View Full Version : Davao City and Samal Island
KulasKusgan April 10th, 2006, 03:27 PM Hello sa tanan,
Happy LA is also involved in preservation of fruit bats. Incidentally while in Samal last Sunday I heard that National Geographic is sending a team to Davao to study two hereinto undiscovered bats in the Davao area. Anyone who who any details about this?
In another development this one is another good news (http://www.funchain.com/~peterlavina) for Davao. :)

Viva Macau - challenging paradigms
by: City Councilor Peter 'Konsehal' Laviña (http://www.funchain.com/post/0000002339)
Prior to the opening of the new Davao (Bangoy) International Airport in late 2003, we sought the declaration of Davao as a "pocket open skies area." This is to allow foreign airlines to fly in even beyond the scope of bilateral air agreements between the Philippines and other countries.
I authored at least two measures in the City Council to this effect. One on seeking Davao representation in the country's air negotiating panel to promote our city in bilateral air talks. The other, on the issuance of an executive order to effect an "open skies" regime in Davao. With the help of the Freedom to Fly Coalition, I prepared a draft EO and sent it to Malacanang. Medco chair Jess Dureza was kind enough to endorse it.
We were a few months behind this effort than Clark (Diosdado Macapagal International Airport). Fortunately for them, Malacanang granted Clark an "open skies" policy. The rest, as they say, is now history. Clark is now serviced by many foreign airlines.
Davao was left behind for three years now.
We are now reviving this campaign. A new core group was formed last week and we need all the help to seek this "open skies" regime. If we are to position our city as de facto center of the BIMP-EAGA and southern gateway of the country, we must promote the establishment of more air and sea links with our regional neighbors and other mega-tourism hubs.
We can achieve spectacular growth in our tourist arrivals only if our airport is served by more foreign airlines.
We need more airlines to service Davao not only to bring in the tourists and vice versa, but also to generate more revenues for the upkeep of the airport. Was it not embarrassing at one time when no less than the Malacanang chief stumbled on one of the airport comfort rooms without toilet paper!
Now, because of the government's failure to lure more airlines to use the spanking new airport, travelers will shoulder maintenance cost by way of the unconscionable rise in terminal fees. From P40 to P200 ($0.80 - $4).
Another strong reason why we need the "open skies" policy for Davao is its important link to the Middle East where most of our OFWs work. My own estimate is a third of them are from Mindanao. They can leave and go home directly from Davao if we have links with regional airport hubs like KL and Bangkok on their way to the Gulf area, and even to Europe. Our OFWs would be able to save more than $200 in by-passing congested NAIA in Manila.
On this regard, we are most happy about a new budget carrier in Macau which is exploring the potentials of servicing our city. Officials of Viva Macau will visit Davao next week to scout our city, and confer with local officials and travel and tourism industry players.
The former Portuguese enclave could very well serve, along with Nanning, as our gateway to China.
Viva Macau sets out to challenge some of the travel industry's established paradigms. So are we.

Good morning Dinabaw Interesting to read about the biodiversity of Davao city. For me it is a very exotic place from all I see in pictures and read about it in this forum. It is sure more exciting then to go to a commercial tourist promotion office. Tourists like form my part of the world are fachinated by the unique everyday life of the Fhilippines, what I mean is what you are and what you have natrualy there. The commercial tourism that has been a part of Europe so long has made most people here feed up with the overexposure to artificial toursim. Of course there is always a group of people who will go for that but there is a big and becoming bigger group of people who will not go on those type of vacations, that is a rip off more then anything. In essens it is better to build up a tourism around all your unique qualities that is the hard work, but you can not go worng.
Thanx miss scandinavia!

Talking of colors, like blonds, scandinavian girl and dinabaw, here's a knock-out piece about colors:
This poem was written by an African kid.

> "When I born, I Black,
> When I grow up, I Black,
> When I go in Sun, I Black,
> When I scared, I Black,
> When I sick, I Black,
> And when I die, I still black..
>
> And you White fella,
> When you born, you Pink,
> When you grow up, you White,
> When you go in Sun, you Red,
> When you cold, you Blue,
> When you scared, you Yellow,
> When you sick, you Green,
> And when you die, you Gray..
>
> And you calling me Colored?!"

The poem, I have it hanging in my teachers office, it is great isn´t it? Being a white person, I can admit to all the colors but yellow or green, never had those colors befor ...and not grey, not yet at least.
I am glad you did not mean to offend me Kansehal, I feel somewhat pale in here and it is certainly so much nicer to live and be in a world were we all accept each others differences, isn´t it?
Whising you a good day! :)

Philippines Promotes Davao City As Tourist Destination
DAVAO CITY, April 10 Asia Pulse - The Department of Tourism (DoT) has strengthened the promotion of the city as one of the top destinations in the country this year.
Susan del Mundo, Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation (PCVC) head, said there is already an order from Tourism Secretary Ace Durano to include Davao City as a major focus in the Philippine tourism promotion.
Del Mundo said as a starting point, Durano has ordered the country's foreign attache to include the city in the invitation of program for foreign visitors.
She said this means Davao City will be one of the places that tourists would go once they come to the country. The invitations would be sent to foreign media, tour operators and tourists particularly in Japan, South Korea and China.
Davao City is considered as one of the premiere destinations in the country along with Boracay, Cebu, Bohol and Palawan.
Also, Del Mundo said the city is among the places chosen for DOTs Global Classroom for Peace program, which aims to invite over 100 teachers from the United States of America to come over to the country and interact with local teachers and students.
She said they are particularly targeting public schools and schools where indigenous peoples attend. The foreign teachers could also teach in the chosen schools.
The DoT is targeting to invite every month 10 teachers who would stay for nine days.
"The more interesting part about it is the documentation of the American educators visit which would be shown in the top-rated show of Oprah Winfrey in September," Del Mundo said.
In April 9-10 this year, an advance team will come to conduct an inspection and then the crew will follow for the documentation, Del Mundo added.
Del Mundo, along with other local business leaders, organized the recently concluded 1st Tourism Jobs Fair at NCCC Mall here.

Davao IT plan projects P1B new investments
DAVAO CITY -- The information and communications technology industry sector in the city in particular, and the entire Davao Region in general, has drafted a plan that targets up to P1 billion in new investments in the next four years.
It is also projecting 16,000 new jobs during the period with about 1,000 small and medium enterprises starting in this industry.
But Teololu Pasawa, information technology industry cluster co-chairman and Trade and Industry Davao City Field Office chief, said the industry must first be able to improve the image of the entire region as good area of investment. "There is an impression from outsiders that our area is unstable for investments. This is not true, but we have to exert our efforts in erasing that impression," Mr. Pasawa said in a telephone interview.
The plan is to conduct marketing assistance to information technology companies and regularly hold events like expositions and seminars that will showcase the industry, the plan said. Promotional activities will also showcase local talents and developments through channels of information.
Another key strategy the sector has thought of is demonstrating information services to strategic areas and embarking on trade promotions to key hubs like China, India, US, Canada and Australia. The group will also organize the road shows that will showcase the region’s information technology sector.
In luring investors, the industry aims to designate "ICT aware" persons in key position and push local government units to grant special tax incentive packages for these companies.
In Davao City, for example, the city government, through its investment promotion board, has started discussions on including information technology in the list of preferred areas of investments that will enjoy a variety of tax and non-tax perks.
The sector also saw the need to improve the human resources. The proposal is for the Commission on Higher Education to come up with guidelines that will strengthen curricula intended to improve information technology courses, including English proficiency for students wanting to work in call centers and other similar companies.
Mr. Pasawa said the commission would evaluate the courses and task schools in the region to find ways to strengthen these courses. The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, information technology organizations and other groups will also administer manpower accreditation examinations to graduates.
The cluster, the plan pointed out, will also participate in "activities updating knowledge through training on new trends on a regular basis" and will advocate "provision of special loan funds to educational institutions and businesses for the purpose of upgrading of tools. The sector is also pushing for the establishment of information centers in key areas of the region, including formation of a database.
Based on the plan, the city has been identified as top destination for information technology related services in the country considering that the National Telecommunications Commissions, through Memorandum 05-05-200, declared the city as an information technology hub.
The sector players also pointed out that even using the Commission on Information and Communications Technology-developed scorecard, the city "ranks high as an attractive investment location in the country."
The plan also pointed out that the city has a good workforce potential, considering that based on a report as of January last year the region had 76 colleges and universities, with Davao City having 42.
Mr. Pasawa said the city has among the highest absorption rate in terms of graduates getting employed, particularly in the information technology industry. A top official of a call center earlier pointed out that graduates of Davao City schools would likely land in business process outsourcing related jobs if they intended to apply.
The city, the plan pointed out, already has available digital subscribers line considering the presence of big industry players that can provide such services "from fiber-optic links, wireless broadband, to simple and triple redundancy."
The planners also pointed out that the city still has huge spaces that could become locations to companies.
In terms of vendor support, Davao City hosts hardware and software companies that could cater to the needs of new investors, the plan added.
The city has also has ample source of stable power, with the Davao Light and Power Co., which gets power from the National Power Corp., has also its 44 megawatt stand-by plant that can be tapped in case of power outages.
The plan, however, pointed out that the city lacks a business zone, or industry park, and some companies are not also able to buy "cutting edge technology."
There is a also poor promotion of e-services.
Moreover, training of personnel is costly due to "job description unmatched with information technology curricula." -- Carmelito Q. Francisco

tj_brewed April 11th, 2006, 09:52 AM Manila craves for Davao cuisine
PIA (http://www.pia.gov.ph/news.asp?fi=p060411.htm&no=06)
April 11, 2006
Davao City (11 April) -- Davao folks will be introduced to what is an emerging Davao cuisine where several food lovers in Manila crave for the mouth-watering dishes during the recent food show at the Manila Intercontinental Hotel.
The popular Davao grown chef and consultant in Asia, Padi Lascano in an interview at SM City said Davao herbs and how it is being cooked makes Davao cuisine distinct.
He said this is influenced by the indigenous people of the region mostly from cooking techniques of the Bagobo, Mandaya, B'laan, Tausog, Subanon, and Mansaka. The Cebu cuisine he said is heavy on spices as it is more influenced by the Spanish.
He said through research and his immersion with the different tribes in the region made him discovered what could be attributed to be the Davao cuisine.
"What is distinguishing with our food is the blending of the herbs and other mix spices to the sauce," he said.
In preparing the food, he said there is no sautéing only mixing and boiling the different ingredient under a low fire.
"The Davao cuisine is processed only through boiling, broiling, grilling or baking and baking is done through wrapping the food with thick leaves and place under hot coal," he said.
"Heat should not be applied directly to the raw food and only the steam it produces is the one that make it done", he said.
He mentioned the most popular "Haob sa Odong" where the process is like cooking "Lasagna". Odong is the poor man's food introduced to the Philippines by the Japanese during the war. This is a layered food lined in between with "alugbati" leaves, the cooked noodles (Odong), sauce cooked in herbs, gizzard and liver, and covered on top with grated cheese.
There is also the "Kiarihan" where the meat used is either goat or chicken mixed with different herbs and little amount of the common spices and salt, he said.
To further develop the Davao cuisine, Marissa Te Eng Fo, event organizer of the Island Cuisine during the Dive the Gulf Festival 2006 said a competition will be held on April 27 at SM Entertainment Plaza to encourage Dabawenyos to "think Davao" cuisine as well as Mindanaoans to "think Mindanaoans".
She said they will be looking for cuisine using the natural products that abound the islands even as she said that they encourage competitiveness in the field of cuisine resulting in the evolution of Mindanao food.
She warned however not to use endangered species nor cause endangering species but to use only what are very abundant in the islands or in Davao City.
Participants are required to bring in their finished product, plated the way they want to be judged on April 28, 2006 at Waterfront Insular Hotel.
She said they want to bring up to 99 percent the use of Davao products in the food preparation and they are coordinating with the Restaurant Association of Davao in evolving the basic Davao food.

Davao City to host Human Resource Congress
PIA (http://www.pia.gov.ph/news.asp?fi=p060408.htm&no=11)
After the successful holding of the first tourism jobs fair, a national congress on human resource will be held in June this year in Davao City.
Susan del Mundo, officer-in-charge of travel and trade sales department of the Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation said this is an offshoot of the first-ever held tourism jobs fair for a continuing study of the needed resources that the industry needs.
"The needs of the market keeps on changing and we must be ready to respond to the demand," she said.
Del Mundo also said that during the congress, issues and concerns affecting the labor force of the tourism industry will be the main focus. Even as she said that it would be likely on the need for continuing training as well as looking into the curriculum offered by schools on tourism related courses.
She said this is one way of identifying the needs of both the employer and the worker in order to cut down on mismatch.
In support of the industry she said there is really a need to develop a training program and to also improve the tourism curriculum particularly on the syllabus because most on the school's course outline needs to be improved to suit the current trend.
She however said that upgrading skills of workers could be to their advantage even as she stressed that Filipinos are known internationally as hardworking, warm and hospitable.
She said the workers are at par with those in the international field plus the inherent traits that they possess but they have to have continuing training to remain fit to the job.
Meanwhile Del Mundo also announced the holding of BIMP EAGA jobs fair this year.
She said they are on the process of developing the mechanics and this will either be held in the months of July and August this year.
"We are now talking with the labor attaches in Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia for this particular event," she said.
She said they would be inviting tourism-related companies to join the fair and at the same time also invite them to come for possible investments.

Davao's Dive Gulf Festival
PIA (http://www.pia.gov.ph/news.asp?fi=p060411.htm&no=7)
Davao City (11 April) -- The coming "Dive the Gulf Festival" set on April 22-30 eyes coastal communities around Davao Gulf as chief beneficiaries in the current thrust of the Department of Tourism to promote Davao Gulf as a premium diving destination.
According to DOT regional director Sonia Garcia, coastal communities in the Davao Region, including Samal Islands, will soon realize that their areas can be developed into potential dive spots as well as excellent venues for other aquasports like skimboarding and the like.
"Dive the Gulf Festival," Director Garcia said, offers an opportunity for coastal community stakeholders not only to develop their communities as perfect destination for aquasports but also address the urgent concern on the protection and conservation of their coastal resources.
The week-long festival will tackle relevant issues like sustainability of the Davao Gulf, aside from highlighting the vast potentials of the Gulf as a primary dividing destination, anchored on DOT's "Island to Highland" promotional thrust.
"It's not only about diving but also about imperative concerns like the need for a continuing community education versus pollution, including "diving for a cause" aimed to dive for wastes under the sea," the DOT official said. The latter activity is an effort by scuba diving groups called "scubasurero." The concern for endangered sea mammals who go astray, are harmed or "beached" will also be tackled in the "Dive Congress," an important component of the Dive the Gulf Festival, now on its third year.
Local government units (LGU) participation fee will be P2,000 only with the following inclusions: a 3-day live-out seminar at the Waterfront Insular Hotel with hands-on training on either skimboarding, introduction to diving or how to save marine wildlife. Two (2) lucky congress participants could likewise win a roundtrip ticket to Palau via Asian Spirit taking the new Davao-Palau route.
Other interesting activities include: Roro Cruise for a Cause in Opening Day aboard a ferry (April 22) which is also World Earth Day: Mindanao Dive Congress (April 24-26) at Waterfront Insular Hotel, Battle of the Bars (with Bartending Competition) at the Venue (April 26); Dive the Gulf Festival Photo Contest (April 24-30) at the SM City Mall; Underwater Photography Lecture (April 27-28) at Waterfront Insular;
Island Culinary Competition (April 27) at SM City; Coastal Clean-up by the SK Federation (April 28) at Times Beach area; Caracoles Festival (April 28) at Waterfront Insular to be graced by celebrities from Manila; Artificial Reef Ceremonial Placement (April 29) to be led by DENR and Holcim; and Scubasurero on Samal beachlines (April 30). More particulars on the "Dive the Gulf Festival" may be addressed to DOT XI (tel. 2210070/2216955) c/o Eden Denden or Evelyn (PR-RGL/PIA XI)

Rajah_Soliman April 11th, 2006, 08:35 PM Yeah, Benjie (Jamie to his family)...Benjie was my senior at ADDU glee; known for his booming bass and I loved doing quartet with him (i was a tenor) in informal singing (under the addu talisay tree) eons ago.
Davao Eagle were you an ADDU Glee Club member between 1982 and 87? I'm getting curious... Benjie and I belong to the CCP-NAMCYA 85 Batch? I have a full digitally-remastered CD of that CCP performance which I copied from the CCP archive exactly a year ago with permission from CCP Pres. Jardin.
Do you want to have a WMA copy of them? (Modesty aside, we won (2nd runner-up behind UP-Diliman and an Ilo-ilo university) in the NAMCYA competition in 1985..the first NAMCYA Trophy for DAVAO as far as I know :)

Hi Rajah, nice to hear from you. What's your location by the way? I joined Carillon in 1987, 2nd sem- after being addu resident for 1 1/2 yrs. - per OSA req. Victory of addu glee was so fresh then that it rubbed on to neophytes like me. At that time Benjie was a regular glee alumnus together with Dan & Maricle Morales, Davy Ental, Manny Bondoc, William Pagaran, (bless his soul) et al- the glee spirit is hard to quash that that I for one kept coming to the rigors of nightly practice.
Know what? I wish to have a recording of all the songs we sang esp. the ones rearranged by the late reverend Fr. Marasigan but I think it ws Grace (wifey of Benjie) who had a copy and I didn't have the chance to hook up wit her on that. YESSSS! I would be do glad to have your WMA copy Rajah. I know you sang "Italian Salad" in that competition and my batch were raring to add it up to our repertoire then but "Fr. Mara" wanted to preserve the panache attached with the song with your batch enblazoned on it.
If you have other songs recordings of addu glee, please send them as well, dunno if you could send them all via e-mail though. Basta, whatever you can. Daghang Salamat, Rajah.

tj_brewed April 11th, 2006, 11:19 PM City is major focus in tourism promotion
Sunstar Online (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2006/04/12/bus/city.is.major.focus.in.tourism.promotion.html)
April 12 2006
THE Department of Tourism (DOT) has strengthened the promotion of the city as one of the top destinations in the country this year.
Susan del Mundo, Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation head, said there is already an order from Tourism Secretary Ace Durano to include Davao City as a major focus in the Philippine tourism promotion.
Del Mundo said that as a starting point, Durano has ordered the country's foreign attaché to include the city in the invitation of program for foreign visitors.
She said this means Davao City would be one of the places that tourists would go once they visit the country.
The invitations would be sent to foreign media, tour operators, and tourists, particularly in Japan, South Korea, and China.
Davao City is considered as one of the premiere destinations in the country along with Boracay, Cebu, Bohol and Palawan.
Del Mundo added that the city is among the places chosen for DOT's Global Classroom for Peace program, which aims to invite over 100 teachers from the US to come over to the country and interact with local teachers and students.
She said they are particularly targeting schools where indigenous peoples attend and as well as public schools.
The foreign teachers could also teach in the chosen schools.
The DOT is targeting to invite every month 10 teachers who would stay for nine days.
"The more interesting part about it is the documentation of the American educators visit, which would be shown in the top-rated show of Oprah Winfrey in September," del Mundo said.
On April 9 and 10, an advance team arrived to conduct an inspection and then the crew will follow for the documentation, del Mundo added.
Del Mundo, along with other local business leaders, organized the recently concluded 1st Tourism Jobs Fair at NCCC Mall.

Davao cuisine offered for 3 weeks at Makati posh hotel
Sunstar Online (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2006/04/12/bus/davao.cuisine.offered.for.3.weeks.at.makati.posh.hotel.html)
April 12 2006
IT ALL started when the distinct Davao dishes were presented and offered for three straight weeks at Hotel Intercontinental in Makati.
Most diners just loved the food and even asked where they could get them and where it is usually served.
From then on, Davao got a certain pride in the field of culinary art as it affirmed how people just love Davao's distinct cuisine.
Chef Padi Lascano of Unilever Foods Solution explained how unique Davao's cuisine as compared to the almost similar Asian dishes.
"If you observe, we may have similar ingredients but we've got a different mix. We do not saute, we simply boil, broil, grill, and bake," he said.
This, according to him, makes Davao's dishes more different from the other cuisines and even more appreciated by most diners.
He explained how these cuisines evolved and finally found its own place in the heart and stomach of eaters.
"Our dishes got so many influences from the various colonizers like Japanese, Spanish, and Americans. Filipinos who migrated from Luzon to Davao were also part of those who deeply influenced the evolution of Davao cuisine," he said.
Marrisa Te-eng Fo of the Dive The Gulf Festival 2006 and also one of the organizers of the "Island Cuisine" competition urged Dabawenyos to bring up to 99 percent level the use of natural products abound in the region.
The said competition is open to all resorts in Mindanao, most especially to members of Bar and Restaurant Association of Davao.
Participants must bring in their finished product, plated the way they want to be judged on April 28, 5 p.m. at the Waterfront Insular Hotel.

Traffic Management Center (TMC) chief Celso Gempesaw said Davao City bagged the traffic orderliness ranking on February 9, based on a survey conducted by a group of ASEAN tourism-related companies.
The survey is held every three years. The orderliness in roads and travel of per vehicle per kilometre were among the criteria considered in the study.
Gempesaw said in the 2003 ASEAN survey, Davao City ranked number 27.
He said the city managed to bag the ranking despite limited budget eventually causing personnel lack problem.
For the last three years, the TMC is composed only of 360 personnel, 50 per cent of them are deployed in the city's streets on a shifting schedule.
Since then, TMC is maximizing the inadequate number of traffic enforcers in a bid to maintain order in the streets, Gempesaw said at a forum held here on Wednesday.
He said about 45,000 vehicles are plying the city streets, 20 per cent of which are public utility vehicles, and 80 per cent are private.
Considering this huge number of vehicles and the average 10 traffic violations per day, 50 per cent of the 360 TMC personnel is truly not enough to maintain a perfect traffic order, he added.
Amidst the lack of personnel, TMC focuses on its main goal to direct and control traffic, making the arrest of traffic violators as second priority.
However, Gempesaw said, the existence of various access roads in the city helped accommodate tens of thousands of vehicles, easing traffic.

16 New Routes Proposed to Decongest Davao Traffic
Yahoo Asia News (http://asia.news.yahoo.com/060412/4/2iy29.html)
April 12, 2006
DAVAO CITY, April 12 Asia Pulse - The city government will establish 16 alternative routes to ease the traffic flow in the city as the number of private and public vehicles doubles annually.
"We need to open new routes to accommodate all our vehicles and ensure smooth traffic flow considering also that our population grows tremendously every year," Traffic Management Center (TMC) Chief Celso Gempesaw said.
There are at least 45,000 vehicles roaming the streets of the city, of which 12,000 are public utility jeepneys using the major thoroughfares daily.
He said in 1998, Davao's population was recorded only at 500,000. It grew to 800,000 in 2001 and rose to 1.4 million in 2004.
Gempesaw said the move will help maintain the city's status as having a good traffic management, being cited as number five in Asia for traffic flow.
He said a private company in the ASEAN made the survey, which was released on February 9 this year.
"This is an achievement for Davao since we were ranked number 27 three years ago," he said.

Sus! Totoo gyud masyado 'yan. Ganyan talaga kami mag-talk sa Davao. Although the farther north or south you go away from the poblacion, the more Cebuano it gets. As in, hindi ko na gyud ma-understand lagi. Tapos, yung mga transplanted Manilenos na nandito naka-assign sa work nila, after a while, ma-pick up nila ang Davao-talk. BTW, we also have a curious word that can be used as a verb, adjective or noun. That word is "HILAS". I-reserve ko ang varied definition and use of that word in a future post. O, lagi! :)

Palau, Davao business tie-up mulled
Source: Sunstar Davao
THE Mindanao Business Council and GEM 2 Program conducted a business meeting on agri-trade and tourism with Palau delegates and participants at the Marco Polo Hotel, during the visit of some dignitaries from Palau to Davao City last April 8, the Mindanao Business Council said.
Congratulations to the graduates of 2006! Post your graduation experiences and greetings here.
Most of the discussion on tourism revolved on mutual marketing of goods and tourism promotion between Palau and the Philippines, it said.
Senator Alfonso Diaz of Palau emphasized their willingness to market in Palau the tourism of the Philippines, especially Davao.
It was also agreed that the two countries should work on exchanging schedule of tourism-related events and work on it for possible tie-ups.
Also raised during the meeting was the possibility of shipping products directly to Palau since the two countries are now more accessible to each other.
MinBC said Diaz revealed during the meeting that mango fruits from the Philippines are very popular in Palau, even as he suggested the shipment of the products directly to Palau to maintain their quality.
Small discussions with participants of the same line of business were also held after the meeting to further discuss details of their businesses and tourism tie-ups, it said.
Senator Alfonso Diaz, Palau Resource and Development Tourism chairman, and Otoichi Besebes, minister of Trade and Commerce, headed the Palau delegation.
The key tourism players of the private sector in Davao City who attended the meeting were Susan Palad of Kahsan Tours, Mary Anne Montemayor of Villa Margarita, Linie Palacio and Felipe Pabelic Jr. of Waterfront Insular Hotel, Wanda Teo of Mt. Apo Travel and Tours, and Jennifer Melocoton of Amstar Travel and Tours.
Hopefully, the meeting will serve as a gateway to a bilateral trade and tourism relationship between the two countries. (CO)

bustero April 15th, 2006, 04:10 AM I post this for the benefit of all as a point of discussion as to how Davao should grow. Looking at the demographics of the Philippines , it'll probably hit 5 mil in population in 35 years or within our lifetime (well for some of us quite an optimistic age but hey science and medicine is moving on). I honestly hope that Davao will not sprawl and eat into more farmlands, open spaces, etc. The LA type of urban connubration is extremely extremely wastefull and produces so much pollution due to the over reliance of cars and individual transportation to get anything done. HK is an extremely good model of how they've managed to balance a big population and a maintaining lots of green space (what most people don't realize is that HK has a higher percentage of flat green open space to built up urban area, even within HK island which most people beleive is the densest place on earth) But good urban planning balances this well so that we don't have to have a 1 hour commute from Cabantian to NCCC! Food for thought but important for the future.
(btw credit belongs to HK skyline who posted this in the transportation thread)
HK hailed for showing that cars are not the way forward
8 April 2006
South China Morning Post
Hong Kong could be a role model for China in terms of sustainable mass public transport, an expert in the field said yesterday while suggesting the mainland public was becoming too dependent on the use of cars rather than railways.
Peter ******, professor of city policy and director of the Institute for Sustainability and Technology Policy at Murdoch University in Australia, said extensive construction of roads and an over-reliance on cars were outdated modes of development.
He described the problem of dependence on cars as being as obvious as "an elephant in the room" and said it was the biggest problem of 21st-century cities.
He was speaking at a plenary session of the 12th International Sustainable Development Research Conference organised by the Centre of Urban Planning and Environmental Management, University of Hong Kong.
The South China Morning Post is a media partner of the event, which was attended by about 300 academics and researchers worldwide on a diversified theme of sustainable development.
"If you look at the Chinese cities now, there is lots of {hellip} development but no more bicycles in the street. Cars seem to be the future of China. In this regard, the Hong Kong model is important," he said.
It was estimated that if China's car ownership rate reached the same level of the United States, the additional number of cars would amount to 800 million, which would have serious implications for depleting oil reserves.
"Hong Kong will survive any oil crisis as it is structured to be able to," said Professor ******, who helped to draft a sustainable development strategy for Western Australia.
He added that Hong Kong had the edge in sustainable transport which was used by about 82 per cent of the population, compared with just 15 per cent in Perth. The passenger car usage rate was also much lower than other places.
It was estimated that the average kilometres per person travelled by car was just 930km a year, versus 13,500km in Perth.
He said generally roads were far less effective in terms of carrying capacity, saying that one rail could replace up to 12 lanes of freeway in Australia.
"It's all about space, and space is money in the city," he said.
The three-day sustainable conference will end today.

Please show us the way.
Incidentally, I am convening a multi-sectoral meeting on April 24 at 2 pm at the 3rd floor SP bldg. to revive our campaign for an "open skies" policy for Davao City.
An "open skies" regime would lure more foreign airlines to service our city, thereby bringing in more tourists and spurring trade and investments.
Anyone interested, please join us. :)

Me and my relatives also went to the Marilog area last Thursday. Sobrang lamig.
mydavaocity April 15th, 2006, 12:09 PM Random stuff:
I might be able to join you guys at Karl's this Monday but I'm not yet 100% sure.
re: whales and dolphins... I hope this could be another focal point of Davao's budding eco-tourism industry. Donsol, which is not yet a very progressive/developed town, is getting a lot og attention because of their whale sharks encounters thing.
re: LRT/MRT I just came from Manila and I experienced how convinient the MRT/LRT system is. Sana meron din dito sa Davao. It would really help the farmers/bussinessmen/residents living in the second and third districts.
re: I joined a walking tour of the Binondo area. And sobrang nainggit ako, kasi walang ganoong tour/area dito sa Davao. Maybe the city government or civil society groups can sponsor the restoration of the "older" areas of downtown Davao. Old houses owned by old Davao families can be turned into mini-museums containing antiques, books and other arts and culture stuff owned by the family.
I also think that the Davao City Library in SP is a tad too small.
re: Inviting over local ecology/tourism tv shows - I don't have any connections to those shows. Pero maybe we could write a letter or something to them. And local businesses/hotels can maybe sponsor their trip here.
mydavaocity April 15th, 2006, 12:11 PM Also... the Marilog area can also be fully developed as another site for eco-tourism. Maybe the lgu can sponsor a workshop/seminar for the people living in the area so they could be tour guides, or maybe open up small bed and breakfast lodges for tourists. The only mountain resort there open to the general public is Seagull. It was full last Thursday when I was in the area.
However, proper precautions should be done so that it will not turn into an overly populated and commercialized area like Baguio.

Hello, mydavao!
There is one fundamental problem with regards Marilog. The land is still in public domain; our lumad brothers and sisters are claiming it as their ancestral domain. I believe we should respect their rights to these lands. Now, if they agree that these be developed into tourist areas, well and good. Definitely better than Baguio. Your right, we should plan that it would not follow the problems of other mountain resorts. :)
mydavaocity April 15th, 2006, 12:29 PM Another thing I did in Manila (well, Makati) was visit the Salcedo Market last Saturday. And my cousin and I think it might be a good idea to have one here in Davao City. It's like a mini-fresh market held every Saturday in the heart of Makati. Most of the sellers are organic farmers, small restos and housewives. They sell fresh fruits and vegetables, plants, seafoods, deli products (sausages, ham, etc). Food stalls also sell barbeque, lechon, lechon baka, french cuisine, pasta, sandwiches, fruit chakes, etc. Tita Cely's also had a stall there.
mydavaocity April 15th, 2006, 12:35 PM re: Marilog District
I think the development plan of the district should fully include the welfare of our lumad brothers and sisters. What I was suggesting (but might not have been clear) was to help them out start small/micro eco-tourism businesses/venture. Eg our lumad brothers can be taught English so they can work as tour guides/hosts to foreigners who are visiting. I do not think it would be right to uproot them.
Maybe the development can also include the development of their agricultural/farming practices. Last Thursday alone, my cousins and I saw at least four "forest fires" which were probably caused by the slash and burn (kaingin) farming method.

....among others, the old Mental Hospital bldg., the San Pedro Barracks, those houses along/near the crooked road, .....in addition: make San Pedro St. an "India-town" (like those in LA and Chicago)!!!!
bustero April 15th, 2006, 12:41 PM My grandpa's house house on Sta Ana has been torn down already, you can see it on a lot of old pix. too bad, I used to think the most interesting architecture were the Japanese houses in Toril , of course there's not a lot of them left.

ria, i like your idea. an eco-tourism site with cultural encounter with lumads... parang cultural village. these lumads can be taught how to protect and maintain the site. sila na mismo ang dapat mangangalaga ng 'ancestral domain' nila. at the same time, women be taught how to weave ethnic textiles and make handicrafts.
pero, ambot murag nahurot na man og pamaligya nila ang 'rights'. ang uban gani ibaligya maski human ng nabaligya.

How about San Pedro St. a "Japan kuo" , my father once told me that before World War II San Pedro St. was owned mostly by Japanese businesses.

well probably we can divide San Pedro St. into "Japan Kuo" and "India- Town".....How I wish to see "Eat All You Can" Indian Restaurants there during the day time and "Geisha-Clubs" at night....:cucumber:

mydavaocity April 15th, 2006, 08:49 PM LOL! geisha clubs... wag naman sana...
mydavaocity April 15th, 2006, 08:50 PM good idea nga to preserve/restore a part of downtown davao as a sort of "tribute" (can't think of anohter word) to the japanese people who also lived in this part of the country. although if I remember my history lessons correctly, they were really spies.
mydavaocity April 15th, 2006, 09:11 PM To the people who are going to the thing on monday... ano bang gagawin natin??? Meet each other?

Yeah and there's a lot of tunnels underneath the buildings along San Pedro. Davao Kuo or Japan Town is apt for half the area and another half be dedicated to our Indian brothers. I love their (Indian's) all-you-can eat specials too...hot and yummy!

Exec vows to promote Davao tourism potentials in Palau
Source: Sunstar: Monday, April 17, 2006
SENATOR Alfonso Diaz of the Republic of Palau has vowed to promote tourism potentials of Davao Region during a meeting with local business leaders and tourism stakeholders in Davao City on April 8.
In the same meeting, it was also agreed that the two countries should work on exchanging schedule of tourism-related events and on possible tie-ups.
Congratulations to the graduates of 2006! Post your graduation experiences and greetings here.
The Mindanao Business Council and GEM 2 Program conducted a business meeting on agri-trade and tourism sector with dignitaries from Palau and participants from Davao at the Marco Polo Hotel.
Most of the discussion on tourism revolved on mutual marketing of goods and tourism promotions between Palau and the Philippines.
Likewise raised during the meeting was the possibility of shipping products directly to Palau since the two countries are now more accessible to each other.
Diaz said mango fruits from the Philippines are very popular in Palau and that it would be better if these would be shipped directly to Palau to maintain its quality.
Small discussions among the participants of the same line of business were also held after the meeting to further discuss details of their businesses and tourism tie-ups.
Diaz, who is chair of Resource and Development Tourism of Palau, and Otoichi Besebes, Minister of Trade and Commerce headed the Palau delegation.
The key tourism players of the private sector in Davao City who attended the meeting were Susan Palad of Kahsan Tours, Mary Anne Montemayor of Villa Margarita, Linie Palacio and Felipe Pabelic, Jr. of Waterfront Insular Hotel, Wanda Teo of Mt. Apo Travel and Tours, and Jennifer Melocoton of Amstar Travel and Tours.
The meeting, officials said, served as a gateway towards a bilateral trade and tourism relationship between the two countries.
Davao Among Most Competitive Cities
Source: Davaotoday: April 15, 2006
DAVAO CITY – The selection of Davao City as among the Philippines’s most competitive cities for 2005 is a good sign that it is a conducive place for investment, the Department of Trade and Industry has said.
A study conducted by the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) identified the metropolitan cities of Davao, Las Piñas, Makati, Marikina, and Muntinlupa as ideal places for living and doing business.
The AIM, in a statement, said that the study was designed to promote healthy competition among Philippine cities to further motivate local government leaders become economic and development managers apart from being providers of public goods and services.
Federico Macaranas of the AIM Policy Center said the ranking is also aimed at recognizing the outstanding performance of cities, assess their weaknesses and strengths, and encourage decentralization.
Aside from Davao City, Tagum City likewise was recognized as among the most competitive smaller cities in the country.
DTI regional director Merly M. Cruz said that this achievement of the cities of Davao and Tagum would be an advantage in persuading more investors to infuse their capitals here.
“Such citation received by the two cities in the Davao region is one opportunity for us to market the region better. Moreover, once a businessman sees the list of most competitive cities in the country, it would make him more interested and more confident to invest in the areas cited in the said list,” she said.
Cruz is optimistic that both the cities of Davao and Tagum would continue reaping success, considering the presence of vital infrastructures and stable peace and order situation in the said areas. (Philippine Information Agency)

Davao City wins 5th best in ASEAN traffic
DAVAO CITY (PNA) - An Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) group of companies identified Davao City as fifth among the cities in Asia with smooth traffic flow. Traffic Management Center (TMC) chief Celso Gempesaw said Davao City bagged the traffic orderliness title last February 9, based on a survey conducted by a group of ASEAN tourism-related companies. The survey is being held every three years. The orderliness in the roads and travel of per vehicle per kilometer were among the criteria which were considered in the study. Gempesaw said in the 2003 ASEAN survey, Davao City ranked No. 27. He said the city managed to bag the title despite limited budget eventually causing personnel lack problem. For the last three years, the TMC is composed only of 360 personnel, 50 percent of them are deployed in the city’s streets on a shifting schedule. Since then, TMC is maximizing the inadequate number of traffic enforcers in a bid to maintain order in the streets, Gempesaw said at a forum held here on Wednesday. He said about 45,000 vehicles are plying the city streets, 20 percent of which are public utility vehicles, and 80 percent are private.
Davao as country’s top tourism draw pushed
DAVAO CITY (PNA) – The Department of Tourism (DoT) has strengthened the promotion of the city as one of the top destinations in the country this year. Susan del Mundo, Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation (PCVC) head, said there is already an order from Tourism Secretary Ace Durano to include Davao City as a major focus in the Philippine tourism promotion. Del Mundo said as a starting point, Durano has ordered the country’s foreign attache to include the city in the invitation of program for foreign visitors.

A glimpse of Davao
Davao is a province capable of arousing interest or curiosity. The cultural diversity and traditions; the mountainous region marked with rolling hills and fertile valleys. The alluring waling-waling orchid, the intriguing endangered Philippine Eagle. The harmonious relationship between its neighboring provinces influenced by ethnic and cultural ties have made Davao the window to the island of Mindanao.
In the early stage ethnic tribes lived together harmoniously, in peace and friendship like the Bagobos, Mandayas, Manobos, Mansakas and Tiboli. It is known that they are the ones that gave the province a name from the word daba-daba, now Davao. It is because of its abundance of natural resources Davao has also attracted neighboring provinces and settlers. Despite its differences in culture and tradition people have live together in peace and harmony.
Davao is a melting pot for all culture; its invigorating surroundings, the piece of history, the diversity of culture and tradition, the gathering and festivities like the Kadayawan Festival makes Davao City inviting and exciting to visit. Just ask the Dabawenyos.
Have fun and enjoy!

KulasKusgan April 17th, 2006, 07:01 PM Wow! Daba-Daba. Go Daba-Daba!
I know whats next... DAVOH, DUHWOW, DATU DABAO
The origin of the name Dabaw
By Mac D. Tiu, Ph.D.
There are three theories as to how Dabaw or Davao got its name. The first theory says that Dabaw came from the word "daba-daba," meaning fire, referring to Mt. Apo as a "land of fire."
The second theory says that the word is a native toponym meaning "beyond the high grounds," that is, that the settlement at the mouth of Davao River is "beyond the high grounds." (Ernesto I. Corcino, Davao History, Philippine Centennial Movement, Davao City Chapter, Davao City, 1998. Page 8 provides a thorough argument for this theory).
The third theory says it came from Datu Dabao, the Manobo leader of an uprising in Bunawan, Agusan in the 1650s!
The first theory, that Dabaw comes from the word "daba-daba," is rejected by all local historians. "Daba-daba" supposedly means land of fire in reference to Mt. Apo. This version says Mt. Apo got this moniker because it regularly spews fire. However, the natives say they do not have such a word as "daba-daba," besides, their word for fire is apoy.
Apparently, daba-daba is the fanciful concoction of Cebuano-Bisayan migrants to explain the origin of Davao. In an attempt to make Davao familiar to them, the migrants might have started their own place name legend, using things familiar to them. There are two Cebuano words that come close to the sound Dabao. One is dabdab, meaning to set on fire, and the other, dabahan, a kind of pot used for cooking. How any of these words became daba-daba, and how daba-daba was finally transformed into Davao is something the legend-makers failed to complete. At any rate, at one time, daba-daba became so fashionable that a radio drama used it as a title, and a civic organization has also adopted it as its name. Daba-daba has survived despite its dubious origin.
The second theory, that Davao is a phonetic blending of three Bagobo words to mean "beyond the high grounds" or "over the hills yonder," is currently the favorite theory of local historians. According to this theory, the Bagobos, the original inhabitants of Davao, use it to refer to Davao River, which is pronounced differently by the three Bagobo subgroups.
The Obos, considered the earliest tribe to settle in the area, call the river Davoh; the Clatas or Guiangans call it Duhwow, and the Tagabawa Bagobos call it Dabu. According to some research, davoh means " beyond the high grounds," or "over the hills yonder." In the past, a trading settlement was located at the mouth of the river, and when interior tribes went to the place, they would say they were going to "davoh" or "duhwow," as the settlement was surrounded by the rolling hills of Buhangin, Magtuod, Maa, and Matina.
In effect, according to this theory, Davao is a toponym referring to the river beyond the high grounds. The river then is the point of reference, and the settlement took the name as its own.
The third theory meanwhile states that Dabaw got its name from Datu Dabao, a Manobo chieftain who led an uprising in Linao, Bunawan, Agusan in the 1650s. Mr. Bert Tesorero, a columnist in a local paper, made such an assertion in an article he wrote about a year ago or so. However, he did not present any evidence to support his contention.
Even then, this theory presents the simplest, and therefore, the most logical explanation for the name Davao. I, for one, favor this theory - that Davao River was named after Datu Dabao. It makes sense, and I am now doing research to follow up some hunches to prove it.
Theory number two and theory number three converge on the fact that the natives call the river in the poblacion Davao River. But they diverge on the question of why.
Proponents of theory number two state that the natives call the river Dabao (or its variants) based on the etymology of the word Davao, which is traced back to its toponymic origin Duhwow or Davoh. On this point, the theory is on solid ground since places are often named according to certain landmarks or peculiar features of a place. The only way to debunk this is to disprove that the word davoh, duhwow or dabu means "beyond the high grounds."
On the other hand, theory number three advances another method of naming a place - by naming it after a famous or important person - most likely an ancestor, a hero, or a deity. Thus, Datu Dabao is a logical explanation for Davao River. But this theory has to solve many problems. Among them - how did the Davao natives come to know of Datu Dabao? Why should they name the river after him?
I advance these theses:
1. Datu Dabao or his descendants or followers came to Davao and colonized it after leaving Linao, Agusan sometime in the 1650s. This explains Davao River, so far away from Linao.
2. The descendants/followers of Datu Dabao are the Bagobos, specifically the so-called subgroup Tagabawas. (Precisely they are called Bagobos because they are Bago Obo - or new people.)
3. Therefore the Bagobos and Agusanon Manobos (especially centered in Linao, Bunawan) are closely related linguistically and share common myths and legends.
I have done a preliminary scanning of documents, oral history and place names and I have come across very encouraging clues. This line of investigation is certainly worth pursuing.

davaoeagle April 17th, 2006, 09:18 PM Hey guys, culled this from Manila Bulletin yesterday. Enjoy reading.
PeopleSupport mines talents from Southern Philippines
Nope. There are no celebrities nor a big time politician and his entourage on this particular domestic flight from Davao.
Who then are being welcomed at the Manila domestic airport?Newly-hired applicants!
They are the new employees at PeopleSupport. We even have a welcoming committee that greets our recruits from the provinces, I paraphrase PeopleSupport Philippines President Bong Borja conversation with a group of trade and industry and IT reporters recently.
Earlier this month, PeopleSupport opened a recruitment center in Davao City. This facility will support the company’s initiative of tapping the southern Philippine workforce for its sites in Manila and Cebu, he said.
Borja takes pride in the company’s incentive program which include competitive night differential pay, acquiring a travel agency to cater to employees desiring to spend a weekend vacation in Hong Kong for example, first-class gym equipment and facilities, transportation allowances, and many more."With the need to grow our employee base to support our clients’ businesses, we make sure that we continuously address our employees’ concerns, and provide above-industry benefits.
We initiated PeopleSupport Travel, including IATA accreditation, giving our travel support eReps IATA cards and the rest of our employees the benefit of discounted travel," he reported.Travel advisories from foreign embassies, e.g. US Embassy, prevent PeopleSupport building an operations center in Mindanao. At the least, he said "we have a foot on the door. We already have a training center there.
"He stated, "From our first Davao recruitment fair in 2004, we have regularly come back to Davao and have since hired close to 500 Customer Service Representatives (a.k.a. eReps). A lot of them have already been promoted to supervisory or leadership positions. We are very impressed with the skills of the young professionals there, and we would like to further open our doors to them. Opening this center is a testimonial of our belief in the Davao workforce.
"Simulataneously, buildouts are in place at the 4th floor of the PeopleSupport Center in Ayala, Makati; including a second site in Cebu. The target is to have all facilities operational by the second quarter of 2006.He commented, "We are particularly excited about 2006, as PeopleSupport recently added two new growth engines in our service offering. First, in January 2006, we expanded our business process outsourcing offering to include transcription and captioning services, through our acquisition of Rapidtext. Second, early this month, we launched our operation in Costa Rica, to diversify our geographic operations, and to greatly expand our Spanish and bilingual services.
"He disclosed that "between now and the end of the second quarter, we need to fill up close to 2,000 seats combined in our sites in Manila, Cebu and Costa Rica."A majority of PeopleSupport’s services are performed in the Philippines by over 5,000 college-educated, English speaking Filipinos. It is headquartered in Los Angeles, California.
davaoeagle April 17th, 2006, 09:33 PM Confirmed, konsejal Bing Reta died of cardiac arrest 2 or 3 years ago- a big loss for Davao as he was a resilient, real sports man championing the cause of the lowly local boxing trainees at the Davao stable.
tj_brewed April 18th, 2006, 12:03 AM :righton: Whoa! Thread 8 na? that was pretty fasT! :righton: Kudos to All!!!! and Kudos to the ever alluring Davao :bowtie:
I was pretty busy that past few weeks with the lenten season, summer outings, etc. etc. That's why i really do apologize if i was not able to attend the forum that often. And gee....i really do miss ya all! all of ya (Cebu and Davao thread forumers) are like family to me...
@Davaoeagle - re the website, I've noticed that someone had registered the planned url which is exploredavao. That's is why, I'll be announcing the new url after i have registered its domain. but no fret, it's pretty catchy and does have a great retention.
@konsehal - i've read your blog konsehal....and darn it! sayang yung Daratex. The property was sold in just a small amount....i'm sure our LGU is currently doing its part to investigate such matter.....by the way, is there still a chance that the LGU can have the property back? let's say...if we'll turn over the amount paid? what's the new property owner planning to put up on that location? :?
by the way konsehal, any updates regarding the IT Zones / Parks in Davao? It was posted before in one of our threads that one of our councilors had been negotiating with the NCCCs re the "establishment of an IT zone or something?" - i aint sure if i got that right....
@sleepwalkeruno / dave - regarding the PeopleSupport Office? I've asked my friends from the HR Recruitment Team. The permanent office...the one which you have posted (as they said) will open within the year (but they are just depending on when the facility will be finished). However, for now we do have a temporary recruitment office located at A-301 Plaza de Luisa, Ramon Magsaysay Avenue.
PeopleSupport has just expanded in Costa Rica. And will open its 2nd facility in Cebu within the month. With the Training and Recruitment Center in Mindanao (which is only in DAVAO), let's keep our fingers crossed - for another PeopleSupport Contact Center facility to be based in Davao.
@dextertexter - ei bro! musta? how was ur samal island escapade? yeah bantayan island is nice! but im pretty sure that our very own samal can also compete! kulang lang tayo sa marketing! ehehehhehehehehe the sand and all (excluding the ala boracay beach parties and nightlife) in bantayan is just the same with samal's.
@ to all!!!!!!!!! welcome to the new thread......Daba Daba is indeed pretty catchy!
and oh...before i'll sign off.....regarding the website...gimme a month to design and develop it. :soon:
davaoeagle April 18th, 2006, 12:11 AM welcome back tj. I PMed you re:website. Just give me a holler when you're yet settled from your heady bantayan escapades.
Yeah, i agree, daba-daba is very catchy and unique-so symbolic to Davao as well.

Yun nga pala we discuss kung ang mga SCC Davao can make a "group" in lend some helping hands on some environmental projects like the planting of plants and trees in the upcoming Davao Nature Park , spare time lang naman wa mani pugsanay !hehehe! thats why iwas so eager to meet councilor Happy LA ka gabi!
Unsa man agree mo ang dili mo agree pusilon sa Luneta park ai Magsaysay park diay dri! :jk: : hehehe !

psionic April 18th, 2006, 11:03 AM how about the expansion of sm city davao?

LordCarnal April 18th, 2006, 12:55 PM ^^
bai makasuya da kay naa moy member nga konsehal.. Was he present during your meet?
LordCarnal April 18th, 2006, 01:00 PM By the way, naa pa ba ang GAP?
I used to go there when we visited Davao. One of its attractions was that Japanese Tunnel where a "Yamashita Treasure" was allegedly found./
KulasKusgan April 18th, 2006, 01:01 PM ^^ we are lucky to have 2 city councilors in our thread. one of them supposed to be with us last night but mejo nabusy kay monday man.
psionic April 18th, 2006, 01:05 PM may plano ba na mag expand o mag lagay ng annex building and sm? bakit wala pa ang robinsons at ayala dito sa dvao? nalalamangan na ata tayo ng ibang cities in terms of the number of mall especially cagayan de oro. i dont want to see CDO overtake DVO.
simply_me April 18th, 2006, 01:19 PM ^^would be nice to see other cities progressing too, may it be in highrises, malls or whatever dev't. i don't see the rush for Davao to have such malls (robinson's and ayala). we have our very own NCCC mall and the Gaisano Malls. though eventually, darating din tayo jan. so don't worry :okay:
scandinavian girl April 18th, 2006, 02:55 PM @ DAVE so nice to see you all on the pictures from your meeting

was more of using today's technology - colour printer and adding handwritten text to it to tell my family's story when my father left to work in indonesia.. the oils was another, 4 pieces of 40x40 inches and a couple of small ones. all in all it tells of the loneliness of im/migrants.

:) Thanx davoeagel. Nice to be here and I do enjoy it alot. I do not understand a word hardly of the language being spoken in here, by the Davao folks.
But Dinabaw speaks some swedish and of course english, he is always so kind and explains what is being said , do I ask him. Some I figure out myself or with the help of my students here in Sweden, some of them originaly come from the Philippines, or I try myself with the help of dicitonaries...but ha ha ha somtimes I do not think you really say what I found out with the help form the dictionaries < if then it is a ((((straaaange language)))))) so have to give my own private teacher and helper Dinabaw a big  and "tack älskling, för din hjälp"
A good Wednesday to you ALL!!!!
:goodbye:
Time to work again.
paulkrps April 18th, 2006, 09:19 PM ^^ curious about dinabaw knowing swedish hahaha. how's life as a teacher lena?

paulkrps, very interesting and also touching, all people that have been immigrants or are, know that lonliness feeling that comes and goes in a forreing stay, been there twice myself. It takes courage and motivations to change culture. I like your art and thank you for sharing this information with me . Thank you paulkrps.
