Belly’s Grill

* by Blogi
* 3 July 2007

Another testament to Davao’s being barbecue country is Belly’s Grill. I believe they opened sometime last year, but yesterday was only my first time there. The place used to be a pizza-and-beer joint called “Sage” (yeah, a few establishments in Davao do have inexplicably strange names). Now it’s a restaurant that serves mouth-watering grilled and seafood fare.

Belly’s Grill deep-fried tuna tail

http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/5417/belly2pt6.png (http://imageshack.us)

We had kinilaw (Davao-style sashimi), scallops, deep-fried tuna tail and bangus (milkfish) belly. Sure we had meat dishes too, but it was the seafood that wowed us. The baked scallops — topped with cheese and garlic — were so tasty we had to have another serving!

Belly’s Grill scallops

http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/1719/belly1wi2.png (http://imageshack.us)

The deep-fried tuna, though, was a tad overcooked. Still, it was a filling treat. Too bad we couldn’t finish it because we ordered too much. I guess we didn’t know just how much we were going to get. The price? An unbelievable P40 per 100g! We had an 800-gram serving…

A friend told me once that the Belly’s spare ribs were highly recommended. But when we had it yesterday, it didn’t live up to expectation. The longganiza, on the other hand, was really good. Not to overindulge, though, since it’s chock-full of cholesterol.

The place itself isn’t wondrously appointed — but people don’t go there for its aesthetics. At least it’s clean and air-conditioned, and the service is OK. It’s a large restaurant, too. Big groups can definitely enjoy lunch or dinner there.

By the way, their fruit shakes, my companions told me, aren’t bad at all. One said she liked the durian shake. There were four of us and we all came away with satisfied palates and heavy bellies.

Belly’s Grill is located on the corner of Quirino Ave. and Mabini St., inside a mini arcade. If you’re coming from the south, it’s right before (and same side as) the Bangko Sentral building.

Dayanghirang wants 2 more congressional districts
By Grace L. Plata

DAVAO City Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang will push for the establishment of two new congressional districts in efforts to increase the internal revenue allotment for the city.

In his inaugural speech Tuesday, Dayanghirang said that the only hope to get more funding from the national government, as a matter of strategy, is the creation of more districts.

Dayanghirang said the allocation for Davao City considering its size is not enough to cater to its needs especially in terms of infrastructure.

As each legislative district gets P150 millions per year as congressional fund, an addition of two new districts will mean the city can also get an addition of P300 million per year.

"For a three-year term, this will transform to an additional P900 million worth of roads, medicines, school buildings and other projects," Dayanghirang said.

Newly-elected finance committee chair Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz, however, said there may be other solutions to increase the city's budget.

"Naa na man atong nang (We already have the) revised revenue code, we just have to strictly implement to widen our tax base," Ortiz said.

"Kung naay (If there are) additional districts, additional need for compensation pud for the congressman, city councilors and other offices that may be created because of it (With additional districts, there will also be an additional need for compensation budget for congressmen, city councilors and other offices that may be created because of it)," she added.

Dayanghirang, for his part, wants to have an increased budget in order to realize infrastructure projects that will benefit the city including the completion of bridge constructions from village Callawa in Buhangin to Talandang in Calinan.

This, Dayanghirang said, will not only provide an easier and more effective transport of goods but it will also shorten the traveling time of people coming from Calinan and Buhangin. Big trucks and buses coming to Davao from Bukidnon can use the bridge as an alternative route that will lessen traffice from the areas of Mintal, Tugbok, Talomo and Matina.

The completion of the bridge is also geared at enticing investors to capitalize in the Mandug area that was already declared as a Special Economic Zone by the City Council.

New services at Davao Doc
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE Davao Doctor's Hospital offers, starting this year, new services as part of its corporate social responsibility to the community.

These services are the Corporate Health Management Program, the Davao Doctor's College (DDC) Privilege Card, and the General Medical Check-up.

The Corporate Management Program is a cost effective alternative to health maintenance organizations (HMOs) for companies, while the DDC Privilege Card would give special discount to enrolled Davao Doctor's students and their immediate family members.

The General Medical Check-up, on the other hand, is a value-for-money package for individuals who want to keep their health in check.

DDH president Dominador Cabrera said DDH, which is celebrating its 38th founding anniversary, also gives free consultation for the poor people and even gives a 50-percent discount on laboratory and x-ray charges.

"If an individual's salary ranges from P7,000 to P10,000 a month, we give 25 percent discount, yun namang P10,000 above, meron din naman kaming binibigay na discount of 15 percent, kung walang-wala, they can consult us and they can pay little by little," Cabrera said, adding that the hospital is giving these privileges to the people as part of their social responsibility.

Meanwhile, DDH identified several milestones for this year.

Aside from the renovation of the Out-Patient Department (OPD) and the construction of the new Surgical Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Complex, it also completed the Nursing Care Building which will house the hospital's medical tourism wing.

DDH also acquired the New iLED 3 Duo Ceiling Mounted OR Light which uses light emitting diodes (LED) to provide virtually shadow-free illumination, shadow correction, infrared-free lens, low heat generation, and enables the surgeons to concentrate more in the operations, thus revolutionalizes their work.

The Mindanao's most advanced ultrasound system is also located in the hospital. Inaugurated in March 2007, the equipment is a top-of-the-line Siemens Acuson Antares Premium Edition with the latest 3D/4D ultrasound system.

Other developments to look forward in the OB-Gyne Department is the renovation of the hospital's Delivery Room Complex and the Women's Wellness Clinic.

Meanwhile, the hospital's Advanced Catherization Laboratory System will be installed in the hospital's Heart Institute by the end of July and will be operational by mid August.

I got star-struck with this tad unassuming, young Torontonian Filipino billiard superstar Alex Pagulayan. So here I am with a photo op with him. I caught up with him ( actually he was 2 seats away from me) on our flight via PAL from Las Vegas to Vancouver. He is the guy in white jacket. We exchanged hellos and I asked him if he knew the Davaoeño billiard king Lee Van Corteza and he blurted a resoungding "Yes! kababayan mo?" I retorted yes he is from Davao too. I went on to say I know him but he knows me a little...

Filinvest Enters into the Sugar Cane Business

Posted in Energy News, Ethanol | Wednesday, July 4th, 2007 | Trackback

fdc_logo.jpgFilinvest, a Philippine Corporation primarily known for its real estate development projects, has made a right hand turn by taking a stab at the emerging biofuel and alternative energy market by purchasing a Mindanao Based Sugar Cane refinery via its holding company, Filinvest Development Corp (FDC).

Filinvest now proudly owns Pacific Sugar Holdings Corp (PSHC) and its two milling facilities: Cotabato Sugar Central Co. Inc. and Davao Sugar Central Co. This was acquired via a share swap agreement between FDC and PSHC’s previous owners, ALG Holdings Corp. ALG Holdings Corp will receive 1.55 billion worth of FDC shares.

According to FDC president Josephine Gotianun Yap:

The swap and the infusion of the sugar business into FDC, will place the company in a position to capitalize on the productive sugar industry in an area with vast expansion potential and the opportunity to venture into allied businesses such as alternative fuel production and power co-generation

Great play by the Filinvest Group to notice the potential income in the emerging biofuel industry. Not to mention that they chose a very good location to invest in biofuels, which is the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. The southernmost island of the Philippines is known for having very good weather, ideal for agriculture. Add also the fact that the 20+ average weather disturbances that visit the Philippines never pass by Mindanao making the island virtually typhoon free. This logically will guarantee a stable supply of sugar feedstock year around.

Another part of the news I’m very happy about is the cogeneration facility that they are thinking of putting up. This will bode well for the grid in Mindanao. Mindanao gets 60% of its electricity from Hydro-Electric Dams, whenever that is unavailable (due to lack of rains) they have to rely on diesel generators which leads to the extreme yo-yoing of electricity rates in the island. At least the addition of another renewable source of energy (be it just of small value and powered by bagasse) would help to alleviate the price of electricity whenever the water source is low.

Hat tip to Filinvest!

Mayor to cabbies: Display your IDs

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte Wednesday ordered taxicab drivers to display their identification cards prominently effective Thursday. Violators will be charged immediately.

These were the mayor's instructions to the police Wednesday as he turned over 12 new vehicles intended to increase the mobility of law enforcers.

"Paraha ninyo kung makit-an ninyo nga walay ID nakasabit. Ayaw mo ug kahadlok (Stop them if you notice that the taxi drivers are not displaying their IDs. Don't be afraid to do that)," Duterte said adding he has received reports that conmen masquerading as taxi drivers have been victimizing both locals and tourists in the past weeks.

"Ang uban ani nila, gina-holdup pa ang mga pasahero tapos 'pag nahuli, tinatakot pa ang mga pulis na kakasuhan (Some rob their passengers and when caught threaten the policemen that they will be sued). The policemen naman na dili gusto nga makasuhan (who doesn't want the hassle of a lawsuit), they bargain the law and let the perpetrators go," Duterte said.

Thus, the mayor starting Thursday ordered the implementation of the transportation guideline which requires drivers to display their ID's facing the passengers and to wear proper attire so that they can easily be identified should they cause grief to the passengers.

"Ang mga pulis pud, dapat dili mo mahadlok (Policemen shouldn't be afraid) because what you are doing is in performance of your duty. Kung hadlukon mo na kasuhan, sagdi lang. Basta naa mo sa tama (If they threaten to sue you, let them. For as long as you are doing right), I will even provide a lawyer for you," Duterte said.

The mayor warned the criminals to stop or answer to him personally.

"At the end of the day, they would have to deal with me," Duterte said adding he is only doing this to protect the economic efforts of the city, which can be interrupted should peace and order be threatened. (GLP)

Divers now training in China
By Marianne Saberon-Abalayan

MEMBERS of the Philippine diving team led by Davao City's Sheila Mae Perez are now training in China under a new coach tasked to help them prepare for the 24th Southeast Asian (Sea) Games set December 6 to 16 in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

Former RP diving Chinese coach Zhang Dehu, who mentored the sterling five-gold medal haul in the Philippines 23rd SEA Games in 2005, is no longer with the team.

"We have a new coach for them (divers) in China and we will hire a coach for Philippines from China as well. The sudden retirement of Zhang has left us in a quandary but we must move on," said Philippine Amateur Swimming Association (Pasa) president Mark Joseph in text messages to Sun.Star Davao Wednesday.

Joseph said the country's divers are still expected to live up to their billing.

"Our chances are good," Joseph said.

Perez, 2005 SEA Games triple gold medalist whose family now resides at the Tibungco Relocation site, leads the cast of the RP diving team that is also bannered by fellow Dabawenyos Jaime Asok, Ryan Fabriga, Zardo Domenios and Ni¤o Carog, among others.

Perez' three-meter synchronized springboard partner Ceseil Domenios, however, hadn't been joining recent training at the Trace Aquatics Center in Los Baños, Laguna.

Because of this, there's a possibility that Perez might not be able to defend the gold in the event without Ceseil in Thailand.

When asked about this, Joseph refused to comment.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) William "Butch" Ramirez accompanied the divers and other athletes to China last week.

Mix bowling at Fairlanes

A TOTAL cash prize of P40,000 plus trophies await the winners of the 22nd Kadayawan sa Davao Mix Bowling Tournament slated to open on July 31 at the Fairlanes Bowling Center.

Organizer Sunday Bowlers Club (SBC) president Emie Orteza said there will be two divisions in the bowlfest.

"It will have the regular government/non-government and commercial divisions," Orteza said.

He said each participating team must field a lady player in every game.

The teams will play 10 games in the elimination round where the top three teams will enter the step-the-ladder championship round.

In the championship, the No. 3 team will play No. 2 where the winner will challenge the twice-to-beat No. 1 team. (MLSA)

Signs of Times By Peter Laviña
Golf boom

Golfers at the City Council were complaining that they would need to queue up to one week to play at Lanang.

The Korean invasion of our golf courses is now being felt badly by the locals. They feel that they have become “second class” citizens of sort in their own turf.

Well, the same feeling is actually manifested by the Korean head of the Asian Golf Tour. There is a very interesting fight going on between Asian and European golfers. Unfortunately, the game is not being played at the fairways but in the boardrooms.

Kyi Hla Han, executive chair of the Asian Tour was “aghast” and “furious” at the invasion of European Golf Tour events in Asia .

Without consulting the Asians, European Tour announced a new golf tournament in Jeju Island , Korea on March 13-16. The $2.6 million event will be sponsored by Scottish whisky maker Ballantine.

Earlier, the European Tour also announced the $2.5 million Indian Masters also without the sanction of the Asian Tour.

Han felt the “invasive” attitude of the Europeans - “for stepping out of their boundary” - as an affront to Asians.

Ha, ha, ha! That is exactly the feeling of locals too like Councilor Boni Militar and Dado Mahipus on the influx of Korean players in the city.

The Korean golfers are not only bumping off the locals; prices at the courses have skyrocketed too. Golf cart rentals, for instance, shoot up 50 percent. Even a regular Japanese golfer at Lanang noted that a can of cola now costs P100.

Should we ascribe this matter to the immense popularity of the game or to unfettered globalization?

My own take on this issue is to settle it on the greens. May the best parbuster win?

Fore!

* * * * *

There are currently four golf courses in the city, namely, Apo, Lanang and Palos Verdes, all 18-holes and Matina, which has only 9 holes.

Two other courses, South Pacific at Catalunan Pequeno, and Suncity at Panacan, need to be completed pronto now that there is a golf boom. I am sure that Exe Robles of Sta. Lucia would not want to miss this opportunity.

As one of the largest cities in the world, Davao has plenty of space for such in-demand facilities.

Under the city’s investment code, developers of golf courses are qualified to seek incentives under either the property development or tourism-related facility areas of preferred investments.

* * * * *

With the exit of Luis Bonguyan, Jimmy Dureza and Rene Elias Lopez, the City Council is now left with only three golfers.

In addition to Militar and Mahipus, only Nilo Abellera plays the game.

Honestly, I do not know if newly-elected Councilors Louie John Bonguyan or Kaloy Bello or Tomasing Monteverde play with Big Berthas or would want to be seen soon with irons, woods and umbrella girls.

Wounded Philippine eagle rescued in South Mindanao

by T. Quiblat

Davao City -- The chief of a Tiruray tribe from Isulan, Sultan Kudarat rushed to the aid of an injured Philippine Eagle in Sitio Kamanga and brought the bird to environment officials in Tacurong City last August 19.

Realizing that the eagle is an endangered species, Sultan Sinangayan, a datu from Sitio Kamanga, Barangay Laguilayan in Isulan, allegedly confiscated the bird from a native on August 17 and transported the eagle to the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Tacurong City two days later.

The endangered eagle, nursing a gunshot wound in the neck area, was then turned over to Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) on August 25. The bird was allegedly one of two eagles reported to have been shot in the locality recently. However, no information was available on the whereabouts of the other eagle.

CENRO staff coordinated with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region XII office in Koronadal City in contacting the PEF and arranging for the recovery of the injured bird.

DENR's Estelita Corpuz and Ma. Ramonette Ealdama, who attended a PEF-organized training on research and management of eagles and other raptors early this year, positively identified the bird as a Philippine Eagle and proceeded to administer the appropriate care for the injured animal - a crucial step as improper handling is often the cause of further injury to rescued eagles.

The rescued eagle, believed to be an adult, was alert and active in spite of its wound when the PEF rescue team arrived. PEF veterinarian Dr. Rheyda Hinlo was relieved to report that the prognosis for the eagle was good, adding that x-ray examinations showed no abnormalities and no embedded bullets as initially feared.

"We're glad that the eagle looks like it's going to recover; still, this incident is evidence of the sad fact that hunting of eagles continues and that has got to change," PEF executive director Dennis Salvador said.

He however added that "on a positive note, the incident also showed that there are a growing number of people like Datu Sinangayan who recognize the value of the Philippine Eagle and are helping the country by protecting its wildlife and natural resources. They're providing the cue for everyone to follow."

The Isulan eagle will be monitored in the next few days while it recovers. Given the circumstances of the rescue of the eagle, the PEF believes that a release back to its natural home is not likely. The eagle is being considered for inclusion in the conservation breeding program

Davao City may consider electronic jeeps
Sunstar Davao Online
July 5 2007

DAVAO CITY -- The City Government of Davao is now waiting for "takers" who are interested to invest on "electronic jeepneys" now being tested in Makati City.

City Administrator Wendel Avisado said the idea of having electronic public utility jeeps running in the city streets instead of the diesel-powered ones would greatly help the city in their fight against pollution.

But Avisado was quick to add that the city wants the private sector to pioneer in this new investment area.

Avisado said the idea was first brought to the city fathers' attention in 2005. Back then the proposal was however on electronic buses and not jeepneys.

"It's good to look into this. Right now we are still waiting for takers. The city would look forward to more concrete steps on the part of the private sector on this initiative and we will look into where we can provide the much-needed support," he said.

Kuyawa sa taxis sa davao karun oi! I had the opportunity to ride one of the chevrolet cars... not sure the model... pero it was cute outside and comfy inside... carless society ako that time... and that was 2 weeks ago. Wow, bilid ako sa aking lupang (ciudad na) sinilangan.

And... I can't wait to see the Greenbelt park formally inaugurated... i bet it will be one hell of a showcase for Davao. I'm so excited. I can se huge sculptures figuring all over the Greenbelt park's landscape... and that dome... WOW! Reminiscent of the durian-inspired esplanade theaters of s'pore.

Trade mission to Saudi bears fruit for Davao
Davaotoday
July 5, 2007

The trade mission conducted by a Mindanao delegation to the Kingdon of Saudi Arabia has been constantly raking in tangible results.

The trade mission, spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry – National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center (DTI-NERBAC) Davao, was made on February 23 to March 5. The 14-man delegation was composed of businessmen from all over Mindanao and some officials of DTI 9 and 11.

Based on the latest data gathered, Sagrex Foods, Inc., the company which introduced the Pinoy fries (frozen banana fries), and microwavable ripe Cardava banana and turon, recently sent some samples of its products to various KSA markets/clients.

“The over-all acceptability of Sagrex’s products was very positive. The traders and distributors as well as the OFWS there expressed intense desire for the products to be made available in the market,” said Trade Assistant Secretary Merly M. Cruz said.

The Pinoy Fries is being positioned as an alternative to French Fries, particularly for the 1.4 million overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in KSA.

Maharlika Agro-Marine Ventures, on the other hand, is set to fly back to KSA this August for the finalization of its business plans with some Arab businessmen.

Moreover, Maharlika will likewise start the registration of its poultry farms to be sold to the OFWs. These farms will be monitored by the OFW buyers through virtual farming technology.

“This is one way of developing overseas Filipino investors (OFIs),” Cruz said.

The Mindanao Pearl Center, meanwhile, reported that a P2.5 million worth of pearl southern bangles is now under negotiation between them and a company in KSA.

“These are actually tangible chances for the Mindanao businessmen to expand their production volume which will result to an increased profit,” Cruz said.

In addition to the whooping success of the mission, it was learned that a bottled sardines producer in Zamboanga City was successfully promoted by DTI 9 Assistant Regional Director Sitti Amina Jain and has been able to establish tie-ups with an Arab businessman. Initially, the company, YY Sea International, has already received an order of P37.9 million, P4 million of which has already been paid by the buyer as downpayment.

“The businessman arrived at the International Food Expo (IFEX) held last month in Manila and he immediately looked for YY Sea International. The fact that this buyer came to the Philippines just to meet YY Sea International is a clear indication that he really is interested with the company’s bottled sardines,” Cruz said.

Cruz is optimistic that in the coming days, more reports of positive outcomes will be relayed to DTI-NERBAC Davao by the other members of the mission.

Among the supporters of the mission were the Autonomous Region in Mustlim Mindanao (ARMM) local government, Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCO), Mindanao Business Council (MBC), and Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, inc. (DCCCII).

Real estate is Davao’s new investment favorite
DavaoToday
July 5 2007

Real estate in the region soared again during the first five months of the year.

Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) acting regional director Paul Francisco, during the “Government in Action” forum today, bared that most of the new investments in the region registered in the early part of the year are in the real-estate industry.

“In previous years, we were getting investments from the agriculture and tuna industry. But this year, there has been a remarkable increase in the real-estate sector, along with services and wholesale trading,” Francisco added.

Recent data showed that SEC has registered 194 new corporations, 73 percent of which are in the Davao region.

The commission also recorded about 788 million pesos worth of paid-up capital stocks in Regions 11, 12, ARMM, Surigao, and Agusan.

SEC also noted the significant increase in investment poured in by two Singaporean investors, particularly targeting the banana industry in Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley Province.

Meanwhile, Davao City Chamber of Commerce president Domingo Duerme said the chamber believes that business is booming in the region as manifested by the new investments that opened.

“Koreans are coming here not just to play golf or to learn English. But most importantly, they have been starting business around the region”, he said.

Duerme, the senior vice president of the Philippine Airlines, based the present growth and development on the number of visitors in hotels and business parks.

“There had been no reduction of visitors and investors,” he said.

Davao chamber is focused on small businesses
DavaoToday
July 5 2007

DAVAO CITY — The Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry is focusing on the development of micro, small and medium-scale enterprises, which comprise about 99% of registered businesses here in Davao.

“Of the 31,000 registered businesses here in Davao City, only 200 are considered big companies the rest are SMEs and micro-enterprises.” said Atty. Domingo Duerme, President of DCCCI during the “Government in Action” media forum held last July 5 at the Association of Regional Executives of National Agencies (ARENA) office in Catitipan.

He said the DCCI is helping them with trainings particularly on capability-building and in facilitating various financial windows which these enterprises could avail.

He said they are also helping in advocacy particularly on the aspect of ordinances and laws which would affect or benefit business.

Atty. Duerme said that DCCCI is growing with its present membership of 400 individual and corporate members, and added that about 50 individuals and corporate entities are applying for membership in the chamber.

He said the business climate in the city is bullish as it is attracting investors and investments. Duerme hopes that peace and order would be stable to sustain its attractiveness to new investments.

Duerme also noted the potential of a huge market in China, which he saw during his visit there a few weeks ago.

PAL bullish on Davao, air industry
by RG Alama

Davao City (6 July) -- The Philippine Airlines is bullish on the prospects of Davao and the growing airline industry as it is in the midst of modernizing its fleet and offering new promo packages to consumers.

According to Atty. Domingo Duerme, PAL Senior Assistant Vice-President for Mindanao, Davao and Cagayan de Oro are few cities in Mindanao which are attracting investors.

He said people are coming in to Davao. He said that PAL has at least five flights here in Davao connecting to the country’s major hubs Manila and Davao. He said the airlines is using A330 wide-bodied, large-capacity aircraft to Davao.

Duerme said PAL is in the midst of a refleeting program where it will have an airbus fleet to make its parts inventory easier. PAL is acquiring state-of-the-art A319 aircraft which will have 126 economy class seats and 8 seats for Mabuhay class. The aircraft also features an inflight-Video entertainment in each seat.

The flag carrier is also acquiring new Boeing 777 wide-bodied long-range aircraft for its regional flights part of its ambitious refleeting program.

Promo packages are also being offered by the airline which includes the “buy one take one” promo in which purchasers of Mabuhay (business) class roundtrip domestic tickets entitles him to a free international roundtrip Fiesta-class tickets. (PIA XI) [top]

^^ This is nice. This would make Davao as a city of entrepreneurs! One of the reasons why it is best to invest in Davao is the community's support to SMEs. Small entrepreneurs are given a chance to fairly compete in a metropolis where the playing field has been leveled. Thus, small businesses can grow to major ones. Proof of this is the success of businesses which started in Davao and are now making their presence felt in the Visayas and Luzon.

It's about time Davao takes the lead in promoting business, now that the Mayor has lain the pipes of peace and order.

City may consider electronic jeeps
By Ben O. Tesiorna

THE City Government of Davao is now waiting for "takers" who are interested to invest on "electronic jeepneys" now being tested in Makati City.

City Administrator Wendel Avisado said the idea of having electronic public utility jeeps running in the city streets instead of the diesel-powered ones would greatly help in their fight against pollution.

But he was quick to add that the city wants the private sector to pioneer in this new investment area.

On Wednesday, Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, along with Greenpeace Southeast Asia campaign director Von Hernandez and Solar Electric Company (Solarco) president Panch Puckett, launched two electronic jeepneys for a test-run that will last for three months.

The "e-jeepneys," a prototype vehicle powered by rechargeable batteries and organic waste, is an innovative project designed to steer clear of the use of fossil fuels and help mitigate climate change, even as it addresses urban problems such as air pollution and solid waste. (With Sunnex)

Davao chamber eyes unit to extend microfinance loans

July 5th, 2007

DAVAO CITY – The Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. has planned to extend small loans to the city’s small and medium enterprises, a plan initiated since 2003 but was passed off by changes in the chamber’s leadership, a chamber official said.

Sofronio Jucutan, former DCCCII president who is heading the executive committee of the Small and Medium Enterprises Week 2007, told reporters a study was completed in 2004 and was approved by the chamber’s then board of trustees on the creation of a corporation from the chamber to handle the proposed microfinance unit for SMEs.

The Small and Medium Enterprise Development Council, where DCCCII is a part of, is holding the 2007 SME week from July 16 to 21 here.

Jucutan told reporters at the Club 888 press conference Wednesday one of the factors hampering growth of the SMEs is their poor access to microfinance to usher in business.

Davao dads bat for a city college for deserving, poor students

By Janice on Jul 5, 2007 in Schools

Two Davao City councilors stressed the need for the creation of a city college that will cater to poor but deserving students here.Conveying their legislative agenda in the first session of the 15th city council Tuesday, Councilor Pilar Braga expressed her dream of putting up a college that will offer educational programs affordable for the less privileged who aspires to finish a college degree.

“This dream has already been realized in the cities of Manila and Makati, where the local governments put up their own colleges for this purpose. They now have the Pamantasan ng Maynila and Pamantasan ng Makati,” she said.

Councilor Diosdado Mahipus said college education is the only way for the poor to be emancipated from poverty. He expressed alarm that the impoverished state of the 90 percent of the city’s population will worsen in the next three years in the absence of any solution to respond to the educational needs of their family members.

Mahipus said the city government can put up its own city college given its annual income of P3 billion pesos as it is a premier city.It can no longer be a political promise but a political reality under the leadership of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte,” he said.

DCCCII, InWEnt to promote social management system

by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (6 July) -- A German institution in partnership with the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) will embark in promoting and implementing social management system (SMS) in Mindanao.

DCCCII president Atty. Domingo T. Duerme said the Davao business group tapped Internationale Weiterbildung Und Entwickling gGMBH to increase SMS awareness as part of Corporate Social Responsibility among Philippine-owned enterprises.

Duerme said the project will run for 16 months where InWEnt and DCCCII will jointly implement the promotion of the program, provide training and dialogue activities in some parts of Mindanao where both will promote the SEAL project through SMS.

The project focuses on caring for the employees for them to become productive although it needs a system as a tool for implementation, he said.

Part of the scheme is to hold foras with Chief Executive Officers of companies in some areas of Mindanao many of which are found in Davao, Cagayan, Zamboanga, Caraga.

The SMS he said sets basic standards on child labor, forced labor, health and safety, working hours, the right to collective bargaining agreement, compensation and management system.

A memorandum of agreement was signed between Internationale Weiterbildung Und Entwickling gGMBH based in Makati City represented by its Regional Director-Manila, Mr. Olaf Neussner and DCCCII President Atty. Duerme. (PIA XI) [top]

Trade mission to KSA leads to actual business exchange

by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (6 July) -- The trade mission initiated by the government and the private sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) early this year resulted to the firming up of agreements for actual business exchange.

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Assistant Secretary Engr. Merly M. Cruz reported that one of the products that has gained positive response was the Pinoy Fries that will be marketed to the 1.4 million Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in KSA.

The Pinoy Fries which is being positioned as alternative to French Fries and introduced by Sagrex Foods Inc. recently sent samples to various KSA markets/clients and earned good results as the over-all acceptability of the product was very positive.

Cruz said traders and distributors as well the OFWs expressed intense desire that the products, namely frozen banana fries, microwavable ripe Cardaba banana and turon, be made available in the market. Business arrangements are on- going.

Cruz on the other hand said that Maharlika Agro-Marine Ventures that caters to poultry products is expected to fly back to KSA next month to finalize its business plan with some Arab businessmen.

She said the registration of the plan to sell poultry farms to OFWs will also commence even as she said that OFW buyers can monitor their investments through the virtual farming technology. The scheme is one aspect of developing OFWs as investors, she said.

The other project is being carried out by the Mindanao Pearl Center where a P2.5 million worth of pearl southern bangles is now under negotiation between them and a company based in KSA.

She further said that a bottled sardine producer in Zamboanga City that was extensively promoted by DTI 9 Assistant Regional Director Sitti Amina Jain was able to establish tie-ups with an Arab businessman.

Initially the YY Sea International has already received an order worth P37.9 million and P4 million of which has already been paid by the buyer as down payment.

The buyer who came to Manila for the International Food Expo (IFEX) last month made no hesitation and forged an arrangement with YY Sea International for a steady supply of bottled sardines.

The trade mission was spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry - National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center (DTI-NERBAC) Davao on February 23 to March 5 with a 14-man delegation composed of businessmen all over Mindanao and some DTI officials.

The trade mission was supported by the local government of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCO), Mindanao Business Council (MinBC) and Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII). (PIA XI)

City needs P5M more to fund 'Kadayawan'
By Grace L. Plata

DAVAO City needs to raise some P5 million to fund the week-long celebration of the Kadayawan Festival this August. Thus, the City Government of Davao will be welcoming donations and sponsorships of any kind.

City Administrator Wendel Avisado said the allotted budget of P700,000 will not suffice to cover the expenses during the celebration, hence the city needs the help of the private sector.

"Smart Telecommunications has already manifested interest to co-sponsor the event and we are hopeful that more companies and some well-meaning Dabawenyos will be doing the same within the month," Avisado said.

Avisado, on the other hand, reiterated there would be no Hiyas ng Kadayawan for this year.

"We wanted Boy (Guino-o) to handle ‘Hiyas’ but he is abroad at the moment and there is no one else we can find who qualifies," Avisado said.

The Kadayawan Festival steering committee will be co-chaired by Avisado for the government sector and Abdullah Aquino of Vicsmin for the private sector.

Events like the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan and the Floral Float Parade can still be expected in next month's festival.

Aside from "Hiyas," absent will be the Bagobo Horsefight and the Kaan Dawet (Piging sa Daan) usually hel on Roxas Avenue.

250 players sign up for Shell chess

SOME 250 woodpushers have signed up for the 15th Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship Davao leg set on September 15 and 16, at the SM City entertainment plaza.

Leg coordinator Ronnie Tabudlong, who guested during Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn, said interested players may still register.

But he said only 500 chessers will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis as directed by the Shell management.

"We encourage players to sign up early to avoid the cut-off of entries," Tabudlonh said.

The chess tournament features the juniors 20 years old and below (born not earlier than 1987) and kiddies 14-below (born not earlier than 1993).

Participants must fill up the registration form with an attached 1X1 ID picture, certified true copy of birth certificate and P50 registration fee.

Tabudlong said he may be contacted for queries at mobile number 0918-3590531 and telephone number 300-4260.

The juniors leg champion will receive P5,000 cash, trophy and a slot to the national finals set October 20 and 21 at the SM Mega Mall.

The next two placers will book tickets to the nationals with P4,000 and P3,000 cash prizes.

The fourth placer will take home P2,000 and P1,000 will go to the fifth finisher.

In the kiddies event, the top three players will also compete in the nationals with P4,000, P3,000 and P2,000. They will also claim trophies.

The fourth and fifth will pocket P1,000 and P500, respectively.

Special awards will go to the youngest player, top youngest player, overall top female player, sportsmanship award and school most represented in two categories. (MLSA)

Milo Marathon Davao leg kicks off Sunday
By Marianne Saberon-Abalayan

CLOSE to 10,000 runners will answer the starting gun when the 31st National Milo Marathon Davao City leg kicks off at 6 a.m. on Sunday at Rizal Park.

Milo events sports executive Pat Goc-ong said this during a luncheon press conference at Davao Dencia's Restaurant Friday.

"We have over 9,000 registrants as of this time. We are hopeful that we will reach our target of 10,000 entries by cut-off time this afternoon," Goc-ong said.

He said Davao had a record field of 9,308 entries last year. Thus, they are aiming to surpass the 2006 turnout in this year's edition.

"A total of P159,000 worth of cash prizes will be given away to 80 marathon winners and 16 side events winners in the Davao leg," Goc-ong added.

The race features the three-kilometer run for 12 years old and below, 5K men's and women's open and 21K men's and women's open categories.

The side events are cheerdance, biggest delegation, and best average team.

Davao City's Joan Banayag is the reigning National Milo Marathon women's champion. She is set to show defend her Davao women's 21K title on Sunday.

"We're happy that the national female champions for the past three years came from here. It's really our goal to discover new talents nationwide," race director Rudy Biscocho said.

Milo has earmarked a total of P4.5 million cash prize for the 24 legs including the national finals this year.

The event is organized in coordination with the city government of Davao, Traffic Management Center, Rescue 911 and Filipino-Chinese Firefighting Brigade, among other agencies.

Baker for a day
By Janette Huang Teves
Mom-about-town

I AM a big fan of cooking shows on TV. I find them entertaining, relaxing and educational. Don't be deceived though, I am no domestic goddess. When it comes to preparing food, "Rachael Ray's 30-Minute Meals" is more my kind of style-fuss-free and with short cooking time.

However, now that Mindanao's first culinary school recently opened in Davao, there is hope for culinary-challenged parents like me!

Center for Asian Culinary Studies (Cacs) Davao

The Center for Asian Culinary Studies (Cacs) Davao, operated by the Holiday Gym and Spa (HGS) Spa Group, is envisioned to be Mindanao's culinary school for cooking enthusiasts and professionals.

It has experienced and dynamic cooking and baking instructors who are all active food industry consultants and practitioners using best-equipped classrooms and modern, state-of-the-art equipment from Europe and the United States.

An affiliate of Cacs Manila, it offers a full range of courses in cooking, baking and pastry, wine, health nutrition, chocolate artistry and food business management through Technical Education and Skills Development (Tesda)-accredited Certificate Program in Cooking and Baking Skills as well as Intensive Cooking and Baking Skills.

(Showbiz trivia: After studying under Chef Gene Gonzales of CACS Manila and Cafe Ysabel, popular film and television star Judy Ann Santos was awarded a silver medal for the Certificate Program in Cooking and Baking Skills as well as a gold medal for Advanced Skills in Cooking and Baking last December 13, 2006.)

It likewise gives one-day lifestyle courses which provide focused theme lessons for hobbyists, food enthusiasts and restaurateurs/caterers who wish to gain additional knowledge from Cacs' pool of over 400 tested recipes.

Re-engineered baker

Recently, I attended the one-day "Pambaon (Snack) Treats" lifestyle course together with fellow moms Vanessa Mae Santos, Jeankie Leuterio, Rebecca Gay Mercado, Annabelle Beldua, Bobsey Gan, Ana Tan, Mai Mai Carriedo, Bai Lim, Sarah Pednablanca, Mary Rose Crodua and Debbie Hao.

It was the perfect group for me. I was relieved to know that there are also mothers out there who are not so adept with their basic baking skills.

Our eminent instructor was Ma. Erwina "Booboo" Carandang-Maramba. Interestingly, Booboo is a licensed chemical engineer (summa cum laude graduate from Ateneo de Davao University) who pursued her love of baking and cake decorating, and turned it into a highly successful business.

She is the owner of the popular Davao-based Natalie's Cakes and Pastries which creates exquisite wedding and birthday cakes and supplies sinfully delicious sweets to major hotels and coffee shops in the city.

Booboo is the first accredited Wilton Method Instructor in Mindanao and Visayas. The Wilton School of Cake Decorating and Confectionary Art based in Chicago, U.S.A. is a private vocational school that has been the world leader in cake decorating education for generations.

Baking since the age of 12, Booboo has also trained with esteemed baking and cake decorating experts Avelina Florendo, Sylvia Reynoso-Gala and Heny Sison.

Joining Booboo at Cacs Davao is Chef Paddy Lascano, the brilliant Executive Chef and consultant of the Bangayan Group of Companies and Villa Margarita Hotel.

Baker for a day

At the start of the class, Booboo introduced the basic baking tools and methods. She shared several tips on how to keep cakes moist for a longer time (use corn syrup); measure butter (do you know that there are lines in the butter's packaging for this purpose?); determine if the cake is ready (stick toothpick on the side and not the center); among others.

For the "Pambaon Treats" session, Booboo generously shared her personal recipes for banana loaf, chewy butterscotch fingers, peanut butter swirls, moist chocolate cupcakes and oatmeal raisin cookies. These are healthy and preservative-free snacks for the whole family.

The students were divided into several groups and had hands-on experience in preparing and baking their assigned treats in the fully-equipped kitchen.

Between turns, I had fun engaging in "food talk" with newfound friend Chef Jenny Tan, a visiting instructor of CACS Manila who also works as the cooking segment producer of "Michelle Simone's Entertaining At Home" (a Filipino-produced cooking, crafting and decorating show on cable TV which is one of my favorites).

Like Booboo, Jenny is an engineer (Industrial Engineering graduate of De La Salle University) who has the passion for culinary arts.

To everybody's delight, the baked goodies turned out great! The moms excitedly tasted each recipe and even brought their own 'baunans' (containers) so that their husbands and children can savor their yummy creations.

With permission from Booboo, I am sharing two of her heavenly recipes for you and your family to enjoy. (See the recipes on this page).

You got served!
May 22, 2007

I would like to share with you some of my favarite tamabayans here in Davao City. So, my friends there in Bawayan City, Dumaguete City and Cagayan de Oro City…check this out! The place where I ate breakfast, lunch and sometimes dinner (meron na nga akong suki-card,waaa! just kidding!). It’s only small but safe and clean cafeteria or should I say a small eatery. (Sorry, If I don’t have the correct term of describing it *winks*). The cafeteria is located at Ponce Street corner Guerrero street, Davao City and It’s a WIFI zone area. WOW! so, while eating or waiting for your orders you could surf the net or chat with your friends using your laptop (just don’t bring your desktop, ayt? that would occupy bigger space! hehe.). Now, let’s talk about the food they served. It’s more likely a "Tapsi" you know what I mean? ummp, I guess you do but I still want to describe it.

The Beef tocino w/ rice, Ham cubes w/ rice and more but the "Pork Tocino with rice" and with an egg is my all time favarite. Umm, yummy! They also served drinks, but no liquors! Coffee, Ice tea, cola and juices. The service is good, it would not take long to serve your orders. The place is clean! and it’s an open air. You know the place am taking about? - Gian’s D’Breakfast Club! Yes, it is! So, if you’re looking for a place with a great and quality service, visit Gian’s D’Breakfast Club. Now, I am advertising them…I hope the owner would find this blog and give me some credits on saying good comments to their services..Haha! or maybe a FREE breakfast meal! sana! haha!

So guys, what are you waiting for? Tambay na sa Gian’s D’Breakfast Club.

Felis Resort

You can sit at the bar see the ocean and view Apo mountains at the same time.

A few days ago my friend and I were invited over to the Felis Beach Resort,
Davao for the evening. My friend had met the owners on a professional level a few days before and had got on well with them thus the invitation followed to attend an evening of celebration at the Resort.I had never been to the Resort before so it was a new experience for me. My friend had visited during the daytime and had said how lovely it was there so we were looking forward to the event.I am always blown away by how hospitable the Filipinos are and this night was no exception. These people (the owners) did not know my friend that well and they had never met me before, but we were made so welcome. The friendliness and warmth of the people in the Philippines is beyond compare and this fact was continued here throughout the evening. Not only were our hosts delightful and friendly but all the staff working at the Resort were too, exuding a warmth and professionalism that was truly impressive. We sat down to a delicious dinner first, sitting under cover but near the water. There was a very relaxed atmosphere and ambience but you could see this did not breed slackness or laziness within the service that we received. The waiters were polite and friendly and efficient. Their customer service training appeared to be spot on, as often, forgive me for saying, in thePhilippines this can be sorely lacking.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/3750/felissunset10oct05131vn2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

There was no confusion with our orders, we were attended to quickly and happily and a very pleasant dining experience was had.Unfortunately as it was evening time and was dark, I could not see around the Resort properly, but my friend had taken some pictures on his previous visit and it did look lovely. So with pretty surroundings complimented by excellent customer service, it was a pleasure to have visited the Felis Resort. After our meal, our hosts informed us that the celebration performance was due to start in the hall area. We made our way over there and took our seats at a table. There were many tables laid out and as the evening progressed the venue did fill with people, but unfortunately due to terrible weather conditions all day many people appeared to have canceled. This was a shame as the evening was very pleasurable and I can say those people who did not attend missed out on a great time. The performers on stage were great fun, displaying instrumental and rhythmical talents, some of them enjoying themselves thoroughly. We were also treated to some “ribbon dancing” displays and “fire dancing” too.Wherever I have attended an evening of entertainment in the
Philippines it has always been tremendous fun with shows of great talent. It is something I really admire in the culture. Where does all this talent come from? How does it come so naturally? It really is a pleasure being a guest, being on the receiving end of such things. Foreigners like myself are always made to feel so welcome and special. I also feel very safe here and thats a great thing.Thank you to our hosts and the staff of the Felis Resort for yet another great Filipino experience. You all do it so well.

http://www.dpwh.gov.ph/news/img/07/bankerohan.jpg

Immediately after the collapse of its pier a week ago, the Department of Public Works and Highways-Region XI Office has conducted a structural integrity assessment as it has closed to traffic the 56-year old Bankerohan bridge (Governor Generoso bridge) in Davao City. DPWH-Region XI Director Dimas Soguilon said that in compliance with the instructions of DPWH OIC-Secretary Manuel Bonoan, they are now preparing the detailed plan for the bridge reconstruction, which is a major requirement for funding allocation. Soguilon further informed that the after the construction of a new bridge, they still allowed the use of the old bridge to facilitate the flow of traffic along the heavily travelled Davao-Cotabato Road (Mc Arthur Highway), one of the main entry points to Davao City from other parts of Central and Northern Davao-Cotabato Road (Mc Arthur Highway) Gov. Generoso bridge is vital in the daily economic activities of Davao City as it serve as one of the major access road going in and out of the city and a major component of the Davao road network. “Though the Davao City local government had given us a period of eight moths to finish the bridge reconstruction, we shall target to complete the project within six moths if funds will be made available soon,” Soguilon said. Recently, DPWH Assistant Secretary Rafael Yabut, in-charge of Mindanao operations has also conducted an ocular inspection on the bridge. He further instructed the DPWH Region XI Office to determine the cause of collapse and to come up with remedial measures needed to restore the normal flow of traffic. Together with DPWH-Bureau of Design bridge experts and hydraulic engineers, the investigation revealed that the bridge collapsed due to old age because it has already served twice its expected lifespan. The deck slab sagged by 20 centimeters, but due to the bolted joints, it prevented the main bridge from collapsing. The proposed reconstruction of Gov. Generoso Bridge involves the construction of 180 lineal meters of Pre Stressed Concrete Girder bridge on bored piles, removal of 162 lineal meter Steel I-beam superstructure including piers and other existing structures and obstructions, bridge approaches and flood control structures. To date, in coordination with the local government unit the bridge was already closed to traffic, warning signs and informative signs on the alternate routes were already installed and the dismantling of deck slab is on-going to prevent further damage on the bridge.

City readies traffic scheme for Kadayawan
By Grace L. Plata

THE traffic scheme for the upcoming Kadayawan Festival this August is shaping up with the accreditation of various festival events starting Friday.

Traffic Management Center (TMC) chief Celso Gempesaw said, “TMC is coordinating closely with City Hall to ensure that no accredited activities of the private sector will be held in the city's main thoroughfares, just like the street parties in the past.”

"Ang uban magbutang ug stage sa tunga sa dalan unya naa pay inom-inom. Karun, dili na gyud na tugtan (In the past, some groups were allowed to set up concert stages in the middle of the street as well as closed down streets for parties. That will no longer be allowed)," Gempesaw said.

The only activities allowed on the city's streets are the traditional Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan and the Floral Float Parade.

TMC is taking careful thought of the traffic situation in anticipation of the hordes of local and international tourists who plan to join the Kadayawan revelry.

This is especially so because the Governor Generoso Bridge 1, which is one of the main links from the south to the downtown area, is still being rebuilt, hence TMC would have to plan for the possibility of a congestion twice the size of the ones during the past Kadayawan celebrations when the Governor Generoso Bridge 1 was still functional.

Organizers plan another cyber exposition in '08
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

WITH the success of the first cyber expo in the Philippines, which was held in Davao City last week, the e-Squared Events Organizing is planning to conduct another cyber exposition next year to continue with its aim of making Davao the leading cyber city in the country.

"Expect more events from e-Squared. We will continue to uplift the image of cyber culture, to put it into a higher ground, to promote responsible use of cyber space and technology, and to make Davao City as the leading cyber city in the Philippines," Leonardo "Kitsi" Avila VI, president of the e-Squared Events Organizing, told Sun.Star Davao.

Avila said the number of registered participants from the first day of the event until its last day increased from 1,350 to almost 3,000 on its last day.

"What we only need to do is to continue these events and the advocacies," he said.

The first Cyber Expo was held at the Activity Center of the NCCC Mall in Matina on July 4-6.

Avila earlier said the activity not only aims to promote the city to be the best cyber city in the Philippines, but it also aims to uplift the image of cyber culture in Davao. "Most people, when they hear the word Internet, negative agad ang iniisip, pornography and others, we want to eliminate that," Avila said.

Avila added with the continuous holding of the activity in the city, it could be a start of the discoveries of the best animators who could be recognized in the future not only locally but internationally as well since forums on animations were also conducted.

Abusive cabbies named, warned
By Ben O. Tesiorna

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte came up with another list of what he considers as people who give him constant headache: taxi drivers reported to have duped, harassed or caused the death of their passengers.

In his television program "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa" Sunday, Mayor Duterte identified these "headaches" as Sol Cuaresma, Loloy Orquillas/Lutgardo Orquillas, Rolando "Ungo" Reponte, Tomas Tagbar, Rex Tagbar alias Balanghoy, and alias Ryan.

Duterte said these are the names of taxi drivers who have been reported to have forced their passengers to disembark when they refused to settle for a fixed rate instead of a metered travel or who have duped their passengers by rigging up their taxi meters so these run faster than their supposed calibration.

The mayor particularly mentioned Rolando "Ungo" Reponte who, he said, was the driver of a taxi that met an accident that resulted in the death of three of his passengers.

"Kini si Ungo, paminaw mo. Nagbiyahe ka og Gensan, pagbalik nimo nanghambog pa ka na tulo ka pasahero nimo namatay. Naka-shabu ka 'dong? (This taxi driver named Ungo, listen. You were said to have traveled to General Santos City and upon your return you were even boasting your three passengers died. Are you using shabu)?" Duterte said over his program while apparently addressing Reponte on the chance that the man was watching.

The mayor said he also received reports that the owner of a "taxi terminal" outside the Davao International Airport also threatened the chief aviation security officer with harm over minor differences.

He, thus, warned this terminal "owner" to watch out as well.

"Police official ing-anaon nimo (You dare threaten a police officer)?" he asked.

Duterte also observed that taxi drivers who are waiting outside the DIA are also gambling while waiting for the arrival of passenger planes. He said these results in low income of the taxi drivers who are thus forced to do dupe their passengers to make a fast buck.

"Kamong akong gipanganlan, pamili mo. Ayaw mo ug pagminaro kay ang inyong mayor ang pinakamaro sa tanan. Naminaw ba mo, nanumpa ko (All of you whom I have named, listen. Do not even try to put one over anyone because your mayor is more crafty than any one of you. You listen up. I swear) that I will do everything humanly possible to protect the people and the interest of the city. Karon pamili mo. It's your choice," Duterte warned.

The mayor then quipped that had he not become a lawyer and then the mayor, he would have long been among those summarily executed for criminal acts, implying that he has done his share of devious acts.

Apex plans to expand operations
By Amy R. Remo
Inquirer
Last updated 01:32am (Mla time) 07/06/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- Apex Mining Co. plans to raise mining production in Compostela Valley by expanding its operations.

The company intends to increase its output this year to as much as 3,000 dry metric tons of ore a day from the current 500 tons. The plan, however, is hinged on its ability to obtain an environment compliance certificate soon.

Rogel C. Cabauatan, environmental manager of Apex, told reporters that Apex was planning to expand its mining area from the current 500 hectares to cover the entire 2,300-hectare mineable area in Masara, Maco in Compostela Valley.

?Through a certificate of noncoverage, Apex was allowed to operate in the Masara mine with a minimal production even without an ECC. This is an old mine which had shut down years before and had begun commercial operations in December 2005, almost a year after it was acquired by Crew Gold,? said Cabauatan.

Crew Gold Corp. holds a 72-percent stake in Apex.

He said the company had submitted all the requirements for expansion, which included an environmental impact assessment.

To further expand its mining operations, Apex had earlier participated in the bidding for North Davao Mining Corp., which was reported to have huge gold reserves.

Cabauatan said Apex was in a position to bid for the old mining company given the proximity of its processing plant to the area of NDMC.
He said Apex was also eyeing sites in South Cotabato but no exploration had been done yet in the area.

Aside from gold, Apex was also planning to venture into nickel mining given the metal?s high prices and possible lucrative markets.

The company was looking for nickel sites in Mindoro, where Crew Gold has key projects including a development-stage nickel-cobalt site.

Davao call center boom raises manpower poaching concerns
Asia Journal Online
July 9, 2007

DAVAO CITY - At least three major call center companies are planning to put up facilities here, raising fears of rampant manpower poaching.

Andre Fournier, chairman of the information and communications technology committee of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII), said poaching was already a problem in Manila-based call centers.

Instead of strengthening competition, the entry of new players were causing the industry to stagger, he said.

Fournier said the DCCCII is working with existing call centers here to prevent the already booming industry from degenerating.

The city has five existing call centers. Two have been categorized as "big" —G-Com Ltd. and Link 2 Support.

Fournier said these two call center companies were the most apprehensive over the coming of three similarly large IT firms, which include the United States-based Sutherland Global Services.

"DCCCII's efforts formed part of its commitment to position Davao City on top of the IT environment this year," he said.

Among the efforts, Fournier said, was the drafting of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with call center companies for the equitable distribution of call agents to thwart poaching.

"The MOA will request call center operators to work together and look at competition from a constructive point of view," Fournier said.

The MOA empowered IT schools to recommend qualified graduates to work in call centers.

The scheme would help reduce the poaching of manpower, he said.

Fournier said reasonable salaries, better workplaces and security were among the factors being considered to reduce piracy.

Teolulo Pasawa, chief of the Department of Trade and Industry in the city, said the strengthening of the peso has been pushing call centers to move out of Metro Manila.

He said the decision was also based on cheaper cost of labor in the countryside and the availability of areas accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA).

In this city, PEZA has already accredited the Damosa IT Park in Lanang.

Officials have forecast over P1 billion in earnings and 16,000 jobs by 2010 with the mushrooming of call centers here.

Joji Ilagan-Bian owner of the JIB e-Academy, a call center training facility, said the rosy forecast has prompted her to expand operation in other parts of Mindanao.

Brokenshire College

Transforming Evangelical Christian institution in Mindanao
http://www.mb.com.ph/issues/2007/07/06/SCAU2007070697247.html

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

An awe-inspiring necessity for medical services in Davao City propelled the Board of Commissioners for Foreign Mission of the Congregational Churches in the United States of America, now the United Church Board for World Ministries (UCBWM), to send missionaries Rev. and Mrs. Robert Black to the Philippines. In 1908, the first medical clinic was set up at the bank of Bankerohan River along Magallanes Street in Davao City by Mrs. Mary Matthewson, an American Red Cross nurse, along with Dr. & Mrs. Charles Sibley, also missionaries of the UCBWM. The clinic later expanded and became the Davao Mission Hospital.

In 1926, a young and adventurous American medical physician by the name of Dr. Herbert Brokenshire administered the hospital until the outbreak of the World War II. The name Davao Mission Hospital was then changed to Brokenshire Memorial Hospital in honor of Dr. Brokenshire for his 15 years of indefatigable dedication. In 1954, the Brokenshire School of Nursing was established as another product of the American missionaries’ incessant commitment of providing health care to the Davao community. In July 16, 1957, the school was registered as a separate non-stock, non-profit educational corporation related with the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP).

The Brokenshire School of Nursing continued its growth as more students enrolled in the Graduate Nursing (GN) course. In 1957, the College produced 23 students as its first batch of graduates. In 1965, the hospital and the school were stressed with fire and the following year they were transferred to its present site at Madapo, Davao City with a five hectare area allotted for the school. In 1978, the Board of Trustees decided to expand its program from the GN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). It then changed its name to Brokenshire College. The first batch of graduates under the BSN program was in 1981.

In response to the needs of the members of the UCCP community in Davao City, the High School program was added in 1984. The first high school graduating class was in 1987. It was on the same year that the Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education (BSECEd) was opened. In 1985, the Business Administration course was offered but due to the dissenting opinion in the change of school director, the school failed to apply for the Authority to Operate. The Preschool and Elementary programs were opened in 1989. In 1993, it re-opened its BSBA program together with the Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (BEEd) and the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd).

In 1997, the AB Psychology was converted to BS Psychology. The year saw the beginnings of the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) and the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) courses. The courses were in answer to the increasing demand for technology courses. The Pag-asa School of Theology was later merged with the curriculum of the college which offered Bachelor of Arts (AB) in Theology and Christian Education.

Likewise, in 1998, the Secondary curriculum was enhanced in the fields of Science, Mathematics and Technology which eventually led to the conversion of the high school into a Science High School.

While suffering some reverses in terms of student population during the school year 1997, the Academic Year 2002-2003 became a milestone for the college. An upsurge of enrolment that year in the BSN program was experienced as other courses gradually picked up.

PRESENT TIMES

The onset of globalization affected almost all aspects of human existence. Institutions of learning are not exempted from these phenomena. They cannot ignore emerging technologies, material, equipment and new ways of organizing to the delivery of services and marketing. Whether these institutions are profit or non-profit oriented, they wrestle with today’s environment in its never ending focus on quality, continuous improvement and customer satisfaction.

At present, Brokenshire College is ISO 9001:2000 certified. TUV SUD Phil., Inc., a certifying body, granted the certification last April of 2006. Having the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certification, the college had passed the international standard requirement for a Quality Management System (QMS) and offers competitive edge to its students and graduates to be globally competitive. It's the first ISO-certified academic institution in Davao City, Brokenshire College sticks to its quality policy of providing value-oriented quality Christian education through continuous improvement and total involvement for customer satisfaction.

The global demand for nurses has been increasing over the years and this totally changed the course of the journey of Brokenshire College in the field of health care education. This led to the tremendous upsurge in the enrollment in the nursing program without negating the setback that was experienced in the past. The College thus, was able to recover from its losses. AY 1999-2000 witnessed a decrease in enrolment with only 68 students in the Nursing program. However, a comeback was to be seen in AY 2001-2002 with a 210% increase in student population and this trend continuous up to the present. Academic Year 2006-2007 welcomed a total student population of 4,962 with 3,930 enrolled in the Nursing program.

To be able to comply with ISO requirements, level of Accreditation, and to accommodate the increasing number of enrollees in the College of Nursing, additional buildings were constructed, state-of-the-art facilities were acquired, and the number of hospital affiliations were increased. Likewise, the College of Business Administration, Arts and Sciences, Education, Information Science and Theology (BASE-IST) are incessantly upgrading its curriculum to better serve the other academic needs of the college. Recently, the College started offering the Upward Mobility Program (UMP) which caters to the working class high school graduates who are employed as household help, drivers, janitors, and small scale entrepreneurs. UMP provides opportunity for these workers to obtain an undergraduate degree thru a specialized two-day (Friday evening class and whole Sunday class) academic program.

In response to President Gloria Arroyo’s advocacy thru the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) for the development of the Filipino youth, Brokenshire College is now offering a Ladderized Program in Hotel and Restaurant Management. The College also offers Medical Transcription (MT) program which is registered by the TESDA and with a four-month modular class approach. The program is also competence-based and students learn at their own pace.

The College is investing and keeping abreast with the latest technology with its computer-based Christian Education. It utilizes the latest technology in the teaching-learning process in all courses offered. It is globally acknowledged that learning no longer takes place only within the confines of the four walls of the classroom and that the teachers are no longer the sole sources of learning and information. The e-learning Method of Instruction is thus born. The campus is open 24 hours for online study and the students can have access anywhere even at home, in a friend’s house, or even inside the comfort of an internet café through CD-ROM. Through the e-board (electronic board), students simply answer questions electronically and in a minute or so, results can be ready for the use of the teachers and the students.

Now, the College envisions its eventual transformation into a university. The College sees itself as the leading learning and transforming Evangelical Christian Institution in Mindanao ten years from now. By then, its graduates are making a difference in the world with the values and the principles instilled by the college thru its host of competitive and robust administrators, faculty and staff whose capabilities are built through a consistent program for development.

FLAGSHIP COURSES

Brokenshire College is a pioneer in the field of nursing education in Davao City. It is internationally known for having produced competent nurses. its alumni have carved their names here and abroad. The College was granted Accreditation Level III for the Nursing Program under a team of accreditors from the Association of Christian Schools Colleges and Universities Accrediting Agency, Inc. (ACSCU-AAI). Brokenshire College is one of the nine schools accredited level III in the country. With competent faculty and clinical instructors, the college consistently maintains a passing rate above the national passing percentage. 1995 is considered the most fruitful year for the College as fourteen of its graduates made thei way to the top twenty of the Nurse Licensure Examination. The December 2005 NLE also showed its graduates bagging the 1st,6th and 7th places while the December 2006 result had its graduates occupying the 4th, 7th and 8th positions in the top ten.

A study entitled "High-Performing Teacher Education Institutions" that was conducted by Dr. Adriano A. Arcelo, President of AIG and Associate Researcher and Development Corporation and former President of the Fund for Assistance to Private Education (FAPE), showed that Brokenshire College was among the top performing schools and actually ranked 13th with a 76% passing rate among the 20 schools in the country with a cluster of 10 to 99 examinees for the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) administered by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) from 1996-1998. All courses, other than the Nursing program, are accredited Level II.

The College is unrelenting in its quest to be known not only as an excellent institution of the nursing profession but also in business, education, and information technology.

Brokenshire College gets ISO 9001:2000 Certification
http://www.mb.com.ph/issues/2007/07/06/SCAU2007070697248.html

With the escalating number of academic institutions in the country and abroad, it is essential that organizations look into the quality of service they provide to see to it that its thrust for excellence is achieved and upheld.

This was the ultimate goal of Brokenshire College as it started its journey toward ISO 9001:2000 certification. The concept is a pro-active step and part of its preparation for advanced level accreditation to ensure that Brokenshire College continuously improves its services to assure its clients of customer satisfaction.

ISO 9001:2000 is an international standard that gives organizations requirements for "Quality Management System" (QMS) and is the only standard in the ISO 9000 family that can be used for the purpose of conformity assessment. The International Organization for Standardization, more commonly known as ISO, is the body that develops and publishes the standards (source: ISO 9001-2000 brochure).

Under the tutelage of its ISO consultant Engr. Helen Evalle, the academe reviewed its systems and policies and assessed the performance, needs, and potentials of the college. A series of internal audits were conducted until finally, auditors from the TUV Phils., Inc., an accrediting body, visited Brokenshire College last April 20-21, 2006. During the closing meeting the visiting TUV auditors announced satisfaction on the institution’s systems, facilities and amenities in accordance with ISO requirements and thus all three auditors were in consonance in recommending certification. BC was again audited last April 2007 and the result was positive.

"Being ISO certified, the college offers competitive edge to its students. As the first nursing academic institution in Davao City with ISO 9001:2000 certification, Brokenshire College sticks to its quality policy of providing value-oriented quality Christian education through continuous improvement and total involvement for customer satisfaction. The administrators, faculty and staff thank the Board of Trustees for believing that the college can cope with the challenges of the times and for supporting endeavors toward leadership and excellence," says Rev. Leopoldo R. Naïve, president of the college.

Brokenshire College is working toward the fulfillment of its mission as a learning organization engaged in the pursuit and diffusion of knowledge through the highest standard of instruction, research and extension. It tries to live a life of faith, learning and action that develop people to become intellectually competent, sensitive, spiritually mature, aware and responsive to the needs and aspirations of the community as it tries to manage and develop wisely all resources to ensure sustainable growth of the institution as responsible stewards of God and contributes to the realization of a just, free and responsible Christian social order.

The success of Brokenshire College in its ISO 9001:2000 certification was made possible by the total involvement of all members of the institution. Truly, when there is unity everything is at hand.

This year marks the 53rd founding anniversary of Brokenshire College. It is a week-long celebration from July 10 to 16. The pioneering batch of its graduates under the Graduate Nursing (GN) course will celebrate its Golden Jubilee. Those who are residing abroad are coming to their Alma Mater to reminisce their happy days in the college.

The College is honored with the success of its graduates here and abroad. Fides et Servitium (Faith and Service) is the guiding principle of all Brokenshirians and their mentors in their quest to excel in their professions. The college pays tribute to the honorees who have put into practice the lessons of their profession and have lived their lives according to the values instilled in them by the College.

It is the tradition of the College that the activity culminates with the Medical Mission. It is a joint project of Brokenshire College Clinic and the Community Extension Office, together with the Brokenshire Alumni Foundation International (BAFI). The following medical services are offered for free: blood sugar screening, medical consultation, dental extraction and "Operation Alis Bukol" where volunteer doctors and alumni nurses perform minor operations. These services are rendered annually as BC’s way of reaching out to the marginalized sectors of the community.

Another most-awaited event is the "Search for Miss Brokenshire College 2007". For this year’s panel of judges, members of the pioneering batch will have the privilege as well as the responsibility of selecting the best candidate to carry the crown and represent the College by exemplifying the virtues befitting a Brokenshirian. The presence of Batch ‘57 will surely serve as an inspiration to all students aspiring to do extremely well in their professions as they leave the portals of this institution.

The Bahay Alumni will serve as the quarter of Batch ‘57. The Bahay Alumni is a hostel built through the funds of the alumni and stands as a symbol of their unwavering support to their alma mater.

The Grand Alumni homecoming will be held at the Grand Menseng Hotel, Magallanes St., Davao City, Philippines on July 12.

the old brokenshire hospital got burned in the mid 60's... the property was vacant for some time till the Men Seng group got it for the hotel.

the brokenshire dorm was partially burned only... was bought by the Bernardo family... in fact.. portions of the dorm was still standing till late 80's.. the Bernardo family replaced it w/ a concrete bldg.

the Makati rest. was an empty lot before anything else..

The area is called such, I think, because the transmitter station of the Bureau of Telecommunications, no'ng uso pa ang telex and telegram - the wireless communication at that time, was located in that area. I think the old building of the Bureau still stands somewhere along the southend of F. Torres Street. And also within the vicinity are radio stations and RPN near Marfori Heights. It used to be Davao's "Transmitter" Hill. At present, it is Shrine Hills.
