re: sutherland

from this thread:http://www.davaosale.com/main7895157/viewtopic.php?t=65547&start=15

do you have a permanent site, location or office here in davao? i heard training was cut abruptly a few months ago and the whole thing was shady.i have three friends in the same batch that trained under your company at tesda.

how can the applicants be assured that something like that wont happen again and that this is a sure thing now? especially considering the means and place in which your interviews are done? no permanent time or place. there's a one day notice on the time and venue of the place of interview. moreover, it doesn't seem like a conducive place for an interview.

i am in no way black balling your company. i heard that compensation is great and i ask these things because i too am interested in applying. i just want to be sure. especially on the subject of this job being davao based.

thank you very much.
We understand your concerns.

There is new management now, and a smoother recruitment process. For the trainees who stuck it out with Sutherland a couple of months back and decided to go to clark, they are already back in Davao.

Generally interviews should be held there (TESDA), we schedule them for convenience downtown. The day before schedule is also because we also confirm a certain number of applicants before setting up a date. As it is, it is the company reaching out to the applicants to make it more convenient for them.

As this month ends and december begins, screening will become better organized.

Sutherland is very happy with the employment pool of Davao, and is really looking forward to opening its doors next year.

Thanks!

Upgraded Davao City International Airport Is Ready for More Passengers and Bigger Aircraft
By Rita Festin

WITH AIR transportation crucial to economic and social connectivity in the Philippine (http://www.adb.org/Philippines) archipelago, the new $128 million state-of-the-art international airport in this city is a welcome development. It is now fully operational and is raring to take in more passengers and bigger aircraft.

With ADB financing, the Davao airport in Mindanao has been upgraded and expanded to provide reliable and safe all-weather operations that meet international standards and remove infrastructure bottlenecks which were constraining the growth of domestic and international air services. It will also enhance Davao’s access to nearby markets and improve the overall economic prospects of the Southern Philippines, and could be considered one vital link for the intermodal transport network essential for this area.
Last year, actual passenger volume already surpassed one million domestic passengers flown in by Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Air Philippines and Asian Spirit out of 14 daily local flights. International passengers to and from Manado and Singapore (http://www.adb.org/Singapore) reached almost 25,000. But Davao’s spacious and modern terminal building is designed to accommodate much more, and can easily accommodate up to twice its designed minimum passenger capacity of one million passengers.

The old airport terminal accommodated less than one million passengers in its last year of operation. It did not attract international flights and the city therefore fell short of its strategic role in the Brunei, Indonesia (http://www.adb.org/Indonesia), Malaysia (http://www.adb.org/Malaysia), Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). The passenger terminal had exceeded its capacity and the instrument landing system was not usable for precision approaches and landings. As a result, international flights did not fly to and from Davao, and international passengers heading for or leaving Davao were forced to use Manila as a transfer point.
Today, its present daily passenger volume is roughly 1,500, with the early morning peak hour servicing the bulk of that number. The succeeding flights do not have as much passenger traffic. But even at its peak, the airport can handle the steady inflow of passengers with its 14 domestic and 14 international check-in counters, almost double than its previous number of counters. The Check-in counters are equipped with electronic weighing scales and conveyors and its baggage handling system is also computerized.

The upgraded airport was funded through a loan from ADB, approved in 1994, which provided $41 million while the European Investment Bank provided $23 million. The original cost of the project was $105 million but due to foreign exchange escalation costs, the Asian financial crisis, and land acquisition costs, total cost of the Project reached $128 million.
The airport, officially named Francisco Bangoy International Airport, opened on 2 December 2003. The 209-hectare airport development for both airside and landside civil works was constructed in four years’ time. The airport upgrading consisted of runway extension of 500 meters, achieving a usable take-off length of 3,000 meters that could now accommodate currently operated wide-body aircraft of major airlines, even 747s. The installation of a new landing instrumentation system (ILS) for both Runways 05 and 23 upgraded its compliance to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) operating category - Precision Approach Category 1, similar to Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport. It can accommodate 8 to 10 aircraft landings per hour, depending on the size, and has the equivalent 8 gate holding areas for those aircraft.

“The Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower is considered the most advanced here in the Philippines, even more sophisticated than NAIA’s,” boasts assistant airport manager Joey Saddam who was then the project manager of the airport construction.

The project also covers the construction of a new Malay architecture-inspired terminal building which cost P1 billion and is four times bigger than the old airport terminal. It is highly computerized, more secure, and has more commercial spaces for concessionaires at approximately 9,000 sq. m. It has four new units of boarding bridges for passengers. Airport Manager Frederick San Felix considers their security system quite strict. Baggage is regularly screened three times prior to passenger check-in/boarding. “It’s better that you know that all the baggages have been thoroughly checked… for your own protection,” he stresses.
Besides the main terminal building, there are also new support facilities like the Administration Building, the Central Plant Building, Airfield Maintenance Building, and Fire/Crash/Rescue Building. It has a 688-slot car parking area and 4 slots for shuttle buses. It has a 3-megawatt standby power generator.

The Energy Management Control System for the centralized air conditioning system, electrical and lights system, is now located in just one room. Its Access Control System ensures that not all airport personnel have access to all areas of the airport such that certain cards can only enter selected doors and everybody entering them is registered.

It also has a Flight Information Display System and Closed Circuit Television System complementing the terminal’s security system. The Cargo Terminal Building covers almost 5,580 sq. meters and can handle up to 84,600 tons a year. In 2005, actual cargo volume was almost 44,000 tons.

With such modern facilities, the Davao City airport officials feel they can justify their proposed five-fold increase in terminal fees from P40 to P200 per passenger, the same as the fee being charged in Manila and Cebu airports. Rentals are also proposed to be increased to raise the airport’s revenues, which only grossed almost P120 million in 2005, for its future sustainability.
With a modern international airport in place, it is hoped that the vast economic potentials of Mindanao will finally be unlocked and optimized to the fullest after decades-long peace and order problems and poverty (http://www.adb.org/Poverty) concerns.

Heightened austerity measures eyed in gov’t agencies
By glenrose on Nov 21, 2007 in News

By Rose Palacio

Davao City — The government austerity measures are being heightened following the increase of oil products in the world market amidst the strengthening of the Philippine peso.

Davao City second district Congressman Vincent Garcia, who is a member of the house committee on energy said the runaway price of oil is beyond the control of the government since this is being dictated by the world market.

“Everyone is enjoined to employ stronger conservation measures. Now is the time to unite our efforts and give our share as a consolation to our current energy situation”, he said.

The government has included deeper spending cuts and higher collection of taxes to balance the target budget deficit.

Congressman Garcia said the lower house is now pushing for the immediate passage of the bill on alternative and renewable sources of energy, including passage of important measures such as the Cheaper Medicine Bill.

Currently, as reported by the Department of Energy, there is an average increase of 60 percent on the price of oil in the world market. The domestic oil price increment is well below the global price due to the strengthening of the peso.

The price of crude oil is expected to hit $100 a barrel in the coming weeks until the end of December 2007. This might lead to an additional increase in gasoline price of P1.03 per liter up to P3.21 per liter this year, the DOE reported.

Earlier, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered all government agencies to mitigate the impact of spiraling prices of oil in the world market on the industrial and commercial sector in a move to clinch the Philippines’ goal of being globally competitive by 2010 and at the same time increase productivity. Northcrest exhibit goes to SM City
Sunstar Davao

AFTER a successful display at the Gaisano Mall in October, Northcrest is holding another exclusive exhibit at the SM City Davao, which started on November 20. The exhibit will be concluded on November 26.

The exhibit showcases the track record of Northcrest developer, Alsons Development & Investment Corporation (Alsons Dev), the leading real estate firm in Davao City. Since its inception more than 30 years ago, the company has been at the forefront of prime real estate projects, like the Las Terrazas, Woodridge Park and Ladislawa Garden Village.

Northcrest, located in Cabantian, Buhangin District, is a 40-hectare Asian Tropical-themed development with lot sizes at 150 and 250 square meters.
Its proximity to the Davao International Airport -- only 10 minutes away -- and other prime residential communities and commercial centers make Northcrest an ideal location to build your dream house.

Northcrest will be a well-balanced suburban community that offers a natural setting with quality amenities.

Its sports and recreation facilities are set to foster family togetherness, healthy lifestyle and fellowship among homeowners. Indeed, Northcrest adds another feather to Alsons Dev's cap.

Be at home with nature and make Northcrest your new home. Don't settle for anything less, go only for the best. Find out how easy it is to own a lot at this prime address.

Northcrest goes full swing with newly opened lots and improved promo packages. There will be an Openhouse on November 30 immediately after the blessing of the Northcrest's main entrance.

Young booters big delight for Davao
By Charles Raymond A. Maxey
Sunstar Davao

IT WAS a big achievement, but the triumphant campaign of the young booters from the Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) in the 2007 Alaska Cup in Alabang, Muntinlupa, almost came unnoticed by most people of Davao City.

After quietly emerging from the prestigious tournament held annually for the past 12 years with their heads held high, the Ateneo football stars deserve recognition for bringing honor to the City of Durian, their parents all mighty proud of the breakthrough of their youngsters.

Ateneo de Davao sizzled in the two-day event held at the Alabang Country Club inside the Ayala Alabang Village last November 10-11, capturing one crown, posting one runner-up finish and placing third in two age categories from a tough field of participants that included those from foreign countries.

The Ateneo girls were the jewels of the meet for Ateneo when they emerged champion in the 12-Under and finished second in the 14-Under.

The Ateneo boys also had their moment when they bagged third places in the 8-Under and 10-Under. The 12-Under team, meanwhile, finished fourth.

Davao also had a good showing in the Boys 14-Under when the FC United Dabaw snatched third place while the 16-Under team finished fourth.

It was an excellent showing by the Ateneo de Davao, a far cry from its campaign in 2006 when it garnered only one third place, in the 8-Under category.

"I'm really proud of the boys. They really played hard and they performed well," said Danilo Adolfo, coach of the 8-Under team.

Adolfo cited the support of the parents, who accompanied their children in the Alaska Cup and shouldered ther own expenses for the trip.

The Ateneo de Davao contingent in the tournament numbered around 400, including parents and coaches. Miguel P. Dailisan, the assistant head master for student affairs, was the head of delegation and cheered the children all throughout the competition.

The parents said the kids were all very tired after the competition, but noted they had a memorable experience in the Alaska Cup.

"We really prepared for this tournament," said Joy Diamante, who had three sons and a young daughter entered in the event. They are Gio, Gelo, Jed--who are all team captains--and Jellie, who is only four years old.

Bai Lim, whose three sons also competed for Ateneo, said the experience in watching the kids play and win in the Alaska Cup was enormous.

"We were overwhelmed by the size of the field," said Lim, who had son Jonathan playing in the 10-Under, Joshua in the 8-Under and Jasper, who is only four years old, in the 6-Under.

Parents Leni Leyson and Rowena Hara both said the trip was costly on their part, but confessed it was one fine experience the kids really savored.

Leyson's son Gabriel is the goalkeeper of the 8-Under squad. Hara's son Takeo also played in the 8-Under. Takeo's Japanese father even came all the way from Japan to watch the kid play.

Two other parents, couple Ritchie and Ruby Ramos, said the tournament was indeed tiring for the kids considering that they played non-stop in Alabang.

"But, they had fun and they played well," said Ramos, whose sons RJ and Robin played in the 8-Under and 12-Under teams, respectively.

Ronaldo Cabo was also one of the supportive parents in the Ateneo de Davao. His sons Zardo, Seth and Yuki competed in the 10-Under, 8-Under and 6-Under, respectively.

Other coaches include Noel Presto, Christian Ea and Alex Adolfo.

Ethiopian education minister visits tech-voc center
By Grace L. Plata
Sunstar Davao

THE Ethiopian State Minister of Education Wondwossen Kiflu was in Davao City last Monday to visit the Korea-Philippines Vocational Training Center (KPVTC) in Tibungco, Davao City.

According to Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) information officer Mafel Negrido-Gamale, the visit is in line with the Ethiopia's plan to sign a bilateral agreement with the Philippines in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), which allows the government of Ethiopia to invite experts from the Philippines.

Gamale, in a phone interview, said the Philippines serves as the model country of the Ethiopian government in their ongoing TVET reforms.

"Kiflu showed interest and solicited information about Tesda's organizational set-up, competency-based curriculum, profiling system of instructors, assessment and certification of TVET graduates, Tesda's organizational set-up, governance, and content and duration of training programs," Gamale said.

Kiflu's visit in the country is said to play a big role in the Ethiopian TVET System, which is currently being reformed to make it more in stride with the times.

The Ethiopian government chose the Philippines as a number of new elements are being introduced into Ethiopia's system, such as an Ethiopian Cooperative TVET System which is very similar to the Dual Training System in the Philippines.

Aside from his visit at KPVTC, Kiflu will also be visiting the Tesda Occupational Assessment and Teachers Training Department at Tesda Central Office in Metro Manila and the Polytechnics University in Quezon City.

Davao City’s tribal village project hailed
Manila Bulletin
November 22, 2007

DAVAO CITY — Leaders of different tribal communities in this city and region have hailed the establishment of an authentic indigenous tribal village reflecting the cultural practices of the more than 20 tribes inhabiting the hinterlands and highlands of the Davao Region.

The village is the site for a 10-day (Nov. 16-25) tribal gathering called the "Kalimudan Panaghiusa sa Mindanao."

A spokesman of the Mindanao Indigenous People (IP) Elders Advisory Council said the project of the Davao City government, through its City Tourism Office, is a "sincere reflection of the Davao City government’s appreciation of the IP tribal culture and the need to preserve the cultural values of the indigfenous people in Davao and throughout Mindanao."

Ms. Gere Angeles Duran, head of the city’s tourism operations office, announced the launching of the "Kalimudan" project during a recent media dialogue in the regular weekly Club 888 press forum at the Marco Polo-Davao during which she cited the rationale behind the activity that focuses on the relevance and significance of tribal cultural values and aspirations.

She said that the "Kalimudan" project is expected to transform a part of the city’s Magsaysay Park into something like a Nayong Pilipino showcasing a Cultural Village of 20 to 25 major indigenous tribes of Mindanao, showcasing their indigenous architecture, cultural performancves and exhibits, together with skills-creativity workshops, an agri-trade fair and craft sales.

Ms.Duran said that authentic tribal houses feature the highland dwellings, tree-house rice storage structures, kaingin farm-houses, midland shaman’s talugan house, datu’s house, ancestral houses on stilts, royal house, weaver’s house, boat dwelling, and other structures constructed in relation to various eco-systems.

"Kalimudan", she said, also features creativity workshops and IP daily demo on craft production and design enhgancement, traditional performing arts and visual arts workshops. (Gil Abarico)

Food the way it should be readBasti’s Brew — more than just coffee
Posted by Blogie on 21 Nov 2007 in Coffee Shop

I thought that it would be fitting to have Basti’s Brew as my first feature here, this coffee shop being my favorite and my usual haunt. In fact I’m right there while I blog this. As I’ve written before over at Ang Dabawenyo, Basti’s Brew Coffee Station at Victoria Plaza is probably the most successful coffee shop in Davao City. And for me, it’s conducive for blogging.

Spaghetti Meatballs Oveload

Tonight I had one of their newest items on the menu: Spaghetti Meatball Overload. Basti’s à la carte offerings are mostly Italian — pasta and panini — although most people wouldn’t associate the place with Italian cuisine. Well, the taste isn’t exactly authentic, but their food sells! (For authentic Italian fare, go for Picobello Ristorante Italiano.)

The meatball spaghetti (P130) wasn’t all that great, though. It was satisfying, and quite filling. Many Filipinos might like it because the sauce is sweetish, but I don’t like my spaghetti sweet. Perhaps if they mix the red sauce with a little bit more oregano, and made the meatballs spicy…

But it wasn’t bad at all. And the garlic bread was fresh and tangy, just the way I like it.

For lunch or dinner, what I do recommend are Basti’s set meals (P200) — my absolute fave is the pork chops. An order is served with soup du jour and ‘bottomless’ iced tea. My absolute craving, however, is their Chunky Chicken Sandwich (P95), which is a huge and healthy serving.

Basti’s Brew is located at the Victoria Plaza mall, and has a branch on Legaspi St., beside RJ Homes, near the UCCP Church. The one in Victoria is open from 7:30 AM to 12:00 MN on weekends, and up to 2:00 AM Fridays and Saturdays.

AYALA MUSEUM'S TRAVELING EXHIBITION AT DAVAO MUSEUM
Zonta Building, Insular Village 1
Lanang, Davao City
12 to 30 November 2007

Ayala Museum, in partnership with Davao Museum, presents Museum in a Box: Traveling Exhibition of the Pioneers in Philippine Art: Luna, Amorsolo, Zobel.

Davao Museum hosts this traveling exhibition from Ayala Museum featuring 38 finely reproduced paintings in a scale of 1:0.75. The exhibition chronicles one hundred years of Philippine painting from the late 19th to the late 20th century in the works of three artists—Juan Luna (1857-1899), Fernando Amorsolo (1892-1972) and Fernando Zobel (1924-1984).

With the aim to enrich the appreciation and understanding of Philippine art especially by young students living outside Manila, Pioneers of Philippine Art demonstrates the pioneering role of the three artists during their time. Juan Luna was the first Filipino artist to achieve international acclaim. Fernando Amorsolo is the most famous and perhaps the most beloved of Philippine artists. Fernando Zobel was one of the first artists in the Philippines to be known for abstract art and had influenced several generations of artists.

The original paintings were presented in one of the inaugural exhibitions in 2004, when Ayala Museum opened its new building to the public. Upon the request of Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, this exhibition once again presented at the Hambrecht Gallery of the San Francisco museum from October 2006 through January 2007.

Curated by Dr. Florina Capistrano-Baker, Director for International Exhibitions of Ayala Museum, Pioneers of Philippine Art will be on view at the Davao Museum from November 12-30, 2007. Museum hours are Monday to Saturday, 9AM-5PM. It is located at the Zonta Building, Insular Village 1, Lanag, Davao City.

A gallery talk on the Pioneers of Philippine Art will be conducted by Kenneth Esguerra, Ayala Museum’s Senior Curator and Head of Conservation, on Monday, November 12, 2007, at 2:00 PM. The exhibition is supported in part by Marco Polo Davao. For more information, please call Ayala Museum at telephone (02) 757711 or visit www.ayalamuseum.org; (http://www.ayalamuseum.org;) or Davao Museum at telephone (082) 2331734.

PHILIPPINE CARRIER CEBU PACIFIC TO EXPAND OPS IN DAVAO CITY

DAVAO CITY, Cebu Pacific (CEB), the country's leading domestic airline, is set to expand its operations in Davao by making it the third hub after Manila and Cebu by May 8, 2008.

The airline will base an A-319 aircraft and its necessary crew and support at the Davao International Airport (DIA) to service direct flights from Davao City to Singapore and Hong Kong. The airline will also offer direct domestic flight to Iloilo.

Such move is expected to boost Davao Region's economy, with the future influx of tourists and prospective investors from both neighbouring Asian countries.

"This is part of our commitment to develop Davao as a gateway into the Philippines and make the Philippines, particularly Davao or Mindanao, a more attractive destination for tourism and trade," Lance Gokongwei, CEB president and chief executive officer, said.
The decision to make Davao as the airline's third hub is in preparation for a more expansive inter-island connectivity, as they plan to acquire more aircraft within the next few years.

He said their direct service from Cebu to Singapore and Hong Kong have been "very successful and there's no reason we can't do it in Davao." "We recognize Davao as very attractive in terms of promoting trade and tourism. Davao offers the same potentials as Cebu," Gokongwei said.

Gokongwei said about 30 per cent of the 75 per cent traffic for direct international service to Hong Kong and Singapore comes from Davao.
New jobs for Dabawenyos will also be generated, he said, adding that support crew is needed for the maintenance of the aircraft.
"From our 40-man ground crew at present, we will increase it to about 60 as we need engineering support to the aircraft," he said.

Both services from Davao to Singapore and Iloilo will start on May 8 next year while service to Hong Kong on May 9. These new services will be introduced with a seat sale from November 13-20 this year.
"We will continue to expand our operations to achieve our goal of flying more travelers. And, with our continuous aircraft acquisition and base expansion, we hope to boost the country's tourism and trade agenda in the region," Gokongwei stated.

The airline also continues to pursue a 4th operational hub in Clark as soon as all the necessary government approvals to operate to Bangkok, Macau, Taipei, Hong Kong and Singapore are granted.

any clue what is this project all about?

"The local company also said that it bagged the contract to supply steel pipes for an undisclosed project in Davao City".

The local steel manufacturing company TKC said it is looking at another $7-million worth of steel pipe supply contracts for the Guangzhou Port Project in China and an export requirement to the Netherlands. The combined contracts would require at least 8,500 metric tons.

Through its China subsidiary, Zhang Zhou Stronghold Steelworks Co. Ltd. (ZZS), TKC Steel has already supplied over 3,100 metric tons of steel pipes to complete some infrastructure projects in China that include the Haicang Water and Xiamen Port projects.full story (http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2007/nov/17/yehey/business/20071117bus11.html)

Davao firm ships 20 mt frozen bananas to Saudi
Sunstar Davao

WITH the strong demand for banana in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), a Davao-based company has initially shipped 20 metric tons (mt) of frozen bananas last month.

Ferdinand Marañon, owner of Sagrex Foods, Inc., the sole company in Mindanao which is into the production of frozen ripe cardava banana, Pinoy fries (frozen banana fries), and turon (ripe banana glazed with sugar), was among the 14 businessmen who joined the KSA trade and investment mission spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry - National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center (DTI-Nerbac) Davao early this year. The mission paved the way for the market tie-up with KSA.

Trade and Industry Assistant Secretary Merly M. Cruz said that during their visit in KSA, Sagrex Foods' products gained positive feedbacks. The traders, distributors, and OFWs expressed intense desire for the products to be made available in the market.

"I can confidently say that Sagrex's partnership with KSA will go a long way because I've personally witnessed the interest of Arabs to really market the products locally," Cruz.

Engineer Pedro Ezekiel Sandoval, operations manager of Sagrex Foods, said the shipment is just the start of the company's strong partnership with its buyer in KSA. The said country has around 1.4 million overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

"Our buyer in Saudi, an Arab businessman married to a Filipina, is also interested to order Pinoy fries and turon but as of now, we can't meet their demand kasi nga hindi pa dumarating ang bago naming equipment," he said.
The equipment, which was mentioned by Sandoval, is a blast freeze machine worth at least US$30,000. It has a capacity of 500 kilograms per hour.

To date, the company's plant capacity is only at the level of 1.5 MT per day. With a new machine, Sandoval said, their production level will greatly improve.
They are expecting the equipment to be in by December or early part of 2008 and the company's expansion will commence upon its availability.

"Our expansion will really be ASAP (as soon as possible)," he said.

With the planned expansion, the company is expecting to accommodate more orders from various clients, both local and international.

Aside from KSA, Sagrex Foods is also looking at other markets such as the United States, Taiwan and Korea.

"Last year, we sent 10 metric tons of microwavable frozen bananas to Korea for market testing and sampling. With that, we immediately received an order of two 40-footer containers (one container loads 20 MT) per month but with our present capacity, we really could not meet their demand. Malaki talaga ang demand ng Korea. Kaya nga minamadali namin ang aming expansion," he said.

Moreover, Sandoval said, the expansion will also let them cater to the demand of the local market.

"Isang taga-Davao na businessman ang lumapit na sa amin para bumili ng aming produkto (A businessman approached us asking to buy our products) for them to export to Australia. A fast food chain is also interested to get our Pinoy fries. Kapag nandyan na ang aming bagong makina (When we get our machine), hopefully, tuloy-tuloy na ang tanggap namin ng (the) orders (will continue)," Sandoval said.

Banana, being the region's enrolled commodity under the One Town One Product (Otop) program, keeps on soaring high as manifested by this development, Cruz said.

Otop is a priority program of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo that aims to promote entrepreneurship and create jobs. Through Otop, local chief executives of each city and municipality take the lead in identifying, developing, and promoting a specific product or service with a competitive advantage.

Based on the report of the Bureau of Customs (BoC) and DTI-Nerbac Davao, the region already recorded a total export value of US$320.38 million for fresh and processed banana during the first semester of this year.

Food trips
By Rene Lizada
Papa's Table

WHEN the family is complete we go on a food binge. So when Miguel came home for a week we took it as an excuse to eat out. There is something whole about a family having dinner together, eating and laughing, sharing and teasing. And that we do when we dine out.

Aseya

Aseya is a small restaurant tucked at the corner of Humberto's, a cozy little hotel located at J. Palma Gil. We discovered the restaurant by accident and it has become one of our favorite restaurants.

Aseya serves Asian cuisine. The menu boasts of a variety of Asian food. However I just love their Japanese food. I like the mixed kamemishi rice. Seafood and beef and pork served with piping brown rice. Yum yum!

Chona likes the sukiyaki so much that that, that is the only thing she eats when we are there. Chona is not known to like Japanese food so it is a compliment to Aseya that she just loves the sukiyaki. Miguel had chicken, Raphael loves the beef and Gabo just stuffs himself with gyudon.

We love Aseya because it has great food. And, because the owners are such a great couple. They are genuine and warm and sincere. They themselves serve you and sometimes they even chat with you.

I was very hesitant to write about Aseya because I wanted it to be a secret but at the same breath I had to share this restaurant because it really deserves to be known. The food is wonderful and the prices are actually a steal because it is worth it all. Try Aseya. Our whole family recommends it.

Bigby's

Of course everyone knows where that is. Honestly it had been awhile since we ate there and so when we decided to celebrate Miguel and Raphael's birthdays we chose Bigby's.

It was a Monday evening when we went and the place was packed with people. The owner greeted us as we took our seats. The owner teased us since she happens to be a good friend of mine.

The menus were promptly given as we settled. After a few hours (since our family is notorious for indecision we finally agreed to what we were going to have.) We decided to share all our orders so that we could take a sampling of everything.

We had the Spice Safari pasta, the Asian Ostrich skewers, the Rack a Bye Baby (those are ribs!), Grilled Rodeo Chops and Tsunami Chops. (When you have three boys they always order meat!)

After ordering we left as we had to buy things. And we figured it might take some time for the food to arrive as the place was full. We left and bought the things -- that did not take long though.

And as we went back we were pleasantly welcomed by the food. It was ready. It did not take long. And the food was great. In fact everything was really good. I was a little wary of the ostrich but it turned out really delicious. The pasta I ordered was differently good. It had a tangy taste which I loved. And the bill was really reasonable. The service was also good. Bigby's is big!

Lachi's

Last Saturday my wife and I went on a date. Since it was payday or close to it she asked if I could treat her. Our biggest problem that night was where to eat. We thought of a lot of places but then in a flash of inspiration we decided to go to Lachi's.

That small cozy restaurant is located along Marfori subdivision. You will not miss it as long as you follow the main road. Lachi's has five tables so you better come early because the place is usually full.

We had eaten at Lachi's before and we always came out satisfied but tonight with my wife I said, "sige go all out, my treat." It is a good thing that my wife is not so much into eating as I am.

She ordered the Roast pork while I had Ribs and the Red Pesto Pasta. And as usual we were not disappointed. They have managed to maintain their quality of food and I know we will always keep coming back.

The Red Pesto pasta was a first for me and it was good. I would recommend it as a side dish because it complemented the ribs that I had. My wife who does not eat much even took a swipe at the pasta much to my dismay! I wanted it for myself lang!

After dinner we had a chocolate cupcake that was yummy. Right bitterness, right sweetness. Perfect actually. Then we had another slice of chocolate cake that was really creamy. The Roast Pork, the ribs, the pasta and the dessert and soda, how much did they cost? Would you believe less than three hundred?

I have always loved eating and it is a good thing that more and more restaurants are sprouting. Someone told me about this place that serves great pizza -- that is where I will go next. My wife though has suggested that we go back to the gym because of my weight. We might just do that but in the meantime there are so many restaurants to discover. Hurray for food!

3 Chinese firms eye local tuna production
By Carmelito Q. Francisco
Published : 2007-11-22
Mindanao Times

THREE Chinese companies have started exploring the possibility of partnering with local investors for investments in fish processing and exporting of sashimi grade tuna from the city, said George Campeon, regional director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

Campeon said he met with officials of the three companies, which are all from Guangzhi province of China on October 31 to start the discussion on the possible venture agreements with local investors, although the meeting was just exploratory.

He said local investors will still continue the discussion as there are plans for them to visit the prospective Chinese counterparts. “We still have sufficient supply of tuna either for export or for food processing,” he said, although he said he could not still provide the data on the city production.

Among the possible investments are in exporting high-grade tuna for sashimi to the Chinese market and the processing of lower grade tuna, he said, adding that the supply will be sourced from either those dumped at the Davao City Fish Port or those that vessels bring to other areas using the fish port as transshipment point.

Although most of the vessels that use the port are Taiwanese, Campeon does not see any problem considering that there were already initial discussion between them and the Chinese traders.

The Chinese government has considered Taiwan , also known as Chinese Taipei, as a renegade province even when the latter has considered itself independent.

“I believe there will be no problem considering that they will just be talking business. And business is business,” he said.

Based on the data from the port, about 200 Taiwanese vessels are using it either as transshipment point for their catch or to refuel and other related activities. The data also showed that annual shipment of tuna passing through the port could hit about 5,000 metric tons annually.

Sashimi grade tuna is shipped to other foreign destinations like Japan through the Davao International Airport , but still via Manila .

Asked whether the possibility of another processing plant in the city for tuna will have a drastic effect on the local wet market, Campeon said there is no effect whatsoever considering that the Department of Agriculture has specified only about 3.5 tons everyday should be unloaded to the local wet markets.

About two years ago, tuna traders from General Santos City criticized foreign vessels for dumping lower grade tuna into the city’s wet markets, preventing local traders from buying from them.

However, the Department of Agriculture issued an administrative order regulating the dumping of lower grade tuna, allowing only about 3.5 tons a day for the domestic market, out of the 13.5 metric tons of tuna unloaded at the fish port.

Mindanao Times

In its interest to extend civic assistance to the community, the Grand Regal Hotel recently donated thousands of slippers and china wares – plates, bowls, cups, saucers, etc.—to the Rotary Club of South Davao.

As agreed between the two parties, the Rotary Club will in turn take charge of donating the said items to public schools (for use in their Home Economics lectures) and to foundations, NGOs and other organizations that cater to the less fortunate.

The formal hand-over ceremony from Grand Regal to RC South Davao was done during the weekly meeting of the club at the Marco Polo Hotel last November 14, 2007.

The RC South Davao, in its desire to expand its services to the community, has been actively tying-up with different organizations for synergy.

Some of its other partners in civic work this Rotary year are the Mary Immaculate Health and Educational Foundation, the Davao CitiHardware, Enterprise Bank, Grand Regal Hotel, Hedcor (an Aboitiz company), Davao Medical Society, Davao Dental Society, Philippine Association of Medical Technologists, DIMDI, PIChE, and DCWD, among others.

Thor gets his big break
By Gabby Libarios
Friday, November 23, 2007

After years of doing backing vocals for more established artists and session work for upcoming recording stars, R ’n B-pop singer Thor has finally gotten his much-deserved break. He recently launched Soul Obsessions: Duets with Thor, a compilation of Thor’s favorite duets with some of the best in the music industry.

At a musical celebration held at Silver City Automall in Libis, amid the chatter and bustle of performers doing last-minute rehearsals, Thor couldn’t help beaming when asked about the huge development in his career. After all, he waited all his life for this opportunity to come his way.

“I feel really happy that I was given the chance to release this album,” he said. “This also gave me the chance to work with some of my idols.”

For a long time, Thor did backing vocals for Luke Mejares, Jay-R, Arnee Hidalgo and many others. Thor was in a band before he decided to try his luck in the world of recording.

“I also have this segment in Wave 89.1 called Duets with Thor. It’s where we feature my collaborations with different singers,” he said. “The program gave station manager Gary Caoili the idea to approach Ivory Music & Video and suggest that the songs should be packaged into an album.”

While all other aspiring recording artists would quickly say that playing second fiddle is a path that must be avoided at all costs, as one runs the risk of being somewhat pigeonholed, Thor didn’t mind playing the part of backup singer.

In fact, he took the experience as an opportunity to perfect his skills, so that when the time came for him to step into the spotlight, he would not fall short of the standards.

Admittedly, Thor said that there is also an advantage to doing backing vocals. For one, it doesn’t have the same pressure as singing solo. Because the audience doesn’t really notice backup singers, one doesn’t have to worry about looking good and holding the attention of the listeners, either. Nevertheless, Thor gives his best in each of his performances.

But now that he is venturing into the music scene, Thor just wants to focus on how to further improve his talent. An opportunity like this doesn’t come very often, so Thor wants to make the most out of the experience.

“I am really confident about this album, because I am now more mature, having been exposed to different styles and forms,” he shared.

Composed of 11 tracks, Soul Obsessions serves as a cherry on top of a delightful year for Thor. Among the noteworthy songs are the duets Be My Number Two with M.Y.M.P. and a cover of You Don’t Know Me, with bossa nova singer Sofia.

However, it is in Whenever You Call, a song originally popularized by Mariah Carey and Brian McKnight, Thor shines through. His smooth, mesmerizing and controlled voice complements Nina’s amazing belting prowess.

R ’n B, of course, is the main course of the album. Listeners can enjoy huge helpings of it in Spend My Life With You (feat. Amber), What About Love (with Jay Durias of South Border), Suddenly (with Jinky Vidal), The Girl is Mine (with Luke Mejares), and Everytime I Close My Eyes (with Natural High). Also featured are I’m Ready (with Cezar Aguas on guitar), Just One Dance (with Jerome Nuñez on violin) and Home.

Released under Ivory Music and Videos, Soul Obsessions: Duets with Thor is now available at record bars.

PGMA catches flight to Davao before typhoon’s onset
By glenrose on Nov 23, 2007 in News

by RG Alama

Davao City- It was around 20 minutes past the hour of 11 in a calm Wednesday (Nov. 21) evening, when President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo arrived at the Davao International Airport aboard a Philippine Airlines aircraft.

Amidst various speculations, the President according to Madeline “Bebot” Dizon Marfori, the President’s consultant on Mindanao Affairs was in a hurry to return home before super typhoon Mina arrives. Marfori said that the President does not want to come to Manila during the onset of the super typhoon.

According to PAG-ASA Super Typhoon Mina (international codename Mitag) is estimated to pack winds of more than 220 kph when it makes a landfall in Manila which is forecasted to be as early as Friday (Nov. 23).

The President arrived in a small party with Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro and Armed Forces Chief-of-Staff Hermogenes Esperon. She was met at the Airport’s tarmac by Duterte, Marfori, Presidential Peace Process Adviser Jess Dureza and a host of military and police officials led by Philippine Army’s 10th Infantry Division chief Major-General Ernesto Boac and Philippine National Police Regional Director Chief Superintendent Andres Caro.

The President immediately proceeded to Marco Polo Davao Hotel to spend the night.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte doused speculations and rumors that the President came because of his ongoing public rift with Davao City First district Congressman Prospero Nograles, who is a staunch President’s ally. Rumors were aplenty in the City that the President made a special trip to patch the squabble between Nograles and Duterte.

The Mayor said that DIA in Mindanao is the only airport with the equipment that can accommodate the President’s night flight, hence the decision to land in Davao. He said that President Arroyo will then proceed to Iligan and Surigao by the morning.

The Mayor said that they have been tipped as early as three days ago that the President is arriving to inspect the damages wrought by heavy rains in Surigao del Norte where seven towns have been put under state of calamity and in Iligan City where three people drowned and 2, 755 families have fled their homes because of very heavy rains.

The President according to Duterte asked a favor to the ASEAN that she would be the first one to sign the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) bilaterals so that she could leave early and her request was eventually granted. (PIA)

Davao firm ships 20 mt frozen bananas to Saudi

Post your comments here on the Batasan blast

Russian traders buying more Davao fresh fruits

MAXIM Cheploutsky, 25, lifted his dark sunglasses, took a good look at the Sasa International Seaport at dusk, sweeping his eyes at the container yard and modern loading facilities, broke into a smile and nodded, "This is good. Let's do it," he said, giving thumbs up.
This Russian import manager of Double D Trade who came all the way from the Far East Russian port of Vladivostok, was just winding his whole day survey tour of Davao banana plantations last year to check out the banana farms, the packing plants and local port facilities and finally decided to place their first import order of fresh bananas, fresh mangoes and fresh pineapples from Davao fruit exporters.

Today, the low-profile Russian trading firm, without any fanfare, has expanded its contacts with several Philippine fruit exporters, mostly in Davao, signing export supply contracts and opening letters of credit from their home office in Washington state, USA.

"We want to be the first in Vladivostok to offer a wide variety of high quality fresh fruits from the Philippines," Cheploutsky said, taking off his black baseball cap with the word "Russia" emblazoned on it.

The US-based Double D Trade company is currently shipping tons of fresh fruits, vegetables and frozen meat to its own marketing outlets in St. Petersburg, Moscow and Vladivostok.

Countries that are now exporting their food products in Vladivostok include Egypt (citrus), Chile (apples, grapes), USA (apples, grapes, pears), Australia (citrus), New Zealand (apples, pears) and Philippines (bananas, pineapples).
Products entering the port of Vladivostok are distributed through local Russian distributors, wholesalers, and retail stores in the towns and cities of Ussurisk, Nakhodka, Khabarosk, Yuzhno, Sakhalinsk and expanding farther towards Siberia.

Cheploutsky said Double D Trade now owns one of the biggest and most modern cold storage facility (including ripening rooms) in the Far East.

Increasing volumes of fresh fruits imported from several Asian countries including the Philippines are stored in this cold storage facility before distribution.

Not many ships however want to go all the way to Vladivostok and those that do, usually unload their containers at Busan port, Korea where they are reloaded again after a few days on other ships for transshipment to Vladivostok, according to Cheploutsky.

Lately, more ocean vessels are taking more reefer container cargo from the Davao port, which include American President Lines (APL), Maersk Lines and others. Last year, when ships were reluctant due to the low-volume shipments from the Philippines, Cheploutsky said it took 21 days from Davao to Vladivostok, but as competition grew between ocean vessels, shipments today are getting better and faster at 15 to 16 days delivery time.

To improve efficiency at the Vladivostok port, top Russian shipping executives from Far East Shipping Co. Ltd (Fesco) sought the help of the world-renown Philippine port operator International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI) to train their Russian managers in handling and managing container cargoes at their port. The Russian port managers were trained last year at the Manila International Container Terminal.

World-class port facilities in Davao, according to Trade Asst. Secretary Merly M. Cruz, can make it easier for ocean vessels to operate more efficiently and serve the shipping needs of more local exporters.

Most of Davao's fresh fruit exporters are shipped from the modern public and private ports along the coast of Davao Gulf, on their way to foreign markets worldwide. (Aurelio A. Pena/PhilPress Features)

Madrigal’s Davao gig to benefit 163, Davao choir
Mindanao Times

THIS Saturday evening, Davao will be fortunate to witness the performance of the undisputedly Best Choir in the World—the Philippine Madrigal Singers—in a choral concert to be held at the Ateneo de Davao University Auditorium, Jacinto campus.

The Philippine Madrigal Singers, also known as the Madz, will perform in the Sing Philippines Choral Festival, a choral concert for the benefit of Bantay Bata 163 Davao and the Davao Boys Choir.

Sing Philippines Choral Festival will also feature the Madz Et Al, the 10 Mindanao choirs the Madz have trained the past months under the outreach program of the foundation of Madz founder Andrea O. Veneracion, the AOV Sing Philippines Foundation.

The title of World’s Best Choir had been rightfully bestowed to Madz after it won the 19th European Grand Prix for Choral Singing in Arezzo, Italy in August this year. Madz won the plum prize after it beat competitors from all over world — the Taipei Chamber Singers, Cantemus Mixed Choir of Hungary, Schola Cantorum Coralina of Cuba, and the 2000 Grand Prix winner, the Children‘s Choir Vesna of Russia. The Madz is the only choir in the world to have won the grand prix twice, having won it the first time in 1997.

Choirs competing in the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing were the champions of European choral competitions held in Debrecen, Arezzo and Gorizia in Italy, which qualified them to join in this year’s grand prix. The Madz won in Florilege Vocal de Tours in France in September last year, thereby qualifying them for the 2007 grand prix.

After bringing yet another honor to the country, the Madz moved on to share their talents to their countrymen by giving training to promising choirs. They are currently conducting choral workshops with the 10 Mindanao choirs n Davao City, Tagum City, Koronadal, and Bukidnon. Madz Et Al is composed of the Davao Boys Choir, University of Immaculate Conception High School Chorale, F. Bangoy National High School Choir, Ateneo Carillon, University of Mindanao Choir, Matina Central Children’s Choir, St. Joseph the Worker Parish Choir, San Pedro College Chorale, Dihog Chorale, and the Symphony Chorale.

As a recital for these choirs, Madz launched a choral festival all over Mindanao where they shall perform with the Madz Et Al in a series of concerts from Nov. 22-27.

In Davao City, the concert tour is organized by the Southern Philippines Foundation for the Arts, Culture & Ecology (SPACE), headed by Margie Moran Floirendo.

The event is sponsored by the Anflo Group of Companies, Microtel Davao, Marco Polo, Dapacor, PTSI, Santerbro, DecoArts, Emilia’s Jewelry Collection, BPI/MS, Malayan Insurance, RJS Construction, Merco, Goldilocks, Link2Support, and Crystal Clear Water.

For concert tickets, call SPACE at 2352133 or 2352140 (Leda or Noreen).

Maayong Buntag Mindanao launched new segments for Christmas
Mindanao Times

WITH the onset of the Christmas season, ABS-CBN’s Maayong Buntag Mindanao recently launched two new segments dedicated to its viewers. During the launch of Munting Hiling, two lucky Kapamilyas’ wishes came true.

Darwin Espino, a high school student from Tres De Mayo, Digos City, wanted to give his nieces new dolls. An event organizer from Davao City, Budz Briones, answered his prayers by providing two new dolls and other toys.

Arlene Billiones, a mother from Toril, wanted to make her little Princess’ birthday extra special. But her family’s income is not sufficient for extra spending. To her surprise, Jollibee NCCC Mall Branch gave her daughter her grandest birthday bash.

These are just simple wishes that came true. Every week, one Kapamilya’s simple wish will be granted with the help of local sponsors and donors.

MBM is also accepting toys and donations for the less privileged children through “Share A Toy This Christmas” Project. Toy boxes will be placed in schools, shopping centers and other strategic locations. Watch out for the Toy Caravan in your area.

For donations and pledges, contact Michelle Robin-Bacsal at (082) 296-1911 or visit ABS-CBN Broadcasting Complex, Shrine Hills, Matina, Davao City, and share a little love this Christmas. (FEM)

A Sunday spotlight
By Michael Ebro Dakudao
Mindanao Times

Sunday afternoon saw us braving the grey clouds crowding the blue out of the few hours of week end left to savor. The invitation said that it was going to start promptly at 4:00 p.m., and that we had to be seated by 3:45. We arrived with just enough time to wait only a few minutes before we were ushered in to our seats. The stage was simply done. Our eyes located a large screen on the left off stage amidst a gaggle of greenery carefully arranged around the metal leg that propped the projection device. We were in for a digital delight.

We sat with friends and chatted on how time had quickly devoured the years between a past life of innocence; dancing away to this very point where we found ourselves asking each other, and comparing not only our ages, but most especially on what year we had come under the tutelage of Tita Nitang. Not many young girls in Davao at that time could escape the studio that boasted the only ballet school in our part of the woods. It was like a rite of passage. So much so that when my own daughter celebrated her fifth birthday, we thought it was time for her too, to enroll at the Locsin Dance Studio.

When Agnes Locsin came on stage to welcome all of us, old and new and latest friends to the occasion, the busy hum of excited chatter quieted down. We focused our attention on the stage and tried to calm our reminiscing mind. We stole a glance at Tita Nitang, looking frail in her wicker chair, flanked on both sides by generations of Davao friends and family who had, in one way or another, experienced her discipline for dance.

The program started with an excerpt from the poem written for Tita Nitang by Agnes’ friend, poet Ricardo de Ungria.

Of all the fruits and flowers

and fish and fowl

that take life from the land

and the waters and the air

from Mintal to Calinan

and beyond to Marilog

and even to Silay and Iloilo

none turns the day around

to this point of lightness and heat

than the sweetness without

husk or shoreline that is

human love.

Love the leap in the air

without shadows

over walls and trees and craters

torn open by bombs.

Love the stroke of midnight and fire

announcing orchids

ahead of bicycles and breasts. Love

keep the hands of dreams warm

in all directions. Love

the stillness that won’t stay still.

Or slip away

like a ship in the night. Love

be still.

The short reading, moving enough as it was, was only the beginning. Another excerpt from the full-length version for the show at CAP (November 17) was danced on stage. And here we find the silence after the last note of the music is played out, the dancers in their final pose, the audience seeming to wait for more to come. In that second before we are all transported back to the Sunday humid heat, we find ourselves immersed for a while in a love story that tested time and history. That its survival today, nay its continuing love is more than a testimony of the strength upon which it was founded from.

How does such a love and passion for dance become so much larger than its origins? Timely then, that Agnes and the family has seen to honoring their mother with the publication of this singular book on the genre as it progressed and blossomed in Davao City.

Carmen D. Locsin’s Legacy of Dance, more than the book launch it was supposed to have been, instead reminded us that we are, indeed, more than the sum of many parts. And we hope that this must be just the first of more to come. Davao needs it.

The book is available at the Locsin Dance Workshop.

Davao City orders all food establishments to use fortified rice, food products
By glenrose on Nov 23, 2007 in News

By Rose B. Palacio

Davao City — Following order of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, the City Health Office and National Nutrition Council has reminded all restaurants, canteens, cafeterias, hospitals, dietaries and food service establishments in the city to use rice fortified with iron, sugar, flour and oil.

Republic Act 8976 mandates the fortification of staple products due to the high prevalence of hidden hunger or micronutrient malnutrition in the country, particularly iron deficiency anemia (IDA) among women and children, said NNC regional head Ma. Teresa Ungson and City Health Officer Dr. Josephine Villafuerte during a Task Force on Food Fortification meeting held at the City Nutrition office along Camus Street, Davao City led by City Nutrition division chief Venus Millana and Kiwanis club represented by Sergio Y. Haw and Boy Rallos.

Mayor Duterte, through an Executive Order 19, created the Davao City Food Fortification Task Force aimed at strengthening mechanisms for the prevention of malnutrition, protect the health of the people and ensure that women and children are given proper nutrition.

In a bid to smoothly mobilize the Task Force, the Mayor initially provided some P500,000 budget for its immediate information drive and operation attested by City Administrator Atty. Wendel E. Avisado.

Jay Mathew Mariano, technical consultant, Grains Fortificant Marketing, Inc. and an active member of the NNC committee said as mandated by RA 8976, all three staple products like sugar, flour, and oil are already fortified.

Mr. Mariano and City Division chief Venus Millana were guests during a radio program “Tingog sa Masa” anchored by Boy Bilaan and the Philippine Information Agency.

Food manufacturers and producers are also enjoined to fortify food products especially those commonly purchased by the kids like chippy, torquillos, and other chichirias or finger/junk foods.

Mariano explained that during a TF on Food Fortification meeting, NFA assistant manager Mon Cangrejo explained that government (NFA) rice will be fully fortified by February next year (2008) following the bidding/procurement procedures which takes quite a time.

The Department of Interior and Local Government issued memorandum circular 170 to all provincial governors, city/municipal mayors, DILG regional/provincial/city directors and all others concerned for the implementation of RA 8976, “An Act Establishing the Philippine Food Fortification program and for other purposes.” (PIA)

Welcome!

With the Mount Apo National Park as its backdoor neighbor, no other village in Davao City can ever claim to be higher or cooler than Mountain Haven - and - it's a mere 25 kms. (15.5 miles) from SM Mall of Davao.

At about 1,000 meters (3,000 feet) above sea level, this fully completed village boasts an average temperature of 17 o C - 22 o C(62.6 oF - 71.6 oF - ) . High-value vegetables and even flowers from temperate countries like the USA and Canada have been successfully grown here. Capping all these is the unmatched view of the whole city. Davao Gulf and Samal Island.

With a very low density layout (8 lot per hectare or 3 lots per acre) plus a low buildable area per lot stipulation, you are assured that the nature ambience is retained even when everyone builds their own home. No wonder it's the subdivision of choice for leading businessmen, expats and even movie stars!

SMEs to adopt USAid's family welfare program
Sunstar Davao

SEVEN small and medium enterprises have pledged to participate in USAid's Private Sector Mobilization for Family Health (PRISM) project.

The project is a component of the Workplace Family Welfare & Responsible Parenting and Maternal Child Health program, which is being implemented through the Mindanao Business Council.

Representatives from GH Office Depot, Vitarich Corporation, Eden Nature Park, Davao Central Chemical Corporation, Maharlika Agro Marine Ventures Corp., and Ansuico Inc. signed the letter of commitment together with Prism chief of party Tennyson Levy and MinBC Chairman Vicente Lao at the ceremonial signing of commitment held at the Medco Office on November 20.

The companies pledge to engage in the capability building trainings, employee baseline surveys, project monitoring, eventual integration of family welfare and health component to company personnel, and the sharing of best practices on family welfare and responsible parenting, which will all be overseen by the MinBC in 2008.

Recognizing that manpower is the principal asset of every business, the project aims to help companies improve the health and well-being of employees and their families since these are directly linked to workforce productivity and harmonious working environments, which in turn translate into economic stability and higher assurance of profit.

"The wealth of a company is measured by the health of its people," Levy said in his keynote speech during the program. He added that businesses should also be concerned with giving their employees access to a better quality of life.

The installation of effective family welfare services in the workplace is hoped to help SMEs identify and institute policies that will place a premium on their employees' health.

Prism seeks to provide a wide range of technical assistance, training, and local granting through select Filipino partners, to catalyze the private sector as a vibrant and dynamic partner of the Philippine government in improving family health programs and services in the country. (Press release)

Beauty and the Beast
By Janette Huang Teves
Mom-about-town

I WAS recently invited to watch the amazing ballet production of "Beauty and the Beast" at the CAP Grand Auditorium. Being one of my favorites as a child, I was elated that this classic story was brilliantly interpreted through the art of dance.

The two-act show was a joint project of the Girlie S. Royeca School of Ballet and Ateneo de Davao Ballet in association with the Atlanta Festival Ballet, U.S.A. and in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

Adorable little ballerinas delighted the audience as they gracefully danced as flowers, lovebirds, woodland sprites, butterflies, courtiers and unicorns to serve as supporting cast to the principal dancers.

Young beauty

Guest artist Elizabeth Ferguson magnificently portrayed the role of the kind-hearted Beauty. It was the 15-year-old Elizabeth's first time to visit and perform in the Philippines.

Dancing at three years old, the talented ballerina joined the Atlanta Festival Ballet as an apprentice this season. She began classes at the school five years ago.

Elizabeth was given featured roles as she began excelling in her technique early on. Last year, the active teenager shared the role of Clara in Atlanta Festival Ballet's "The Nutcracker".

Elizabeth, who is of Peruvian ancestry, is a sophomore at Cathedral Academy and Clariece Paulk School of the Performing Arts in Atlanta, U.S.A. She comes from a family of seven children.

Her guest performance in Davao is just the beginning of the planned cultural exchange between the two prestigious ballet schools.

"We hope to be able to bring dancers from Davao to dance in Atlanta Festival Ballet productions and have Atlanta Festival Ballet dancers perform in Royeca School of Ballet productions on a regular basis. That's our goal, now we have to make it happen," says Atlanta Festival Ballet's co-artistic director Gregory Aaron.

A Baryshnivok moment

Nicolas Pacaña, who is co-artistic director of Atlanta Festival Ballet and Balletcenter Cebu, starred as the strong-willed Beast.

Nicolas is a distinguished and in-demand guest artist, teacher and choreographer in the international ballet community.

He made his professional debut with the Honolulu City Ballet after studying on scholarship with Patricia Slander in Los Angeles. He later joined the Boston Ballet as a soloist and quickly rose to the rank of Principal Dancer. He became recognized among the finest classical danseurs.

One of the most memorable moments of Nicolas' professional career happened when he was called upon to replace an injured Mikhail Baryshnikov in the Don Quixote Pas de Deux with only four hours notice during the legendary Baryshnikov's Atlanta tour in 1987.

"Beauty and the Beast" is originally choreographed by Nicolas and has been performed by the Atlanta Festival Ballet and toured throughout the southeast United States since 1997.

Stage debut

The successful production also marked the stage debut of the SOS Children's Village boys who are ballet scholars of the Girlie S. Royeca School of Ballet.

They are: Robert Marcuelo, 16; Ronald Mapande, 12; Felix Rama, 15; Rengie Pablegar,16; Jayson Tangpos,17; Reynald Villafuerte,14; Peter Orencio,14; Danilo Esparago,13; and Jose Salvana, 12.

SOS Children's Village is a private, non-denominational and non-government welfare institution that provides long term care and education to less fortunate children or children in extreme difficult circumstances.

According to Girlie, the SOS children have always been invited to watch past ballet productions such as "Little Mermaid", "Alice in Wonderland", "The Nutcracker", "The Jungle Book" and "Peter Pan".

However, it was only last August that she thought of making the SOS boys her ballet scholars. The boys are used to performing cultural, ethnic and modern dances during special programs at SOS.

With only four months of twice-a-week rehearsals, the boys did their best to learn basic ballet steps worthy enough for the "Beauty and Beast" show.

"At first, we felt awkward having leg and feet stretching exercise and wearing ballet tights," share the energetic boys.

"Learning ballet was hard yet we enjoyed ourselves so much. It was quite awesome rehearsing with other ballet dancers and with the very professional Mr. Aaron. We felt like real stage theatre actors," they add.

Through ballet, the SOS boys revealed that they eventually developed their self-esteem. "We overcame our shyness and gained confidence to face others," they enthuse.

Next week, join me as I visit the SOS Children's Village! (I would love to read your comments and suggestions! E-mail me at mom.about.town.dvo@gmail.com. Visit http://www.mom-about-town.blogspot.com)

"Cash-strapped" DAR moving to multi-million peso office
Walter I. Balane/MindaNews
Friday, 23 November 2007 14:11

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/22 November) -- Despite claims it is cash-strapped in as far as the distribution of more lands under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program is concerned, the Department of Agrarian Reform said it has funds for the planned relocation of its central office from Quezon City to Davao City.

The choice for the relocation, said Rodolfo Inson, DAR Southeastern Mindanao regional director, is either the Durian Hotel in Bajada or another commercial building in downtown Claveria Street. Both buildings have been foreclosed

Inson said the hotel, foreclosed by the Bank of Philippine Islands, would cost around P300 million and the Alcanatara-owned structure in Claveria Street, P147 million.

He said the decision on which building to buy will be known this week.

When asked if DAR has money to spare for the relocation, Inson said there must be as the national government has pushed for it.

Earlier, DAR Secretary Nasser Pangandaman announced they might initially rent an office for the relocation.

He said the relocation would most likely be pursued as it is President Arroyo’s commitment for the super regions in her 2006 State of the Nation Address. The transfer is expected to affect at least 1,400 employees at the central office in Quezon City.

Inson revealed the planned transfer in a press conference Wednesday. At the same time he declared the DAR is asking for an extension of CARP because it has no more funds for land acquisition and redistribution to farmer-beneficiaries.

The program ends in June next year.

Inson claimed the DAR has already achieved 94 percent of its land distribution program. But he said around 1.2 million hectares have remained undistributed. He added this is the reason why at least seven bills seeking the extension of CARP have been filed in Congress.

He said only 60 percent of the total 133,000 beneficiaries have received support services such as roads, bridges, school buildings and agricultural support.

He denied that extending the program would be an admission of failure.

"We have capacity to distribute but cannot afford to pay for distribution because of the limited budget," he said.

Salvador Feranil, chair of PhilNet Mindanao, a group supporting agrarian reform beneficiaries said the program has weaknesses but it has not failed.

He noted the need to reform the law and the DAR amid reports some of its personnel connive with landowners to prevent land distribution.

The group has organized a Grassroots Initiatives Forum and Stakeholders Dialogue scheduled later this month to tackle the issues affecting the poor and marginalized sectors.

"To achieve more lasting peace in Mindanao, it is necessary that social and economic reforms take place alongside all the peace initiatives from different groups," he said. (Walter I. Balane/MindaNews)

P15M food terminal opens in Davao City today

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/4665/img2120os0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The P15 million ALMACEN or alternative marketing center owned and managed by the Josefa Segovia Foundation opened its doors to the public yesterday.

JSF is a non-stock, non-profit organization and the social arm of the Teresian Association in the Philippines.

“ALMACEN aims to serve as an alternative marketplace and marketing center for farmers, cooperatives, local government units and people’s organizations in the city,” JSF executive director Chone Evelyn Baldoza said yesterday. Through the center, she added, farmers and other agricultural producers will have a venue to showcase and promote their products.

Baldoza said the center facilities (most of which are already in place) alone is worth P15 million. The 5.5 hectare land on which the structure stands is under a usufruct agreement with the Teresian Association. Under the terms of the usufruct, JSF can occupy the land for 25 years provided the land and the facilities are used for the benefit of farmers.

“We have been working with the upland farmers of the 3rd District for the last 16 years and we saw the need to assist them in marketing their products,” she said. The Foundation also provides transportation support to the upland farmers for easy delivery of their products from farm to market.

ALMACEN will also house the Market Intelligence and Information Center which will monitor the prices of agricultural products in the market. The Center will be operated by ALMACEN in coordination with the Davao City Investment Promotion Center, Davao City Cooperative Development Office and the Department of Agriculture.

It will also house a training center, ten market stalls (solely for farmers cooperatives and associations and people’s organizations) and a restaurant.

Baldoza said they envision the enter to be a one stop shop for all agricultural products produced by farmers so they will be holding night markets which will sell fresh fruits, fish, livestock, seedlings and even flowers. (lovely a. carillo)

Billionaire city to go on infra binge
DAVAO CITY EARMARKS
P3.7 BILLION FOR INFRAS

MYNEWS by ROGER M. BALANZA

The Davao City government has programmed P3.6 billion worth of infrastructure projects to be implemented from 2008 to 2010.

We can afford to embark on this ambitious building program with annual revenues zooming up, said councilor Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz, the chair of the Davao City Council committee on finance.

The City Treasurer’s Office in a mid-year report said total collections had stood in July at P2 billion opening up prospects annual tax could breach the P4 billion mark this year.

Ortiz presented the program on Tuesday at the council plenary contained in the Local Development Investment Plan (LDIP) for 2008-2010.

The LDIP, approved by the city council on second reading, earmarks P2.6 billion for infrastructure projects and P1 billion in non-infra projects.

The infrastructure fund would go to road building (P1.3 billion), buildings (P645 million), drainage projects (P252 million), electrification (P93 million), bridges (P130 million) and water system (P199 million).

Programs for economic development would get P189 million, social development P588 million and development administration at P262 million would share the P1 billion non-infra fund.

Mayor okays shelter code
By Grace L. Plata

THE Comprehensive Urban Shelter and Services Development Code of Davao City, otherwise known as the Shelter Code, was finally signed into law by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

Post your comments here on the Batasan blast

According to Dolly Pascua, executive director of the Mindanao Land Foundation, the Shelter Code has been signed into law last November 14, 37 days after it was re-passed by the City Council.

The Mindanao Land Foundation is one of the groups rallying behind the passage of the Shelter Code.

The Shelter Code was passed by the City Council on October 9 after four weeks of going through each section carefully. This after the Shelter Code was vetoed by the mayor for legal infirmities during the 14th council.

Provisions of the Shelter Code include establishing a trust fund earmarked for housing projects.

It also provides that the city housing authority will be the implementing arm for the program while the soon-to-be established Local Housing Board will be the policy-making body.

Urban poor groups, who also pushed for the Shelter Code, hailed the latest development.

"Lipay kaayo mi nga wala na siya na-veto. Gi-review gyud sa mga konshehal. Sa nine months nga among hulat-hulat, na approve ra gyud, (We are very happy it was no longer vetoed. The councilors, indeed, reviewed it. After nine months of waiting, it was finally approved)," Virgie Bayo, chair of the Kobbler Federation of Neighborhood Associations, said.

Pascua, on the other hand, said the groups have requested the mayor to hold a ceremonial signing of the Shelter Code on the opening of the Urban Solidarity Week on December 3.

Had dinner tonight at Swiss Deli, and I must say, it was a culinary treat! I know their steaks are a sought-after item there, but lately I’ve been sticking to a fish diet, so I went for their Fillet of Mahi-Mahi (P190). Mahi-Mahi is locally called pandawan, or otherwise known as dolphin-fish. Its meat is much, much better than lapu-lapu, in my opinion.

Swiss Deli’s boneless mahi-mahi fillet is pan-fried in olive oil and butter, which gives it that appetizing aroma. Capers, slivers of tomato and mushrooms add texture to the dish. I don’t particularly enjoy capers, but I was surprised it actually went well with the fish.

Before that main course, I had Swiss Deli’s Seafood Chowder (P125), which they serve in a bread bowl. They make the bread themselves, and the consistency is like that of French bread’s. Of course you can eat the bowl too!

My friend, Rochelle Venuti — she and her husband own Swiss Deli, Picobello Ristorante Italiano and Prego Café — had the Veal Bratwurst (P130) in gravy with lots of sweet white onion. I had a juicy bite of it, of course.

To cap the meal, we each had a glass of Salisbury 2004 (P429.50 per bottle), a Shiraz-Cabernet that’s a tinge spicy, but not very strong as other Australian reds tend to be. A perfect accompaniment to my meal.

A note on having red wine with fish. As French chef extraordinaire, Claude Le Neindre, put it to me once, it’s no longer taboo to have red wine with white meat. Today, it’s all about the taste, and preference. Claude said, so long as the wine does not drown out the subtle flavors of the meal, then it’s OK. I agree.

Speaking of wines, Swiss Deli also has a wine cellar, down in the basement level. They have a wide selection of French, Italian, Australian, English, South American and South African brands. Some of my favorites are the South African Libertas and the Santa Rita reds from Chile.

Swiss Deli is located in Lanang, Davao City, on J.P. Laurel Avenue, across the street from the Damosa building. For reservations and orders, call (82)234-0271. They are in fact a delicatessen: you can order sausages, cheese, olives, sun-dried tomatoes, wines, bread, and many other foodstuffs for take out.

Wildlife encounter at Crocodile Park
By Jojie Alcantara
Witerary

THE crocodiles of Davao are happily heading for Luzon via the Davao Crocodile Park Road Show and Wildlife Encounter!

Six months ago, this brainchild of businessman Sonny Dizon was created out of the blue. If Davao Crocodile Park caters to Mindanaoans where busloads of people from neighboring cities travel far and wide just to marvel at the interesting mix of exotic flora and fauna here, why not bring these species to Manila?

Pushing its aim in conserving and preserving wildlife, Davao Crocodile Park Incorporated plans to educate more people by bringing its finest animals to let Manileños experience and understand more about endangered animals, particularly the Philippine freshwater crocodile.

The Davao Crocodile Park Road Show and Wildlife Encounter is an educational show that will impart information on the conservation of endangered animals in our country and the world. Audience will have a truly "hands on" experience as they touch, feel, and take photos of amazing animals they may have only seen on TV.

They will be oriented about each species' role in the ecosystem.

Around 200 crocodiles of various sizes and species from 2 to 17 ft. will be brought to Luzon, showcased with 28 other exotic animals that will be animal ambassadors and messengers of wildlife conservation.

The show is aimed to educate the public how endangered animals deserved to be treated humanely and correctly. It will be launched on December 1, 2007 at Boom na Boom, Roxas Boluevard, Pasay City, and will run until February 28, after which the show will be on the road again to San Fernando, Pampanga from March to June.

The Davao Crocodile Park Inc. is a privately owned rescue unit of wildlife animals. Presently the DCPI has 43 Philippine Freshwater Crocodile (Crocodylus mendorensis) protecting and conserving this critically endangered crocodile.

In August 3, 2007, with painstaking effort and care, the Davao Crocodile Park moved 43 Philippine Freshwater Crocodiles to the Mandug Conservation area.

The Mandug Conservation area is a large, freshwater pond and a more natural environment for the critically endangered species. This move was done in hopes of increasing hatchability rate and the survival rate of the Philippine Freshwater Crocodile.
