New PTA park needs a name
By Ben O. Tesiorna
IF YOU have the knack on naming things, then the City Government of Davao needs you badly.
Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is asking anybody to submit to his office possible names for the newly-constructed theme park –- the old location of the PTA Park.
The new park is presently called simply as "The Park," but Mayor Duterte said he wants a more suitable name for the multi-million theme park that will surely become the next landmark in the city.
Some were suggesting naming the park after Duterte or his late father, Governor Vicente Duterte, but the city mayor is not keen on allowing such, saying it does not sit well with him.
He said he would rather have it named after something that represents Davao City and not after a politician. Also, he said, naming parks and other government facilities after a living person is not allowed by law.
"Sunod na lang pagpatay na ko (You do that when I'm already dead)," Duterte said.
It was not clear though if the City Government will be giving out reward for anyone who would suggest the right name for the park.

Kapalong eyed as capital of Davao del Norte
by E. Parcon
Davao City (8 August) -- Governor Rodolfo P. del Rosario proclaimed the Municipality of Kapalong as the capital town of Davao del Norte province during the recent 59th Anniversary Program of Kapalong at the Freedom Stage, this town.
In his inspirational message, Governor Del Rosario, he assures the people of Kapalong that his administration will continue to implement programs and projects that will address the minimum basic needs of the people.
One of the major projects of Governor Del Rosario is road development, the concreting of Kapalong-Talaingod-Bukidnon road that started earlier on July and expected to be completed by 2010.
"Ride on RDR WHEELS and this anniversary celebration is a beginning of a successful Kapalong, let us work together and unite for the development of Kapalong", governor Del Rosario said.
On the other hand, Mayor Edgardo L. Timbol stated that this year's development projects will focus more on Barangay Maniki particularly the redevelopment of Public Market, construction of an integrated land transport Municipal Terminal, redevelopment of Municipal Plaza into a Town Square, concreting of Poblacion roads, and street lighting.
Intensifying the campaign on solid waste management, peace and order, illegal drugs and illegal gambling ensures Kapalong to be a livable place of Davao del Norte, Mayor Timbol said.
With the P13 million supplemental budget Mayor Timbol assures the Kapalongnians that the project will be implemented on September this year.
Mayor Timbol urge the support of all sectors of Kapalong in particular and the constituents in general as the local government is working in coordination with the provincial and national government to prove to Governor del Rosario that Kapalong is set to become the capital town of Davao del Norte province. davaoeagle August 7th, 2007, 09:36 PM Sales target of Mindanao Trade Exposition: P30-M
By Rizalene P. Acac Published : 2007-08-07
ORGANIZERS of the Mindanao Trade Exposition have reduced the target sales to just about P30 million because of expected lesser number of buyers.
Anthony Soriano, executive vice president of the event, said the amount was lower than the P36 million earned last year mainly because the event was held at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong where traffic to the mall was heavier compared to where it will be held this year.
The event will be held at the SM City Davao Entertainment Plaza on August 14-16.
“It’s the first time that we are holding the MTE in SM City Davao. Usually we do it either in (SM) Megamall (in Metro Manila) or in Central Bank (of the Philippines Convention Center in Davao City). We had a technical difficulty with Central Bank,” Soriano said of the decision of the organizers to change venue.
He said even when there were only about 80 exhibitors last year, the organizers believed there were still more people frequenting the venue last year because of the population of Metro Manila.
He said they are optimistic that they could reach the target considering that the expo is held alongside the celebration of the Kadayawan Festival.
Soriano said they have already received confirmations from Zamboanga City, Caraga Region, Cotabato City, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and from Aklan and Manila whose materials in making their products are from Mindanao. But about 40 percent of the participants are from Davao City, he added.
Andres Jolampong, MTE trustee, added they have invited two product designers from Manila which will assist the exhibitors in developing their products. He said the focus of development will be on coconut.
The MTE 2007 has the theme “Go Green Mindanao” which puts emphasis on the “fresh and natural products of the island and the sustainable use of raw materials in the creation of highly functional world class products that gives expression to the artistic talents of the homegrown exhibitors.”
Among the products which will be displayed include gifts, toys and house wares, furniture and furnishings, fashion accessories, fine jewelry, processed food, fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers and plants, tourism facilities and allied services.
MTE has been existing since 1996 through the efforts of Ann Pamintuan, an exporter of furniture and home décor, and seven other exporters.

davaoeagle August 8th, 2007, 02:34 AM Davao Port to be suited up with a quayside crane
By Carlo P. Mallo
THE upgrade to international standards of the Sasa Port in Davao City is the priority of the International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) as the private firm expanded its operations in the region late last year.
First on the list to be installed is a quayside crane.
ICTSI Executive Vice President Edgardo Abesamis recently said they will be installing the crane at the soonest possible time.
The installation of the crane would allow a more efficient and faster transport of cargo from the ship onto the port.
Apart from increasing the efficiency of the port in the loading or unloading of cargo, the installation of a quayside crane is also one of the prerequisites in transforming Sasa Port into a world class terminal.
Abesamis expressed his confidence that their presence could one day turn Sasa Port at par with the services that are being offered in the international ports of Hong Kong, Taiwan, Busan in Korea, the ports of Malaysia and Thailand, and even that in Manila.
Another aspect that Abesamis focused on is the need for an increase in the yard area of the port. The current yard of Sasa Port is estimated at about 16 hectares only.
"In the yard area, there should also be a power source for reefer containers, facilities for dangerous or hazardous cargo to be segregated in a safe and efficient manner, and yard lighting to enable night work," Abesamis added.
Other developments needed at the Sasa Port would include a computerized Terminal Operations System that would enable the documentation and increased efficiency and transparency in the port services.
"These developments would involve huge capital investments, but the greater challenge is how to get the Davao and Southern Mindanao business community and Sasa Port together to align themselves behind their common interests and achieve this goal of a world class Sasa Port," Abesamis said.
ICTSI acquired the Davao Integrated Port and Stevedoring Services Corporation (DIPSSCOR) in December last year. It is also operating in the countries of Brazil, Poland, Madagascar, Japan, Indonesia, Syria, and China. In the Philippines, they are operating in the ports of Subic Bay, Bauan in Batangas, Makar Wharf in General Santos City, and Sasa Port in Davao City. ...

dinabaw August 8th, 2007, 07:15 AM South Korean firm eyes city for processing plant
By Carmelito Q. Francisco
A SOUTH KOREAN company is looking into investing in a processing plant for sugar from coconut shell, a government official said.
Gil Dureza, chief of the local office of the Board of Investments, said company officials have been visiting the city since four months ago to study the feasibility of putting up a processing plant for “monosaccharide,” or sugar from coconut shell.
“We are trying to lure them to invest here by offering them incentives that will make them stay. I hope we can offer better opportunity,” Dureza told the Mindanao Times, pointing out that officials of the company have told him they were still choosing between the city and Indonesia for the location of their processing plant.
Dureza hopes company officials will be convinced to set up their plant in the city considering that the Davao Region is the biggest producer of coconut in the whole country.
The company, which used to be part of Samsung group until 1995, may invest about P1.4 billion if it pushes through its plan of putting up the plant in the city, Dureza said, adding that his office has also been helping the company locate for a place ideal for its operations.
Dureza added that officials from the company, led by Una Lee, manager for new business development, are expected to arrive in the city within in the month to continue their evaluation on the proposed project.
Company officials also told him, Dureza added, that they were just having problems with the cost of property and power in the city. “They think cost of property and power is higher here than in other locations,” he said, pointing out that his office is looking into how it can suggest a way to reduce operating costs.
Another South Korean company, Woohoo, which is planning to put up a wood processing for electronic gadgets, have also signified its intention to put up the plant. “Its officials are still discussing with us the details of their proposal and the incentives that we can offer,” Dureza added.
The South Korean companies have contemplated in investing in the city despite an earlier call by a councilor asking law enforcement agencies to look into South Korean investments in the city.
In June, Councilor Bonifacio Militar tasked the Bureau of Immigration to investigate the legitimacy of the investments of South Korean in the city, saying he received complaints that some of these businesses were not properly registered.
In a resolution, Militar even asked the agency to list these businesses as he even asked the Bureau of Customs to check on the importation of second-hand vehicles and golf carts.
But Benjamin Lao, regional alien control officer of the Bureau of Immigration, said his office has yet to identify any investment of a South Korean that was not illegitimate. Lao even said that only a few South Koreans in the city were into businesses as most of them were just students and tourists.

dinabaw August 8th, 2007, 07:16 AM Court Okays rehab plan for Apo View
By Joel B. Escovilla
The Regional Trial Court has given the go ahead to the owners of the Apo View Hotel to implement its rehabilitation plan, offering the hotel management and its creditors a needed timeout from the nine-year old legal tussle.
RTC Branch 10 Judge Jaime Quitain ruled in favor of Pamintuan Enterprises, Inc. (Pamenter), the corporation managing the Apo View Hotel, citing the hotel’s assets of P537,736,503.22 at the time of valuation in 2003 far exceed its liabilities, valued at only P414,648.494.79.
“This court finds that given the huge net assets of petitioner, it is capable of restoring, reinstating and rehabilitating itself to its former position and operation and solvency,” Quitain, in his decision dated August 6, 2007, said.
In its decision, the court also took into consideration the hotel’s standing as a landmark institution in Davao City as well as more than 1,000 employees relying on the hotel for their livelihood.
“Plus, the world-class park being developed by the city government in front of the Apo View Hotel will certainly increase the hotel’s value as well as attraction to tourists, both foreign and local, alike,” he said.
The hotel has existed in Davao City for over 50 years and in 1997, the Asian Currency crisis overtook its expansion plan, which exhausted its available plans as its past due accounts matured. The hotel tried to obtain new loans, attract investments and infuse more capital proved futile.
On June 23, 2003, Pamenter filed a petition for rehabilitation which it claimed would best serve its creditors, stockholders and employees. To do this, however, Pamenter asked the court to suspend its payments to creditors temporarily to implement the rehab plan. Nearly 24-hours later, its major creditor Banco Filipino Mortgage and Savings Bank (Banco Filipino) filed its “urgent opposition to the issuance of Stay Order,” claiming that the rehab plan was only meant to “frustrate” the bank’s right to foreclose the hotel. Further, the bank alleged that Pamenter’s principal place of business is in Makati City and not in Davao City.
But the court issued the Stay Order on June 25, 2003 which, among others, appointed a rehabilitation receiver, suspended the foreclosure, and set the initial hearing of the proceedings.
The order started a whole chain of mudslinging and counter-filing that continued on for four years. On July 11, 2003, Banco Filipino filed a motion to inhibit the presiding judge from handling the case but Quitain threw away the petition claiming that he won’t be intimidated. This prompted the bank to file a petition for Certiorari, Mandamus and Prohibition before the Court of Appeals (CA).
In July 2005, the bank raised the case to the Supreme Court after the appeals court dismissed its petition but later withdrew its petition. During the clarificatory hearing on July 25, 2007, Pamenter submitted three options to the rehab plan: straight repayment scheme, debt to equity swap and Dacion en Pago.
All three options were shot down by Banco Filipino alleging the current banking laws do not allow debt to equity conversions, while Dacion en Pago does not involve the assignment of the mortgaged property itself and straight repayment scheme amends the loan agreements which weakens the contractual remedies available to the bank.
Quitain said that while the bank’s intention to foreclose the hotel might result to the Banco Filipino’s claims against petitioner (Pamenter), “the concurrent damage it will most certainly cause to the petitioner’s employees, their families and other creditors would, to say the least, be catastrophic.”
“Only Banco Filipino will benefit from such eventuality,” Quitain said.
Under the approved rehabilitation plan, the hotel management is obligated to pay its creditors over a 15-year period at gradual interest rates of six percent on the first five years, seven percent on the second five years and eight percent on the last five years, with a three-year moratorium for loans with banking institutions.
The rehab plan also compels the owners to prioritize its statutory debts to the Pag-IBIG Home Mutual Development Plan, PhilHealth, Social Security System, Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Davao City Treasurer’s Office while also mandating a shorter period of payment for indebtedness with value less than P100,000.
The court also ordered the creation of an oversight committee -- to be comprised of the rehab receiver, the court’s 3rd party assistant, and representatives of both parties -- which will oversee the strict implementation of the rehab plan.

MtApoStandard August 8th, 2007, 08:11 AM South Korean firm eyes city for processing plant
Lao even said that only a few South Koreans in the city were into businesses as most of them were just students and tourists.

i hope concerned authorities will take these investments seriously. investors are very interested it shows. P1.4 bln for a monsaccharide plant could easily wipe out their investment target amount. indonesia is a tough competitor. my best hope for the city to work hard on these. nothing we can do but watch them how they can stand and deliver their job for the city. wood processing looks huge too.

MtApoStandard August 8th, 2007, 08:57 AM Davao Port to be suited up with a quayside crane
By Carlo P.
In the Philippines, they are operating in the ports of Subic Bay, Bauan in Batangas, Makar Wharf in General Santos City, and Sasa Port in Davao City. ...
this streghtens davao city port position as the busiest port in the island in terms of traffic(of foreign shipcalls). i read 2 months ago sometime, there were already 2 power supply generators in the port. i wonder if the talked about here is another one on top of waht were in place. but indeed, when all of ictci plan get done, davao city port will be a real world class port

Exhibit of old coins, paper bills in August CENTURY-old Philippine coins and paper money will be on exhibit in three sites in Davao City starting tomorrow. This was learned from Rene A. Adapon, numismatist and accredited member of the American Numismatist Association (ANA) and the International bank Note Society (IBNS); Bank Note Society of the Philippines (BNSP). The series of unique exhibits starts on Aug. 7-15 at the NCCC Mall at Matina, followed by SM City Davao and during the opening of the Davao City Museum with the indorsement of the Davao City Tourism Office and conducted for free.
Adapon said the exhibit is his group's contribution to the Kadayawan Festival 2007 which will reel off this week. "We will exhibit a unique collection -a collection of antique and historical Philippine coins and paper money dating as far back as 1861 during the Spanish colonial period, the American occupation up to the present, " he said.

Durian Hotel is already foreclosed by its creditors (not sure though which bank). I believe the facility is already for sale. In the case of Apo View Hotel kasi, the management was able to file a Petition for Rehabilitation even before the creditors could enforce their rights. Unya karon pa jud na na approve ang Rehabilitation Plan, all credits are suspended to give the management (and the appointed Receiver) ample time and opportunity to make the business financially viable again. Unta nabuhat pud ni sa management sa Durian Hotel. Pero a Petition for Rehabilitation kasi is only available if the assets still exceed the liablities. Maybe at that time, nag negative na jud ang Durian Hotel such that the remedy was no longer available to them...

More than 52 percent or 5,080 of the total foreign shipcalls berthed and anchored during the period at the ports under its jurisdiction. Far second was PDO Southern Mindanao at 2,158 with PMO Davao contributing more than 81 percent of the total PDO traffic. Third was PDO Southern Luzon with 1,086 shipcalls, followed by PDO Northern Mindanao with 894 and last was PDO Visayas with 542 foreign shipcalls."
i quoted this from hilagang mindanao thread. in my calculation(i gave up i had to use my calculator), pmo davao absorbed 1,834 shipcalls from toatal pdo southern mindanao figures of 2,158. pdo northern mindanao with 894. but importantly imo, pmo davao is mainly the performance of davao city port quite different from pmo cdo which covers mct where it has jurisdiction over(its mct and cdo ports in one). i guess most of pdo normin 894 calls were from mct for pmo cdo performance. pdo davao i understand cover ports of general santos, maguindanao parang, mati. pdo north min are, iligan, surigao, ozamis, ?nasipit, and mct of pmo cdo. this is how i can best understand what was posted there.

^^ Mr Sonny Labao, chairperson of the Federation of Philippine Institute of Architects (DAVAO) confirmed this during the 5th Mindanao Design and Construction Fair last June 29 to July 1 at SM CITY DAVAO....
Davao’s construction industry enjoys robust growth
Sunday, July 8th, 2007
The construction industry in Mindanao is experiencing robust growth with more residential houses and commercial buildings being constructed.
Federation of Philippine Institute of Architects (FPIA) chair Sonny Labao said the industry is better this year than last year with an estimated 15 million houses built in Mindanao alone.
He also said three 10-story commercial buildings are going to be built somewhere in Davao City. However, Labao declined to divulge the details of the projects to avoid preempting them, hinting only that one of them is a hotel.
On the other hand, FPIA committee head architect Romy Birrey said Mindanao is second only to Metro Manila in terms of processing building permits, indicating robust movement in the construction industry.
He attributed this upward trend to the city’s peace and order stability.
“Because of the city’s peace and order, everybody is coming back,” he said.
Birrey said the flooding of tourists from Asian countries such as South Korea and Japan and the non-availability of vacant apartments as well as fully booked hotels signal the city’ economic growth.
Meanwhile, City administrator Wendel Avisado said the city’s construction industry is “a sellers market.”
He said of the city’s P1.5 billion acquired income last year, a considerable amount was contributed by the construction industry.

Philippines' ICTSI H1 net profit 1 bln pesos, driven by overseas operations
http://www.iii.co.uk/news/?type=afxnews&articleid=6231529&action=article
Article layout: raw
MANILA (Thomson Financial) - Philippine port operator International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) said its net profit in the first-half increased 23 percent to 1.04 billion pesos from a year ago, boosted by its expanding operations overseas.
Its revenue for the same period rose 16 percent to 6.4 billion pesos.
ICTSI's second quarter net profit rose 12 percent year-on-year to 535 million pesos.
The company said its second quarter revenue, which grew 16 percent to 3.2 billion pesos, came mostly from the combined operations of its ports in Manila, Poland, Brazil and Madagascar, accounting for 71 percent of total revenue. The rest were from its new subsidiaries in Indonesia, China and Davao in southern Philippines.
"The solid financial results of the first six months of the year are a result of the good execution of the company's growth strategy by our business units," ICTSI chairman and president Enrique Razon Jr said in a statement.
Razon said the company's recent acqusitions are already producing good results.
"For the rest of the year and into 2008, we will focus our efforts in the start-up operations of our new terminals in China, Ecuador and Syria, and the development of a new terminal in Columbia, while continuing to look for new business opportunities in port operations."
ICTSI recently won a 20-year concession to operate a cargo terminal in Ecuador and acquired a stake of 60 percent in Yantai Gangtong Container Terminal Co Ltd, which manages a port in China.
At present, ICTSI operates container terminals here and in Poland, Brazil, Madagascar, Indonesia, Japan and Syria.

KulasKusgan August 8th, 2007, 03:40 PM Durian Hotel is already foreclosed by its creditors (not sure though which bank).

Durian was foreclosed by MBTC? i think ang ugat ng problema ni escora ay yong deal nila with SP bldg construction. di daw sila nabayaran?

benzon August 8th, 2007, 06:27 PM SM group builds convention center in Davao
Davao City — SM City Davao will erect a new multi-purpose building located the back of its existing shopping mall to house upscale shops, contact centers and a convention center.
Debbie Go, SM City Davao manager told local media the structure would be built on a three-hectare lot adjacent to the current shopping complex, which occupies 10 hectares, in this city’s Ecoland district.
Details of the project are still unavailable since plans have yet to be finalized, she said.
"These are all still in the drawing board and have yet to be approved," she told local media.
A local source, however, said the planned building would be smaller by "a few hectares" to the existing SM City Davao, which has 76,000 square meters. The existing shopping mall was built in 2001 at a cost of at least P1.5 billion, officials of the Davao City Investment and Promotion Center said.
Ms. Go confirmed the company has submitted its application for accreditation as an information technology park to avail of perks granted by the government for such projects.
Davao has only one such park, the Anflocor Group’s Damosa Complex in Bajada district, which hosts Link2Support, a Manila-based contact center that also operates a similar facility in Cagayan de Oro.
Other than SM City Davao, the New City Commercial Center in Matina district has also filed an application for a information technology park accreditation from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.
Eriberto Barriga, Jr., New City Commercial Center director for shopping mall business, said the group was negotiating with Sutherland Global Services, an American contact center firm, which plans to start its Davao operation within the year.
The city has three active contact centers: Cyber City Teleservices, Link2Support and homegrown-firm Global Seven although city officials said they have received about half a dozen inquiries from business process outsourcing investors since last year.

dinabaw August 9th, 2007, 02:12 AM Josh treats film crew to lechon
http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/6834/josh225xz5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
By EDITH REGALADO
The Philippine Star
MT. DIWALWAL, Compostela Valley – What can $260 buy? Lots of lechon (roast pig) and lots of beer.
Hollywood star Josh Hartnett wanted to know what constituted a typical Filipino feast. When told that lechon and the local beer were enough, he took out 13 pieces of $20 bills from his pocket and threw an impromptu party for the local and foreign production crew of his new film as well as the Philippine Army security detail assigned to him on his last night here.
Hartnett, who went on location shooting at a gold-rush site on Mt. Diwalwal for the $18-million detective thriller "I Come with the Rain," gave the feast as a way of thanking Filipinos for their hospitality.
Hartnett egged Bryan Catoera, owner-driver of the black Isuzu Trooper used by the actor throughout his six-day stay here, to get the party started, as shooting for the film was packing up Tuesday night.
"I told him lechon and San Miguel beer and he immediately got from his pocket 13 pieces of $20 bills to be used to buy two lechon at P4,000 each and five cases of San Miguel," Catoera told The STAR shortly before the small get-together started Tuesday night at the dining hall of the Pink House Hotel where Hartnett and the rest of the production crew of Central Films Productions were billeted.
With beer in hand, Hartnett gamely made the first cut on the roasted pigs. Hartnett then went around, handing bottles of beer to everyone.
Hartnett, who admitted giving up being vegetarian for some time already, said spending $260 for the lechon and beer was nothing compared to the hospitality and kindness of the Filipinos he interacted with while filming at the mining site.
"You simply can’t help but love these people around here. It’s great that they like me, too," Hartnett told The STAR.
Hartnett, who plays Kline, a retired Los Angeles policeman who reaches Mt. Diwalwal in Monkayo, Compostela Valley in search of an heir with healing powers, only had praises for Filipinos.
"Everybody here is so nice. I do not have a problem with anybody. I am having a wonderful time. We have been working a lot and no time to hang out and the people here are so beautiful and so nice," Hartnett added, as he was partying and hugging everyone around, until he called it a night at 11 p.m.
Hartnett, who arrived last Thursday, said he hopes to spend "a little bit more time to travel around" before flying to Hong Kong to continue with the filming.
‘Easy to handle’
Army 1st Lt. Brian Bagaipo, commander of the Charlie Company of the 28th Infantry Battalion tasked to secure Hartnett and the film crew, said the actor was "very easy to handle."
"He has no qualms, no star-complex, no demands, or anything," Bagaipo said.
He said the same thing about Tran. "The director and the other stars were all so nice to us. They never demanded anything from us other than what we can provide for security."
Bagaipo said Hartnett would even joke at times about the tight security component that moved with him wherever he went.
"Do I really need this kind of security?" Hartnett would ask, as he preferred to walk around the mining village during his free time and mingle with the children whom he also handed out money to.
Hartnett was reported to also have the habit of spending the early hours of the morning sitting on a chair just outside the store on the ground floor of the 15-room Pink House Hotel, just watching the villagers go by and saying hello to them.
No fear
Hartnett said he did not have second thoughts about coming to the Philippines, especially in Mt. Diwalwal, considered to be a stronghold of communist insurgents.
"I had no hesitations coming here. I never heard negative reports about the Philippines," Hartnett said, adding, "Why? Is there any problem here? I do not see any problem around."
Multi-awarded director Tran Anh Hung, who wrote the screenplay and directs "I Come with the Rain," told The STAR security at Mt. Diwalwal was never an issue when he strongly insisted that it would be one of the locations for the shooting of the film set for release next year.
Mt. Diwalwal, where the country’s largest deposits of gold ore could be found, is close to 200 kilometers away from Davao City and could only be reached by 4x4-powered vehicles or by motorcycles.
"I’ve watched a documentary of Mt. Diwalwal 15 years ago in Paris. And from then on, I always said I would do it in Mt. Diwalwal because the place is amazing," Tran said.
Catoera, meanwhile, is keeping the $20 bills that Hartnett gave him to buy lechon and beer as "souvenir."
He said Hartnett was so down-to-earth and "ate almost anything."
"He loves our fruits. He and director Tran ate a lot of bananas on the set. He was also fond of our rambutan and durian," he added.
Hartnett stayed at the P500 per night VIP Room 7 of the Pink House Hotel that did not have any air conditioner. He said his experience in the Philippines, especially at Mt. Diwalwal, gave him enough reason to come back.
"I am sure, sometime in the future, I’ll be back," he told The STAR.

Former education official to be city's consultant
By Grace L. Plata
FORMER Department of Education (DepEd) undersecretary Juan Miguel Luz will soon be Davao City's consultant on education concerns.
According to Councilor Ma. Belen Sunga-Acosta, member of the Local School Board, she has already conferred with Luz on the matter in her recent trip to Manila.
Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007
Luz is favorably endorsed by the Local School Board thus Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has already sent a letter to Luz inviting him to be a consultant of the school board.
"Although he is not with DepEd anymore, his advocacy remains strong and committed to the betterment of our public education system, in particular, and the welfare of our youth in general," Acosta said of Luz in her privilege speech Tuesday.
"I am also happy to report, that Juan Miguel Luz has manifested that he is inclined to accept the invitation of Mayor Duterte to be a consultant of the Davao City School Board. On a personal note, perhaps, as fate would have it, DedEd's loss might certainly be Davao City's gain, considering the professional background and outstanding public service record of Mr. Luz," Acosta added.
Luz currently sits as president of International Institute of Rural Reconstruction, an international NGO focused on developmental programs.

City is among 3 pilot sites for solid waste management
By Grace L. Plata
DAVAO City has been chosen as one of the three pilot sites for an ecological solid waste management system project funded in part by the Japanese government.
The project, aimed at introducing suitable solid waste management systems in local government units, will be initially implemented in two other: Calbayog City in Eastern Visayas and Sagay City in Northern Mindanao.
Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007
The Davao City Council already passed a resolution Tuesday authorizing Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to sign in behalf of the city a "record of discussions, equivalent to a memorandum of agreement," with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica).
Jica will provide the services of Japanese experts, equipment, training and other forms of technical cooperation while the Philippine government will take measures to assign technical and managerial personnel, provide the project office and allocate counterpart funds for the implementation.
By the end of the three-year project, it is expected that the cities have developed and finalized a local solid waste management plan for effective diversion of solid waste, which can be replicated by other LGUs and customized according to the needs.

Peng Hok August 9th, 2007, 02:27 AM ^^ Mr Sonny Labao, chairperson of the Federation of Philippine Institute of Architects (DAVAO) confirmed this during the 5th Mindanao Design and Construction Fair last June 29 to July 1 at SM CITY DAVAO....

The pizza was good! We had two kinds, but I wasn’t there when my friends ordered, so I’m not sure what they were. But both were really delicious. And the spaghetti was a treat too — although I think they put too much oregano and basil…
Boyd's spaghetti
I’m definitely going back to Boyd’s for a more thorough review! :)
Update:
Boyd’s is on Palma Gil St., Bajada. It’s that road going into Bo. Obrero. The place is right across from Wheels ‘n More Drive (where AutoShop is). When you turn onto Palma Gil from J.P.Laurel Ave., Boyd’s is on the left, not far from the corner.

Editorial: Marco Polo Davao
NO QUESTION about it. The 18-storey hotel Marco Polo Davao is the city's tallest building and most visible landmark in the downtown area. But that is not what is most remarkable about the hotel. Marco Polo Davao has been cited for the second year in a row as Highest in Guest Satisfactory among all the Marco Polo chain of hotels in Asia.
Another feather in its cap is the fact that in a recently conducted event in Hong Kong last July 26, Hotel Club.com, the leading online accommodation provider that conducted the global consumer survey from October to December 2006, bared the list of Asia's best Hotels and Resorts. The gala ceremony held at the Cafe Deco at The Peak was attended by representatives from the 4,500 nominated hotels across Asia to witness Marco Polo Davao's inclusion in the short list of 350 finalists along with other finalists like Shangrila, Mandarin Hotel, Manila Peninsula, Hyatt Hotel and Amanpulo.
Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007
The recognition is a testament to Marco Polo Davao's influence in the southern region beyond the Philippines' neighboring countries.
Now, being one of the finalists is already quite an achievement in itself, considering the 4,500 entries. Of course, the icing on the cake would be if Marco Polo Davao finally wins all the marbles, so to speak. But that is still in the realm of the possible. But, who knows?
Sun.Star Davao congratulates the management and staff of Marco Polo Davao for this wonderful achievement. Cheers!

Hollywood film seen to change Diwalwal's image
by RG Alama
Davao City (9 August) -- The filming of a Hollywood movie starring A-List American actor Josh Hartnett and Japanese popular celebrity actor Takuya Kimura is hoped to change Diwalwal's image from a "wild west" type of town to a peaceful community capable of sustaining development and progress.
"The filming will prove that Diwalwal is peaceful and not like the former image which was associated to our place" Diwalwal Barangay Captain Franco Tito said during the filming wrap-up party held last Aug. 7 at the Pink House Lodge in Purok Depot in Diwalwal.
The movie "I come with the Rain" recently finished its 6-day filming without any untoward incident. The movie was directed by renowned French-Vietnamese film director Tranh Anh Hung.
"It was a surprisingly smooth shoot, the Filipino crew was great, and the community was great," Josh Hartnett, the lead actor said.
"Dili kaayo makita ang epekto, especially sa economy pero daku kaayo ang epekto sa pagapakita na sa Diwalwal naa nay kalinaw." (The effects could not be immediately be seen, especially in the economy, but it has such a big effect in showing that in Diwalwal there is already peace.) Franco Tito said.
According to Tito, what he provided to the cast and crew was the same treatment he would give to any visitors, be it coming from Davao or coming from Hollywood.
"I just provide security and safety to the place, the same I would accord to any visitor who would come here. No preferential treatment," Tito said.
He said except for a few who were stranded in when the roads were closed to traffic, the community was happy that the film was shot there. "Many people were given jobs, some as extras, and others as part of the crew," Tito said.
With the news of a successful filming, he hopes that perceptions about Diwalwal would start to change. "In the past all they would see or hear about Diwalwal were negative things, they did not see the beauty of the place."
Hartnett, praised the movie location describing it as a gorgeous part of the world. "I hope to return here someday." The actor said. (PIA XI) [top]

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/09 August) -- The creator of a story-creation game that is now earning rave reviews and building a big fan base in Metro Manila is a Dabawenya artist.
As kids growing up in Davao, Ria Lu and her sisters would make up stories in the vein of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, the Chronicles of Narnia, and their favorite anime series. This passion for imaginative character and world creation has been the driving force for the 26-year old artist. It's what led her to a career in video game graphics and design: Ria graduated from the Tokyo Technical College and teaches Digital Arts at First Academy of Computer Arts.
Ria graduated from the Stella Maris Academy here and went to De La Salle University for college.
From the high tech world of video games, though, Ria momentarily returned to the fundamentals of the creative endeavors that she enjoyed with her sisters, to create Talecraft, a story-creation game based on cards, divided into Genre (story type), Archetype (characters), and Keys (plotlines, keywords, and actions).
Players pick a group of cards at random and tell a story based on the elements they get. How they complete the rest of the story is left to the players, a press statement from Talecraft said.
“Such an open-ended game presents many possibilities. Some people use Talecraft as an exercise in storytelling as improvisational performance, making it perfect as a party game. Some writers use Talecraft as a prompt to overcome their mental blocks when coming up with short stories,” it said.
Gameplay aside, one of the attractions for Talecraft is its high quality production values. The packaging and design is on par with many other international top notch hobby games. All this has been a labor of love for Ria who, aside from designing the mechanics of the game, drew the illustrations for all the cards herself.
Talecraft is poised to become a significant intellectual property export for the Philippines in the booming international gaming market. Dabawenyos can all be proud that it came from the mind and hand of one of their own.
Talecraft is available in Davao at Spro Coffee Shop, Gen. Luna St. and at Pet Street Gallery in DAMOSA. Or call 227-8262 or email dominique.cimafranca@gmail.comThis email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it to place an order. You can also visit the Talecraft website at http://talecraft.komikasi.com.
The game retails for P350. (MindaNews)

xzibit31 August 9th, 2007, 04:26 AM i dunno kung totoo ba tong chismis...
Durian was foreclosed by MBTC? i think ang ugat ng problema ni escora ay yong deal nila with SP bldg construction. di daw sila nabayaran?
on Apo, ang creditor daw ay LBP. then a loan buyout- the loan acct was transferred to BF. and later financial crisis/rehab.
on Royal Mandaya, muntik ng malunod sa utang pero is it true na ang Dasia daw ang nag-save ng hotel?
yes it was forclosed by mbtc..and yes the ugat of the problem was the deal for the sp building...without the payment of the sp building, they could not make their payments to mbtc...
yes it is true that dasia saved the mandaya....if i can remember, the utang of mandaya was about 350 million, not including the interest...
xzibit31 August 9th, 2007, 04:27 AM ^^ guys im just wondering...all of these events occured during the financial crisis (the mandaya hotel and apo view) 1997 to early 2000's? Or just recently?
If it is just recently, how could this happen considering the viable market that we have for our local hoteliers? Is it because of mismanagement or economic problems?
it happend around 1997 to 2000....lahat nun econimic related....

Sara is not joking
Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is planning to take a two-week vacation leave in time for the Kadayawan celebration. Vice Mayor Inday Sara will be acting Mayor in his absence.
To those who are thinking that they can “play” while the Mayor is away, please don’t. The blood of the lady mayor is still a Duterte.
Remember in her inaugural speech last July 2 when she said that she would not hesitate to send to Hell those who will not mend their ways, she’s not joking. Subukan ninyo.
-o0o-
The acting mayor said she has been expecting that at one point she was going to be acting mayor and expressed that she is not nervous in temporarily taking over the post of her father.
Of course, why should she be nervous? If she succeeded making some changes in the Sangguniang Panlungsod with the series of office orders to discipline personnel and elective officials in less than 30 days of her office, then there is no reason for her not to succeed at City Hall. Good luck.

Hartnett wowed by Diwalwal

Davao City — Hollywood actor Josh Hartnett had nothing but nice words for Diwalwal during his six-day stay here in the mining community located in the hinterlands of Compostela Valley Province.
“This is a gorgeous part of the world,” said Hartnett, an A-list American actor known for his roles in the films Black Hawk Down and Pearl Harbor. The actor said that he was wowed by the natural beauty of Diwalwal during their filming here.
“We shot in these waterfalls, the view was very spectacular, Diwalwal is a very beautiful location. Hartnett said. The 29-year old actor essays the lead role in the movie “I come with the Rain” playing an American detective who came to Mindanao in search for a missing billionaire’s heir.
Hartnett, who spends a great deal of time traveling around the world, said that he wants to return someday to Diwalwal if he has the time. He also says the community are one terrific people.
“I feel right at home. The kids are always smiling,” he said. Hartnett also was not bothered being in a place branded as a sort of “wild, wild west.”
“I did not feel fear, the only fear I have is the thought of being surrounded by armed security and not the fear about going to this place,” Hartnett said. Hopefully I could spend some time and explore some places here, he added.
Soldiers of the Philippine Army’s 28th Infantry Battalion provided tight security to the six-day shoot which was filmed in various locations around Diwalwal. The Barangay of Mt. Diwata under barangay Captain Franco Tito also provided support to the filming.
Hartnett also voiced apprehensions about the future of the locale. “Diwalwal is changing; I hope the many spectacular things I’ve seen here, would still remain.” The actor also said the visit changed him in a way. “I only spent a week here and what I’ve seen here in Diwalwal is more than what I would usually see in one week.”
Film director Tran Anh Hung, chose to film in this part of Compostela Valley Province after watching a television documentary about Diwalwal 15 years ago. It was reported that before filming, the U.S-based film crew received a letter from their union urging them not to come to Diwalwal due to security concerns.
However Director Hung’s persistence eventually led to the realization of the first Hollywood movie to be filmed in Diwalwal. “I cannot imagine building a film set in any place, other than Diwalwal,” Hung said. (PIA XI)

Cheers!
in one of related news article it says the only hotel chain outside manila to enter the shortlist of finalists. impressive indeed

Condominium! Normally, we think of it as a highrise tower which is consist of a modern and glass- filled facade.
In Davao, condominium living is a life with style minus the towering buildings. Today, two condominium projects are being constructed and marketed in Davao. First, is the ECO 4000 Residences Condominiums located few meters away from SM City Davao and SM City Convention and IT Center/Park. The second project is the Azure Condominium located in the Island Garden City of Samal.
The ECO 4000 Residences Condominiums is conveniently located in Ecoland. Imagine this, instead of driving kilometers to work, you just have to cross the street where SM City Davao Convention and IT Center/Park will be located (let's say you're an IT professional or a BPO professional). Want to watch a movie? then on the next block is SM City Davao where you can watch your fave flick, dine, shop, and have fun. Then head back home walking while enjoying the scenery of the majestic Mt. Apo. Hmmmmm...sounds like a dream?

http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/5808/eco40002wq3.jpg
The second project to watch out for is the Azure Resort Condominium located on the Gold Coast of Limao, Island Garden City of Samal. Azure will be developed with Mediterranean influences with authentic tropical elegance and a delightful seaside accomodation. Enjoy life away from the hustle and bustle of the city, take a splunge, have a massage, or walk along the seashore, - all located within your residential condominium complex. Azure promises an ultimate resort living.

Here’s SM City Davao and its vicinity. From the look at it, another commercial and business district is on the rise. Let me call it as The SM City Business Complex (this is not its official name though). The area is consist of SM City Davao, the upcoming SM City Convention and IT Center/Park, existing commercial strip with lowrise buildings, and the ongoing construction of ECO 4000 Condominiums (two five storeys condominium buildings.). This shot from space (provided by google earth) was taken sometime around 2003. The commercial strip is not yet visible same as with the on going construction of the ECO 4000 Condominiums.

NEODAVAO (http://neodavao.wordpress.com)
August 9, 2007
- that Kadayawan Festival was once called as “Apo Duwaling” which is a contraction of the icons of Davao City - Mt Apo, Durian, and Waling Waling.
- that it was renamed to “Kadayawan sa Dabaw” to better reflect the merry spirit and indigenous theme of the celebration.
- that Dayao, the root word of Kadayawan, is a Dabawnon word meaning “good/superior/superb”. It’s derivative Madayaw is an all positive lumad word that connotes happines, beauty, bounty festivity, and a good fortune.
- that it used to be a cultural rite, where ethnic tribes around Mt. Apo gathered to celebrate the bountiful harvest.
- that it is considered as one of the oldest festivals in the country. However, Kadayawan was institutionalized in 1986.
- that it transformed into the festival of festivals in the late 90s. Before other cities in the country used the phrase “festivals of festival” for promotion purposes, Kadayawan was and still is definitely the festival of festivals as seen by the number of festivals and events within Kadayawan Festival. Participants and festival dancers all around Mindanao converge in Davao during the Kadayawan to be part of the islands biggest and grandest festival.
- that the first floral float parade in the country (before Penagbenga) is Kadayawan’s Floral Float Parade.
- that the Kadayawan Festival 2004 was the first regional fiesta/festival that was broadcasted live nationwide and worldwide through ABSCBN’s Studio 23, ABSCBN International, and ABSCBN Regional Network Group. Live regional coverages were then followed in places such as Cebu, Baguio, Iloilo, and other cities.
- that Kadayawan Festival took the centerstage during the travel exhibit attended by the Philippines in Korea just this year.

All is well that end’s well, after 6 days of filming our Hollywood guests were pretty much enjoying their stay in Mt. Diwalwal. Josh Hartnett can testify to the world that its safe here and its a good place to shoot movies. From what I’ve read, Josh even say there is nothing to fear and all he sees are happy people. By the way, there will be a scene that will feature Davao International Airport, great.
Thank you to all the staff and crew of this Hollywood project for trusting us. Hope more Hollywood films will be shot in Davao soon.

What can I say but to welcome this Koreans and treat them not as guests but as fellow Dabawenyos. Welcome brothers!

Sara: Best doctors, nurses should cater to Dabawenyos
By Carlo P. Mallo
DAVAO City Vice Mayor Sara Zimmerman-Duterte will be pushing for better healthcare for the people of Davao City.
Sara wants more stringent standards to be implemented on the healthcare workforce.
Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007
The vice mayor said Thursday that the city should not only have the best healthcare equipment, but also the best medical practitioners.
"We must impose strict standards on the medical practitioners that we have in the city," Sara said.
She said only the best doctors, nurses, and other medical practitioners should cater to Dabawenyos.
"There is a need to provide better healthcare for the people of Davao," Sara said. "Everyone, at one point or another, becomes a guest of the healthcare industry."
Davao City is gearing up to become part of the "medical tourism industry."
Various hospitals in the city, both government and private, have been procuring the latest equipment in medical technology and is continuously upgrading their facilities to provide the best and quality healthcare service possible.
The government-owned Davao Medical Center recently opened its P350-million Mindanao Heart Center wing early this year. Other private hospitals, such as the Davao Doctor's Hospital have also followed suit.

P50T up for best name for newly-built park
By Grace L. Plata
DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte promised to give P50,000 to anyone who can come up with the best name for the newly constructed theme park at the former PTA grounds.
Duterte on Wednesday said he would really like the Dabawenyos to get involved in choosing the name for the park so that it would become a citywide effort.
Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007
For now, the new park is simply called as "The Park," but Duterte said he wants a more suitable name for the multi-million theme park that will surely become the next landmark in the city.
Duterte said to come up with the appropriate name for the park is for one to trace its history.
"Natingala bitaw ko nganong PTA ang tawag ana. All I know is its from Parent-Teacher Association but I do not know how that came about. Ma-explain unta na," Duterte said.
Some were suggesting naming the park after Duterte or his late father, Governor Vicente Duterte, but the city mayor is not keen on allowing such, saying it does not sit well with him.
The park in question, according to the mayor, will be partially open within the duration of the Kadayawan Festival.

2007 Kadayawan fest kicks off
By Grace L. Plata
THE 2007 Kadayawan sa Dabaw festival is finally open and if its grandiose opening is any indication of how the festival will go this year, then the organizers are assured of success.
The 22nd Kadayawan Festival kicked off Wednesday with a Holy Mass followed by the formal opening program at the Quezon Park fronting the City Hall building.
Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007
The event, attended by the city's officials led by Vice-Mayor Sara Z. Duterte and leaders in the city's business sector, was indeed a kaleidoscope of cultural colors as the eight major indigenous tribes of the city staged excerpts of their cultural celebrations to be presented within eight consecutive days (August 10 to 17) at the Rizal Park - one whole day for each of the eight tribes.
Representatives from each of the eight tribes -- Tagabawa, Ovu-Manobo, K'lagan, Tausug, Sama, Maguindanao, Maranao, Ata -- who are this year's Hiyas ng Kadayawan candidates, were also presented to the public.
City Administrator Wendel E. Avisado, co-chair of the festival for the government sector, said this is the time when the festival is back to its indigenous roots, when the participants and performances are authentic.
Councilors, for the very first time, were not mere spectators but also took part in the program.
Councilors Myrna Dadolo-Ortiz, Amilbangsa Manding, Edgar Ibuyan, Karlo Bello, Rachel Zozobrado, Samuel Bangoy, Louie John Bonguyan, Susan Isabel Reta, and Tomas Monteverde IV each take turns narrating the celebration's history and significance.
The opening ceremonies proved faithful to this year's theme, "Lumadnong Kagikan, Mabungahong Kinaiyahan, Gasa sa Kahitas-an."

Garcia: Nice Golfing Weather
By Imee Garcia
HELLO golfing buddies! Aren't you glad we have such wonderful weather here. In Manila, and other parts of Luzon, it is unfortunate that they experience typhoons. There are also times when parts of Visayas are affected by typhoons and heavy rains. But here in Davao, we have golfing weather all throughout the year.
I remember playing in the finals of the Samsung Philippine Amateur Golf tournament last year in Malarayat, Batangas. We had to play during a typhoon. I played terribly! How could I hit my shot well when the wind was trying to push me away. There were some players who sliced their shot and their ball landed two fairways away. There were times when I'd use my driver and my ball would land just a hundred feet away. It was crazy weather. I am so glad we don't have that kind of weather here.
Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007
Have you heard of a place called St. Moritz? It is a place in the mountains of Switzerland. It's a skiing destination for the elite, the high society, big time personalities, who's who, and European royalty. Would you believe, you can play golf there as well? They have snow golf available in the frozen lake where it's sunny 322 days in a year. I would use a colored ball if I decide to play there. Hehe. It wouldn't be fun to spend 95 percent of the time searching for your white golf ball.
In the Middle East, in Riyadh for example, there are courses where you had to play in sand in the desert. In most of these sandy golf courses, the balls they use are red, the greens and fairways are brown.
They use red colored balls because in the desert because the glare of the sun can be too much that you may not be able to locate a white ball from among the rocks and sand. The greens are brown or black because they are made of oil-treated sand. The fairways, brown as well and hard because of the oil that they spray over them to keep them compact and protect them from the wind.
And look at us...complaining about the grass we have. During the rainy season, some fairways get so muddy. We frown when we are instructed to keep our golf cars on the cart paths. Come dry season when there's not much rain, the fairways get so dry and crack up and we complain that our golf balls bounce erratically.
We should count our blessings. It's hard to maintain a golf course, and it can get quite expensive. Lucky for us these days, there are a lot of foreigners who come to play here, and that means more income for all the courses, and more income means, bigger budget for maintenance!
Well my friends, enjoy playing golf in Davao. Consider ourselves blessed! Our courses are close by, unlike in Manila. And we have such wonderful weather.
I would like to ask my friend, Paul Dakudao, who runs Lanang Golf & Country Club now, please please please, we beg you...we miss the turon! Even the local Koreans miss it. Please find a way to sell those again. Thanks in advance!

`Dumog sa Davao' underway Saturday
THE "Dumog sa Davao" Vice Mayor Inday Sara Duterte Grappling Cup will unfold on Saturday, at the Evergold Recreation Center, fronting the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) in Barrio Obrero.
Spokesperson Mars Cenojas said they are promoting a native form of martial arts without the usual striking in this tournament.
Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007
Cenojas told members of the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) in their weekly sports forum Thursday, at the Tower Inn, that they have invited grapplers from all over Mindanao to join the competition.
"There is no age limit for those who want to join in the free admission event," he said.
Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the winners in the tournament organized by the Mindanao Mixed Martial Arts Association.

Ledesma: A fallen bridge, a failed promise and some bonanza
By Jun Ledesma
Sunbursts
WE OUGHT to be angry. We cannot be sympathetic with Malacañang all the time, lest this kindness be abused. I personally do not want to see our Mayor Rody Duterte be solicitous each time we need the intervention of Malacañang for some emergency measures that we need.
Take the case of Generoso Bridge 1. Four months had elapsed since the western span collapsed; we had been fed nothing but promises. First, they told us that we will have that bridge on or before December or then regional director Dimas Suguilon of DPWH go hang. Dimas sent all the idle equipment that he has which of course, were never used. Then they assured us that the P320-million fund is already available. Well, what do you know? Dimas has been promoted for what basis I don't know. Maybe he succeeded in appeasing us with all the dramatics and promises that were never fulfilled.
I asked for some explanation why, and they gave me a lame excuse that the plan is still in the drawing board and furthermore structural plans cannot be hurried. Four months in the drawing board! That shows you how incompetent are our government engineers. And I thought that we are not building a replica of the Golden Gate.
What is infuriating here is that when Luzon is being threatened with dry spell, the whole government machinery is made available. They have all the solutions for every emergency and they open all the government coffers to address whatever is required. Nakakainggit. It is this lopsided treatment that we see that makes the blood boils.
Against this backdrop of iniquitous iniquity is the BIR announcement that their Davao City revenue district collections have surpassed targets. What an insulting irony. We raise the money to support the Arroyo government and prop the economy of Luzon.
For what do we get in return? Promises, promises, promises. Our city government had been forced to borrow money from banks to deliver infrastructures needed to boost local economy. Private enterprises have to build their own ports because the PPA facilities are too narrow it can only accommodate one ship at a time.
When you hear and read invitations for bid for the construction and modernization of ports facilities in Manila, you can only droll at it. Maglaway lang tang taga Dabaw. Isn't this shameless discrimination?
We have to be angry and I think that Mayor Duterte should deliver the first salvo against DPWH and the Palace by the Pasig river if only to send a strong message that hey guys you owe us not we owing you!
We should stop fraternizing with Malacañang if there is no indication of a reciprocal gesture. Enough with the insults. Enough with cajolery.
Kadayawan
BTW, the Kadayawan festival is on! I went about town today to feel the atmosphere of festivities. The height of the celebration actually begins to rev up by the middle of this month. Already, the abundance of fruits and flowers is all around. And the prices are about 50% less compared to the prices over a week ago. Think of this. Mangosteen is down from P120-150/kilo to only P35 per kilo. Durian and lanzones also took the plunge. Pomelos are slightly lower. Prices of exotic orchids and other ornamental plants are negotiable.
To my readers here and abroad, accept our invitation to visit Davao City now. It is the time of abundance, of festiveness and renewal of friendships. Welcome!

Spectacular Kadayawan celebration at SM City
IT'S a mix of everything you'll look for in a festival celebration. In response to the City Government's call of support for the festival of festivals, SM City Davao has come up with a week-long Kadayawan Sale and a spectacular line-up of events.
Bannering the festivities are cultural events that depict Davao and Mindanao's indigenous culture through songs, dances and artistic creations.
Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007
Sayaw-Saysay Mindanao will liven up your early trip to SM City on August 17 and 19 at 10 a.m. Five of Davao's best dance groups will showcase dance interpretations of tribal folklore and rituals.

Mindanao Trade Expo follows suit on August 14 to 16 with the latest products and designs that are proudly Mindanao.
Kadayawan's Agro-Trade Fair is now on-going at SM City Grounds featuring the latest flora breed, arrangements and landscapes until August 23.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

I have the feeling that this Jun Ledesma is lurking around here...
and so I thought...:)
Rajah_Soliman August 9th, 2007, 07:28 PM ^^ so voila... let's take this opportunity to air our grievances against the f***ing manila government ... this could also be in line with councilor lavinas "participative governance"
Animo August 9th, 2007, 07:44 PM If history then should it be Oyanguren? He lend the development of Davao (Nueva Vergara). He never was given proper credit because he died as a poor man. Then, we could ask for a sister city campaign for the Basque city. :D
Although, Davao Central Park sound good? Pero murag Central Park Village? Naah naman tay SM Village. I cannot think of a recent personality in the city to have the park to be named after him or her.

Welcome!
Independencia !!! btw i like your hair Tancho ba yan?

Giant billboards still loom in city
By Janice on Aug 9, 2007 in News
BARELY a year after President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered the Department of Public Works and Highways to tear down all illegal billboards in the country, giant billboards still loom along major thoroughfares in wanton violation of regulations.
Joey Luz-Chua, managing director of Western Advertising and Construction Inc. and a member of the Davao Outdoor Advertising Association (DOAA), said Wednesday a large number of billboards in the city that exceed the specified standards dot city streets.
“The billboards located near Bankerohan bridge does not only violate the 25 meter rule, it also poses as hazards to the shanties located underneath it,” Luz-Chua said. The 25-meter rule is a provision in the building code which states that all billboards must not be located within 25 meters from the center lane of the national road. Davao's Corteza downs Souquet, barges into semis vs Hohmann
LEE Vann Corteza, who hails from Davao City, shocked Ralf Souquet of Germany twice on Thursday (Manila time) to arrange a semi-finals clash with Thorsten Hohmann Friday in the winner-take-all US$50,000 17th annual International Challenge of Champions at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, USA.
The reigning All-Japan Open champion and Guinness 9-Ball Tour Grand Championship finalist Corteza routed 2006 World Pool Masters champion Souquet, 5-2, in their first match.
Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007
Corteza demolished Souquet, 2-1, for the twin kill in the quarter-finals of the eight-man field event.
Hohmann will try to avenge his compatriot's loss when he plays the Filipino Corteza. The latter, however, will also avenge the loss of fellow Filipino Ronato Alcano whom Hohmann defeated in the quarters.
Hohmann crushed reigning World 8-Ball and 9-Ball champion Alcano, 5-3 and 5-4 in the first and second match, respectively.
The other semis match will pit Johnny Archer of the USA and Niels Feijen of Holland.
Archer disposed of Taiwan's Yang Ching-shun twice, 5-4, 5-0, while Feijen eliminated John Schmidt of the USA, 5-3, 5-4.
Matches in the International Challenge of Champions are played in two sets with race to five games each set. There is a one-game sudden death tie-breaker in the event of tied sets. (MLSA)

Review : Neo*Davao A city arises! Aug 9, '07 3:29 AM
for everyone
Was doing my regular checking of emails when I found this link in one of the latest mailing list that am currently on, the MindanaoBloggers.com, and I didn’t even know I was on it, just found my inbox one day cluttered with emails from this mailing list. I don’t mind at all, since it has great links to some interesting websites.
Am always fond of visiting sites I haven’t seen before, and some websites can perk my interest at first glance, other times….well, takes a few more reading of their post.
This new blog - the Neo*Davao A City Arises! , totally catch my attention, aside from the title heading which was nicely done, the content was not only informative, but the author delivers the information in a way that is not too boring - straight and concise, not peppered so much with one’s opinion(like mine?). The nice thing about it also is, it’s not cluttered with ads, everything has it’s place.
Neo*Davao tackles about the latest structures being done in the city, news on the IT happenings on the business side, IT entrepreneurship, a few places and events. And pictures! And for me that is important, pictures that is nicely taken makes reading more enjoyable, doesn’t it? It helps the reader digest the information better than letting them visualize on their own. Kind of…a bit of a task, specially when reading about business and imagining….I’d prefer a few pictures. I learned that a lot of buildings is to be constructed not only in the city proper but mind you, also in Samal Island! Really? That is a big step considering with what happened to Ekran resort, condominiums in Samal? It's a good news that people are still interested to invest in Samal. It’s hard to imagine a condo in the island, good thing there were pictures, so you get a little sneak preview. The site also gave me an idea as to where the Information Technology Parks are located in the city, which I have no news already for a few years.
Sometimes reading this things in the newspaper can be a boring task, it’s a good thing blogs became popular, reading business information and news is more interesting this way.
Neo*Davao, is a good site to go for information about the latest news on Davao’s infrastructure and IT happenings.
This is my very first review on a website, I wasn’t counting on doing this as this is something that I think should be left to the pros, but what the heck, this is just a shot in the dark for...

Davao filmmaker Sherad Anthony Sanchez is continuing to reap praises for his much-praised independent film Huling Balyan ng Buhi. After winning awards from Cinema One as one of the best Cinema One Originals film, it is now nominated for multiple categories for the 2007 Gawad Urian given by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino.
The movie earned a nomination as the Best Picture of 2006. Sanchez is also up for the Best Director Award. Other categories in which the film is nominated for are Best Musical Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Screenplay. Among its nominations, I think it has the best chance of getting the Best Musical Score and Best Cinematography accolades. But I hope it gets all the awards it is nominated for, not just because Sanchez is from Davao, but because it is one of the best films I have seen in a while.
Congratulations to Sanchez and to his co-producers Cinema One and Davao-based Alchemy of Vision and Light!!!

I wish both would be in > Callbox and Sutherland. But if i have to choose between the two, i ll go for Sutherland. This major call center in the today's contact center industry would surely attract other major players to invest in Davao unlike Callbox which is unheard of even in the capital (no offense to callbox).
WawaY[625] August 10th, 2007, 08:57 AM baka nga Callbox na ang sa NCCC, kasi nagpapabid na ang sutherland for their facility sa A&M eh..weird naman ata if 2 facilities agad ang itatayo nila diba?

Yes I did. Wala man gud nisugot ang sutherland nga sila mag retrofit sa space. Gusto nila ang NCCC pa ang mugasto. So wala jud na close ang deal. Instead, karon ang Callbox na ang interested mu occupy kay they are amenable to do the retrofitting. Kaso lang, mukhang may isang problema na naman na medyo maliit lang (mostly on non-related amenities na ino-offer sa Callbox) that is delaying the contract proposal. Gusto muna kunin ng central management yung justification from Malls why it should offer these amenities for free. Makatawa nalang jud ka if mahibal-an nimu unsa ning mga amenities na ni na naga pa delay. hehehe

Kaso lang, mukhang may isang problema na naman na medyo maliit lang (mostly on non-related amenities na ino-offer sa Callbox) that is delaying the contract proposal. Gusto muna kunin ng central management yung justification from Malls why it should offer these amenities for free. Makatawa nalang jud ka if mahibal-an nimu unsa ning mga amenities na ni na naga pa delay. hehehe
^^ You mean, a free amenity being offered by NCCC to Callbox? like free coffee? free parking? free mineral water supply? unsa man...thrilling kaau bro..ehehehehehe...pila ka sq m ang ioccuply sa Callbox?

LOL! Free use of billiard tables and a discounted rate on bowling alley use. Kana ra ang nagpadugay sa pag finalize sa proposal. But as it is, kailangan dumaan sa proper process na fino-follow ng corporation.
