Ocampo: Madayaw Dabaw!
By Tek Ocampo
News room

DURING my stint with GMA Manila, a lot of people were asking me what it's like to live in Davao City. I just simply answered them: It's the best place in the world. It is indeed, "the land of promise" so to speak. I've been to the States, Australia and some parts of the country but there's no place like Davao. You want to know why?

One, it's one of the cleanest and the most livable city in Asia. The local government means business in protecting the natural environment in the city.

Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007

Despite thousands of settlers living along the Davao River and the coastal areas in the city, the local government was able to maintain the balance of ecology within the 244,000-hectare land area of Davao. Fresh water fishes continue to flourish in Davao River.

Two, the food is great and affordable. Just more than a hundred kilometers away from General Santos City, fresh tuna, tons of it, makes its way to Davao everyday. Part of it is being exported abroad. And, some are shipped to Manila and different parts of the country. That is why, you can eat all the tuna you want for a fraction of a price compared to Manila. Fruits! Wow! Mango, pineapple, banana, lanzones, mangosteen, pomelo, papaya, guyabano, avocado and the famous durian. Name them, we have them all in abundance!

Three, there are numerous tourist spots to visit. To name a few - the Pearl Farm, Malagos Garden, Eden Nature Park, GAP, Crocodile farm, The Infant Jesus of Prague Shrine at Matina Hills, and the Philippine Eagle Nature Center. The good news is, you don't have to spend a lot of money to visit these places. And would you believe, they are just located within the city? Pearl farm and close to hundred of other beach resorts are located in the Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte, but they're just within 45 minutes drive from the city by boat. So, if you want a luxurious getaway with your family or friends, Davao is the place to be.

Four, you can use your cell phone within the busy sidewalks of Davao without having to worry if someone will snatch it from you. Maintaining peace and order in Davao city has always been the main concern of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte who was dubbed by Time magazine as "The Punisher." The 911 emergency response center is one of the flagship projects of the city mayor. It is one of the only three in the world, the two being in the United States and Canada. The mobile patrols of 911 are strategically positioned in crime prone areas in Davao to achieve maximum response time. The current response time is estimated 5 minutes from the time the call was placed.

Five, no traffic and no stressful driving within city limits. Even if one part of Governor Generoso bridge in Bankerohan is still under repair, the traffic management center still manages to maintain the flow of traffic smooth. A 20-minute traffic standstill is already annoying for most motorists in Davao.
Though the city's modern traffic signalization systems are still not fully operational, during a normal but busy day, traveling on a 10-kilometer stretch will take you about 15-20 minutes traveling time.

Six, the local government of Davao was the first city to strictly implement a "no smoking" law or the anti-smoking ordinance of Davao. If you are caught smoking in public areas such as malls, restaurants, bars, and other public places, you can be fined and probably arrested and jailed. Davao is also one of the first cities in the Philippines to ban the use of pyrotechnic on all occasions to include Christmas, New Year and Chinese News Year. If you are caught violating such law, you will be arrested and put to jail. Since the city banned the use of pyrotechnic in 2001, Davao has maintained its zero casualty in fire cracker related accidents.

Seven, aside from being known as having one of the best drinking water in the world, the people of Davao are enjoying a 24-hour water supply.

Because of strong pressure, sometimes it can damage your pipeline.
Eight, the people are kind and very hospitable.

Nine, Davao City is the best place to invest in tourism, agriculture and various other types of business ventures. The Mindanao Business Council which is based in Davao now holds the chairmanship for the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area. Banana, pineapple and poultry are among the many export products that bring in more revenue for the city. The Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Incorporated is actively participating in making sure that Davao as an investment capital in Mindanao will continue to attract more businessmen. With the help of the City Council of Davao, The Chinese Chamber of Commerce has agreed to create our very own China Town.

Ten, Davao City is typhoon-free! The last recorded typhoon that hit Davao del Sur was in 1970. The typhoon particularly hit Malita, Davao del Sur which is more than a hundred kilometers away from Davao city.

I can tell you hundreds of reasons why I truly love Davao, but the best way to know about it is experiencing it yourself. So when you're in Davao, forget your problems, enjoy the beauty and abundance of our city. Happy Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival!

Do stores there still do surcharge for using credits cards? Has the issue been resolved yet? Rajah asked me this question lately and all I could tell him is that the issue has been raised to DTI but dunno what transpired after. Any dev't on this?

So far sa akong experience bro, wala nay surcharge tanan, matagal nang na resolve ang issue. In fact halos lahat ng transactions ko by cc na. Minsan kahit 100 pesos lang babayaran ko kini-CC ko na. sayang kasi ang Miles...

In Search of Metropolitan Definitions:

Lessons From Metro Davao

Ruben G. Mercado1

1. Introduction

Defining a metropolis should not be difficult, at least in the theoretical sense. Angotti (1993) in writing a modern day perspective on metropolitanization in the world has suggested a general rule-of- thumb in defining a metropolis or at least distinguishing it from a city. In the context of the twentieth century, the term metropolis refers to large urban settlements, usually crossing local jurisdictional boundaries, with at least one million population. The term city, on the other hand, refers to medium-sized settlement between 100,000 and one million population. Following this categorization, therefore, settlements under 100,00 population are considered rural. Admittedly, there is broadness in the definition. However, the definition comes very handy and useful in making broad categorization of urban settlements.

Another criterion has also evolved from the experience of other so-called metropolises in the country in determining whether an area can be classified as a metropolis beyond urbanization measure and population size, i.e., that the area is undertaking metropolitan functions or activities. These activities refer to those which are distinctly urban in nature and dimension and usually, when one or more political jurisdictions are involved, would require an institutional mechanism to undertake them. This criterion helps avoid a loose usage of the term metropolis only on the basis of population or the amalgamation of contiguous political units. The term metropolitan arrangement becomes more applicable to any interlocal cooperation between city/ies and municipalities which do not meet the population and largely urban criteria but are performing expanded urban service functions.

The case of Davao presents some major practical definitional dilemma. Reference to Metro Davao has taken on new meanings in recent years. What is being referred to by the term Metro Davao? Is it Davao City or is it beyond the city’s political and administrative jurisdiction? How valid and meaningful are these definitions?

This paper attempts to describe three emerging operational definitions of Metro Davao in the way people in Davao or outside of it view such concept. The aim is not only to present the definitional dilemma at hand but more importantly to draw insights or lessons on the importance of definitions beyond the terminological exercise.

2. The Three Definitional Models of Metro Davao

2.1 Model 1: Davao City

Based on the basic definition of a metropolis, Davao City may in itself be considered a metropolis. In 1995, Davao City registered a population of a little over one million from about 850,000 in 1990 (Table 1). Growth rate has remained high since the eighties posting 3.39 percent growth from the period 1990-1995. A large percentage of its total population reside in areas classified as urban. However, it should be noted that the urban land area is only less than two percent of the total land size. Thus, it is necessary to distinguish density in the whole city and density in the urban areas in the city in order to appreciate the state of its urban geography. One needs to understand also that Davao City is, land-wise, a predominantly agricultural and forest area. Table 2 presents the land use pattern in Davao City in 1994 showing that the built-up area (depicting urban area) comprise only less than six percent of the total land area of the city.

some parts omitted…

3. Conclusion

The above analysis presented the three emerging definitions of Metro Davao and evaluated the same based on the simple criteria for accurately defining settlements as metropolis: a largely urban settlement with a population of at least a million and usually extending beyond political jurisdictions. As have been articulated in the analysis, from among the three references to Metro Davao, Metro Davao as defined as the whole area of Davao City is the definitional model that meets such criteria. The second model (Davao City plus neighboring municipalities) would also qualify but is still considered prospective or just a potential possibility in view of the absence of immediate inter-urban concerns at the present time. Also, a new finding is that, applying the theoretical distinction between a city and a metropolis, Davao City has graduated from being a city and has become a full-fledge metropolis in 1995. Thus, Davao City can already be classified as a metropolitan city.

Given the high growth in population being experienced not only in Davao City but in all of the Davao provinces especially in the urban areas, Gaffud (1997) has rightly pointed out, that the DIDP can be “an initial vehicle in the promotion of cross-border management of urban services”. Perhaps, in particular, there might also be a need to develop a sub-component of the program for Metro Davao (i.e. Davao City) concerns. In view of its current and future strategic role as the international trade center and gateway to the Southern Pacific Rim particularly in the BIMP-EAGA, a distinct program must be crafted to develop Metro Davao along the concept of a well-functioning and competitive metropolis. It might be useful to develop a separate Metro Davao Development Master Plan (Davao City concept) but anchored on the framework and broad strategies of the DIDP.

The recent transformation of Davao City into a metropolis should not be seen only as an urban redefinition. More importantly, it implies a need to shift the management paradigm of the city towards a broader approach to urban management. That is, going beyond the traditional city management towards metropolitan planning and management. The development plan for the new metropolis must be able to provide a 7 contemporary urban-management system (organisations, human resources, operational systems and approaches) that will aid this transition process.

Goys, kailangan ba ng change of venue for amul-amul? Kasi it has been in the news already that the Park's grand opening tomorrow has been suspended to December na. Atty. Avisado reasons that some attractions (particularly the dancing fountain) are not yet in place. Also, while entrance to the Park is for free, he cites that the use of comfort rooms shall be minimally charged for maintenance. For this, the City Government has yet to source a maintenance agency to do the job, thereby justifying the postponement of the opening. However, if there is any consolation, the opening in December will really be GRAND!

Ah parang yan yung EPS (direct debit from the ATM Card). Yup! The system is proliferating, kahit saan meron na. Although, BPI pa lang alam ko meron nyan. I am an EPS user myself. It is very convenient. And no, walang surcharge to on the part of the customer. It is good as cash eh. Ang bilis nga mag debit, almost real time!

Kadayawan Moon

(We yield today’s editorial page to this poignant and evocative poem on the Kadayawan by Antonio T. Uy, PNRC. - Editors)

Kadayawan Moon

As the full Kadayawan moon Breaks through the clouds And the lone lovely vinta Slowly glides across the seas

Then my ever lovely Davao Is haunting me with green verdures On her hills and the many valleys Calling me back for Kadayawan

Sweet memories that lingers long Of Davao of my heart a lovely moon That shines from above and a vinta That glides across the wide seas

Now where on earth is a moon so bright Lovely Davao it is a land of my heart Under its golden light you will delight To roam the meadows with a sweetheart

And once again my delight to be back To Davao for another wonderful night Give me nothing but the bright night With Kadayawan moon hanging above

However, if there is any consolation, the opening in December will really be GRAND!

ahh :D yay!!!

BPI, BDO & LBP share the same network (expressnet & eps-express payment system). instead na magpila sa machine i use my LBP payroll ATM card sa grocery & dept stores.

Samra Nuh: Kadayawan's Gem
By Grace L. Plata

A DAUGHTER of Arabic teachers, it's not surprising for Samra Nuh to end up in the teaching profession.

By answering the judges' questions in English, Bisaya, and K'lagan, there was no doubt that this K'lagan lass from Waan would best seven other candidates for this year's Hiyas ng Kadayawan title.

Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007

Nuh, 21, graduated with a bachelor's degree in secondary education from the Ateneo de Davao University.

The eldest daughter in a brood of four, Nuh grew up in a loving family who nicknamed her "Taya" -- a term that means "beloved," an equivalent to the Visayan term "langga."

As a child, Nuh always strived for excellence. A consistent honor student, she is also an awarded musician.

Nuh's group, the Waan K'lagan Ensemble, won three times in a row in the Namcya Music Festival from 1996 to 1998. She plays the kulintang and is handy with the gong and drums.

Nuh went to college through a scholarship grant, which she said was for "financially disadvantaged yet intelligent members of the cultural minority" -- a description, she says, that fits her well.

Going to school in a Catholic university, Nuh said she never experienced discrimination in any way even when she can be singled out as a Muslim as she constantly wears the "tundong," the veil worn by Muslim women.

"Ang mga classmates ko, open sila and even asks questions. On the part of my teachers, I can feel that they respect what I believe in. It's wonderful too because I get to learn and understand the Christian faith," Nuh said.

In college, Nuh was able to stay in the honor's list while getting involved in various extra curricular activities.

"Right from the start, goal ko na talaga to graduate with honors. It is like a gift to my parents especially to my mom who has always been there for me whether or not I needed her," Nuh said.

Nuh said college proved to be harder than she expected. Adding to that, she had to take the long distance trip to Waan and back all through the four years in college.

"Mahirap din talaga kasi (its very difficult actually) rain or shine kailangan sumakay sa motor galing Waan hanggang sa (from Waan to) terminal ng jeep papuntang city proper. That's done wearing a white uniform and skirt pa," Nuh recalled.

After graduating with a cum laude distinction, Nuh took and passed the Licensure Exams for Teachers with flying colors. She is currently teaching in a private school in Indangan run by Baptist missionaries.

According to fellow teachers, Nuh is a perfectionist whose passion for teaching mirrors that of her parents.

"I am really happy with what I am doing although I would want to pursue masters’ degree pa. I am still looking for another scholarship grant," Nuh said.

Never expecting she would represent her tribe in the "Hiyas" pageant, Nuh, whose biggest insecurity is her height -- or lack of it -- initially refused.

"Ayoko sana kasi (I don’t supposedly want to because) I do not feel I deserve it. Sabi ko sa kanila maghanap ng iba pero kung wala na talaga silang mahanap, ako na lang (I told them to look for somebody else but if they can’t find someone, I prefer to) as last option," Nuh said. A remark, which is unfit for somebody who is like her tribe's "golden girl."

"It is really a good venue for interaction," Nuh said of the pageant.

Now that she has been crowned as the festival's gem, Nuh said she would like to use the opportunity to help her people.

If a genie gave her three wishes, Nuh said she'd like to have a school where history and culture of different tribes are taught.

"Non-formal education lang. It's because I'd like the children to know where they came from," Nuh said.

As her second wish, Nuh said she'd like to put up a program called "K'lagan for a cause," which will gather her people and come up with projects that will benefit the community.

Last but not the least, Nuh wishes to gather indigenous people who have become professionals in order to pool resources that will help other indigenous people.

"Kulang talaga ang opportunities for indigenous people especially when it comes to education and jobs. That is why I'd really like to do something that will uplift their way of life," Nuh said.

"Taya," who considers herself a modern person, said she is thankful to have been born in the this day and age which have afforded her the chance to be educated, pursue her dreams and become a "gem" to represent the spirit of her people.

City's newest park opens
By Grace L. Plata
DAVAO City's newest park, which has yet to be named, was officially opened Friday in time for the Kadayawan festivities that will be concluded Sunday.

With its opening, a competition to let Dabawenyos help in naming the park was also launched.

Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007

This after Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte promised to give P50,000 to anyone who can come up with the best name for the newly constructed theme park at the former PTA grounds.

Duterte earlier said he would like Dabawenyos to get involved in choosing the name for the park so it would become a citywide effort.

For now, the new park is simply called as "The Park," but Duterte said he wants a more suitable name for the multi-million theme park that will surely become the next landmark in the city.

Duterte said to come up with the appropriate name for the park is for one to trace its history.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

"Taya," who considers herself a modern person, said she is thankful to have been born in the this day and age which have afforded her the chance to be educated, pursue her dreams and become a "gem" to represent the spirit of her people.

if sensorised, more with green disc ang road nga denser ang vehicle. kadyot lang ang greenlight time kung less or wala vehicle standing sa stopline

Tinuod gyud...... at the expense of the other well deserving and strategically/economically important mindanao cities ....

btw, here's an article I found in the "Philippines:11th richest in Asia" thread... posted by rene ybardolaza ..

The Philippines' economy
The Jeepney economy revs up

Aug 16th 2007 | MANILA
From The Economist print edition
Now the country needs to make the most of its luck

WHAT distinguishes Manila from other South-East Asian capitals is the ubiquitous Jeepney, the loud rickety bus used by the city's poorer inhabitants. Once modified American Jeeps, nowadays most Jeepneys are cobbled together from second-hand Japanese lorries. They have become a metaphor for the Philippine economy: inefficient and easily overtaken.

In the 1970s the Philippines was richer than its neighbours. Yet while it chugged along at growth rates of around 2%, other countries stepped on the gas: it was passed by Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and, more recently, by China. A former American colony, it could have made more of its cultural affinities with the United States, including the widespread use of English. The incompetent and crooked rule of Ferdinand Marcos from 1965 to 1986 bears some of the blame for its failure to do so. A sluggish economy combined with a fast-growing population has forced some 8m Filipinos—equivalent to almost a tenth of the resident population—to seek jobs abroad.

The current president, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, an economist, aspires to see her country join the ranks of the rich world by 2020. Yet her six years in office have been marked by political instability, and progress on reforms has been slow. However, things are looking up. The economy has grown by at least 5% in each of the past three years, for the first time since the 1970s. In the first quarter of this year, growth was 6.9%, year-on-year. Soaring remittances from Filipinos overseas help. Last year they added up to $12.8 billion, equivalent to 11% of GDP. Exports—especially to China and most particularly of microchips—are also booming.

Better economic management also helps. Inflation is now 2.6%, down from 8.6% in 2004. Changes made in 2005 have increased tax revenues without hurting growth. Despite recent wobbles, the government should still come close to balancing the budget next year, compared with a deficit of over 5% of GDP in 2002.

The country's banks, hurt badly in the 1997 Asian financial crisis, have been slow to recover, but now they are starting to lend again. Foreign direct investment is picking up from a low base. Texas Instruments recently chose the Philippines over China for a $1 billion electronics factory, while Hanjin, a South Korean shipbuilder, will spend $1.7 billion on its Philippines yard. Foreign mining firms have started to develop huge untapped mineral reserves.

The Philippines has rapidly emerged as India's main rival in business-process outsourcing (BPO) and now hosts the call-centres of many American firms. A recent study by the Asian Development Bank reckoned that BPO could provide jobs for up to 11% of those joining the Philippines' labour force between now and 2010.

All good news, but worries remain. However welcome the growth in call-centre jobs, it is engineering and business graduates who are queueing to take them. A recent International Labour Organisation study noted that the country's average annual productivity growth between 2000 and 2005 was just 0.9%, compared with 10.3% in China and 4.9% in India, suggesting that “many new job entrants are underemployed”.

A chief problem, despite foreign interest, is a rate of investment that is at 20-year lows as a share of GDP. Poor infrastructure, especially roads, hampers businesses of all sorts. Gil Beltran, a senior finance-ministry official, says the government intends to increase annual infrastructure spending from 2.8% of GDP to 5%. Successive administrations have had a poor record of keeping such promises.

The public finances still need a lot of fixing. Tax revenues as a share of GDP are still below pre-1997 levels, while public debt is high, at around 75% of GDP. The next big job, says Mr Beltran, is to simplify the mess of illogical tax breaks that cost a fortune in lost revenues. Efforts to drag big-business tax-dodgers to court have so far got nowhere. A swingeing tax rise on Jeepney owners looks like squeezing the poor to spare the rich.

Perhaps a virtuous cycle will develop. The government might boost revenues and spend them on sensible works, so encouraging business, which would boost tax revenues further. It is easier to imagine the Philippines slipping back into complacency, relaxing its efforts and letting this golden opportunity pass by.

Di baya ko hilig ug fiction REANCORBS he he. Naa ko former co-worker in my stint in Manila, who is originally from Quezon, Bukidnon-and now based in CDO as a deejay in an FM station there. He invited me over and brough me to SM. He said, "at least we now have an SM here just like Davao." And he has been to Davao and tried our SM there so he had a bit of comparison to speak of. And when we went to the food court, he said, "ngee, kabaho ug gas, tara balhin ta!". Mao na ang nahitabo.

Let's celebrate
By Stella Estremera
Spider’s Web

WAITING for my flight to Manila, the sun was up, amid some clouds as if taunting those unfortunate to be leaving the city to meet Egay, the typhoon in Metro Manila. The weather was perfect. The noonday sun was up, but the clouds tempered this down.

Fear was gripping me, not knowing what's in store in Manila after watching the late night news Wednesday and morning news on Thursday to keep track of Egay. Not contented, I even logged on to the Pagasa website to see where the typhoon was headed.

It was an uneventful flight though. A little turbulence, but not as terrible as I expected; well, Egay was still out there, threatening but not yet at its worst.

At the Manila airport, the baggage carousel has started to turn, bringing in what has become the trademark of Davao arrivals? The smell of durian mixed with the slight citrus scent of pomelo and the tang of black ants. Yup, black ants; several of them creeping out of boxes containing lanzones.

Round and round the carousel too are crates with the dark violet mangosteen peeking out from between slats. Davao was at its proudest, announcing the arrival of its residents and visitors all loaded with boxes and crates of fruits.

Very few passengers left without a box, a huge number having more. PAL must be grinning. I wonder how much PAL earns from excess baggage during harvest season. I was among those without a box. I wasn't meeting a relative or friend in this short trip. But that didn't mean I did not have any.

Inside my suitcase is a kilo or so of mangosteen that I decided to bring with me as baon, leftover of the night before. Mangosteen was selling for P25 to P30 per kilo from where I come from, who could resist such? I couldn't and thus have been eating it for dinner for the past days, except last Wednesday when I had durian for dinner. It's the season to eat fruits; a once a year feast that no Dabawenyo could ever resist.

It's like a countdown, with the Dabawenyos peering out of their vehicles whenever they pass through Magsaysay Park, taking stock of the amount of durian being unloaded at the fruit stands there. Once the fruits come by the truckloads, the Dabawenyos start to gather, eating fruits for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Inside the airport taxi, Jon, his wife Dadai, Carol and I were giggling. Jon's load of durian fruits have started to emit its odor inside the air-conditioned taxi. Poor driver. How can he explain to the next rider? Especially if that rider is not a durian-lover.

Alone in my hotel room, I watched the midnight news once more, keeping track of Egay still. It's expected to bring in heavy rainfall in Metro Manila the following day, Friday, until Saturday, the report said. It has gathered strength and was going at 225kph. I could only pray that it will not hit land as the weather forecasters said.

I do not look forward to experiencing a typhoon and I need to be back in Davao by Saturday. After all, if you’re a true-blue Dabawenyo (whether adopted or lumad), you are not inclined to stay one day longer than needed in Manila.

Every Filipino may be proud of his hometown, but no one can ever hold a candle to a Dabawenyo when he talks of his hometown? But can anyone blame us? You only need to see the over a hundred boxes of fruits (and pitch in a couple of whole lechon wrapped in carton) going round and round the baggage carousel in the Manila airport.

Anyone willing to be charged for excess baggage or to lug a whole lechon should very well know that whatever it may cost him (both money-wise and convenience), he's still getting it at a bargain. Where else in the Philippines can anyone afford to be that generous? Only in Davao, and that is all because every Dabawenyo knows he has plenty to share. Yeah and that is only as far as you could go in one single night. There's still more enclaves there that give visitors the cosmo feel not so common in any Mindanaoan city but Davao.

Durian season is here!

Blogie

http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/6228/durianlu5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

No self-respecting Davao publication will ever go far without carrying anything about the King of Tropical Fruits — the Durian. So, here’s my own personal experience of this prized delicacy of the Philippine South.

For more than half my life, I actually never touched the stuff. I guess it was because my mother hadn’t started eating durian until she was pregnant with my younger brother (na pinaglihi naman sa durian!). So during my formative years, Mom must’ve passed on to me her Manileño’s aversion to the fruit.

What’s ironic is, it was in fact in Manila (during college) where I learned how to eat durian! It was mainly out of pride of origin: since I was from Davao, I felt the need to show solidarity with fellow Dabawenyos in Manila and eat durian with them. I guess, for us, that’s akin to breaking bread…. And it was an awakening for me! After wolfing down my first few seeds, I couldn’t believe I’d missed out on durian my entire childhood.

This month is the start of durian’s best season (apparently there are two ripening seasons in a year), and this will last until October. It’s that time when Dabawenyos go crazy over this aromatic enigma. ‘Smells like hell, but tastes like heaven’ is how the durian is described by converts. But to a Dabawenyo, the scent of durian is neither good nor bad — it just is.

My family hosted an exchange student from Portland, Oregon many years ago. He was in Davao for a year, and he’d gotten hooked on durian. Pop said the kid would spend his allowance on durian and durian shakes like crazy. And when it was time to leave and head home for the U.S., he lamented, “What am I gonna do? There’s no durian in Portland!”

The Kadayawan sa Dabaw is upon us. Ergo, it would be inexcusable to not go visit any of the durian parks in the city. There’s one on F. Torres St., another one in Pryce Business Park, and another in front of Magsaysay Park. Let’s not forget the fruit stands of Madrazo and along Anda St. Sample the different kinds of durian now available.

Growers of durian have long developed new varieties, I believe coming from grafts of Thai varieties. But my ultimate favorite is Davao’s native variety — the one that’s slightly bitter and has just a hint of buttery flavor.

nabayot na siguro ang mga badjao kay vadjao na man. ehhe. usually sa mga lumads, common usage ang letter "V" just like obu-manuvu is the same with obo-manobo. sama tribe pareha lang sa samal. both sama & badjao nakatira sa coastal areas ng davao gulf.

Actually the Philippines as a whole is in the center of all important economic centers kaya kahit anong seaside city sa Pinas pwedeng maging International Transhpment Hub o Gateway pero not all cities can be a National Transhipment Hub. Anyway, that article losses its credibility of being an "outsider comment" since the writer openly admitted that he has been to Davao sometime.
