Fantabulous, Peng Hok. No one could have said it better than you just did!

Hi Dinabaw!

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Ideally, putting up of parking meters could serve the purposes for which they are intended. However, I do not believe parking meters could discourage people from using private cars as intended, especially because our public transport system is still not that efficient (efficiency does not come in numbers). I, for one, could not count on jeepneys to bring me to my destination on time, unless I leave my place of origin at least two hours earlier.

Also, a closer observation of traffic activities will reveal that the greater contributor to congestion are actually the jeepney drivers themselves (no offense to jeepney drivers) by loading and unloading passengers in a no loading/unloading zone (worse, they sometimes do this right in the middle of the road), or by swerving in and out of traffic at will without regard to other vehicles. Therefore, to discourage people from using private cars by installing parking meters is really not the answer to reduce traffic congestion. Private cars are only a small proportion of total vehicle ownership.

Another issue to consider is the preparedness of Davao people to accept the concept of a parking meter. To a businessman, doctor, architect (waway, hehe), or lawyer (dextertexter), the reading in the meter could be way too negligible. To an ordinary white-collared employee, the reading in the meter could spell an additional but acceptable expense. To a person (at medyo marami sila ha) who finds fullfilment in vandalizing and destroying public property, the parking meter could be a very good (and expensive) toy. To a person who needs quick cash to satify a hungry stomach, the parking meter could be a sufficient piggy bank to break.

No offense to advocates of the parking meter, but I really believe that a strong discipline is what it takes to make the concept of a parking meter work. As of now, us Filipinos are still working on that discipline. Unless and until we achieve that discipline, a parking meter could be nothing more but a temporary adornment.

OPINION lang po ito ha???

A member from chinatown?? LOL! Hehehehe.

Nice one Dex...by the way, asa diay agion ang Canibad? Puede ba moadto on a boat? Naa pud ba option to drive?

^^ Sir DavEagle, when we got into this adventure, nag bus mi gikan Sasa to Samal (via the Barge, of course) en route to Penaplata. From Penaplata, our friend contacted a multicab service, which took us to this hill right above Canibad beach. I guess you can drive, but the road was rough, and it's quite a long drive (mejo malayo), and it's not advisable to park your vehicle "upstairs" without a "bantay." If you do opt to drive, I would suggest a 4-wheel offroader.

I remember my Math 11 (Algebra) summer class in ADDU eons ago of course when the gizzards (including yours truly!) were merged with the wizzards (high school freshmen at that) both from AdDU and Phil. Sci. To think that was my second take of the course after getting "debarred" for my first one, the young guns breezed through the class with perfect scores all the time, while I could only muster a little higher than 80%. Inggit lang ako...

^^ yup... i had a couple of classmates who could do the same... when i had to take up higher mathematics courses here (only at the beginning), i noticed some difference of pedagogical approach... imo our math there is absorbed more on mere computation rather than analysis and result interpretation....here, there is a always a need to subject results to questioning.. i think our educators should look more on this aspect of teaching math if we want to have a discerning populace imo lang ...

^^ yeah... and you know what?... the approach lies on linguistics... davao folks' inborn abilities to learn and speak different dialects/languages make them potentially good "mathematicians" .... but the only obstacle (sorry for saying this) is our "lingering" catholic mentality, not to mention that the best schools there are still at the hands of religious congregations.

Ganoon ba? Pero as far as I can remember, you are free to express yourself in the campus as far as ADDU of course for as long as you are aware of the implications of your actions-responsibility is put with high premium.

I think the reason why there is slight failure in transcending from mere academics is the dearth of opportunities available in the national sphere. Science and technology sectors are really wanting in a lot of ways. Budger is hard to come by and so of the talents have to crane necks for opportunities outside.

@davaoeagle .... I agree, the ADDU Jesuits are liberal. Nonetheless they still have an inkling of conservatism (and still adhere to old Catholic beliefs). This is still reflected in their curriculum take for instance our Philosophy subjects which are all related to (and geared towards the teaching of ) God and His infaliability, etc. This type of religious conditioning is an obstacle to critical (and logical) thinking which a great majority of us have to (re)learn.

Philosophy yes, and sadly I didn't have the guts to debate with my teachers before though a lot of my peers did and they were as sharp. You're right philosophy dialectics in the classroom all lead to submission to the supreme being. Now you got me thinking...

"The existing branches of ONB in Mindanao are 65, with the five newly approved branches to be put up, this will elevate the number of our branches to 70," Murillo told Sun.Star.

The continued expansion keeps ONB as the widest private banking network in Mindanao.

In a statement, ONB President Alex Buenaventura said with ONB's core values at hand, the bank is proud to be the rural banking industry's biggest employer, with a workforce of 768 by year-end of 2006.

ONB was also declared number one in net worth in the rural banking industry for the year 2006 by the Philippine deposit Insurance Corporation (PDIC).

Murillo also said the total number of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) of ONB now reached to 60 units.

For foreign remittance business, ONB ATMs have tie-ups with MoneyGram, iRemit, UniTeller, BDO Remit, EPCIB-Xoom, PNB, DBP, RCBC Telemoney, and the AUG Gintong Hatid.

The bank ahs recently inaugurated its Sasa head office on Km. 9 in Sasa, Davao City.

The ONB head office has a bigger, attractive office space, and up-to-date facilities which include the PeraAgad Automated Teller Machine (ATM).

Murillo said the event was attended by Central Bank Governor Amando Tetangco Jr., Elma Tetangco, and Lucy Consunji who spearheaded the ribbon cutting ceremonies.

Distinguished guests both from private and government sectors as well as valued clients also came to witness the event, headed by the bank's chair Victor Consunji, president Alex Buenaventura, and vice chairman Antonio Avelino.

New budget airline launched in Subic (http://www.mb.com.ph/BSNS2007072898821.html)

By BERNIE CAHILES–MAGKILAT

Pacific Pearl Airways.Com Corp. (PPA), another low-cost airline, has launched its operations in Subic Freeport for a daily flight from South Korea to several tourist destinations in the country.

PPA will operate and manage chartered flights in both domestic and foreign routes. It has committed .12 million in investments in Subic. It has also entered into an agreement with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority to lease a hangar within the Subic Bay International Airport (SBIA).

"The company has prepared daily flight schedules from South Korea to several destinations in the Philippines namely Manila, Subic, Aklan, Cebu and Davao. Flights will commence in August this year," said Eligio Jimenez, PPA vice president for marketing.

Highlighting yesterday’s inauguration was the unveiling of two of the newest and most technologically advanced Boeing 737-200 aircrafts which flew in a week ago from Guam. Each of these aircrafts boasts of a highly convenient seating capacity of 114 passengers.

These flights are projected to bring Korean tourists to Kalibo without suffering through the hustle and bustle of connecting flights at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Earlier, PPA was reportedly looking at operating in the Mactan Cebu International Airport with regular flight from Korea to Subic and Kalibo.

SBMA administrator Armand C. Arreza noted that good things happen in threes.

Arreza noted that the president has returned for the third time in six weeks to Subic to lead today’s PPA inauguration.

The President recently visited the Freeport during the investiture rites of the 16.15-kilometer Subic Cawag-Balaybay road that now strategically connects the towns of Zambales to the billion-dollar Hanjin shipbuilding facility. Last week, she also attended the inauguration of the first phase completion of the 5-million Subic Bay Port Development Project.

Consistent with the mandate of being part of the Arroyo administration’s priority projects to augment economic prosperity in Central Luzon, the Subic Bay Freeport remains as the top record holder of having registered more than 60 percent of foreign direct investments (FDIs) in the Philippines.

East ASEAN ministers sign transport agreements
By Dennis Jay Santos
Mindanao Bureau
Last updated 05:11pm (Mla time) 07/27/2007

DAVAO CITY, Philippines -- Transport ministers from the four-country East ASEAN Growth Area (EAGA) signed agreements on sea, air and land traffic and security in a meeting here Thursday.

Transportation Secretary Leandro Mendoza said he and the other ministers pledged to find ways to improve security to protect the traveling public.

"We are going to offer a safer travel," Mendoza said, adding among matters threshed in the second EAGA transport ministers meeting were issues concerning air cargo and security.

Of the four EAGA countries, Indonesia and the Philippines have suffered much from terror attacks carried out by al-Qaeda-linked terror groups in the region.

Mendoza said the meeting with his counterparts -- Pehin Dato Abu Bakar Apong of Brunei, Jusman Syafii Djamal of Indonesia and and Dato Long See Wool of Malaysia -- resulted in significant developments in efforts to improve connectivity between the four countries.

"This meeting is substantial and beneficial to our country," Mendoza said.

He said they agreed to undertake the upgrading of strategic infrastructure facilities to accommodate an anticipated increase in passengers and cargo traffic in the sub-region.

Mendoza said they also called on airline companies to establish partnerships and alliances "to take advantage of the vast opportunities presented by the expanded implementation of the fifth freedom rights, as taken up during the 3rd BIMP-EAGA summit held last January 12 in Cebu."

During the Cebu summit, EAGA-member countries agreed to adopt an open skies policy. With a report from Judy Quiros, Inquirer Mindanao

DCWD - Regional Training Center.
LWUA's constant partner in human resources
development for 28 years

LWUA awards DCWD anew

The Local Water Utilities Administration once again cited Davao City Water District for its exemplary performance in the management of its training center, watershed program, finances and operations, collection efficiency among others during the LWUA- Water Districts Forum held last June 21, 2007at the Manila Hotel. LWUA named DCWD - Regional Training Center outstanding for the fifth time this year. The same four citations were given in 2006, 2005, and 2003 and in 1996. For 28 years now, the RTC remains to be a constant partner of LWUA in advancing its human resource development goals through its various capability building trainings, education seminars and other personnel training programs which aim to produce employees’ high performance level in customer service.

Aside from catering to water districts, the DCWD – RTC is largely known to be offering the following services to other agencies: rental of function rooms and lodging, development and implementation of trainings and seminars, provision of resource persons to water related seminars and projects, and on-the-job training programs for students and professionals.

For the second consecutive time, LWUA gave special award to DCWD for integrated watershed management development program for its vital role in the development, management and protection of watersheds through a sustained implementation of an integrated watershed program. The same award was given last year.

For more than a decade now, DCWD in its desire to ensure water resource sustainability , has developed and implemented a comprehensive community - based watershed management program in Mt. Talomo - Lipadas, Malagos and in Mt. Tipolog - Tamugan watersheds. DCWD has been actively rehabilitating 530 hectares in the three upland barangays of Mt.Talomo - Lipadas namely New Daliaon and Tungkalan, both in Toril District and Manuel Guianga in Tugbok District, and 235 hectares in Malagos that includes Brgy. Malagos, Brgy. Baguio Proper and Brgy. Wines in Baguio District. Also, DCWD extends its focus to Mt. Tipolog -Tamugan and intended to rehabilitate 316 hectares covering barangays Tambobong, Carmen and Tawan-Tawan all in Baguio District.

LWUA also gave DCWD a special award for creditworthy water supply providers for attaining the highest weighted score as to its financial and operational status, effectively exercising its built – in incentives to be self –reliant; special award for low operating ratio for operating the water system at minimal cost through efficient operation and frugal disbursement of funds; special award for high collection efficiency for having undertaken aggressive collection efforts and gaining the trusts and cooperation of its concessionaires; and special award for DOH – accredited water testing laboratories for having complied with the minimum requirements set by the Department of Health and possessing the capability to conduct the analytical method in the examination of water and waste water such as the physical and chemical analysis or bacteriological testing.

DCWD also received certificate of recognition from LWUA for being a nominee in the search for the Outstanding Water District for the year 2006.

This year’s awards were personally received by DCWD general manager Rodora N. Gamboa during said forum at the Manila Hotel. These recognitions are largely attributed to the talented and dynamic men and women of DCWD who are dedicated to develop and implement programs to uphold its mandate. (dcwd-jdpdumalag)

Eaga transport ministers agree to revive flights
By Carlo P. Mallo

TWO flights connecting Mindanao to its East Asean Growth Area (Eaga) neighbors will be resuscitated, a testimony to the success of the meeting of the Transport Ministers of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and The Philippines in Davao City.

New air routes are also being proposed to further enhance air traffic in the sub-region.

New air services by Asian Spirit will serve the Zamboanga-Sandakan in Sabah route and by Sriwijaya Air between Davao City-Manado in North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

"We underscore the importance of improving connectivity by integrating the Eaga transportation systems with the view to increasing cross-border trade, tourism and investment in the sub-region," the official statement of the meeting said.

The transport ministers also said the air traffic in the region is set to increase with the developments being implemented by the member states.

According to the ministers, the upgrading of strategic infrastructure facilities to accommodate the anticipated increase in passenger and cargo traffic in the sub-region is more than enough proof that the sub-region is working.

These include the expansion of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport, completion of the Sepanggar Bay Container Terminal, both in Sabah, Malaysia; upgrading of the Serasa Car and Passenger Ferry Terminals in Brunei Darussalam; expansion of the Port of Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga Commercial Port, General Santos Seaport and, Glan Seaport, as well as the upgrading of the Puerto Princesa Airport, Francisco Reyes Airport (Coron, Palawan), Zamboanga Airport and Bongao Airport in the Philippines; and ongoing expansion of Hasanuddin Airport (Makassar), completion of Bitung Port facilities as container terminal, and improvement of safety and security facilities in all Eaga airports in Indonesia.

However, the ministers also admitted there are challenges to overcome in order for the sub-region to be a success. But in the end, they asserted in their statement that it is the cooperation of the four member states that is key to the resolution of the challenges and hurdles. (CPM/With Press release)

DTI sees rise in demand for banana chips
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

TRADE Assistant Secretary Merly M. Cruz reported Friday that with the banana chips promotions program in schools in the Davao Region, DTI will not only provide alternative food that is nutritious to the students but will also help in the expansion of the banana market locally.

"Banana is the biggest industry in the region and with the banana chips promotions program in schools, we can contribute to the expansion of banana market," she said.

Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007

"We are also consistent in the banana chips export. Seventy percent of the country's total export is from the banana industry. Japan has not gotten tired of buying banana from us, maybe they have realized how nutritious banana is," Cruz added.

Cruz revealed that last year's exports of banana chips from the Davao port alone reached US$ 24.77 million, higher than the figure in 2005.

She said the total export of banana chips from the Davao port in 2005 was only recorded at US$18.72 million. The total export figures last year were 32.2 percent higher than the figure in the 2005.

However, despite the increasing trend in exports, local demand for the product has been stagnant over the years even as its popularity is growing in foreign markets such as Europe, US, Japan, Australia, South Korea, and China.

Weak local demand shows the need to consolidate government and private efforts at promoting the product in the domestic market.

Thus, DTI has taken the initiative of promoting banana chips in schools in Davao Region.

DTI, with its cooperators Department of Education 11, Commission on Higher Education 11, Department of Health 11, and the National Nutrition Council, launched banana chips as a nutritious food snacks for the students in all public elementary and secondary schools.

At least eight high schools in the region attended the launching.

These are the Enrico Nograles National High School, the F. Bangoy National High School, Sta. Ana National High School, Bustamante National High School, Ma-a National High School, Leon Garcia Sr. National High School, Davao City National High School, and the Tagum City National High School.

Another airline to open South Korea, Davao flight
By Grace L. Plata

PACIFIC Pearl Airways (PPA), a new Manila-based airline company, will open flights from South Korea to destinations in the Philippines, including Davao City, and forged an agreement to lease a space at the Subic Bay International Airport as its hub.

According to Councilor Peter Laviña, chair of the committee on commerce, trade and industry, this is indeed welcome news for the city.

Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007

Laviña said Eligio Jimenez, the airline's marketing executive, announced that PPA will fly from South Korea to Manila, Subic, Aklan, Cebu and Davao using two advanced Boeing 737-200s, which flew in from Guam last week. The planes sit 114 passengers each.

"The service of this new carrier would augur well with the city's target to establish air links with northeast Asia," Laviña said.

He earlier urged the city to look at this rich Asian region composed of Japan, Korea, and Greater China (Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) rather than just at the sub-regional East Asean Growth Area (Eaga).

"This will not only boost tourism, but trade and investments as well," he added.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines -- The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has completed the expansion here of the biggest port in Mindanao, which cost the government some P250 million.

Isidro Butaslac, engineering head of the Project Management Office here, said the rehabilitation of Berths 1 to 5 was finished late last year and the construction of additional ramps will be completed this month.

“Now, we can cater to the needs of international shipping lines. The expansion will make way for more efficient movement of cargoes and the turn-around time of sea vessels will be lesser,” Butaslac said.

Its recent expansion has made the Cagayan de Oro seaport the largest seaport in Mindanao.

It covers 22 hectares of solid and reclaimed land at the center of the city, off the shores of Macajalar Bay.

The seaport handles nine international shipcalls every month, including cargo lines from the United States, Korea and Japan.

Products such as molasses or raw sugar and bananas are loaded twice a week for export to Japan and Korea.

Fertilizer and rice imports from the US are also unloaded monthly. Around 10 domestic commercial passenger lines dock at the port.

nine ra? bakit ganun ka konti....dito sa davao its 9 a week... but i do agree the port in CdO is the biggest in mindanao....

Cool weather due to ITCZ.
Visayas is halfway between Luzon and Mindanao weather situations.

But anyway, Mintal is as hot as the downtown during midday summer but there was that May week that the whole day we have to wear a jacket and the wind was strong too. Its so similar to the temperatures of towns 2000 feet above sea level.

And I noticed that whenever there is cold weather in Mintal, the visibility of Davao City from Mintal is not clear, somewhat foggy.

PPA celebrates feats on 33rd anniversary
http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p070728.htm&no=4

GM's message highlights the solid 33 years of optimum performance of PPA as a government instrumentality, its relevance in the maritime industry as well as its 2010 vision to meet international standards in at least 10 ports in the country.

Three out of the 10 base-ports slated for priority development and currently being geared up for international markets are in the SoMin District, namely, Davao, General Santos, and Zamboanga.

Current infrastructure interventions in the said three ports consist of Php 1.09B worth of port expansion projects which are expected to be finished within 2007 to drum up PPA's 2010 targets.

Eagle's Bar

We got invited to a bank's customer appreciation night. The invitation said cocktails. We never did like cocktails. Honestly, who likes eating while standing? Plus the thought of not eating rice! Haha! But it was a perfect excuse to dress up and watch Pops Fernandez, Jay-R, and Chris Lawrence. Harharhar! Not a fan, usi perhaps.

The cocktails started at 6 and the show was to start at 8. As expected, the cocktails didn't hit the spot. Maybe with all the standing the food just goes straight to your toes and not to where it should land. Not enough time to go out of the hotel, so we decided to eat at Eagle's Bar.

http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/298/img0431tq0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The menu said-Your safari starts here...

http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/8118/img0438ms5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

We ordered Gambas, Calamares, and Beef Tapa-quick items to cook but to our dismay, it took them a lifetime!

The gambas wasn't that good. Yes it was spicy but with a bland taste. The calamares was better. It was crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. Perfect!

http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/4761/img0439yq9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

We already cancelled the Beef Tapa since we were almost finished eating. Surprisingly, it was still served. The waitress apologized and told us that we can still eat it even if it wasn't on our bill(a peace offering to appease the carnivores). Thanks, but no thanks. Such a waste since it looked and smelled good.

http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/7360/img0445nr4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Maybe service was bad that night since they had exhausted all the kitchen staff to serve the 700 people who attended the cocktails. Either that, or they still had to embark on a safari to hunt for the animal for our tapa.

Filinvest unveils IGACOS leisure-residential project
by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (31 July) -- With beach facility as its anchor, Filinvest will develop a leisure-residential at the Island Garden City of Samal in a 50 hectares area with 1.8 kilometers beachline accessible to all lot owners.

Filinvest vice president Tristan De Las Marias for Visayas and Mindanao in an interview during the project launch of Kembali Coast at the Waterfront Insular Hotel on Sunday said investment fund would cost about P600 million to fully develop the area.

De Las Marias believes there is a big market niche in Davao City and the whole of the island. He said Kembali Coast carries an Asian-island-Balinese theme with accents to hype beach ambiance.

He said this is the first of its kind in Mindanao and is accessible by a 15-minute speedboat ride from Davao City to the site at the Kaputian.

The resort ambiance he said is what many are looking and their market other than the Overseas Filipino Workers are those from the neighboring areas of General Santos City, Marbel in South Cotabato even as he said that they are targeting 20 percent of the local residents and another 30 percent from those market outside Mindanao.

He said their buyers could be a first time home-buyers and many of them could be purchasing their second home or their retirement home.

"We have received a lot of inquiries already and two months from now there will be movement on the ground already," he said.

"It is the lifestyle actually that we are going to offer to the buyers and this start the moment they step on the boat as they travel in 30 minutes towards their home destination where they are treated like kings and queens, an experience they would want to enjoy," he said.

Part of the investment is a 32 ft. speedboat that can accommodate 15 persons to be ferried to the area De Las Marias said. Also included in their plans is access transfer from the airport towards Kembali Coast.

Aside from a residential area is the development of aquasports where enthusiasts and sports lovers would get the chance to go water ski, kayak, diving, wind surf, banana. Hobie cats are available, the paraw, the optimist sailboats and a ride with a 6.5 m Rigid Inflatable Boat.

Eventually he said the sports facilities will be turned over to the homeowners association while Filinvest will initially manage the operation.

Aquaposts Consultant Hitoshi Onozawa said the place really is good for the sea sports and Filinvest invests about P15 million for these facilities.

"One hobie cat would cost a million and the company is into such investment," he said.

With the sports facilities available on the site Onozawa said they will hold lectures about aquasports and teach them the right way for them to enjoy these activities, he said.

He said in as much as these facilities are costly the homeowners association would eventually have these used for a fee for maintenance purposes.

Business Development Officer Geraldine De Gorostiza said they want to maintain exclusivity of the area where only 400 lots at 1,000 sq. m average lot cut and only 20 percent of the lot is build-able, 80 percent will be retained as "green" with a "gentleman's farm".

It is a low-density area with approximately seven lots per hectare, she said.

Other amenities she said are Tree-Park, beach activity area to include among others clubhouse, infinity pool, sea side pool, park with gazebo, etc.

The subdivision features would include concrete roads with street lights, side walk, electrical and water connections, gate and guardhouse, landscaping, combined storm drainage system and sewage line, sewage treatment facility.

De Las Marian meanwhile said that their initial talks with the local government are very positive as they stressed that basic infrastructures are needed on the ground.

"At the rate queries are coming in to our office we are optimistic to be successful on the project," he said.

He said this could be an added tourism attraction and the other way of promoting in Davao City is to offer the Samal City.

He said it is also important that both the local government of the two cities work together on their infrastructure to support the economic and tourism activities of both areas. (PIA XI) [top]

DIA, PNP hold security enhancement, alertness
By Rose B. Palacio

Davao City (31 July) -- The Davao International Airport (DIA) has recently conducted a 2-day security enhancement, capability building, alertness and skills training sponsored by the Philippine National Police regional office under the auspices of PNP XI Chief Supt Director Andres Caro.

Col (Ret) Ramon Salvilla, DIA peace & order consultant, Office of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, said the training was in consonance of the Mayor Duterte's agenda in keeping Davao City safe especially during the BIMP-EAGA transport ministers meeting which was recently held here in Davao City and for other upcoming activities here.

The capability building and skills training was also participated in by the Regional Mobile Group detailed at DIA; the Task Force Davao; Air Transportation Office (ATO)-Civil Security Unit; the PNP Aviation Security Group; K-9; 911; and security guards.

The skills capability building training seminar was aimed at proper and strict implementation of security measures because Mayor Duterte wants to assure Dabawenyos, including visiting ministers or both domestic and foreigners of their peaceful stay in the city and ensured that security forces are prepared at all times to prevent any untoward incident that might occur.
Strong security initiatives and measures are put in place by the Mayor to preempt entry of bad elements in DIA, transport terminals and possible points of entry and he (Mayor Duterte) wants his instructions to be carried out as orderly, Col. Salvilla said.

The safety and welfare of Davao citizens is the paramount concern of the Mayor, Salvilla said.

We cannot afford an incident like the previous airport bombing (few years back) to undermine the peace keeping efforts of the Mayor, he said.

We urged the strong spirit of cooperation and unity amongst every citizen of Davao and be mindful of what's going on in our country, Col. Salvilla further said. (PIA) [top]

IT issues to be discussed in 1st BIMP-Eaga ICT gab
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

INFORMATION and communications technology (ICT) stakeholders from both private and government sectors in BIMP-Eaga, including Australia, will discuss four major topics during the first BIMP-Eaga Information and Communications Technology (ICT) conference in October.

The topics include infrastructure development addressing digital divide issues; human capital development in BIMP-Eaga particularly in IT-related courses and jobs; investment promotions towards promoting BIMP-Eaga as an ICT hub; and innovation ecosystem advancement through sharing of experiences and good practices.

Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007

To address digital divide issues, sharing of experiences particularly on current and forthcoming initiatives towards improving the digital infrastructure and ICT services in BIMP-Eaga and border areas will be done.

It is also expected that each country will present their priority or three ICT issues that they have gathered after conducting their own in-country consultations. These will be presented along with the actions that have already taken to address the issues.

Andrei Fournier, Mindanao ICT spokesperson, said the conference will be "very exciting" since it will be the first time that plenary sessions and talks will be done during the conference.

"Not only the stakeholders from the ICT sector are expected to attend, but also other sectors, the Philippine Economic Zone Authority will also be in the conference," Fournier said.

It was learned that each country will present their individual country's visions, experiences, development model, strengths, limitations and suggested areas for collaboration particularly on the mentioned topics during the plenary sessions.

Covington: Monday and Friday
By Gary Covington
Looking In

YOU'LL like this. Monday's leader opinion column (really an advert for GMA television) was an omigosh-shock-horror expose of one of Davao's girly shows. How the girls earn a peso or two by flaunting their bods.

A couple of pages further on there was a full-color, whole-page feature on the world's highest paid supermodels. Girls who earn a peso or two by - um - flaunting their bods. Hypocrisy anyone?

Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007

Monday was also Sona day which, as time goes on, seems to be less a serious statement of intent and more an honors list. No? Read the papers, watch the news - everybody and their dog have been jumping up to complain that they, dammit, didn't get a mention.

The MILF (murder and mayhem our specialty), Cebu (in the person of Representative Antonio Cuenco), and, a few evenings ago on television, Joker Arroyo were all fluffed up because he wasn't singled out for approval.

I reckon one of Davao's councilors hit the nail on the head when he pointed out that the Sona was, after all, only a speech made by a politician. And we all know what to make of those, don't we?

Moving smoothly on and dress-down days, those Friday's and Saturday's when office workers leave their uniforms at home and wear something more personal, more them. It's a ritual I've never understood - uniforms promote team spirit and, more importantly, to any visitor they give an impression of neatness and efficiency. Why throw away such advantages?

Friday last I paid a visit to Davao's legal office and after the usual gasps and oohs and ahs - undoubtedly something to do with my manly physique and rugged good looks - I was afforded every courtesy, tendered every consideration and left 30 minutes later well pleased with the information I'd called for but -it was Friday and a dress down Friday.

Now imagine me a Japanese businessman visiting the legal office to clear up a point of local law. Here's Davao City's legal office, the legal office of the premier city of Mindanao and yet some of its staff look to have been outfitted by the “ukay-ukay” store around the corner, one woman in particular wearing a denim jacket and below, a pair of ripped and torn raggedy jeans. What tales I'd take back to Japan!

Have a no-uniform day by all means but surely there must remain some sort of dress code, some benchmark of presentable appearance.

Still on governmental issues, a lot has been made this last couple of weeks of the lunatic proposal that the LTO become an insurance agency but so far every commentator has missed the point. It's nothing to do with public money finding its way into private pockets (perish the thought), nothing to do with rooting out fake agencies (just publish a list of LTO approved companies) and all to do with the government's plan to load us all down - despite GMA's promise to the contrary - with yet more bureaucratic red tape and more government employees paid for by you and me.

No gobbledegook this week. I was tempted to take the hatchet to Tek Ocampo's Monday column "Forbidden Dance," Tek writing as if shower girls hadn't been around for the last twenty-five years and, outside their clubs, advertised with twinkly sparkly lights. But I won't.

Excellent photos there Boyet!!

It has always been owned by the Gaisanos. ACCOR Group with Mercure as a brand, is just a hotel management company they used to commission for that hotel. The financial crisis in asia made it very expensive for the hotel to operate under ACCOR thus the change of the management and name.

It’s garden show season again
Manila Bulletin

Once again it is garden show season. Tomorrow, the garden show and trade fair in Davao City will start at the SM City Davao Mall which will run through August 19. This is a highlight of the forthcoming Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival. To follow will be the Midyear Orchid and Garden Show of the Philippine Orchid Society which will be held at the Orchidarium Park in front of Quezon City Hall. This will be from August 30 to September 10. It will not be long and it will be the turn of Los Baños to stage its own garden show, the second for this year. This usually starts in early October, just in time for the Loyalty Day celebration of Los Baños alumni, students and faculty.

When attending a garden show, what should you do to make the most out of your time and effort?

You have to look for something interesting. It could be a unique plant from the mountains, a species that is not commonly grown by gardeners. In Davao, you might look for ferns and other local plants native to Mr. Apo.

At the orchid show in Quezon City, you might be interested in the newly introduced varieties of ornamentals. There are avid plant collectors who bring in new varieties regularly. Just like Vangie Go who has a collection of new Adenium hybrids.

Also meet interesting people in the garden show. In Los Baños, for instance, you might want to know the latest introductions of Dr. Benito S. Vergara who has been traveling to many countries and bringing home some interesting plants. One of them is the Luz Calamansi which is superior to our native variety in a number of ways. It has big fruits with very few seeds and its rind is golden yellow when ripe.

Take advantage also of the free lectures and demonstrations which are conducted in most garden shows.

Nigerian football teams to play in Davao City

Davao City (31 July) -- A PLAN to stage friendly matches between Davao City and a number of teams from Nigeria is now in the drawing board between the Davao Football Association and the Surulere Grassroot Football Club sometime in August 2007 at the DFA Football Field in this city.

This was learned today from DFA Secretary General Erwin Protacio who is currently finalizing the final date of the friendly matches among Nigerian male and female youth players with ages ranging from 15 to 21.

Earlier plans to stage the match in time for the Kadayawan Festival has been shelved due to the difficulties in booking the Nigerian delegation as most hotels in Davao City are already fully booked.

At least forty players and coaches from the African country are expected to plane in here via Manila once all arrangements are completed including final approval of their visas.

The Nigerian Surulere football Club has for its objective to let their youth sail out for ideas and knowledge of development for them to meet with other people from other nations and exchange ideas, culture and developments. (PIA XI/Romy Sabaldan) [top]

Arch of unity
August 1st, 2007 — Peter

Tj would be happy with this news. He would have a new landmark to write about in Neo Davao.

At 3 p.m. today, the Dabaw Kaisa Foundation, the Tsinoy association in the city, will launch together with the Davao Chinatown Project, its Arch of Unity at the end of Magsaysay Ave. in front of the popular Park.

No less than Mayor Rody Duterte would be around for the rites along with the officers, members and supporters of Kaisa led by its chair Angie Angliongto and president Dr. Romy Du.

I will emcee the brief program as a member myself of the Kaisa.

This would be the second of the four arches planned in the Chinatown area. The first one at the other end of the avenue is now being built by the Villa Abrille clan.

Funded purely by private groups, the project aims to help beautify and perk up business and tourism in the Chinatown area. It is supported by a City Ordinance authored by my good friend Councilor Bel Reta. (5:15 a.m.)

^^ This landmark by Architect Arnel Villacampa is inspired by the 400-year old architectural designs of Yuan Garden in Shanghai, China. The columns will be designed similar as the bamboo, a traditional construction material of the Chinese. The archway is embellished with fish and pearl, the symbols of the Villa-Abrille Family whose ancestry originated from Amoy, China, now Xiamen

^^ (By the way, for those non-Davaoenos / local residents who do not know this - there are alot of so called Chinatowns in the country, but Davao is one of the only two officially and legally declared and recognized ChinaTowns in the Philippines - the other one is Binondo in Manila).

Animation school soon to rise in Davao

Davao City (26 July) — An animation school will soon open here in Davao City which aims to tap potential animators in Mindanao.

According to Rhizaldy Reblora, President of AnotherLevelConsulting, which handles the project, the school would be operational by the first quarter of the year and would accept students of different levels. He said that they are finalizing the location of the school this week. “It must accessible to everyone.”

“We plan to have 10 students per class and we plan to have at least four classes.” Reblora said. According to him the animation school which is named Creative Vision Development Center, will be using 3D max and Maya software, while its render farm would be utilizing Dell.

Reblora said that students who would finished the animation course would be put in incubation stage which is compared to a student pursuing On-The Job training. “The student will then decide if he intends to pursue here or somewhere else.”

A sister company of the animation school is the Antfarm Animation studio which has clients in Malaysia and in the United States. Roblero said they are planning to set up an animation studio here in Davao City and with the establishment of the school it hopes to have a sustainable pool of competent animators in Davao.

He said that animation has big potentials as part of the sunshine Business Process Outsourcing industry. However lack of manpower is hindering the growth not just of animation but also of the BPO industry.

According to data from the Commission of Information and Communications Technology, in 2000 there were only about 8,000 jobs in Information Technology and in the BPO sector but in mid 2007 the jobs has risen to about 400,000. However the figures would have been at around 800,000 if there was enough manpower to address the demand.

Davao is included in the Philippine Cyber-corridor Region of the Mega-Regions Development plan. The region cuts across the length of the four super-regions and is seen as where the country’s rising IT and BPO industries are located. (PIA XI)
