PIA Press Release

PPA beefs up security officers' training skills

Davao City (3 July) -- Unrelenting in its drive to continually comply with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code requirements, Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) port police officers undergo a ten-day intensive Advanced Trainors’ Training.

Jointly facilitated by the PPA Training Center and the Australian government through its Department of Transportation and Regional Services-Office of Transport Security (DOTARS-OTS), the courses cover enhancement of technical and presentation skills of participants based on world’s best practices.

About 22 graduates nationwide selected from PPA port police, cargo handling operators, the national and local government and other private companies received their certificates of completion on June 23 at the PPA Port District Office-Southern Mindanao (PDO-SoMIn) in Davao City, the venue of said training.

These graduates first survived a seven-day certificate course on basic classroom instruction techniques which were each followed by a return demonstration and workshop evaluated by PPATC officers before they proceeded to the three-day specialized course on ISPS Trainors’ Training.

PPATC’s Career Development and Research Department Manager Virginia Garcia handled the first seven days of the Trainor’s Training Curriculum assisted by Acting Port Operation Training Section Chief Richard Correos.

Also in attendance were PPATC manager Dr. Madeleine Abada and PPA Human Resource Management Department Manager Adelaida Hernandez who acted as workshop evaluators.

“SoMin’s hosting of the ISPS Code continuing capacity-building particularly in Davao which in itself is an international gateway truly strengthens public confidence in our ports,” Port District Manager Abdussabor Sawadjaan says.

Said training is in line with the National Security Program for Sea Transport and Maritime Infrastructure of the Philippine government which is being coordinated by the Department of Transportation and Communications-Office of Transport Security (DOTC-OTS).

“This is the second part of a Aus$ 2.5 M of the Philippine-Australia Port Facility Security Capability Building Project which would run up to 2008 and has a total of six training courses, “ Paul Trebilcock, the DOTARS consultant-trainor bares.

Heading the Australian delegation is the DOTARS-OTS Project Director Neil Anderson, who, along with Trebilcock was supported by the DOTC-OTS headed by Deputy Administrative Acting Head of the Maritime Security Bureau VAdm Euceo Fajardo and Technical Assistant VAdm Edgardo Israel.

DOTC-OTS, it would be recalled, was created through Executive Order 277 on January 30, 2004 to handle concerns and programs related to civil aviation security regulations and later expanded its jurisdiction over other transport systems such as sea/maritime and land, railway and infrastructure through Executive No. 311.

The ISPS Code refers to the concerted mandate of all International Maritime Organization (IMO) members to enhance security and to address trans-national crimes and syndicates such as piracy, terrorism, smuggling and stowaway as an aftermath of the September 11, 2001 bombing in New York. Why I Want to Live in Davao

I fell in love with Davao on my first visit. That was in August 2005 when I went on a business trip.

I said then, "I want to live in Davao."

And I've said that in each visit I've made (November 2006 and March 2007). And I would if I wasn't tied by commitments and family in Manila.

So, why do I want to live in Davao?

1. It's peaceful. I know there are a lot of bad news associated with the region and I always end up arguing with friends abroad about it, but I believe any place or city has it's own dangers. Mind you, locals here follow the law.

2. The people. I noticed that it is easy to deal with and befriend people from the South. I've always been treated well here and I've made a number of friends already.

3. The food. Need I say that food here is very, very cheap? Where else can you get 3 sticks of barbecue with unlimited cups of rice for only PhP20? Plus! Everything's fresh and you have the choice of eating by the sea, in the jungle or just take a walk anywhere and you'll find food.

4. Recreational facilities. Samal Island is just 20 minutes away from the city. Want a mountain adventure? Just head up towards the mountains and you'll find Eden, a real heaven 2,000 feet above sea level. Or go white water rafting. Or just head over to the crocodile farm or wherever. The slow pace doesn't bother me at all coz there are more things I could actually do.

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/9885/1003675sa9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

5. And just because I want to live simply. I guess I'm just a very private person and outside of my work I just want to have fun with my family and friends. And I believe Davao can provide that.

Plus! Wi-fi is free everywhere! Even in Jollibee! That's what I call life. :)

I must've been born in the wrong region. Hehehe.

Go, Davao...
I'm on my way for a vacation in Buenos Aires, Argentina where the best nightlife in Latin America is found (grabe mga itsura), & that reminds me of Davao. You have the coolest party place there- Davao people walang kyeme, if they feel like it, they go for it (& I'm not even talking of the paid kind). Perhaps you should publicize that also- Davao students know how to have a night life..! (talo nyo Manila at Cebu, you know how to rock!!!!)

here are some hung-ups of our councilors

New council promises against absenteeism, cellphone use
By Grace L. Plata

ASIDE from taking their oath of office, the members of the 15h council were also made to promise three things by administering judge Emmanuel Carpio.

Carpio, before he swore in the councilors per district, repeatedly asked them to promise to avoid absenteeism, observe punctuality, and not to use cellphones during the session.

"I do not permit cellphones in my sala. Councilor Librado and Councilor Advincula know that," Carpio said.

Vice Mayor Sara Z. Duterte and a number of councilors agreed with the judge.

Councilor Mabel S. Acosta said it would be a good way to start the council keeping Carpio's three suggestions in mind. However, Acosta said it would be up to the vice mayor to make this a reality.

"I totally agree with this kay it's a sign of disrespect pud kung mag sige ka ug tawag diha habang ga-session (if you keep on using your cellphone while the council is in session)," said neophyte Councilor Rachel Zozobrado.

Councilor Diosdado Mahipus, for his part, said the rules must be adhered to in the incoming sessions although he is leery about its strict implementation.

"Ningas kugon man gud ang uban mao na sa kadugay na, dili na lang i-call ang attention sa violators (Rules such as there are only good at the start. After a while these are disregarded by some and thus violators' attention are no longer called)," Mahipus said.

The vice mayor, however, said she is supportive of amending the House rules, noting the system under the old guidelines had been a cause of long debates in the 14th council

"Musugot ko pero dapat kaisahun ra (I will agree to amendments to the House rules for as long as this will only be done once and for all)," she said.

Another Duty Free outlet soon to open
Sunstar Davao
July 3, 2007

ANOTHER Duty Free Philippines (DFP) retail outlet is set to open in Davao City by mid-August.

The influx of foreign tourists in the city is the primary reason why DFP general manager Michael Kho is aggressively taking on Davao.

"Davao City is one of the bigger markets in the country," Kho said.

He added an off-airport retail outlet would be able to offer more merchandise and more goods to travelers.

The off-airport retail store of Duty Free would occupy a space about 300 to 350 square meters big.

Kho is expecting the Davao retail outlet of Duty Free to be at par, if not outshine the sales of their two Cebu retail stores. Cebu is annually raking in more than $8 million in sales.

The return of Duty Free in Davao City has always been the dream of Kho.

He said it took them quite a while to return to the city as they wanted to get good airport space for them. "With the stores here in Davao, we hope to reach the $160 million mark," Kho added.

Kho said chocolates and liquor still top the list of most sought after products in their retail outlet.

"Chocolates and liquor comprise about 35 to 40 percent of our annual sales," Kho said.

After opening the retail stores in Davao, Kho said they are also eyeing Laoag as the next target. The presence of an international airport in the area and the influx of Chinese nationals in the area are taken into consideration by Kho. (CPM)

Davao Doctors Hospital prepares for Medical Tourism
Sunstar Davao Online
July 3, 2007

THE president of the Davao Doctor's Hospital (DDH) said the hospital is making efforts to acquire accreditation from the Department of Tourism (DOT) to project DDH as one of the tourist-destination hospitals in the country.

"One by one, we will also renovate our rooms, we will make our hospital very presentable and make sure we offer the best accommodations," said DDH President Dominador Cabrera.

There are a total of 70 rooms in the hospital's old building, while 51 rooms are in the new building.

DDH inaugurated Monday the renovated hospital's Out-Patient Department (OPD) as a highlight of its 38th year anniversary celebration. It is composed of several clinics that would accommodate patients with different concerns in the field of OB-Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Dietary, Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Pediatrics.

Cabrera said the renovation of the OPD Department was part of the hospital's plan to apply for a medical tourism accreditation.

He added that aside from the renovations to be made inside the hospital, it would also make tie-ups with different resorts, golf clubs, and with the Marco Polo Davao for the food as preparations for making the hospital as one of the tourist medical destinations of foreigners from other countries.

Meanwhile, Cabrera said DDH has the vision and determination to give the best service to the community.

In terms of facilities, DDH is the premier hospital to acquire the best cat-lab in the country now. "The Siemens Axiom Artis Cath Lab has just arrived this month, it can do open-heart surgery," he said.

Cabrera said the hospital spent a total of P100 million for the purchase of new machines, while a total of P120 million was spent for the construction of the new building.

The new building is the six-storey Nursing Care Building. It was built as a response to the need of accommodating more patients and housing additional specialized sections to upgrade the hospital's ceaseless attention to high standards.

Within the new building is the upgraded Obstetrics Ward and Pediatrics Intensive Care Unit, and the New Surgical Ward and the Surgical Intensive Care Unit.

The new 51 rooms located in the new building will include a receiving salon, selective menu options, a mini-bar, and Internet connections with unlimited access time.

Port to be suited up with a quayside crane
Sunstar Davao Online
July 3, 2007

THE upgrade to international standards of the Sasa Port in Davao City is the priority of the International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) as the private firm expanded its operations in the region late last year.

First on the list to be installed is a quayside crane.

ICTSI Executive Vice President Edgardo Abesamis recently said they will be installing the crane at the soonest possible time.

The installation of the crane would allow a more efficient and faster transport of cargo from the ship onto the port.

Apart from increasing the efficiency of the port in the loading or unloading of cargo, the installation of a quayside crane is also one of the prerequisites in transforming Sasa Port into a world class terminal.

Abesamis expressed his confidence that their presence could one day turn Sasa Port at par with the services that are being offered in the international ports of Hong Kong, Taiwan, Busan in Korea, the ports of Malaysia and Thailand, and even that in Manila.

Another aspect that Abesamis focused on is the need for an increase in the yard area of the port. The current yard of Sasa Port is estimated at about 16 hectares only.

"In the yard area, there should also be a power source for reefer containers, facilities for dangerous or hazardous cargo to be segregated in a safe and efficient manner, and yard lighting to enable night work," Abesamis added.

Other developments needed at the Sasa Port would include a computerized Terminal Operations System that would enable the documentation and increased efficiency and transparency in the port services.

"These developments would involve huge capital investments, but the greater challenge is how to get the Davao and Southern Mindanao business community and Sasa Port together to align themselves behind their common interests and achieve this goal of a world class Sasa Port," Abesamis said.

ICTSI acquired the Davao Integrated Port and Stevedoring Services Corporation (DIPSSCOR) in December last year. It is also operating in the countries of Brazil, Poland, Madagascar, Japan, Indonesia, Syria, and China. In the Philippines, they are operating in the ports of Subic Bay, Bauan in Batangas, Makar Wharf in General Santos City, and Sasa Port in Davao City.

These new cafes are actually a good sign for a local economy and city as a whole.

Davao, lately, is a good place for start-up entrepreneurs. It has an environment which levels the competition and supports the small entrepreneurs so it would grow into big enterprises in the future.

Doc prepares for medical tourism
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE president of the Davao Doctor's Hospital (DDH) said the hospital is making efforts to acquire accreditation from the Department of Tourism (DOT) to project DDH as one of the tourist-destination hospitals in the country.

"One by one, we will also renovate our rooms, we will make our hospital very presentable and make sure we offer the best accommodations," said DDH President Dominador Cabrera.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage

View here the list of local winners

Canon to put up 1st service center in Davao City
By Anthony S. Allada Published : 2007-07-02

THE Canon Marketing Philippines Inc. is planning to put up its service center in its branch here in Davao City sometime in July 2008, said Nelson Perez, regional manager of Canon-Davao, in a recent interview.

If materialized, the Canon-Davao service center will be the first among their five branches in the country to cater the repair of their clients’ state-of-the-art cameras and copiers.

“This is part of our company’s commitment to bring service to our clients in the most convenient way,” he said.

He said their experience is when their clients’ Canon cameras would have some defects, the items will still be sent to Manila and would be sent back after months.

“Having a service center in Davao will pave way for these inconveniencies of our clients,” he said.

Other camera dealers here have also still to put up their own service centers here in the city.

Perez said that camera users may now shift in using Canon cameras instead of other brands because of their service center.

Dabawenyo - Yam Laranas already in Canada for filming Echo
Mindanao Times Online
July 3, 2007

DAVAO boy Yam Laranas is already in Canada where the shooting of his Hollywood debut, a remake of his Regal shocker Sigaw, will start by next month.

IMDB reported that the production of The Echo will start by August 13.

In his most recent blog entitled Let The Fun Begin! at his official site (http://yamlaranas.blogspot.com/), Yam said "I will be here (Toronto) until probably middle of September before company moves to New York - hopefully."

In the blogspot, he posted a teaser picture of the shooting location. "We've checked (the location) and LOVED (it) so far," he said.

"I will announce in my next post our lead girl opposite Jesse Bradford. All the rest of the cast will be locked immediately," Yam said. Bradford (Flags Of Our Fathers, Swimfan) will take the role originally done by Richard Gutierrez.

American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee has been rumored to take one of the female lead roles in Yam's Hollywood debut. British actress Amelia Warner of Æon Flux was earlier eyed to take the role of Angel Locsin in the original movie.

Yam wanted Iza Calzado to reprise her battered wife character in Sigaw. Ruben Nepales of the Philippine Daily Inquirer said Iza is still a strong contender. Iza, in a recent interview, said she is stil awaiting confirmation.

Eric Bernt, screenwriter of The Hitcher and Romeo Must Die, is doing the adaptation.

In the remake, the lead role (Bradford) will be an ex-convict who moves into an old apartment building, where he encounters a domestic problem involving a police officer, his wife, and their daughter.

Producing the film is Vertigo Entertainment, the company that remade Asian horror flicks like The Ring and The Ring Two, The Grudge and The Grudge 2 and Dark Water. The company is also doing remake of other Asian horror movies like The Eye and A Tale of Two Sisters, and Shutter. The company behind the Oscar winner The Departed that starred Leonardo diCaprio, is also doing the Hollywood version of hit Korean romantic comedy My Sassy Girl.

Sayang naman at di sa Vancouver ang filming location. A lot of movies are filmed here. Vancouver is the de facto hollywood north of the border. lol

^^ Where exactly is Tionko St? Any landmark? Nice new buildings sprouting like mushrooms around Davao City.

Ok lang..kahit maliliit. These are still considered as investments. At d kaya biro magpatayo ng buildings ngayon. It includes millions of pesos. The mere fact that Dabawenyos (average ones) are erecting their own buildings, it means that the local economy is on the boom that we do not need foreign direct investments just to reshape Davao's physical look.

No wonder a group of architects announced a construction boom around Davao. No need for major or huge ones....But what Davao is experiencing is a spontaneous construction of small to midrise buildings around the city.

We need this to fill the empty spaces around the city proper......then maybe, just maybe...after few years we can start seeing more highrises!

And Davao City is now a highly urbanized city and Tagum is a 1st class city.

Yup..d pa PEZA registered. But they are currently working on it. Sutherland needs to start its operation before December thats why they opted to be in NCCC IT Pavillion. That's what my former officemate said.

70 agents are currently on training jan sa Davao for the softskills. They'll be sent in Makati or Olongapo for the client specs then back to Davao for the operations. They're looking for a thousand agents more....:)

Davao Doctors Hospital prepares for medical tourism
Sunstar Davao
July 3, 2007

Cecil's Snack Inn & Bakeshop, Inc.

My sibs and I, along with Mrs. S, from our office was in CM Recto yesterday for a very important task. We were basically cheerleaders but it was my brother who did all the talking. The meeting ended well and we deserved a good snack from where else...Cecil's.

http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/4881/dsc00024ew5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The driver, R was still stuck in traffic, so we had to walk from San Pedro corner CM Recto to Anda St! It is a relatively near walk depending on what shoes you're wearing but for my sister who was sashaying in high heeled shoes-I feared for her life! Hehehe!

http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/5923/dsc00023zq1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

If somebody asked you to meet up at Cecil's and you'd ask where's that-You are most likely not from Davao. Long before the influx of Jollibee and McDos, the kids in my generation ate at Cecil's. No happy meal here but you'd be going home happy.

They painted the place, bought those nice refrigerated counters, and had new chairs and tables, but still it has the same feel to it. I just wish the servers would smile a bit.

http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/5650/dsc00022rt1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

For our family, the standard order would be Lug-lug, but since Mama and Papa were not around, we got away with the batchoy floating with wicked chicharon. My sister and I wanted the best of both worlds so she had half of my lug-lug and I had half of her batchoy. Shameless. My brother asked for toast but they don't serve it anymore so we had pan de ciosa instead.

http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/702/dsc00025ua3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Definitely one of Davao's food institutions. Lots of snack choices here ranging from cakes, eclairs, dinuguan, cheese bread, batchoy, fresh lumpia, sandwiches, halo-halo, mais con yielo, etc. They even make delicious customized birthday cakes. Once, I had a cake done in a form of a bank check for my sister's birthday with P1,000,000 written on it! Hahaha! Dream on!

Oh by the way, my sister survived the walk. She even had her toes painted red afterwards.

so during the 60's and 70's asa man ang business hub sa davao? coz kita ko sa may magsaysay park may mga old buildings din (ala iloilo) kaya lang di na maintain :( so was that area the commercial hub of Davao then or was it san pedro na gid?

i find it hard to imagine how it was back then kasi im sure san pedro and sta.ana seemed like two seprate worlds then (considering the distance) and im sure there wasnt much built up areas between them

Hehehe!

Cute ang tag 2 lanes nga dalan kung naay mga nice street lights, well designed curbs (maybe brick-lined) and dedicated only to pedestrians. :)

Murag ma figure na nako ni nga lugar...mao ni ang dating naay Safari Bar- the whole complex is huge that used to host a KTV Bar Complex, (the best!) Fine dining restaurant and Safari Bar. Maayo kay gi revive na nila ni nga lugar.
