The hevenly taste of Mam Bebs’ pastries
A blogger friend, brader Andrew, promised to bring some “cookies” from her aunts’ newly opened bakeshop - Mam Bebs bakeshop and refreshment parlor (formerly known as La Suerte Bakeshop) - yesterday during one of our get together.
But, he didn’t bring the cookies! hmpf!
Instead… he brought this one…
http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/5927/z008qn8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
I was all smiles after seeing the box.. brader drew said it had some pastries inside. I waited to get home to open it.
When i did get home, i asked my 2 house mates to gather around and enjoy the view.. hahhahaha.
I opened the box and as the famous reporter Gus Abelgas would say ” eto ang TUMAMBAD sa aming harapan”
http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/5652/z010ds9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/4754/z013au2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
In less than 2 minutes, everything inside this beautiful box was gone!
The mini ensaymadas (i think that’s what it is) [update: its called potato rolls] was soft, with cheese inside and had the right amount of butter to add to the taste. After eating 4 shares i said ” its so sweet!” I think Mam Bebs should lessen the sugar coating. But believe you me, It tastes good!
Next thing i tried was the banana cake bar [update: they sell banana cakes]. Unlike the usual banana cakes bar in other bake shops, this one is fluffy yet packed (i hope you get what i mean). The smell is like its making you want to eat the whole slice at once (well of course you need to peel the paper first before eating it). Inside your mouth, you’ll feel the soft and the creamy touch on your tongue. And then you’ll just be surprised that you’ve already eaten the whole thing and wanting for more!
Last i ate was the cinnamon Apple pie.. Cinnamon is one of my favorites.. [update: now i know its apple pie.. but it tastes like cinamon.. oh well.. its still delicious] I smelled it after opening the box and so i said i’ll be saving the best for last.. And it didn’t fail me! It was like eating a soft cookie with a tasty, creamy, delicious filling inside! It had the right sweetness and the right amount of flavor!
With the external presentation, this would be a lovely gift for friends or loved ones. Actually, my 2 house mates will be bringing some to Manila during their vacation. And for sure. i’ll be bringing some too.
I’ll also be giving a box of Mam Bebs to my friends who will be coming here in Davao during the Kadayawan Festivities like Christian Bautista and to the road manager of some PBB2 house mates (i don’t know which house mates she’s handling). Don’t get me wrong.. I’m not boasting that they are my friends.. my point here is that this product is so good, that these guys will surely like them. Gets?
If your visiting Davao, try some…
Mam Bebs bakeshop and Refreshment parlor is located at:
1/F CVA Bldg., CM Rector St. Davao City.

“I think we’ve got a case of a little coal here that is gona turn into a diamond” - That’s Amanda’s comment to Paul Potts during his first audition for Britain’s got Talent.. And Paul Potts did win. And i think this will also be the case for Mam Bebs.

Dabawenyo artist in one-man show, book launch here
A STRING of masterful works by Davao City's award-winning artist, Teody Boylie "Bong" Perez, will be on view at the Ballroom Hallway of the Royal Mandaya Hotel from August 7 to 21.
His art book "Fragments of Truth: The Painted Essays of Bong Perez" will also be launched on August 7 at 6 p.m. to coincide with the opening of the exhibit.
View here the list of local winners
Perez's paintings in oil, acrylic, pastels and watercolor include landscapes, flowers, ethic art and culture and people in urban places.
What distinguishes Perez from other painters is his avant-garde creative process which integrates the use of modern technology.
Perez explains: "There are so many ways by which today's modern technology can assist artists in their quest for producing art. From my research, I discovered that renowned artists in the past were always exploring new ways and invented new devices to make their jobs in creating art much easier."
In his case, Perez combines digital and conventional techniques by using the computer as an imaging tool; and the final work rendered in the traditional media.
The art show, presented by Gallery J, in cooperation with Royal Mandaya Hotel, marks Perez's comeback to the local art scene after a six-year award-rich stint in the Land of the Rising Sun.
It will showcase works he created in a span of almost nine years, including his piece "Flea Market," which won the Excellent Award in the 36th West Japan Art Competition of the Bridgestone Museum of Kurume City, Japan in 2003.
This earned him the recognition as the sole foreigner in the entire history of the annual competition to win the award.
His art book is authored by no less than Michaelangelo Ebro Dakudao, Ph.D., a highly respected art writer-critic from Davao City.
The hard-bound coffee table book essays his life and works and offers a glimpse into his creative process and painting technique.
National Artists for the Visual Arts Benedicto Cabrera, wrote in his preface for the book: "His dedication to his craft impelled him to seek higher learning in Japan. Even in his encounter with a dominant foreign culture, Bong still maintained his sensitivity to as well as pride in his Filipino heritage, particularly his Mindanaoan tradition. Bong's passion and skill have been recognized both here and abroad through various awards and citations."
Although Perez is a Davao City thoroughbred, he is perhaps more popular and better appreciated in active art circles in Nagasaki, Saga, Hiroshima, Fukuoka and Kurume Japan, having spent six years as a Japanese art scholar, earning in the process a Masters degree in Art Education at the Saga University, Japan (2002) and a Ph.D. on Plastic Expression in Fine Arts at the Kyushu Sangyo University, Japan, (2005).
He had a series of solo art exhibits in such prestigious Japanese art centers where he won the acclaim of critics, capped by an Award of Excellence. Perez indeed proudly earned the patronage of discriminating Japanese dilettantes.
For the record, however, Bong Perez, who graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Ford Academy of the Arts in 1991, has won seven first-place awards in a span of three years in various art competitions in Davao City from 1987 to 1990, prior to his winning the Japanese scholarship.
Upon his return to the Philippines in 2005, he got his start as a Special Lecturer at the Philippine Women's University, Institute of Fine Arts and Design, Manila.
Into his third month of teaching, he was nominated to the "Thirteen Artists Awardees of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
He recently came back to his hometown Davao to be with his family and to fulfill a promise he made to himself that he would impart whatever knowledge he has acquired in the field of visual arts to his own community when the time comes. At present he teaches Humanities at the University of the Philippines Mindanao.
Perez welcomes the opportunity to share his creative process and painting technique with Art and Humanities students through informal lectures at the exhibit site. Interested student groups may call Gallery J for an appointment with Bong Perez at 299-3041.

Completion of Mati wharf expansion expected by August 2007
By Ms. Neela G. Duallo
City of Mati, Davao Oriental (24 July) -- In a month from now, an expanded Mati wharf will transcend into the sight of every Matinian.
By August, the wharf expansion will end, as revealed by Ms. Aida Pajo, Port Manager of the City of Mati.
Pajo added that the contractor of the expansion project must take full responsibility in completing the expansion as stipulated in the contract, otherwise, they will be liable by law.
The expansion covers 80 meters, 20 meters of which covers the right wing, and 60 meters covers the left wing of the wharf.
"After the expansion, the repair of the dilapidated portion of the wharf will start. That portion also covers 80 meters," Pajo said.
Vice-Governor Mayo Almario is very happy with the development.
"I am very grateful to the Philippine Ports Authority, to General Manager Oscar Sevilla. If because of his nod after my series of persistent approach for PPA to help fund and materialize the project during my incumbency as District Two Representative, this could not have come to reality", he said.
The wharf expansion is a very timely development as Mati now waits to reap the fruits of cityhood.
With the expansion and renovation of the wharf, this will mean a more active economic activity in the City of Mati and province of Davao Oriental.
The project is estimated to cost PPA about P60 million pesos.
Aside from the wharf expansion and renovation, other priorities of the city government of Mati include the delivery of health services, fighting the drug menace in the city, addressing environmental concerns, housing and resettlement services, a bigger building for the Sangguniang Panlungsod, and the completion of Mati Park and Baywalk. Schools to participate in Davao City greening
by Prix D Banzon
Davao City (24 July) -- While the Davao City business sector endorsed Resolution No. 4 during the 7th Davao City Business Conference to the city government to reinforce existing resolutions for the greening of the City, the Davao Association of Colleges and Schools (DACS) initiates a tree stewardship project along the Davao River.
At the Kapehan sa Dabaw at Cefe Reysus of SM City Davao, Reynaldo Eliseo, chair of DACS Community Extension Committee said the project is not just planting of trees.
He said to go with it is to able to produce development plan as well engage in policy advocacy where the program will be backed up with legislation.
Davao City he said still needs trees and several stakeholders are willing to join the call to plant and nurture the trees where initial site is from along Davao River from barangay Waan to Bankerohan while the area along Ma-a has already got the commitment of the barangay.
Meanwhile, the DCBC '07 Resolution No. 04 indicates among others for the city government to urge if not compel, all commercial establishments to ensure that living plants be placed inside their offices, not only for beautification purposes but also to improve the working conditions of their employees.
It said that living plants lessens the impact of pollution and cleanses the air of particulates that pose a threat to health.
The Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) through Resolution No. 4 recommended that priority areas be identified for tree-planting activities and the communities in the areas be engaged with the information campaign and actual tree-planting.
It also asked the Davao City Council to set aside funds for the purpose.
Eliseo on the other hand said that with the DACS initiated project as highlight of its sponsored Environmental Summit the tree stewardship program will be awarded to communities that will take care of the plants for the first three years if only to sustain environmental protection. (PIA XI) [top]

There's money in Davao garbage, says foundation
By Rose B. Palacio
Davao City (24 July) -- Once again, the city government, through the Davao City Beautiful foundation, has proven that there's money in garbage.
In a bid to help barangay folks, the city government in partnership with the education department and TESDA is now undertaking various projects by collecting trashes and wastes from garbage that are still useful in the production of slippers, bags, belts, aprons and many other uses, both for women and children.
Former City councilor Marlene Librado of the Davao City Beautiful foundation said at present, DCBF has its own project implementers who are expert in the production of various items made out of trashes.
One of the most successful livelihood projects can be found in Dumoy where mothers and other disadvantage women have their own regular income out of the useful garbage they have collected, she said.
Different livelihood projects by the use of garbage are now being conducted in barangay areas for the women sector to be able to earn their own living, Librado said.
We all know that indiscriminate burning of trashes in households, on the streets and at dumpsites causes air pollution. What we do is collect useful garbage that can be used for the production of various products and can be sold out at very affordable prices, and we found out that women in the different barangays are making money out of it, she said.
Librado said apart from this livelihood projects we are currently undertaking; we also disseminate the proper waste disposal to be able to make the people understand the need to maintain a balance between development and environment protection.
Davao City Beautiful is helping our city government in beautifying our city streets with clean and healthy environment which is for the good of all, she said.
Improper waste disposal is one major problem in flooding, air pollution and unhealthy place to live in.
We are tapping barangays to make a living and minimize the huge piles of wastes, she said. Barangays may coordinate with the DCBF and ask on how to do about making a living out of this garbage. The office of DCBF is located just at the ground floor of the City Engineer's Office, City Hall compound, Davao City. (PIA XI)

tj_brewed July 24th, 2007, 06:17 PM DAR employees oppose Davao transfer
ABSCBN News
Employees of the Department of Agrarian Reform disagreed with President Arroyo's proposal to transfer the agency's headquarters to Davao City since majority of the people they serve are based in Luzon.
The employees told ABS-CBN News that they would be able to help more "clients" if the DAR central office is kept in Metro Manila, specifically, on Elliptical Road in Quezon City.
Majority of the country’s farming lands are also located in Central Luzon.
The employees said they are also apprehensive of being separated from their families if the transfer pushes through. Some are even contemplating getting an early retirement package in order to remain with their families.
On the other hand, some employees said they doubt that the transfer would push through because it would be a long process of adapting to another culture in Davao.
During her State of the Nation Address on Monday the President that DAR will transfer to Davao and at the same time "devote 30 percent of its program budget to Mindanao."
Aside from DAR, the President made a similar announcement regarding the budget programs of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Agriculture.
The proposed transfer is part of Mrs. Arroyo's program to revitalize regional growth and development in her last three years in office.
Dubbed as the "super regions" program, the President aims to decentralize economic growth from Metro Manila and usher in development to the provinces.
The proposal was also a follow-up to a similar directive made by Mrs. Arroyo during her SONA in 2004.
In that speech, the President proposed that the Department of Transportation and Communication be transferred to Clark Field in Pampanga; the
Department of Tourism to Cebu; and the Department of Agriculture to Mindanao.
In that SONA, she proposed that the DAR be transferred to Iloilo.
As of this posting, however, the headquarters of the government offices mentioned remain in Metro Manila. With a report from Sheryll Mundo

Rajah_Soliman July 24th, 2007, 10:33 PM Davao gets P200-M new investments
http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/0216&172007/headlines05.html

DAVAO CITY—A fresh investment of P200 million came this early from three companies, two of them in food processing, as the city’s investment monitoring body has set a target of P2 billion in investments for the rest of the year.
The new investments came from Microtel Inn and Suites, which launched last year its P100-milllion 50-room project in the Damosa area, and from a food processing firm and a service provider in the food industry.
The last two projects were already in their construction stage, said Roberto Teo, chief of the Davao City Investment Promotions Center.
Although Microtel launched its project last year, it invested about P80 million this year in the continuing phase of its construction that was expected to last for the next eight months more.
Teo said many other inquiries were made, mostly from Korean nationals, and these were in tourism, such as hotels, inns and restaurants, and in education, mostly in English-language programs.
The prospects for a serious investment though were nil as Teo said that “they wanted to wholly own the project which we cannot give, because we would violate the Constitution”. The Philippine Constitution restricts foreign ownership to 60 percent.
He said that Koreans “definitely know that we have this law but I would understand them because some of them would complain that their Filipino partners were extorting money from them.”
“But this is not happening only in Davao. You would hear this thing elsewhere,” he said.
Teo expects the bulk of new investments to come from the food-related sector “because of our agriculture industry that needs support, and it would be good due to the added value.” Davao’s economy depends largely on banana exports, although it also earns from its mango and coconut products.
He said his office would like to see investments breach the P2-billion mark.
In 2005, the city earned a total of P112 billion in investments and taxes, with new investments reaching P1.4 billion. Last year, investments surpassed the P1.7-billion target by P47 million.
Rajah_Soliman July 24th, 2007, 10:37 PM More Asian direct flights going to Davao City

DAVAO CITY—Silk Air and Asian Spirit would either open or add new international flights to this southeastern Mindanao seaport in what local tourism officials and tour operators hoped would send wider signal to at least the Asian regional airlines to try the southern Philippine destinations.
The twin moves of these airline companies were on top of continued familiarization or chartered flights from other Asian capitals, including a large tour from China.
Gian Carlo M. Caguiat, Mindanao manager for sales of Silk Air, said that it would add one direct Davao City-Singapore flight, increasing the direct flight weekly to four. The airline company operates daily flight on this route, with three of them still on a stopover flight in Cebu City. The additional direct flight would be started by May this year.
The decision was made on its 10th year of operating the Davao City-Singapore route that saw increasing occupancy rate of its 142-seater Airbus 320.
Within the last three years alone, the airline company carried 18,677 passengers, both inbound and outgoing, in 2004 that increased to 24,769 by last year. The Silk Air is one of six airline companies serving direct and connecting flights to Asian destinations.
Asian Spirit, on the other hand, would launch next month, on April 14, its nonstop flight on the Davao City-Incheon, South Korea route, according to Rhaine Kang of the I Love Golf (ILG) Inc.
Jacob Yuk, also of ILG Inc., said the route would be tested by a group of 60 Korean golfers from Incheon, which would take the Incheon-Clark-Davao extended flight. He said the golfers would come here on Saturday for a three-day tour and rounds of golf games in exclusive golf courses here.
Wanda Teo of the National Association of Independent Travel Agents also announced on a recent launching of a tourism project promoting this city that another new airline was already applying for the Hong Kong-Davao City route and would begin operation by either late May or early June this year. She did not name yet the airline but said the company would fly the Thursday and Sunday time slot using the 164-seater Boeing 737.
Other reported flights to Davao City, but mostly on extended trips to their national capitals to Clark airport in Pampanga, appeared to have conked out after Frederick San Felix, manager of the Air Transportation Office here, said that there were no applications filed so far with the Civil Aeronautics Board for the Davao route.
Sonia Garcia, director of the Department of Tourism for the Davao Region, said that Air Macau, which announced a December 2006 launching of its flight and had put up an office, said that its application was still being worked out. The flight would connect this city to the historically known trading port of Macau in China.
She said that travel and tour operators here have already positioned themselves for a wider link with counterparts in China in preparation for the expected mammoth attendance in the Beijing Olympic Games next year.
“We want to have those visitors there, even a little percent, to visit us here direct to Davao and we want our travel and tour companies here to prepare for it,” she said.
Silk Air’s Caguiat said that his company was already approached by a group of travelers and tourists from China “asking for a familiarization tour” to Davao City.
“We hope that we could generate a lot of interest from other foreign airline companies to make Davao its alternative destinations too,” Garcia said. Her office, has also launched the Gateway Davao, a localized promotion campaign to increase interest in using the Davao Airport for, at least, their departure area to whichever domestic or foreign destination.

TO expand power capacities in the Mindanao grid, Aboitiz Equity Ventures unit Aboitiz Power Corp. is in talks with several banks on financing for the 42-megawatt (MW) Sibulan and the 30-MW Tamugan hydroelectric power plants.
“These two projects will be financed using internally-generated fund as well as through a project financing loan from local banks. We’re still in talks with the local banks for a syndicated loan to project finance the two projects,” Luis Miguel Aboitiz, senior vice president of Aboitiz Power told reporters at the sidelines of the League of Corporate Foundations CSR Expo 2007 launch.
The cost of constructing the power plants is estimated at P9 billion, according to Aboitiz. The amount the banks will possibly finance is still in discussion.
Aboitiz said they are looking at getting a longer-term loan from the banks. The Sibulan project, which will generate power from the Sibulan River, will include the construction of the two power plants, access roads and transmission lines and is designed to operate for 25-years.
Tamugan, on the other hand, will include the construction of three power plants, weir overflow dams and impounding basins and a tunnel that will divert water from Talomo to Tamugan River.
These will be undertaken by Hedcor, a subsidiary of Aboitiz Power. The power plants will hopefully ensure adequate power supply in the area.
“We target to have the groundbreaking for Sibulan next month, after having secured all the necessary permits, while the groundbreaking for Tamugan is set for next year. The output of the two power plants will be sold to distribution utilities in the Davao area that will include Davao Light and Power Corp.,” Aboitiz said.
Aboitiz Power to go public

ABOITIZ Power Co. (APC) has set for July 16 the listing of its shares at the local bourse, making it the third company to go public this year.
In an offering circular submitted to the Philippine Stock Exchange Tuesday, Aboitiz Power said it will start a domestic road show on June 15. The international road show follows from June 18 to June 29.
The offer price per share, on the other hand, would be determined on June 30. Once the price is set, APC would commence the domestic offer period from July 4 to July 10.
This initial public offering (IPO) involves the sale of 1,739,130,435 primary common shares and an over-allotment of up to 260,869,565 common shares. The over-allotment portion is distributed to accommodate an oversubscribed offer.
Of the total offering of primary shares, 1,217,391,305 common shares would be sold to international investors while the remaining 521,739,130 common shares would be allotted to domestic buyers.
The planned IPO has already been approved by the Philippine Stock Exchange and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Based on the initial terms submitted by the company, the shares will be offered at a maximum P6 per share. At this offer price, Aboitiz Power is looking at raising P10.2 billion worth of proceeds.
Aboitiz Power said the proceeds will be used to fund the upgrade of existing power generation and distribution facilities, as well as investments in capacity expansion and development of greenfield projects.
The company is a wholly owned unit of the Cebu-based conglomerate Aboitiz Equity Ventures, a publicly traded firm with interest in the banking, shipping, power distribution and generation and food businesses.
Last January, directors of Aboitiz Power approved an increase in the company’s authorized capital stock from P5 billion to P17 billion.
Also approved was the issuance to Aboitiz Equity, out of the increase in capital stock, Aboitiz Power common shares in exchange for the shares of stock held by Aboitiz Equity in the following corporations: Davao Light & Power Co. Inc., Visayan Electric Co. Inc., Hijos de F. Escaòo Inc., Cotabato Light & Power Co., Subic Enerzone Corp., San Fernando Electric Light and Power Co. Inc., Pampanga Energy Ventures Inc. and Aboitiz Energy Solutions Inc.
Aboitiz Equity manages the power distribution utilities of the group, while Aboitiz Power handles all power generation assets. Part of Aboitiz Power’s IPO procedure is to consolidate the distribution and generation assets of the group under Aboitiz Power’s wing.

My allerologist banned a lot of good things in my life including cheese. Banning cheese translates to not eating pizza, pasta, etc...That would be the end of me. FIN-as what those telenovelas say. The reason why we're here tonight was because of the Cheese Fondue, an idea introduced by Ms. T.
http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/589/img0375dw1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
This was my first time to have Cheese Fondue. It was a love-hate sensation as my sister would describe it. I naturally love cheese but for the first time in my life, I have yet to decide if I did like the taste of Cheese Fondue or not.
I asked the waiter, Alex what cheese was used and he said Gruyere and Appenzeller. The taste was a fairly bland buttery and nutty taste with a sharp bite.
We had fun sharing the seafood chowder and afterwards snacking on the bread bowl. Next time, I'll be recommending a place that serves a spectacular seafood chowder.
http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/2765/img0378go8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
For the main course, my Hungarian Sausage was perfect because of its spicy flavor. Ms. T didn't like her Cordon Bleu. My sister liked her Swiss steak but was bit salty. We didn't order it but if you're really hungry, order the mixed grill-it's great but a bit heavy.

We decided to stay for dessert and while waiting, they gave us something new to try. It was funny since the waitress didn't know what it was. She didn't even get our feedback. Anyway, it looked like jelly roll and the filling tasted like prune jam. Whatever it was, we didn't like it that much.

Dessert was cheap ranging from P65-P85. But honestly, it wasn't that good. If I were to rate it from the yummiest to the not so yummy-tiramisu, Black Forest cake, and Mango Fruit Torte.
http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/6898/img0393vg1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
I was so happy to have my San Pelligrino Limonata. Its a sparkling lemon beverage and I get to drink it only at Picobello and Swiss Deli. I think Gaisano South sells this too. Don't forget to ask for extra ice!

Swiss Deli serves apetizers, starters, wines, desserts, and they have a small deli selling all sorts of imported cheese, ham, bottled and canned goods, etc. If you like cooking European dishes, you'll find some of your hard to find ingredients here.
Our total bill amounted to P2,215.00. A bit steep due to the Cheese Fondue at P750...maybe that's the reason why the doctor banned me from eating cheese! Dr. Mangaoil I can hear you clearly now. Hihi!

MtApoStandard July 25th, 2007, 01:15 PM DAR employees oppose Davao transfer

Animation school to be set up here
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
A TOP official of a Manila-based company Wednesday said they are looking for an area in Davao City where they can establish an animation school in two months time.
Rhizaldy Reblora, president of the Another Level Consultancy Inc., said the animation school will be known as the Creative Vision Development Center, which will be set up in support for the animation studio that will also be established in the city in the first quarter of 2008.
We are going international this time because the MICT Congress will be held back to back with the BIMP-Eaga ICT Conference," Fournier said.
Both events are slated on October 23 and 24 at the Exhibition Center of the NCCC Mall.
Fournier revealed the difference in this year's MICT congress is the holding of talks and plenary sessions seen to be relevant not only to the ICT sector, but also to other sectors which have immediate concern on the ICT industry.
"We will be having a lot of talks, one of these will be a talk from an intellectual property lawyer for software development," Fournier said, adding that a software, called the open-source disaster management, will also be introduced to attract local government units (LGUs).
He said the disaster management software is already accepted worldwide and has been used by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). The software enables a person to know various measures and strategies to manage and overcome disasters.
The 6th MICT congress promises to elevate ICT in a different level with the collaboration of the Eaga-member countries.
The congress will also feature special events like the ICT trade exhibit, business matching forums, a Mindanao Bloggers summit, Peso business plan competition, digital photography exhibition, and an online gaming competition.
One of its objectives is to support the development momentum of the ICT industry which continues to be a mechanism of growth in the country.
Fournier said there is no doubt now that Davao City is considered as the ICT hub in Mindanao with the staging of the two events in the city.
"I was in Manila recently and I had talks with people there, those people are actually looking for an alternative ICT hub, they cited Cagayan de Oro and I wondered bakit hindi nila nabanggit ang Davao. They told me that Davao is considered developed in terms of ICT, hindi na tayo developmental, we are matured in business process outsourcing (BPO) organization," Fournier shared.
This year's host of the 6th MICT is the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII), in coordination with the Mindanao Business Council, and the ICT Davao Inc.

Duterte getting impatient about Bankerohan bridge
DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte wants the Generoso Bridge I in Bankerohan up and just curing by December, this year, or else.
What the "else" means, however, was not so clear except that the public works and highways officials from Manila cannot spend their Christmas in Davao.
I've seen a lot of officials from Manila visiting the bridge, sige lang sila tan-aw sa tubig," Duterte said as he parodied the fact that while Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) officials have been inspecting the space where the bridge used to be, there is no sign yet that bridge construction will start soon.
"One of these days I will kick their asses, push them down the river," he said in last Tuesday night's live television program of Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy.
The DPWH earlier announced that the 50-year-old bridge that collapsed earlier this year was to be replaced by a steel bridge. But this was upgraded to a concrete bridge upon the behest of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Having a concrete bridge, however, will mean that the planned December 2007 completion cannot be met as there has to be at least three months curing time for the concrete.
With July almost over, however, not one column has been set up.
"If the bridge is not there by Christmas, then... don't celebrate Christmas in this city," Duterte said, not elaborating any further. (SAE)

Spies sniffed out kidnap suspects
By Stella A. Estremera
SPIES in the person of ordinary citizens, who are paid to monitor activities of persons that the City Government finds suspicious, helped a lot in the rescue of a kidnapped businessman, the killing of four of his kidnappers including a sacked army sergeant and a policeman, and the arrest of six other suspected accomplices less than a week after the kidnapping.
Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte said this in last Tuesday night's live Give Us This Day TV program of Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy.
"For the longest time I've been saying, even if you burp somewhere else in the city, I will know. If you fart, I can smell and I will know," he said.
This is so, said Duterte, because he has people under his “employ” funded by his multi-million peso peace and order fund.
"I have so many trip wires, human trip wires, spies, paid information, agents," the mayor said as he attributed in part the fast rescue of kidnapped gasoline station owner Edgar Barroso to these spies.
He said his trip wires are so effective, if a person's activities are cast in suspicion then he can easily monitor every movement the person makes.
"Kung anong oras ka nag-check in sa motel, kung kelan kayo nag-away ng misis mo dahil nahuli ka," he quipped. "I can give you a rundown of your activities if I am interested in you."
It was fairly easy for the suspects in Barroso's kidnap to fall, he said, because they left huge leads, among which was hanging out with Sergeant Jesse Muit, an army sergeant sacked for involvement in the kidnap for ransom of a Filipino-Chinese hardware owner Winston Lim-Ho in 2000.
Muit was acquitted of the kidnapping charges for that case in 2000 because the kidnap victim and his family opted not to push through the case. The reason, the mayor said, was that Muit's accomplices were threatening to get back at the family at the time that Muit was still behind bars.
The mayor and his men, however, kept an eye on Muit and knew something was in the offing when two policemen, identified as PO2 Jaime Telebangco, who was one of those slain in Barroso's rescue at Spring Valley Subdivision in Buhangin, and arrested kidnap suspect PO2 Kit Michael Froilan Sanz started meeting with him.
"Itong mga ugok na pulis, nagsama-sama na dito sa ex-army, they started drinking together," Duterte said, adding that one of the human trip wires reported the goings-on and a close monitoring of the group's activities ensued.
Barroso was taken by force from his gas station office in Panacan on July 8 and was rescued from a house in Spring Valley two days later.
In this rescue from inside a low-cost housing unit, four suspects were slain, including Muit and Telebangco.
Two days after the rescue, the six other kidnap suspects including Sanz were presented to the mayor.
"He must thank the Lord that he is still alive," Duterte said of Sanz, "It always ends with people dead."
The other suspects were Wendel Asentista, son of retired Police Superintendent Ildefonso Asentista, Sanz's uncle Angelito Froilan, a taxi driver, Marvin Booc, Nilo Benemito, and Petronilio Ali.
Meanwhile, Duterte scoffed off the claims of Asentista, Sanz, and Froilan that their arrests were illegal.
The three filed separate motions in court asking to be released pending completion of the preliminary investigation because they were arrested without warrants.

Nograles heads House reps to powerful CA
By Ben O. Tesiorna
AFTER holding the post of a House majority leader in the 13th Congress, Davao City Representative Prospero Nograles has been chosen by his colleagues to head the Lower House's contingent to the powerful and controversial Commission on Appointments (CA).
Nograles was elected unanimously on the floor during Tuesday's session, replacing the post vacated by his namesake former Surigao Representative Prospero Pichay who lost in the senatorial race in the last election.
In a text message, Nograles said his latest position "is less stressful and not too much in the limelight."
"Good for someone like me who is in the last term," he said.
CA is composed of 12 congressmen and 12 senators who are mandated to approve or deny all presidential appointments and promotions of senior police and military officials.
The CA was recently thrown into a controversy when one congressman squealed that members of the CA are asking favors and money in exchange for the approval of the appointment of some Cabinet officials.
House Speaker Jose de Venecia and Pichay however denied the accusation.
Asked what measures he would take to improve the image of the CA, Nograles said they will have to study first what move to make.
He said first things first -- eleven other members of the CA contingent from the Lower House will have to be elected.
"There are at least 63 congressmen who signified their intention to be in the CA. Hard to choose who," said Nograles.
He said after all of the election of the 24 members, from both the House and the Senate, they will then meet and map out parameters of their functions.
"We intend to confirm or reject those who seek confirmation at the earliest possible time with utmost public transparency and pass upon their qualifications and their competence with clear objectivity. We will work closely with our Senate counterpart for a fresh start in the CA. yes we really intend to work very hard to attain these objectives," Nograles said.
Replacing Nograles as the House majority leader is Iloilo Representative Arthur Defensor. (BOT)

Full traffic light system won't operate till 2008
By Grace L. Plata
THE synchronized traffic signalization system would not be fully implemented until March next year, said Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte Tuesday.
Duterte said the comprehensive traffic scheme will not be implemented as planned not until the Gov. Generoso Bridge I is rebuilt.
The synchronized traffic signalization system is one of the mayor's priority projects during his last term.
Its implementation, however, it not yet complete due to factors like that of the collapse of Gov. Generoso Bridge 1, which is the main route of southbound vehicles.
As it is synchronized, one missing piece in the whole system, will affect the whole system.
Duterte, however, said the installation of more traffic lights will go on which will reach as far as the Davao Medical Center junction in Bajada so that all 39 posts with traffic lights will be completed by the time the bridge is rebuilt.
On the other hand, Duterte says Traffic Management Center Chief Celso Gempesaw will stay in his post and will not be appointed as City Engineer as some talks go.
"He is doing a great job in TMC (Traffic Management Center) that is why I want him to stay there," Duterte said.
Duterte added that if Gempesaw is taken from his current post, the traffic group's effectivity and competence may suffer.

DOH: DMC as corporate enterprise to benefit poor
By Carlo P. Mallo
DEPARTMENT of Health (DOH)-Southern Mindanao Director Paulyn Jean Rosell-Ubial assured the public that the plan of Davao Medical Center (DMC) to be run as a corporate venture will not ease out its indigent patients. In fact, this will be more beneficial.
DMC has been reported to be gearing into turning itself into a self-sustaining medical facility that would cater to both indigent and paying clients.
Ubial believes that the move will be good for the medical facility, the best so far in Mindanao.
"It doesn't mean that the hospital would only cater to the paying patients, by turning corporate, DMC would be able to be self-sustaining by receiving payments from those clients who are not indigent," Ubial said.
She further elaborated that the hospital, unlike most public hospitals, will no longer solely depend on the funding being provided by the National Government.
"We must not take it in a negative manner," Ubial added, "It is not a private corporation wherein the profits would go to the pockets of the board of directors and other officials."
Rather, she said, the profit will be used to sustain the services that the hospital has for its indigent patients.
With this set-up, Ubial asserted that more indigent patients will benefit because apart form the funds coming from the national budget, DMC can also generate its own funds from its paying clientele.

Survey: Bikers are braving city's main streets
By Grace L. Plata
THERE are two to three bikers passing through the city's main streets in a single minute, says a survey result of bicycle load count in eight areas in the city. The study was cited by Councilor Leonardo Avila III in support of the proposed bike lanes ordinance.
The survey, prepared by the Support Services and Coordinative Section of the City Administrator's office, was made in the areas of Quezon-Boulevard-Roxas Avenue, Magsaysay Avenue, Agdao Flyocer-Leon Garcia Streets, Quimpo Boulevard-Bolton Bridge, R. Castillo-Sasa, Lanang Junction, Mc Arthur Highway Junction and Quimpo Boulevard Junction.
Avila said these statistics will strongly prove the need to establish bike lanes in the city's main thoroughfares to protect the bikers.
The ordinance establishing bike lanes passed first reading during the City Council's regular session Tuesday and was referred to the committee on energy, transportation, and communication chaired by Councilor Pilar Braga.
The proposal to establish bike lanes, however, is not a new move as Mayor Rodrigo Duterte already issued Executive Order 21 back in 2005, creating the technical working group (TWG) that will tackle and draft the bicycle lane ordinance. The survey cited by Avila is part of the output of the TWG.
The ordinance will provide for the establishment of lanes in highways and signage in small roads would be an integral part of the Traffic Management System.
This is patterned after the initiative of the Metro Manila Development Authority, which in efforts to minimize traffic congestion and pollution has encouraged the use of bikes.
Bikes, unlike motor vehicles, do not emit harmful substances in the air.
The move, Avila said, is supported by the Federation of Off-Road Cycling Enthusiasts (Force) and other cycling groups.

By Joy Romares-Sevilla
THE 6th Mindanao Information and Communications Technology (MICT) Congress was officially launched Wednesday back-to-back with the first BIMP-Eaga ICT Conference, at the Grand Men Seng Hotel.
Andrei Joseph Fournier, MICT 2007 spokesman, said during the Club 888 press forum Wednesday that this is the first time Davao City will hold an ICT conference that will be participated not only by stakeholders from Mindanao, but also from Manila, USA, Japan, and Korea.
"We are going international this time because the MICT Congress will be held back to back with the BIMP-Eaga ICT Conference," Fournier said.

Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day) is the celebration of the Surrender of Japan, which was initially announced on August 15, 1945 (August 14 U.S. date), ending combat in the Second World War.

Throughout Mindanao, pockets of Japanese troops, safeguarded by the impenetrable terrain of the island's unexplored jungle expanses, survived until the end of the war, when some 22,000 emerged to surrender.

"Lieutenant Wada was apparently a highly-rated intelligence officer with the Japanese 100th Division, a crack unit activated in Mindanao early in 1944. Their mission was to stop the U.S. advance at all costs," according to William Flynn, now a university professor and formerly a Marine intelligence officer who served in the Pacific Theater.
Flynn continued: "Our people went right after the 100th, hitting it hard with artillery and air strikes, before they could get organized and into the ballgame.
"But we needed a knockout punch. We needed to locate their headquarters - their glass jaw, so to speak. That's where Minoru Wada came in like a gift from Heaven."
Wada was an idealistic young man. He was a sharp intelligence officer with the 100th Division.
Flynn interviewed Wada after he became a prisoner of war at the time and found that the Japanese officer was discouraged with the direction of the war.
"Several times, he told us he had never been convinced his country should have started the global conflict they did. He was sick about the prison camp situations both In Germany and in those countries controlled by his people.
"He told us he would do anything, even sacrifice his own life, to stop the war and bring ultimate peace to the people on the Japanese home islands."
According to Flynn, Wada said: "The generals and admirals, the old, tough military, forced this war on the people. The common Japanese person does not want war. What can I do to end it?"
"At first he was horrified at the idea of killing his own people. Then, he began to see the value of killing a few persons to save the lives of so many thousands of innocent soldiers - Japanese and American."

davaoeagle July 26th, 2007, 02:54 AM Security Bank upgrades Davao branches
By Ted P. Torres
Thursday, July 26, 2007
DAVAO CITY — The Security Banking Corp. is upgrading its branches in Davao for the added convenience of its growing clientele in the area.
William C. Whang, Security Bank senior vice president and branch banking group head said the refurbishing and refitting program will be completed within the next quarter.
“We will also establish centers called S-class sections in three of the four branches in Davao to cater to the investing or more mature banking clients,” Whang said.
The S-class sections are for clients that want to go beyond the traditional deposit activities, which include trust and personal banking activities.
In Davao, three of the four branches will have a S-class section: Davao City proper, Monteverde and Rizal.
In the bank’s branch network in the Metro Manila, the branches in Alabang, two in Makati, Tektite in Ortigas, Binondo and Greenhills have S-class sections.
“There is a marked growth in the maturity of the banking public. They now realize that there are more investment opportunity beyond the traditional savings and time deposits, and that includes trust products and other investments in securities,” the Security Bank official said.
Five new Security Bank are set to open branches in Laoag, Urdaneta in Pangasinan, Cagayan de Oro, and two in the Visayas, including Cebu City.
Security Bank has 16 branches in the Visayas and Mindanao area out of the total 114 nationwide.
The bank has been aggressive in the consumer and the small and medium enterprises (SME) in the past two years with the Mindanao region getting the lion’s share of attention.
In fact, the medium-sized bank is optimistic of achieving a 20-percent growth in lending this year due to the targeted P14 billion worth of transactions with its over 100 corporate and SME clients using its cash management electronic facility.
In 2006, the cash management electronic facility, also known as eCollect, recorded P6 billion in volume of transactions which include loans, deposits, checking accounts and bills payments.
In the first quarter of this year, it averaged P1 billion worth of transactions.
In the same period, Security Bank recorded a 40-percent growth in net earnings to P757.6 million from P540 million a year ago.
davaoeagle July 26th, 2007, 02:59 AM Region 11 board tackling wage hike petition
By Edith Regalado
Thursday, July 26, 2007
DAVAO CITY – The Southern Mindanao wage board is now tackling a petition seeking a P75 across-the-board wage increase for more than 1.6 million workers in the region.
The board is expected to issue its resolution on the petition by Aug. 19. It conducted the last of its sectoral consultations across the region last July 19.
At present, the region’s non-agricultural workers get a daily minimum wage of P224 with P16 cost-of-living allowance (COLA).
Agricultural (plantation) workers, on the other hand, receive P214 per day, and non-plantation workers, P193 plus P16 COLA.
Southern Mindanao is largely an agriculture-based economy, where a significant number of workers are employed in banana plantations sub-contracted by multinational firms like Dole and Del Monte.
Labor officials said several employers are still unable to pay the present wage levels as mandated in the last wage order issued in July last year.

6th MICT, BIMP-Eaga ICT gab launched here
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
The 6th MICT congress promises to elevate ICT in a different level with the collaboration of the Eaga-member countries.

tj_brewed July 26th, 2007, 04:46 AM ^^ In connection to this news....Davao is simply a leader in the industry as it once again changed the rules and brought ICT in Mindanao to the next level. To those who didnt know, the very first Mindanao ICT Congress was staged in Davao 6 years ago. Several cities became its host and now that Davao - its birthplace, will be home to the next confab - Davao has given a twist through bringing it to the International arena this time around. What can i say, Davao is determine to be competitive in the global arena and not in this island alone. We look beyond Mindanao! And that's what a true leader is...We look outside of the box!

The Spro Effect
Another day, another coffeeshop raided for photos. This time we went to Spro (which btw in this geek's opinion serves the best lattes in town) located @ Gen. Luna street.
The place was kinda quiet, which gave me all the freedom in the world to walk around and shoot whatever I wanted, but I ended up with another close-up of my cup with some pretty centered focus with an artistically out of focus background.

In August, VMB-611 participated in one of the most unusual and bizarre missions of the Pacific War. On August 10, captured Japanese Army 2nd Lt. Minoru Wada voluntarily guided VMB-611 PBJs and VMF-115 F4U Corsairs to the headquarters of General Harada’s 100th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army, located in the mountains near Kibawe-Talomo Trail in Mindanao’s Davao area. While 2nd Lt. Wada watched from his PBJ waist-gun position, the pilots pounded the headquarters and billet area with fragmentation bombs, napalm, rockets, and heavy machine gun fire, devastating the area.
Of course, a few days later the war ended source
Quote:
Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day) is the celebration of the Surrender of Japan, which was initially announced on August 15, 1945 (August 14 U.S. date), ending combat in the Second World War.
Quote:
Throughout Mindanao, pockets of Japanese troops, safeguarded by the impenetrable terrain of the island's unexplored jungle expanses, survived until the end of the war, when some 22,000 emerged to surrender.
Quote:
Then, he began to see the value of killing a few persons to save the lives of so many thousands of innocent soldiers - Japanese and American."
good read thanks!

Chicken Tsunami
After a game of badminton(ok I admit-I like it now), one of my playmates(does that make me a playgirl?!),Atty. E, said that he was intrigued by the number of diners at Chicken Tsunami.
We headed to Bonifacio St., and there I realized that it was located at the old Fernandez Piano School. I studied piano there for almost 10 years! At this very ground, my young heart pounded everytime it was my turn for a recital. Long before Alicia Keys enthralled us, I was staging concerts at Bonifacio St. BWAHAHAHA!
Just as what Atty. E said, the place was indeed packed with people. Some were even standing outside, waiting to be seated. Its a simple and small place with just a few tables. You can see everything while you order-the ref, 2 deep fryers, and rice cooker.
http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/8577/dsc00106ud3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Before anything else, this is not the Molave greaseless formula. This is the Pritong Manok kind. I asked one of my playmates, Ms. H, and she told me that it was Pritong Manok meets Colasa's because of the banana leaf lining our plates. It was good. It gets even better when you get the bill at P25 per order(1 cup rice and a slice of chicken). My playmate Mr. M, ordered Fried Lumpia at P10 for 3 pieces-not a fan of fried lumpia-it's a long traumatic story.

I'm still wondering why the called the place Chicken Tsunami. Maybe it refers to the wave of people coming in to eat their delicious no-fuss fried chicken.
Who says you can't get more for paying less?

Parking meter
From the mail:
"Dear Hon. Peter Lavina,
I noticed the traffic congestions in the City of Davao, and know that there are things that could be done on this and perhaps it has laready been done before, but not properly implemented.
Might I suggest for one that maybe the Council could introduce an ordinance to have parking meters on all major streets, thus eliminating permanent parking on major streets, and reduced traffic congestions while it bring in extra income to the city. I don't know if it was tried before, but this is just my observation, who knows it might discourage private car owners to leave their cars at home and instead ride in carpool or the public transportation, as it might even reduced our air pollution.
A thought.
Thanks,

Boyd's Pizza House-The Garlic Bread House
I had time to kill yesterday since my meeting was moved to 3:30. It gave me the chance to fit my dress for the upcoming wedding of my good friend Mr. T. The green dress was quite fashion-forward and I looked like a Sirenang Suman in it! Haha! On my way back to the meeting, I saw Boyd's Pizza House and instructed R to turn around...
http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/292/dsc00052copydf5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Upon entering I was greeted by the smell of garlic. Ahhh I love garlic!!! Garlic excites me!
The staff looked surprised when I entered-as if they've seen a ghost at 3 in the afternoon. They just opened last Monday and maybe they were still adjusting to customers. I asked for the menu and the waiter led me to the menu printed on a tarpaulin hanging on the wall. They serve starters, salads, pizza, pasta, and sandwiches.
I didn't have much time to meticulously go over the menu so I just ordered the first one on the list which was Pepperoni and Cheese at P 109 (small size, 6 slices). The Bottomless Lemonade was I think P28.00. They also had paper placemats with puzzles and games to keep you busy while you wait, but to keep myself busy, I was sniffing all the bread on display and ended up buying one.
http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/5460/mypicturesug8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The pizza didn't go straight to our table but rested for about a minute on the counter. Pleeeeeeease serve it while its hot! I was signaling to the waiter to serve it now but he was looking at the other direction. The hot sauce on our table was missing its cap-not good for sanitary purposes. There was also no knife for me to use-I know its alright to pick up a slice of pizza but I prefer a fork and knife to keep my hands free from any smell.
http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/4458/dsc00049as7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
In fairness, it truly was WHOLE WHEAT like the flyer claims. It was affordable at P109 considering that it was Whole Wheat. Also, the loaf bread I took home had REAL MINCED GARLIC in it.

Greaseless Chronicles Part II: Yellow Fin Seafoods & Restaurant
This is Part II of the Greaseless Chronicles...my personal search for the best greaseless chicken in town. Yes I know, this is going to wreak havoc to my weight. Hahaha!
It looked empty on the outside but I have to say that I was surprised to find the place was almost full. At Yellow Fin Seafoods & Restaurant, you can either choose from the cooked dishes or you can have your choice of seafood (tuna bagaybay, tuna belly, tuna ubol-ubol, pompano, clams, hito, prawns, etc) and have it freshly grilled, fried, etc.
http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/6015/dsc00055wm3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
My brother once ate there and the next table was occupied by foreigners. The foreigners asked what the house specialty was and the waiter said-Greaseless Chicken. The foreigner was surprised that a restaurant named Yellow Fin would have chicken as its specialty.
http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/2255/dsc00057rn6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The tarpaulin outside exhibits a very photogenic greaseless chicken! The newspaper clippings on the wall (near the sink) tells you that they will be serving you with the famed Molave-style greaseless Chicken! I can't wait!
I was also craving for their Adobong Tuna Buntot which is delicious but the last 2 orders were already reserved! I can see them on the counter calling my name!!! Huhu!
We ordered for Sizzling Ubol-ubol(Tuna Esophagus) instead which I later regreted. It would have been better and less fatty if we had it grilled and dipped in the classic soy sauce-vinegar-lemon-chili dip.
http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/1508/dsc00054pu0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
My sister also ordered Kilawin to keep us busy while we wait for 25 minutes for the chicken to be cooked. I once read that for every minute, approximately 300 babies are born worldwide. So it was amazing that I still had to wait for 7,500 births before I could have my chicken! 7,495...7,496...7,497...7,498...7,499...7,500! Yay!
http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/5629/dsc00061ut2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The chicken was served with the usual tomato, cucumber, and coleslaw. It was a bit bland and didn't resemble the Molave taste. The gravy was full of lumps and a bit salty too.I also ordered mashed potato but it was dry and was obviously the instant type. It wasn't good. No wonder the table next to ours didn't finish theirs. Even my sister commented that it wasn't good.
I was with my sister and the driver A and we paid P661 including drinks.
Maybe the waiter was wrong and the greaseless chicken wasn't really their specialty but something else on the menu like yellow fin and seafood as the restaurant name suggests.

We had to trail down a mountain cliff to get to the beach. On the way back, I almost collapsed, but that's ok because the place is wonderful, and I've fallen in love with this Handsome Paradise. As you could see, all the pictures were taken on the shore because the moment I got into the water, I completely indulged myself in snorkelling (ouch, my back was sunburnt) and forgot about taking a view from the water.

davaoeagle July 26th, 2007, 07:22 PM Ateneo de Manila awards Dabawenyo doc
Written by MindaNews

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/25 July) – The Ateneo de Manila University’s Board of Trustees today awarded Davao City’s Dr. Jose Manigque Tiongco the Ozanam Award in recognition of his “advocacy for cooperative health systems in addressing the delivery of health services for the poor.”
“The patriotic and radical approach of your cooperative health system is anchored on the justice of giving the poor the ‘Health and Humanity they deserve.’ This war against poverty focuses on the health expenditure of the poor and provides a solution on how medical economics can benefit the majority of our population, including other stakeholders such as nurses, medical staff and even doctors serving in remote areas,” Fr. Bienvenido Nebres, president of the Ateneo de Manila University, said.
Tiongco, a surgeon, is a co-founder of the country’s first cooperative hospital and cooperative health fund (CHF). He took up his pre-Medicine at the Ateneo de Manila, and graduated from the University of the Philippines’ College of Medicine Class 1971.
The first co-op hospital and CHF was inaugurated in Davao City in November 1991. It has since spread across the country into what is now the MMGHHSCP or the Medical Mission Group Hospitals and Health Services Cooperative-Philippines (MMGHHSCP) where Tiongco serves as Chief Executive Officer.

DA backs establishment of Food Exchange Terminal complex

Davao City (27 July) -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) has voiced its support for the review and resolution of the proposed Davao Food Exchange and Terminal Complex to be established in Daliao, Toril, which is about 18 kilometers away from the Davao poblacion area.
The Daliao Toril area is also the location of the Davao Fish Port Complex (DFPC) where the sashimi grade tuna fish along the Southwestern Pacific are offloaded for shipment to the auction market.
The fish port is advantageous because of several flights that transported the fish fresh to various market outlets and for direct transshipment to Japan, United States and other European markets.
According to the Philippine Fisheries Management Development Authority and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) XI Director George Campeon, there are about 200 accredited foreign fishing vessels (in 2006) from Taiwan and other foreign countries.
In a report from the Daliao fishing port complex, the daily offloading of tuna on the average is 13.5 tons and the income last year was pegged at about P35-million. Income in 2005 was at P25-million.
If the proposed Food Terminal complex will be realized, Director Campeon said this will boost economic activity in the area.
Meanwhile, DA USEC Jesus Emmanuel Paras, who was in Davao recently for the 7th Davao City Business Conference initiated by Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. president Atty. Doming Duerme, said the proposed Food Terminal complex will be an agricultural economic processing zone.
This is in line with President Arroyo's priority programs to embark higher public spending on the establishment of more post harvest and storage facilities, provision of accessible and affordable rural credit and insurance and linking producers directly with domestic and global markets including repair and rehabilitation of irrigation systems, continuous conduct of research and development, technology and extension services.
USEC Paras said about 445 units of post harvest facilities and storage will also be set up in Mindanao (PIA XI) [top]

I see lots of humongous structures here such as Gaisano Mall of Davao and the equally massive parking building, 9 storey Regency Hotel, Plaza de Luiza, Landco Corporate Centre, San Pedro College and the hospital complex, Holy Cross College of Davao with its new, spanking gymnasium. Awesome montage indeed.
Add on:
I also see the new modern gymnasium of Davao Christian High School (One of the three chinese schools in Davao-the other 2 being Stella Maris Academy and Davao Central High School) sandwiched between ADDU Finster Building and Landco Tower.

Clean waters are indeed a blessing for Davao - but that did not come in handy, lot's of toils done to keep it as such. In this regard, ISs should be relocated the soonest..

Their downtown core is so dense and teeming with business activity.
Rajah_Soliman July 26th, 2007, 10:34 PM ^^ i can imagine that... well, proximity wise, they are much nearer to malaysia, to indonesia and (would you believe) manila (overnight lang by barko)..that could be the reason for their trade boom...
btw, remember sulpicios MV Manila leaving Dvo's Sta. Ana Pier Saturday nights for Manila via Zambo..

I know that's why they are the second city in the island, the only one after Davao to have international flights because of location.
I haven't tried taking the ship to Manila but I did from Davao to Cebu with stopovers in CDO and Surigao City. The view is one for the books when you are on Davao Oriental waters and when you're lucky you'll see dolphins gallivanting around the vessel.
Rajah_Soliman July 26th, 2007, 10:48 PM ^^ the casandra and trans-asia cases made sea travel to and from northern mindanao scary ... not to mention that nasipit had a bad reputation for its contaminated drinking water... ewan ko lang ngayon... during my time, travel to cebu was very luxurious on board the william lines roro (may disco sa taas.. kaya lang pag dumadaan ng philippine deep kini-close nila dahil sa lakas ng alon.. ) i remember the ship used to dock at Davao's sasa pier.... tama ba?
davaoeagle July 26th, 2007, 10:51 PM ^^
Yes these passenger ships dock at Sasa Int'l Seaport which is now undergoing upgrade.
What I like about SIS is the grand entrance where you have to register your vehicle and pay entrance fees-very high tech - the only one I see in VisMin.
Rajah_Soliman July 26th, 2007, 11:07 PM ^^ the last time i passed by that area was in 1999 ... there were a lot of white sailors then (i presume they were russians or eastern europeans)... what really amazed me were those rows of night bars (may gay bar din.. ) along that area.... they look clean though, hindi pang informal sector ang dating... i hope they could develop the area as a mini Dau (Angeles)
davaoeagle July 26th, 2007, 11:20 PM ^^
I've been to one of those bars and restos you mentioned liniing up the entrance area. It was then called "Dusk Till Dawn" The place was so famous for native skewed chicken that we had to drive (with my colleagues) from downtown just to enjoy their food. Yes, lots and lots of "marineros" of different origins were loitering in the area on a hunt for some cold beer, and other pleasurable options and what not...
Rajah_Soliman July 26th, 2007, 11:26 PM ^^ for short the SIS is not a trying hard international port ... pls. don't put words into my mouth....
davaoeagle July 26th, 2007, 11:29 PM ^^
No way it is trying hard to be international for crying out loud (lol). It's every inch international by any standards. One thing that sets it apart in it's cleanliness. I go there once in a while to enjoy the breeze.

A thought.
Thanks,
http://www.funchain.com/post/0000005698
Hi Dinabaw!
Thanks for the warm welcome.
Ideally, putting up of parking meters could serve the purposes for which they are intended. However, I do not believe parking meters could discourage people from using private cars as intended, especially because our public transport system is still not that efficient (efficiency does not come in numbers). I, for one, could not count on jeepneys to bring me to my destination on time, unless I leave my place of origin at least two hours earlier.
Also, a closer observation of traffic activities will reveal that the greater contributor to congestion are actually the jeepney drivers themselves (no offense to jeepney drivers) by loading and unloading passengers in a no loading/unloading zone (worse, they sometimes do this right in the middle of the road), or by swerving in and out of traffic at will without regard to other vehicles. Therefore, to discourage people from using private cars by installing parking meters is really not the answer to reduce traffic congestion. Private cars are only a small proportion of total vehicle ownership.
Another issue to consider is the preparedness of Davao people to accept the concept of a parking meter. To a businessman, doctor, architect (waway, hehe), or lawyer (dextertexter), the reading in the meter could be way too negligible. To an ordinary white-collared employee, the reading in the meter could spell an additional but acceptable expense. To a person (at medyo marami sila ha) who finds fullfilment in vandalizing and destroying public property, the parking meter could be a very good (and expensive) toy. To a person who needs quick cash to satify a hungry stomach, the parking meter could be a sufficient piggy bank to break.
No offense to advocates of the parking meter, but I really believe that a strong discipline is what it takes to make the concept of a parking meter work. As of now, us Filipinos are still working on that discipline. Unless and until we achieve that discipline, a parking meter could be nothing more but a temporary adornment.
OPINION lang po ito ha???

10th Davao Horse Show reels off in toughest competition ever
The 10th Davao Horse Show and Competition, organized by trailblazing Davao Horse Club (DHC), reels off on Saturday, 9 a.m., at the Marina Park Stables in Matina Aplaya with a colorful Parade of Horses in the Opening Ceremonies.
Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William Butch Ramirez is the guest of honor and speaker.
Other invited guests include industrialist and world-renown Davao horse breeder Don Antonio Floirendo, Hermi Esguerra, another top Filipino horse breeder and racing enthusiast, City Council Committee Chair for the Environment Leo Avila III and Equestrian Association of the Philippines equestrian judge Steven Virata.
According to DHC President Francis Bong Ledesma, everything is set for the staging of the 10th version of the annual event which he said is made more meaningful as the Club celebrates its tenth year anniversary in 2007. And to commemorate this benchmark, he adds, this years competition features the first ever national equestrian qualifying event in Mindanao.
This means that the efforts of the Davao Horse Club in promoting horse sport all these years are being acknowledged by the Equestrian Association of the Philippines (EAP) which is the National Sport Association (NSA) for equestrian sport. Past president and project coordinator George Walter Misa informed further that the EAP, as a show of support, is sending over Steven Virata, former national equestrian team member and now an equestrian judge, to officiate in the initial equestrian event and give a lecture on the Olympic sport.
In addition to this, Misa said, the Philippine Olympic Committee has also acknowledged the role of the Davao Horse Club in developing the sport in this part of the country by making the Davao event the official venue for the equestrian sport in the Philippine Sports Festival being held in Mindanao.
For the first time too, the top three winners in the equestrian competition here will then have a crack in the national championships in Manila come November.
In gymkhana or Western games on horseback, the traditional events in the Davao horse show, competition is keener than ever. A never-before seen obstacle course being laid out at Marina Park Stables, this years venue, awaits horsemen from as far as Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Digos, Malaybalay and Impasugong of Bukidnon, the acknowledged cowboy country of the Philippines. Davaos Andy Tan, former Horseman of the Year titleist, reported that every year, competition gets so tough that time differences between riders are split seconds. And this year, he says, the obstacle course will be a real test for the accomplished horseman.
The Obstacle Race as well as the Barrell Race are the mainstays in the gymkhana events and are categorized into six, namely: youth, ladies, auxiliary, executive, novice and expert. Top three winners of each will receive trophies and cash prizes. According to Tan, not only have riders become more skilled in the past ten years. Horses, too he says, have been upgraded and are running so much faster. These would now include Arabians, Thoroughbreds, Quarter horses and Aglo-Arabs, a far cry from when we started. Though participants in the competition are members of horse clubs belonging to the Philippine Horsemens Federation (PHF), any non-member with a horse who wants to register will be accepted on the condition that the horse has gone thru a Coggins Test, the all-important test that determines whether a horse is free from contagious diseases, Tan further said. Davao is part of the PHFs annual horse competition circuit that starts in Cebu, then on to Malaybalay, Davao, Cagayan de Oro and Impasugong.
In presenting the 10th Davao Horse Show & Competition, the Davao Horse Club has partnered with the Philippine Sports Commission, City Government of Davao, Marco Polo Hotels, Empire Joy Stud Farm, Herma Farms & Stud, PAGCOR, DOT, Orient Glass & Aluminum and many more horse-loving individuals and institutions. From all indications, it will be a great weekend show, a memorable experience for children and adults alike. Admission is free to the public.(pr)

davaoeagle July 27th, 2007, 09:15 AM Security Bank maps out expansion in Mindanao
Inquirer
Last updated 08:26am (Mla time) 07/26/2007
DAVAO CITY, Philippines -- The board of Security Bank Corp. held here Tuesday its first meeting outside Metro Manila, which bank president and chief executive Alberto Villarosa said showed bullishness on Mindanao.
Ralp Cadiz, vice president for the consumer lending division, told reporters that the bank planned to expand in such key cities as Davao, General Santos, Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga.
Security Bank at present has eight branches in Mindanao, including four in Davao City.
Cadiz said the bank saw bright prospects in consumer lending, housing loans and automotive loans in Mindanao.
“Of the P72 billion in earnings from auto loans nationwide, a big chunk of it comes from Mindanao,” he said, citing the growing number of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) for contributing to the market.

tj_brewed July 27th, 2007, 11:58 AM Noiser, more vibrant and more dynamic than ever - The 6th Mindanao ICT Congress!
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/mict.jpg
The 6th Mindanao ICT Congress, which will be held on 23 & 24 October 2007, was formally launched in Davao City in simple ceremonies. This year’s host, the Davao City Chamber of Commerce & Industry, is teamed up with the city’s umbrella oranization of I.T. associations, ICT Davao Inc. If I’m not mistaken, this is the first time that the MICT is being spearheaded (at least in part) by the actual stakeholders of the I.T. industry.
The MICT Congress franchise is owned by the Mindanao Business Council (MBC), and it awards the privilege to host the event to a member Chamber each year. The Davao Chamber hosted the first 2 congresses, and once more this year.
What’s unique again in MICT’07 is the holding of the BIMP-Eaga ICT Conference for the very first time. The MBC, through the auspices of the Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco), was able to convince our opposite numbers in Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia to join forces with us this year to help us give deeper meaning to the MICT’s theme: “ICT Beyond Borders“.
The entities directly involved in the MICT are the following: MBC, the Davao Chamber, ICT Davao Inc, Medco, and the BIMP-Eaga Business Council. The Department of Trade & Industry - Region 11 and the city government of Davao are also lending their support towards a successful 6th MICT Congress.
After 5 years of conducting the MICT Congress, why is it that the people behind it are especially noisier this year? Monchito Ibrahim, of the Commission on ICT, answers this succinctly: Mindanao, aside from being the food basket of the nation, is now recognized as a viable source of skilled I.T. workers. However, there are serious challenges that are hampering the island economy from realizing its full potential. The conduct of the 6th MICT Congress is based upon addressing these challenges.
Increasingly we are faced with the specter of globalization. The playing field is at a much higher level now, and if we remain reluctant to forge ahead, we are in danger of losing out to more aggressive and single-minded competitors. One of which is China. This nominally Communist nation has apparently embraced capitalism, seemingly without much reservation. We see now that their sheer population size alone poses a threat to our ability to excel in the global arena. For example, some parts of China receive a hundredfold more I.T. outsourcing projects from Japan than we do.
Mindanao, led by Davao City and Cagayan de Oro City, stands a fighting chance. We do have highly-skilled and I.T. professionals, as well as a supply of trainable personnel. A good number of whom, unfortunately, are no longer within our borders. That’s one problem: brain drain. Another is this: How steady will this manpower supply be 5, 10 years hence? Is our educational infrastructure coping with the changing technologies? Are our schools adapting their curricula to meet the stringent requirements of I.T. companies?
This issue is involved, to say the least, but it is not yet moot. There will be no quick fixes for this industry-academe situation, but working towards the solution must be begun immediately. Fortunately, we have a working model upon which to build and improve: the MICT itself, and the synergies that have successfully sprung up only this year.

Childhood is all about getting sweaty, leaving parents grumbling about their children being "amoy araw," thus a performance under the sun is a breeze, even if they had to squint all throughout. Gorres out; Gabi to fight Guerrero
DIOSDADO "Prince" Gabi of Davao City has been picked to fight Gerson Guerrero in the boxing World Cup on August 11 at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California.
Golden Boy Promotions made this decision after Z Gorres, Guerrero's original opponent, was pulled out of the event after doctors discovered that Gorres had a tear in his retina following a medical check-up.
The 27-year-old Gabi was supposed to face Jose Angel Beranza in an eight-round encounter in the same card, but is now eyeing for a much bigger fight as his bout with Guerrero is a 10-round junior bantamweight eliminator.
Philboxing.com reported that it was Golden Boy Promotions that decided to scrap the Gabi-Beranza match-up and instead get Gabi to take on Guerrero.
Philboxing added that Gorres is scheduled to be checked by an eye specialist in Los Angeles, but both Golden Boy vice president Eric Gomez and international matchmaker Samson Lewkowicz have indicated Gorres will not be cleared to fight.
It was learned that the tear in the retina can be repaired but it would take some time before Gorres could be cleared to fight again.
Gabi, who once fought for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight title but lost to Vic Darchinyan by an eight-round knockout, earlier sparred with AJ Banal at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach as part of his preparations for his coming fight.
Gabi will be entering the ring with a 29-3-1 with 21 KOs, while Guerrero is toting record of 37-7 with 25 KOs. (CRAM)
