The annual Kadayawan Festival opened Wednesday evening to a pared down version of the previous years’ pomp and glitter. This year’s festival is said to be a revival of the original spirit of Thanksgiving held more than 20 years ago.
Acting Mayor Sara Duterte, during the opening of the fest at the Quezon Park, said “…our Kadayawan celebration have somewhat lost track of its indigenous value, it has become too commercialized and became too focused for tourists in an attempt of becoming global.”
She added the past years saw the effort to modernize the festival which has only served to foster the “bastardization of the rich culture and tradition” of the indigenous peoples. This time, she said, the thrust is going “inward,” highlighting the strength of the Davaoeños as “we all reap the harvest sown by our indigenous peoples. The essence of the Kadayawan festival is the generous spirit of the indigenous peoples who embraced and allowed us to partake of the bounty of Davao.”
The Kadayawan was institutionalized in 1986, the euphoric year after the end of the Marcos dictatorship, and was then called Apo Duwaling. This was a contraction of the icons of the city: Mt. Apo, Durian and the Waling-waling. It was renamed Kadayawan two years later to give tribute to the indigenous theme of the festival.
This festival of thanksgiving is not only for the bountiful harvest we are blessed with but also showcases the uniqueness of the indigenous culture of the people who make up the city.
Our sincerity to pay tribute to the indigenous people can still draw tourists who want to experience an authentic celebration unique to us. We are positive that though it may not seem clear at the moment, tourism and being true to the spirit of the Kadayawan can find a common ground.

Sutherland Coming To Davao
According to a news article from a leading news journal for Asia, Sutherland Global Services is one of 3 big name Outsourcing companies that will set up shop in Davao in the near future. It would most probably be housed within the PEZA accredited Damosa IT Park in Lanang. Good news for Davao people especially experienced call center agents from Davao. Bad news for 5 existing call centers in Davao. G-Com Ltd. and Link 2 Support to name a couple.
With the entry of these big call centers in Davao, existing call centers are now wary of widely known phenomena in Manila Call Center circle known as "poaching". Poaching is "light" term for a more appropriate word called "pirating". With the entry of these big cellcenter, there is a great need for them to establish a good foothold and therefore need to acquire services of experienced callcenter people. Most desirably for them, callcenter professionals from other callcenter companies in Davao. This has been a not so desirable practice in Manila callcenter. It has contributed to uncontrollable wage rate increases to get/lure the qualified managers, supervisors and personnel.
According to Davao City Chamber of Commerce chairman Andre Fournier, they are trying to formulate a memorandum of agreement which would promote equitable distribution of callcenter agents to prevent similar occurrences in Davao.

This is actually good! Upcoming huge call centers in Davao will promote healthy competition within the local contact center scenes that existing call centers in davao would have to rethink and reconsider their compensation packages.
That's what happened in Cebu too...4 years ago, yung Sykes pa lang ang andito - their offer was just 8k. Pumasok ang PS which offered a lil better package at that time. Today, salaries and rates were adjusted and increased as a result of this contact center competition.

P50,000 for quick-thinkers
By Anthony S. Allada
Do you want to earn a quick buck? Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday dangled P50,000 to anybody who can tickle his fancy on the new name of the PTA development park. The rules are simple: never use the Duterte name. He recalled how he strongly objected to the naming of Brgy. Duterte in Agdao and the Gov. Duterte Street when they were first proposed but the city council went on and approved the resolutions anyway. "Nisupak gyud ko atong panahona pero wala koy nabuhat (I really objected that time but I couldn’t do anything), Duterte was the presiding officer when the resolution to name the street that cuts across Ilustre St. after his father’s name, Gov. Vicente Duterte. “Pero tungod nga nag-insist man ang mga konsehal nagpapuli ko sa floorleader nga maoy mag-preside ug wala ko miapil sa proceeding (But when the councilors insisted I asked to be replaced by the floorleader and abstain myself from the proceedings)," he said. He said he finds it in bad taste to give them credit for only doing their job as public servants. Duterte said the P71-million PTA grounds would be temporarily opened to the public during the 22nd Kadayawan festival. Through a loan from Land Bank of the Philippines, the city government transformed the five-hectare property into a lush greenery with half-grown trees, endemic plants, flowers and sculptures by artist Kublai Millan. The PTA also boasts of a man-made cascading waterfall, interactive and glass waterfalls, the dancing fountain, children’s playing ground, visitor’s park and the greenhouse gallery. Duterte said that domestic and foreign visitors who intend to visit the 22nd Kadayawan festival, which opened on Wednesday, will surely be fascinated by the new layout of the park. The mayor hinted that he would like the park to be named after national heroes who really fought selflessly the country. (ASA)

Sara takes over as acting city mayor
By Grace L. Plata
SINCE she was elected as a city official, Davao City Vice Mayor Sara Z. Duterte, for the first time, will call a command conference with the police and military Monday next week.
Taking the reins from her father, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who will be on leave from August 13 to 22, the vice mayor will be in charge of the city.
The vice mayor as acting mayor will hold meetings with Philippine National Police and Task Force Davao officials to ensure that security measures and contingency plans are ironed out for the duration of Kadayawan Festival, an event expected to draw local and foreign tourists.
Mayor Duterte said Wednesday he has also instructed Sara to confer with the intelligence community for updates on possible threats to the city's peace and order.
Sara, in turn, said she is prepared to take on the job without feeling in the least bit nervous.
"Andam ko kay mao man na ang atong trabaho (I am ready because this is what we are supposed to do)," the vice mayor said, adding that she is expecting everyone's cooperation especially during the Kadayawan festivities that will demand much from City Government officials and employees who are organizing it this year.

Dad wants China to open consular office in the city
By Grace L. Plata
DAVAO City Councilor Peter T. Laviña is set to propose a resolution requesting the embassy of the People's Republic of China in Manila to open a consular office in Davao City to serve citizens and clients in southern Philippines.
Laviña, chair of the City Council committee on commerce, trade and industry, said this move is in line with the city's policy of promoting international friendship, cooperation, tourism, trade, and investments.
As part of this policy, Davao City is also entering into a sister-city agreement with Nanning City, the designated gateway of China to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).
"There is a growing relation between Davao City and Mindanao and China in terms of cultural exchange, sports, trade, tourism and investments," Laviña said.
He added that Sebastian Angliongto, chair of the Dabaw Kaisa Foundation -- the Filipino-Chinese association in Davao City -- and former chair of the Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco), estimates that there are 35,000 Chinese nationals in Mindanao.
"There are more and more travelers who will need travel documents (visa) in using Davao City as point of origin to travel to China with the available flights from the city to China initially via Macau and Hong Kong, and eventually direct to the mainland," Laviña said.
The suggested venue for the consulate is an idle Chinese government property in the city across Sta Ana Church, which used to be a Consular Office prior to the 1974 decision of the Philippine Government to adopt the One-China Policy recognizing the People's Republic of China and cutting ties with the Republic of China (Taiwan).
Rajah_Soliman August 10th, 2007, 07:38 PM ^^ i have the feeling that they are going to make use of the old ROC consular building fronting sta. ana church... and my instinct tells me that ... they are going to build a high-rise multi-purpose building on that long-idle lot .... magdilang anghel sana ako  nihao!

Durano graces travel, tour expo opening
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
THE 2nd Mindanao Travel and Tour Exposition (MTTE) formally opened Friday at the SM City Davao Entertainment Plaza, graced by Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Ace Durano.
"Mindanao is a very blessed place. This, I realized, as I traveled in Lake Sebu, General Santos City, Surigao, Cagayan de Oro, Koronadal City, and the Davao Region," Durano said in Friday's MTTE opening.
The expo is participated in by various tour and travel companies in Mindanao.
Durano said DOT will continue what it started in 2005 when it chose Davao City to host the Asean Tourism Forum (ATF) in the same year.
"We will not stop until Davao Region will become an international destination," Durano said.
He said DOT has ongoing activities and initiatives to further promote Davao's tourism industry.
"To make sure that we build the momentum, we are currently working with tour operators to expand their product offerings. This year, we have arrangement to open flights from Shanghai to Davao," Durano said, adding that tour operators are very receptive with such move.
He said that they are working on with the idea because Shanghai is considered to be the gateway for Davao, which can be used to bring Russian tourists in the region.
"With the opening of Shanghai to Davao flights, we can also open up flights from Davao to Far Eastern Russia. Shanghai is the gateway to bring Russian tourists," he said.
MTTE will run from August 10 to 12. It is one of the events, highlighting the Kadayawan Festival.

Ledesma: Kapalong not yet a capital
By Jun Ledesma
Sunbursts
KAPALONG, a rich agricultural town in Davao del Norte, is far from becoming the capital of the province yet. It's possible but not this early yet. There are a number of things which will interplay before this dream can be realized. It's a long shot, futuristic but still the possibility is not remote. Let us look at how this will evolve.
Tagum City is fast becoming a highly urbanized city. This means that it can wean itself from the province and will be a distinct political subdivision. Right now it is part of the first congressional district of Davao. If it graduates into a highly urbanized city then it will have its own distinct congressional district. Once it will have a charter of its own, then the province will have to have a new capital. I am not very keen of how this comes about, but am looking at the relation of Davao City to Davao del Sur. Being highly urbanized with a charter of its own, Davao City had been cut from the umbilical cord of the province. As a consequence thereof
Digos became the capital of Davao del Sur. Kapalong enjoys better preference than Panabo City because of its location. If Tagum City eventually spins out of Davao del Norte, the centrally located town will be Kapalong.
With the eventual opening of the Davao-Bukidnon highway, Kapalong will be the new growth center of the province and that will make the town more dynamic in terms of development of trade and commerce.
As I said this is futuristic but not actually remote in the sense that all the aspects that I have cited here are not impossible to accomplish. In fact the political and economic evolutions are actually happening now. The major road network in the province including that of the Davao-Bukidnon artery is either accomplished or presently being implemented, which means that within this decade we might actually see a new capital town for Davao del Norte.
This plan is politically correct since the transfer of the capital to another town will spearhead a new economic activity. I will not fault the provincial leadership if it pursues this objective. Governor Dolfo del Rosario looks at this in his savvy corporate management of the province. In this same way, Tagum City Mayor Rey "CO" Uy is steering the city into becoming an urbanized metropolis. The emergence of new growth centers in the province augurs well for Tagum. There is so much dynamism between these two political leaders that we will see the transformation in the province going faster than what some people can possibly imagine.

Paradise Found

Most vacationers in search of the perfect getaway settle for the simple pleasures—white-sand beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters, clean and comfortable cottages, good food and refreshing tropical drinks, and warm smiles from the local people. Others with a more adventurous streak look out for what challenging activities a vacation spot has on offer—mountain climbing, trekking, scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing, among others.
Whether it’s a relaxed and laidback getaway or a physical and adrenalin-pumping expedition, there is something for everyone among the country’s many holiday destinations. In Mindanao, there is one place that offers the best of both worlds—the Island Garden City of Samal.
Tracking Samal
The Island Garden City of Samal—that is its official name—is a third-class city located in the province of Davao del Norte in Southern Mindanao. It has a total land area of 30,130 hectares and a coastline that stretches 116 kilometers. It consists of nine separate islands, with Samal Island being the largest.
From Manila, the flight to Davao City—the closest and most convenient access point to Samal Island—takes just an hour and a half. Once in Davao, you can choose from four ports from which to cross to the island, depending on your destination and purpose.
From one of the takeoff ports in Davao City, a motorized banca can take you to the world-class Barcelo Pearl Farm Resort...
or to Canibad’s pristine beach
There are three wharfs along Sasa Road where passengers who are headed for particular beach resorts in the island, as well as those who are bringing their vehicles along for the ferry ride, begin their journey. The other wharf, in Sta. Ana Street, is just 15 minutes away from the Sasa ports. This is where divers converge, and there are several pump boats docked at the wharf that transport passengers to Talikud Island, off the southwest coast of Samal.
A 10-minute motorized banca ride, about P10–P20 per person, from one of the takeoff ports in Davao City will bring visitors to such lovely vacation spots in Samal as the Barcelo Pearl Farm Resort, Paradise Island Beach Resort, and the Bluewaters Beach Resort, to name a few. It is also possible to take a banca further around the island to more pristine beaches and secret hideaways, such as the amazing Chemas by the Sea and Canibad. The best way to do this is to negotiate with a boat operator for a four-hour private tour around the island.
Another way of doing the crossing from Davao to Samal Island is by ferry. The large ferry can accommodate two buses and half a dozen vehicles, while motorcycles and bicycles fill the extra spaces on the side. Fifteen minutes later, you can drive off the ferry at the Babak Port and cruise your way to Peñaplata, the island’s city proper.
A land tour of Samal has its advantages, providing a closer look at the island’s life that isn’t possible on a boat tour and by island hopping. All beach resorts are accessible by land, and private parking areas are available, providing security and convenience to car-riding visitors who plan to stay overnight.
One-Stop Getaway
Water sports aficionados have a wide range of activities to choose from in the island
As reflected in its name, Samal is both an island and a city. The vision for the city is to become an “urban center within a rural setting” by 2011, achieving economic sufficiency through the main drivers of Samal’s economy—tourism and agri-fishery. Agriculture also plays an important role in Samal’s economic activity. About 90% of the land is devoted to coconut and corn production, but most of the city’s produce are just enough for local consumption. Perfect gift souvenirs for women are South Sea pearls of varying colors, which are practically sold everywhere and at different prices to suit one’s budget.
Samal also attracts sports buffs, backpackers, and weekend warriors like a magnet. Every weekend, you will see mountain bikers hitting the paved and dirt roads of Samal’s MTBike trail. Hikers are rewarded with the beauty of the island’s hidden caves, natural waterfalls, and scenic mountains. Putting Bato is the highest mountain peak in the island, towering 1,346 feet above sea level. Adventurers who reach the moun-tain’s summit are treated to a panoramic view of Samal and the entire Davao Gulf.
Water sports aficionados have a wide range of activities to choose from in the island, the most popular being snorkeling and scuba diving. There are about 23 popular dive sites surrounding the island, each with its own unique characteristics. Some spots are ideal for discovery diving, but many of the sites are suited for those looking for open-water fun dives and for advanced and extreme-level dives. A famous dive site is the Pearl Farm Wrecks, just 60 meters from the Pearl Farm Beach Resort in Kaputian, Samal. Two sunken World War II Japanese vessels can be found just 130 feet from the water’s surface.
Sunset at the Chemas by the Sea resort in Samal Island
The other aqua sports one can enjoy in Samal include windsurfing, jetskiing, waterskiing, kayaking, and the kids’ favorite, banana boat rides.
For travelers who want to add an educational dimension to their trip, a visit to the Monfort Conservation Park in Babak, the home of the famous Bat Sanctuary, is a must. For a P20 fee, visitors get interesting insights about bats and their importance in the ecosystem, and get to visit a bat cave where scores of fruit-eating bats sleep during the day.
Indeed, the Island Garden City of Samal has everything that one could wish for in a tropical paradise. It is a dream destination that is sure to revitalize a stressed mind and body, as well as deliver a wonderful bonding experience for families and friends.

jhunix August 10th, 2007, 08:31 PM DOT vows continuing Davao promotions
by Prix D Banzon
Davao City (11 August) -- Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Joseph Ace Durano vowed not to stop promoting Davao not until it becomes an international destination of the country.
Durano together with Secretary Jesus Dureza, President Adviser on the Peace Process led the opening ceremony of the Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo (MTTE) 07 held at the SM City Entertainment Plaza in Davao City.
The MTTE 07 is one of the highlights of the Kadayawan Festivities that Davao City celebrates every August each year.
Durano said they will continue what they have started in 2005 when the city hosted the international tourism event, Asean Tourism Forum where Davao City was formally introduced among key players of the industry in the world as a must-visit city and as the country's favored tourism destination.
He said to complement what had been started, talks are on going for new routes and they are looking at Shanghai-Davao route.
He said the Shanghai-Cebu route had been working very strongly and in fact Shanghai has become a gateway to high spending Russian tourists.
"Because of the access route via Shanghai we already are getting tourists from countries like Russia and these visitors are big spender," he said.
In fact he said a couple from that country came to Cebu through a chartered plane and had the aircraft wait for them while they covered all the destinations in Cebu, Bohol and Boracay for two weeks.
He said Davao has a niche market because it has unique destinations.
In support of the destinations the DOT he said will help in the rehabilitation of the Philippine Eagle Center in Malago, Calinan this city.
He said they will also help develop the Mt. Apo Eco Tourism Park and when fully developed will become an attraction, the mountain being the highest peak of the country.
Meanwhile MTTE coordinator Marissa Te Eng Fo said that participating are 62 exhibitors from Davao and Mindanao with some Manila based operators with one conducting jobs fair for a seven-star hotel in Qatar with 1,000 positions to be filed up.
She also said that China tour operator will come today (August 11) for buying and selling of products. (PIA XI)

Davao dad calls for reappointment of districts
by Prix D Banzon
Davao City (11 August) -- A local government legislator in Davao City has called for the redistricting or "reappointment" of the whole country's legislative districts following the on-going census of population.
First district Councilor Peter Laviña in his privilege speech at the Davao City Council said the Constitution provides the reappointment within three years following the census.
He said "number would speak clearly rather than partisan interests" in creating new congressional districts if this provision is followed.
He said it is difficult to ask congress for the creation of new districts even as he said that exceptional cases were those of "rider provisions" in the creation of new provinces like in the case of Compostela Valley and cities like Makati.
Lavina urges the National Statistics Office and Congress to do their jobs in following the constitutional provision in Paragraph 4, Section 5 of Article VI, which called for the reappointment of legislative districts.
One legislative district is composed of at least a population of 250,000.
He said if there were a reappointment, Davao City with a population of close to 1.4 million would be entitled to at least five and not the current three districts. (PIA) [top]

Talaingod-Bukidnon road underway
by RG Alama
Davao City (11 August) -- The continuation of the Talaingod-Bukidnon road is underway as the opening of the remaining 40 kilometers which would finally connect the Talaingod town to San Fernando Municipality in Bukidnon has been started.
According to Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario, the DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways) has allocated for 2007 a budget of P100-million for the road. By 2008, a budget appropriation of P500 million has been proposed for the completion of the artery seen to develop the far-flung areas of the two provinces.
Del Rosario said that only 30 kilometers remain before the boundary will be opened. He said that 10 kilometers have already been concreted. The total road network has a distance of about 50 kilometers.
The work was started in 2004, however under the previous term of former Governor Gelacio Gementiza, New People's Army guerillas burned road construction equipment and seized the construction crew as hostages, stalling the project which was soon abandoned.
Del Rosario said the road network is part of the Mega-Region development plan of the President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo which is re-echoed by her 8 by 08 agenda. (PIA XI) [top]

Di ba these are perks (for the agents) supposed to be coming from the call center? During my call centre stint, I had fun playinhg billiards while on breaks, and others kill time by playing was games and what not. Coffee, tea and mineral water were free-flowing.
Precisely why central management is questioning the decision of mall management. If indeed gusto jud sa agents makadula for free, bayaran sa call center ang amenities, then the agents can play for free. :)

davaoeagle August 11th, 2007, 12:23 AM Precisely why central management is questioning the decision of mall management. If indeed gusto jud sa agents makadula for free, bayaran sa call center ang amenities, then the agents can play for free. :)
Central management meaning Sutherland or NCCC?
Yeah, that's pretty much more like it. If the prospective rentor (call centre) does not want to make the same amenities available for its workers then they should talk NCCC into letting them use the mall service for a fee. Call centre job is stressful to some degree and it's incumbent upon the operator to provide "distressing amenities" to the agents.
WawaY[625] August 11th, 2007, 12:30 AM di naman mislead, kasi malapit nga naman sa NCCC Mall, pinalitan lang ng across a mall in ma-a kasi baka nagrekalmo ang SM na na advertise ang NCCC Mall sa SM
WawaY[625] August 11th, 2007, 12:32 AM The proposed residential subdivision project is conveniently located within the heart of Davao City. Thus, boast of its proximity to malls (only 100 meters away from NCCC Mall & approximately 500 meters away from SM City Davao), commercial establishments, banks, financial institutions, schools (Ateneo de Davao University), churches and hospitals (Davao Doctors Medical Center).
i highly doubt this, Tulip drive alone is about 1 km long..tapos part ra na sa route between le jardin and SM
davaoeagle August 11th, 2007, 12:33 AM ^^
uh okey got your drift. Kala ko kasi i mislead nila na malapit as in infront gyud sa mall ang development just to drive sales. Sorry!
davaoeagle August 11th, 2007, 12:34 AM ;14735668']i highly doubt this, Tulip drive alone is about 1 km long..tapos part ra na sa route between le jardin and SM
I shook my head reading that line too. "Sabihiin mo yan sa lelong mo" as the 70s ditty goes.
Peng Hok August 11th, 2007, 12:37 AM ^^ The central management of NCCC is questioning the decision of the mall management of NCCC in giving the amenities for free to Callbox. If Callbox indeed wants to have a recreational venue for its agents, then it must pay NCCC the appropriate amount for the use of the entertainment facilities. Hindi naman kailangan ang agents ang magbabayad for the facilities, pero not necessarily din at the expense of NCCC diba?
Central management oversees the management of individual corporations belonging to the NCCC Group (one of which is the Malls, Inc. forging the deal with Callbox).
Peng Hok August 11th, 2007, 12:41 AM ^^ My apologies D.E. kung malabo. Hehehe.
Sutherland, though, is definitely out (confirmed na to teej). Callbox is under negotiation pa dahil nga dito sa issue ng free entertainment amenities.
davaoeagle August 11th, 2007, 12:45 AM ^^
No worries Peng. It's crystal clear now. So Waway is right, Sutherland opted for A & M instead.
Peng Hok August 11th, 2007, 12:49 AM ^^ I believe so too. There you go! You finally found the shortest way to my name! Hahaha!
davaoeagle August 11th, 2007, 12:53 AM ^^
I'm not even comf'table with it. It sounds something else when you say it twice.. :jk:
Seriously, Sutherland can also look into Damosa IT Park which now has another cluster of buildings intended for IT locators. The urgency to open the business soon in Davao might negate this possibility and so the empty A & M building is still a better option.
Peng Hok August 11th, 2007, 01:56 AM ^^ LOL!
Bisag asa, as long as all the benefit will redound to Davao, payts na kaayo!
Hopefully, all these nice developments in the IT industry in Davao will trigger another construction boom (the last being halted by the Asian financial crisis). May connection ba?
Peng Hok August 11th, 2007, 02:22 AM I have read good news about some 18 and 20 storey buildings soon to be built in CDO. Not for anything else, pero sana makarinig rin tayo ng ganong klaseng balita dito sa Davao soon. :)

DOT puts up visitors' lounge at Eagle camp
Written by Walter I. Balane/MindaNews
Saturday, 11 August 2007 08 22 35
DAVAO CITY (MIndaNews / August 10) - A new, more visitor-friendly lounge will rise at the Philippine Eagle Center this year, to help attract more visitors and raise consciousness on the conservation effort to save the Philippine Eagle. The Department of Tourism has promised P5 million to construct it and Secretary Joseph Ace Durano has urged tourism operators attending the opening ceremonies of the Second Mindanao Travel Exposition Thursday to include the eagle conservation camp among their destinations.
The Philippine Eagle Foundation will be the second institution to receive a DOT infrastructure funding, Durano told MindaNews.
Durano said the eight-month construction will start by September. PEC volunteer architect Francis Hidalgo designed the new lounge that Durano described as "modern and close to nature."
The PEF attracts 100,000 visitors every year, but ticket sales amount to only P3 million a year compared to the P20 million that it spends on operational cost, including its research component, according to Tatit Quiblat, PEF communication officer. For the past 20 years, the PEF has been dependent on grants and donations.
The PEF will mark its 20th year and hopes that the proposed building will replace the center's dilapidated and old lounge. The lounge houses the PEF’s existing services to visitors.
Durano said that raising public awareness on the conservation effort of the PEF “is crucial in the actual effort for environmental conservation”. The Philippine Eagle, one of the largest eagles in the world, is endemic to the Philippines and is the top predator in the Philippine rainforest.
Current eagle population is estimated at only about 1,000, blamed mostly on rapid deforestation. (Walter I. Balane / MindaNews)

DOT assists Philippine Eagle Center
by Prix D Banzon
Davao City (11 August) -- The Department of Tourism (DOT) committed to assist in the rehabilitation of the Philippine Eagle Foundation Center (PEFC) where it turned over P5 million as a start-up fund for the center's improvement.
DOT Secretary Joseph Ace Durano made the announcement during the opening of the Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo 2007 at SM City Davao Entertainment Plaza.
He said with the influx of tourists happening in our country there is a need to look at the supply side.
He said the DOT is helping develop the products and the tourism department considered the PEFC a unique destination of Davao.
The center houses endangered Philippine Eagle and the Foundation which is a private, non-stock, non-profit organization initiated the protection of the bird and using the eagle as its flagship for conservation it has been able to undertake direct actions that benefit the species, other wildlife and the people who share its rainforest and habitat with the eagle.
Along with the rehabilitation of the PEFC that DOT supports is the development of the Mt. Apo eco-tourism park.
Durano said they had been talking with governors and mayors of provinces and municipalities surrounding Mt. Apo to take concrete steps in the development of eco-tourism as this will attract tourists and at the same time initiate economic activities in the area. (PIA XI) [top]

(ASA)

It is almost a standard in all lease contracts kasi that Lessees are responsible for retrofittings in the leased premises. I believe that the proposed deal with Callbox is not an exception to this. But since Callbox is no ordinary lessee as well, kaya nasali sa proposal yung free entertainment amenities. Callbox does not have any more issues with the retrofitting (unlike Sutherland), kasi amenable naman sila doon. And I believe that with the kind of eagerness that Callbox is showing in getting the NCCC IT Pavilion, they would not mind the free enetertainment amenities being slashed from the contract proposal. I hope I am not wrong with this though. :)

Well a 120 storey could be a sprawling development rather than a vertical construction. Lam mo naman sa Davao, palaparan ng area ang construction at hindi pataasan ng building.

Here’s SM City Davao and its vicinity. From the look at it, another commercial and business district is on the rise. Let me call it as The SM City Business Complex (this is not its official name though). The area is consist of SM City Davao, the upcoming SM City Convention and IT Center/Park, existing commercial strip with lowrise buildings, and the ongoing construction of ECO 4000 Condominiums (two five storeys condominium buildings.). This shot from space (provided by google earth) was taken sometime around 2003. The commercial strip is not yet visible same as with the on going construction of the ECO 4000 Condominiums.

^^ Mr Sonny Labao, chairperson of the Federation of Philippine Institute of Architects (DAVAO) confirmed this during the 5th Mindanao Design and Construction Fair last June 29 to July 1 at SM CITY DAVAO....
Davao’s construction industry enjoys robust growth
Sunday, July 8th, 2007
The construction industry in Mindanao is experiencing robust growth with more residential houses and commercial buildings being constructed.
Federation of Philippine Institute of Architects (FPIA) chair Sonny Labao said the industry is better this year than last year with an estimated 15 million houses built in Mindanao alone.
He also said three 10-story commercial buildings are going to be built somewhere in Davao City. However, Labao declined to divulge the details of the projects to avoid preempting them, hinting only that one of them is a hotel.
On the other hand, FPIA committee head architect Romy Birrey said Mindanao is second only to Metro Manila in terms of processing building permits, indicating robust movement in the construction industry.
He attributed this upward trend to the city’s peace and order stability.
“Because of the city’s peace and order, everybody is coming back,” he said.
Birrey said the flooding of tourists from Asian countries such as South Korea and Japan and the non-availability of vacant apartments as well as fully booked hotels signal the city’ economic growth.
Meanwhile, City administrator Wendel Avisado said the city’s construction industry is “a sellers market.”
He said of the city’s P1.5 billion acquired income last year, a considerable amount was contributed by the construction industry.

How I wish our Davao leaders could learn as well from Germany's example.... This article is dedicated to Coucilor pila baga (or was it gaba... honestly, i forgot her name  )
Iloilo City mayor cites Germany’s decentralization
ILOILO CITY — The successful German experience in decentralization is expected to guide this city in its quest for more autonomy and responsibility to local government units.
Arriving from a group study tour in Germany, City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said they studied the different German decentralization approaches in the fields of economic development policy, and on fiscal and environment protection matters.
The study tour was held on June 21-29, 2007 and participated in by selected Philippine officials upon the invitation of the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), one of the international partners of the city in its solid waste management program.
The Philippine delegation also visited the University of Cologne which plays an important role in the technological and economic development of the Republic of Germany.
They also went to Koln where they discussed Economic Development Policy of a Federal State and/or City, as well as discussions on the role of the private sector in boosting local economic development.
The second stop is Berlin for a study on culture and a dialogue on Federalism in the Federal Republic, Fiscal Equalization Scheme Bund-Land and Economic Promotion.
The delegation also visited Bundesrat or the Federal Council of Germany for an overview of the federal set-up and to get a better understanding of the functions of the Federal Assembly in Germany.
