Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said the current trend in the tourism industry has seen an increasing number of airlines in the region, including Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Singapore Airlines, offering low air fares. "The airline industry and the private sector in BIMP-EAGA region can hold dialogues to chart out a more aggressive joint promotional efforts with special tourism packages between the various destinations in Bandar Seri Begawan, Davao City in the Philippines as well as places in Sarawak, Sabah and Indonesia," he said when opening the Third BIMP-EAGA Travel Exchange (Travex) 2007 here Friday. Besides the four BIMP-EAGA countries, the members of the East Asia Inter-Regional Tourism Forum (EATOF) - China, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam - also took part in the three-day flagship event of the BIMP-EAGA Tourism Cluster, which is being organised here after a lapse of ten years since the inaugural Travel Exchange in Davao City in 1997. Taib said Sarawak has been actively promoting itself as an eco-tourism destination while the unmatched land and marine biodiversity around BIMP-EAGA presented the best selling point to promote BIMP-EAGA tourism. "It is much easier to commit towards working together in promoting sustainable tourism business in the region through a single platform, particularly as the people share a common Malay archipelago heritage, culture, identity and socio-economic profile," he said. He said with the travel pattern steadily emerging, that presented a great opportunity in the country's tourism industry, especially Sarawak. "The EATOP countries are also seizing the opportunity to form a consolidated joint strategy and sustainable working partnertship with the BIMP countries," he said. However, Taib said, Sarawak faced many handicaps at present, including the lack of air accessibility and infrastructure, which the relevant authorities needed to look into in efforts to sustain the growth of the industry in the long term. In addition to the 80 exhibition booths, the event host - state government through the Sarawak Tourism Federation and Sarawak Urban Development and Tourism Ministry - is also organsing a special talk by the Asean-Japan Centre, a Tourism Value Chain workshop by the German technical Cooperation group, the Sarawak Cultural Arts and Craft Festival and a BIMP-EAGA Food Promotion here. Foreign delegates and visitors to the ongoing Travex will also be able to witness performances by cultural groups from the Philippines, Indonesia and multi-ethnic Sarawak. - Bernama http://www.dailyexpress.com.my/news.cfm?NewsID=53718 dinabaw November 3rd, 2007, 11:57 AM Kulang ang 6 days. Almost 100MB man gud. welcome back Bagani ! :) paulkrps November 3rd, 2007, 12:15 PM very nice pic! i guess information online is very limited if at all there is any. paulkrps would have known some bits of history of this church as he grew up i believed with this "new look" since its massive renovation. and guess it is safe to believe him:D it was built through an expanse of time(early 70s). saw an old pic of this cathedral and i would say, massive rennovation into something like this would take some time to finish if it was financed by internally generated diocese funds. i could be wrong hehehe. it took quite a number of years for the contractor to be finished especially the alter. i dunno, they had a hard time deciding on the design. going back to the starting, the old cathedral was still there 1970. they must have started on it 71. we have moved to cortes (near mabini) 1970. we were living in valencia cottages in cortes 1972 was i remember we were attending mass in the new inside. we were in panorama 74 and they were still trying to finish off the cathedral. they were done between 75-79. their challenges - altar, the top of the facade, the glass windows. i remember the rostrum where the priest would give his homily was also shaped like the cathedral's top, is it still there? my family sort of nagsuroy one december night (one of those few instances with my father present) in 1970 in the old cathedral. i have some memories of the cathedral as our proximity to it, lakaw lang mi kung magsimba. dinabaw November 3rd, 2007, 12:16 PM Smithsonian Panel Backs Transfer of Famed B-17 Bomber 'The Swoose' Is Slated to Be Moved To the Air Force Museum in Ohio By Jacqueline Trescott Washington Post Staff Writer Saturday, November 3, 2007; Page C08 http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h73/davao_world/WWIIdvo.jpg The Swoose, a member of Boeing's Flying Fortress class, is the oldest extant B-17D. It was parked on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The Swoose made a reconnaissance flight that day and flew one of the United States' first bombing missions during the war in the Pacific. The plane engaged in the war's first U.S. night bombing attack on Davao Gulf a few days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. During the war, it eventually became a transport for a Air Force general. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/11/02/AR2007110202032.html originally posted by @MtApoStandard paulkrps November 3rd, 2007, 12:23 PM thanks! 1964 pa pala halos 10 years bago natapos :) edit: ok it said it was remodelled in 1964 , i guess the old church structure was still standing before late 1960's then in early 1970's it was totally destroyed to make way to the modern one ? i really strongly disagree with this (not you apo, hehehe). the old cathedral was still there 1970. they could based it when chiew started on the design. why? i remember those huge donation boxes for the new cathedral in 1970. dinabaw November 3rd, 2007, 12:23 PM ^^ i remember that rostrum too but viewing this photo i guess wala na. well their are happy times and "dark" day at San Pedro Cathedral http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/6940/sanpedroqd1.jpg (http://imageshack.us) Photographer's Note Every vacation trip would not be complete without visiting a town's religious center, so here i am in Davao's antique church. I thought by looking at the architecture that it would have to be 1960's or 1970's. :) As I said before, there is nothing on the internet about this most significant of Davao buildings. Special thanks go to MtApoStandard, well done! But my next question is why? Was the old cathedral too small? Or in a state of disrepair? Or was it part of a wave of modernism that dictated that Davao required a more contemporary expression of her Christianity? As architecturally interesting as the modern San Pedro is, I am surprised that they'd demolish such a nice old church as the old San Pedro. nikkixtrm November 3rd, 2007, 06:26 PM i miss davao. lol, i had a really weird dream about davao sm last night. nikkixtrm November 3rd, 2007, 06:31 PM check this out... http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/4048/citybannerzj0.jpg (http://imageshack.us) http://www.wowdavao.com/catalog/ i personally dont like this add o.o hm...its like it has subliminal message :ohno: http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/4007/fetch2be2.jpg (http://imageshack.us) KAIBAN DAVAO, INC. is a non-stock organization, founded by true-blue Dabawenyos, which aims to finance concerts, album-launchings and other activities related to the arts, to showcase the hidden talents of Dabawenyo artists. As architecturally interesting as the modern San Pedro is, I am surprised that they'd demolish such a nice old church as the old San Pedro. all of the above. my suspicion is termites. what i've noticed is, davao's soil is a rich breeding ground for termites. thing is, the old is not really poured or reinforced cement. it is wood with asbestos board or g.i. sheet cladding which is typical of davao's early structures, so all is wood inside which made it susceptible to termite infestation. but there is another thing, lack of love for anything old and historical because for them it is an eyesore. alasb November 4th, 2007, 05:29 AM good noon to all davaoenos madali lang po ba maghanap ng mga for rent na bahay sa city? yung pang 1 to 2 persons lang po. how much po kaya per month? tj_brewed November 4th, 2007, 05:42 AM ^^ mura lang ang rent ng house sa Davao City. The shape of this Cathedral used to puzzle me until recently, when I finally decided it is shaped like a boat. When you happen to stand right at the gate of Camp Domingo Leonor police barracks just across the street, you could almost say, only the masts are missing! By posting it here I don't mean to glorify the spirit of conquest that this Cathedral may stand for (if only to be blunt and honest about it) but only to reflect on that time of the past that hasn't gone away.As if to straighten out the rough edges of history, some groups who want to make their message clear love to bomb this Cathedral during Davao's most turbulent times, so, until now, as I drop by to light a candle sometimes, I can't help looking around just to see if it's not one of those days again. In the good ol' days of the early 90s, Sunstar reporter Charles Maxey used to love to recount to me how Digong , as what the media like to call Davao city mayor Rodrigo Duterte, had made a 60 year-old man accused of raping his 10 year old granddaughter to walk down San Pedro street to the Cathedral on his knees. I did not see it. I was still with Sunstar Cebu at that time but for Charles, it was a great spectacle that seemed to speak something about him and his people. http://davaodiaries.blogspot.com/2007/01/davao-san-pedro-cathedral.html abskess November 4th, 2007, 02:17 PM Nice thread sir Peng...:banana::banana: shaKEIRa November 4th, 2007, 02:44 PM Seawall http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/4518/1802402007e35d06d2d0si7.jpg (http://imageshack.us) wow!!! parang yacht club... abskess November 4th, 2007, 03:10 PM Atik doc abs! We were a bit disappointed that there was nobody else there but us — the owner said there were people around earlier though. Last Wednesday I dropped in and it was in fact full to the brim with partying young people. B&H opened only less than two weeks ago. The place is cozy and cobalt blue (check out the photos below). I like the layout: cushioned seats set against the wall and a ledge for drinks and whatnot on the opposite side. In the middle, a big-enough dance floor for about 10 to 12… unless a couple decides to do the swing! One plus factor: their Kurant-Tonic mix is absolutely my kind of drink! In the daytime, according to the owner, the B&H is transformed into a coffee shop. I suppose I have to go back there and sample their brews… What I don’t like about it is where it’s located. The two faces never meet. Just across Victoria Plaza mall in Bajada, the small Kimchi restaurant opens to serve droves of Korean students who come here each year for cheap English education. Kimchi is just one of several small Korean firms sprouting around the city in recent years to cater to the demands of a growing number of Koreans, some of whom have come and settled in Davao for good. But just a block away on the 17th floor of LandCo building, Young Il Han, the chief executive officer of the all-Korean development firm Good Morning Davao, has set his eyes on much bigger prospects in this city. He represents another face of Korea not easily visible down the street. The Korean firm, which opened last year, is putting in P410 million for its property development projects in Buhangin and the island garden city of Samal this year alone. Justin Choi, chief operating officer, says the company is putting up a 120-unit residential hotel estimated to cost P355 million in a 7,200 square meter lot in Buhangin area. The high-end facility will be equipped with an English language school for foreigners, including Koreans, a business center and a gymnasium. Alongside this project is the 12.9-hectare resort and residential farm subdivision estimated to cost P60 million in nearby island garden city of Samal. Both projects, which will begin construction in July, target the high-end Korean, Japanese and Australian tourists and retirees coming to Davao. Choi says that both projects will hire a total of 500 construction workers during the construction phase and 250 hotel management workers once the two projects are completed. Both projects only cover the first phase of the Korean firm’s development interest in Davao, he says. The Korean company is currently negotiating with Filipino partners for the development of a 760-hectare area near Davao city, where they plan to put up a P9 billion resort with a 27-hole golf course and a subdivision. The project, which will cover the third phase of the Korean firm’s development project in Davao, will include an industrial park, where they’re going to invite electronic and computer companies from Japan and South Korea to put up projects geared for exports. Choi says that the Korean company has chosen Davao from among other areas in the Philippines because of the big potential for property development that remains untapped here. “There is still much of the raw land area just waiting to be developed,” says Choi, his face beaming as he surveys with confidence the Davao landscape visible through the glass windows of the Landco Building. “We’re developers, we want new land, that’s why, we choose Davao city,” says Choi, who has experience in land development and investments in Japan, Korea and America. Their Korean-firm Kangwon Land Development Company has successful projects in Jeju island in South Korea and Kangwondo in eastern Korea. Before the Davao project, the Korean development firm has partnered with Filipino investors in putting up the Good Morning Land Corp., with the property development projects in Batangas, Nasugbu and Rizal in the last five years. But in 2005, the Koreans started looking for possible development sites. “We’ve gone to Baguio, Cebu and Boracay but decided that Davao City is best for development,” says Choi. “There is still much untapped potential in Davao,” he says. “The city is the second biggest in Asia, it belongs to Mindanao which has good resources and good weather (no hurricanes here), its international airport was constructed by a Korean company, it has a lot of good factors to attract foreign retirees, low prices with high potential for economic growth and plenty of chances to develop a very big project.” “Good morning,” he says, represents “hope” and “a good start.” Lou Pasawa, city director of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), says he expects the Korean project to have multiplier effect in the Davao economy. Pasawa says the construction industry has 60 ancillary industries that will benefit from its activities, among them are the small construction supplies industries, spare parts, eateries, and other downstream industries. Aside from Good Morning Davao, another Korean company is about to invest in coco peat production here for exports, according to Pasawa. Michael Kang of the Korean-based H&B Corp. plans to put up a new corporation for export production of coco peats—a fine dust from coconut husks—currently enjoying brisk demand in Korea. The Korean company wanted to put up three processing plants in Davao and surrounding areas, with combined capacity of 100 metric tons per month, says Pasawa. “They were here scouting for raw materials and when they saw the raw materials readily available, they are ready to form a new company,” he says. The Korean company is still preparing the necessary documents for registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). These big Korean investors, however, have nothing in common with small Korean firms also seen sprouting around Davao, says Choi. Lee Jinwoo, 29, a researcher in Davao for a Korean travel website nomad21.com, says Koreans are coming to the Philippines because everything in the country is very cheap. Even the price for learning English in the Philippines is only half or even a quarter of the price anywhere else in the world, he says. The Philippines is the fourth destination for Koreans to learn English after Great Britain, Canada and Australia. As Korea increases its job quota for Filipinos to 12,000 this year, even learning centers offering Korean language courses to Korean-bound overseas Filipino workers are also popping up. Whether we like it or not, the Koreans are coming, says Sonia Garcia, regional director of the Department of Tourism (DOT), who noted the trend among Korean visitors in the last six years. In 2006 alone, a total of 2,647 Korean tourists visited Davao, an increase from 2,622 who visited here in the previous year. Based on the DOT estimates of $90 average daily spending for each tourist, the number of Korean visitors last year could have spent some $714,690 (or P33.59 million) for an average three-day stay here. At the Kimchi Restauant along Bajada, it’s half past eleven but only a few Korean customers come trickling in for lunch. Curiously, the Korean restaurant looks deserted. It’s still the middle of May when most of the Korean customers are on vacation, a cheerful Filipina waitress points out. “At the opening of classes, they’ll be back and the restaurant will be full again,” she says. davaoeagle November 5th, 2007, 03:17 AM ^ How fresh...perfect for tinola or sinigang... davaoeagle November 5th, 2007, 03:29 AM ^ Wow! very homey ambience...:applause: Ibex November 5th, 2007, 03:40 AM Steamed Fish is good too in kikoman sauce...  davaoeagle November 5th, 2007, 03:47 AM ^ I can make a yummy "pinaksiw" out of it too... “At the opening of classes, they’ll be back and the restaurant will be full again,” she says. im positve theses investments are going to commence anytime soon dinabaw November 5th, 2007, 06:18 AM Footprints By Tony Vn. Figueroa Lagdameo’s ‘jewels’ Don’t look now, but two of the 20 cities under the Institute for Solidarity in Asia (ISA) programs, namely Panabo and Samal, are within a congressional district which, incidentally, is under the foster care of Rep. Anton F. Lagdameo. Other ISA-monitored cities around the country are Tuguegarao, Dagupan, Tagaytay, Iriga, Cebu, Dumaguete, Ligao, Tacurong, Tangub, and Toledo. Known to some as ‘Lagdameo’s jewels,’ the inclusion of these new urban centers can create a long-term impact on the development of both growth centers. While the ISA label carries with it the support for strategic planning to hasten business interest in the cities and the development of infrastructure and zoning, the local governments are also tasked to involve their respective communities in affairs affecting the government. Although a neophyte in legislature, Lagdameo draws his inspiration from recent links forged with congressmen in the Mindanao bloc. In fact, promoting the two cities as new business addresses has been encouraging in recent months on account of the positive developments on the ground. Lagdameo’s eagerness to leave a legacy early in his term as lawmaker is matched only by his keen interest in committee hearings. He admits that legislative work has its complexities, but the experiences drawn from the numerous tasks involved allow for a broader and more enlightened understanding into the workings of Congress. Panabo, for instance, is slowly being transformed into a bustling hub. In large measure this joyful advance is credited to the enthusiasm that local leaders are investing in ensuring the new city gets to its destination within timetable. On the other hand, the island-city of Samal, on its way to becoming the country’s newest special economic zone, is also experiencing a rebirth of its own. New interests in tourism, light industries, and marina have also been noted, and it is safe to assume that subdivision boom and beach resort development are not far behind. Central to Lagdameo’s development thrust is the ‘Barangay Una’ (barangay first) concept that was started by his uncle, former congressman Antonio Floirendo Jr. With the basic communities like agricultural villages, population centers, and settlement areas as direct beneficiaries, he hopes to establish livelihood hubs that will spur the growth of new opportunities and allow the informal sector to partake of the multiplier effect that comes with a successful home-based and coop-anchored project. According to the National Competitiveness Council (NCC), the ISA, headed by former Finance secretary Jesus Estanislao, has actually chosen eight cities around the country which it labeled as “business friendly.” These model cities, adjudged on the bases of being good place to live in, work and do business, are San Fernando in La Union, San Fernando in Pampanga, Marikina, Naga, Sorsogon, Calbayog, Iloilo, and Tagbilaran. Curiously, Davao City, once one of the most livable cities in Asia and the most child friendly city in the Philippines in 1999, has failed to make it to the list. For these cities to really be able to monitor its core plan, the NCC has strongly recommended the creation of an Office of Strategy Management. http://www.mindanaotimes.com.ph/column.php?id=3179 MtApoStandard November 5th, 2007, 06:19 AM Monday, November 05, 2007 Local Malaysian execs push for Samal Casino reopening LOCAL Malaysian officials agreed with their Philippine counterparts to touch base with Ekran Berhad for the possible reopening of the mothballed multi-billion-peso Samal Casino Resort. South Cotabato Gov. Daisy Avance Fuentes, chair of the recently concluded 2nd BIMP-Eaga Chief of Ministers, Governors and Heads of Local Government Forum here, said Malaysian officials from Sarawak will initiate talks for Ekran Berhad to resume its casino operations in the Island Garden City of Samal. Post comments here on President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's grant of pardon to former President Joseph Estrada. Post your comments on the explosion at the Glorietta 2 mall in Makati City. "There's no time frame to reach the objective but we hope we can do it as soon as possible," she said. The Malaysian delegation, headed by Minister of Industrial Development Datuk Ewon Ebin, vowed to constantly keep in touch on the development regarding efforts to urge Ekran Berhad to reopen its casino venture. Ebin vowed the "full assistance and cooperation" of Malaysia to accelerate development initiatives in the sub-regional economic grouping. Pushing for the continuation of the venture, Igacos Mayor Antonio Antalan said the possible reopening of the casino resort would be a welcome development as it would boost economic activities and generate employment for the constituents. With the closure of the Samal Casino Resort in 2000, the locality is reportedly losing P12 million in real estate taxes annually. The resort, developed at a cost of more than $250 million in the early 1990s, is valued at P2 billion before it was shut down due to continuing financial losses as a result of the Asian financial crisis. In 2001, it was reported that Ekran Berhad was selling the facility at half the price of its estimated value. Long-term lease was another option offered by Ekran Berhad to investors. Samal Casino Resort is located in Samal's Kaputian district where Davao Gulf's best beach resorts are located. The resort's total land area is 250 hectares but only 18 hectares have been developed. The original plan by Malaysian investors was to develop an economic zone on the site, which used to be a coconut plantation. The resort started operating as a hotel and casino in late 1997 with 300 rooms and a ballroom that could accommodate 3,000 people. About 300 locals lost their jobs when the Malaysians pulled out of Samal Island. The resort is about 30 minutes by boat from Sta. Ana wharf, Davao City, Mindanao's premier economic hub. Ekran Berhad is a highly diversified Malaysian conglomerate listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange. The company's biggest project was Bakun Dam in Sarawak which it reportedly failed to complete, but was paid a hefty sum for its expenses by the Malaysian government. Samal Casino Resort was Ekran Berhad's contribution to the East Asean Growth Area concept promoted by private business chambers in the region during the early '90s. The growth area straddles the countries of Brunei Darrussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. dinabaw November 5th, 2007, 06:29 AM lapu-lapu ba gusto niyo?:D http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/6091/001152pr9bh3.jpg (http://imageshack.us) For over two months now, I’ve never seen a big Lapu-lapu fish as big as what I’ve seen on August this year. I’ve been trying to get up early so that I’d be able to revisit the Agdao public market to see if there are big Lapu-lapus. It’s one of the most expensive fishes in the market. And even on the restaurants, it’s one of the most sold recipes. At the malls’ wet market in Davao City, Lapu-lapu is sold at least P200 a kilo ( ifI’m not wrong). While in one of the coastal barangays in Mati, it’s just around P100-P120 a kilo. See the difference? http://www.bacongco.com/?p=61 oh no. dili masakto sa karahay! Maxey FACING elimination, Lee Vann Corteza of the Philippines came out with guns blazing Sunday night to score a double kill and advance to the last 64 of the 2007 World Pool Championships. Corteza, the 28-year-old cue master from Davao City, toppled Chang Pei-Wei of Chinese Taipei, 9-4, then crushed Jeremy Jones of the US on the same note to avoid a shocking elimination in the world's biggest and most prestigious 9-ball tournament. Corteza, the reigning national champion and Turning Stone Classic titlist, had absorbed a heartbreaking 7-9 defeat at the hands of Goran Mladenovic of Serbia right in his opening match Sunday morning. With the loss, the Davao player needed to win his next two matches to advance. And he did. Against the fearsome Pei-Wie, Corteza summoned all his knowledge of the game before to pull through and force a winner-take-all match with Jones. There was more fire in Corteza as he blitzed Jones next for a back-to-back triumph and a ticket to the knockout stage. Former champion Alex Pagulayan, Francisco "Django" Bustamante and Ramil Gallego also advanced to the last 64 following impressive showings in the group matches. Pagulayan, who won the event in 2004, zoomed past Hamza Mohammen Saeed Ali, 9-0, and then trounced Austria's Martin Kemper, 9-6, to reach the next phase. Bustamante was likewise in dominating form, beating Zybneck Vaic, 9-4, and Jeong Young-Hwa of Korea, 9-0. Gallego won over Chan Keng Kwang of Singapore, 9-4 and Chang Jung Lin of Chinese Taipei, 9-1. A day earlier, defending champion Ronato Alcano, Efren "Bata" Reyes, Joven Bustamante and Antonio Gabica had also advanced. After two days, a total of eight Filipino players had already reached the last 64. The number is expected to increase later Monday as Marlon Manalo, Dennis Ocollo, Leoanardo Andam and Jeff de Luna are scheduled to see action. tj_brewed November 5th, 2007, 06:01 PM Angel Locsin's father came from Manaybanay Davao Oriental she's a Colmenares btw Wow paulkrps November 5th, 2007, 09:56 PM Angel Locsin's father came from Manaybanay Davao Oriental she's a Colmenares btw or is it banaybanay? dinabaw November 6th, 2007, 02:28 AM ^^ Hindi matutuloy ang HIRISE!!!!!! pero eto yung architect's rendering ng hotel! weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/Davao%20UC/550_hotelbuilding.jpg And here's the good news...tuloy na tuloy ang HOLIDAY OCEANVIEW SAMAL and their grand launching will be on Wed. Torres Tuesday, November 6, 2007 Mindanao fruits particularly durian are in great demand, with orders reaching P2.56 million in less than two months. Agriculture Assistant Secretary Salvador Salacup said the Mindanao Fruits Industry Development Council (Minfruit Council) sold 27 metric tons worth P2.56 million since Sept. 15 when a council-sponsored fruit festival opened. The fruits were bound for Metro Manila. Top grosser was durian which generated P1.6 million worth of sales. Other popular exotic fruits from Mindanao are pomelo, mango, mangosteen, rambutan, cashew, jackfruit, longkong and coconut. The strong sales reportedly prompted Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap to instruct the department to look for more outlets in Metro Manila through the agency’s accredited bagsakan/wholesale market centers. Prices offered by the Minfruit Council at the bagsakan centers are cheaper than those offered in Metro Manila supermarkets. “For durian, the council’s selling price is only P80 per kilo versus supermarkets’ P150,” Salacup said. The fruit festival was organized not only to increase the sale of exotic Mindanao fruits to the rest of the Philippines. It also helps reduce spoilage through direct sales by producers to outlets in Metro Manila and Luzon. “This is part of the market linkage program of the DA. We also want to prevent the spoilage of fruits in Mindanao and boost the farmers’ earnings,” Yap said in a statement. The fruits were sourced mainly from Davao City, Kidapawan City and North Cotabato in Mindanao. Durian is grown predominantly in Southern Mindanao, particularly in the Davao region. Industry figures show that 7,000 hectares of the region’s farmland is planted to durian. The area annually produces 18,000 metric tons of the fruit, which are shipped to markets in Mindanao and key cities in the Visayas and Luzon. davaoeagle November 6th, 2007, 04:52 AM Entertainment Ben Tulfo’s ‘bitag-style’ of crime-fighting FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo Tuesday, November 6, 2007 http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/tulfo.jpg He’s a Tulfo, all right, but Ben insists that he’s not a part of what he calls “the Tulfo package,” referring to his brothers Mon, Raffy and Erwin who are fearless crime-fighters. “I have my own style,” said Ben Tulfo who has come to be known as Mr. Bitag (as in trap). His style, “reel-reality investigative TV,” marks his crime-busting show on IBC Channel 13, simply called Bitag, which celebrated (“Quietly,” says Ben) its fifth anniversary last Sept. 14. Bitag (which Ben himself writes, directs and produces) stayed on ABC 5 for one year before it moved to IBC 13 (with a counterpart called Bahala si Bitag on UNTV, aired from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday). Actually, Ben is a tri-media person. He writes a column for PM (Pang-Masa), this paper’s sister publication, and hosts a program on dzME. “I am happy with the ratings,” he said of Bitag which relentlessly “traps” criminals and other lawless elements. “I’ve patterned my show after a short-lived US TV show called Fight Back which was aired in 1988. That show taught citizens how to fight criminal elements.” It’s a risky, life-threatening mission but Ben finds fulfillment in it, never mind if it means leaving his house in the morning and, as he put it, “not knowing if I’d go home in one piece at night.” The laying out of the bitag usually starts with a complaint which Ben and his staff thoroughly investigate. A surveillance is conducted and once the tips (usually coming from a victim, an insider or an asset from within a syndicate) are confirmed, an “undercover” operation is launched hand-in-hand with law enforcers, and then followed by a reconnaisance. (From Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary: Reconnaisance is a preliminary survey to gain information; esp: an exploratory military survey of enemy territory.) Explains Ben, “During a reconnaisance, hindi mo alam kung makakalabas kang buhay o patay. It covers checking the terrain for safety and getting a clear picture of the target area.” All clear? Time for the bitag to be set up. The catch is usually bountiful. Asked to name three of his most memorable — read: highly-risky — operations so far, Ben smiled. “Too many to just name three.” But he remembers his group’s bitag on a cybersex joint in Las Piñas City when a SWAT team mistook them for holduppers. There was some miscommunication and fortunately, no shootout took place. Or when Ben’s group was nearly fired upon by a trigger-happy resident of a subdivision in a Laguna town, who refused to give them a “right of way” to an operation nearby. Or when his group found themselves in NPA territory in Bulacan. You guessed it: Death threats come with the territory and, “battle-scarred” though he may be, Ben doesn’t take any chances. You know, no harm in wearing a sando vest or having martial-arts-trained bodyguards or a gun (yes, licensed) tucked inconspicuously in his waist — that is, even if you yourself are trained in martial arts, specifically Yaw Yan (yaw is from sayaw and yan is from kamatayan). They say that the dog that barks doesn’t usually bite, and it follows, according to Ben, that he should be more careful and cautious when the one making any threat isn’t making any noise. “Dapat mas maingat kapag walang banta,” he said. And never, never take the same route every day. I surmised that when Ben came to this interview at a Starbucks outlet in the Tomas Morato area in Quezon City, he took a circuitous route from wherever he and his ubiquitous but unobtrusive bodyguards came from. From Starbucks, I bet that he and company went still another route, the better to mislead and confuse the enemy, you know. It’s “reel-reality,” you see. So how long will he be on the job? “As long as I live, I will always be a part of the change for the better,” he said, hoping that followers of Bitag will not just learn “how to fight back” but also to be brave and have guts enough to help fight crime. Asked how, Ben said, “They can call me up for ‘leads’ and/or ‘tips’.” Is he, perhaps, driven by any political ambition? No, stressed Ben. “I don’t have any such ambition, not even to run for barangay captain.” davaoeagle November 6th, 2007, 04:59 AM Corteza downs Wu for $3,000 side purse (Corteza downs Wu for $3,000 side purse) Inquirer Last updated 03:48am (Mla time) 11/06/2007 MANILA, Philippines -- Reigning National Open Champion Lee Vann Corteza beat 2005 World Pool titlist Wu Chia-ching of Taiwan, 15-10, in their 10-ball match to pocket $3,000 at the One Side billiard hall in Malate, Manila, late Sunday. Under the government's Cyberservices Corridor project, the CICT has assessed and identified 20 key cities or areas ideal for BPO investors based on the supply of workers, real estate, telecommunications infrastructure, among other criteria. "We are working closely towards that goal and we are encouraging investors to look outside of Metro Manila," Roxas-Chua said in a briefing Monday by the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP). According to BPAP, about 80 percent of outsourcing activity in the country right now is within Metro Manila. BPAP's goal is likewise to identify the "next wave cities" to accomodate foreign investors and generate some 600,000 more jobs in the next three years. Aside from Metro Manila, BPO firms have either located or expanded their operations in cities like Cebu and Baguio. Over the last few years, other cities like Davao, Bacolod, Dumaguete, Iloilo, Dagupan and Bacolod have attracted investments. The following are the 20 cities or areas identified by the CICT as ideal for BPO investors: Metro Manila, Baguio, Cebu, Davao, Dumaguete, Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro, Bohol, Clark, Sta. Rosa, Lipa, Legazpi, Naga, Rizal, Bacolod, Cabanatuan, Dagupan, Subic, Cavite and Tacloban. The CICT is working with Department of Trade and Industry's (DTI) regional offices and local government units in doing its assessment. "We would like to be the coordinating body for investors in need of government assistance," Roxas-Chua said. Monchito Ibrahim, a consultant for the CICT working on this initiative, is confident the commission will achieve its goal of identifying 30 to 35 BPO hubs even before 2010. "The response from LGUs and the local private sector is very good. They realize the employment potential the BPO industry can generate," he said. davaoeagle November 6th, 2007, 05:17 AM Tuesday, 06 November 2007 PAL says lower airfare got the firm more passengers (http://www.mindanews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3201&Itemid=54) Walter I. Balane/MindaNews Monday, 05 November 2007 22:30 DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/05 November) -- The Philippine Airlines’ decision to lower the fare for travel to and from Mindanao has actually earned their firm more passengers as those who used to travel by land and sea could now afford to fly. "We got a portion of that market because our airfare is now almost equal to that of surface travel," Philippine Airlines’ vice president for Mindanao Dominguo Duerme said. Duerme said the cheapest one-way ticket from Davao to Manila before was P3,900. "Now we have a promo package of P648 one way ticket, plus taxes, which could sum up to around P2,200.” Cebu Pacific, PAL's competitor, earlier lowered its fare, even offering promos on advanced booking for as low as a peso for a one-way ticket to Manila from here, exclusive of taxes. Duerme told business reporters Monday at the Kapehan sa SM City at the Pizza Hut Restaurant that PAL, which flies to seven cities in Mindanao, has reached its Mindanao gross sales targets from January to October this year. He said they reached sales targets both for passenger and cargo, citing 80 percent loading average so far for the first 10 months of the year. Duerme is also the incumbent president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The increase in passenger traffic due to decrease in fare helped ensure the firm would not experience a 6 per cent dip in sales for the supposed lean months of the year from August to November. He cited no figures. Duerme said the increasing number of conventions and events held in Davao City has boosted its sales. Aside from Davao, PAL flies from Manila to Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos, Dipolog, Cotabato and Butuan. At present, PAL flies five times daily to Manila. But Duerme announced they would add one more flight by December 1 to accommodate more passengers during the Christmas holidays. PAL uses two 302-seater A330 planes, two 150-seater A320 planes and a 136-seater A319 plane for its existing flights. Duerme vowed to give updates as soon as the Air Transportation Office is finished with its investigation on a PAL flight that overshoot the runway in Butuan airport last month. He said they have attended to the passengers in the accident, including those who needed hospitalization. (Walter I. Davao Museum hosts this traveling exhibition from Ayala Museum featuring 38 finely reproduced paintings in a scale of 1:0.75. The exhibition chronicles one hundred years of Philippine painting from the late 19th to the late 20th century in the works of three artists – Juan Luna (1857-1899), Fernando Amorsolo (1892-1972) and Fernando Zobel (1924-1984). With the aim to enrich the appreciation and understanding of Philippine art especially by young students living outside Manila, Pioneers of Philippine Art demonstrates the pioneering role of the three artists during their time. Juan Luna was the first Filipino artist to achieve International acclaim. Fernando Amorsolo is the most famous and perhaps the most beloved of Philippine artists. Fernando Zobel was one of the first artists in the Philippines to be known for abstract art and had influenced several generations of artists. The original paintings were presented in one of the inaugural exhibitions in 2004, when Ayala Museum opened its new building to the public. Upon the request of Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, this exhibition once again will be presented at the Hambrecht Gallery of the San Francisco museum from October 2006 through January 2007. If you're like my father who watches CNN or BBC for breakfast, then its the war brewing against the Kurdish separatist group PKK. If you're like me who watches the Buzz, then its most likely Yilmaz Bektas. Hahahaha! Welcome to Turquoise Turkish Restaurant! A restaurant where our Muslim brothers and sisters can go to for Halal food. http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/3161/dsc00235ps6.jpg (http://imageshack.us) So what does Halal mean? According to an article by Sayad Fayed, in Arabic, Halal means permitted or lawful. Muslim followers cannot consume the following: -pork or pork by products -animals that were dead prior to slaughtering -animals not slaughtered properly or not slaughtered in the name of Allah -blood and blood by products, alcohol, carnivorous animals, birds of prey -and land animals without external ears. http://img456.imageshack.us/img456/8163/dsc00216uq4.jpg (http://imageshack.us) He also mentions that "Muslims are taught through the Qu'ran that all animals should be treated with respect and well cared for.The goal is to slaughter the animal, limiting the amount of pain the animal will endure. When an animal is slaughtered, the jugular vein is cut and the blood is allowed to drain from the animal. Remember, Muslims are prohibited from consuming animal blood." My brother told us to try this place so here I was with my sister, Nong N, and Henry. They serve soups, appetizers, rice, pastas, sandwiches, wraps, salads, chicken and beef specialties, fish, combo meals, and desserts. We had Katmer (P60) for our appetizers - a baked thin bread with ground beef as a filling. The taste is good despite it looking like an anemic and anorexic baked empanada. http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/3075/dsc00221so8.jpg (http://imageshack.us) http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/734/dsc00226dj1.jpg (http://imageshack.us) http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/9308/dsc00231ml9.jpg (http://imageshack.us) I had Turkish Kofte Kebap(199) - ground beef grilled just right and was served with french fries, simple salad, tomato, and buttered rice. The buttered rice and french fries screams carbohydrate redundancy but who cares, everything goes very well with the beef. This is just filling and I love this! The buttered rice reminds you of the Star rice in my generation, but only much better. You know what they say about star rice...it makes you tall! Hehehe. No Growee yet in my time, so you had to ingest the greasy Star Rice. I am a possible candidate for heart surgery thanks to Star rice. Huhuhu! My sister had Urfa Kebap Wrap (P119) while Henry had Adana Kebap Wrap (P119). Both wraps were a bit small. Maybe this one is a snack item or if you're on a diet this size would be right. Nong N had Beef Shish Kebap(P239), barbequed beef cubes in a skewer and served with buttered rice, mashed potato, and a grilled tomato. I guess he liked it since everything disappeared from his plate. We tried Ayran(P69), a yogurt drink served in this cool antique-looking vessel. Honestly, it tasted like milk spiked with a bit of chlorine, betadine, rust, and merthiolate-PROMISE! The dip they served with the dishes tasted great. I forgot the name of this but I'm sure this was made from yoghurt, garlic, and spices. Lastly, we had Sutlac(P89) for dessert. Turkey's version of rice pudding. It's a so-so dessert. Try their other desserts. The lady server was nice and helpful but the guy server? We didn't like him. Upon ordering our main course, my sister asked about a particular dessert and he said that it was not available. According to him, it was still on it's way from Turkey. Explanation accepted. After dinner, my sister forgot that she already asked about the same dessert and asked the waiter again. His reply - "Diba sabi ko sa'yo na wala pa yan?" Oops, not a very nice way to treat a customer. We asked for the bill and a small box was placed on our table. Sort of reminds you of Pandora's box. It's quite scary opening it. You don't know what's inside - a snake, evil spirits, or worse a huge restaurant bill! Hahaha! I have to give credit to Turquoise for presenting the bill in such a creative way. This was written on the menu - "Do not dismiss the dish saying that it is just food. The blessed thing is an entire civilization in itself, it is a rare art which satisfies the senses while reconfirming the higher order of society, community, and culture." Such a wonderful way of describing food, don't you think? From what we tasted, Turquoise food is unoffensive and delicious. Maybe it was adjusted to suit the Philippine palate or maybe I was psyching myself too much about their food being too spicy. I like Turquoise - it adds color and diversity in the food scene at SM. http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/4099/dsc00243pi2.jpg (http://imageshack.us) Oh and before I go...this is the second Turkish guy I know other than Yilmaz Bektas. This was according to Ferdinand Maranon, of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII) and who chaired the Davao Trade Expo (Date) 2007. The Taiwan Inbound Mission was scheduled in time for the Date. . "Robert Chen, the head of the Taiwan group who came here, has committed to come back in months time to assist our SMEs in food processing and packaging," Maranon said. He said Chen will also bring in another group of representatives from various companies in Taiwan that will extend assistance to Davao SMEs. "They would like to teach the small processors the proper packaging, like how to pack frozen products. They will teach our SMEs how they do it Taiwan," Maranon said. The Taiwan Mission is an offshoot of the Philippine Mission to Taiwan in June 2006 where food-exporting companies had the opportunity to observe the Taiwan Food Show and the Technology Exposure. The regional office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), which initiated the Philippine Mission to Taiwan, said SME delegates showed significant interest on the technology adaptation and acquisition of machines and packaging materials. For this reason, DTI-Southern Mindanao has organized the Taiwan Inbound Mission which brought selected Taiwanese machinery and packaging suppliers to Davao City in order to optimize the technology transfer and acquisition process. But DTI-Southern Mindanao has yet to produce a report on the Taiwan Inbound Mission conducted in the city two weeks ago. The mission was also designed to reinforce investment promotion efforts. The Taiwan Inbound Mission highlighted two events, the technology and investment forum, and the business matching. The technology and investment forum is an investment briefing for the Taiwanese businessmen and it provided them with relevant information on the inherent opportunities and investment potentials of Davao Region and Mindanao. The business matching, on the other hand, is the highlight of the mission wherein local SMEs that need particular equipment were linked to Taiwanese suppliers. Marizon Loreto, DTI-Southern Mindanao assistant regional director, said earlier that prior to the mission, initial pre-matching preparations were already conducted to facilitate the matching session. These included the conduct of equipment survey to SMEs where they were made to identify the equipment that they are interested to acquire from the Taiwanese suppliers. http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2007/11/06/bus/taiwanese.investors.vow.to.assist.davao.smes.html dinabaw November 6th, 2007, 11:05 AM Front Article Drivers, passengers next in city’s anti-smoking crusade By Rizalene P. Acac The Anti-Smoking Task Force will next run after erring drivers and passengers in public utility vehicles as the city government’s anti-smoking campaign is set to enter another phase. Engr. Alfredo Ruiz, the acting chair of the task force, said a series of dialogues will be scheduled next week to inform operators, drivers, police officers and other stakeholders regarding the new campaign. Ruiz, who presided the meeting of the 18-member task force yesterday at the City Engineer’s Office conference room, said the shift was made after the group’s successful campaign in reining in restaurants, bars and hotels in the city. “We have to be concerned on the establishment – it is primary. We have to prioritize due to the limited number of people in the task force,” he said. Traffic Management Center chief Celso Gempesaw said the agency will play a vital role in apprehending people who smoke inside public utility vehicles. Gempesaw said an Land Transportation, Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) law that was promulgated in the 70s prohibit drivers from smoking while driving. However, he could not cite the specific law. Based on Section 5 of Republic Act 9211 or the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003, smoking is prohibited in public places such as “public conveyance and public facilities including airport and ship terminals and train and bus stations, restaurant and conference halls…” City Information chief Alex Roldan also a member of the task force said the LTFRB law only provides for administrative sanction but the Tobacco Regulation Act has provisions constituting criminal charges. The penalties under the new law for Section 5 is fine of not less than P500 but not more P1,000 for the first offense; P1,000 but not more than P5,000 for the second offense; and P5,000 but not more than P10,000 and the cancellation or revocation of business permits and licenses to operate. The Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Ordinance or City Ordinance No. 043-02 also specifies in Section 2 that smoking is not also allowed inside PUVs. The penalties cited in the ordinance are: P100 or one-month imprisonment or both at the discretion of the court for the first offense; P300 or two-month imprisonment for the second offense and P500 or three-month imprisonment for the third offense along with the cancellation and revocation of the business permits. Sr. Supt. Efren Perez, deputy director for administration of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), said if passengers will smoke inside the vehicle, the drivers will also be apprehended. He said the logic is based on the “moral responsibility” of the driver to reprimand the passenger. Perez, who also warned to policemen to be models of the anti-smoking drive, said they will also conduct refresher courses on the anti-smoking laws. “Cascading on 9211 and the city ordinance, the elements of the force should be properly informed before the implementation,” he said. Perez said about 80 percent of establishments in the city have complied with the ordinance. Ruiz in the past interviews said 30 smoke-regulated and smoke-free establishments have been approved from January to August with pending 165 applications. During the eight-month period, 1,025 violators were arrested and 436 cases were filed in court. From the start of the campaign until 2006, more than 5,200 violators were arrested. http://www.mindanaotimes.com.ph/story.php?id=18383 Ibex November 6th, 2007, 12:43 PM Is there any new development sa project na ito?? Plata IT WILL not be long before foreign nationals doing business here will have to follow stricter guidelines as the City Council approved on second reading an ordinance stipulating the guidelines for foreigners wanting to do business in the city, as well as those who bring in here their own workers. With the approval, the ordinance is now considered approved in principle as the third reading approval is merely a formality and the ordinance will no longer be discussed. Proposed by Councilor Bonifacio Militar, the ordinance aims to set up a close monitoring system of foreign businesses operating in the city. This came after the City Council received reports that a number of operating businesses as well as foreign workers do not have the required permits to do so. The proposed registration procedure states that: 1) Foreign nationals must have the corresponding visa (business or investors visa) in order to engage in business. Tesiorna A CLASS-A relocation site for informal settlers is in the pipeline set to be put up by Davao City in the 23-hectare City Government property in Los Amigos, Tugbok district. City Housing Officer Cesar Dataya said they will start developing the site by next year, which was purchased by the city for P43 million. He said they will build about 1,200 housing units in the area that will be complemented with a paved road, electricity, water supply, basketball court and other amenities and even a commercial area where residents could do business. Dataya said the money for the development of the relocation site will be sourced from the P990 million loan of the City Government from the Land Bank of the Philippines. He added that the city have allocated P100 million from the loan specifically for housing and land development. He said they will change the way people expect of a relocation site. With the well-paved road and other amenities, the Los Amigos relocation site will be the first-ever "Class A" site that is comparable to other subdivisions. Dataya said they expect many squatters to avail of the City Government's housing program since the Los Amigos relocation site is just along the national highway. The homeless will be given priority, as well as informal settlers living in identified hazard areas, like the city's coastlines. The development of the Los Amigos site will hopefully be finished by the end of next year. The city just finished developing another relocation site in Tibungco amounting to P15 million with about 200 housing units ready for occupation. davaoeagle November 6th, 2007, 07:11 PM Wednesday, November 07, 2007 8 city products accredited with Davao Branding System EIGHT products of Davao City, ranging from floriculture, nursery, to processed foods now bear the seal of excellence of the Davao Branding System, which aims to institutionalize a local branding for Davao products that are of exceptional quality. This is Dennis Uy's favorite line, president and CEO of Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc. Dennis has never stopped seizing opportunities and to this day continues to amaze his family, friends and colleagues in the local business community as he lets heads turn on the national front. A self-made man who is at the helm of one of the fastest growing and dynamic companies in the Philippines, Dondon, as he is fondly called, also manages 15 other businesses in diversified industries. After getting his BS Management degree at the De La Salle University in 1993, Dondon worked as the managing director of his family's mining and processing business in the Composela Valley. He also found time to be an independent director of the Philippine Broadband Group International. In 2001, Dondon ventured on his own and established several businesses, one of which is the retail petroleum. What started as really small turned out to be a smashing success. By 2005, Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc. officially entered the very competitive retail petroleum industry. In December of 2006, Dondon was at the helm as Phoenix's 20th retail service station opened its doors to the public. Phoenix became a household name overnight when world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao and his team sported the Phoenix logo on their sports gear in his fight against Erik Morales in 2006. The world saw the Phoenix logo as Manny Pacquiao boxed his way to victory. Currently, Phoenix has its eyes on achieving its goal of opening its 50th service station in December 2007 as it aggressively expands its nationwide dealership network for its lubricant brands and services. This is now taking shape with the company's rapid expansion, strengthening its logistics, distribution and supply chain covering Luzon and the Visayas, while utilizing state of the art engineering design and technology for its service stations. Quite recently Phoenix entered into an exclusive supply agreement with Emarat, a leading petroleum products refinery in the United Arab Emirates. Phoenix now has sole distributorship of the Emarat brand in the Philippines. Phoenix also acquired a 3.5 hectare property in Batangas Union Industrial Park in Calaca, Batangas, to house a depot and distribution terminal to cater to Luzon's petroleum needs. Amid all these, Dondon led his team to history by making Phoenix the very first independent petroleum company to list in the Philippine Stock Exchange after the oil deregulation since 1998. The very successful Initial Public Offering (IPO) was held in July 2007. Despite being very busy, Dondon has found time to establish the Phoenix Foundation, an undertaking which, he and his wife, hopes to share blessings with the community. He is wholeheartedly supporting the Phoenix Foundation as part of Phoenix corporate social responsibility. Perhaps, Dennis is the archetypical of the company name itself. The name Phoenix was chosen after the legendary bird symbolizing rebirth and renewal of the human spirit. A young entrepreneur who has not stopped seizing the day, Dennis is now leading Phoenix to even greater heights and successes. davaoeagle November 6th, 2007, 07:28 PM Creation of ICT dep’t pushed By Carmelito Q. Francisco Published : 2007-10-24 THE Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry has joined the call for the creation of the Department of Information and Communications Technology that will map out plans for the industry. Andre Fournier, trustee of the chamber of commerce, yesterday said the department is important in promoting the country as investment area for the industry, adding that this will be one of the resolutions that will be submitted to the national government. “That is our biggest problem. We do not have a department whose sole attention is to give focus to the industry,” said Fournier after Commissioner Ray Anthony Roxas-Chua called on the business sector in the city to support the proposal. In his speech during the opening of the Mindanao Information and Communications Technology at the New City Commercial Center Mall, Roxas said the department is very important in drafting a plan for the industry. “(I)ndustry-related institutions must be transformed into a focused, `lean and mean,’ effective organization,” said Roxas in his presentation, pointing out that this can be achieved if the present commission can be turned into a department. “We really need the department,” said Fournier as he called on the legislative department to pass immediately a law that will create the department. Fournier said at present, the commission does not have enough authority in pushing for the development of the industry. He said a big body, like the department, is necessary in drafting a program for the industry, focusing on its authority to craft incentives for the possible investors. “Right now, investors run to the different agencies like the Philippine Economic Zone Authority, the Board of Investments just so they could obtain incentives. We need a single body that will have the authority to focus on issues concerning the industry,” he said. Just last week, Joji Ilagan-Bian, president of the JIB e-Academy, said locators want to have a body that to run to so they can obtain incentives. Bian pointed out the need for more investments in the creation of Philippine Economic Zone Authority-accredited zones where industry investments can be put up, like the one established by the Damosa Land Inc. Bian said this is very important in luring investors to pour in their capital, because these companies wanted to have better incentive packages so they can reduce their operational expenses at the same time increase their profitability. “This will also reduce the risks they are facing when the start their businesses,” she told BusinessWorld, taking note that some key investors have not considered Davao City in particular as investment area even when it has everything necessary for industry investments.
