Ben Tulfo’s ‘bitag-style’ of crime-fighting
FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo
Tuesday, November 6, 2007
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n233/davaoeagle/tulfo.jpg
He’s a Tulfo, all right, but Ben insists that he’s not a part of what he calls “the Tulfo package,” referring to his brothers Mon, Raffy and Erwin who are fearless crime-fighters.
“I have my own style,” said Ben Tulfo who has come to be known as Mr. Bitag (as in trap).
His style, “reel-reality investigative TV,” marks his crime-busting show on IBC Channel 13, simply called Bitag, which celebrated (“Quietly,” says Ben) its fifth anniversary last Sept. 14. Bitag (which Ben himself writes, directs and produces) stayed on ABC 5 for one year before it moved to IBC 13 (with a counterpart called Bahala si Bitag on UNTV, aired from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday). Actually, Ben is a tri-media person. He writes a column for PM (Pang-Masa), this paper’s sister publication, and hosts a program on dzME.
“I am happy with the ratings,” he said of Bitag which relentlessly “traps” criminals and other lawless elements. “I’ve patterned my show after a short-lived US TV show called Fight Back which was aired in 1988. That show taught citizens how to fight criminal elements.”
It’s a risky, life-threatening mission but Ben finds fulfillment in it, never mind if it means leaving his house in the morning and, as he put it, “not knowing if I’d go home in one piece at night.”
The laying out of the bitag usually starts with a complaint which Ben and his staff thoroughly investigate. A surveillance is conducted and once the tips (usually coming from a victim, an insider or an asset from within a syndicate) are confirmed, an “undercover” operation is launched hand-in-hand with law enforcers, and then followed by a reconnaisance. (From Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary: Reconnaisance is a preliminary survey to gain information; esp: an exploratory military survey of enemy territory.)
Explains Ben, “During a reconnaisance, hindi mo alam kung makakalabas kang buhay o patay. It covers checking the terrain for safety and getting a clear picture of the target area.”
All clear? Time for the bitag to be set up. The catch is usually bountiful.
Asked to name three of his most memorable — read: highly-risky — operations so far, Ben smiled.
“Too many to just name three.”
But he remembers his group’s bitag on a cybersex joint in Las Piñas City when a SWAT team mistook them for holduppers. There was some miscommunication and fortunately, no shootout took place. Or when Ben’s group was nearly fired upon by a trigger-happy resident of a subdivision in a Laguna town, who refused to give them a “right of way” to an operation nearby. Or when his group found themselves in NPA territory in Bulacan.
You guessed it: Death threats come with the territory and, “battle-scarred” though he may be, Ben doesn’t take any chances. You know, no harm in wearing a sando vest or having martial-arts-trained bodyguards or a gun (yes, licensed) tucked inconspicuously in his waist — that is, even if you yourself are trained in martial arts, specifically Yaw Yan (yaw is from sayaw and yan is from kamatayan).
They say that the dog that barks doesn’t usually bite, and it follows, according to Ben, that he should be more careful and cautious when the one making any threat isn’t making any noise.
“Dapat mas maingat kapag walang banta,” he said.
And never, never take the same route every day.
I surmised that when Ben came to this interview at a Starbucks outlet in the Tomas Morato area in Quezon City, he took a circuitous route from wherever he and his ubiquitous but unobtrusive bodyguards came from. From Starbucks, I bet that he and company went still another route, the better to mislead and confuse the enemy, you know.
It’s “reel-reality,” you see.
So how long will he be on the job?
“As long as I live, I will always be a part of the change for the better,” he said, hoping that followers of Bitag will not just learn “how to fight back” but also to be brave and have guts enough to help fight crime.
Asked how, Ben said, “They can call me up for ‘leads’ and/or ‘tips’.”
Is he, perhaps, driven by any political ambition?
No, stressed Ben.
“I don’t have any such ambition, not even to run for barangay captain.”
Ang TULFO brothers taga Davao? I've read na si Julius Babao is from Davao din daw! Calinan to be exact.
davaoeagle November 7th, 2007, 07:38 AM Yup Teej..the Tulfo bros are from Manay, Davao Oriental.

Davao region uses the most contraceptives, ARMM the least (http://www.mb.com.ph/PROV20071107107942.html)
Rose Palacio
DAVAO CITY -- Across Mindanao, the Davao region posted the highest in Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (CPR) while Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) had the lowest.
CPR is measured as the percentage of currently married women in the age group of 15-49 who are currently doing something to delay or avoid getting pregnant.
Davao region posted a CPR of 57.2 percent in 2006, up by 3.4 percentage points compared to 53.8 percent in 2005. The increase was due to the rise in the use of traditional methods of family planning.
ARMM posted the lowest CPR in Mindanao at 20 percent.
CPR is part of the Regional Date Dissemination on the results of the 2006 Family Planning Survey which was presented at the Grand Regal Hotel last Oct. 26, 2007 by National Statistics Office (NSO) Acting Regional Director Raul Gomez, Leah Magracia, Dr. Cemellie Bernadette Sabay, and Josephine Quianzon of the Institute of Primary Health Care.
In the NSO presentation, it was shown that pills still remained the most popular method of family planning in Davao region with 18.5 percent of currently married women adopting the practice. Another 11 percent chose to use the traditional method of calendar or rhythm.
More than nine percent of the respondents opted to have ligation.
Another popular contraceptive is the intrauterine device which is being used by 8.3 percent of the currently married women.
The experts said the success of family planning lies on the efficiency of the method used, correct usage, consistency and regularity of use. Unintended pregnancies among current users are often a result from misunderstanding of the proper way to use the method, switching to a less efficient method or discontinuation of use altogether.
The result of the 2006 family planning survey showed that in Davao region, 85.9 percent of the 174,000 currently married women in their reproductive ages surveyed still use the same method in 2006.
Two percent shifted to another supply methods, while 2.5 percent are now currently using a non-supply method. Almost 10 percent of the currently married women who were supply users in 2005 are now not currently using any method.
About 37 percent of the currently married women are not using any contraceptive method in Davao region. Reported reasons related to exposure to conception for non-use of a contraceptive method include age or difficulty in becoming pregnant, menopausal (or those who have had a hysterectomy), infrequent sex or husband is away or amenorrheic.

Stricter rules set for foreign traders doing biz in Davao
Walter I. Balane/MindaNews
Wednesday, 07 November 2007 08:05
DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/6 Nov) -- The City Council here passed landmark legislations asserting the protection of public interests and of local businessmen against foreign nationals running businesses in the city.
The two ordinances, approved on second reading at the City Council's regular session Tuesday, require stricter procedures for foreign nationals to do business in the city.
City legislators approved the proposed ordinance prescribing guidelines in the registration of business establishments with foreign nationals in the city and other purposes.
The ordinance outlined a registration procedure, requiring foreigners to have a business or investor’s visa, that they should apply for a tax identification number with the Bureau of Internal Revenue, that they should also apply for business registration either with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for partnerships and corporations and with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for sole proprietorships.
The ordinance also required the completion of a business permit from the Office of the Business Bureau. It also required foreign firms to get an Alien Employment Permit with the Department of Labor and Employment.
The ordinance provided also for the creation of an inter-agency task force, to be led by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, to monitor the business enterprise of foreign nationals.
Foreigners are allowed to own business with 60-40 ownership scheme, in favor of a Filipino partner. But Majority Floor Leader Bonifacio Militar, chair of the Committee on Rules, Privileges, Laws and Ordinances during the past council, said most violations are on the country's anti-dummy law against putting up Filipinos as front owners and also the retail law. He said most of the violators run “ukay-ukay” shops, bars and casinos.
Also approved was another proposed legislation to amend the 2005 Revenue Code of Davao City, which sought to include requirements for foreigners in areas such as health and sanitation, cleanliness and beautification, peace and order, zonification, among others.
Pushed by the City Council's Committee on Rules, Privileges, Laws and Ordinances, the passing of the ordinances came after certain incidents involving Koreans with questionable business engagements in the city caught the public limelight.
Militar passed resolutions to require the Bureau of Immigration and Deportation to provide the city council with a copy of a list of Korean nationals in the city. He also passed a resolution that asked the Bureau of Customs to probe the importation of golf carts that proliferate in the city's golf courses frequented by Korean sports tourists and also asked the SEC to check the legitimacy of establishments run by Koreans.
The resolutions caused the holding of committee hearings where recommendations emerged for the monitoring and regulation in the entry and exercise of businesses or trades by foreign nationals in the city.
Militar stated in the rationale of the ordinance that the increasing number of foreigners, specifying on the Koreans, in the city's business activities "has created an alarm and considerable doubt on the legitimacy of their entry, stay, employment as well as operation of business or trade in the country."
He said there is a need to protect local trade that is why the ordinance is imperative.
Militar said the measures are not meant to make it more difficult for foreign investors to come and flow in money to the city.
"We welcome foreigners but they should comply with our laws," he told reporters after the session.
Militar cited some businesses run by foreigners do not comply with Social Security System and Philippine Health Insurance Corp. requirements for employees.
He said of the 200 business establishments operated by foreigners in Davao City, only 32 are considered by the BID to be "legitimate" business organizations under the terms for corporations and partnerships.
Earlier, Sonia Garcia, Department of Tourism regional director for Southeastern Mindanao, said they also welcome foreign tourists, but they have to comply with local laws.
She told reporters at the height of the crackdown on foreign-operated illegitimate establishments that the DOT went with BID agents to convince the foreigners to go the legal way. (Walter I. Balane / MindaNews)

WITH only one hour and 15 minutes of sleep, the Davao Eagles team finished a four-day course in just three days and two nights to bag the title and surprise rivals in the just-concluded Carrera Habagat Bucas Grande-Siargao Island Traverse.
"We have proven that Davao athletes have potentials. Despite the hardship from seeking out for sponsors to the challenges of the race proper, we have proven that Dabawenyos can do it," team captain Paolo Dino Ouano said.
In bagging the title, the Eagles grabbed the cash prize of P40,000 after few attempts in the past editions of the country's toughest adventure race.
Ouano, along with Keith James Argones and logistics veteran Jeffer Jatico, finished fifth in the 2005 edition of the toughest adventure racing in the country. This year, former canoe-kayak member Leslie Herrero and Eric John Luna beefed up the team with another logistics member Arvikane Abejuela.
"I'm proud to say our teamwork was our best edge in the competition. We have a very efficient logistics team. They provided us everything we needed for the race considering that the usual seven logistic points was reduced into three," Ouano said during the victory dinner party at the Banca ni Kuya Ed Restaurant Tuesday night hosted by the Triathlon Association of Davao under its president Maritess del Rosario.
Ouano said they have already established their position on the first day after the 80-kilometer bike and banca legs and just maintained their pace.
"We didn't tire ourselves out. We walked instead of running. We reserved all our strength for the final phase," he said.
"The other teams were surprised to know that we didn't sleep. We planned to sleep on the first night but we weren't able to do so because we were so excited. On the second night, most of us have napped for 30 minutes. We thank God for the strength He provided to sustain us," 28-year-old Argones, a seaman, said.
"I think what also helped us was our good navigation and logistics," Jatico, 30, added.
Then Herrera, 18, also had this to say of their triumph: "I helped the team where I'm best at -- paddling. I paddled 20 kilometers during the entire race."
"We are the team to beat next year," Abejuela blurted out.
The team cited Maricel Sambo, who drove the Davao team to and from Siargao on her white Isuzu Crosswind. They also thanked their sponsors like Wendel Adlao of Pixmaker, Edge Outdoor, Higher Ground, Davao City councilors April Marie Dayap, Leonardo Avila III and Edgar Ibuyan, Mulatto, Triad members Justine Marie del Rosario, Bagani Evasco, Neko del Rosario, Anthea Kuehnel and Triad president Maritess del Rosario.
The team is preparing for the Mayor's Cup set on December 16.

NANNING (which means peaceful south), once a richly historical and ancient city of China, is the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and has become the hub of the vast southwestern region's passage to the sea, and the pilot city in China 's cooperation with Asean.
Rendered with the name "China's Green City", Nanning is now a highlight in China's economic development, and is attracting investors from all over the world as an important place in the thoroughfare that links south with north, and east with west in south China.
It was upon the invitation of Nanning Mayor Chen Xiangqun that recently brought our Mayor Rody Duterte and delegates to Nanning City, as a fulfillment of the friendship pact between two cities last September 4 in Davao, when Mayor Xianggun visited Davao.
The fruitful visit accomplished several things, the highlight of which were the signing of friendship agreement, and the planting of the friendship tree.
The first night was a dinner hosted by Vice Mayor Zhou Yi and the following day was a lunch meeting at Wharton Hotel with Mayor Chen Xiangqun, Vice Chairman Feng Jiaxiang, Vice Mayor Zhao Hongsheng, Vice Chairman Tang Jiwu, Secretary General Wei Ziguang, Foreign Affair Director Huang Juru, and Vice Secretary Qin Mengzheng.
After the two mayors' one on one meeting, the delegates visited and viewed the master plan of Nanning New & High-tech Industrial Development Zone (NNHITECH).
Established in 1988, the Nanning High Tech Zone exercises comprehensive economic management authority at city level to offer good-quality and high-efficient services to investors.
As the center of science and technology, culture and education in Guangxi, NNHITECH collects colleges, occupational schools, and research institutes, which are the strong support for developing high-tech industries.
It has become the backbone of Nanning's economic development and investment attraction. Nanning has an open door policy that encourages foreign investment and joint ventures.
The next day, the delegates were able to join in the festivities of the 17th China Chef Festival and 2007 Nanning International Tourism & Food Festival of Southeast Asia. At this feast, famous cuisines from home and abroad, dishes, and famous snacks were cooked by chefs from different associations, star hotels and restaurants, and individual operators.
As the most dynamic and open city in Guangxi's economic development, Nanning has received the honors of "Dubai International Award for Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment", "China Ten Top Cities for Eco-environmental Construction", "Award for Excellent Living Environment in China", "The Green City of China", "National Hygiene City" and "China Top City for Environmental Comprehensive Treatment", among others.
The exchange of visit is expected to boost and foster good business relations between the two cities as well as help develop tourism, good practices and cultural exchanges which both can learn from each other.
The Davao delegates were composed of Mayor Rody Duterte, Roberto Teo, Christopher Lawrence Go, Samuel Uy, Lorenzo Angbue Te, Jaime Cruz, James Gaisano, William Lima, Eduardo Bangayan, Jesse Cruz, Gapore Usman, Alison Cua, Yang Hongming, Liu His Pin, Wanda Teo, and Daniel Wong.

PHOENIX Petroleum Philippines, Inc. has more than one edge against big competitors in the petroleum industry.
According to Dennis Uy, president and CEO of Phoenix Petroleum, their company is homegrown, all Filipino business establishment. It has superior quality and service stations are in strategic locations.
Phoenix director for marketing Edgar Alerta echoes this by outlining the company's expansion plans before the year ends.
"We will have 22 more service stations across Mindanao, the latest will be on January. All these service stations are now under construction," he said in an interview Tuesday at the 1st Phoenix Corporate Expo at the SM City Davao Atrium.
"By next year, we will also have our own depot in Calatagan, Batangas, which has a capacity of 20 million liters," he said.
Alerta reveals that with acquisition of the depot, Phoenix Petroleum can supply the fuel needs of the entire Luzon.
He says most petroleum companies get their source of raw fuel from Singapore and that their prices are a bit cheaper than the competitors.
At least two more service stations are set to open Thursday, one in Sulop, Davao del Sur. On November 18, three Phoenix service stations will open in: Sasa, Davao City; Bao, Alamada, North Cotabato; and Tagum City.
At present, Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc. has 28 service stations across Mindanao. Only three are company-owned, while the rest are either direct dealers or franchises.
Dubbed "PNXpo, Proudly Dabawenyo," the corporate expo at the SM City Davao Atrium, will run until November 12. It focuses on three main activities: Franchise, Business, and Career.
The Franchise PNXpo invites investors to have their very own Phoenix Service Station for a minimum investment of P1 million. For Business PNxpo, Phoenix offers partnership for exclusive dealership of Phoenix Lubricants and Car care products while it welcomes commercial and institutional accounts for fuel brands.
For Career PNXpo, Phoenix encourages innovative and dynamic individuals with excellent work ethics to join and be part of the Team Phoenix.
The expo also features a photo exhibit, dubbed "PNX in pix", which highlights the history and milestones of the company.
Phoenix Petroleum targets at least 50 service stations by 2008. To know more about Phoenix Petroleum Philippines Inc., visit www.phoenixphilippines.com.

dinabaw November 8th, 2007, 02:38 AM The local government of Davao City is preparing to develop a “Class A”
relocation site for the city’s homeless and informal settlers.
According to City Housing Officer Cesar Dataya, the city has purchased 23 hectares in Los Amigos, Tugbok District for PhP43 million. The said land will be developed as a high quality relocation site complete with paved roads, electricity, water supply, and even a basketball court. The site would also have its commercial area where the residents can build and operate their own businesses.
The entire project would cost the city some PhP 10 million. Hopefully, this project would succeed in relocating the city’s homeless and legitimate (read: not scammers) informal settlers

davaoeagle November 8th, 2007, 08:48 AM Davao pays tribute to Carmen D. Locsin
The Locsin Dance Workshop traces its roots in the beginnings of Carmen D. Locsin’s teaching of ballet in 1947.
This was 60 years ago when the 21 year old young mother converted her living room into a ballet studio to teach five students willing to learn the rudiments of classical ballet.
On November 17, after thousands of students have had the honor of being taught by Davao’s pioneer of dance, some former and current students have come together to pay tribute to the founder of the Locsin Dance Workshop (LDW) in a dance concert aptly entitled Carmen D. Locsin’s LEGACY OF DANCE (The Concert).
Featured in the concert are LDW Alumni performing a jazzy Latin dance number and a highly technical classical ballet piece to be performed by LDW’s outstanding alumna, Krisbelle Paclibar, who is currently based in Hongkong.
Krisbelle will be partnered by Clark Rambuyon in performing Marius Petipa’s Don Quixote Grand Pas de Deux.
LDW current students, led by Monique Uy and Bernadette Falcunit, will be performing a wide diversity of dance from the neo-classical (Bach Expressions) to the trendy ballet (Hip Hoppin’ Pointes) as well as the nostalgic ballet (Dancing to Gershwin).
The Cultural Center of the Philippines joins Davao’s tribute by co-presenting this production with major sponsors, Dakudao & Sons Inc, Marco Polo Hotel, Mindanao Times, D’ Counter Executive Dormitory & Restaurant and Bagobo Hotel.
Carmen D. Locsin’s LEGACY OF DANCE (The Concert) will be held at the CAP Grand Auditorium on Nov. 17, 2007 at 7:00pm with a matinee on the same day at 2:00pm, for students only.
For more information, call (82)227-4753.

Back then, I was fond of watching Rescue 911 on TV. It was on Channel 9. I became busy with school that i missed most of its episodes. And then i found out that it got axed. Its now back, at reality zone (cable channel).
Here in davao, its known as Central 911. But people still call it rescue 911 or just 911.
The Central Communication and Emergency Response Center which was patterned after the “911” in the US is a project that uses a special computer software to help authorities respond to distress calls. The project was conceived during the first quarter of 2002. It was developed and made possible to help in fighting crime and lawlessness in Davao City.
The launching of the “911” in Davao, made the Philippines the only country after the US and Canada to adopt the system. Using the 911 system, DLPC used a modified version of its Geographic and Information System—and called it the Emergency Computer Aided Dispatch (ECAD) to help authorities locate the origin of emergency calls. The system even tracks how fast the police could respond to the emergency calls. The system also uses color-coded icons to monitor movement and location of police mobile units: Blue for mobile units at rest; Red for on the move response and Green for onsite, which means that a mobile unit has arrived in the site of emergency. - www.rvr.aim.edu.ph
The Central 911 team is composed of the following:
> Urban Search and Rescue Services - USAR
> Fire Auxiliary Services - FAS
> Emergency Medical Services - EMS
> K9 Unit
> Police
Based on the statistics provided at the central 911 website,
CENTRAL 911 Call Center received a total of 9,266 calls for the second quarter (April to June) of this year. A decrease of 0.53 % is noted compared to the first quarter of this year, 2006. However, compared to the same period of last year, a 9.01 % increase was observed
I have used 911 twice now. Both to inquire about the cause of the recent mindanao-wide blackouts. hehehehe. Yep.. you can ask them about that. Instead of waiting for reports or hearing unverified news from unreliable sources.
One funny experience in relation to 911. We though of ordering pizza for meryenda. I was trying to look for the number of the establishment. Can’t find it. so i dialed 911-11-11. Turns out that that number can only be used in metro manila. Someone from 911 answered. I said i was sorry and that i was in need of food and not rescue!

Davao choral group wins Asian tilt
Walter I. Balane/MindaNews
Wednesday, 07 November 2007 07:38
DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/6 Nov) – Davao City's renowned Himig Singers won the grand prize of the 1st Asian Choir Games in Jakarta, Indonesia over the weekend, City Councilor Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz said.
But Ortiz still could not give other details of the group's victory. The all-Dabawenyo choral group won in one of the 21 categories of the pioneering tilt participated by more than 70 choral groups, mostly Indonesian-based, from around Asia-Pacific.
The group was one of 12 from the Philippines that competed in various categories in the competition. According to the competition's website, the group was conducted by Aldwin Curambao and Alvin E. Aviola.
The other Mindanao-based group in the competition is the Xavier University Glee Club from Cagayan de Oro City.
The Himig Singers, recipient of numerous awards and topped several chorale competitions, reportedly sang the gospel song "The Walls of Jericho,” the Visayan hit "Usahay" and "Circle of Life," the theme of Disney's animated hit, The Lion King.
According to the group's website, the group is no stranger to national and international fame.
Apart from winning awards from the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) in 1990 and 1993, Himig Singers bested choirs from all over the globe in winning the prestigious “award of the audience” at the Vivace 2004 International Choral Festival in Veszprém, Hungary.
The Himig Singers won the first prize in the mixed category and the grand prize in the 26th International Youth and Music Festival in Vienna, Austria, in 1997.
The group also bagged the first prize in the polyphonic category among 48 choral entries from all over the world in the XV International Music Festival in Cantonigros, Spain, also in 1997.
The group performed before the City Council on October 2 as part of their fund raising campaign for the competition. The City Council committee on finance, ways, and means and appropriations spearheaded raising of funds for the group.
"We didn't regret raising P100,000 for the group," she told MindaNews.
The competition was held starting Nov. 2 to 10 to cover all categories according to age, voice parts and different music genres. The competition was organized by Interkultur Germany in collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism and other institutions of the host country. (Walter I. Balane / MindaNews)

Philippine Port Operator ICTSI Posts Sharp Rise In Income
MANILA, Nov 8 Asia Pulse - The country's largest port operator - International Container Terminal Services. Inc. (ICTSI) (PSE:ICT) - on Thursday announced that its income reached P4.21 billion (US$97 million) in the third quarter of 2007. In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE), ICTSI said their revenue from port operations went up by 39 per cent as compared to the P3.02 billion posted last year during the same period. ADVERTISEMENT
For the nine months ending September 30, 2007, net income totaled P1.672 billion, or P0.88 per diluted share, a year-on-year increase of 27 per cent over P1.315 billion in 2006.
The revenue growth was driven mainly by the strong growth volume reported by its operations in Manila, Poland, Brazil and Madagascar as well as volume from its new ports in Ecuador, China and Davao.
While, the peso appreciation significantly dampened the impact of the international operations, however, the company's international operations again contributed to the boost in quarterly earnings relative to the prior year period, accounting for 63 per cent of this quarter's consolidated net income, as compared to 59 per cent in the third quarter of 2006 and 60 per cent for the full year 2006.
"ICTSI has delivered another strong quarter of solid performance. Our four main terminals in Manila, Poland, Brazil and Madagascar all generated outstanding results which were somewhat masked by one-time start-up and transition costs at our new terminal in Guayaquil, Ecuador and losses at our terminal in Yantai, China as we continue transition of that facility from domestic to international cargo," said ICTSI's Chairman and President, Enrique K. Razon, Jr. "We are focused on bringing our expanding stable of newer terminals up to the same levels of profitability as our more mature operations which should add further upside to our earnings," he added.
For the third quarter, ICTSI handled consolidated volume of 811,049 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) up by 53 per cent than the 530,301 TEUs handled in the third quarter of 2006. The combined TEU volumes from the company's existing port operations grew 20 per cent over the third quarter last year, accounting for 37 per cent of incremental TEU volume for the period.
Likewise, the addition of new port operations in Ecuador, China and Davao (Philippines), accounted for 63 per cent of the incremental TEU volume for the period.
From January to September 2007, total TEUs handled were 2,095,798 compared to 1,448,074 TEUs in 2006 for a 45 per cent increase over the same period last year. On the other hand, domestic operations accounted for 412,945 TEUs handled, or 51 per cent of consolidated volumes, for the quarter in review. This is a 32 per cent increase over the volumes handled in 2006. Foreign container volume, meantime, soar to 82 per cent over the same period last year to 398,104 TEUs on account of high volume growth in Brazil, Poland and Madagascar, combined with new volume handled by the company's new subsidiaries in China and Ecuador.
Foreign container volume now accounts for 49 per cent of total. The company's consolidated cash operating expenses increased by 68 per cent to P1.83 billion, from P1.09 billion in 2006 while consolidated earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) improved by 25 per cent to P1.44 billion in the third quarter of 2007, from P1.15 billion last year.
Consolidated EBITDA margin slightly decreased to 34 per cent from 38 per cent in the previous year.

Moro peace group celebrates 3rd yr
By Ben O. Tesiorna
Sunstar Davao
THE United Muslim Council for Peace and Development celebrated its third year of existence as advocates of peace and development in Mindanao.
In a gathering at the Grand Men Seng Hotel Tuesday, Moro leaders, along with civilian and military officials who were instrumental in the group's creation, attended the celebration.
UMCPD vice president Alim Jamal Munib called for educating the people on the intricacies and culture of the Muslim world so as not to create further misunderstanding on their group and religion.
Munib said the common notion of the people on Muslims that they are radicals or extremists is a "disturbed" perception. He said true Muslims are peace loving and not terrorists.
He said because of this wrong perception, some people are actually "pushing" the Muslims to become radicals.
In just three years, the UMCPD grew from only 14 Muslim communities in 2004 to 70 at present.
Members include Muslim communities from Davao City, Panabo City, Compostela Valley, General Santos City, and Zamboanga City.
Several madrasahs and mosques were also built or rehabilitated by the UMCPD with the help of Task Force Davao.
Munib urged all Muslims to join the UMCPD and be part of a peace group that makes the world a better place to live in.

Multi-sectoral reps converge for econ gab
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
Sunstar Davao
REPRESENTATIVES from the private and public sectors, academe, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) participated in the discussion forum on "Services Industry: Growth Driver for Economic Competitiveness" at the Waterfront Insular Hotel Thursday.
Mario Feranil, officer-in-charge of the Office of the Vice President of the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (Pids), said the main objective of the forum is to disseminate information in the regional level on various studies and researches about the service industry conducted by Pids.
"Pids, in our 30 years of existence, had done a thousands of studies that affect the economy of the country. Most studies were undertaken by researchers from the different universities. We've become more and more aggressive in conducting researches and the regional and local levels are included whenever these researches and studies are made," Feranil said in his opening remarks.
Pids is established in 1977. It is a government corporation attached to the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda).
"This discussion forum will give us a chance to present to you the results of our studies and how the government, stakeholders, and policymakers can generate from the opportunities that the services industry can offer. This gathering will also enable us how services sector can be tapped," Feranil said.
The forum tackled services that give positive impact to the Philippine economy -- medical tourism, engineering, accountancy, and transportation.
Speakers who tackled various topics were Cherry Lyn Rodolfo, Professor of the University of Asia and Pacific for the medical tourism and transportation services; Dean Dennis Tablante, vice president for Academic Affairs of the Malayan Colleges for the engineering services; while the accountancy services was delivered by Tereso Tullao Jr., professor at the Dela Salle University in Manila.

Golf: How lucky we are!
By Imee Garcia
Sunstar Davao
"A WOMAN goes into the local newspaper office to see that the obituary for her recently deceased husband is published. The obit editor informs her that there is a charge of 100 pesos per word. She pauses, reflects, and then says: "Well, then let it read--Fred Brown died."
Amused at the woman's thrift, the editor tells her that there is a seven-word minimum for all obituaries. She thinks it over and in a few seconds says, "In that case, let it read: "Fred Brown died: Golf clubs FOR SALE."
Have you ever played golf without a caddy (and no golf car as well)? I tell you, it is not fun at all. Many of us are used to walking 18 holes, rain or shine. It's not a problem.
You hit your shot, then you start walking. You see trees, green grass, colorful flowers, picturesque ponds, creeks and lakes, and you cross little bridges and pass through narrow pathways, then back to the open areas filled with grass.
Then, you stop behind your ball and say, "8 iron." (or 7 wood, or whatever your choice of club is). Your caddy gives it to you and you hit your shot, then walk again. Ahhh, no worries...all you think about is what to do with your next shot.
If you play without a caddy, it will be like this--After hitting your first drive, you pick your tee up, take hold of your pull cart and start pulling while walking. Then, you stop behind your ball, get your own club, hit the ball, look up to see where it goes. (Usually, you look up much faster than if you had a caddy, and you make an error because of it). Then, you clean the clubhead, and afterwards, you place some sand on the divot you just created. Then, you walk back to the pullcart and pull the bag once again while you walk. When you get close to the green, you place your golf bag at the side, pull out two clubs--a wedge and a putter.
You go to the ball, place the putter on the side, pitch your ball with the wedge, and then place the wedge on the side of the green. Then, you remove the flagstick and lay it on the green, then you putt your ball, then hole out, and then, you return the flagstick back to the hole. Then, you get your wedge and walk back to your golf bag, return the clubs and start pulling again and walk towards the next tee mound. Tiring, isn't it? Imagine doing that for 18 holes!
Here in the Philippines, we should be glad we have caddies that we can afford to hire. Sometimes, people don't realize it. Without them, our backs tend to ache more because of the picking up of clubs and flagsticks, and pulling carts, and having to get your ball from the hole, and carrying your own golf bag, etc. etc. etc. Hehehe! How lucky we are!

Eden Nature Park turns 10
By Ana Felicia Dulay
Sunstar Davao
AMID cool mountain air, select guests wined and dined at the Vista Restaurant of Eden Nature Park two weeks ago, celebrating this premier mountain resort's 10th anniversary.
There was magic in the air, literally, a relaxed ambience under the cool pine trees and quaint lamps lending a festive air.
The performances of the Kathara Dance Theatre Collective and Alconera Project Band provided a perfect backdrop to the special occasion.
A short presentation of the mountain resort's history was given by Zaldy Magnaye, Eden's EVP/COO. Dinner was made special as guest partook of nature's bounty, garnished with the resort's organic vegetable and herb gardens.
Eden Nature Park, the country's leading ecological tourist spot, is located at 3,000 feet above sea level.
This man-made resort proves how man can nurture the environment, how we can build instead of tear down, and plant instead of cutting trees.
Among Eden Nature Park's attractions are the hiking and jogging trails, swimming pool, Fishing Village, vast playgrounds, animal Sanctuary, Flower, Prayer, Herb and Vegetable Gardens and tree nursery. Its latest attraction is the Zip Line, for the adventurous who want to sample a thrill of zooming across the trees at 52 meters high. Truly, there is something for everybody at Eden. Experience nature at its best, only at Eden Nature Park.

Standard man yata sa tanan ang charging.
Naay fixed rate per square meter. Normally the rates vary depending on the location sa sulod sa mall.
I addition to the fixed rate, naa pud percentage from the monthly gross sales.
So the impositions are not alternative.

Nong Toto's Barbeque
There's Toto's Bar up in Casa Leticia and Toto's Bar...beque. Hehehe.
This was a Monday which held a lot of firsts for me. First time to vote for Barangay elections, first time to play the drums at Time Zone (yes, i have my crazy fits!), first time to watch a movie alone since college, and first time to play bowling at NCCC with Helen and Ed.
Afterwards, I took them to their first Nong Toto's Barbecue experience at Claveria.
This post is not for the faint-hearted. This is for the fearless diners with well-developed intestines crafted from metal. A post your mother will hate me for. Bad influence si Davao's Food Huntress. Tell your mom that street food is a form of immunization - a process wherein you are exposing yourself to the immunogen in order to fortify your immune system and protect you from disease...I bet your Mom is fuming mad by now. HAHAHA!
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/5140/dsc00209ms9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
I love street food especially the fishballs at St. Paul's Church. My sibs and I even discuss which is better, the Manila or Davao fishballs.
I have tried frog eggs (don't take this literally) and has successfully forced my mother to eat those huge fried chicken in Shilin market in Taiwan. Along with my father and sister, we have eaten local pastries in Quibao town market in Shanghai and the same market where I saw Dog Humba! Huhuhu! My brother and I love the hawker stalls in Singapore - and satay is my fave. In Bangkok, my sister and I ate green mangoes with sliced onions and chili! Asia is a wonderland for streetfood!!!
Just so you know, you don't get typhoid from street food alone, you can get it in high places too. Even Henry Frederick Stuart, Prince of Wales, original heir to the throne of James I of England had typhoid. Hehe! I'm just a commoner, you know.
My mother would warn us about street food but hey, food is food. Mothers know best and I have been punished. I was hospitalized twice due to typhoid thanks to green mango and goto. I learned my lesson but that didn't stop me from having my affairs with street food...I get myself vaccinated every 2 years and to get a good hospital care plan in case my adventures land me in a hospital again. God forbid! Now back to CM Recto...
http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/2038/dsc00205xg2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
I was acting as a tour guide to my friends who willingly ventured into the unknown.
My cousin, introduced me to Nong Toto's barbecue years ago. She and her husband could finish x no of sticks! Hahaha!
There are 2 methods to approach Nong Toto's Barbeque:
Method 1: Dine-in/For here. No plates and eating utensils. Good luck.
Method 2: Drive-thru/To go. Pull over, roll down the windows approximately 2 inches - just enough space to let your mouth out and say "Baleg, P40 (or any higher denomination as long it is by a 20 increment)!", pay your dues, close the windows to prevent the smoke from getting in, wait for the goods, drive off with an evil laugh. MWAHA...MWAHA...MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Nong Toto was not there that time. He was off to attend to something important according to his assistant. I had the chance to make chit-chat with Nong Toto about a year ago. I learned that he gets invited to corporate parties. Even to Samal for an overnight barbecue stint. Sosyal ka Nong Toto.
His barbecue is quite good, though nothing fancy...it's the familiar soy sauce-calamansi (Philippine lemon)-pepper-Sprite-etc marinade. A bit small - only a third of the stick has meat skewered into it and the standard fat at the end of the stick. It's sliced thinly so it's tender but if it gets over-cooked it becomes though. It's really a bargain at 7 sticks for P20. So that's approximately P2.85714285/stick.
http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/6403/dsc00204fi0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
I just wished he had puso instead of rice packed in plastic.
A word of caution, the place is located in a dark location, so don't flash all your assets. I recommend you do the drive-thru method but if you're street smart-go ahead!
Toto's Barbecue for a quick and inexpensive pork barbecue fix - and while you're at it, you can do your evil laugh...MWAHA...MWAHA...MWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Christians, Muslims urged to teach interfaith understanding to remove wedge - official
Walter I. Balane / MindaNews
Friday, 09 November 2007 21:06
DAVAO CITY(MindaNews / November 9) – Leaders and educators in Mindanao of the world’s two leading faiths should not stop educating their followers on interfaith understanding “to remove the clutters of misconception” from even among their followers.
"The effort should be vice versa, on both sides," Aleem Jamal Munib, an official of the Davao City Madrasah Development Program, told MindaNews.
"This is very important. If we don't talk, misconceptions would prevail, causing distrust on each other," he said.
Among the key issues splitting mixed communities, Munib said discrimination remained on top.
“It is not only important for the youth to know their faith and culture, they also have to understand the other religions and cultures, especially in the Mindanao setting,” he said.
Interfaith understanding, he added, should be promoted and taught in Mindanao's schools as a support step, “side by side with on-going peace negotiations between the government and the Moro rebels”.
“Beyond the hard and contentious issues of peace negotiations is the hard fact that faith is still very important,” he said, adding that “Islamic knowledge is still key to peace and development in Mindanao especially on the Muslims' side”.
He said educating the Muslims about their faith in the madaris “helps clear the clutter of misconception about Islam and their relationships among other people.
"Islam is peace, but if the youth would not understand that, that's where the problem is," he said.
He said one of their allied organizations was conducting a survey on perceptions of Muslims and Chrisitans towards each other. He said survey would start in Zamboangao City.
But he said both Muslims, Christians and others should not stop on educating their faithful.
Munib said the ulama and asatids, both religious scholars, “are willing to go to Christian dominated schools, colleges and universities to help explain about interfaith dialogue and understanding”.
He said that local governments could also back the efforts of religious and academic leaders saying “such as the putting up of madaris [or Arabic-language schools] for the Muslims and the holding of interfaith discussions among students”.
He said local governments should find a way to invest in this effort, but shouldn't be constrained, too, if they have financial limitations.
But he cited the example set by the City Government of Davao. He said the city government allots at least P10 million a year “to ensure asatidz and ulama are given enough support in running the madaris”.
About 21 ulama supervised some 140 asatids in Davao City. The asatidz ran at least 44 learning centers where 2,500 Muslim youth attend regularly.
He said they still lack at least 15 centers to be able to say every Muslim was covered. But he said the local Muslims were fortunate “because of these opportunities”.
He said LGUs around Mindanao could also replicate what Davao City is doing.

Filinvest eyes new projects in Davao
by Prix D Banzon
Davao City (10 November) -- After given the authority to sell by the Housing Land Use and Regulatory Board (HLURB), the Filinvest Land, Inc. plans to put up the second and third phases of Kembali Coast, the first of its kind leisure-residential development in Mindanao.
In an investment forum held at The Marco Polo Hotel, Dennis Molina, sales team head of Kembali Coast said over 50 percent of the 400 residential lots were already sold out to buyers coming from the different parts of the country.
Molina said the lot size of about 1,000 sq. m. gives the home buyer the privacy and exclusivity they desire.
The project lies in a 50 hectares property in the Island Garden City of Samal where it offers view lots located along the city's highest elevation that boast of majestic views of both the sea and the entirely exhilarating island.
The ridge/cliff lots are sprawled over a rolling terrain that conveniently rewards easy access to the beach white giving an exquisite peek of the Davao Gulf.
Molina said the beachfront lots offer a spacious retreat each with a private path leading onto the fine white sand.
The Balinese-themed development gives one a taste of high-end resort living where a 1.8 km long beach line welcomes the residents to their home which is likened to a private own paradise.
Molina also said that the Kembali Coast offers numerous exotic amenities where every family member finds a personal watery haven.
Among others he said it also has a pristine swimming pool that stretches to a beachfront that houses an aqua sports shop providing day rentals and tutorial programs.
He said the residents can do skiing; wake boarding and knee boarding where some branded aquasports equipment are available. It also has Canadian banana boats and Australian kayaks for the sports enthusiasts.
"The Kembali Coast is every water-enthusiast's dreamscape where you lay back on the shore or walk along moors at the docking facility lined with personal crafts as you watch Optimist sailboats speeding by," he said.
He said at Kembali there will be fantastic fusion of activities with infinite space for leisure and no room for boredom. (PIA) [top]

ANTIPOLO CITY, Philippines--Samigue Eman was picked specifically to provide a talent-rich Magnolia squad something to look forward to in the future.
In the meantime, the 6-foot-9 prospect provided the Beverage Masters a sneak peek of what to expect.
The tallest man on the floor showed flashes of his potential last night by powering the Magnolia Beverage Masters to a 112-108 victory over the Alaska Aces in the Smart-PBA Philippine Cup.
Eman towered his way to a career-high 16 points built around flawless shooting and registered a conference-high five blocks on top of six rebounds and an assist in 25 minutes of action.
'He (Eman) did a pretty great job out there," said Magnolia coach Siot Tanquingcen of the team's prized rookie tabbed second overall in this year's draft. 'But he's a project and his value will be known two-three years down the road."
Eman, a former University of Mindanao hotshot, went 6-of-6 from the free-throw line and hit all of his five attempts inside the paint, including a pair of rim-rattling dunks that electrified the Ynares Center crowd.
Eman's last dunk, coming off an entry pass by Danny Ildefonso, and a three-pointer by Lordy Tugade from the corner delivered the death blow to the Aces as the Beverage Masters took a 109-102 lead with 24 ticks remaining to seal their fourth victory in six games.
Also contributing solidly for the Beverage Masters' cause were Danny Seigle, Dondon Hontiveros, LA Tenorio and Wesley Gonzales, who all finished in double figures along with Eman, Ildefonso and Tugade.
The Aces absorbed a defeat that snapped a three-game run fashioned out of victories against teams at the lower end of the standings--Welcoat, Barangay Ginebra and Coca-Cola--to split their six outings so far.
Reigning league MVP Willie Miller again shot the lights out after erupting for 28 points to lead Alaska.
Comfortably slumped on the driver's seat before halftime, the Aces suddenly lost their grip of the lead when the Beverage Masters shot torridly from the perimeter at the start of the third quarter.
The scores:
First Game
MAGNOLIA 112--Seigle 20, Eman 16, Tugade 14, Ildefonso 12, Hontiveros 11, Tenorio 10, Gonzales 10, E. Villanueva 9, J. Villanueva 5, Fonacier 5, Racela 0.
ALASKA 108--Miller 28, Cortez 17, Hugnatan 16, Ferriols 12, Laure 10, Bono 9, Thoss 9, Cariaso 5, Dela Cruz 2, Capus 0.
Quarters: 21-27, 47-48, 76-all, 112-108

Penong’s Barbecue. This place does have some good food! I like their Barbecue Chicken particularly. Penong’s became famous because they were the first in Davao to offer “bottomless rice” or “all you can eat rice” for a single price. As I recall, for about P12 or so (less than 25 cents) you can eat all the rice you want. They call it “All you Kanon” - Kanon means Rice in Bisaya.

In Eden Park, Davao City, you will see varieties of species of birds and other animals as well.
This peacock is only one of those and they do not live in cages. They just roam around the place as if they own it.
Take note, they're camera-conscious as well, because when I switched on my camera, this peacock and his other companions started showing off their beautiful feathers

Mayor returns to Mati silently
By Grace L. Plata
Sunstar Davao
FORMER Davao Oriental governor and Mati mayor Francisco G. Rabat has returned to his hometown in the City of Mati last Wednesday, November 7, without the public knowing about it.
Mayor Michelle Rabat, Rabat's only daughter, said his father wanted to return to Mati, after months of undergoing treatment for cancer in Metro Manila, without much hoopla.
She said her father is doing fine after the treatment and that the cancer has not progressed though it is still there.
"The treatment is over and the cancer did not progress but it is still there," Michelle said.
The mayor said her father is now "living each day as it is." She said they are trying to make each day special for their father. Michelle said despite the illness, her father's willpower remains unruffled.
"One good thing with my dad is the power of his mind, sinasabi nya (he says) he will be cured. Ibang klase sya. Ang amin is quality of life and extension of life for him," Michelle said.
On March this year, doctors discovered cancer in Rabat's lungs during a routine medical checkup. The doctors immediately ordered chemotherapy for the former member of the Philippine team in the basketball Olympiad.
From then on, Rabat's only contact in Mati is Mayor Michelle. Michelle said she called her father daily while he was in Manila to keep him abreast of the developments in the city.
The mayor admitted being emotional upon seeing her father who's been away for almost seven months. (BOT)

Bayang Barrios is erstwhile vocalist of Joey Ayala at ang Bagong Lumad. Bayang has toured several countries abroad-in the United States, Europe, and Asia as a singer-performer. After Bayang left Joey Ayala at ang Bagong Lumad, she produced her first album, entitled "Bayang Makulay" in 1996 under Universal Records. Since launching the album she has won several awards including: Best World Music, Best Arrangement, Best Song and Best Folk Vocalist for "Bagong Umaga", Best Folk Song for "Saan Nanggagaling ang Himig", and Best Folk Album for "Bayang Makulay" in the 1997 Katha Music Awards. She was also the 1997 Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA) Lorenzo Ruiz Awardee for Music for "Bayang Makulay."
"Lullabye Yang: Birthing Music And An Angel With Bayang Barrios"
Conceiving a child and nurturing it to term usually means a sabbatical from work for many women, including artists. But for singer-songwriter Bayang Barrios, it was a wonderful opportunity for growth, though pregnant she was with her firstborn, daughter Mayoomi. "A lot of people were calling up to work with me, and I knew right then that those nine months would be doubly blessed!" And so started one of the most prolific periods in Bayang's career, as she lent her unique voice and artistry to projects such as the Asian Tourism Summit held in Davao City last January, the music of GMA 7's hit shows "Encantadia", "Etheria" and "Pinoy Abroad", the hit indie film "Ang Pagdadalaga Ni Maximo Oliveros (with the song 'Isipin Mo Nalang')", and heralding the South East Asian Games this year with Ryan Cayabyab and the San Miguel Orchestra. She has also started work on another album, a collection of lullabyes dedicated to her new angel. No doubt another treasure trove of music from one of our most talented artists, new mother Bayang Barrios.
In a world reeling from the vocal histrionics of singing contests winners and their equally soaring idols, the music of Bayang Barrios is a welcome alternative. Intense and full-bodied, her singing never fails to mesmerize and she uses that remarkable voice to provide advice to the youth facing a darkening future and to give vent to her concern for nature, the welfare of indigenous peoples and other worthy causes. (Baby A. Gil) more>>>
BAYANG Barrios, grand prize winner of last year's Metro Pop songwriting competition, feels like a winner once again. She has just completed her third solo album, "Alon," which she and musician-husband Mike Villegas co-produced. (Andy Bais) more>>>

Nina Ingle has observed that Filipinos may be more familiar with diversity in the Amazon or Africa (from watching nature programs on television) than the richness and fragility of biological life in their own country. So she has set out to change all that.
Ingle is a citizen of the U.K. who works in the Philippines. There she hopes to strengthen local understanding of and commitment to Philippine biodiversity.
One way she seeks to do this is to become an award-maker herself. She plans to use the great bulk of her Emerging Leader Award to reward others with “Filipino Conservationist Awards.” These will assist persons “who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to conservation at the local level.”

Uy, check out the expansion of Metro Lifestyle. I think it is no ordinary construction, kasi they had to use yung parang tubo na tinatanim sa lupa to lay the foundation (similar to that of Eco4000 during the early stages of its construction). Kung ganon, baka mid-rise yung building (5-10 floors), otherwise, hindi kailangang gamitan ng ganun, aight?
you mean "piles" darry?
yeah, most probably if gamitan ng piles (except if malabot talaga ang lupa like SM ) mataas yan :) or at least "mabigat" therefore kailangan ng piles para maabot yung hardest part ng lupa para maiwasan lumubog ang building/foundation :)

Ad astra per aspera (Through sacrifices to the stars).
Humble beginnings
From the beautiful words of the late great pope, John Paul II College of Davao (JPIICD) finds a concise yet very insightful synopsis of its humble beginnings and that of its owners.
Moving into the unknown, newly-wed couple Ernie and Mercy Evangelista, armed only with great confidence, strong determination and deep faith in God, left family and friends in Luzon to settle in Davao. Like Abraham who left his native land to settle in an unfamiliar country, Ernie, in pursuit of his work assignment, brought his new family, embracing a life of total strangers, to what was known as the "Land of Promise."
The Evangelista family established the Philippine College of Innovative Education (PHILCIE) in 2000. Only one thing is known and certain for the family then: the vision to establish an educational institution – a center for academic excellence – that caters to less fortunate but deserving students of Davao City.
Unknown perhaps to many, the PHILCIE started its operations in the academic year 2000-2001 offering 12 courses.
Its first 342 enrollees were housed in semi-concrete rooms, vacated by the school that previously occupied the property before it was acquired by the Evangelistas.
What was once an intrepid move became a fearless step. In three years time, the top management decided to build a five-storey building to cater to the needs of the growing population. With complete modern equipment and state-of-the-art educational facilities, the new building could now readily cope with the demands of the owners’ vision to be globally competitive.
Simply stepping out fearlessly was not the only cup of tea of Ernie and Mercy. The couple’s profound piety coupled with their genuine fidelity to the Roman Catholic Church and their sincere adherence to the Roman Pontiff, the "Vicarius Christi," prompted them to rename the college – upon the advice of Archbishop Fernando R. Capalla in honor of the late Pope John Paul II.
On July 29, 2004, with an ardent desire to inculcate the teachings of the Holy Father on the young people of Davao, the college president and endorsed by Archbishop Capalla requested Pope John Paul II through the Secretary of State Angelo Cardinal Sodano, for a special permission to name the college after the Roman Pontiff.
More than a month later, on September 21, 2004, His Holiness Pope John Paul II granted the request to use his name "with the condition that the college must observe the moral instructions imparted by the Church Magisterium (Letter of Apostolic Nuncio)."
Like the Good Shepherd giving His flock assurance of His enduring presence, the Holy Father also expressed his continued guidance over the college that bears his name as he requested the good archbishop of Davao "to continue an attentive pastoral supervision upon the said institution to be sure that it remains coherent with the Church’s teachings."
"Knowing that I am with you." Truly, these words become a reality for John Paul II College of Davao in 2004. Presently, it is the only college in the Philippines that bears that great name with special papal permission.
Inspired by the person and teachings of the great pope, confident of his continued presence and assistance, the college faces the challenges that come in the pursuit of its noble vision and mission. Convinced that "no harm can befall", beyond what it can handle, its owners believe that sacrifices are the way to the stars. Hence, ad astra per aspera. Besides, they have these words of John Paul II to inspire them always:
"Do this in complete faith and confidence." With total faith and confidence, the Evangelista family places the college in God’s hands, believing in the words of then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI): "He who walks in the hands of God, should he fall, he falls in the hands of God."
Graces to be grateful for
With the Pope’s blessing and permission to use his name – and even before that – come bountiful blessings and favors in a short span of time!
Major achievements come pouring in. The most recent is historic for the college.
As John Paul II kept making history during his lifetime, the college also made history this year when its graduate, Engr. Alfredo Cahiles Gaborne, Jr., from Calinan, Davao City became the topnotcher in the Geodetic Engineer Licensure Examination given by the Board of Geodetic Engineering in Manila last September, with an 86.80 rating. In the same exam, the college also posted a 100 percent passing rate.
In 2005, with its first batch of Geodetic Engineering graduates, the college had a 100 percent passing rate in the Licensure Examination, with one graduate, Engr. Pijie Piñero, garnering the 4th place.
The same year also marked the 100 percent passing rate in the Elementary and Secondary Education Board Examination. A year earlier, the college garnered an 80 percent passing rate in the Licensure Examination for Teachers.
Blessings also come in the person of talented, creative and innovative studentry. A concrete proof that students of JPIICD do not just "dig holes on the ground and bury their talents." Students like Erick Clark Su of the College of Computing, won 1st place in the National Essay-Writing Contest in 2003 and also 1st runner-up for two consecutive years in the Technographics Competition held in Gaisano Atrium (2003) and in SM City-Davao (2004); John Quinneth Rodriguez was 3rd runner-up in that same competition; Joebert Togonon, another student from College of Computing, won in the Design Contest sponsored by COREL Draw Canada, held at NCCC Mall of Davao, October 2004; Gladys Braga of the same College won 2nd place in the Araw Ng Dabaw On-the-Spot Essay Writing Contest in 2000; Don Mitchie Castino, an engineering student, won 3rd place in the same contest in 2001.
John Paul II is not called "great" for shallow reasons. He was indisputably the force behind the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989. His considerable moral authority in promoting the ideals of unity and empathy led to the eventual breaking down of the Iron Curtain and paved the way for German reunification. One can rightly say, John Paul II is champion in promoting unity and teamwork.
Undisputable also is the unity and teamwork of JPIICD students as shown in their group victories in various competitions.
The College of Engineering, with its entry entitled "Computerized Household Water Consumption and Billing System," bagged the championship title in the residential category in the 2005 Annual Inter-School Competition and Exhibits on Engineering and Technology Projects, held at NCCC Mall, Matina, Davao City. On the other hand the College of Engineering won 2nd place in the 2nd Automation and Robotics Competition held at SM City last February 2004.

Peng Hok November 12th, 2007, 01:34 AM ;16409223']you mean "piles" darry?
yeah, most probably if gamitan ng piles (except if malabot talaga ang lupa like SM ) mataas yan :) or at least "mabigat" therefore kailangan ng piles para maabot yung hardest part ng lupa para maiwasan lumubog ang building/foundation :)
Wow! Thanks for the brief yet clear explanation.
But I suppose the gym equipment are not that heavy to require the construction to use piles, eh? Hehehe!
Let's wait and see nalang. Wala man gud sila nagbutang ug rendering. Hehehe!
WawaY[625] November 12th, 2007, 01:59 AM nah di yun dahil sa gym equipment lol :D
most probably
1. malambot yung lupa
2. malaki/mabigat yung building
one things sure though..di basta basta yan kasi gumastos talaga sila for piles..:)
Peng Hok November 12th, 2007, 02:08 AM Maybe both.
Swampy kasi yang Torres area from what I know.
But then again, even if the area is swampy, I still do not think the contractor would necessitate the use of piles if the structure would only be two or three or four levels anyway. Tama ba?
Tama ka Yet, mukhang hindi yata basta basta. But I hope the builders would post a rendering on the fence na. Hehehehe!

Lantawan1 - two lantawan points - 1 and 2
Last October 31, 2007 we travelled to San Isidro, Davao Oriental. We hired a passenger van and paid 180 pesos per head on our way to Barangay Bato-Bato where we would meet some other climbers summiting Mount Hamiguitan.
We depart from Ecoland terminal at around 12:00 midnight and arrived at Barangay Bato-Bato, San Isidro, Davao Oriental 2:00 in the morning of November 1. We meet with some other groups that are scheduled to climb Mount Hamiguitan - ADMCI or Adventist Mountaineering Club Incorporated. which comprises about 100 ++ participants. We Hitched a ride by their truck for 20 minutes on our way to Tumali-ti, La Union, San Isidro and paid 30 pesos per head. We arrived at the jump off area at around 9:00am and do some registration from local tourism officers who assist us on our needs like porters and guides. We paid 100 pesos for registration fee.
http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/5261/56185295cf5.png (http://imageshack.us)
On our way…
We started trekking at 10:00am and the the area is more abundant with Bamboo trees, Coconut trees and some river crossing just below the knee…
November 1, start trekking at 10:00 and reached camp 4 ( the first camp) at around 5p.m. We pitched our tent earlier and decided not to continue to camp3 because some members of the group are still far behind from us and accompanied by the sweeper (last man) . We were heavily rained for about 30 minutes just right after we eat our meal at around 7:30 in the evening…
http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/3518/45720249np2.png (http://imageshack.us)
Camp 4…
We ascend November 2 at 7:00 am after we packed our gears and had eaten our breakfast meal and reached bonsai forest at around 10:30 in the morning… before reaching this bonsai forest, we stop and take a glance at Lantawan- a magnificent view of the pacific and the landscape of the mountains can be seen and be amazed to see from a distance the blue waters of Pujada Bay and the Pacific Ocean…. refreshing!
http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/4657/63060027tn0.png (http://imageshack.us)
Lantawan2….
30 minutes trek from lantawan and you will reached Camp2 ( Bonsai Forest) - at last!
” At 1,650 feet above sea level, one can found more than a thousand hectares of 2-3 ft. tall century-old trees that are very sturdy that one can literally stand over it without falling.” It is like a huge vegetable garden in the middle of the jungle.
http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/3994/80484027kw3.png (http://imageshack.us)
How vast the bonsai forest is…
Located near the Bonsai Forest is the mysterious “Tinagong Dagat“. The area is uninhabited and is considered as one of the most puzzling phenomena of nature. The water, reportedly, has its high tide and low tide schedule.
The peak of Mount Hamiguitan is another walk of 1 to 2 hours from the Bonsai field and is 5,345 feet above sea level and to date there are 16 tree species found in the area.
Since my climbing buddy Carl and I have to return to Davao by Saturday afternoon, we joined another group who are descending Mount Hamiguitan and Governor Generoso as their exit point. We are excited because we will be like traversing the slope. My group where we joined summiting were staying for another night at Camp3. Carl and I started descending with another group who we already knew - The Sandawa Pro-Ecology Great outdoor (SPEGO) headed by Lyndon Sumaoy at around 12 noon.
http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/743/92741909jb5.png (http://imageshack.us)
Twin falls …
We arrived at Camp 2 almost 4pm and arrived at Camp 1 at around 6pm. the trek is very tiring since most of the time we are descending, and I can’t count how many times we’ve crossed the same river… it was a great experience hearing the flow of the gushing water from the river. - Not having hard time finding water to take. =)
We reached Camp1 at 6:00pm also known as Balonggo, We lit our lights at an empty house - half cemented and half wood. It was believed that in the 1980’s this camp is a village composed of about 30 families but were massacred by the armies because they are supporters of reds. - No formal or concrete evidence.
Right after we cooked our evening meal and pitched our tents. We dipped into the river and relaxed … what a great experience again although, I’ve done that before but it was great!
In the morning of November 3, Saturday I woke up 5am I ran into the river and weeeh! great ! heheheh - I feel like I am living in a free world - coz I’m naked bathing at the river… ^_^ I walked around the place and I see remnants of old houses scattered on every part of the hillside and I see big rocks being aligned as if there were inhabitants before dwelling in this area… Its like on the NatGeo and old city were traces of old buildings can be seen… but this, just a pile of rocks just 2-3 feet serving as a boundary of each spaces…
We started trekking at around 10am and the path is almost the same as yesterday but with less uphill… all are flat and some river treks and river cross… as hours passed by, I already see some villagers at their small houses at Purok 8 Barangay Sergio Osmena, Gov. Generoso. As we were walking I see this young girl of about 7 to 8 years old following us for a while … and We asked “where are you heading and why you are following us..” she replied “Gisugo ko sa akong mama palit sardinas” (Do errand to buy canned sardines) and we asked again “Where is this store? how far is it? coz it seemed you’ve been tailing at us for about 10 minutes… “ she just replied by pouting her upper and lower lips pointing to a direction where the store is.
We continued trekking and still the young kid is still tailing at us she don’t want to move forward and head a walk from us… Imagine buying a can of sardines would take this young girl(all villagers) to walked for almost 2 kilometers…
I also see kids at young age all naked running on the side of the river and I sighed hope life is like this again… I see in them how people lived way before there are no sophisticated cellphones… no cars, electricity… no bills to pay.. hehe just simple living.
We arrived at Sitio Badiang, Purok 7, Barangay Sergio Osmena, Gov.Generoso at around 1pm. and continued walking to Purok 4 where we negotiated a ride going to Poblacion Tibanban. We Arrived at Davao City at 6pm.
Mt. Hamiguitan a protected area through the “Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary Act of 2001″. Mount Hamiguitan is a favorite camping site of many local and foreign tourists, mountaineering enthusiasts, biologists, orniterologists and plain adventure-seeking people.
A regular organized climb is being conducted by the Local Government every 2nd week of May.
My adventure is over now… when will I have another time bonding with mother nature…
Now get back to work!
Thanks to Carl my climbing buddy for providing this shots. Thanks tol!

on Jose Oyanguren: A heartbreak hero
By Aida Rivera Ford
THE forgotten founder of Davao, Don Jose Oyanguren, who in 1848 vanquished the forces of the fierce Datu Bago and enabled Christianity to secure a firm foothold in Eastern Mindanao, certainly deserves more than a fleeting glimpse into his life and times.
No matter that he was a Spaniard - a Basque from the Northern province of Spain after which Davao province was named Nueva Guipuzcoa in his honor by decree of Governor-General Narciso Claveria in 1848 and the Christian settlement now Davao City Nueva Vergara after the city where Oyanguren was born in the year 1800 and where he studied two years of law before seeking adventure and fortune in Las Islas Filipinas in the year 1825.
Adventurer
He explored business possibilities in Calamianes - now Palawan - and the northern part of Mindanao particularly the area of Caraga which was often ravaged by Moro pirates. When the University of Sto. Tomas opened up a Law Department in 1835, he enrolled and received a degree - Bachiller en Leyes in 1837.
After a year, he was appointed judge in Tondo, Manila, an office he kept for five years after which he was replaced for a Madrid appointee. (This is the first setback in Don Jose Oyanguren’s life.)
It was back to Caraga for his business ventures. It may have been at this point when he met Maria Luisa Azaola, the Spanish lady whose family had a plantation and whose brother Antonio traded on the Gulf of Davao.
Tragically, Antonio was among the Spanish merchants brutally murdered on the commercial ship “San Rufo” in 1844 as it anchored off the coast of Malipano on Samal Island.
The Spanish Captain had presented a friendly letter that acquainted the Moros in that island headed by the son of Datu Bago that the Sultan of Maguindanao had ceded the Gulf of Davao to the Spanish government.
With complete complacency, the crew went fishing in small boats as the Moros brought on board bundles of beeswax with hidden kris and kumpilan. Too late, the two sentries noticed something surreptitious and fired at them.
The Spaniards and the Italian merchant were slashed to death and no one left alive except for two servants taken hostage who later escaped to tell the story of the treacherous pillaging and burning of the “San Rufo.”
Spain’s blessing
The outraged Don Jose Oyanguren was thus impelled to seek a grant from the Spanish government to head an expedition on the Gulf of Davao with the object of ridding the gulf of marauding pirates and to establish Christianity on its shores.
In 1847, Governor General Narciso Claveria responded by giving him three ships with the promise of a 10-year governorship of the province and six years mercantile rights. With the aid of his lady-love Maria Luisa Azaola on the main gunship “Elcano,” Don Jose recruited nativos to augment the soldiery from Manila and Surigao.
The final encounter with Datu Bago encamped with his three wives in his Kuta on the heights of Bankerohan took place in June 1848 after months of preparation on the part of Oyanguren’s force - piling up nipa palms on the swampy area from Piapi to Bankerohan to form runways for their cannons.
On the final battle, a brave son of Datu Bago fell defending the area before the kuta. Dato Bago’s eldest wife Gomogonop was hit in the kuta.
In the cover of darkness; Datu Bago and family slipped away in boats up Davao River to Tigatto.
The following day, June 29, 1848, Don Jose offered a mass of thanksgiving in honor of St. Peter on a site not far from the present San Pedro Cathedral where he later built a chapel of bamboo and nipa. Thus, Davao celebrates its feast day on June 29. The seed of Christianity was firmly implanted. From one Recollectos priest - Francisco Lopez, the number of curas who established reduccioness among Davao tribes increased.
Major victory
Governor Jose Oyanguren scored a major victory with the defeat of Datu Mama Bago. He waged a vigorous campaign to make the Gulf of Davao free of piratical threats and to invite natives to form reducciones or Christian settlements. He increased his army without authorization from the central government to counter the threat of brutal Moro raids as he made forays to the north in Surigao setting up roads for trade to flourish, and even ventured towards Cagayan de Oro - an unfortunate venture. His effort to conquer Mt. Apo was unsuccessful and heart-breaking as he lost 20 men to sickness.
But the greatest heart-break came from the Cabecera’s Accounting Department which hounded him for detailed financial reports while denying his requests for budgetary allowance.
On his part, he refused to tax the nativos in reducciones as he had given his word of honor that he would not exact tribute from the people who helped him in his campaign against terrorists.
His request for the central office to remit P10,000 for “sagradas obligaciones” was denied and instead on November 25, 1851 he was relieved of his governorship of Nueva Guipuzcoa and denied mercantile rights for “abandono” of his office!
And yet he holds no grudges.
In 1855, when the successor of Governor Antonio de Urbiztondo, the man who botted him out, asked Don Jose Oyanguren to make a study of the declining economy of Mindanao and Sulu, he submitted a brilliant 14-point recommendation asking Spain to do away with monopolistic trade putting up a port in Jolo for foreign rtade; inviting strangers of different faiths to Mindanao with their new ideas and aspirations; reducing tribute by half for the natives; setting up a tariff system on products to favor our producers and many other recommendations. Whether the Cabecera heeded his proposals or not, we do not know.
Broken man
On October 10, 1858, he died a broken man. It is recorded, however, in the archives of San Pedro Cathedral that a death-bed marriage took place the day before his lady-love Maria Luisa Azaola.
One final heart-break: The main street from the sea-front towards the center of present-day Davao City was named Oyanguren after its doughty founder, but by council decree it has been s`tricken out. However, Oyanguren street still remains in the subconscious memory of Dabawenyos.

Hotels with pools na kahit outsiders can take a dip but with a fee ofcourse. Eto yung mga napuntahan ko before.
- Apo View Hotel pool
- Marco Polo Hotel pool
- Grand Regal Hotel pool
- Crown Regency Hotel pool
Other resorts I frequently go to when I wanted a dip:
- GAP Farming
- JacksRidge (my fave)
- Malagos Garden
- etc.

Add to that exclusive villages, but for a fee, too, if you are an outsider:

You're absolutely right bro, most of the villages in Davao have community swimming pools while some residences in ultra exclusive addresses like the Ayala-Zobel's Insular Village have swimming pools in their own backyards.

Fuente de Villa Abrille (Matina)
Guadalupe Village (Lanang)
Rancho Palos Verdes (Mandug)
Orange Grove Village (Matina Pangi)
Forest Hill Subdivision (Matina Pangi)
Villa Josefina Village(Toril)

We already have a thread for Riverfront Corporate City. Nasa Projects thread under Philippine Forums. Are u asking if St Francis Towers is in Manila? It's in Ortigas Center. Sa may Shangrila Mall.
tj_brewed November 12th, 2007, 10:57 AM I think this is the link for Riverfront Corp City thread:

tj_brewed November 12th, 2007, 11:13 AM ^^ Dude, what projects do we have in Davao that can compete and can be posted in that thread po? Do we have any current highrise buildings which are underconstruction that we can post?
If you found St Francis Towers there, then it's not surprising considering its height and its type of development po.
glenntoy15 November 12th, 2007, 11:17 AM opo nakita ko po. tapos nakita ko ung mismong building u/c pa. sabi pa doon.
kung matapos ang building, un ang pinakamataas na residential in the philippines
tj_brewed November 12th, 2007, 11:22 AM ^^ Correct. If you want to create a thread for any highrise developments in Davao (if there is one) then ok po yun! :okay:
But personally, i believe that sometimes, we gotta know where we belong. Im sure there are alot of projects in Davao and im sure that Davao can compete globally! However, is there any highrise project in Davao now that can compete even with the projects in Asia or in that specific thread - the world?
Even Marco Polo - the tallest building in Mindanao, in the real estate industry (specifically in the condo world) is only considered as a midrise!
glenntoy15 November 12th, 2007, 11:25 AM yup tama ka. but we can wait for now. we will never know!!
glenntoy15 November 12th, 2007, 11:26 AM yup tama ka. pero darating din tayo diyan.

tj_brewed November 12th, 2007, 11:33 AM ^^ you're right...kaya i was wondering why u were asking po if pwede ba tayo gagawa ng thread dun eh wala pa naman tayong project na kagaya sa naka post dun..
Anyway, there is no specific definition if ano ang hirise, midrise, or lowrise. but here are some info for ur reference.
^^ I am currently selling (while studying and working) condo projects here in Cebu and in Manila. One of the projects im marketing is from Robinsons HRBD. When I was with Robinsons hq in Metro Manila, eto yung nashare ng head namin kung ano yung standard ng Robinsons when it comes to defining a highrise/lowrise/midrise. By the way, Robinsons is one of the top condo developers in the country today:
5-12 floors - Low Rise
14-18 floors - Mid Rise
18 above floors - Highrise
^^ yan yung standard daw sa Metro Manila and I think even here in Cebu. Well, in Mindanao, i think we have another standard as some local architects consider a 10 storey building as highrise na.
Sinjin P. November 12th, 2007, 11:34 AM ibig kong sabihin ung nasa ung nasa highrise na forum. hindi sa philippine forum na post. para makita ng buong mundo na kaya nato makipagsabayan.

Why, does it have a component tower that goes beyond 100 meters in height? Ang sa akin lang, h'wag po sana tayo maging sobrang proud sa mga development sa ating mga lugar since they may be too little in international standards. Nakakahiya nga yung ginawang thread ng isa kong kababayan dun sa international forums. :(
tj_brewed November 12th, 2007, 11:39 AM ^^ Agree!

Scott & Cates Coffee Express
I had to take my sister and Tanya to Salutti lest they kill me.
After a good dinner, we wanted to cap it off with dessert but they only have two on the menu so we decided to have it somewhere else. We boarded Tanya's car and went dessert shopping. The finalists were the Venue, the site, and somewhere in Torres St. Nada nada nada.
http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/9447/dsc00247iu1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
My sister had an idea, what about Scott & Cates Coffee Express? Why not?
http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/6814/dsc00250dl3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Upon entering the coffee shop, we noticed that there were 2 male servers...and we named them Scott and Kate. Hehe.
I had Carrot cake (P80)which was visually appealing on display but it didn't measure up. The cream cheese frosting which I expected to taste like cream cheese, tasted like whipped Crisco. My sister's carrot cake is way better than this, right sis?:)
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/7519/dsc00257wa0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
I ordered Blue Heaven (P110) since it was the house specialty. A pineapple-coconut concoction said the server. Hmmm...quite unique from the the usual drinks you see locally. If they add banana to this, it would be Mindanao's signature drink, signifying our top exports. Adding tuna to it would make it more authentic...ew....hahaha! I personally did not like it but I insist that you try. Your taste buds might like the combination.

My sister had Chocolate Moist Cake (P100) and tea.
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/2059/dsc00253cd5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Tanya had Chocolate Truffle Cake(P100) and Almond Bliss(P90 Tall/P105 Grande). Both orders were good especially the Chocolate Truffle Cake.

I'm an ignoramus when it comes to coffee but I found their prices a bit expensive for the Davao market. What do you think?
They have WIFI, a couch where you can make chika-chika with your amigas/amigos, and friendly service.
An alternative place if your favorite coffee place is full!

Cebu Pacific opens 3rd hub in Davao
By Nelson C. Bagaforo
Sunstar Davao
DABAWENYOS traveling to Singapore and Hongkong do not have to go to Manila or Cebu to get access to air service to reach their destination.
Cebu Pacific (CEB), the country's leading domestic airline, is set to expand its operations in Davao by making it the third hub after Manila and Cebu by May 8, next year.
The airline will base an A-319 aircraft and its necessary crew and support at the Davao International Airport (DIA) to service direct flights from Davao City to Singapore, HongKong and Iloilo.
Such move is expected to boost Davao Region's economy, with the future influx of tourists and prospective investors from both neighboring Asian countries.
"This is part of our commitment to develop Davao as a gateway into the Philippines and make Philippines, particularly Davao or Mindanao, a more attractive destination for tourism and trade," said Lance Gokongwei, CEB president and chief executive officer, in Monday's press conference at DIA.
The decision to make Davao as the airline's third hub is in preparation for a more expansive inter-island connectivity, as they plan to acquire more aircraft in the next few years.
He said their direct service from Cebu to Singapore and HongKong have been "very successful and there's no reason we can't do it in Davao."
"We recognize Davao as very attractive in terms of promoting trade and tourism... Davao offers the same potentials as Cebu," Gokongwei said.
Gokongwei said about 30 percent of the 75 percent traffic for direct international service to HongKong and Singapore comes from Davao.
New jobs for Dabawenyos will also be generated, he said, adding that support crew is needed for the maintenance of the aircraft.
"From our 40-man ground crew at present, we will increase it to about 60 as we need engineering support to the aircraft," he said.
The airline will also offer direct domestic flight to Iloilo.
Both services from Davao to Singapore and Iloilo will start on May 8 next year while service to HongKong on May 9. These new services will be introduced with a seat sale from November 13-20 this year.
"We will continue to expand our operations to achieve our goal of flying more travelers. And, with our continuous aircraft acquisition and base expansion, we hope to boost the country's tourism and trade agenda in the region," Gokongwei stated.
The airline also continues to pursue a 4th operational hub in Clark as soon as all the necessary government approvals to operate to Bangkok, Macau, Taipei, HongKong and Singapore are granted.

City Tourism to put up info desk at airport
By Carlo P. Mallo
THE City Tourism Office will put up an information desk at the arrival area of the Davao International Airport to cater to tourists.
"We have to inform the tourists of the do's and dont's of the city," City Tourism Officer Gerardine Angeles-Duran said during Monday’s Kapehan sa Dabaw.
Davao City has continually been home to an increasing number of foreign nationals who come into the city for business, education, and tourism.
However, the tourism industry in the city has been plagued with reports of undesirable foreign nationals in the country.
The latest report was a Korean national who was whacked by North Cotabato Vice Governor with a golf club for being rude.
Earlier this year, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has also sought the deportation of one unruly Korean national who was shown utmost disrespect for the city's anti-smoking ordinance.

MinBC appointed as graft watchdog
Sunstar Davao
THE Mindanao Business Council (MinBC) has been tapped by the Office of the Ombudsman to be one of the official anti-graft watchdogs for Mindanao.
Signed by Ombudsman Ma. Merceditas Gutierrez and MinBC chair Vicente Lao at the recent National Anti-Corruption Program of Action (Nacpa) roadshow at Holy Cross of Davao gymnasium, the agreement between the MinBC and the Office of the Ombudsman seeks to promote concerted efforts in combating graft and corruption in all levels of public and private enterprise.
As a sign of commitment to the anti-corruption initiative, the MinBC also pledged the creation of Corruption Prevention Units (CPU) in each affiliate chamber of commerce and industry association.
Aside from its reach and influence in the region's business sector, the MinBC was tapped in recognition of its existing Mindanao Coalition for Transparent and Accountable Governance (MCTAG) project carried out in partnership with The Asia Foundation under the auspices of the United States Agency for International Development (USAid).
Launched in 2002, the MCTAG project is implemented through a strong model of tripartism, composed of the local government, civil society and the business sector, and is geared at strengthening economic governance, policy advocacy and counter-corruption initiatives in the region. It has since been implemented in 16 cities in Mindanao.
The MCTAG's long-term development plan, PaglalaTAG 2015, hopes to promote and sustain economic governance initiatives which can complement the framework of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (Uncac), to which the Philippines is a state party.
Uncac guidelines stipulate that the country should commit to prevent corruption. The government needs the participation of civil society and non-governmental organizations to do this.
The appointment by the Ombudsman comes in anticipation of the Uncac ratification at the Second Uncac Conference of State Parties to be held in Indonesia this month.
As the representative of the private sector, the MinBC shall assist the Office of the Ombudsman in conducting lifestyle checks on government personnel, ensuring transparent and lawful government procurement and disbursement of goods, and ensuring the transparent collection of government revenues.

BIMP-Eaga SMEs adopt econ corridor concept
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
Sunstar Davao
TRADE and Industry Assistant Secretary Merly M. Cruz, Philippine Senior Official to the Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-Eaga), Monday said that the small and medium enterprise (SME) development cluster of the sub-region, has adopted the "Economic Corridor Concept" proposed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) during the 7th Cluster Meeting held recently in Zamboanga City.
ADB said economic corridors are geographically designated areas that facilitate cross-border movement of goods, services, capital, people, and information. They activate and accelerate trade, investments, and economic activities by focusing on transport linkages and infrastructure development.
The identified BIMP-Eaga economic corridors are the West Borneo, which traverses Brunei Darussalam, West Kalimantan in Indonesia, and Sarawak and Sabah in Malaysia; East Borneo (Sabah in Malaysia and East Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, and South Kalimantan in Indonesia), and Greater Sulu Sulawesi (North Sulawesi in Indoenisa, Sabah in Malaysia and Mindanao and Palawan in the Philippines).
"The adoption of the Economic Corridor Concept would mean opening doors of opportunities for the entire sub-region," Cruz said.
The Smed Cluster also supported the request for ADB to provide some technical assistance for the conduct of a pre-investment study in order to boost business ventures.
The study also aims to identify strengths and challenges to increase trade, tourism, and investments.

NCCC Matina’s Dancing Grocers
Posted on: November 12, 2007 by : hoop
Category : General, Davao | Viewed 14 times
My wife and I got treated to an interesting dance number by the NCCC Grocery clerks while we were doing our weekly grocery regimen. After the 12PM Angelus all the folks who weren’t attending to customers headed to the main aisles and started dancing in unison ala “Pinoy Big Brother.” Any massive synchronized conflagration of moving arms, swaying hips and stomping feet is definitely a sight to see.
After the dance number that lasted for about 5 minutes my wife asked one of the clerks why they did that. According to them it was initiated by management to “awaken” the shop people since they noticed that a lot of folks started to feel sleepy at 12PM. They started doing this around November of this year only. Quite an ingenious solution eh?
Too bad I didn’t have an camera equipped phone to record the dance
