Very smart woman she is Saturday, September 08, 2007 At the helm of city tourism By Grace L. Plata SHE had just been appointed as new City Tourism Officer during the Kadayawan sa Dabaw season but Gerardinn Marie C. Angeles-Duran has shown she's one capable lady judging from the success of the whole celebration. Updates on the Kagay-an Festival 2007 Duran had been appointed by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte as the new city tourism officer on August 9, 2007 - a year after the resignation of former City tourism officer Id Acaylar and a day after the opening of the 2007 Kadayawan. Acaylar is a tough act to follow and Duran faces a tough situation to be in. But the new tourism officer seems to take it all in stride. Geri, as she is called by friends and family, was born in Davao City to Pedrito G. Angeles and Adela M. Castllo on December 27, 1971. Her name "Gerardinn" was patterned after her paternal grandfather, Gerardo Angeles, a top notch lawyer from a family of lawyers. A blue-blooded Atenean since grade school, Geri grew up in Juna Subdivision and stayed there until finishing college except for that one year she spent in the US as an exchange student under the Rotary Exchange Program. Geri spent her senior year in high school in Columbus, Ohio's Gahanna Lincoln High School. When she came back from the US, Geri proceeded to take up Bachelor of Arts majoring in Communication Arts at her beloved Ateneo de Davao University. In her sophomore year in college, Geri was tapped by Philippine Airlines to be one of its flight attendants as did her mother before her. After her five-year stint as flight attendant, she decided to return to Davao City and finish her schooling. After graduation, Geri turned to the other part of the tourism industry -- food and accommodation. Geri was among Marco Polo Hotel Davao's pioneering staff when it first opened in 1998. She served as Marco Polo's assistant manager until 2003 before working for the Peninsula Manila in Makati for three years. With these experiences under her belt, Geri realized she wanted to share her knowledge and experiences with Davao City, which she has always called and considered home. So in 2006, she packed up and returned to Davao. Back in Davao, Geri started to develop condominium units in Matina near the heart of the city while she re-oriented herself with the city's tourism landscape. When she heard of a vacancy in the city's tourism office, she did not hesitate to send in an application thinking it was the perfect venue to share and apply her knowledge and experience. "I assure you that I will help Davao City in becoming the center of the tourism industry in Mindanao," Geri said during her courtesy call to the City Council last August 14 where she spoke for the first time to the public since being appointed in office. New as she is, Geri will undoubtedly bring sunshine in the city tourism office and infuse its ventures with new ideas after a whole year's lack of someone in-charge. davaoeagle September 8th, 2007, 01:04 AM Guerilla workshop enters 5th year (http://www.mindanaotimes.com.ph/story.php?id=17842) Published : 2007-09-06 • Workshop schedule to start this October IN its quest to strengthen the filmmaking movement in Mindanao, The Alchemy of Vision and Light Film and Television Productions once again initiates Guerilla Filmmaking Workshop with the theme “Fighting a Different War” on October 6-7, 13-14, and 20-21. Sarian NOW, it’s final. The durian festival in Quezon City will start on Friday, September 14 and will run through October 14, according to Ben Roy, executive director of the Mindanao Fruit Industry Development Council (Minfruit). This will be at the AANI Herbal Garden & Livelihood Center, Quezon Memorial Circle. Another venue will be in Alabang. Also ongoing is the durian festival at SM City in Cebu which started last August 31. Manilans will have the chance to eat durian at a more reasonable price, according to Roy. What will make it more expensive than in Mindanao is the high cost of transportation. However, the price will be considerably lower than the prevailing prices in Manila supermarkets. The organizers are tying up with the Aboitiz-owned freight forwarder 2GO to send the fruits via the company’s RoRo system. This is hoped to cut down on transit time and minimize product spoilage, which would, in turn, result in lower shipping costs and more competitive prices for our produce at the retail level, said Roy. He explained that the holding of the durian festival in Metro Manila and elsewhere is part of Minfruit’s aggressive effort to spur the demand for durian and other Mindanao tropical fruits by bringing them closer and more affordable to ordinary consumers. "Through this focused marketing effort, we intend to encourage more people to eat durian and other fruits, thereby developing a strong local market for these produce in the medium to long-term," Roysaid. The Minfruit Council is the umbrella organization of associations of fruit growers in Mindanao with a membership base of 3,000 fruit growers. The Durian Industry Council of Region XI is a member of Minfruit, composed mostly of growers in Davao. According to government statistics, some 15,000 hectares are devoted to durian with an estimated production of 40,000 tons in 2005. Per capita consumption in the country is a measly 0.4 kg., among the lowest in Southeast Asia. dinabaw September 8th, 2007, 02:20 AM ;15239163']hukason na lang jud ang kwintas para safe  duh dili ko concerned ana oi kay dili man tingali na tinood :D pero na intriga lang ko ngano daw dapat hukason ang kwintas pag mag gerger ituslob na sa init na tubig ug inumon murag tsa. nikkixtrm September 8th, 2007, 02:25 AM ituslob na sa init na tubig ug inumon murag tsa. dili lng unta matunlan. @waway 'gerger' kay kataw-anan paminawon. dinabaw September 8th, 2007, 02:38 AM Friday, September 07, 2007 Asian Football picks Davao coach to join Course for Coaches The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has chosen former Davao standout David Dwight Penano to join the Project Future Course for Coaches on October 22 to 31 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Davao Football Association under President Gerry Romero-Salas made the announcement on Friday. Penano played for the Davao City squad in the 1990s under the late reverred coach Jose `Sensei' Te and later on joined the Philippine Army's football squad. After passing the AFC `C' Coaching Course on May 267 to June 10 in Kota Kinabalo and Sabah, he went back to Davao to continue working for the Ateneo de Davao football squads and the Davao FA Center for Football Excellence. `It was a tough coaching course and it is both physically and mentally demanding. The course director, Bader Abdul Jalil Shebab from Kuwait is AFC's Most Senior Elite Instructor and he rovided great inspiration as he managed the course adroitly adhering to the high standards of AFC elite coaches education programs,' he said. The AFC has been conducting license exams for coaches in the Asian region and recently conducted competitions for young players. Last year, Davao players Darwin Salavia and Ken Hager formed part of the national squad that played in the AFC Under 14 Festival in Kuala Lumpur and just this year, Derrico Gabriel `Gio' Diamante, David Angelo Diamnate, Amani Aguinaldo and Karell Gatmaitan were members of the national team that played in the AFC Under 13 Festival. AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam has set four sub-regional groupings namely, West Asia, Central and South Asia, East Asia and the Southeast Asia, where coaching courses will be conducted conducted and that top performing participants will be pooled and given special continuous enhancement programs. http://www.funchain.com/post/0000005924 dinabaw September 8th, 2007, 02:50 AM Saturday, September 08, 2007 Eden Resort lures Korean honeymooners in WeddEx '07 EDEN Nature Park and Resort, one of the country's premier tourist and nature destinations, joined some of the country's top hotels, resorts, spas, airlines and other allied tourism service establishments in the 2007 Wedding Exhibition (WeddEx) Korea Expo held last August 11 to 15 at the Convention and Exhibition Center in Seoul, Korea. Online memorial for Cebu's Nenita "Inday Nita" Daluz. Post testimonials here. Updates on the Kagay-an Festival 2007 The WeddEx is the largest scale wedding related exhibition in Korea, with the longest history and the most visitors, registering 70,000 visitors last year. The exhibit showcased the Philippines as a perfect tropical paradise for honeymooners. Along with Eden Nature Park and Resort, Asian Spirit, Boracay Regency Beach Resort, Mandala Spa and Villas, Plantation Bay, Dos Palmas Island Resort, Patio Pacific Boracay, El Nido Resorts, Club Paradise and SEA Air also participated in the expo. The Department of Tourism is promoting the country as a multi-dimensional destination catering to the wide spectrum of the Korean outbound market. The participation of Philippines, spearheaded by the Department of Tourism, reinforced the country's positioning as a prime wedding and honeymoon destination in the region. According to the DOT figures, honeymooners account for some 15 percent or 1.7 million of Korea's total outbound market of 11.6 million. This market segment, mostly belonging to the 31-40 age bracket, is expected to increase as the Korean government is now providing incentives for its citizens to get married in a bid to head off the rise of an ageing population in the next 20 years. According to JP Sho, editor of the WeddEx Daily and concurrent publisher of the Travel Press said that the Philippines has once again enhanced its profile maximizing its sales promotion and demonstrating the marketability of its popular honeymoon destinations, namely Cebu, Davao and Amanpulo, among others, with its participation in the WeddEx. Eden Nature Park and Resort, the only participating resort from Mindanao, is an 80 hectare tourism estate with 58 standard rooms and cottages, 5 family cottages and 25 tents for camping. It also has world-class restaurant, convention, and recreation facilities. He said the operations of the two new plants, the DCFPC will be housing six processing plants although he said that the other four plants that also processed tuna products source out their tuna requirements from General Santos City. Malinao said there is a decline in the sashimi grade tuna unloaded at the DCFPC because the number of international vessels that call the DCFPC went lower even as he said that the imbalance is taken cared of by the increasing number local vessels that call the port and unload their catch. As this developed he said the DCFPC cannot meet the requirement of supplying 3.5 percent metric tons of the total volume to the city's wet market. But he said the need of the Davao consumers is supplied 60 to 70 percent by General Santos City. He said unloading in General Santos City is between 200 to 400 metric tons daily compared to Davao with only 50 metric tons. Malinao meanwhile reported that from January to August 2007, of the 1,307 MT of sashimi grade tuna unloaded at the DCFPC, 650 MT went to Japan while the rest went to Canda or the US. He said instead of only shipping our tuna to Japan, the shipment of sashimi-grade tuna because of its popularity also goes to other foreign markets like US, Canada and China. Cruz, Davao del Sur welcomed the newest Hedcor Sibulan, Inc (HSI) as it had its groundbreaking activity yesterday. HSI, the newest baby of the Aboitiz group in the hydropower industry, started the construction of a 42.5-megawatt hydropower source tapping the resources of both Sibulan and Baroring Rivers. Hedcor Chief Executive Officer Erramon Aboitiz claimed that the project ensures environmental safety as well as economic benefits to the community. "We have made sure that the project is environment friendly since we designed it as run-of-river hydropower plants. We do not impound water here; we simply maintain a small pond for the power generation. That makes our project good for the environment," he said. Studies showed that the said hydro plant could produce carbon neutral electricity. Such kind is believed to reduce greenhouse gases. More than 80,000 tons of equivalent carbon dioxide is reduced as the facility could generate electricity from zero-emissions technology. Indigenous people in the area specifically those from Bagobo-Tagabawa tribes easily accepted the entry of the project as it provided them a number of benefits. On of which is how it contributes a certain amount from its revenues to the said communities. The agreement stated that the community will get an average of P13 million annually for a period of 12 years from Hedcor. "We are making sure that everything that is cited in the agreement will all be complied by our company," Aboitiz guaranteed. Also part of the benefits is the opening and improvement of 44.8 kilometers of road which will supplement farm-to-market roads in those communities. About P250 million is allocated for road improvement alone. Hedcor has also promised to hire local residents to be part of the construction operations. HSI will employ more than 800 people in the construction stage alone. Moreover, areas like Sitios Marawer, Tudaya, Darong and Bidaran will also be energized as the company embraced the financing for the supply and erection of required electrical poles and lines to supply these communities with clean energy. Davao del Sur governor Douglas Cagas claimed that the said project is mutually beneficial for both the company and the community. "As they are making use of the people's resources, we are also asking them to provide us with economically beneficial projects geared towards the development of the community," he said. Balane/MindaNews Tuesday, 28 August 2007 00 49 01 DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/27 August) -- After more than two decades of hosting large and small-scale gold mining, Compostela Valley province will now make jewelry-making a priority and its governor is eyeing a cooperative set-up for this. Governor Arthur Uy, who spoke to reporters at the Kapihan sa Dabaw press conference at SM City today, said he will make jewelry-making a priority of his administration. Showing a bracelet he was wearing, he said it was ironic that Compostela Valley has the gold resources but it is not processing locally. He said if areas such as Meycauayan in Bulacan, where there are no gold reserves, have lucrative jewelry-making industry, why not Compostela Valley? He said there is a need for the local government to support at least ten skilled household-based jewelry-makers in the province. Uy said the industry has already started but there is a great need to deal with marketing. "They have the capacity and the skills, we have the resources. We just need the technical people to come in for designs and production style fit for the market," he said. The province's new governor said they will push through with the cooperative set-up of the jewelry industry, which started three years ago. He cited a fund given by President Arroyo to a cooperative, but operations have not prospered due to a need for fine-tuning. According to www.gov.ph, the President had given P1-million to the town of Monkayo in Compostela Valley for a SME into gold jewelry production in 2002. Uy clarified that the cooperative already had sold jewelry during a Mindanao-wide tourism exposition. He said they will send people to train in Bulacan starting this year. He also cited a plan to send trainees to Thailand. Uy said they want to come up with a comprehensive plan on the project within the next two years. In the meantime, he said, they will focus on what they can do at the local level. He said they will also look into developing their agriculture and tourism industries. The governor, however, could not present figures for the volume of gold mined in the province. He also wants to know why the province got almost zero taxes from mining operations in eight towns in the province where small-scale mining operates. He said the province lost "multi-million" revenues from taxation via the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) Natural Resources Development Corporation, which has been granted full control and total management of the small scale mining operations in Mt. Friday, September 07, 2007 Excellence: It's what Davao readers deserve By Nelson C. Bagaforo IT'S a feat than no other community daily in Mindanao can ever stake claim to, except Sun.Star Davao: bagging five of the six awards given out during the 11th PPI-Konrad Adenauer Foundation Community Press Awards in Manila in April this year. Thus, as Sun.Star Davao celebrates its 12th year, it likewise celebrates the reason for its excellence -- its readers and advertisers. After all, it's the discriminating readers of the Davao Region matched by Sun.Star's desire to serve the community that has resulted to a newspaper that is proudly Dabawenyo, consequently the country's best. Online memorial for Cebu's Nenita "Inday Nita" Daluz. Post testimonials here. Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007 The paper won as Best Edited Community Daily Newspaper, Best in Business Reporting, Best in Environment Reporting and Best in Photojournalism. It was the third time Sun.Star Davao was adjudged as Best Edited Daily. It received the same accolade in 2001 and 2004. In addition to this virtual sweep, Sun.Star Davao is the only community paper all over the country with the five-time individual awardee, in the person of its editor-in-chief Stella A. Estremera, in the six-year PPI-Unicef Child Friendly Newspapers and Journalists Awards. Last year, Sun.Star Davao also received the Regional Newspaper of the Year award bestowed by Rotary Club of Manila -- the only community paper in Mindanao to have won such prestigious national award. For the past 12 years, since Sun.Star Cebu has taken over majority ownership of the paper, Sun.Star Davao has emerged as a quality newspaper, proven by numerous awards it has so far received. To a large degree, this assures advertisers that it is the best vehicle in promoting their products and vehicles. Credibility cannot be bought, but it can be shared. Gulf Cities On top of these awards is the management's relentless efforts to come up with new ideas to ensure readers are not short of the information they need most. New sections were conceptualized to cater various sectors and communities where the paper circulates. Last year, Gulf Cities, a regular section that comes out Mondays to Fridays, was launched, focusing on developmental news and features -- far from the usual crime and political stories -- from the provinces of Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, Compostela Valley and Davao del Norte and the cities of Mati, Tagum, Panabo and Digos. While there are many local dailies and weeklies published in Davao, not one has ever given a deliberate developmental focus on all the provinces and cities in the region like Sun.Star has endeavored to do with its Gulf Cities. Gulf Cities, is just one among the many "firsts" in the history of Sun.Star Davao. And these innovations revolutionized community newspapering in this part of the country. Web Machine Sun.Star Davao is the first to acquire a state-of-the-art printing machine to meet the market demand of coming out early, even with its growing circulation. This year, the paper acquired a Gross Community five-unit, four-color offset web machine is capable of printing 20,000 copies of a 16-page folded newspaper per hour. With its capacity to print, this multi-million peso investment in modern printing equipment enables Sun.Star Davao and its three sister publications -- Sun.Star General Santos, SuperBalita Davao and SuperBalita Socsksargen -- to hit the streets several hours ahead of its competitors or even before coffee or breakfast is served. No other local newspaper in Mindanao has that printing capacity although just about everyone claims to have the biggest circulation. Image-setter Before the other locals even thought about it, Sun.Star Davao rode on the wave of technological advancements and invested on an image-setter, thereby improving the visual standards of newspapering in the city. It was the first community paper in Mindanao to use such although a few others quickly followed suit. Acquired in 2001, the image-setter enables Sun.Star Davao and its sister publications to make high-resolution reproduction of both black-and-white and color pictures, advertising copies and graphic arts, in effect tripling the printing quality of the paper. Davao Yearbook Sun.Star Davao's most recent achievement, unparalleled in Mindanao's newspaper industry, is the publication of The Davao Yearbook, whose first edition in 2004 has received wide acceptance and appreciation as a publication of form and substance worthy of keeping in libraries and archives for generations to come. Sun.Star Website Sun.Star Davao became first to be online setting up its own news website in February 1997, way before other Mindanao-based community newspapers acquired their own email address. It went on to tap other website developers coming up with two news websites by 1999 -- the www.sunstar.davao.net and www.davaocity.com/sunstar -- before the Cebu City-based Sun.Star News Exchange came up with a centralized website for all Sun.Star affiliates. The website, www.sunstar.com.ph (just click on Davao to access Sun.Star Davao), is one the country's most-visited sites in the Internet. It enjoys over 40 million hits and 15.7 million page views a month from visitors in and outside the Philippines who wish to get the latest news on their community. These visitors include professionals and company executives from all over the world, overseas Filipino workers who can influence buying patterns of their families left in the Philippines, consumers, students, youths, and others employed in various sectors. Unique visits to the website reached 2.45 million a month. The website carries web specials on various issues and community events around the country. Examples are the Arroyo Watch section on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her government, and the Citizen Journalist blog. It has an active discussion board participated in by members from around the world who exchange online commentaries on almost any issue. Davao del Norte second district Rep. Antonio Lagdameo Jr. mao ni sya ang bana ni tita Dawn??? recognizes this tremendous potential of Samal Island, thus he is batting for the establishment of a special economic zone and freeport in the island city, located just a few hundred meters across the Davao City mainland. Lagdameo said he has filed House Bill 1486 for this purpose, as well as for the creation of a small island special economic zone and freeport authority in Samal. “There is so much we can do with Samal Island. The special economic zone and freeport (are) conducive because of the city’s proximity to Davao City, considered to be the leading growth center in this part of the country, where trade and commercial activities are brisk,” he said. Samal Island, which can be reached by ferries or motorboats within five to 10 minutes from Davao City, is a known tourist destination in Southern Mindanao as it hosts a number of beach resorts, including the world-renowned Pearl Farm Beach Resort. It has a continuous coastline stretching 118.5 kilometers and a total land area of 30,130 hectares. The proposed special economic zone and freeport are being eyed in a 500-hectare area in Babak town. “There are many locators which are eyeing Samal Island and we are seizing that opportunity with the proposed special economic zone,” Lagdameo said. Real estate prices in Samal Island have increased in the past few years as more people have settled on the island, especially foreign retirees or foreigners married to Filipinas. Lagdameo said a P70-million cable system will soon be put in place to ensure adequate power supply in Samal. On the other hand, several water sources have been identified although there is still a need to integrate the distribution system to the city’s more than 86,000 residents. “The whole idea is to generate more employment for the residents and at the same time attract legitimate and productive foreign investments to Samal Island,” Lagdameo said. I don't even usually take it with soft drinks as others are wont to do. Until this darn buddy of mine introduced the idea of gorging on cheap barbecue afterwards. It was like my taste buds shouting, "Voila!" The taste of sinful ulam after durian got the taste buds' approval... and the rest is history -- including the flabs that are rushing toward my thighs as the durian season rages on, seemingly not wanting to stop yet (the flabs and the durian harvest). Wednesday afternoon the craving for durian became unbearable, beamed at Nelson as I passed his cubicle and urged him to accompany me. I managed to grab Dengdeng as well promising her a durian feast and coffee afterwards. We met up at Durian Paradise along Torres Street at some time past 5 p.m. and feasted on two huge and one small native durian. Burp! But that's durian. The taste buds were already shouting for "ulam." Deng suggested just going over across the street and eat barbecue. I said I can't waste time eating at a place I already tried and that we needed to seek out a new place (and you think this job of finding a place to eat every week is easy, right?). We agreed on this new place just behind Gaisano Mall (I think that's supposed to be called de Guzman Street although that's really the tail-end of Guerrero Street except for this habit of Davao officials to put different names to continuous road stretches (like Lapu-Lapu Street becoming R. Castillo Street at the portion where it's at its straightest and Bolton Street suddenly becoming Rep. Chavez as it passes through the SP Building, to the consternation of Dabawenyos who know Chavez Street as that street with the lechon out there near Uyanguren and the street now called Rep. Chavez as simply Bolton Extension, which makes more sense really). We're digressing... The new place is called Metro Avenue. It's an interior lot spruced up to hold many small spaces (3m x 3m in size), more than 30 of them, but now has only four occupants at present. Being an interior lot with no parking, it's best for people like us... car-less people that is. We walked in to see businessman Ruben Bangayan driving out. "Bangayan pa rin ito?" We asked each other. Right at the entrance portion is a coffee shop that marine environment concerns buddy Arcel once mentioned as a place that's nice to hold quiet meetings in. It's all alone at present. Further in are the three other occupied stalls -- all serving food. Dengdeng pointed to the one with a big group of students offering regular student food -- popular Pinoy pasta, chips, sandwiches, whatever... The other looks like it serves sizzling stuff. My durian bingeing tastebuds that have just recently been introduced to eating ulam" after gorging on durian wanted "ulam." The third stall seems to offer it -- "Grub". Grub as in food. And the place has a long list of ulam too, plus some with rice combinations (toppings and katsudon stuff). No rice, I just want ulam. I picked out their Hot Chix described as Hong Kong style fried chicken wings with hot chili sauce dip and added Kangkong with Chinese Bagoong. Deng got the beef tapa, while Nelson got the Sizzling Bangus with Indian mayonnaise. We were served by this lady who appears to be the owner as well who had this group of ladies -- apparently her barkada -- munching on ripe sampaloc. Now the food... When Grub said their Hot Chix is Hongkong style fried chicken, they meant it. Don't expect the likes of McDo, KFC, Jollibee, even Davao's favorite greaseless chicken style. This one is definitely Chinese, with that distinct taste of Chinese spice -- must be star anise. Meaning, if you are looking for a taste of Binondo, then go try this. But if you are craving for those crispy outside and juicy inside Pinoy favorite fried chicken, then this is not for you. The tapa is also more Chinese than Pinoy. The chili hot suka tuba that goes with it emphasizing the different taste once you dip the meat slice in. The kangkong... it was okay sana, except that it wasn't done over easy and was on the soggy side. (I like my kangkong still bright green with a crunch left, but maybe that's a personal preference). I didn't get a real good taste of Nelson's bangus though. The mayonnaise toppings were a bit on the sweet side. Halfway through our meal, Deng and I realized our craving was just "takaw-tingin." We were so full, our eyes were drooping. We tried to eat up the rest of the food, but our tummies have already given up. Add to the fact that it was threatening to rain, we decided to go home. We left the place at 7:30 p.m., stuffed, groaning to the very limits of our already corpulent tummies, and sleepy. "Sabi mo kasi kape lang," Dengdeng reminded me. Haaay! By the way, the Grub owner confirmed. The property is owned by Ruben Bangayan. Another by the way... if you find time to drop by, please help us solve this puzzle. Across the street from Metro Avenue is a parking area of tricycles of sorts where an electric post has this sign tacked on it. Just your regular "Wanted Boarders" sign that you see all over the city. But this one says: Accept Lady Boarders w/ room P650 clean P450 Interpreters needed, please… Peng Hok September 8th, 2007, 11:51 PM I spent most of my teenage years dito...i used to have my lunch here with some friends...weeeeeeeeeeee ako rin kuya jech! hehehe! kaya nga hanggang ngayon andito pa rin ako kasi teenager pa ako... Peng Hok September 8th, 2007, 11:53 PM Daliag kuha og picture atty. @peng hok kay excited na kaayo ko makit-an on how PTA Park would look like from atop! Even former President Bill Clinton could not help but admire her work. At the National Museum in Manila, her picture and that of her works, along with her life story, are also prominently displayed. But it took some years before her townmates in Bansalan, Davao del Sur realized that a gem of an artist has been living in their midst for so long now. Salintan Monon, an 87-year-old Bagobo from Barangay Bitaug, has been weaving the inabal using indigenous materials for decades now. Touted as the last Bagobo inabal weaver, Monon said her work entails patience and endurance. She gathers the abaca materials for her inabal and processes them to extract the fibers. She then collects tree saps and mixes these to produce the colors that she uses. On the average, Monon said one piece of her inabal takes her more than a month to finish. Mayor Edwin Reyes said Monon will be given due recognition during the town’s anniversary on Sept. 18. He said they really did not forget Monon and that they take pride in having her for a townmate. Monon said she was hoping that the recognition she receives from being an inabal weaver could someday financially help her family. She remains in financial distress and still lives in the nipa hut she had been living in for years now. Some businessmen even take advantage of her being unlettered by buying her products at very low prices. Monon said she is forced to sell low because of the need to help her family. Reyes said the local government would help look for businessmen who could help Monon in this aspect. “Monon’s unique talent and creativity should be given value. This could also put Bansalan in the map of the world. We are very happy that a talent like her comes from this place,” he said. davaoeagle September 9th, 2007, 02:27 AM [QUOTE=KulasKusgan;15255047]street scenes (with hummer) quimpo cor sandawa http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a157/kulaskusgan/street/Picture001.jpg http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a157/kulaskusgan/street/Picture032.jpg i found uni oil gas station here, they are expanding na pala in mindanao, just wana ask, naa napud bay total, flying v, sea oil gas stations ron diha sa davao? But because they are Tagalog there with a huge dollop of business district English, they will never understand one word that best describes them as a whole, "hilas." And the Dabawenyos grin. Browsing around Powerbooks, one of the three saving graces of Makati (the other two are Music One and their walkable sidewalks, whether on ground or elevated), two people who apparently went to college together met up and were updating each other about their work. I wanted to bang them with the heavy hardbound book I was browsing through. I've never heard a conversation as heavily-laden with buzzwords as that one. Pretense was dripping from their tongues. It was... hilas. I overcame the temptation to bang them with a book by telling myself to see them through a Dabawenyo's eyes. I quickly did and snorted out a giggle. The two looked my way, I gave them a silly grin. They continued with their conversation. I picked another book. They just made my day... Back in Davao, my friends and I can't help but exclaim over the life we are enjoying here, especially after indulging ourselves with the bumper harvest of fruits Davao is now experiencing. At one such binge, my buddy and I bought a total of three large native variety durian fruits and seven kilos of mangosteen only to be charged less than P500. As we groaned and patted our tummies, all we could heave out was the phrase that has become the mantra of Dabawenyos, "Sarap talaga ng buhay sa Dabaw." Last week as deadlines and problems were about to fray my nerves, I swapped my Thursday regular day-off to an earlier day -- very early in the week in fact, last Tuesday -- and went diving. Not just a one-dive release, but a whole day morning till dusk dive such that my jaw became so sore after biting on the air regulator for hours. I decided to go diving afternoon on the day before. Like where else, without planning, can you do that while living and working in a highly urbanized city? That dive trip while a grand escape was not enough though. The pressures were still not letting up, and work kept on piling on top of the other, I was practically eating deadlines for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with two snacks in between and an occasional midnight snack, thus by Friday evening, I was bouncing off walls again. The solution, an overnight trip to a mountain haven my friends and I disappear to every once in a while. Again, no planning, just texts and a few phone calls (after the messages that had to be exchange became longer such that texting has become so cumbersome). With just one message sent out, friends drop whatever they intend to do to escape with me. No clear plans not even what food we intend to bring. We can talk about the details later, anyway food abounds even along the highways. Like the whole-day diving trip, it's just going to be a very short mountain escape. We leave after lunch Sunday, we'll be back Monday. We are still responsible citizens of this world and attending to responsibilities rank high in our list. But because we are Dabawenyos, loosening up ranks just as high and that is mainly because Dabawenyos have loosening up well within their reach. You don't even have to bother with bookings, accommodations, planning, taking a leave, whatever... all you need to do is grab a few friends and go. Where? We can discuss that later on the road. We're in Davao, we'll never go hungry, we'll never run out of places to go, and the mountains, the sea, the rivers, the release are just around the corner. All we need to remember is to bring the wine and the corkscrew, anyway we'll be back in time for work the following day with a silly grin of relief and release. Friday September 7, 12:43 PM Philippine court sets date for verdict on Estrada MANILA (Reuters) - A Philippine anti-graft court will pronounce the verdict in a plunder case against deposed President Joseph Estrada next week, court officials said on Friday. The court issued an order to national police chief Oscar Calderon to produce Estrada, 70, in court at 9 a.m. (0100 GMT) on Wednesday, Sept. 12 to hear the verdict. Estrada, who was overthrown in an army-backed revolt in 2001, faces life imprisonment if found guilty and the government fears that poor voters, who swept him into office by a record margin in 1998, could riot in Manila. Estrada has maintained he is innocent of charges of stealing up to $80 million from state coffers while in power. "I am confident that I will be acquitted if the court would only base their decision on the merits of the case," he told Reuters in a telephone interview on Thursday from the country villa where he is detained. "They have failed to present any strong evidence to support these fabricated charges." If Estrada is cleared it will rattle President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who was his vice-president and was propelled to power on the strength of the corruption charges. The three-judge bench at the Sandiganbayan anti-graft court completed hearings in the six-year case in June. State prosecutors submitted 626 pages of case summaries based on the testimony of 76 witnesses and documentary evidence, arguing they had presented enough proof to establish Estrada's guilt with "absolute certainty". Estrada's lawyers presented 276 pages of summaries from about 80 witnesses, disputing the prosecution evidence and arguing the state had failed to prove the charges of taking gambling payoffs, tobacco tax kickbacks and unreported income from hidden businesses. Estrada took the witness stand 11 times from March to June 2006, denying the corruption charges. He has said the charges were politically motivated. Renowned for his "midnight cabinet" of drinking and gambling buddies while president, Estrada says the mass street protests that drove him from office were engineered by the country's elite and a group of generals and Catholic bishops. In March, a close associate of Estrada pleaded guilty to corruption and was sentenced to at least two years and four months in jail. Atong Ang, who said he helped Estrada divert $2.6 million of tobacco taxes for the former president's personal use, was later freed on parole. Besting five other dressing plants including Bounty Farms and Purefoods, Vitarich has won the award for four consecutive years. This annual sanitation assessment exercise is conducted by the National Meat Inspection Services (NMIS) of the Department of Agriculture to maintain good manufacturing practices and full compliance to the requirements of meat processing. Vitarich’s Tugbok dressing plant is now the official representative of Southern Mindanao to the national finals of NMIS’s search for the cleanest dressing plant in the country. Vitarich chair and president Rogelio Sarmiento said he hopes the award will inspire other meat processing plants to strive for quality to better serve its clients. http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2007/09/08/bus/vitarich.has.cleanest.dressing.plant.in.s..mindanao.html dinabaw September 9th, 2007, 12:25 PM P150 million puree plant to boast Davao mango industry A Filipino-Chinese corporation will set into operation next month a P150 million mango processing plant in Davao City in a development that could boost the mango industry in the Davao region. The GenTech Corporation plant in Tibungco district already nearing completion would process ripe fresh mango into puree for export to the US and Europe. Ednar Carlos Dayanghirang, president of the Davao Region Mango Contractors Association (Daremca), said his group has already inked a supply contract with GenTech Corp., which is owned by a consortium of Filipino and Chinese businessmen. "Members of Daremca have committed to supply their mango to GenTech which needs 20 tons of mango per day, said Dayanghirang who leads the regions only association of mango growers and contractors. Under a separate agreement, Gentech will provide production support to the producers and a 10 centavo per kilo subsidy, he said. The supply agreement with GenTech is the second major moves local mango growers have undertaken to boost production and marketability of local mangos. Dayanghirang said Daremca is currently negotiating a third supply contract with Green Diamond, another mango exporter based in Davao City. ROGER M.
