Dumoy Garden Resort http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/5475/dumoypicspp7.jpg (http://imageshack.us) A garden beach resort located in Davao City, Philippines. The resort is located at barrio Dumoy in Toril. It is approximately thirteen (13) km. south of Davao City's center and about five (5) km. north of the central district of Toril. It's approximately 25 min from the airport and the city proper. It boasts of friendly staff and a relaxing environment, where one can wile their weekends away, far from the stress and heat of city living. Very popular with out of towners who visit the city from other provinces but prefer to take advantage of hotel like accomodations and the peace and calmness that the seaside brings. Aside from being a resthouse, it is also a venue for seminars, weddings and parties. http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/7561/mapgd7.jpg (http://imageshack.us) http://www.dumoygarden.com/ Is this the one adjacent to Mergrande?? I know there are more young bloods like her now in the city council - tender in age yet strong in character...:) davaoeagle June 26th, 2007, 07:30 PM Sunday, May 13, 2007 Highland and beach Sundays (First published in the Mindanao Insider, May 7, 2007, Monday) http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/3300/forestcf4.png (http://imageshack.us) For two Sundays now, I’ve been lucky to cover events in both the highlands and lowlands of Davao. Earth Day (April 22) was spent covering Eden Nature Park’s activities for the event. It must have been the only resort that had something special for Earth Day. The next Sunday I was at Chema’s in Samal island for the Metro Lifestyle By the Sea summer outing. This was the fitness club’s first such event, and judging from how everyone looked and played, it was a success. Earth Day at Eden Group trekking tree In Eden, our group of tour operators and media guests came late for the trekking, so we started at the third leg to catch up. It was my first time to go trekking in Eden, and I found it a fitting way to celebrate Earth Day. A path was discernible amidst the grass and leaves, and every now and then I paused to appreciate the view of greens or a little makeshift bridge, or just simply how the sun shone through the trees. We climbed up and down, and walking at our own pace, it was not so strenuous. After an hour and a half, we rested at Lola’s Garden. After the forest, it was pleasant to see a nipa hut, hammock, wishing well full of cheerful gumamelas, and a view of the Davao Gulf. We had the option to continue trekking, but our un-athletic group decided that the 1.5-kilometer trek we had was enough. For the healthier types, the whole Eden trekking experience covers four kilometers. Next stop was a visit to the resort’s newest attraction, the Eden Fields, located across the park’s entrance, near the chapel. Eden Fields is home to new activities like horseback riding (P80 for three rounds), soccer, Indiana Jones ride, obstacle course, volleyball, track and field, and the star of the show – the Zip Line. http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/4812/zipline2yw4.png (http://imageshack.us) The Zip Line is 200-meter long cable line that is 52 meters high. With a harness, helmet, and a prayer, you literally zip your way through the line, your feet dangling high above the trees. It’s not scary, as long as you jump before your nerves get to you. And don’t look down. Look only in front or to the side because that’s where the view is. The zip line is a thrill, and it takes 15-20 seconds per ride. Eden Nature Park will open this ride in June for P50 one-way. After lunch of adobo and rice wrapped in banana leaves, we went to the Vista restaurant to watch the Kathala Collective perform. We also viewed the art exhibit by the youth of Barangay Eden. Their works were all made of recycled materials. In their creative hands, toothpaste boxes transformed into buildings, tiny pieces of spare wood were arranged into a house roof, plastic cups became mountains, water bottles turned into legs of planet Earth and plastic forks its arms. Buttons, marbles, tiles, paint containers, twigs, straws, bottle caps were in attendance in the youth’s art entries. http://zhenmei.blogspot.com/search/label/city%20life Wow! I'm struck with awe. Eden Nature Park absolutely has loads and loads of fan now. I'll try the ZIP line for sure. nikkixtrm June 26th, 2007, 11:20 PM Hi Nikki? Tesiorna DIWALWAL will no longer be just known as a conflict-torn gold rush mountain from now on, but also as the Philippines' Hollywood. This after a Hollywood film outfit decided to shoot their movie right in the Mt. Diwata village with big Hollywood stars in attendance. Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage In a telephone interview Tuesday, village chief Franco Tito said Hollywood actor Josh Hartnett, star of the war movie "Black Hawk Down," is set to arrive in Diwalwal once the shooting for the movie starts on September 18. At the moment, the staff and crew of the movie outfit, Central Films Production, are already preparing the shooting location. Tito said the Hollywood staff arrived in Diwalwal Tuesday and have started coordinating with the local authorities for matters concerning their movie shoot especially on security aspect. The movie, titled "I come with the Rain," is reportedly hiring about 200 local residents as extras and paid P300 each. Tito jested this might be the start of his career as a movie star, a Hollywood star at that. But, it was learned though that Tito is not among the local residents hired as extras. The village chief said the Hollywood producer and director promised them that they will be shooting three to four more movies in Diwalwal including a movie about Diwalwal itself. "Sabi nila marami daw gusto pumunta dito na foreigner lalo na't alam na nilang peaceful ang area," Tito said. Police and military personnel are providing security for the cast and crew of the said movie. Aside from Hartnett, Korean star Byung-hun Lee is also in the movie. Harnett is a private detective in the movie who, haunted by a past encounter with a serial killer, heads for the Far East to search for a missing heir who has the power to heal with his touch. The movie is directed by Vietnamese director Tran Anh Hung whose previous credits were "The Vertical Ray of the Sun," "The Scent of Green Papaya," and "Cyclo." abskess June 27th, 2007, 02:14 AM Diwalwal is scene for Hollywood movie By Ben O. City Administrator Wendell Avisado said during his guesting at the weekly Kapihan sa SM held last Monday (June 25) at Pizza Hut SM Davao. The city is identifying and banking on some of its properties for relocation sites presently it is intent on developing a 23-hectare land for such purpose. According to Avisado the City has loaned about P100-million for the program which could provide housing for the numerous homeless in the City. "The lots will be distributed to the qualified beneficiaries." Avisado said. The City administrator bared that those that the city are relocating are not from the City but from different parts of Mindanao. He said that a system will be put in place that would identify the deserving beneficiaries. Avisado also said that he large cost of the project was due to the mandate of the City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte that the relocation sites will have road networks, water and electric utilities, open spaces and other facilities. He also said that the City will partner with organizations like Gawad Kalinga or Habitat for Humanity as the partnership will enable the urban program to be less costly. Last May, the City Council approved the third and final reading of the comprehensive shelter code which provides a Housing Board for the City which will address Housing and shelter-related issues. No matter that he was a Spaniard - a Basque from the Northern province of Spain after which Davao province was named Nueva Guipuzcoa in his honor by decree of Governor-General Narciso Claveria in 1848 and the Christian settlement now Davao City Nueva Vergara after the city where Oyanguren was born in the year 1800 and where he studied two years of law before seeking adventure and fortune in Las Islas Filipinas in the year 1825. He explored business possibilities in Calamianes - now Palawan - and the northern part of Mindanao particularly the area of Caraga which was often ravaged by Moro pirates. When the University of Sto. Tomas opened up a Law Department in 1835, he enrolled and received a degree - Bachiller en Leyes in 1837. After a year, he was appointed judge in Tondo, Manila, an office he kept for five years after which he was replaced for a Madrid appointee. (This is the first setback in Don Jose Oyanguren's life.) It was back to Caraga for his business ventures. It may have been at this point when he met Maria Luisa Azaola, the Spanish lady whose family had a plantation and whose brother Antonio traded on the Gulf of Davao. Tragically, Antonio was among the Spanish merchants brutally murdered on the commercial ship "San Rufo" in 1844 as it anchored off the coast of Malipano on Samal Island. The Spanish Captain had presented a friendly letter that acquainted the Moros in that island headed by the son of Datu Bago that the Sultan of Maguindanao had ceded the Gulf of Davao to the Spanish government. With complete complacency, the crew went fishing in small boats as the Moros brought on board bundles of beeswax with hidden kris and kumpilan. Too late, the two sentries noticed something surreptitious and fired at them. The Spaniards and the Italian merchant were slashed to death and no one left alive except for two servants taken hostage who later escaped to tell the story of the treacherous pillaging and burning of the "San Rufo." Spain's blessing The outraged Don Jose Oyanguren was thus impelled to seek a grant from the Spanish government to head an expedition on the Gulf of Davao with the object of ridding the gulf of marauding pirates and to establish Christianity on its shores. In 1847, Governor General Narciso Claveria responded by giving him three ships with the promise of a 10-year governorship of the province and six years mercantile rights. With the aid of his lady-love Maria Luisa Azaola on the main gunship "Elcano," Don Jose recruited nativos to augment the soldiery from Manila and Surigao. The final encounter with Datu Bago encamped with his three wives in his Kuta on the heights of Bankerohan took place in June 1848 after months of preparation on the part of Oyanguren's force - piling up nipa palms on the swampy area from Piapi to Bankerohan to form runways for their cannons. On the final battle, a brave son of Datu Bago fell defending the area before the kuta. Dato Bago's eldest wife Gomogonop was hit in the kuta. In the cover of darkness; Datu Bago and family slipped away in boats up Davao River to Tigatto. The following day, June 29, 1848, Don Jose offered a mass of thanksgiving in honor of St. Peter on a site not far from the present San Pedro Cathedral where he later built a chapel of bamboo and nipa. Thus, Davao celebrates its feast day on June 29. The seed of Christianity was firmly implanted. From one Recollectos priest - Francisco Lopez, the number of curas who established reduccioness among Davao tribes increased. Major victory Governor Jose Oyanguren scored a major victory with the defeat of Datu Mama Bago. He waged a vigorous campaign to make the Gulf of Davao free of piratical threats and to invite natives to form reducciones or Christian settlements. He increased his army without authorization from the central government to counter the threat of brutal Moro raids as he made forays to the north in Surigao setting up roads for trade to flourish, and even ventured towards Cagayan de Oro - an unfortunate venture. His effort to conquer Mt. Apo was unsuccessful and heart-breaking as he lost 20 men to sickness. But the greatest heart-break came from the Cabecera's Accounting Department which hounded him for detailed financial reports while denying his requests for budgetary allowance. On his part, he refused to tax the nativos in reducciones as he had given his word of honor that he would not exact tribute from the people who helped him in his campaign against terrorists. His request for the central office to remit P10,000 for "sagradas obligaciones" was denied and instead on November 25, 1851 he was relieved of his governorship of Nueva Guipuzcoa and denied mercantile rights for "abandono" of his office! And yet he holds no grudges. In 1855, when the successor of Governor Antonio de Urbiztondo, the man who botted him out, asked Don Jose Oyanguren to make a study of the declining economy of Mindanao and Sulu, he submitted a brilliant 14-point recommendation asking Spain to do away with monopolistic trade putting up a port in Jolo for foreign rtade; inviting strangers of different faiths to Mindanao with their new ideas and aspirations; reducing tribute by half for the natives; setting up a tariff system on products to favor our producers and many other recommendations. Whether the Cabecera heeded his proposals or not, we do not know. Broken man On October 10, 1858, he died a broken man. It is recorded, however, in the archives of San Pedro Cathedral that a death-bed marriage took place the day before his lady-love Maria Luisa Azaola. One final heart-break: The main street from the sea-front towards the center of present-day Davao City was named Oyanguren after its doughty founder, but by council decree it has been s`tricken out. However, Oyanguren street still remains in the subconscious memory of Dabawenyos. http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2007/06/27/life/don.jose.oyanguren.a.heartbreak.hero.htm abskess June 27th, 2007, 02:47 AM gtg muna mga bros... junax June 27th, 2007, 02:49 AM ^^ unsa pa! basta Norte pirme ... :D maayong buntag junax ....last time naa ko wala , pero naay model sila and katung ginahimo karon mao 2ng mga IT bldgs. gwapa ilang model? hehehe joke. yes, agressive ang norte karon with damosa gateway, proposed hi-rises, ayala-floreindo, etc.... pero dili papildi ang south mga goys... In March, the news was disclosed by the Department of Tourism signaling the city is receiving more tourist arrivals. There are other shops that will also open in the airport’s arrival area. I can post more details later as they have organized a press conference after tomorrow’s opening ceremonies. If I am not mistaken, the duty free shop at the Grand Regal Hotel was closed after the March 2003 bombing and for other reasons. Now that it will be reopened it should signal better environment for tourists to come, and hopefully for more better things to come to the city and the rest of Mindanao. http://istambay.wordpress.com/2007/06/26/airport-duty-free-shop-back-in-davao-city/ davaoeagle June 27th, 2007, 03:08 AM Diwalwal is scene for Hollywood movie By Ben O. The movie is directed by Vietnamese director Tran Anh Hung whose previous credits were "The Vertical Ray of the Sun," "The Scent of Green Papaya," and "Cyclo." Wow, Davao is indeed on a roll. Of course when the camera starts grinding they won't fail to pan it on the cities within for more urban scenes. During the two-day Regional Sanitation Forum held yesterday, local stakeholders were urged to replicate the waste water management program being implemented in the nine cities of the country. World Bank representative Jemma Sy bared that all the other parts of the country rely solely on septic tanks as waste disposal tool. She said most of these septic tanks are not designed well which directly results to health problems acquired by the people. " There are about 305,000 tons of waste that are deposited to the environment without proper treatment. This causes health hazards.", she said. World Health Organization consultant Jose Augusto Hueb also insisted that the government must give priority to waste water management as it turned out that a dollar investment could give back $3 to $34 to the community. "There is certainly a huge recovery of investment such that it could reduce the onset of diseases.", Hued explained. Re-elected Davao city councilor Leo Avila admitted that the city may not easily give a nod to this kind of project but given any foreign grant or form of assistance might push the local government to make it a priority. "Before, the city was not totally sold out to the idea but given the new models used by the different cities in the Philippines, we might establish one in the city," he said. The World Bank claimed that the basic requirement for it to be established is political support, by gaining the interest of the local government. WB announced that it has many credit windows available for local government units and service providers. However, what seemed to be apparent is the low number of takers which connotes the low prioritization of LGUs on the issue of waste water management. WB, this time, partners with the Department of Health and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources through its Sustainable Sanitation for East Asia. It is a program that provides a grant to six cities and municipalities in the country to provide practical solutions for waste water problem on a short and medium term scheme. In a report issued by the Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) it said that Vietnam is the most surprising market although the product has emerging markets like China, Russia and former Eastern Bloc countries that posted exponential growth in the last four years. Vietnam it said has become a trans-shipment point for Philippine banana chip exports to China because it enjoys preferential tariff rates with China due to long-standing bilateral agreements between the two countries. The traditional markets of Philippine banana chips are the United States, the European Union, Japan, Australia and South Korea. The annual value of banana chips exports from the Philippines is approximately $35 million and 70% to 80% of the product comes from Mindanao. GEM attributed the easy access of the product to varied international markets due to the support efforts that made the product important for the export market. Its assistance to the industry of accessing new foreign markets on banana chip exports to China rose to US$5.2 million in 2006 from only US$120,000 in 2002. Another emerging export market for the product is the Russian Federation where total shipments have reached a million dollars in 2006. This year GEM will help promote Philippine banana chips during the Food, Hotel and Catering Show in Beijing in June and will assist Mindanao processors to book advance orders from food suppliers and institutions preparing for the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Meanwhile the production of banana chips has emerged as one of Mindanao's strategic industries where there are 20 banana chips processing plants in the island compared to 15 factories five years ago. Thousands of small banana growers depend on the chip processors as primary markets for their produce. The industry requires the yield of 30,000 hectares annually. In Mindanao the cardaba production is dominated by small-holder growers with average farm size of one hectare or less, the total number of farmers involved ranges from 30,000 to 50,000. http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p070627.htm&no=17&r=R11&y=07&mo=06 GEM's assistance to the industry benefited former MNLF combatants who, after receiving training, have started growing the popular crop. Under its Targeted Commodity Expansion Program-Livelihood Enhancement and Peace Program, it assisted them (MNLF) to diversity their traditional activities through the establishment of cardaba farms. (PIA XI) [top] dinabaw June 27th, 2007, 10:57 AM Davao City pursues land banking by RG Alama Davao City (26 June) -- The City is pursuing land-banking, as part of its urban land reform development program. Filed under News DAVAO CITY, June 27 (PNA) — The construction industry in Mindanao is experiencing robust growth with more residential houses and commercial buildings being constructed. Federation of Philippine Institute of Architects (FPIA) chair Sonny Labao said the industry is better this year than last year with an estimated 15 million houses built in Mindanao alone. He also said three 10-story commercial buildings are going to be built somewhere in Davao City. However, Labao declined to divulge the details of the projects to avoid preempting them, hinting only that one of them is a hotel. On the other hand, FPIA committee head architect Romy Birrey said Mindanao is second only to Metro Manila in terms of processing building permits, indicating robust movement in the construction industry. He attributed this upward trend to the city’s peace and order stability. “Because of the city’s peace and order, everybody is coming back,” he said. Birrey said the flooding of tourists from Asian countries such as South Korea and Japan and the non-availability of vacant apartments as well as fully booked hotels signal the city’ economic growth. Meanwhile, City administrator Wendel Avisado said the city’s construction industry is “a sellers market.” He said of the city’s P1.5 billion acquired income last year, a considerable amount was contributed by the construction industry. http://wowdavao.com/blog/?p=3074 dinabaw June 27th, 2007, 11:24 AM June 27, 2007 Samal Island has most comprehensive shelter plan, code in Davao Region, says Housing Land Use and Regulatory Board (HLURB) by Grace @ 4:09 pm. Filed under News DAVAO CITY, June 27 (PNA) - The Housing Land Use and Regulatory Board (HLURB) said the Island Garden City of Samal has the most comprehensive shelter plan and shelter code in the entire Davao Region. HLURB regional director Roy Lopez said the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Samal Island was able to complete formulation and adoption of the shelter plan and code in 2005. “The HLURB was consulted during the preparation of the shelter plan and the shelter code sometime in 2005,” Lopez said. His statement, however, is contrary to the claim of the city council here in Davao City that the Davao Shelter Code that was recently approved is the most comprehensive shelter code in the country. The City Council here even described the passage of the shelter code to be the best practice since it is a needed law to implement the housing plans and programs of the government for the people of Davao City. But the city’s shelter code has reportedly no shelter plan which should not be the case since a code is to implement policies the shelter plan has adopted. http://wowdavao.com/blog/?p=3075 jaywalker June 27th, 2007, 01:12 PM ANP to launch exhibit of Negrense furniture Five groups of Negrense entrepreneurs will showcase their world-class furniture and furnishing products in an exhibit called "Matahum" to be launched by the Association of Negros Producers - Negros Showroom on June 30. Mallo THE recent acts of terror and the kidnapping of Italian priest, Fr. Giancarlo Bossi, does not reflect the tight security and peace and order in Davao City, thus, there is no hesitation on the part of the Duty Free Philippines to open retail stores at the Davao International Airport. "The security here in Davao is tighter than what Manila and Cebu imposes," DFP general manager Michael Kho said in an interview during the opening rites Wednesday. Two retail outlets were opened by Duty Free Philippines at the Davao International Airport Wednesday. One store is at the international arrival area and another at the international pre-departure area. The two outlets, counted as one, would be the ninth store of DFP and the only one in Mindanao. DFP once had its store here, at the Grand Regal Hotel which was then known as Mercure Hotel, but it was closed down in 2000 after a major slump in tourist arrivals following the Asian financial crisis that started in 1998. Now the foreign tourists are on a surge and thus the need for a Duty Free Philippines. Kho said he is more than confident that the retail outlets here in the city will be at par if not outshine the other stores in the country. davaoeagle June 27th, 2007, 10:11 PM Thursday, June 28, 2007 Davao's fisheries production up to P826-M in 1st quarter VALUE of fisheries production in the Davao Region registered a significant increase of 22.1 percent to P826.8 million for the first quarter from P677.4 million a year ago, official government statistics showed. In its recent fisheries situationer report for the Davao Region, the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics of the Department of Agriculture said the production volume also increased from 11,821 metric tons in 2006 to 18,170 metric tons this year, or a noteworthy improvement of 53.7 percent. Of the total fisheries production, aquaculture has a share of 19 percent while commercial and municipal fisheries contributed 24 percent and 57 percent, respectively, the report said. Commercial fisheries posted an increment in the volume of fish unloaded during the 1st quarter of 2007 compared to the same quarter last year. Production for this quarter was estimated at 4,315 metric tons, 2,189 metric tons above that of last year's level. The estimated value of 1st quarter output likewise increased from P138.4 million last year to P214.1 million pesos this year or a favorable growth of 54.7 percent. The output increment was attributed generally to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources' establishment of deep-sea fish shelters (payaos) that increased unloading in Davao City and Davao del Sur, the report said. Abundant catches were noted for acetes, anchovies, bigeyed tuna, frigate tuna, Indian mackerel, Indian sardines, mullet, roundscad, skipjack and squid. Fish catch unloaded at the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority port in Toril District, Davao City increased by 197 metric tons or 24.2 percent. Increased fish catch unloading was noted in Davao City (9.24 percent) and Davao del Sur (1,907.6 percent). On the other hand, commercial catch unloading in Davao Oriental slid by 67 metric tons (7.1 percent). As to municipal fisheries, total fish production exhibited an upward trend from 6,089 metric tons to 10,425 metric tons or an increase of 71.2 percent compared to the same quarter last year. The 1st quarter value of municipal fish production went up also from P359.6 million last year to P434.2 million this year or an increase of 20.7 percent. The marine sub-sector, which accounts for more than 99 percent of the total municipal fisheries production, recorded a positive growth of 71.8 percent or an increment of 4,344 metric tons to last year's output of 6,049 metric tons, the report said. Meanwhile, fish catch from inland waters like rivers, lakes, swamps, creeks and marshes recorded a negative growth of 21.1 percent or a decrease of about eight metric tons from last year’s level of 40 metric tons, it added. In aquaculture, value of production this year dropped to P178.4 million as compared to last year's P179.3 million, a negative growth of 0.5 percent, the statistics bureau said. The volume of production in aquaculture declined by 4.9 percent during the 1st quarter of 2007 from 3,606 metric tons in 2006 to 3,430 metric tons this year. davaoeagle June 27th, 2007, 10:11 PM Thursday, June 28, 2007 Davao's fisheries production up to P826-M in 1st quarter VALUE of fisheries production in the Davao Region registered a significant increase of 22.1 percent to P826.8 million for the first quarter from P677.4 million a year ago, official government statistics showed. So: Thinking a lot about Koreans By Michelle P. So Caught in the Net A SHORT trip to Davao City this week has kept me thinking a lot about Koreans. I don't know a single Korean, by personal or Koreanovela encounter, but I can't keep them out of my mind these days. The ubiquitous Koreans have not endeared themselves to Filipinos, at least the ones who have dealt with them in one way or another, despite the Philippines being host of the biggest Korean population in Southeast Asia. To me, they're a noisy lot when they ride the plane and they always make me feel excluded by their incomprehensible talk. One of these days, I'm going to get one of those "Jumong" actors to teach me Korean. They have reputed themselves to be cheapskate, abrasive, unruly and scheming, especially the men. And some of them don't pay their bills. And when they take the taxi, they ask for their change to the last 25 centavos. Taxi drivers have learned not to take the 25-centavo coin for granted because they just might need it for their Korean passengers. I am not passing judgment on the Koreans but this is how they are described and perceived by hotel and bar staff, store clerks and taxi drivers I have chatted with in my trips. I don't remember in what city this hotel is located, but it has posted a sign that says, "Koreans pay full upon check in." I asked the receptionist why the sign. He said they previously had Korean guests who checked out without paying and the hotel management didn't want anymore of them doing that and put the sign up. Handwritten in block letters on bond paper, the sign was tacked on the wall by the hotel manager who, in his seething anger probably, skipped his punctuation marks. Now, that's discriminating against Koreans. I'm sure some Koreans would object to the absence of the comma, the hyphen and the period. I am still racking my brains on where this hotel is because I'd like to tuck the punctuation marks where they belong. One time, a group of young Koreans spent 30 minutes analyzing a pair of Liz Claiborne earrings in an upscale store. They gave the earrings back to the salesgirl and graciously thanked her. When the salesgirl attended to me, she said that's how Koreans "shop." They simply look at the item like they're going to buy it. The reason I've been thinking about Koreans since I returned from my Davao trip is this: Davao City officials want the businesses of Koreans in their city looked into because they suspect that many of these have been put up through fraudulent means or without permits. The City Council passed a resolution on that and Mayor Rodrigo Duterte approved it. It's not only Davao that has this problem of illegal businesses of Koreans. Cebu and other cities have it, too, only that none of them has passed a resolution of similar nature. I don't agree with this Davao Council move because it's an unfair generalization of Koreans. Like the hotel sign, it's discriminating against them. About five years ago, a group of Korean TV journalists, through an interpreter, asked me if the Cebu media was singling out Koreans in negative news stories. At that time, about five crime stories involving Koreans (as perpetrators and as victims) had come out in the paper. It seems to them, they said, whenever a Korean figured in the news, it was always because of something bad that he had done. No, I said through the interpreter. The Koreans are not singled out. They're in the news because of what they did. If it were someone of another race, that person would be treated by the news desk in the same manner. The stories about them get highlighted because they're not ordinary citizens; they're foreigners in Philippine shores who have misbehaved. There is no agenda in whatever form. Period. Acac Published : 2007-06-27 THE city government will make an inventory of the pieces of legislation that the city has passed to check on whether these were effectively implemented, City Administrator Wendel Avisado said. Avisado admitted some laws were left unimplemented due to lack of funds. He said many of these laws create new divisions or offices that need bigger allocations. “Funding allocation has something to do with the organizational structure of the city,” he said, citing that as the bureaucracy expands, more resources should be tapped. He cited as examples the newly-approved Marine Protected Areas Ordinance which will create 11 regular positions and the Women and Children Crisis Center in Bucana that should be handled by social workers, lawyers and police. “The legislative body should look into enacting an ordinance that would create additional positions,” he said. Avisado said the review of the legislations is related to the proposed re-engineering of the city government which has been opposed by some employees of the city government including City Legal Officer Melchor Quitain. ”What are we going to do? Are we not going to review it?” he said, citing that it should not be a big issue in the city government. Avisado said the proposals of the executive department would be forwarded to incoming Vice Mayor Sara Duterte and members of the 15th council as soon as they take oath. He said the executive and the legislative departments should have a “common ground” in the next three years to make the necessary reforms in the city government. http://mindanaotimes.com.ph/story.php?id=17159 dinabaw June 28th, 2007, 02:52 AM Invasion of Fil-Am retirees in Davao seen Published : 2007-06-27 Filipino-Americans are among those that are into building their retirement homes in Davao City. Romeo G. Birrey of the Philippine Institute of Architects who is chair of the finance committee of the 5th Mindanao Design and Construction Fair said these Fil-Americans are from Davao who had stayed for a long time in the United States and will soon retire in the city. Birrey has about 30 high-end projects with cost ranging from P7 million to P15 million or more and mostly his clients are Fil-Americans. He said with the number of over a hundred high end projects here it would indicate that construction business in Davao City is really booming. Davao City has about a dozen high-end subdivisions where Dabawenyos from abroad after for a good home location would come home to build their homes where they could retire. Sonny Labao, president of the Philippine Institute of Architects said that sometimes prospective homebuyers put up apartments where they take the first door and the rest will be rent out to others. This would allow the retiree to engage in income generating projects, he said. He said there are other options but normally they buy and construct their homes but in some cases these homebuyers do not want to go into construction because it is very costly. They buy house and lot in high end areas have it refurbished in accordance to the design and specifications that they like. Labao meanwhile said that Davao buyers are now conscious on what to build. These are the patterns and designs that can be seen among others in Forbes Park in Manila. But plush subdivisions here like Robinsons are already into it as building owners would specify that they want such specific designs. He said the "Forbes" setting of Manila is slowly invading Davao City and this is not farfetched because their high end clients are into it already. He said this will really boast the architectural industry where current figure of practicing architects are about a hundred now. http://mindanaotimes.com.ph/story.php?id=17156 nikkixtrm June 28th, 2007, 04:33 AM kamusta Canadian (ka na dyan) .....mag tangga daw  cute ang pink ranger diha si nick4ubaby :hilarious maayo man. lol! mag tangga? asteg  junax June 28th, 2007, 04:40 AM ^^ hi there nikki, canada based sad ka just like our master sir eagle here? nice to have some girl power here in davao thread... btw... @dinabaw, we should update our greenbelt park photo albums... paging kulas for greenbelt park update part 2! :) junax June 28th, 2007, 04:54 AM jollibee - bajada... http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i292/naxju/jol2.jpg chinatown's plaze de luisa... http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i292/naxju/luisa.jpg Rasputin June 28th, 2007, 05:11 AM jollibee - bajada... http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i292/naxju/jol2.jpg NaxJu, Pila na ka buok Jollibee Fastfood chain sa Davao City alone?:) nikkixtrm June 28th, 2007, 05:38 AM ^^ hi there nikki, canada based sad ka just like our master sir eagle here? nice to have some girl power here in davao thread... btw... @dinabaw, we should update our greenbelt park photo albums... paging kulas for greenbelt park update part 2! :) yeah. canada kunuhay  jollibee - bajada... http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i292/naxju/jol2.jpg haha! gusto hinuon ko mukaon og palabok og jolly hotdog :( edit: lami man sad nang spaghetti sa jollibee no? or kato ba tong spaghetti sa greenwich ang lami? puro na pagkaon ang akong gina istorya...suya man gud akong panihapon kay frozen spaghetti. hm...i think its time for me to shut up. lol :( dinabaw June 28th, 2007, 06:32 AM answer in post #192 http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/3876/img5462ak4.jpg (http://imageshack.us) Yesterday I posted a photo of a fruit, and asked if anybody knew what it was. Well, Brian guess it correctly, it was Golden Dragon Fruit. Above you will see another photo, this time showing the edible part of the fruit inside the golden skin. The fruit is sort of a similar consistence to jelly or maybe jello. It’s very juicy, and sweet! I really enjoyed it, and actually the more I ate, the better I liked it. I think I’ll buy some more of it today! I found it best to eat this with a spoon, from within the skin, as you see in the photo. A little research makes me think that this fruit is native to Thailand and Vietnam, and from what I read, it is really starting to grow in popularity. I can see why, because it’s really good. I was told that this was grown near Eden Nature Park in Toril, so it makes me wonder if farmers in the Philippines are recognizing this as a viable crop here, and starting to grow it. I do believe that if it is widely grown so that the price goes down, it will be a viable fruit in the markets here. This has also been the experience of an increasing number of fruit lovers across the country who have become addicted to the “King of Fruits.” This development can be attributed in part to the aggressive efforts of industry organizations to introduce durian to the Filipino palate and to establish a wider mainstream domes-tic market. One such group is the Davao-based Mindanao Fruit Industry Council (Minfruit), which regular-ly organizes Durian festivals across the country to entice more Filipino in the Visayas and Luzon to make the fruit part of their regular diets. “Eating durian is an acquired taste. Through the durian festivals we have successfully organized, we want Filipinos in other parts of the country to taste the fruit and find out why Davaoeños go crazy over durian,” says Antonio Partoza, president of Minfruit. Partoza points out that the festivals have been effective marketing tools, as local demand for the fruit continues to rise. He recalls last year’s durian festival held in Cebu, when more than a hundred crates of durian were sold within a few hours of the festival’s opening. “All our stocks were sold out and the exhibitors continued to receive additional orders after the festival. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that a lot of Cebuanos have already acquired a taste for the fruit,” he says. Partoza, a lawyer by profession who has ventured into durian production, believes that the fruit has the potential to become a “bestseller” in the domestic fruit market in the coming years. The key to achieving this, he explains, is for industry members to further improve product quality and current marketing practices. “This will entice more Filipinos to go beyond the durian’s strong smell and buy the fruit because of its rich taste and health benefits,” he adds. It is in this context that Minfruit, in partnership with the Durian Growers Council of Region XI recently conducted a Durian Techno-Market Forum. The two-day event was being supported by USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program, which has been working with Minfruit to improve the competitiveness of Mindanao’s fruit industry. “This forum imparted the latest production technologies and relevant market information needed by growers and buyers,” Partoza explains. The event also provided a venue for growers and other industry stakeholders to exchange farming experiences and best practices. Government researchers were present to discuss relevant industry topics, including pest and disease management, post-harvest handling, market development and trading and consolidation. Partoza says that the future looks bright for the durian industry: “Members of the industry are looking forward to the day when durian will be included in every Filipino family’s fruit basket,” he says. Durian is grown predominantly in Southern Mindanao, particularly in the Davao Region. Industry figures show that 7,000 hectares of the region’s farmland is planted to durian. The area annually produces 18,000 MT of the fruit, which are shipped to markets in Mindanao and key cities in the Visayas and region. Due for release next year, “I Come With the Rain” is about a former Los Angeles cop-turned detective (Hartnett) who travels to the Far East in search of a Chinese billionaire’s son but was distracted by the memories of a serial killer whose “body of work” made him quit the police force, the Internet Movie Database said. The Internet movie site Asianpopcorn said alongside Hartnett, the movie by French-Vietnamese director Tran Anh Hung will also star Korean heartthrob Lee Byung-hun. Since 2000, the Davao City based Association of Differentlly-Abled Persons Multi-Purpose Cooperative (ADAP-MPC)is the recipient of a grant from the Department of Education (DepEd) to produce desks and chairs. The grant is pursuant to a special provision from the General Appropriation Act where 10 percent of DepEd's total budget for school desks and chairs goes to the cooperative for the manufacture of the said school facilities. This year alone, ADAP-MPC, through the marketing assistance of the National Federation of Cooperatives of Persons with Disabilities (NFCPWD), has produced some 16,000 armchairs for public and private schools in Davao Region, Regions XII, and Region XIII. "The program of the government really helped us in providing employment opportunities to Differently-Abled Persons. We were able to show our capabilities," said Engineer Darlito Palermo, Chairperson of the ADAP-MPC. Palermo, who is an Electronics and Communications Engineer by profession and a PWD athlete, said the project has given Different-Abled Persons a form of sustainable livelihood and employment. Palermo said the cooperative employs about 20 Differently-Abled Persons and its factory churns out some 500 high-quality chairs per day, working from the steel components allocated by the National Government. DDH Chairman Dr. Honorio Hilario, Sr. and DDH President Dr. Dominador Cabrera signed a contract with Siemens Senior VP Juan Miguel Tan and VP for Business Administration Ariel Lacson, to obtain the high-technology equipment. The Siemens Axiom Artis Cath Lab System will be installed soon in DDH's Heart Institute, further improving their present state of the art equipment and systems. The new Cath Lab system will make interventional and diagnostic procedures for heart patients easier and more efficient. This new equipment detects coronary artery disease more accurately, provides superb quality images at faster rates and greatly reduces radiation to the patient and the doctor. According to the Institute's specialists and consultants who are experts in this field, the new technology is most effective in benefiting the patients. VP Tan, a national distributor of Siemens, said that DDH's new Cath Lab system is even better than what some of the country's leading health care institutions have. The new equipment will make the hospital's Heart Institute the most developed in the Mindanao region. It may take some time before the hospital gets reimbursed for its P46M investment on the new equipment, but DDH chairman Dr. Hilario said it was a worthwhile investment. This makes the hospital more competitive and enables them to provide the community with a more acceptable service. Over the years, DDH's Heart Institute has been supplying the Davao community and the region with a variety of diagnostic, interventional, surgical and rehabilitation services so that heart patients do not have to go to premier hospitals in Manila or Cebu to acquire that needed care and treatment. The Siemens Cath Lab System will ensure the community with better health care for their heart patients. Labao na expiryensado sa construction mo tuo :D Mindanao’s construction industry enjoys robust growth by Grace @ 3:06 pm. Meanwhile, City administrator Wendel Avisado said the city’s construction industry is “a sellers market.” He said of the city’s P1.5 billion acquired income last year, a considerable amount was contributed by the construction industry. http://wowdavao.com/blog/?p=3074 ^^ so waway was right afterall... davaoeagle June 28th, 2007, 06:53 PM Hello GOYS! Austria The initial public offering of Phoenix Petroleum Philippines Inc. is 15 times oversubscribed as of yesterday, signifying the strong interest of local investors in the stock. Phoenix Petroleum, which is scheduled to be listed in the stock exchange on July 11, kicked off its initial public offering yesterday. The offering ends on July 3. “IPOs have been attracting small investors this year, which is the case with Phoenix Petroleum. This is turn increases retail demand which is exceedingly high compared to historic stock listings,” said Warren Sy, president of SB Equities. “Based on the investors briefing held last week in Manila and Davao, PSE trading participants are only given 55,000 shares each, which is not enough to meet the demand of the market. In addition, the small investors program is offering 1,000 shares per person, which is not indicative of the oversubscription demand,” he added. The company is offering 36.25 million common shares, consisting of 29 million common shares for the primary offer and 7.25 million for the secondary offer. The price for the offering has been set at P9.80 per share. This translates to a price/earnings ratio of 9 times versus a market average of 18 times, giving a generous upside to investors. BDO Capital and Investment Corp. is issue manager and sole underwriter for the offering. Sources said the oversubscription was not unusual for a company aiming for a 50 percent income growth in the next two years. Phoenix Petroleum expects the higher net income from the planned increase in the number of its retail stations from 20 to 50 by the end of the year. Phoenix Petroleum is engaged in the business of trading refined petroleum products, lubricants and other chemical products, operation of oil depots and storage facilities, and allied services, mainly in Southern Philippines. dinabaw June 29th, 2007, 02:54 AM DOT, BID check on Korean-owned establishments in Davao City June 28th, 2007 DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/28 June) — The Department of Tourism and the Bureau of Immigration and Deportation have inspected establishments reportedly owned by Korean tourists here in the aftermath of the city council’s move for regulation, the Tourism regional director said. DOT Southeastern Mindanao chief Sonia Garcia admitted some Koreans have put up enterprises in the city without permits, but attributed it to “ignorance” of the requirements. She said they had jointly visited establishments reported to be owned and run by foreigners, zeroing in to the Koreans for now. She said the city council initiative, which earned the nod of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, prompted them to start establishing mechanisms to prevent a backlash on the city’s tourism and the economy. She said they wanted to prevent what happened in Cebu City where the government closed down establishments that catered exclusively to Koreans only. “That cannot be. It should not happen here,” she said. She said the move is meant to straighten up legal gaps in the government’s effort to improve the city’s tourism business. She said the government has lured Koreans to the city but they want to make sure those who come are good tourists and investors. “We want you to pay the right taxes,” Garcia told reporters Wednesday addressing the Koreans doing business in the city. You can find such a cheap treat in most eateries around town. But the question now is, Does 20 pesos include quality food, sanitary utensils and surroundings, and good service? At Maq’s Deep Fried Chicken, a small fastfood that has branches in the city, 20 pesos is what you pay for a good meal — and more. I found this out during a recent stroll along Jacinto Street, just outside the south gate of the Ateneo de Davao University. I was on my way to catch a jeepney to the Agdao public market for an afternoon of ukay-ukay when my stomach began to growl. I had to look for a place to eat. Eateries and restaurants, along with photocopying centers, line the mouth of Jacinto Street where students from Ateneo flock during their break time and lunch hours. I surveyed the eateries by their front and found one that stood out. Beside a photocopying center was a distinct establishment with a thick red and yellow striped motif on its counter and a large signboard that announced “MAQ’s Deep Fried Chicken, 1 Piece Chicken + Rice for only P20.00.” They Do Fried Chicken Cheap. (davaotoday.com photo by Angely Chi)Great, I thought, while taking mental note of the limited food budget I had that day. I stepped into the establishment and found it spacious enough to accommodate droves of people, mostly students, who ate their meals heartily on thick wooden tables with wooden benches in the first half of the fastfood and on black-topped tables with stools at the other end. It also had several electric fans distributed well in the fastfood’s interior to battle the noontime heat. Uniformed service crews in red shirts and capped heads swiftly went around the tables, clearing the emptied plates and other leftovers and cleaning the tabletops with disinfectant. I stood in front of the counter near the entrance and eyed the glass case on one end of the counter with newly cooked chicken inside. A crew member behind the counter looked up at me and said, “Yes, ma’am, what will you have?” “A chicken and rice,” I replied. “Ma’am, maybe you’d also like to look at our other offerings,” she said, showing me the large board posted behind the counter containing a photo display of the food they serve. There were seven meals and one dessert, each costing barely half a student’s allowance. I surveyed the meals and their prices. I ran my eyes over the choices, which all looked tasteful and tempting, not to mention really cheap. I fumbled for an answer while my mind swung between the choice of the chicken and rice meal and the sizzling chicken sisig and rice meal. I decided to go for the 20-peso chicken sisig plate. But faced with more inexpensive options, I decided to stretch my lunch budget to 35 pesos to include the refreshing tropical fruit salad dessert. The service person smiled, handed me a numbered wooden block and told me to pay, sit and wait. You don’t wait long enough for your order to get served by an aproned waiter. Food here only takes five short minutes to prepare. MAQ’s servings are generous despite the low price. My sizzling chicken sisig with rice was quite a plateful. The smell of garlic was heavenly. I forked a few hot chicken bits and nibbled them. I found out that one cup of rice wasn’t enough with such a tasty viand. The tropical fruit salad was just as it was depicted on the photo by the counter, a gobletful of fruits. The salad, whipped cream on top, had thick slices of four fruit varieties — mango, papaya, watermelon and lacatan banana. I lost no time in enjoying my meal. I was greatly comforted by the thought that it only cost me 35 pesos to have a great lunch. Mallo A PHONE call from President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo placed the reconstruction of the ill-fated Governor Generoso Bridge I to the top of priorities of infrastructure projects for this year. That's the reason behind why it was suddenly announced that a concrete bridge would be built when the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) could only commit a steel bridge just a month ago. In an interview with DPWH Southern Mindanao Director Dimas Soguilon, he said Arroyo called on DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan to prioritize the bridge in the city and that she would also want a concrete bridge instead of a steel one. "We have actually finished the demolition of the old bridge and the construction of the new one is about to begin," Soguilon said. A steel bridge would cost less and would be built faster. "It would take us until around March or April to finish the concrete bridge," Soguilon added. A steel bridge would have been ready before Christmas. In comparison, however, a concrete bridge has a longer lifespan and will look better. Moreover, the DPWH is keen on finishing the bridge in as short a time as possible especially since it is considered one of the city's main links. Soguilon asserted they have already finished the new design of the bridge to be erected and will be submitting it to the DPWH main office in Manila for the necessary funds to be immediately released and work to begin soon. According to Soguilon, no money has been wasted with the recent flip-flopping of decisions on the kind of bridge to be constructed. He said the initial materials that arrived were intended for the steel bridge; however, as the design was changed into a concrete one, the materials will then be used for other steel bridges in the region. http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2007/06/30/news/bridge.construction.top.priority.public.works dinabaw June 30th, 2007, 02:50 AM bawal naka simangot na baboy sa davao  i remember i've seen this sign in a parking lot "kamo daw bantay way bayad lalim ba" Saturday, June 30, 2007 Singapore, Japan want Davao's 'happy hogs' By Carlo P. Mallo A HOG and poultry-producing land free from e food and mouth disease (FMD) and bird flu makes for a big attraction for countries like Singapore and Japan who are looking for sources to fill the insatiable demand for "happy farm animals." Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage View here the list of local winners Happy animals are organically grown in a free roaming environment without artificial antibiotics, and the demand for these is fast growing especially in the high-end and health-conscious markets of Singapore and Japan. Initial demands of the two countries for the city's producers are pegged at about 300 to 1,000 hogs per day. The countries of China and the United Kingdom have also expressed their interest in importing pork from the city, Dr. Rafael Mercado, livestock division chief of the Department of Agriculture said in Friday's Kapehan sa PIA. The city could start exporting pork products by mid-July, he said. Mercado said Mindanao as a whole has been internationally recognized as FMD- and bird flu- free since 2000. "This is our advantage over other countries in the ASEAN region," Mercado said. He said it is about time that local producers would tap the global market. However, he said the demand of the international market these days is more on organically grown pigs. http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2007/06/30/news/singapore.japan.want.davao.s.happy.hogs..html dinabaw June 30th, 2007, 03:00 AM been cruising to Samal ... http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/7505/dsc03987kf8.jpg (http://imageshack.us) http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/9135/dsc03983ze6.jpg (http://imageshack.us) http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/7479/dsc03982cx5.jpg (http://imageshack.us) nikkixtrm June 30th, 2007, 04:04 AM i miss eating those peeled mangas in cellophanes, day palihog pakapina ug ginamos  ... http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1242/638787101_6d65aa5fa1.jpg?v=0 omg! yes! kasagaran sa mangga nga baligya diri kay apple mango lng. kas-a ra jud ko nakapalit og manga nga dili apple mango. diba mas lami man ang alamang? latong niluto nga alamang. abskess June 30th, 2007, 04:57 AM ^^ Dragon fruit shake tastes very good...It's one of the attractions inside crocodile park. (PIA XI) [top] MtApoStandard June 30th, 2007, 09:18 AM i like the air of his(younger antalan) open mind attitude(cahracter). Brothers pledge continuity in Samal governance Written by Walter I. Balane / MindaNews Friday, 29 June 2007 12 43 40 PEÑAPLATA, Island Garden City of Samal (MindaNews/28 June) -- It was a brother to brother affair at the turnover rites as the city’s newly elected officials took their oath of office in this tourist island city on Wednesday. Outgoing Mayor Rogelio Antalan, 69, elder brother of mayor-elect Aniano, 66, was emotional in his parting speech, exhorting the incoming officials for excellence in work and partnership with the people, two strategies he said that took in his full nine year term. Antalan said they can boast of their achievements because it is a product of a "successful partnership between the executive and the city council and the people of IGACOS (Island Garden City of Samal)." Antalan served as the first mayor of the 3rd class city in the province of Davao del Norte with a population (Census 2000) of 82,609. The city was created through Republic Act No. 8471 in 1998 which paved the way for the dissolution and merger of the former three municipalities of Samal, Babak, and Kaputian into one local government unit, now officially named as the Island Garden City of Samal. He told his brother Aniano that the big challenge is how to sustain what they have started. The incoming mayor took his oath before the outgoing mayor. As Aniano took to the podium to deliver his inaugural speech, Rogelio went down the stage and returned to his seat, this time, as part of the audience. The audience applauded the brothers. The new mayor, who had worked as executive assistant for political affairs and was a public school teacher for 21 years said he would take on the reins of service but considered it a big challenge to equal his brother's achievement. He pledged no major changes in his administration saying he would continue projects, such as the implementation of the city's laws on fisheries, housing, livelihood among others. "But I will also start my own programs in due time," he told reporters in an interview at the end of the program. Among these programs, he said would be the conversion of the city's circumferential road into a national highway to usher in more development via infrastructure project. He said among problems bugging the city is poor road networks and conditions. Antalan also pledged to push for the construction of the bridge connecting the city to neighboring Davao. He said he would face problems that would be brought by development once the bridge is there "in due time." The former mayor had stressed the city has to balance between progress and environmental protection to keep Samal's healthy environment. "We are aware of the perils of development. That is why I am thankful the bridge was not done right away. But together with development comes the social problems and we can't avoid that," he said. The Export Processing Zone Authority declared the city as a special economic zone this year but the local government unit has to look into balancing priorities considering its thriving tourism industry. Davao del Norte 2nd District Representative-elect Antonio Lagdameo, who earlier in the day took his oath in Tagum City with wife Dawn Zulueta, took his oath again, sans the celebrity wife, in the city with the new mayor, vice mayor Orly Amit, and 12 city councilors. The oath taking was festive with rondalla music playing amid the marching beat of the city's drum and bugle corps. (Walter I. Rajah_Soliman June 30th, 2007, 07:38 PM I'm posting this here just for the record.... let's wait and see..... Sunday, July 01, 2007 Sara says she means business (sounds like her father) By Grace L. Plata Vows to prioritize transparency and accountability in governance NEWLY installed Vice Mayor Sara Z. Duterte delivered stern words Friday that can only mean one thing -- she means business. "I ask all our government employees, especially my Council employees and my colleagues that we afford our constituents with simple courtesy and behave as we are- public servants. I abhor stupidity and mediocre work, so I respectfully request you to tow the line. Let us not forget that we do not serve on our own pleasure and at our own time," the young Duterte said during Saturday's oath taking ceremonies at the city hall. "I know I can only do so much as a vice mayor. Especially at this time when most politicians opt to play safe and secure their perpetuation in the political arena. So please, if I am wrong, then by all means, call my attention. But if I am right, even though my decision is unpalatable to you or do not fall on your standards, kindly step back," she added. (to whom is she addressing this message?) Clad in pink Filipiniana gown, the new vice mayor, said she will be prioritizing transparency and accountability in governance. "For transparency and accountability, I assure you that our council will be clear in all its transactions and that our officials and employees will be held responsible for their actions and decisions. Thus, my office now is an express lane for all complaints regarding Council employees," she said. Sara, who is known to the masses as "Inday" said she can be expected to take care of the children and always uphold the general welfare of the city. "As you have elected me, I offer you not only my capacity to contribute but most importantly, my commitment. To know the difference between contribution and a commitment: Kanang contribution, paghatag kung unsa man tong pwede natong ihatag, sama anang itlog nga atong gipamahaw ganina, ang manok nga naghatag atong itlog aduna gyuy contribution. Samtang ang commitment, mao nay gitawag nga lunod-patay, murag kadtong litson nga atong gikaon, ang baboy nahimo gyug commitment  . So today, as I am sworn into this office, I am forging my commitment to the City of Davao," she said. But in true Duterte fashion, Inday warned those who will try to wreak havoc in the city. "To the people who have every good intention for Davao City, I will help you. And to those who don't, hatod ta mo kay Taning didto sa hell," she said. But amidst the stern words, Inday also thanked those who have supported her. "I am deeply moved by the support and confidence you have entrusted me by electing me as vice mayor. Not only is this a laborious job, especially for one who is a novice, but it is also a position based on trust and confidence of the constituents of this city. You trust me and are confident that I am competent and will certainly deliver satisfactory public service to you, a service worthy of your votes. Thank you very, very much," she said. Tribal chieftain Datu Rogelio Olac of Panamin, Mabini, Comval Province hides not the truth as he claimed that the Mansaka culture, dominating the said barangay, is fast dying. Only a handful of elders, still enriched by the Mansaka values, beliefs, traditions, and practices, are left in the 90 percent supposed Mansaka territory. And the younger generation shunned from the intrigued visitors when asked if they are pure natives. In one classroom of Panamin Elementary School, only a few hands were proudly raised when asked who among them could fluently speak in their native tongue. Sadly, teachers bared that only about 15% of the total school population makes use of the Mansaka language. Datu Rogelio has thought of several concrete reasons that caused the weakening of his tribe.First is the entry of various religions that declared Mansaka practices as taboo, forbidden and evil. Second that he could think of is the strengthened education system that resulted to the flourishing of many natives into professionals. A number of Mansaka have graduated college, became successful career persons and along with the change is the shift of attitudes and behaviors which are obviously influenced by the modern world. He could not blame religion, nor the government and education that brought in inevitable changes in his community. But he is deeply saddened by the deterioration of the culture that once dominated the Compostela Valley Province and some parts of Davao del Norte. BEAM on the rescueThe Mansaka leader remained helpless until the Basic Education Access for Mindanao (BEAM) through the Institute for Indigenous Peoples Education (IIPE) visited his barangay with a good news. He was told that his barangay, specifically the Panamin Elementary School, is among the twenty pilot schools in Region XI that is going to implement the Indigenous People (IP) curriculum. It embodies the core values of the IPs while mainstreaming the children with the DepEd Revised Basic Curriculum. Selected teachers in the said school were sent for trainings to be oriented about the project. And as they returned to their school, Grade 1 pupils then started to have an integration of their Basic Education Curriculum with the IP curriculum. When tribal elders learned about the program, they felt exhilarated, relieved, and hopeful for their yearned wish of preserving the Mansaka culture is finally addressed. Mansaka “balyan” or priestess Rubisa Antulin, now on her 70’s, expressed deep gratitude to the project officials who arrived in Panamin for a short visit. “We are more than grateful for thinking and being concerned about our culture. We have dwindled in population, our young ones have turned shamefaced on their real origin and we have almost lost hope of bringing back to life the Mansaka culture,” the elder said in Mansaka dialect. Culture, practices showcasedThough hoary and weary brought by old age, the “balyan” proudly performed the popular Mansaka ritual that heals a sick member of the tribe, punished by the spirit of the river. Some of the well-kept practices that the “balyan” and some tribal elders performed is the wedding arrangement participated by the parents of the girl and the boy. The boy is expected to help in the farm of the girl's parents. He also pays, in amount or in kind, the wedding dowry. An elder and a tribal leader officiates the wedding ceremony and sit with them at the table. Part of the ceremony includes an exchange of drinks between the parents, the groom and the bride. The performance was done infront of the younger generation of Mansaka who barely know the meaning of each symbol, movement, and language. She worries the present condition of her community that even if the barangay is building sturdier houses, more big schools, concrete roads -what has been put at stake is the death of their long-kept culture. "We want our young ones to continue our practices, to be proud of our songs, dances, chants, poems, and literature. We want them to continue patronizing our own Mansaka instruments, to embrace modernity but treasure cultural traditions and values. We want them to be proud of their being Mansaka," she said in vernacular. Acceptance by the tribal communityDatu Rogelio could think of no better way of reliving their culture but tapping education. This too, is seen by the BEAM Program as the most practical and effective way of rebirthing the Mansaka tribe…and that is through integrating the IP curriculum in the basic curriculum followed in schools. The tribal chieftain and the other tribal elders welcomed the project with open arms, all committed to take part for the success of the program. In drafting the Mansaka curriculum to be integrated, the elders in the community willingly offered time, effort and knowledge as they hope to inculcate and leave in the present generation the value of the Mansaka tribe. Now, the “balyan” worries no more even if she dies anytime soon because she knows that the BEAM IIPE Program shares her advocacy and she very well trusts the pliability and effectiveness of the program. Why not read this article instead: Dutertes start three more years in power DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/30 June) – Mayor Rodrigo Duterte took his oath Saturday during which he cited in his inaugural speech his 19 years of service as a "mix of success, few failures, frustrations, disappointments, triumphs, humbling experiences, and best of all great satisfaction in what truly matters ---being of service to our people and country". While mouthing these lines, his youngest daughter Veronica, 3, pulled his hands towards the direction of the audience were the rest of his family sat in an open-air clearing in front of the City Hall's doorsteps. Four generations of the Duterte family, including his aging mother Soledad, daughter Sara, and grandchildren through son Paulo, attended his inauguration for another three years as the highest official of the city. Two hours later, at the session hall of the Sangguniang Panlunsod, Sara Duterte, the mayor’s daughter, took her oath as the city's first woman vice mayor in well-anticipated and formal rites. Duterte, 62, was a state prosecutor before becoming mayor in 1988. His father, Vicente, was governor of the then undivided province of Davao. The father and daughter tandem, the first in the city’s history, vowed continuity of progress. The mayor said "peace and security" shall be the cornerstone of development, and the vice mayor stressed her priority will be "transparency and accountability" of the city council. Duterte is on his sixth term as mayor. His third term ends in 2010, triggering speculations he is grooming Sara to be his successor. He stressed he will keep peace and security as his administration's priority vowing that the campaign against lawless elements, an area he is known for, will continue to be "relentless and uncompromising”. At one point in his speech he said "ours is a city that is not fit for the weak of the heart." He recalled how he led the city from "turbulent and uncertain times" in the past. "Together, we did what we needed to do," he said. At the Grand Men Seng Hotel later during lunch, Duterte admitted to the public that he brought food to the rebel New People's Army whenever he visited them to negotiate for local peace. "We put order in the streets. In a sustained deliberate manner, we instilled fear in the hearts of criminals and restored the courage of law-abiding residents to stand up and be counted," he said illustrating how Davao took care of business and was made livable. He cited accolades conferred on the city, such as being named as one of "Asia's most livable cities," "the most competitive metro city," "the cleanest and greenest," among others. He also cited achievements of local legislators, the business community and the police. He said individually and collectively, the Dabawenyos, the city government, and local organizations and entities were recognized for excellence and exemplary performance. "We must have done something right along the way," he said. Duterte spoke of his administration's focus on fueling the economy, too. He cited six policy statements to sustain growth, including taking advantage and benefit from advances in technology; ensuring access to information, empowering workers for more employability, supporting and encouraging small and medium enterprises, creating livelihood opportunities, and cutting government intervention in business at all times. "We must build on our natural competitive strength. We must bring every parcel of land in the production cycle," he said. The mayor touched on themes about the family in the more emotional portions of his speech citing ideals that will benefit the children. He said the city must ensure the best possible upbringing of children, including their education, and the nurturing needed to prepare them to make choices. But he used the subject on preparing the children for their future in presenting his family's tradition of government service. "We must ensure that when their time comes, they are ready to take the cudgels of leadership. Our success as leaders can best be measured if when our time is past, the younger leaders who will be coming after us are ready, willing, and able to assume the mantle of leadership.” He then told the audience about his father's service and his daughter's oath-taking later in the morning. He said it will be a month of parental pride saying he has full confidence in her capability and dedication to serve. Sara told Mindanao Times Friday he wasn't inspired to run for office, but was forced to do so after her father asked her. Duterte said the youth is his inspiration, adding they give him strength to do what is right, face difficult situations, win over difficulties, and make proper choices as a leader. But he also told reporters in an interview later he would continue to oppose the Juvenile Justice Law, which bars authorities from jailing children in conflict with the law. He said it abets criminality and endangers the children’s future. Time magazine called Duterte "The Punisher" reportedly for allowing young offenders to be preyed upon by the so-called Davao Death Squad, a band of anti-crime vigilantes believed to be operating in the city. Duterte is presidential crisis manager for Regions 11 and 12 and is also chair of the Regional Peace and Order Council. We were samplers who weren’t very willing to spend. But we still needed to open light conversations, if not forge new beginnings or sign our future on that big rock. We sampled Haus Edelweiss Restaurant somewhere in Bangkal. They serve lots of wurst(sausages) and other German delights. They also offer imbesse or short orders for those who wanted lighter or faster food. The restaurant is not crowded so there is a good hold of privacy. The interior is elegant in its simplicity. The lighting is also remarkable. The tables and benches are large, akin to the space afforded in between customers. I think the distance between the floor and ceiling also defines it is designed like high halls. So there is much space to dine, breath and unwind. The price was also right, according to this officemate who sponsored our humble respite. On the 29th, incidentally we hopped in another cafe. This officemate had to meet some Manila-based journalists who are in town for a workshop they organized in Davao. Our place was called “The Fabulous 50s Cafe” inside Crown Regency along Cabaguio Street. Our night out was meant to update with those journalists and since we cooked dinner in the office the best I thought of ordering was instant coffee (I didn’t know the price so I played safe.) When I was about to call the waiter, I found out we were in a restaurant full of memorabilia starting from the 1930s; from LP records to old ice crashers, traffic signs, old wooden cases of both Pepsi and Coke, and photos of old vehicles such as vintage car “De Soto Diplomat” (to be honest I didn’t know that car existed!) Some installations also included posters printed on tin sheets of Cortal medicine, Zestful Royal Tru Orange, among others. Hey, Froi said a sign board mounted on a wall marked with “Fil Oil” referred to among the first gasoline stations in the Philippines. As a novice on vintage stuff (stuff the old people among us could relate to), I forgot about coffee and went around the cafe as if I was viewing an exhibit in a museum. It was like a walk in history and I thought I deserved a cup of coffee after all. But it was already too late to sample their brewed coffee, so I decided to try at least one or two offerings on the menu. Of course we left with me deciding to fast. Anyway, I had food for the brain on history of products and promotions that night. I don’t know where I will land next Friday but I’m looking forward to it. To be sincerely honest, however, I think the best place to hangout are those places that fit a person’s ideals. Some hangouts are not as fabulous as others, and yet they draw their own crowd. For me, fabulous could mean anything as long as it provides for my needs and preferences. During the rest of the week, for example, I go to Karen’s (karenderya). In the neighborhood tambayan I frequent, I eat lutong bahay food, drink instant coffee or Sparkle lemon drink and relax with friends, sans the worry over costly bills. Magpakatotoo ka. Of course the occasional cafe and bar hopping is redemption. http://istambay.wordpress.com/2007/07/01/a-fabulous-cafe-a-memorabilia-museum/ dinabaw July 1st, 2007, 03:49 PM Samal Island.... Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano led the Philippine delegation of executives from hotels, resorts, travel trade, and media. Marco Polo Davao and Pearl Farm Beach Resort represented Davao. In Durano's presentation at the DOT Reception, Davao took center stage as the next hottest destination for Koreans in the Philippines. Korea continues to be the top source of foreign visitors to the country that has posted double-digit growth rate of 21.7% in the first quarter of 2007 with 171,716 arrivals. The 180 square-meter Philippine Pavilion had a huge photo of the Kadayawan Festival's Indak-indak sa Kadalanan that served as stage backdrop. Several huge photos of the Philippine Eagle, Waling-waling, and Davao's indigenous peoples strategically stood around the pavilion. The Kotfa is the most prestigious and biggest travel fair in Korea that attracted at least 75,000 visitors to about 375 exhibitors from 49 countries. tj_brewed July 1st, 2007, 07:06 PM Oledan: Zeal "WE EXPLORED the options available to us, never hesitated to exercise our prerogatives, asserted our rights, and pursued what we believed was good for us. We did not just take the path less traveled. When the situation demanded it, we created our own." - Mayor Rodrgo R. Duterte, 2007 Inaugural Address. This year, Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte marked almost two decades of strong political leadership in Davao City. It was by no means easy. The mantle of leadership was given to him with the full trust of Dabawenyos who, in 1988, were still reeling from an unstable peace and order situation. Davao was then known as the killing fields of the south, marked by chaos and disorder. "It was nineteen years ago, in 1988, when I first took my oath as mayor of our city. Those were turbulent and uncertain times. Our people were divided and grappling with the democratic space that was suddenly there for everyone to enjoy or abuse." Last Saturday's inaugural speech of the mayor for his second third term (his first third term was in 1998) may be considered as a memoir for Dabawenyos who have stubbornly faced the challenge. Head on. "The challenges then were to restore law and order, promote peace, clean up the garbage, restore the faith of our fellow Dabawenyos in our city, bring in the investors, create jobs and livelihood to benefit the people, improve the social and physical infrastructure, provide the basic facilities and amenities and to make sure that the local government as an institution will be capable of responding to the needs of the people." If there was anything that could be said of the leadership of the mayor, it is his ability to unify the various segments of the public, with all of the colors and affiliations. The man simply struck the hearts and minds of the masses. He continues to be remembered as somebody who is willing to go down to the ordinary people. Be within their reach, a father who would listen and a ruler who is tough against those who violate human rights, most especially of women and children. It was President Ramon Magsaysay who said he who has less in life should have more in law. Probably, it was only Mayor Duterte who was able to operationalize it in the way he has governed the city. His leadership is of no flaws. His unconventional style may have earned the ire of some groups. Still, he continued to defy and redirect tradition--for the public's interest. Today, Davao City remains to be the trailblazer in socio-economic reform, ecological rights and inclusive governance. The mayor is not one who would brag and rightly so, for it was the confidence of the people on themselves which made all of the efforts possible and sustainable. Simply put, there was substance and programs are almost always relevant to the lives of the people. A generation later, Vice Mayor Sarah Zimmerman Duterte takes the reign of leadership in the legislative arena. She is expected to continue the zeal of Duterte's leadership. Yet, she is a woman of substance in her own. With the same confidence given to his father, Inday Sara will continue the brand of leadership of her father. Strong-willed, confident and determined. The public watches. tj_brewed July 1st, 2007, 07:09 PM Sara, Avila support 1st Davao cyber expo Sunstar Online Davao July 1, 2007 DAVAO City vice Mayor Sara Duterte and City Councilor Leonardo Avila expressed support for the first ever cyber expo to be held in Davao City. Duterte will lead the cutting of the ribbon on July 4 at the Ground Floor Activity Center of the NCCC Mall in Matina. Avila will be assisting Duterte in the event. Leonardo Paquito Avila VI, son of Councilor Avila and president of E-Squared Events Organizing, will be the one to declare the formal opening of the 1st Davao Cyber Expo. Organizers said the five components of the first-ever cyber exposition in the country are cyber games, creative edge, LAN party extreme, forum and exhibits. The cyber games component is a fun event where teams from all over Southern Mindanao are invited to compete with each other. "Each Internet cafe in the region will represent their own team, this is actually the main event where the games were patterned after Olympic styles," said the young Avila. The creative edge is another competitive event where digital creativity is given emphasis. The event is aimed at recognizing the city's finest graphics designers and animators, as well as inspiring others to pursue a career in this field. "Here in Davao City, wala pang school na nagtuturo ng video activity and animation. Through this event, maybe we can come up with the realization that there is a need to support the establishment of animation schools," Avila said. The LAN party extreme, on the other hand, is a friendly gathering of local gaming and PC enthusiasts. The event will host a free for all LAN gaming, as well as knowledge sharing among fellow games and PC enthusiasts. Avila said participants of the LAN party will bring their own computers where these computers are usually highly modified, optimized, and over-clocked. This gives the regular computer user chances to see what can be done to a computer and how to improve its look and performance. This event will also host a small computer hardware-related contest such as speed building. Learning sessions from Davao City's leading graphics designers will also be made available during the Davao Cyber Expo 2007 through a forum. The event aims to educate and inspire young minds to get into the information technology (IT) industry via creative skills such as graphic designs and digital animations. "We will be putting cyber culture to higher level that's why we came up with this event," Avila said. Another component of the exposition is the exhibit that will gather the latest technologies and gadgets in the computer industry. This event will showcase the products and services of exhibitors, sponsors, and supporters of the first Davao Cyber Expo 2007. "All these we put in one big event. We want to make Davao City as the leading cyber city that will lead to the development of the cyber entertainment culture," Avila said. The event will run from July 4 to 6. habagatcentral1 July 2nd, 2007, 02:14 AM Taking off from DVO to MNL with PR by pbatacan BfXPffUEbkA dinabaw July 2nd, 2007, 02:36 AM http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/6181/sarazt4.png (http://imageshack.us) They may have gone their separate ways, but in last Saturday's oath-taking ceremonies, Mayor Rodrigo R. "To the people who have every good intention for Davao City, I will help you. And to those who don't, hatod ta mo kay Taning didto sa h-e-l-l, (I'll bring you to Satan in Hell)," this city’s first woman vice mayor warned. Mayor Rodrigo Duterte's 28-year old daughter, who during the campaign period was projected by her publicists as a sweet and humble ‘Inday’, gained applause and praise for her tough talk. "I assure you that our council will be clear in all its transactions and that our officials and employees will be held responsible for their actions and decisions," she continued, drawing mixed reactions from the audience who anticipated how she would manage the 26-member legislative body. "My office now will be an express lane of complaints regarding Sanggunian employees," she said urging employees of the city council not to forget that "we do not serve on our own pleasure and at our own time," she said. For transparency and accountability, Sara asked government officials and employees, especially at the city council to give constituents simple courtesy and behavior as public servants. She noted the bureaucracy’s negative image such as its slowness in processing documents and enacting bills. "I abhor stupidity and mediocre work, so I respectfully request you to tow the line," she said without batting an eye lash. Sara also cited the need to take care of the city's children and always uphold the general welfare of Davao City. The younger Duterte appealed to colleagues for cooperation. "I know I can only do so much as a vice mayor especially at this time when most politicians opt to play safe and secure their perpetuation in the political arena," she said. "So please, if I am wrong, then by all means, call my attention. But if I am right, even though my decision is unpalatable to you or do not fall on your standards, kindly step back," she added. Sara's tough talk tends to confirm her father's claims that she, too, has a mind of her own and is capable of and dedicated to her new duties as vice mayor. Aside from tough talk, Sara also illustrated in popular language resembling her father's popular appeal her pledge that she will offer not only her capacity to contribute, but also her commitment to public service. Sara illustrated it to an amused audience by saying a hen contributes as it lays eggs but a swine gives commitment when it is butchered and cooked into ‘lechon’. "Kanang contribution, paghatag kung unsa man tong pwede natong ihatag, sama anang itlog nga atong gipamahaw ganina, ang manok nga naghatag atong itlog aduna gyuy contribution. Samtang ang commitment, mao nay gitawag nga lunod-patay, murag kadtong litson nga atong gikaon, ang baboy nahimo gyug commitment, she said. (Contribution is what you can give, like the hen in laying its eggs. Commitment, on the other hand, that's what's called really determined, just like the pork lechon we ate, the swine was the commitment.) "So today, as I am sworn into this office, I am forging my commitment to the City of Davao," she said. Duterte recognized the achievement of the city council as laudable and she pledged to "continue and contribute my very best to this body." "Rest assured, I will be at all times impartial in the exercise of my office and in dealing with my colleagues in the 15th Council," she said. When asked if she will be tough just like her father, Sara simply said, “I will just do my job based on the provisions of the Local Government Code.” Duterte is a practicing lawyer prior to her entry into local politics. Duterte and the 26 members of the city council took their oath before RTC-Branch 16 Judge Emmanuel Carpio. In a sidelight to the event, the older Duterte acceded to request from the audience for him and his former wife to kiss in front of the cameras. tj_brewed July 2nd, 2007, 05:02 AM ^^ is she the youngest vice mayor in Davao?
