.
They later went around the Talikud Island passing by Isla Reta, Samal Casino, BFAR fish cages, Samal Dream Resort, Kembali Resort, Kaputian and to the world-famous Pearl Farm Beach Resort and its nearby Malipano Island and Wishing Island .
CI Mohammed Canlor and his two female students got the better fun and experience when they tried the intro dive conducted by dive master July Ramos, who was assisted by Lenith Fordan of WAWD.
“Mas nag-enjoy talaga kami kasi nakapag scuba diving pa kami,” said Canlor, who is accompanying their students for more than a month for a training at a local hospital in Davao City .
Liceo de Cagayan will again be bringing back another batch of nursing students next month.
“Chada man gud dire!” he said.
WAWD, the only PADI Dive Center in Mindanao, also offers different dive courses aside from intro dive and boat rentals. It also has jetskis, banana boat, speedboat, windsurfing, wakeboarding, sunset cruise and kayaking.
For inquiry, visit the WAWD main office at PPA Building , Sta. Ana Wharf or call tel. nos. 300-DiVE or 305-DiVE.

DAVAO CITY — If you are a first-timer here — if, let’s say, you don’t have any idea about this city except its tough-talking mayor, the beaches, the white sand — try visiting the public markets, where you will discover this metropolis’s naked allure. Try it — and you will find the ingenuity of a people trying to eke out a living, the prices that are lower compared to those in air-conditioned malls, the luscious fruits on the stands, the fresh flowers lining up the sidewalks, greeting you with their warmth.
The ‘Ukay-Ukay’ Hunt
DAVAO CITY — Shopping malls are aplenty in Davao City. But for those who are on a tight budget or do not want to be caught wearing the same outfit as the next person in the jeepney, there are alternative places to shop. One of these are the ukay-ukay (used clothes) stores. “Ukay-ukay” is a Visayan term that means to rummage.
Tudaya’s Allure
TUDAYA, Davao del Sur — The height and power of Tudaya Falls can leave you awed and breathless. It has a way of making you forget the difficulties of going there, when you trudged the hills, crossed the rivers, slipped on the muddy road and sprained a hand and tortured your butt. Tudaya Falls makes you realize it was all worth the trouble.
White Water
Adventure at Sibulan
SIBULAN, Davao del Sur — For the adventurous soul who dares brave the strong, harsh waters of a running river, there’s always the whitewater tubing facility in this village, in Darong town, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur, to check out. The tubing facility is located inside the Ayala compound, a 700-hectare coconut plantation owned by the Ayala-Zobels.
Take a Hike
DAVAO CITY — If living the city life in Davao may lose some of its appeal and excitement after sometime, retreating to the boondocks might be a good alternative. The surrounding areas of metro Davao have much to offer. To the northwest and southwest of the city are the mountains and hills of Calinan and Toril, which are set with long trails, rough terrains and both short and long climbs that are sure to delight the hiking enthusiast.
Davao’s
Dive Spots
DAVAO CITY — If you are looking for fun and exciting aqua-sport here, scuba diving is one of the options. There are several dive sites in the Davao Gulf, which are only 45 minutes to 120 minutes away from the city proper. You can choose from the following dive spots: Ligid Islad, Aundanao, Tagbobo, Pangubatan, Mushroom Rock, Paet Point, Coral Garden, Isla Reta, Talisay Wall, Angel’s Cave, Mansud Wall, Malipano Island, Pearl Farm, Punta del Sol, and Paradise Island.
How Davao
Became ‘Little Tokyo’
DAVAO CITY – On a wall in one of the galleries of the Davao Museum has an interesting exhibit on how Davao became a city.
Accordingly, Davao became a city out of fear of Japanese control. The account says that “during the constitutional convention in 1934, one delegate in the person of Pantaleon Pelayo Sr. denounced the control of Japanese in Davao and their unlimited acquisition of land.

Rall June 14th, 2007, 06:01 PM Coffee Dream in Damosa Gateway
Yesterday morning, I was meeting a friend for coffee at Coffee Dream in Damosa Gateway in Davao, and I happened to notice a new Restaurant there. It caught my eye because they had a big sign out front saying that they were offering “greaseless chicken,” all you can eat for P80. Hey, that’s less than $2 for all the chicken you can eat! Sounds interesting. Well, after my meeting, I went home and picked up Feyma and we went out for lunch to try the place out! Our son, Chris also came along!
Well, when we entered the place I noticed that it was crowded with people, I guess such a great deal on the chicken will draw people in! In addition to the crowd, we noticed how nice the place was, it’s really an upscale ambiance that you feel in the place. It’s well decorated, the aircon is cool, and it just feels good to be there. The staff was friendly, and brought us a menu right away, and asked if we wanted to try their endless chicken lunch. We said that we would, but also looked at the menu and chose a couple of appetizers to start off with. We had some little pizza pies (sorry I don’t remember the exact name, but “pizza” was part of the name) and they were excellent! As a matter of fact, they were so good that we went for a second order of them! We also tried their onion rings which were great as well. When the chicken came, it was also superb! For such a low price, I didn’t expect it to be nearly that good. I am not sure why it is called “greaseless” because it was deep friend, and puddle of grease was under the chicken, but other places here also have “greaseless” chicken which is the same. I suppose it’s some kind of local use of the word. It was what I expected, let’s say that.
One thing that really impressed me was that the drinks were ICE cold! Probably the coldest drinks that I’ve found at any restaurant in town, which I like a lot! Only negative on the drinks is that they only had two diet cokes in the house, and although I wanted to order another, it wasn’t available. My son had a regular coke, and it was also the last one available. They need to beef up their supply of drinks a bit. I ended up drinking water, which didn’t make them any extra money!
Another thing that is severely lacking is the service. It took a LONG time to get the food. Even paying the bill took about 15 minutes. There were three waiters in the place, and a ton of customers. On top of that, the place is new, so I expect that they are still “getting the hang of it” and working out kinks. I hope that the service improves, because I certainly intend to go back and enjoy their delicious food again in the future.
Although I’m not a real beer drinker, I noticed that they were offering San Miguels on a special deal, if you bought 5 you got another 2 for free. Not bad!
Give Q Resto a try if you are in Davao! I recommend it. Tell them that Mindanao Bob sent you!

Davao's Eman in PBA Draft
FORMER University of Mindanao (UM) Wildcats slotman Samigue Eman is all set for the PBA Rookie Draft on August 14 at the Market Market Place in Taguig.
Eman, a 6-foot-nine behemoth who hails from Davao City and a mainstay of Henkel Sista in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL), confirmed this in text messages to Sun.Star Davao Wednesday.
"I'm willing to take my chances. Kahit pang ilang round sa drafting pa ako makuha, okay lang. Basta ma-draft lang ako (It's okay even if takes how many rounds to draft me. What is important is that I get drafted)," Eman said.
Aside from Eman, others eligible to apply for the draft are reigning Most Valuable Players of the UAAP and NCAA, Ken Bono and Jayson Castro, along with Harbour Centre's JC Intal, Ryan Arana and Beau Belga, Toyota Balintawak's Marvin Cruz, Cebuana Lhuillier's Doug Kramer and Burger King's JR Quinahan.
Interested applicants still have until July 20 to submit their requirements.
The PBA, in a statement said, applicants must be 23-years of age by Draft day, a college graduate, a high school graduate or would have at least graduated from secondary level four years preceding this year's Draft.
Aspirants are also required to submit an NSO (National Statistics Office) birth certificate, diploma in case the player is below 23-years-old and 2x2 ID pictures.
PBA Commissioner Noli Eala said it is going to be an exciting and interesting Draft Day again for the PBA especially with the entry of a new batch of prospective league superstars. (MLSA)

dinabaw June 15th, 2007, 03:34 AM 200 Liceo de Cagayan nursing students in Samal island hopping

Cafe Mediterranean
http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/6012/img0014nj5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Before sending off Mr. H to the airport, we are going to have our last food adventure. So along with dear Manong A, our driver, we headed to the Cafe Mediterranean. By the way, compliments to Mr.H who did a great job in taking a photo of Cafe Med's logo.
http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/3308/img0011wt2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
It's good to have a slice of Manila here in our beloved town. To that, I thank the Felcris management for bringing in Tong Yang, Banana Leaf, and now the Cafe Mediterranean. The last time I ate at the Cafe Med was at Rockwell about 4 years ago!
My brother informed me that it was now open here in Davao and it took me by surprise! My sister and our friends Ms. T and Ms.N beat me in eating there first. They didn't like the kebabs that much but told me that pizza was good. Now my turn...
When we arrived, the sign said closed and opens at 11:00 am to 10:00 pm. It's now 11:07 am on my mobile phone. When they saw us at the door, a waitress ran to door apologizing she forgot to turn the sign. I hate it when the staff forgets to turn the sign to open. Call me unsparing but it really is bad for business. They lose the customers! By the way, I'm not the average customer who just walks away-I rattle closed doors-go ask my brother, he saw me in action once. HAHA!
http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/5839/img0032np1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Med Cafe serves Soups, salads, gyros(Greek sandwiches), large plates(main courses), pizzas, pastas, kebabs, and desserts.
We ordered the pita bread with 3 sampler dips, 2 Chicken kebabs with buttered rice, Kofta kebabs with buttered rice, and iced tea. I wanted to try the Baklava ala mode for dessert but it was not in stock. Forgive us if we started eating the pita bread before I took a photo of it-we were obviously hungry. The buttered rice was yummy and all the dips and sauces were intriguing just watch out for the hot one! For the 3 of us we paid P784.
http://img118.imageshack.us/img118/1289/img0023zh2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The interiors were spanking new and obviously followed a mediterannean theme. Even the piped music was Mediterranean which added to the vibe. Though it would have been nice, make that convenient, if they had a restroom.
If the idea of trying something new doesn't convince you, just think of the movie 300! If those hunky Mediterraneans were in Davao, they would have probably be hanging at Cafe Med.
"Spartans, eat a hearty breakfast for tonight we dine in hell!" HAHAHAHAHA!

Pizzaiolo
http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/5466/img0056rf3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Tonight Mr. H promised me that we'd be having pizza at Pizzaiolo. Last dinner with Mr. H before he leaves tomorrow...
Pizzaiolo is one of Waterfront's dining options. In Davao City, I think this is the only pizza place that serves very unique versions of the well loved pizza. They have Pizza Filipino, Texan BBQ Pizza, Pizza Flamenco, Sisig ala Cubana, Peperoncino Ross, Pizza Mare Chiaro, Pizza Mongolia, Pizza ala Genovese, Pizza Florentina, Pizza Milano, Pizza Portofino-WHEW!
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/9960/img0045wz2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Amidst the myriad of pizzas, I had to feed the boyfriend. Strictly no pineapples for Mr. H. My boyfriend is not an adventurous eater but I force him to be one but there are times that I just let him be. So I ordered the harmless Pizza Milano and the quintessential Pasta Bolognaise.
http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/9397/img0060eo7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
We finished the whole pizza since it was full of flavor and thin-crusted (okay the thin-crusted part is an excuse). The pasta is okay but a bit sweet and they also burned the bread.
They also have a good beverage selection and for those who love desserts, you can choose from pralines, cheesecakes, eclairs, and cakes from the cake display. You can also take home some gourmet bread-i bought a pack of dinner rolls for Mama since it's her favorite.
We paid P894.98 and its a bit steep for pizza and pasta for 2 but if you're tired of the usual Hawaiian or Pepperoni, now is the chance to sink your teeth to one of Pizzaiolo's interesting pizza choices and while you're there do enjoy the unhurried atmosphere, I think it's part of what you're paying for.

But look at our advantage!

SINCE MARCH 1994, Asia's newest growth region has continuously impacted economically and socially on the lives of its people. Several are aware of its potentials, but many others have yet to grasp the concept of the BIMP-EAGA.
The BIMP-EAGA (or simply EAGA) stands for the Brunei Darussalam Indonesia Malaysia the Philippines - East ASEAN Growth Area. It is Asia's largest regional grouping, spanning territories of four ASEAN countries.
History of BIMP-EAGA
•Owing to the success of the growth area concept in several sub-regions in Asia, the heads of state of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines met in 1992 to discuss the adoption of the concept through an economic cooperation scheme involving the four countries.
•Two years after the initial discussions, the Brunei Darussalam Indonesia Malaysia Philippines - East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) was officially launched coinciding the inaugural Senior Officials and Ministerial Meeting (SOMM) on 24-26 March 1994 in Davao City, Philippines.
•Immediately after its creation, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) conducted an exhaustive investigative study on the growth potentials of the sub-region that initially identified 13 areas of cooperation.
Major BIMP-EAGA Accomplishments
Direct Air Linkages
•Availability of direct flight from Davao City to Manado City in North Sulawesi, Indonesia.
oIndonesia's Bouraq Airlines offered businessmen and tourists a shorter and faster route at affordable fare.
oPreviously, travel between the two cities via Manila and Jakarta took eight hours and cost US$1,070 (round trip).
o The new direct route cut down travel time to an hour and ten minutes and fare to US$260.00.
•Establishment of direct air link between Davao City and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, courtesy of Malaysia Airlines (MAS), during the period November 1995 to December 1997.
oPreviously, it took five hours via Manila or three hours via Cebu at a cost of US$584.00 (round trip).
oThe direct route cut travel time to two hours and 25 minutes at US$449.00 (round trip).
Direct Sea Linkages
•In 1994, Zamboanga-based Aleson Shipping Lines began to offer sea transport services between Zamboanga City and Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia.
•Followed by Sampaguita Shipping Lines, also based in Zamboanga, in servicing the same route.
•In November 1996, Fajar Shipping Lines started to provide sea travel services between General Santos City and Bitung in North Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Tourism
•When BIMP-EAGA was formalized in 1994, tourist arrivals in Mindanao specifically in Davao began to significantly increase.
•Several hotels and restaurants were also constructed to cater to the increased number of visitors.
oRevival of Samal Casino Resort Hotel in the Island Garden City of Samal
oThe Marco Polo in Davao City
Policy Modification
The Philippines' warm response to worldwide initiatives towards a freer trade environment boosted its bid to become a key global player, particularly through the inclusion and participation of Mindanao and Palawan in the BIMP-EAGA. Concrete policy support to this included the following:
a.Exemption from travel tax. Beginning March 1995, the Philippine Government exempted travelers between BIMP-EAGA destinations from paying travel tax amounting to US$30.00. This encouraged transit through Mindanao as international gateway to or from the other BIMP-EAGA member-countries.
b.Decentralization of Philippine Contractors Accreditation Board (PCAB) functions. Resulting from the efforts of the Southern Philippines Core Group on Construction and Construction Materials, the functions of the PCAB at the Mindanao level were decentralized in September 1995 to facilitate licensing, accreditation and granting of exemptions, among others.
c.Full Disclosure Policy. Issued by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) through Memorandum Order No. 06 on April 1997, this makes obligatory the delineation and full disclosure of the terms of reference in the hiring of workers in foreign countries. Among the information required to be disclosed in the Terms of Reference (TOR) pursuant to this policy are compensation rate, accommodation facilities, occupational hazards, and length of employment, among others.
d.Special Border Crossing Agreement. The Philippines and Malaysia have institutionalized border crossing and border patrol cooperation mechanisms under the ambit of the Joint Committee on Border Cooperation (JCBC) established in 1993. Both countries are still in the process of finalizing the border crossing pass which is essential in the implementation of the said agreement. Nonetheless, the border crossing stations in Sandakan, Malaysia and Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, Philippines are being opened for the special border crossing arrangement. Meanwhile, Labuan in Malaysia and Balabak, as well as Taganak in the Philippines are considered for future opening, considering its joint development efforts in the Turtle Island Heritage Protected Area (TIHPA).
e.Mutual Recognition of Skills Standards and Certification. Based on an agreed set of skills standards, each member-country would issue a skills certificate that will facilitate employment and give preferential status to workers for overseas employment in other member-countries.
f.Uniform Port Tariff (UPT) Agreement. The agreement allows vessels docked at ports within BIMP-EAGA to enjoy reduced rates. In support to this agreement, the Board of Directors of the Philippines Ports Authority (PPA) passed a resolution allowing 50 percent reduction of dockage fees in any Mindanao port for vessels originating from other BIMP-EAGA ports. Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia have granted Philippine vessels the same incentive. Malaysia still has to do so.
EAGA Investments
As of 1997, total EAGA investments in Mindanao and Palawan amounted to US$29 million. Most of these investments came from Malaysia.
Sustained Growth of Mindanao and Palawan Economies
Mindanao's active participation in BIMP-EAGA has significantly contributed to the positive growth rate of its Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP).
Poverty incidence in Mindanao has likewise dropped.
Socio-Cultural Gains
Renewing socio-cultural ties that date back to many centuries has served as a firm foundation for pursuing productive economic endeavors. Among the activities that have contributed to such are the BIMP-EAGA Food Festival, BIMP-EAGA Rodeo Lineman's Skills Olympics, BIMP-EAGA Friendship Games, BIMP-EAGA Friendship Marathon, EAGA Mountain Biking Competition and East ASEAN Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament.

tj_brewed June 16th, 2007, 06:43 PM The Koreans are coming!
By IVY LISA F. MENDOZA
Manila Bulletin
http://www.mb.com.ph/TOUR2007061796042.html
Korean ‘’invasion’’ is happening in the country and Philippine tourism stalwarts are welcoming this with open arms.
Last year, inbound traffic from Korea achieved a milestone when it posted a record arrival of 572,133 visitors, the largest single source of tourism traffic to the Philippines. This figure translates to a 16.9 percent increase compared to record arrivals during the same period in 2005.
This year for the first quarter, Korean tourists have maintained the top spot with 171,716 travelers arriving in the country.
‘’This accounts for 21.7 percent of the total arrivals of the period, and an 18 percent increase from last year,’’ explains Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace H. Durano. ‘’The first quarter, mostly comprising winter and partly spring, is really the best time for Koreans to travel abroad and escale the very cold weather.’’
With a market so lucrative to tap, it is no wonder that the Philippines had sent a 60-man delegation to the Korea World Travel Fair (KOTFA) 2007 in Seoul, Korea last week to gun for a bigger share of the Korean outbound travel market pie and slug it out with traditional favorite destinations such as China, Japan and Thailand. KOTFA is recognized worldwide as the leading travel exhibitin in Korea.
Durano heads the RP contingent to the annual travel show composed of airlines, tour operators, hotels and resorts. Key destinations included Casa del Mar Golf Resort, Costabella Tropical Beach Hotel, Marco Polo Plaza Cebu, Waterfront Airport Hotel Cebu, Amarela Resort, Eskaya Beach Resort and Spa in Bohol, Pearl Farm Beach Resort, Marco Polo Davao, Pearl of the Pacific Boracay, Bahura Resort and Spa in Dumaguete, Anilao Outrigger Resort, Microtel Inns and Suites, Hyatt Hotel and Casino Manila, Century Park Hotel Manila, and Subic Legend Hotels and Casinos.
Also represented are Philippine Airlines, SEAIR and six tour operators namely Indo’s Travel and Tours, Regent Travel, Hana Tour, No. 1 Tour, Kahsan Travel and Island Resort Club Tour.
Durano was also the guest of honor at the opening of KOTFA. Maximizing his short visit, he held a business meeting with Seoul Mayor Oh Se Hoon for potential cooperative endeavours and a fellowship gathering with wholesalers of the Korean travel trade.
HIGHER TARGET
The arrival figures from Korea may be generally satisfactory but ******* Basco-Ebron, Tourism Attache and head of the Department of Tourism Team Korea, says there is certainly so much more to conquer.
‘’The Philippines ranks fifth among their favorite travel destinations, getting 4.9 percent of the 11 million outbound Korean tourists, but I really believe that we can share the fourth place with Thailand, if not totally outdo them. Thailand gets 7.8 percent of the Korean visitors, while China, Japan and the US occupy the top three spots,’’ Ebron explains.
To achieve this, the DoT has been stepping up marketing activities in Korea, building and enhancing the image of the Philippines as a quality destination to Korean visitors that traditionally include golfers, honeymooners, career women, businessmen, young professionals, and students coming over to study English as a second language. Newer markets to tap include families and outbound summer vacationers.
Ebron reveals that the P150-million budget a year to promote the Philippines in Korea are mostly spent in advertising in Korean newspapers, magazines, cable channels and online promotions. A PR agency is also retained to be able to counter any negative publicity that the Philippines might get in the local Korean press.
The DoT has come out with promotional brochures and informative literature about the various destinations and activities the Philippines has to offer. Written in the Korean language, these materials allow the Korean travel trade to understand and appreciate the Philippines even better.
The Tourism department also took the opportunity to launch at KOFTA 2007 the maiden issue of ‘’7107: Philippines Travel News."
Also launched at KOTFA was a five-minute video of the DoT’s latest ‘’Beyond The Usual’’ campaign that highlights the uniqueness of the Philippines.
‘’We are raising promotions to a higher level,’’ assures Durano. ‘’Our tagline for Korea is ‘More Than You Can Imagine’ because we want to show the country’s best-selling destinations, natural wonders, pristine beaches, thrilling adventures and real bargains.’’
Ebron adds that the marketing campaign prioritizes not just the appropriate market segments but also the geographic locations.
‘’We factor in the seasons for intensified marketing and promotions. There is a season to market the lower-priced education packages to attract students. There is also a season to target honeymooners and families,’’ Ebron explains.
SELLING TO KOREA
Trust is a big word among Koreans. It is precisely the same tool that members of the Philippine travel trade are using in marketing to Koreans.
‘’They put the most value on deep-rooted relationships, just like we Filipinos do. Once you have proven to them that you can deliver, they will come back to you and offer you good business. I call it ‘puso sa puso’ because everything boils down to relationship’’ attests Roy B. Martin of Microtel Inns and Suites, a chain of midrange–priced accommodations located in Tarlac, Baguio, Eagle Ridge, Cavite, Sto. Tomas, Batangas, Boracay, Cabanatuan, Palawan and soon in Davao, SM Mall of Asia.
Martin has seen how the Korean travel market has developed through the years and he agrees that there is more to be tapped in the coming years.
Eileen F. Tuanio, senior sales manager of Pearl Farm Beach Resort in Davao, could not agree more. ‘’We are very happy selling Davao to our Korean agents. Korean visitors spend an average of two nights, three days in a resort destination, and about the same in a city destination.’’
With diving as one of the favorite activities of Korean tourists, the Bahura Resort and Spa takes a big leap and joins the KOTFA for the first time to acquaint itself with the Korean market. Its efforts are paying off, according to Agnes Lachica-Macapia, Bahura director of sales, who has found great sales lead in KOTFA through direct marketing.
The Philippines is so versatile that it is a cinch to sell it to the adventurous Korean market.
‘’They are always willing to try new destinations, new accommodations and new things to do. That’s why we are always on our toes to put together new packages that will entice them to come to the country and make it a point that their visit is always different, always better than their last,’’ adds Norman O. Eusebio of Microtel Inn and Suites Sto. Tomas.
For instance, Eusebio cites Microtel’s effort to increase its student market. With a tie-up with Phinma Training Center and De La Salle University, Microtel readies to target students who come to the Philippines to study English.
In his meeting with Korea’s travel trade players, Durano underscored the bullish investment sentiments in the country.
‘’Large tourism investments include Boracay Shangri-La Hotel. SM Investments is set to engage into a new thrust of development, eco-tourism real estate, with the launching of the masterplan for the Hamilo Coast to become a premier coastal residential and resort town. A new convention center at the Mall of Asia will open in October, which will be accessible to a series of hotels such as Carlson Hotels, Accoard, Manila Marriot Hotel, The Fairmont, and the Raffles Hotel,’’ Durano reveals.
Furthermore, offering more air seats will augur well for Philippine tourism. Durano reveals that a new air agreement between the Philippines and Korean governments provides for about 39,000 air seats a week, from the present 13,000 seats a week. At present, Philippine Airlines maintains two flights a day between Incheon and Manila, and one flight daily between Incheon and Cebu. There will also be direct flights between Incheon and Davaoand pretty soon, Incheon and Kalibo.
SPOTLIGHT ON DAVAO
Philippine participation in KOTFA 2007 highlighted Davao, which was tagged as ‘’The City of Bloom and Boom From Islands to Highlands.’’ Theaterical presentations focused on the rites and rituals of Davao as a testament to the region’s cultural wealth.
Why Davao?
‘’Davao is an excellent example of a melting pot of rich cultural heritage. It likewise has an awesome topography - the Mt. Apo stands amid a scenic landscape of valleys dotted with fruit plantations and orchid farms,’’ Durano said in his presentation.
The Secretary also invited the Korean travel trade to discover the attractions of Davao through the Kadayawan Festival slated in August.
‘’Strategically, we are one step ahead by sending out a single and simple message that the Philippines has many things beyond tropical Asia can offer. The 7,107 islands is our brand differentiator. The perfect visual theme to support the Philippines at this time is Davao because of its pleasant climate throughout the year. We believe Davao can and will be Korea’s flagship destination for the upcoming years,’’ Durano says with so much optimism.

tj_brewed June 16th, 2007, 07:04 PM Good question!

Since 1986, some of the world’s most respected companies have depended on Sutherland to manage various aspects of their customer operations. By taking advantage of Sutherland’s domain knowledge, quality processes and global delivery options, clients are able to dramatically improve their sales, marketing and customer support results while remaining focused on their core competencies.

Currently, Sutherland owns and operates multiple delivery centers across the United States, Canada, India and the Philippines.
Sutherland Global Services is a privately-held company with headquarters in the United States.

I've heard that fronting this mall (a prime lot nonetheless!) is owned by the Lims of NCCC and has been earmarked for an IT Park. They have another lot somewhere in Mamay area as well which has been identified earlier for the same purpose. It might not be a long shot before this projects come into fruition ....after PEZA approval for NCCC Mall.

You mean they would build an IT Zone across the mall?
Anyway, d rin nagpapahuli ang DAMOSA IT PARK. My former officemate, who's now in Davao, told me that there are constructions going on within DAMOSA IT PARK.

Re: Lot fronting NCCC - I think that was the plan for that lot!
This is only my guess..I think they are waiting for DCWD to vacate the area and move to the new location in Matina (old Magnolia Plant). My friends who work for DCWD sort of alluded to these reasons. Politics inside the office and some disgruntled councilors are the culprits of the snail-paced process..:ohno:
tj_brewed June 16th, 2007, 07:41 PM bro...here's another thing that's happening within Davao City that I really like. Local Davao businessmen are being encouraged to invest in ICT. Thus, there are small call centers sprouting here and there. Let's give it sometime and these small companies will grow! There's a vast opportunity in ICT.
Take our company for example..When we started 7 years ago, it was ran by around 40 agents. Now, we are around 7,000 agents and counting with offices in Cebu, Manila, Baguio, Davao, And Costa Rica.
davaoeagle June 16th, 2007, 07:45 PM ^^

I'm afraid that our company will not be putting up a call center facility in Davao bro :ohno:. For the next 2 years, their investment focus will be in Cebu, Baguio, and Global City. The only presence that we have in Mindanao is our Recruitment and Training facility in Davao.
^^ But let's be optimistic. Who knows, the entry of Sutherland may be a triggering effect to other major call centers in the country - especially our company.

I was there a lot of times..one very memorable was for a debuting classmate in ADDU as one of the guys for the cotillon (spelling?).
My late boss from Cebu (may he rest in peace!) who had business in Mangagoy, Bislig City always mentioned the hotel with fond memories and one of those was when there was a strong quake rocking the city in '88. They were so worried the hotel being up on a hill. Sorry Waway, it's not the quake caused by what you think!

No idea on this. All I know is that Veneracions own the place and I used to call on one lady pediatrician practicing in Digos but resides in the big city. She said Ian Veneracion the actor was a relative. You won't be surprised she being a spanish mestizza.

davaosniper07 June 17th, 2007, 12:45 AM yeah singapore pass to cebu (silk air) and hong-kong by cebu pacific....while manado is part of bimp-eaga so it is allowed....i don't know about koror....i hope manila will allow davao to be an open sky, so that other international airlines outside bimp-eaga region can land in davao.....
davaoeagle June 17th, 2007, 12:49 AM There are 4 flights from Singa to Davao and vice-versa that do not pass by Cebu now. These 4 direct flights were opened last year.
davaosniper07 June 17th, 2007, 12:54 AM or may be its because singapore is part of asean region....its good to know.....but what i read is that manila base airlines are not happy about the idea of davao to be an open sky because they will lose business......i heard macau flight was cancel because of this....i hope it will change.....
davaoeagle June 17th, 2007, 12:59 AM ^
That's a long discourse to do talking about airline owners in the country. It ticks me off Davao's open sky plan is in the back burner. We need to lobby more on it though and we have a councilor in Davao who literally has a lamp under his ass (pardon the analogy) for this regard. I'm speaking of Hon. Councilor Pete Laviña. Hats off!
davaosniper07 June 17th, 2007, 01:13 AM oh yeah councilor retep....he is working hard on it i think.....i really dont know about this...i just read it somewhere.....what i learn now is that.....not to expect too much.....youll be disappointed...just like the davao-samal bridge (its another long story)......anyhow.....i am happy that at least davao has so many developments....reading this thread really excites me about davao.....just post post post guys.....

davaoeagle June 17th, 2007, 02:13 AM ^
Just like every city in the country, with the "just a drop in the bucket" investors, one city might be competing with another to siphon any possible investment.
Davao is aware that when it comes to BPO industry, it is only a David to Cebu's Goliath, just like Cebu to Manila.
Unbeknownst to many, Davao is now seeing the wisdom with what IT can do to a certain city as can be seen in many cities in the country with a vibrant IT industry.

tj_brewed June 17th, 2007, 06:16 AM Is Cebu and Davao rivals in terms of economy?why?:?
I heard they are competing over IT investors
Oh no....IMO, Davao has a different direction compared to Cebu. Majority of Davao's investment are poured in agriculture and Davao's strenght is also agriculture.
When it comes to IT, Davao never did compete with Cebu. Please take note that there is a thin line between the IT Industry and the BPO Industry. With IT, most of the players in Davao are Davao based software programmers and designers. These are the small to midsized entrepreneurs with companies which are into designs, content development, network, and software designs, etc.
With the BPO Industry, please take note that business is all about strategies. While Manila is the economic pulse of Luzon, Cebu is in Visayas, Davao is the natural choice in Mindanao. BPO players need to dispurse their operations to other locations for some economic reasons. BPO investors would rather invest in a city centrally, economically, and strategically located in an area where people converge. In Mindanao, the fact is this - DAVAO is the de facto capital.
Call centers, Contact centers, and other BPO players need workforce. In Mindanao, Davao is the best answer. But ei, come to think of it...none of the major BPO players in Cebu has invested yet in Davao. Most of the BPO players in Davao are from Luzon.
.....CEBU and DAVAO are not competing...in fact, they are assisting each other as they are the banners of development in the Philippines. But the sad fact is....some residents want them to compete - and I do not know why. Cebu's development direction and strenght is different from Davao's. If you've noticed - Cebu's development now is more into scrapers, constructions, etc....and Davao is more into agriculture, plantations, processing plants, residential estates, etc.

*** bai, suggestion lang:
...you can fly by Qatar Airways from Riyadh to Doha, Qatar and then Doha, Qatar to Cebu direct (no more via Singapore this time...it's now a direct flight to Cebu) .....and then connecting flight to Davao (via PAL or CEB).... much lesser ang hassle sa immigration if your port of entry will be in Cebu compared to crowded NAIA ....i paid only SAR2,980 or around Php37,250 (roundtrip Riyadh/Cebu/Riyadh)...for a July flight schedule..
...or, you can fly by Cathay Pacific (from Riyadh to Cebu (via HK) and then to Davao)

tj_brewed June 17th, 2007, 01:49 PM The Koreans are coming!
