Oh no, that is not a wharf! That is a BAR! Yup! A BAR! That is one of Davao's posh bars. Very romantic in the evening. Nasa premises yan ng Waterfront Hotel. Ganda dito noh? May bar sa gitna ng dagat...
ysis October 15th, 2007, 04:56 AM ;15892633']kung gagamitin mo utak mo you would notice that isnt a wharf (thats actually a pier)
and FYI that isnt SASA wharf, thats the jetty ng Waterfront Insular hotel (ginagamit dati for the boat to pearl farm)
The source speaks more louder than words.

Sasa Wharf is quiet extraordinary. But I have never seen modern cranes, and only one vessel docked based on the picture.
http://www.pbase.com/cmanaginged/image/39536066
The wharf you referred to as directly seen in the picture is the Alcantara Plywood Factory private seaport not the sasa wharf.
WawaY[625] October 15th, 2007, 04:57 AM ^^ di rin, like i said, jetty yan ng waterfront hotel (kita mo yan structure na may "pirata" na sign? thats Pirata Bar :)
The source speaks more louder than words.
Here:http://www.pbase.com/cmanaginged/pearl_farm_davao
and only a simple minded person would believe such a stupid source
anyway, you can post all misinformation you want, outsiders know what davao is about anyway (which is the premiere city in mindanao)
FYI, you dont say "more louder" redundant na na hijo (i suggest you brush up on your english)

But I think it is an old picture of Pirata Bar. Maganda na ang Pirata ngayon eh... Sabagay, you cannot appreciate the structure unless you see it in the evening. Haay very romantic. And no, hindi kailangan ng crane sa Pirata Bar. Ang cranes ay nasa wharf, hindi sa Bar.

Ok. It's a nice bar along the coast. Wala naman masama kung may source, dba?
Anyway, it's a bar as what you said.

How can your source speak louder than words when your source does not even know the right words to say? Anyway, if you have not experienced Pirata Bar, then I suggest you come over. Maganda doon. Hindi ka magsisisi. But I hope medyo malaki yung budget mo. As I said, isa yan sa mga posh bars dito sa barrio namin.

I can see hi-rise buildings in this site in the future. Hope it won't take up for another decade or more than to see a hi-rise edifice.^^

medyo nahilo ako sa english mo :)
pero sige assuming what you meant was "sana di umabot ng isang dekada o higit pa bago magka high rise", then, sadly, that could be the case considering davao doesnt have much demand for high rise buildings. The way i see the development trends, the demand for high rise here are from the hotel sector..
if may high rise office man, i dont think that park (for now) is the ideal location so medyo matatagalan pa yan, and high rise residential buildings may not be a fad sa davao dahil nga maraming high end subdivision (as i see it, a high rise residential condo in davao would only make sense in limited locations ie. SM area, downtown and Bajada)
Thus hi-rise buildings which are already 8 years and more than ten years old?^^

ano daw yun?!?! hijo, before you subject yourself to more embarrassment, i suggest you post in you native dialect muna (or tagalog) and brush up on your english first..:)
ok lang naman yung konting grammatical errors (ako man mayroon din nyan) pero wag naman yung mahihilo ang mambabasa kung ano ang punto mo ;)

Yeah..a marina with a yacht club is perfect for the location...any place surrounded by big bodies of water such as Davao should build more marinas with yacht clubs...well it's good Davao is slowly picking up the pace...
Why do you think this kind of dev't would get the ire of the city exec?

tj_brewed October 15th, 2007, 12:15 PM I can see hi-rise buildings in this site in the future. Hope it won't take up for another decade or more than to see a hi-rise edifice.^^
Based on the development timeline of other business districts in the country such as Makati, Ortigas, and Cebu - actually it would take atleast a decade or 10 years for that matter.
Take for example, my second home city - Cebu. Cebu Business Park's land development work was completed on 1992. Buildings came after a couple of years.
The Riverfront Corporate City was just officially launched sometime 2003 - 2004. Now, is 2007..hmmm that's less than 5 years and the park already got a complete tourism belt, a college building, and the commercial complex. :okay:
And based on the development timeline of most Sta Lucia projects, most of them took a decade to fully develop it...But the thing with Sta Lucia is when they started it, they would finish it. Here are some of their projects that took them awhile to develop...slowly but surely:
- Rizal Technopark 2000
- Victorias Place in Ortigas
- Rio de Oro in Cavite
- The Orchard in Cavite
- Palm Coast Marina in Asiaworld city

1,800 patients served in Benedenti free dental clinics
by Romy Sabaldan
Davao City (16 October) -- A TOTAL of 1,800 patients have already been treated in such services as consultations, diagnoses, teeth cleaning, restoration, dentures and at the worst scenario tooth extraction to heal the pain and recurring dental problems, all for free.
This was learned today from Dr. Erick Sembrano, chief coordinator of the Ist International Comprehensive Dental missions initiated by his Belgian counterpart Geert Verhaegen and Filipina wife Dr. Faith Nunez.
Sembrano said the efforts are a joint undertaking of Belgium's Benedenti with technical support from the Davao-based Operation Smiles. Benedenti, he said provided the financial, manpower and material support as major undertaker of the humanitarian mission.
Geert Verhaegen, for his part, told the Philippine Information Agency (PIA XI) that Benedenti is one of the most modern Belgian dental groups owned by Rik Claes whose top dentists are in Davao conducting the on-the-spot training and treatment in such specialized dental fields in modern dentistry as Implantology and Orthodontics.
The team of 12 Belgian dentists is headed by top Belgian dental practitioner Dr. An Van Kerkhoven. The team head, according to Dr. Claes is the best in his team.
They are supported mainly in the weeklong all-around free dental clinics by some 150 full-pledged Davao dentists, senior students and clinical assistants of the host dental institution, the Davao Medical School Foundation headed by Dr. Erna Hilario-Dimaya, dean of the DMSF School of Dentistry.
Sembrano has expressed apprehension of not hitting the maximum target clienteles of 3,000 patients in the brisk and fully-loaded healing and restoration project. But added that optimum quality services will be ensured even at the risk of reneging on earlier count which was projected to reach the maximum number of patients.
Dental officials in Davao observe that the Benedenti mission is the biggest and most comprehensive free dental clinic ever conducted in the Davao region where even patients are provided with new dentures for free. (PIA XI) [top]

Career Gateways jobs fair to hit Davao, Gensan
by Prix D Banzon
Davao City (16 October) -- Career Gateways 2007, the biggest jobs fair initiated by JIB e-Academy will be held in Davao City on October 17, 2007 at SM City Davao Entertainment Plaza and in General Santos City on October 19 at the KCC Convention Hall.
Joji Iligan Bian, president of JIB e-Academy in a press briefing on Monday at SM City's Café Rysus said that nine major call centers will spearhead the fair to fill in their respective manpower requirements.
Bian said among those participating are Six-Eleven Global Services, E-Telecare, Sykes, Viventis, e-PLDT Ventus, Teleperformance, Advanced Contact Solutions and Callbox.
She said these events are important especially for Davao because getting good human resources locally would encourage call centers to locate here instead of just hiring manpower and bring their recruits to either Cebu or Manila.
Bian also said that the event will not just be hiring of call center operators. It will also offer training through the "Learning Tracks" where an in-service lectures will be facilitated by resource speakers from call centers in Cebu and Manila.
She said the resource persons among others will also discuss business opportunities in the call center industry.
Learning Tracks will feature different lectures or topics to educate and enlighten the public as to the true nature of the industry as well as break the stereotyped misconception that call center agents are nothing more than glorified telephone receptionists
As a call center agent, one is exposed to services offered by the company on customer management, direct sales and marketing, training development and delivery, loan processing, eCommerce.
Bian said they are targeting 2,000 recruits in Davao City and another 1,000 in General Santos City and she projects an absorption rate of 40 percent from their recruit. (PIA) [top]

Warm days, wet nights
By Carlo P. Mallo
DAVAO City can expect a continuation of warm days and wet nights for the entire week. An inter-tropical convergent zone (ITCZ) is affecting Eastern Visayas and the entire island of Mindanao.
With the ITCZ affecting the region, more rains and thunderstorms are expected. However, coastal waters will remain to be calm most of the time.
Extended forecasts from the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pag-asa) reported that Mindanao, particularly Southern Mindanao, will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms especially in the late afternoon or evening.
Coastal water in the region will be slight to moderate and at times rough during thunderstorms.
Temperatures in the city are expected to range from a high of 32 degrees Celsius at high noon to a low of 23 degrees Celsius during early morning. Light to moderate winds will be blowing from the northeasterly part of the Southern Mindanao.
Humidity in the region will range from a high of 96 percent in the early morning and will be at a low of 58 percent in the afternoon.

ALL is set for the 15th Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (Bimp Eaga) Senior Officials Meeting next week.
The Mindanao Economic Development Council, the main organizer of the event, together with the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. and the Mindanao Business Council bared Monday the lineup of activities for the weeklong event.
Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007
The event starts with a golf tournament that will tee-off at the Apo Golf and Country Club with the various business and country delegates of the participating countries. The tee-off is slated on October 21.
Next would be the Mindanao Investment Conference from October 22 to 23 at the Marco Polo Hotel. The conference is aimed to provide business matching among the participants.
The 2nd Bimp Eaga Chief Minsters, Governors, and Heads of Local Governments Forum is slated on the 23rd and 24th of October at Koronadal City. The forum aims to provide a venue for heads of the local government in the Bimp Eaga sub region to discuss how they can enhance their roles.

CallBox to put up contact center inside NCCC Mall
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
THE National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center (Nerbac) of the regional office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Southern Mindanao reported that another Manila-based call center company is presently negotiating with one of the malls in Davao City for possible operation soon.
Teolulo Pasawa, Nerbac-DTI director, said in an interview the company would be offering more than 500 seats for qualified individuals with skills to be a call center agent.
Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007
"I learned that the CallBox call center company is discussing with the NCCC Mall for possible location inside the mall," Pasawa said.
He said if talks between the call center company and NCCC Mall will materialize, the call center's operation will start before the year ends.
Meanwhile, Pasawa said that Sutherland, a foreign-based call center company, is asking support from the City Government of Davao.
"They are still assessing all the factors before they will put up a company here. They are asking the City Government for some support, they need areas where they can hold their trainings," Pasawa said.
He said Sutherland still wants to hold trainings in Davao City aside from the two training programs they offered a few months back. The training programs were earlier conducted in cooperation with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda).

Ledesma: Forget Malacanang, let's build that bridge!
By Jun Ledesma
Sunbursts
LET'S come to the aid of our Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. Let's redeem his and our dignity and whatever pride is left in us for having gone down to our knees to beg from PGMA and her DPWH secretary the fund that is needed to rebuild the collapsed bridge in bankerohan.
Dabawenyos, rich and poor, are not lacking in "bayanihan" spirit. This is the time to show our support for our mayor and to prove to all and sundry that even as we are totally abandoned by the national leadership the Dabawenyo spirit in us never wanes and can overcome whatever slings of outrageous fortune befell us.
Translation: an insulting Malacanang snub and snobbery.
We have to build that bridge ourselves. I don't know how much would it cost. I have heard of several estimates whispered by government engineers--P120 million to P300 million. This wishy-washy estimate elicits suspicion of so many interested parties wanting to make money out of this proposed bridge. We are not building a Golden Gate project so I would surmise that the structural engineering plan for this one would be a lot simpler.
Can we get a design and structural engineer to come out with a plan? Gratis et amore? If the DPWH Manila engineers can do it why cannot our local boys?
We have to know how much for we have to raise the funds. The poor man's peso is as good as the rich man's million. We have to address this to our conscience. We have lived a good life of serenity and security courtesy of City Mayor Duterte. Some of you wanted to repay him some debt of gratitude. Some want to contribute a small piece to this grand monument of Dabawenyos' cohesiveness. Now is the time.
I am reminded at once of a rare experience I had in a remote village in Namhaegun, South Korea. Fresh from college I was lucky to be one of the two Pinoys who attended a forum on "Nationalism and International Understanding" in Japan which culminated in a work camp in that small village located in sparsely populated coastal area in an inland sea.
Korea in the late 1960's was not that the economic tiger that it is today. They have just recovered from the ravages of a civil war. North of the village where we (we were about 45 young foreign nationals) encamped is another sleepy village. These coastal villages looked very much like our remote sitios. "Mud" houses are mostly clustered near the slope of barren mountains. The mud houses, which do not go any higher than one storey, are so designed to protect the villagers from the excruciating heat of summer and harsh winter.
Running between the two villages is a rivulet where the farmers scoop water by the pails and sprinkle this on their rice fields. Even as they were neighbors, the inhabitants from the two villages do not communicate. And yet some of them are relatives. The river was never bridged. The gap persisted until we came.
We decided to make a bridge, about 50 meters long and about six meters wide, using rocks from the wide riverbed. We divided our group into two. One group on the northern bank and we at the south. On the first two days, we were the only ones piling rocks with our bare hands. Later we were joined in by young boys and girls from both sides.
As our work progressed the adults including the village officials joined us. Before the month ended the bridge was completed, the last stones were laid by the village heads from both sides who later embraced each other. The womenfolk cried. The celebration for the completion of the bridge and reconciliation to two estranged village folks lasted to the wee hours of the morning. We had a bonfire and we feasted on meat and fish and cultured seashells that were brought in by the village chiefs. One of them even made a pitch about Filipinos who have brave soldiers who fought during the Korean war. End of story.
I straggle into that melodrama from the past because it was about a bridge. Ours was crude and just made of stones but we proved to ourselves that united we can build a bridge that brings people across whatever the barriers are - the gap, the indifference and insensitivity.
We want to build a formidable bridge. One that could last for generations to generations. If Malacanang cannot give us one, then we have to build it ourselves. If we can, and I say we must, we should reject any funding from the national government on this one. It must be a bridge that is built from the fruits of our honest endeavors. It must be a bridge that is constructed out of every centavo that we contribute. It is one that is not tainted with corruption.
Dabawenyos have one public servant whose integrity is beyond reproach. To atone for our failure to honor him with a monument or to include his name and good deeds whenever we make reference to our history, I propose that we call this span Gov. Vicente Duterte Bridge so that each time we are asked by our children who this man is, we can be reminded and then respond and that: "Governor Duterte of undivided Davao province. We use to call him by his nickname for he is such a simple man. He is truly an honest public servant."
So how do we go about this? Let's have a fund custodian. Say, two pioneers in Davao who are now retired. These two made it good in all their enterprises with the sweat on their brows: Jesus "Chito" V. Ayala and Don Antonio Floirendo Jr. After all these two could be the first two philanthropists whose donations will prime the pump for others to follow. We will call the fund "Gov. Vicente Duterte Bridge Fund."
We need pillars to keep that bridge up. So we need about 20 more on the Board. Draw out your list and send them to me even as I draw out some of them, like: James Gaisano, Joe Tesado, Datu Ebrahim "Toto" Paglas, the Estate of the late Don Francisco Dizon, the estate of the late Guillermo Torres, Alberto M. Soriano, Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario, the estate of the late Henry "Tek Sing" Lim of NCCC, Romeo Sajulga, Antonio Teh, Lowella Gunez Amisola, Harry Lopez, Dominic Choi, George Go, Rev. Pastor Apollo Quiboloy, the Marfori Estate, Dennis Uy and Engr. Remegio Salanatin to name a few. Be counted

Sara bucks publicity for upcoming wedding
VICE Mayor Sara Z. Duterte bucked publicity anew and appealed to the media to refrain from broadcasting or printing details of the wedding, pointing out that "my other half to this marriage is a very private person."
In a press statement emailed to this paper's editor Monday, the young Duterte said: "We would deeply appreciate your support and consider it as your special gift for our special day."
She said they do not want to invite attention to the wedding adding that while she may be a public personality, her wedding "does not concern public welfare and interest."
"Hence, I would like to request the distinguished members of the mass media not to print or broadcast the details of the wedding, no matter how you came by it or who revealed the information," she write.
She assured that the media that an official photo will be released after the wedding.
She added that once married, she would continue to use her maiden name.
This is not the first time Duterte bucked fanfare.
Months before the May 14 elections, she sent Sun.Star an emailed appeal to the media to stop speculating on whether she will indeed be running for office or not as she has not yet made a decision and that making such a decision was not easy.
In that email, she rued how the speculations about her possible political plan was being run like a popularity contest and asked that she be allowed to make the decision by herself in private.

davaoeagle October 16th, 2007, 07:28 AM Davao City needs support office for MSMEs
Written by Walter I. Balane/MindaNews
Monday, 01 October 2007 10 46 56
DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/30 September) -- The local government needs an office or a bureau counterpart of the Department of Trade and Industry to focus on micro, small, and medium enterprise, the committee chair on trade and industry of the city council said.
Councilor Peter Laviña told MindaNews Sunday the function is not within the mandate of the City Business Bureau and the Davao City Investment Promotion Center.
He said there is a need for the local government to promote business particularly pro-active programs that will help MSMEs.
He said the business bureau is so tied up with regulatory work while the DCIPC has a very limited function in investment promotion.
Laviña said the city government has to attend to the need for business promotion using its own means, adding the DTI, being a national government agency, pursues its own thrusts.
"DTI is pushing national priorities that may not be the thrusts of the LGUs (local government units)," he said.
The councilor said his proposal is to merge in one unit the functions of the Business Bureau and DCIPC and other functions such as MSME development, and consumer protection.
He said he first pushed for the creation of the unit in the 14th City Council during the review of the Local Investment Code.
He said during the review he attempted to introduce reforms at the DCIPC but that the council did not act on it.
The review was archived, he said.
Laviña said he did not think the DTI had also failed to do its job since its objectives are national in scope. (Walter I. Balane/MindaNews)

When Renren Villena, the Manager of the Chimes Specialty Store, invited me to drop by Davao’s chic shopping center a few days ago, I just knew Chimes was offering something new. And I was right. Chimes recently debuted Solo, a label of a fabulous funky line of highly spirited clothes targeted for the young generation who would fit into Asian-sized wear. I didn’t bother asking for my size which would have been the XXXL tag in these outfits targeted for the malnourished ones!
Innovation that goes beyond the tunes of cool, Solo heeds today’s worldly generation’s pursuit of liberty, individualism and self-expressionism. Solo personifies its passion, discovery and aspirations.
Solo provides identity and personality more than look and style. Its appreciation for vintage and celebration of craftsmanship fuel the whim for its partisans’ need of edgy, eccentric and eclectic pieces. Some of the materials used are vintage wash and burn out fabrics, employing advanced technology in printing and treatment. In other words, the clothes are made to look like they come from your friendly, neighborhood ukay-ukay stalls minus the imported bacteria and odor that comes free of charge with the cheap second-hand clothes.
The Solo tee-shirts which really caught my interest, oh, if I could only fit right in them, are those inspired by Japanese prints in “ukiyo-e” (translated as a picture of the floating world) style. For the Japanese, the floating world was a world of leisure and the pursuit of pleasure. The distinctly Japanese “ukiyo-e” style was originally a Buddhist concept which had evolved in the 17th century to mean pure escapism and the pursuit of pleasure. It was a style for the Japanese masses. It is definitely a style for the young generation reared in Japanese Anime.
Other Solo tee-shirts of see-through material carry beautiful images of tattoo artistry which, when worn, will look like you had your body tattooed pretty much like our very own Visayas pintados of centuries ago.
Solo’s other collection ranges from gothic graphic tee to striped cardigan to wrinkled straight jeans. Fuse your wardrobe with inventive and unconventional accessories and you’re all set. It is an exciting showcase of artsy genius materialized into clothes that are fast becoming urban Manila’s hot items for this season.
Who could best represent Solo than actor/musician Dos Quizon, yes, Dolphy’s grandchild with a reputation, whose insatiable desire to learn new things and fervent enthusiasm for doing the unexpected makes him a shifting canvas at every beat. Dos Quizon embodies Solo’s raw and irrepressible vibe. His revolutionary demeanor gives him the sagacious urban flair. Adventurous, resilient and experimental, Dos continuously reinvents himself to be distinct in everything he does.
Young fashionistas with an attitude, rejoice! Solo is what you stand for.
For this collection, Dos shows off Solo’s upbeat back-to-school get up. Solo turns basic silhouette to that perfect easy, yet creatively cool rags attire. Wear clothes that let you be.

By Carmelito Q. Francisco
HEDCOR Sibulan Inc. (HSI) has announced that four Manila-based companies have expressed interest to bid for the first phase of construction of its 69 kilovolt transmission line which will connect its hydropower plant in Sibulan, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur to the Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC) system.
In a statement, HSI identified these companies as the JV Angeles Construction Corp. (JVACC), Meralco Industrial Engineering Services Corp., SL Development Construction Corp., and RD Square Construction Corp. These companies are all based in Metro Manila.
Based on the description of the project, the transmission line project will entail the construction of a 16.6 kilometer transmission system and installation of 150 structures that will connect the project to the DLPC franchise area
“The contractors will provide the manpower and equipment for the transmission line project, while HSI will provide the direct materials such as steel poles, line hardwares, wires and insulators, mostly imported,” the statement from HIS said.
Last week, the HSI, a subsidiary of the Aboitiz Power Corp., conducted a prebid conference to “clarify all the items written in the bid documents regarding the transmission line project,” said lawyer Marla Uychiat, its legal counsel as she pointed out that the sealed bids should be submitted to the company on or before November 5.
Under the project description, it should be finished in 300 days. The company said the second phase of the will be immediately bidded out after the first phase. The two phases are worth P130 million.
In March, the DLPC, also a subsidiary of the Aboitiz Power Corp., signed a memorandum of agreement with HIS for the latter to supply 400-gigawatt hour power to the former in 12 years.
Alfonso Aboitiz, president of DLPC, said his company awarded the agreement to HIS because of a lower bid on power rate.
The HSI project in entails the construction of two cascading run-of-river hydropower plants that can generate a total of 212 million kilowatt-hours annually. This energy will be needed to help counter a power crisis looming in the region.
The plants are targeted to be fully operational by August 2009.
Last month, the HSI inaugurated the 42.5 megawatt hydropower project which would tap the Sibulan and Baroring rivers in Sibulan, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur. The company will set up dams for its two cascading run-of-river plants, the project briefer said.
HSI will spend P5 billion for the hydropower plant, including the transmission system, as the company claimed that the power plant will be more environment-friendly because it “will generate carbon neutral electricity, which will eventually contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases.”
Aside from this project, the Aboitiz Power Corp. will also set up three other hydropower plants in the hinterlands of Davao City.

Great additions, cool prizes at SM 3-day sale
BE READY to take in more fun and more options in malling this weekend as SM offers yet another most anticipated "only twice-a-year" 3-day mall-wide sale.
On October 19 to 21, SM City Davao brings to Mindanao amazing savings, raffle prizes, cool entertainment and more shops to enjoy.
Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007
Shop anywhere in SM and get entitled to raffle tickets and a chance to win one of the five Next Base portable DVD players with color monitor. Check out other exciting raffle prizes from SM Department Sore and SM Supermarket too.
It's a new experience even for the already SM three-day mall-wide sale fanatics.
New additions to your service and shopping needs give this October weekend's sale a whole new look from the last one in April.
There's Healthy Options, your alternative food and health convenience shop, at the ground floor near Naturalizer.
Frostbite, also at the ground floor near Mango, has recently become a favorite hangout for ice cream and shakes; try it out this weekend.
All-time favorite Pritong Manok has a new resto with a more spacious dining area at the 2nd floor near SM Cinema 1.
Other fabulous additions to SM City's almost 24/7 service is Oroderm Megaclinic. With its laboratory opening as early as 6 a.m., convenience means taking care of your health and other shopping errands, plus fun malling in one roof.
A1 Driving is another handy feature of SM's array of service shops. Its office is at the ground floor Level 2 area just near Karl's Koffee. Also in the same area is RCC Amazing Touch, an award-winning new skin care clinic to pamper shoppers like you.
At SM City Davao, shopping always comes with fun and entertainment. Check out Natural High band's live performance on October 19. On October 20, catch Aquarela and experience real authentic Brazilian samba and bossanova in Portuguese.
It's total entertainment from the Retrospect on October 21, as it promotes its most recent album. All these cool sounds will be heard and seen at the Entertainment Plaza at 4 p.m.
Shopping hours will be stretched from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on October 19 and 21, and, far more better, extended until midnight on October 20.
davaoeagle October 17th, 2007, 03:22 AM http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/dugnac.jpg
Its called Dugnac (durian + cognac = dugnac, pronounced as “dunyak”). What a clever way of coining words!
Don’t get fooled, it may look a bit messy. That’s durian meat, in milk, cream and cognac with a cherry topping. Its a brilliant way of eating durian meat in an unusual way. Durian coffee, durian ice cream, fresh durian but durian soaked in cognac is just great! You want to know where you can get this? Check out my future photoblogs and I will reveal it.
Its great to be back online. Cheers!

Zakoya
The boyfriend is again commissioned to a 2-month assignment outside of the country. This time, I would like to think he's a secret agent. All his travels remind me of Daniel Craig in James Bond or Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible. That's it! From now on, I'll call him Tom Cruz.
http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/5089/img0495br7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
So before Tom Cruz leaves for another mission, he wanted to meet my friends, Ms. H, Atty. E, and Mr. M.
http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/3985/img0498lm9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
As you enter the dining area, the staff of Zakoya is trained to shatter your eardrums as they yell, "Irasshaimasei", and all heads turn to see the latest customer. This is typical of any Japanese restaurant, but at Zakoya, it doubles as an ear check-up.
http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/9982/img0499my4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
I arrived before everybody else did and had fun observing the staff's modus operandi. A look-out is stationed outside of Zakoya, whenever a guest is approaching, she shouts to those inside the walls, "One guest!". Then the ladies position themselves, on the left and right side, purposedly to equally damage your ears. Then the unsuspecting guest enters...IRASSHAIMASEI!
http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/4184/img0505ow7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
My last visit here was last year and a lot has changed since then. Before, I was not impressed with the very few choices. Then this time, they extended the buffet spread to another table which was like a 100% increase. Really not that extensive yet but I'm hoping for the best soon.
This reminds me of the Japanese concept Kaizen. Kaizen means "change for the better" or "continuous improvement". I am glad there was improvement in Zakoya's buffet choices. This is definetly a perfect example of Kaizen.
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/7791/img0506bl4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
IRASSHAIMASEI!!! Tom Cruz just steps in with eardrums bleeding. Then the rest of the gang arrived.
You can opt to sit in the "normal" way or the sunken like set-up. If you're planning to seriously stuff yourself, the sunken set-up is not a good idea.

Dinner and conversation was good and we ended up discussing Filipino movie insights/stories.
All sorts of stories...on how Sharon Cuneta carried her Mother on her back on Pasan ko ang Daigdig...How Lito Lapid movies would revolve around a lover being raped while washing clothes by the river and don't forget Lito Lapid's horse...on how Filipino movies can finish a 5 minute song while the lead looks out of the window...how Guy and Pip counted the stars before driving and killing themselves off a cliff...how policemen sport white towels(good morning towels?) around their heads while raiding a drug lord's ware house...how the owner-type jeep is always the vehicle of choice for the bad guys...dancing and singing along with a hundred people is the only way to end a comedy...on Fernando Poe's immortality in all his movies, except for one film, where he dies and a twin surfaces (also played by him, naturalmente!)...on how Ipe carried his father's coffin around town...OA na kung OA but I sure was entertained! That's the point, right?
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/5993/img0501qq2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
We haven't even touched Magnifico, Maximo Oliveros, Santa Santita, and the latest Filipino hits and misses! We sure did dabble on American politics but Philippine politics and entertainment was more interesting. HAHAHAHAHA!
http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/7861/img0514ul4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Regarding service, here's one that I have to share: The boyfriend accidentally dropped a P1,000 bill. He told me that he was going back to the parking lot to check if he dropped it there. Then a pretty and petite server handed me the bill. A million thanks to her. It is rare to find an honest person these days. It would have been 3-4 days worth of work but she decided to keep a clean conscience. Good girl. Sad thing is I forgot to ask her name! I know, my bad! I'll be back at Zakoya to ask her name.
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/4374/img0503dz0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The Zakoya buffet consists of the standard Japanese fare like sushi, makis, sashimi, tempura, udon, etc. Tempura, Sushis, Sashimis, Yakitori are prepared right before your eyes. There are two downsides to this: First, all the cooking affects the airconditioning and second, you end up absorbing all the odor from all the grilling and frying. My tip, don't sit near the cooking area.
http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/773/img0497kb3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
They have unlimited ice cream with strawberry, durian, and mango flavors! Yahoo!!! I just wished that the gallons were arranged nicely inside the freezer.
http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/9410/img0502oc4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
If you love Japanese food, Zakoya is a great place to hang out. The eat-all-you-can food at P333/head and unlimited iced tea will definitely keep the conversation going.

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/6185/img3909ko4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
From October 6 to 8, chefs, bakers, students, suppliers, and other food enthusiasts converged at the Convention Center at the fourth floor of the NCCC Mall of Davao City. The occasion? The much-anticipated annual Mindanao Culinary Festival (MCF). It was a celebration of Pinoy culture and indigenous materials as expressed through beautiful culinary creations.
This year’s MCF was a pleasant assault to the senses. The sight of wonderfully created table settings, floral arrangement, centerpieces, cakes, appetizers, desserts, main courses, and pastries provided a cornucopia of colors, smells, and flavors that was entertaining and very much pleasing. Competitions among HRM students, and among professionals also gave much excitement and anticipation to those in attendance.
Enjoy the photos of these masterful creations from both amateurs and professionals (I wasn’t able to tell the difference though)…

davaoeagle October 17th, 2007, 08:00 AM Swimming has a lean, mean team
Rey Bancod
Philippine hopes in swimming rest on the broad shoulders of Miguel Molina and Ryan Arabejo who banner a 14-man team bound for the 24th Southeast Asian Games in Thailand.
Molina, who won three gold medals in the last SEA Games in Manila, is entered in eight races, including three relay events while Arabejo will see action in the 400-meter and 1,500-meter freestyle events apart from the relays.
Philippine Amateur Swimming Association (PASA) President Mark Joseph said the team is nearly half the size of the squad that took part in Manila, but definitely tougher.
"I hate making predictions, but we would be happy if we could bring home five gold medals," said Joseph, also a member of the joint task force that screened the composition of the Philippine delegation.
Joseph, however, stressed that their main goal is to qualify in the Olympics next year.
"But it won’t be easy. The qualifying time almost guarantees you the gold medal in the SEA Games," he said.
Molina, 22, will be defending his titles in the 200-meter breastroke, 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley events. He’s also hoping to improve on his silver medal finish in the 200meter freestyle and is aiming for a medal finish in the 100-meter breastroke.
The United States-trained swimmer will also take part in both freestyle relays and the medley relay.
Joseph said they have high hopes that Molina would deliver and qualify for more events in the Beijing Olympics next year.
So far, Molina has earned an Olympic spot in the 200-meter individual medley following an impressive performance in the World Championships in March.
Molina has been training at the University of Southern California under Dr. David Salo, current coach of the United States Olympic squad.
"The USC attracts the fastest swimmers in the world. That’s the place to be," said Joseph.
Since finishing third behind the now retired Miguel Mendoza in the 1,500-meter freestyle two years ago, Arabejo has improved his time by nearly 30 seconds and is a cinch for the gold medal in Thailand.
His personal best of 15:39.83 has surpassed the SEA Games record and is 10 seconds faster than his closest rivals.
The 17-year-old Arabejo now studies and trains at the Olympic Training Center in Florida, the same venue where another teammate, freestyle specialist Kendrick Uy is training.
Like Molina, Arabejo has also qualified to the Beijing Olympics following an impressive 1,500-meter freestyle effort in the World Championships.
The third Filipino Olympic qualifier is Fil-American James Walsh who made the grade in the 200-meter butterfly during the US national championships in August.
Rounding out the men’s team are Fil-American Daniel Coakley of University of Hawaii, Ronald Guriba of Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Nikita Dacera of TRACE Los Banos and Ernest Dee of La Salle.
Jacklyn Pangilinan, a student at Harvard University in Boston, leads the women’s team hoping to improve on its collection of three silvers and three bronzes in 2005.
Pangilinan settled for the silver in the 200-meter breastroke and a bronze in the 100-meter breastroke. She was also a member of the medley relay that won the silver.
Also returning is Erika Totten of University of Arkansas who placed second in the 200-meter freestyle two years ago. Totten also had a silver and two bronze medals from the relay events the last time around.
Another returnee is Marichi Gandionco who earned a swimming scholarship at the University of Nevada. She was a member of the bronzewinning relay team in 2005.
The other members of the women’s squad are Selina Gonzales, Nicole Santiago and Denjylie Cordero.

Be counted
http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2007/10/16/oped/jun.ledesma.sunbursts.html
is there any emergency fund available from malacaniang? they dont understand the urgency of need. their apathy towards economic impact and life of commuting hundred thousands commuters. i understand this is the primary bridge that absorbs 60-70% of daily 100 thousand vehicular traffic and about 80-90% of 150 thousand daily commuting public. what a disgrace

Councilors shelve application of five property dev’t projects
FIVE proposals pending before the committee on housing, urban and rural resettlement, mostly on land use reclassification, were not approved during the city council session yesterday.
The applications for reclassification of a property in Brgy. Indangan, Buhangin District and in Brgy. Panacan, Bunawan were the most delayed items as these were calendared for four times, but the councilors refused to approve them.
The 21, 749-square meter property in Indangan is located in an agricultural zone while the 62, 793-square meter property in Bunawan is within the light industrial zone.
Owners of the properties wanted these to be reclassified into residential zones for urban poor housing projects.
Yesterday, just like in the previous sessions, the council failed to approve the applications because during the voting proper, the applications could not muster the needed 21 votes, or three-fourth of the number of councilors.
An amendment to the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance such as an application for exemption or a reclassification requires three-fourth votes or 21 votes based on the number of councilors.
The application for exemption of Maria Nenita Burbe, MNY Burbe Aggregates and Supply owner, for two lots in Brgy. Upper Lubogan, Toril District, was also deferred. Burbe applied for the conversion of the area from agricultural to industrial zone as she is planning to set up a crusher plant.
Lubogan Barangay Captain Manuel Sayon, who appeared before the city council yesterday, said the barangay council approved the setting up of the plant because the owner agreed to set up facilities that will reduce noise and dust.
Sayon also asked the company to relocate the daycare center located in the vicinity of the property.
Councilor Leonardo Avila III, vice chair of the committee, said the barangay should ensure that the owner will sign an agreement that will specify all the measures needed to address environmental issues.
Avila said the Department of Environment and Natural Resources should also clarify if the owner should secure an environment compliance certificate considering that the crusher would constantly shake the land.
Councilor Arnolfo Cabling, chair of the committee, also moved for the deferment of the application for reclassification of Jonathan O. Suy for a property classified as a protected low density residential zone into a light industrial zone.
Cabling wanted to defer the discussion on the issue after three councilors opposed its approval.
Suy will operate a paper recycling plant in the area.
Cabling has endorsed the exemption stating that the project itself promotes environmental sustainability.
“The technical department has favorably endorsed the application,” he said.
Councilor Peter Laviña, chair of the committee eon commerce trade and industry said the plant “practically produces no waste at all.”
He said he visited the plant and witnessed that the plant does not use any chemical which could possibly seep into the groundwater.
“You should visit the plant so that you could appreciate the system,” she said.
Councilors Rachel Zozobrado, Pilar Braga and Victorio Advincula on the other hand raised their objections.
Zozobrado, who said that she was not informed of the inspection of the property, said the council should not allow the intrusion of development in protected areas to protect the city’s water source.
“We should never compromise our environment especially our water source,” he said she said adding that the mitigating measure of the company should be foolproof.
The councilors also deferred the discussion on the The Preliminary and Approval and Locational Clearance (PALC) of a subdivision development in Shrine Road named White Rock in Matina involving 7,000 square meters of property.
Based on the deliberations, the councilors found out some glitches on the project, among them soil stability as the property is along a slope.
A representative of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau said Eastern Ridge of Shrine Hills is highly fractured. “The area should only be a low-density type or R1,” the official said.
Avila also noted that while the subdivision is under the jurisdiction of Brgy. Matina Crossing, the property’s Transfer Certificate of Title states that is under the scope of Brgy. Ma-a.
Councilor Bonifacio Militar said the Environment Management Bureau should also clarify whether the application of ECC is needed.

Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007
Former world pool champions Efren "Bata" Reyes and Alex Pagulayan, and Rodolfo Luat also hurdled their opening day assignments.
Reyes lived up to his billing as the country's top cue artist by thrashing Jim Faircloth, 11-3. He will next play Marc Vidal, who downed Tommy Hernandez, 11-6.
Pagulayan, who is godfather of Corteza's son Lee Vann Jr., demolished Carsten Due, 11-3, and arranged a clash with Frank Alvarez in the next round.
Alvarez relegated Mark Pantovic to the losers bracket after beating the latter, 11-5, in the world-class cuefest that attracted 233 players.
Luat won at the expense of Hunter Lombardo, 11-5. He will have Ivaylo Petrov as his next assignment. Petrov defeated Thomas Wan, 11-8, in the winners' side 2 bracket.
Another Filipino campaigner, Ramil Gallego, was not as lucky as he was sent to the loss side 4 bracket after bowing to Markus Juva. Gallego will try to stay alive when he meets Huidje See in the next round.
Juva will have DC Mc Ginley as his next opponent. The latter defeated See, 11-9.
Jose Parica, Francisco Bustamante, Warren Kiamco, Ronato Alcano and Dennis Orcollo have yet to see action as of Tuesday.
Parica was set to play against John Harris, Bustamante against David Rowell, and Kiamco was to meet Georgio Mangola.
Orcollo advanced to the second round after Cliff Joyner withdrew. The Surigao native will play against Michael Dechaine in the next round.
A cash prize of $50,000 awaits the champion, while the runner-up will bag $25,000. The third and fourth placers will receive $12,500 and $7,500, respectively. (MLSA)

Duty Free Philippines opens third outlet in Davao international airport
DAVAO CITY, Oct. 12 (PNA) -- Duty Free Philippines (DFP) is projecting to generate P100 million annually from its third outlet at the Davao International Airport (DIA) which opened Thursday.
DFP general manager Michael Kho said the booming tourism industry in Davao City is an indicator that DFP can achieve its “conservative” target.
Kho said he is confident of meeting the target with the successful revenue generation which the two other duty free outlets at the departure and arrival areas of the DIA are raking in since they opened in June this year.
He also said since the third store has a bigger space, it stands to earn more than the other two.
Local and international tourists, balikbayans and local consumers remain the DFP’s market in its Davao duty free shops.
The outlets were also designed to cater to DIA’s passengers on regular flights from Indonesia, Singapore, and Macau.
The new outlet has electronics and supermarket items as well as other duty free staples such as liquor, tobacco, confectionaries, chocolates, fragrances, and fashion accessories.
“The opening of the third duty free shop speaks of the strength of Davao City in terms of tourism,” Kho said.
He said DIA is the first airport in Mindanao to have duty free shops and is DFP’s second provincial outlet.
Kho said the duty free shops in the city are not posing a threat to the malls and department stores as these cater more to the international market.
He said DFP opened the three duty free outlets at the DIA after the closure of an outlet at the former Mercure Grand Hotel. (PNA)
