You're right Ambs but when push comes to shove, I think they really have to go and the most legit way to exhort them to do so is by certain ordinance whereby they are given remunerations for the incurred loss while out of business. Tax holiday can be one of the perks the city gov't can offer them just so the whole Torres stretch can really fit the bill as the food avenue.

Export processing zone sought for Davao

DAVAO CITY — The Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry is pushing for the establishment of an export processing zone here.

Ferdinand Marañon, vice-president for agribusiness of the organization, said an export processing zone is necessary to attract more investors in the city and to assist local companies that are already into processing and exporting.

Mr. Marañon, who has been in the business of banana processing, said investors are always attracted to export processing zones because of incentives like tax holidays that government grants them.

Right now, he said, big companies build their respective processing zones and ports because the government failed to provide them with these necessary facilities.

However, smaller companies are left with nothing and are forced to shell out big amounts just so they can use facilities of others. In his case, Mr. Marañon said he has located his processing plant in a cold-storage facility of a bigger company.

One good area that can be developed into export zone, he said, is the former First Oriental Processing Zone in Panacan, which has been abandoned since the mid-’90s. Mr. Marañon said his association is looking for an investor capable of developing the area, considering that it is big enough at about 20 hectares to house the needed facilities. "The city should have a big area for the project and the one in Panacan is enough for this project," he said, recalling that the project was abandoned in the past because of lack of locators.

In the Davao City Business Conference held last month, Agriculture Undersecretary Jesus Emmanuel Paras told participants that his department will find a way to help them on the setting up of an export processing zone.

Mr. Paras said the department might even look into providing the agribusiness sector some funds to set up these zones.

In her presentation during the Mindanao Food Congress early this month, Trade Assistant Secretary Merly Cruz also reiterated the importance of an export processing zone, noting that this will support efforts of the agriculture sector and the government to improve Mindanao’s food productivity.

Ms. Cruz noted that, in Mindanao, there are only two export processing zones: the 27-hectare Philippine Packing Agricultural Processing Zone in Bugo, Cagayan de Oro and the 46-hectare Bukidnon Agro-Industrial Export Zone in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon.

I guess it would take a while before another establishment rises up in the vacated area. Look at former Cosmo on the corner of Guererro and Villa Abrille. It's more than a decade after it got razed by fire and it's still bare.

Now that the Kadayawan Festival is over its time to get back to business. First thing that comes into my mind is to know the status of these big projects in the city. Any updates of the following?

1. Davao-Samal Bridge
Last Update (May 19, 2007)
Public Works and Highways Acting Secretary Manuel Bonoan, together with USEC Rafael Yabut and DPWH XI Director Dimas Soguilon inspected the proposed $120-million bridge linking Samal to Davao City. (PIA)

2. Matina Flyover
Last Update (June 6, 2007)
The other project being eyed by DPWH, the flyover along McArthur Highway at the Matina Crossing, is intended to alleviate the congestion of traffic in the area as vehicles that headed north and south will not have to wait it out for vehicles turning towards Matina Aplaya and Matina Pangi. The flyover project of the DPWH is set to be passable by January 1, 2008.
3. New Shopping Malls

Davao Leads Wifi Access in Mindanao

Coffee shops are sprouting everywhere in Davao City. It is becoming more like New York where coffee drinking is a way of life. Anyway, if you see a coffee shop in Davao, chances are it is a wifi hotspot establishment. Davao boasts of having the most number of shops with wifi features in Mindanao. From Mindanao Blog, the site gives us a list of wifi hotspots in every city in Mindanao.

With a total of 45 wifi hotspots (and counting) listed in Davao, it catapulted the city as the undisputed number one in Mindanao. Funny, that number would easily increase in real time considering how every shops in the city are crazy over joining the bandwagon. That’s good news to laptop owners.

^^ WiFi Access is one of my main categories in choosing a cafe/coffee shop to hang out in. LOL. Karl's (Buhangin) and K1 (Torres) are my favorites. Indeed, almost on every main thoroughfare in Davao City you will find at least one Coffee Shop. Haaay, I miss Davao and its free WiFi Zones!

BIMP-Eaga investment gab here in October

IN ITS continued stance to revitalize the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area initiative, the BIMP-Eaga Business Council, through its focal organization in the Philippines, the Mindanao Business Council, is spearheading the BIMP-Eaga Investment Conference (BIMP iCon) on October 22-23, 2007, at the Marco Polo Hotel, Davao City.

The BIMP iCon will be one of the major events in the forthcoming 15th Senior Officials & 12th Ministers' Meeting that will be hosted by the city.

Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007

The event will look at the investment potentials on Natural Resource Development, SME Development, Tourism Development, Transportation, Infrastructure and Communication, and Local Growth Areas Competitiveness Enhancement in the Asian sub-region.

Highlights of the two-day conference include business and investment matching sessions, institutional exhibits which will showcase the investment potentials of member countries and their respective facilitation services, and the generation of project ideas and proposals which can enhance trade, investment, and tourism within the Eaga region and their corresponding global potentials.

BIMP iCon is expected to intensify the role of the private sector in the economic cooperation and will gather the different stakeholders, development partners of the sub-region and the international donor communities.

The MinBC is partnering with the Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco) and Philippine Eaga agencies in organizing the event.

New attractions in PTA Park


Davao City (1 September) -- By coming December, the PTA Park will be opened, with a new name and brand new attractions for its visitors.

According to Elisa Madrazo, project manager of the 4-hectare park, they are trying to complete the park for its scheduled opening this December. The facility was earlier scheduled to be opened by August in time for the Kadayawan week but Elisa said that there were other structures still to be completed.

Among the facilities include a sunken garden ideal as picnic ground and a gathering area for artists. The sunken garden is located in the old Olympic-sized swimming pool. There is also an area for playing children and a facility for the waiting yayas provided with clean restrooms.

A breastfeeding station is also being built for visiting mothers who want to breastfeed their babies; the particular breastfeeding facility is in support to a Department of Health program which aims to have breastfeeding stations in workplaces and recreation centers.

Madrazo said that the park will have a main receiving area for visitors; the visitor's center can then be used as a venue for special events like concerts and can be sealed-off from the rest of the park. "If there is a night concert, we can just open the visitor's center and close the rest of the park so that the plants there will not be disturbed by the concert-goers," Madrazo said.

The P71-million park development is also a one big botanical garden filled with ornamental plants among which are endemic floras, uniquely found in Davao. Traces of the former oval of the PTA athletic complex is enhanced with a jogging trail that goes around the park's lush greenery, which Madrazo hopes will attract many joggers in the park.

Other facilities include a biodiversity conservation facility, a miniature rainforest and interactive fountain plus the park is dotted with sculptures and pieces of installation art from local artists.

A name-the-park contest initiated by the City Mayor and Park proponent Mayor Rodrigo Duterte will run until September 30. The winner will receive at least P50, 000 and will be duly recognized by the office of the City Mayor at the park's grand opening. (PIA XI/RG Alama) [top]

Quick and dirty review.
Was down.

In the pits.

Empty.

Blackhole-ville.

Thankfully my hommes obliged me for a night of gluttony.

Chattee mentioned an eat all you can greaseless chicken for 95 pesos and I was in the right mood to indulge myself. Where was this? It was at Damosa and the place? Q.

7:00PM.

Out of the house from wallowing in self-pity and misery and quickly went to S. Ah. Another of those blackholes. Later on that. Grabbed C and SMS'd J. Drove to Q like a bat out of hell. Q turned out to be Quantum.

Got there. No Jude. Where's the buffet?

Well, it wasn't really much of a buffet. Served a quarter of a chicken and given another as soon as the previous one was all but bones.

Tasty. Hot. Somewhat greaseless. Started out with a spoon and a fork but soon relented and chose my fingers as my weapons of choice. In the middle of my second quartered chicken, Jude arrived.



All in all, we Three were satisfied. Jude ate a whole chicken while I had 3 and a half and Chattee had 2 and a half.
The dinner went swimmingly with 14 bottles of San Mig Light and DNA.

DNA?

DNA was the acoustic duo who played tonight. "D" and Ariel (I forget what "D" means). Maroon 5, Matchbox20, Jason Mraz, etc. It was a good night to be out to flush away some of those dark things that made me ill today. Daisy came by later after the chicken have been gobbled up. Still it was nice to see her join the group albeit a little late.

The moon was also out tonight. Few strands of fluffy clouds didn't spoil the fact it was such a nice night tonight.

Unlimited greaseless chicken for 95 pesos, 5+2 beer for 200, DNA, and friends. Great way to spend an evening.

Let's not look at another chicken for a few weeks, ok? 'Cept for Daisy.

By the way, the unlimited chicken is only available from 8 to 10 nightly. Not sure about anything
