Mindanao Banana Chips brining in some money!
by Bob @ 2:00 pm. Filed under News

http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/5306/bananachipsphotoan9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Banana chips are one of the Philippine’s emerging export winners to China. Produced mostly in Mindanao where there are more than 20 processing plants, total banana chip exports to China grew exponentially from US$ 100,000 in 2002 to US$ 5.9 M in 2006. The USAID-funded GEM Program, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA), is helping banana chip exporters in Mindanao to expand market access in China through participation in strategic food shows in China such as the China World of Food Exhibit held in Shanghai, China. The GEM Program is also undertaking a cardaba banana supply chain improvement effort which assists thousands of cardaba growers from key producing areas in Mindanao to improve over-all fruit quality and enhance availability of raw materials to support the requirements of the banana chip processing plants. The banana chip industry has become a strategic industry in Mindanao, directly supporting at least 30,000 cardaba growers throughout the island. (GEM Program)

Pampanga Festival at Café Marco
Published : 2007-06-21

MARCO Polo Davao, in partnership with the LJC Group of Restaurants and Cebu pacific, celebrates the vibrant colors of Filipino fiestas and traditions by hosting a Pampanga Food Festival from June 8 to July 31. During this event, Café Marco will be transformed into a barrio scene, complete with a spread of famous and delectable Capampangan cuisines.

Two exemplary chefs from the LJC Group of Restaurants will come to the hotel to join Executive Ched Ed Tuazon’s culinary team in capturing the distinct taste of Capampangan dishes. The chefs are flying via Cebu Pacific’s Clark-Cebu flight which is serviced by CEB’s brand new Airbus A319 with a 150 seat capacity. The flight operates daily with flight the leaving from Cebu at 10:15 a.m. to arrive in Clark at 11:35 a.m. The flight departs from Clark at 12:05 pm to arrive in Cebu at 1:25 p.m.

Part of the Pampanga Festival is also the book launch of Nick Joaquin’s latest literary piece on the respected writer and artists Abe Cruz, father of Mr. Larry J. Cruz.

Mr. Cruz, better known as LJC, is a multi-awarded restaurateur who has established over 40 restaurants and bars around the country. Aside from his famous Café Adriatico, Bistro Remedios, Ang Hang, and Café Havana, the closest to his heart is the Abe Restaurant as it is his tribute for his father. Abe’s menu reflects a selection of Capampangan favorites and regional dishes, to name a few.

Experience a one of kind celebration and rediscover the Filipino flavor and taste.

Food Expo attracts more visitors
By Rizalene P. Acac Published : 2007-06-21

AN ORGANIZER of the 2nd Food Processing and Packaging (FPP) Technology Exhibition in Bangko Sentral was expecting the number of visitors to the event this year will be twice the number of those who attended last year.

During the opening yesterday, Joel Pascual, president of Premier Events Plus Group Inc., the organizer of the event, said the number of people that arrived to look at the products and even join in the seminar was overwhelming.

The event closes on Saturday.

“We are very happy. Apparently this proves that we did our job well. Our cooperators also helped us a lot. Last year they were kind of passive about this but now they are very active and in fact (they) assisted us in passing the information,” he said.

Pascual said the first day was crucial in establishing the atmosphere for the exhibit and in trouble-shooting glitches.

But, he is optimistic that they could double the attendees from only 8,000 last year to 12,000 this year or a target of 4,000 a day.

Jacinto Guballa, technical sales and service manager of Trans World Trading Corporation, who flew to Davao last year to observe the event, said the number of participants has improved.

Guballa, whose company is into plastic, chemical distribution and food processing, said they were convinced to join because some of their big clients are involved.

He said they also want to introduce the other facets of their company, widely known to be a pesticide supplier, and to transfer their knowledge in food processing to small and medium enterprises.

Another exhibitor, Joey Juinio of Technolux, said the exhibit is a good avenue to explore the growing coffee shop business in the city.

He said they sponsored a seminar on coffee-making during the event and they hope to capture them as future customers. “We hope that many people will visit our booth and that we sell products,” he said.

Trans World and Technolux are both Manila-based companies which are first time exhibitors.

Elma Sorongon, production controller of a local plastic manufacturing company said the participation in the event last year paved way for increased sales.

“We could hardly reach one million per month (in our target sales) before but as of now we have exceeded our target,” she said.

Sorongon said their clients come from as far as Zamboanga and Cotabato City.

bolton, rizal and anda had very nice houses. it was the old district of davao. some probably survived till the 60s. even cortes had a few. one grand house was the fernandez piano school. remember the pre-uic cortes? anybody who can refresh us with that is surely welcome.

It was probably sold to have commercial establishments. Actually, many of the old houses in Downtown were destroyed to gave way to commercialization. For example, the Villa Abrilles still own many of those commercial structures that are being rented. I would not know much about those distant relatives of mine but they owned alot of those lands.

Peso brings biz plan competition to Davao
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE Philippine Emerging Startups Open (Peso), a technology innovation business plan competition in association with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Tech Club of the Philippines, is bringing to Davao City the first regional Business Plan Competition outside Metro Manila this year.

"Peso has been running this national competition for two years now and we want to bring the competition down to the regional level. The Davao Peso Business Plan Competition would mean that the entries will come from Davao, will be judged in Davao, and the winners will automatically qualify for the national competition this year," Federico Gonzalez, Peso president said at Thursday's Club 888 press forum.

Gonzalez said the competition does not target to choose a certain type of project or business plan to be declared as the winner, but it aimed to identify that somebody will be successful of the business plan to be chosen.

"There are cash awards to be given including the recognition on the most innovative business plan and the business plan with the highest social impact or appeal to the people," Gonzalez said, adding that the awards will be given on November, this year.

Meanwhile, Andrei Fournier, one of the Board of Trustees of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII), said the competition will gather all the capitalists from Davao City and the teams who will present the business plans.

"There are persons who have the money, but don't have the idea, and there are also those who have no money, but have the idea, we are actually matching these people in this competition," Fournier said.

Fournier added that each team shall be composed of individuals with at least one technopreneur student and a business management personnel in each team.

Fournier said the competition is patterned from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that has been conducting the competition for 17 years now.

Make way for exotic durian
By Henrylito D. Tacio

MAKE way for the most exotic -- if not controversial! - fruit found on this part of the globe: durian.

"Durian has an excellent taste that its flavor surpasses all the other fruits in the world," old traveler Linchott, writing in 1599, commented.

Dr. Paladanus, a world-renowned historian, added: "This fruit is of a Hot and humid nature. It smells like rotten onion, but once tasted, everybody will like it."

To which British naturalist Alfred Russell Wallace agreed. After a visit with the Interior of Borneo in 1855, he observed the offensive smell of durian in the house, some persons did not even attempt to taste it.

"This was also my own experience when I first tried to taste it in Malacca; but in Borneo, I found a ripe fruit on the ground, and eating it out-of-doors, I become confirmed durian eater."

In recent years, there is an increasing demand for durian in the export market. It is called as "exotic tropical fruit" in North America and Europe where customers offer premium price.

In the past, durian production areas are concentrated in Mindanao.

Today, however, durian is being grown in other parts of the country, including
Southern Tagalog and Western Visayas.

There are several varieties of durian grown in the Philippines. The
Most important ones, commercial-wise, according to the Laguna-based
Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development, are 'Chanee,' 'Mon Thong,' 'Alcon Fancy,' "Arancillo,'
'Atabrine,' 'Duyaya,' "GD 69,' "Lacson Uno,' 'Mamer,' and 'Puyat.'

Dr. Pablito Pamplona, one of the country's experts on durian, says that only the Thai varieties - 'Chanee' and 'Mon Thong' - are highly acceptable in the export market "owing to their milk odor and higher percentage of edible portion."

He warns not to plant 'Chanee' in areas with expected heavy rains during harvest months. "Chanee has a very erratic fruit quality when the harvest coincides with the rainy season," he explains.

Growing durian as a single crop entails considerable expense to growers during the first three years. As such, experts from the Mindanao Baptist
Rural Life Center (MBRLC) Foundation, Inc. recommend growing other crops and fruits.

"While waiting for the durian trees to bear fruits, farmers can plant vegetables, legumes, and root crops as initial source of income," suggests Roy Alimoane, MBRLC director.

Benjamin Lao, owner of the Lao Integrated Farm in Barangay Eman, Bansalan, Davao del Sur, went even further by planting other fruits. In the beginning, he planted 700 durians in his five-hectare farm. Later on, he added other fruits - mangosteen, rambutan, and lanzones - and also raised goats. He uses the manure as fertilizer for his fruit trees.

Six years after, Lao's farm has become a model and earned its owner. The Gawa Saka Award (integrated farming system category) from the municipal agriculture office. "What I want to convey here is that government service is never a hindrance to engage in other income-generating activities, like farming," said Lao, who is with the Bureau of Immigration in Davao City.

Durian fruit is generally eaten fresh. The ripe pulp is a good source of carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and some protein. The ripe pulp can also be made into jam, preserve (often packed like long sausages), candies, and other sweets.

Alcantara: Pug Mania!
By Joji Alcantara
Witerary

THE nicest thing about my job is that it doesn't feel like work at all. I get to visit places I want to feature, people I want to interview, and interesting stories I love to write about, without any pressure at all from anybody. The more unique a story is, the more that I want to share it to the public.

This week we're going to the dogs, literally. The Pug Club of Davao launched a Costume Fun Match in the park of Matina Town Square to foster camaraderie and fellowship among fellow Pug lovers in Davao City.

A Pug is that lovable breed in the movie Men in Black, who looks at you like it is seeing double. Well, to put it bluntly, it is so strange looking that it becomes simply cute and lovable. Believe me, I am a dog lover myself and no dog is ugly to me (and don't you dare say that word to a dog owner!).

So, I chanced upon these Pug owners, proudly holding on to the leashes of their pets dressed in the most outrageous costumes, and vying for prizes in the friendly competition. The tallying was short and the awarding didn't take too long later in the day.

For the non-costume competition, the following won the hearts of the judges: First place went to Pepper (Gene Anthony Angkang, owner), second place was Yo (owned by Arfe/Toto), and Jollibee garnered 3rd place (Chesca Limjuco, owner).

Best in costume went to Rock Star costumed Pogs (owned by Jeffrey Palma), 2nd place went to Koy-Koy in a barong outfit (Miko Libot, owner), and 3rd place went to Ogre dressed in dragon wings (Bagani de Vera, owner). Even the other dogs are so lovable in their crazy get-ups. Sponsors of this event were Petstreet, Holy Kettle Korn, Kodak Victoria Plaza, Davaoexchange.com, and Narra.

We need more stress-relieving fun competitions like these, guys. My basset hound's raring to wear his own costume, too.

6th Mindanao ICT Congress timed for 1st EAGA ICT meet
Written by Walter I. Balane / MindaNews
Thursday, 21 June 2007 08 45 38

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/20 June) – This year’s Mindanao Information, Communications, and Technology (MICT) Congress on October 23 to 24 will be timed for the 1st East ASEAN Growth Area (EAGA) ICT Conference, organizers said.

It will be the first time the ICT industry will be the lead organizer in the congress which is on its sixth year.

Issues and concerns of the ICT stakeholders in Mindanao and hopes for a "borderless ICT cooperation" in the BIMP-EAGA is among the top agenda of the MICT Congress.

Earlier organizers announced that among the key issues to be raised is the possibility of a free-trade agreement as far as the ICT in the sub-region is concerned to make it "seamless".

The two significant events, organizers said, will pursue the initiatives of the past congresses which include providing a venue for networking, marketing, and business development and creation among ICT players.

The Congress aims to “enhance the human resource development program as the main requirement for business process outsourcing and e-services; and will identify areas for collaboration in the BIMP-EAGA particularly on human capital development, technology innovation ecosystem, and infrastructure development addressing digital divide and investment promotions.

The pace had been set for the holding of the congress, considered Mindanao's annual launching pad for ICT trends and issues. Next week, organizers will attend the Cebu ICT Congress to promote the Mindanao event.

A tri-partite partnership is preparing for the hosting of the two events.

The Mindanao Business Council (MinBC), Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII), and the ICT Davao, Inc formally signed the partnership agreement Wednesday during the TechnoKapihan forum at the Ateneo de Davao University.

Andre Fournier, one of the lead organizers told MindaNews the ICT Senior Ministers' Meeting of the BIMP East ASEAN Growth Area will also be held during the 1st BIMP EAGA ICT Forum. (Walter I. Balane/MindaNews)

by Romy Sabaldan

Davao City (22 June) -- For Rey Sumagaysay, one of the most experienced mountain climbers hereabouts, the challenge does not end upon reaching the country’s highest peak of Mt. Apo in the Davao-Cotabato regions.

Sumagaysay heads a mountaineering federation in Mindanao and also runs an outfit called EDGE Outdoors Adventure, the group that teaches and provides the skills and equipment for one to enlarge his vision and feel the freshness of nature..

His group encourages physical fitness using the outdoors from the mountains to the seas.

Being buoyed up by the belief that Davao City is the source of potential talents in adventure racing and kayaking, Sumagaysay looks to the sea this time for another adventure.

“We have the best talents in Davao as far as adventure and kayak racing is concerned,” Sumagaysay asserted during the latest Tuesday forum of the Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines (Scoop-Davao) of the Royal Mandaya Hotel, Davao City.

On Sunday, July 22, 2007, Sumagaysay’s group is organizing a kayak race among Davao enthusiasts using a 1.5 kilometer stretch off the shore of Times Beach, Matina, this city.

Ten teams in groups of four will be showcasing their prowess using this portable boat which is being propelled by a double-bladed paddle and is reputed to have crossed oceans.

Sumagaysay believes that introducing all sorts of play along the shores is one way of promoting the richness of the Davao Gulf not only in its renewable marine resources but also in water sports such as scuba diving and more recently kayaking. (PIA XI) [top]

yes, it was. even the old commercial buildings were usually demolished to give way to more modern ones.

toril still has old colonial houses in the daliao district. when i left left in 2000, furukawa still was standing, same with bureau of lands (all in toril). probably mintal still has some (i think the dacudaos still has their ancestral house). downtown, the lat, locsin, tiongko houses still are. sprinkled all around the city, we still have a lot, and i don't know how long as these are all made of wood. some will still last another 20 or more depending on how the current owners handle and use them.

Davao seeks equitable distribution of workers in BPO’ companies
by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (22 June) -- As major business process outsourcing (BPO) companies are already considering Davao City as their next location with two more big ones conducting assessment of the area, key industry players here are working on measures that will protect the business.

Andre Joseph T. Fournier, board of trustee of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) and chairman of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Management Information System (MIS) committees said they are coming up with agreements for the companies to work together for an equitable distribution of people.

Fournier said they do not want what is happening in Makati and in other areas in Manila to happen in Davao where cases of pouching are reported because of shortage of workers.

“Transaction is done during breaktime by recruiting officer and call center workers just outside their offices by offering them higher salaries,” he said.

He said these are the things that they would not want to happen even as he said that those companies already operating here are quite apprehensive once these big players come in with the huge manpower requirement that they would need.

He said there must be regular consultation and these companies must tell us their specific requirements so their need could be properly matched with institutions like schools.

Fournier said once they are here they should also take care of their employees, provide trainings as well as other benefits.

Fournier also said that these BPOs will also be given briefing on how to operate in Davao because of several ordinances that would protect workers.

“It is just a matter doing a regular consultation with the industry,” he said.

Meanwhile Fournier said 2007 will be Davao City’s year for ICT and they are committed to make it happen this year.

He said the industry is doing well and many good things are already working and one of this is the holding of the business plan competition in Davao that is the first outside Metro Manila.

Initiated by the Philippine Emerging Startups Open (PESO) Fournier said there would be about 60 entries and this is an opportunity for business plans to be presented to the business community.

“It is quite difficult for a beginner, like the students, to do a presentation with presidents and chief executive officers of companies all by themselves and this event is an opportunity,” he said.

He said there are a lot of good ideas in the region that are not given exposure. (PIA XI) [top]

Avenue S Restaurant in Davao City - Review
by Bob @ 2:41 pm. Filed under Food

http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/9176/avescp9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Today, for lunch, I invited my wife to go out for a nice meal, and she accepted. At first we had trouble trying to choose where we would go, but we decided to try something new! After some talk, we decided to go out to Damosa Gateway shopping center in Lanang, as there are a number of restaurants there that we have yet to try. Upon arriving at the shopping center area, we looked at the menues (which are conveniently posted outside each restaurant) and decided to try a place called “Avenue S”.
Avenue S Restaurant Davao

As we entered the place and looked around, we noticed that it was tastefully decorated, in sort of a “pub” type of atmosphere. It was comfortable, although the Air Conditioning could have been a bit cooler. The menu displayed a wide variety of different types of dishes from Filipino to American and even some Mexican meals too. My wife ordered a T-Bone steak, I ordered Mexican Beef Strips, and we also ordered a couple of appetizers: onion rings and french fries. The onion rings were superb! Fries - OK. Both of our entrees were great too. All in all, both of us said that we’d like to come back again!

Overall rating: 7 out of 10

If you are in Davao, Avenue S is well worth a try!

Restaurant Review: The Cafe Mediterranean
by Bob @ 2:18 am. Filed under Food

http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/4748/06212007033vi2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Hilda at The Cafe MediterraneanYesterday, I did something that I always enjoy, I took one of my nieces out for lunch. I enjoy going out with my nieces, because it gives me a chance to get to know them better, and also gives me a chance to spoil them at a restaurant where they would not normally go. It just feels good to do so. My nieces name who accompanied me for lunch is Hilda.

Hilda and I went out to a new restaurant in Davao which is named The Cafe Mediterranean. The Cafe Mediterranean is a franchise operation out of Manila. They serve, obviously, Mediterranean food - Greek, Italian, etc. A few night ago, Feyma and I took another of our nieces out to Tong Yang Restaurant, and I noticed The Cafe Mediterranean, which had recently opened right next door. This is outside Chimes Mall on Governor Sales Street in Davao. I haven’t had any Greek food for ages, so it has been on my mind ever since! So, I invited Hilda to go out on a date with her uncle to give it a try!

Immediately, when she saw the Gyro sandwiches on the menu (along with a photo) she told me that she wanted to have one, the picture looked so good! So, I ordered her a Gyro on regular Pita Bread, and I ordered one for myself on Whole Wheat Pita Bread. I also ordered some Greek Meatballs with Pita Bread as an appetizer.

Within just a few minutes, the waiter showed up at our table with our Gyro Sandwiches. Hmm… shouldn’t the appetizer have come first? Oh well, I was hungry, and the Gyro looked quite good. So, I dug in, as did Hilda! The sandwich was indeed excellent! I put a little garlic sauce on it, and also some spicy garlic sauce! Just the right blend! The sandwich was spicy, but still enjoyable for me. I would give the Gyro a very high review! After a while the Greek Meatballs came, and I gave them a try. They were good, although a little bit dry for my taste. I probably wouldn’t order them again, although there is plenty of food on the menu that I am sure I’d find many items that suited me fine, just like the Gyro. I was still a little hungry, so I decided to try the Tuscan Bean Soup, but unfortunately it was not available.

The ambiance of the place was first class. It really felt like a Greek eatery, or any kind of Mediterranean Cafe. Nice Decor, lots of customers all talking up a storm and having a good time! I enjoyed the lunch immensely! The food was great, and I had a great time talking with my niece as well! Thanks for accompanying me for lunch, Hilda!

My overall Rating for The Cafe Mediterranean: 4 Kulintang out of 5

as expected another report about this guys......

Rowdy Koreans
Confluence By Sonny T.Y. Garcia

We have seen the sudden and tremendous influx of Koreans to Davao
City. At present they have a casino dedicated only to them. Yes,
the big ballroom of Apo View Hotel has already been converted into a
casino last January 2007. Filipinos are not allowed to gamble
there. Other nationals are not allowed to gamble there. Only
Koreans!

The Koreans have also taken over the management of Lanang Golf and
Country Club. The owners of the course have opted to just rent it
out to the Koreans thereby assuring them of a hefty monthly income
without lifting a finger. Of course, the present members of the club
immediately became `second class citizens' due to the takeover of
management.

Korean restaurants have sprouted all over the city. The golf courses
have also been `attacked' by the Koreans benefiting a lot of people
in terms of income. Korean businesses have been established and
people get employed. In terms of finance, Davao City is reaping from
the Korean investments.

But there is a big cost. Ask any Filipino employee of Koreans and he
or she will tell you how strict the Korean employers are. Ask any
Filipino employee of Koreans and he or she will tell you that they
are not paid according to the duties and hard work that they do.

Most Davaoeños do not see what the male Koreans do. They roam about
various Karaoke bars throughout the city. And, more often than not,
these Koreans become rowdy when they start to drink. Their cultures
bring them to levels unacceptable to our very own. They prostitute
our women and they are so `bastos' and rude.

They are even bullish in our very own schools. Confluence has
gathered information that a 3rd year high school Korean studying at
the Ateneo de Davao University bullied a small classmate of his
thereby giving trauma to the poor kid. The Ateneo prefect of
discipline should do something about this. Such occurrence should
not be left unnoticed and discipline should be implemented
immediately.

We have to realize that most Koreans that come here to Davao are
actually from the lower middle sector of South Korea. And when they
come here they find themselves living like multi-millionaires with
the purchasing power of their money. These Koreans do not possess
the proper culture and such immediate monetary power tends to make
them very abusive.

A good classic case is the foregoing. They carry their own golf bags
in their country. They have to wait for months to be able to get an
appointment to play at their country's golf courses. And they have
to pay a hefty sum to play golf.

In Davao City, they can afford to hire a caddy to carry their golf
sets. They can even afford to hire umbrella girls to shield them
from the hot sun. And they pay so little golf green fees compared to
what they pay in their country.

This sudden change of status makes them rowdy, unruly, disorderly,
noisy, loud, raucous, disruptive and boisterous. These Koreans
should be restrained. If not, it will not be a surprise if some of
them will get murdered or killed. No, Confluence is not promoting or
threatening violence. But Confluence can only stress that the
present trend of the Korean situation is going to a dangerous state.

Educated Koreans would understand. Those nagpakaarung-ingnon are typically the lower kind of kimchis in their own land!

^^ lemme just share my personal experience here in Cebu when I was dealing with Koreans few months ago. I had direct conversations (in English of course) with some Koreans here in Cebu inquiring for our condo units. They were so rude, impatient, and bossy. Murag mga kinsa kung mo asta. But it turned out na mga pobre ra diay. They cant even afford the membership of our club (which on that time was around 227,700 pesos - the most affordable one). But not all of them are like that..although, ubay ubay pud ang mga gago na koreans....But there are also a number of educated and respected Koreans who know how to carry themselves and know how to respect Pinoys. And most of those kinds of Koreans are those na nakaafford sa among condo project here in Cebu. Hilom hilom ra, murag d makabuak og baso tan-awon, pero dato, bright na, buotan pa!

The alumni office plans to feature other landmarks around our AdDU campuses in future ePosts - like the arch into Davao's very own China Town presently under contruction on Magsaysay Ave. "Ganito tayo noon, paano na kami ngayon!" Hope those who live abroad will consider coming to Davao for a visit.

Sa akong tan-aw (in my look- in allusion to STOP ME! tigilan mo ako!) I like the trend of development. Urban sprawl springs from the big city and trickles down to the booming districts and farther down to nearby townships (char!) and cities like Sta. Cruz, Digos, Panabo, Sto, Tomas, Tagum, Samal, Mati< Nabunturan, COmpostela, Monkayo and so on.

Hilom hilom ra, murag d makabuak og baso tan-awon, pero dato, bright na, buotan pa!

ako naman... my experience with korean tourist dati most of them are bossy, that was last year. nagagalit kaagad pag hinihingian ng ID, kung saan nakatira, etc. pero lately, most koreans ive encountered are mababait, they patiently follow what ive instructed them to do in filling up forms, kung saan sila nag-isstay dito sa davao and they try hard to communicate in english.

btw, there are at least 5 buses intended for korean tourists ang nakaabang sa apo view araw-araw.

Whether they like it or not....Call centers boom in Davao!

BELIEVE it or not, Davao City has now six Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) establishments, all of them is into Call Center Operations. (Call centers are now more appropriately contact centers.-publisher). One of these six is contemplating to increase its capacities to 1,000 more terminals which means we are looking at exactly the same number of new jobs for Dabawenyos. But we are talking of only one firm here. With the business climate in Davao and the quality of graduates that we have, expect more call centers to locate or relocate here. The happy note about this is that local entrepreneurs are now investing in this admittedly profitable business.

Davao by the way has been a good hunting ground for call center operators based in Cebu and Manila. Our graduates can easily be trained to speak with American twang, so they say. The other hunting ground is Dumaguete City. We had been losing our graduates to Cebu and Manila operators but with the number of call centers cropping out, we will be able to stave off further drain from our employable pools.

The Davao advantage aside from what I already said, is that for a salary of P10,000 for a starter, the need for manpower can easily be met. However, call center operators are apprehensive that they might encounter the same fate as in Cebu and Manila, where newcomers in the business and those who had been there and are expanding, have resorted to the practice of poaching from their manpower pool by offering a few pesos more to salary. This practice of dubious propriety can paralyze their operations. They do not mind losing their employees for as long as they stay with them for at least 18 months. They said that they conduct training for new recruits and that translates to a substantial amount of money. Training is an investment and they need to recoup their expenses within the period of 18 months.

This is the kind of pleasant problem that we are looking for. The operators said that recently they already brought down their requirement for new recruits from college graduate to at least 2nd year college. What is important is that the applicants have to be at least 23 years old. At this age they consider a person emotionally stable and patient and not confrontational. In Manila, some call center operators already accepts high school graduates provided they are trainable.

I talked to an operator about their experience with communications line provider. Joji Ilagan had earlier complained having experienced a 7-hour downtime from her provider. I think that the best way to avert this problem is to have a redundant system. It is good to be getting from competing firms. Just be sure that wherever you get your communications highway from, they have the capability. There are internet link providers in the city who do not have their own backbone of communications and are just leasing from other firms and farm out the capacities to other subscribers for profit. Do not be fooled by advertisements.

To allay piracy, some operators have linked up with the Department of Trade and Industry and the City government and have asked some members of the City Council to intercede and avoid the piracy of employees in call centers. Vice Mayor Louie Bonguyan (who is eyeing the BPO accountancy business) and the Council Committee Chair for Trade, Pete Lavina, were there to give an ear to their plaint. Pete promised he will study the matter while Louie said he will look at the prospects. I say accept the reality of piracy and be prepared to lose some and keep some. And continue recruiting and training, improve on working conditions, amenities and perks. I am sure that employees will stick to the company whom they think are looking after their welfare and not only for their profits.

Agree with you, Dr. Jude!

I guess it's incumbent upon the city government to lay all the foundations before they allow anything in. They did sales pitches in foreign countries and they were successful nonetheless as evidenced by the deluge of koreans, et. al. However, they succeeded on one hand yet failed on the other. Laws should have been out and enforced if not mulled and passed in the beginning. Now, they look awful blaming the koreans for what has befallen the city when in the first place they don't have to look elsewhere to know the genesis of the problem.

New Generoso Bridge I to be concrete: Duterte
By Grace L. Plata

DAVAO City will get a concrete bridge in place of the post-war Governor Generoso Bridge 1, which collapsed in April this year and not the steel bridge that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has emergency materials for.

This was confirmed Thursday night by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte.

"I was informed tonight by Bebot Marfori who took the cudgels of talking to the president regarding the bridge that a decision has been made and we will be given a concrete bridge instead of a steel one. The president herself texted Marfori to confirm," Duterte said.

Madeline "Bebot" Dizon-Marfori is the chief executive of FS Dizon Agricultural Company founded by her late father Don Francisco "Paco" Dizon. She is also one of the President's consultants on Mindanao concerns.

Duterte, however, added the construction of the concrete bridge would require a longer time frame than a steel bridge.

"The December deadline cannot be met. We need two to three months more para matapos ito kasi meron pang curing period," Duterte said.

The mayor asked the public to be patient especially now that help is on the way.

this goes without saying that these tourist blitz campaigns they are doing in NIC's like taiwan, macau, china and korea are starting to reap new social problems for us.... we should commend those city officials who were able to recognize the dilemma of mass tourism at this early stage.... i don't want davao to turn into another Angeles City (or Cebu City) .... I want to see foreigners integrating themselves with the locals, getting attuned to our cultural and social values... and not building their own colonies imo

This is what I can say.

this goes without saying that these tourist blitz campaigns they are doing in NIC's like taiwan, macau, china and korea are starting to reap new social problems for us.... we should commend those city officials who were able to recognize the dilemma of mass tourism at this early stage.... i don't want davao to turn into another Angeles City (or Cebu City) .... I want to see foreigners integrating themselves with the locals, getting attuned to our cultural and social values... and not building their own colonies imo

And all we need is to make the laws and enforce them.

I am sure that employees will stick to the company whom they think are looking after their welfare and not only for their profits.

congrats tj! nagbunga na ang email mo kay jojie ilagan-bian.

Mayor doesn't care for travel advisories
By Grace L. Plata

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte doesn’t care less if the United States and other countries issue travel advisories against traveling to Davao City or Mindanao as a whole.

"It is a government's prerogative to do that in order to protect its people. My part is to protect the Dabawenyos that is why I do not want military men of other countries tinkering with bombing investigations here. Kay kana sila, ginasunod sa gubot maong (Trouble follows them everywhere that's why) the bigger the tendency for bombing while they are here," Duterte said.

The mayor was leery about American investigators coming in whenever a bomb incident occurs saying this will lead to dependency of sorts.

"Everytime nga naay putok, tawagon sila (there's an explosion they are called in). That would mean the Americans have the solutions, di na Pilipino (not the Filipinos)," Duterte said.

According to Duterte, the Filipinos are well-equipped to deal with the problem and solve it.

"We understand the problem and are agitating for reforms that will serve justice. That is enough to start with," Duterte said.

On another issue, Duterte said the MILF's opposition to Fr. Eliseo R. Mercado's appointment as head of the negotiating panel is valid.

"The person the government should appoint must be someone who loves his fellowmen equally, must understand the problem and its root, aims to correct the wrong, somebody who does not want to fight and can transcend over the religious issues," Duterte said.

Duterte also said that there should be no griping over the Mercado issue as the government has corrected it in time.

Duterte, however, refused to comment on the resignation of government peace panel head Silvestre Afable Sr. saying the issue now is to find somebody up for the job.

MOA for call centers' kinship to be drafted
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
THE Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII) revealed that they are on the process of drafting a memorandum of agreement to establish harmonious relationship among the call center companies in Davao City.

Andrei Fournier, member of the DCCCII's Board of Trustees, said Wednesday that the memorandum of agreement (MOA) will be initiated so that no call center company will "pirate" personnel or call center agent from another call center companies that operate in the city.

"We do not want that call center companies in Davao will be like some call centers in Manila na nagpa-pirate ng agents ng ibang call centers doon, the agreement will be for the harmonious relationship of the call centers here," Fournier said.

Fournier said DCCCII is working very hard to bring Davao City to the forefront in terms of information and communications technology (ICT) and the agreement is one of the chamber's efforts in order to achieve this goal.

"We will continue to push all sectors to work together, this year will be very heavy and critical for the ICT industry," Fournier said, adding that Davao City will be hosting one of the biggest events this October and this is the 6th Mindanao ICT Congress.

On Thursday, DCCCII officials, together with some officials from the regional office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Southern Mindanao converged for a meeting regarding the initiation of the memorandum of agreement at the Marco Polo Hotel.

The largest economy by metropolitan benchmark, it serves as the hub of travel and tourism to spokes of cities and provinces across Mindanao.

Physical Infrastructure
The presence of basic infrastructure within the City such as airport, seaports, roads, bridges, and telecommunications has sustained the economic growth in the last 10 years.

Due to the City’s unprecedented growth, a clamor for higher capacity infrastructures resulted to a number of modernization projects now ongoing to meet the demands of the new millennium.

Airport
The Davao International Airport is the busiest airport in Southern Philippines. Expansion and modernization began in 1998. Today, the DIA has begun accommodating wider-bodied jets such as Boeing 747’s.

With an aggressive private sector assisting the government in the development of the city, Davao was able to nab prestigious awards and recognition for their efforts, such as being constantly acclaimed as one of Asia's most livable cities by the Asiaweek Magazine; bagging the best city police office in the country, a testimony of the city's effort in ensuring peace and order; consistently on the top of the list of the annual search for the cleanest and greenest city in the Philippines; and the prestigious Destination of the Year honor given by the Kalakbay Awards (National Tourism Awards). Davao is also proud to have the second best source of potable water in the world according to the World Health Organization, assuring guests of good health while staying in the city. Davao is also the most competitive metro city in the Philippines for consecutive surveys (AIM 2003 and 2005).

Davao City, the undisputed center of trade, convention and tourism in Mindanao, is indeed booming and blooming as it continues its aim in becoming the prime destination for tourism and investments in the Philippines, the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Philippines-Malaysia East ASEAN Growth Area) and the Asia-Pacific region.

Prepare yourself for an unforgettable stay in the country's southern gateway to Asia and the rest of the world: Davao City, the City in Bloom!

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/021dc0fc.jpg

Why Davao?

DAVAO, the city of blooms from islands to highlands.

Indeed, Davao City is blooming and booming. Investments in terms of total capitalization of businesses continued to surge from only P62 billion in 2000 to P69 billion in 2001, P80 billion in 2002, P84 billion in 2003, and to P118.5 billion in 2004. The sharp growth was evident in the city's tourism, construction, agriculture, and export sectors.

Tourist arrivals based on air passenger traffic and hotel occupancy volume have been increasing since 2000. Davao City's tourism receipts as of the first semester of 2005 amounted to P5.22 billion, up 13 percent from P4.62 billion in the first half of 2004.

Also, this city has recorded an unprecedented increase in the value of private building construction, hitting P7.4 billion in 2004 from only P773 million in 2001.

So did exports, rising to $993 million in 2004 from $848 million in 2003 and $738 million in 2002, with the balance of trade further widening in Davao City's favor.

"These figures are making Davao City even more attractive to tourists, many of whom are corporate executives and entrepreneurs on vacation who can't ignore a business opportunity when they see one," said ATF 2006 secretary general Daniel Corpuz, executive director of Philippine Convention and Visitors Corp.

Davao is the capital of the Southern Mindanao region and one of the world's largest cities in terms of land area, spanning 244,000 hectares. This sprawling metropolis has emerged as the business, investment and tourism hub of Southern Philippines.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/marcokad.jpg

Citing Davao City as the next pillar of Philippine tourism, Tourism Secretary Robert Ace Durano said it was President Arroyo's personal choice as the venue for ATF 2006.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/TheApoView.jpg

The 25th ATF is expected to significantly boost Davao's economy and prop up investor confidence in the region and the rest of the Philippines.

Tourism had contributed substantially to Mindanao's expanding economy, posting growth of 4.4 percent in 2002 and 4.5 percent in 2003 and consistently accounting for about nine million of national employment.

There have been remarkable increments in the region's air and sea transport volumes, both passengers and cargo, because of increased tourism activities particularly in Southern and Northern Mindanao, which posted more than 1.2 million foreign and domestic tourists. The international airport in Southern Mindanao's tourism and investment hub recorded around 1.4 million incoming and outgoing passengers in 2004, while hotel occupancy rates posted a 6.5-percent increase in the January-June 2005 from the year-earlier level.

The impact of these developments can be felt throughout the region's economic landscape, especially in the food, transport, hotel, resort, entertainment, recreation, retailing, and services sectors.

Davao's Achievements and Awards

Most Competitive Metro City in the Philippines, 2001, 2003, 2005
The Asian Institute of Management has conducted an assessment of the leading Cities in the country using indicators such as quality of life, cost of doing business, dynamism of the local economy, infrastructure, linkages and accessibility, and quality of workforce in the years 2001, 2003, and 2005 (No survey was done in 2002 and 2004) and Davao City topped the rankings in 2001 and 2005 and placed 3rd in 2003.

Most Livable City in the Philippines
Based on annual surveys made by Asiaweek on the 40 Best Cities in Asia, Davao City has consistently made it to the Top 20 for four consecutive years (1996-1999). In the survey of livability, Davao City rated high in the following categories:

2nd in the least number of criminal cases per 10,000 at 0.8
5th in lesser vehicles per km of city road at 46 vehicles/km
6th in the ratio of house price to income at 6.18
14th in lesser volume of suspended particles in the air at 98 ?g/m³
14th in value of state education spending per capita/$ at 410.80

Davao garnered 56 points and ranked 18th. Cebu got 54 points and ranked 19th while Manila was in a freefall with 49 points down at 25th.

This statistics mean that Davao City has become the Most Livable City in the Philippines. If the survey, which is independently done by Asiaweek, becomes a basis, it could be said that Davao has maintained its quality of livability as a city and is in fact improving on it.

Destination of the Year, 1997 Kalakbay Awards
1997 was supposed to be the banner year of Davao City having earned a lot of distinctions in the national arena. Aside from being chosen as the Destination of the Year by the Kalakbay Awards, tourism facilities within the city were also recognized with the highest honors in their respective categories such as Hotel of the Year for Villa Margarita and Restaurant of the Year for Annies Restaurant.

Most Child-friendly City in the Philippines, 1999, 2000
In the first ever selection of the Most Child-Friendly City in the Philippines, Davao City came out the runaway choice for the top plum owing to its local government’s programs and initiatives directly benefiting its children.

Davao City stood out because it is the first local government unit to have passed a Code specifically designed for the welfare of the children and their rights to services, Protection, and other privileges - this is the Davao City Children’s Welfare Code of 1994.

Aside from the regular social welfare programs being implemented by the City Social Services and Development Office, the local government works closely with non-government agencies that implements programs for children.

The Davao City Government also got high marks because of its implementation of the child welfare and protection programs under the Country Program for Children – UNICEF.

Most Outstanding Regional Peace and Order Council, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005
The quest for peace has become very expensive and very elusive in some isolated parts of Mindanao. However, there is one region where peace has become a price possession that its leaders never want such ideal condition slip out from their hands – the Region XI Peace and Order Council was chosen as the Most Outstanding Regional Peace and Order Council for their unrelenting efforts in maintaining peace and order in Southern Mindanao or Region XI.

Most Peaceful City in East and Southeast Asia, 1998-2005
One of the biggest come-ons of an area is an ideal peace and order condition. The dramatic decrease of crime rate in Davao City is big deal considering that it used to have a very unstable peace and order during the Marcos’ regime that ended in a bloodless revolution in February 1986.

Since then, peace and order has never been more ideal. In fact, it improves year after year thanks to a people who will not let peace slip away like a prized possession.

From a 3-digit crime rate per 10,000 people in 1985, Davao has reached an almost Utopian environment with a monthly crime volume of 0.8 cases per 10,000 persons from 1999 up to 2005. Digging through the records, it would reveal that about 90% of these cases reported are petty crimes that do not in any way threaten the over-all peace and order condition of the city.

Best Police Office in the Country, 1999-2005
Annually, the Philippine National Police conducts an evaluation of the Best Police Offices in the Country. They will be evaluated and ranked according to the ratio of policemen against the population of the area, implementation of programs for maintenance of peace and order, availability of sophisticated equipment and vehicles, the ratio of solved crimes against the total number of crimes reported and the overall safeguarding of the peace and order condition of the area.

2nd place, LGU Literacy Award in the Philippines, 1999
This award is given to local government units that seek to improve literacy within their area through programs that will ensure the establishment of learning institutions even in the most remote rural areas. Davao City ranked a close second in this competition having registered one of the highest literacy rates in the country and in Southeast Asia at 98.05%.

2nd Best City Health Office in the Philippines, 1999
Vaccines, medicines, and clinical and medical services may cost much nowadays. A local government unit should see to it that medical services are affordable if not given for free especially to rural folks and the urban poor. In this area of recognition, the local Government of Davao again ranked a close second in operating a City Health Office that delivers free and or very affordable services to its constituents aside from implementing health programs that focuses on prevention of sickness and illnesses.

The Cleanest and Greenest City in the Philippines, 1999-2005
(Highly urbanized category)
For almost a decade, Davao City ranked Second Cleanest and Greenest City in the Philippines. Visitors cannot but help notice that the city’s roads are indeed clean day and night and the parks are eternally green with trees and ornamentals. But the top plum seems slippery because of an open dumpsite located along its diversion road.

Now, the City is considered the Cleanest and Greenest in the Philippines
(For the highly urbanized category)

Most Outstanding Water Utility in Asia, 1996, 1997, 1998
(Awarded in Singapore to Davao City Water District)
This recognition was given to four water utilities in Asia, and Davao City’s water district is one of them. The Davao City Water District has through the years supplied quality potable water to residents of the city.

The need to deliver quality service is equally complemented by the natural abundance of fresh and potable water supply, which contributes to the quality of life in the City. Around 90% of the City’s water supply is taken from a more than 30 wells while the remaining 10% is treated surface water.

The Davao City Water District (DCWD) has made piped water system available to about 70% of the population. This figure may be surprisingly low for people expecting a highly urbanized city. However, a visit to the City will show that hundreds of natural wells and other natural sources of spring water abound in the City, particularly in areas near the foot of the highest peak in the country, the Mt. Apo.

Davao's Titles and Monikers

Orchid Capital of the Philippines
There are beautifully vivid reasons why Davao is called the “City in Bloom”. Aside from the presence of vast plantations and garden resorts that grow rare and exotic orchids and ornamentals, the City is specifically known among florists all over the world for its famous waling-waling, considered as one of the most beautiful orchids.

The Waling-waling or vanda sanderana grows in natural abundance in its territory, at the foot of Mt. Apo. Orchids just love to grow majestically in the City because of its typhoon-free weather. Add to that the fact that the city has more than 1,000 square kilometers of lush tropical forest (or about 47% of its total land area) that provided an environment conducive for rare plants to thrive and flourish. Another factor is the rich fertile soil of the city that can virtually make every wind-blown seed grow and bear fruit even without the benefit of human intervention. Virtually, all ingredients are present for Davao City to blossom and bloom magically like the waling-waling.

All these factors contributed to the eventual declaration of Davao City as the official “Orchid Capital of the Philippines” as declared by then President Corazon Aquino.

Fruit Basket of the Philippines- the City of Durian burg
The freshest tropical fruits are always ripe for the picking in a City called Fruit Basket of the Philippines. Whether you’ll go for the juiciest watermelon, the sweetest mango, the more succulent pomelo, rambutan, or go subtly fruit ferocious with banana, mangosteen, lanzones, strawberry, pineapple, avocado, langka, buko, or simply settle with a bowl of fresh fruit salad to end the long list, whatever fibrous or juicy fruits you have in mind, you’ll definitely have your fill in Davao City.

Orchards and fruit plantations continually make the city livable if only for its produce of the freshest fruits giving visitors a glimpse of what it would be like in the Garden of Eden with the exotic Durian (the King of the Fruits or the Fruit of the Gods) serving as the fruit of good and evil with its strong aroma (or pungent odor) overpowered by its heavenly taste which you would not want to exchange for anything. Come to the City of Durianburg and partake of the glorious delights of fruits made in the heavenly realms.

Home of the Great Bird of Asia –Soaring high in the new millennium
No one in the early 80’s would have thought that Davao, like its symbol and icon- the Philippine eagle, would soar to new heights in the new millennium.

No one ever thought too that the mighty Philippine Eagle (pithecophaga jefferyi) considered as the 2nd largest eagle in the world and threaten for extinction as early as the 70’s, would have survived the onslaught of denudation and other factors that continually threaten its natural habitat – the forest.

Thanks mainly to joint efforts of concern government and non-government organizations, captive breeding of this great bird of Asia has resulted to the birth of more than a dozen eagles (hatched in captivity) and we have welcomed the new millennium with them still lording the skies over the forest and vegetation around Mt. Apo.

The Philippine Eagle is a faithful mate. It has been observed that this bird usually prefers a monogamous lifestyle. It usually builds its nest on towering tropical trees about 80 feet above the ground (sufficient enough for it to have a good view over its territory).

Philippine Eagles breed between August and January, do aerial courtships and mate in or near their nest. The female lays one egg every two years and both parents alternately incubate the egg for about 60 days until it hatches. The eaglet fledges within 150 days and becomes independent at 18 months at which time the parents drive it out of their 60 to 100 kilometer radius territories.

With its habitat dwindling due to illegal logging, the Philippine Eagle Foundation, Inc. was organized in 1987 to implement programs such as captive breeding management, field research, community-based enterprise development, and conservation education.

Convention Center of the Philippine South
With more convention and exhibition centers being established that have complemented other excellent tourism facilities, Davao City has steadily positioned itself as the Convention Center of the Philippine South in the 21st century.

Since 1990, it has steadily become the preferred destination for conventions and conferences. This could be attributed to the ever changing and ever improving economic and tourism landscape of the city, which attracted organizers to conduct major conventions here instead of proverbial settings like Manila or Cebu.

Modern, sophisticated, and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for conventions and conferences are now readily available. This is equally complemented by the establishment of new first class hotels and mountain resorts bringing the number of hotel rooms from around 500 in 1980 to over 2,500 in 1999. Yet, the demand for more hotel rooms is projected to increase now that the City has more tourism products, services, and facilities to offer.

Gateway to the East ASEAN
Davao City, the birthplace of the East ASEAN Growth Area (or EAGA), is also your gateway to this emerging polygon of power. The EAGA was formed mainly because the areas that comprised it (Mindanao and Palawan for the Philippines, Brunei, Manado and North Sulawesi of Indonesia, and Sabah for Malaysia) used to be a trading bloc during the 12th century up to the 15th century where people enjoyed borderless economies with barter trading as the most common economic practice. Centuries of colonialism, imperialism and the establishment of governments within the chain of islands halted the exchanges.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/bimpmap.jpg

In 1994, government representatives and businessmen from these areas have gathered together in Davao City for the biggest convention ever held in the region to formally signal the birth of the newest trading bloc in Asia, the BIMP-EAGA. In the heart of this formation is Davao City, which paved the way for the re-establishment of cooperation between the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia to advance the free movement of people, goods, services, and improve cultural and economic ties within the said sub-regional trade bloc.

Through these developments, direct air and sea linkages to the islands have been established making Davao City your gateway to the East ASEAN growth area.

Mongrels to be trained as bomb-sniffing dogs
By Ben O. Tesiorna

MOVE aside German Shepherds, Labradors and other imported breed of bomb-sniffing dogs because the Philippine askals are here.

Askals, short for asong kalye (street dogs), or mongrels, are now being trained to become specialized bomb-sniffing dogs that would eventually replace all these very expensive breed of dogs.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage

View here the list of local winners

The Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco) said they have received numerous requests from several security agencies including the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines for training on the handling and breeding of mongrels as bomb-sniffers.

Milva Carinan, Medco senior economic development specialist, said even the security personnel of the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (Bimp-Eaga) have also requested the same and that they will soon be conducting trainings for such purpose.

Carinan said the idea of training mongrels as bomb-sniffers was actually started by a dog handler from General Santos City identified as one Rowel Deguia.

The three-day seminar on breeding and handling of mongrels as security dogs will be conducted next month with several security personnel from different agencies all over Mindanao expected to attend.

Carinan said the trainees meanwhile will impart what they have learned from the seminar to their respective agencies upon their return.

Bomb-sniffing mongrels are reportedly trained while they are still puppies. Deguia was said to have proven that bomb-sniffing ability could also be adapted by mongrels if trained at a young stage.

Compared to high-breed dogs, mongrels are much cheaper and easier to handle. High-breed bomb-sniffing dogs cost at least P1 million each not including the cost for its food and maintenance.

A mongrel meanwhile can just be seen loitering around and could be fed leftovers. (With Peng Aliño)

Santacruzan in city
By Janette Huang Teves
Mom-about town

THERE are a lot of activities that parents and their children can accomplish in the mall these days. Pampering time at the spa, check! Play time in the arcade, check! Eating at your favorite restaurant, check! Driver's license renewal, check!

What about watching the Santacruzan procession in the comforts of an air-conditioned mall? Check! Yes, you read it right; this age-old custom has now invaded the family's well-loved tambayan.

Santacruzan

The Santacruzan is a procession that parades biblical and historical characters which are represented by Sagalas (literally meaning "little shepherdess") dressed in appropriately themed costumes. It is held in many cities, towns and even small villages throughout the Philippines during the month of May.

The festivity commemorates the search of the Holy Cross by Queen Helena (Reyna Elena) and her son, the newly converted emperor Constantine. After the Holy Cross was found in Jerusalem and brought back to Rome, there was a joyful celebration for thanksgiving.

Project Runway

During the last week of May, I had the honor to be one of the judges of the Sagala gown competition organized by SM City Davao, City Mayor's Office and City Tourism Office at SM City Davao's Entertainment Plaza. Now on its 4th year, the Santacruzan grand parade was held both inside and outside the mall.

Together with other judges Mindanao Times columnist Architect Michael Dacudao, Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional Director Sonia Garcia, Mindanao Insider columnist Dr. Gary Sicam and multi-awarded fashion designer Emy Ingles, we evaluated the exquisite gowns based on the following criteria: PRE-JUDGING--creativity, 25 percent and craftsmanship, 25 percent; DURING THE PARADE--hang and fit, 25 percent and Santacruzan appeal, 25 percent.

Ten talented homegrown designers vied for this year's best Sagala gown design award, namely: Ronan Opina, Wendell Mira, John Paul Valderasa, Peter Recto, Alfred Cabiles, Jay-R Magdaleno, Boyet Agpon, Marc Bernalte, Pei Tiambeng, Don Mascarinas, and Manny Deiparine.

Winning designs

The Reyna del Cielo (Queen of the Heaven) Sagala gown of Don Mascarinas grabbed the grand prize. His marvelous creation donned by model Reslyn Mendoza was a body-hugging tangerine serpentine gown made of shantung and embroidered organza with dramatic extended panuelo. The panuelo was quite unique with its horsehair and bone wire combined with an appliqu‚ lace laden with Swarovski crystals and rhinestone. It was neatly tucked into electric pleated materials together with the feathers.

Mascarinas took home a cash prize of P20,000 and a plaque.

On the other hand, Peter Recto, a budding designer under the mentorship of award winning designer Garimon Roferos, was declared as first runner-up winner for his Reyna de las Estrellas (Queen of Stars) masterpiece. He won a cash prize of P10,000. His dainty creation was gracefully modeled by Mutya ng Dabaw 2004 Aileen Cainglet.

Recto's modern aquamarine full body and sexy off-shoulder ball gown was filled with Swarovski crystals in gold sequins with sea creature-inspired patterns.

And, finally, the second runner-up award with a cash prize of P8,000 was given to Jay-R Magdaleno for his Reyna Fe (Queen of Faith) creation. Magdaleno is a resident designer of Racquel's.

As Reyna Fe symbolizes the virtue of faith, Magdalenos' one-of-a kind design was a traditional Filipiniana gown with patch and table mats accentuated by beadworks and cross pendants. It was made of royal blue silk and white duchess silk. In addition, the bodice and skirt were full quilt and pleated details embellished with beads, sequins and crystals. Mutya ng Dabaw 2007 Clarisse Ann Escala was stunning and doll-like in this whimsical creation.

Non-winning designers for the gowns of Reyna Banderada, Reyna Mora, Reyna Sheba, Reyna Esther, Rosa Mystica, Reyna de las Propetas and Reyna de las Virgines, received consolation prizes of P3,000 each and plaques of appreciation.

Family affair

The venue was packed with families who were all eager to look at the spectacular gowns and the elegant ladies all dolled up. For many of the children, it was their first time to see this most-awaited Filipino tradition up close.

In addition, students from the Magallanes Elementary School took part in the afternoon procession.

Eight girls wearing angel costumes carried individual letters to complete the word "AVE MARIA" while adorable boys and girls clad in Filipino costumes gamely carried the colorful banners of the parade.

Some of the other Santacruzan participants included Reyna Esperanza, Reyna Caridad, Reyna Abogada, Reyna Sentenciada, Reyna Justicia Reyna Judith, Samaritana, Veronica, Mary Mother of James, Reyna Paz, Reyna de las Flores and Reyna Elena.

I am sharing to you photos of this successful affair. (For your comments and suggestions, you may e-mail me at mom.about.town.dvo@gmail.com)

All Roads Lead to Biggest Food Event
By Josie San Pedro Published : 2007-06-22

THE Food Basket Capital of the country, Davao, hosts once again the biggest technology based food exposition of the region, FPP Mindanao 2007, Food Processing and Packaging Technology Expo from 20 to 23, 2007 at the Bangko Sentral Plenary Hall, Davao City from 10am to 7pm daily.

Powered by WOFEX (World Food Expo), the country’s biggest food exposition held annually every 1st week August in Manila, FPP Mindanao enjoys the tag of being the Most Focused Food Event in the Region. For its 2nd edition, the expo is bigger and better being participated in by major players in the F&B industry of packaging machineries and supply, food additives and ingredients, food processing equipment and materials, refrigeration, bakery supplies, food services supplies, specialty food & beverage among many others.

In 2006, FPP Mindanao generated more than 87 million pesos in trade on-site and future sales. FPP Mindanao was able to hit its markets for the exhibitors and visitors, thus, the event served as a one-stop shop for all their supply needs, assisting in the expansion and modernization of the region’s growing food and beverage industry.

This 2007, FPP Mindanao shall remain and continue to be a catalyst to the economic activity in Mindanao and in the coming years.

Alongside the exposition, free seminars/technical sessions will be conducted by industry experts during the 4-day event on topics such as vacuum frying, in-bottle technology, modern refrigeration, viscosity measurement, cooling technologies, factory lay-out, food hygiene, long shelf life, packaging for the local and export market, HACCP among many others. Free workshops will also take place on topics such as fruit drying, cake decorating, doughnut and pizza making, making local pastries, making spreads and pastes using abundant fruit and vegetable supply in Mindanao.

FPP Mindanao 2007, Food Processing and Packaging Technology Expo is supported by the following: Department of Science and Technology (Cagayan/Cotabato/Caraga), Department of Trade and Industry Davao, Department of Agriculture, Davao Tourism Association, Food Processors of Davao, Gensan Tuna Canners, Minfruit, Kidapawan Fruit and Vegetable Growers, Cagayan de Oro Hotel and Restaurant Association (COHARA), Board of Investment (BOI), Chamber of Agriculture Fisheries & Food Industry of Northern Mindanao (CAFFINORMIN), National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), Cooperative Development Council (CDC), Food Processors Association of Northern Mindanao (FOPANORMIN), General Santos Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Northern Mindanao Pineapple Industry Association, PHILEXPORT XI, Regional Cooperative Development Council, Davao Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Zamboanga Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Philippine Amalgamated Supermarkets Association (PAG-ASA), Hotel & Restaurants Association of the Philippines (HRAP), Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (General Santos, South Cotabato, Zambasulta, Allah Valley, Cagayan de Oro, lake Lanao).

... and i like their breeding... hindi sila ala "ginapala-ginapiko" you know what i mean... ...they have their own style, they are aristocratic in bearing but still they can manage to be very pleasant ... and mind you, people there have good dictions, perhaps the only city after davao with a relatively high rating in terms of linguistic competencies, no wonder they are also a good source of call center agents imo lang ha....... i don't know, probably, this is due to their iberian traits ...

Canon Davao is leading branch in RP
Friday, June 22 2007 @ 05:11 PM BST

Business
The Davao branch of Canon Marketing Philippines Inc. is leading in terms of sales among its other branches in the country, according to Nelson Perez, regional sales manager of Canon.

Canon is just among the 27 exhibitors currently participating in the three-day exhibit sale of Computer Manufacturers, Distributors and Dealers Association of the Philippines (COMDDAP) Davao 2007 at the Davao Convention and Trade Center. The event ends Friday.

Perez, who is based in Manila but was assigned here in Davao City last year, said Canon has five branches but Davao sales is growing tremendously every year.

Davao is the only Canon branch in Mindanao. The other branches are in Cebu, Legaspi, Pampanga and La Union. The main branch is in Makati City.

"We have a 32-percent growth of our sales last year and we are expecting to increase more this year," he said.

Perez said cameras and copiers are the top sellers among its products.

"What is unique to us is that we are keeping on bringing latest innovations and introduce them to the public," he said.

Canon is selling digital copier, document scanner and recorder, multi-media projector, document camera, printer and scanner, digital camera and video, digital SLR and lenses, and facsimile and wide-format printer. (PNA)

RP is HK's favorite playground

"We got a bigger exhibit area, tapped Hong Kong celebrities as endorsers, and launched a campaign. We are currently promoting Cebu, Davao, Palawan, Subic and Boracay. Next year, we might see Bicol region included in the list with its vast and varied attractions like the ‘whale shark interaction’ in Sorsogon and the CamSur Watersports Complex in Camarines Sur," Bueno explained.

Lemme just stress out one thing........in Mindanao - when it comes to tourism, everyone's focus is DAVAO!
