Davao mayor wants minors out in boxing arenas
By Ben O. Tesiorna

DAVAO CITY -- Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte wanted to prohibit children below 16 years old from boxing events and trainings here in the city.

A group of boxers regularly training at the Almendras Gym compound requested the mayor that lighting outside the gym be set up since trainings are done at night.

In his television program Sunday, Duterte said training boxers at a tender age is detrimental to the welfare of the minors considering the physical rigors they will undergo especially during a bout.

"Dili maayo sa bata na pirmi maigo ang ulo (It's not good for a child to always be hit in the head). You are contributing a lot of problem. Stop it," Duterte said.

Sun.Star Davao have learned a few years back that retired professional boxers who did not make it big like Manny Pacquiao are among the regular charity patients of the Maharlika Charity Foundation Inc.

Most common ailments of boxers who are not even in their 50s are displaced retina leading to blindness, caused by constant pounding on the head.

In his reply, Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines Davao City chapter president and City Councilor Edgar Ibuyan said they have already instituted measures to regulate the entry of minors in the boxing arena here in the city.

He admitted, however, that they still have 12-year-old boxers undergoing training at their gym located at the back of the Almendras Gym.

A proposed ordinance to regulate boxing among minors was already filed before the City Council.

Committee on youth and sports development chaired by Councilor April Marie Dayap had already conducted public hearing on this regard.

Originally proposed by Councilor Karlo S. Bello, the law is aimed to ensure the safety of young boxers during training or inside the ring.

The councilor said there is a need to eliminate, lessen or prevent hazards, injuries and harmful effects of boxing while encouraging and developing their noble intention in promoting such sport.

The initial draft of the ordinance includes provisions that require trainers, coaches, owners of boxing clinics or gyms to provide the necessary safety or protective gear, vest or paraphernalia within their clinics or gyms to be utilized by their students who are minors.

Proposed penalties for violations of the ordinance is the maximum penalty as provided for under Section 458 of Republic Act 7160, an imprisonment of not exceeding one year, or fine not exceeding P5,000 or both at the discretion of the court. (Sun.Star Davao)

What do you think about MP's plan? Everyone knows the vacant space at the back of the hotel which now serves as a sports activity centre for the employees, is too small for such a massive project. Don't you think they are now going to pursue their plan to buy out the adjacent lot or redevelop the fronting Aldevinco and incorporate the planned expansion with it?

As per Inquirer's report, dun daw sa back lot eh...I wonder nga if pwede dun...d naman cguro feasible ang hirise na convention center diba? what about that property across the back portion of Marco Polo?

Marco Polo to expand Davao hotel

DAVAO CITY, Philippines--Marco Polo Hotels Management Ltd. is expanding its facilities here with a convention center and additional rooms as Mindanao's largest city attracts the growing interest of convention organizers and business executives on leisure travel.

Stanley Lau, general manager of Marco Polo Davao, said in an interview the company had not yet set a definite amount to invest but that this was "easily more than P300 million."

"We are still in talks with building designers, but the owners--the Dominguez family through Halifax Capital Resources Inc.--have given instructions toward expansion as soon as possible," Lau said. "Money is not an issue."

He said the priority is to build a convention center that could accommodate 1,000 people at a time and possibly 100 additional rooms.

Marco Polo Davao's existing 18-story building has 245 rooms and a ballroom that is big enough for 500 people.

Lau, a native of Hong Kong where MPHML is based, said the planned new building would rise on a vacant lot at the back of the hotel.

"Our priority is a new and larger convention venue and its design would determine the number of the additional rooms," he said.

The veteran hotelier said between 70 percent and 80 percent of Marco Polo Davao's existing rooms were occupied, which "are quite healthy numbers."

At the same time, Lau said the firm has been spending on sprucing up the nine-year-old hotel, including the repainting of the exterior areas as well as the refurbishing of the rooms.

"We have been doing this little by little [over] the past two years, starting with the topmost floors," he said.

Further, Marco Polo expects to finish work on a P50-million recreation complex on its fourth floor by yearend.

Having been soft-launched in August during the local Kadayawan festival, the complex called The Deck comprises a restaurant, a function room, a spa and a fitness center that includes a 25-meter swimming pool.

"All of these are part of our efforts to offer amenities that would provide the pampering and indulgence that our market wants," Lau said.

"This is also a strong statement from us about the opportunities that we see as Davao City starts to realize its potential as big tourist drawer," he said.

I wonder which among the three is the site for the upcoming expansion and convention center.

As per news article, it will be a separate building....sayang! so hindi vertical ang expansion, an additional of atleast 10 floors sana yun if 100 rooms target nila.

Although, Aldevinco is a possible site, but considering its historical value and importance in tourism, ok ba dun?

And as per news report, back side of the hotel daw...So i wonder if san jan.... hmmmmmmm

Either way we look at it, Davao has finally recaptured the momentum it had during the mid 1990's when it first saw a construction boom. kudos to Davao!

If the area has been cleared then for sure there would be construction activities happening there anytime soon. Davao is on a roll so investors are just so eager to ride the waves. Was it John Milton who said, "strike while the iron is hot"..he he

i dunno if that's from John Milton but i always heard that in "cowboy movies" when they are branding horses and cows hehehe

That was the talk of the town during construction period of MP. It was supposed to be over 25 but the earth where it is on was so soft for such mass and weight of a building so they reduced the height to 20.

I guess they would build another structure that includes a 1 grand seater convention centre and 100++ rooms in it and as per press release it would rise up on the vacant lot on the Pontiano Street side..

"This is also a strong statement from us about the opportunities that we see as Davao City starts to realize its potential as big tourist drawer," he said.

it will be another high-rise building...... ..but shorter than the original one... my guess it would be around 10 floors, not counting the basment and parking area.

A lot of takers both local and foreign (including Marco Polo Davao) was eyeing the property. Let's just wait and see if this undertaking will bear fruit in the future.

DOST helps SMEs in dev’t

About P2 point 5 million was given out by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) for region 11 in 2007 as its direct intervention to qualified small and medium enterprises for technology development.

Aimed to convince SMEs to upgrade the level of technology to improve and increase production, the Small Enterprises Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) continues to be one of the major projects of the DOST.

DOST Secretary Estrella Alabastro stressed that technology assistance has been one of its consistent and sustainable programs as it has assisted more than 35,000 companies all over the country since 2002.

Among the many type of interventions made by the DOST are consultancy, trainings, chemical specifications, manpower recruitment, label designing, microbiological tests, packaging, assistance for technology purchase, process improvement, and others.

For 2007, the department has identified 20 SETUP products which will be getting interventions from DOST. Included in the SME beneficiaries are the WATI tissue cultures planting material, Asuncion Coco Ventures, Inc, Tagum Golden Foods, Lucille's Food Products, KATAKUS, Inc, DATI Coco crafts, TSR Furniture Shop and Marketing, Supra Fuego Co., Inc, Woodworks Kiln-Dried Products, among others.

DOST also launched the web-based GIS Mapping of these SETUP products for easy tracking of development, promotion, and network opportunities.

Alabastro invited the potential SME beneficiaries to take advantage of such opportunity in developing their businesses.

"Our department is always ready to assist and intervene in whatever concerns of our SMEs that involve technology development," she said. (PIA XI)

And as per news report, back side of the hotel daw...So i wonder if san jan.... hmmmmmmm
the way news report went on, its a convention facility. and judging on your assesment and looking at the image, imo a 1000 capacity facility could not fit in within a space at its backproperty. i guess they will annex more private properties in tis surround. it said money is not an issue. and theyre anticipating more than P300 million. so well expect a grand development with 100 room accomm if it could allow within the facility?. i think that is how i gt it

It's no secret that MP owners were egging the adjacent properties to let them (MP) buy them out in anticipation for expansion but those properties haggled for more value of their properties to a rate that is in the high heavens ...and so the rumor mills said...

wow.... ang galing ng city tour mo sir junax .... can you also tour me once i'm back in davao (i'm still somewhere in northern mindanao ;) )

^^ hey goys... i invented, invented gyud hehe, a route for a smooth joyride crisscrossing davao city. sa dami ba naman ng mga bisita ko these days na hindi taga davao, ubos gas ko kasi gusto nila makita ang davao in 1 hour hahaha, sabi ko, i need a helicopter for that.

ACTIVITY: 2 1/2 hour non-stop joyride cruising at variable speed of 35-50 kph, crisscrossing davao streets of matina, ecoland, downtown, agdao, bajada, lanang, and buhangin.

TIP: do this at around 9:30 pm sunday, kasi you will need to cruise at around 35 to 50 kmh non stop for you to complete this activity in 2 1/2 hours. kung pabagal bagal ka (of course with caution and back to 0-5 kph sa mga intersections, traf lights are blinking red mode during this hour), aabutin ka ng siyam siyam hahaha.

NOTE: ang iikutin natin ay URBAN AREAS ng davao ha, and that simply means along the roads are lots of buildings not just trees :)

Igacos real estates selling like hotcakes
By Carlo P. Mallo
October 02, 2007
Sunstar Online Davao

WITH the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) being dubbed as the next vacation hotspot of the country, real estate in the island is selling like hotcakes.

Even agricultural estates are subdivided into smaller lots and sold for residential use.

Prices of real estate properties in the Island Garden City of Samal skyrocketed after it was "discovered" and was dubbed to be the next hottest piece of property in the country.

"It is in violation of the zonal classification laws," Rose Taasan said in Monday's Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City Davao. Taasan added that such activities are already being closely monitored right now.

"The city of Samal is primarily composed of agricultural areas, however, with the boom of the area, it was greatly affected by the high demand for land in the island," Taasan said.

"The local government unit of Igacos has already required that all lands be registered with them in order for them to monitor," Taasan said.

But Taasan made it clear that a P2 billion real estate investment of one of the country's largest real estate developers has duly complied with the zonal system of the island city.

^^ hmmmmmm is this 2 billion real estate project a new one? or eto yung Kembali ng Filinvest!

whoa....Davao is soaring high..... let's do a quick recap for this week's news updates:

- Marco Polo will invest atleast 300 million pesos for the hotel expansion.
- The construction of a Marco Polo Convention Center.
- The opening of Microtel Inn and construction of a mini convention center for a smaller market.
- The construction of Mindanao's first and only yacht club and marina development with residential villas, resort and a high rise building!

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... Davao is obviously the investment hub of choice in Mindanao! :okay:

Ganito na ang Davao ngayon, I'm sure it would go bigger and stronger in the years to come!

^^ That's correct! :okay: With or without the bridge....NOTHING WILL STOP DAVAO and its cities!

Maybe it's just me, but I can really sense that Davao is now awake from the local government to the business sector and the Dabawenyos! WE ARE NOW WIDE AWAKE in every sector! The tourism office of Davao is now doing certain activities to further develop our unstoppable tourism industry, the city council has now lined up its plans and projects for the next three years for davao's development (mostly geared towards economic and social development), the IT council of Davao is now alive and kicking with support from Davao's IT industry, the local government and business sector is working hand in hand to reach Davao's economic vision, and investors are now pouring their investments in Davao from real estate, agriculture, to ICT!

Davao Blooms as its orchids, soars as its eagles, and stands tall as our APO!

^^ oo nga....so whoa....could this be another surprise? wow!

Filinvest only invested P600 million pesos for this project....Malayo sa 2 Billion project ng "giant real estate" as posted sa news above :okay:

Filinvest unveils Samal Islands leisure-residential project

DAVAO CITY(Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- With beach facility as its anchor, Filinvest Land Inc. will develop a leisure-residential at the Island Garden City of Samal in a 50- hectares area with 1.8 kilometers beachline accessible to all lot owners.

Filinvest vice president for Visayas and Mindanao Tristan Las Marias, during the project launch of Kembali Coast at the Waterfront Insular Hotel on Sunday, said investment fund would cost about P600 million to fully develop the area.

Las Marias believes there is a big market niche in Davao City and the whole of the island.

He said Kembali Coast carries an Asian-island-Balinese theme with accents to hype beach ambiance.

He said this is the first of its kind in Mindanao and is accessible by a 15-minute speedboat ride from Davao City to the site at the Kaputian.

The resort ambiance, he said, is what many are looking for, and their market, other than the Overseas Filipino Workers, are those from the neighboring areas of General Santos City, Marbel in South Cotabato even as he said that they are targeting 20 percent of the local residents and another 30 percent from those market outside Mindanao.

"It is the lifestyle actually that we are going to offer to the buyers and this start the moment they step on the boat as they travel in 30 minutes towards their home destination where they are treated like kings and queens, an experience they would want to enjoy," he said.

Chinatown in D.C. is a small but terrible, historic neighborhood hehe

below is one of the Chinese gates built over Magsaysay Ave. Other prominent landmarks include the metrobank tower :), nccc main, Chimes mall, davao central high (formerly known as chinese school), grand mercure, cybercity callcenter (g-com), international banks, luxurius restaurants :) and other establishments almost all of which are owned by chinese families. goys apil ba ang mental hospital sa china town.?

(a scan from a photograph made with a cheap pre-digital panoramic camera) This was taken in 1998. We had made the journey home to my hometown in Mindanao, southern Philippines, for my parents' 50th wedding anniversary. On the way back to Manila, we took the superferry from Davao City. While still docked at Davao, these Badjaos arrived in their little bangkas or outriggers, to sell corals and shells as souvenirs to the ship's passengers. The young boys on the left side of the photograph were local children who dived for coins tossed into the water.

Literary Reference in Pictures

Often it seems the more that people become urbanised, the more they want about them talismans of nature on their walls, their shelves, their keyrings. Many souvenirs are marks of pilgrimage, like religious relics, and denote travel. Many of these talismans come from the sea. They are tokens of lineage and are to Homo what a family crest is to an aristocrat. The blood line lives on. Yet perversely, this importing from one universe to another, from water to air, is invariably fatal. Nothing looks as dead as a seashell in suburbia, a piece of coral skeleton or a stuffed fish. The otherness of a shark's tooth, like that of a fossil, begins to ebb the moment it is held in the hand. Objets trouvés should be marvelled at, then allowed to become perdus at once. Only thus can the transient pleasure of crossed trajectories be sustained in the memory.

SARA DUTERTE:

No more squatters at city coastline

Touched by their plight, Vice Mayor Sara Duterte said she would find a relocation site for coastline squatters buffeted by the painful yearly ritual of seeing their houses demolished by strong waves.

Several dozen families fled their houses the past days in Bucana in Quezon Blvd. as giant monsoon waves lashed the city?s coastlines. The waves come in September and October, and regularly activate relief operations for the displaced families.

As city disaster units and relief teams tended yesterday to the families finding temporary refuge in barangay halls and covered courts, Duterte, who is the acting mayor, said she would bar the return of the displaced families to the coastline.

We will find a temporary place for them to stay and then we will find a permanent home for them, she said.

The coastline dwellers, mostly fishermen, have the habit of rebuilding makeshift houses after the sea have calmed down.

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte had worried about the situation of the coastal dwellers but unlike the vice mayor, he was apprehensive of relocating them.

Their livelihood is fishing and it would be difficult we send them to areas where they could lose their livelihood, the mayor said last year as monsoon waves send the coastal families to safer grounds.

The mayor had offered housing lots in upland relocation sites but there were apparently few takers as the fishermen rebuilt their houses to endure another round of giant waves as soon as September comes.

Shelter Code

Ok expected tomorrow

With only five sections left for discussion, the Davao City Council is expected to approve tomorrow during session the landmark City Shelter Code.

Last week, city councilors in its second section-by-section deliberation on the code addressing urban housing problems, approved Section 21 leaving only 5 sections to be discussed.

We expect to complete tackling the remaining five sections today. If we can do that, then we have reached the finish line and we could approve the code, said councilor Arnolfo Ricardo Cabling, main proponent of the measure.

As expected members of the Shelter Code Coalition, which strongly lobbied for the code, would be attending today?s session to lend support to the landmark ordinance crafted by urban poor associations and key national housing agencies.

Majority of the councilors have supported the ordinance that hit a snag when first vetoed by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte after being approved by the 14th City Council.

It has been repassed as a new item in the 15th City Council after legal loopholes pointed out by the city legal office have been corrected.

Davao Park Soon to Have a Name

Last September 30 was the deadline of the submission of entries for the “Name The Park” contest courtesy of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. Davao residents can no longer submit their entry form starting October 1. All we have to do right now is to wait for the announcement of the winner during the formal opening this December and off course the baptism of the Park for finally having a NAME. I wonder who will win…… hope its going to be me because I need that P50T badly…. hehehe.

http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/5416/park09jo3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I went there last Sunday enjoying the park once again realizing how great the park is, and uhmmmm ….. I’m not sure guys but it feels like I’m somewhere in Europe like in Austria, Switzerland or France when I am there.

For some update, the Aquarium, the 3-storey high waterfalls, the articial river, and the fountain are almost complete. The children’s playground is already functional too (only few finishing touches are required) and I’ve seen little children playing there already. The Durian dome however, though almost complete, wasn’t touch by any new developments. Though the building is already used as the park’s office but I just wonder how those spiky roof would look like when its done. It supposed to look like a Durian fruit so it should look so COOOOL!

Davao power, land rates higher than Indonesia, Brazil
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE Board of Investment (BOI) in Mindanao said that the high rates in power and land are the reasons why some investors become "hesitant" in putting up a business in Davao City.

"The CJ Corporation, one of the biggest food companies in Korea, has a plan to invest P1.5 billion for a processing of sugar that will be extracted from coconut shells, in terms of raw materials, our coconut in Mindanao yielded higher sugar content than those of tyhe products in Indonesia and Brazil where they also proposed to establish a plant, but our power and land rate here is higher compared to these countries. This is why the Koreans try to look for some locations somewhere in Panabo City which offer cheaper price," Gil Dureza, BOI head in Mindanao, said.

Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007

Dureza said the land rate in Indonesia and Brazil was placed at US$40 per square meter, while in Davao City real estate rate was estimated at US$60 per square meters.

Dureza added that Koreans still displayed their intentions in putting up a plant in Davao Region. He said the CJ Corporation really plans to put up three factories, one in Indonesia, one in Brazil and one in Davao Region-Philippines.

"They are now on the process of pilot testing of the raw materials, the next stage will possibly be the buying of raw materials, and then construction of the plant, the target date was January next year," Dureza said.

It was learned that the processing plant would be a five-hectare plant.

Beach View Resort
By Jojie Alcantara
Witerary

PERHAPS to most people in Davao, Beach View Resort (BVR) will sound new, but this resort has been around for several years now, and is very popular among locals in Tagum City and its neighboring municipalities, and Compostela Valley as a prime beach destination in their area.

The three-hectare lot in Pindasan, Mabini was acquired by Alan Omandac whose family has a penchant for exploring beach resorts.

Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007

So, initially he created their private rest house, only to transform it later to a commercial beach resort in 1993 when people started coming in for a little R&R and were willing to pay for it.

The resort is endowed with a white sand beach front, and irresistibly cool waters good for swimming. There are century-old trees and mangroves scattered around the area, providing comfortable shade for the huts.

The venue is ideal for seminars (two spacious function halls at P1,500-P2,500) and family picnics (4 big pavilions at P800-P1,000), whether in large or small groups.

A fascinating lagoon surrounds the area, which is uncommon in other resorts. Huts, cottages, and tables along the shore cost anywhere from P450-P70.

Another remarkable attraction in BVR is a view of the white sand beauty, Kopiat Island, which is just a pump boat ride across from BVR. Its amazing coral reefs are perfect for underwater dipping or snorkeling.

BVR offers a 30-minute scenic island tour around the mangroves of Kopiat island via motorized pump boats at P10 to P15 per head.

BVR has amenities for the young ones too, like a playground for beach volleyball, videoke machines for the aspiring warblers, and a canteen for food and drinks. Apart from a wide and secure parking space, the bathrooms and restrooms are clean and are provided with unlimited natural spring water from its big reservoir).

BVR is strategically located along the coastal area of Purok Baybay, barangay Pindasan, in the municipality of Mabini, and province of Compostela Valley.
It takes an hour and a half drive from Davao City via private vehicle and only 30 minutes from Tagum City.

Public transportation plies the highway to and from the municipality of Mabini, including buses, jeepneys and habal-habal (motorcycles).

Entrance fees cost P20 for adults, P10 for children, and P50 per head for overnight charge and use of any cottage except for function halls.

Palad Brothers to join ‘Una Ka Bai’
By Chris Te Fabian Published : 2007-10-02

THE singing Agdao junkyard kids will soon become certified Kapuso stars.

While GMA Davao has yet to announce the names of personalities set to host its upcoming early morning magazine show, the talented Palad Brothers are already in as cast-members of the show.

The entertaining tandem of the serious Dariel John "John-John" and the wacky Jundrel "Jun-Jun" will become regulars of the Kapuso show Una Ka Bai, talent discoverer John Paul "JP" Seniel told the crowd during the Teach Your Children benefit show organized by the Samahan ng mga Musikeros sa Davao, Inc. (Samadhi) last Sunday night at Matina Town Square.

Seniel, reporter of the GMA afternoon news show Testigo, told TIMES that the team managing them is already processing the working papers of the two boys.

The brothers rocked the Taboan of MTS in the first ever major concert they participated in. Other children-musicians in the city also performed in the show.

Fellow musicians and the audience were wowed by the performance of John-John, 8, and younger brother Jun-Jun, 7.

The two children were the most applauded performers during the event. The children got a royal treatment from the not-so-very-appreciative MTS crowd.

The Palad Brothers were the first local act to have the spectators with camera to crowd below the stage to take photos of the children. Such practice is oftentimes only experienced by performers from Manila.

Seniel, an award-winning short-film director, is also doing a documentary of the two children for a theatrical release.

Seniel discovered the two children just outside the Sta. Police Station in the evening of Sept. 4 while the two kids were serenading by-passers for alms.

Since Seniel featured the two in Testigo, offers and donations pour in to the poor but musically-gifted children.

Baywalk young rapper act clicks in Youtube
Published : 2007-10-01

A short clip featuring a boy rapping beside the controversial Statue of David in Baywalk area of Queensland, Times Beach, Matina became a hit in Youtube.

The boy, around 10 years old and only identified himself as Joel, rapped about Statue of David. The statue became a debated item among the city councilors when it was built in 2005.

You can watch the video on http://youtube.com/watch?v=2-7OkvB6h1A.

The one-minute flick has already generated about 10,500 hits since it was posted last May 21 by TIMES columnist and ABS-CBN host Ian Ray Garcia. The clip has generated 47 positive comments, and has been voted as favorite by 42 watchers.

The rap boy flick is the most viewed and most discussed among the videos posted by Garcia. It got more hits that Garcia's clippings of his Luwag ni Ian segment in Dinhing Dapita Sadya (DDS) which aired over ABS-CBN every Sunday.

The Funny Bisaya Rap at the Statue of David is also one of the most watched video under the "Bisaya Rap" category. It ranked ninth in the category.

It is about to overtake (in term of popularity) another related video posted by newspaper editor Jon Joaquin about two young boys rapping for alms in nearby beach.

Joaquin's Beach Rap by Kids ((http://youtube.com/watch?v=0nI5j--lRB4) ranked third in the “Bisaya Rap” category. It generated 13,000 clicks since it was posted on May 18 of 2006.

In the said category, Thavawenyoz is still the most viewed and most favorite item. The rap duo's video for Huni-winning Mao Kaha Kini Ang Gugma (http://youtube.com/watch?v=q4dH_jjfLR8) got around 28,000 hits since August 2, 2006.

Most of entries in “Bisaya Rap” category are from Cebu.

^^ if they find DC expensive, then they can invest in the nearby cities like panabo, tagum, sta. cruz and digos or better yet, invest in the other minda provinces (and again experience the "work availability-manpower skills mismatch" -> a dilemma being experienced by Hanjin at the moment)... ... these koreans should understand that davao is the only highly urbanized city in mindanao (not to mention the fact that davao is the single biggest source of highly qualified/skilled workers in the island)... as such they should expect land prices (and labor wages) among other things, to be high here ... imo lang...

Hyatt chain to open 4 new RP hotels
Microtel

http://www.goodnewspilipinas.com/docs/biz_progress/current/microtel.html

International hotel chain Microtel Inn and Suites part of the Global Hyatt Hotel Group is simultaneously openING four new hotels across the region next year.

The announcement comes at the heels of the opening of the hotel's sixth location in the Philippines. Over the weekend, Microtel Davao owned by the Floirendo family opened its doors.

The four new hotels will be located at Mactan, Cabanatuan, SM Mall of Asia and in Puerto Prinsesa, Palawan. Combined, the soon to rise hotels will have 410 rooms. With the average investment of P1.6 million per room, total project cost is estimated at P656 million.

In an interview, Microtel Development president Jose Mari del Rosario said the Microtel Mactan and Microtel Cabanatuan will be the first two to open in June. The Mactan location will have 160 rooms while the Cabanatuan branch has 50.

Next is the 50 room Microtel Puerto Prinsesa in October while the Mall of Asia hotel will be ready for occupancy in the last quarter of next year.

The hotel will be strategically located near the SMX Convention Center and the SM Mall of Asia. SM BayCentral is being packaged as Metro Manila's premier business and tourism district. SM BayCentral covers 60 hectares of prime reclaimed land along the coast of Manila Bay, offering choice locations for business, tourism, retail and leisure projects, SM Investments said. The central attraction of the area is the SM Mall of Asia, the SM group's biggest shopping mall.

At the same time, Del Rosario bared the hotel's five-year plan. By 2012, he said Microtel will be present in four more locations in Metro Manila excluding Mall of Asia and several other provinces.

Locations being considered in the metropolis are the business districts of Makati and Ortigas; Alabang, an emerging business district; and Timog in Quezon City.

In Mindanao, he said they are planning to put up hotels in Cagayan de Oro and General Santos City. Two provinces in Bicol are being looked at namely Naga and Legaspi. Even before the Mactan branch is completed, del Rosario said the group is considering putting up another in the City proper of Cebu.

In Northern Luzon meanwhile, Microtel is considering Laoag and Angeles City, Pampanga.

The fast expansion of Mircotel in the country, del Rosario said is because all the Microtel hotels enjoy 65 percent to 70 percent occupancy rate. "It's a good product and the concept really works," he explained.

According to him, Microtel remains to be a no frills hotel. It does not operate any restaurants and all services are outsourced.

The newest Microtel to open in the country is in Davao. The 50-room hotel is the closest hotel to the international airport. It is located near rows of restaurants at the Damosa Complex.

To further boost occupancy of Microtel Davao, a convention center which can accommodate 100 people will open behind the hotel in December.

Davao City’s shelter ordinance gets council nod again
By Grace L. Plata

DAVAO CITY -- The proposed Comprehensive Urban Shelter and Services Development Code of Davao City, otherwise known as the Shelter Code, was passed by the City Council in the second reading Tuesday after four long weeks of going through each section carefully.

Sections 21 to 26 were approved Tuesday with only minor amendments and clarifications from the body.

These included provisions on establishing a trust fund earmarked for housing projects.

Section 22 provided that the city housing authority will be the implementing arm for the program while the soon-to-be established Local Housing Board will be the policy-making body.

Section 23 orders the coordination of special committees while Sections 24-26 are standard requirements on publication and effectivity.

Councilor Arnolfo Rocardo Cabling, chair of the City Council committee on housing, rural and urban development and proponent of the Shelter Code, said he is hoping that this time the City Legal Office would not find legal infirmities in the ordinance, which was why the Shelter Code was vetoed in the past council.

"With the collective effort of our legislators, murag wala na gyud siguro'y problema (it appears that this one will no longer have any problem)," Cabling said.

He also said prior to recommending for the mayor's veto, City Legal Officer Melchor Quitain called him up and suggested to only have the corrected points incorporated and pass the measure under suspended rules.

"Pero okay ra man pud na ing-ani ang nahimo process (I appreciate the process we had to go through) so that the body can really appreciate the full content of the ordinance through discussion," Cabling said.

Groups rallying for the passage of the Shelter Code lauded the approval.

Conrado Sillada of the Shelter Code Alliance said his group is quite confident that the City Legal Office would not find any more flaws in the ordinance and will recommend for its approval by the mayor.

If it so happens, the Shelter Code will be touted as the first landmark legislation passed by the 15th council.

Second reading approval means the ordinance is virtually approved as third reading in the council is but a formality where the new ordinance's title is announced as a duly approved ordinance. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)

Business-name registration in Davao increases
DavaoToday.com
October 3, 2007 | 9:12 am

DAVAO CITY — The Department of Trade and Industry in Davao City already surpassed as of September 2007 its business name registration performance compared to the same period last year.

DTI Davao City director Teolulo Pasawa, during the Davao Business Reports Forum held Tuesday at MediSpa of SM City Davao, said they were able to register some 4,810 new business names compared to only 4,530 in the same period of 2006.

Pasawa noted that the investment climate this year remains bright considering that many businesses are into expansion projects.

“The fact that these businesses are into opening up of new branches is an indication that the business climate is favorable,” he said.

He also said that the coming in of HEDCOR power project is in preparation of the coming in of new investments saying that the Department of Energy had made pronouncements that there must be sufficient power to prepare the area for the entry of new players in the industry.

“If new investments will come before 2010 there will be shortage of power,” he said.

Pasawa mentioned that new projects in Davao city, aside from power would fall under wood, banana, coconut peat and fiber, cold storage, plastic recycling, feed mill, food processing and call center operations.

He also said that the mining industry is picking as there are already many mining exploration within the region especially in Compostela Valley Province.

He said that under their industry cluster approach, the big works are in mining as reported by the Bureau of Mines where current investments totaled to P449 million.

The wood sector also reported P70 million investments for two wood processing plants all located in Compostela Valley Province. (PIA XI/prixdbanzon)

We are Mindanao Island's / the Southern Philippines' Convention Capital!

Just this October alone, we do not only host NATIONAL or REGIONAL but also INTERNATIONAL conventions. Some of these are:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/mict.jpg

^^ Here's a fact...most of the Mindanaowide business groups and initiatives were born and first conceptualized in Davao. One of them is the Mindanao ICT Summit. Born and first staged in DAVAO....and now it's back home! Davao is known for raising the bar! This time around, MICT Summit goes global with attendees from the entire BIMP Region and other countries!

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/bimpicon.jpg

Anchored on the BIMP-EAGA Development Roadmap 2006-2010, the BIMP Investment Conference(BIMP-iCon) is one of the highlights of the forthcoming Senior Officials and Ministers' Meeting this 24-26 October 2007.

The BIMP-EAGA Business Council (BEBC) spearheads the conduct of the BIMP iCon and is ably suppported by the focal organization in the Philippines, the Mindanao Business Council (MinBC), the Development Partners and the Governments of the member countries.

Another first from us!......Born and will be first staged in DAVAO! :okay:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/date2007.jpg

This year’s theme “Invest in Davao- Gateway to BIMP-EAGA” will aid the transformation of Davao City as an investment hub within the BIMP Region as DATE 2007 coincides with the BIMP-EAGA Business and Investment Forum. This event will pave the way for more international business opportunities and linkages between Davao City and the participating countries.

:| :| :| ^^ Take note.....wala pa ang mga upcoming convention centers ng Marco Polo, SM City, and those which were proposed! Wala pa nga ang Davao International Convention Center.....however, WE ARE TRULY and DEFINITELY THE CONVENTION DESTINATION OF CHOICE BY INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITIES!!!! how much more when these convention centers will be built na! :| :| :|

Identifying seven approved projects as of October 1, 2007 with total investments of P3.9 billion he said HEDCOR power project in Calinan, Davao City is the biggest with infuse investment of P3.680 billion.

The Citra Mina project on food processing comes next with P167 million for its expansion all over Mindanao.

Pag-Ibig XI wins Civil Service distinction
by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (2 October) -- The Home Development Mutual Fund or Pag-IBIG in Region XII was awarded the CSC Seal of Frontline Service Excellence after going through assessment by a volunteer team of the Civil Service Commission (CSC).

The award of Pag IBIG Fund, the lone awardee in Region XII, was conferred on the occasion of the 107th Philippine Civil Service Anniversary on September 21, 2007 in Cotabato City through officer-in-charge Noli Armada and vice president for Mindanao Jose W. Banzon, Jr.

CSC chairperson Karina Constantino-David issued the award to the Fund for exemplars in the delivery of frontline services as tested by the Public Service Delivery Audit/Assistance (PASADA) Volunteers.

The Fund was assessed in terms of providing service, structures, systems and procedures and the physical condition.

The value of customer care of the Fund as well as meeting the expectations of the transacting public for prompt, courteous, responsive, facilitative and pleasant service were also factors considered in the award.

Under the PASADA, the CSC places premium in promoting morale, efficiency, integrity, responsiveness and courtesy in government service.

The PASADA is a proactive mechanism installed to address the problems wrought by inefficiency at the government's first line of contact with the citizenry.

PASADA provides a mechanism through which the performance of government frontline services can be systematically checked and evaluated.

The program operates on a simple strategy where a pool of volunteers or Public Service Monitors checks and tests out public services.

Pag-IBIG Fund XII getting the CSC Seal of Frontline Service Excellence as an additional recognition will be part of the nationwide publicity of best practices in the bureaucracy. (PIA XI) [top]

DTI XI surpasses performance on business name registration

Davao City (3 October) -- The Department of Trade and Industry in Davao City as of September 2007 already surpassed its business name registration performance compared to the same period last year.

DTI Davao City director Teolulo Pasawa during the Davao Business Reports Forum held Tuesday at MediSpa of SM City Davao said that as of end September this year they were able to register some 4,810 new business names compared to only 4,530 in the same period of 2006.

Pasawa noted that the investment climate this year remains bright considering that many businesses are into expansion project.

"The fact that these businesses are into opening up of new branches is an indication that the business climate is favorable," he said.

He also said that the coming in of HEDCOR power project is in preparation of the coming in of new investments saying that the Department of Energy had made pronouncements that there must be sufficient power to prepare the area for the entry of new players in the industry.

"If new investments will come before 2010 there will be shortage of power," he said.

(PIA XI/Prix D Banzon) [top]

Davaoeño tops geodetic eng'g exam
by Fr. Rubans with John Frances Fuentes, Davao City Herald

Davao City (2 October) -- This city, once again, made history when a graduate from John Paul II College of Davao tops this year's Geodetic Engineer Licensure Examination given by the Board of Geodetic Engineering in Manila this September 2007.

Alfredo Cahiles Gaborne, Jr., from Calinan, Davao City, together with Nebo Allen Manuales Torres, from Negros Oriental State University, Dumaguete, bested 421 others including examinees from UP Diliman, known to have topped the said exam for the past years, with an 86.80 rating.

Now on its third batch of graduates in the said course, JPIICD has already produced nine geodetic engineers, two of which - including Gaborne - made it to the top 10.

It can be recalled that during the first batch in 2005, Engr. Pijie Piñero, now teaching in his alma mater, also landed the 4th place in the 2005 geodetic licensure exam.

Mr. Ernie Evangelista, the college president, said that to intensify the administration's commitment of providing excellent quality education to its students, a 7-storey building will be constructed.

Archbishop Fernando R. Capalla of Davao led the ground breaking ceremony after the Mass he presided last September 28, in which he emphasized that "giving quality education is one way of showing authentic love of neighbor".

Gaborne will fly to Manila to take his oath before the Board on Sunday, October 21 at the Manila Hotel.

Gaborne is planning to put up a surveying firm here in Davao City, where he noted that there are less surveying offices. He said that the practice of the said profession is not so common in the urban area. (dcherald) [top]

Davao steadies call-center manpower sources
by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (4 October) -- Operators of call centers that are eyeing Davao City as their future sites needs an assurance of steady source of manpower.

But Department of Trade and Industry Davao City director Teolulo Pasawa disclosed that measures are being worked out to ensure that investors could easily get quality human resource for their operation.

He said in Davao City, one major call center operator, the Cybercity has forged an agreement with the Commission on Higher Education here for the adoption of their English proficiency which allows students to take it as an elective course.

Not only that Pasawa said the CHED likewise declared four of the schools in Davao City as ICT Center for Development namely Ateneo de Davao University, University of the Immaculate Concepcion, University of the Philippines Mindanao and the University of Mindanao.

Pasawa likewise said that the Japanese government knowing that the Philippine National IT Standards Foundation, Inc. (PHILNITS) which undertakes accreditation of individuals with IT knowledge here in order to determine their level of competency will use the center to improve literacy rate especially of teachers in IT schools.

He said a team from Japan will be sent here to support PHILNITS in their project with the DTI.

The first training at Philnits will be on November 12-29 and among the participants are professors of computer schools.

Meanwhile Pasawa said the Davao region has a total of 1,000 seats operated by two big call centers and one small-size ten-seater call center in Tagum City.

He said that two centers in Davao City are already working on their expansion. Cybercity formerly known as G-Com is working on its capacity to 2,000 seats. The other center Link2Support will move up to 1,000 seats capacity once it opens to expansion this year.

Cybercity has a current seat capacity of 450 while Link2Support with 250.

Pasawa said other than the 10-seat E-Aroma of Tagum City there are still other smaller call centers registered recently with the DTI whose capacity varies from 10 to 60 seats. (PIA XI) [top]

New Bankerohan bridge feared to miss Davao mayor's deadline

Davao City (4 October) -- City Traffic czar Celso Gempesaw said that he is unsure if the Department of Public Work and Highways (DPWH) can beat the imposed deadline of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte which wanted the bridge to be finished by April.

The City Mayor then has wanted the bridge to be completed by December but with a change in bridge design and specifications specifically ordered by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo which changed the original plan from a steel bridge to an all-concrete infrastructure, Mayor Duterte moved his deadline to a latter date.

According to Gempesaw, the contract to build the bridge has not yet been awarded to the winning contractor. The Traffic Management Center head says that infrastructure projects worth more than P50-million are bidded in the DPWH Central Office in Manila. He says that there have already been winning bidders but the contract has not yet been awarded.

However, according to Gempesaw despite the delay, DPWH-Southern Mindanao Director Hadji Pundidato Mitmug has assured him that the bridge will be completed by April next year. But Gempesaw said he cannot be assured unless the bridge construction will start.

Constructed 58 years ago as it replaced the wooden bridge destroyed by the Japanese Army during World War II. Governor Generoso Bridge was rendered impassable last April when one of its posts broke down, weakening its structure. A new-generation Governor Generoso bridge was given an estimated budget of P350-million.
Gempesaw however says that though his office has not received communication on the start of the bridge's construction, there are signs in which it will be happening soon. And one of which was the relocation of the high-tension wires of the Davao Light and Power Company then located under the second Generoso Bridge. The move necessitated the closure of the second bridge to vehicular traffic last Sept. 23-24.

According to Gempesaw the DPWH doesn't want a repeat of what happened when they constructed the Ma-a Bridge located in the City's Diversion road when three of its workers where electrocuted as one of the heavy equipment came in contact with the DLPC's live wire. (PIA XI) [top]
